Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's both this morning and we are joined by Jonathan
Cobis from Visit Canberra. Now, you spend a lot of
your life in Canberra, I do.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I spend a lot of my life in Canberra being
a resident, and i've the privilege, I guess I've been
able to tell the story of Canberra to people from
around Australia and overseas. So definitely want to encourage more
Tasmanians to come and see their national capital.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
It actually really is quite an interesting place. Now, can
you recommend as to whether or not people should be
looking at maybe going for a three day weekend, a
long weekend to start with, or what are the options
if you want to say, for longer.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, And one of the things those people have been
to Canberra, I'm sure they understand that the city offers
an incredible diversity of experience. So as a domestic short
break destination, which we encourage a lot of Australians to do,
two or three nights day is a perfect way to
experience the capital. And the good thing is is that
everything is in such close proximity, so visitors over that
(00:53):
time can engage with a world class cultural experience, visiting
many of Australia's great museums in gallery, everything in the
National Gallery of Australia, the Portrait Gallery, Museum of Australian Democracy,
all of these places that tell the Australian story, and
then minutes from there you can be completely immersed in
nature and feel as though you are taking a real break.
(01:13):
Canber also has a really great good wine seeing, great
retail shopping. So usually a CBD hotel stay gives you
access to an incredible range of experiences and that's what
we encourage people to do. But for those who want
to extend, they stay and do more. We're on the
doorstep of a wine region that has over thirty cellar doors,
and there are many other things that you can do
(01:36):
in the nearby region. And coming up to winter, it's
a great base to connect to the snow as well,
so you know, anything from a two three nights day
right up to a week. We're very happy to welcome
everyone and their needs.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
How cold does that make it in Canberra during the
course of winter, Well.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Given approximate into the snow, it can be cold, but
we like to embrace the cold. Canberra is a city
of four seasons and winter is really a great time
to visit the city. Cold crisp mornings usually mean bright,
clear skies and by the middle of the day it's
actually a lovely time to be out and about. And
one of the great things you can do in Canberra
is actually take in the Lake precinct. We encoaged people
(02:15):
to hire bikes and explore the capital and because of
the cold, crisp, clear skies, canbra is probably Australia's capital
of hot air ballooning. So a fantastic way to experience
what the city is and it's geographic layout is to
take a hot air balloon early in the morning, hot
cup of coffee and see the city from the air,
(02:36):
which is a truly spectacular.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Experience that sounds like it would be amazing. The other
good thing to remember, I guess if you're going to
get on a bike, camera's quite flat, isn't it, Because
in Hobart it's very lumpy.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Yes, I've visited Hobo many of times and yes it's
different to Canberra in that sense. You can really navigate
the city quite easily from a range of locations on fike.
It's got a great cycle infrastructure. But for those who
are a little bit more intrepid. The city does have
a number of hills around it and there are opportunities
to either ride up those or as I was saying before,
with Canberra's proximity to nature and that easily connected nature experience,
(03:09):
there's something really great hikes where you can killers that
you can really get away and experience native Australian bush
and wildlife and take some hikes up the top of
those hills and again get a very different perspective of
what the city has to offer.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Now, five or six years ago, you guys made the
headlines because there were kangaroos invading the football pitches and
stuff during the drought. Does that still happen?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Canbra is a city that has a lot of kangaroos
in and around and it's one of the great attractions
for the international markets and Australians love it as well.
There's nothing better than being out in the city and
engaging with Australian wildlife. Any Tasmanian golfers who want to
come up and they golf one of the best place
especially see kangaroos on the Federal Golf Club or Royal
Canberra Golf Course or the others. Whether the kangaroos and
(03:52):
the sports blend really well together.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Fantastic. We might pause it there for a second, but
we'll come back and have a bit more of a
chat about Cambra, which is a fantastic des destination. We're
chatting with Jonathan Cobs from Visit Canberra and Matt Cock
of the COO from Hobart Airport. It's your destination.
