Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome, friends, to
your motivational Gen Z and
Millennial Expert podcast.
I am your host, dr JasonWiggins.
The podcast is for Gen Z andMillenials, on how we can
improve and we can help you inyour daily lives, professionally
(00:21):
and personally, by motivatingyou to reach your goals.
This is a weekly podcast withnew episodes each and every
Monday, barring a holiday.
First and foremost, I hope youhad a terrific weekend.
Let's get our heads right andget the show on the road.
(00:42):
Well, first and foremost, thankyou very much.
It was an exciting weekend, tosay the least.
If you're in the United States,I'm sure you were able to catch
the exciting end to the SuperBowl.
We had a Super Bowl between theKansas City Chiefs and the San
Francisco 49ers and it was agreat game that ended up going
(01:06):
in the overtime and, as you know, every game, barring a tie, has
a winner and a loser.
Well, this discussion today isabout how to win and lose, but
feel like you actuallyaccomplished something.
(01:28):
Now, that's easier said thandone.
When you think about it, you gowell, of course, if I win, I
accomplished something.
Think about this in the case ofboth teams before the biggest
game in United States sports onan annual basis.
You could see players withtears rolling down their eyes
(01:52):
and the coaches were tremblingas they're holding their
clipboard and the fans weregoing crazy.
The audience across the UnitedStates and all the TVs and
abroad were going crazy.
It was a high stress, highreward type of atmosphere and,
of course, it was in Las Vegas, where it's the kind of the mecca
(02:16):
of the United States when itcomes to entertainment for those
that are adults.
So it was an epic, epic weekend.
Obviously, we don't talk aboutsports too much.
We talk about things that helpyou professionally and
personally, which is why we aregoing to talk about today, about
(02:37):
how to win and lose whileactually coming on top.
So let's talk about, let's justsay it's sometimes you lose, you
lose on something that'sextremely important to you.
You had every ounce of energygoing towards that winning goal,
(02:58):
that winning shot, that winningcareer move, that winning
personal life goal, whatever itmay be.
You may have put everythinginto what you wanted, but you
came out short.
I've been there, I've done it.
I've been in a semichampionship game where who won
that game would go to thechampionship game and we ended
(03:23):
up losing in a couple over times.
It wasn't the lack of effort.
It was sometimes not execution, sometimes it was just the
better team won.
And remember, any team on anygiven day can be better than
someone else.
Somebody could be feeling underthe weather.
(03:46):
You could, have team membersout, you could.
There could be a plethora ofreasons why things don't always
work out.
In this case, you kind of knewit was in trouble in that game
when all of a sudden somebody isrunning out onto the field and
they fall and they tear theirAchilles tendon.
(04:09):
It's not an immebiable position, it's not a great thing.
But at the end it's aboutexecution, it's about the desire
to win and it's about thedesire to find a way to come up
on top even when you're not atyour best.
Now let's turn our eyes to thelosing team, San Francisco 49ers
(04:32):
.
They played their hearts out, they did what they could.
So imagine this you're in acareer, you're doing everything
you can.
Your goal is to get promoted.
Your goal is to to reach thenext step.
You have competition withanother team member.
You think you're better thanthey are.
But sometimes it's officepolitics, it's sometimes out of
(04:55):
your control and there you sitthere and go.
Why not me?
Well, sometimes it's all abouttiming.
Maybe it wasn't the right time.
It doesn't mean you weren'tgood enough.
It just means somebody else waspicked for a variety of
different reasons.
And that's the same thing whySan Francisco might have lost to
(05:17):
the Chiefs it was just becausethat on a given day, somebody
was able to do just a little bitmore than you to win the game.
And that's about how life is.
Life is like a game, a game youplay every single day and you
know what the goal of that dayof life is, every single day.
(05:40):
It's to get through it and totry to do the best you can and
make sure that you gave it yourall.
Because one day, when we leavethis earth, how are we judged by
our peers, by our self, as wego out?
First and foremost, you want tomake sure you were a great
(06:02):
family person, a great friend, you did the right things for
people, you treated people well, you did the right things in
life and you want to know you'rea good person.
So if you do that every singleday in life, that means you will
come out as a winner.
Gen Zs and Millennials times aretough.
(06:23):
Inflation jobs they're alltight, I mean, even though.
Wages are going up across theworld, so are the cost of goods,
so are all the entranious costs, extraneous costs that are
involved are going up, up and up.
People are working two or threejobs to support their family,
(06:47):
but are they winning in life?
The answer is simple.
Winning is about how you turnyourself inside out and you look
at yourself.
Are you doing the very best youcan?
Are you doing the things thatmake you a better person?
Are you being optimistic whenlife throws you lemons?
(07:10):
You've heard this saying maybeyou haven't you make lemonade.
Again.
When life throws you lemons, you make lemonade.
And that, right, there is theessence of life.
It's about when you haveopportunities to be a better
team member, to have a chancefor that promotion, to have a
(07:33):
chance to be able to rise to theoccasion.
What do you do?
How do you eat an elephant?
You eat an elephant, one biteat a time.
When you're able to eat a biteat one bite at a time, you're
able to keep making it happen, keep going for the goal and keep
(07:58):
finding a way to succeed.
Life can be difficult.
The environment can bedifficult.
Sometimes.
We're not always put in awin-win situation.
But how do you win.
You win by checking yourself atthe front door.
What does that mean?
(08:19):
It means leave the ego out.
Sometimes in life, we don'tunderstand why things happen.
They happen because that wastheir place in time for us.
I can think of so manydifferent occasions where it
seemed like life was throwing mecurveballs and I'm going why?
(08:42):
Why is this happening?
How, come, with all the effortand work that I put in, things
are not working right?
Why am I not getting thispromotion?
Why am I not getting this job?
Why am I not doing this?
Why is that?
Why isn't business taking off?
Whatever it may be in your life, you'll have to look and go.
(09:04):
Why not?
Well, guess what?
If you keep pushing forward, you keep taking one step forward
instead of two steps back lifewill become much easier.
Nobody's going to give you whatyou want in life.
You have to shoot for the stars.
You have to go forward, andthat's when you look at the game
(09:25):
last night.
The game was about two teamsdoing their best to where only
one team wins and takes home thechampionship trophy.
Therefore, there's going to beone winner and there's going to
be one loser, but the true loseris the one that did not put the
effort to get where they neededto be.
(09:47):
The true winner is regardlessof the situation and how it
unfolds.
You gave everything you had,you did what you could to try to
win, and that leaves us.
As we move forward, we're goingto talk about the what would you
do moment, and we're going toalso have a quote.
(10:09):
The quote will be very vague inthe manner that I will portray
it, but it's still important tolook at these life obstacles
that are thrown at us todetermine how can we get around.
Times are tough, parents arebroke, families are broke, jobs
(10:33):
are spares.
I mean, this is just not withinthe United States, this is
across the world, and so youhave to find ways to circulate
your opportunities and therefore, winning is in your mind the
ability to generate excitement, motivation that continue,
(10:55):
ability to press on even whentimes get difficult, and I
always want to state that whenyou're in a chance to win or
lose, whatever may be in, it'sabout giving your all, giving
your best, but realizing if youcame short, remember to look the
(11:17):
other team in the eye and saygood job, you did what you could
.
The better team won today, andthat's not an indictment on you
or your team.
It's about understanding thelevel playing field in life and
realizing I may have not gotwhat I wanted this time, but if
(11:37):
I keep pushing towards my goals, doing the right things, making
the opportunities, then thingswill become more easier, they
will become more transparent andI will see what the rainbow
holds.
At the end.
What is that part of gold thatis waiting for me?
Well, that part of gold, Ifound for me very simple.
(12:00):
It's not career, it's notcircumstances.
It's family and health and theability to look at myself and
say am I the best husband I canbe?
Am I the best father I can be?
Am I the best friend I can be?
Am I the best son I can be?
(12:22):
All of these questions, as Iget older, are ones that remain
so important.
It's not about the money, it'snot about the opportunities that
lie ahead, so much anymore.
It's about doing the rightthing.
Doing the right thing, and whatdoes that mean?
(12:42):
Winning and losing ultimatelyevolves around doing the right
thing, fulfilling your lifegoals, fulfilling your passions,
understanding that the onlything that prevents us from
doing what we want and pursuingour goals, trying to win, is
(13:06):
simple it is the desire.
What is your desire to take itto the next level,
professionally, personally andfinding that niche, that niche
that is so important to you tosucceed in life.
That's what I'm talking about.
(13:27):
That's the difference betweenwinning and losing.
I would never call anybody aloser, but what is a loser?
A loser is someone that doesn'ttry, that gives up before the
race has even started.
It's too hard, I can't do it.
(13:47):
All of the self-doubts just runthrough your head, dialing in
and going you can't do this, you're not smart enough, you're
not good enough, you're notathletic enough, you're not this
, you're not that, you don'thave this, you don't have that,
(14:07):
you can't date this girl, youcan't marry this boy.
Whatever it may be, all theself-doubts that we have in our
lifetime will prevent us,prevent you, from creating a
path of tremendous opportunities.
(14:28):
Opportunities come knocking, then you better come answering.
And again, how do you eat anelephant?
One bite at a time.
That's exactly what you do whenyou have an opportunity, you
take one bite at a time and yougo for it.
(14:49):
Go for it, make an impact, makea stand and let all those
people with those self doubtsabout you Let them fall from the
wayside.
Let them leave yoursurroundings, leave your inner
bubble.
People that want the best foryou are going to strive for you
(15:12):
to be successful.
What is success?
It's not money, it's not fame.
It's fulfilling your passion, fulfilling your goals and
ultimately, at the end, when youlook in the mirror for that
very last time, you stand up andyou say to yourself did I make
(15:34):
it?
Did I do what I was put on thisearth to do?
Did I treat people right?
Did I leave a family legacy?
Did I leave everybody knowingthat I did my very best?
That's what's really importantthe game of life.
There are no winners, there areno losers.
(15:56):
It's the chance to fulfill youropportunities in life.
Sometimes you will, sometimesyou won't, and those
opportunities we don't even knowexisted because why we took one
path versus another, and theone path that we took might take
us away from winning the bigevent or losing the big event,
(16:22):
or moving from this country.
Think about this all theopportunities, all the roads
you've crossed over time whereyou could have went one way or
the other.
I can tell you right now I maynot be with my wife today if I
had moved from San Diego andtook a job somewhere else in the
country.
I had the opportunity, butSometimes it's fate that keeps
(16:48):
you where you are and that lifegoals and plans.
You don't understand at thetime, but you stay and there's a
purpose.
You stay because that's thetrajectory of life.
If you leave one location to gosomewhere else before you've
actually maybe had a family, that life trajectory could
(17:12):
literally take you from marryingone person to marrying another
person, having a whole differentlife.
I mean, that's what life does.
It's about crossroads.
Do I take this job?
Do I go in this direction?
Do I take years off of work?
Do I start a business?
Do I relocate?
(17:33):
All of these different kinds ofscenarios will make a huge
impact in where you go from here, regardless if you're 20, 30,
40 years old, 50 years old, whatever it may be, as a Gen Z
and millennial, gen X, babyboomer, whatever it may be, life
will keep throwing you curveballs.
It'll keep saying, hey, if youdo this, this will happen.
(17:56):
It's like a math equation X Y.
What happens?
It's the Y intercept.
This is what's gonna happenwith the math equation, whatever
it may be.
The great thing is life isamazing.
Winning is amazing.
Losing is not so amazing.
But when you have theopportunity, regardless if you
(18:18):
win or lose, you have to takethat opportunity, because you
never get that opportunity backin many occasions.
So, again, if you put your verybest effort in like, I'm sure,
the 49ers versus the Chiefs theyput their very best effort in,
but sometimes, plain and simple,it wasn't in the cards, it
wasn't meant to be, and that ispart of life.
(18:41):
It's not meant to be so.
When you talk about the whatwould you do moment, how would
you react if you saw somebodyjust lose one of the most
important things, eithercareer-wise or personally-wise,
and they're upset?
What would you do in thatmoment?
(19:01):
Would you tell them a job welldone?
Would you just console them andhave tears with them?
Would you say that things aregonna get better?
Or would you say this was justa missed opportunity, but
there's gonna be more?
I mean, that's part of life, everything that's thrown at us.
(19:21):
We have the opportunity to bebetter, to try harder, to make
sacrifices.
What's gonna happen?
These two football teams thatplayed in Super Bowl?
They're gonna go back to springtraining next year.
They're gonna work hard.
They're gonna do everythingthey can, because every single
team goal is to go to the SuperBowl.
(19:43):
If you're playing football andtherefore the opportunity is
there.
So, again, I just want toconfirm what I've said today,
and that is there are no winnersand losers.
There's only those that didn'ttry.
So that means if you try, yougave your heart, you're a winner
(20:05):
.
It may not have showed up inthe box score, but each and
every one of us, we have to keepmoving forward.
Don't let life knock you down, don't let economics knock you
down, don't let foul words ormean things that people say
knock you down.
Don't let your own self doubtknock you down.
And that leads me to our sayingtoday the quote.
(20:29):
The quote is when you stoptrying, you stop winning, and
that was an anonymous.
When you stop trying, you stopwinning.
And that was an anonymous quote.
I could not find the author, but that is everything that's
true about life, everythingthat's true about being a sports
(20:49):
athlete or any career you're in.
So I hope everybody enjoyedtoday's episode, I hope
everybody enjoyed the game and Iam excited to continue to move
forward and help motivate youany way you can.
So feel free to share thepodcast with your family and
friends.
Again, my name is Dr JasonWiggins.

Bye, bye.
