Jordan (00:03):
What is going on
everybody?
Welcome to the PureGolf Podcast.
My name is Jordan and today weare going to be doing a pretty
simple recap of the TravelersChampionship that just ended
yesterday evening Props toKeegan Bradley and we are going
to dig into that.
In just a second, before we getstarted, i'm not going to cue
(00:25):
the advertisement music or theannouncement music, nothing of
that.
This is going to be a veryshort, simple podcast, but check
out the PureGolf YouTubechannel.
We just released a four-manscramble.
It's, i think, veryentertaining.
If I'm being honest, granted, iwas involved in this one.
(00:46):
You people finally get to seeme on the golf course Incredibly
rusty, but there are some veryfunny moments that I was a part
of it and I was a part of thesecond batch of recording too,
where we were in the studio justrecapping the round and I still
find myself laughing at some ofthe events we had.
It's just, it's veryentertaining.
(01:06):
Other than that, the social.
I don't know why I'm strugglingover our handles, our Instagram
, facebook, twitter, tiktok allthose handles are at my pure
golf and all those are going tohave daily content from us.
Just some short videos that wereleased throughout the week and
(01:27):
we would encourage you tofollow those, get involved with
us, comment like, subscribe allthose fun little things that
keep us going as a company andkeep us interacting with you,
because at the end of the day,we just want to help everyone
consistently break 80.
I think that's kind of whatwe're falling into in a category
was.
So I will now just get into mytournament recap Again.
(01:52):
Let me explain what happened.
So a lot of times on thesetournament recaps I'm joined by
some of the other people on ourpodcast, and we actually did
record one earlier today.
It was me and Ariane.
We had a decent talk, but itwasn't our best podcast and we
actually looked at each other atthe end of it and we're like
(02:12):
didn't go very well.
We both agreed, we were likethis just wasn't good, and so I
was kind of faced with adecision and we could either put
that out there We could notrecord anything or post anything
tomorrow or today as a podcastor I could think about this for
(02:39):
the next three hours.
Then, at close to midnight, determine you know what.
I still made myself a promiseand made this company a promise
that I would put something up.
So I'm going to put somethingout.
It may not be the best podcastwe do, but I'm going to make it
better than what we had.
This is no fault of Ariane.
(03:00):
It was just a conversation thatdidn't flow because it was a
very hard tournament to find alot of drama or teaching moments
And it just, relativelyspeaking, it was my least
favorite designated event of theyear And it was tough to find a
(03:21):
lot of talking points on thisone, for whatever reason.
So Pure Golf and I understand Ido a lot of the leadership
around Pure Golf has thiscommitment that we want to be
proud of the content we put out.
We want to be really happy toput our logo on that, and had I
(03:41):
chopped up and edited the crapout of these stuff with Ariane,
i don't think I would have beencontent, and so I'm going to
come on here.
I can control this environmenta little bit more because I have
a little bit of a script infront of me now And I can just
give some talking points to helpany golfer who's looking to
(04:02):
consistently break 80, whilealso recapping this designated
event Again, the Travelers'Championship.
Let's start out with the winner.
It was Keegan Bradley'stournament.
Nothing but love and respectfor Keegan Bradley.
He actually We have a mutualfriend and one time he kind of
(04:26):
gave me this shout out and I'vealways appreciated that about
Keegan Bradley.
I've never met him, but he gavesomebody a message to give to
me through somebody else that weboth know.
I've always been appreciativeof that.
I love Keegan.
I find myself pulling forKeegan And then to see his
family there on the 18th hole ashe's walking off celebrating
the win with his kids, he can'thelp but really just be happy
(04:50):
for the guy.
He went five years without awin and then back in.
I think it was October he wonthe Zozo, but that was overseas.
So this is the first time he'swon back in the United States in
five years.
And I thought that was just agreat talking point of.
Every golfer goes throughdroughts.
(05:12):
Sometimes golf is really easyAnd those moments in life are
something that I think everygolfer should cherish.
One golf is easy appreciate it,love it, play the crap out of
it.
Enjoy it because you never knowwhen it's just going to turn a
little bit difficult on youagain And it's just this
constant undulation of, or thisup and down again, undulation of
(05:37):
well, today it's easy, in amonth from now it may be hard,
or today the irons are goingwell but the short game is
struggling, or the drivers goingwell but the putter is
struggling, but it is a gamethat humbles you completely And
I think Keegan Bradley has alsohad some kids along the way, as
(05:59):
I already mentioned.
But there's been some ups anddowns, there's been some changes
in equipment along the way andI know there's been frustration
along his road to get back inthe winter circle And I think
you enjoy this win because Ithink it's very over easy.
Wow, i think it's very easy tooverlook celebrating wins,
(06:23):
especially for players of youdon't know how long it's going
to be back in the winter circle.
This year Arjan made the pointthat I'm going to bring back up
that we raised the recording up.
We had six players win twotimes or more on tour this year
and that's incredible, and youdon't know how long that drought
(06:44):
is going to be for any of thoseplayers moving forward.
It could be injury, it could bepersonal life, it could be
personal problems, but somethingthat is to be appreciated is
enjoy when golf is going reallywell.
It is the most frustratingsport I think ever because you
don't have any teammates, it'sjust you, 14 clubs and any
(07:07):
course that you are findingyourself on that day, maybe
where golf now has the lowestrate tee time that day.
But it's something to beenjoyed.
But it's also something to knowthat whenever you're going
through a drought in your golfgame or whenever golf is really
hard, you got to know if youjust hang in there, just keep
(07:30):
grinding out, good things willcome from all that hard work,
and so that's something I reallyloved about Keegan Bradley on
this tournament, and justnothing but the best for that
guy.
I hope he continues to findmore and more wins.
He's in his late 30s now.
I've heard nothing but greatthings about the guy, and so I
(07:50):
want to give him his properrespect, as I know he's an avid
listener of this podcast, whichis a complete joke.
I hope you pick up on that.
There's a couple more playersI'm going to touch on, but this
broadcast was tough.
To no credit, like to no,what's the word I'm looking for?
(08:14):
To no fault of their own.
This final round of golf wasjust not very entertaining.
Keegan had a commanding leadAnd for a moment there in the
back nine, i think he bogeyedtwo or three in a row.
Patrick Kandler was making alittle bit of a run, but it was
still a three shot lead forthree more holes to go And it
(08:38):
just looked like Keegan, despitethe bogeys, was still going to
pull it out And it really wasn'tdramatic at all.
And so in these designatedevents it is a player field that
is completely, completelystacked.
These golfers on this golfcourse were going low, low, low.
I just found myself having ahard time to follow the hype of
(09:04):
the drama that they were tryingto build And God bless them.
It was tough on this broadcast.
It was a blowout win.
Despite that, the golfers weregoing low.
There were people that shot 60,.
There were people that shot 62,63, 65.
Like it was nothing Keeganwinning at, i think negative 24,
negative 25, i don't know Atthis point I can't remember.
(09:26):
In the mid-20s under par is ashootout, but there was nobody
shooting out with him on thiswhole day.
Patrick Kandler gave it a greatrun but ultimately failed
because Keegan had such acommanding lead.
It was so commanding that hecould afford to give up two or
three bogeys down the stretchand still really wasn't too
(09:50):
worried.
He could breathe easy on the17th and 18th hole from what the
broadcast was saying.
So it just wasn't entertainingto watch.
It wasn't bad golf, it justwasn't very entertaining because
it was a one-horse race, asI'll put it.
So I think it was the PGATours' worst nightmare in terms
(10:15):
of these designated events.
You came to the final day.
One person was in the lead andit wasn't the most recognizable
face on the PGA Tour of a Roryor a Scotty or a Ricky Fowler.
It was Keegan Bradley who, unless you pay very, very, very
close attention to golf, or justa little bit closer attention
(10:38):
to golf, you probably didn'tknow.
You didn't know who he was.
And then the people behind himthat were chasing him weren't
the most recognizable nameseither.
Patrick Cantling is kind of one, but he's also not one of the
most marketed golfers of alltime And I think it just was
kind of a nightmare for the PGATour for one of their huge
purses to go.
Nothing wrong with KeeganBradley winning, but the fact
(11:00):
that there were no names in veryclear contention chasing him.
It's a tough one.
So I know Scotty Schaeffler, tied for fourth.
Rory, was at negative 18.
He was a little bit incontention but there was nobody
who was going to actually chasehim down and give him a real
(11:21):
scare.
So I think it was my idea.
For this one that Arianna and Italked about was, i just think,
no-transcript Having adesignated event follow a major,
and also the designated eventwas literally across the country
(11:43):
from where the major was.
It wasn't my favorite thingbecause you almost needed a
little bit of downtime after theUS Open to have a more minor
event and then have these guysgo to the designated event.
I think the US Open followed byanother designated event is
(12:03):
asking a bit too much of yourplayers, especially since the
players have to commit to everydesignated event except one.
So I just hope they learn thescheduling for next year.
Granted, it looks like theworld of golf is about to go
under a lot of changes inscheduling.
I don't really know what you dofrom here, but we'll see.
(12:25):
We'll see.
That's kind of what I took awayfrom this one.
They've definitely done themajor followed by the designated
event in the past, but I don'tthink they went across the
country to play a very gettablecourse for these guys.
So just the way it's set up it,just it wasn't my favorite.
I think we needed a little bitof downtime as fans.
(12:48):
But now let's get into PatrickCanley.
I'll just cover him just alittle bit.
Patrick Canley is not myfavorite golfer to watch, and I
don't mean that rudely.
He's just a very, very slowplayer.
He's not very emotional, he'skind of boring to watch.
He played incredible golf today.
(13:08):
It wasn't enough to win.
He had a chance at a solosecond finish and then missed a
three or four foot putt to thefinish where he did which I
think was tied for fourth andprobably lost a lot of money In
one single putt.
But he's just.
He's just not my favoritegolfer to watch.
(13:29):
However, what I do admire abouthim and what I think any golfer
could learn from him is the dudeis as poised as can be.
Kind of like Scotty Scheffler,he doesn't react too too much to
to miss shots.
It's just another, another shotthen, and that's okay.
(13:49):
He does react a little bit fromtime to time, but I love the
poise He's.
He's one of the most poisedplayers on tour, and does that
make him marketable?
Maybe not, but he's still doingjust fine financially.
He's had a great year, a muchbetter year than I ever thought
when I went back and looked athis results leading up to this.
He's had some, some secondplace, some third place And I
(14:12):
think he's had around seven toptens.
I think it's around that.
I don't know the exact set onme, so don't quote me on it, but
he hasn't had a single win allyear And I think that's kind of
tainted my view of him.
Zach and I just had a talkrecently that why is he ranked
number four in the world?
(14:33):
Not really sure, but justbecause he hasn't had a win
doesn't mean that he hasn't hada pretty decent season.
He's been in contention morethan I really thought that he
was, so props to him.
Another couple of golfers totalk about Ricky Fowler.
Let's talk about him real quick.
He posted a 60 on Saturday.
(14:55):
He shot a 60.
And then in a press conferencethey ask him hey, ricky, have
you ever shot under 60 before ina non-competitive round?
And he goes yeah, i shot 59.
And I was playing against JohnRom who shot a 60.
John Rom shot 60 and a headmagic into Ricky Fowler and lost
.
And that is why you know thesegolfers are incredibly,
(15:21):
incredibly, incredibly good AndI hope Ricky ends up getting a
win very soon.
Hope he gets a win very soon.
So I would love to see it thisyear.
I don't I'm not forecasting itto be this year.
I would love for it to be, butI think he'll get one before the
end of the calendar year And Ithink for sure he's going to get
(15:46):
one in the on the PGA tour 2024season is what I think,
whatever the scheduling lookslike.
But I think all his hard workis paying off.
I think he committed to a swingchange.
He committed almost to aphilosophy change.
He's tried changing this way acouple of times before, but this
one is working out for him.
It looks way better than hisother motions have in the past
(16:11):
And I really do like where he'sat in terms of his swinging out.
It's better than it's ever beenin my professional opinion And
I think the hard work is goingto pay off and he's going to.
He's going to win again.
The final golfer I want to touchon is actually Ches Brevy.
Ches Brevy, it's not the mostaesthetically pleasing swing out
there, but I love that.
(16:32):
He just gives the short hittersin the world.
I hope that they can compete.
He's ranked 185th in clubheadspeed on tour 185th.
He's ranked 173 in drivingdistance at about 280 yards, but
every year he finds himselfatop the leaderboard and every
(16:55):
so often he carves out of whenhe won in 2021.
He won in 2019.
I think he's got threecompetitive wins.
He's been a member of the PGATour since 2008 and he's, i
think, won like $21 million overthose years.
Like he's not long by any meansin comparison to other PGA Tour
(17:16):
players, but he's found a way tomake it work.
He's pretty good with his irons, got a pretty polished short
game.
He's pretty nice little putteras well.
I like him and he's reallygrown on me a lot because I
think what we see on TV a lot is320 yard drives.
Next have your irons hit theball to the moon land softly.
(17:40):
We just have all these powerplayers that we know and are
just in love with of seeing Roryhit like a 220 yard seven iron
that lands soft.
Then we have Rom hit like a 200yard eight iron.
I think Finau can hit an eightiron 200, no problem, these guys
can bomb the ball.
(18:01):
So every soft into CA, a golferthat isn't nearly as long as
those guys has to complete thehas to play the course
completely differently thanthose guys.
I like that guy And I thinkmore golfers in our local sphere
who are like consistentlytrying to break 80, i think they
(18:21):
could learn a lot from, fromChes Revy, just because he is so
polished with the irons, he isso polished around the greens
and he I don't think he takeslittle pups for granted, he's
just.
He's just a solid all aroundplayer.
It's not a name you're going tosee when a lot of tournaments,
but as a player who just findshimself in the mix a few times a
(18:42):
year And I think that's great,i have nothing but respect for
that guy.
He's also not the biggest guythere is out there.
It is a very what I would calllike a wonky swing, but he makes
it work And I got nothing butbut respect and love for Ches
out there.
So are there any other talkingpoints?
(19:02):
I don't think so.
Please know that pure golf isvery committed to the quality.
Not every podcast sounds perfect, but we want to be committed to
what we say we're going to do.
If we say we're going to dosomething, we want to get it out
there.
So this one is was no fault ofour hands.
(19:25):
It was just a really tough flowof a conversation.
It was definitely more on mebecause I wasn't as prepared as
I need to be.
So we're going to we'll be backon here for Friday podcast,
that Friday podcast.
I'm I'm still deciding whatit's going to be, but we're
(19:46):
going to start posting podcastson every Monday and every Friday
.
Every Monday will be a World ofGolf update.
Every Friday will be more oflike a what can we learn here?
It may it may be about recentevents in the world of golf, or
it may be about a lesson from myteaching or something like that
(20:08):
Just something I've experiencedin the world of golf, but it'll
be something to help you andbetter your game as well.
Just something to take awayfrom it.
At Pure Golf, we are under it'sliterally on our podcast cover.
It says always become better, and that's what we try to do.
So in order to become better, you have to become more
consistent, you have to takeaccountability And when you
(20:29):
haven't made a good podcast, youfigure out a way to make a good
podcast before six am.
That's what we're going to do.
So I apologize, nobody else wason here, but I couldn't take up
more of Ariane's time and andask him to come back on and say
you know what?
let's do this better.
Ariane has a family and so thisone was on me to take care of.
(20:51):
So hope you guys enjoyed thisepisode.
It's definitely a bit of adifferent one, but it's that,
that's life, and we're going todo what we can to keep moving
forward and keep providingreally great content.
So all right guys, have awonderful day, have a great rest
of your week and we will seeyou Friday for our next podcast.
