ایده خلق نژادی برتر از انسانها نخستین بار توسط افلاطون در رساله «جمهوری» مطرح شد. نظر افلاطون، ایجاد جامعه‌ای از انسان‌های برتر بوسیله تشویق افراد برتر جامعه به ازدواج و تولید مثل و بازداشتن افراد فرودست از فرزندآوری بود. این ایده به همین صورت و برای دو هزار سال مسکوت باقی موند تا اینکه در قرن بیستم میلادی، به شکل دیگری و تحت نام "به نژادی" از نو متولد شد
