Держава має право на наш податок, шану та послух, але Бог має право на все наше серце, душу, віру й життя.
Проповідь пояснює, що справжнє християнство не зводиться до зовнішньої порядності чи законослухняності. Бути добрим громадянином важливо, особливо у час війни, коли ми служимо державі, підтримуємо армію і сплачуємо податки. Але жодна «цивільна праведність» не виправдовує перед Богом. Єдина праведність, яка спасає, - це праведність Христа, дарована нам через віру.
У цих словах Ісуса звучить заклик: служи чесно кесареві, але серцем належи Богові. Бо на монеті - образ імператора, а на тобі - образ Творця. І тому все твоє життя - це те, що належить Йому.
