در جامعه شناسی، خانواده کوچکترین و بنیادی ترین گروه اجتماعی است که بنا به تعریف از یک زن و یک مرد و فرزندان آنها تشکیل می‌شود. در خانواده نحوه ی اعمال قدرت در شکل گیری و رشد شخصیت، اجتماعی شدن، عزت نفس و حتی خوشبختی در زندگی زناشویی فرزندان اثر گذار است. در اغلب جوامع ترویج و اشاعه ناتوانی در بین زنان، مرد سالاری، سلسله مراتب ها بر اساس سن، شغل، درآمد، میزان تحصیلات و حتی ایدئولوژی یا تفکر موجبات پیدایش ناتوانی در افراد و گاها نسل ها را فراهم می‌آورد. درک مفهوم قدرت و تفاوت آن با اقتدار و میزان وابستگی فرد به این توانایی ها می‌تواند زمینه‌ی تربیت و رشدی مناسب را فراهم آورد که به موجب آن انسانها با تکیه بر عزت نفس خود از جایگاه اجتماعی شان راضی بوده و در جامعه مفیدتر عمل کنند
