گفته می‌شود سگ اولین حیوان اهلی شده توسط انسان است. سگ‌های کنونی از نسل گرگ‌های باستانی هستند و عجیب است که چرا بجای گرگ [سگ]، همزیستی موجودات دیگر مثل خرس یا گربه‌سانانی مثل پلنگ در کنار انسان جور نشد؟ چرا سگ‌ها اهلی شدند و گربه‌ها هنوز هم چندان اهلی نیستند؟
