جلال متینی، مورخ و متخصص در زمینه تاریخ و فرهنگ ایران اخیرا در روز ۳۰ دی ۱۴۰۳ درگذشت. او که ریاست دانشکده ادبیات و علوم انسانی دانشگاه مشهد را در کارنامه داشت پس از انقلاب ۵۷ مجبور به خروج از ایران شد و به آمریکا رفت. او در سال ۸۶ و در مصاحبه‌ای با صدای آمریکا توضیح داد که انقلاب ۵۷ ایران «مطلقا مردمی» نبود.
او به نقش حزب توده، نهضت آزادی و جبهه ملی و همچنین شبکه بی‌بی‌سی در انقلاب اسلامی ایران اشاره کرد و گفت روشنفکران و مردم همگی فریب خمینی را خورده بودند.
عباس میلانی مدیر مرکز مطالعات ایرانی دانشگاه استنفورد درباره فعالیت‌های دکتر متینی به کتابها و مقالات او اشاره می‌کند و می‌گوید «از شاهکارهای متینی، مجموعه مقالاتی است که درباره بی‌کفایتی‌های شریعتی به عنوان معلم در دانشگاه مشهد نوشت.»
