در گاه‌شماری خورشیدی ایران باستان هر روز نام مخصوص خود را داشت و نام ماه ها به نام امشاسبندان و ایزدان بودند. بدین ترتیب اسامی دوازده گانه ماه ها با نام دوازده رو مشترک می شد. وقتی مان ماه و روز یکی می شد ایرانیان آن روز رو به نام جشن های ماهانه برپا می کردند. جشن شهریورگان هم مثل دیگر جشن های ماهانه برای هم نام شدن روز چهارم که شهریور نام دارد و ششمین ماه هم که شهریور نام دارد برگزار می شود.
