Speaker 1 (00:03):
What would you talk about on your podcast? Elvis Present
fifteen Minute Morning Show. So we're back from our Thanksgiving vacation,
our wedding vacation and all of the above. It's time

(00:26):
for the fifteen minute morning show podcast. Here we go
with Oh, we've got a full house. We've got Gandhi
and Scarry Gart it's not Audie Bee, and there's Danielle
and of course there's a straight mate. Let's go. How
is your Thanksgiving? It's lovely? Know what you told us
during the song? I don't know what I could talk

(00:47):
about that I alluded to something I think you know, Listen,
when people are making plans, just stick to when they
tell you to show up, don't be late, don't be late.
And if you are going to be late, should expect
the consequences of being late if it's a dinner, or
at least say I'm sorry. It was two hours late.
But they knew that because I said, I'm at the parade.

(01:09):
We have to get back from the city. They knew.
They said, don't worry, take your time, we have lots
of appetizers. We will and I said, don't. They were
there were four hours not cool? Not cool? I was
that guy this Thanksgiving the guy who came early, and
it was like, do do you things are not ready yet?
Maybe I can help you guys set up. I hate
that because I don't like when people come early to

(01:29):
my things. Oh there's nothing worse than being early able.
I mistimed it. I thought it was there was going
to be traffic on the way to my brother's house,
and there just simply wasn't drive around the ball, go
to the stars that yeah, you just like pull over somewhere.
Well yeah, or you know for an uber or whatever.
You say, Hey man, we gotta go in circles. So

(01:51):
why when should you show up exactly at the time?
Like if if they said hey, be here at three,
you show up exactly at three, or like three at
three oh five? Does because they're usually not exactly ready
normally at three they need a little more time, would
you say? I say, within like five to ten minutes
after the start time, because you don't want to bring
the doorbell at three. The three oh five is okay.

(02:14):
I know we all know this person. I'm not going
to use the person's name, but they would show up
early and then always be the last to leave. O. God,
don't don't be that the lingerer I know, and you're
you're like packing up to go boxes here you want
some stuff to go? Yeah, the rule as far as
like dishes and cleaning up, you need to volunteer, right,

(02:36):
like water totally really sounds is it? Also yo on
the plastic takeaway containers, because my mother brings a shopping
bag full of them wherever she goes. My sister did
this was so nice. She bought each of us our
own set of takeaway containers. That nice. That is nice
because you can't expect the host to just have like

(02:56):
a closet full of this stuff. I don't know, but
some of my mom did the right thing, but I
think it's a little little techy. I'm like comment on
two things we just talked about. Yeah, first of all
about b YO, just because you bring a bottle of
wine doesn't mean they have to serve it. You're not
bringing it to drink it yourself. You're bringing it as
a gift. I never did see that Camus exactly. Also, Cherry,

(03:21):
thank you also doing the dishes. See, I don't want
you to help me with the dishes, because that's my
time to get away from you to go do the dishes.
What about at least clearing the table? You can help,
but I like to do most of it myself. I
don't want anyone fucking with my dishwasher because I don't
how dishwashers work. I don't want to. I need that
alone time to get away from you. I could see that.

(03:44):
I could see that I'm not trying to be mean.
And how long do you guys sit at the dinner
table for? Because we were there for well, the first
time we were there, I think around thirty five forty
five minutes. This seems like a lot of work building
up for a very short meal. Does that make sense?
Like you spent all all day? Okay, catch up? Get
seconds and not everyone was preparing all day. They just

(04:06):
showed up. Yeah, sorry, what you did? What? I got
to where I was going and they asked me to
hang pictures? So like I got there and they put
me to work. Here the tape measure, a hammer, and
a nail. Can you let's hang up our new artwork? Well?
Can we wait till Thanksgiving? Scotty Peace? How was your

(04:27):
expensive turkey? I told you we had to get a
backup turkey because the original tell us about this heritage bird,
the heritage bird. It was it dry. It was dry.
You know why because the other one we get from
the Williams Sonomo free willie bird, that one is is
a pre brined turkey. And I gotta say brining makes
all the difference, because this one was not briand and

(04:49):
it was a little gamy. And oh you know those
older breeds of bird, they're like wild turkey is actually
mostly dark meat. It's like the mutton of the bird family.
There was definitely a lot of dark meat on this
this thing. And my father pulled me aside and said, Anthony,
just if you can't get the Williams Noma wily bird
next year, don't get anything just that regular butter ball.

(05:13):
I ruined it because because I late, I ordered late
and they only had ten pound turkey did chewy birds lefting?
These were not happy, no, so I had to go
with a backup company. I'm gonna tell you I have
never been disappointed by a butter ball ever. Yeah, I
mean they're filled with chemicals. Seriously, I mean it's like

(05:35):
Chernobyl rolling out of that bird. But it was always
so good. My brother made a turkey for the first
time and it was so moist and delicious. It was
probably one of the best we've ever had. Did you
have I made lasagna? Yeah? Oh god. My keisha's were
the hint of the parade. It was so great. The
kishes you ordered, not me. I didn't make them. I
ordered them, but you know what, they were made to

(05:56):
order and they were beautiful keishas and they were They
went like, my eggs are always funny. You can get
so creative with eggs. Anyone help me out? What what
about the Gandhi? Thanksgiving? What do you guys eat? We
had a great time. So we just we did a
really traditional Thanksgiving this year. My cousin just bought a
house in Nashville. She wanted to host. I think she
will never do it again. My other cousin clogged her

(06:19):
sink during all of the cooking, which caused quite the
problem to put potato peels down the sink. She's like,
I do it in my house all the time. I
can't believe I can't do it. So the sink was
out of order. It caused a lot of drama, but
it was good. It was you know, regular American food.
I am not a fan of turkey ever. I never
have been the sides, though, I love the sides. The

(06:40):
sides are my favorite. She made Brussels sprouts that were
they were speaking of clogging this so you know that
story that comes out every year Brown Friday. It's like
the busiest day for plumbers. I asked my plumber friend.
I'm like, hey, how's Brown Friday going? Go? What are
you talking about? Hey, we get this story every year.

(07:02):
It's like the biggest day of the year for plumbers.
Like you run clogging toilets left and right, he goes.
Nobody ever calls because it's ten times the amount, like
they will charge you double or triple. Thought Super Bowl
Sunday was like the worst day. That actually would be
a good one to that greasy food. They say, a
lot of people just brown fry, let it boil. Yeah,

(07:24):
my sister made Kraft macaroni and cheese is like for
the kids, and I think I ate most of it.
I love Kraft macaroni and cheese. You know, there's actually
a series on History Channel. I think it's the Food
that Made America? Is that one, and they do they
do stories about like Kraft macaroni and cheese, wonder bread
and all the things that were around before us, and
there are places in history. And Kraft Macaroni and Cheese

(07:46):
actually came out during the war and at the same
time another big product came out No No Chef boy
Er d yes, so almost went out of business, but
they saved it because they did rations to send overseas

(08:07):
to the troops. Oh oh, we speaking of wonderbread. That
was one of the floats that came by during the
Thanks community for eade and flavor Flavor behind me my
favorite bread, wonder Bread. I love that. Who that made
America watch all the episodes? The Kentucky Fried Chicken episode
is awesome and hersh when Hershey and Eminem's Mars the

(08:29):
Brothers and how one guy left and oh my god
that you've got to watch that show now that you
just brought that up. That's I was talking to you
about them? Was it? The Mars family how they check
in and check out, like they still have punch cards
even like the CEOs, like the big family, very conservative family,
the Marsians. Wow. Yeah, Like so when they go into
factories they have their own punch card too. And and

(08:50):
then if if you check in five minutes before you're
supposed to start and check out exactly on time. You
get a bonus at the end of the year. Wow. Wow,
that's pretty cool. See, I swear to God switched at birth.
I was born in Mars member and I know I
was born on Mars can I. So I posted something
over the break that I had no idea would cause
so much controversy. What was it? How much I hate

(09:13):
macaroni and cheese. I think it's the most overrated thing
that has ever existed. And you're entitled. I can talk.
I don't like I got a lot of this is.
People were like, how outrageous? How dare you say such
a horrible thing. I don't want to be your friend anymore.
I'm not going to talk to you anymore. You've said
some crazy things. This is the craziest. I'm like, really,

(09:35):
people need things to get mad at. Yeah, but I
don't like it. Okay, that's fine. You don't like macaroni
and cheese. You don't like cinnamon, I don't. You don't
like turkey, Nope, vanilla ice cream? I like flavor. I'm
into flavors, vanilla, good flavors, into the good ones. Okay,
people get really mad about the mac and cheese, So
just the heads up. So there you go. I think
we're all caught up pies, pies like the rest of

(10:00):
the year, Like it's only this like a month, this
pie season. But like, what where do these pies come
from all of a sudden. It's like bakeries. Why I
know that, But why don't you bring them out like
in April or July? I don't know what an April pie.
Here's a question. What's pecan pie? What's that filling pecans? No,

(10:20):
there's something else. It's got molasses and sugar and it's
a it's a goop. I don't know what you call it.
We had one of my dad say, this isn't the
best pecan pie of Ora. They all taste the same.
My sister in law baked the chest pie and I
never had that chest pie so good. From the South,
we had chest pie basically custard. It's like a sugar custard.

(10:44):
Does it look like a chessboard? No? No? And why
do they call it regular chest pie? And they have
lemon chest pie, And you know p D's Pie Companies,
they're kind of famous for the caconi. It was really good.
It's the pie and the cake. No, it's the cake
and the pie cake and a pie. Yeah, filling in.
It's a layer of cake and layer of that sounds

(11:08):
duc double. Something about the turn duck in really weirds
me out. I feel like you're eating you know, like
if a boa constrictor swallowed something. I feel like that's
what you're eating, Like the turkey swallowed, the duck swelled,
the chicken pork roast. I don't know. Have you seen
the videos of the people that put a cornish game
hen inside of the turkey of Thanksgiving and as they're

(11:30):
carving it on the table, like, oh my god, the
turkey was pregnant, you know, and the stupid people are like, oh,
next year. People buy into it. Yeah, yeah, they don't
realize that turkey's lay eggs. That's funny. All right, have

(11:52):
we We've exhausted, exhausted this as you can tell, we're
just now getting back into the swing of things. Shopping

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
