what would you talk about on your on your podcast

(01:05):
firms show scary. It's one of the oddest people I know.
He walks in with a package of food and says,
I'd say, I say to him, what is that? He says,
I don't know. You want some? Well, no, I don't

(01:28):
know what it is. What is it? Well, food appears
here all the time. So I I walked in and
it had a chocolate coating on it, and that's that
was enough. That's all you know. So now look closely.
What is it? It's a wrapper with some sort of
snack food. Yeah, it's a dark chocolate dipped rice A
rice cake. Oh, I wanted to try that. I like
you unwrapped it and took it out. Then you realize
you don't like it. Well because from the top it

(01:49):
looks promising, just this coating of dark chocolate in a circle,
and then you flip it over. It's a rice cakes,
like packing. They're strawberry flavor too. It's a rice well,
first of all, the good. First of all, you know
what a rice cake is and what it isn't, so
you can't you know don't expect something from a rice

(02:10):
cake You're not going to get, but you know you
could judge it against other rice cakes. True, very true.
So as far as is rice cakes go, Bethany likes
it a lot. If you like rice cakes, you're gonna
like this. So if you don't like rice cakes, you know,
don't expect much from a rice cake. Why is that
peculiar to you? Because I just picked up because you

(02:33):
brought a piece of food in. I said, hey, what's that?
I don't know? Want some? There were two of them. Whatever.
It just it just seems like to me that you
would first identify what it is, then you would offer it.
This is related to the It's like the cousin of
this smells terrible. Here, smell yet this taste awful. Here,

(02:55):
try something it is. It's good as far as rice
cakes go, in the universe of rice cakes. I gotta
have gone on for two minutes about this. You have
on this, all right? No, No, we can move on,
all right. So, Uh, it's gonna be back in New
York City. When did you get back yesterday? I got back,
uh early evening because we got a mass text message

(03:16):
saying basically the Eagle has landed safely. The eagle has
landed safely. Yeah. Look, I wanted to stay in South Florida.
I wanted to be there to be a part of
recovering whatever we could do to help people who are
in recovery mode. The problem was is they weren't quite
ready for anything we had to offer. I mean, now
we're starting to hear stories of rescue workers and people

(03:39):
who work for utility companies, the alignment and this and
that out there trying to get power back on the
grid and this and that. They need to be fed.
So now we're hearing little stories about how there is need.
So that's what happens after a disaster. Yeah, there's this
period of like the disaster happens, and then there's this moment,
you know, and that moment can be a couple of

(04:00):
days where everyone's just sort of gathering their bearings and
trying to figure out, Okay, what is our reality right now?
And then things can start to move forward. And I
feel like we're in that place as far as Florida
goes with with IRMA, just sort of like okay, taking stock.
So if someone asked me, so, there you are living
in New York and they need help in Texas, and

(04:22):
they need help in definitely in Florida, now where a
lot of our listeners are located, Like, well, why are
you so so fast to get down there and help
them when you have things in your own backyard in
New York that need attention to Well, yeah we do.
Every community has need. But I tell you what, when
Superstore from Sandy rolled through here, it was such a
matter of moments till people from Texas and Florida were

(04:45):
knocking on our back door asking to help. So therefore
I think we help them, and next time we need help,
they'll help us. And then and then how it works
broke in. Yeah, Well, we had a storm here about
four years ago. We had a snowstorm in early October,
so the leaves were still on the trees choose around
Halloween because they canceled Halloween, and so the weight of
the snow on the leaves pulled limbs of trees down,

(05:05):
and my whole town lost power. A lot of New
Jersey lost power, and we were had no power for
two days. And then Georgia Electric showed up with peaches
on the side of the truck and great to see
that they fixed the power The only downside was there
were some some Georgia boys and we have a family
a deer on my block, and they were all looking
to to, you know, hunt the deer guys. Those are

(05:28):
my dear. But if you fix my power, you can
have one of them. That's called venice. But it was
nice to see how they came. They said, you know what,
if we need to help New Yorkers would come and
help us. We're here. It's great to be able to
help people, and you don't You don't only do it
because you you know, you want them to want to
help you. It's not like you scratch my back, ey
scratch shorts. It's more it's it's it's good to help people.

(05:49):
It's feels good that most human beings are nice and
that's how we think, and we are there for other people.
It's just a handful of them that make you look
like shit. I know, you know what, you bring you
up a good point. Not everyone's an asshole. There, I
said it. The assholes are just louder. I feel like
you know, Tony Molay is here. He works of course
here at Z one. I heart New York and he

(06:11):
and his whole family, whole family they were in St. Martin.
Are you are you tired of telling the story about
how a stove crashed through your wall in your hotel
room in St. Martin? Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, I
can tell it again. I'm gonna write a book. You're
gonna and I'm gonna take all the proceeds and give
it to St. Martin. You know, I was watching um

(06:32):
blah blah blah blah. I was watching oh um news
last night. Uh, the guy with the silver hair and
the glass And I'm sorry, I'm just you know how
it is, after you go through these things, you have
no brains, and you, of all people, more than me,
I have no brains now. And before you know, Anderson
Cooper was interviewing Kenny Chesney, who had a home in St.

(06:55):
John has been living in that community, has personal friends
and St. John that he's met going down to his
house all the time. And he had left before the
storm and his he told his friends who lost everything
in their homes, go up to my house. And they
all hunkered down in this little this little uh I
think the washer dryer room, the laundry room. And they
each took turns holding the door with a mattress so

(07:16):
it wouldn't blow in and kill them all. And he
was just talking about what it's like in the Caribbean.
Of course, in the use territories to deal with what
what's happening there, because the winds out there were ferocious,
insane um it seemed like, and seeing it and then
hearing afterwards like what happened from the meteorologists was that
there were many tornadoes happening inside of the hurricane. So

(07:40):
at points you would and I was stupid about it.
I would walk out and look out this sliding glass
stores every once in a while because you're trapped in
this room for so long, and it's like, well, let
me go see what's going outside, going on outside, And
I would peek out every once in a while, and
you would just see like this stuff being picked up
and buildings being picked up and then just thrown and ripped,
buildings going in circles. It's like that movie Twister, but

(08:04):
you're actually no, it was no, I was waiting for
a cow. I did see a car though, that was
I mean a car like being moved, yes, slingshotted in
the air. By the way, if you've ever seen Daniel drive,
it looks the same way. Yeah, during those those intense moments,
did you all did you always know in the back

(08:25):
of your mind, I'm gonna be okay, it's just gonna
be frustrating until we get there. Yeah. We Honestly, I
didn't think it was a big deal. Um. I mean
before I didn't think it was a big deal. Then
it started happening and it was like, Wow, this is
really serious. And then you start seeing buildings being picked
up and you're kind of like, it's not real. Um,
that's it. It's not real. It's not really how you

(08:46):
get through it? Yeah, and then it all has I
mean it lasted probably about four and a half five hours.
You do you remember anything that happened in the middle
of the craziness that made made you laugh, Like you're like,
sometimes it must get so tense everyone small. Your pressure
steam just need to come out, and it comes out
in the form of laughter and something like my girlfriend's
gonna hate me for saying this, but um, she passed

(09:08):
gas while we were we were we were while we
were category to while we were in the bathroom. Um,
were waiting in the bathroom. Yes, I was right by
the eye, and uh, it made everybody laugh. Yeah, and
it made us laugh and it kind of, um loosened

(09:28):
it up a little bit. Loosen up, loosen up the mood, uh,
a little bit the beginning of your vacation. No, this
was the middle. So we got there. We got there
Saturday morning, really early. Um. And uh then so it
was Saturday Sunday and then you started hearing grumblings about
it Sunday that oh wow, this is getting bad. So

(09:50):
then Monday, Monday afternoon, everybody's like, we need to get
out of here. Um. But because St. Martin is so small,
there's not many flights, and the majority of the flights
come Saturday, and because everybody does, like you know, the
seven days spread from a Saturday to a Saturday. Um.
So there were a couple of flights to Amsterdam and
they were which I have no problem going to, but
they were all completely booked. Um. And there were seven

(10:12):
of us, so it was me And so if you
found you're not going to leave everyone. And I mean,
you know, her parents are are older, and her father
just had knee and hip surgery so he moves a
little slow. So, UM, I couldn't be like, all right,
see you guys, can I ask a really mundane question.
So you rented a car, right and your car was total? Yes,

(10:34):
what do you do? You call the car rental planes? Yeah,
so I called the car rental place on It was
like two days after it happened. I called them, UM,
and the phone was being forwarded to a guy in
the US because the car rental place we knew because
we were walking, was completely leveled. It was gone, UM,
and all the cars that were there were completely gone.

(10:55):
So I called them UM, and you know, he picked
up the phone and the conversation was just like, Hey,
how's it going. I was like, hey, I want to
drop off my car, um. You know what I do
that at? You know, we got here by hurricane, but
I'm getting out of here. And his first thing was, well,
how are you getting out of here? Um? Or how
are you getting out of there? Because everybody's stuck. And
I was like, oh no, they got planes coming, the
military is coming. I just need to drop off my car, um,

(11:19):
you know. And he's like, what was it okay? And
I was like, oh yeah, we're just on the beach
picking up girls, cruising. Man, It's it's all good, it's
all good. But I gotta get out of here. So
I need to know where to drop it off. And
he's like, the guy was like, are you serious? And
I was like, no, I'm not serious. The car is
in the parking lot. Um, it's it's undrivable, but so
is every other car. What do I do? Um? And
he said, just leave the keys at the front desk,

(11:41):
which everybody was doing. Write your name on the envelope,
what the company was, UM, and your email address, and
just leave the key there. UM. But everything was everything
was destroyed. I rented a car. Um. Tara's sister and
husband rented a car, rented a really nice big Jeep.
Destroyed what I always wonder, Like you see the Superhero

(12:02):
movies where they destroyed downtown and I'm like, what do
those people call their insurance? Like, you know, there's cars
on the street that get totaled by you know, and
you're like, no, let's just go into the paper work
involved in this here. And I was really no. I
was really like after it all happened and and you're
just kind of in the days, and I was like,
I gotta go check on the car because you look

(12:24):
out and you just see cars flipped over on top
of At that point, you're just one of many, and
everybody's kind of walking around. You know, what about you
were tourists? What about people who were who lived there?
Did you feel weird leaving them there? I did, because
I'm sure you got to know some of them. Yes,
a lot of them moved into the resort area because

(12:45):
they didn't feel safe the day before, because they didn't
feel safe in their houses. Um. Because the resorts are
made to withstand fifty winds. And that's all they kept saying,
like everybody's gonna be good. These places are concrete, is
triple pained glass. You know, they build the places to
withstand um, these intense winds. Houses don't have triple paying
glass and no, and it was really thick and um.

(13:08):
So a lot of the people, a lot of the
locals moved into the resort area, um with their kids
and the families. So after it all happened, a lot
of them, we met a lot of them, and you'd
be surprised. There was a guy from New Jersey who
nine months ago moved down there, who's a dentist, UM,
an older guy, UM who went down and started to

(13:29):
practice down in St. Martin part time so we could
live on the beach not lived, you know, live live comfortably. Um,
cleans people's teeth every couple of days. Um. But he
was staying in there, and he was like he went
back the next day and said it's gone, like everything
is gone, Like my dental practice is gone, my house
has gone. Now. We we also saw stories of people who, uh,

(13:50):
we're getting very frantic because the food supplies, water supplies
are nil. And I mean there's actual I mean violence,
extreme violence. Um. We carried knives around with us whenever
we went outside. Um. There were people running around with
machetes sticking people up. Um. There were people doing like
smashing grabs where it'd be like a group of ten

(14:11):
people would just run into a floor and kicking every
door and just steal everything they could. And and it
wasn't like they were in there like they were looking
for money, obviously, but but if there was a case
of water, they were taking case of water. It was
more for survival looting situation. I was watching the news
in Miami. It was the opposite people. I don't know
if you saw the news. People were breaking into shoes

(14:32):
stores to save the shoes from being flooded. They were
running there's a new air Jordans. They were carrying electronics
just to make sure they weren't flooded, to make sure
they were safe from the store. Really creepy cousin, he
took a fridge out of sears to make sure it

(14:52):
was treated right. Was telling me that somebody got held
up at gunpoint for a generator. Yes, Um, so there.
So the next resort over, well, one of the guys
step back a little bit. One of the guys who
was in our resort was an electrical engineer. So he
was there with his family and he actually lived on

(15:12):
the island as well. So because everyone from the resort
that worked there disappeared, Um, because they all went home
and never came back because there was no really way
to come back. Um. It was every It was kind
of all the locals and the people that were there.
We're getting together. So this guy was an electrical engineer, um,
and he started the generator up, got it going, did

(15:35):
it himself. Every his collapse. It starts on fire. Um.
A couple of local guys come up, throw bucks water
on it, Uh, put put out the fire, and then
they pull out guns and then they take and they
take the generator and they run away. With the generator.
They're caught on fire. You know that the wires coming
out of the generator caught on fire. So they helped

(15:55):
put that out and still took the work. Thanks you.
