On this episode of "Tommy Talk,” Tommy discusses something we all continue to fight for: staying present so life doesn’t pass us by. With every passing year, life seems to move faster and faster. We don’t want to wake up one day and feel like life completely passed us by, like we spent the one life we get to live focusing on the things that truly don’t matter. So today Tommy is sharing the very specific (and realistic) habits he does to stay grounded in the present and fully experience life as it’s happening. This conversation is for anyone who wants to slow down, let go of what doesn’t matter, and start appreciating the one life we get to live.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hey, guys, welcome to Tommy Talk. And today's topic is
don't let life pass you by. Being present is so
important to being a happier human being. And I was
thinking about this topic because I feel like time is
flying by you guys, do you feel me? Do you
feel like time is flying by? I guess I measure

(00:22):
big milestones in my life and I'm celebrating ten years
married to my husband this month. Ten years boom done,
gone in a flash.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
How did that happen? How did that happen? How has
ten years gone by? I remember my.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Wedding day like it was yesterday, and I remember planning
for my wedding like it was yesterday. I cannot believe
that ten years ago I walked down the aisle and
said yes, and everything that followed happened, my honeymoon and BALI,
all the things. It's like, wait a minute, how how
I was looking at my camera roll and seeing all
these memories pop up, and I got so nostalgic. I

(00:57):
am totally the guy that will shed it tire looking
at memories, not because I'm sad, because I have such
tremendous nostalgia and they mean everything to me. I'm a
very sentimental person, and I don't know. It's like the
years are starting to feel like days. And I always
heard as you continue to go through this life, it
moves faster and faster and faster compared to when you're

(01:18):
a kid.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
And I don't want life to pass me by.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I want to live every damn moment, every damn moment
to the max because I am so grateful to be here.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I truly am.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
I say it every single day in my morning prayers,
like I am grateful to be here and thank you
for choosing me to be here, because I don't take
this life for granted. And I think it feels so
fast because it's I don't know, maybe we're living in
an autopilot.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
The days plur together.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
And you realize you're just kind of going through the motions,
wake up, work, repeat, and maybe you're not really in
the days. You're just going going through what you have
to get done, like a checklist.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
So I don't know.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
I guess I want to live life, and the goal
isn't to cram more in necessarily, it's just about experiencing
more of what's already happening, aka being present.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
It's a fight.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
I fight every single day, every day, because there are
going to be things that take you out of the
present left and right, largely our phones, which I'm starting
to have more of a hate relationship with. And I
don't use that word ever, but it's like, Ah, I
don't want to be controlled by my phone. I really don't.
So I fight to be present. And there's a story
I want to tell you real quick that I'll always

(02:26):
remember where I felt one of the most present feelings
I've ever felt in my entire life. G and I
were hiking in Kawaii, in Hawaii, which is one of
our favorite islands. I haven't been in years. We're due
for a trip back. It's so special to us. We
went a lot when we got together, and we were
hiking with our friends and we get up to this
peak overlooking a valley of gorgeous, lush greenery with waterfalls

(02:50):
and birds flying and the sounds of just magic. It
was magical sounds all around us, and tears were rolling
down my face and I didn't no tears were rolling
down my face and I can't remember if it was
Geo or our friends looked at me and they're like,
oh my god, are you okay? And I was kind
of like what and they're like, you're crying and it
didn't register and I thought, oh my god, and I said, yeah,

(03:13):
I'm good.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
I just feel so damn present right now.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Like look where we are, Look where we are, look
at what we're looking at, Like smell the smells we're smelling.
How are we here in this beautiful moment? I just
feel so present And that is a feeling I want
to continue to fight for and I will never forget it.
I will always remember that feeling. I mean, by now,
it must be like six or seven years ago when

(03:40):
that happened, but the feeling hasn't gone away, which means
it's important to me. It's so important to me. So
how can we be more present? Well, I told you
I work really hard on this, and there's some things
that have helped to me really move through this life
feeling like I'm getting the most out of it that
I possibly can. Now, one of the more obvious things
I guess I'll start with is mindfulness. Right, what are

(04:02):
mindfulness activities that you can be doing for me? Here's
a few things I like to do. I do journal.
I journal weekly, not daily. I feel like daily puts
a lot of pressure on me. If I miss a day,
I'm hard on myself because I'm Type A and I'm like,
oh damn, I should have journaled, And then it becomes
counterproductive because I'm all riled up about it. So I
do it when I can. If it means three days
a week, great, two days a week great. But I

(04:23):
do try to do it a couple times a week.
And what I write in that journal is what's on
my mind. And it is also a gratitude journal, what
I'm grateful for. I always end up talking about something
I'm grateful for, and it's just a good way to
put pen to paper, get out of your head and
have a moment for you.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
So try it.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Order a gorgeous journal on Amazon and do it a
few days a week.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Don't put such strict parameters around it. Do it when
it works for you. Also, I just started, I.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Don't know a month ago, doing yoga a few times
a week. I have a little video on my phone
and I try to do it every other day. And
it's a new activity that I've said I'm going to
commit to because a my body needs some stretching. I
am tight, and I'm like, I gotta stretch this body
out or I'm gonna start getting injuries. And it's also
a mindfulness practice to really start the day in a
beautiful way. So I'm like, you know what I'm gonna

(05:11):
do my stretching routine. It's about a fifteen to twenty
minute video. I do it a few times a week
as well. Again not putting such pressure on yourself where
you have to do something every single day. I love
a good walk. I love being in nature. Get outside,
get outside. We have one life to live. Get outside
and enjoy the nature surrounding us.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
So we have one life to live.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
I want to feel my best my mind, my body,
my spirit, and these are things that I do to
make me feel that way. I want to take care
of this. I want to take care of the body
that I have in my mind and my spirit because
without feeling my best, I can't go through life feeling
my best in my professional environment and my personal environment.
And it's got to be. You gotta be on your

(05:52):
a game to be present.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
You just do.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
So that's kind of more of what I say, like
the obvious things I do. But I hope it reframes
some of these practices that it doesn't make it feel daunting,
it makes it feel fun and light, and like, oh,
I'll do it when it works for me. Number two,
I mentioned the word hate, which I never use. Get
off the phone as much as possible, because, ah, it's
controlling our lives. It's controlling our lives. If you're watching

(06:15):
a movie or TV with your friends or your loved ones,
don't have your phone near you, don't look at it,
flip it upside down, or put it across the room,
because that's taking you out of the present, that's taking
you out of the moment. And yes, it's so tempting
to go on your phone and look at the social
media apps or texts or messages or whatever the case
may be, emails. You don't need to always do it.
Get off of it, Get get off of the phone.

(06:37):
I'm not perfect. I fight for this too. I'm working
every day towards being better about setting boundaries. But like,
why am I scrolling when I want to be on
a walk or when I'm with people I love? No, no, no, no, no,
we don't need it. Don't let that little device control
us because when we're looking down all the time, we're
missing out on everything around us and that's just not cool.

(06:58):
That we don't deserve to miss out on everything around us.
We deserve to be living in that moment, So get
off the phone. I also think you have to find
what makes you feel alive and like you have purpose.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
It can be work.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Maybe work makes you feel that way, or it can
be volunteering, or it can be doing something social or
in activity, whatever the case is. Only you know the
answer to that. But find what makes you feel alive.
What are those things? I know those things for me.
You gotta find out what they are for you, and
you have to do it and make time for it
that I'm so busy. I don't have time for it.
No no, no, no, no no. There are twenty four hours

(07:30):
in a day. Yes, we're all busy. I get it.
But you can carve out a little bit of time
to make you feel alive period. And with that being said,
to kind of piggyback on it. You got to be
open to new experiences and new things, and it's okay
if you fail at them, but be open.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Be open.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
I never really would have guessed to that I would
be doing yoga again.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
I'm like, I don't have time to do yoga. I
work out.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Every day I go to the gym like I can't
add another thing. It's always the negative. It's always that
negative chatter and that negative voice. Yeah, I can't do it.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
I can't do I call it like the grouch comes out.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yes, you can guess what because I was spending moments
in the morning drinking my Macha latte that I make
scrolling stop.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Who cares?

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Go?

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Do that thing?

Speaker 1 (08:12):
Use that time better, right, use that time in a
more wiser way. So just be open to new experiences
and new things and do them, and like I said,
fail at them. It's okay to fail. If you fail,
pick yourself up and try again. It's all good. We
want to be intentional with our time, right, So do
the things that are calling you, that are making you say,
you know what, I want to try that. And with

(08:32):
that being said, say yes, say yes to a concert,
to a trip, to a dinner, break out of your routine.
You don't always have to play it so safe. If
you want to go somewhere for an overnight trip, and
you have really no reason not to go, go do
an overnight somewhere, why wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
You What do you have to lose? Go live like
live your life, try new things.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
I started feeling this way more than ever at the
end of last year as I was approaching forty and
I just are going to concerts more. And I always
want to see Dannity Kaine, a girl group I grew
up with, and I'm like, they're in New York. Why
did I not get tickets. I suck at getting tickets
for concerts And I ended up going the day of
and I said yes, and that was so unlike me.
But I'm like, you know what, I need to live

(09:15):
in the now. Go do something if you want to
do it, because you'll never get that chance again.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
You just won't.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
So I try to fill our lives with activities that
make us feel alive. We love the theater, We make
time for it.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
We go see shows.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
We go see theater because it's important to us, it
matters to us. We love to travel, we go on trips,
we make time for it. You got to make time
for those things and just say yes, even when you
feel like I'm tired or my go to is no stop,
don't I challenge you. I challenge you to say yes.
Be a person that comes from a place of yes.
Don't exhaust yourself into oblivion, but say yes, try new things.

(09:53):
You gotta do it, And I don't know. At the
end of the day, I guess I'm trying to ask
myself more and more of this question, which is is.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Did I choose how I spent today? Right?

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Or did it all just happen to me? And if
you're choosing how you spent your day, then I feel
like you're doing a pretty good job living in the
present because you're consciously making decisions that fuel your soul.
And you're not going to always have a perfect day.
Let's be honest. Life is going to life and life
is going to happen, So you don't need to have

(10:25):
perfect days all the time.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
You just need to feel like you've.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Had more days where you chose what you want to do,
who you want to be, how you want to live,
don't do what you don't want to do, and do
what you want to do within reason. Obviously, work is work.
No one always wants to be at work, but you
got to be at work, so go make the best
of it and then go do the things that fuel

(10:48):
your soul before or after. There's so many hours in
a day. It doesn't have to just be about what
you have to do, what you have to check off.
Go make it as amazing as you want it to be.
I've lost a lot of people over the last year,
year and a half, two years in really tragic ways,
and I guess that also puts it into perspective. God,

(11:12):
we're here for such a short amount of time.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Live. What do you want your story to be?

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Do you want to one day at the end of
your life be reflecting on memories, have someone showing you
a book of memories and.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Be like, Wow, I did that, or I say yes
to that, or I showed up to that.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
I want that. I want that to happen. I want
to smile thinking back on the memories. That's why I
keep a memory box of my last decade of my relationship.
I hold those memories close to my heart. And we
all deserve that. We all deserve that. So here's to
being more present. This is your reminder. You deserve it.
You are owed it. Absolutely you're owed it. I believe

(11:48):
that we are owed to being more present, and I
wish for you a life where you truly can feel
like you are living it in every single way that
you want. So here's to fighting baby, here's to fighting
the good fight, to staying present. I've Never Said This
