(00:00):
It is traditionally the beginning of plantingseason a Mother's Day weekend. And joining
me now the operations manager from pumbCreek Garden Market, Audrey Sharp. Welcome
to the show. Thank you so, Audrey. Are there any big trends
that you're seeing or is there anythingnew or is it just people planting beautiful
flowers and vegetables and join the sameold table. Oh well, all the

(00:24):
above. I think everybody probably remembershow wet last spring was. Yes,
wasn't a big motivator behind getting peopleoutside and getting their gardens planted. I
think we had records rainfall on topof the hail. It was a little
discouraging. So I definitely think peopleare taking advantage of this nice weather that
we're experiencing. They're getting in andthey're purchasing everything while we can. It's

(00:46):
kind of get it while we gotit inventory, and I think people are
just excited to really get out thereand kind of live through the season that
we really weren't fortunate to have lastspring. Well last year, I didn't
end up planning my garden until Imean late It was like June, and
it never really took off, andit was just like a really disappointing summer

(01:08):
because it kind of planted too late. Everything was it was hot, everything
just got leggy, nothing got prettyand full. So I'm not doing that
again. I'm just gonna deal withthe hail and everything else and take care
of that. Yeah, you know, what are people what are the best
things to grow in Colorado? Whatare people buy the most of? You

(01:29):
know, it's a little different everywhere, but I think people are starting to
focus more on some water white choices, and our markets specifically, we really
dedicate a lot of our floor spaceto plants. Select plants. These are
supported by the CSO Heart Program. They get kickbacks every time you purchase products
at our markets. It's high altitudesun throughout tolerant plants. So people are

(01:55):
definitely being a little bit more conscientiousof how much water that they are using
in their yards and their lawns. And these plants are things that they can
plant perennial wives that'll come back everyyear and you're not dedicating so much of
your time in your life watering allthese things. So I definitely think that's
something that people are taking off on. And you know, this year is
peany of the year we really havean awesome selection. We got them early.

(02:20):
You don't really see peonies until youknow, a little bit more summer.
We got them in for the springtime. But we're locked and loaded on
all the flavors and varieties of those, and people are definitely seeing them earlier
than they've ever and they're purchasing themwhile we've got them. Well, then,
what kind of conditions do do paniesdo best in? Because I've got
two in different parts of my yard. One of them is pretty shaded and

(02:45):
it never gets big, it staysrather small. The other one has more
of a full sun situation and thatworks a lot better. Is what is
the ideal condition for panies? Ithink it differents for everybody. I mean,
it's it's definitely a false time,but it takes a little bit of
shade too. It doesn't like thehigh heat. I think the ideal environment

(03:06):
for p andies for us here inDenver with our altitude, is a little
bit more of east facing sun.You know, it's not as harsh as
the west facing at night, butif both you just might need to might
need to deadhead more. You know, those there's such less as height layered
flowers. So if it's in anarea that is getting a little bit too

(03:27):
much fun. You know, planta tree, create some shade around it.
You can. You can definitely plantsome vertical, high growing plants next
to your peonies to kind of giveitself its own cannot be shade next door
to it, but ideally it canbe both east and west. I think
it just does better with the morningsun if you can plant it on the
east side. I got that, all right. Do you have any tips

(03:47):
for this ring versus previous years onyou know what's different? Yeah, I
mean, I think you're right.Everybody suffered with all this rainfall that we
just weren't used to. I mean, you're not the first person that we're
hearing from that didn't have like thebest success of late blooms, and a
lot of people had a lot oftheir crop tail damaged. So I think

(04:09):
this year it's just taking advantage ofthe sun while we've got it. Definitely
get some perennials and ground before itgets too hot to give them a little
boost on their establishment. And youknow where the markets that you should be
shopping at as far as their inventorygoes, we're super packed for this weekend.
It is going to be a busyweekend, so we're just encouraging people
to come in during the week beforeeverybody gets crazy on Saturday for Mother's Day

(04:33):
gifts and take a look at ourinventory and you know, talk to staff
there will definitely help create a plan. Whether you're doing an install with an
annual patio pot or you want toredo a perennial garden at home. We've
got the staff and we've got theplants, so come in and talk to
us. Now, you guys actuallydo pop up shops? Do you actually

(04:53):
have brick and mortar locations as well, or do you just reposition every year
in different locations, Because I didput a link on the blog to day
if people want to know where PlumpGreek Garden Market is and all of the
various locations all over the metro. So do you have brick and mortar stores
or you just do these pop ups? You know, Mandy, thank you
for asking that. We're actually theretail side of a wholesale greenhouse. So

(05:15):
our brick and mortar is technically ourgreenhouse in our vata, so everybody is
buying local. All of this isgrown underneath our Colorado Sunshine. Our pop
ups on the retail side, theseplum Creek carden markets. We open these
for two months a year just tothe public, so you guys have a
chance to buy high quality wholesale productthat you don't normally have the chance to
buy. You know, a lotof these garden centers are closing more closing

(05:38):
than opening, so we just foundan opportunity to pop these markets up just
for the customers to have a chanceto buy betting plants from us. Do
you guys, can you make recommendationsif somebody wants to buy a plant for
their mother, and maybe their motherhas a black thumb and not a green
thumb. I mean, because I'mtraditionally like what I want for Mother's Day
As I go and I buy allmy plants, plant on my deck,

(06:00):
garden, I garden only on mydeck. So my husband knows that I
just want to go and buy abunch of stuff. But what do you
recommend if somebody wants to my giftfor their mother. We have beautiful hanging
baskets, like gorgeous patio pots, their instant beauty. We did the work
for you. You can come inand take this look at what we've got.
We've got staight hanging baskets as wellas son hanging baskets. This is

(06:24):
the perfect gift for Mother's Day.Come in and get it. I mean
it's the start of a color potfor the summer. So it's instant beauty
that you can add really quick. And we have probably I don't know sixty
different varieties in the hanging basket.Wow, here they look amazing. Do
you guys have deer resistant stuff? And how accurate are those deer resistant tags

(06:46):
as someone whose garden has been eatenmultiple times by deer? Well, you
said them for yourself. Nothing islike guarantee, but we definitely have some
suggestions of some deer deterrent. Youknow. Ardimisia is a plant family that
you should be shopping in anything fuzzybunnies don't like green onions. It's the
great companion plants to put in gardensas well as your bed cheese to keep

(07:10):
funnies out. Come and talk tous and see what we've got on floor.
We've definitely got options for people thathave issues. That's here and funny
and all of that stuff. Plumcreekgardenmarketdot Com is the website I really really
appreciate your time this morning. Ithas been This is one of my favorite
times of the year, Audrey, because it's like hope spring. Hope springs
eternal, right, Like you plantall your little tiny plants and your big

(07:33):
containers and you wait for them toget bigger. But that first day when
you get everything done and everything looksso pretty, it's honestly my favorite day
of the year. So I appreciateyou, Audrey Sharp, Operations, manager
of plum Creek Garden Market, formaking time for me today. Absolutely,
thank you. Mandy all right, thank you
