Speaker 1 (00:00):
Man Hey rops.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
This football season, Bell Bank has giving one kf an
listener each week one thousand dollars to pay it forward
to a charity of their choice. Just head over to

Speaker 3 (00:42):
We do we have an interview maybe with Chris Finch
last week that we can replay for like seven minutes
as we await for Kevin O'Connell. As we awake Kevin O'Connell,
I'm gonna go out there and take care of some business. So, uh, Nordo,
why don't uh, why don't you riff for about two minutes?
It's two and a half minutes if you don't mind

(01:02):
including double B in the conversation and giving a little
pop to packer.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Review. Yeah, review that podcast.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Uh, that's an option, but that's not meaning we are
limited only to that option. But nevertheless, it's an option.
He's he's a family member and they're they're they're happy
about their podcast.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
So I'll be right back.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Indeed, it's between that are ripping the wild? Which one
one you like to go to?

Speaker 5 (01:28):
Well?

Speaker 1 (01:28):
The Wild art tonight Brett what do you think.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
This is a tough matchup and if they're going to
turn things around again the the deserved to Wino meter
and they're playing well and they're getting bad breaks. It
only goes for so long, and it's just against a
really bad Sharks team I think only had one win
before that. To lose in that fashion, even if they
wanted an overtime, I'd still be like, the performance is
not great. This Jets team is good. I'm I'm very concerned.

(01:55):
My panic level for the season is still moderate. On
my panic level short term is very extreme. Well here,
here's what I'm curious about.

Speaker 6 (02:03):
So, I mean, it's it's frustrating that we can just
switch sports and switch teams, even switch cities, and in
some ways we're kind of talking about the same thing
where my favorite squad, the Minnesota Vikings Brett I actually
don't have an interest at this point in pumping packer review,
preview or any of that. It's available to freetradipp of

(02:23):
course it is. Your quarterback was unbelievable the other night,
and that's where we're going to leave it. But whether
it's it's it's a roster situation, quarterback quandary that that
we're enduring at this stage and happy to see JJ back,
and maybe our expectations over the course of the season
now have to change given what we've seen through three
and four. Similarly, from from the hockey standpoint, right out

(02:43):
of the gates, you're missing Stem for a couple of months.
Dukie uh not dukie Zuki for a couple of months.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Excuse me?

Speaker 4 (02:49):
Wow?

Speaker 6 (02:50):
And and we have we have a situation now where
we're trying to we re up gus Bus and gust
will give you a shutout, maybe an unopening day, but
then they'll offer up for the next night. Volstett raising
that kid on the fly. What's been in front of them?
It's like you you have a known commodity like a
brock Faber, but as he truly been the brock Faber

(03:12):
that you know. Maybe not about ze William and what
his growth arc is supposed to be. Carill, Caprice off
and Boldie, you know, front line, just front running and
all of that offense early, but then you see Carill
maybe with a turnover or two in some bad spots
the other day, and you mentioned the awful Sharks team
in town, and it's just it's it's kind of interesting Brett,

(03:33):
where we have changed sports and we have changed cities,
but in some ways it's it's it's certain people that
you rely on for a lot not coming through and
the new kids still finding their way through things post time.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
It's just it's interesting as we watch it.

Speaker 6 (03:50):
But yes, definitely needing, definitely needing two points tonight against
those Winnipeg Jets. Is as now we've all been waiting.
The ripping has been completed. Kevin O'Connell, What up?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
And boom, x'es and o's with Kevin O'Connell is in
the air.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
Hi, good morning, guys. How are you good now?

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Are things doing all right?

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Getting after it? Excellent?

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Excellent Lions this weekend and Kevin O'Connell, x'es and o's
picture time Ready here we go three two.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
One two three, jeez.

Speaker 4 (04:24):
There we go.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Uh yep, the Lions this weekend noon kf A n
Thursday at SOFI against the Chargers.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
That whole day I had a highlight. I had a
highlight from that day.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
I want to see if it was like in the
if you had a highlight from that day and night,
see if it's it's in the same realm sitting in
the lobby of the team hotel when you and Chris
Finch met each other for the first time, and to
hear you guys talk about game plans and how you
put things together and stuff like that. That, uh, that

(04:58):
was an honor man. That was really really cool first
time you met Fnchi.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
Yeah, it was awesome.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
I've been a fan of his for a long time
and getting a chance to stay in the same hotel
and connect for a cup of coffee there and appreciate
you helping to connect connect those two worlds, you know,
moving very quickly, but we found a little bit of
time and unbelievable guy and very smart and just I
just love hearing you know, other coaches, regardless of the sport,

(05:26):
just leadership and how they prepare their teams and how
it's different from how we do things right in the
football world where it's one game a week for seventeen
plus weeks, and they're playing a lot of games and
they're playing you know, they're they're traveling a lot more,
they're doing a lot of different things, and just you know,
you can always learn something, especially from somebody as smart
as as.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Finchy, the the X's and o's with Minnesota Vikings head
coach Kevin O'Connell as the topics today that include, but
are not limited to, jumbo packages, jailing Christian Darisaw, beefeaters,
and quarterback Carson Wentz, who has hit the injured reserve scenario.

(06:09):
He'll be out for the season. We have talkbacks each
and every week with Kevin O'Connell. No, no, and and
here's that talk back.

Speaker 7 (06:17):
Now, Hey, coach O'Connell, this is Brandon from North Dakota.
We're in obvious Carson Wentz territory here. I was at
his first game, bought custom jersey, all that. Obviously, the
public doesn't know what each player goes through week to
week in the NFL. Can you just speak to Carson's
toughness those five games and sort of what that meant

(06:40):
to the team in the locker room.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Thank you, and Carson. I believe for this year, maybe
forever will go down. And I guess I'm speaking for
you right now, so if I'm wrong, I apologize. He
will go down as one of the gave his very
best when his very best was required. And you didn't
win them all and he didn't complete them all, but
he gave his best.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Yeah he did.

Speaker 5 (07:03):
And uh, Brandon, it's a great question. I'm really glad
that that you asked that question, because a lot of
times in the you know, the the weekend and week
out hustle and bustle of a season, you forget the
commitment that these players make to being out there for
their teammates and and Carson. When Carson got here, you know,

(07:25):
I was excited about getting to know the person and
the and the player who I had known a lot
about for for a lot of his career, but getting
him in here and watching the way he worked and
watching the way he prepared both when he you.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
Know, was the you know, was the guy.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Uh. And and obviously before that, even you know, before
he knew if he would get any snaps this year
based upon you know, JJ and and and JJ's health.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
So as we.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
As we went into Carson's opportunity to play, you know,
very smart, obviously, big, strong guy. So he he literally
said to me, you know, when when he first started playing,
he was just so excited to play meaningful football again.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
It had been a few years.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
He had gotten a little time here and there, but
playing in real games with a chance to help his hometown.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
Team and a team he grew up rooting for win
football games.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
So throughout the journey with him, you know, I was
really proud of the way he battled both on the
field physically and we can get to that here in
a second, but also just the mental side of preparing
and trying to truly submerge himself in our offense and
how to try to have a lot of success.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
And really four out of the five games, I.

Speaker 5 (08:34):
Think we had over right around or higher than three
hundred and fifty yards of offense.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
So he was running the machine, running the engine. And
you know there's.

Speaker 5 (08:42):
Always plays where a guy's getting his initial exposure to
the offense where either he would like to have him back,
or play calls I would like to have back, or
ways we could make things even more high level functioning
as an offense. But with what we were dealing with
upfront and some of the injury adversity there with you know,
multiple combinations playing in front of him during that time,

(09:04):
his consistency PA was really something to be admired.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
And also the way he prepared each week.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
Uh, you know, part of the you know, once he
once he sustained the initial injury to his left shoulder
against the Browns.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
It was really a matter of.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
You know, getting the medical uh you know interpretations where
you know, once Carson was told, you're you're gonna have
to get this fixed, but you really can't make it worse.
I believe, I believe his his his phrase to me was,
I I want to take advantage of this opportunity. I
get to play, I get to play with this coaching
staff and these players for the Minnesota Vikings. I want

(09:40):
to exhaust this every possible way, uh.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
That I can.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
And and I know JJ will be back at some
point here as he gets healthy. But this is a
genuine opportunity where I can help this team win. And
the way he you know, consistently demonstrated such physical toughness
to go along with mental toughness, knowing uh that ultimately
I'm have to get this fixed. And you know a
lot of guys play with torn laborams throughout the season.

(10:05):
A lot of guys wear that harness, but not everybody's
a quarterback. And although it was not his throwing shoulder,
you're still going to take hits and have to kind
of weather the storm.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
And the dialogue between Carson and.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
Myself was was great every single week as long as
he was able to have full strength, and knowing that
the shoulder was stable, he felt like he wanted to
continue to give it a go and and and play
as long as he possibly could, knowing he was helping
the team and in some tough circumstances, but also the
opportunity to play and feel that again, like Carson Wentz

(10:39):
deserves to feel so so much credit. And I hope
Vikings fans just understand, you know, his commitment level to
helping this team try to win some football games and
what it was like on the minute to minute daily basis.
And we've had a lot of guy, tough guys play
the quarterback position here, but Carson is definitely somebody that
deserves to be wildly applauded for his commitment, his dialogue

(11:03):
with with myself and our medical team throughout that time,
and ultimately, you know, we we had a conversation pretty
early in the morning when we arrived back from LA
and and kind of, you know, Carson for the first
time was like, it's time, I need to I need
to get this thing fixed, and and uh, you know,
we were we were in full support as as we
were the whole time. But at the same time, there

(11:25):
is a mentality to the quarterback position where when a
guy is so committed and so all in and does
not want to be taken off the field, you you know,
you have to honor that. I don't know if it's
the former quarterback in me or not, or Josh McCown.
And as his quarterback coach, you know, having been been
in the in the arena the way Josh was as
a quarterback in the NFL for a long time, you

(11:47):
want to give the warrior a chance to kind of
exhaust those opportunities and and once again, knowing that he
couldn't make it worse, and knowing inevitably he would have
to get it fixed, and while JJ was working his
way back, you wanted to make sure we gave him
every opportunity to do that. I'm really proud of Carson
and we'll forever have a bond because of, you know,

(12:08):
this time together.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
So I mean that that has to be difficult. During
the course of a game, you're managing a game, you're
calling the place all right, so you're down multiple scores, yep.
But I've just learned over the years how all of
you are wired. Whether you're down you know, eight or
say nine seventeen or whatever, is really until it's over,

(12:29):
You're not going to say it's over. So therefore, I
think is it fair to say that all sides where
all sides feel the best decision was always being made
in in in with with Carson Wentz and his health
in mind. In other words, when I say, you know, Carson, yes,
I want to play you. Yes, I want you to
play obviously, medical staff and everything, it seems like and

(12:52):
the surgery too, the season inning surgery, it seems like
all sides feel the best decisions always were made.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
Yeah, And I think it's very very important that the
dialogue with myself and the player always takes place after
the dialogue with the player and the medical staff, and
then the medical staff making sure that you know, uh one,
Carson is capable of continuing. The circumstances really had not

(13:23):
changed from the time he sustained the injury kind of
late in the first half against the Cleveland Browns. It
was really just, you know, the ability to just tolerate
when certain types of hits or falls on that shoulder happened.
The pain tolerance, and and that's where Carson had made
the determination that he wanted to, you know, fight and

(13:45):
and really play as long as he possibly could. And
there were some times there in the second half where
you know, as a head coach, you're you're you're looking
for confirmation from Carson and the medical staff that you
know he's he's still good to go, and you get that. Ultimately,
you want to do what's best for the player and
ultimately give him an opportunity to kind of as long

(14:06):
as medically you're in the clear, you want to make
sure you give that player the runway, especially with the
kind of toughness and determination that Carson had to kind
of finish the job.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
And you're right, we don't.

Speaker 5 (14:17):
Ever our game is one where you're always a player
two away from either getting back in the game, even
off of you know, Josh Mattel's interception and we score
that touchdown, you're really thinking one stop and then you
get one more. That's how we think, that's how we compete.
That's how we've been able to come back and win
a lot of one score games by having that mentality.
As games go and and as games kind of come

(14:40):
towards the finish line, you find a way to win
a football game. And you're if you're ever in this
business and thinking that you are not playing like that,
you're probably not.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
Not in the right business.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
And that goes for coaches and players, and that just
speaks to who Carson is and but not no Pa,
And there was never a point time where medically we
were going against the grain of what was in Carson's
best interest and ultimately what Carson ultimately wanted to kind
of see through until he ultimately made the decision that

(15:14):
he wanted to get it fixed. Which have so much
respect for not only the commitment to play as he
as he showed and many of the things he did
playing on the field for our team, but also that
when when Carson said it was time and he wanted
to get that thing fixed, you know, we wanted to
make sure that we were in full support of that.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
And as a former player, then an assistant coach, then
a Super Bowl winning coordinator, and now head coach of
the Minnesota Vikings, you I mean, you've seen so much
over multiple decades. Here's what I mean is you're going
to come across players now or twenty years ago who
may not be able to handle a little bit of

(15:55):
pain as well as some people handle a lot. So
it could even be tap out factory and sat feeling
it for whatever the ancillary reason other side of it
like Wentz. And here's why I bring it up, because
when when when he tore up his ACL at the
La Coliseu, I'm playing for the Eagles, yep. A year
they're going to win the Super Bowl. Well, I don't
know if he was completely straight with the medical staff

(16:17):
when he came over to the sideline.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
They feel things and they're like, well, yes.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
He went back out into the game and I think
he threw a touchdown and they're they're they're they're going
for the one seed and my man is an ACL
and like an LCL or something like that, and he
goes back into the game. I'm not saying he wasn't
being completely straight or but they they pretty much from
what I understand, laid it out to him like this
is the situation. It's not going to get worse, and

(16:43):
he went back out through a touchdown pass to help
them get the one seed. So he would be one
of those players who, it just seems, wants to play
through almost anything. But what I think would be difficult
for you is that discernment in the middle of the battle,
you see what I'm saying here.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Yeah, there's just a lot to it, man, Yeah, there is.

Speaker 5 (17:02):
But I you know, I think it is important that
you know, you have protocols in place, and we have
one of the best, you know, complete medical teams that
that I've ever been around, from Tyler Williams and his.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
Entire Tyler's as impressive as I've ever met.

Speaker 5 (17:16):
Yeah, in his entire athletic training staff. But then also
you know, our orthopedic surgeons that travel with us. We've
got some of the best and and and I know
Carson had consulted with Neil Elatrosh, who is somebody I
worked with directly in Los Angeles who maybe is the
if not the best that you know, you you know,

(17:36):
it might be you know, one of our guys here.
But he had, you know, consulted with you know, a
lot of people involved to make sure first and foremost,
because we weren't going to let him back on the
field if he could possibly hurt himself more. And once
that was determined that he couldn't, then it was more
about Carson and his individual kind of decision to you know,

(17:58):
do what he thought was best. Where as a head coach,
you just have to be supportive of that player if
you know that he could get to full strength every week, which.

Speaker 4 (18:08):
He was able to do.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
He was able to participate fully in practice and quite
honestly had some really really good practices throwing the football around,
running the show. So you know, every single although this
was a three game circumstance from Cleveland to Philadelphia to
the Chargers on a short week there, I believe we.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
Exhausted all aspects of.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
You know, dialogue, you know, the medical side of things,
as well as ultimately, you know, Carson making this decision
in the end.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
You know, I know this. The most important thing for
me is.

Speaker 5 (18:42):
Always that one on one dialogue with the player, and
Carson and I spent a lot of time together kind
of making sure throughout that he absolutely felt like this
was the best thing for him, and he did.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
Kevin O'Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, x as
the nose. So now we move on you. You, as
you've mentioned many times, you want to get a full
week of practice out of JJ McCarthy reports, and he
practiced yesterday, come back Wednesday, get up to the Lions game,
get a full week out of him. He starts, I
don't know, I haven't seen any quarterbacks walking around the facility.

(19:16):
Put the field house lights on, peaked in there for
a second, you thought I saw John Skelton, So then
I just ran the other way. Just kidding, But what
do you do? Do you roll with the kids now?
I mean McCarthy brosmurt I mean, let's just roll with
the kids. You love them both?

Speaker 5 (19:33):
Yeah, No, JJ, JJ is in a good spot, had
had some really good work yesterday and he should get
a full full week of preparation in here and finally
feels like he's truly ready to go be himself and
in regards to his ability to function at the position,
but also do the things that JJ McCarthy can bring
to our offense from a from a mobility standpoint and

(19:56):
his ability to protect himself in many ways right from
his ability to play with great timing and rhythm from
the pocket, but he's also got the ability to create
and do some things off the schedule of the play.
And then Max, I've made no secret for an undrafted
free agent my feelings on Max. I've I've been excited

(20:17):
about Max and his continued progression as a rookie in
the NFL continues to be you know, arrow up and
an exciting time for him and his growth and development.
And he'll he'll step into the number two role. And
and whether we end up adding you know, another guy here,
just you know, making sure our quarterback room is complete

(20:37):
and prepared for as much as possible. As we've learned,
you've got to be ready for just about anything.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
Well, McCown just played a few years ago, and you
think about that Bill Russell used to be the player
coach of the Boston Celtics. It's an option Kevin O'Connell
x as and o's so and and it's good to
know that dari Saw and O'Neill are back to practicing
and and they've practice. Just everything's been so in and
out with those situations like that, and and the reason

(21:05):
being is it's just I just know, it's so tough
to win games consistently when you don't have your offensive tackles.
With all due respect to people filling in well, you know,
especially when they're they're both very good. And I think
the case in point, you know, just right in front
of us took place Thursday night, the Chargers get Joe

(21:26):
Alt back.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
I'm not going to say that he's Walter Jones or
Orlando Pace Rings.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
Cartin very good and a lot of things change with
them too, from a huddle leadership, getting things squared away, physicality.
So it's just it's difficult when you have a Darisa
and an O'Neil to not have them for a long
period of time and consistently win.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Do you agree? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (21:46):
And I give you know, Brian O'Neil did everything he
could possibly do to to try to get ready to
play that game, but just couldn't quite get medically cleared.
And and you know, I think Christian, you know, from
a standpoint of the timetable of his injury and which
was a significant injury, you know, pa uh it was.

(22:08):
It was a significant injury for you know, Christian's a
big man and a very powerful man. But the way
he's attacked his rehab throughout the entire process has been
an inspiration to a lot of guys around here. He's been,
you know, kind of somebody that everybody's kind of looked
looked at as you know, a tip of the cap
to him throughout and he's absolutely crushed the timeline that

(22:31):
they had for him medically, and and the doctors have
really been impressed with what CD has been able to
do and and and fully clear him to play. Now
you're just in a mode where there is you know, obviously,
as he works himself back within kind of that timeline,
it's going to be a process for him, and every
snap we can have him out there as a positive,

(22:51):
he continues to grow and get stronger and feel more
and more comfortable. And I think that process will only
be enhanced here with some of the work he's obviously
got and he's been a huge impact when he's been
in there, and ultimately we hope now eight straight weekends,
we should have a Sunday game, full weeks of preparation,
CD on a real, ironclad, crystal clear plan to have

(23:12):
him prepared and ready to go for as much of
that football as we can have him for because he's
obviously a franchise left tackle.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
In the Chargers game and something that I think is
starting to take place league wide a little more than
maybe even last year. Here's what I'm talking about. They
got this player, Scott Matt Locke. Okay, this forty four
he was their fallback yep, in front of Kamani Vidal.
Kamani Vidal and he played thirty eight plays the three
games up to your game, played forty one plays in

(23:41):
your game. Okay, So here's what I'm getting at is
starting with the Steelers in Dublin and Spencer Anderson and
that monster tied in Darnell Washington through I think Fred
Johnson came in for a pass play that was a
touchdown for the Eagles, and then this the jumbo package
is how do you get offenses out of these jumbo packages?

Speaker 5 (24:04):
Well, I think, you know, it's been one of those
things where when you look at what we do defensively,
and especially now that there's a little bit more inventory
of plays and seeing over the course of Flow's time
here that they can create a lot of problems.

Speaker 4 (24:18):
We're seeing a lot more.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
First it was, you know, you just saw much much
more twelve personnel, two receivers, two tight ends and running
back in the game. And now it's only being enhanced
even more by you know, being in those bigger groupings,
but adding another offensive lineman in place of that second
tight end, but essentially trying to mitigate as much problems

(24:42):
and risk that our defense can present if you don't
have enough to block at the point of attack, or
you are trying to be physical in the run game.

Speaker 4 (24:51):
It may shrink your playbook elsewhere, but you are.

Speaker 5 (24:54):
Anytime you play against the Brian Flor's defense, you already
have to have somewhat of a shrunken down play book
because of all the exposure to risk that you do.
Show up to the stadium knowing is out there, especially
when our group's at full capacity and you have the
ability to, you know, turn those guys loose with the
full gamut of a menu. But yeah, it's clear if
people are trying to get bigger against us, they're trying

(25:16):
to cover up more gaps. They're trying to make sure
that they have all the edges accounted for and try
to have as many positive plays without having negatives as possible,
because that's really when our defense can be at their best,
when they're forcing those negatives getting you into third and
long situations. Really, the Eagle game kind of was an
outlier as far as their ability to convert. Yeah, on
some of those third and twelve, third and fifteens, that

(25:39):
were some backbreaking conversions when historically our defense has gotten
off the field on those plays, and you got to
credit them, But then we also have to take a
look at it as a coaching staff and figure out
how do we get people in more you know, second
and long into third and longs and then ultimately how
do we get off the field when those downs come up,
because they're critical, huge plays in the game.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
With young quarterbacks or newquarterbacks to a team which could
even be you here in twenty twenty two. Cousins have
been here, been in the league, but it's new. But
let's just go with young quarterbacks. How many generally do
you need to see before you kind of have a
feel for what you have? Is it like twenty ish?
And here's why I asked, because Josh Allen one of

(26:20):
the best quarterbacks in the NFL all right in twenty
eighteen when he was a rookie ten touchdowns, twelve interceptions,
fifty two percent on the completions. Okay, you look at
that then, and you look at Josh Allen now or
really from like his twenty second start on well, he's
become one of the very best in the NFL. So
do you have a number or is it impossible to

(26:40):
have a number, Like I can't put a blanket on
what I think about this situation until I see how
many games.

Speaker 5 (26:48):
Yeah, I think it's hard to you know, it's hard
anyway to put a number on that. I think you
have to go with the real what are you seeing
with your eyes? Are what's being absorbed? What are the
where's the improvement, where's the growth? Where's the consistency of
some of the things that have been coached and some
of the things that have been identified as things that

(27:09):
need to happen to see that ascension kind of take place.
It gets even more difficult pa to put a number
on that, considering an entire.

Speaker 4 (27:18):
Year on the grass was lost.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
So now you're in a situation where you're trying to
you know, if you're drawing up the ideal way of
bringing along a quarterback, losing a year on the grasses
is not ideal. But at the same time, you know
the type of worker and the type of you know
off the field traits and the physical traits JJ has,
you want to continue to pour into those and try

(27:42):
to accelerate that wherever possible.

Speaker 4 (27:44):
And that's when ultimately, whether it's.

Speaker 5 (27:46):
Playing in a game where you didn't practice a whole
lot because of some circumstances or you you know, have
another injury and you lose time. All of that makes
it even more difficult to project when that number is,
when that time comes where you truly know exactly what
you have and until then, you've you've got to have
the opportunities to continue to give the runway for a

(28:07):
guy to show that growth. And we're still very early
on in that process. Maybe not along the timeline because
of some of the circumstances, but as far as actual
game action, JJ's going to start his third game, you know,
against the Detroit Lions coming up this Sunday.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
Tied in Ben Simms. You always like Ben Simms undrafted
from Baylor. I remember when he got here, and you
know you weren't super happy when he got plucked up
the practice squad, but other teams get to do that.

Speaker 1 (28:32):
But you always liked him, right, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (28:34):
Ben's another one of those guys that Brian Angelico or
Tenan's coach really became fond of, and you know, right
in the mix to maybe get drafted, and you don't.
You don't have a chance to draft him, so you
find a way any way possible to try to get
him to still become a Minnesota Viking, and as hard
of a decision as we've had roster wise, you know,

(28:56):
Ben being probably that fifty third fifty three point five
player that year, you're just hoping that you maybe get
him back to continue that ascension on the practice squad
and then ultimately with the rules now and the elevations,
you really do have more than just your fifty three
guys on the roster to go ahead and form a
game day forty eight or you know, depending on how
many guys you have up. So very much we're kind

(29:18):
of waiting for the day we could maybe get him
back here, and it did finally come and he arrived
here late last night. He's in here today getting back acclimated,
but very excited to have Ben Simms back back of board.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
Yep, quickly.

Speaker 3 (29:31):
Just two to close, one on the Lions, one on
Jail and Naylor Jaalen Naylor, despite his stats not being
anything huge and due to circumstances in my opinion, mostly
out of his control. I think, is he having a
sneaky really good season here?

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (29:46):
Yeah, I mean he's yeah, so like why.

Speaker 5 (29:48):
Yeah, he's you know, there's just so many things that
he can do pa that help our offense go. And
it doesn't always equal, you know, a bunch of catches
and a bunch of targets and things like that. Uh,
but when his number has been called, he's been huge.
He's had you know, you think back to the first
game that that big catch towards the end of the
half to get us into world record field goal range

(30:10):
for three points there that inevitably ended up being the
three points we needed to win the game, third down
conversions versus Cincinnati tight coverage, playing through contact. His ability
to function you know, in the box as a as
a receiver and eleven personnel and be physical and do
some do some jobs. And then ultimately both him and
Adam with where we've been at, you know, at the

(30:31):
tackle position for for a good chunk of our season,
using those guys, as you know, in many ways as
that second tight end type body so that you can
try to get some help on the edges while still
allow TJ. Hockinson to you know, occasionally run a route
free from having to do some dirty work at the
start of the snap.

Speaker 1 (30:49):
Right.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
It's all part of kind of that team philosophy, guys
doing things for the greater good of the of the group.
But at the same time, you want to make sure
those guys and especially Jalen get their opportunity to impact
the game because he's proven time and time again he
can do.

Speaker 3 (31:02):
That with With Ben Johnson gone to Chicago Lions or next,
do they still run tricks? I mean, do we still
see Pena sewel on jetsweeps?

Speaker 4 (31:10):
They still they still do a lot of those things.
J T. Barrett actually is in Chicago with Ben.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
I know j T had a lot to do with
their their trick, their trick play arsenal that they had
there with Ben in Detroit. But yeah, it's all still
there these players, It's part of their DNA. You gotta
be ready for double passes, reverses, you gotta be ready
for them to try to get unique ways to get
maybe Jamison Williams down the field as the explosive player

(31:37):
he is obviously we know Gibbs and Montgomery and then
amen Ra you know, as you know, as as as
consistent and impactful as a complete receiver as that are
there really is in the NFL. He can do it
inside outside, you know, man's own So they really don't
they have the type of weaponry that they they don't
need to dip into that that arsenal very often, but

(31:57):
they do clearly still have the capability, and with Jared
playing as high at a higher level as he is
right now, he's been wildly consistent and just continues to
propel that offense to be very very difficult to play against.

Speaker 4 (32:09):
Going to be a challenge for.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
Us and Dan Skipper with the jumbo package you just
came back lastly for your defense, I'm just going to
go numbers to have sixty one, ninety three, ninety seven,
forty three, fifty eight with fifty one, I'll just stop
it right there. Ye Van Ginkel if and or Wenny returns,
hopefully it is this weekend. With that group right there,

(32:32):
what moving forward through the final ten do you need
to see from Javon Hargrave.

Speaker 5 (32:38):
Yeah, I think the biggest thing is just the consistency
factor of the balance between technique fundamentals within the scheme required.
It's not just about individually winning your matchup and trying
to make a play. In many ways, our guys want
so badly to make that play that some times guys

(33:01):
are maybe straining outside maybe their initial responsibilities to maybe
make a play here there. It's all credited to the
deep down desire to try to do things to help
our team win. So that's an extreme positive and we've
just got to play. Our defense is at their best
in my opinion and really in Flows opinion, when we
have eleven guys all in unison, totally connected, playing as

(33:25):
one group, where the plays come to everybody within our defense.
As Pa we saw a year ago with the turnovers
that were forced the negative plays. What we've got to
do is maintain the discipline of that through each and
every snap and play with the physicality and the disruption
that has kind of been a hallmark of Flows defense
since he got here.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
We just needed a little bit more consistently.

Speaker 5 (33:47):
Obviously, getting Van van Ginkel back will be a huge
just because he is able to do so many jobs
within the defense that allows other guys to really be
in their comfort zone of and the things that they
were either brought here for or they've consistently shown throughout
their careers. So I think it's a lot of puzzle pieces,
but he's obviously a very big part of it, and

(34:09):
hope to have him back as soon as possible.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
Great seeing you, Yeah, thanks Pa, Thanks for the time
Kevin O'Connell, the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. That's
x's and o's into the Lions game back after this
before we.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
Go the fan in two minutes of junk, Chuck, want
to give you a shot to one bonus bucks in
the National Cash Contest. Head to cafan dot com, keywork,
Grand Keywear, Grand Caffan dot com, keywork Grand.

Speaker 1 (34:33):
All right, give it your nick.

Speaker 6 (34:36):
Listening to the interview, and I'm just thinking to myself,
I wonder just I mean, from week two on PA,
every single week, here's what we got with Carson.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
Who's the NFL's.

Speaker 6 (34:48):
Version of the ebug, the emergency third QB, yep, who's
gonna play?

Speaker 3 (34:54):
What's up with JJ's ankle? Wire head coaches compared to
Genghis Khan.

Speaker 4 (34:58):
Et cetera.

Speaker 6 (34:59):
And so I'm just curious, like, is he into this week?
I mean, it's the kiddies that creates a level of
stress all in its own.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
I'm so glad you said that, because that's like with
the page turning, what's on the next page? Wentz amputation,
just the whole thing with the conversation. Oh, by the way,
the Lions are next by the way.

Speaker 6 (35:19):
Yes, it's a place that has been a massive problem
for this organization to win games in.

Speaker 1 (35:25):
For what is it?

Speaker 6 (35:26):
I mean twenty twenty one maybe the last time we
won it or twenty twenty Oh, I guess the Lions
in at Ford Field?

Speaker 3 (35:34):
I mean we Wow, kJ Osborne walked off on him
in twenty two.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
That was at your home though.

Speaker 3 (35:41):
Yeah, geez, wait last year, No, I should your announcers
should have this top of the head. Feels like twenty
twenty two we swept them.

Speaker 4 (35:50):
Geez.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
How big of an issue with twenty twenty one was
was the cam Dancelar raw Amen Ross Saint Brown back
left of the end one first National Football League touchdown?

Speaker 4 (36:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (36:02):
So they the last time the Vikings won there it
was indeed twenty twenty.

Speaker 4 (36:05):
Though we've we've won the twenties.

Speaker 6 (36:07):
Last time we've lost four consecutive at Ford Field.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
So but that's what. But so the kiddies in the
mix all of that.

Speaker 6 (36:14):
But I'm just trying to think, like, is he is
he stressed about JJ take two? Is he confident in
JJ Take two? Or is there just an element again,
kiddy's on the horizon.

Speaker 3 (36:25):
You just saw all of his facial expressions when the
ven camera comes on me or both of us are
in it, you know. And and again nine to noon
is not the We looked into his eyes and he's
putting Van ginkel on five sacks in one game. But
we we see it weekly, man, because he's so open

(36:47):
and honest with us. He wears his emotions and his
feelings on his face. And you saw it a couple
of times today. It's you know, I thought, after the
fifteen minutes of chatting about Carson Wentz, that's half the bit. Yeah,
we're not even supposed to have thirty We're supposed to
have twenty two, but we always take thirty five until

(37:09):
we're to old.

Speaker 1 (37:09):
We can't. That's correct. We're KFA and raised. But nevertheless,
when I segued and I'm like.

Speaker 3 (37:15):
Well, what do you do now, I mean, do you
just go with the kids, Just go with the kids,
move forward with them. I thought that would get a smile. Yeah,
didn't get a smile. I'm like, so, yeah, so what's next?

Speaker 1 (37:27):
Yeah, Skelton in the field house. Hey, I remember, you know,
player coaches. That used to be a thing. Josh McCown there. Yeah,
God's cartoon character couldn't crack him.

Speaker 6 (37:36):
I just think and we've joked about it kind of
off air with some people as well. How you know,
whether it's travel, it was the dual international bit, Like
we were talking seven games, it's felt like a freaking season,
and I'm just curious, like the head coach's mentality into
this game, division rival, place you haven't won in nearly
half a decade, and it's just this goulash of confidence. Okay,

(38:01):
let's get JJ back out there. Indeed, we were rolling
with the kids. Do we want to have to just
roll with the kids? That's probably part of the conversation,
the combination of stress, maybe some relief because after this week,
let's get a good one out of number nine and
we don't have to have any controversial related conversation and
commentary and questions in the podium. Like I just I

(38:23):
just need some consistency and some stability in my life.

Speaker 1 (38:27):
And that's all he needs, That's all all of them want.

Speaker 6 (38:30):
It's just it's it's just a again, it's it's just
a bad gulash and you're it's only seven into Well,
that's the thing. And so now I'm trying to read
into when he said getting Van ginkelback will be well huge, Yes,
does that mean will as in ford Field on Sunday?

Speaker 1 (38:45):
Coach, I gotta believe it does.

Speaker 4 (38:47):
Watch.

Speaker 3 (38:47):
I mean a will It wasn't. It wasn't the if
we it was when we know we, it's not we.
It's not we might it was we will.

Speaker 6 (39:00):
Because think about this, So the questions he's dealing with
the optics of Carson on the field and you know,
digging into when exactly should certain other qbs have been
putting the you know Max in particular obviously Thursday night
he's dealt with that. Hey, Van Ginkel hasn't played in
a long time. He's not on ir what's up with that?

Speaker 4 (39:18):
Hey?

Speaker 1 (39:19):
The left tackle returns? What is it? Week three? He's
on pitch counts.

Speaker 6 (39:24):
Then he's a full speed ahead after the bye, but
then we pull him back to nine snaps on a
Thursday night.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
What's up with that? I mean?

Speaker 6 (39:30):
The goulash of emotion for this coach is incredible right now.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
That's Nordo.

Speaker 3 (39:35):
He produces nine to noon and I'm Paul Allen if
you if you missed that Kevin O'Connell conversation, you can
