You know, one being a father to being a coach?

really you know, that's what makes me who I am.
I can't do all this without being that.

Would you show me this photo? The kind of you
went viral because your family is so good looking? Have
you seen that?

I don't have anything to do with the the styling
or anything. I just show up and they put the
clothes on me, and yeah they still show.

Though when I see it, it's like, yo, damn, I dude,
look at him. And this one time we was what
was we at? We was in We was on a
cruise and it was all of us that all my
kids was younger. One of the guys looked at us
and was like, y'are the most the most beautiful family
got seen since we've been out here, kind of put
in perspectively.

I felt that you did good.

So you're in a season now, boy, this is a
season of your life.

Speaker 5 (01:34):
You got a new job, got a new job, reality show, yep, docuseries,
you know, thanks to you know, thanks to Kiaka Man,
we was able to document this whole season.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
It was fun too, like just to be vulnerable, be
in a position where like I never thought I would
be coaching, hosting team meetings and you know, trying to
guide players and helped them on a day to day basis.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
It's strenuous, but at the same time as what I
signed up for. I love it. I love it.

Yeah, you never coached before, right, never coach? Like not
one of your kids, nothing is you don't never coach. It.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
Just got the call out of the blue from a
good friend of mine, Aaron Ross. Know, you want to
coach in Norfolk Stateium. Like, bro, I got a good
thing going on at Fox, Like, why would I leave that?
But at some point in my life I did want
to coach college football. So it was something I was
looking at, you know, in a five to six year
time spend, dating back like five years ago, and it

just abruptly came out of nowhere and I was like,
let me just walk through this door to see what it.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
That's so interesting that I feel like, because you just
never know life, man, the opportunity to do something bread.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
And I'm like me, they won't me, Like, yo, you
can do it. So they gave me a voter confidence
KIAFA gave me a voter com for this, even though
you know, I had an opportunity to go to Sacramento
State too at the time, which was a better situation.
I'm just being candid. There was more money all across

(03:11):
the board. It was more n I it was. It
wasn't gonna be as much of a struggle, and so
I chose to go to Norfolk State. I knew the
position that they was in, and you know, it was
more more about leaving them in a better situation than
where I found them, and so I took on that chance.
Yeah yeah, I mean family, but that wasn't you know,

(03:32):
I won't lie. That was part of the decision. That
was part of the reason why I chose, but I
could have went to Sacramento State and just hit everything
right there for.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Me, weather at nicer way nice and.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Money don't buy happiness.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Say that does it mean? Like so if you could
be you could be a great football player, But does
that mean you'll be a great coach?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Like it doesn't not at all?

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah, So how is that? What's that transition?

Speaker 4 (03:56):
How do you It's a different translation. You go from
everything you know that you can execute and you can
do that, don't mean that the player that you're trying
to coach understand it the way you do. And so
just put myself in my quarterback's position, for example, There's
plenty of times I watch film and see the way
I explain things to him. He don't see it that way.

(04:19):
You know, he got to interpreted in his own ways.
So you know, you really gotta just like beat the
door down for them to just like, yo, this is
how it's gotta be. And it don't happen overnight. It's like,
you know, maybe like a year or two to where
they start to understand like this is what it takes
to play at another level and go to that next level.

(04:41):
And I just didn't have enough time with the group
that just left, but the group this year will be
a lot better.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Does it make you have like a newfound kind of
respect for the coaches that you've.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Had, Oh, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
Like, man, the crazy part is when I think about
all my coaches, from Jim Moore to Dan Reeves to
Andy Reid, and the times that they was telling me
things that I needed to do, things that I needed
to hear that I didn't want to hear. I found
myself telling my pleasures the same thing. It's being really
frustrated with him, like, yo, bro, then I tell you

to do it like this.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Then I say it's got to go like that.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
And man, I got so much respect for them now
because Jim Moore told me when I called him and
I took the job at and I asked him for
some advice, he was like, look, just know this. They
gonna hang on to every word that you say the
same way. And I'm like, damn, the same way I
used to look at you when every word used to
come out to your mind. I mean, when I'm talking
to my kids, their eyes be so big and looking
at me it's almost intimidating. I'm like, damn, Like do

you believe me or or not. But I've grown to
love the position that I'm in, and like this year,
I just couldn't wait to get back and get started
and try to do it all over again, to just
keep getting better and better.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
That's what's most important.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
How do you rate yourself your first year? Like, how
do you think first.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
The first year? That's a good question. On the scale
of one to ten, I'm gonna give myself like a six, okay,
Because in anything that you want to be great at,
you got to look back and see the flaws and
the things that didn't go well and the things that
you could have done better. And maybe it was spending
an extra hour with the quarterbacks and spending more time
with the coaches. If you want to be average, you

know you'll do average things. If you want to be great,
you got to spend extra time. That's what I learned,
and that's what I did when I when I played
and I was at the peak of my game, I
spent more time trying to understand my opponent, and just
so on Saturdays or on Sundays, the game was easy
and I got to do it again, and.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Just in a different realm. But I didn't know how
to do that. Now I know how to do it.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
As a coach as yeah, you know how to do
it as a player, I.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Know how to do it. I had to learn and
be very observing. It was hard, though.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
I mean I probably shared tears maybe like four times coaching.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Nobody ever seen it though, in.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
One year in this one Yeah, four times four times
of what frustration?

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Well yeah, frustration?

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Uh, you know, not being in control, not having control
understanding that look once of them. Once your boys go
out there, it's on them and you can't it's nothing.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
You could do about.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
It's like watching your kid go outside and if it's
an altercation, you know whether he handled it correctly or not,
like you rooting for him, but if he lose the battle,
you're gonna be like, damn, I ain't give him enough.
I ain't tell him enough, I ain't teaching him enough.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
You put it on them.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
I felt like, yeah, a lot of what they was
going through is because of me. So do you tell
them that I told him on occasion?

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, But you probably a great coach. They love me
that much.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
They fall all the way to the end.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
The one thing about my team, they never quit and
you'll see just on the on the show in the
series that you know they was very ambitious. They don't
They're gonna go on to do great things in life.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
That's beautiful.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
And we got a couple that's probably gonna play in
the NFL, and so it's some special talent.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
The story. What do we see on the on the
on the show, like what is it the whole?

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Is it? You?

Right at the beginning?

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Do we say things the players? It's the coaches, it's
team meetings. Is coaches meeting You don't see the tears?

Speaker 3 (08:22):

Probably a couple of probably a couple of times, because
you know, I mean, it was just like being away
from family. Emotions was tied into everything. Some days I
was missing them and going through tough times, like real
things that we go through in life, and it's like
it's out of my control. And then when I it's
like I need somebody to talk to. Sometimes even if
I'm looking into a camera and talking into a camera,

I can let Sometimes you can't.

Control it, just start crying. You don't know why you crying.
I don't know.

That's amazing, but it.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Made me stronger every every time I did it.

Yeah, it sounds good. I'm too. Then you sold it
to me.

I'm locked there.

I seen like two episodes and I was like, damn,
I want to see more, and they wouldn't let me.

I was so good. It's a good time.

so I'm excited about it, man, just go check it out.
It's an eight part series and it's not just about
me as a coach. It's about family. It's about my
players and the things that they was they went through
throughout the season, their family lives, their struggles, their successes,

More and also point guys, it's a beautiful family. They're
gonna look good on television.

And then the production is amazing, Like yeah, I don't
I don't pay attention to that part. I just kind
of lived through it, and you know, you see camera
here and the camera.

Over there, but you don't know what they're capturing.

Going on, back up, sometimes get with a ball. But yeah,
I mean the finished product was amazing.

And then when do you go back. When does this
like when is the next when you go back to ringball?

For us?

Start March first, and so I'm just I'm just excited
to be back, Angie, like you know, after you know,
the first year of learning, and I say that, it's
like I know what to do, and I just September
can't come fast enough. But I'm gonna take every day

and use it correctly and take everything in stride. Probably
go back and watch last year's probably about ten fifteen times,
just so I'll make the same mistakes twice because then
it'll be a mistake. And so just to make sure
that my players get the best chance to succeed.

I'm so tuned in. I have to ask the Super
bowls coming, it's a very big deal. Bad bunnies coming,

Man? You know, nobody expected the Seahawks to make it,
nor did we expect New England to make it.

Speaker 1 (11:16):

So we got new blood young quarterbacks and and you know,
obviously a veteran quarterback in Sam Donald. Two really good coaches,
two really good teams, So I expect if you want
my prediction. Even though I got mad respect for Mike
Raybourn and New England Patriots, I just my iron seattle

on what they've been able to do and accomplished this year.
It's been amazing defense, absolutely understand that. But what great
defense and the young hungry quarterback win it every time.
But I spent some time out there. There'll be a
lot of good festivities. It's gonna be a great week.

I don't know when this happened. What I saw the
clips talking about you is that from the Football the
Hall of Fame event. I saw a clip on line.

We all take pride in where we come from. We're
all great in our own right and we all support

It's all like we all end up in the same places,
and so it's all love everywhere we go.

from there? I mean, you're not from there, but it's.

Grew up like thirty minutes away from there and North.
I didn't spend a lot of time in Norfolk. I
never saw state campus Norfolk.

didn't like my name, and he looked at me and

that people like it. So now like when I hear
people say my full name Michael, I really hear that. Really,
