Speaker 1 (00:08):
NFL quarterback.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Let your full time pro bowler Michael big is in
the building today and also now like a coach, television star,
family man, husband, father.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
You got a lot of titles, my guys. What's your
favorite title?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
You know, one being a father to being a coach?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Really you better say husband because your wife is in
the room.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
And then oh, I mean yeah, absolutely a husband. That's
really you know, that's what makes me who I am.
I can't do all this without being that.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yeah, it's so funny.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
There's a there.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Would you show me this photo? The kind of you
went viral because your family is so good looking? Have
you seen that?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah? Not me with them? You know, they make me
look good.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
You put it on them. It's a gorgeous fan.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
I don't have anything to do with the the styling
or anything. I just show up and they put the
clothes on me, and yeah they still show.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
But you got to see a picture like that and
be like, yeah, I got a good look.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Though when I see it, it's like, yo, damn, I dude,
look at him. And this one time we was what
was we at? We was in We was on a
cruise and it was all of us that all my
kids was younger. One of the guys looked at us
and was like, y'are the most the most beautiful family
got seen since we've been out here, kind of put
in perspectively.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
I felt that you did good.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
So you're in a season now, boy, this is a
season of your life.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
You got a new job, got a new job, reality show, yep, docuseries,
you know, thanks to you know, thanks to Kiaka Man,
we was able to document this whole season.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
It was fun too, like just to be vulnerable, be
in a position where like I never thought I would
be coaching, hosting team meetings and you know, trying to
guide players and helped them on a day to day basis.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
It's strenuous, but at the same time as what I
signed up for. I love it. I love it.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah, you never coached before, right, never coach? Like not
one of your kids, nothing is you don't never coach. It.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Just got the call out of the blue from a
good friend of mine, Aaron Ross. Know, you want to
coach in Norfolk Stateium. Like, bro, I got a good
thing going on at Fox, Like, why would I leave that?
But at some point in my life I did want
to coach college football. So it was something I was
looking at, you know, in a five to six year
time spend, dating back like five years ago, and it
(02:38):
just abruptly came out of nowhere and I was like,
let me just walk through this door to see what it.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
That's so interesting that I feel like, because you just
never know life, man, the opportunity to do something bread.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
And I'm like me, they won't me, Like, yo, you
can do it. So they gave me a voter confidence
KIAFA gave me a voter com for this, even though
you know, I had an opportunity to go to Sacramento
State too at the time, which was a better situation.
I'm just being candid. There was more money all across
(03:11):
the board. It was more n I it was. It
wasn't gonna be as much of a struggle, and so
I chose to go to Norfolk State. I knew the
position that they was in, and you know, it was
more more about leaving them in a better situation than
where I found them, and so I took on that chance.
Yeah yeah, I mean family, but that wasn't you know,
(03:32):
I won't lie. That was part of the decision. That
was part of the reason why I chose, but I
could have went to Sacramento State and just hit everything
right there for.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Me, weather at nicer way nice and.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Money don't buy happiness.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Say that does it mean? Like so if you could
be you could be a great football player, But does
that mean you'll be a great coach?
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Like it doesn't not at all?
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah, So how is that? What's that transition?
Speaker 4 (03:56):
How do you It's a different translation. You go from
everything you know that you can execute and you can
do that, don't mean that the player that you're trying
to coach understand it the way you do. And so
just put myself in my quarterback's position, for example, There's
plenty of times I watch film and see the way
I explain things to him. He don't see it that way.
(04:19):
You know, he got to interpreted in his own ways.
So you know, you really gotta just like beat the
door down for them to just like, yo, this is
how it's gotta be. And it don't happen overnight. It's like,
you know, maybe like a year or two to where
they start to understand like this is what it takes
to play at another level and go to that next level.
(04:41):
And I just didn't have enough time with the group
that just left, but the group this year will be
a lot better.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Does it make you have like a newfound kind of
respect for the coaches that you've.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Had, Oh, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Like, man, the crazy part is when I think about
all my coaches, from Jim Moore to Dan Reeves to
Andy Reid, and the times that they was telling me
things that I needed to do, things that I needed
to hear that I didn't want to hear. I found
myself telling my pleasures the same thing. It's being really
frustrated with him, like, yo, bro, then I tell you
(05:12):
to do it like this.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Then I say it's got to go like that.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
And man, I got so much respect for them now
because Jim Moore told me when I called him and
I took the job at and I asked him for
some advice, he was like, look, just know this. They
gonna hang on to every word that you say the
same way. And I'm like, damn, the same way I
used to look at you when every word used to
come out to your mind. I mean, when I'm talking
to my kids, their eyes be so big and looking
at me it's almost intimidating. I'm like, damn, Like do
(05:38):
you believe me or or not. But I've grown to
love the position that I'm in, and like this year,
I just couldn't wait to get back and get started
and try to do it all over again, to just
keep getting better and better.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
That's what's most important.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
How do you rate yourself your first year? Like, how
do you think first.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
The first year? That's a good question. On the scale
of one to ten, I'm gonna give myself like a six, okay,
Because in anything that you want to be great at,
you got to look back and see the flaws and
the things that didn't go well and the things that
you could have done better. And maybe it was spending
an extra hour with the quarterbacks and spending more time
with the coaches. If you want to be average, you
(06:19):
know you'll do average things. If you want to be great,
you got to spend extra time. That's what I learned,
and that's what I did when I when I played
and I was at the peak of my game, I
spent more time trying to understand my opponent, and just
so on Saturdays or on Sundays, the game was easy
and I got to do it again, and.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Just in a different realm. But I didn't know how
to do that. Now I know how to do it.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
As a coach as yeah, you know how to do
it as a player, I.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Know how to do it. I had to learn and
be very observing. It was hard, though.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
I mean I probably shared tears maybe like four times coaching.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Nobody ever seen it though, in.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
One year in this one Yeah, four times four times
of what frustration?
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Well yeah, frustration?
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Uh, you know, not being in control, not having control
understanding that look once of them. Once your boys go
out there, it's on them and you can't it's nothing.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
You could do about.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
It's like watching your kid go outside and if it's
an altercation, you know whether he handled it correctly or not,
like you rooting for him, but if he lose the battle,
you're gonna be like, damn, I ain't give him enough.
I ain't tell him enough, I ain't teaching him enough.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
You put it on them.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
I felt like, yeah, a lot of what they was
going through is because of me. So do you tell
them that I told him on occasion?
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, But you probably a great coach. They love me
that much.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
They fall all the way to the end.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
The one thing about my team, they never quit and
you'll see just on the on the show in the
series that you know they was very ambitious. They don't
They're gonna go on to do great things in life.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
That's beautiful.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
And we got a couple that's probably gonna play in
the NFL, and so it's some special talent.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
The story. What do we see on the on the
on the show, like what is it the whole?
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Is it? You?
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Right at the beginning?
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Do we say things the players? It's the coaches, it's
team meetings. Is coaches meeting You don't see the tears?
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Do we be.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Television?
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Probably a couple of probably a couple of times, because
you know, I mean, it was just like being away
from family. Emotions was tied into everything. Some days I
was missing them and going through tough times, like real
things that we go through in life, and it's like
it's out of my control. And then when I it's
like I need somebody to talk to. Sometimes even if
I'm looking into a camera and talking into a camera,
(08:48):
I can let Sometimes you can't.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Control it, just start crying. You don't know why you crying.
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
That's amazing, but it.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Made me stronger every every time I did it.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Yeah, it sounds good. I'm too. Then you sold it
to me.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
I'm locked there.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
I seen like two episodes and I was like, damn,
I want to see more, and they wouldn't let me.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I was so good. It's a good time.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
So wait, when do we see it? How do we
see it?
Speaker 4 (09:13):
February fourth as on BT next week, next week? And
so I'm excited about it, man, just go check it out.
It's an eight part series and it's not just about
me as a coach. It's about family. It's about my
players and the things that they was they went through
throughout the season, their family lives, their struggles, their successes,
(09:35):
and I was.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
More and also point guys, it's a beautiful family. They're
gonna look good on television.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
And then the production is amazing, Like yeah, I don't
I don't pay attention to that part. I just kind
of lived through it, and you know, you see camera
here and the camera.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Over there, but you don't know what they're capturing.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Going on, back up, sometimes get with a ball. But yeah,
I mean the finished product was amazing.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
That's do so b et February fourth, BT February February fourth.
And then when do you go back. When does this
like when is the next when you go back to ringball?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
For us?
Speaker 4 (10:11):
Start March first, and so I'm just I'm just excited
to be back, Angie, like you know, after you know,
the first year of learning, and I say that, it's
like I know what to do, and I just September
can't come fast enough. But I'm gonna take every day
(10:32):
and use it correctly and take everything in stride. Probably
go back and watch last year's probably about ten fifteen times,
just so I'll make the same mistakes twice because then
it'll be a mistake. And so just to make sure
that my players get the best chance to succeed.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
If not, it's on me, tuned in, locked in.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
I'm so tuned in. I have to ask the Super
bowls coming, it's a very big deal. Bad bunnies coming,
oh no doubt, about to go down. What do you think? What?
What what do we What's what's happening in Super Bowl
this year? What do you predict?
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Man? You know, nobody expected the Seahawks to make it,
nor did we expect New England to make it.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
So we're here now, and.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
So we got new blood young quarterbacks and and you know,
obviously a veteran quarterback in Sam Donald. Two really good coaches,
two really good teams, So I expect if you want
my prediction. Even though I got mad respect for Mike
Raybourn and New England Patriots, I just my iron seattle
(11:38):
on what they've been able to do and accomplished this year.
It's been amazing defense, absolutely understand that. But what great
defense and the young hungry quarterback win it every time.
But I spent some time out there. There'll be a
lot of good festivities. It's gonna be a great week.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I don't know when this happened. What I saw the
clips talking about you is that from the Football the
Hall of Fame event. I saw a clip on line.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
It was just random, just during the season.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
The clips talking about how much you mean to v
A and what how.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Much we all mean the VA from the clips to
AI to Gerard Mayo too, I mean Cam Chancellor, Tyrod Taylor.
We all take pride in where we come from. We're
all great in our own right and we all support
each other. And that's what I was gonna say.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Do you have like a little squad? Is there like
a VA ma chat?
Speaker 4 (12:33):
It's all like we all end up in the same places,
and so it's all love everywhere we go.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Yeah, and you know, it's I don't know why in
my whole life Norfolk. It's really hard for me to say.
Have you heard anybody ever say this Norfolk? Because you're
from there? I mean, you're not from there, but it's.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Grew up like thirty minutes away from there and North.
I didn't spend a lot of time in Norfolk. I
never saw state campus Norfolk.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
It's like Norfolk. How do you say it? Because Norfolk?
Because you know in New York is we say, oh,
there's like a lot so I want to say Norfolk,
but it's not for yes, it's really Please don't get mad.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
At me if you're from Normalk.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
It's just because they say, you know, I don't.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Want to nobody. I don't want to say it right when,
you know, when we're about to do the interview today,
and I saw one of the intros and it had
it in the it's you know, it had head coach
of the history of the Norfolk.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Norfolk, how you pronounced childie?
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Norfolk said Norfolk? I said Norfolk?
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Norfolk? You say it like folk, like grown folk.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
So Norfolk say seven cities, but.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
It sounds weird when I say Norfolk. Yeah, it's really
a problem. It's really a problem, and I want to
be disrespectful. Please don't be mad at me. It's just
a real problem I have. I was hoping to have
some clarity today. You gave it to Yeah, I mean,
see you say it one more.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Time, Norfolk, Norfolk had of time? How is that?
Speaker 1 (14:06):
You see how hard I have to work at it though,
it's like for me to say it naturally like fixed here.
You know, it's the coach in Norfolk.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
And you gotta be right.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
I gotta get it right. I'm practice that.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
I don't want no problems with nobody from Virginia. I
love Virginia, especially Norfolk Virginia. I'm gonna get it right.
You're gonna be my inspiration to get.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
This route, especially when we start winning, especially when wins.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
For sure, that is that the plan this year?
Speaker 3 (14:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Yeah, you know, anything you do in life, you gotta
strive to win. So yeah, that's that's gonna be the
cool part about this season.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Man. Just so just to turn around.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Yeah, you wear it on YouTube, right like.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Yeah, yeah, you don't go nowhere what's.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Hard to wear a loss as a player or a
loss as a coach.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
As a coach really because you got so many responsibilities,
but as a player, like it's more personal, so it's like, damn,
I ain't do my job.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
You can't blame other people.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
As a coach is like yo, you pointed at your
coaches and players like yo, everybody.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Collective, everybody could get it. Yeah, but it's harder as
a coach coach.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
As for the long haul, Man, we'll be around for
a while you are, and it's really fun to be
around a group of coaches and players who really care about,
you know, just being inspiration for the next generation and
also putting out good product.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
So we just take it all in. Strap, I have.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
I have high hopes for you as thank you in
your coaching. I am and I'll be tuned into be
et anything else we miss today, anything else we got to.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Get to check us out.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
Man February fourth Man DOCU series Coach VIC Experience.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
All right, we do have some We have a little
thing that we do with play a little game on
the show VIC called check it or let It Slide. Okay,
this is like if the situation happens in life, do
you check that person or do you let it slide?
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Okay, cool, because oh I don't know.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
You know, every time I'm around you always seem super chill.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
But I'm a nice guy.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
But yeah, a nice guy is super chill.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
Let me see it all depends depends on what's going on.
I got I got barriers and boundaries too.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Heard that, all right?
Speaker 6 (16:25):
You go first, we're gonna check the temperature. I check
it or let it slide. A guest comes to your
house for the first time and they welcome themselves to
your fridge.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Check it.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
You didn't even think about it.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
You're going, come on, b yeah, don't go on my fridge.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
I'm the opposite. People come to my house because I
don't want to have to host, Like I don't. I
don't want to have to like be running around all day.
I want to enjoy it. So I'd be like, listen,
please just go. You're looking for times.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Going, yeah, but let me lead that you want to
you want to?
Speaker 4 (17:02):
I mean, if you put some sodas in there, you
put some you still got to ask if you can
do that too.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
If not, just put them on the counter.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
You got boundaries. You got boundaries all right, So we're
checking that, check it and let it slide. Someone steps
on a fresh pair of your sneakers and scuffs them.
Do you check it or do you let us slide?
Speaker 3 (17:21):
You let it slide?
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Too much to happen over guys stepping on shoes at
a lot of tragic moments, shoes stepped on.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
It's worth it's back in the day.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
And you probably have so many pairs of sneakers, all
air Force ones? Do you really how many? How many
pairs of Air Force ones do you have?
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Forty right now?
Speaker 1 (17:44):
Thirty or forty fresh pair? Just fresh and red.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
I got some j's and dunks, and but your air
Force guy sprinkled in there a couple pair of new
Balance what else?
Speaker 3 (17:57):
A six? Yeah? But but yes was on the air
Force one driven forty Yeah?
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Yeah, No, I get it, all right, you go.
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Your friend tells you they're five minutes away, but pulls
up thirty minutes later.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
I'm checking that he's serious.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
He's a plenty likes because.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
People I do that to people, and I feel so
bad in the moment you do it. So I'm like,
and I expect them to check me, Like, yo, bro,
I don't do that and I'll be like, yo, you're right.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
You got that my.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
Dad, So you'll do that, But then you have the
nerve to check.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Don't do that to me. I'm because I'm gonna be hot. Real.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
You're at a family gathering, VIC and the potato salad
is trash? Do you check me?
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Check that? Because I like potato salad.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
I like potato salad, especially when you're eating it with
the right you know what I'm saying, We got the
right combination with it, like you put a little salt
in it.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Yeah it's watery or something like. No good.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
Now, if you're making that, you gotta you gotta know
what you're doing.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Somebody's getting checked.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Yeah, somebody can CHECKEDYO. This's nasty. You can say that
about Yeah, you can do you can do that.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
You give your child your credit card and they go
beyond the spending limit you gave them.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Mm hmm, I'm gonna let it slide. They do that
all the time.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
My daughters got my credit card, a couple of them.
I don't even know how to address them either. That's
the sad part. Like you spent too much, I'm gonna
get some pushback. I don't even know how to address it.
That's sad.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
I thought I had boundaries. What you don't know, don't.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
That's really funny.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
I'm gonna work on that, all right. Let's make it
stop spending.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
What if it was one of your what if it
was one of your players?
Speaker 4 (20:03):
Oh, I'm checking that. He's one of my sons too.
I probably checked that too. You spend it a little
too much. Hey, what you're doing that? You got going on?
Speaker 1 (20:11):
So it's the girl. You have a problem, your mush?
Speaker 5 (20:13):
Yeah, my girls, Yeah, girls, your mush.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
You walk into a restaurant with your let's say family,
someone is cold or rude or dismissive, and then switches
their tone when they realize who you are.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Do you check that that slide?
Speaker 4 (20:34):
Because I know where it can go, and I know,
in my position and in life, I gotta protect what's mine.
But if you push that button, ain't gonna.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Be coach victims, coach is coming off, Mike, It's gonna
be bruh, Hey, bruh, bruh. Play with me, bro.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
I feel like I I love you. I feel like
even when I was asking the question, it was it
was invoking some feelings. Something was happening.
Speaker 4 (21:06):

was like, go make a name for yourself, making sure
that people like it. So now like when I hear
people say my full name Michael, I really hear that. Really,
