Seven three is our time as wecheck in. As we check in with
our sister station WIS and in Milwaukee, Dan, Welcome to the show.
I'm really curious Milwaukee has done astellar job of hosting the Republican National Convention
so far, and I'm just kindof curious how much pressure y'all felt after
the assassination temp on President Trump toreally step it up and to make sure
(00:23):
that nothing bad happened in Milwaukee.Oh my gosh, you have no idea
what the pressure was like. Infact, I was actually talking to a
couple of members of Wisconsin's Republican delegationand guys, I'm going to just begin
I'm a little horse right now.You can imagine I have been working and
doing about one hundred interviews a day. But I was talking to a member
(00:46):
of Wisconsin's delegation and he said exactlythat. On Sunday, we were just
kind of texting about the events ofthe previous day and he said, man,
oh man, I hope security isgoing to be all right. I
hope that we're still able to puton a party. And frankly, with
the exception of one guy who hada concealed weapon and approached the secure perimeter,
(01:07):
but was very very quickly arrested. There's been nothing that would suggest that
anybody feels unsafe, and frankly, the atmosphere down here has been one of
jubilation of celebration. Of course, the events and Saturday are still top of
mind, but that really hasn't stoppedthe party. Yeah. I was noticing
last night that I've been watching, you know, the televised coverage of it
(01:30):
all. It is a happy conventionand it was like the last thing that
I expected. I didn't expect peopleto be so happy. No, because
two days ago, three days ago, now you very nearly. I mean,
I've been saying it came within twoto three millimeters of President Trump being
shot and killed. You did havea man, unfortunately, who was killed
(01:55):
by the sniper. Two people remainin critical condition in Pennsylvania. But I
think it's so celebratory because there issuch deep abiding faith in sort of a
divine intervention here, and there's abit of a resolve mixed in with that
joy that it's time to finish thejob, to get President Trump elected and
(02:19):
to make sure that this miracle issort of a springboard for doing the serious
job of, in the president's words, making America great again. There is
no tighter battleground state than Wisconsin, and I'm just kind of wondering, between
having the convention there and the assassinationattempt, how does that seem to be
affecting the voters in Wisconsin? Canyou tell? Not? Right now?
(02:42):
I mean, Wisconsin essentially comes downto two cities. You guys have essentially
a big three, right Houston,Dallas, Austin that are pretty much the
largest vote drivers. But because they'resuch a big state, all of the
Republican areas just are able to overwhelmthose three big Democrats centers of turning out
the vote. Here in Wisconsin,we're a population of about five point eight
(03:05):
million people, and the overwhelming majorityof those live in two major Democratic areas,
Milwaukee and our capital city of Madison. It always depends on what the
voter turnout looks like in Milwaukee andMadison. If those two cities in their
metro areas can overwhelm the rest ofa very republican state. Our legislature is
(03:28):
overwhelmingly Republican, then Democrats win statewide. If not Republicans win. I think
what you saw last night the messageof unity. Trump's former rivals Nikki Haley,
Ron DeSantis, Marco Rubio, evenhis vice presidential running mate JD.
Vance all were very sharp critics ofhim, but all are coming over to
(03:52):
support him and to show this messageof unity. Democrats, on the other
hand, are not unified. They'retalking about open for the past three weeks
now, replacing President Biden on theticket. That tends to affect turnout if
I had to guess right now.The shooting on Saturday, as I said,
steals the resolve of Republicans. They'reall going to turn out, while
(04:15):
while Democrats aren't just disunified there youknow, it's not at all excited about
this election, and I think alot of them believe it's already over.
That translates into a big turnout advantage, and in Wisconsin that is one hundred
percent the key. Okay, that'sgoing to be interesting to watch. Dan,
thanks for joining us. We suredo appreciate it. Dan O'Donnell from
