know the state owned a ranch in Star County, but
I know that now. Texas Land Commissioner Don Buckingham joins us.
Good morning, Commissioner, Welcome to Houston's Morning News. How did
you happen to acquire a ranch in Star County?
Speaker 5 (01:46):
Well, good morning to you and all of your listeners.
Thank you for having me on. We actually steward thirteen
million acres across the great state of Texas, so this
is something that we do all day long, every day.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Well, as I recall, though, with this particular ranch, the
ranch owner that you bought it from wasn't being very
cooperative as far as building a Texas border wall. So
I assume that the reason why the state bought the
ranch is so that they could eventually put a border
wall there.
Speaker 6 (02:12):
You're exactly right.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
We were approached right after I was sworn in almost
two years ago by the Texas Facilities Commission, which of
course is the entity that's building the state wall standing
in the gap when the federal government has been abdicating
their constitutional duty to defend our border.
Speaker 6 (02:26):
For the last four years.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
So they asked, and they said, hey, we've got this
problematic landowner.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
She's not allowing law enforcement on the property.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Of course, once the bad guys know they have a
law enforcement free zone, more bad things happen on that property.
And she was also refusing to let the wall be built.
And they said, hey, don can you help us. We'd
like to get this wall up. We want to get moving,
we want to get this obstacle out of the way.
Speaker 6 (02:51):
And I said absolutely. So we struck her a fair
deal for her ranch.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
Purchased it, closed a couple of weeks ago, actually within
twenty four hours, had the right of way for the
wall cleared, design sealed and delivered with the Facilities Commission,
and construction of.
Speaker 6 (03:05):
The wall is undergoing right now well.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
And there's evidently maybe going to be more than a
wall there, because you've altered it up to the federal government,
to the Trump administration when the mass deportations begin, how
would that work?
Speaker 6 (03:18):
Well, we were just super excited.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
I was sitting around with my team as always, we are,
you know, doing everything we can to get complete operational
control of the border. In fact, earlier about a year ago,
we declared three islands in the Rio Grand granting as Texas,
granting law enforcement access to them for the first time.
And then of course, through Operation Flat Top with the
Texas Military Department in DPS, we got them cleared, got

the wire up, and got complete operational control of those
So every day, all day, we're looking at how we
can make our communities safer and get our border secure.

And so we thought, well, hey, we have a really
good deal. We have fourteen hundred acres.

I actually happened to own another ranch just a couple
of miles away, so we have four thousand acres total
in Star And we said, well, let's just ask the
Trump team if they need a deportation center to get
these violent criminals who've been harming our sons and daughters
out of our country.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
You know, I would have asked you how the community
is reacting to the news. But based on the election,
I don't think I probably have to start going to
start voted Republican for the first time, what one hundred
and fifty years?
Speaker 5 (04:22):
Yes, isn't that exciting and such a clear message that
people are tired of the lawlessness.
Speaker 6 (04:29):
You know, our border communities are beautiful.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
The hospitality down along the border, especially in the valley,
is just amazing. These lovely people have had their rights
and fringe. They felt like the federal government has forgotten them,
they don't care about them, and we're losing too many
of our children. I mean Lake and Riley, Jocelyn Nungary.
I mean, there is no excuse that these criminals have
been allowed to harm our sons and daughters over and

over repetitive, heinous crimes. We want these violent criminals out
of our country as fast as we can get them out.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
President Trump has obviously not been sworn in yet, but
I assume the offer has been made to his administration.
Have you heard anything back on it now as to
whether or not they're going to take you up on
the offer.
Speaker 7 (05:10):
Well, they've only had the letter for a little over
twenty four hours, and I know they're a little busy,
so we hear through the back channels that they are
definitely giving it every consideration. We'll, of course wait to
hear from them, but our message is clear. We are
here to be a good partner. We're here to defend
the Texas we know and love.

And as a positive side note, you know, we'll probably
work out a little lease with the federal government and
that raises money for the school children of Texas, which
is also one of our fundamental duties.
