Speaker 1 (00:01):
You know, we can. We can tell you all we
want about, you know, the Same Jude experience and how
they are different from virtually any other hospital in the
entire country. But I think nobody can talk about that
better than somebody who actually has had the Saint Jude experience.
His name is Emmanuel. He's a patient from Houston. You're
a former patient though, right, Emmanuel.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yes, still I'm a form patient, but I'm still able
to go up there and continue to make visits of
need it.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Now, as I recall your story, you had cancer behind
one of your eyes. Is that correct? Yes, sir, my left. Okay,
what what what was the prognosis when you when you
first found out that you had this form of cancer.
Tell me about, you know, going from just visiting with
doctors here in Houston and ending up at Saint Jude's.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, well it was an interesting process. You know. I
was four years old and my mom just you know,
had to feel that something was wrong. So with that
finish to the odd doctor and they said, i'maginy glasses
and but that wasn't good enough for her. She still
felt like something was wrong, so against to me back
to the same doctor and again they said maginy glasses
(01:11):
and then again that feeling still was heavy in her heart.
So with another trip to the doctor, the same one
that their trip, he told us that I had a
tumor and capsuled the inside of my eye and that's
when everything started m.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
And that's how you ended up in saying true Children's
Research Hospital. So so how long were you there and what?
Speaker 2 (01:31):
What? What?
Speaker 1 (01:32):
What was that process?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Like?
Speaker 1 (01:33):
I mean when you're what four or five years old
at the time, So what do you remember about that?
Being so young?
Speaker 2 (01:39):
You know, being four years old is a It was
definitely interesting to go through something like that because you know,
you don't really grasp the concept of cancer and your
life been on the line the way it is. But
you know, for me, I know it was definitely hard
on my parents, but for me, it wasn't I was
going to the hospital because I was sick. For me
(02:00):
was I was around a lot of people who cared
about me and who just wanted to help me get better,
and been at Saint Jude was exactly that.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
You know, That's the thing I think I hear more
than anything else from people who've had the same Jude experiences.
What an overall positive experience it is what a generally happy,
positive place. It is that it doesn't really feel like
a hospital, feels more like a big home.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, exactly, That's exactly how I would describe it. It
was it wasn't like I was in a place where
my life was in danger. I was in a place
where people knew me by name and they were happy
to see me.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Now, I know that, you know, getting cancer treatment can
be an expensive process, but that's the other thing that's
so different about Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. Your parents
never got a bill. They never had to pay for meals,
they never had to pay for a place to stay,
they never had to pay for your treatment. If you
have any idea in real dollars what that would have cost,
if that had come out of your parents' pocket.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Well, I mean, glory to God. I've been able to
experience the process firsthand. I've been able to go to
fundraisers and experience people donating, and you know, they have
it on the screen where one one single treatment could
cost anymal from five to ten thousand dollars, and seeing
(03:22):
people willingly and joyfully giving them money to save that
child for just one treatment when most cheers need multiple
you know, seeing that is just incredible. I had no
idea how much how much it could cost needs from
the surgery, to the hotels, the flight, the anesthetic eyes
(03:43):
that I've needed. I have no clue, but I just
know there's a lot of people behind it that dorfually
give them money.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Emmanuel, thank you for sharing. How old are you now,
by the way, before I let you go.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
I'm twenty years old, sixteen years cancer free.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Well, thank God for that, and thanks for joining us
this morning. Pleasure to talk to appreciate.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
