Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's the giving season and we're trying to give as
much as we can to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Five p. Fifty two is her time here on Houston's
Morning News, our next guest, former patient. I actually talked
to her on my afternoon show on KPRC yesterday, So
this is gonna be deja vous all over again for you. Diana.
Good morning, Heye, welcome back. I'm trying to think if

(00:22):
there's anything I didn't ask you yesterday. Now I don't
think there is. But we learned yesterday that this beautiful
young woman just graduated from college. She's a communications major,
so she's gunning for my job here in a couple
of years. And I told her that's fine, if you
wait two or three years, I'll let you have my job,
or you at least can go for my job. But
one of the things that kind of struck me about
what you said yesterday is we went through the timeline

(00:44):
of your leukemia diagnosis and staying in Saint June Children's
Research Hospital. What really struck me about that is just
how positive you still are about the experience. Now, granted
everything worked out well and you're cured, and and that's
a beautiful thing. But I got the impression during the
whole treatment process that you were always very positive. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I think that's one of the things that helped me.
I was able to stay positive. I may have a
little bit of a dark humor now, but and Liger
and scheme. I was always positive to the point where
if I was in making jokes or making silly comments

(01:28):
to my doctors, they would be like, are you okay?
Do you want to lay down? Do you want do
you want to liberal Nachia Medicine, Like are you okay?

Speaker 1 (01:38):
I get the impression that the staff is saying Jude
Children's Research Hospitals pretty much the same way. They kind
of force you into that positivity, don't they.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
They do, They really do. Between doctors, nurses, which you
know would be your first yes, they tried to keep
you positive. But then they're the stuff cafeteria. There's your
child life specialists, your social workers, your teacher, which you know,

(02:10):
every single person, even just the gift shop people take
every single person there is. Their goal is to help
you stay better and to help you keep a positive attitude.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah, and that's gonna be hard. I don't know how
they do it. To be quite honest with you, it's
got to be a very hard thing because you see
a lot of sick kids, and you know, they always
makes you sad, but they just remain positive all the time.
I noted too that one of the things that we
talked about yesterdays, you came to Saint Jude from Honduras
when you're a young teen. So you came here not
knowing the language, not knowing the city of Memphis, not knowing,

(02:49):
not really knowing anybody other than your parents that came along.
How how did they help you with that transition?

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Well, it was my parents and my older sister, So
they definitely were a major aspect in me staying positive.
And you know, they helped me and I I didn't
even know could. They helped me in every single aspect
on staying positive, keeping staying in contact with my friends

(03:21):
back at home, you ated.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
While you were here, all those things.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, all of that, they they were making sure that
I had that. And you know, my family was always
there supporting me. And I mean my parents quit their jobs.
My sister was in college, so she had to drop out.
And because they told us a few years and so

(03:49):
we came here. My dad's sound was able to find
a job over here, and that was a blessing. But
in the time that we were kind of a limbo,
they were able to, you know, be here and support me.
I would not have been able to stay as strong
as I did without my family with me, and that
wouldn't have been possible at all without Saint Jude.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
And of course the most important thing of all is
is you know, when you go through a treatment like
you did, you know, over four years worth of chemotherapy
and the bone barrow transplant, all the things that go
along with that, the expenses involved, you don't have to pay.
You never had to pay for any of those things,
and it would who knows how how expensive that would
have been, hundreds of thousands of dollars at a traditional hospital. Millions, yeah,
no doubt.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Millions, Diana's no doubt.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
We're we're so happy you're doing so well, and thank
you again for joining us this morning. Again, if you
would like to donate, we're gonna open up the phone
lines here in about three minutes. By the way, our
Saint Jude Radiothon again. Today's sponsored by Gallery Furniture called
one eight hundred five eight eight fourteen thirty three one
eight hundred five eight eight fourteen thirty three. That's one
eight hundred five eight eight fourteen thirty three. The phone
lines open in just under three minutes.
