Our top story this hour.
Speaker 6 (01:37):
A frenzy around mysterious drones flying over the Northeast continues.
There's two men now arrested for flying one too close
to Boston's Logan International Airports.
Speaker 7 (01:46):
Two men were arrested after a police officer noticed a
drone flying dangerously close to Boston Logan Airport. Now that incident,
it does appear to be isolated and separate from the
prolific amount of sightings that have been happening at primarily
in New Jersey and New York that is sparked by
partisan confusion. Reporters were told by senior Defense Department official
(02:06):
that there have been confirmed drone sightings over two military
bases in New Jersey, but that the source of them,
where they came from, who was running them, could not
be identified.
Speaker 6 (02:15):
That was Fox's Alexandria Hoff at the White House. All
this comes is after a Chinese citizen was arrested for
flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Just a week ago.

President elect Trump naming former Acting Director of National Intelligence
Rit Grennell to serve as Presidential Envoys of Special Missions.
Trump described Renelle as someone who is always putting America first.
Trump's nomine to lead the Deprivement of Health and Human Services,
Robert F. Kennedy, Junior, will meet with key Republican senators
this week. Kennedy's controversial views on vaccines are expected to
(02:48):
draw scrutiny from several lawmakers, and Senator Lindsay Graham says
he doesn't want anonymous claims to derail the nomination at
President elect Trump's secretary of Defense pick.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
In an interview with NBC's Meet.
Speaker 6 (02:59):
The Press, the South Carolina Republicans said that he's talked
to Pete hegsath about the allegations against him and believes
his side of the story. Graham cast out on some
of the claims and said that the unless more accusers
come forwards, he thinks HEGCTH will get approved. All New
polling shows that fifty five percent of likely voters believe
that Donald Trump has a mandate to put his America

First agenda in place when he retakes the oath of office.
Speaker 8 (03:25):
This is a time in history where we need to
come together and do it's right by the country because
what's been going on for decades isn't working.
Speaker 6 (03:33):
And South Carolina Republican congress woman and Nancy Mayce eighty
one percent of Republicans believe Trump has that mandate. Fifty
three percent of voters also said that Congress should cooperate
with Trump in putting his policies into place. More than
two thousand migrants in southern Mexico are organizing a caravan
set to depart later this week, aiming to reach the
(03:53):
US border before President elect Trump's inauguration on January twentieth.
Caravan organizers are using private message in apps and to
coordinate their movements discreetly so not to attract the attention
of any Mexican authorities. Well, Joe Biden's still doing his
best to hurt Trump's agenda. He's now selling off materials
for border wall construction before Trump gets into office, with.
Speaker 9 (04:18):
Bidding starting at five dollars a section. It's a pretty
good deal for Texas.
Speaker 10 (04:21):
I will bid on all of that wall, and we
will bide in Texas and we will give it to
Donald Trump. I've got a billion dollars in my pocket
to do it.
Speaker 9 (04:30):
That's Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick on Fox. He says he's
going to try and stop Biden from hauling these wall
materials off.
Speaker 10 (04:36):
I'm going to check in with our Department of Public Safety.
Maybe we need to start pulling over these trucks to
be sure they don't have too much weight on those trucks.
Maybe these trucks need to be slowed down.
Speaker 9 (04:44):
Patrick also called this attempt to sell these materials that
taxpayers paid for despicable. Ethan Buchanan News Radio seven forty KTRH.

President Biden allowing over one million illegals to stay in
the US through temporary protected status.
Speaker 11 (04:57):

warning that the Texas power grid is more unstable than
three years ago.
Speaker 12 (05:29):
The weak point is ERCOT being an electricity only market,
so generators only profit by contributing.
Speaker 13 (05:35):
Maybe thirty percent of the power. Plants don't operate but
about two months out of the year, and so it
doesn't pay the owners to keep these plants available to
the grid.
Speaker 12 (05:44):
UH energy expert at Hers says that the legislature needs
to take more action with Urcott and stabilizing the grid
will take more power plants.
Speaker 13 (05:51):
We have a lot of wind and solar, but we
don't have a lot of long duration batteries yet. Eventually
we'll get there, but in the meantime we play Urkott
weather roulette.

Speaker 6 (06:06):
Track has taken over the push for a high speed
rail from Houston to Dallas, but needs thirty billion dollars
to get it started. As for whether or not it'll
actually happen.
Speaker 14 (06:16):
It definitely depends on who you ask. The city councils
of Dallas and Houston still seem very supportive, but the
legislators along the rural area of the route have filed
bills that are not friendly through the high speed rail
that they're hoping to get through this session.
Speaker 6 (06:31):
That's reporter Kim Roberts with the Texan. The funding would
have to come from private or federal sources, and the
high speed rail will take at least seventy eight years
to complete. The Houston Texans secure their second consecutive AFC
South title on Sunday. First, the Texans got the twenty
to twelve victory over the Dolphins at NRG Stadium. Then
the Colts lost to the Broncos later in the day.
(06:53):
Texans secured that AFC South Championship. They'll host a wildcard
round in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Texans will play the
Chie this coming Saturday at Kansas City. I'm a Eric
Sharf on Houston's News Weather and traffic station News Radio
seven forty KTRH.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Now back to Jimmy Barrett and the Houston Morning News Team,
Houston's Morning News.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
All right, for those of us who during a different era,
we have a hard time relating to the problem of
pop up parties. But evidently pop up parties are thing,
and now we know it here in Houston. There was
a shooting over the weekend. Two teams deead three injured
at this pop up party. Now, if you're wondering what
the hell a pop up party is, Basically they go
into an empty retail space or an empty office space
(07:40):
and they just set up a party and then on
social media they advertise the party, and a bunch of
kids show up to the party and havoc can ensue.
That's what happened here. What strikes me about the story, though,
is there's a couple of things. First of all, how
do you get at access to a building in North Houston.
(08:04):
How do you get access to a retailed building, whether
it's a warehouse or or just empty office space or
whatever it is. How do you get access to it?
It sounds like in reading in the story that somebody
leased it to somebody, even if it was just for
a weekend kind of a thing. So it seems that
if you are the owner of a building, you know,
(08:27):
it might be wove you to kind of check out
who is leasing the building from you and what their
intended purpose of the building is. That's one thing that
struck me. Another thing that struck me about this is
how many really young people were there Saturday night, eleven
twenty pm. I don't know what your curview was when
you was thirteen years old, but I can assure you
(08:50):
that I was not allowed to be out at eleven
thirty at night when I was thirteen. Maybe when I
was sixteen, yeah, sixteen, seventeen. But there were a lot
of thirteen year old kids who are at this party.
This is where the shooting occurred. And of course you
always wonder, I know, it's Saturday, but you have to wonder,
all where are the parents and all this? You know,
(09:12):
do you allow your thirteen year old child to just
be out Saturday night at eleven thirty? And I guess
a lot of parents, especially some parents these days, do.
They just don't pay a whole lot of attention to
what their kids are doing. It's a shame. So you
had a sixteen year old boy pronounced dead at the scene,
sixteen sixteen year old girl transported to Children's Hospital Texas
(09:36):
Children's Hospital in Houston. She was pronounced dead, and the
three others were injured, including a thirteen year old girl
who was in critical condition at Texas Children's Hospital and
a nineteen year old woman who transported herself to the hospital.
They have no description of the shooters. They have no
description of the shooter's vehicle. It's so far right now,
(09:57):
it's a dead end five to ten time for traffic
and weather.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Together.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
All had a gun in our truck and no one
ever got shot at our livestock pun on the farm
in Tarkington.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
When I was a kid, I'll bet when you were
thirteen though your your mom knew where you were when
you were thirteen years old pretty most of the time.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
And you know, the drinking age back then was five
foot ten.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
So I got my big german friend Greg would go
to Joy Juice and hook us up. Most people in
Liberty County, they're shaking their fingers right now. All right,
let's go to the north side. First of all, fog
is a thing. I hope Terry's not on the line here,
fog is on the line. It's a north freeway outbound
southbound at the north loop. That's stall a stall vehicle
on the right shoulder. I swear I can talk not
(10:37):
much of a backup so far. It doesn't seem to
be causing any suckings just yet. Just watch out and
the thing is I want to see if you can
see seven three two one two tips rest of our freeways. Oh,
they picked up the roadwork on the East Freeway. They
had her shut down for the weekend from downtown to Lockwood.
They had to work on the bridge. One of those
eighteen wheelers hited a while back. I'm Skymike and the
(10:59):
Generator super Center dot com traffic center.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Is that you over there when you're basically about a
week away from Christmas and you're pushing eighty degrees, I
guess you're gonna end up with some fog from our
KTRH top tax defenders twenty four hour whether the center
terry is here. What causes fog this time of the
year is that the temperature between the ground and the air,
the difference between those two.
Speaker 15 (11:18):
So there's a couple of different reasons for fog, the
main one being when the temperature and the due point
or the amount of humidity at the surface is very close,
like right now, our temperature is sixty eight and the
due point sixty eight.
Speaker 16 (11:39):
I would call that close.
Speaker 15 (11:40):
So the humidity is high, and with light winds and
the temperatures having cooled overnight, that does create this cloud
that sits on the ground, these little patche areas of fog.
Let's see the visibilities are running not too bad most places,
but sugar Land less than a mile, report less than
(12:01):
a mile, Angleton also less than a mile. So I
suspect we'll see the fog thicken up a little bit
here until the sun comes up, and then we're just
left with clouds. Today, lots of clouds, twenty percent chance
you'll get wet. It is warm today, mid seventies to
around eighty. We have a twenty percent chance of a shower.
Tomorrow mid to upper seventies. Tomorrow, thirty percent chance of rain. Wednesday,
(12:25):
it's a little bit cooler, load of mid seventies, and
then cooler, dryer air shows up.
Speaker 16 (12:29):
We'll get rid of the fog.
Speaker 15 (12:30):
Thursday and Friday, lots of sunshine and it feels like
it's December with our temperatures midt upper sixties.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Right now sixty nine at your official severe weather station.

It's Houston's Morning News, brought to you by New South
Windows Solutions. Now back to Jimmy Barritt and the Houston
Morning News team all the info you need to take
on the day.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
I haven't had a chance to dig into this story,
but I'm going to because I gotta see what's on
this list. I have a state suspicion. This is part
of the campaign to try to prevent RFK Junior becoming
Health and Human Services secretary. Last week, there was a
story about fifteen or twenty different food items that RFK
(13:13):
Junior may ban if he gets that position. Here's here's
another story with twenty six more grocery items that may
be banned under r f K Junior's health initiatives. Is
as if somehow, all of a sudden, they're gonna start
banning food. I think the intent there is obvious to
make you think that if he gets that job, that
(13:35):
there's gonna be that pizza your eating is gonna be banned.
The ramen noodles that you ate in college are going
to be banned are going to be banned. You won't
be able to eat them anymore. Not enough nutritional value.
I don't think that's what's about it all. It's more
about labeling. We need to put warning labels on food.
Do you think that makes any sense? I don't at
(13:56):
the best of circumstances. I mean, people have talked about
putting more, you know, caution this this, this food contains
high cholesterol causing this food. Do you think that changes
people eating habits? It certainly didn't work for cigarettes for
a long long time five twenty time for traffic and
whether to put.
Speaker 5 (14:10):
The warning labels on computers and screens and stuff, you know, warning.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
This picture butt big. You can put a warning label
on just about anything these days.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
Bad things sometimes, all right, Uh tip line, if you
can't see, let me see if you could see, and
you tell me, uh, what the visibility's like out there?
Seven point three two one two t ips. I do
have one thing of concern here North Freeway. That's a
stall forty five southbound at the six ten North Lupets
right at the interchange ramp.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
That's a sticky spot.
Speaker 17 (14:38):
Alex from Tarkington, Hey, dude, picking nine up here in Splendora.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
I got about that's about a mile visibility.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Should we still be at Sonic fighting with them? No,
that's that's the old days, all right. Northwest side, dude,
I guy.
Speaker 18 (14:51):
Mike Lord, just be Captain Shack.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
There be no frog or fog coming in on two
timing this.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
Oh you know two ninety.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
Not only do we get Captain Jack, but you know
that's where most of my female impersonators that call the
tip line drive in.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
Do you think that President Trump thinks he's smarter than
everybody else? I don't know what he thinks, but I
thought it was interesting that Van Jones, you know who
Van Jones is, right, big Obama guy works at CNN,
has been one of the few Democrats who've been willing
to kind of admit that maybe President Trump is a
little bit smarter than all of his critics, all of
(17:05):
his detractors. Here is what he said over the weekend
on CNN. Uh, and we get some reaction to it.
Speaker 21 (17:12):
Of course, Donald Trump is smarter than me, you and
all critics. You know how I know because he has
the White House, the Senate.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
The House totally agree for the popular vote.
Speaker 21 (17:26):
This dude is is a phenomenon. He is the most
powerful human on earth and in our lifetime.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
And we're still saying, well, how was this card? We
look like idiots or you're He's totally right.
Speaker 22 (17:41):
I love, It's so great.
Speaker 8 (17:45):
You got you behind stages of grief and the last
one is acceptance.
Speaker 23 (17:48):
Are we reaching?
Speaker 24 (17:49):
This is a baby learning to walk. This baby hasn't
learned how to talk. This baby hasn't learned how to reason, interrational,
What we're watching here is not notable. It's only notable
in that it's them noticing the first step on the
way to add. What I mean by this is, of course,
Donald Trump is incredibly smart. Everyone knows this. That's like
understanding the gravity exists. What they don't understand is the
(18:09):
unique combination of things.
Speaker 4 (18:10):
That Donald Trump possesses.
Speaker 24 (18:12):
I was texting with one another old friend of ours
last night about Jadvance. You know what's juststing about Jady Vance.
Not that he's smart, but that he's smart and he's normal.
That's a rare combo. Donald Trump is smart and believe
it or not normal. And then on top of that,
Rachel strong. And that is what they neglect to continue
to appreciate that combination.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
That strength is the outlier.
Speaker 24 (18:35):
Okay, he saw the culture movement, but seeing it and
doing something about it is one step. Because they all
pushed back so hard on it and tried to stop him.
It took unreal strength to push forward with that intellect.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
You know.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
But to get back to the smarter than you comment
the Van Jones main. I mean, it's pretty obvious, right,
any cited the reasons. Look at it, man, he won
the White House, he basically, when he get right down
to it, he won all the lawsuits, he won the
White House, and look who he's got the Senate. He's
(19:10):
got the House. Look who's flocking to him. More and
more world leaders and America business leaders are flocking through
this guy day by day. There has been an epiphany here.
I think, I really do believe this. There has been
an epiphany among the people who, if they weren't directly
opposed to Trump, they were at the very least not
(19:35):
really interested in working with him. That makes them say
they can see what's going on. Zuckerberg can see what's
going on. These world business leaders can see what's going on.
These world leaders can see what's going on. This guy
is large and in charge, and that's not going to change.
So either come to the party and participate or risk
(19:57):
being ostracized at your own expense. Five twenty six, It's
time to take a look at your money. Happy Monday,
Jeff Billinger.

Waiting tables in Washington, d C. Right and you saw
a member of the current administration commitment I don't I
don't care which administration is by dedministration or the incoming
Trump administration, and it was like, I don't know Health
and Human Services secretary or somebody in the cabinet, or
you know, somebody who knows fairly powerful, and they're sitting
(28:36):
at one of your tables. What would you do? Would
you if you if you let's say, what would you
do if you disagreed with their politics? This woman decided
that what she would do is talk to the Washingtonian
magazine about how she would make sure that she gave
them really bad service or no service. She would refuse
to wait on them, and if she somehow was waiting
(28:57):
on them, she'd be sure to tell them exactly what
she thought them. See, last time I checked, don't don't
don't Most waiters and waitresses still rely on tips. Isn't
that generally the top top means of making a living
as a weight person is tips. And the bigger the tips,
the better. And the more money they spend on wine
(29:21):
and food and such and and get the bill way
up there, the more likely you are to get a
big tip. That that's why I always thought it worked.
And not to mention the fact that, let's face it,
you know, a story like that makes the rounds, and
you're associated with this this restaurant on Capitol Hill. Then
(29:44):
words soon spreads that certain people are not welcome there
and and that costs the restaurant business. So guess what
she got fired for. I assume because well, mainly because
they don't want to. The restaurant basically said, we're not
one of the businesses turning down business. You know, we're
in the business of feeding people. We we feed people,
(30:05):
that's what we do, and we you know, our weight
staff is expected to give great service to whoever is
sitting at that table, and it doesn't matter what their
politics are or anything else. So I guess she's looking
for a new gig. Good news is is that, you know,
weight staff comes and weight staff goes, so she'll probably

Drone crazy drones stories all weekend long. Drones everywhere, not
just on the East coast, not just on the West coast.
There was even a report out of Ohio, Ohio. Yeah,
out of Ohio. I think around Dane, Ohio. I guess
there's a military there's a military base up there. Anyway.
Here's the report for you from Fox twenty six in Cincinnati.
Speaker 32 (33:19):
The Dayton Daily News reports that the base says no
property was damaged and no one was harmed. I went
to the Right Patterson Air Force Base. They were unable
to talk to us, but we did talk to a
few people who live in the area. Nobody I spoke
with saw the drones Friday night, but they were familiar
with the sidings on the East coast. Tyler Morgan lives
near Right Patterson's Air Force Base and was surprised to
(33:42):
find out the airspace was shut down for around four hours,
and he was first hearing about it two days later.
Speaker 22 (33:49):
It was kind of shocked to hear that made its
way out here.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
I think there's a lot of unknowns. I think it's
kind of weird. No one really knows what it is.
Speaker 32 (33:57):
Alex Blankenship lives one mile from the base. She says
after seeing the New Jersey sidings near the east Coast,
she thought it was only a matter of time before
they made it to Right Patterson's Air Force Base. With
limited information, people are trying to fill in the blanks.
This is what Blankenship thinks about the drones.
Speaker 9 (34:15):
Think that the government hides a lot of technology from us,
and that this stuff is it's getting harder and harder
to keep quiet.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
Okay, so what do we need to know about Right
Patterson Air Force Space. It's in Green County, Ohio, this
near Dayton, Ohio. There's about fifteen hundred and fifty four
people on that base. It is controlled by the Air
Forces in Air Force Base there. So are the drones
(34:45):
something that the Air Force is experimenting with? Is that
why we're seeing them in Ohio? Or is this cementity
spine on Right Patterson Air Force Base? Evidently that Air
Force bace closed airspace during the sidings, so one would
think it's not something the US government is doing, but
maybe somebody else. But you know, hey, nothing to see here.

Yes, well, inherently we are healthy.
Speaker 33 (37:39):
I mean, beings have protein, fiber, antioxidist, fighter nutrients. You
combined with rice, you get a complete protein, a complex protein.
So you know, and we worked with President Obama years
ago with the Myplay program, which is USDA and let's
move where you take the nutritional pyramid and you put
it into poor control into the different food groups.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
You know.
Speaker 33 (38:02):
But we have standards all over the world that vary,
and we need to get together, you know, Mexico, KINDAA,
the European Union, even California has different standards.
Speaker 4 (38:14):

Speaker 33 (38:15):
So we really need to work and getting those standards
established and working together so we have something that can
you know, we make a million labels with three thousand products,

Speaker 34 (38:32):
Well, it sounds like RFK Junior really wants to go

It's a change from Biden.
Speaker 33 (39:09):
You well, you can we were there. It is palpable.
You can already feel the change. The presidents on the
world stage in France, you know, Trudeau and Canada and
our friends in Mexico is threatening some tariffs and they're
getting in line. We could have our fifty firsts and
fifty second states. The president was quipping, but you know,
(39:32):
you're already feeling. We initiated the Biden term with the
Warren fossil fuel, green new Deal, out of control spending,
and then our weakness the war in the Ukraine and Russia,
which is the bread basket for Northern Africa and Europe,
and so the wheat, the corn, all these things. This
skyrocket during COVID, the supply chain freights went up ten times.
(39:56):
You know, a trailer from Thailand would be eighteen hundred
dollars went up to eighteen thousand, and you couldn't get
a trail. It was like a you know, blackmail. So
and so all these things took off, and we see
this president back. He's already a new sheriff in town.

One Biden administration official said that there had been a
slight overreaction from some residents who are seeing these drones incoming.
National Security Advisor Mike Walls claims that the issue is
bringing attention to something else.
Speaker 36 (42:45):
I think what the drone issue points out are kind
of gaps in our agencies, gaps in our authorities between
the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement, the Defense Department.
I think Americans are finding it hard to believe we
can't figure out where these are come coming from.

O eight our time here on Houston's Morning News. I
consider this scare tactics. You know that they're running these
lists online of here are some of the Here are
the twenty six latest food grocery items that may be
banned under an RFK Junior Health Initiative. What they're doing
is they're looking for anything that has artificial color, artificial flavor,
(47:33):
artificial anything processing in it and making the assumption, I
guess that somehow these these foods are going to be
in danger. I will say this, it is interesting to
look at the list if we're no other reason then
to know what's in some of these things that we
just don't pay a whole lot of attention to. Number
one item on this list instant noodles, you know, like
(47:53):
ramen noodles, convenience stable, but they contain high levels of sodium,
artificial flavors, and preservatives like territary buterol. Most of these names,
they can't even begin to pronounce, a synthetic antioxidant that
has been linked to negative health effects in some studies, Yes,
some studies. What else is the oh, farm raised salmon
(48:15):
often fed synthetic some sort of synthetic color to enhance
its pink color. This artificial coloring has raised health concerns
in some studies. They may want to take a look
at artificial coloring in farm raised salmon. Artificial sweeteners, of course,
you know, like aspartame and cyclose and the stuff that's
(48:37):
in diet sodas and sugar free products. Microwave popcorn, they
contain pf oas, which is in their lining, a chemical
associated with various health risk. Additionally, the artificial butter flavor
make and train it contained a chemical linked to lung
issues in factory settings. Yes, we know that, but that
(48:59):
is in the production of it. That's just not in
making it and eating it. So again, big thing about
maybe nothing high fruitose corn syrup. I think we know
that that stuff's not particularly good. Transfats and baked goods
could be on the list. Frozen pizza what they contain
preservatives like sodium nitrite in the meats and artificial flavors
in the crust could face reformulation under stricter guidelines. Oh
(49:23):
maybe that wouldn't be all bad. Canned tomatoes have BPA
packaging concerns. Processed cheese contains often contains emulsifiers, artificial colors,
and preservatives to maintain texture and shelf life, and also
on the list. Underscrutiny is anything that has an artificial
food flavoring, and that is a whole lot of stuff.

It is just about six twenty here in Houston's Morning News.
You probably saw the report. We certainly did that. That
indicates that our power experts are a little concerned about
whether or not the grid can make it through the winter. Now,
we had all this hardening of the grid that supposedly
(52:27):
happened after a storm jury came through and in North
Texas was hugely impacted by that. We lost our power
round here for a number of days as well in
freezing temperatures. That didn't turn out very well. So why
are they so worried? If they've taken the necessary steps
to harden the grid, why are they worried? Doctor ed
Hurst joins us Energy Fellow at the University of Houston.

You have it like our wires live six twenty three
is our time here in Houston's mooring dows. That means
the electricity is flowing through. Doctor ed Hurs joins US
Energy Fellow at the University of Houston. I get the
impressions sometimes that Urkats maybe out of either abundance of
caution or just after all the flack they took for
not being transparent with us during Yuri when we had
(55:11):
so many power problems, that maybe this is why they
are reacting with these premature what I would call premature
warnings about losing power this winner. They seem to be
concerned about the grid. Are they concerned about the grid?
And if so, why I thought we hardened the grid.
Speaker 13 (55:27):
Well, we hardened the grid, we just didn't expand the grid.
You know, Urkat said prior to Uri, there was a
five percent chance of rolling blackouts in the event of
a storm like Cury. This year, it's an eighty percent
chance of rolling blackouts in the event of a storm
bi Cury. And the reason is we haven't added any
power plants to the grid since twenty twenty one.
Speaker 4 (55:51):
You know.
Speaker 13 (55:51):
The URKOT management is directed by the Public Utility Commission,
which is directed by the governor, and COT ordinarily doesn't
make investments. It's unlike other grids which will go out
in advance and contract for power or COTT doesn't do that,
and so we Texas leadership has to provide the incentives
(56:18):
for companies like NRG or Vista or Cowpie to build
new power plants, and we haven't done that. We remember
last March, Blackrock was in town. The governor and the
Lieutenant governor went to Blackrock asked them for ten billion
dollars to build natural gas power plants, and Blackrock said, no,
we're not going to do it. We can't make any
money the way you've got your market set up. And
(56:39):
in twenty twenty one, Berkshire Hathaway Energy and star Ward
Energy Capital both proposed bringing nine thousand to ten thousand
mega loots of power plants to the grid. Those would
have been operating by now. All they asked for was
a nine percent rate of return, and the state leadership said, no,
we don't believe in paying for people to to stay
(57:00):
on the bench. You know, the challenge is the Texas
electricity market. The aircut market is electricity only, and so
only those generators that are actually in use today are
getting paid. If the Texans were paid that way, only
those guys taking the field yesterday would have been paid.
Speaker 4 (57:17):
Those who stayed on the bench wouldn't get paid.
Speaker 13 (57:20):
And you know when we have peak in the winter
and peak demand in the summer, that's when we need
all power plants there. Well, today we don't have enough
power plants to service us in you know, cold winter night.
Speaker 3 (57:34):
Well, at the last time I checked up your hurst,
we are still adding population, and we're adding a lot
of businesses, and we're adding a lot of businesses that
use a lot of power. So there's a real disconnect here.
We're living on borrowed time unless we get some more
power plants.
Speaker 13 (57:48):
No, you're absolutely right. And as soon as we can
get any in if you and I were to start
today with the Jimmy and Ed Power Company, it would
be maybe two years. If we could find the equipment,
probably four years and then get the connects. You know,
this is going to be a real challenge. You know,
we've got long duration batteries that are joining the grid
(58:10):
very quickly, but you know we don't have enough of them,
and so in the meantime we need natural gas power
plants to spend up, and to be fair, nobody wants
to do it because they can't make any money.
Speaker 4 (58:23):
CPS.
Speaker 13 (58:24):
The city owned utility of San Antonio bought two relatively
new power plants for fifty cents on the dollar. Earlier
this year, NURG sold off one old unit for about
forty cents on the dollar. So building a new one
is not a good economic objective for anybody on Wall Street.
(58:45):
They're not going to give you the money to do.
Speaker 4 (58:46):
It, got you. So it's going to have to come
up on the state, is what you're saying.
Speaker 13 (58:51):
It's going to have to do that, or we as
a state are going to have to guarantee people a
rate of return. And you know in the old days,
that's what happened. The chairman of the board of URKAT
last week said, well, this ain't your granny's grid. Well, no,
granny had a grid that actually worked. It was end
to end reliable, it was a direct supply chain. And
(59:13):
today what we're left with granny's old generators and they're
breaking down is.
Speaker 3 (59:17):
Nine percent affair return? Or is that asking for too much?
Is black Rock guys asking for too much for a
nine percent return?
Speaker 13 (59:24):
I you know, a nine percent rate of return when
everybody else is given him fifteen, twenty and thirty or
or less. You know, it's stable. It's what needs to happen.
You know, without power, we can't stay in the twenty
first century. We can't talk on the radio, we can't
have our cell phones, we can't microwave our bacon. We're
(59:45):
we're in deep trouble without electricity. And for what electricity provides,
the cost of it is really just a small fraction
of the value.
Speaker 3 (59:54):

would be star Base Texas, the South Texas site where
SpaceX built and launches its SpaceX rocket ships, into an

All right, type for another drone update six fifty two
stir time here on the Houston's Morning News. All right,
we have a drone service provider aligned CEO. That's quite
a title. That's what he does. He flies drones for living,
he sells drones for living. His name is Vic Moss.
He says that a lot of what is being spotted
(01:15:09):
aren't really drones their aircraft. So whatever you do, don't
shoot these things down.
Speaker 41 (01:15:13):
The vast majority of the in focus video I'll say,
in focus video that we've seen are aircraft. It's pretty
easy to designate, you know, to really see whether or
not it's an aircraft. I'm not saying all of them are,
but with the exception of one video I did see
this afternoon, it's pretty obvious that they are aircraft.
Speaker 34 (01:15:34):
So one of the problems is nobody's really been able to.
Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
Pin that down. We're sort of speculating on that.
Speaker 34 (01:15:41):
So then you get the question of, Okay, well, what
do we do And because there's sort of no official response,
one of the things that even the President elect has said, look,
if we don't know what they are, let's take them
down and figure out what they are.
Speaker 4 (01:15:54):
But taking them down.
Speaker 34 (01:15:56):
Is tricky, right, I mean, so like you can't just
do that in the neighborhood. Right, So if you're going
to do something like that.
Speaker 4 (01:16:03):
How do you do it? You don't.
Speaker 41 (01:16:06):
Let's just let's just let's just spell that myth right now.
Actually really incredibly disappointed in our president elect for stating that,
first of all, shooting out a drone the same thing
as shooting down seven forty seven. Legally, we are protected
under eighteen USC thirty two. And the illegality and aside
the idiocy and danger behind it is, first of all,
(01:16:29):
if it's a legitimate drone, let's make sure we say.
If then you're powered by lithium polymer batteries, and you
puncture a lithium polymer battery, you've got a fire on
your hands. So you've got to you've got a dive
bomber basically, and if you shoot it down over your
neighbor's house, you're going to be your insurance is going
to be rebuilding your neighbor's house. But since so many
of them are also I don't know if I want
(01:16:51):
to use the word also, but let's say so many
of them could be manned aircraft. If you shoot down
manned aircraft, you don't even know what the implications are there,
So no, shooting them down is out of the question.
Nobody should do it. It's no, just don't. I mean, there's
no excuse for it.
Speaker 3 (01:17:07):
Really, Yeah, somebody's going to you know, it's going to happen.

Donald Trump reportedly considering privatizing the United States Postal Service.
(01:26:19):
It's at least according to a report from the Washington Post,
three people with knowledge of the matter of the term.
Speaker 4 (01:26:26):
Three people with knowledge of the matter.
Speaker 3 (01:26:28):
Told the outlet that Trump had been talking with Howard Lutnick,
who Trump picked a Service Commerce secretary, about carrying out
an overhaul, but that quotes of the US Postal Service now,
overhaul doesn't necessarily mean privatized, but I guess it could.
Trump's plans regarding how he plans to overhaul the postal
(01:26:49):
service not immediately clear. One of the sources told the
outlet that Trump had met with a group of transition
officials and had requested their input on privatizing the agency.
I think the unsed state's postal system should have been
privatized a long time ago. Of course, if it had
and it hadn't made any changes or improvements, it would
be bankrupt, out of business by now. The only reason
(01:27:11):
why the post Office is not out of business is
not bankrupt. It is because it's propped up by your
tax dollars, because it's run by the United States government
and the most inefficient way humanly possible. Trump has criticized
the post Office as being and I quote, a joke.
Can we all agree that the way it is now,
(01:27:31):
it's kind of a joke. It loses billions and billions
of dollars every year. Last year was like ten billion.
It's just you can't run a business like that. And
if we were to treat every single government entity like
it was a business, where you either here's your budget,
you don't get any more. This is how you live
(01:27:54):
within your means. You have to run your department for
X amount of dollars. If we ran every single government
agency that way, that they would be forced at some
point to figure out how to run it efficiently. And
there's nothing more slow at doing changes than the post
office and the government one of the same. Slow, slow, slow.
(01:28:15):
They're slow at adopting new ways of doing things. They're
slow at adopting technology. They're slow at everything. They're slow
at delivering the mail. They're slow at everything. The only
way to potentially fix it is to privatize it. In
the long haul, the question becomes, all right, what do
you what do you do with all the postal carriers
are in retirement? How do you handle the retirement because
(01:28:36):
all gay government mentions at this point seven to ten
time for traffic, and whether they go then.

work at the driver's license office is maybe a little
bit easier than trying to recruit more law enforcement. We've
(01:34:12):
had a shortage there for quite some time. Johnny us
to talk about Greg Freeman, retired HPD Captain. Welcome to
the show, sir. Let's talk about the difficulty of in
just attracting people to law enforcement these days. This has
been going on ever since the George Floyd incident, and
maybe a little bit before that.
Speaker 3 (01:34:29):
It's become very, very difficult. But if you've got fifteen
hundred plus positions that are open with the Texas Department
of Public Safety, that tells us it's not just a
Houston issue. It's a state wide issue.
Speaker 18 (01:34:43):
Yeah, Jimmy, good morning, Thank you for having me. It's
a national issue. And we've seen this trending ever since
the post George Floyd rise of twenty twenty and law
enforcement across the board. We saw mass exodus of senior
veteran officers that were leaving a department, and it was
hard recruiting, and it was for a couple of years,
(01:35:03):
but the pendulum has starting to swing back the other way.
You have a lot of variables that are out there.
The military is trying to recruit, the police departments are
trying to recruit in the private sector, and you have
a very select pool of applicants that are qualified right
now to join. And what we see happening also is
that you have departments that are changing their hiring standards
to try to meet their quotas for getting these cadets in.
Speaker 4 (01:35:25):
Well.
Speaker 3 (01:35:25):
Is that a problem though, changing those those quotas as
far as you know what they're what they're requiring. The
physical requirements of the job have always been rather stringent,
at least for cadets that are coming in. Do those
need to be loosened up or is that potentially dangerous
to do that?
Speaker 18 (01:35:43):
It is a it's a flippery slope, Jimmy, it is.
You know, you want to make sure that you're hiring
the best and the most qualified and the most competent.
And I'd like to say Houston has still maintained a
very good firm grip on our hiring. They have changed
the requirements and made it a little bit more accessible.
For the educational requirements hiring, you can have employment for
(01:36:04):
three years out of a four year period and that
can be satisfied as one of the requirements, opposed to
having a forty eight hours. But you have other departments
that are starting to loosen the requirements, and it kind
of it opens up a Pandora's box. It really does
when you start hiring applicants that might have criminal records
or drug usage. And so it's always been a challenge
(01:36:29):
and it will contain to be a challenge trying to
find those applicants that meet the requirements.
Speaker 3 (01:36:32):
Yeah, both smoking a little marijuana is one thing, but
a criminal record, that's quite another problem. You know, how
loosely are some of these departments looking at that particular
requirement not having a criminal.
Speaker 18 (01:36:44):
Record the department I can use Houston as an example,
and I'm hoping I'm getting the information, Craig, But they'll
look at a person that might have had a Class
BE misdemeanor arrests or a Class C and they will
go back five to ten years, so that person could
not have had something prior to a ten year period
or and that and that's understandable. It could have been
(01:37:06):
a Class B offense and or a drug usage over
a certain period of time.
Speaker 3 (01:37:12):
What would be in those requirements would be a Class
B offense other than maybe you smoking a joint? What
would be a Class B offense? D w I Okay, And.
Speaker 18 (01:37:24):
It could be a Now, if it's a crime of
moral turpitude, a sex offense, or something to that effect,
then no, that's going to exclude them completely. But you
have other offenses that are out there, trespassing, any type
of domestic violence, that's that's going to be a disqualifier.
So there are things out there that will immediately disqualify
(01:37:46):
a cadet from or an applicant from applying.
Speaker 4 (01:37:49):
Yeah, what if you've just been accused? Is it?
Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
Is it just if you've been convicted of one of
these offenses, or is it if you been arrested for
one of these offenses?
Speaker 18 (01:37:59):
No, arrest is different. It's going to be a conviction,
deferred adjudication and probation, anything of that nature where the
case has been disposed of. And there's a lot of
people out there that think that if they get their
record exposed, that that's going to give them a free
pass and it does not. And that's a bigness number
in the criminal justice world.
Speaker 3 (01:38:15):
You know, we talk all the time, Greg about the
importance of paying these people what they're worth. I don't
know that we'll ever pay police officers what they're worth.
I pray some day we will. But you know, money
has always been an issue. Not to say that money
alone is going to be the answer, because certainly most
people have become police officers. I believe that they considered
a vocational like location as much as they considered a
(01:38:36):
way to make a living. But how much do you
think improvement over starting salaries for police officers could make
a big difference as far as recruiting more people.
Speaker 18 (01:38:46):
Oh, it's a huge factor, Jimmy, And I mean, Houston
likes to stay competitive, but we're still far down on
the total ball. We're probably six or seventh in the state.
You have agencies like Plane OPD that are starting our
officers out at one hundred and eight thousand dollars, whereas
Houston is starting their cadets out at forty eight I believe.
But within the first year or two years, you know,
(01:39:06):
they're making in the mid fifties. But it's a very
decisive factor. But it's a big city and it's all
about taxing and to pay your officers more. We run
about five classes a year and there's about seventy cadets
in each class. So on a good year we might
graduate three hundred and fifty cadets. But we're also averaging
about two hundred to three hundred retirees, so you're really
(01:39:28):
only getting a net benefit of about fifty to maybe
one hundred officers added onto the street. We have the
same number of officers now that we had twenty years ago.
Let that think, endy, we have about fifty one hundred
offsers that's what we had twenty years ago, and our
city has increased by over a million in population that
we know of, and.
Speaker 3 (01:39:46):
By twenty forty they're saying we may be the third
largest city in the United States. Yep, it's problem, Greg.
Speaker 4 (01:39:51):
We will be. We will be.

it turns out it's not just the Houston Police Department

Speaker 9 (01:42:44):
Turns out law enforcement agencies across the country are all
having this problem.

Law enforcement in the military and other private sectors are

All Right, So Houston's big and keeps getting bigger. And
you know, I think we've done a few of these
stories in the past, but I keep seeing them, so
there must be some truth to it. And for those
of us who live here, it's a dual ed sword
because we already have a population that is well in
(01:47:10):
access of eight million people that are part of eight
million people at this point in the population. How much
is going to grow depends on a lot of different things.
But everything I have seen says that by the time
twenty forty rolls around, Houston's population could be as much
(01:47:32):
as twelve million people in the Houston Galveston metro area.
That would be about a sixty eight percent increase in population.
Most of the growth would be in the city of
Houston and in Harris County, which is already pretty congested. Now,
(01:47:58):
what drives the growth the course, is probably going to
be the economy. It generally is the climate. It generally is,
let's face it, you know, for those of us who
don't want to live somewhere where there's winter, this is
a good place to be. For someone looking for economic opportunity,
this is a great place to be, and people have
been figuring that out and have been leaving northern cities
(01:48:19):
like Chicago, for example, in order to head more towards
Houston or the South. In general. The population. If the
population continues to grow the way it has the projected,
then our past guest Greg Freeman would be absolutely correct.
Houston would go from being the sixth largest metro area
(01:48:44):
in the country to being the third largest. We would
overtake Chicago. It'd be New York number one, Los Angeles
number two, Houston number three. And there are other Texas
cities Austin, San Antonio, Dallas who would continue to move
up the charts as well. Seven forty time for traffic

You know, if Secretary of my orcis tells me I
should not be concerned, I'm immediately concerned. Seven fifty two
is our time here on Houston's Boarding News. Also concerned
is a New Jersey representative. His name is Chris Smith,
who met with law enforcement and was told that some
of these drones are coming from the ocean.
Speaker 43 (01:54:23):
So last night I was on the beach in Island
State Park in Ocean County with the with the Sheriff's
he has been working it every single night. He's got
his own tether drones chronicling. One of his officers two
nights ago saw fifty drones come in off the ocean
right there, so he thought maybe they'll replicated.
Speaker 38 (01:54:45):
They didn't, but we thought it was a possibility. I
then last night.
Speaker 43 (01:54:49):
We had a number of other people there, including a
commanding officer from the from the Coastguard, who said that
one of their forty seven foot motor life boats was
followed by between twelve and thirty of these drones as
they went through the water, followed right behind them, you know.
Speaker 38 (01:55:09):
And I said, what's the rules of engagement?
Speaker 43 (01:55:10):
I mean, you do it if you're fighting against a
you know, a narco trafficker or something. And they said,
we don't know, we don't have any So I did
reach out to the committee officer at the Joint Base,
which is also in my district and talk to him.
Had a very good conversation Colonel Anthony Smith, Joint Base
Fort Dix, McGuire and the eighty seventh Air Wing Airbase
(01:55:31):
Wing today and I said, I know you have the capability,
you put out press releases to.
Speaker 38 (01:55:37):
Identify and bring down drones.
Speaker 43 (01:55:41):
Why can't you deploy them at least to the ocean,
bring one of these down, find out who's doing it.
They have the capability, he said, we don't have the
authority only within the parameters of our base.
Speaker 38 (01:55:52):
Well, there's a national interest here.
Speaker 43 (01:55:55):
Our jets fly over the ocean all the time for trading,
so that perimeter is larger. So I did write Secretary
Lloyd Austin asking that that capability that may be sitting
in a closet somewhere.
Speaker 38 (01:56:07):
I know they use it all the time, but you know,
bring it out. And I'm not saying you got to share.
Speaker 43 (01:56:12):
It with the sheriffs would be nice, Just do it
yourself the interest of the of the American public. So
I would ask if you would echo that request. I mean,
do D's got the capability? And maybe Homeland Security does
as well. When we had a zoom meeting with Secretary Mayorcis,
our governor put it together and I appreciated that, but
(01:56:33):
I asked them, why can't we just track where they
go to? Seemingly they're going out to sea to something
at ship. We don't know for sure, but they come
in off the off the you know.
Speaker 4 (01:56:43):
From the ocean.
Speaker 38 (01:56:44):
So the question really is can't we just get d
D to share.
Speaker 43 (01:56:49):
In my first term, d O d n v A
did a great thing, the v A d O d
v A Shay Agreement for healthcare capabilities.
Speaker 38 (01:56:56):
It was fantastic.
Speaker 43 (01:56:57):
Why can't the d D share this with Home Security,
with FBI and others so that you can go out
and find out who they are?
Speaker 38 (01:57:03):
Maybe it's China. I chaired the China Commission.
Speaker 43 (01:57:06):
And you know, I've had one hundred and fifteen hearings
on it. I'm barred from going there now. China is
and I'm on their hit list. You know, Shijingping is
a monster. You know, we'll look at Putin's doing. They're
all capable of doing horrible things to our people, and
now they're threatening my good friend and colleague from New York.
Speaker 38 (01:57:24):
And of course New Jersey big time.
Speaker 43 (01:57:26):
So let's go get that DoD capability and find out
and put the rest the question who is it?
Speaker 3 (01:57:32):
Okay sounds to me like he thinks it's China. As
for President Trump, he had the President Trump actually said
shoot these things down, So I would think as the
incoming president, that somebody would have given him some sort
of security briefing. Wouldn't you think if this was you know,
if this was anything that he needed to know about,
(01:57:54):
or would they or would they you know? Like I said,
I don't take anything. Secretary of Marioca says with a
grain of salt at all. He says, Yeah, you don't
need to be worried about this. I yeah, I think
you do. I think you do need to be worried
about it. All right, listen, you'll have a great day.
