Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, it's Home improve In Time. Seven to fifty
two is our time here in Houston's morning News. We
have Jim Dutton from the Home Improvement Show heard here
on KTRH on the weekend. All right, Jim, what's the
number one problem you expect to see? As we thought
of broken pipes?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
You know there won't be the main pipes. It's going
to be mostly on elbows and things like that. But yeah,
that's probably what we're going to be finding.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Okay, Now, one thing I did, and I want to
get your opinion on this one thing. We have a
beach house, and one thing we did is we put
in the flex pipe. You recommend people put in flex
pipe just to kind of cover them a little bit
because that's got a little more give and take than
your standard PVC pipe.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Are you talking about? Yeah, Pecks. Absolutely. The nice thing
about pecks is even in the water in it freezes,
it expands and then it contracts back to its normal
size when everything saws out, it doesn't break the pipe.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Okay, that's good to know. What are some other things
that that folks should be looking for the house as
we know come out of this winter storm and the
snow melts and the ice melts. What are some other
things they made want to look at just to make
sure everything's okay.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Well, one of the big things you're going to probably
want to be checking is if you did have pipes freeze,
why did they freeze? Were they not wrapped? Was there
a hole in the insulation somewhere? So you want to
go through and check all that stuff out. And then
if you had cold drafts in the house, why let's
steal them up because you know your air conditioning is
going out through those same holes in the summer months.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah, it's a good point. So you know, anything that's
air infiltration in the winter time is also air infiltration
the summertime. Either way, it's driving your bills up right Yep.
What do you recommend as far as because a lot
of folks have My home was built, I want to say,
like in twenty ten, it's pretty well insulated. But homes
here in Houston that are you know, maybe from the

(01:52):
nineties or the eighties probably aren't that well insulated, at
least compared to the way they do it now. What
should how much insulation do you really need to have
these days to make sure that your home is going
to stay fairly weatherproof when it gets cold like it is.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Well, you could be like my house from the seventies.
I have R eleven in the walls, where standard now
is our thirteen for fiberglass. In the attics, you're typically
looking for fifteen sixteen inches of insulation up there, and
in our climate, what we really want to do is
make sure we're covering the pipes as well. Wrap them
if they're exposed. But if you can get them covered

(02:28):
with insulation, you're doing yourself.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
A world of good. Okay, any other pieces of advice
you want to pass along in the thirty four or
thirty five seconds left to.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Us, Yeah, if you didn't do it, get all the
hoses off of the hose bibs oh Man, because that
when the hose freezes, it's going to freeze the hose bib.
And you know, we've still got some cold weather coming
up that you know, you maybe got through already, but
we still got some cold nights coming that you could
still have a problem.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
That's good advice for those who haven't heard of your
program before. What day and time are you.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
On Saturdays from two to four and Sundays from two
to three?

Speaker 1 (03:06):
All right check them out. Jim Dutton, The Home Improvement Show.
Thanks Jim, appreciate it. Good advice, good advice for us
all to heat. I'm sure he was giving a lot
of good advice to our listeners as well about preparations
for the cold. You know, hopefully, hopefully, if you're a
listener to his, hopefully you don't have any problems today
because you already did the things necessary to prevent the
bad things from happening. But you know, again, big thing

(03:27):
to look out today is the weather warms up. Is
whether or not your pipes are okay, And hopefully they
are
