Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks finally to the Texas House, some of those kids
will have a chance to not have to go back
to their old school. That's provided, of course, you know,
we get through the Senate, which should be fine, you know,
because after all, it was sent a bill too that
they passed early this morning, and then of course we
know the governor's going to sign it. Join us to
talk about school choice. State Representative Mitch Little, congratulations, sir, Jimmy.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Good morning. Yeah, we did.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
We finally stuck together like Republicans. Amazingly enough, I couldn't.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
You know.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
It's good for the people at Texas that Republicans voted
like Republicans. We only had Dave Feelin and Gary Van
Dever on the Republican Party who did not support the
school choice initiative.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Well that's a far cry of the way it used
to be, that's for sure. Did any Democrats vote in
favor of this?

Speaker 3 (00:45):
You know what, it happened so fast about four hours
ago that I didn't see there might have been No.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
I don't think so. I don't think so. I think
this was a straight party line vote.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Here's the part, Representative a Little. Here's the part that
I I don't quite understand, and maybe you don't either,
or maybe you figured it out. Let's find out. You
know a lot of people who are going to benefit
from this have parents with a DNA next to the name.
They vote Democrat in many different cases, because we're talking
about kids in many in many cases, minority kids who

(01:17):
come from underperforming schools are going to be the ones
who are probably going to be the first to benefit
from the school choice bill and have a better educational opportunity.
Why would Democrats oppose that?

Speaker 3 (01:27):
When you create one hundred billion dollar system, which is
what public education is in Texas, now, that system tends
to pick up vendors along the way, It tends to
pick up teachers, unions, it tends to pick up powerful
taxpayer funded lots, and they just don't want the gravy
trained to end. If you think about what we did yesterday, Jimmy,
we put another over eight billion dollars into public schools

(01:52):
to make sure that our teachers get paid what they're
supposed to get paid, and that the school has the
resources it needs to deliver the programs it needs for children.
And for some reason, the Democrats think this one billion
dollar program that could potentially help people who are stuck
in failing schools is going to break the entire system.

(02:12):
I think they just don't want anyone to have a
meaningful choice.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Jimmy.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Well, it's about accountability, and it's always been about accountability
as far as you said, right, it is the gravy train,
but it's also about accountability. They don't like to have
the you know, the state scores released either, do they
these school systems? They don't love that.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
How many years were we in litigation over that?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Jimmy, Yeah, I mean that they're trying to have a
federal lawsuit or trying to bring lawsuits to prevent the
scores from even being known.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Right, And those scores make hell the case for school choice,
which is another reason why they don't want you to
know just how poorly some of these schools are performing.
But the good news is is that obviously it's going
to be something the governor's going to sign. Now, it's
going to come go into law. Have we worked out
the details? How is this going to work? How quickly
will kids get an opportunity for school choice? Is this
something that's going to be for the next school year?

(03:01):
How's this going to work? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:03):
I think the devil's in the details. Now, it's the
logistics of it.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
So I believe that it's going to go into effect
September one. It's going to make it particularly challenging for
kids to be able to roll into the program unless
you're homeschooled, be able to roll into the program immediately.
I think it's going to show some immediate benefit for
people who can get enrolled in a private school, can
get in, you can shift away from pub ed to homeschooling,

(03:31):
and I think the resources will kind of meet them
there in time. But one of the challenges, truly, Jimmy,
is that people are going to have to start figuring
out do I need.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
To test to get into a private school?

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Now?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Do I need to start applying? Is this going to
be available to me?

Speaker 3 (03:47):
And I think the governor will have communications resources to
be able to explain all that man.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
And I'm guessing this is just the start, right, This
is a good start, because only about one hundred thousand
kids are going to benefit from a one billion dollar
style been pooled here. There's going to have to be
more money in the future.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Well, if we're gonna let's see how many people it helps,
I think we'll have the benefit of having some good
stories and good outcomes for students who are really served
by the program. And then the people of Texas and
certainly their representatives will have to decide do we want
to go deeper in?

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Is this something that can reach more people? Yeah, I
think you're right. Stay repped. Thank you appreciated this. Mitch
