Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, we know why they ran away redistricting. We know
where they ran away to, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York. Matt
Hill joins as senior election correspondent at the Federalists. This
is this is a real go to thing for Democrats.
It's had mixed results. But about ten years ago, you
wrote a story about ten years ago in Wisconsin, they
tried the same kind of a stunt. It did not

(00:22):
work out well for Democrats there.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
What happened, No, it wasn't good for the Democrats. Ultimately
they lost that battle. That was if you recall over
collective bargaining reforms at the Wisconsin state Capitol. It was
called Act ten. Governor Scott Walker was the Republican governor
at that time, and Republicans had just swept into the legislature.

(00:45):
They proposed a budget repair bill fixed because they were
looking at a huge budget deficit, and within that to
fix that budget, they proposed a bill that would reform
collective the bargaining got a lot of the public sector
collective bargaining protections or the power that the big unions

(01:09):
had in the state. And of course the Democrats went
ballistic and they went away to Illinois. Oddly enough, where
they sought sanctuary for a few long weeks, and then
ultimately the Republicans who controlled the Senate said, fine, will
go on without you, and they changed the bill in

(01:30):
Wisconsin from a fiscal bill and they took out the
Act ten provision was a non fiscal bill. So in
the state constitution, if it's non fiscal, you didn't meet
a quorum. And so that's how Act ten came about
without the temper tantrum of the Democrats.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
I don't know if we have that mechanism here in Texas.
I'm not that deep into, you know, what Texas law
would say about it. I do know that the governor
is talking about potentially removing them from office for for
for not being here, for not doing their jobs, and
he's also looking at the possibility of charging them with

(02:10):
bribery for taking money. It looks like betel Work may
be involved in paying for some of this stuff, you know,
for the plane tickets and you know, for the airfare
and and all the other things hotel rooms and meals
and the other things, because we don't pay our state
legislators a whole lot here in Texas. So my guess
is that one way or another, there's going to be
some charges coming for these these Democrats if they don't

(02:32):
get back by tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
You do have that mechanism because you've been down this
road before. You have to go through the through the
court system in Texas, of course, and that's another layer
and this thing could you know, drag out longer because
of that. But I think eventually the Democrats are are
going to wear down. They're already positioning themselves in other

(02:58):
states to punish Republicans, they say, and that they're going
to do the same thing, and they're going to Jerrymander,
who can play at this game. It's it's though it
is ironic that they fled to one of the most
jerry men, yes in the country.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
And that's the.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Sort of political theater that we're dealing.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
With right well. And speaking of political theater, do you
see the Massachusetts governor threatening to to to redistrict there
so that there are no Democrats serving in Congress? There
aren't any Democrats serving in the US House of Representatives
for Massachusetts. What are you threatening with? It wouldn't change anything.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Thing, Yeah, exactly, they have They have no standing, as
we say, legally speaking, when it comes to that because
They've been doing this for years, and I hope the
people of Texas and the American people get the you know,
the political stunt that here.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah, it'll be fun watch how this whole thing works out.
Matt Kittle, thanks for your contriby. I do appreciate it.
That is senior election correspondent at The Federalist, Matt Kittle
