Houston Cougars men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson joins "The Matt Thomas Show with Ross" to preview a charity exhibition game against the Texas A&M Aggies. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance Hurricane Beryl Recovery Fund. The Cougars, who were ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll, have an early test against a formidable opponent ahead of their season opener against Jackson State on November 4. "In a month from now, nobody is going to remember this game, but it's part of our process," Sampson said. "It's so early in the season to be making decisions, so we're just going to let the guys play." The Cougars finished last season with a 32-5 record, earned the Big 12 Conference regular-season championship, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and appeared in the Sweet 16 for the fifth consecutive year. Four starters and nine lettermen have returned to the lineup, one of which is guard LJ Cryer, who led the Cougars in scoring last season. "He's an outstanding shooter... I'd just like to see him be a little bit more aggressive." Sampson also comments on the emergence of NIL and the importance of the transfer portal in collegiate athletics. These elements have led many coaches to express their concerns and outright leave the game, as most recently with Sampson's friend Tony Bennett, the former Virginia basketball coach who suddenly retired earlier this month. "The reason I got into this profession to begin with, I still love," Sampson said. "I'll evolve and change because I have to."

Speaker 1 (00:00):
And then Sunday, I'm very happy to be calling the
game on television. It's a special exhibition game featuring the
Houston Cougars and the Texas A And m Aggie's in
to talk about that game and all things college basketball.
Is my good friend at Kelvin Sampson here on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross Coach. I love that the
NCAA allows you guys to play some heavy hitters. I

(00:20):
know it's not gonna mean anything on the scorecard, but
having this kind of early season tests has got to
be good for.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
You guys, right it is.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
We're coming off a secret I guess in parenthesis, sacred
scrimmage last Saturday. So now when you go back to
practice or some things that you know you need to
clean up, you're still trying to get the new guys
in and so you can evaluate them so they can

(00:49):
get comfortable.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
You know, we have a new point guard.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Getting him where he can figure out who's where and
who does what best where and so he can get
to know his teammates better.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
And your practice is practice.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
We know the moves, we know who the shooters are,
who the shooters aren't.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
We work on this. We work on that.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
But you know, to be able to take our our
system if you will, and go play somebody else in
the month of October.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Eve been knowing the big picture.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
You know, a month from now, nobody's gonna remember this game,
but it's it's part of the process for us.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
It is crazy, though, Coach, that Anderson Garcia and the
rest of Aggies are coming to town. He's the guy
hit that three pointer that gave me a heart attack
when you guys were playing the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
The only thing I remember about that game, Matt, is
we won.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
There you go. I like that much better, much better.
That's cool. So tell me about your off season. I
know you've the recruiting folks love it. I know you're
trying to get some replacing Jamal who said a nice
start to his young NBA career. Got a lot of
returning guys coming back. You've got a couple of guys
changing uniform numbers and whatnot. Was this off season any
different than previous years? I mean, obviously the folks at

(02:02):
the Associated Press level were going to be being number
four in the country starting the season.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
No, not really.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
You know, our season ends, you know, because we've been
going to the Sweet sixteen or Final four, Elite eight, whatever.
Our season is ending later. So by the time you
get back, you're almost into April. And there's a NC
double a rule that when the season ends, the players
have to have a two week break, and we do

(02:31):
that regardless. I mean, it's not like we're gonna start
practicing right away, but by the time the two week
break comes, now you're backing up into final exams at
the end of April. Schools out early May, and so
we don't really work with our guys individually, position wise,
team wise till June. And by that time, you know,

(02:52):
the new guys are there. Milos Uzan, Mercy Miller, Chase
McCarty are the three new guys. And then we had
Jack and McFarlane red shirt last year, so he's he's
back in the swing of things, and Cordell Jefferson. So
we've got five new faces. We've got eight of our

(03:14):
top ten back, so you know, just trying to mix
them all together and see who fits where and who
can do this, who can do that, and pick up
our system and go play. You know, it's it's so
early in the season to be making any decisions, so
We're just gonna let a lot of guys play, you.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Know, the winning and losing this game. We'll see how
that goes.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
But I think it's more important just to get a
look at your team so you can evaluate your new guys.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Well, I love your non conference schedule. You have that
big event going on in Vegas, I guess Thanksgiving week,
but you know in a couple of weeks of the
TOTU Center, you guys are gonna play Auburn, so you're
not messing around with some top flight competition.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
That's was that one of the things.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
And again everybody's gonna say we try to balance best
we can, but I like what you guys have done,
at least from the non conference schedule wise.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Well, the the games in Vegas is strictly for all
the teams there.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
There's eight teams there.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
On our side of the bracket is Alabama, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Houston.
The other side is Oregon, Creighton, San Diego State, and
Texas A and M. So we'll play two teams on
our side and one team from the other side probably,
and then we have Auburn on November. I'm sorry, Yeah,
November nine is so worded. I couldn't believe I was

(04:25):
saying that. But November ninth, like last year, in the
same game at the Toyota Center, we played Texas A
and M. So you know, I think our schedule non
conference schedule was fine.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
I doubt I would be.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Doing the tournament in Vegas unless it was a huge
nil payday for US. But you know, we have twenty
conference games. That's a change. Last year we had eighteen.
This year we have twenty. So you've got twenty big
twelve games. So any coach's got common sense, it's not
going to load up on a non conference schedule when

(04:59):
you don't really need.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Well, it's still a very fierce skit together before you
guys get going to league play.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
LJ.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Carr you mentioned on your conference call a few minutes
ago at the media you want him to be even
more aggressive than he was a year ago. Would you
further explain that for us?

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Yeah, you know, l J is one of those kids,
Matt that makes the right play and I'm never ever
gonna change that mentality with him because that's what's makes
him special. But sometimes sometimes when he can create a
window for himself, either on a slidestep or step back
where he can get get a window for himself.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
I want him to shoot that ball. He's an outstanding shooter,
and he's a senior, and this is it for him.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
You know, he he's gonna be our leading scorer again.
I'd just like to see him a little a little
bit more aggressive. You know, we've got to see how
we're gonna play with Milos. That's that's that's a big
question mark for us. It's gonna get answered. It's just
gonna take time. He needs to play in games, and
that's why his early season schedule will be a challenge

(06:00):
for us. But you know, the great thing is is
that every game we play, I think you'll see, especially
Milos get more.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Comfortable with the uh, with the returners.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
You know, he played two years in the Big twelve,
so that's not gonna be a change for him. The
biggest change is he's got new teammates and that that
always that's always a little bit of a process.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
You didn't hit somebody, did you. We're hearing a bunch
of beeps in the background. Everything okay, But.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
With you No, I'm good. I'm good. That's not me.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
I want to make sure he didn't hit somebody, because
I don't need you filing insurance kid on my behalf.
That's what I'm saying. One kid I loved watching develop
last year was Jojo Tuckler and just all freshman big twelve.
Obviously the foot injury late near end of his season. Uh,
I'm gonna assume first and foremost he's close to being
a nine hundred percent right now. And what do you

(06:52):
expect him to make the next leap going from a
freshman year to a sophomore year, Because, as you'd also
mentioned the media earlier today, freshman got a do a
lot of observations and a lot of freshmen don't get
to play. He was able to give you some valuable
minutes for you last year.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yeah, I think Jojo JoJo's different. You know when he
when he goes in there, he just creates havoc. When
we lost him when we we played at Baylor last year,
that was that was his last game. So I think
we played six or seven games after that, and I
thought that's when our season went a little bit sideways

(07:27):
because we didn't have You don't just go get another
Jojo Jojo. Probably it was as good as any of
our post guys now j One Roberts role and his
skill sets different. Javier was a veteran. He really improved
as the season went on. But you know, we feel
like we have three starters up front with Jojo. Uh,

(07:47):
Javier and Jojo. I'm sorry, Jay One, Joe, Javier and Jojo,
the three Jays, those those three guys all can start,
and it really doesn't matter. You know, Javier and Jay
One will start. Javier has been banged up with a
little bit of an injury. He did not play last Saturday. Uh,

(08:08):
if he plays Sunday, he plays. If he does and
he doesn't, that game's not nearly as important as.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
The game on November fourth.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
I think going forward he'll he'll for sure play on
November fourth, but I'm not sure if that thing's bothering
him at all today or tomorrow. We'll just hold him
out because you know, the most important thing is not
the game Sunday.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
It is the game November fourth. That's when our season starts.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Last thing for you, this is big picture stuff because
I always value your opinion on so many things. I
don't know how well you know Tony Bennett, but universally
his resignation from Virginia I sent a lot of shock
waves throughout the sport, and some of them I think
it was because of the transfer portal in the NIL
and and I was telling my partner, I said, you know,
I don't want to see great coaches leave the game

(08:55):
for things that they can't control on the court. So
as you get in to another part of your career,
because you didn't deal with this fifteen or twenty years ago.
You dealt about recruiting kids and winning basketball games and
felling up buildings. You didn't have to worry about portals
and nils and whatnot. How do you now navigate these
waters as we're seeing some really good people leave the

(09:16):
industry because of the fact that so much of this
is done off the court. And frankly with a dollar bill.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
No, you're right, and it's an individual thing. Tony was
a good friend of mine, think three or four years ago.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
He called me.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
In the spring and said, you know, he'd like to
bring you know, Duke came to Fortita Center and we
had a closed door scrimmage with them. I think Tony
found out about that and said, well, he'd like to
do the same thing. He'd liked to bring Virginia. I said,
I don't want to scrimmage you, Tony, Let's play. So
that's how the Home and Home of Virginia was set up. Yeah,

(09:56):
the Nidel thing, the portal thing was it just happened.
I don't know any of us had a handle on it,
and now all of a sudden it went full board
with no guardrails. It's like a roller coaster without brakes.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
You know.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
We're just up and down, flying and trying to figure
things out as we go.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
But you know, the things that I enjoy most about
my job, Matt.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Is working with these young guys and helping them reach
their dreams and goals, and teaching them about the competitive
side of life and how basketball can help that, and
helping them grow and reached their dreams and chase their goals.
That hasn't changed for me, And I told someone at
media Day the other day, I refuse to let transfer

(10:44):
portal or the nil change who I am. I still
love what I do and that's not going to change.
I will evolve and change because you have to. I
still remember coaching before the shot clock, before the three
point line, when those things came in, it was like
Oh wow, that's messing up our game. Nobody remembers when

(11:05):
there wasn't a shot clock, Nobody remembers when there wasn't
a three point line, So now we have nil.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
It is what it is.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Figure it out, do the best you can with it,
and go forward. But the reasons I got into this
profession to begin with, I.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Still love outstanding message there, coach, Thanks for the time
is always best of luck, not only getting the guys
out there for a warm up on Sunday, but the
entire course of the season. And we'll see you in
the Fortuda Center on Sunday afternoon at four o'clock.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Look forward to seeing you, Matt. Thanks for having me on.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
You've got Kelvin Samson with us here. And if you'd
like to go to the game, Uahcougars dot com for
all your ticket needs for that Cougar's game against Texas
A and M on Sunday at four o'clock. And also
that big event at Tota Center on November the ninth,
that's going to be an eight thirty Star time as
a doubleheader, Rice place Florida State in the first game.
The second game will have Auburn versus the University of Houston.

(11:54):
It's the Battleground two K twenty four event.
