Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Shows.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Ten oh five.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Good morning, Houston, and welcome to a Monday edition. To
that Thomas show was Ross. That is Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
We're not gonna get it all at one song here,
so just one at a time.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
We'll do that.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
We'll play this out before we get two minutes off,
this sting the port Garth before we turn on.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
But we'll do it, he said, Okay, now.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
He said it.
Speaker 5 (00:32):
They had to get takeaways, and they do right out
of the gate first and goal de Troit, trying to
get back anyway.
Speaker 6 (00:39):
Discovery till the end zone comes down to Trent now
crown a zone Archer.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
Brown and in our sepday Cronton David's comes up with
the pick.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
From the nine, Saint Brown on the edge.
Speaker 5 (01:02):
Cut lookers up and around Saint Brown, touchdown Detroit Lions.
Right fat hitting kicked there earned the job at the
Lions from fifty eight inside.
Speaker 7 (01:14):
Of the game, baits justin Sathy upright ties it in twenty.
Speaker 8 (01:21):
For fifty two for the win.
Speaker 9 (01:24):
It is just good, just inside the upright.
Speaker 7 (01:30):
Jake Bates hometown hero, and the Lions have come all
the way back.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Tomball's, Jake bas Jimmy Butler's I do not give the
city Houston any run. You are all Tomball, Jake Freaking Baits,
UFL's Jake Bates, salesman Jake Bates, and the troit Lyons
(02:01):
clutch kicker j J. Bates. Meanwhile, Kimi Fairbarn's kick went
from northeast to southwestern about a fourteen on our breeze.
That's why you have closed the roof. Sometimes you hook it, man,
it has it's a hook. Let's go. This is why
I'm on a Texans fan. I don't want this. I
(02:21):
mean I can, I can discuss it, but I don't
have it. I don't have the emotional tie. It should
fall in line with most of what you're used to
in Houston sports. Yeah, I mean that's I mean, seriously,
I've been given in my life five slam a jama. Yes,
I've been given the Order's Buffalo game. Yes, I was
given Damian Lillard shot against the Rockets. Absolutely. I was
(02:42):
in nineteen Astros Yeah, I mean, oh yeah, oh seventeen,
the cheating scandal. I mean twenty three Astros. We got
a long history. Maybe, Yeah, I mean I don't need it.
And it wasn't necessarily a full chapter last night, but
it was at least a few pages. You get up
twenty three to seven. Yeah, you get five interception four Really,
(03:04):
I don't count that interception it happen. I can even
say three because one of them you ended up on
the one yard line. They put last down at the
one yard line. You're penned. I mean, most teams aren't
going to go ninety nine yards and score a touchdown
off of that. So you went three and out after
being pinned at the one yard line. Yeah, that also
wasn't the gift that the final line of turnover battle tells.
Speaker 10 (03:26):
No.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
But Jared Golf was terrible yesterday. But still at the
end of the day, let's just let's say we take
both of those away. That's still three turnovers from Jared Goff,
and he had thrown four all year long. You had
so many opportunities to capitalize, ye, so many opportunities to
go all in not be so conservative. And that's becoming
my biggest frustration with Tamiko Ryans in this regime on
(03:49):
Sundays is that they don't go for the gusto and
they didn't do it. You have the lions in your building.
You have them on the ropes and you let them
off the hook. The reality is this. Everybody's gonna start
wearing this. Okay, everybody's in their fields today because they're
trying to say, well, who takes the blame? Bobby Slowe's
gonna get fired.
Speaker 8 (04:10):
CJ. Stroude.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
It's not your fault to me go Ryans. Your defense
did a good job. Everybody that is associated with the
Texans that was on the field yesterday has to wear it.
Bobby Slowick and I'm sorry, CJ. Stroud Truthers. Your quarterback
wasn't good yesterday. There were moments that he was great,
(04:33):
but the silly interceptions in the second half, the inability
to move the team, and the fact is your offensive
line was okay. He's still got sacked four times, but
the run game was nonexistent. Joe Mixon could not find
any holes. It was terrible, embarrassing, but that's I mean,
(04:55):
we're kind of when Houston teams lose, they just don't
want to go down. Twenty one to seventeen and a
tough loss. It was. You know, let's let's watch Jared
Golf turn the ball over over and over and over
and over and over again. It's bad. It was a
bad loss, and that's why this team is going to
be out probably in the first round of the playoffs.
So why don't you I'm still feeling the second round.
(05:17):
Let's go second round. Okay, you know what you could
be Denver? Well, I mean, hell, Pittsburgh is playing unbelievable,
really big way yesterday. The Pittsburgh Steelers. I sleep on
Steers anymore. And Russell Wilson's good. I know, Russell Wilson's real.
I mean, I don't know what happened, but they're good.
They're first in the AFC North again. All right, so
let's get after it. Seven one three two one two
(05:39):
five seven ninety seven to one three two one two
five seven ninety If you want to place blame on
different people, good, just make sure your balance with it,
because it goes all the way around. This team is
nothing close to what they were in the first half.
They were the second half. And I don't want to
hear about Nico Collins not being able to play orwell Anderson,
(06:01):
you were up, you had twenty three first half points.
You were kicking the dog crap out of the Lions
in the first half. So don't give me the well
the guys were gone bit because you were doing just fine.
By the way, shout out to John Metchi, long forgotten
as a wide receiver. Best game is an NFL player,
hands down, c J Shrowd's quarterback rating sixty three. Whatever,
(06:24):
it was not good? Uh sixty four point two? Excuse
me now, I'm sorry. QBR thirty three. By the way,
that's on a scale of one to one hundred a zero.
Do that ESPN made that up, so I don't get
count pay up. But still, okay, if you're if your
QBR is thirty three, did you think you had a
great game? But if the scales was one to thirty five,
it's fantastic. Jared Goss was twenty nine. But that's the thing.
(06:48):
You had the arguably the best team in the football
on the ropes and you just you couldn't get it done.
You scores his zero points in the second half? How
did disheartening? How is this team I mean literally Jekyll
and Hyde in the first and second half of the
game games. And here's the here's the thing for Darlene
that you know she's running around wearing her bling last night. Okay,
you got Dallas coming up, you're gonna beat them. I
(07:09):
think you got two Tennessees coming up, you're gonna beat them.
I think you're gonna beat Miami. That's one, two, three,
four wins right there. You got another Jacksonville and what
the hell was that yesterday? Twelve to seven? Oh yeah,
so that's they that's five more wins. They're gonna get
the ball back and then Travon Walker loses his mind
and gets a penalty, so they could have won that game.
You're gonna go five and two the rest of the
(07:29):
way probably, okay, and that's gonna put you at eleven
and six. Kind of what you thought they were going
to be. That was my preseason predictions. Could if you
hit it, you hit it, we'll see eleven and six.
You're gonna host the first round playoff game against probably
either Denver, the Chargers, or Pittsburgh. You could lose to
any of those teams easily. You win that game, I
mean it's it seems decent at home. Usually you're gonna
(07:50):
lose in the second round the playoffs. All those teams
have a positive point differential, a negative. The calendar is set, okay,
because this team is showing a pattern. And by the way,
enough of the team, enough with throwing up the hs,
enough with bracking about your uniforms. Score some points in
the second half of football games. Yeah, it ain't much.
Put your ages down and put your points up. Is
(08:11):
that what you're saying, Matt h Just down points up.
I like that. Burger's down field goals down, long touchdown
plays up. That'd be nice. Seven one three, two, one
two five seven niney if you want to get in,
let's go. I want to hear y'all. Let your spout off.
Take as much time as you want. We're here till
two o'clock today. It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
(08:32):

Speaker 11 (10:13):
What more?
Speaker 12 (10:15):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety I.
Speaker 8 (10:22):
Didn't get gassed.
Speaker 13 (10:23):
I just think, you know, they got some runs on
us when we did this at the edge, we weren't
triggering fast enough. At the second level. We just kind
of we stalled a little bit there defensively. I think
it was nothing you know, about being tired or anything.
It's just us consistently executed. And that's what you know,
I believe in just out executing our opponent. And you know,
(10:45):
when things got tight there at the end and the
second half, just like we didn't execute. We had multiple
opportunities right to get off the field, but we didn't
make those plays.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Wait at Tamaico does give us a good rundown out
of the game we just watched. So I mean he's
not seeing two different games. I mean, I mean, under
the latest edition of how can you Lose That Game?
(11:17):
You lost that game oh, first, we could also we
also do need to say the Lions are really good.
The Lions are the best team in the NFC. If
anybody can withstand five turnovers and win a game, it'd
be the best team in the NFC. I expected the
Texans to lose that game. You expected them to lose
by double digits. We all, I mean there we thought
(11:38):
maybe they were going to get their doors completely blown off,
and they did. Nico was declared unavailable for the Gago
Collins was out. I just was like, how are they
going to score any points? And that really did come
to fruition. I mean, they scored their first touchdown on
a short field. Then after that they really only had
one sustained touchdown drive and that was at the end
of the first half. When that is when I mean CJ.
(12:01):
Stroud looked like a freaking maestro out there when they
got that second touchdown to go up twenty three to seven.
And that was after that was after the Lions got
the ball with under two minutes to go and they
were just basically running it out. I was like, oh
my gosh, the Texans got them shook. They're trying to
get out of here. And then they went down.
Speaker 6 (12:21):
CJ.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Shroud made a couple of great throws that on that drive,
including that that touchdown throw to John Metchi. That's special.
That's that's a special throw. And I'm sitting there saying,
they're gonna freaking win this game. CJ. Stroud is locking in,
the the O line is playing good enough. Jared Goff
is off tonight. They are going to win this game.
(12:42):
And then they did not score another point and haven't
scored a second half point or touchdown since the New
England game yes against the New England Patriots, who are
who are not good, who, by the way, beat the
Bears yesterday and Chicago imploding right now. Well, that's that's
their issues. Unbelievable to their Matt Caleb Williams just can't
(13:05):
get it done. I'm going to Chicago this weekend as
a matter of what. Yeah, well that's what you're gonna
be hearing. And the Bears said that I ain't going
to know a soldier field first fall. That stadium middle
like the soldier fields that I looked at when I
was a kid going up and I got me a
dog and a pearl there. I was not a pearl.
It's the old English. No, no, not old deal. I
guess you could drink oldie there. Old style. That's an
(13:26):
old style beard are in Chicago. Old style is not good.
But it's it's Chicago. Yeah, it's it's like having a
lone star in Texas. Yeah, you know you're drinking because
you're from there. Okay, But here in Houston, we're upset.
We got our own problems. I mean, but again, but
(13:46):
but it's eleven.
Speaker 8 (13:47):
This is a lot.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Get ready, it's eleven and six. Put it down. You
win eleven. If you if you thought this team was
eleven and six before the season started, you're happy. Yeah.
I was hoping that the expectations were that they were
going to be pushing into the elite, and then then
that's just not that's not happening at all. I'm not
seeing that at all. And I'm seeing them. I'm seeing
(14:09):
when they have the Lions on the ropes, they're playing
for field goals. They're not being aggressive, they're running the ball,
they're they're slamming Joe Mixon into the center of the
line for one yard games, and I just they're stripsacking
their own quarterback. They're not into In twenty twenty four NFL.
(14:30):
Just look out the flip on the other side, Dan Campbell,
you know that he's gonna roll the dice. He's gonna
go for every fourth down. They're gonna be aggressive. They're
they're saying, it's it's not necessarily an aggressive, it's confident.
They're saying, we're gonna punch you in the mouth. We're
gonna get this fourth and one and get this fourth
and two, and you can't stop us. And what you
just described they didn't do in the late second quarter
is admitted fix. I mean, it was like I was
(14:51):
watching somebody. I was watching the Texans running a drill
one sixty left to go. He two run plays. I
was stunned. I was done, what Detroit, that's not you.
You have all these receivers, you got two great running backs,
you've got golf who's having an amazing season, and you're
doing these maybe Pammy. I mean, that was gifting another
chance for the Texans to score before the half, in
(15:13):
which they've done that a lot so far this year.
I thought all the stars were aligning. Did Troit got
uber conservative light second quarter? You took advantage, you had
the mojo, and then you come out in the third
quarter until the interception, and obviously they get it right back,
but they get it right back, but at the one
one yard line it was it was a bad throw
there from c J. Stroud, the one to Tank Dell.
(15:33):
I mean, look, you get jumped, the corner jumps you
on an out route. That happens. It's bad. It shouldn't,
but that's NFL football. The other guys are talented, they're
good too, but I mean, just completely lofting that ball
to Tank Dell for that second interception while he is
in a he looks like Jake Myers in center field
and nobody's around there. I think Chris Collins was like, oh,
(15:53):
this is gonna be a lot uh oh, the whole
stadium you can hear it go and then it's a ah.
It's very deflating, very deflating, that second interception. And CJ.
Stroud after the game, I gotta be better. I gotta
make more plays, all that type stuff. But yeah, and
by the way, it's okay to criticize c J. Stroud, Yeah,
because guess who's c J. Stroud should be criticizing himself
(16:15):
and he is. He's not waking up this morning going
man if I had an offensive line or man, if
Bobby's lowan could cost some more creative plays, that same
sort of activity in the first half came in. I
don't know. Maybe there is a mindset in a in coaches,
whether it's his offensive coordinator, whether it's the players, whether
(16:35):
it's the head coach. They just can't put the foot
on the throat and finished teams off unless it's the
New England Patriots and Drake May making his first start.
That's it. Yeah, that's it. And I think that is
if I have a criticism of Demico Ryans' coaching style,
I think he does a great job Monday through Saturday,
(16:59):
great leader of men and all that stuff, but a
little bit too conservative. Whether it's Bobby Slowick under instruction
for Demiico Ryans or as well, I don't care who
it is. I don't know who it is, and but
it's just too a little too conservative for my taste.
Maybe it's too much reliance on Kymie Fairbran. And I'm
not kidding. I yeah, I think they're like, you know what,
we're within sixty, let's get let's get Kymie Faber in
(17:20):
this kick, and you know what, sometimes you know you're
gonna miss a fifty eight yarder. It happens. I'm not
mad at Kymie fairber No, he it would have been
nice if he could have made a fifty eight yarder,
But you can't expect that. That's too much. Yeah, but
he's made so money this year that it's like, well,
get him, get him to the forty, and he's gonna
be golden. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety
(17:42):
This is a Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We have
to tell the truth today at eleven thirty. While I
will give you some of my sports takes, one of
which I will believe a couple of mine will not,
we've got the news at noon. We've got to believe
it or not. And we have what I believe to
be in an aggravated fan base of the Texans and LSU.
What the hell was that this weekend? Absolutely an embarrassing
(18:04):
performance at home. Oh you're talking about their fans throwing
stuff on the field. Well, that's becoming, uh, that's becoming
the new the new norm in sports. Well, you know
they say about Texas, Matt, what starts here changes the world.
Clearly started started, and then we have an ad getting
going on the podium mic after a game and ripping
the officials for a Paul Frankly that was correct, and
(18:27):
then the Big twelve's like, shut your bumb ass up
and get your check book outs. We're gonna find your
ass seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety
seven one three two, one two five seven ninety ten
to twenty eight join us here on the Matt Thomas Show,
the Ross here on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 14 (18:40):
Ninety You're not going to point fingers or you know, one,
I pointed myself and then two, you know, got to
just move on from this and to understand we just
took one of the best football team in best NFL
teams to you know the wire, but we really should have,
you know, put them away after the first half. So
you know, I's really on on offense. You gotta be better.
Speaker 15 (19:03):
I got to be better.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
I mean, you cannot point fingers, but you probably could
and should. I mean, what do you want? What's the
end game? Are we all just trying to be nice?
I mean, what was a team meeting for? By the way,
great job by John Alexander, a legit member of the
media going to final story about the Texans. Good for
him to our Again, team meetings typically don't work, but
(19:28):
at least it makes you feel better. Well, it got
Joe Mixon voted captain, and it got them to within
three points of the Lions. Maybe if there wasn't a
team meeting, they would have lost by twenty five. Matty
is that is that?
Speaker 8 (19:40):
What it is?
Speaker 3 (19:40):
By the way, and we and we kind of joke
around about Vegas, and my philosophy about Vegas is they're
right some of the time, but more times than not
they're not right because again, you've got blowouts, you've got
teams that lose. Vegas is there to inspire people to
go bet on these things. But sometimes they've got some
good people that occur are creating lines and point spreads,
(20:04):
and sometimes they really really nail them. And last night
they absolutely nailed it. Texans were a three and a
half point dog. They lost by three. The what was
are over under the forty nine and a half forty
nine depending on where you looked and the final score total.
The final total was forty nine. So if you're if
you're in Vegas today, you are fistba because you've got
(20:24):
a lot of action going because people are like, man,
they know what they're doing here. The question is what
side you bet on? That's the most important thing. They
don't really care whose I am. No, they make good lines,
they do pretty good. Yeah, but that was weird. I
was in Detroit on Saturday and bet on a lot
of college football, and ironically enough, some of my bad
beats were by one point or less. Happens, Yeah, it happens.
(20:49):
That's why I probably shouldn't be betting on sports because it
is aggravating. But you didn't do any research, right normally,
That's what I said, you're eighty percent. My grandiose, non
research bet of the night was I had the over
in the Maryland Oregon game. It was fifty seven and
a half. Fifty seven was the final number. Oh, so
(21:10):
I lost that by it. And again remember if I
would have taken the under, I would have won. So
it's it's depending on what side you're on. But it
was it was really bizarre how close that game got.
I took Florida State giving the nine to Rice, and
I think Florida State won by eight. On Saturday in
college basketball the doubleheader downtown, So what happened in the
(21:33):
other game they called it off. Are you sure they
just said it's a no play? Okay, I thought that
was the Coronation Auburn there they had flight issues and
I didn't fight. The team is fighting on the flight. Yes,
it's going to be the Cougar's cruising to victory. Did
I didn't catch the final score they lost. Oh, it's
(21:53):
early season. It has got a nice early season testing.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
This is the master.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Frank Fischell of ESPN said it was a final four
game in November. You don't get those very often. Love
that they can get back and regroup, and I mean,
it's not like it's a league play loss. No, the
Cougars will be better for it as they go along.
And I'm guessing this week the Cougars have a complete
puffcake of an opponent, so they'll get fat and happy
off of them. Yeah, that's good, all right. Seven one three, two,
(22:16):
one two five seven out of seven one three two,
one two five, seven nine zero. So let me ask
you this because I really don't know the question because
I've never been on the other side of a curtain
on an NFL team. I mean, realistically, the lowest of
lois Hangingford is win in doubt. Blame the coaches, Blame
(22:38):
the instructors. You know, we have people that call during
baseball season. It said that you should fire the third
base coach when they mentioned it's a pitching coach and
vice versa. How much do you, in your mind, Houston,
should really Bobby Sloyd be wearing on this? Does he
all this? I mean, ask you this, and I'll give
you one more preface and then I'll let you've answer that.
Does he all of a sudden become this amazing play
caller in the first half and then he he takes
(23:01):
the first four pages of that Plague sheet and goes,
I already use that stuff. I'm not going to do
it again. Where does the blame go? Because I'm of
the belief, nine times out of ten, it's about the
performers on the field as compared to the coaching. Now,
sometimes you can have some brain scratching moments. You can
have why do they call this in a situation knowing
the clock and time and distance? But I mean, is
(23:26):
it just too It's just too easy to say Bobby
Slug's got to be replaced. This is terrible. He doesn't
know what he's doing. I don't think if he gets
here that everything is all of a sudden going to
turn herround, or gets they get rid of him, that
all of a sudden everything is going to turn around.
I think he's in a tough position because he tries
to establish the run on first down, and I think
a lot of the people's biggest criticism of Bobby Slowick
(23:48):
is that he runs the ball too much.
Speaker 8 (23:50):
Well.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
Number one, that could be coming from Demico Ryans, because
defensive coaches like to establish the run. Number two. That's
the Shanahan Tree philosophy, and that is the and Bobby
slog is a branch off of that tree. You establish
the run, you go with the bootlegs and the play action,
and then you drive down the ball down the field
(24:12):
with that. That's just how it goes. That's that coaching philosophy,
and that's that's ingrained into Bobby Sloak. Number Three, if
we went the other way, if Bobby Sloak didn't try
to establish the run, and he tried to chuck the
ball fifty five time, predictable. It's very predictable. And then
what we say, we would say, Oh my god, CJ.
Stroud's under pressure every time he goes back there, he's
(24:34):
getting killed, he's getting sacked. Why are we throwing so much?
You've got to establish the run, That's what we would
be saying. And then when he does throw on first down,
how about out of the gates. It's twenty three to seven,
it's the third quarter, and you in the predictable old
Bobby Sloak, you think that he's gonna run on first down.
(24:55):
They throw on first down and c. J. Stroud throws
a pick. So oh, it's like he's damned if he doesn't.
Damned if he doesn't. In my opinion, that's why I said,
it's it's very hard for me to do this because
it's everybody's responsibility. Is there a lack of killer instinct
on this football team? Clearly, even in the Buffalo game,
(25:16):
they had to hold on for dearly. I mean, think
of their losses and their wins this year. How many
have been by one score games, how many of them
have relied on Kymie favor and how many of them
relied on a late game execution. And because they've had
these larger leads, the killer instinct isn't there? But you
when you're up two scores, was it three Noe was scored.
(25:40):
Halftime's twenty three to seven, so sixteen so two scores.
I went to two point conversions. And you have an
elite running back who's having a fantastic season, Why wouldn't
you make to try to get Joe mix it involved
loosen it up at least so you don't become nearly
as predictable of a team that just throws the ball
every single down. He ran it twenty five times, he
(26:00):
got forty six yards. I mean they tried to establish
the run and CJ. Stroud threw two bad picks and
like I said, that was out of the gates on
third in the third quarter. I think the whole world
thought they would run on first down. There they threw
and it was a pick and interception going the other way.
It's just everything went wrong. We can blame, you know,
(26:21):
Fairburn for the kicking. Like I said, I don't want
to get too much blame to him, but he missed
the kick. Their guy made his fifty eight yarder. Your
guy missed his fifty eight yarder. You could call that
the difference in the game. We also didn't talk about
that pass interference. It wasn't called at the end of
the game. And I'm not saying that's why. Well, I
say you add it all up, the c. J. Stroud turnovers,
the conservative game management, the bad play calling, the kicker
(26:48):
missing his kick, and then the bad referee. You should
add it all up. But you know what, though, as
you say that, and we're talking about this in a big,
grandiose frame of mind, here, there's beneficiating absolute ramp. If
you get a really well officiated game, It's like going
to a steakhouse and getting the biggest cut of meat
and paying for a smaller cut because you're just you
(27:08):
can't you cannot expect officials to help you out. They're
going to screw up calls. They're screwing up calls in
college football. They're screwing up calls in pro football. They're
missing pass interferences rossy, they're missing face mask, they're missing
off sides. Officially, officiating in the twenty twenty four year
(27:29):
for football, maybe and talking about college and pro is
probably at its worse in a very long period of time,
which makes no sense, because the technology is better. You
are hiring younger officials, You are trying your best to
open it up to recruit people to come do this.
The sports, the world of sports just can't the speed,
the athleticism just can't handle regular old human beings going
(27:52):
Monola mono with these guys. Yeah, I'm not blaming the
referees necessarily. It's always a factor. It always is. But
it was a miss call. But also you can't necessarily
expect to get that. It's it's like the last ten
seconds of an NBA game. You somebody's got to get hacked,
somebody's gotta get like suplexed for there to be a
foul call. And it's like that in the and then
(28:13):
those crucial moments in an NFL game, and it was
the right call was a pass interference, but having that
being a no call if it was flipped on the
other side, or it had been like, hey, third and four,
you gotta make a play. That wasn't that that was
TICKI tak So all right, So what do you I mean?
We can't be totally surprised that anybody. I shouldn't say,
(28:34):
this is tough Friday. You and I we didn't think
the Texans were gonna win this football game. No, so
you and I personally aren't shocked by this, But we
also didn't think that they were gonna get gifted four.
We'll just call it four. Inner fess they you won
the turnover battle by two, and you had the opportunity
to seize the moment. And if the Lions came in
(28:55):
there and Jamier Gibbs rushed for one hundred and twenty
and two touchdowns and David Montgomery went for one hundred
and ten in a touchdown and they beat you down physically,
I would have been able to accept that. But to
get up the way that you did, to have Jared
Goff tried to hand the game to you on a
silver platter and for you to say, no, thanks, I'm good,
that's what's frustrating. Seven one three, two, one, two, five,
(29:16):
seven to ninety. Will a Dallas win next Monday night
make you feel better? Because you're gonna get that. I mean,
the Cowboys were embarrassed yesterday. Uh, Cooper Rush was awful,
Trey Lance was terrible. I mean, the entire Cowboys team
was pathetic. And so you're gonna catch them at a
time where they're probably gonna be firing their head coach
in the not too distant future. It's just that bad.
(29:37):
By the way, Dak Prescott likely out for the year
after having his hamstring surgically repaired, so off of his bone.
That must have been a serious pull. Not great, and
shout out to our good friend James Jones. He was
on some Fox show or something yelling about how uh
Dak Prescott needed to be that back in there with
his boys and he's being soft for getting out of
the game. Who is James Jones? James Joe, I guess
(29:58):
it's is it the former wide receiver. He's somewhere on
Fox and I saw it on Twitter. He was like screaming,
like Dak is being soft. He needs a big back
there with his boys. Like okay, Well turns out he's
on IR and his hamstring was off his bones. Shut up.
I might be something for Wednesday. So where are you feeling?
What are you feeling right now? Texans fans? I mean Ross,
and I'm kind of just giving you our thoughts over
the first forty five minutes of the show. What do
you got? Seven one three two one two five seven
(30:21):
ninety seven one three two one two five seven. Nunty,
are these correctable mistakes? Ross? We got a pattern growing here.
We got a pattern growing of a team that doesn't
know how to put the throat the foot on the
throat of an opponent. Is it the same old Texans
in and they turn this around? I don't think so. Thanks.
(30:41):
I mean, I'm I'm just being honest. I could lie.
I could throw my hes up and throw your h's up.
Seven one three, two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninty ten forty five.
We take you till two o'clock today. It is a
Monday edition About Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk
(31:01):
seven ninety.
Speaker 12 (31:03):
More Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
Ten fifty one. It is about Thomas Show at Ross
seven one three two one two five seven nine is
zero seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Sports Talk seven ninety is your home for the Rockets
and the Astros. Rockets in Action tonight will take on
the Washington Wizards. Used to coming off a win against
Detroit last yesterday late afternoon in Detroit, Houston, coming off
(31:40):
a win against Detroit, I know one out of three
ain't bad. We haven't said that whole lot these days.
We'll take it by the way I was told by
my engineer in Detroit yesterday that they had started a
new chant in Red Wings and Pistons games that had
happened during last year's playoffs and the Lions that out
of nowhere, people will just start chanting Jared Golf at
(32:04):
the Red Wings and Pistons games. Ok, it's kind of
a bit. They didn't do it yesterday. Oh you were
you disappointed? Well, I was like, and she was like,
it's gonna be coming sometime sooner, and it never came.
Maybe they got they had a feeling he was gonna
throw five interceptions. Yeah he was. He was absolutely terrible
yesterday and you let him leave town with a win
and you let him off the hook. And that super
(32:24):
fast runner for the Detroit Lions, Jamier Gibbs, Yeah, I
mean how many times did Tarico and Collins were say
this guy can fly, this guy's the fastest guy on
the planet. I mean, yeah, I get it, Broh, I
know he's fast. He was okay yesterday in nineteen for
seventy one, that's less than four yards of cares. That's
not great, not great, It's okay. Yeah, the defense did
(32:45):
a pretty good job. Overall, defense was significantly better than
the offense. It's crazy that you gave hup twenty six
points and we're saying that, but I mean against this
Lions team, they can drop fifty. They dropped fifty on
the Titans, although that was also turnover driven, but yeah, yeah,
seven one. They also didn't have Will Anderson. You hadn't
(33:06):
you name Will Anderson. In the first half, you were fine,
you found let me tell you. You were throwing your answers up.
You were loving on the uniforms, you were looking for
cal you were looking for Hannah to give her a
hug at halftime. Oh that's I'm sorry this members of
the fake media in Houston that was doing that. I'm sorry.
I was not with the fans. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
(33:26):
two five seven Ninetie Nigel on the Matt Thomas Show,
Ross Needgel, the floor is yours. Good morning.
Speaker 16 (33:32):
Hey, how are you guys doing today? Okay, Well, I
think you know, if it would have been a close
game from from beginning to end, that Texan fans would
have a little bit more to be upset about on
that missed pass interference call. But if you guys, I
mean it kind of balanced out. If you guys remember
the drive right before that that Detroit had. They were
(33:55):
like third and five or thirty six, and the uh
Tex defensive tackle came in and kind of left his
feet and hit Golf in the side of the head.
And you know, they didn't call late hit to the
quarterback or blow to the head, which would have given
them a first down and put them right around midfield.
So that's another drive that would have been going for
(34:16):
Detroit as well. So I mean, the calls really kind
of balanced out right there because both teams lost the
possession off of that deal. The problem is, you get
five interceptions, you should buy law of averages at least
luck into a field goal somewhere. There Just no points
at all in the second half is just inexcusable.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Yeah to me, and I as a broadcaster sometimes it's
hard to do this, But I'm not a big officiated blamer.
I'm just not These things tend to equal out. I
know some people don't want to believe that, but they
just do. There are as many calls that will go
for your team as they go against. The results are
you didn't score anything in the second half, just could
(35:01):
not move the football. Detroit's defense is good and thank
you for the phone call. Need are good to hear
from me. But you were able to do what you
wanted to in the first half. Hell, you got John
Metchi involved, You got Dalton Schultz involved, Tank Dell was
finding open seams.
Speaker 8 (35:15):
C J.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
Stroud had enough time to throw. Although again ROSSI he
felt again a lot of pressure yesterday kids get sacked
four times, but stood that I was able to put
up a pretty I mean, you had to have felt
good the way you played the first thirty. I just
don't think Dan Campbell's halftime adjustments all of a sudden changed.
(35:36):
There was a philosophical indirect change. And how the Texans
came out of that locker room. It wasn't because all
of a sudden Detroit through new schemes at you. They
just they couldn't have no And I mean, uh, second
half adjustments are kind of an old trope. That's adjustments
are happening literally after the first drive in NFL games
these days are like in the midst of the first
(35:58):
run of drives, which are adjusting at all times in
the NFL. So it's not it's a bit of an
oversimplication to say, yeah, the Texans just aren't just aren't
adjusting properly at halftime. You don't even have all that
much time in a halftime. You have to get all
the team together, you have to go in there. You're
in there for like I don't know, seven eight minutes
if then you got to come out because you got
(36:20):
to get ready for the second half. So at the
end of the day, it's just the to me, I
think part of it is the way that the Texans
are conservative, conservatively coached. When they get leads, they go
to protect those leads at all costs. It's like it
(36:40):
would be like an NBA team getting a ten point
lead in the third quarter and then they're running down
the shot clock to one second every time it's just two.
It's premature. They don't put their foot on the gas.
They don't just go there to try to score more points.
If they have a ten point lead in the third quarter,
they're like, Okay, we're gonna try to win by ten.
They don't try to win by twenty four. That's just
how they play to me in my mind that I
(37:02):
just see it too often, and I'm watching the Titus
Howard stripping of the ball by his own By Howard,
I mean unbelievable. Titus, What was he doing trying to
grab the ball? Titus, Come on, Titus. The defensive line sucks.
And by the way, thank you very much Nickosaria for
doing absolutely nothing of the trade deadline. Hey, thanks again,
(37:23):
thanks again for giving us word salad earlier this week.
I hope you enjoyed watching that. They were ready to
roll with Jared Patterson and Juwe Scruggs, the line shake up.
Cej so felt the pressure. But again that and to
their defense, every quarterback feels pressure. They're in a game
that you're gonna watch a quarterback. Oh man, I was
sitting back there. I had a chance for lunch, I
got a room service, I door dashed. No, that's pressures
(37:45):
by the NFL. It was better this week, but it
wasn't great. They lost the Jets game because of pressure.
They didn't lose this game because of pressure, No, not
at all. All right, more of you on the line, Richard,
Jim and Jacob will get to you one two three,
starting the second hour of The Thomas Show with Ross
seven one three two one two five seven, Nutty seven
one three two one two five seven. NINTI. We take
(38:07):
this program today until two o'clock. We got to tell
the truth in one half hour. The News at noon
coming up, which will feature I sent to Connors something
that I thought was interesting about uh a coach's brutal
honesty and how he handles getting himself ready for a
football game. We'll have to play that for you coming
up with the News at noon. Rockets with a win
as well. LSU fan, what the hell was that? Is
(38:30):
Alabama still rushing an anotherother one hundred and fifty yards
here on the ground against you? That was embarrassing. You
have eighty thousand, I mean basically junior high level educated
people in one facility and you get your ass kicked.
Texas by the way, Oh my gosh, beat up on
those Gators because your horns up. Ross suck at Gators.
(38:54):
That wasn't even a game.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
It was bad.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
That's fine. I have a friend who's a Florida grad
who's been talking about the for like the last twenty years.
So he got some texts on Saturday. All right, second
hour next on seven ninty.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Eleven o three on Sports Chalk SEVENINTI it is painful,
ROSSI all the NFL network ESPN showing the did Jared
graffordly throw that many interceptions? They really turn over that much?
And who is this kicker from nearby Tombaugh By the way,
those field goals, Oh my god, the second one knuck
them both in. That was maximum humans Houston sports pain maximum.
(39:38):
It's almost like part of the football got some of
the yellow paint off of the goalposts. At least the
Kymie Fairburn one. You're like, oh, he hooked that. You
knew immediately, like, oh, that's not going in. But they
snuck or Jake Baits sneaking both of those in tomballs
Jake baits with a kiss. Ough not great. And they
(40:00):
about this at halftime. We were in flight coming back
from Detroit and they were up twenty three at the
half and uh, twenty three six or twenty twenty three,
eighty three seven, twenty three seven. I'll get to score, right,
that's fine. Uh with a second, we were tuk on
the plane. This will be the signature win. I don't
care if it's at home or not. Detroit is a
legitimate NFC title contender. Detroit has won huge road games.
(40:23):
Detroit has beaten everybody up except one team. Uh, this
would have been the Okay, the team meeting worked. The
uniforms are cool, the roof is open, the vibe is good.
Energy is a place where teams can't come in and win.
Statement game. Yeah, statement game and didn't get what it
should have been. Yeah, didn't get it. You had you
had them on the ropes. They're running the clock out
(40:45):
with two minutes to go. Then you go out there
and and CJ. Stroud orchestrates a masterful drive to get
you up twenty three to seven. And then the second
half happened. And here's the thing about the Texans, especially
in first half of these games, is they're taking advantage
of some stupidity. There have been at least I want
to say, three touchdowns this year or field goals. The
(41:06):
Texans have scored in the final minutes of quarters in
this before the half because of peculiar play calls or
weird use of time. I thought Dan Campbell's or whoever
is running their offense of the Lions, Johnson Ben Johnson's right, who,
by the way, is being probably highly highly regarded than
Bobby Slowan is today. But the way they called the
plays with a minute fifteen left to go, and I
(41:27):
think they had at least two of not all, three
of their timeouts. Was highly confusing. They gifted the Texans
and extra possession, and to the Texans credit, they got
it and they scored. That's that's what I I thought
they were going to win. And the first half of
you were after John Metchi was doing this thing. You're thinking, hey, Nico,
take your time, bra you're good. Tank Dell's getting out there.
(41:52):
It's the tenth quarterback in the Super Bowl era to
throw five interceptions in a game and win it. See,
this is why this is a prime example of why
I don't like Jared Goff wins the game. It's it's okay,
(42:12):
well it says and win. Actually, never mind, I thought
it said and win because it's like Jared Goff won
this game. No, the Lions won the game because Jared
gov didn't do a whole lot of help. Quarterbacks getting
all the credit for the wins and losses. I just
I just don't like that. Yeah, no, And but that's
what that's what sports broadcasting has done. I know, it's
all the quarterback and it's like, you know CJ. Stroud
(42:33):
wearing it. I mean he wasn't good in the second half.
He deserves some of the responsibility. I mean, I don't
think anybody that's a key skill position player doesn't deserve
some criticism of this. And it's okay to criticize him
because again you can, so you're allowed to do it.
It's it's nothing personal. It's performance based, and I guarantee
(42:55):
you c J. Stroud in his car driving home is like,
why don't I throw that ball like I threw it?
Why don't I miss it? What am I doing? What
are am I am? I am I forcing my hand?
I think part of the issue is he's losing confidence
in his offensive line. I think he's rushing throws. I think,
as I've mentioned this before on multiple ocasions, I think
his feet aren't set. I think he's skittish, and that's
(43:18):
a byproduct of not trusting the people around you. I
think there was some of that in the Jets game.
I didn't really see it much here. I thought he
was really confident and cool, and on both of those
throws he I mean he was maybe I would have
to go back and look, he was maybe under a
little pressure on that Dell throw, but the first throw
he was just a rhythm throw. It was just like
a quick drop and then boom, get it on and out.
(43:39):
And then he just didn't put enough zip on it
and then in the corner jumped around. And I'm watching
some of his throws at Jared Goffin throwing dead ducks.
These things have got there, like ephis pitches. His hand
was terrible yesterday. So I mean, I don't think I
don't I'm not gonna put either of those interceptions from
from c J. Stroud to getting happy feet or any
(44:00):
of that stuff. But I think it's I think it's
a byproduct of it. I think there is there. There is.
The confidence level on his offensive line is nothing close
to what it was last year. And last year it
was bad too, but he was able to overcome that.
I think he I'm just gonna say he had. He
just had made some two really bad throws. It happens.
Speaker 8 (44:19):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
Let's go to Richard in League City at eleven o
eight on seven one. Richard, thanks for holding Good morning.
Speaker 8 (44:25):
Hey, good morning.
Speaker 17 (44:26):
So I got a couple of things I want to
say about the Texans. But first I really hope there
were a few Texas fans enjoying their afternoon and they
had the TV on the Rockets and they saw Jaalen
put a little party hat on Kate Cunningham because that
was a stick duck and if you were a Rockets fan,
you wouldn't be sad today. And so, uh, get on
(44:49):
the get on the wagon. So what I want to
say about the Texans, so I'm my glass half full,
is that we know we know CJ. Stroud is a
franchise quarterback. There's no question about that. That question is answered.
We know Mixon is the right guy. We know we've
got the right head coach. So I'm still bullish on
our future. But where where I think it's going on?
(45:10):
And Ross you talk about kind of playing.
Speaker 8 (45:12):
Aggressively and then conservatively.
Speaker 17 (45:14):
The way I talk about it, it's like you're playing
to win until you're playing not to lose. And I
feel like like last year, no one had any expectations
for that team. They were like playing with house money.
They had rooky quarterback, rookie coaches, pretty much rookie everything
with a sad sack franchise, and they came out and
they overperformed and became the NFL Darling Team of the Year,
(45:36):
and we love them and we expect great things for them.
But this year they're picked as one of the five
teams to go to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 8 (45:42):
And I don't think that.
Speaker 17 (45:44):
I think they're overthinking it because because they seem to
play better when nothing is expected from him, or when
CJ Is splashed out of the pocket, often they just
feel more intuitive. But my feeling is they're overthinking it.
They're trying to play as if they are the Super
Bowl contending whatever choice, and they don't know how to
(46:10):
They don't know how to take that pressure and play loose.
They don't know how to play loose under that pressure.
Speaker 3 (46:15):
Well you know what the answer is, though. The response
to that is, well, guess what when you're considered an
elite team in the AFC and you are considered a
Super Bowl contender, Richard, don't you agree that pressure that
comes with that. I mean, that's if you want to
be a big boy and you want to step up,
you have to be able to adhere to having teams
(46:37):
scout you properly and not overlook you and get ready
for you. And so I want that from any of
the teams that I watch follow a fan of. I
want them to be able to say you know what,
it's tight, it's a competitive matchup, it's a quality team.
We can get past that. I don't want to be
just overlooked, because you know what you're gonna be. If
you're overlooked all the years. You're gonna win nine games
(46:57):
every year, and you're going to be winning the Wald
Carter maybe Division once in a while, and then you're
gonna be out in the first round. And we said, well,
this team only won nine games, what do we expect.
I think the expectation levels for a Texan fan base
in this town, rightfully so, was significantly higher going into
this year because of what they did last year.
Speaker 17 (47:15):
Well, I don't and I agree with everything you're saying that,
but I think my core point is just this is
growing pains. Like we have all the pieces to warrant
the pressure of being a championship contender. I think the
thing we forgot, and I think they forgot, is that
these are the growing pains.
Speaker 8 (47:34):
You have to go through.
Speaker 17 (47:35):
I don't know. I'm not enough of an NFL fan
to know if Mahomes went through a period like this
or Brady ever went through theory like this.
Speaker 18 (47:45):
I know so.
Speaker 3 (47:48):
Well, yeah, Mahomes didn't. Sorry sadly, but he's also probably
on the doorstep of the Hall of Fame already. But
did you have a question for I'll let you run, Richard.
That's it, Okay, you got it. Thanks for the phone call, Apprecia,
good comnversation. I mean it's yeah, the temperatures turned up.
It is yeah, no, this is it's not even necessarily
(48:10):
like address rehearsal. Like you you've got put on five
primetime games, and there's three in a row right here.
This is the network said, you know what, Texans, we
see you, you're making waves. We're gonna put you on
the national stage. And they are falling flat on their face.
They're getting destroyed by the New York Jets. They're getting
up on the Detroit Lions and then cratering in the
second half. They're looking like they're just not ready for
(48:33):
prime time. And that's what is boiling down to right now.
They're looking like this not a bad team, but just
not an elite team. What what what? What incentive does
NBC have to say we need the Texans on Sunday
night again, after after the way that they've been playing
in these big games. I don't even know what the
ratings are. Give, sure the ratings are good. Yeah, they
(48:53):
would rather go to any number of other teams. You've
been begging for the Texans to get national shine and
talking about how theyve been slide it and all this
other stuff for years, and nobody pays attention to Houston sports.
They're paying attention to the Houston Texans. They're putting them
on national television. And then they're scoring zero second zero
points in the second half of a game, and then
in the other game they're giving up eight sacks and
they can't do anything offensively. So what do we need
(49:16):
to do? We need just to stop with the You
know what, I I blame the I blame the fake
media in this town for this. You put them on
a pedestal.
Speaker 8 (49:22):
That just wasn't there.
Speaker 3 (49:23):
I'm not blaming you to know, the fake media didn't
get NBC to put them on to Net Football. No,
their record did. Their record did, and the fact that
they get it looked like they were gonna make a leap.
They traded for steph On Diggs, that got Joe Mixon,
and Joe Mixon has been a smash unfortunately Dickson and
Digs toward his ACL but it's like the networks are
taking the training wheels off and they're trying to put
(49:43):
you on the national stage, and you're falling into a ditch.

Eleven fourteen on Sports Talk seven anywhere. Ross is here
(50:04):
to tell you about about low energy performances. That was
a low energy performance by the Texans in the second half.
Have you been thinking your energy has been slowing down?
Are how are your workouts going? Is it you feel
like you're plateauing? Are you not waking up and getting
out of bed with the same motivation before you went
to bed the night before? Was the libido in issue?
Is it getting embarrassing putting you in a rut? What

Speaker 12 (51:05):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 19 (51:13):
There's no excuse, you know, that's that's a game that
we should have had. We did have and you know
obviously it's slip, but you know it ain't gonna get
no easier and I'm gonna take it, you know, we
take it all upon myself to make sure our guys,
you know, is ready. You know what I'm saying, that
we finished these games. We gotta stop playing that, you know,
(51:34):
to to lose, we gotta stop playing and not lose,
you know what I'm saying, and go play to win.
Speaker 8 (51:40):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 19 (51:41):
So I just feel like I feel like we got
to just taken initiative, own it on our work and
looking each other in the mirror.
Speaker 8 (51:48):
It is what it is.
Speaker 3 (51:50):
I know what you are saying. Thank you, Jo, thank
you Joe. Was that a call out? I hope it was.
By the way, it's I hate to correct Joe. It's
gonna get easier. You're gonna beat the Cowboys next Monday.
Everything's easier after the Lions. That's That's one thing. If
we want to see step back and look at the forest.
The Lions are arguably the best. I'm gonna say it,
(52:13):
the best. Look the Chiefs keep getting lucky. The Lions
are the best team in football. Yeah, the Lions are
the best team. An average team doesn't come back from
twenty three six of the half. But you get the average,
you get the best team in football. They try to
give you the game by turning the ball over so much.
You have to take advantage at home, and the Texans
did not do it. But that's awesome. I love that
(52:33):
Joe Mixon day. That's what our callers said. That's what
we've been saying in a different way, like not not
aggressive enough, playing not to lose. It's the words out
of Joe Mixon's mouth that's perfect. They're not playing to win,
they're playing not to lose. And he said, no, what
I'm saying. And we said, yes, exactly exactly what you're
saying that, Joe, we've seen the second half of these games.
(52:54):
We know exactly what you're saying. When at the Cowboys
seven and four win at home. For Tennessee, it's eight
and four win at Jacksonville, nine and four win for
the Dolphins ten and four, lose at Kansas City ten
and five, lose to Baltimore ten and six, they will
beat Tennessee in Nashville. They will finish eleven and six,
and they will be You're resounding AFC South champions. Can
(53:17):
I be honest with you? Not rather you lie, but
go ahead. I hate when you tell the you're a
little ten and seven ish. I'm feeling like we I
feel like we just chalk up all these The Jaguars
almost beat the Vikings. Okay, the Titans suck, but it's
just that the Texans haven't put anybody away. They're absolutely
I feel like they're absolutely gonna drop one of those
games to the Titans, they're Jaguars. Those are not guaranteed
(53:41):
wins to me, all right, you know what, I'm trying
to be glass Effl. I'm mean, but I could all
at the same token, I could see them splitting between
the Chiefs and Ravens winning one of those games. The
Chiefs look extremely vulnerable. Extreme Now you're gonna be in
the arrowhead. You know what, though, they're extremely vulnerable, But
what do they do every time the gun has zero
zero zero zero on the clock? They yeah, but they
(54:03):
get that. That's because the kicker for the Broncos joint
the kick at the end of the game, like they are.
So that was a kick that was blocked. And if
you listen to Someday from Kansas City, they knew that.
They knew how to game plan it. Go good serious.
When you get up the show today, you will see
a number of stories about, well, you knew exactly how
to block that kick. And maybe they're maybe they're full
(54:23):
of bs wall maybe they are. They might be right,
but they they knew how to block it. And the
Ravens have lost to the Browns and they lost to
the Raiders. So I'm saying, like, you can split those
games to me, all right, but also but that's the Texans.
I feel like they could split those games. And I
also feel like they're gonna lose to one of the
Titans or Jaguars teams games. And that's just to me,
that's they're not mediocre, but they're just good not great.
(54:45):
That's the phrase I'm gonna keep using. And guess what
during the AFC South Rain what were they good not great?
Nine and seven is not the bar. Matt Jacob on
seven ninety, Thanks for holding good morning.
Speaker 20 (54:55):
Yeah, hey man, hey, this is this is the first
second year.
Speaker 3 (55:00):
Quarterback and a second year coach. Man they are still learning.
Speaker 20 (55:04):
The offensive coordinator is the problem, I feel.
Speaker 3 (55:08):
And streaking the game.
Speaker 20 (55:09):
It's nothing wrong with streaking the game and playing not
to lose, because when you got a league going in
the second half, if you have if they don't never.
Speaker 8 (55:17):
Use to play option, you know what I'm saying. They
were setting up.
Speaker 20 (55:20):
They knew that they wanted to strength the game, so
they was gonna play for the run so mix and
they was gonna trying to take them out to get
They never they never play action. They never just they
officive coordinator don't know what he's doing. But who I
don't know who had them going to the to the
AFC Championship over Baltimore and Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Everybody talking
about Pittsburgh still needs to get a quarterback and they
(55:43):
ain't gonna give They'll get Russell West like he just
that was so long ago.
Speaker 3 (55:46):
He went to suit Super Bowls.
Speaker 20 (55:48):
But he's this and that and like, uh, boroughs trash.
And I'm to tell you something, Detroit, they gotta deal
with Philadelphia. Philadelphia, they're not gonna They ain't gonna one
of the leagues. And I think that that the Texas
is on their way. They and how long it took
Andy Reids to finally get it? How long did it
(56:09):
take Belichick to finally get it? It ain't like they came
out the top winning for his second year.
Speaker 2 (56:15):
I think he's doing a great job. And I think
he needed to get him a new oc.
Speaker 4 (56:19):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (56:19):
They got a lot they was injured. They're getting Mario
back on the line. They got their stay injured too.
Speaker 20 (56:24):
Man, So I understand, you know it's you know what
I'm saying that you know that people want them to win,
that thought they were one of the Super Bowl thought
I didn't think they. I think it's great that they
went and that they're gonna win the South two years
in a row on their way and they develop and
that I think eventually they get there.
Speaker 3 (56:39):
All right, man, thanks Jacob. I mean that's a glass
half full approach, I guess, But I mean what he
is saying is that this is all second year stuff
and that second year teams typically don't do this well.
The NFL world, meaning the television networks, thought this would
be a team that was not going to be playing
like an average second year team on a new coach
(56:59):
and a new quarterback. The guys in the building over
there on fan and didn't believe this was a second year.
This was a we are the division champions. We got better,
we got aggressive and free agency, we went and got
a new cornerback. We've spent some money. We're gonna go
compete with Baltimore, and we're gonna go compete with Kansas City.
(57:20):
I think, Jacob, what you just explained was for a
young team like who would be a second year like
like a Bronco team would be with Nicks next year,
we're getting better, but we're not gonna be We're not
all the way there. I believe what you're what you
think are the Texans in second year is not what
the people on Kirby believe. And I think there's there
(57:41):
is serious disappointment that this team has not gotten over
the hump against the elite teams. The Jets just got
destroyed by the by the Arizona Cardinals. Like, okay, this
game to the Lions, it's it's about It's about the
cumulative adding up of this season. At the end of
(58:02):
the day, you're six and four, but you have a
negative point differential and you were the only team in
the NFL with a winning record and a negative point differential.
That's who the Texans are. That's where the disappointment lies. Yeah,
Jim Memorial on seven ninty High.
Speaker 21 (58:15):
Jim, Hey, how you guys doing. Can you hear me?
Speaker 3 (58:19):
Okay, yes, sir, go ahead.
Speaker 22 (58:22):
First of all, y'all nailed it. But the main thing
is I think we're set it. They've only played one
complete game, and you could argue that was interior because
it was against the Patriots, and there's a problem making
adjustments at halftime. Second of all, stij his preshap reads,
(58:45):
I was at the game yesterday. I didn't see it
because I went to the restroom. But and andre Ware
was saying that Schultz was wide open on that last
play and he was waving his hands and he wasn't
even looking for him. I don't know if you guys
saw that or not. I can't comment, but that's what
(59:06):
Andrea Ware was commenting on. So why is Schultz not
being utilized? I mean, everybody else utilizes their tight end.
They caught two touchdown passes from their tight end. I
don't understand why we're not moving the ball around more.
And second of all, you just can't win games if
(59:28):
you don't put two halfs together.
Speaker 21 (59:31):
So yep, that's it.
Speaker 8 (59:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
By the way, thanks to the phone call, Schultz was
thrown at four times yesterday. That's not a small Number's
not terrible for a tight end. But also to me,
he just looks slow and he does get open like
in zone coverage, but he's not beating guys in man coverage.
You know, he's not very open to me, I don't
I don't think the games early in this in the
first half of the year, he became a threat. I
think there were some drops along the way. I think
there was he was inability to get open and sometimes
(59:54):
I think the Texans are going to have to absolutely
address the tight end position. I think this will be
Dulp Schultz's final year. As I remember, I think he's underperformed.
Well what the what kind of deal did they sign
him to? I think it was just a one year deal?
Speaker 18 (01:00:06):
O was it?
Speaker 3 (01:00:06):
Okay? Well, I'm down to move on. I think he's
just been very protest. But again yesterday, Sam Laporte is
a freak athlete. He had he had three catches for
sixty six yards, and Dalton Schultz had three catches for
sixty six yards. It's just the one of Laporta's went for.
Here's the targets. Dell nine times, MATCHI six, Schultz, Mix
and Hutchinson were all four cat Stover was two times.
(01:00:29):
So you threw to your tight end six times. That's
that's not a terrible ratio. They're out of thirty three attempts.
Schultz is on a three year deal. O. Dang, he's
going to be released after one year? How about that?
This is what I get for trusted matt Hey, you
know we it wasn't. Yeah, I was trying to we weren't.
In Nicosario's office on that one. No, I was I
was trying to decipher his word salad. No, but I
(01:00:51):
think I think I think Dalton has been very poor
this year and then not even a sense of just
number of catches. I think drops. I think blocking hasn't
been going. Yeah. Other than that, I'm sure he's a
wonderful human being. His usage has ticked up, and he's
he's a reliable like zone like I said, zone beater,
but he's just not one of the best tid ends football.
(01:01:13):
You night close and he's yours for the next two years.
Let's go Well, you know, NFL stuff depends on how
much guaranteed money he got up from how much I'm
not talking you much a lot of it. So what's
that dead caps gonna be exactly? We could look at that,
all right, quick check on the tell the Truth up next.
Then we've got more of your phone calls. We'll talk
to Troy, Ray, Gary, CJ, Jim and Gary. All Right,
this is what we were talking about right here. Let's
go glad you guys are in because look a lot
(01:01:34):
of folks bumping around this city car right now. Listen
to the show going. I thought we'd have. We were gonna
be better than this. I thought we were gonna get over
the hump the second half. Texans is a profound mystery
seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Let's
tell you about two Creeks Crossing Resort. Wonderful place to go.

they've got launder facilities. They have these amazing barbecue pits

Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
Welcome, good afternoon, the best sports luncheon h town.
Speaker 3 (01:03:08):
That's really smart. He works hard, he has a good
grasp of players. He's been around the game. You love him.
We love him so excited for the opportunity that Matt
has in front of him. For sure, this is the
Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 13 (01:03:23):
They have to win first and second down, right, Too
many negative plays on first and second down. Oh, we
didn't run the ball well, only fifty six yards rushing
the football, so you know, we didn't control the line
of scrimmage when they came to running the football, which
is what we've been doing.
Speaker 8 (01:03:39):
A good job.
Speaker 13 (01:03:40):
So you don't play well on first and second down,
you find yourself in third and long and it's hard
to you know, continuously win third and long.
Speaker 3 (01:03:53):
Killer in sync. That has been the central theme so far.
We're gonna push to tell the truth back a little
bit because frankly, unlike other people, we don't need to
necessarily hear ourselves talk. The most interactive show in the marketplace,
so when people want to call in and talk, well lunch,
I'll do it because that's what we want to do.
Let's go baby, Yeah, Dalton Schultz, We're gonna go ahead
and add an additional year to his contract. He's now
(01:04:14):
going a five year contract. Tool No, I mean I
was two off, so I want'll be two off. Ouit
direction five year guaranteed all money seven one three two
one two five, seven ninety. Let's get those phone calls
in because we do want to hear from you, folks
the great city of Houston, Texas. Let's go to Troy
Humble on the Matt Thomas Show. Ross Troy, thank you
(01:04:34):
for holding good morning.
Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
That's how y'all doing.
Speaker 23 (01:04:37):
Man, sorry to hear about the Dalton shows man for
that long, because he's one of the worst pocket He's
an absolute zero at the run game.
Speaker 3 (01:04:48):
But looks like you can cut him outter this year
without much tap issues.
Speaker 23 (01:04:54):
Well we'll see about the text and look up all.
They think that's good. They don't have to play the
NFC Central now they don't kick. Three of their losses
have come to that division.
Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
I just think, I.
Speaker 23 (01:05:04):
Mean, injuries, does injuries that they've had injuries.
Speaker 2 (01:05:08):
To keep people?
Speaker 23 (01:05:08):
I mean, I'm not making excuses, but that does add it.
You know, you're starting all Pro wide receiver. It's missed
the last five games, and you missus Stephan Diggs.
Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
So yeah, but.
Speaker 23 (01:05:23):
Let me go, let me go to that part. I'm
gonna get to that part. I can't get to that part,
so I'm going half like they say, the last half
empty on that. You know, Christian Harri's supposed to be
one of your best starting linebackers. He touched the field
lost season a long. You got you start the rookie
at corner of Ready Rick at the safety. Having said
that game after game, these last loss, You've had chance
to win these games via Green Bay and all those
(01:05:47):
close games, and this game should have been a blowout,
no no doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (01:05:52):
The way you dominated Detroit, and I just go back.
Speaker 23 (01:05:55):
I don't want to blame it on the offensive play caller,
but it's a common nation of everything CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
Like I think you mentioned it.
Speaker 23 (01:06:02):
This year, CJ's been off because the pass protection. I
wouldn't say happy feet, but these are throws that he
normally makes kind of deal that Tank deal that was
wide open.
Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
I just think he never saw that safety.
Speaker 23 (01:06:15):
Just thought Tank Dell was just wide open, busted play,
and he just threw it the way he did.
Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
But they haven't said that.
Speaker 23 (01:06:19):
It's a company on your coach and your offensive coordinator
to close these games out. You know, you've had every
chance to win these games, to go zero, no points
in the second half, five games that I touchdown the
second half. It's just that with this offense, this so
called offensive play caller, it doesn't make sense. And so
(01:06:40):
the glass half of it is that they six and
four and they got the Cowboys coming up. I don't
want to see no close twenty three to twenty win
over the Cowboys. They need to stomp them, but they
need to take stock of Okay, because CJ did have
a pretty good pass protection last night. I know he
got sacked four times, but he had time to throw
so they need to lock it down because the fans are,
(01:07:01):
like I said, we upset, but we're not. I think
they're a bad team. They're a good team. We just
feel like they're playing with our without confidence right now.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
That's what I think. CJ. They had all the confidence CJ.
Speaker 23 (01:07:12):
He made every play, every throw last year and the
team win at CJ Stroud This year. You don't see
as good, great, a good much confidence in him this year,
and I think the team to struggle it because of that.
But I got confidence in him. They're gonna get it going.
I still got confidence in my Texas. That's all I got.
Speaker 3 (01:07:29):
Mad. Thanks all right, and you should not have you
should still have confidence your team. I just think what
I've what I've learned here in the last couple of
weeks rosters. I think that the expectations have been this
isn't a fan base that's going well. We've had a
couple of tough games against some good opponents, and we're
going to get past this and once we get to December,
(01:07:50):
get the engines going again. Look out here we come.
I think the reality is starting to kick in that
there is still and we've you and I've talked about
this a lot, such a separation between the elite teams
the NFL. The Texans are right now. The Texans are not.
They're a good team, but they are far from elite
and they're haven't put together an elite performance except for
the game against a team that's won three games this year,
and that was the New England Patriots. Yeah, and it
(01:08:11):
was their first round quarterback in his very first start.
You have lost three of your last four games. The
one win was a field goal game at home against
a quarterback that was benched the next week. That's it
three points over the Colts. So in these last two
and what I was saying at that point when they
(01:08:32):
were six and two was like, you know what, I'm
gonna be glass half full. We haven't seen them play
their best football, and maybe things are gonna be okay,
They're gonna get better. They're gonna clean some of this
stuff stuff up. They have cleaned up a lot of
the penalties. That hasn't been as bad as it was
early on in the season, but it's still far too
often the pressure, the conservative play calling, that not taking
(01:08:53):
advantage of the opportunities afforded to you by the other team.
They just haven't done it enough. Yep, let's go to
Montgomery at eleven forty on seven Honty, Gary, thanks for
holding what's on your mind?
Speaker 18 (01:09:04):
After guys, I wanted to touch base on something that CJ said,
and I think it was week four and at press
conference he talked about he is not allowed to check
out of plays. And when he said that, I was
completely shocked. I couldn't one of all, it was probably
too much information to release out there. But I don't
know if you guys noticed that, because I started watching
it a lot more after that game. Other teams could
(01:09:27):
hear that too.
Speaker 3 (01:09:27):
By the way, well how about this, how about the
fact that every time they break snap. I don't interrupt you,
but how about time anytime they break the huddle, there's
like hardly any time left on the Playcocks, even if
he wanted to make an adjustment, there's no time for
him to kind of look over the field.
Speaker 18 (01:09:39):
One hundred percent. And where do big, huge plays come from.
They come from checkouts. They come from those plays, ask
Tton mannings as Tom Brady, that is critical to big plays.
They're missing that so much. Not allowing him to check
out of a play is absolutely amazing. I cannot understand
the second year quarterback. He seems small, he's talented, what
(01:10:01):
is the problem, Okay, and and so so in that effort,
you can see where even defenses maybe even heard that
and said, oh, well, let's let's let's make your adjustments.
At the halftime too, they're they're not making the right adjustments.
So they're coming out and even if they had a
good first half, right CJ is still not checking out
of plays, but had a good game plan second half,
(01:10:22):
they seem.
Speaker 11 (01:10:22):
Hey, this is what they're going to do to us.
Speaker 18 (01:10:24):
Now they're making the adjustment and CJ still can't check
out of a play. There's no there's not a chance
of anything happening with the with the Texans until that happens.
Just one hundred percent believe that.
Speaker 3 (01:10:36):
Uh, I don't. I don't really know exactly about the
structure of their offense and what they're doing. I have
to imagine that they either if CJ. Stroud isn't able
to call his own play or his own audible, they
probably at the minimum have two different plays that they
call and then he can check to the sun. Yeah,
I can't imagine in today's NFL world, within the medication
that once the play is called out of the huddle,
(01:10:56):
that there's no room for adaptation. At the very least,
they probably have two plays and he can check to
the other one. I don't and look, this is not
I don't know. This is a question for c. J.
Stroud or or Bobby Slook or Demiico Ryans or somebody,
but I would say, at the very minimum, likely he
can check to another play. Yeah, let's go to ray
in North Dakota on seven hounty Hi right was hi?
Speaker 21 (01:11:21):
Hey?
Speaker 18 (01:11:21):
Uh?
Speaker 11 (01:11:22):
Ma qu quick question question. I'm not play with Army
Saint Brown when he got that that first down and
did we have a time out?
Speaker 18 (01:11:31):
And left there?
Speaker 11 (01:11:34):
When was this what Armands Brown got that got the
first down on the third of six? Did we have
a time.
Speaker 21 (01:11:40):
Out right there?
Speaker 3 (01:11:40):
They might have had one time out, I think I
can't remember. You're talking about the very last drive of
the game.
Speaker 11 (01:11:47):
Yeah, the very last drive of the game. We had
a time out left before he got that first down?
Speaker 2 (01:11:50):
Right?
Speaker 18 (01:11:51):
Uh?
Speaker 11 (01:11:51):
Yes, this might be the second time a couple of
times I see that with with Demko Roan. I'm not
not the Rego Rico as the coach, but at some
point time, like like you gotta put something that's on
Deleco because like when FECHI was kind of that situation
with Adams, you know what I'm saying, and they didn't
call the time out like they were running a zone
(01:12:13):
right there on that last job when Saint Baul got
that that uh that first down and there was a
linebacker Shotier was over there, Colevin right there, Like why
are we not like in a nickel on the third
and sext and having more more dbs on the field.
I know we had the injuries, and then like I
think it's of the Deleko rob too man, like he's
(01:12:34):
gotta do something about this play call that Barby slogan
is putting out there, when like can they please get
him to take these reverses out of the playbook and
just not call those plays and these like uncreative.
Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
I don't necessarily mind using Joe Mixon life that a
couple of times. I thought that was some diversity to him.
I think they of the Tank Dell reverse. Yeah, maybe so,
But I mean the end a round was was mixing
worked out well. I I my moving parts moving around
a little bit here, I because just running over left
tackle wasn't doing the job. Yeah, but I think we
might have to get do we have to get an
(01:13:08):
obligatory Texans and a round failure. It feels like it's
happened at least once a week. That's true. Dell's losing
like eight yards of carry on these things. Yeah, to
go it on, but to the defense of him, at
least there's some diversity to it. Yeah, I just I
think predictability is part of the reason why this team
becomes such a tough team to watch in the second half.
(01:13:28):
And also time and place like that on Thursday night
when CJ. Stroud is limping or literally limping around on
the field and you run a goal line fade against
him against DJ Reid, one of the better cornerbacks in
the league. That was not with Joe Mixon throwing the ball.
Not the time not to place. Bobby Slowick No. Eleven
forty five on Sports Talk seven I, We're going to
(01:13:49):
take our to tell the truth moved to twelve thirty

of which three I don't believe, one I do. We'll
get to that. We got Roger and Gary will get
to you guys the news at noon and more on
the Texans. Uh failure, failure to crush, failure to finish.
I like that. How about failure to finish? You know
(01:14:11):
there's a movie failure to launch, Failure to finish? Okay?
Is that the new theme of the Texans? I guess,
I mean it happens Matt by the way, unpopular Take
real quick in five seconds. Yes, Texans uniform is hard
to read. On TV, Mike Turco kept calling them awful
because he couldn't read the numbers. As a play by
(01:14:32):
play guy, I know I'm one hundred percent behind him
as a Joe fan. It's okay as Joe fan, shut
your bumb ass up. Is a pup by play guy,

Speaker 12 (01:16:10):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:16:18):
Bro bit, quick bit of non breaking news, but it
is news. Uh, the University of Nebraska is going to
have a new offensive coordinator this week. I think they're
playing USC. If I'm not mistaken, let me teble check
and see who that is they are playing?
Speaker 8 (01:16:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:16:34):
USC. The new OC for Nebraska, Daniel Colgerson. Oh really,
ten days ago he signs up as an assistant as
like a like a consultant, and now he's the OC.
Okay is that where he signed up his tryner? Remember
where he signed Okay, yeah, okay, I didn't think it
was Nebraska. So he's he's moving from t from Fort
(01:16:55):
Worth to Lincoln to now the OC spot. Well, man,
go Huskers. You know those those seas make crazy money.
And Dana's done quite well. Dana did quite well. From
Dana's God, Dana's doing really well. Language Matthew, I said,
Dana's doing really well. I don't think I said you
said god, dangy Dana. No excuse me, I know, I'm
(01:17:18):
just kidding, A lot of whiskey, a lot of bourbon,
a lot of beer, a lot of other things. What
are you talking about? Country concerts? Exactly? Gary in Spring
on seven ninety Hi Gary.
Speaker 24 (01:17:34):
Hey, Matt Ross, Hi, he let me I have a question.
I want to ask you. No doubt they should have
won that game yesterday. They're having trouble scoring obviously in
the second second half here. Uh, Nico Collins, man, I
love that named Nico.
Speaker 3 (01:17:50):
I was gonna have another kid and it was a
boy named me Nico.
Speaker 8 (01:17:52):
But I'm too old for that.
Speaker 24 (01:17:53):
But let me ask you a question. Two questions about Nico.
And he's been out how many games?
Speaker 3 (01:17:58):
Four or five? Five now? Total? And what's their record? Okay?
Speaker 24 (01:18:07):
And I'm not a I'm not a man that thinks
one man or one person can make all the difference
in the world and team, but some are there.
Speaker 8 (01:18:15):
There's a few.
Speaker 18 (01:18:16):
Uh.
Speaker 24 (01:18:16):
And what was their record when he was playing?
Speaker 3 (01:18:20):
Well, that would be four and one.
Speaker 8 (01:18:24):
Okay, that's a that's a kind of a big It's.
Speaker 3 (01:18:27):
Notario though, It's not that they would have I don't
think they win the Jets game if Nico Collins is
it was on the field last night. You could argue
that they would win if Nico Collins were there because
it was a closer game. Yeah, he definitely makes a difference.
But when he there have also been some really good competitors.
Speaker 24 (01:18:43):
I mean there you know, yeah, but but when he
was in there, did he catch any touchdown passes or
any did the score in the second half when he
was in there?
Speaker 3 (01:18:52):
Hey, what Google's your friend?
Speaker 8 (01:18:53):
Go knock it out, Roger.
Speaker 3 (01:18:55):
Yeah, everything was better with Nico better. He's playing a.
Speaker 24 (01:19:00):
So so you guys, neither one of you think that
he's that he that he's a single difference and why
they're going one?
Speaker 3 (01:19:07):
Is he playing left guard? Yeah? Was he playing left
guard with for for if he could have played left
guard for Kenyon Green, then maybe I would argue that
if if he could have played on the offensive line,
then madey a difference. But no, Nico is was leading
the league and receiving yards when he went out. Uh,
he is very much missed. He's a deep threat. But
that hasn't been the issue. I mean, there has line protection,
(01:19:28):
it's been part of it. And now Gary, Yeah, is
that the point you're trying to make Gary with this
socratic question asking like are you What did you say Socratic?
Speaker 24 (01:19:36):
Yeah, yeah, no, he's uh, he's not a guard and
in any of that, but he is. He is a
best receiver but in football, so so with with he cut,
with he with with him coming back, it could make
a big difference.
Speaker 3 (01:19:51):
Yeah. I think it absolutely makes a big difference. And
as I said, I think that we could argue that
they win that game of Nico Collins is on the
field last night, but they don't beat the Jet that
Kenyon Green was getting blown up every other second in
that Jets game. They don't win that Jets game if
Nico Collins is there, because because you're getting sacked eight
times and you're under pressure every time that C. J.
(01:20:12):
Stroud dropped back. So does it help? Yes? Is it
the sole reason they've been losing this games? These games?
I would say no. Go back to that word you
used a minute ago, the Socratic method of tea. Are
you familiar with the Socratic method of teaching? Met I
would like for you to run, So he's asking quick,
that's how you do to kind of prod to your
to your argument. How long has Nico Collins been How
(01:20:33):
many games have they lost with Nico Collins out what's
their record before he was out. They needs to get
to his dimint. There was a little bit of a
I want to get on I got your moment in there. Yeah,
it's I like the Socratic I'm with it. I think
Socratic is It's a great word, and it's how if
you read the old Socrates, right, if you read the
the old Plato stuff, and it's we should do on
(01:20:53):
the show from here on on a daily Socratic argument, right,
That's what he was doing. Yeah, it would be too
simplistic to say if Nico Collins on the football field,
they would not have dropped three or four. I agree,
would have helped absolutely. Is he one of the elite
receivers in the NFL this year, no question. Yeah. If
(01:21:14):
he was throwing two Nico Collins rather than Xavier Hutchinson
on third down, things probably would go better, for sure,
I would agree. And you know what, the defenses would
have given Nico Collins more respect. Now, Grant, we got
to talk about this. The safeties for the Lions. Did
you see the stat during the game they had not
given up a touchdown this year? Really? Yes, they had
(01:21:35):
ten interceptions between the two of them. The two safeties
are Branch and Joseph no touchdowns allowed to them. Ten
I in T's numerous pass breakups. You went against an
elite secondary yesterday. Real quick, let's go to Scott and
River Oak. Scott says, you were at the game last night,
(01:21:57):
and what did you see that maybe the rest of
us didn't see?
Speaker 15 (01:22:01):
Well, the only thing I would say, I know we
were just talking about the previous caller was talking about
an Eco Collins. He's obviously going to make a little
somewhat of a difference. I really don't think you know.
From my eye being there, I actually thought the past
protection was a lot better yesterday. Would you guys agree
with that?
Speaker 2 (01:22:18):
It was better?
Speaker 3 (01:22:18):
But it was not a lot better. It was he
still got a lot of pressures. Pro Football Focus already
put their grades out of think on some of the
things and said it did not turn out particularly well. Uh,
it was better because he wasn't running for his life
every single play. It still gets sacked four times. The
running run blocking was not good as was was in
previous weeks. It was I would just say a little better.
(01:22:40):
Is that is that okay? Or do you want to
do you see something that I didn't see?
Speaker 15 (01:22:43):
No? No, I mean, I would say a little bit
better is fine, but I mean there was some of
it yesterday in my mind was on CJ. To be
perfectly honest with you. There was one sack he took
and we were deep in our own end zone where
he yes, he got sacked and the protection wasn't great,
but he didn't move up in the pocket as well
as he probably should have. Obviously that played a tank
(01:23:04):
being there. Tank the one in the end zone where
he threw an interception live it looked like tank was
wide open and the ball was either underthrown or late.
You know, from my vantage point, is what that and
that would have been the difference in the game. But
you know, yes, it was just that was just a
brutal loss. And to get home at twelve thirty and
still have to go to work today and be very tired.
(01:23:25):
I mean, it was just just unbelievable. And oh, I
have a good observation for you. I guess who I
saw there? Mister Detroit comes to ruin Houston's wives himself.
I saw aj Hinch at the game.
Speaker 3 (01:23:38):
Actually, Oh, I know you serious? Who was he rooting for?
Was he wearing gear?
Speaker 2 (01:23:43):
He was not wearing gear?
Speaker 15 (01:23:45):
I saw him at the end when he was going
down there. I was in the club section and he
was going down the escalator and he was not wearing
any gear. But I mean, I would have to ma,
and I didn't get a chance to say anything to him.
If I would, if I would have been close enough,
I absolutely would have just like asking who he was
rooting for. But I don't know who was reading for.
I'd have to imagine he was reading for Detroit to
(01:24:05):
just keep this.
Speaker 3 (01:24:06):
Yeah, yeah, my guess is thanks to the phone call.
My guest is the Dan Campbell probably invited to those
you know, those coaching fraternadent guys. They all take like that.
No broskis are like twenty five year old dudes that
make forty thousand dollars a year. I'm talking about real
grown ass. Okay, I think party with Dan Campbell would
be pretty fun. But I don't think Dan Campbell's a brosky.
He might have been twenty years ago, as long as
(01:24:27):
he doesn't like chug a beer in head. But you
it might be probably a fun time. That's true, all right.

Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
Six on Sports Talk seven ninety. We are halfway done.
We want to hear from you. It's seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Where are your Texans in
your mind right now? Did you sell them too high
on being a team that would be a legitimate Super
Bowl contender? Or is there's still too much work to
(01:26:05):
be done. We'll discuss more of that after the news
at noon, and with that the seven ninety Sports Center,
the sports desk. Here's Ross all.
Speaker 25 (01:26:15):
Right now, We're gonna go ahead and take a look
at the news around the world at noon. Let's start
with a heartbreaker in Houston last night, the fifty.
Speaker 2 (01:26:27):
Two for the wind.
Speaker 4 (01:26:29):
It is.
Speaker 9 (01:26:31):
Good just inside the upright take Bates.
Speaker 7 (01:26:36):
Home town hero, and the Lions have come all the way.
Speaker 3 (01:26:40):
Back, twenty three to seven at the half, twenty three
to seven at the half. You do not score a
point in the second half, and you lose on I
mean right side, kiss of the upright, left side, kissing
(01:27:00):
the upright, Jacob batesfield goal balls Jake Baits, and you'll
lose twenty six to twenty three. The Texans picking up
the pieces, Matt. Then they get the extra day they
play Monday night at the Dallas Cowboys get right game.
I'm hoping for my as I am Battle of Red Bross,
my Houston Texans. Have you seen the opening line on
(01:27:23):
that game?
Speaker 11 (01:27:23):
Both?
Speaker 3 (01:27:23):
I believe it is a seven point spread, Yes, seven
and a half. Now, so you gotta gotta pay for
the hook now if you want. The Texans ain't scared.
I'm a little scared because on the road, or just
because they're just the Doldrums. Continue Michael Parsons back. He
seems to be very upset. Yeah, but you've got Trey
Lance and Cooper Rush. Well, at least it's gonna be
a night game, so nobody's gonna be blinded in the
(01:27:45):
red zone by their own players.
Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Darling, we gonna be girl.
Speaker 3 (01:27:49):
We gotta see what you and your fan bases. I'm
sure they're gonna be there. I bet you, traveling Texans.
It's not gonna help because it's Monday night. I bet
it'd be more if it was Sunday night. Oh yeah,
but Monday or Sunday noon or three right board, it
still should be a lot more Texans fans, I would guess. Yeah,
so they're gonna be doing Nune hookups. What does that
mean They're gonna have sex but with a game on Monday?
You know what hookups are? Traveling textas gonna be bored
(01:28:11):
on Monday? What else they gonna do?
Speaker 21 (01:28:13):
What?
Speaker 3 (01:28:14):
Why did that just come out of your mouth? You're
one of a cod If you're okay, here's the deal.
If you're a traveling if you're a traveling Texans, tell
us what's really going on on these trips? I'm flabbergasted.
Back to the news at noon, the rockets would Fred
(01:28:39):
had seven in the third along with a couple of
the steels and to assist and a man Thompson comes
up with a turnover.
Speaker 26 (01:28:46):
In the grid.
Speaker 3 (01:28:48):
What oh Dad? Oh the emphatic call. So I'm sitting
here calling going on a couple of stats. Oh men,
Thompson saw the inbound PA and he throws it into
Jaylen Green, like, good God, that man's got Kate Cunningham's
got children. He does, but I'm assuming you would like
to Yeah, he's got a family of He was also
(01:29:11):
taking number one ahead of Jalen Green, who screamed at
him and got the tech Matthew, Yes he did. What
was that like? He got that? I was like what happened,
and they go yep, got teed up, and he goes,
I'm not number four, bitch or number two. Well, yeah,
he wears number four. I wears number four. Uh so
the Rockets now late game now explained that game to
we mad have had it on. I'm gonna be honest,
(01:29:33):
I wasn't one invested. We have to go back and
check the tape. Apprin Chingu missed a free throw. Then
Detroit comes down, they get fouled, have a chance to
get free throws, they miss, Then they get fouled again,
and the free throws are missed, and then Jayde and
Ivy in the right baseline grabs the second rebound off
the miss and can't put a shot up and the
(01:29:54):
Rockets escape. If the playoffs started today that I'm on
pace seventh seed for the Rockets. They were the four
seed two days ago. No, damn, well you lose. I
mean they just got destroyed at the Oklahoma City Thunder
defense is really good, but bad news for them. By
the way, as Chet Holmgren has a lilac right, lilac
(01:30:19):
wing fracture. Man, how's your how's your right lilac wing?
I think the NBA does a really good job of
making up names for injury. No, they go the injury report.
They talk about metatar souls and metacarpools and right lilac
wing fractures. They don't mess around. I kind of like that.
It's a refreshment, No, because it makes me have to
go to the Google to figure out exactly what's talking.
But this may yeah, but would you rather have that
(01:30:41):
or the actual I's got some discomfort, no body foot injury,
a local ankles on lower body discover no, no, dumb it down.
Give me the right lilac when general public does not
care about what a lilac injury. But I can learn
a bad hip right wing lilac fracture. So that begs
the question, Matt chet holmgre ih or ip, what's his
(01:31:04):
body hythe and weight? Oh, it's a pelvic fracture. He
fractured his pelvis. That's not good for anyone. He's good
to block shots, hits threes. Something we were thinking about
when he was coming out of the draft. I've told
people in Oklahoma City, I said, when the number one
pick was Podlo Bank Carol, all of rocket fan dation
(01:31:26):
was like, don't pick I want it, don't pick Jet
and then Chet got picked two and the place went bonkers.
We got Jabbaire. Jabari has been underwhelming offensively. He has
not performed well so far. There's averaging six eleven points
per game, six and a half rebound, shooting forty one
(01:31:47):
percent from the floor in twenty seven percent from three.
All right, Matt, Well elsewhere in sports, how about them
New Orleans Saints beat the Falcons yesterday? They beat the Falcons.
They I mean backs against the wall, bunch of people
on ir not expected to win the game. They did.
And well, here is interim head coach Darren Rizzy after
the game.
Speaker 4 (01:32:08):
No, man, I'm a pretty open guy. So this is
how my day started. I got I get down here
to the stadia. I get down there, superdown my goat
and the head coaches locker room, which you know I've
never used before.
Speaker 2 (01:32:17):
Right, So here I am early.
Speaker 4 (01:32:19):
In the more. I go to the bathroom and this
is how my day started. I clogged the toilet and
I'm like, this is gonna be a crappy day, pun intended.
And so with this, I'm like, Okay, this is not
really a great start to the day. Here we go
and so yeah, I'm not really feeling like a head
coach of an NFL team right now. So uh so
I'm like, really, this is really how we're gonna start
(01:32:41):
my day. So but but listen, there's moments starting the game.
You know, I'm so wrapped up in the h in
my routine. Uh there's moments today where like, I'm I'm
almost forgetting I'm just going through my routine and I'm
and I'm kind of forgetting that that I'm that I'm
the head coach a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (01:32:58):
All true?
Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
All right, So the issue is are we blaming his
digestive system or are we blaming the old plumbing at
the Super Dome. I gotta imagine they have modern toilets
over there, right, It's an old building. It's an old building.
I don't want to be talking about this, Matt. I
(01:33:20):
guess I brought it up on News at Noon. I'm
just saying we will. The News at Noon can brings
you stories that other news stations are uncomfortable bringing it up.
This is why you tune in to the News at
Noon on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. I mean,
how many times in your life have you gone for
that morning one any your toilet, it happens to all
(01:33:41):
of us. Yeah, and then then you slip while you're
getting up and get a lilac fracture? Is that what
happened to Chatty? You've you've he was trying to drop
a couple of pounds and believe this happened on the court. Okay,
that's the news that. How is your right leightlac better
my left? Okay? Seven five seven ninety seven one three
(01:34:02):
two one two five seven ninety We got to tell
the truth of Bomba. They are at one o'clock. We
put the music to the dashardly events of war. We
get last night, Ross, your beloved Texans had a twenty
six to nine lead at the intermission, twenty three to seven.
(01:34:23):
Are you okay? It just feels better when I make
up the score. Okay, doesn't seem nearly as better, or
maybe it feels worse. They had a sixteen point lead
at the intermission. When let me ask you this, Houston,
I'm asking this right now. Seven one three two one
two five seven, Nintie, I want you to help Demiico
Ryans and his team get that killer instinct in the
(01:34:44):
second half. How do you fix that seven one three,
two one two five seven ninety time he is twelve fifteen.
It is the Matt Thomas Show here on Sports Talk
seven aunty with a word for the Shell Federal Credit Union.
I want you to get an auto loan rate that's
going to give you great interest rate, very fair. It's
gonna give you two hundred and fifty dollars in cash back,
(01:35:05):
and it's also going to give you a chance for
a couple of skip of pays and ninety days of
deferred payment, all with the Shell Federal Credit Union. Shell
FCU dot org. Shell FCU dot org is where you
can go to get that auto loan for either a
new vehicle, a pre owned vehicle, or perhaps you want
to refinance the vehicle that you're currently in. Shell FCU
(01:35:25):
dot org shell FSU dot org for the Shell Federal
Credit Union.
Speaker 11 (01:35:30):
What more.
Speaker 12 (01:35:31):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:35:38):
I feel like this game was on me.
Speaker 14 (01:35:40):
You know, definitely got to make plays, gotta make throws,
can't turn the ball over and when we're in scoring position.
Speaker 2 (01:35:46):
So there's a I.
Speaker 14 (01:35:49):
Blame this on me, you know, I gotta be better
in this in those moments. So yeah, it's really just
got to go down to score in the red zone
and defenses turned getting the turnovers like they were, so
gotta be able to you know, reward them with points
and something we didn't do. So, you know, I feel
like I'm the one to blame.
Speaker 3 (01:36:06):
All right, Is that lip service from CJ? Or is
he being authentic? I believe the answer to that is
he is being authentic. I think he is wearing this
as much as anybody else. And I'm way okay with that.
Seven one three two two five seven hoey. I don't
believe when I see c J. Stroud ever speak in
(01:36:28):
front of a podium microphone, he's doing it just to
be politically correct. Other quarterbacks. Absolutely play it again, Play
the cut again, Connor, if you don't mind. I think
this is him being authentic and not just trying to
give us a quarterbacks speak.
Speaker 14 (01:36:46):
I feel like this game was on me, you know,
definitely got to make plays, gotta make throws, can't turn
the ball over and when we're in scoring position, So
there's a I blame this on me, you know, I
gotta be better in this in those moments. So yeah,
it's really just got to go down to score. In
the red zone and defense is turned getting the turnovers
like they were so got to be able to, you know,
(01:37:09):
reward them with points and you know something we didn't do. So,
you know, I feel like I'm the one to blame.
Speaker 3 (01:37:15):
Be so hard at yourself. CJ what he should wear it,
But he's part of it. Yeah, it's not by himself.
I think I think he does know that he has
to play better. I think there there's a tinge of him.
He's gonna put it on himself. They could lose any
they could lose a game and give up a bunch
of fifty five points and he would say it's on me.
It was thirty seven, thirty six, you'd be like, yeah,
(01:37:36):
I gotta if I to throw that just one more touchdown.
There is some of that, but I do think there
is some genuine feelings of I cost us this game,
and well, I'm not gonna say he costs them the game.
It was a number of things that we can point to,
but those were two really bad interceptions. You're coming out
of the ear up twenty three to seven. You want
to put your stamp on that game. You want to throw,
(01:37:57):
you want to get a touchdown, drive going you throw
on first down, shocking the world really the way that
the Bobby Slowan calls plays and you throw a pick
that was tough, and then the second one with Tank
Dell wide open. You know what it is. Part of
this is is that he's making throws that a normal
rookie would make. He didn't make those throws last year,
(01:38:19):
and this is stuff that we're not seeing him accustomed
to doing. He still made some special throws. That second
quarter drive that Dalton Schultz to the to the sideline
with special that John Mechi touchdown JOHNI was an incredible throw.
He made a handful of like wow throws, and he
does that every week. He still is going to delight
you way more than he's going to disappoint you.
Speaker 8 (01:38:41):
I will.
Speaker 3 (01:38:41):
Yeah, he's a little more human this year than he
was last year. I would say those especially the Tank
Dell one really hurts the other like you're throwing an
out route and it gets jumped by the corner. That
happens every week in the NFL. That feels more excusable.
But the one to the Tank Dell where he just
kind of lofty casually low it up there and allowed
the defense to come back. That that was a bad one.
(01:39:04):
Let's go to uh biscuit on seven nine and twelve,
twenty four biscuit, Good afternoon, Hey.
Speaker 10 (01:39:10):
Good afternoon, my brothers. Hi, Hey, Ross and Matt. I'm
gonna kind of disagree with you on a couple of
points you guys have been talking about and and and
and to see Day's response, he's absolutely right, you know
what I mean, He's absolutely right. He's that like you
say that coming out of the locker room and throwing
in asecond on the first plane. I mean that that's
(01:39:31):
like a you know, the the momentum you can just
kill the more that gave Detroit life even though they
didn't score. It's like, nah, man, we a different team
in the second half. And that's where I get to
our disagree with you Ross. When one team comes out
of the locker room and does better on a regular basis,
and one team comes out of the locker room does
(01:39:52):
worse on a regular basis. Yeah, there's something going on.
It's something that's happening. And what to me, what's happening
is what you did. And first half no longer works.
Now what can you do next? And that's where the
technics are getting stuck. They to me, there's no differencetween
last night game and the Buffalo game, only that we
won the Buffalo game. So we kind of like, well, yeah,
(01:40:16):
now there's some issues going on it they gotta address.
And then another problem was Kenyon Green was the scapegoat
for the offense. Now he's gone, so you can't just
go down Kenyon Green. It's more things going on that
they need to correct. And to me, I'm gonna disagree
with you again. I think Schultz need to be targeting
(01:40:36):
more because that's what CJ. If you watch that first
player out of the halftime when he tried to throw
it to Tank Dell, the auncor showed did a hook
on the same side.
Speaker 13 (01:40:47):
He was open.
Speaker 10 (01:40:47):
But CJ, for that whatever reason, he likes throwing it
to the white out and he tried to whip it.
It's a harder throw poured the sideline, and you're right,
the guy was reading Tank. They all kind of outed
off the route, so the guy jumped the route and
he intercepted it. But if he just took the easy
to throw the shouts, we got six seven yards, that's
(01:41:07):
what he got to do more of. And last I
would say for slowly. They did make an adjustment. We
got to give them credit. They did make an adjustment.
On offensive line. They were double teaming with helping the
left guard out and that stopped a lot of it.
And then the backs would come up tight on some
of those long third down place and they were picking
the blitzers up the a gap, so cee they had
(01:41:29):
a little more time. They wasn't it wasn't perfect, but
it was better. And so I see the adjustments being made.
The pennies are down. It's just the Texas that's got
a few things to tweet. But they're right there. And
that's all I've got to say. They're right there. They're
right there with the best teams.
Speaker 3 (01:41:47):
No, no, come on you. You brought up a lot
of information. They're not right there. They have lost man.
Speaker 10 (01:41:53):
This is what I'm saying, Matt, Matt, this is what
I'm saying to you. The lack of experience is the
biggest problem in my opinion, the lack of the other
teams have been through the wars man. They just got
to realize it takes four quarters and you get some
of the other guys healthy and stop running on first
every time I think they're gonna be okay.
Speaker 3 (01:42:13):
Man, let me tell you Laramie Tunes has been through
the Wars. Joe has been through the Wars. I mean,
Dalton Schultz has been through the Wars.
Speaker 10 (01:42:20):
Two players. Man, that's just too and tons. Don't get
me started on tunes.
Speaker 3 (01:42:24):
Oh you know, Oh my god.
Speaker 10 (01:42:28):
And that's one of the problems. He's supposed to be
your leader and he's not coming through in the there's
no excuse. Okay, we believe the guard get beat up
the middle or you know some of that dude came
off the edge or trumpst didn't get a hand on it.
And it's like, and this is in the fourth quarter.
It's like, come on, you're supposed to be the star.
We're supposed to not worry about the left side and
tons of you know, for whatever reason, man, he's just
(01:42:50):
not He's not the clutch guy that they need him
to be when the when the rubber meets the road,
when it's nut cutting time in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (01:42:58):
Thank you got to roll, my man, thank you. They're
not right there. You I'm sorry you. You you don't
force all those turnovers. You don't have a cyclic. You
don't have cyclical patterns, and the cyclical pattern is this
Texans football team is not performing the second half of games. Yeah,
(01:43:19):
but they lost on a last second field goal. They're
not right there, and you you know what I mean
by that. I mean literally it's a semantical argument. Which, right,
that's for that's for a later show. Yes, being in
the NFL, they're a couple of plays away, but in
being in the NFL, a couple of plays away is
(01:43:39):
what separates the good from the great.
Speaker 4 (01:43:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:43:41):
So it's like losing a baseball game over and over
four to three. You know, Yeah, you still take a loss.
You don't. You don't put teams, Uh, Elite teams figure
out a way to force the turnovers and hold on
the games. Elite teams put feet on throats. Yes, Elite
teams are aggressive. Elite teams blow people out once in
a while, and not just the Patriots on their first start.
(01:44:03):
Like we talked about the Ravens. The Ravens have three losses.
A couple of them were bad. But the Ravens they've
boat raced the Bills. They've boat raced teams where they're
destroying them and where they look unstoppable. Have at any
point in this year. Have we said, man, the Texans
looked unstoppable today. No. And that's the problem that we
(01:44:24):
have seen the Lions look unstoppable. We have seen the
Ravens look unstoppable. We've seen other teams in the NFL
looked at the Bills. We have not seen it from
the Texans. You hung around with the Colts twice another
court Richards got bingched and you can barely beat them
at a field goal. Yeah, this is there. Look, the
Texans are good, but they're not just right there. And
(01:44:45):
that's what I think is frustrating. Like I said, it
would have been almost easier. I say, it's easy to
say this afterwards, but if Montgomery runs for one hundred
and twenty, Gibbs runs for one hundred, and they score
three touchdowns and you just get out physical, it's easier
to take to where you had it on a platter
and you fumbled, you fumbled the game away. Or if
golf thrown for three hundred yards and four touchdowns like
(01:45:05):
you normally does. All right to tell the truth is

Speaker 1 (01:46:12):
Back to battle Red Ross and Liberty White Ass Matt Thomas,
what is what I am real pale Texans talk continues
on the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 3 (01:46:25):
What I don't know why we love talking to you all, seriously,
(01:46:50):
may I always agree with you, but we love talking
to you and that's why we normally do it. To
Tell the Truth at eleven thirty, but soin so many
people wanted to talk Texans, we pushed it an hour back,
and that's we're gonna We're not gonna just put segments
in just to kill time. If people want to talk Taxans,
we want to talk Texans with you, and we want
to open those phone lines up to keep you guys going.
At seven one three two one two five seven ninety
(01:47:11):
seven one three two one two five seven ninety time
now for us to play a weekly feature called to
Tell the Truth. And here's how it works. I'm gonna
give you four sports opinions, Ross and Connor, and you're
going to say nope to three of them. One I
do believe which one of the four am I telling
the truth? This is strictly opinions, not facts. Okay, My
opinion number one is uh, Kansas City continues to live
(01:47:39):
by it. I mean hanging by a thread. Hanging by
a thread, on the skin of their teeth whatever. Escape
with escaping, I got terrible news Free this trend's gonna continue.
I can't believe this, but they've won sobody with games
the same way. They're going seventeen or no. And I'm
not happy about it because they should deserve at least
(01:48:00):
two or three losses. But the reality is, if they're
doing this and barely getting away with it, when they
get firing on all cylinders, they're gonna be unsoppable. They're
going seventeen to zero. Okay, Number two, I like me
some Reid Shepherd. I wanted to become a jump shooter
because this team still needs perimeter threats, But I don't
(01:48:21):
know if ten minutes per game is going to necessarily
cut it. I have seen a lot of high draft
picks full the rockets, including now Cam Whitmore, a men
Thompson went down there. I think a short run down
to the G League to kind of get the jump
shot going for Reed Shepherd wouldn't be the worst thing
in the world, okay, because you already got a mend
Thompson backing up fret at the point, so if you
lost him for a few games just to go down
(01:48:43):
there and be a viper and score thirty five points
and knocked down in eight or nine threes. They wouldn't
be the worst thing.
Speaker 10 (01:48:48):
In the world.
Speaker 3 (01:48:48):
So dunk on Brownie correct, So I would say, read Shepherd,
a G League trip wouldn't be the worst thing in
the world for a while. Okay, Okay, Number three, there's
gonna be talk, and I don't don't agree with this talk,
but you're gonna hear a sports personality be mentioned in
a political campaign for twenty twenty eight. I would not
(01:49:15):
be completely surprised if Stephen A. Smith is being regarded
as a potential candidate in twenty twenty eight. Okay, he
was asked about it on The View just this last week.
You're watching the View, No, uh, before you tab on Twitter? Okay,
And I had to mute a lot of words. I
(01:49:35):
know you did. I know you did. But I just
get the sense that we are going to be in
a run here of atypical candidates. And I think that
Stephen A. Has ventured into political commentary more than the
last six months, and he has probably in his entire life.
And I don't think The View just brought that up
just for blank and giggles. Okay, so that's number three
(01:49:57):
and number four is call me not surprised when the
Texans beat the Cowboys by double digits next week, Ben,
it's Mike McCarthy's last game as the coach of the
Cowboy Mike McCarthy fired. I think it's he Jerry Jones
is gonna say, here's how it's gonna work. It's not
Jerry Jones' fault that Dak Prescott got hurt. It's not Jerry,
(01:50:19):
it's not it's you hate to blame the coach for everything,
but we need a change in philosophy. We've got to
readjust things. And I can't fire myself and the season's lost,
and the Commanders are great and the Eagles are great. Yeah,
might as well find out if I got somebody in
our system that i'd be worthy of replacing, as I'm
gonna get rid of Mike mccarth anyway, So to have
(01:50:41):
a Monday night home game in front of your cross
state rival, get your ass kicked in front of one
hundred thousand people, I would not be shocked if it's
Mike McCarthy's last game as a Cowboys coach next Monday.
See your take, is that you wouldn't be shocked or
that it is going to happen. No, it wouldn't be shocked. Well,
I guess nobody would be shocked, would they?
Speaker 24 (01:51:02):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:51:02):
No, I think there would be some people like, No,
Jerry doesn't fire. Jerry doesn't fire coach of midseason. This
is again going a typical of what he does. Okay,
but if you want me to further clarify, I'll say, yeah,
they should fire Mike McCarthy. It should be fire if
they lose a relatively easy Texans winning if it's a
game that goes down the final gun, or it's a
field goal game kind of thing. But if they lose
(01:51:24):
by ten points or more, which I believe they're going
to lose this week, bye, Okay, I think they should
let go to Mike McCarthy. So these are my four takes.
Chiefs are going seventeen or oer this season, much to
my chagrin after thinking they weren't going to do that.
Reied Shepherd should get some playing time in the G
League that he can get more reps. I wouldn't be
surprised if Stephen A. Smith is brought up in a
twenty twenty eight presidential campaign conversation, and I'm not talking
(01:51:47):
about just on a rainbow talk. So I'm saying that
there will be legitimately talk of who is the outside
of the box candidate that'll be the guy. And number
four pop Mike McCarthy probably should be fired if they
lose by double digits this week to the Texans next
Monday night. Those are the four which one am? I
telling you the truth? Connor, how are we feeling? I
(01:52:10):
feel kind of confident with one of the four already.
I'm ready throughout one and three I am as well.
I believe he's.
Speaker 26 (01:52:18):
Matt said something about he's going undefeated.
Speaker 3 (01:52:21):
And in a past a couple of weeks ago, I did,
and I'm changing my mind. I'm saying that you're changing
his mind from faking changed his mind. He's back on
and changing his mind from the mind correct. Actually everything
you said was completely accurate though.
Speaker 26 (01:52:34):
And then Steven A. Smith, he's not ready in no way, Yeah,
it's not's no way. I don't think he believes four
about Mike McCarthy should be fined. I don't think the
Cowboys are going to do that. And I mean reach
over to the G League's not a bad idea. Kim
Wentmore went down there and dropped twenty eight, so maybe
it's good for Sucker.
Speaker 3 (01:52:53):
I have bad news for you. We're one on the
same page. Okay, well, let's fine. I'm going with two
as well. All right, Chiefs aren't going seventeen to no.
I'm sorry, you're you're just playing with faith there.
Speaker 21 (01:53:08):
On that bed.
Speaker 3 (01:53:09):
I mean they got you know, if they man, they're voodoo.
The Chiefs voodoo magine the Taylor Swift curse. The Taylor
curse is real to other teams. Step and A Smith
is not running for office. There are way too many
skeletons in his life. Hm. You do some vetting with
Steven Edge. That would take about a minute and a half.
I think I don't think you can run either. Matt guys.
(01:53:30):
I feel kind of bad because I wouldn't necessarily think
that Reid going down to the g Leigue would be
the worst thing in the world. But Cam Wentmore was
a mid first round pick. Cam Wentmore was in a
massive shooting slump. The Rockets have Reen Shepherd. He's played
what how many games he played as an NBA player?
Speaker 8 (01:53:49):
Ten?
Speaker 3 (01:53:50):
I mean he's staying I wouldn't I think I think
that the Texans beat the Cowboys by more than ten
points at Mike McArthur should be fired. All right, we'll
see this good. Another long list and a long list
of bad takes in the segment. You can print these
out before. Look what does it say? Number four? Yeah,
(01:54:12):
you just type that. I did not just type that.
I can't do. You don't ever believe me. Here's the okay, well,
here's the reason why I pull up of this Monday
night football. It's the only game. It's the Texans, it's
the against the States team, America's team, and you get
your ass kick thirty seven to twenty. Dak Prescott is
not there. What is that precluded coaches from firing, owners
(01:54:36):
from firing coaches. It's like week eleven, you gotta have
you're gonna have an interim coach for six weeks when
you're when Dak Prescott is down. The Jets have zero
problem with this, and and Jerry Jones loves well, that's
because they thought they were gonna turn their season around.
How's that going? Arizona Cardinals say, hello, that's true. Okay, hmmm,
I think I think if it's a close one score game,
(01:54:58):
it's Okay. I think if it's a blowout where he's
embarrassed on national television and the next day on Sports
Center and the next day on all the national TV shows,
they're getting ridiculed even more. I think there's gonna be
a fallout. Now, if it's twenty seventy twenty four, then
I think he probably stays. Okay, I will say if
they lose by ten points, McCarthy will not be fired. Okay,
that would just be a better take. But this would
(01:55:19):
just take. It's not seed.
Speaker 8 (01:55:21):
You'd be right.
Speaker 26 (01:55:21):
So you don't think the Rockets are gonna send Reed
Shepherd to the GEUS.
Speaker 3 (01:55:24):
I don't think they're going to. Do you think they should?
I know that wasn't your take, but I'm just curious,
you know, not really because Cam was just shooting so poorly.
How many if I think Cam Elyane won three pointers
so far in the season before he got sent down.
I think there was some defensive lapses. I think it
(01:55:45):
was kind of a get down there and get your
mojo back. It's not looking good comfortable out there, though,
but I think Reid's getting a little bit more comfortable.
It's just have to come a playing time, so right now,
I would say, and again I'm more than able to
amend this. I would say, right now, the best way
for Reid to let the game slow down is by
getting in the game and letting it slow down naturally. Okay,
(01:56:06):
because I don't think G League makes the game slower, right,
what do you think the role of league is? The
role of yeah, to get some seasoning and to get
better prepared. It's this. I don't know if it's I
guess relative to Spanish or whatever, but I mean it's
obviously a huge step up from college. Yeah, it's yeah,
(01:56:26):
it's a minor league. You get some seasoning, okay, or
to fix build some confidence or get the confidence back.
I think that's what Cam went worse. I think Cam
is gonna be back next few days though, my guess.
All right, twelve forty four, it is the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven to one three two one two five
seven nine. We are done the rest of the week
(01:56:46):
except for Believe or Not, which is coming up at
one to fifty, and today's topic happens to be are
you talking to me? Yeah? I was gonna say, we've
kind of done this for a long time. Yeah, Jake
Baits ooh could you? Does he have a wiki page?
Speaker 21 (01:57:05):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:57:05):
I mean Jake Baits sold bricks, believe it. I'm not
doing Jake Baits. Screw Jake Baits. I don't like Jake
Baits at all. Jared Goff throw an interception to this
person yesterday, believe it or not. All all ten teams
that won with five interceptions? Oh god seven one three
two one two five seven out A seven one three
(01:57:26):
two one two five seven outy. Game Day Men's Health

Speaker 20 (01:58:29):
Riffit hstne like five slam a gemo, Yo, what's up
to your boy? Bummbat A trilog with the whitest man
in America, Matt Thomas.
Speaker 2 (01:58:38):
You and now tune in a sports talk seven to
ninety man your.
Speaker 8 (01:58:41):
Mar Sigitty go.
Speaker 3 (01:58:47):
Ununfortunate musical not tribute, but we will have to replay
those sad highlights of the Detroit game coming up at
the top of the hour. It is the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross seven to one three two one two
two five seven ninety lines are open. We just had
a bunch of folks drops. If you want to get
in now, you can do so at seven to one
three two one two five seven nine zero. So I
(01:59:11):
have the Texans like going eleven and six, losing all
the games they should lose to, which is Baltimore and
Kansas City, and winning all the games they should which
you put them at five and two. The rest of
the way you think four and three, you're think in
one of those five could be a slip ups. That
seems fair. I mean, I'm being a little presumptuous by
saying that they're gonna win every one of the games
they should win. Ce NFL Jaguars were a stupid penalty
(01:59:35):
away from possibly beating the vikings of all teams. Yeah,
that's true. Well, the Titans weren't really close to the
Chargers and they got destroyed by the Lions. They did
beat the Patriots. Eh. I just feel like this team,
this team is not good enough to the level where
I can say I can guarantee wins against bad teams. Still,
(01:59:56):
they've been be squeaking it out against bad team Take
your first sentence and stop right there. They're not gonn
So let me ask you this, how do you in
the towards the back half of the season become good enough.
You become good enough by protecting better, getting more this
offensive line. You've got one game, But is it schematics
or is it physicality it's getting beat I think it's
(02:00:16):
mostly schematics. It was a lot of physicality with Kenyon
Green unfortunately, I mean in Shaq Mason unfortunately. What's the
name of that defensive tackle for the Lions. It's really
really good. He was beaten up on them. Yeah, he
can get beat by tough uh Campbell to the linebacker
Allen McNeil. Allen McNeil was I mean, Lee McNeil is
(02:00:39):
a monster. I mean he's one of the better defensive
interior players and all football. So yeah, he was playing
d line for them too. He's gonna give a lot
of problem. Yeah, DJ Reader a little bit Texan great,
Texan's legend. DJ Reader, you've also gotten beat up by
DeForest Buckner. I mean you're you're, But you're also going
to play teams with good interior players in the playoffs.
(02:01:00):
So it is what it is. So they do have
to get better. I would say the communication and the comatics,
and without like looking back and watching the whole game
over again or anything, it seemed better yesterday certainly than
it was. I mean the bar was extremely low. Right
with a Jets game. They were all over the place.
There was constant pressure and just blown blocks and bad communication,
(02:01:24):
and unfortunately Kenyon Green getting destroyed. I think that can
get better. I think getting Nico Collins back makes you better,
makes you better. But also this team is teetering on
an edge to me, where if you do lose Nico
Collins again, if you do lose Joe Mixon at any point.
Obviously CJ. Stroud is a given, we don't even need
to talk about that. But I think those two players,
this team falls apart to where you just cannot afford
(02:01:45):
those losses because you've already lost digs, You've already lost
too much pro football focus. Those are grades for Tuesday,
correct typically generally. Yes, I wonder how Patterson and Scruggs
did in their new respective position. I'm curious as well.
Let's go to Arlington and talk to Roger on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Our time is twelve fifty
three seven one three two one two five seven nine.
(02:02:06):
If you want to jump in seven one three two
one two five seven ninety Roger, good afternoon, you're on
seven ninety.
Speaker 27 (02:02:11):
How you doing, guys? Love your show, Matt, thank you. Hey,
you know I'm a big Texan. Diehart fan.
Speaker 8 (02:02:17):
I'm gonna be in Dallas watching that game out there.
I think we're gonna feast on the team. And it's true,
we're gonna see uh McCarty get fired after that beatdown.
But here's my question. I saw, you know, does all
this go.
Speaker 27 (02:02:29):
On the players as far as uh, as far as
you know CJ.
Speaker 8 (02:02:34):
Stroud and all this Because it's a scheme game. You
have to build a scheme to win games. Correct, which
are your coaches?
Speaker 3 (02:02:43):
Yeah? I mean that makes sense. Yeah, I get it.
Speaker 27 (02:02:45):
Okay, So yesterday I saw a play. I don't know
who made the decision. I'm pretty sure that it had
to do with our coach. It was a fourth and
nine or a fourth and four which was laid into
the game. Uh, and then they put our fairborne out
there to make the field goal.
Speaker 3 (02:03:04):
Correct, well, it was it was too yeah, to get
the lead on a long field goal attempt that probably
the Texans not probably the Texans went conservative offensively, knowing
that our guy can kick sixty yard field goals or
thereabouts pretty easily.
Speaker 8 (02:03:18):
Exactly exactly.
Speaker 27 (02:03:20):
But I'm not a coach, thank god, because there's a
lot of pressure right now.
Speaker 8 (02:03:26):
But as as I was looking into the game.
Speaker 27 (02:03:31):
We were throwing a lot of short outlets and they
had the defense stacked.
Speaker 8 (02:03:35):
So my thing is, I think they should have gone
knowing that Fairborne had already missed a field goal. Does
that make sense?
Speaker 3 (02:03:44):
Try that one more time?
Speaker 8 (02:03:46):
Fairbourne had already missed a field goal.
Speaker 27 (02:03:49):
Correct, Yes, I think they should have gone for it
there and then and.
Speaker 8 (02:03:53):
Stealed the game.
Speaker 3 (02:03:54):
The only kick he missed was the last one. No, no, no, yeah,
he made everything else he made, plus, he made a
fifty yarder before the era in the game. So fifty
six yarder, yeah, Ron, No, you're you're you knew that
Kaimi has made those before in the past. I mean
he's had a pluthorrow of fifty yard field goal. As
a matter of fact, he's bailed the Texans on multiple
cages because he's hit plus. So I understand. I know
(02:04:15):
how they set it up. They set it up for
him to kick the long one. He's eleven of fourteen
this year fifty plus, pretty good. Fortunately he missed that one.
It's a fifty eight yarder. Their guy made the fifty
eight yarder and a fifty two yarder to win the game.
Your guy missed his fifty eight yarder. Unfortunately, it's obviously
(02:04:36):
more complicated than that, but that that's one of the
ways to look at it and why you took the
l Yeah. To me, anything beyond fifty five placing a
tremendous amount of blaming the kicker is fool's gold on that.
I I think in the NFL world today, fifty five
in should be made. Sounds crazy to say that, because
when I was growing up, fifty was like, oh my god.
Speaker 12 (02:04:57):
No.
Speaker 3 (02:04:58):
But today's kickers are stronger, they're more athletic, they don't
have beer guts except for Randy Bullock obviously, uh, but
they're supposed to make those. But fifty five plus, I
don't know how the weather was conducive for it, But
that doesn't really matter. That that's a that's a kick
that he that he's made a lot so far in
his Texans career, but to assume that he can make
(02:05:18):
it every single time is tough. But then that damn
Tom Ball storyline kicked in? Did it not? Late in
the game. I don't want to talk about it. You
want to hear about it? No, I don't want to
do it. Next seven one three, two, one two five
seven ninety seven one three, two, one two five, seven
nine zero final hour of the Matt Thomas Sho would
believe it or not at one to fifty. I want
(02:05:39):
to hear from you guys. I need to hear in
new lendings as well. Tell me expectations, have you finally
tempered them? And if somebody texted me earlier today? A
very simple question, sports Harvey, is the Texans honeymoon over?
(02:06:01):
Honeymoon still on the thought of a long vacation in
perhaps New Orleans on Super Sunday? Or are you in
one two three can coon in early January? Or are
we bickering about who forgot to bring the sunscreen? Seven
one three, two, one two five seven ninety Is the
Texans honeymoon over? You know what's not over is one

That's right, Big Bruce specials and one dollar chicken tenders

couple of sides, maybe some egg rolls that are stuffed

watch Monday Night Football and the Rockets all in one
locale at Big City Wings. Big brewce specials and one
dollar chicken tenders at Big City Wings and Big Citywings
dot com lunchtimers.
Speaker 1 (02:07:22):
This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 4 (02:07:26):
We're not gonna get it all at one sounk here,
so just one at a time.
Speaker 6 (02:07:29):
We'll do that.
Speaker 3 (02:07:30):
We'll play this out so we get three miss off
from the pork before we turn on. But we'll do it. Okay,
he said it.
Speaker 5 (02:07:39):
They get takeaways and they do right out of the
gate first and goals and truck trying to get back,
get it.
Speaker 3 (02:07:45):
Away to Marie till the n zone comes down to drunk.
Speaker 5 (02:07:55):
Look now crowd end the zone, huckers Brown and our seting.
Carlton Javes comes up with the pick.
Speaker 3 (02:08:04):
She's all from the nine. Saint Brown on the edge,
cut pluck because I'm.
Speaker 6 (02:08:09):
Gonna a Saint Brown touchdown.
Speaker 5 (02:08:11):
Detroit Lion right fat hit it kicked there earned the
job at the Lions from fifty eight to till the
game Bates, Justin son the Upright ties it in twenty three.
Speaker 7 (02:08:27):
For fifty two for the wind is just dude, just it,
Sony upright, Jake Bates, hometown hero, and the Lions have come.
Speaker 3 (02:08:39):
All the way back.
Speaker 9 (02:08:41):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (02:08:42):
The Texans offense Rossie in the second half was as
cold as ice. I had think zero points qualifies as
cold as ice. By the way, foreigner, all right, do it?
Speaker 15 (02:08:56):
Do it?
Speaker 22 (02:08:57):
Do it quick?
Speaker 8 (02:08:57):
Do it?
Speaker 3 (02:08:58):
Run to the discography nerrated. Unto the sography, we're probably rated.
Oh I didn't know we were. Seriously, Yeah, we're gonna
have to unfortunately, all right, all right, I would say
right now it's highly rated as one of the great
rock bands of the seventies. That's that's the bar, right now. Okay,
you just want their singles hits, right, yeah, yeah, feels
like the first Time Top ten, Cold as Ice Top ten,
(02:09:20):
Hot Blooded number three, Double Vision number two, Dirty White
Boy hit number twelve in nineteen seventy nine. I'm not
familiar with that one Blue Morning, Blue Day, fifteen, Head
Games fourteen, Urgent number four, Waiting for a Girl Like
You number two, I want to know what love is?
Number one. I'm thinking might be underrated, Matthew, say you
(02:09:45):
will top ten? All right there? First of all, underrated
because I don't have I think I've got one foreigner
song on my phone, which means I've underrated them. Eight
top ten hits. That's more than enough for casino a
running Cynthia Woods. That's pretty good. I'm you know what,
maybe they're underrated. Yeah, we you and I agree A
(02:10:07):
Tingon not way overrated, underrated, but a Tinge Houston Texans overrated,
underrated or properly rated. Well, if you're talking to Darlene,
she doesn't even know how many of the players' names are,
so she can't give you an answer. Umm, but she
overrates them. She's overrating them. I like my question better.
(02:10:29):
Is the Texans honeymoon over is the reality is that
we thought we being those have either considered yourself big
fans or in or battle Red Ross that you thought,
you know what, one game swing here or there, win
a game you're not supposed to win, be different than
you were a year ago, and you can go to Baltimore,
you can go to Kansas City, and you can go
knock them off. I don't think anybody in within the
(02:10:50):
sound of my voice right now believes the team can
jump on a plane go to either one of those
two scene teams or for that Matt, if they came
to our building energy, I think the Texans would be
favorite to enter win the football game. I don't think
they're gonna be favored. I'm gonna say, you get Nico
Collins back, you give this newly reconfigured offensive line a
couple of weeks of cohesion, and I think they can
(02:11:12):
beat it.
Speaker 13 (02:11:12):
Well.
Speaker 3 (02:11:12):
See, the problem is, here's the f And I'm not
saying it's false hope, because you have to play your
best every week. You can't just say we got a
dog crap upon it coming in. But the reality is
the Texan schedule is significantly softer in the next four
to five weeks. I think that's that's the perfect time,
the perfect time. Does it false Scruggs and Jared Patterson
(02:11:35):
as your center and Juice Scruggs as your left guard.
I don't know if we're not to see how the
games play out. Yeah, because we didn't have a whole
lot of confidence. They beat the Jaguars twenty four to twenty.
That was by the skin of their teeth. They were
barely beating the Bears and the Colts early on, and
there was a there was a lot of people, excuse me,
there was a lot of people saying and that this
(02:11:56):
is all the worst six and two team in football history.
They're not good. So it's about how the games play out.
How are you looking on the field. Are you dominating teams?
Can you snuff them out and beat them by twenty one?
Can you boat race somebody? They need to do that.
It's not if they're winning these games against Cowboys, Titans,
(02:12:17):
and Jaguars nineteen to seventeen on last second field goals,
then yeah, we're going to be concerned and alarm bells
should continue to go off. It's about how these games look.
So the question I have is, honestly, at this point,
are you like, you know what the schedule softens up?
We get Nico back, the offensive line can work in cohesion.
Maybe there's a philosophical heart to heart meeting between the
(02:12:39):
coaching staff and saying, hey, we've got to be we
got to doal some things up that are more aggressive,
mainly basically Demiko to Bobby Slowan. Maybe there's somebody that's
whispering into Dimiko's here. Don't keep settling for fifty four
yard field goals. They're just not as automatic as you think.
They are, as good a kicker as Kaymi Fairbands been
(02:13:00):
this year. Yeah, I think what has been a storyline
all year kind of one of the further down the
pecking order storylines has been the lack of aggression, and
I think that was on full display on Sunday. But
history Ross unfortunately is repeating itself. All these one score games, Yeah,
all this second half utility. It's not just a one off.
(02:13:24):
We've got a trend developing. And I don't know if
you can fix such a thing in the middle of
the season. I don't know you can. But I don't
know that the Tigers are going to change their stripes
in the middle of the season. And the good news
is they know it. We played that Joe Mixon bite earlier,
he said it himself, we are playing not to lose. Yeah,
(02:13:44):
but what was so what was that meeting for a
couple of days back then? What was the purpose of
that meeting that was for rallying the troops and covering
the spread? Baby three and a half with me? Wait,
let's walk through this here, your my cohort here says
that Joe Mason got up and said, hey, everybody, listen
to me. Right now, Vegas is as a three and
a half point dog at home. That's unexcitable winning to
(02:14:08):
cover this game. No, but we all thought, let's be honest,
we thought they were gonna get their ass kicked on
Sunday and they lost on a last second field goal.
Now that was There's a lot more into that, of course,
with Jared Goff and the turnovers. But the Texans four
steps turnovers, they were pressuring Jered Goff. Kamari Lassener was
making great catches. It's not like Jared Goff gifted all
of those to them. They were making plays.
Speaker 8 (02:14:29):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:14:29):
Of course, the the the the Hail Mary one was
a gift and it doesn't count and we shouldn't be
talking about that. But the Texans defense harassed. You made
them look like old Jared Goff. You had him shook,
you had him with two minutes left. They were trying
to run the ball out and get to the half.
They were running scared. So that was a great overall
defensive performance, especially in the first half. So credit to
(02:14:51):
the Texans there, just the offense and that second half
performances and the miskick by Keymie Fairbairn and the bad call,
the bad no call on the pass interference on that
last drive as well. You add it all up. The
Texans lost to close when the last second field goal
to the Detroit Lions, who are arguably the best team
in football, and you really take nothing away from that, unfortunately,
(02:15:13):
because if you'd have been Monolo monol with them and
yeah I got fifteen round heavyweight five, you're like, oh man,
we were just we needed one more possession. You had
a huge lead and you gave it up. Yeah, and
that's that hurts more. And the reason he is Texans.
A sixteen point lead, you're not supposed to give up,
especially at home with a rabid crowd. By the way
Lion fans showed up. I didn't realize Lion fans so
(02:15:36):
it's been a storyline for a while. The Lions fans
are I don't know why or how like they travel.
Speaker 2 (02:15:40):
By the way.
Speaker 3 (02:15:41):
I was in a casino on Sunday on Saturday night. Okay,
what I'm what I always say about stereotyping of Michigan
women is the case. It just is. What's that, Matt,
What's what's your stereotype of Michigan women. I'll tell you
off air, Yeah, one thirteen of the Mad Topic Show.
I don't want to you know it is what it is.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
(02:16:01):
one three two one two five seven ninety. Your question
for you guys to dial in right now is is
the Texans honeymoon over? Are we starting to deal in
the reality of this is at best, at best the
third best team in the AFC And what can they
do at this point of the season to change all that?
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety Rain
(02:16:21):
and wind is coming, cooler, temperature certainly on the way.
You got to keep the trees happy. And that's why
you got to call Martin Spoon more over at Affordable
Tree Service at seven one three six nine nine two
six sixty three Martin will come out with his crew.
He'll evaluate your trees and give you an estimate on
what it will go was going to take to make
sure you can give your trees the best chance of
survival during that sometimes harsh winners that we have. If
(02:16:45):
you've not had your trees deep root fed, if you
can't remember the last time you had your trees pruned
and evaluated for overall health, you call seven to one
three six nine nine two six sixty three. That's seven
one three, six nine nine two sixty sixty three, right
the number nine. You may not eat them today, but
I guarantee you the next thirty days you're gonna want
to have those trees looked at seven one three six
nine nine two six sixty three. Affordable Tree Service.
Speaker 12 (02:17:08):
Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:17:21):
We were gonna, uh try to get Gordy to come
in studio at some point today, but he's still chasing
Jalen Milroeh. Could you imagine tailgating too soon for hours
at Tiger Stadium? Yes, game days there, Yes, where Pat Mcat, Yes,
he convinces the fans to yell a sexual slur, not once,
(02:17:45):
but twice. It will go look on Twitter. You can
find it talking about doing things to the okay whatever
the tiger correct. Oh yeah, that's it's a it's a verb.
Yeah yeah. And then Jalen Milroe is like into the
house over and over again. They are running up and down.
Is Brian Kelly just, at the end of the day,
(02:18:07):
just a really overrated football coach?
Speaker 26 (02:18:10):
Hmm?
Speaker 3 (02:18:11):
I don't know enough about him. I mean, obviously for
a lot of success at Notre Dame. Yes, played for
a national championship. Yes, big money gets to LSU immediately
puts on this think Cajun accent when he doesn't really
have one, not from the grinding on recruits in that
little studio they had with the flashing lights. That was weird. Yeah,
and then losing football games. Yeah, with like Jayden Jayden
(02:18:34):
Daniels and he looks like a Darren Headlights Garrett and
that's my are pretty good. H Let's see first season
ten and four, ten and three, now six and three
are the LSU tagers. Yeah, I mean, I guess we
could get Gordy to assess. I'm sure he's extremely objective.
Oh my god, he hates Ala. He should be locked
on SEC. He should be called hated on Alabama should
(02:18:55):
be his right. He was at the Aggie game as
well when they lost, Right, yeah, sits out there for
hours and hours and hours and has to smell all
those people. Oh see, it's yeah, but it's it's you
know what it's like. It's like that commercial with Eli Manning.
You can win the tailgate, Matt, you never lose in
the tailgate, and I'm sure LSU fan wins the tailgate
almost every single time. Absolutely. But they were flying high
(02:19:20):
and unfortunately they've lost two league games. Yep, so out
of the playoffs. Now gonna be the Tigers.
Speaker 8 (02:19:28):
Think so?
Speaker 3 (02:19:29):
They were fifteenth and they just lost again, yep, I
think so. Now we got to talk about the other
school in the state of Alabama, the Auburn basketball team.
They beat my Cougars and congratulates of them. Sorry, Matt,
I swear to God. Usually when you have fights on planes,
you'd usually lose the next game by like at least
(02:19:50):
ten points, you know what Matt I mean. But sometimes
you get in a fight with your brother and it
brings you closer together. He can respect each other after that. Okay,
so we're traveled Friday that they were we were flying here.
They were flying on a charter from Auburn to Houston. Yes,
and I have the flight aware app, which I like
to say what kind of planes people are flying that
(02:20:10):
kind of thing. It was a chartered prop jet prop plane,
so it doesn't have all the creature comforts of a
prop plane. Yeah. Propeller Yeah, there's still there's still some
of those out there there. They put teams on the
propeller planes. Yeah, that seems extremely dangerous. I'm gonna assume
that Auburn's runway isn't huge or they dusting crops after
(02:20:31):
a while.
Speaker 2 (02:20:31):
I don't know, but.
Speaker 3 (02:20:33):
Those, some of the bigger ones probably seat sixty people
on them. Really. Yeah, and my guess is Auburn to
Houston's probably an hour fifteen minute flight tops. This is
shocking news to me. They got propeller jets flying that
far out of jeted propeller planes. Yeah, propeller yeah, huh
So they're up in flight, they're forty minutes into flight.
The flights an hour fifteen so they've got to be
(02:20:54):
at least halfway if not further to Houston. And all
of a sudden, everybody on the grounds like Auburn's coming back.
Really apparently two players where they're among many, were involved
in a scrape on this propeller plane and had to
go back to Auburn where the police were ready to
(02:21:15):
arrest people whatever they Again, the details are still very
sketchy about all this because everybody's kind of keeping it quiet.
They go to Auburn, they land, they handle their business,
they get I guess they get some They they get
the blood off the players faces and stuff, because apparently
ever thrown they get him stitched up. Could you imagine
being on a plane, I don't know, in a legitimate
(02:21:35):
pier six brawl breaks out in the middle of a
on a prop plane, on a propeller jet, on a
jet you can kind of get like a big seven
thirty seven. It was like it makes for still not
good idea and not a great idea happens on Spirit.
I mean every week, yeah Spirit, Yeah, you fly, you
fly a Legion or a Frontier or one of those airlines.
Yeah Spirit. They like, you get a free you get
a after your fifth flight, you get a free fight. Hm.
(02:21:57):
I like that, but you're on a prop you land seriously,
and then was like, what's gonna happen? The game is
gonna still be playing. Game's gonna play. And then they
get on the plane, they fly here and they then
go to Tote Center and beat my Houston Cougars fired
the squad up. As my son said, Bruce Pearl teams
(02:22:20):
always figure out a way to Bruce Pearl things. That's true.
Let me ask you this, if you have two players
fighting on a prop, didn't had to be a brawl today.
Somebody not want to just get up and interrupt that
bad boy. That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm thinking.
It's like a brawl because you're if you're trying to
break that up and then you catch astray and then
you start brawling too. I mean to turn the plane around.
And I'm assuming guys that are six four six five.
(02:22:42):
There's not a lot of week that's true. They must
have been in each other's seats or something. Maybe that's
what happened. Maybe somebody tried to recline their seat and
then somebody got pissed off about it. I don't disagree
with that. I'd brawl over that.
Speaker 10 (02:22:56):
Then.
Speaker 3 (02:22:56):
The other story of the weekend is that BYU and
Utah played each other in Salt Lake said it was
a late game, yes, and Utah jumped out to a
huge lead to stay with me ond this and lost
the game I think by one point. They didn't score
a single point in the second half. That happened. There
was a sack of the BYU quarterback around the one
(02:23:18):
or two yard line, but it was called back. It
was taken overturn by a holding call on Utah's defensive back.
BYU keeps possession and then BYU goes on to kick
the field goal to win the game. Mark Harlan, I
believe his gentleman's name, is the athletic director at Utah.
He before the press conference speaks where Kyle Whittingham, the
(02:23:41):
Utah coach, comes up on the podium. Mark Harland goes
up there and rips the crap out of the Big
twelve officiating crew. He said, we were happy to join
the Big twelve and but this game was stolen from us.
I looked at the replay. It was somewhat ticky tack,
but it was definitely a hold. It looks like holding
to me.
Speaker 2 (02:24:00):
It was.
Speaker 8 (02:24:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:24:01):
Every official that you see on TV said that's a hold.
And on top of the fact, mister Harland forgot to
mention that his Utah youth did not score a single
point in the second half. You can't bitch about that.
So he rips the Big twelve on late Saturday night yesterday,
ross the Big twelves like Mark Carlin, shut yo, bumass up.
(02:24:22):
We're finding your ass forty thousand dollars and a public
reprimand they should have find him more.
Speaker 8 (02:24:29):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:24:29):
My guest is Harlan's making a milli so that forty
thousand is nothing to him. That's something. That's still something.
It's a Hawaiian vacation for you and three of your
closest friends. I just so, the argument being that they
were trying to keep Why the Big twelve officials are
trying to keep BYU in the playoffs? The officials were
(02:24:49):
I think the call was b why the Big twelve
officials suck? Ironically enough, the crew that worked that game
apparently was primarily full of XPEC twelve officials. No, they
gotta they gotta land somewhere. Isn't it weird though? That
why wouldn't I mean the ad hadn't have a few cocktails.
Now that's salt like Citi where they don't drink as much. Yeah,
it's a near beer, and the beer is not nearly
(02:25:11):
a powerful potent if you would ever call it. But
you can, as an ad after your team doesn't score
a single point in the second half, go up there
and bitch about anything. But Eddy did he himself forty
thousand dollars?
Speaker 8 (02:25:23):

afternoon Wild Card Game Weekend Energy Stadium. Le's go. It
feels about right. I don't know now because the they're
putting the they're putting games on Peacock. Now, okay, so
let's do this. Let's let's start a road clip. We're
going to talk to our body. By the way, I
watched the game on Peacock because look, Infinity get it together.
(02:29:08):
The picture quality is better and it was closer to
live on Peacock. So I watched the game on Peacock.
You did it? Looks great. They got Premier League action
on there as well.
Speaker 8 (02:29:22):
I like the app.
Speaker 3 (02:29:23):
Okay, Peacock's good. It's every band of NBC just a
streaming service apparently, they're hemorrhaging money with it though, Well,
I mean, duh, yeah, they're looking for mergers. Well, I
mean Paramount plus the same thing with the CBS stuff.
I mean, it's just crazy. Oh, it's owned by Comcasts.
(02:29:47):
Actually expected losses hopefully to improve in twenty twenty four.
They lost two point seventy five billion last year. I
wonder if it's because of the of the sports acquisitions,
or it was because of the operating cause or the
the I mean, is the WWE part of that too.
I think at some point the money they're spending on that,
apparently they've they've already lost eight hundred million, over eight
(02:30:09):
hundred million dollars this year as well. So remember one
games used to be on two, eleven and thirteen. We
were just happy with that. It's going back like thirty
okay to channel two, Channel eleven. Channel I was like two. Well,
I was like, I was like February eleventh, I was
gonna look something up and I forgot. Okay, dang it. Sorry,
(02:30:30):
it's my fault. It is your fault, but that's my fault.
We're talking about the peacock Is them a nickname for
the network? Okay, excuse me, yeah, I'm fine. Like when
they run around the offices. Like if you remember when
when when Warner Brothers had a TV network, they would
not call it the Warner Brothers never they called the
wa ub And now it's a CW. All right, what
(02:30:52):
do they what's the nickname for the Peacock Network? I
don't know of anyone? Okay the PC. Sure, Doug in
South Padrea at one thirty six high, Doug.
Speaker 28 (02:31:03):
Guys, how we're going good? No, it was a tough
week to be both a Cougar fan and a Texan fan.
And like everybody, you know, the games get over, you're
pretty upset and sleeping on it. I've kind of changed
my position. You know, when the Cougars lost to Auburn,
that was the hell of the game. I was upset
with the players. When the Texans lost the game we
should have won. I was upset with the coaches, just
(02:31:25):
like everybody else was. And after sleeping on it, you know,
against Auburn, their best player, that low post guy, the
All American tugler, was continually leaving him and running to
the free throw line to double team the guard and
then trying to run back and guard that guy. And
it was just easy scoring and it was something Samson.
I mean, you can't really ever criticize Calvin Sampson, but.
Speaker 21 (02:31:47):
It was adjustment we never made. It's why we lost.
When it comes to the Texans, everybody's on the coaches,
and I was as upset as everybody else was. But
if you think about it, you know that first and
goal on the three, and Juwe Strugs has a golden
call which killed that drive that should have been a touchdown,
and then the past that never made it to Tank Dell,
(02:32:07):
there was nobody in CJ's face and he just, you know,
to a dying quail, and it got inter subject. If
both those that happened, we would have won that game,
or if even one of them would have happened, and
the coaches would have been modern. So I guess my
take is, I just I know the coaches are getting
really really ringed, and probably they should, but those two
mistakes cost you the game, and that's on the players,
(02:32:27):
not on the coaches.
Speaker 3 (02:32:29):
Yeah, I thank you Doug for the phone call. Good
to your voice. Ross. I When what's the proper balance?
And this isn't all sports, as sports fans, as broadcasters,
when do we when Are we going to start putting
more of this on the players the throw to? Are
they tempted to throw a tank? Dell? There is nothing
that Bobby Slove could possibly have done to draw up
(02:32:50):
any better of a play than that he was wide
open by himself in the end zone. In the end zone,
it's a great play. Holding calls illegal four Masons fall star,
I mean the offensive line coaches. I couldn't even name
him if you paid me to. Is getting the heat
like three or four weeks in a row if your
guys are underperforming. Look, listen, let's just call this as
(02:33:11):
is what it is. Titus Howard has underperformers. A first
round pick. Larry Tunsel isn't worth the money that he's
been spent on. He's just not.
Speaker 26 (02:33:20):
He's not.
Speaker 3 (02:33:21):
He's not all world. He's good, but he's not. He's
paid like he's a top five tackle and he hasn't.
He's been good, like you said, but not a top
five tu Green, Uh Bust Scruggs second year player to
be determined. Patterson probably just a swing. Who am I forgetting?
(02:33:42):
Who's a game that came in for Toma Mason, Blake Fisher,
Blake Fisher to be determined. He's not good, but he's
also a first round Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. Shack
Mason good, not great, can get beat by by the
better interior. Probably paying being overpaid, but you know what,
when you're trying to rebuild an offensive line for a
team that had not taste the flaps in a year,
you have to overpay for guys. But let's let's not
(02:34:05):
hide who these people are. Did you notice on the
Sunday Night Football, now we had spotty Internet for part
of our flight, that they always put the Pro Football rankings? Yes,
did you see there were very few top ten on
either side of the Texans. Even the secondary was like
Kamara Lassi was considered just okay, Pecher was considered just
(02:34:25):
I mean they were. There was nobody like number six
in the on the PFF. Now, none of the PFF
does everything, but they give you some sort of gauge
a just comparing players of similar positions. This is about
the team that was thrown out there, which goes to
the general manager who creates a team. Obviously, Dimiko is
(02:34:47):
not bringing players here that he doesn't like, and that
Nick Cassia's like, too bad. You have to have him
in fact, there was one player that Demiko wanted here
very bad. That's alis He's been fantastic great. He knew
who he was and said, get your ass here, help
me out now. I got uncomfortable. And Chris Collinsworth was
comparing him to Fred Warner. It's like he's not on
(02:35:09):
Fred Warner's planet. But also Fred Warner is a freaking
nature but as he's all show here has been very
good for the Houston Texans. And by the way, I'll
tell you there is a Texan who is number one
in their position on Pro Football Focus. Ood. I have
to guess if you want offensive defense, offense number one
(02:35:29):
not gonna be C Jay, not gonna uh, I'm gonna
go Joe Mixon. Nico Colin really the number one graded
wide receiver on Pro Football Focus. Good hands, good separation,
good speed, good yards after catch. It makes about that
makes good sense, and you're gonna get him back and
you're gonna be better. Do you think it was kind
(02:35:51):
of wonky how things turn out this weekend? With not
only did he practice Friday? Yeah, what was that?
Speaker 28 (02:35:57):
It was?
Speaker 3 (02:35:57):
It was winersmanship stuff. Why did they activate him? Because
I was ready to put him in a fantasy lineup.
Why did they activate him? In the Saturday Everyone's like, oh,
he's off the list, blah blah blah blah blah. And
then Sunday morning we wake up and he's like he's
been considered in active. Yeah. I think it's one hundred
percent gamesmanship, or maybe they thought he was close and
(02:36:18):
then they were like, you know what, let's give it
another week. I don't know that that's that's a question
for them, and they'll speak. Uh, he'll speak tomorrow. I
think because they're taking they're taking Wednesday off. Maybe they
were trying to confuse Nimitz legend Aaron Glenn. By the way,
Aaron who's the next head coach on those coordinators, both
of them, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, I think are
(02:36:39):
gonna they're gonna get interviews. Ben Johnson, I think did
get interviews. You remember, I'm guarantee you we can go
back and look at their checks. People were like, please, Bobby, Bobby.
I think I defended him more than most. I think
he's he's a good coach. I think he's good too.
I didn't think he would be seriously considered. I did
say in a gut feeling that he would be gone
at the end of this year. I was thinking for
(02:37:00):
positive reasons, perhaps on a negative reason, but I think
people want him out of here.
Speaker 18 (02:37:04):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:37:05):
To me again, offensive coordinator, it's what you're given, you
know what, Bobby slugs given. He's got one super awesome,
amazing wide receiver gone, he's got one running back who's
really really good, but not much behind that, and he's
got a subpar offensive line, and he's got a quarterback.
I don't care if you want to disagree with me
(02:37:25):
until you're blue in the face. I think he's lost
his confidence. I think I think, I think disagree. I
think there's I think there's here's pressing right now for
the first time in his young NFL career, and it's
okay to press, especially with the fact that you don't
trust your offensive line. I firmly believe that C. J.
Stroud does not trust his offensive line.
Speaker 2 (02:37:42):
Ross.
