Speaker 1 (00:02):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Tenh two inhe Town. Good morning, everyone, and welcome to
a Tuesday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Ross has the day off he believe can be found
in Nova Scotia today. I hope everything is working well
for his worldwide vacation. Dan Matthews, normally in with me
at this point, is running late.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Such a rookie move, Connor McGovern.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Don't you know when you live in the burbs like
we do, you gotta leave like two hours early. Oh yeah,
So we will give us some game to to our
buddy Dan when he gets here coming up in a
few minutes. We have a very busy show for you
today and we look forward to having you with us
all the way until two o'clock this afternoon. I'm coming
to you from Minneapolis, where it's twenty degrees here, and
(00:55):
you're like, Matt.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
We've all been in cole Weather. Shut up. Okay, that's fine.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I can tell you this first of all, that we
are the nicest city in America. Now, some of you
are meaning to me on Twitter, but that's a different
issue for a different time. We are, generally speaking, a
city of wonderful, nice people. Our women are beautiful, our
food is amazing. We've got great culture, lots of stuff
to do, interesting sports teams. But there are other great
(01:22):
places too in Minneapolis. I lived here for three years,
and I promise I not to do this every single
time I get up here to do this. But I
don't know how in the hell I did it, Because
what's the type of your connor back home? Is it
going to be in the seventies at this point something
like that?
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Yeah, I'd say today it's in the mid seventies. It
was a little bit fre once morning, like the sixties
to start the day.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Oh twenty freaking miserable degrees. I don't know how people
do it. And the crazy thing is is that when
I lived here for three years, while I enjoyed my neighborhood,
I had great neighbors and lots of nice people I met.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
If you're not from here, they don't I want to hear.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
You bitch about how cold it is, because ninety percent
of the people that live in the state are from
this state, and that's all they know.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
They don't know what it's like.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
To have a seventy degree late November day. Now I
understand a few if you want sweater weather or some
of you want to wear hoodies and whatnot, and I
get that, but I'm telling you you come up here.
Like we walked to dinner yesterday, it was like a
half mile from my hotel to the restaurant we went to,
and I was like, I got to get back to
(02:28):
Houston as soon as possible. Like tomorrow we're gonna be
in Philadelphia. Rockets are It's forty five degrees there. That
is like a significant warm up to what twenty degree is.
Degrees are so for any of you, and this is
just my daily little advice to you, not that you
have to take it, but for any of us that
bitch and Mona complain about one hundred and four degrees
(02:48):
in July and August and September, just remember it's always
going to be better than twenty degrees and windy. And
that's my weather message message for today. All right, on
the radio program today, we will have coming up at
eleven thirty your gut feelings. This is where you make
your sports predictions and we will get to those. How
(03:09):
we did last week, I will do this week. That'll
be coming up as we do that on a weekly
basis on Tuesdays, we had the news at noon. We
have at twelve thirty Connors NFL rewind from last night.
We'll get to that some of the big things that
happened from the NFL this past weekend. At one thirty,
we will talk with Willie Fritz. He is athletic is
(03:30):
the head football coach of our beloved Houston Cougars. Cougar's
wrap it up their season with a late night tilt
in Approval this Saturday, and it's supposed to be the
coldest game, at least for regular season. Why is the
Cougars have ever played. I don't know if that's gonna
be the case, but it's gonna be pretty damn cold.
I will be in Utah for that one, just because
I'm a sucker for punishment in cold weather. But the
decision was made, if you've not heard, if you were
(03:51):
a Cougar fan, Kevin Barbie. Barbie, the offensive coordinator has
been relieved of his duties and so the Cougars will
have a new offensive in or at least for one game.
It is the quarterbacks coach Sean Bell, and we will
hear from what coach Fritz had to say about making
this change with one game left to go. Look, the
Cougar's offense this year has just not been good. It's
(04:12):
been shut out a couple of times, two straight weeks
without an offensive touchdown. It's just not good. And it's
going to need a talent infusement, that's for sure. And
obviously coach Fritz deciding there needs to be a change
in the coaching situation as well with one game remaining,
so we'll talk to him about that. We have the
Rockets tonight here in Minneapolis taking on the Wolves in
a playing tournament game, not playing I always want to say,
(04:35):
end season tournament game. If the Rockets win this game,
they will advance to the knockout round, which means they
will win their group and it will be one of
the eight teams that will have a chance to make
it to a final four, and those final four teams
will go to Las Vegas to play for potentially a
half million dollars. You know, these NBA players have got
(04:55):
to strive to make ends meet, and so this half
million dollars will go a long way towards making that happen.
So we will obviously get some Rockets chatter going on that.
We have another coaching firing in college football, and it
does relate to somebody that we all know, and I
think most people love, some people tolerate, but most people love,
and that involves a former Texas football coach looking for work.
(05:17):
We had last night's game between the Baltimore Ravens and
the Los Angeles Chargers, and then we have Demiko Ryans
doing his normal Monday get together with the media, and
I know we're gonna play some of the audio coming
up in the next segment of the show. Again, we
need to interpret what Tomiko had to say and whether
(05:38):
or not he believes it, or he's just putting on
a brave face, or he is saying one thing publicly
and then.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Thinking about other things privately.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
So we'll let you hear some of the audio from
Demiko's from yesterday's press availability. Jalen petrie situation on the
injury front does not sound very good.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
He's got a peck.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Injury, and most players at Peck injuries have to miss
significant period of time, if not the entire season, and
so I don't know if the.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Texans are trying to keep.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Glass half full in this, but usually Peck injuries are
a significant loss of time, so the Texans will be
looking for some safety help as they get ready for
this weekend's game with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
So we got a lot of little things to get to.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
There's also a report from Bob Nightingale today that says
that the Astros may have been an offer in the
one sixty range.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
And that's not going to be enough.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Apparently mister Bregman and his agent, Scott Boris wants two
hundred million dollars is part of the deal.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
So we will get to that as well. Look who just.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Arrived in the Sports Talk seven ninety studios, the one
and only Dan Matthews.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Dan, how was a drive this morning?
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Boy?
Speaker 6 (06:50):
You know what?
Speaker 7 (06:51):
Shout out to everybody right there on West Loops South.
You know, nothing says hey, it's the holiday season, Like, hey,
let's get into an accident and screw up everybody else's day.
I left my house at nine o'clock and on the
GPS it said I would be here by about nine thirty.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Yeah, And then I was.
Speaker 7 (07:09):
Like, okay, well, if that's the case, you know shows
and you know Hayes and the Barn, we're good to go.
I'll stop and get a quick breakfast sandwich where it
took me one minute to run into the place, grab
the breakfast sandwich out of the heater and a red Bull,
and get back in the car. And all of a sudden,
I start seeing the time is going nine forty five,
nine fifty five and.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
Even higher and higher, and uh, yeah, you know.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
It's just nice when people pay attention to what they're
doing and don't get into a fender bender and it
messes up everyone's day. Yeah, accidents happened, though, unfortunately. I
mean I've been a part of a few of my life.
I got to be honest. Some have been my faults,
some have not been.
Speaker 7 (07:48):
No, I get it, and trust me, I've been there
too as well. I've you know, gotten pulled over by
Johnny Law before as well for going too fast.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
But it's just a lot of times too.
Speaker 7 (07:59):
And you drive around on these roads and you know,
we hear whenever, you know, Ac does his reads promo
Karen Law. He mentions it as well, that you get
a lot of people who do exactly what they tell
you not to do. The distracted driving. Oh hey, I've
got to send off this text. No you don't. There's
probably in most cars. Car play for a reason for
(08:20):
you to be able to speak it, and if it's
really that important, pull over and send the text and
get out of my way and don't inconvenience me.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Man, you you sound kind of preachy today.
Speaker 6 (08:32):
It's prime time for the holiday season. Let's just say that.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
Okay, yeah, a turkey this year, So I'm not handling
the turkey. What I am handling, though, is my dad's
famous Holy Trinity cornbread dressing, which you know, I kept
hearing on the show previous about stuffing out of a box,
which I quickly reminded them down here, we don't call
(08:58):
it stuffing number one, but number two. If you've got
the ability, don't make it for nothing. Out of a
box shows Hey I made this with love.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Yeah, but when you're eating it, do you really care
where it came from?
Speaker 6 (09:14):
You can tell the difference.
Speaker 7 (09:15):
I can absolutely When I have my dad's dressing, Absolutely
I know the difference. And some people put apples in it,
I'm like, no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Just don't put raisins in it. Anybody that puts raisin
anything just ruins it.
Speaker 7 (09:28):
I'm at that's that's another you know. I will say
this though, you know, because I'm a chicken salad guy.
I'm assuming you are as well. For the longest time,
I would try to fight the urge for the grapes
in the chicken salad.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Yeah, chicken salad. Yeah, I know what.
Speaker 7 (09:43):
Yeah, but I mean I you know, finally I was like,
all right here, let me try it. I loved it.
Like the balance of flavors was outstanding. I was like,
you know, grapes are delicious. You clearly can't add grapes
to something and not gold. This adds something to it.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
I get you on that.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
It was.
Speaker 7 (09:57):
It's it's a good move. So yes, I mean, look,
homemade always tastes better. And you know the way that
my dad makes it, I mean it's meticulously made. I
mean he will bake the cornbread himself, and then now
that he's got grandkids, he's you know, put them to
work in terms of, hey, break up the corn bread here,
(10:19):
and then of course it's got to be fine. It's
got to be finally broken down, and if it's not,
then you have to keep breaking down the corn bread
otherwise it's not going to be ready to go.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, another show in the marketplace is going to take
about breaking down corn bread. Some people will break down
cover two. Some people will break down a two to
three zone defense in basketball. We break down corn bread here, or.
Speaker 7 (10:39):
Ask the offensive coordinator about why he wasn't wearing a
hat in a game.
Speaker 6 (10:43):
I mean, you know we could do that too.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
No, we don't do that.
Speaker 6 (10:46):
No, no, no, and we never will either.
Speaker 8 (10:49):
No.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
All right, So CJ stroud it was a headline on
today's first Take show.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
You ever watched that show? Hopefully not, I.
Speaker 6 (10:57):
Try to say out of the shallow end of the pool.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yeah, but it was is the headline when I almost
almost screen captured to put it on uh social media.
But it's like, as CJ regressing, We will get into that.
But I do want to hear what Dimiko had to
say coming about back from our first time out of
the show. And I want us to believe or not
believe what Dimiko was saying, and is he is his
(11:22):
glass remaining half full on a football team that has
gone through a bunch with four of six losses and
last four of the six have been losses.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Correct, I believe properly?
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Yeah, no, I believe you're right.
Speaker 7 (11:35):
So I mean what they've lost two out their last
or three out their last four If I'm not mistaken, right?
Speaker 5 (11:40):
All right?
Speaker 3 (11:40):
So is the chipper Dimiko Ryans still what you want.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
To hear at this point we'll hear from some of
his comments next seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven nine.
If you want to get in Matt here in Minneapolis,
Dan is back off the streets and indoor seven ninety
studios at in Houston seven one three two point two
five SEVENATI.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Our time is ten fourteen.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Dan falling
in on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
NINTI lunchtimers, Lunchtimes.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
This is the Matt Thomas Show, ten nineteen.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I'm Sports Talk seven anti matt here in Minneapolis Dan
backing our Houston studios.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Dan. The press conference.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
With the head football coach of your beloved Houston Texans,
Dimiico Ryans this Monday and around two thirty you guys
are chopped it up a little bit yesterday. What do
we find from the highlights and what are we to believe?
And what are we to believe is him being polite
and when it comes to coach speak.
Speaker 7 (12:41):
Rallying the troops, that's pretty much what it is in.
Uh oh, by the way, I guess this might be
a replay your c J. Stroud topic is up, So
I'm glad to see that the morning to midday TV
network sports shows are taking a break from Cowboys and
Lebron talk.
Speaker 6 (12:56):
But that's another story for another time.
Speaker 7 (12:58):
But rallying the troops Demiko yesterday, of course, I mean
we've heard it all right, Matt. We've heard of players
only meetings, one led by CJ, one led by Joe Mixon,
and then the other day. Hey, everybody's got to look
themselves in the mirror. That's what Aziz al Schaer told
the rest of the team. Well, Demiko says, it really
(13:21):
just comes down to, hey, you got a job to do,
just do it.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (13:25):
For us, we just got to go do it like
it's we got a lot of cleaning up to do,
which we go through the film and our guys understand
what we have to do, but we just have to
go do it. Like as I told our guys, we
don't need a big meeting and nothing needs to be
said or talked about.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
We just got to go do our job.
Speaker 6 (13:44):
So there you go. No more meetings. We don't need
him anymore.
Speaker 7 (13:47):
Hey, Like, you know what, it almost kind of reminds
me of And I know that you've never watched The Office,
but the kind of the running storyline of it was
Michael would always say everyone into the conference room, and
then you'd have people rolling their eyes, all right, fine,
what's this going to be about? Like pretty much anybody
that's ever worked in an office can relate. But I
mean that's pretty much what Demiko's saying. Hey, we're not
(14:09):
going to the conference room.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Like, we know we need to play better, we know
that we need to stop having pre snap penalties, we
know that we are beating ourselves like all of those
different things, and I'm on board with it. Well, you know,
the reality is this everybody is. I think if you
over meet and this is a football locker room, this
is a boardroom of a fortune five hundred company, this
is a restaurant. If you continue to have meetings over
(14:33):
and over and over again, they just they become hollow.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
They don't in one ear and out the other.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
And my guess is when you've had as many of
these quote unquote meetings the Texans have had, and history
repeats itself by making the same sort of mistakes. I
think Tomiko's right, enough of meetings. You've got to fix this.
You know what you can do. We were playing at
a very high level earlier this year. We have faltered
in some very key categories. And instead of having these
(15:00):
conversations where we're studying the film over and over again,
and you know, I think he right there is like
I don't want to continue to sound like a broken record,
but unfortunately he sounds like a broken record these days.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
Well, I mean it's also too. I mean it's because
of good reason. It's the same stuff all over and
over again. I mean it's the pre snap penalties. It's
two guys moving in motion and it wipes away a touchdown.
It's an offensive lineman too far down the field and
again wipes away a touchdown. I mean it's things like that.
And then on top of it all, I mean, you know,
we broke down the inventory of penalties they had against
(15:33):
Tennessee on Sunday, four of them on special teams. I mean,
a couple of holdings in there and an unnecessary roughness.
Like it's kind of to the point where I'm guessing
that exactly what you said. The message to the team
is enough enough talk, enough of oh, hey we have
to do this, Like do the job. Like it's really
just that simple. Just do the job. Like you've been
(15:56):
playing football long enough. You know what's a penalty, what's not,
and what you can and can not do. So just
do it the right way and we're not having this discussion.
He continues on. He is the head coach, he is
the leader, he is the largest voice in the room.
So he takes that job incredibly seriously. He says, Hey,
the team ready to go.
Speaker 6 (16:14):
That's my job.
Speaker 9 (16:15):
Yeah, it's my job to help all of our guys
to make sure you know, as the head coach, is
my job to make sure we're all locked in. It's
not just CJ. Of course he owns up to his mistakes,
but it's it's not only CJ. It's it's everyone on
the entire team. Like, it's not not just him. Everybody
has their one play here or there that can end
up end up hurting you. But at the end of
(16:37):
the day, mistakes happen in football, right, That's that's the
game we play. Mistakes happen. Teams exploit mistakes sometimes sometimes
they don't, right, but it's about how you finished the game.
And we still had an opportunity there to finish the game,
and we did it.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (16:54):
I mean, that's that's as as point blank as you
can be about it. I mean, he's not wrong. I mean,
this has been a time team that at the beginning
of the season we were all lamenting about, oh, they're
in close games, but they were winning those close games.
And I was the one who thought at the time, Matt,
that this is going to benefit them because when you
do play against Baltimore, you do play against Kansas City,
(17:16):
that's the type of game you're going to be in.
And I understand the competition is going to be even
better against them. But if you don't feel concerned in
those situations that you're not gonna be able to come
through with a win, then it can benefit you. But
all of a sudden, I think we've kind of realized
the other side of this of oh, yeah, those mistakes
we were making, everything we were doing against I don't know, Jacksonville, Indianapolis,
(17:38):
any of these other teams that are kind of tomato
cans compared to those guys.
Speaker 6 (17:43):
Yeah, it's starting to show up.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Well, here's the thing, and every penalty hurts, but there
are going to be some penalties in the course of
a game that are frankly expected, because every every NFL
team does. I'm talking about pass interferences, talking about illegal
blocks in the back on kicker and punt returns. I'm
talking about frankly offensive holdings. You want all that stuff
(18:07):
to go away, and on the offensive holding stuff that
just means that either your technique is bad or athletically
you can't stay up with the pass rush is coming
your way, and that's more times than not, well, I mean,
in the hold on. The penalties to me that drive
me crazy are the false start penalties, the illegal man downfield,
(18:29):
the two men in motion That to me, dan is
stuff that is people that commit those penalties are mentally
checked out of the play, and that to me would
piss me off more for Demiko than the holds, the
pass interferences, the legal blocks, because unfortunately, the sport itself
(18:50):
lends itself to those types of penalties on a fairly
regular basis.
Speaker 7 (18:53):
Well, I mean, and especially this year, they're exacerbated because
it's been more prevalent. You've been having these issues week
in and week out, and it's funny enough. You know,
last night the mannings I usually whenever Peyton and Eli
are on, I'll watch them just because I like, you know,
just the way that they look at the game and
the way they explain it. But they had Mike Vrabel
on and he was talking about dealing with you know,
(19:15):
the holdings and the pre snap penalties and all these
other things, and I mean it's things that you work
on in practice. I mean, I haven't been out at
Texans practice and forever, but I have to believe they
have officials out of practice. Most teams do now, I mean,
like I understand it's also too you tell a guy, hey,
on that player right there, make sure your techniqu's better,
(19:36):
you know, be in better position so you don't have
to hold.
Speaker 6 (19:38):
Okay, we just did it again.
Speaker 7 (19:40):
Like it's kind of to a certain point where are
we kind of dealing with a team that's full of
guys who just can't comprehend it much less can't do
what's required of doing the job the right way. I mean,
if that's the case, then it's an even larger issue,
because then it's a you know, it's an evaluation and
a develop issue with this team at this point, which
(20:02):
I hope it's not. I mean, I understand too where
this team is at. I mean, I've had the rational people. Hey, everybody,
calm down. They're seven and five, they're in first place.
I just think that more than anything, it's two things
meeting up. It's angst of wanting to finally get past
the divisional round, but it's be also too as well,
believing that this team should be better than they are.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Well, if you watched Baltimore last night against the LA Chargers,
Houston Texans fans, you should be very very scared of
what that team can do away from Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Was it five?
Speaker 2 (20:36):
It was five straight possessions, they scored point or four
at least at least four of them, and the game,
frankly was the final score was closer than the game
was because when Baltimore turned it out in the second half,
they were pretty damn explosive. And Lamar Jackson was fantastic
last night. And that'll be a game that you'll see
on Christmas. But first things first, you gotta get you
got to start feeling better about yourself and beating a
(20:57):
Jacksonville team on Sunday seven every two, one, two, five,
seven nine, if you want to jump in seven one, three,
two one, two, five, seven nine zero. I think Demico
saying all the right things, but man, the podium stuff is,
he's probably getting tired of it. He needs his team
to execute and not make some of the silly mistakes
that we have seen during these recent losing times seven
(21:19):
one three two one two five seven nine. If you
want to join in, we have gut Feelings coming up
at eleven thirty. We have Connor's NFL re one at
twelve thirty, and Willie Fritz on the offensive coordinator shake
up that is today at one thirty.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Right now, a word.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
For the good folks at Underdog Fantasy, and they could
be great folks, especially if you can outsmart underdog Fantasy.

anything either one of those sports and make some money
with it. That's the added value of watching sports and

That should be my alter ego, and they've got Dan
Matthews back in Houston. Nice to have all of you

probably have a week off because you're in school or
your kids are around, and you take some vacation times.
(23:27):

I've never had a chance because I'm busy on sales
calls or I working nine to five, I can't get
to the phone, We're more than welcome to join us here.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Everybody's always welcome, I always.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
I'd like to give a special shout out to those
of you that don't normally get a chance to call
the show, and you are welcome to do that at
seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
By the way, the folks in in the embetting world
are not nearly as bullish Dan on the Texans UH
something called a website that we will not mention it
they don't spend money with us. We'll be saying that
(23:59):
the Texans have gone from on November eighteenth as a
twenty two to one favorite to win the Super Bowl
to now a thirty to one favorite. That's no surprise
when you dropped four of six.
Speaker 7 (24:13):
Yeah, that's usually not an ideal scenario to inspire confidence
with people who want to go to the window and
place the wager on you. But now, I mean, that's
increased value for you if you think that maybe the
Texans can live up to Joe Mixon's words of getting
hot at the right time and being able to make
that run.
Speaker 6 (24:30):
So, I mean that's the way to look at it is.
Now you just get.
Speaker 7 (24:34):
More increased value. Usually with situations like this, it decreases
in value. But now you might have a better chance
of you want to head over to Lake Charles.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Yeah, I wonder how you can go.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
I've never put I've never done those kind of prop
bets futures. I wonder how long you can go before
ultimately they I guess you go all way to the playoffs, right,
I mean.
Speaker 7 (24:53):
Yeah, I believe you can. So I've done it a
couple of different times. I did one on the Super
Bowl with Tom Brady, And you know, I just was
near a window when it looked like that Tom Brady
was going to be going to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
and I said, ah, those odds, why not, you know,
place a little bit of money on it.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
It worked.
Speaker 7 (25:13):
And the year before I usually will do three different
players for a Heisman future, and I was in Vegas
for a wedding and I went with Jake from to
a Tongue of Vailoa and Joe Burrow. And of course
when I told a buddy of mine, yeah, you know
Joe Burrow was in there. Oh you just wasted money.
Joke's on you now, Bud.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Yeah, wow, Yeah, I've never The only future I put
on last year is I did have I did have
two bets, one on Houston winning the Final Four in
college basketball and then in Connecticut. I was like connecting
cash a Connecticut one. But it was only like four
and a half to one, so we had a lot
of money. Oh well, someday we'll get on a chance
to have that here in Texas, I.
Speaker 6 (25:56):
Think, I hope. So it would be nice.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
I feel like if it's in it for thirty years, well, I.
Speaker 7 (26:00):
Mean it would be nice too. I mean even you know,
in person, Kios. I mean, like I said, I stopped
and got a breakfast sandwich this morning. If I'd had
more time at say, a said place there that had,
Oh hey, I can go over there, place a twenty
in there and you know, maybe have a couple of
bets out of that.
Speaker 6 (26:17):
Yeah. Is that necessarily hurting anybody? I don't think it is?
Speaker 3 (26:20):
All right, So a couple of opponents. Miami has won
three straight games.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Tua Tagovloa has remained upright, and as long as he has,
he's played really well. So that's maybe perhaps a more
concern you've got. The Baltimore Ravens went to LA last
night after a tough loss at Pittsburgh the week before,
and beat them in Los Angeles last night and Monday
night football. I had them going nine to eight to
(26:45):
open it this year, and I was made a fool
earlier this year after that fast start they got too.
I still think they're better than Miami. I think again
that you know that games in Houston, right, the Miami game.
Speaker 7 (26:59):
Yes, Miami and Baltimore are both hereat cities away.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
I feel still fulking about that. I think they're gonna
win Jacksonville. I mean, if if you lose to Jacksonville
this week with you don't know whether or not Trevor
Lawrence is going to play, then it will be full
implosion mode over there on Kirby. But it might not
be a four gone conclusion that they get to ten wins,
which is strange.
Speaker 10 (27:23):
Now.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
I know, well nine to eight win the AFC South,
it absolutely will, but it's not gonna give you very
much confidence.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
Well, it's not gonna give you very much confidence because
likely on the other sideline in that wild card game
would be either the Chargers or now unfortunately because of
last night, it would be the Baltimore Ravens. And recent
history has told you when the Baltimore Ravens are on
the other sidelines, it's not gone well for the Texans.
There's almost kind of a mental block with that organization.
(27:50):
I think, well, I don't think it's a metal block.
I think just Baltimore has been better. I mean, when
were the Texans better in any of those playoff games
against Baltimore. That's a fair point. I mean, you know
last year obviously you weren't. And I mean I brought
it up yesterday, Tomiko Ryans at the podium on that
Monday afterwards, saying, yeah, we gotta get better on the
lines because you saw how much of a difference that
(28:13):
was and how much of a wide gap that is
between us and them, because they're that.
Speaker 6 (28:18):
Much better than we are.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
And I mean, I think that you've probably improved on
the defensive side, you definitely have regressed on the offensive side.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
All right, So you got five games left at Jacksonville,
you have home for Miami at Kansas City, at home
for Baltimore at Tennessee. I mean, I would think at
bare minimum you could probably go three. I'd say bare minimum,
(28:46):
you're gonna at least win two. I think you'd be
favored to win three of the five, which puts you
at ten and seven.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
I mean, it does make you the least.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
That makes you the four seat, but short of them
running the table, they're gonna be the fore seat. Going
to the playoffs, you'll take on the worst wild card,
which I think is gonna probably be the Los Angeles Chargers.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
Right.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
I'd have to go back and look at the standings,
but I mean I think last night they were matched
up with you as the five. Maybe that loss knocked
them all the way.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Oh you know what you'd be, you'd be the best
wald card you'd be taking on, right, yeah, yea yeah,
because I've been in three, six, four, five, that's right.
Speaker 6 (29:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
Oh no, So.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Baltimore could potentially be coming to Houston two times in
the final three weeks.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Of the season.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Mmmm, that's fun, you don't I also noticed yesterday with
our callers dan Is, that there were I wouldn't say
there were a lot, but that would say there was
more than one that basically said.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
That am I sill On? I want to make sure
I'm still a one?
Speaker 5 (29:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (29:52):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got you loud and clear.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Okay, good?
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Uh, that this is year two of the process, that
it's a young coach, it's a young quarterback, it's a
young offensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
Demiko, I should say.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
Nick Caceio talked about how many close one score games
went the Texans way last year and that maybe, you know,
maybe more difficult.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
It was almost like we had a few folks in
a little bit of a backtrack.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Now, again, I would not say that's the majority of
the people that called yesterday are the majority of the
Texans fans out there, but it felt like there was.
Speaker 3 (30:27):
A greater number of than that. And I wonder if
it's a byproduct of this team is coming down to.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Earth it overperformed earlier in the year, or people are
just kind of preparing themselves for the disappointment of not
advancing as far as they would have liked to have
seen the Texans go this year.
Speaker 7 (30:44):
No, that's the anxiety I talked about, because, I mean,
you finally felt like this season with CJ. Stroud performing
the way he did last year, Willie Anderson junior, of course,
the defensive rookie of the year, he's coming back.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
He had to Neil Hunter.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
You made all those moves in the offseason like it
felt loaded for Bear, like it felt like this was
going to be the year of all years. I Mean,
the only time I think I've ever watched a Texans
team where I kind of looked at them and said
maybe was twenty eleven before match Job got hurt. Like
the way that that team was playing before he got
his foot rolled up on and got the list Frank injury,
(31:20):
they were very much in position to not only get
a first round by but to also be able to
win the entire thing. And when that happened, and of course,
Matt Lioner got hurt. You had to go to TJ. Yates,
who did an admirable job. He did a really great job.
I think at that point though, you're like third team quarterback.
(31:40):
I just don't see this becoming a Jeff Hostetler thing
like that. I just this is, you know, the team's good,
the defense is fantastic. I just think that, you know,
there's still those Baltimore guys, there's still New England out there.
Like all of those things kind of baked in. You
were like, yeah, this this, this isn't going to go
fully well. But outside of that, I mean, this was
(32:03):
probably the only other team that I could look at
in the preseason be like, yeah, we might be seeing
something special here.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
I just don't know how you can build it.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
As we went and got a great corner with the
early second round, the Texans went and got a better
running back.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
They added a better receiver.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Now granted that receiver's hurt, so that's you can't use
it storyline.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
You went and spent good money on a couple of
free agents in on the defense.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Uh, how how do you sell that when we're still young?
When I think people leaving training camp and maybe it's
because of the fake media that was out there that was,
you know, bragging on this team being the best training
camp thing they ever seen in their entire life.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
So maybe that's the media's for this, but I don't
know it's I.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
Think training camp tweets oh Man so and so Nico
Collins just owned Derek.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
Steve never oh Man good?
Speaker 6 (32:58):
What have passed?
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Stop a those stupid ass training camp.
Speaker 7 (33:01):
To we're doing You're doing one on one with players
and shorts and in helmets.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
But my point is that I feel like there are
people preparing for a softer landing.
Speaker 7 (33:11):
I think more rational people are, but two at the
same time. I mean, you know, it's much more disappointing
than this time last year. I mean, I don't remember
what the Texans were through twelve games last year, but
I mean it was all bonus at that point, and
we would have been disappointed if they had gone up
to Indianapolis and lost. But I think like once the
emotions kind of got out of it, you would have
(33:31):
been like, hey, dude, like this team probably at best
should have been a seven win team this year, and
they flipped it. They went ten and seven. They made
the playoffs, they won a playoff game, Like, let's not
get too crazy in terms of how how upset we
are that they didn't go further.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
All right?

Dan back in Houston eating his breakfast sandwich.
Speaker 6 (35:47):
No, it's been digested. We're good, all right, We'll make sure.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (35:51):
I kind of went to Bobby Hurley earlier, didn't I
Danny Hurley.
Speaker 6 (35:55):
Sorry, Danny Hurley.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Well, you're gonna have to explain that and do it
very succinctly, because we have nobody cares about college basketball.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
That's true.
Speaker 7 (36:01):
So, yeah, Danny Hurley lost his mind yesterday at the
Mallley Invitational and explained himself afterwards of why he lost
his mind. So that was me explaining myself afterwards.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
Do we have an audio of this? And is this
really actionly? Not bad audio?
Speaker 7 (36:15):
I'm sure we can work on it, So we'll we'll
let that marinate for a second, and when it's ready
to come out of the oven, we'll go ahead and
serve it for everyone.
Speaker 5 (36:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
He he just was bitching and moaning. Is Yukon Husky's
lost a huge lead late in the game against Memphis
and he was not particularly happy with some of the cus.
Speaker 7 (36:31):
I'm not really a huge fan of him calling the
other guy giving a half assed effort like it's that's
not your player, Like, don't do that.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Well, he's you know, he was being courted pretty hard
by the LA Lakers, and I knew he wasn't going
to take that job because his stick would have lasted
about five seconds in an NBA locker room. Oh, Lebron's
already tired of JJ Reddick. We don't know that you're
making that dude.
Speaker 6 (36:55):
Eventually.
Speaker 7 (36:57):
Lebron is very much the Jerry Jones of the NBA,
where it's never anybody else's fault, but then the constant
is it's always him.
Speaker 6 (37:06):
It's always Jerry Jones.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Yeah, I get it all right real quick, and we'll
get to more on Jerry Jones the next hour because
interesting little tidbit today on his weekly radio show in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
That'll be a little tease for the top of the
next hour.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
All right, So Bob night, Gil And look, Bob has
had a mixed record when it comes to accuracy on things,
but I think he's had a better two years lately
than maybe his previous two before that. Says in a
recent story that he writes for USA Today that the
Astros would love to have Alex pregnant back on a
(37:40):
six year deal worth one hundred and fifty six million dollars.
By the way, how good is that? I mean, imagine
someone saying we want you, and we want to pay
you one hundred and fifty six million dollars for the
next six years of your professional life, no matter what
you do. That's just crazy money, right apparently. I mean,
(38:02):
Ragman wants two hundred million. Now, whether that's adding a
seventh year to it, what if that's six two hundred,
whether that's seven two hundred, whether that's a two hundred,
who knows that. The little clip that I saw does
not detail how many.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
Years that's four hmmm.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
I don't think dan that the Astros want to go
beyond six. And that's where that's where I think the
number has been. It's been consistent that would be one
of the biggest lengthy contracts the Astros have ever given
out to any player. They've never given out a seven.
They sure as hell I ain't given an eight out.
I think six is by it the.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Max word is.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
And I think they've figured out a per dollar value
based on inflation and based of cost of the doing
business in baseball. Six six to me, And this is
so crazy to say because it's stupid, but it sounds
low for what I think Bregman wants. That would be
what what does the mass say on that? Well, twenty
(39:08):
five million year would be one fifty so.
Speaker 6 (39:10):
That oh, I just did it. It's twenty six.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Okay, twenty six a million dollars a year and it's
a lot of money.
Speaker 6 (39:15):
With a lot of money, yeah, could buy could buy
a lot of athletic apparel with that.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
It would keep him in one uniform, I would think for.
Speaker 6 (39:27):
His entire career.
Speaker 7 (39:29):
I mean, I think he'd be kind of to where
Jose Altuve the deal that he just signed, that maybe
he if he's shown that he's staying relatively healthy and
still playing the amount of games that he plays a season,
that maybe he could get a two to three year
deal and see if you can touch forty and he's
still somewhat of a productive player, he could be in
(39:49):
that range. But yeah, I mean I didn't necessarily read
Nightingale's story to mean that that was like the hard
concrete like I saw John Hammon's piece about that there
wasn't offer, But I read it more of like that's
what the Astros would kind of be in the neighborhood of.
Speaker 6 (40:08):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 7 (40:09):
And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, So I mean like that
which makes a lot of sense. I mean because too,
knowing Dana a little bit from his previous stop in Atlanta,
that was their modus operandi. Like that's how they they
they went about their business. Is most of their deals
for their guys, Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Ozzy Albi's, whoever
(40:30):
it is, was that twenty to twenty five million dollar range,
and Alexandthopolis would explain it as I'd much rather have
seven or eight guys making really good money as opposed
to one guy who we have to bet the farm on,
and then I've got to try to get creative from there.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
Well, if you're Bregman, you you thank the Astros for
that offer. If it's what, if it's sincere, and then
you go all right, Scott Boris here, you go go
beat this, and I've given you instruction to go get what.
Speaker 3 (41:04):
I think is fair market value.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
And maybe Scott's telling this to Bregmant saying, may I've
seen what's out there. I saw what Matt Chapman got
with the giants. You're worthy, You're at least that if
not more so, maybe we have a not necessarily a baseline,
but a entry point as to where the market would say.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
With the team that's had him since day one.
Speaker 7 (41:26):
Well, I mean it's also though too. I mean you've
got to think about it from the Astros perspective as well.
And again, you know, going back to Dana Brown's previous spot,
they were in this with Freddie Freeman and it was
to a point where they finally said, we've got to
be proactive. I think, if nothing else at this moment,
Dana Brown, I have no doubt that an offer has
been made. I don't know what the offer is. But
(41:48):
it's also too, hey, reach out to Domas's people, reach
out to whoever else if we've got to make a trade,
whatever it might be. Like, they're working through contingency plans
for that as well. I mean you even heard him
say a much last week on Astro Line that they're
planning for both Bregman being here and Bregman not being here.
Moral of the story is Dana Brown has gone through
(42:08):
this with experience.
Speaker 6 (42:10):
He's not going to be caught flat footed.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Like the reality is this, if we believe Nightingale to
be that's the range that seems a good range. Again,
I can't go to our audience and say do you
give it more because that's not our job.
Speaker 3 (42:27):
That's we don't handle the budget. Well it's not done.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
No, what value is right we kind of know based
off of the guys or that are his position, his age,
his success, his track record, his resume and UH and
future potential.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
So it seems it feels low, but I don't know
if it is low.
Speaker 7 (42:49):
I mean, like you said, you know you got the
Matt Chapman deal, which I can't remember because I think
it was about this range.
Speaker 6 (42:54):
I think it was like six one fifty or something
like that.
Speaker 7 (42:56):
And I don't think Bregman would look if indeed that
was the six for one fifty six, as what an insult,
Like I can't even believe they think that low of me.
I think that probably the response would be, all right,
this is a good starting point. I mean, what about
one seventy five and maybe the astros counter and say, okay,
one sixty five, Like I think, if nothing else, it's
(43:18):
a good working start that you can meet somewhere in
the middle and be able to get this job done.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
Six years one fifty one is the new Matt Chapman deal.
So that'd be a little bit more than what again,
if you're believing with Bob Knightingales would say, is what
is out there? All right, let's get the second hour
of the show started. We were talking about the Dan
Hurley comment about the officiating. We happen to find it
for you. Plus Jerry Jones comes to his defense of
(43:46):
Hiss head Coach. That's coming up as well, Gut Feelings
in one half hour seven one three two one two
five seven on second hour Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
Ross finds himself in Puerto Rico, and we'll have more
of that coming up a moment on seven.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Ninety lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
Here we go at the hour.
Speaker 2 (44:08):
Number two of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. I'm
here in Minneapolis. Ross finds himself in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Nice to have you with us here on the radio
program today seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
If you want to jump in, we have Gut Feelings
coming up in one half hour from now. The news
noon Connor's got an NFL rewind at twelve thirty and
Willie Fritz has made a change at offensive coordinator and
(44:30):
we will talk to Willie about that coming up today
at one thirty plus, believe it or not.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
Seven one three two one two five seven.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
I am here in Minneapolis tonight for the Rockets and
the Minnesota Timberwolves. If the Rockets win this game, they
will go to the knockout round of the Inn season tournament.
That means they will have won their group. They'll be
one of the four teams representing the Western Conference. They'll
have four teams in the Eastern Conference. Those two four
teams will meet each other, and then the semifinal winners
(44:58):
will go on to the tournament in Law Vegas with
they have a chance to play for five hundred thousand dollars.
Speaker 7 (45:05):
I'm looking at Vanessa Richardson's suite right here of the
NBA Cup court that they have down there at the
Target Center.
Speaker 6 (45:12):
Is that what they play?
Speaker 7 (45:13):
Yeah, it's pretty interesting. I think your eyes are in
for it tonight calling the action.
Speaker 2 (45:18):
See the Wolves are wearing blue uniforms tonight. So I'm
about to go look at this photo you're speaking of
right now. Let's take a look.
Speaker 6 (45:24):
It is a very bright lime green court.
Speaker 3 (45:27):
Oh, it's my god. Oh my god, it's a hot mess.
Speaker 6 (45:30):
You're possibly in for attention headache.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
Oh my god, it is literally lime green. No, yeah,
you're not lying.
Speaker 6 (45:41):
I wouldn't lead you astray. Why would you think.
Speaker 3 (45:43):
That, Well, because I lie to you all the time.
Speaker 7 (45:45):
Oh well, I mean I'm gullible. So you know that's
on me, that's not on you.
Speaker 3 (45:49):
Okay, fair enough?
Speaker 6 (45:51):
Oh lord?
Speaker 10 (45:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (45:54):
Can you imagine what the Rockets red court if they decided, hey,
we're gonna do something really funny here, we're going all
red tonight.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
Well, you know again, they always tell us the uniforms
they're wearing the night before, and they're wearing blue, And
I was like, well, if they have a blue court,
it's not gonna it's not gonna mesh. Well, lime green court,
blue uniforms. Yeah, I'm gonna wind up having some serious
eye issues.
Speaker 7 (46:13):
You'd almost be like Mike Tarico on Battle Red Sunday
Night Football, where he was like, I gotta be honest,
I'm having a tough time seeing these numbers.
Speaker 3 (46:21):
Yeah, it's tough.
Speaker 2 (46:22):
All right, Let's just real quick before we get to
some other news headlines. Today, we were talking about Dan Hurley.
He's the coach at Yukon back to back national champions
They're in the Maui Invitational.
Speaker 3 (46:33):
By the way, I love Maui.
Speaker 6 (46:34):
Oh it's great.
Speaker 3 (46:35):
I wish the Rockets could play in a Maui Invitational.
Speaker 6 (46:38):
Oh, it'd be awesome.
Speaker 7 (46:39):
I mean, you know, in terms of the Hawaiian Islands,
my favorite is Kawaii, but Maui is pretty nice. It's
getting a little too large and commercialized though. I mean
that's kind of you know, the other part of it.
It's like a smaller Honolulu. But yeah, shout out to Fleetwoods,
which actually I don't think Fleetwood's is around anymore.
Speaker 6 (46:59):
I don't think it made.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
It, no, But I'm just glad they're having the Maui
Invitational after or all those the terrible fires they had
a couple of years ago. So they lost the game.
Did Yukon late? I don't really. It was like double
digit leave with like three or four minutes left to go, right,
something crazy like that.
Speaker 7 (47:15):
Yeah, I mean, I you know, like you said, I mean,
not paying a ton of attention to college basketball right now.
I watched a little bit of UNC Dayton last night,
but that's the most college basketball I've watched all year.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
I got you.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
So there was a tough call last night, and that
only matter what it was. It's more about the reaction.
Here's Dan Hurley, the coach at Yukon, not particularly pleased
with the gentleman with the whistles.
Speaker 11 (47:35):
But I had a lot of issues with what went
on out there in the game that over the back
call at that point of the game. There was no
attempt to block out. There was a player on Memphis
that that made a half assed effort to rebound that basketball,
and Liam McNeely high pointed that rebound. For that call
(47:57):
to be made at that point of the game was
complete joke, all right. And then for me, I don't
know what happened. I might have lost my balance by
the absurdity of the call, or maybe I tripped. But
if I made that call at that point, I would
have ignored the fact that I was on my back.
(48:19):
If I made that call, I would have ignored that.
I would have ignored that that was a that was
a major, obviously a major.
Speaker 5 (48:27):
How you could call.
Speaker 11 (48:28):
That while that game was going on the way that
game was going on is just beyond me.
Speaker 5 (48:32):
But I know.
Speaker 11 (48:35):
I've never seen the one ref before I've never I
didn't even know he was a college ref. And then
you know, I'm familiar with the other two, so I'm
not surprised.
Speaker 10 (48:44):
Hm.
Speaker 3 (48:48):
First of all, Memphis player who half asked to play.
That's hysterical.
Speaker 7 (48:55):
It's definitely gonna be T shirts in the Memphis facility.
I'd have to believe, Like I think they've already started
printing up half assed effort.
Speaker 2 (49:04):
Well, I can tell you this, he I don't know
who finds him. I guess it would be it would
have to be the Big East that would do it.
But my goodness, See that's why I was just wondering.
Speaker 7 (49:14):
I mean, because it wasn't a Big East game, So
did they even have you know, the purview to be
even able to do that?
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Well, my guess is if these officials were assigned by
I mean the I guess it doesn't really you know,
these could be other conference officials.
Speaker 3 (49:31):
I don't I don't even know, but usually you have to.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
If you're going to follow complaint against a coach, you
go to the conference office to do that.
Speaker 7 (49:39):
And then I think, if I'm the Big East, I
don't mess with my top dog here because if you
upset him enough, then he just says, Okay, hey, let's
go to the Big twelve.
Speaker 6 (49:48):
Let's go somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
Well, it's not going to the Big twelve. That's not happening.
Speaker 6 (49:52):
Well, I mean I.
Speaker 3 (49:53):
Don't we don't want them, we don't need them.
Speaker 6 (49:55):
Don't need him.
Speaker 7 (49:56):
I mean, yeah, it's already too spread out as it is.
Well it's not only that. I mean it's also competitive
enough as is. But you get my point though, I mean,
there are some programs who are too big to fail.
And in this case right here, I don't think the
Big East is barking up that tree.
Speaker 3 (50:10):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
Maybe you know what, he'll probably wind up getting into management.
Like you know, you can't do that again, Like I'll
slap on the risk kind of thing, right, A strongly
worded letter if we will ooh the old.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
Strongly worded letter.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
You hate those seven one three two one two five,
seven nine. If you want to jump in seven one
three two one two five seven.
Speaker 3 (50:28):
NINETI let's go to Hondo AND's.
Speaker 2 (50:29):
I had a Dean on The Matt Thomas Show with
Ross Dean, good morning, thanks for holding.
Speaker 12 (50:34):
Hey Matt, I have I have called you a few times.
I we lived in Montgomery, lived in Brenham. Now we're
in Hondo. I'm still big time Rockets fan. Uh yeah,
my wife's uh superintendent. I don't know if you remember that.
It's been a while, but uh, I try to listen
to y'all when I can. First of all, not even
(50:56):
a U of H fan. I want you of H
to crush connecticutte because Hurley thinks he's the king of basketball,
and he is right now. But I want you of
H to crush them in the tournament.
Speaker 3 (51:08):
That's not what I'm talking about.
Speaker 12 (51:11):
He's a little too a little too big for his
bridges right now, feeling like that's my opinion. Now he's
won it twice, I get it.
Speaker 3 (51:19):
But I want you of eight.
Speaker 5 (51:22):
Rockets.
Speaker 12 (51:24):
We moved over here. All I get is first uff
and it makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
But if I had to buy the NBA ticket and
i've we've been My wife loves him, I love him.
They have looked awesome. I don't know everything that's going
on last game, notwithstanding.
Speaker 3 (51:45):
I want to know what.
Speaker 12 (51:48):
Please they're seed. I know it's early for playoff chances.
I don't The tough deal is cool, I get it.
They're doing good, that would be something, but I'm talking
about the playoffs. And then I don't know what's up
with Cam Whitmore. I know he's he can be a
little volatile, but I wanted I look, tari Ethan and
(52:10):
Aman are fantastic. That's a great combo. I just if
you can comment on that.
Speaker 7 (52:16):
That's really Yeah, it seems like we've lost Matt here
for a second. We'll get him back. But I mean
with Cam Whitmore, to answer your question there, I mean,
I think it's just more or less he's out of
the rotation. He's a young enough player you want to
be able to try to continue that development and be
able to make sure he gets his minutes. It's not
going to happen up here. It's more beneficial for him
(52:36):
to go down to Rio Grand and be able to
get those minutes. And as the season goes along, Let's
be honest, we have injuries, we have maybe even you know,
the Rockets finally around the trade deadline make a trade
and he might slot back in. But I mean, we
see what ima Udoka wants to do with his rotation,
and unfortunately for Kim Whitmore, he was in the category
(52:58):
of Jayshawn Tate and for some of the guys that
don't get a ton of minutes. I mean, when Steven
Adams is active, Jock Landell doesn't play. So I mean,
that's just really kind of a numbers game when it
comes to that, And I don't begrudge the Rockets for
deciding to move him down for the time being to
try to make sure that he can get those valuable minutes.
(53:19):
So all right, so we'll work on trying to get
Matt back. But it is the Matt Thoms Show with Ross.
Dan Matthews in for Ross. Calm down a little bit
since you know, being slightly tardy for the show for
reasons outside of my control. That's okay, all good holiday season,
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, But anyway, it's Dan Matthews. Connor d
McGovern's Behind the Glass will continue with more of The
(53:41):
Matt tom Show with Ross next right here on your
Home with the Astros and the Rockets, Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (53:45):
Ninety lunchtimers, lunch timers, this is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 3 (53:53):
Well, I've at seventeen. I'm seven. I sorry about that.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
A little disconnect there which some of the hotel technology
is not spectacular, So but I went to a plan B.
I'm going to assume Dan our previous caller. And by
the way, thanks to our friends, we're you know, we're
Hondo's number one sports.
Speaker 3 (54:09):
Station besides sports coverage.
Speaker 6 (54:10):
So that's it.
Speaker 7 (54:11):
I mean, Rockets in Astros coverage runs deep in the
Hondo area.
Speaker 2 (54:16):
Yeah, I think so. Thanks to the caller for joining us.
I think he was asking about Cam Wentmore. The reality is,
you play ten players an NBA team most nights, sometimes nine,
and Cam just wasn't making the top ten.
Speaker 3 (54:27):
And instead of just sitting here not playing, they.
Speaker 2 (54:29):
Want to go down to the G League and get
some shots in and we're kind of shoting.
Speaker 3 (54:32):
He wasn't shooting very well at all at any.
Speaker 2 (54:34):
Point here is a rocket this year, he's had a
you know, the limited time he played, he couldn't shoot.
Speaker 3 (54:40):
Pretty simple.
Speaker 7 (54:41):
Yeah, I mean, and that's what I said too. I
mean he was kind of in the j Shawn Tate category.
Jayshawn Tate. I think they kind of look at him,
no disrespect to him, as you know, they don't necessarily
have tremendous future plans for him. But for Cam Whitmore,
I think it's a different deal. And I mean there's
no sense in having him sit up here. I mean,
we see it all at time in Major League Baseball. Hey,
(55:01):
why is this guy being sent back down? Well, because
they're sitting on the bench. They're not getting consistent at bats,
so they're not getting consistent innings on the mound, right,
So send them down a sugar Land, let them, let
them get that opportunity there, and when we need them,
we'll call them back up. And I mean just because
he's down there right now, I mean didn't we see
this last year with Tarry Easan too as well, and
Amen Thompson as well.
Speaker 6 (55:21):
Yeah right, I mean, so there's going to come a time.
Speaker 7 (55:23):
Where, yeah, he's gonna get his opportunity, and when that
time is here, be ready to go.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
The reality is unlike it was twenty five thirty years ago,
with all these eighteen and nineteen year olds playing one
year of college basketball or playing in the G League
for one year. They're coming up and they're just not
physically and emotionally ready for the Riggers of a full schedule.
I mean, reed, Shepherd is getting a little bit more
playing time, but even read it, it would have to
(55:50):
say this is a growing process, and he's a number
one three pick in the NBA draft.
Speaker 7 (55:55):
You know, it's funny you say that because I was
talking with a buddy of mine about this very thing
and just the NBA game as a whole. I mean,
there's a reason why you watched the draft last year
and most of the players picked were from Europe. Because
teams look at players right now coming out of America
and say, you are not ready for those guys that
come out of Europe. They've been playing professional basketball already,
(56:17):
like they've already gone through at least somewhat of what
they can expect. Whereas I mean, you know, you have
a kid like, for example, everybody was all over Jalen
green oh Man bust of a pick second overall, what
did we get here? Because he grew up being a
better athlete in larger than everybody on the floor and
was able to get around the block, get to the
rim with relative ease. He tries to come off a
(56:38):
pick and roll in this game, then he's going to
have somebody standing there where he's like, wait a minute,
somebody's standing here.
Speaker 6 (56:45):
Well, of course they are.
Speaker 7 (56:45):
They've been doing this for you know, ten fifteen years
at an incredibly high level. Yeah, they're just as athletic
as you are.
Speaker 3 (56:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (56:53):
The reality is you're just if these guys had played
two or three years in college basketball and had some
time away, they could PROBA come up and be more
a little more impactful than they are. That's why if
you get a good rookie early on in his first season,
like if you're a Rookie of the Year in the NBA,
that must really mean something because you actually got some
rotation time. So you know, I Cam, I think it's
got a future. It's just if the shots aren't falling.
(57:15):
And look, this is a basketball team right now that
needs shooting in the worst way. I mean, it's it's
a it's a thirty three percent three point shooting team.
It's about a forty four percent field.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
Goal shooting team.
Speaker 2 (57:28):
If the if Cam was to strike and get hot,
they'd be time for him.
Speaker 7 (57:33):
But by the way, too, did you see the somebody
threw this out on Twitter of the reed Shepherd dribble
to the corner step back three, and the caption was
who does that look like to you? I was like,
oh no, don't don't do that to him. He was
saying that he looked like Steph Curry. No, No, it's like, oh,
don't don't do that to him.
Speaker 3 (57:51):
That's not fair at all. Don't do that. No.
Speaker 2 (57:53):
But yeah, look he's going to control Imadoka has nothing
out person link for cam Wentmore. He wants to put
the best ten players out there. Frankly, if Jalen Green
is continuing to struggle from the perimeter like he has
in the last two weeks or so, there'd be a
spot for somebody gets some playing time. I promise you
that I absolutely do seven one three two, one two
(58:15):
five seven ninety seven one three two, one two five
seven nine zero.
Speaker 3 (58:20):
I have been wrong about a lot of things.
Speaker 6 (58:23):
We all are.
Speaker 2 (58:23):
We we'd love to be able to say our sports
predictions and our analysis are spot on every single time.
It's not not possible. I am stunned at the amount
of leash that has been given to Mike McCarthy in Dallas.
Case in point, this is Jerry Jones on his twice
weekly radio show in Dallas, talking about the future this
(58:48):
morning of Mike McCarthy in Dallas this season.
Speaker 3 (58:51):
We could be talking about an extension for Mike McCarthy.
Speaker 10 (58:54):
Well, I'm don't think that's crazy at all that's not crazy.
And listen, Mike McCarthy is one an outstanding coach. Has
listening to the game last night watching it and Hakman
was talking about it, and he's reiterated that several times publicly,
this Super Bowl winning coach and Mike mc Mike McCarthy
(59:19):
has been there, done that, He's got great ideas. So
bottom line is that in no place in my body
language or anything else, have you seen indications about what
we're going to be doing relative to this staff at
(59:39):
the end of this year, And we shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (59:44):
I don't think Mike McCarthy's a terrible coach. I just
think it's a terrible fit. And unfortunately, Jerry is not
going to fire the general manager and has not fired
a general manager through all of these different coaches he
has brought in over the years. So when in doubt,
if you're looking to make to shift things and make
have a culture change, the only person that Jerry Jones
(01:00:07):
is gonna fire, it's not gonna be himself.
Speaker 3 (01:00:08):
It's gonna be the head football coach. It there feels
like to me.
Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
And look, Dallas won last week and very lucky that
they did because of the extra point.
Speaker 3 (01:00:18):
That was missed. But the vibe to me for the
Cowboys is really really.
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
Flat and unmotivating, and not that I don't think and look,
Mike McCarthy's got to bear some of that responsibility.
Speaker 3 (01:00:34):
I think Jerry Franklin has to do more of it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:36):
But I am stunned that the term extension in Mike
McCarthy are being brought up in the same sentence right now.
Speaker 7 (01:00:43):
Well, I mean, it's also a couple of different reasons
that I have to believe Jerry on This is number one.
Jerry doesn't have much more time. I mean, let's just
be honest here. I'm not trying to put life for
as a gentleman. In life, I mean he yeah, I
mean it's just father time eventually gets you. And I
mean look at how much he yo yoed Jason Garrett.
(01:01:03):
I mean how many times at the end of a season,
Matt did we say to ourselves, up, it's Monday, it's
black Monday, Jason Garrett's gonna get it.
Speaker 6 (01:01:12):
And then we get nothing.
Speaker 7 (01:01:13):
And then it's like for days where even people on
the Cowboys beat would be like, all right, Jerry, like,
what's the deal here?
Speaker 6 (01:01:18):
Are you firing him?
Speaker 7 (01:01:19):
Are you keeping them like, what's going on here, and
then eventually they'd have the press conference. Oh, we're all in,
We're gonna, you know, go for it, and you know,
all of the things that the fan base I'm sure
just loves. And I mean, I think the other part
of it as well is, I mean it's kind of
hard to argue against what Mike McCarthy has done outside
of the playoffs for the previous seasons. I think they've
(01:01:40):
won twelve games in every single season. So maybe this
is Steven getting in Jerry's ear and being like, hey, look,
let's be honest with ourselves. We didn't do a good
enough job of building him up a roster that's good
enough to be able to get past the point that
we want him to get past. So we've got to
wear that on our end. And it's also too as well,
kind of a to the first point I brought up
(01:02:01):
of not having much time left. I mean, you bring
on a new coach, that's a new coaching staff, it's
a new feeling out period, there's an adjustment, there's all
these different types of things that I'm just not sure
that Jerry wants to do.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Then why wouldn't you leave your lasting legacy. I'm going
into a coach that would maybe inspire that football team,
because it looks like to me that Mike McCarthy, according
to especially what Micah Parsons said two weeks ago, he's
not inspired by.
Speaker 6 (01:02:29):
Him because the coach isn't the problem.
Speaker 7 (01:02:31):
Matt Like, that's the whole thing as well is Jerry
will never admit that.
Speaker 6 (01:02:34):
But it's an endless cycle.
Speaker 7 (01:02:36):
I mean, I've told you the cycle of Cowboys fandom
in the way that it is. I mean, there's tons
of ups and downs. In terms of the ups are
enough to keep people hoping, yeah, hey, finally we'll beat
the forty nine ers, We'll beat the Packers.
Speaker 5 (01:02:49):
You won't.
Speaker 7 (01:02:49):
But the constant is Jerry Like, it doesn't matter how
much you change this. If you draft crappily and you
don't really do well in terms of your free agent
signings and you try to win the off season of
bringing in I don't know and aging von Miller or
somebody like that, you're not doing anything other than just
repeating the same things that you keep doing. And when
(01:03:11):
you keep repeating the same things that you're doing, it's
incredibly dumb to think that you're gonna get different results.
Speaker 2 (01:03:17):
It's amazing to me that his kid, Steven, who's not kid,
he's an old adult himself, hasn't ran father himself from
from dad's car.
Speaker 3 (01:03:25):
Seriousness, so you can't drive anymore.
Speaker 7 (01:03:27):
Well so, I mean like basically a hostile takeover, like
what Kendall Roy tried to do in Secession.
Speaker 2 (01:03:34):
Ding seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five.
Speaker 6 (01:03:41):
Seven ninety TV show and fairness.
Speaker 2 (01:03:43):
It doesn't matter any by the way, anytime Connory, any
multimedia reference, television film, you must ding damn Matthews on that.
Speaker 6 (01:03:52):
Dang, there you go, there you go.
Speaker 7 (01:03:53):
So keep keep that in mind when I bring up
my pardon the pardon my take references later, I guess.
Speaker 3 (01:03:58):
There you go. Even better, even better.
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
Shout down, Matthews. I'm Matt Thomas. We are with you

Speaker 3 (01:04:22):
That's very simple. Just make a prediction on what you
think is going to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:04:25):
Anything in sports, Cowboys Texans versus Jaguars, Rockets, Tonight, Houston Cougars.
Speaker 3 (01:04:31):
I don't matter life in general. Give us a gut feeling.

Speaker 1 (01:05:41):
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 2 (01:05:46):
All right, here we go seven one three two point
two five seven ninety. If you want to jump in
seven one three two one two five seven ninety. If
you have a gut feeling on something of a sports prediction,
if you call it, you get it right, you call
us back, and you brag about it. If you're wrong,
we just forget about it unless it's completely absurd.
Speaker 3 (01:06:05):
Connor, how do we do? Last week? All right, Matt?
Speaker 4 (01:06:08):
You had the Rockets going to the knockout round of
the n season tournament so yet to be seen. Yep,
Texans beat the Titans by three touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (01:06:16):
Did I really say that?
Speaker 6 (01:06:17):
You did say that?
Speaker 3 (01:06:18):
Ou?
Speaker 6 (01:06:19):
Ouch?
Speaker 4 (01:06:20):
Astros will not make any moves significant moves by winter meetings.
The Astros do not sign Verlander, and the Cougars beat Baylor.
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
Oh you hear that, folks, I've just poured my soul
to you. Look at all that stuff. Either that's an
incomplete or flat out wrong. It reminds me of my
college days. Dan Matthews, who you telling?
Speaker 6 (01:06:44):
Man?
Speaker 7 (01:06:44):
I still have bad dreams of I've missed a test.
I didn't even know I was signed up for a class.
My parents are gonna kill me. Then I wake up
and I say, oh, yeah, I graduated.
Speaker 5 (01:06:54):
I'm good.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
Same thing I have.
Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
I used to cheat a lot in high school, and
I have the same teacher. It's always on me to
turn these papers in and IM like, oh my god,
I'm I got graduate from high school.
Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
And then I realized. I go to my office when
I wake up in the morning, my diplomas in there.
Speaker 10 (01:07:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:07:08):
Mom and dad can't get upset about it anymore. I mean,
I walked the stage, I had the cap and gown on.
Speaker 6 (01:07:13):
We're good, all right?
Speaker 5 (01:07:15):
Damn? I don't know? Yeah, how do I do?
Speaker 4 (01:07:18):
Dan had the Rockets sweeping the home stand, winning the
next three games.
Speaker 6 (01:07:21):
Oops damn.
Speaker 4 (01:07:22):
Saturday game Texans will cover the eight and a half
against the Titans.
Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
Oops.
Speaker 6 (01:07:26):
Boy, and Verlander resided with the Astros determined.
Speaker 7 (01:07:31):
Yeah, yeah, that's an incomplete Yeah, these my stone cold locks.
It's uh, it's been a little bit of rough rough
sledding this year and the games that I should be
good at, the college games, I've been pedestrian at best.
Speaker 4 (01:07:45):
I had the Rockets winning their next three straight as well,
so that didn't happen. He said Alpi was going to
get a triple double by this time this week, which
I believed didn't happen.
Speaker 6 (01:07:53):
Did know, I want to say that he did on
the Wednesday game?
Speaker 4 (01:07:56):
No, uh no, he he had thirty one points and
twelve rebounds, but only two assistances.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
I thought he had only rap saying he had two
triple doubles this year. So I said triple double, not
double double.
Speaker 7 (01:08:08):
Oh okay, yeah, yeah, sorry contact, Uh, Texans be the
Titans by at least fifteen.
Speaker 6 (01:08:13):
That didn't happen, I said, I said, you could a
touchdown though he did show him out for that.
Speaker 8 (01:08:19):
You.
Speaker 7 (01:08:19):
Yes, As soon as he got in there to make
it seventeen fourteen, I was like, I believe that was
a Connor McGovern gut feeling so very good, uh Cmd,
And then.
Speaker 4 (01:08:28):
Yeah, Matt, I believe you said, Ohio Ohio State beats Indiana,
which did happen?
Speaker 3 (01:08:32):
So yeah, they destroyed him. By the way.
Speaker 2 (01:08:34):
We got to college football rankings coming out tonight, right,
mm hmm, Indiana's got a plummet correct.
Speaker 6 (01:08:39):
Yes, not if you believe Danny Canell.
Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
But what did Danny call say? Oh?
Speaker 7 (01:08:45):
He just it's basically anything that's against the popular opinion
and can be as ridiculous on its on its surface
as possible. Danny Canell will say on Twitter when it comes.
Speaker 2 (01:08:55):
To coh, you gotta explain what he said though, that's
what I'm saying that Indiana belongs. That's ridiculous. Watched the game,
they were a fish out of water. I mean, I
like good stories and everything, but my gosh, I mean,
let's let's be clear. That was when when Ohio State
decided to turn it up a little bit. They could
(01:09:15):
have won that game by more. They had a couple
of red zone non scores.
Speaker 7 (01:09:21):
I mean, including even like a turnover on downs Like these, Matt,
all these points you're bringing up are exactly the same
points that people, including Chipper Jones sorry to throw back,
Yeah he he got involved because Chipper is a big
Florida fan, and so of course, then he made it
about Knowles and gaiters with with Danny, it was it
(01:09:42):
was Twitter piling on. Like Twitter is very much the
hallways at high school of if you know, one of
the popular kids is trying to beat up one of
like the nerdier kids, that everybody will then circle around
and push the nerdy kid back in and you know,
have them get punched.
Speaker 6 (01:09:57):
Yeah, that's that's what Twitter.
Speaker 3 (01:09:58):
Is, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:10:00):
So this proves to you ladies and gentlemen that if
you have any gut feelings, don't feel bad about getting
them wrong. We're human on this show, and we only
brag when we win. If we get wrong, we just
quickly move on, like we're going.
Speaker 3 (01:10:14):
To do this week.
Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
Oh lord, all right, my son Peyton is in class
right now, my middle son. So I can tell you
that Texas is going to be at A and M
in College Station on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
I think it's going to be a close game.
Speaker 2 (01:10:33):
I think that it's going to be the lottest game
that maybe Kyle Field has ever had before in terms
of like you know that in the mess, you know
they measure the decibels and whatnot, right, it's the most
you know, it's the most expensive game ever in regular
season college football history.
Speaker 3 (01:10:46):
In the open market, I saw that.
Speaker 7 (01:10:48):
I think the cheapest ticket is touching about seven hundred
and fifty dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
Average ticket I think is sixteen hundred at this point.
Speaker 6 (01:10:56):
Not this economy, brother, But you know what, those people.
Speaker 3 (01:11:00):
That are looking to get that can afford it.
Speaker 7 (01:11:03):
Oh no, like And that's the thing too, that you know.
I brought this up earlier in the year, and especially
in the SEC, this is prevalent. Like I was telling
people Georgia was going to have a half full stadium
at DKR for that Texas game, and they're like, no way.
I said, no, These people have tons of money and
they spend it because they are rabbit for their team.
(01:11:25):
And it turned out to be darn closed. So yeah,
people of you know, major college football programs, especially in
the SEC, they'll fork out the money, even money they
don't have.
Speaker 3 (01:11:36):
Yeah. Right now, Texas is a six point favorite.
Speaker 2 (01:11:39):
If I was a betting man on this, I would
probably give the Longhorns. I'd probably give the agus of
six and still take the long Horns.
Speaker 6 (01:11:46):
That sounds fair.
Speaker 2 (01:11:47):
I'm thinking thirty one, twenty one somethinghere in that range.
Speaker 6 (01:11:53):
Well, then the Longhorns would cover correct.
Speaker 2 (01:11:55):
Yeah, So I'm saying I'm giving the agus of points
and I'm gonna still take Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:11:58):
Yeah, okay, yep, all right, so that's my first prediction.
Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
Rockets win tonight and grab I'm gonna add to it,
They're gonna win tonight and they're going to grab that
spot in the knockout run of the n Season Tournament. Okay,
And I'm willing this because that means I'm only ben
one win away from that game from a trip to Vegas.
Speaker 6 (01:12:21):
Speak getting new existence, Matt.
Speaker 2 (01:12:23):
That's what I'm trying to do. I don't like my
Cougar's chances in b A b YU. Just saying means
gonna be really cold, and our offense is not scored
in the last couple of weeks, and we got a
new coordinator for this week. I mean, I'd like to
say it's gonna be close, but I have not. I mean,
our defense has played pretty well, but man, b YU
(01:12:46):
is in a bad move. They've what lost two straight games.
Still got a chance with the Big twelve turn at
Big twelve Championship game. So I'm gonna I'm gonna say
in the Houston b YU game, that is.
Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
A m stay away. Okay, all right, what do you
guys got?
Speaker 7 (01:13:06):
I uh to believe that Texas wins the game on Saturday.
I actually do think that they cover. I just think
that that's a pretty high emotional letdown for A and
M last week, and I just don't think they're there yet.
And I don't think that's a huge sin against Mike
Elko in the program. And then we can even do
(01:13:26):
a further one that will be incomplete for next week.
But Texas beach Georgia in the rematch. Oh, you're already
calling your shot out. Who's going to be in it?
Okay against Georgia? Yeah, for the SEC Championship game. Yes, yes, yeah,
I'm going with that.
Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
Yep. I had actually said.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
I actually told Ross so many weeks ago, I thought
that when Texas played Georgia earlier this year, that was
not gonna be the last time they're gonna play each other.
Speaker 6 (01:13:49):
Okay, so.
Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
A couple of quick ones from me, go ahead, what y'allseul.
Speaker 6 (01:13:55):
You got, I've got?
Speaker 7 (01:13:57):
You know, Dana Brown has said maybe a platoon option
over at first base or right handed bat.
Speaker 6 (01:14:01):
One year deal. Paul goldschmant, really, yeah, going.
Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
With the Houston Ties.
Speaker 7 (01:14:08):
Huh huh, yeah, one year, maybe with an option for
a second. But yeah, I mean, you don't have to
have him be an everyday guy. He could split with
John Singleton. But if he starts to get going and
becomes the Paul Goldschmidt that we hope he still could be,
then maybe he becomes your everyday guy. But that and uh, unfortunately, Matt,
I think the Rockets lose tonight. Oh sorry, I'm sorry.
(01:14:31):
I gotta go with my gut.
Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
By the way, Paul gold Schmitt last year with the
Cardinals two forty five with twenty two home runs, sixty
five RBIs, one hundred and forty seven hits.
Speaker 7 (01:14:42):
Yeah, get Christian Walker out of your brain, Like that's
not happening. Whether whatever happens with Alex Bregmant, it's not.
Dana Brown is pretty much said as much. And I
think that that's an edict from up high. We're already
paying a first basement we're not even using in our organization,
so get creative over at first.
Speaker 4 (01:14:58):
All right, Connor what he got, I'll have the Rockets
being the Timberwolves tonight to advance to the knockout round.
Speaker 3 (01:15:04):
I like it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:05):
I say Texans defeat the Jaguars and Joe Mixon has
two touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (01:15:09):
Oh my, a double dose of Joe Mixon.
Speaker 4 (01:15:12):
Okay, and then yeah, I'll say UC beats sux A
and M and MISSOO beats Arkansas.
Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
Well, of course you're gonna say Missouri beats Arkansas. Yeah,
I have to. I mean, isn't isn't Arkansas like like
two wins or something like that. I'm just kidding.
Speaker 6 (01:15:24):
They're not that bad, but now they're boll eligible.
Speaker 3 (01:15:28):
What do they call that? Is that a robbery game
between Missouri and Arkansas?
Speaker 6 (01:15:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
It is a rivalry game. Is that like a teeth
optional game or what?
Speaker 6 (01:15:39):
It's the battle for the Ozarks.
Speaker 4 (01:15:41):
They used to play on Friday after Thanksgiving. Yeah, that's
how you know nobody was watching.
Speaker 5 (01:15:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:15:47):
By the way, I want A and M in Texas
playing at seven o'clock on Thursday nights like it was
when I was a kid.
Speaker 7 (01:15:55):
They kind of gone away in college football from the
Thursday night game because much like.
Speaker 3 (01:15:59):
The NBA, danfol took over.
Speaker 6 (01:16:01):
That's it.
Speaker 7 (01:16:02):
I mean, the NFL looked at the NBA for Christmas
Day and said, oh, that's your day.
Speaker 6 (01:16:07):
That's cute. Watch what we do.
Speaker 2 (01:16:10):
Yeah, NFL is taking over everything. Got black Friday game,
They've got Christmas Day games? Poor NBA. NBA is like,
this is our chance to show. We've put five games on.
Speaker 7 (01:16:18):
All right, outside of Lebron playing against the Celtics, who cares.
Speaker 3 (01:16:22):
That's right, two NFL games will go for that instead.
Speaker 7 (01:16:25):
All right, look another Knicks and seventy six Ers game. Awesome,
I'm not watching.
Speaker 2 (01:16:30):
Yeah, you know, always gonna say that new game. Nobody watches anyway,
You don't. You only start picking up those NBA games.
Speaker 7 (01:16:34):
Oh you're trying to make the nets happen. That's cute. Yeah,
I'm still not watching.
Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
Hold on, let me see what Let me see what
the Christmas games are. Are they gonna be any good
this year?
Speaker 6 (01:16:43):
Let's take share their pedestrian at best?
Speaker 2 (01:16:45):
Yeah, all right, seven one three seven. If you have
a gut feeling that you want to get in the
next segment, it's yours and not.
Speaker 3 (01:16:52):
We'll moving on. But let me see what we got. Okay,
we got.
Speaker 2 (01:16:54):
Spurs, Knicks, Yah, Timberwolves, Mavericks.
Speaker 6 (01:17:00):
Fart noise, six Ers, Celtics, same noise, Lakers.
Speaker 2 (01:17:04):
Warriors, Duh, Nuggets, Sons.
Speaker 8 (01:17:10):
M.
Speaker 7 (01:17:13):
Yeah, the NFL slate's looking pretty good. We have like
a Las Vegas Bowl or like a Hula Bowl or something.
Speaker 3 (01:17:19):
The best are you ready for this? Those five games?
The best record in that group is the Warriors at
twelve and five.
Speaker 7 (01:17:26):
Okay, so they beat lebron and the Lakers by twenty
five and all Mike Breen, Doris Burke and everybody will
be able to talk about is well the job that
JJ Reddick is doing here with this roster. Austin Connect,
Dalton Connect his cousin.
Speaker 3 (01:17:41):
Yeah, seven one three.
Speaker 7 (01:17:44):
See that's how important it is. Oh man seven, we'll
get your name.
Speaker 6 (01:17:49):
It's not important enough to no, you.
Speaker 2 (01:17:51):
Will, I mean Dalton Connect keeps itting three pointers like
you is. You'll you'll know his name well enough.
Speaker 7 (01:17:55):
Oh great, well, I can't wait to see it on
the shallow end pull TV shows.
Speaker 3 (01:17:59):
Oh, listen to you.
Speaker 2 (01:18:00):
Seven one three two one two five seven NINTI seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. If you've
got a gut feeling, let's hear it now before we
move on to the news at noon coming up in
about fifteen minutes. What is today's ben't to believe or not?
I got to write this. I'm not used to this.
I need ross pack. That's hartful.
Speaker 10 (01:18:17):
Man.
Speaker 6 (01:18:17):
You don't think I'm creative enough.
Speaker 3 (01:18:19):
Uh yeah, I've seen your work. It's not great. You've tried.
You have the News in noon to worry about.
Speaker 6 (01:18:26):
I think Matt's hosting the rest of the show by himself.
Speaker 3 (01:18:28):
Oh come on, I'm just teasing sort of.
Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
I was gonna say you were almost back, but that
last one right there.
Speaker 3 (01:18:35):
All right, you're you're definitely I couldn't race back. We
appreciate it very much.
Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three.
Speaker 3 (01:18:43):
Oh, you know what we can do? What don't we do?
Why don't we honor Mac Brown? He got fired today
at North Carolina.
Speaker 7 (01:18:47):
That is a perfect one. And you know what, Matt,
that's the one that I was gonna go with.
Speaker 3 (01:18:51):
All right, well, I'm gonna start working on it right now.
Gut feelings in right now.
Speaker 2 (01:18:54):
Seven one three, two one two five seven eleven forty
six on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 6 (01:18:58):
Ninety lunchtime, lunchtime.
Speaker 1 (01:19:01):
This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 2 (01:19:09):
Eleven fifty one, Sports Talk seven ninety. We have the
News in Noon coming up in about ten minutes from now.
We've got news on a football coach being hired, a
football coach being fired. We have the Rockets, we have
Monday Night football from last night. We have Dimiko Ryan
speaking to the media yesterday. All that as part of
the news at noon. Coming up in about ten minutes
(01:19:30):
from now, at twelve thirty, we'll have the NFL rewind
some little nibbles that you did not catch. Connor has
been combing the NFL wires and looking at seeing what's
happening out there in the world of professional football. We'll
have it for you twelve thirty. Willie Fritz is going
to join us at one thirty today. Kevin Barbee his
offensive corner. He relieved him of his duties this morning.
(01:19:53):
Sean Bell the quarterbacks coach and will be the play
caller for this Saturday's game at BYUS. I've won three
two one, two five seven And if you want to
squeeze in a gut feeling between now and the top
of the hours, seven one, three two one two five
seven nine zero, Dan, what.
Speaker 3 (01:20:11):
Else we thinking about today? We've got of going over
a little bit of everything. Am I something I'm missing
at this point? You know?
Speaker 7 (01:20:16):
That's what I'm trying to think about too as well.
I think we've pretty much covered it. I mean, you know,
we got the Texans ad nauseum, a little bit of
that overflow from yesterday, and still I follow the same
rule as you do.
Speaker 6 (01:20:27):
We've covered it. It's still fair game.
Speaker 7 (01:20:29):
So someone three two, one, two, five, seven ninety enough
rockets talk. You know, we've gotten into the Bregmann situation
as well. Now, gut feelings six for one fifty.
Speaker 3 (01:20:41):
Six, by the way, is what Bob Nightingale says.
Speaker 2 (01:20:43):
The astros range would be right if that's what you believe,
and that doesn't feel like it's a crazy number.
Speaker 6 (01:20:51):
I mean, it's pretty much right in line with what
they've done.
Speaker 7 (01:20:53):
I mean, what was the what was the Korea offer
that Korea was like, yeah, you insulted me, not even close,
which in hindsight probably would have been the best thing
that Korea could have done.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
More guaranteed money, that's for sure, easily.
Speaker 5 (01:21:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:21:07):
No, So, I mean that's part of it as well.
And you know a lot of people get hung up
on the ken Rosenthal you know line that he said
about could be looking in the range of like what
Manny Machado got, which was like I think like eleven years,
three hundred plus. But his point was, he did clarify
it on his podcast. He did say, I think that's
what he would want to strive for, not that he
(01:21:29):
would ask for it, but they come no that Bregman.
Speaker 3 (01:21:33):
Oh there's no, he's not getting ten years.
Speaker 7 (01:21:36):
But his point was is that that's why he believes
that the contract, you know, at least his wish would
be to be more towards that than towards what he's
eventually going to get. He's probably going to get a
six seven year, one sixty five to one eighty five range.
Speaker 2 (01:21:55):
Well, he said, again, if you believe a Bob Nightingale
said he wants two hundred million dollars. So if that's
if he's like, if that's the golden number, then it's
gonna have to.
Speaker 3 (01:22:05):
Be a longer deal. Eight years somewhere in that range.
Is I mean, I love Alex, I don't know if
he's a thirty million dollar ball player.
Speaker 7 (01:22:11):
I want I want an endless suite at the top
of the wind. I mean, let's see who's kind a
better opportunity. Well, actually can afford that with the money
he's already made so easily. Yeah, endless line of credit.
Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
Hell, he could probably buy Churchill Downs all that horse
racing stuff he likes.
Speaker 6 (01:22:27):
I was gonna say, yeah, he's quite, he's quite the horseman.
Speaker 2 (01:22:31):
Maybe he wants to be. That's my last contract. That's
that I can go rest with two hundred additional million
dollars coming my way. However, how many years it takes
to me to get that two hundred million dollars.
Speaker 7 (01:22:42):
No, this is the one where you where you go
for rich. I mean, because you're exactly right. I mean,
like I said, he might get a two with a
thirty year option at the end of his career, but
that one will probably be in the fourteen fifteen million
dollar range, which I mean, that's nothing to sneeze at.
But no, this is the one where he's going to
get the most money. It's kind of like we see
(01:23:03):
in the NFL all the time of players when they're upset,
why they get franchise tagged because they're like, no, I
want as much guaranteed money as possible, so that when
you cut me at least I got my money.
Speaker 2 (01:23:13):
Yeah, let's go to Brian in Paarland on seven Ony.
Hi Brian, thanks for holding.
Speaker 13 (01:23:18):
Hey, guys, I just got a gut feeling for you
one that I know you guys will both hopefully root
for on Saturday. I'm calling my shot now going to
the TAPS finals will be the Saint Thomas Eagles with
a win over Liberty Christian and I get Saturday as well.
I will be up at Kyle Field and A and
them will get their thirteen year redemption.
Speaker 3 (01:23:40):
I'm going on the record now they.
Speaker 13 (01:23:42):
Will win it with the last second field goal the
way just or the way they got beat thirteen years ago.
So they will win it with a walk off field
goal to ruin Texas Chintz instead of going to the
SEC title game and possibly the college football Playoff.
Speaker 6 (01:23:58):
I like it. Eagle fight never died. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:24:00):
Is there a spread on that Saint Thomas game?
Speaker 13 (01:24:04):
I do not see one on the TAPS.
Speaker 3 (01:24:07):
They would be.
Speaker 6 (01:24:09):
I was not anticipating they were gonna see.
Speaker 7 (01:24:11):
We're gonna have to check in though with the memorial
book and see what type of action they're taking right
now where the sharp money is.
Speaker 2 (01:24:17):
Yeah, that's crazy, Thank you, Brian. I gotta say this,
and Rossa get mad at me, but he's forty. He's
seven thousand miles away, so I don't care. My son,
my middle son, wears everything. Aggie's on his heart and
it crushed him to see them lose to Auburn last week.
So I'm purely for selfish reasons rooting for A and
(01:24:39):
M to win this week because I want my boy
to be happy.
Speaker 7 (01:24:41):
It's also too, I mean, look, you know, Texas fans,
they they've got everything. They remind you they've got everything.
Let them have a little bit of heartache every once
in a while. Oh we lost to Alabama in the
National championship games.
Speaker 5 (01:24:55):
So what.
Speaker 3 (01:24:57):
No, nobody's thinking that well for Texas. Yeah, I mean
it's yeah, it's gonna say.
Speaker 2 (01:25:03):
No, I don't think anybody feel sorry for anybody at
this point, right.
Speaker 6 (01:25:06):
No, that's my point.
Speaker 7 (01:25:07):
Nobody like, you know, it's okay for them to lose
a hard fought game and oh we didn't make the
college football playoff.
Speaker 6 (01:25:15):
Oh shucks.
Speaker 2 (01:25:16):
Maybe next year, when you give two more kids a Lamborghini,
maybe maybe you'll get back there.
Speaker 3 (01:25:21):
An we can't do that anymore. That's it's all fair.
It's all fair. Now, everything's fine. No I pay pay No.
Speaker 7 (01:25:27):
I get that, And look, I don't begrudge them for
doing it, but it's just also too as well. I'm
going with the mindset of this would mean a lot
more to A and M fans than I think it
would mean to Texas fans, because there are.
Speaker 6 (01:25:39):
A lot of people who think, no, now.
Speaker 3 (01:25:40):
I disagree, Texas a chance to play for a national championship.
Are you kidding?
Speaker 6 (01:25:43):
I think they still get in if if they lose
this game.
Speaker 3 (01:25:47):
Uh, you're probably right, but seating will matter, I think.
Speaker 7 (01:25:51):
Right, Okay, fine, so maybe you know, you get a
home game for the round that is outside the top four,
and maybe you've got to go to you, I don't know,
Tennessee for the next one.
Speaker 3 (01:26:03):
I'm trying to think.
Speaker 2 (01:26:04):
I'm looking at the Marriotte rate right now if you
want to stay at the town place suits college station,
which is a really borderline Marriotte.
Speaker 3 (01:26:11):
Mm hmm, not terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:26:13):
Five ninety three for the night. That's not bad, that's
not I mean six hundred bucks for our hotel room
these days, I mean, in this game, not crazy.
Speaker 7 (01:26:22):
I just I think you're probably also too. I mean,
this is you know, it's funny how like major southern
state universities are in like the most like securitiest routes
to get there from major cities, Like none of them
have major interstates that run through them, so you have
to go these like state roads like two ninety and
Highway six to be able to get over there. But
(01:26:43):
I mean, I think you probably have a lot of
people who will be driving in from Austin or from
here and going back home.
Speaker 3 (01:26:48):
Final is that I could probably sell my son's apartment
for a.
Speaker 2 (01:26:51):
Night and probably make two grand. But you know what,
oh dude, Airbnb like crazy. He's got He's got his
brother and his mother staying with him, so there's no room.
Please me, whele, I'm gonna watch Mike Cougars play the
BWAYU Cougar's some twelve degree weather.
Speaker 7 (01:27:08):
Yeah no, No, no sharing spaces outside of an airplane
with total strangers. Like there was a buddy of mine
who used to always want to do the shared uber
and we had a really really weird guy that got
in it with us, and I looked at him and
I said, never again. I will pay for the r
uber next time. I was like, We're never doing this again.
Speaker 2 (01:27:29):
All right, twelve o'clock News at noon as straight ahead,
we'll talk, get the headlines of the day, get you
back on the phones.
Speaker 3 (01:27:35):
And we have NFL rewind bottom of the hour here
on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (01:27:38):
Ninety lunchtimers, This is the Matt Thomas Show, twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:27:46):
Oh three Sports Talk seven ninety. Matt here from Minneapolis.
Ross is off the day. He is in Argentina, Dann
Matthews and our studios with us today with you till
two o'clock. We have the NFL rewind coming up in
a half an hour. But believe it or not, today things
about Mac Brown and that's part of.
Speaker 3 (01:28:02):
Today's news at noon and we go to the news desk.
Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
But Wes Nesmand of, well, that's actually that's not I'd
be Ted Baxter's from here in Minneapolis, the Ted Baxter
of Houston.
Speaker 7 (01:28:16):
You go, Damn Matthew, there you go, Harvey or whatever
the guy's name was in die Hard all right, Rockets
in NBA Cup game action the night Minneapolis is Matt,
you just talked about taking all the.
Speaker 6 (01:28:27):
Timber Wolves a win.
Speaker 7 (01:28:28):
They move forward to the knockout round for a chance
to get to Vegas for the nd season tournament. Simmis
and I wish them nothing but the very best, hopefully, hopefully.
What's the what's the pregame meal of the night before
up there in Minnesota, Like, what's the Actually.
Speaker 3 (01:28:46):
We went to a seafood restaurant last night where I
had some.
Speaker 2 (01:28:50):
Clam chowder and I had hot fish sandwich.
Speaker 3 (01:28:54):
The batter was really hot.
Speaker 6 (01:28:56):
Seafood in Minneapolis.
Speaker 3 (01:28:59):
It's underrated fish up here.
Speaker 7 (01:29:00):
A lot of lakes, no ice, ice fishing, all of that.
But I mean, you know, I don't know. I just
I think of like Upper Midwest. You know, Shepherd's pie,
maybe some chili, Oh, you know Shepherd's.
Speaker 2 (01:29:10):
I don't like pies like that. Really, I don't like
cast roles. What's you know what I do. I'm I'm
a huge fan. Maybe some meat loafs, some mashed potatoes.
Speaker 3 (01:29:21):
I would do that, Okay, I got on popular take.
I think King Ranch chicken is disgusting.
Speaker 7 (01:29:26):
Like I don't even know what it is, Like I
hear people talk about it all the time. So it's
like basically like with like tortillas and its Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:29:33):
Maybe my wife makes it and all the kids hate it.
Speaker 2 (01:29:35):
I hate it. But she's like, how do you hate
King Ranch Chicken? I said, because it's a.
Speaker 3 (01:29:39):
Gross cast role.
Speaker 7 (01:29:43):
See, I'm all about the cast roles. I mean it's
like if it's all going to mix together anyway. Why
not just go ahead and start the process early.
Speaker 3 (01:29:50):
Alrighty?
Speaker 6 (01:29:50):
Then all right, So former.
Speaker 7 (01:29:52):
Sexas set coach Mac Brown out at North Carolina. He's
going to coach the tar Heels for their game against
NC State. Second stint there with UNC forty four and
thirty two there, they're six and five this season.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
I don't know much about what he's done there. I
know there was a nice warm story coming back a
couple of years ago. But I mean Mac is seventy
three years old. I mean, he's got plenty of money
him and Sally and go back and just retire.
Speaker 3 (01:30:22):
He could do some television if he wanted to help.
Speaker 7 (01:30:24):
Well, by the way, he loved doing TV. Like every
single time I talked with him when he was at UNC,
he would talk about how that experience really gave him
a respect for the media. And I mean, that's going
to be interesting to see if Bill Belichick gets back in,
if he's still kind of the same way with the
media that he was, because it might just be like, hey,
(01:30:45):
you know what, you guys aren't so bad.
Speaker 5 (01:30:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:30:47):
I could see him doing some studio work whatever, not
travel a whole lot, but yeah, I mean yeah, I
mean he's he's.
Speaker 3 (01:30:53):
Done everything humanly possible.
Speaker 2 (01:30:55):
He's he's one of the greatest college football coaches of
all time. And when you didn't get on his bad side,
he loved you. If you got in his bad side,
you lost your job.
Speaker 7 (01:31:04):
That's and also too, I mean what we in the
southeastern part of the country would call the chicken and
green bean circuit. You know, the the keynote speaker at
the I don't know, Making Touchdown Club, at the Little
Rock Touchdown Club, the Houston Touchdown Club. Like that's what
Mac brown.
Speaker 3 (01:31:23):
Wan chicken and bake and green bean circuit.
Speaker 7 (01:31:26):
I mean, you've been to enough like banquets and things
like that where it's you know that or London broil
or something like that.
Speaker 6 (01:31:33):
Like it's a mass produced meal.
Speaker 7 (01:31:35):
That's nice enough, but everybody eats the same thing, the rolls,
the salad, the same chocolate cake.
Speaker 6 (01:31:42):
You know how these things go.
Speaker 2 (01:31:43):
You know they're doing on these days, they're doing a
lot of puddings with these massive meals, and it's not good.
Speaker 3 (01:31:47):
I'm not a big pudding fan.
Speaker 7 (01:31:49):
I like it if it's done well enough. It's got
to be more of like a Custard, though I got you.
Jerry Jones says, we heard the audio earlier saying, it's
not crazy to think that Mike McCarthy could receive a
contract extension to remain the head coach of the Cowboys.
And it's funny, you know, Matt I was talking about
this with Will Kunkle and someone else the other day
outside the Texans locker room. The Cowboys can honestly finish
(01:32:11):
the season eight to nine. And if that happens, I
think that Jerry says he rallied the guys. We you know,
we didn't do a good enough job building the roster
on our end. Let's let's run it back next year
and we get a healthy Dack and we go from there.
It was kind of a half Jerry impersonation. I didn't
go all the way in.
Speaker 2 (01:32:31):
You know, I it's it's hard for me to even
try to guess what he wants to do. Because I
think today when Ward travels around the Dallas sports fans
that Mike McCarthy maybe get an extension. I think people
are are going to be shell shocked if they aren't already.
Speaker 3 (01:32:46):
Like I said I would. I was surprised that they
haven't made a move before before now.
Speaker 2 (01:32:51):
But if you're talking about extending a coach, and again,
I don't think Michael McCarthy's back coach. I just think
there needs to be a complete overhaul. Sometimes you kind
of you got a more changes. Problem is if you're
the number one problem with these of these issues, then
I guess just keep people around close to you that
aren't gonna argue with you, aren't going to fight back.
My guess is Mike McCarthy's like, you know what, you
just give me the roster. I'll do the best I can.
Speaker 7 (01:33:13):
He's still going to give Cowboy fans enough hope to
continue to shell out money and go to AT and
T Stadium and go out to training camp and follow
them on the road. You know, it's I'm telling you all,
it's an endless cycle. In the cycle that keeps spinning.
It is Jerry Like no coach, no player, no anything
(01:33:35):
is going to change that as long as.
Speaker 6 (01:33:37):
Jerry is still there.
Speaker 3 (01:33:39):
Fair enough?
Speaker 7 (01:33:40):
All right, back to college football. Quick mention here, Rice
hiring Davidson coach Scott abel Able. I'm not really sure
how to say his name, but he's gonna be the
next head coach at Rice. He was forty seven and
twenty eight since arriving at Davidson in twenty eighteen.
Speaker 2 (01:33:56):
I like Rice, it's an outstanding institution of higher learning.
They just don't care about athletics. And we should not
pretend that we think that they care about athletics.
Speaker 6 (01:34:06):
They just don't.
Speaker 2 (01:34:06):
I mean, I wish them nothing but the very best,
but they just don't put money into it. It's an afterthought.
The central administration doesn't care. There's a few alums that care,
they don't draw people, they don't put it. I mean,
Rice be better served either dropping down a level or
just stop competing. It's just it's I feel too bad
(01:34:27):
for those kids because I think they're sold. Hey, come
this really insanely awesome academic against institution and look at
our facilities.
Speaker 3 (01:34:35):
And they get there and they're like, oh, nobody cares.
Speaker 7 (01:34:37):
What chances are if you're going to Rice for anything
that's not baseball that you know, baseball is terrible too
right now, it's down, it's not what it used to be.
But I mean you still I mean, the Astros drafted
a guy out of Rice this year, so there's still
players that have an opportunity to make it to the
next level. But yeah, if you're going to play football
or basketball at Rice, you're going there with the express
(01:34:59):
purpose of all play college sports and then I'll go
be a financial guy living up in New York or
oil and gas or something like that. Like you're you're
going there with the express purpose of getting a really
good education and setting yourself up for life.
Speaker 3 (01:35:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:35:14):
I got a text some the listeners as king Ranch
casserole is ass solid take.
Speaker 3 (01:35:18):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 6 (01:35:19):
Here we go. See.
Speaker 7 (01:35:21):
Look, yesterday you had some people on this Twitter sphere
there were against you, and today they're on your side.
Speaker 3 (01:35:26):
They all love me. Today.
Speaker 7 (01:35:28):
Dive into a little bit of hockey just because it
involves a former hockey player, So Connor feel free. Former
NHL enforcer Paul Bisonett involved in a six or.
Speaker 6 (01:35:41):
I guess with him.
Speaker 7 (01:35:41):
It's seven way uh seven way Freakis at a popular
restaurant that we know here in this town that serves
salads with hot bacon dressing, really good burgers and fries
other things on there. The serving staff wears black shirts.
I think you know the players I'm talking about just
they're not a sponsor. But apparently it was a group
(01:36:04):
of six drunk golfers who were refused service and started
to get a little disrespectful with the restaurant's staff. Well,
Bisinette says he goes to this said restaurant that was
in the Scottsdale area and got involved and tried to
break it up, but then also to him being a
former NHL enforcer, let the guys know like, hey, I'm
(01:36:25):
not going to stand for it either. Well, the six
got arrested, and Bisonette went online to talk about that
he was at dinner. He goes there quite a bit.
The staff's incredible, the food's great, all of those different
types of things. One point a bit of a ruckus
going on at the bar, a bunch of drunk golfers.
Things obviously continued to escalate. Then one guy was asked
(01:36:46):
to leave, and one guy kept getting in the manager's face,
put his hands on him, and it went on for
about thirty to forty five seconds, and then it was
finally broken up and cops showed up and arrested the
six guys.
Speaker 2 (01:37:00):
I'm trying to think about the place that has hot
bacon dressing. I think I'm at a a loss.
Speaker 6 (01:37:04):
Don't overthink it, don't overthink it. It's named after a city.
Speaker 3 (01:37:10):
Hot bacon dressing after a city.
Speaker 6 (01:37:13):
They've also oh yeah, but spinach chartist choked dip.
Speaker 3 (01:37:19):
Yeah, and they don't call it Houston's anymore. They called
something else.
Speaker 6 (01:37:22):
Oh I know, but I mean I still remember it.
As you know. There's Kirby Location one off Richmond.
Speaker 3 (01:37:28):
Yeah, all right, A good pull on your part there.
So he went to have dinner and he got a
fight with people.
Speaker 6 (01:37:35):
Well, I mean they started I heard something new.
Speaker 7 (01:37:38):
Yeah, they started it though with being again disrespectful and
even almost getting physical with the restaurant's manager and Paul Bissonette,
like you said, he's a regular there, and he said, no,
this isn't going to happen. And I'm a guy that
showed during my career I'll throw hands. So you want
to go that route, we can go that route.
Speaker 3 (01:37:58):
All right, there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:37:59):
You're not going to get hockey fights at the high
end restaurant.
Speaker 3 (01:38:04):
Talk to me. Any of them are showing the market. Plus,
I can take Africa.
Speaker 7 (01:38:06):
Have you ever seen or been involved in a restaurant
or barbarl.
Speaker 2 (01:38:11):
Well, I've been involved in a brawl in a a
pool haul that served booze.
Speaker 3 (01:38:18):
But I was also under age and shouldn't have been there.
Speaker 7 (01:38:20):
Did you hit somebody with a pool queue or did
they get you?
Speaker 3 (01:38:23):
No? I hit somebody with a pool stick.
Speaker 6 (01:38:25):
Yeah, pool queue, that's it.
Speaker 3 (01:38:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:38:28):
So my friend poked a girl and he did it intentionally,
and he acted like it wasn't intentional, and the boyfriend
saw it, and then that's when everything went crazy. So
then I was helping my friend and I took the
pool stick and hit over the back of the guy,
and then the guy turned around and we started we
ran out. They started ringing the bell at pull Dick
(01:38:52):
really and we ran quickly because I was seventeen years old.
I shouldn't have been there and drinking certainly shouldn't have
been there doing that.
Speaker 7 (01:39:00):
So it's like that part in the movies where you know,
the much bigger guy gets hit with the pool stick
and then turns around and is like, oh, now you're
getting the business.
Speaker 3 (01:39:09):
That's exactly how it turned out.
Speaker 6 (01:39:13):
The story you could have told if you got a
shiner from that.
Speaker 2 (01:39:15):
Matt No, no, you know, I mean I was a
mascot in my high school. I found have gotten a
minor in possession, oh and then thrown in jail out
of lost everything.
Speaker 3 (01:39:25):
I wasn't gonna do.
Speaker 7 (01:39:26):
That, so it would have sent you down the wrong
path in life. So we wouldn't even have the Matt
Thomas show with it.
Speaker 2 (01:39:30):
Yeah, but at least I have a good story out
of it, right, I mean I've had that at least.
I mean, come on, many people have found their ways
to the airwaves with questionable paths.
Speaker 6 (01:39:38):
I think you would have been fine.
Speaker 3 (01:39:39):
Bothered me wasvered, buddy, My buddy.
Speaker 2 (01:39:42):
I was like, don't I know what he was gonna do.
I could see it from a mile away. I said,
don't do this. This guy is going to beat your ass.
And he did it anyway.
Speaker 7 (01:39:51):
Yeah, that's that's a tough situation to be in because
you know you've got bull headed friends and you're just
like short of telling him, dude, if something happens, I'm
jumping in for you, like I'm not getting involved in this.
Speaker 6 (01:40:03):
And then of course your friends, so you have to.
Speaker 2 (01:40:05):
All right, that's the news at noon, Thank you very much.
Bottom of the hour. We have uh the Ross's NFL.
We wound, but he's not here. It's gonna be Connor's
NFL E one.
Speaker 3 (01:40:14):
We have that for you. We will welcome you.
Speaker 2 (01:40:16):
At seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven Ninti Dimiko
spoke a couple of more comments from him in case
you missed it. Next here on Sports Talk seven ninety

Speaker 1 (01:41:28):

We got the Rotten Five.
Speaker 2 (01:42:01):
We may have an A and M Texas preview guest
on you don't know what's going to happen between ten
and two tomorrow?
Speaker 7 (01:42:07):
Do you think with email and just slight suggestion, ever
an in person on the road hand them a headset,
you guys talk.
Speaker 6 (01:42:16):
We're all just there for the conversation. Would that ever happen?
Speaker 10 (01:42:20):
Uh?
Speaker 14 (01:42:20):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:42:20):
Because the equipment I bring with me does only has
one inputs.
Speaker 6 (01:42:23):
That's too bad.
Speaker 3 (01:42:25):
Why why do I want him come to my room,
or what do I want to go to his room?
Speaker 7 (01:42:28):
I mean I just think, you know, it's an in
person personal conversation that we just get to be a
part of.
Speaker 6 (01:42:33):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (01:42:34):
Okay, I could ask. I don't know if it's going
to happen, but I usually catch him at lunchtime, so
it's easy.
Speaker 5 (01:42:41):
You know.
Speaker 7 (01:42:43):
Maybe maybe maybe the boundary of the phone is a
good thing. I mean, you guys get the the personal
conversation before the game the game. Yeah, see, you don't
want to come across as unreasonable. I get that, I
get that, but it was it was a bad idea
by me. Why don't strike that speaking of you threw
out for people who normally don't get a chance to
(01:43:03):
call in earlier? Ye would you be open to maybe educators, teachers, superintendents, coaches.
Speaker 3 (01:43:14):
We had a superintendent's wife called the.
Speaker 7 (01:43:15):
Shiit See, and that's what gave me the idea. Because
where I'm going with this is my mom for her
air quotes retirement, taught in Burnett, ID. She taught middle
school special ed and she would tell me about the
either Christmas break or end of year happy hours that
teachers and everybody would go on. And she said, that
(01:43:36):
it was basically just a chance for teachers to get
a couple of drinks in them and start talking about
how rotten certain kids were. Really, yes, like my mom
was like god, I almost like kind of felt terrible
listening to this because it's like you're supposed to like
you know, I mean, I get it.
Speaker 6 (01:43:53):
Some kids are just rotten kids.
Speaker 7 (01:43:56):
So you know, we all knew the troublemakers in school,
and I'm sure probably teachers felt that way. But it
just was funny to realize, like, yeah, like teachers actually
do you know, talk about us behind our backs just
like we do with them.
Speaker 3 (01:44:09):
Oh hell yeah, there has to be. I mean they're
they're human. We all talk about bad about each other.
Speaker 7 (01:44:14):
I mean apparently the teachers' lounges are like the the
ultimate spilling of the tea, Like that is where it's
fourth period, you know, Johnny again, I can't stand that kid,
and I try to talk to his parents and blah
blah blah. Yeah, that's that's all out there. So seven
one three, two one two five seven ninety. If you
feel inclined, no names, though I don't. I don't want
(01:44:35):
to get you in trouble at the school.
Speaker 2 (01:44:37):
No no, you can know if you are an educator,
and you can you don't get to call her f
like for instance, my uh daughter's high school. I think
the cross country coach listens to the show all the time,
and for that I thank him for that. So I mean,
I see it's you're off this week.
Speaker 3 (01:44:52):
Uh no.
Speaker 2 (01:44:52):
But the thing you used to wig me out was
seeing my teachers in public, you know, grocery store or
restaurant that that would alway always freak me out.
Speaker 7 (01:45:01):
Yeah, it was Connor, go ahead and get the bell ready.
They talk about it in the movie Mean Girls, where
they saw Tina Fay's character and they're like, seeing a
teacher out in public, it's almost like seeing a dog
on its hind legs. I mean it's yeah, it's kind
of jarring because you know, you ask.
Speaker 3 (01:45:18):
You a question, Dan, please, because people are you have
all this.
Speaker 2 (01:45:21):
Movie knowledge in your head and you've got sports information
in your head, right m M. What's not in that
head that you have gotten rid of because you have
the other stuff in your head?
Speaker 7 (01:45:34):
Financial advice, financial retention, probably love advice as well, because
I get that all the time of you're not listening
to me.
Speaker 3 (01:45:45):
Because I could say this.
Speaker 2 (01:45:46):
I can give you the lineups for like a variety
of different sports teams that I loved growing up.
Speaker 3 (01:45:51):
But if my wife says, remember when Cameron was five
years old and did this and.
Speaker 2 (01:45:54):
I don't remember, she gets super mad. So I told
her I've told us all the time. I said, I
have sports facts in my head that have covered up
memories of Carly's third birthday. It's not a great thing
to say to your wife because they can obviously they
consider that very serious stuff. Yeah, yeah, no, I mean
(01:46:17):
it's not something I'm proud of.
Speaker 6 (01:46:18):
Trust me.
Speaker 7 (01:46:19):
If I could have those other bits of information and
not remember as much on this end, I would absolutely
make that trade, for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:46:25):
Because I think what I want to do. I think
I'm speaking of behalf of all of Houston. We want
to drain your brain up movies.
Speaker 7 (01:46:31):
And quotes too. I mean, it's all encompassing, I'm sure.
I just think, at thirty nine years old, Matt, that's
going to be a really tough ask.
Speaker 3 (01:46:42):
You're probably right.
Speaker 7 (01:46:42):
I think my programming is pretty much set and just
get an update here and there until Elon Musk can
come along and be able to try to develop something
that can accomplish that for you. Yeah, and until then,
I think you're stuck with this version.
Speaker 3 (01:46:58):
Yeah, you just come along, your bringing up all the
sports analysis.
Speaker 2 (01:47:01):
And you go and at the end of the day,
it's like, uh, you know watching uh you know, uh a,
I can't even name a movie.
Speaker 3 (01:47:09):
I don't I don't watch movies. I don't even know.
It's just a Wall Street and remember what happened in
Wallstroman is like like.
Speaker 2 (01:47:14):
What, Yeah, it's it's one of my go to moves.
It's it makes you it's one of my projects.
Speaker 3 (01:47:19):
Dan, I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I wouldn't change it.
Speaker 7 (01:47:21):
That's just like if you listen to the Joe Rogan Show,
one way or another, he'll either tie it back into
fight sports or his time when he hosted Fear Factor.
Speaker 3 (01:47:30):
All right, there you go, Hey, let's do this. Let's
get to Connor McGovern involved. He's gonna give us the
NFL rewind some of the things we didn't catch.
Speaker 2 (01:47:36):
From this past weekend, and that'll be coming up next
here on the program.
Speaker 3 (01:47:40):
If you want to join us.
Speaker 2 (01:47:42):
And if you could possibly do it, pull a Damn
Matthews and reciting movie within your sports take, we'll give
you special props for that, because it does take a
special art to do that. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven Nati. We got that coming up. We have
Willie Fritz is going to join us in one hour
from now. He has made a coaching change and we'll
talk about that with him in just a few minutes.
(01:48:05):

Speaker 3 (01:48:54):
Text it on three.
Speaker 1 (01:48:56):
Back to battle Red Ross Already white ass, Matt Thomas.
Speaker 6 (01:49:03):
Is what I am Real Pale Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:49:06):
Talk continues on Matt Thomas Show. That remains the rudest
introduction of a segment. I think in Houston sports.
Speaker 6 (01:49:19):
It's tremendous. It's terrible, it's tremendous.
Speaker 3 (01:49:22):
It's embarrassing. Mm hmmmm.
Speaker 6 (01:49:26):
So do I soon enough become deep steel blue Dan?
Speaker 3 (01:49:30):
Well? I mean, are you a Texans homer?
Speaker 6 (01:49:33):
I mean I want him to do well? If that
makes me a Texans homer, I guess so maybe?
Speaker 3 (01:49:38):
Okay, Well, then we'll call you deep still.
Speaker 7 (01:49:39):
Then then you know what, then I won't disappoint you.
Next year at training camp when they're in shorts and helmets,
I will tweet out every little positional win for you
I've got.
Speaker 3 (01:49:50):
You'll be blocked immediately.
Speaker 7 (01:49:53):
Plus with uh, you know, videos of me recapping practice
for you.
Speaker 2 (01:49:59):
I got that you'll start to on YouTube page because
Lauren knows wass not enough of those locked on Texans
all right? Seven one three two one, two, five, seven,
ninety time. Now for well, Ross is not here to
do it. Ross is in Panama, and today it'll be
(01:50:20):
up to connom govern for a second straight week on
the NFL rewet, what do you got Today?
Speaker 4 (01:50:24):
Week twelve wrapped up last night with the Harball brothers
facing off again on Monday Night Football. The Baltimore Ravens
defeated the Los Angeles Chargers thirty to twenty three. Justin
Herbert and the Chargers got off to an early lead
into the second quarter. However, the Ravens offense responded, scoring
on five straight drives, reaching the end zone four times
and converting three fourth downs against a very strong Chargers defense.
Speaker 15 (01:50:46):
Wall at the forty good protection aired out Bateman downfield.
Hannies got it for the touchdown you saw the That
call is against the Chargers and this touchdown will stand.
Speaker 4 (01:51:05):
While Derek Henry didn't reach the end zone, he was
still dominant, rushed for one hundred and forty yards on
twenty four carries. John Harbam prus to a three to
zero record over his younger brother Jim. Last time the
brothers coached against each other with Super Bowl forty seven
eleven years.
Speaker 2 (01:51:17):
Ago, his team is so much better than the Chargers.
Speaker 3 (01:51:24):
I mean, I don't mean to be rude, but man,
Baltimore's good.
Speaker 2 (01:51:28):
Baltimore versus Houston, who'd be the favorite in that playoff
game right the second?
Speaker 3 (01:51:31):
Be honest? If the game was this.
Speaker 2 (01:51:33):
Weekend, Baltimore minus four in Houston, yep, early start time?
Would would he be on the Peacock or on the
Amazon or depending being the eight ocho?
Speaker 7 (01:51:45):
So, I mean, yeah, if they were going to do
it as the way that they did it last year,
then probably of AFC, AFC, NFC, NFC because the other
one I think would be Steelers and Chargers and of
course Pittsburgh.
Speaker 6 (01:52:00):
And yeah they they would be the early start time.
Speaker 3 (01:52:04):
M m m yeah they.
Speaker 2 (01:52:07):
I don't know how they're gonna go out of this.
They're gonna they're gonna have to, hopefully, think. I mean,
if Pittsburgh holds onto that division, Baltimore being the wald
card is not premium at all, not a good spot
for the Texans because they looked really good last night,
especially the second half.
Speaker 7 (01:52:21):
I think the Texans would be favored over the Steelers
if indeed that does happen.
Speaker 2 (01:52:25):
Yeah, I agree, I agree, I think I think I
think that you want Pittsburgh way more than you want
Baltimore in your facility.
Speaker 6 (01:52:33):
I mean, even the Chargers kind of worry me with
the way that Justin Herbert flings it around.
Speaker 3 (01:52:37):
Yep, all right, what else you got?
Speaker 4 (01:52:39):
The night before was Sunday Night Football at SOFI Stadium,
so back to back primetime games in Los Angeles. The
Philadelphia Eagles took down the Rams thirty seven to twenty take.
The main takeaway from this game is that Saquon Barkley
might become the first running back since twenty twelve to
win MVP. Barkley said a career high three hundred and
two yards from scrimmage and broke the franchise record for
single game rushing yards with two hundred fifty five yards milestone.
Speaker 3 (01:53:03):
A six yard shive career high for yards.
Speaker 6 (01:53:07):
He's good lot, no season a player.
Speaker 4 (01:53:16):
The Eagles are riding a seven game winning streak and
have a shot of being the NFC's top seed. Matthew
Stafford and the Rams offensive line struggled, allowing five sacks
and eleven quarterback hicks hits. However, the Rams are just
a game out of first place and a tightly contested
NFC West.
Speaker 2 (01:53:31):
Yeah, that MC West is not spectacular. Arizona's going to
Minnesota this week. They're probably gonna lose that game. Rams
are just pedestrian. And you know what Niners lost last
week at Green Bay.
Speaker 3 (01:53:43):
Maybe boys, it takes. Maybe you could have a losing
record in the NFC West and still win the division.
Would that be crazy?
Speaker 6 (01:53:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (01:53:50):
I mean nine and eight, and it's happened before. I mean,
what was it Seattle?
Speaker 6 (01:53:53):
Yeah? And yeah, I mean when when they beat New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (01:53:57):
I mean it was Seattle that was below and they
played the Saints beat them. I remember that.
Speaker 7 (01:54:01):
In the NFC South, it happened too. I want to
say there was one year because of a tie that
I think the Panthers won because they had six wins.
Speaker 3 (01:54:13):
No, they did not win a division with six games.
Speaker 7 (01:54:15):
I want to I think it was the year that
Mike Smith got fired because they crushed the Falcons in
that final game and then Mike Smith got fired the
next day. I want to say it was twenty fifteen.
Speaker 3 (01:54:25):
They won the division with six and ten record.
Speaker 7 (01:54:27):
I don't think there was six and ten. I think
there were six, nine and one.
Speaker 3 (01:54:32):
And one of the division.
Speaker 6 (01:54:33):
Mm hmmm.
Speaker 3 (01:54:34):
I will bet you a lunch that you're wrong.
Speaker 7 (01:54:39):
All right, there were seven and eight? All right, I
was gonna say so the tow boy on me. Congratulations.
Speaker 3 (01:54:45):
All right, what do we win? What did I win?
Speaker 6 (01:54:47):
You know, we'll go.
Speaker 2 (01:54:47):
We'll go to hot bacon, salad, dressing lunch. Yeah about
the spina chard choked it. I'm game, let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:54:53):
All right, I'm off for that. Yeah, I'll take They
don't take cash at that place anymore. By the way,
it's all credit.
Speaker 6 (01:55:00):
I mean I rarely over carry cash.
Speaker 7 (01:55:01):
The only time all carry cash is either going to
Vegas or if I'm traveling.
Speaker 3 (01:55:05):
Oh, very good. Nice going at him claiming that's good.
Appreciate that.
Speaker 7 (01:55:08):
I mean, why go to a place and have the Hey,
oh you don't take cash?
Speaker 6 (01:55:13):
Okay, here's my car, garry.
Speaker 2 (01:55:15):
Everybody listen to me very carefully. You must carry twenty dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:55:18):
In cash for you at all times, just in case.
Speaker 2 (01:55:20):
Because you don't want to be the d that. Well,
I would help you chip in bet on any cash. Yeah,
I've heard that from many, many people in my life.
Speaker 7 (01:55:27):
Well, because the Lord invented the thing called venmo for
a reason.
Speaker 2 (01:55:31):
All right, Well, people don't seem to be dropping the
Venmo cart. All right, continue, I'm sorry, no, that's on
my soapbox.
Speaker 4 (01:55:37):
After losing to the Texans and Arlington, the Dallas Cowboys
snapped their five game losing streak, beating the Washington Commanders
thirty four to twenty six on the road. The Cowboys
have Dac Prescott and de Marcus Lawrence, Zach Martin, Trayvon Diggs,
and Brandon Cooks all on injured reserved, and one of
their best offensive linemen, Tyler Smith, was ruled out on Sunday,
but the Cowboys overcame two missed field goals and a
deflective punt to hold off the Commanders, who nearly pulled
(01:55:59):
off an amazing back. Camante Turpin scored a ninety nine
yard kick return touchdown, but the Commanders scored ten points
in the final one hundred seconds.
Speaker 6 (01:56:06):
Yet all they needed was a game time each point,
and they missed it.
Speaker 3 (01:56:10):
Kind of a minute, no time out.
Speaker 14 (01:56:12):
Staniels stores down the.
Speaker 6 (01:56:13):
Side, time for turn.
Speaker 3 (01:56:14):
To te.
Speaker 6 (01:56:17):
Jesus light in.
Speaker 1 (01:56:19):
Stretts plays iscington.
Speaker 6 (01:56:24):
For the time by snack.
Speaker 14 (01:56:27):
It is good.
Speaker 4 (01:56:29):
The Cowboys stealed the victory after returning an on side
kick for fourty three yards and for a touchdown. The
Cowboys aren't really going anywhere in the playoff race, but
they're playing the disruptor as the Commanders are on a
three game losing streak.
Speaker 3 (01:56:42):
M Are they gonna be? Who Philadelphie is gonna win
that division? Clear? They're playing better football?
Speaker 2 (01:56:53):
Can the can the Commanders play themselves out of a
playoff spot? Especially if you get more than one NFC
North team in the playoffs?
Speaker 3 (01:57:03):
Maybe three?
Speaker 6 (01:57:04):
Oh? Easily? Yeah, they easily can.
Speaker 7 (01:57:08):
They're the seventh right now, as is the team that's
right behind them is actually a team that's in that
no good division you were talking about NFC West.
Speaker 2 (01:57:18):
So are you ready to tell me that two teams
at NFC West are gonna make the playoffs?
Speaker 6 (01:57:22):
Could?
Speaker 3 (01:57:22):
I mean?
Speaker 6 (01:57:23):
The Cardinals are six and five?
Speaker 2 (01:57:26):
Niners are gonna be Look, the Niners are going to
Buffalo this week.
Speaker 3 (01:57:29):
They have to beat the Bills or they're toast.
Speaker 6 (01:57:34):
Be a tough one.
Speaker 2 (01:57:35):
They don't literally have to, but I think they're gonna
they for their own mental health, they're.
Speaker 3 (01:57:39):
Gonna have to.
Speaker 6 (01:57:40):
Yeah, pretty much.
Speaker 7 (01:57:41):
The teams that they have to worry about the most,
them being the Commanders are the Cardinals in Tampa Bay.
Speaker 6 (01:57:47):
Not so much worried about.
Speaker 3 (01:57:48):
Way maybe playing that game after all, because he didn't
play last week. Bad shoulder, all right, anything.
Speaker 4 (01:57:54):
Else, Yeah, we'll talk about Kayley Williams and the Bears
were this close to upsetting in Minnesota Vikings, but Sam
led the Vikings to a thirty to twenty seven overtime victory.
The Vikings were up eleven points in the final twenty
two seconds of regulation, but Caleb Williams led the offense
on an a play a play drive. The results in
a touchdown and a successful two point conversion. However, the
Vikings lets an on side kick hit Johnny Muntz in
(01:58:17):
the foots and the Bears recovered. Caleb Williams got the
Bears in the field goal range and forced overtime. The
Bears won the toss, but the Vikings forced a three
and out. Sam Donald got the ball and set up
the Vikings for a game time for the game winning
field goal.
Speaker 14 (01:58:31):
Twenty nine yards for the Way, good snap, good hold,
good kick, and the Minnesota Vikings win it it over
time thirty to twenty seven.
Speaker 4 (01:58:44):
Sam Donald is the quarterback story of the season, as
the Vikings are within a game of the Detroit Lions
and the NFC North and have their next three games
at home against the Cardinals, Falcons, and Bears again and.
Speaker 3 (01:58:53):
By the way, they are the favorites.
Speaker 2 (01:58:54):
Because I'm here in Minneapolis to land Daniel Jones, who
cleared waivers yesterday by the New York Giants that are
being released.
Speaker 6 (01:59:02):
What a find.
Speaker 3 (01:59:04):
Well, I mean it's it's not a terrible backup. I
mean I wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (01:59:06):
I wouldn't let him be my start of my football team,
but as a backup, he'd be fun.
Speaker 5 (01:59:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:59:11):
Sam Donald's kind of carved out the uh new Ryan
Fitzpatrick career. I mean, that's pretty much what he's gonna
be for his entire career. Of now, you're good enough
to be a starter until Donald.
Speaker 2 (01:59:21):
If Sam Donald leads to the vikings of the championship
or the NFC champion, well for that mess super Bowl,
it's gotta be one of the greatest rebound stories in
the history of the NFL.
Speaker 7 (01:59:30):
Yeah, I'm not saying that's uh, you know, Pooh pooh
the guy, But I mean I just know that they
drafted JJ McCarthy for a reason.
Speaker 6 (01:59:37):
They're gonna want to see what JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 3 (01:59:39):
Has mm hm. But are you really gonna build your
team around Sam Donald?
Speaker 7 (01:59:45):
No, because, like I just told you, that's what he's
going to He's gonna be what Joe Flacco is now,
Like Joe Flacco is good enough to be able to play,
and he won't completely wreck the car for you, but
he's also not going to be the reason that you
win the game.
Speaker 2 (01:59:57):
It's Sam Donald playing quarterback for another football team next season.
Speaker 3 (02:00:01):
How about that?
Speaker 6 (02:00:01):
Absolutely guaranteed?
Speaker 3 (02:00:03):
Okay, and that was the NFL we one. Thank you
very much Connor for that.
Speaker 2 (02:00:07):
Twelve forty four Sports Talk seven Anti Matt here in Minneapolis,
Dan back in Houston, You guys are welcome to be
a part of the show and Lydia's as well. Uh
seven one three two one two five seven And if
you want to jump in seven one three two one two.
Speaker 3 (02:00:21):
Five seven, Honi. Let's get a couple of comments in
from Dimico from yesterday just to kind of see how
the room is for our beloved Texans as they get
ready for yet another must win game this week? Did
I say it was a must win game last week? Boys?
Did I say that?
Speaker 6 (02:00:38):
I don't remember if you did.
Speaker 3 (02:00:41):
This has to be a must win week, not literally
but figuratively.
Speaker 6 (02:00:45):
Yes, yeah, it is.
Speaker 7 (02:00:46):
You lose this when you're in some pretty serious trouble,
especially with you.
Speaker 2 (02:00:49):
You have to have more team meetings and you're gonna
have to really you. You'll you'll have had one back up.
You'll have lost back to back games the teams that
have less than three wins.
Speaker 3 (02:00:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:01:01):
By the way, one more thing about putting a ball
on last week's game. There is somebody on on Twitter.
I don't even know who this person is. You know,
when I go to the for you tab, that's bad
things happen for me. There is somebody that's out there saying,
you know, Amy's drunk, crunk, she works hard, she's charitable,
(02:01:21):
she's a great.
Speaker 3 (02:01:22):
Owner, blah blah, blah blah blah, and then Hannah's cow's
husband or wife.
Speaker 2 (02:01:28):
M h. Now, while that may be true, I don't
think anybody outside of Nashville thinks that Amy krunk shrunk
is a nice is a good owner.
Speaker 7 (02:01:38):
I mean a lot of people were criticizing her for
canning Mike Rabel.
Speaker 3 (02:01:44):
It hadn't worked out for him.
Speaker 2 (02:01:46):
She's saying, I just this false, this this false love
for her. Maybe something that she's related to that put
that out there, but I was like, I almost wanted
to retweet saying I think you're seeing a different side
of Amy Krunk that we don't see.
Speaker 3 (02:01:58):
Mighties, Maybe it's so maybe.
Speaker 2 (02:02:01):
So seven one three two one two five seven Oni
CJ on not CJ, but uh Demko on how things
are in Texanville after a very disappointing loss.
Speaker 3 (02:02:11):
Next here on seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (02:02:13):
This is Craig Ackerman. The locans are certainly top on
the polypropylene.
Speaker 16 (02:02:17):
I know Matt Thomas all too well.
Speaker 2 (02:02:20):
Hey, by the way, this is my new catchphrase, nothing
but nylon.
Speaker 5 (02:02:30):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (02:02:30):
Craig Ackerman's a bit steealer. It's like everybody is. It's fine.
I can live with it. It's the sincerest form of flattery.
Speaker 6 (02:02:39):
Right, of course, it is.
Speaker 2 (02:02:42):
Twelve fifty one Sports Talk seven Nintie Matt here in Minneapolis.
Uh Dana's back in Houston. You guys and ladies are
welcome to join us throughout the course to show if
you'd like to. At seven one three two one two
five seven ninety, let's hear more from what CJ had
to say. I keep doing that, Why Cj'll speak it
won't be till let's hear from what Tamiko had to
(02:03:02):
say about watching his football team take a very very
painful loss of Tennessee on Sunday.
Speaker 7 (02:03:10):
Yeah, he of course saw what we all saw. The
first half. It was at least somewhat better offensively. In
the second half it sucked. But Dimiko talking about the
mistakes all throughout the game, and he says, hey, don't
just focus on the ones in the first half or
in the second half.
Speaker 9 (02:03:28):
They're happened in the first as well. Those things happen
in the first half as well. Right, there are mistakes
that happened all throughout the game, but just the second
half for us, we haven't scored enough points. We haven't
stopped enough people in the second half from scoring points
on us as well. Defensively, second half, like we have
to make sure we play well as well. We've been
(02:03:49):
outscored a lot of points in the second half, and
that got to keep them off the board and we
got to be able to score in the re zone.
Speaker 7 (02:03:58):
I understand his ante there, Matt, but it's also too
I mean, as we talked about up until last week
in Dallas, you went an entire calendar month without scoring
an offensive touchdown in the second half. Like, I kind
of feel like sometimes when they're asked questions, they dodge
the answer because they don't have the answer. I mean,
I said it yesterday with Bobby Slowick. But it's like,
(02:04:21):
understand the merit of being asked about the mistakes in
the second half, Like just say, yeah, we're awful in
the second half offensively, we're terrible.
Speaker 6 (02:04:29):
As a matter of fact.
Speaker 2 (02:04:32):
Well, do you think it's you think it's his demeanor
is that when someone comes after somebody in life, we
all do this that instead of answering the question head on,
you deflect towards another part of And I wish I
had a good analogy for this. Wellbey, you know, I
don't want to give you analogy because I'm a terrible
analogy person. But yeah, point quick directly, what's the problem
(02:04:54):
with the second half? His answers typically return of, well,
we also have problems in the first half too.
Speaker 7 (02:04:59):
Yeah, I mean it's I mean, I'm not going to
say it's gaslighting, but I mean it's it's kind of like,
you know, you're talking bad about someone and maybe they
don't have as huge a problem with that person as
you do, and usually people's way to kind of diffuse
it as hey, look they've always been good to me, whatever.
But it's also too if you want to get confrontational
with it, hey, look you've got issues on your own
(02:05:20):
end as well. Like that's that's kind of where I'm
going at with the here. I'll call it it's it's
it's gaslighting. I mean, it's it's you know, just kind
of you know, saying all right, yeah, we know we've
got problems, but you know you've got problems as well,
and you don't know what we're trying to call. Like
he's not doing it in a confrontational way, but it's
also where it's you're not exactly, at least to us,
(02:05:44):
taking ownership of what is happening.
Speaker 3 (02:05:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:05:47):
Yeah, I think he's probably just tired of seeing it,
first and foremost, because he's on the field watching it happen,
and he's certainly tired of trying to answer questions about it.
Speaker 6 (02:05:56):
Yeah. I can understand that as well.
Speaker 7 (02:05:58):
What we did see on Sunday in the game against
Tennessee was the inability to be able to run the
football like it was non existent. It wasn't even close
to any of the other games that we've seen from
Joe Mixon or whoever you hand the football off to
in the backfield. He ran the ball for twenty two
yards in that game. His lowest total previous was forty
(02:06:19):
six against the Detroit Lions. So both times at home
it's not been great. And Demiko talked about having trouble
running the ball.
Speaker 5 (02:06:26):
Hey, well, land to issues in a run game. We
did it.
Speaker 9 (02:06:29):
We didn't block them well enough and we didn't finish
our blocks like we were on guys and we didn't finish.
I don't it was nothing that they did, like we
just got to finish our blocks. Especially when we're on
the second level, we have to stay attached.
Speaker 5 (02:06:41):
Like a lot of.
Speaker 9 (02:06:42):
Times we're getting up to the second level, but we're
not staying attached on the linebackers or the safeties and
they're shooting a gap and making those plays.
Speaker 5 (02:06:50):
That doesn't change in all the football.
Speaker 9 (02:06:52):
Like you work up to the second level, you have
to finish or the guys gonna make a move and
make the play.
Speaker 5 (02:06:57):
So that's just the mindset for us.
Speaker 9 (02:06:59):
We didn't handle the edge as well well enough to
get the ball on a perimeter as well.
Speaker 14 (02:07:07):
Well.
Speaker 7 (02:07:07):
That tells me is then those guys don't want physicality,
because that's the most basic block in football for alignment
is run blocking. I mean, nobody grows up in Pop
Warner football that plays on the offensive line throwing the
football that comes later. That's in high school, that's in
middle school. Maybe the most basic is blocking for the run.
(02:07:29):
And if you don't want to do it, it just shows
me that you don't want to be physical.
Speaker 2 (02:07:34):
But I hear a lot of people say that, what
do you mean by saying he doesn't want to be physical?
Are you saying that the offensive line is finesse driven
that it doesn't want to push guys around.
Speaker 6 (02:07:46):
I mean, I think they want to se it.
Speaker 2 (02:07:49):
It's hard for me to as never taken a snap
as an offensive lineman saying, man, and look, I'm not
a big Laramie Tunsil fan at all. I think he's
been largely overrated as a Houston Texan and the amount
of mine that has been spent for the little production
he's given has disappointed me. But it's hard for me
to tell a bunch of three hundred pounds alignemen who
are down in the stands like that that you're not
(02:08:10):
playing it to as a physical level, as you can
be out you can be out worked, but physical meaning
they just give up on plays.
Speaker 3 (02:08:18):
And I don't think that's the case to you.
Speaker 7 (02:08:20):
No, I don't see a lack of effort anywhere on
this team. I just see a team that honestly just
makes dumb decisions that lead to untimely penalties. And that's
what I think we've seen, not only in the game
against Tennessee. You saw it to some extent against Detroit.
You definitely saw it in even wins this year against
(02:08:40):
Indianapolis against Buffalo as well. I mean, I think there's
a difference between wanting to be physical and actually knowing
that you can be. Like I've learned all throughout my
life around football that it's either you either want to
be that player or it's just not in you.
Speaker 6 (02:08:58):
And maybe it's just not in these guys be that way.
Speaker 2 (02:09:01):
Yeah, So what if you were to give the advice
we go to get to a top of the hour here,
what would you tell the lineman if we're talking about
not finishing through their progressions. Are they giving up on
the place too soon? Are they letting are they.
Speaker 3 (02:09:20):
Assuming that Joe Mixon can do all the heavy lifting
by himself.
Speaker 7 (02:09:24):
I think they're a line that's more suited to being
much better for the passing game. And I mean it
worked out incredibly well last year when you weren't really
that good running the football, and this year, I mean
you heard Demiko say it, you heard Bobby Slowak say it,
that they wanted to run the football. You just don't
have the guys that are able to do that. I mean, remember,
(02:09:45):
you know, back in the air raid days when it
was very in vogue. I mean now it's kind of,
you know, taking on a different form in college football,
but I mean you had players coming out of programs
that were built for that type of offense. And the
ca in point I can bring up here is when
Mac Brown wanted to go to more of a pro
style offense and people were saying, well, coach, you can't
(02:10:06):
do that because you don't have the guys up front
that are going to have to take on that physicality
that that type of offense requires.
Speaker 2 (02:10:15):
All Right, those are the offensive line thoughts and the
great all line guru. His name is Dan Matthews. I'll
bind into it. It makes a lot of sense to me.
Final Hour includes Willie Fritz in thirty minutes Believe it
or not, Today all things about Mac Brown, who's out
today as head football coach at North Colina. He will
coach their final game this week against North Carolina State.
Twelve fifty nine on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (02:10:35):
N eighty lunchtimers, This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 3 (02:10:42):
The final hour of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (02:10:45):
Ross is off today. He is on vacation. He's in Antarctica.
I hope he's dressed warm for the occasion. Dan Matthews
in this hour seven one, three, two, two five seven
Hony Gored View with me to Marrows. We have a
plethora of guests and fun thing to do to wrap
up the week. We are off Thursday and Friday, but
we will be up in Probo, Utah for the Cougars
(02:11:07):
game this Saturday against BYU. I'm going to Philadelphia first
tomorrow and then back to Houston for Thanksgiving and then
heading up to Utah on Friday. Headlines today Rockets take
on the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight.
Speaker 3 (02:11:23):
Dan. We mentioned this a little while ago.
Speaker 2 (02:11:25):
If you're not a huge basketball fan, just want to
see a bizarre court, check out the Target Center tonight.
Speaker 7 (02:11:29):
Correct yeah, it's gonna be an interesting one for your
eyes up there. Of course you'll be on the call.
We'll be back here in studio as I'll have the
launch pad and wrap. But it is a very bright
lime green, which, by the way, too, will that out
mess with the cameras? Cuz don't cameras have a tough
time with green. That's why they have green screens.
Speaker 6 (02:11:50):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:11:50):
That's a great question. We'll find out later tonight. You
got to text me and tell me how bad it
looks on this. I mean, I would assume that all
these courts have been tested out to make sure they
look decent.
Speaker 6 (02:11:59):
I would think so.
Speaker 7 (02:12:00):
I mean, yeah, maybe you do a little bit of
extra white balance. I mean, I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 6 (02:12:04):
You know the intricacies of cameras, so nor do I.
Speaker 2 (02:12:07):
All Right, we got Mac brown is out at North
Carolina Hill coach one more game.
Speaker 3 (02:12:11):
He's the subject of Believe it or Not.
Speaker 2 (02:12:13):
Today we have the Baltimore Ravens disposing of the Chargers
last night. Texans are off today. Back on the practice
field tomorrow getting ready for Sunday's game at Jacksonville. Aggie's
and Longhorns starting to work this week towards the game
on Saturday game DA I'm.
Speaker 3 (02:12:30):
Assuming is there correct?
Speaker 6 (02:12:31):
Yeah, it's in College station.
Speaker 3 (02:12:34):
Well, I would hope so the games in college station.
I wouldn't expecting to be in Austin.
Speaker 7 (02:12:37):
Well, I mean sometimes they do have game day elsewhere,
like I mean last week for example, and by the
way to Kirk Curve Street on with Sean Salisbury this morning.
Good conversation there. It's up on Sports Talk seven to
ninety dot com, free iHeartRadio app. But like last week,
he was in Columbus for the Ohio State Indiana game,
and then he flew down to Norman for the Oklahoma
(02:13:01):
Alabama game.
Speaker 3 (02:13:02):
Yeah, bobow huge upset. Nobody thoughtought that was going to happen.
Speaker 6 (02:13:05):
It was massive.
Speaker 7 (02:13:06):
I mean, Alabama feeling a lot better, kind of taking
a deep breath of Okay, Hey, maybe Caleen de Bor
is not that bad.
Speaker 6 (02:13:13):
We can make the playoff and then pow, you were terrible.
Speaker 3 (02:13:17):
Jalen Millroll is not very good?
Speaker 14 (02:13:18):
Is he?
Speaker 3 (02:13:19):
Honestly, it's just okay?
Speaker 7 (02:13:22):
Yes, yes, I would say that probably that game against
LSU inflated people's opinion of him, but overall, yes, probably
just okay.
Speaker 3 (02:13:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:13:34):
So let me ask you this, because you follow the
college game a lot tighter than I do. Tell me,
give me some scenarios that would rock the college football
world this weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:13:43):
I would think first and foremost and.
Speaker 2 (02:13:45):
M beating Texas would would would be crazy for the SEC, correct.
Speaker 7 (02:13:50):
Yeah, I mean that if Michigan was able to pull
off the upset over Ohio States, I think that would
probably do that. I'm trying to think, who could you know,
kind of throw chaos into the scenario. Oregon plays against Washington,
don't see that. Keep an eye out for Georgia Tech
at Georgia. That could be an interesting one.
Speaker 2 (02:14:12):
How about in the Big Twelve, any surprise Houston beating
by you would not BILLU.
Speaker 3 (02:14:17):
Obviously out of the correct Big Twelve race.
Speaker 7 (02:14:19):
Yeah, you would. You would have that. You would have
Arizona State at Arizona. I mean, I think short of
Arizona State being able to win the Big Twelve, that
wouldn't do too much. Yeah, I mean that's about it's
I mean Miami at Syracuse, No, Maryland Penn State.
Speaker 10 (02:14:40):
No.
Speaker 2 (02:14:40):
Like there's a four way tie right now in the
Big Twelve with four teams and two losses.
Speaker 6 (02:14:46):
Notre Dame could be an interesting one at USC.
Speaker 2 (02:14:51):
You know, speaking of Notre Dame, and we were talking
about this college football playoff for a while. You know
in the US that Notre Dame, even if they go undefeated,
would never be able to have a buy in the
affiliating with one of the conferences.
Speaker 7 (02:15:05):
Oh yeah, I mean maybe that was kind of the
enticement right there of Oh, you guys want to continue
to do this with NBC and independence and all of
that and somewhat be in the ACC, but not really
be in the ACC.
Speaker 6 (02:15:18):
All right, we'll show you.
Speaker 2 (02:15:20):
Yeah, because I and I don't know if Notre Dame
will ever get to that spot. But I mean, clearly
Notre Dame has been a program in the last I
don't know, fifty years. It is always on the cusp
of winning a potential national.
Speaker 7 (02:15:30):
I'll look this up during the break, but I actually
I'm going to push back on that. I want to
say that Notre Dame, if they were in position, I
think they would count them as the ACC. I want
to say that I heard that I could be wrong.
Speaker 3 (02:15:42):
Well, Gordy told me to the otherwise, so uh.
Speaker 7 (02:15:44):
Well, then I would trust Gordy on that because he's following. No, no, no,
I'm not saying that, like you know, like I'm being
defensive about this, but like Gordy's following it a lot
closer than I did when I was in my previous stop.
Speaker 3 (02:15:56):
Because here's the thing.
Speaker 5 (02:15:57):
You have.
Speaker 2 (02:15:58):
The top four spots are supposed to be for conference champions,
that is, the four highest ranked conference champions.
Speaker 3 (02:16:08):
Well, East Notre Dame is not in.
Speaker 2 (02:16:09):
A conference, so how could how could they jump over
a team like the I guess they.
Speaker 3 (02:16:16):
They have no affiliation in football.
Speaker 2 (02:16:18):
I mean, they have affiliation with everything else in the ECS,
but they have no affiliation except they have to play
four opponents in the ECC.
Speaker 3 (02:16:24):
That's all they have to do.
Speaker 7 (02:16:25):
And by the way, I stand corrected in terms of
you and Gordy being correct, Yahoo Sports Independence like Notre
Dame are not eligible to receive a top four seed.
Speaker 2 (02:16:36):
Or by now they could be a five seed and
have a home field in that game, right, they have
to play an extra game?
Speaker 6 (02:16:42):
Right, which, by the way, how long is that farest
going to last for?
Speaker 3 (02:16:46):
I think they're going to go sixteen teams.
Speaker 7 (02:16:47):
Well, it's not that they're going to go sixteen teams. Eventually,
it's going to be Hey, Las Vegas wants to host
one of these opening round games. Hey dude, yes, like
and then people of course will lament, Oh, you're taking
away the sanctity of the game. Who cares? You're still
going to watch?
Speaker 2 (02:17:04):
No, I don't think it's a question of I don't
think I think it's a question of how much money
is there to spend and I and my argument is yes,
if you're a die hard fan of these teams, you're going.
Speaker 3 (02:17:16):
You just are.
Speaker 7 (02:17:17):
Well, it's also I mean, like you know, I was
talking about this with somebody the other day, like the people, Oh,
these playoff games should be played on Saturday. It's a
Saturday game. Who cares if it's a Monday night, you're
watching the game? Stop?
Speaker 3 (02:17:29):
Who who would argue with you about the day of
the week.
Speaker 6 (02:17:32):
Apparently?
Speaker 5 (02:17:33):
JD.
Speaker 7 (02:17:33):
Pikel of ON three is a huge proponent. A guy
that does an online show for ON three.
Speaker 3 (02:17:40):
I don't know who that is.
Speaker 2 (02:17:41):
And well, would you care if it was a Wednesday
at four o'clock in the afternoon, millions of people would watch.
Speaker 7 (02:17:45):
Well, it's the same people who lament about who are
going to do the same thing. Oh, well, those opening
games should be played on a college campus. Well, you
know what, it's going to be just fine being played
at Allegiance Stadium.
Speaker 3 (02:17:56):
No, my guess is you're probably right. They will.
Speaker 2 (02:17:59):
Probably we will step in and make all these neutral
site games.
Speaker 3 (02:18:03):
Yeah, they can attract thousands of people.
Speaker 7 (02:18:05):
Yes, it's going to become a paired down version of
the n C DOUBLEA tournament where the NC Double A
Tournament puts it up for bid and Boise will try
to get a host, Houston will try to get a host,
either at Toyota Center or if you want to do
the riser raised stage court there on a football field
(02:18:25):
for a Sweet sixteen and Elite eight.
Speaker 3 (02:18:27):
Go ahead, Yeah, do that.
Speaker 6 (02:18:28):
They've done it tons of times.
Speaker 3 (02:18:30):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:18:30):
I the home field first round is intriguing to me,
but I don't know if.
Speaker 3 (02:18:38):
It's gonna last long term.
Speaker 7 (02:18:39):
And here's another reason why it's only going to be
such a novelty is watch one of these games at
Ohio State, Penn State. If they ever play like at
Michigan or any of these other places and they have
like a deluge blizzard come through and you might not
be able to play the game that night, that's when
they'll be like what are we doing? Like, why aren't
we playing these games in Tampa? When when Nashville builds
(02:19:01):
their brand new indoor stadium, why aren't we playing this
game in Nashville.
Speaker 6 (02:19:05):
Yep, that's when that's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (02:19:07):
They're not gonna want schedule quirks.
Speaker 2 (02:19:10):
They're not gonna want to say, hey, Florida State has
to go to play at oh, I don't know, Boston
College in a playoff game and it's thirty, it's it's
snowing in fifteen. Great, the NFL doesn't mind the elements.
I think college football would probably have a bigger problem
with them.
Speaker 6 (02:19:29):
Because the NFL doesn't have to mind it.
Speaker 7 (02:19:30):
They know that you're going to watch no matter where
it's at and how it's being played regardless.
Speaker 2 (02:19:34):
So college fell actually frankly encourages the bad weather because
they put the they put the Green Bay games, they
put the New England games, they put the games in
cold weather cities at the nighttime where it's going to
be colder, in a chance of precipitation and other sort
of you know, wind and rain in that company.
Speaker 7 (02:19:47):
I mean, because that's the thing with college is, I mean,
college is very much a niche viewership.
Speaker 6 (02:19:52):
It's huge here in this part of the country.
Speaker 7 (02:19:54):
Well, it's it's really huge in the southeast, parts of
the Midwest, the west coast. They could caro lot us
up in the northeast East, couldn't cary.
Speaker 6 (02:20:03):
They could care even less than less.
Speaker 2 (02:20:05):
Yep, all right, seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
nine zero. Willie Fritz is going to join us at
the bottom of the hour. You may join us if
you'd like to at seven one three two one two
five seven ninety Let me ask you this and I
and we'll do more of this tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (02:20:23):
Are there any aggies and.
Speaker 2 (02:20:25):
Longhorns listening to me right now that are trying to
get tickets that they're just running into. This is insanely
expensive and I just can't do it. Or are you
saying this has not happened in over a decade. I
gotta be there for it, because the prices I'm seeing
(02:20:46):
for these tickets, and we'll talk about this coming back,
are incredible.
Speaker 3 (02:20:49):
The part of the hotel cost.
Speaker 2 (02:20:52):
Just getting in and around Kyle Field might be one
of the biggest.
Speaker 3 (02:20:55):
I mean, if you thought George Strait.
Speaker 2 (02:20:57):
Concert was an ordeal getting in and around Kyle Field, imagine.
Speaker 3 (02:21:00):
But that's going to be like this Saturday. So if
you're one.
Speaker 2 (02:21:02):
Of the fan bases of one of those two teams,
how's your search going for tickets?
Speaker 3 (02:21:07):
Do you already have them? Are you willing to sell them?
I'm not trying me a ticket broker here.
Speaker 2 (02:21:11):
I'm just curious where you are on this or you've
got to be in that stadium, no matter what the
case may be.
Speaker 6 (02:21:17):
And no, me and Matt cannot get you tickets.
Speaker 3 (02:21:20):
No, I have no connections, No none.
Speaker 2 (02:21:23):
I mean my family's going and that's that's that's a
non starter.
Speaker 6 (02:21:27):
Don't you always love those dms? Hey, I know he
hadn't talked in a while, and we'll continue that way.
Speaker 3 (02:21:33):
So you want you know, you will not respond to
people dming.
Speaker 7 (02:21:35):
You, dude, it's the most annoying. I mean even people, Hey,
I see you're on the field. Could you ever get
my son on?
Speaker 1 (02:21:41):
No?
Speaker 7 (02:21:41):
I cannot get your son on the field. They don't
even want me on the field.
Speaker 3 (02:21:44):
Yeah, they don't want you there, Dan, They've met you.
They don't want you there.

Speaker 6 (02:23:29):
Sit down.
Speaker 2 (02:23:34):
On Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two, one
two five seven ninety So, uh, have you looked at
the stub hubs that kind of stuff, to see where
tickets are going for these but these bad boys. Apparently
it's the highest regular season ticket dollar that you're gonna
want to buy for a college football game, maybe ever
in the history of college football, at least for a
(02:23:56):
regular choosing game.
Speaker 7 (02:23:57):
Yeah, a website, And I will say this as clearly
as I can so I avoid any confusion.
Speaker 6 (02:24:04):
Tick Pick is the name of me.
Speaker 7 (02:24:07):
The name of it is tick like as in tickets
and pick like you picked something.
Speaker 3 (02:24:12):
Okay, I thought you said something else.
Speaker 7 (02:24:14):
No, no, I properly enunciated and made sure that there
was no blurred lines there. The current get in is average,
of course, seven hundred and forty one dollars. The average
purchase price is just over one thousand, one seventy nine
and this was as of yesterday.
Speaker 2 (02:24:39):
I mean, I've I don't know how much extra. I mean,
the most extravagant spending I've ever done for sports. Now,
I did go to the Final Four to see the
Cougars play Baylor, and I did that in a moment's notice,
but I use like every flick frequent flyer mile I had,
and then I bought a one way ticket on the
way back.
Speaker 3 (02:25:01):
That was about six hundred bucks.
Speaker 2 (02:25:04):
Now, you don't have to do that if you're going
to the game, because I'm presuming that ninety percent of
the people that are coming to this game are within
driving distance of College station.
Speaker 3 (02:25:12):
Sure, but man, are these kids? Are these season ticket
holders selling them?
Speaker 5 (02:25:19):
Are they?
Speaker 3 (02:25:19):
I mean, who is that?
Speaker 2 (02:25:22):
What's the demographic? Who is that person that says Texas
and A.
Speaker 3 (02:25:26):
And m are finally playing each other.
Speaker 2 (02:25:29):
It's been so long we've missed his rivalry, and let's
go try to sell these tickets.
Speaker 7 (02:25:34):
Not a ton at least. A really good buddy of
mine is an Aggie season ticket holder. He went to
A and M and he no matter us on our
group text trying to tell him, like, dude, you could
pay for your season tickets. You could go on vacation
with this money, like watching on TV. He was like, no,
absolutely not. He's like, I have to be here. And
(02:25:55):
by the way, too, the same website that I mean,
I've given the name out. We don't have to read
say it against I'm afraid you're gonna no, no, I'm
highly concentrated on it. This is the highest average price
in years for a game. The second highest was nine
hundred and twelve dollars for Bucks at the Patriots in
(02:26:15):
twenty twenty one, and of course that was the return
of Tom Brady. Ohio State at Michigan last year was
seven sixty three, seven sixty two for Georgia at Texas
this year, and Ohio State at Notre Dame last year
in South Bend was seven fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (02:26:33):
Yeah, I don't, I don't I don't honestly see this
going down at all. I think, frankly, when you get
closer to kickoff, they're probably gonna get more expensive. When
you think the key is you waited the very last second.
They say, well, you can get a deal. But once
you get if you were to get within a mile
of Kyle Field and people are tailgating and having a
(02:26:53):
good time and there's blank talking between the two schools,
it's gonna want it. It's gonna want you to be
in that facility even more than you would be if
you were just on the outside looking in, right see.
Speaker 7 (02:27:03):
And that's the thing is advantage ticket holder at that point,
because maybe you do go there and you say, you know, look,
I'm perfectly fine if I don't get my price going
to the game. But if I do, I mean bar
tab for everybody. We'll go to Northgate, We'll watch this
game and wait. Of course, hopefully if if we win,
we being a and M, then you could be able
(02:27:26):
to have even more of a fun time on Northgate
with other aggis, trash talking Texas fans that walk by,
and you getting slashed on free money.
Speaker 2 (02:27:35):
Basically, yeah, again, it's everybody's gonna have different agendas on it,
whether you bought the tickets to go to the game
because you wanted to be there for it, or you say,
you know what, we're now in the same conference, We're
going to see each other again in a couple of years.
The game is gonna be an Austin next year.
Speaker 3 (02:27:51):
It may not.
Speaker 2 (02:27:53):
Yeah, it's it's hard to pinpoint how exactly the importance
for every single.
Speaker 3 (02:27:56):
Individual fan is. Well, I can just tell you this.
Speaker 2 (02:27:59):
My son, my middle one, is a senior, and this
will be his only opportunity to see these two teams
play as a student. Now, he can obviously go back
as an alum, but I think there's something special about
being in the student section. So there's no way, know how,
no chance he's selling his ticket.
Speaker 7 (02:28:15):
Well, and that's the thing too, is I mean, of course,
what I'm saying in certain fronts is a statement of
privilege because of what we do and like the ways
that we can get tickets now, Like, honestly, a lot
of times I won't go to a game unless it's
a premium seat because I'm like, why do I want
the traffic, why do I want just everything that goes
(02:28:36):
with it? Just to sit in just a regular seat.
I can just watch it at home and be perfectly
fine with it. I mean I used to be about, oh,
I've got to be there, the atmosphere, all those different things,
but like especially college football games where especially in the SEC,
just how hard it is to get in and out
of these towns.
Speaker 6 (02:28:54):
It's an all day deal.
Speaker 7 (02:28:55):
Like, if you're going to this game on Saturday, you
would be best suit to leave your house in the
morning and expect that you're going to be getting home
well after midnight.
Speaker 3 (02:29:04):
Yeah, well I'm yeah, we're there, spend the night at
the apartment.
Speaker 2 (02:29:07):
So yeah, there's no chance anybody from my family is
coming home that Sunday morning because it's gonna take hours
to get out of kle feel much less trying to
get home to Houston in a decent hour.
Speaker 7 (02:29:17):
That was the beauty for me and Gordy. Once Lsu
started to get blown out that we were like, let's
just go, And the most traffic we had on the
way home was stopping at the place that's got the
beaver on it.
Speaker 3 (02:29:30):
M hmm.
Speaker 5 (02:29:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:29:32):
Legend to mention because theyn't spend money, they don't need to.
Speaker 7 (02:29:34):
But you know it's gonna say if they want to.
They're more than welcome. I will i'd welcome. I will
pump the hell out of some beef jerky and some
brisket sandwiches and clean restrooms, all of that.
Speaker 6 (02:29:44):
Absolutely yeah, But until then, no, they get nothing like it.
Speaker 2 (02:29:48):
All right, one twenty eight, Let's talk to head football
coach Willie Fritz and he'll join us next year. There
has been a coaching change and we'll hear from him
on that when we return. One twenty eight words talk
seven Unty with a message right now for Game Day
Men's Health. I want you to think about how you're feeling.
If you're sluggish, if you're not feeling your best, if
(02:30:10):
you have lozzi libido, if you are in a situation
where you're not able to work out, or your sleeping
habits are terrible, and you want to feel more confident
and increase the energy. Maybe it's about getting your testosterone
levels adjusted if they're too low. Let the folks at
Game Day Men's Health fix you up. Game Daymenshealth dot
com slash Houston locations all throughout the Houston area. They

different locations, and right now there are six that are
opened right now for the Houston audience, two more next month,
and then another five more opening up in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (02:30:51):
If you want.
Speaker 2 (02:30:52):
To feel your better, better about yourself, maybe it's just
testosterone treatments are something that's got to be a part
of your life. If you book an appointment for TRT,
you can get a free vitamin shot to even help.
Speaker 3 (02:31:03):

Speaker 3 (02:31:14):

Speaker 2 (02:31:22):
It is the Matt Thomas Show here from Minneapolis Rockets
and the Wolves coming up later tonight tomorrow in Philadelphia.
And this weekend I'll be a join of the Cougars
in Provo, Utah for U of H versus b YU.
It'll be the final game of the twenty twenty four
season for coach Willie Fritz. And he has brought to
you today as he is every week, by the Joint
(02:31:43):
Chiropractor the official chiropractor of the Houston Cougars coach. Needless
to say, probably a tough day for you with the
decision to make a move with your offensive coordinators. Spot
take us through what it's been like the last couple
of days and the decision ultimately to make a change
for this week's game.
Speaker 8 (02:32:00):
Well, Kevin's a bar Bay is a fantastic person, and
we just, you know, just didn't have the success we
wanted to have this year offensively. And you know, I
tried to wait as long as I can, and I
was just hoping that we could you have some success,
and just was tough. And you know, when it you know,
(02:32:20):
it's coaching, it's playing, it's everything execution, and uh, you know,
and but I wanted to get out in front of
this a little bit earlier. There's a cycle involved with
hiring coaches, and it's kind of right now, so I just, uh,
I needed to do it now, and uh talked to
the team early this morning and and uh then released
(02:32:43):
a little statement and and uh, you know, Sean Bell
is going to be our interim offensive coordinator, and you know,
had a good lively practice this morning, and you know,
we want to go up and play great and uh
provo Saturday nights. So but unfortunately, as part of the
job that you got to got to do from time
to time.
Speaker 2 (02:33:03):
It is a tough from a timing standpoint because obviously
you want to find the next list of candidates. You
almost feel like listening to what you're telling us is
that you kind of had to do it now just
so you can get out in front of it.
Speaker 3 (02:33:16):
Is that is that fair to say?
Speaker 5 (02:33:18):
Yeah, a little bit.
Speaker 8 (02:33:18):
You know, it's uh, you know, you just hadn't had
had had much success here, particularly recently offensively, and you know,
and you wanted to you know, I had all sorts
of I came back in from practice and had about
thirty text messages and you know, so you know, now
that people know it's open, you see who's out there
(02:33:39):
and who's available. You know, I told our kids, Hey,
we're gonna have a nationwide search. We're going to find
the very best person to help put us in position
to be big Big twelve champions. And uh, you know
that's what I got to do as head coach, and
I got to find the right guy. And the more
time you have, obviously, the easier that is for you.
Speaker 2 (02:34:01):
Obviously, coach when you look down the road for the future,
and that's what we're looking forward to. Obviously seeing what
you do and who you make on the higher it
has to be about the coach that fits the players
and vice versa. So, if I gave you a dream scenario,
obviously you want a team that scores a lot and
gets in the end zone a bunch and is exciting.
But what kind of things characteristics do you want from
(02:34:22):
a guy that's going to ultimately be your play caller.
Speaker 8 (02:34:25):
Well, number one, you want a good person. You know,
it's very important to me. Guys going to be a
good role model mentor to our student athletes. I want
a guy that can play complimentary football. You know, sometimes
you get offenses coordinators and just trying to score as many
points they can and don't worry about field position or
turnovers or you know, kind of possession and ends up
(02:34:46):
hurting your your defense and your kicking game and then
play field position or score the game, all those different
kinds of things.
Speaker 5 (02:34:55):
So and I do believe we want to be a.
Speaker 8 (02:34:57):
Fifty to fifty team. You know, don't want to be
able to you know, run the ball for seventy play game.
You know, thirty five times run and thirty five times pass.
Speaker 10 (02:35:06):
And.
Speaker 8 (02:35:08):
You know, we weren't able to get to that point
and uh, and then we got to go out and
do a great job recruit. That's another part of it
with getting the guy in here is don't you know
helping uh, you know, to see what he you know,
needs and looks for and you know, different position groups
and uh, we've got some good guys coming back offensively,
(02:35:31):
but we've got some positions that we need. We need
some help and be able to play like with the
same kind of guys everybody else is playing with in
the Big Twelve, So that it's going to be important
for us to get a guy in here. And you
not help us with the freshman class. We've already got
that figured out, and help us with the guys in
any additions that we might make from the portal.
Speaker 2 (02:35:54):
Let's start thinking about this BYU team. They're frankly shell
shock the way they performed themselves the last couple of weeks.
They still have a chance at this Big twelve championship.
I think a lot of things have to obviously line up,
But tech me through what you've seen so far from
them this year and I'm not saying anything's vulnerable, because
(02:36:14):
obviously they're in a bad mood, but they have been
a doc football team.
Speaker 3 (02:36:17):
The last two weeks.
Speaker 5 (02:36:19):
Well, they've had a great year.
Speaker 8 (02:36:20):
Other than the last couple of weeks, haven't had the
outcome they wanted, almost did last week, but you know,
it's a team that was projected pretty low in the
Big twelve prior to the season and has done a
great job. I think won their first nine ball games.
You know, offensively, what you think. You know, big offensive line,
(02:36:44):
you know, they're they're gonna be the most mature team
would play. I think they average twenty three, twenty four
years of age, someplace in that vicinity. Were excellent quarterback,
you know, big tall receivers, been strong running game. Defensively,
you know, play a lot of man coverage, which is
(02:37:05):
you know, I don't know if they've always done that
or not, but they're playing a bunch of man coverage
this year and just really well coached club. I got
a lot of respect for their head coach. He does
it the right way and they play extremely hard.
Speaker 5 (02:37:18):
So we're gonna have to come in there and in a.
Speaker 8 (02:37:21):
Hostile environment and playing in the evening and you know,
playing on national TV, and we're.
Speaker 5 (02:37:28):
Gonna have to play great.
Speaker 10 (02:37:28):
We know that.
Speaker 8 (02:37:29):
I've said that every week, you know, in order for
us to have a success we want to have, we've
got to play well in all three phases, and we're
certainly gonna have to do that on Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (02:37:39):
All Right. We have had our share of games that
are temperatures in the mid nineties. This week's game could
be a temperature is in the twenties twenty five thirty
degree range. Your equipment to staff probably gonna have to
put some extra time in this week loading up the plane.
Speaker 5 (02:37:54):
Yeah, they're gonna have to do that.
Speaker 8 (02:37:56):
It's uh, you know, I think it would be fun.
He'll kind of kind of challenge everybody. I'm playing a
bunch of cold games, but may not have as many guys.
Speaker 5 (02:38:04):
That have done that before.
Speaker 8 (02:38:05):
So we'll, you know, get get out there, and once
you get out there playing and coaching, you know, you
really don't notice it much. So that'll be a great
challenge for us.
Speaker 5 (02:38:18):
We're looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (02:38:21):
Last question for you, coach, Let's do this a season
recap here and obviously still one Lenk game left to go.
Give me the high water mark of the year, and
then take us through what your next few weeks will
be beyond the fact of recruiting and obviously trying to
fill a coaching position. What other forms of evaluation will
you be doing once the dust settles of this season
(02:38:42):
is over.
Speaker 8 (02:38:44):
Well, you know, you hit all the two main ones,
you know, hiring offensive coordinator and then also you know,
I'm sure there'll be some guys that will add to
a roster via the portal. We've got National signing Day
a week from tomorrowmorrow, i think December fourth, Uh, for
high school guys, We're gonna sign a great high school class.
Speaker 5 (02:39:05):
We're really excited about that. And uh, you know that
will be and then we'll have a recap.
Speaker 8 (02:39:11):
You know, we'll visit with all our players and uh,
you know, talk to them about things they did well,
things they need to prove on all, visit with all
the coaches, also give my observations and you know, sum
up the season. So there's a lot of stuff to do.
And then you know, take a little bit of time
off at the end of December and uh, you know,
(02:39:33):
jump back into and the kids returning January.
Speaker 2 (02:39:36):
And I'm assuming getting ready to move in that football
facility and I'll do this in future too.
Speaker 3 (02:39:39):
Correct ad July.
Speaker 5 (02:39:41):
We should be getting in there.
Speaker 10 (02:39:42):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (02:39:43):
I took a walk through on it a couple of
weeks ago and it's going to be spectacular. We'll have
facilities on par with anybody in the state of Texas.
So that is another added bonus to to being here
at the University of Houston.
Speaker 3 (02:39:58):
Coach, we appreciate our weekly visits. I know the better
times are ahead.
Speaker 2 (02:40:02):
Thanks again for your honest assessment of what's going on,
and we look forward to surprises and folks in Provo
this weekend and we will see you in Happy Thanksgiving
to you and the family.
Speaker 3 (02:40:11):
Do Sandy all Gokus, Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (02:40:14):
Willie Fritz joining us here on Sports Talk seven HONI again.
A decision made by coach to relieve offensive coordinator Kevin
Barbae of his duties. Sean Bell will be the Who's
the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator will be calling
plays This week one forty two is our time time
for us to play.
Speaker 3 (02:40:32):
Believe it or not, it's all things about Mac Brown.
Speaker 2 (02:40:34):
Speaking of coaching changes, he is going to coach one
more game at North Carolina and how well, do you
know Mac Brown chance will win some nice prizes coming
up on that straight ahead one forty three Sports Talk seven, Honie,
Matt Thomas, you'll continues here from Minneapolis in a moment
here on seven ninety.
Speaker 16 (02:40:51):
Hey, it's Jeff Blum. Blum fact number fourteen. I was
on the White Sox in two thousand and five. Yeah,
sorry about that sweep h town, but we're all good
right now. Right back to your lunchtime champion, Matt Thomas.
Speaker 2 (02:41:11):
What forty seven Matt Thomas show here for Minneapolis. Dan
is back with us for the final segment, Rockets and Wolves.
Speaker 3 (02:41:20):
Do you have the launch pat at six o'clock tonight?
Speaker 7 (02:41:22):
That's correct, launch pad six o'clock. Rockets Rap afterwards, And
even though I made the gut feeling, I would hope
that it's a Rockets win to be able to talk
about on Rockets RAP.
Speaker 3 (02:41:34):
It'd be nice. It'd be nice if they lose and
not the end of the world.
Speaker 2 (02:41:38):
Although I kind of you know what I'm I'm I'm.
Speaker 3 (02:41:41):
You know me.
Speaker 2 (02:41:42):
I'm always carp before horse guy. I like this top
three seeding the Rockets have in the Western Conference. Forget
about the endplay. I mean this is thinking about playoffs
after all these years, of all these losses.
Speaker 3 (02:41:53):
I'm all for it.
Speaker 7 (02:41:54):
Well, it's also too I mean, it's kind of a
character test for you. I mean, can you beat these
teams if you do face them in the playoffs? And
I mean we found out earlier in the year when
they played against Oklahoma You're not Oklahoma City. You're not
as good as them right now, Maybe you will be
as good as them when you play them in December, March,
or even April.
Speaker 2 (02:42:15):
Yeah, I really hope they can pull this off. ID
be fun for them, a nice little reward. And again
I know that I think generally speaking, most and most
sports fans don't really care that a whole much about
the n season tournament. But it's adding a little bit
of an extra layer. I wouldn't say it's necessarily gonna
dominate this part of the sports year. We've got so
(02:42:36):
lots of football going on, both college and pro. But
if if you're a basketball fan, and that definitely gives
you a little more of an interest in maybe it
would have if it was just a regular Monday and
Tuesday basketball game, to be honest with you.
Speaker 7 (02:42:47):
Well, and two, I mean Steven Adams is out tonight,
so we're not going to see him and Rudy gober
get into it. But maybe Dylan and Rudy goberget into
it at some point tonight, maybe a tie up for
a loose ball or or something like that.
Speaker 3 (02:43:03):
Dylan doesn't care who he goes up against. He youn't
fight anybody.
Speaker 6 (02:43:06):
That's true. He's he does not duck smoke.
Speaker 2 (02:43:11):
No, by the way, did you say that Joel Embiid's
not playing tomorrow?
Speaker 6 (02:43:16):
Did not?
Speaker 2 (02:43:17):
But Paul George's not playing tomorrow, and there's somebody else
with the Sixers. I think it's not playing tomorrow too.
Speaker 3 (02:43:23):
Kyle Lowry. Kyle Lowry is out tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (02:43:27):
Sorry, Darryl.
Speaker 2 (02:43:30):
Yeah, they have been a major, major disappointment. I mean,
shell shocked how bad they've been this year.
Speaker 7 (02:43:38):
It's just seemingly it's like they've just continuously tried. And look,
I know that I say that it sounds like I'm
taking a shot at at Darryl.
Speaker 6 (02:43:45):
I'm not.
Speaker 7 (02:43:45):
We love Darryl Moury around here, but I mean it's
not for a lack of trying, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:43:51):
Yeah, they're three and thirteen. They have the second worst
record in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 6 (02:43:55):
Does he start flipping players too soon?
Speaker 2 (02:44:00):
They're only three out of the ten spot. But man,
they are ten games under five hundred and there's only
sixteen games so far in this season. I mean that
is saying something.
Speaker 7 (02:44:10):
I mean, we've seen that if he doesn't believe they
have a chance to go for a championship, he'll do it.
I mean, I remember that press conference when they traded
away Shane Battier and I can't remember who else, and
he said, look, we're not a championship basketball team.
Speaker 3 (02:44:22):
Just what it is in a trade? I mean, you know,
I mean, what do you have the trade that you'd
be willing to give up.
Speaker 7 (02:44:28):
You're talking about for the Rockets, willing to give up Philadelphia? Oh,
I mean, I would think that somebody would be fine
taking Joel Embiid.
Speaker 3 (02:44:37):
That much money and that much injury.
Speaker 7 (02:44:39):
I mean, I get that parameters of it, but it's
also too I mean, I think that this the NBA
does not have enough stars. It's a start efficient league.
And if there is a team out there that has
enough of the assets to be able to give up
and a guy that could help give them a boost
at the at the box office, for sure.
Speaker 3 (02:44:58):
Yeah, I don't see him being traded. I think it's
too much money.
Speaker 2 (02:45:02):
I mean, Kelly Ubray would be a guy that could
possibly trade, maybe Tyrese Maxey, but I don't know good players.
Speaker 7 (02:45:08):
But that's not necessarily doing anything for me in terms
of hey, come watch us play.
Speaker 3 (02:45:13):
Yeah, five minutes left to go on the show. What
should we do.
Speaker 2 (02:45:17):
That we should play America's fastest growing sports radio game show.
Speaker 3 (02:45:23):
