Speaker 1 (00:01):
Yeah, lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas Show ten oh
one in ahe town.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Good morning, everybody, and welcome to a Thursday edition of
the Matt Thomas Showing. Ross. This is Sports Talk seven
ninety and then the ball pumped away by Green give
it to the shinggun. No look pass for a damp
the two reason excellent pop movement off the steel Rocket's
up by eight at thirty two twenty four.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
The wrestling down hard light with the right hand man.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Rocket's up by ten thirty four twenty four. The roost
love baseline right. Jabari slides to his left, doesn't take
the three brooks inside. Tari goes up, hands it off
to a man jumped it down. The extra pass worked
and the Rockets are within one for Jenskey to hand
bout three and a half to go. All eyes on Curry,

(01:01):
Zemski looks, looks, gives it up to Curry, Potchensky side
pocket his rock yea and the Rockets what not. The
Rockets are going to Vegas and the street is over.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Bred Pajensky the shot was blocked. The Rockets word, Oh
my goodness, what a cutback.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
The final seven points of the game belong with the
Houston Rockets. Huge block shot Tarry easton back corner to
preserve a victory, and Steve Curry's is so sad. I
will not weep for you, Steve Kurk. That's right. And

(02:00):
the Rockets are on to the Western Conference semifinals. Oh wait,
that's the NBA Finals. We're trying to sell that we
could do the most important series in the history of
the Rockets, one in the last five years. It feels good,
felt good energy in the Toyota Center, Warriors on the

(02:20):
floor against the crowd, crowd, engaged crowd, engaged crowd, the crowd,
and as you mentioned last night, as I was listening
to the Rockets postgame show, you didn't need the scoreboard
or the Jonathan Sanford to kind of get you guys round. Yeah,
it was nice. I was on the post game till

(02:41):
twelve of forty good. So you may have the most
calls you had in like two months combined after last Honestly,
I might have got as many calls last night as
I've gotten all year. It's close. It's closer than you
should be. That's crazy, all right. We have a lot
to get to. We have a super busy show today. Okay,
we've got football, you've got baseball, We've got basketball. We

(03:03):
have I just don't get it. We've got which I
don't get. I wanna get to Steve Kurne a little bit here.
I get it. I got our TNT people that are
not particularly enthralled with how the Rockets won that game
last night. We'll get to a little bit of that
we have. We're gonna check it in Miami. What's going
on with the Dolphins? Letters today on the radio program.
We also have Rotten five. We've got Believe it or

(03:24):
Not today, which I'm going to handle. What you what
are you weeping for? We're down to a few weeks
left nothing. I'm that week you were weeping. I'm good.
It's great, I know, I know. All right, So we
got a super busy show. Would you like to join us?
We would love to have you at seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety as the Rockets will advance

(03:47):
to the semifinals of the NBA Cup, where they are
two victories away from five hundred thousand dollars. What do
you get, Matt, I believe a firm Handscheck. I'm matter boy.
We were kind of teasing. I was talking with some
Golden State Warrior PR officials and it's like so and
Craig was it was with me too. He says, if Mad,

(04:10):
if you go, you're gonna want up losing money in
the trip. I'm like, give me a chance. That's what
I've been saying. I know everyone's like, Matt, you may
not want to go. You may. You know, Dallas in
mid December is a lovely time of year. Yeah, Dallas
is gonna save you money. It was gonna save you money.
But that's okay. It'll be fun to get there. I
don't I don't know what to expect. Frankly, television ratings

(04:31):
for the NBA this year have not been good. I
don't know if this is gonna pump it up. I
would be brutally honest and saying that I don't know
if Oklahoma City, Houston, Atlanta and whom Milwaukee are going
to move the needle when it comes to a Rando
Tuesday night. But there's only gonna be two games on
in college in the NBA on Saturday and one on Tuesdays.
So you're an opportunity to kind of brag about this.

(04:51):
And again not that the NBA average fan gets ahold
of the money, but there was an energy in the
building last night that would have I don't know if
there if it was just a regular old game, because
it was a fifteen game losing streak. The rockets snapped, yes,
so I think we would have been energized for but
it wouldn't have been to the level of what we
had last time. I think it was a combination of everything.
Warriors in town late start, the crowd was fifty two

(05:15):
tip times, the crowd was as full as I can
remember for the for the national anthem, and then it
was the NBA Cup against the Warriors, and that floor
blood red. Right as Steve Kerr said he felt like
he was descending into hell. I mean, I'll agree with
him on that one thing. It's it's an intense floor.
I got used to it, though for me my first

(05:37):
time seeing it in person. For me calling it was
no big deal. Okay, it doesn't do anything for me.
The crazy ass uniforms some of these NBA teams were
you can't see the numbers that that's more offensive than
the floors. All right, So let me preface this. There
are some members of the seven Hunty Air staff. I mean,
I love everybody, but some are a little more opinion

(05:59):
on officiating than perhaps I am. Okay, and I will
say this, officials have a difficult job no matter what
the sport is. We want them to get better ROSSI yes,
but they're not. We're stagnant with progress. And the problem

(06:20):
that that I'm bothered with is that we are getting
more and more advanced technology in all these sports, and
yet we're not seeing an overall better refereed officiated product.
Maybe a little nuances here and there, foot in bounds, juggling,
whatever the case. The NBA we're talking about, well we're
talking about all sports, but especially in the NBA. It's

(06:43):
just it's not there's not enough instant replay. You've got
to you've got both teams holding onto calls the very
last second. In fact, Steve Curse even said that last
and he said, I got a hold on of my
my time out here or my challenge because if the
game was to go to overtime, I don't want to
have it. Then what's deep Kerr and then particularly Draymond
Green get away with in terms of now I wasn't

(07:06):
on the floor. I was in my broadcast deck up
on top of the lower level, but it felt like
to me there was severe verbal harassment by those two guys.
And it's been that way since their championship run. Yes,
and what they get away with that other teams don't

(07:26):
get away with is I have a problem with the
it's sneezier, okay, but yeah, it happened several times last night.
Draymond Green is like yelling at the officials in their faces,
and Steve Kerr too, and no technical foul, nothing, not one.
Then late in the game, I don't remember what it
was at one point, but it was definitely fourth quarter

(07:49):
shngoon shakes off Draymond Green, it gives them a party, pumps,
fake him out of his soul, and then he gets
by him. And the only thing that Draymond Green can
do is not grab one show or bring it down,
but brings down two. Correct. And Bill Kennedy, who was
the crew chief on the call last night, who I happened,
is one of my favorite referees, good person, I think
is good referee. They went looked at it and they

(08:12):
called it a normal basketball play. I have been watching
basketball since I was seven years old. I have called
nine years of NBA basketball play. I've called lots of
college that my friends, and that to U sports ivey
was not a basketball play. Last night it was not.
How in the world does Bill Kennedy and the replay

(08:32):
center possibly justify Draymond Green grabbing both shoulders, pulling him
down and allowing that to be nothing more than a
common foul. That to me, and again, I don't like
to spend any time on my NBA broadcast bitching about officiating,
because I hear when I when I get in the car,

(08:53):
when I go when I finished calling Rockets game down, listen,
I hear a lot of my fellow NBA broadcasters that
rossie bitch and endlessly moan about officiating. And I don't
want to be that guy. So last night, with that
scrum in the last few seconds where Jalen Green and

(09:13):
gets mixes it up with Kaminga and Bill Kennedy calls
the foul and granted it was very far away, he
was not. He was the furthest official away from the
call and called Kaminga for the foul that sent Jaalen
to the free throw linally to tie the game. But
to give the Rockets the lead. Steve Kerr goes out

(09:36):
in blast the officials, and I'm thinking, my guy, you
have gotten so many breaks, not only tonight but basically
your entire ten eleven year career as an NBA coach. Yes,
So I don't feel sorry about how the game ended.
I don't care if T and T thought was a
bad call. I don't care if the national writers called
a bad call. It was time to get even, and
the Rockets got even. Literally, dossier's have been made about

(09:59):
the calls that by Daryl Morey and who knows who
else about the calls that the Warriors have gotten. And
by the way, flagrant foul penalty one definition on the
NBA dot com unnecessary contact committed by a player against
an opponent. What about that seemed necessary? Now? Was it
a flagrant too unnecessary and excessive? No, but it was unnecessary.

(10:22):
So they were basically saying that, I don't know who
said it, but they were like, basically, the Draymond grabbed
him so he wouldn't take him down, which make meant
no sense at all. He if an offensive player beat you,
you either have somebody come help you out. Underneath the
basket or you just say, damn, I got beat offensively.
Did you know what that was? It was similar to
a takefoul, which which should be which is an extra penalty.

(10:45):
It was basically a take foul within the paint is
what happened, so there should have been a penalty. It
was excessive contact. It was not a basketball play. The
flip side is that Shingoon did sell it and did
go down rather easily. But I guess that's what they
are arguing what the referees would argue. All right, so
we'll get to all that. Steve Kerr will hear from him,

(11:08):
We'll hear from the TNT boys. We will hear from you.
At seven one three two one two five SEVENATI, we
have an NFL Texans injury report. Our favorite starting safety
has done for the year. We'll get to that on
the show. The Hot Stove ROSSI at the Winter Meetings.
I mean, it's a blazon, right, it's full gas, seems
like it. And how much longer is Kyle Tucker and

(11:29):
astro hmm, think about that. Brian mctagg, we'll talk, we'll talk.
We'll join us at one o'clock today. The Brian Mttackaber
and then when I filled in it for you while
you were gone, let's go. It was good. How was that?

Speaker 4 (11:41):
Jacks?

Speaker 2 (11:42):
A lot of George Straight and cougarstock. Hey, by the way,
the Cougar's got themselves a brand new quarterback. Yeah, as
predicted here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross seven
one three two one two five seven. Nini, you want
to tell you about the Shell Federal Credit Union. Would
you like to make no payments on an auto loan
until two thousand and two twenty five. It can happen for
you when you go to Shell FCU dot org and

(12:03):
get yourself an auto loan on a new vehicle, a
refinanced vehicle, or a pre owned vehicle, and interest rates
for thirty six months can be as low as three
point nine nine percent plus you get two fifteen cash back.
I mentioned the deferred payments, and you'll get some skip
of pays. I financed a vehicle through the SHELLFCU about
five or six years ago, and it was a great, great,

(12:24):
great experience. If the loado landers are not giving you
good rates, if your bank's not doing you much good,
then get with the Shell FSU and see if they
can give you a good low auto loan rate all
from the Shell Federal Credit Union to apply online. When
you get the process started, you go to shellfsu dot org.
That Shell lifsu dot org for the Shell Federal Credit Union.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Back to Matt Thomas and Ross viareal fine on Sports
Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Step back, straight out, three up back on miss rebound
loose mam bleed and Payton and the ball is still loose.
Scramp call of timeout, please the three seconds left. We
have a foul. First, a foul has been called. Oh
my goodness, great Kennedy is gonna call a foul. That's
penalty and that's a penalty. Wow, cominga with the chance

(13:17):
for the Rockets to tire take the lead. It's a
bonus situation. There was a mad scramble at the free
throw line, jumping the kaminga fouls. Jalen Green three point
five seconds left, ninety to eighty nine. Golden State bench
is desperately telling the crowd to quiet down because even

(13:39):
though they're excited, Jalen's got two big free throws here,
tie game ninety ninety for the lead, got it tyn out.
Golden State Rockets have scored the last seven points in

(14:00):
this game, and they would be the final seven points
scored in this game, and the Rockets advanced to the
NBA Cups Semi Finals, which will be in Vegas Saturday
night and Tuesday. If the Rockets are to beat a
ridiculously good Oklahoma City team seven one three two one

(14:23):
two five seven NINEY. If you want to jump in
on the conversation, seven one three two one two five
seven NINEY, We're gonna hear from Steve Kerr in a
matter of moments, and it's just rich. We'll just put
it that way. Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Let's start the conversation today with our buddy
David in Las Vegas. As soon as I get this

(14:45):
potted up properly. We talked to him on seven ninety
to ten twenty two. David, good morning, Yay.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
I promised I would call in be the first to
congratulate the Rockets and also to welcome you to my hometown.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
It is uh gonna be trip number I believe thirty
nine for me to Las Vegas. I mean, I got
a little bit of an issue, not a much of
an issue, but a little bit of one.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Well, I'm curious about I don't want to just sec
but I'm creous schedule. At one point, you're talking about
maybe yuh casting the show from warning from here were
you deserves?

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yeah, I want to let you go, David. There's a
bad connection for some reason. It's probably our fault because
it's our phone line suck. But uh, we are leaving today.
They will practice tomorrow place Saturday, and then uh, I'm
off Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday next week. So I don't really
know what happens. You are, yes, I am, and all
this time you take off? Oh really really? Okay, Okay

(15:48):
that seems fair. Sorry, go ahead, I lost it, Kay,
but yeah, I will be there tomorrow. It's gonna be
eight o'clock a m. But that's okay. I'm I ain't complaining.
How hard where was Adam Silver? And the network's rooting
for the Warriors and the Knicks? I mean, I gotta
be honest with you. I don't know if Atlanta Milwaukee

(16:09):
moves the Neil very much. But we were like, we
were trying to figure out that the Rockets are gonna
win the game, which game would be the afternoon game,
would be the night game? And then I knew when
Atlanta made that beat the Knicks last night in New York.
It was like one of this game plan at night.
I don't care who it is. Yes, seven point thirty
on ABC, the Houston Rockets, Mike Green, Bang, Oh okay,

(16:29):
I like that friend of the show. Mike Green, great
friend of the show, just a spectacular human being. Other
national guys not so much. Mike Green, Salt of the Earth. Yes,
so that'll be on Saturday night. But yeah, thank David
for the phone call. So we could not have a
more conjecture than that. But yeah, I don't I mean,
I don't even know how. I don't know if if
the ticket's already sold, I don't know if. I don't
know if Rocket fans are trying to get there. I mean,

(16:50):
if you're a Rocket fan and they're looking for a
quick roady, I bet you can get tickets. I can't
imagine it being a situation where they're gonna, you know,
that every seat is sold and everything is going to
be double the face value. Blah blah blah blah blah. Yeah,
the fights are a little pricey this weekend. Matt Well,
I don't think you can ever go anywhere on Monday's notice,
and it's cheap. So I guess you could leave Saturday
morning if you wanted to. That's still going to cost

(17:12):
you quite a bit, Yes, it is. Can't make it unfortunately. Yeah,
all right, So let's get to Steve Kerr. Steve Kerr,
Steve Kerr. Yes, let's get to Steve Kurr. My daughter,
by the way, is proud of me. Very few times
in my life. Mm hmm when her dad me makes
TikTok and goes viral like we did when I did
the Steve Kerr introduction, She's like, Dad, do you realize

(17:34):
how awesome that Wasn't like, you know, I've raised you,
I've put you through school, I've helped you try with
your development and trying to go play college. Food on
the table before the table, medical medical attention, you're the
nice clothes you like to wear. Dad, you want you got?
You got viral on tiktoko? Okay, okay, thanks, don I
appreciate that. So Steve Kerr had a few things to

(17:54):
say yesterday after that call was made by Bill Kennedy
and it was on the other side of the floor
when he made the and in his fairness, when you
have a scrum like that. You rarely, rossily ever see
a foul cult unless it's ridiculously over the top. And
I keep looking to see what Jonathan Kaminga did to
Jalen Green that would force him to that, and I

(18:15):
guess I'd have to look at the referee report and
then probably trying to find some zoom lens on it.
Did you see anything supera I mean, not super egregious,
but it looks like and I think probably from Bill
Kennedy's angle, it looked worse than it was. It looks
like Jalen Green gets hit in the head. It was
kinda and Fred actually takes somebody down a few seconds
before that. You could have called a foul on Fred

(18:37):
on that play beforehand. Yeah, but again, I'm not crying
for that. I'm not crying for of all the teams
in the NBA, I ain't crying for it's Steve freaking Kerr.
Here is coach Kerr after the game last night.

Speaker 6 (18:51):
I've never seen a loose ball foul on a jump
ball situation eighty feet from the basket with the game
on the line.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
I've never seen that.

Speaker 6 (19:00):
I think I saw in college one time thirty years ago.
Never seen it in the NBA. That is unconscionable. I
don't even understand what just happened. You know, loose ball
diving on the floor eighty feet from the basket, and
you're gonna give guy two free throws to decide the game.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
When people are scrambling for the.

Speaker 6 (19:22):
Balls, just give them a timeout, give them a timeout,
and let the players decide the game. That's how you officiate,
especially because the game was a complete wrestling match.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
I mean, he's got fair points, but I don't care.
You get away with murder. Your team constantly gets away
with calls. And you would think after all these years
that the NBA officials who are wise, that have gone
through training, that know every single step at every single
one of them a players does, would would would be

(20:04):
caught up to speed on that kind of stuff. But
yet they get away with so much. And like I said,
I mentioned this is the very top of the broadcast today.
I'm not a referee, basher. I don't want to do it.
I think it's a bad look for play by play
guys to do that. But I feel zero empathy for anything.
Steve Kerr said, now zero, Yeah, I mean looking at
the play again and again and again and again. Kaminga

(20:25):
is going for the ball and his ball, his hand
hits the ball, and then at that point his kind
of elbow I guess joint where it bends hits Jalen
Green on the shoulder. But he's making a play for
the ball. So at the proper angle, it's not really
a foul, but you can see how it looks like
a foul. So hey, that's maybe what how many something

(20:47):
that's not really a foul and looks like a foul
gets called fifty times every basketball And my guest is
probably Steve Kurr's biggest argument is the official that was
furthest away from the play was the one that made
the call. Yes, and that and the fact. And he
does have a good point in that it was a
physical game. A lot of stuff wasn't called both ways
that entire game, and they were letting them play. And
if you're gonna let them play, then you need to

(21:07):
let them play with five seconds to go. So yeah,
if we were doing Warrior to day area Warrior Dubs talk,
we're talking about how they got screwed, but you also
need to talk about how you didn't score in the
last three minutes. You got multiple twenty four second clock
violations and the Rockets defense stifled you all game. One
of the statisticians working the game last night sent me

(21:27):
this note. I want to say, somebody took a track
of how many and you could look it up yourself
if you wanted to. Let me look here and see
how many days they had. I think they had fifteen
teen term numbers in twenty two it is, I'm sorry,
twenty two shot clock violet six six of them defense
stood up now so good, they're so good. The national

(21:47):
folks aren't as big on the Rockets as perhaps we are.
And we'll hear why coming up in just a minute.
We'll talk to Ray in North Dakota in a minute
as well. Ray North Dakota said he's going to the
game in Vegas. How do you know that you call you? Yeah, oh, Broski, Yeah,
you have North of Cotta bros Yeah. I didn't realize
you had that. Nice for you. Seven one three two
one two five seven nine if you want to join
as seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.

(22:10):
Today is Thursday, right two for twos two for Thursday
on the Boneless Wings Executive Chicken Nuggets at any of
the thirteen Big City Wing locations, sauce and toss the
way that you want to. We got a Thursday night
football game tonight, we've got college basketball, You've got hockey. Uh,
you'll have NBA this weekend. If you want to go
check out the Rockets playing while you're watching professional football

(22:31):
and whatnot, you can do all that at Big City Wings.
But today is a special day for you. You buy
ten boneless Wings, you'll get ten free all not going
for dinner, maybe going for lunch, nine to ninety nine
lunch specials, entree side soft drink, ten bucks at any

(22:51):
season from Big City Wings, they'll throw in a bonus
five dollars. So twenty five gets you thirty from Big
City Wings and Big Citywings dot Com.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports
Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
You know they didn't call anything.

Speaker 6 (23:09):
Steph Curry got hit on the elbow playing his day
on a jump shot, just.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
Clubbed right on there.

Speaker 6 (23:15):
No call, So are you've established you're just not going
to call anything throughout the game.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
It's physical game.

Speaker 6 (23:21):
I'm going to call it a loose ball foul on
a jump ball situation with guys diving on the floor
with the game on the line. This is a billion
dollar industry, get people's jobs on the line. I am stunned.
I am stunned. I give the Rockets credit. They battled back,
They play great defense all night. But I feel for
our guys. Our guys battled back, played their asses on

(23:43):
it and deserve to win that game, or at least
have a chance for one stop at the end to
finish the game. And that was taken from us by
a call that I don't think an elementary school referee
would have made, because that guy would have had feel
and said, you know what, I'm not going to decide
a game on a loose ball eighty feet from the basket.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
I know we're one day late on this, but Steve
Kerr shit jo bumass up mate shifts to bum ass
up man. You're getting fine too. You call him elementary
school officials. Yeah, he may told him to get somefing glasses.
It's probably worse, but that's pretty bad too. And I

(24:27):
think multiple times he was it was a personal stab
at Bill Kennedy. I think in the first bite that
we played, he mentioned I haven't seen that since college.
He was kind of be like, yeah, yeah, Bill Kenny,
I haven't seen that eighty feet away. He mentioned, that's
mentioning Bill Kennedy. Without mentioning Bill Kennedy. I did watch
Bill Kennedy. He ran up the floor. It was a

(24:48):
significant The foul was called way far away without mentioning
him by name. He made it personal with Bill Kennedy
talking about how far away he was, talking about him
being and not seeing that since college, basically saying Bill Kennedy,
you're not worthy of being an NBA referee, and then
the elementary school thing, and then he went really full

(25:08):
bore with the elementary school thing. He those are all
personal shots at Bill Kennedy. He just he just made
it personal with Bill Kennedy to me, and maybe there
was a history between They're sure they're I mean, they've
crossed paths, oh, I think. I mean. My guess is
Bill Kennedy's done a lot of golden seg games over
the year. Exactly. You know, we haven't seen in a
long time, as Scott Foster, We're gonna we're gonna see two.

(25:28):
We're gonna have a puncher. Chance to see him in Vegas? Right,
I would hope not. Oh man, Now, now, referee conversations
come back in the play. We've had referee talking years. Ross.
Remember when the Rockets had played Golden State and Darryl
Morrigan be all pissed off about somebody and it would
write stories or have Peo stories or written for him.

(25:49):
And oh, this guy is you know, Tony Brothers is
here when you're when you're playing and you're like twelve
and fifty three, you don't care who the officials are. Like,
these are guys you've heard in the Gilie. You've never
heard it before. Greg Miller is a referee tonight. Who Yeah,
you're like the training ground. It's true. You're gonna get
more national TV games. Yes, better referees. Actually maybe not
better referees, but more recognizable referee so file referees. That's right,

(26:13):
welcome to the ref show. That's right. Let's go to uh,
I'm gonna guess let's go to Fargo, North Dakota. Ray
on seven ninety Hi, Ray, going.

Speaker 7 (26:25):
H good morning, man, I got those tickets last week. Man,
I knew we would do the beat Man and we
were so close to the first two.

Speaker 8 (26:34):
Games this season.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
I even with stiff back.

Speaker 8 (26:37):
And dray Man, I just was gonna win that game.

Speaker 7 (26:40):
So I got some tickets last week and that that
new after everybody's using pretty good price.

Speaker 8 (26:47):
But no out, man, what we're doing Friday when I
get in there?

Speaker 2 (26:50):
Man, well, Saturday, a game Saturday night. You don't know
what's going to happen after that. What happens in Vegas.
By the way, Ray stays in Vegas. No video, no audio,
no apologies.

Speaker 8 (27:03):
But about the officiating, man, come on, man, how many
years old? Statement? Getting no calls? But they really ranting
about car right now? The seat If a step Curry
makes that shot, nobody's going about the car. It's about
time you got a car. I mean, yeah, we saw
Kim Durant walked two times, travel two times out of
bounds with the ball and didn't get a car in
the playoff. So can we get some Yeah?

Speaker 2 (27:24):
All I said this, and I tell this to Adam
Clinton all the time. He never believes me, evens out
it really does. Now does a call in the second
quarter mean as much in the fourth?

Speaker 9 (27:34):
No?

Speaker 2 (27:35):
But these are unless there's a bias going in officials
are gonna screwup stuff on both sides. They just are.
It's an imp to me, the hardest sport to call. Oh,
no question, and you have a little time to react
and you can't go back. Yeah, I would like to
to Steve's curts point. I feel like far too often

(27:55):
the official that's furthest away doesn't trust the other officials
that are closed and doesn't make call. Yeah, maybe because
it doesn't he really you know, maybe he doesn't trust
the two officials. But sometimes you get a situation where
the call should be made and the ones right in
front of it don't make it, and then somebody does
have to make the calls. Ask you, it's tough. So
they have three officials. Obviously per game, they have a

(28:15):
crew chief who was the veteran, then they got the
mid range guy that's the mid level guy, and then
the third person is usually the young person. It's the
up and comer, or it's a guy that's maybe passes
prime but still can referee, but it can't be a
crew chief. Would you have liked to have seen three
playoff officials working these games or do you still treat

(28:35):
them at the end of the day as these are
just Yeah, I guess all things, all else being equal,
you might as well put the emphasis on the NBA
Cup games and get the best officials, right, why not?
What are you really losing in these other games? With
the I don't know, the the well the magic we're
in the NBA Cup, did the Spurs and the whatever?

(28:56):
The great pace?

Speaker 9 (28:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (28:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (28:59):
And there was no other games play except the two
that will played yesterday? You could have yeah, because they
should have. Yeah, okay, because when I saw let's go,
when I saw the NBA officials announcement for the games
yesterday or on Tuesday, it was a crew chief, lots
of experience, a mid range and then in a young person, yeah,
or a younger experience, you know, lesser experience. You didn't
get playoff rough assignments for these games. I'm with it.

(29:19):
Let's go. Now, what will happen in Vegas? I would
assume that you would have more hoods, a veteran crew
that's been through This would be nice because again, you're
playing for serious money here at this point. He semi
serious for them, Well, more serious, that's right, all right?
So how did our friends at tn T You know,
the Rockets don't get on T and T very often
these days. So inside the NBA the greatest pre half

(29:42):
and post game show in sports television history. Well also
with well I'll save my judgment, I'll save my judge.
Way we'll play? Are we we're gonna play? Right now?
There's one thing that Charles did say that didn't make
that you can clearly tell he's not watching the team.

Speaker 8 (29:56):
Mm hmmm.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
I think I want to say, if you know what
exactly what I'm talking about here is the boys. That's Charles, Kenny,
Chuck and Shack. On the end, it's primarily Charles Barklay
here discussing how that ending of the Rockets Warriors game went.

Speaker 9 (30:12):
Hey impressed with the Houston Rockets. They don't have any
idea how to play basketball?

Speaker 2 (30:17):
Good defense?

Speaker 9 (30:18):
They yeah, but you they played the game strictly on talent.
But they should have won that game. But they got
so much more talent than the Warriors. But there's one
of the reasons I say they got a great record,
they're not ready for prime time because the reffs had
to give them this game tonight. They got a bright future,
but man, they gonna have to learn discipline. They're gonna
learn to take.

Speaker 2 (30:38):
Care of the ball. They're gonna have to learn shots.

Speaker 9 (30:40):
Election you can all of that to be said for teams,
for a team that has like three guys under twenty three,
and but sometimes it happens faster. You ask Kenny and Shack,
like sometimes it comes together. Like they got a lot
of talent and they can't play like they used to be,
like they relevant, they got a terrific coach.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
Now they got to learn, like we got to take
care of the ball.

Speaker 9 (31:06):
Yeah, we got a top taking bad shots like Jalen Green,
he almost had ninets.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
Again, undisciplined Rockets and now last night was on a
great example of it. But the Rockets are top five
and fewest turnovers per game most nights in the NBA.
They have taken care of the basketball. They have not
given away a lot of extra possessions. Uh yeah, I

(31:33):
just looked it up. Their seventh this year. Okay, so
last year they were they were all basketball, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
they were. They've been in the top five for most
of They've dipped a little because the had a high
turnover count against Los Angeles and they had a high
number of three. Actually last year they were eighth, but
this year, they're sad like that's that's that's taking care
of the ball. If you're in the top seven in
the NBA an undisciplined, This team is who are what

(31:57):
is undisciplined? Well, definingly your mind would undisciplined means undisciplined
means playing sloppy, missing a bunch of defense. To me,
you cannot have a team as defensively sound as the
Houston Rockets and call them undisciplined. They are so disciplined
when it comes to defending and being in the right

(32:19):
place and playing pick and roles and positioning and basketball
like you mostly on the defensive side. Offensively, yeah, they
have some issues. I don't know if he is he
zeroing if he's zeroing in on Jalen Green, who he
mentioned by name as somebody who didn't score a lot
of points and had a bad shooting night. Yeah, Jalen
Green can sometimes be undisciplined. But also talking about how
they have a lot of talent and they're mega talented.

(32:43):
Is there a single rocket on this roster who's ever
made an All Star team? Seriously, and the reality is this,
and I don't think I'm making to turn on this
the Rockets. If they're going to get to the next level,
I mean just not just getting the plots of winning
some series. Have got to get a better perimeter game going.
They're winning games despite the fact the three point shots

(33:05):
not falling, and it really hasn't fallen all year long.
Fred van Vliet one time All Star in twenty twenty two. Okay,
so that's one one All Star team. But you know
how they win games. They are super aggressive on defense.
They make every possession difficult, they don't turn the ball
over a lot, They offensive rebound like a mudda, and

(33:27):
they attack the basket on misshots. Now, would it be
fun to see a night where Rockets where the Rockets
make you know, twenty three threes out of thirty nine tries. Absolutely,
but the team just hasn't hasn't is not constructed that
way at this point. So you have to do the
intangibles to win games. And that's the reason why the
Rockets are where they are. The intangibles. Every single timeout

(33:47):
within reason go to the Rockets. Hustle steals, forcing turnovers,
Dylan Brooks putting the clamps on people whenn't necessary, Jabari
Smith giving you a professional defensive effort. They're just they're
in need of a deep perimeter game in which the
Rockets right now just don't have. But they're still winning
despite of it. I'm still then, this is actually what

(34:08):
I was going to say going in, But I was
gonna let us play the Charles Barkley Stefan react. He's
lost his fastball, he doesn't pay attention to the league
and he never really has. But it's even worse now.
To me, I still love him the viral. Yeah, we
can love him, yeah, the viral. Look, we love Lee Corso.
Now he's not necessarily I would not put Charles and
Lee cars on the same conversation. Of course, I'm putting

(34:29):
him in the same conversation. Now, Lee Corso is catatonic
compared to Charles Barkley. But he's lost his fastball. He
barely paid attention to the sport as it is, and
it's even worse. And now they still make the viral
moments on that show, but the basketball analysis has gone
from bad to a complete joke. I would never have
said I go to that show to get a deep

(34:49):
insight on games, right, you know, I go for the entertainment. Fact,
That's what I'm saying has gone from bad to a
complete joke. All right, ten forty five of ten. We've
taken one call from Las Vegas. We've taken one call
from North DAKOTAA Is anybody in the seven one three,
two eight one Age down?

Speaker 11 (35:05):
Are you there?

Speaker 2 (35:06):
Anybody at anybody in Age down? The building was full
last night. Can I tell you one quick thing? They
got five seconds? Go ahead. I am anti throwing up
the HS. It's driving me crazy, frankly, Uh, generation gap
on that. That's it. Yeah, it's very popular with the

(35:29):
young lads, okay, And I would say it's even more
people that are younger than me. When's the lost time
you threw up the H? Organically? Literally organically? I mean
I do it. And when when I meet up with
like we're at an event or something, and I'll throw
up the H. If somebody wants a picture or something,
it's something to do. Throw out the picture, throw up
your H. I throw double rods. Are you're in the club.

(35:52):
If you're in the club and most city dawn from
zero comes on? Oh is that right? Yeah? Okay, I
know what happens to you, Matt. It does set these

Speaker 1 (36:54):
The Man Tana Show with Ross continues on Sports Talk
seven ninety, A lot of.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
Things to get to today. We obviously spent a lot
of time on the rockets. We're gonna move on to
some other things. We got the astros hot Stowe League.
Brian McTaggart's gonna join us. Uh, coming up at one
o'clock today. Don't you feel like we are owed a
good trade or Alex pregnant announcement between now and two
o'clock and we made the sacrifice. We're starting earlier. All
the good stuff usually happens during the eighteen. They don't

(37:22):
know happen during the eighteen sucks all right. Couple things
college wise, So Bill Belichick is really the head coach
in North Carolina. We bring in our college expert. He's
locked on all things college sports. The one only Chris
Gordy is here. Gordy, I've run your tweets the last
twelve hours. You sound ridiculously excited about the prospect of
Bill Belichick running the North calendar program for decades.

Speaker 12 (37:45):
Look, it's an intriguing story. But my god, the ESPN
people this morning. I woke up, turn on the TV
the whole first what's the get up, first, first up?

Speaker 2 (37:57):
Whatever? I call it? The Mike Greenberg things first, get up,
first take it doesn't matter. First off, they bring in
the very objective Devin mccordy for his opinion. Heys basically
decade his whole career.

Speaker 12 (38:12):
He's raving about the hire and how Belichick's gonna crush it.
Dan Orlowski then jumps in and says, there are two
coaches kids want to play for right now. Number one
was Dion and number two is Bill Belichick.

Speaker 11 (38:24):
That's a lot.

Speaker 12 (38:26):
We just had Nationville signing day where in Colorado's class
rank was a top five, top ten.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
I have no idea people don't want to play for
Karbi Smart. I don't want to.

Speaker 12 (38:33):
I'm just saying, like, yes, those guys are polarizing in
their front stories, but let's not act like they're going
to crush it. And Orlosky gets up there and says,
there are SEC schools very afraid of what Bill Belichick
is gonna do.

Speaker 2 (38:45):
In North Carolina.

Speaker 12 (38:46):
He said, give him at least a year to start winning,
and by year two or three, they will be a
perennial playoff team, like stop he's gonna croak.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
Stop it. Perennial means a year after year after year again, guys.

Speaker 12 (38:59):
We could say it's a very intriguing story, let's see
what happens. But just automatically assuming the seventy two year
old is gonna walk into college football and crush it.

Speaker 2 (39:08):
Did we watch his talent evaluation over the last couple
of years in New England? Do we have any idea
of what their nil situation is? They said they have
twenty thousand dollars in the coffers to spend twenty twenty thousand. Yeah,
I'm sorry twenty Oh my god. He needed an assurance
that they went from four million to twenty nine Yeah,
and probably had to see the evidence of it, right.
You just don't take their word for it. Count the cash?

(39:30):
I don't know. Question.

Speaker 12 (39:31):
I did see our friends over at bet online put
out some fun prop bets today on North Carolina. Will
North Carolina win ten or more games next year?

Speaker 2 (39:40):
Ten to one? You can get value on that? How
do I short that? How do I bet the other side?
Here's some other fun ones.

Speaker 12 (39:45):
What will happen first, Bill Belichick's girlfriend in roles for
classes at North Carolina? Or Bill Belichick's girlfriend dates in
North Carolina football player?

Speaker 2 (39:55):
What then Bill watches? Or what you know what I
was going to say, but you held you hold back,
But I held back because I was not right. I
didn't want to be ridiculed by you. But I'm going
to ridicule you. How dare you for you? How dare
you steal my line? That's you are infecting my brain?
And I'm sad that I said it one other one?

Speaker 12 (40:14):
What will happen first? Belichick is fired after your one
or he breaks up with his girlfriend.

Speaker 2 (40:18):
What will happen? First? Let me take you if you're
twenty four, gone for seventy two, you are not giving
that up. She's in for the long haul. No, I
think not that long a woy. She's she's in for
him to die and for him to collect them up.
These guys, the long haul. These guys are all smart though.
When they get in their seventies, they're all signing pre dumps.

(40:39):
And the long haul is two twenty one year olds
getting married. Long haul isn't getting with a seventy three
year old. Now, Bill's got a family, right, I think
he's got a son, being Steve. Steve's significantly older than
the girl. Right, You guys know the caveat on that
right in the contract the I mean, this is all cool.
Were talking about Caroline, but there's really a really much
bigger college football story. What is that. Connor Wegman is

(41:03):
a Houston Cougar. Oh of it. I called that a
week ago. I called it a week ago. That's kind
of tag gut feelings that the guy who had three
touchdowns and five picks this year. Okay, you've seen it
more than I have. What do you think?

Speaker 12 (41:14):
They were NFL scouts saying if he hit his ceiling,
he was projected as a future first round talking about
so this is this is a huge huge Fritz and Staff.
I mean, you look at that team this year. The
one inconsistent was the quarterback spot. Now Connor's got to
stay healthy.

Speaker 2 (41:34):
He was so good that he's leaving where they had.

Speaker 12 (41:37):
I think they just I think they could have stuck
it out, but Marcel Reid gave him that running dynamic.
And now they brought in Jacob Zino from UA B,
who you know, two kind of guys who can fling it.

Speaker 2 (41:47):
So don't be bragging over there at A and M.
But you're bringing a UAB quarterback in, please, So Connor
Wegman got beat up by a UAB quarterback and he's
got out. He sought greener pass. He said, I'm going
to go home and hang out. I'm just asking. He's
demolished number twenty four Missouri, Thank you very much. He
certainly did. The Wegman mania is going to be running

(42:10):
wild all over Space City whatever they're calling the stadium
next year. And no offense.

Speaker 12 (42:13):
I mean, you take a little bit step back to
Big twelve companies, he'll look really good.

Speaker 2 (42:17):
I guess Big twelve company. That's true. Then how you
got out of the sec he ran scared? Now he's
going to greener pastures. One other quick note, Malik Murphy's
gentlemen's name, right. So he goes, he leaves Texas because
Arch is there and it's a good season at Duke,
great season at Duke. Twelve picks a good season at Duke.

(42:38):
And then he's like, I'm gone. Yes, he's going again.
He's going back into portal. Where's he going now? Is
there any word on that? I had heard?

Speaker 12 (42:46):
They may be Florida State, but they just got Thomas
Costianos from Bill Bill o'bryan's.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
Could you imagine somebody brought this up in the office today?
Could you imagine being an NFL team and your team
makes the playoffs. Let's say c J. Stroud when the Texans,
when the ANFC sat just before that first playoff game,
He's like, you know what I'm gonna say, if I
can go test for agency, that's what That's what it's
come down to. He can't even play the damn ball game.
I mean, come on, man, come on. And uh.

Speaker 12 (43:12):
The weird thing at Ole Miss is a bunch of
their players are all announcing they're going to play.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
So whatever that spread is Ole Miss minus whatever it
gets a duke take that lot. All right, So Connor
Wegman wins the Heisman next year, Cougar's get to ten victories,
and Bill Belichick is five and seven next year, sound right, right?
Shout out to whoever the Koog's help brete that check
for Wegman. That's that's a difference makeing And that's that's
a huge one on that or what you know what

(43:37):
I've told you before. I went to school with Connor's dad. Yes,
he was two years older than I was at the
Main Creek High School. Wow, the Main Creek, the Main Creek.
Where where how does he get how he talks? Have
you heard Connor Wegman talks, You're the second person brought
that up to me, and we'll leave it at that. Yeah, bro,
wait where are you from? Bridgeland? Did I give you

(44:01):
guys something to do on a New Year's Eve? You
want to come join me? Uh? New Year's You know
I could actually go if I wanted to. I'm busy.
Are you gonna have a suite? We might, We might
get a sweet I was gonna say, get in parking too, Okay,
so me Ross Matty, come join us. New Year's Eve
two thirty.

Speaker 12 (44:20):
It's the Baylor Bears against the LSU Tigers battling out
at NRG Stadium. The twenty twenty four Kinders Texas Bowl

Speaker 2 (44:28):
I might have to hit up in d Kalu. His
son plays at Baylor.

Speaker 12 (44:30):
We got to get some LSU Baylor trash talk going,
but Baylor LSU New Year's Eve, NRG Stadium. What more
could you ask for to close out an unforgettable twenty

you tomorrow. Let's do it. I mean it's like a
daily good little FCS football and the FCF playoffs is
still going on right right right now a CS Yeah,
nothing going on now. I'm watching the transfer portals. I
watch It's ridiculous. All right, eleven o'clock we'll get the
second hour started of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross

(45:14):
after this lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show, Hi
Rossie coming up, being about twenty five minutes, give or take.
We're gonna have I just don't get it. This is
a weekly segment we do on the radio show that
ask you what in life you just don't get? I
got one off of social media that we had from

(45:35):
last night's game, so that'll be coming up at the
bottom of the hour. What don't you get in life?
If you don't get something, we can help you here
on Sports Talk seven ninety Rockets are a huge win
last night and it was huge and huge as a
term that maybe is off and overuse the biggest win
in franchise history a little too hard. It's a Wednesday

(45:55):
and December, Rossie. We've had two phone calls about the game.
One was from Las Vegas, Nevada, and someone was from
North DA coastwide. Apparently the city of Houston is not
enthralled with the game last night. It's reverberating throughout the world,
but not necessarily here. That's fine, that's fine, all right.

Speaker 10 (46:12):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (46:13):
Texans back on the practice field today. Jalen Petrin no surprise,
Peck injuries done for the season. Juice Scruts were gone
a couple of weeks too. That's a huge miss from
the defense. Honestly, Jalen Petrie has been very good. Oh
and we'll get an update and what's going to Miami
in about ninety minutes. And now we'll check in with
the one of the Miami reporters that we'll join the show,
so we'll get a little thought on that. But man,

(46:35):
and I was listening, I think it was listening to
the A team yesterday. They were talking about this, and
maybe it was Sean Salisburg. They're like, this vibe for
the Texans for a team that's going to cruise towards
an AFC South Championship. It ain't there, is it. Yeah,
we're all spoiled. Bretts one year in, they're eight and five.
It's pretty good. Yeah, But there is no going to

(47:01):
open up a savings account to save money for the
Super Bowl. No. I don't think you should either, because, frankly,
if you think about it, Pittsburgh has jumped the texts
in terms of a favorite. Yes, people still are not
staying away from Baltimore right now because you can the
Lamar Jackson factors here. Yes, and the Chargers. Look, I

(47:22):
don't trust the Chargers come playoff time if there's a
way to lose the game. Crazily that is that a word,
crazily kind of think they will figure out a way
to lose it. They lost the game off a jink. Yes,
that's not their fault. Oh, by the way, the Kansas
City Chiefs don't lose games ever except for one time
in Buffalo. So but they're close every week, they're closer beatable.

(47:46):
It's vulnerable. But I did, I mean it did bring
this up to you a couple of days ago. Do
you do have to give them a little bit of
credit for being able to figure out different ways to
literally win it at the gun every single week. But
I think, and I did think I would ever say this.
It made peal comparison. The Detroit Lions are the creme
to the creme of this league right now. Even on

(48:08):
a night where a few weeks back, when a certain
quarterback throws five interceptions against a certain NFL team and
they still win a game, well, yeah, if Keymie Fairburn
could make kicks. Oh wait a minute, you leave him alone,
they would have won that game at all, Right, you
gotta leave him alone. He's saved this team's bacon more
time he has back. He's almost been relied on too much.
They had those opportunities in that game though. Yeah, and

(48:31):
it's been two straight field goal games for the Lions,
but they've also won a leven straight. There really could
mm so yeah. The Texans against the Miami Dolphins come
up this week. Miami pulled one on of there. You
know what, They beat the Jets in overtime last week.
Matter of fact, the Miami Dolphins took the kickoff in
the overtime scored a touchdown. The Jets couldn't even get

(48:51):
on the football field. It was an old overtime game,
the old fashioned way. Yes, first team to score one
kind of how do you like you like you like it?
Or field goals have to count or a field goals
give you possession. Yeah, it's fine. I'm I mean, the
old sudden death didn't need to go away, at least
in the playoffs. I'm okay with bringing sudden death back,
and it's just a regular season. My thought is I

(49:14):
would lean towards liking sudden death like we had it
in the old school days, because again, it wasn't like
you didn't have multiple opportunities during the course of the
previous sixteen minutes of World football game, right, But in
a playoff game, it felt like it felt bad, like
somebody just gets the kickoff, has to go like thirty
years the game's over. Yeah, so I like this. It's fine. Yeah,
I guess it would be flimsy if you took the

(49:37):
opening kickoff, kicked the fifty one yard field goal and
it had no chance to even respond to that. I
kind of see what they did, I mean, but it's
not one of those things that would just fall on
a sword for no now I'm going to fall in
the surf with them and changing the kickoff rules. It's
still ridiculous. I like them. That's wrong with them. I
can't it just it looks awkward, it looks it looks computerized,
it looks it's just eh, yeah, it's it's different. But

(49:58):
I got no issue with it. They wanted to do
something to limit the the injuries, and yeah, I guess
they've done. It's working out that way, and you get
the occasional run back or big run back.

Speaker 9 (50:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (50:08):
By the way, those of expecting doctor roto today, his
mother is still not doing great. We're going to push
him back till tomorrow. It'll be my final Fantasy football
week ever tomorrow. Come on, Matt, we need you back.
You're such a strong player. The league needs you as
a pillar of the iHeart Hostage. I thought about this.
Sometimes you have to retire on top. You're as compared

(50:30):
to state. You've never won the championship is compared to
you know, sometimes staying a year or too much when
you can retire at the appropriate time. This league has
been running since twenty ten. I think, yeah, that's right,
and you've never won a championship. I've collected some money
over the years. I've paid out some too. I have
paid this year and I'm paying out this year. I

(50:52):
told Kim, I said that I'm done with fantasy football.
She goes halleluja because she doesn't give me a hard
time about it. But it's just I'm like, honey, it's
December two. I need a hundred. Do you want to
lower the entering thing if you're the one that made
it as high as it is because I wanted to
have a dog in the fight.

Speaker 4 (51:07):
No, this is it.

Speaker 2 (51:08):
We should we should play a little. I will remember
all the great players of fantasy football year. We should
run through the teams, all things Houston Totos tomorrow and
believe it or not. Yeah, all right, So seven one
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety If you want to
jump on our conversation today, uh, I just don't get it.
It's coming up in about to twenty minutes from now.

(51:30):
Hot Stove League is hot, right, I guess? Or is
it cooling off? I haven't heard much. Well, we were
talking about building steam with a Brigman deal emminent last night,
and did it happen? Do you think Boris wants to
do this when the home how many more days? Is
today the last day of the meeting?

Speaker 7 (51:47):
I think so.

Speaker 2 (51:50):
Now, obviously, if he makes the announcement, the announcement of
where he goes is going to whichever reporter it's it's
going to be in that city where they're going to
have the grandiose Alex comes out. Where's the new hat
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Hmm. I had
a friend of mine and called me yesterday that lives
out of town, and he's like, if Bregman signs with

(52:14):
the Yankees, there should be no fon farewell video tribute.
There should be none of that. It should be you
went to the freaking Yankees, f you. Some people will
feel like that, and that's okay. I I don't care
where he goes. He's going to get a video tribute,
He's going to get a standing ovation on well. Yeah

(52:37):
for the first, yeah, the third, and fourth probably not,
and he should. He's been one of the pillars of
this championship run. In anyway, frankly, it would be disrespectful.
He had an opportunity to test free agency for the
first time in his major league career. Now the first

(52:58):
contract extension he signed some years out and also bought
some arbitration. Yes, the Astros just put a certain number
at it and said this is as far as we
can go. Bragmant's like, I think I can go somewhere else.
It'd be like Rossie, you know, you leaving to go
another station. Mm hmm. You could have stayed here. The
iheart's like, we're not paying for him to that kind

(53:18):
of money for him and bring up for the table. Yeah.
I don't think I have as much leverage as Alex Bregman.
But if you had come back for a reunion show,
we would not treat you poorly. Oh thank you, Matt.
We would not escort you out with having you a
chance to clear out your stuff. You're not gonna boom me.
I appreciate that. I would you if you're still working
here in five room now. Yeah, That's why I was
gonna say, what's what's out of the ordinary? But yeah,
I think that what I was talking about. Buddy. I
was like, come on, that's a little harsh.

Speaker 14 (53:39):
Now.

Speaker 2 (53:40):
Is it going to be a Kumbaya celebration every time
he comes here?

Speaker 10 (53:42):
No?

Speaker 2 (53:43):
But the first time. Absolutely, he has nothing left to
prove here in Houston. He's done everything possible he could
for this city, and it's time for him to go
get paid. Then you can maximize his earnings and is
he's got a finite he's going to retire at what
forty years old or whatever, probably, so he's got to
make as much as possible until then. I'm okay with that. Now,

(54:05):
he could also say, now people have done this. Not
a lot of people, but a lot of people have said,
my friends, Ince Rossie, you and I can obviously go
somewhere else in this country and work. Okay. I believe
in our attack you, Matt, but we're also happy here.
I'm very happy here. And there's just going to be
a certain level of financial accommodations. This company will give

(54:28):
us that maybe another company in another city might give.
But we choose to stay here just for cost of living.
But I mean what I'm saying it. I mean, look,
you go on Casey Radio every other week. They would
definitely hire you a heartbeat. But do you want to
live in Kansas City? You've decided no, I don't want
to pursue that. You love living in Houston, your family,
your friends are here, you grew up here, so I
root for the teams. There is some of that. Could

(54:49):
there be an athlete that says, you know what, I
could make twenty five thirty million dollars elsewhere, but I
kind of like where I live right now, there's one
very few people to do that, but there are some.
There is one on this here Houston astro's roster. He
wears number twenty seven. Absolutely, he loves being an astro.
He wanted a raise, he got one, but he could
have gotten more money somewhere else. Absolutely, So it does happen.

(55:11):
You're asking pregnant to be that person in alex Is, like,
you know what, I've only got so many years of
a baseball life. If this was an insurance if I
was working for an insurance company or working for a
car dealership, maybe, but it's baseball where there will be
on only a certain number of years where he'll be
able to compete at a high level for a high salary.
So I don't bemoan it. But if it's the Pinstripes,

(55:32):
that's it's going to be. As it's the Rangers, would
be one, I think, so he's would be two and
everybody else will be a distant third. I agree seven
one three two one two five seven, ninetie seven one
three two one two five seven, Annie, there is one
astro you better get ready to not see were in
your guarant twenty twenty five because it sounds like to
me he is definitely going to be a goner and
it's not Alex pregnant. We'll talk about that in the moment.

(55:54):

(57:24):
Thomas Show with Ross now on Sports Talk seven ninety.
All right. The rumors about Kyle Tucker Ross include the Cubs,
the Yankees, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Could this twenty twenty

(57:52):
five roster be without Presley Bregman, Tucker and uh from Berveldez.
Chances that all what would you put the percentages on it?
All four being gone thirty forty by opening day all four?

(58:15):
I think Valdez is the one that sticks, is that
it would be the one that would be the most
likely to still be here unless you just can't find
anybody that wants to inherit. The Ryan Prosley contract and
he says no to a no trade, which I'm thinking
he's gonna say he's gonna want to go somewhere else.
I mean, I think Ryan did not have any fun
last year. Uh where where's he going to close?

Speaker 13 (58:39):
Where is it?

Speaker 2 (58:39):
Where does he want to be? I don't even I
think he's I think he and his agent are trying
to figure out at this point that there's nobody that's
going to think he's a closer. No nobody. But if
he goes to a contender and as an eighth inning guy,
at least he doesn't feel like that he was pushed aside,
like I think in his mind he maybe he thought

(58:59):
he was pushed side here for Josh Hater right, Uh,
yeah he was, but he is. I mean, I guess
to get to certain levels of heights and of professional athletes.
You have to have this sort of never ending and

(59:19):
unfaltering belief in yourself, and he has that clearly. But
let's be realistic, dude, You're not Josh Hater. Josh Hater's
best season which was well, unfortunately the season before he
game over. Right, it's better than anything Ryan Presley has
ever done. Yeah, you're not the closer. And once he realizes,
once his agent does enough digging, that he doesn't close

(59:42):
for contender, he may close for a second tier team.
The question is going to be do you want to
go play for your contender or do you want to
go back to your ninth fitting role? Did you are
you happy a doing that and playing for a team
that's not expected to contend is compared to being a
setup guy for a team that is contending. But my
guess is that Ryan was Ryan had a was hurt

(01:00:03):
from the jump and really never got past it. And
his performance Is that like a good feeling about him
being dred percent? No, no, no, I'm just saying that.
I just think there was such an emotional hurt emotional Yeah,
I'm sorry, I think you meant like hen ego kick.
Oh yeah, that hurt him a little. I'm sorry, I
thought you meant physically. Uh yeah, he's his ego was

(01:00:24):
certainly hurt. But he pitched very well. Actually, I mean
he started off terrible. He just wasn't the Presley of
years past. Now, the whip was way worse than the
year before, but I think overall his eer was better
than the year before. Yeah, all right, let's go the
phones and talk to Philip in Paarland at eleven twenty
four on seven and he Philip, good afternoon or good morning?

Speaker 10 (01:00:45):
That is, Hey, good morning. You know, if careers ended today,
I much take Presley's career over haters. Presley's been a
beast his playoff record. I was listening to some Cleveland
and Baseball announcer talking about Presley's playoff record.

Speaker 8 (01:01:04):
It's ridiculous.

Speaker 10 (01:01:07):
I don't know them off the top of my head.
I'm a lazy Astros fan. Uh to the Rockets, Kudos
to the Rockets, Matt. I'm I'm slowly getting on board.
There's a great piece in the Sunday New York Times
a little bit ago about Van Vliet. Yeah, but the
the reason I'm calling is about Bregman. Uh, you know,

(01:01:30):
and really all of the players. How much do they need?
I mean, come on, I mean, how much can you spend?
What is it just ego? Maybe it's more about what
the wife wants see, That's what I would want to
hear more about, or what what are the women want

(01:01:50):
in these deals? And also what the players want? Is
it about location, geography? Is it just numbers and like,
oh my number, you know, my net present value is
highigher than yours. I never got that sense from the
answers after following them for so many years. You know,
with this current group, with Altuve being the lead, the
beautiful Jose Altuve, are you kidding?

Speaker 15 (01:02:12):
You know?

Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
But but Philip the lead. If you're telling the lead
of Jose Altuve is how they do it, then the
guys around him didn't follow his lead. George Springer didn't
follow his lead. Charlie Morton didn't follow his lead. Chi
Career didn't follow his lead. Philip, this is this is
the case. And thank you for the phone call. I appreciate.
This is just good old fashioned Americana. If there's somebody

(01:02:37):
out there that wants to give you significantly more money
and guaranteed cash and again in professional baseball, there's own
or for that matter, professional sports. There's only a certain
amount of shelf life. You're just going to take the
best deal. I saw a story today nonsports related, and
I wanted to make sure I got the numbers right.

(01:02:57):
I mean, Elon Musk ROSSI has more money than I'll
ever imagine. Right now. They announced it, like yesterday. His
net worth is now worth four hundred billion dollars. He's
pretty good. He could have been happy at seventy five billion. No,
of course not. Because people that love money want more
of it.

Speaker 8 (01:03:14):
They just do.

Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
Yes, Now, I did bring up example Ross in the
last segment. My family is here, my friends are here.
I've I'm growing up doing my dream jobs, working in
Houston sports radio, the voice of the Rockets. There's nothing
that's gonna say. I'm not gonna all of a sudden
say I'm in the open market. CHARLEL. Hornet's come get me.
That's not gonna happen, right, But everybody has a price.

(01:03:35):
But everybody's got some sort of a price, and it's
about the trade off, and it's about how much you
value one thing over the other. Yeah, everybody's got different parameters.
But from my experience, covering sports and talking to athletes
in the last thirty years. They usually take the money
in the bigger contracts, even if it's to a place

(01:03:57):
that they loved once before. But you know what, thinking, yeah,
maybe it's time for a change. And by the way,
three more years and seventy five more million dollars in
guaranteed money sounds good and let's not forget that. One
of the reasons Alex Bregman wears number two is because
he was the second overall pick and he wants to
remind himself of that. Another reason he wears a number.
You brought this up yesterday. It made me cringe a

(01:04:17):
little bit. I don't think I brought it up on air.
No that so I'm saying, you're gonna do it now,
make me cringe. His childhood idol was Derek Gitah. I'm
packing the second basement, Derek Gitah. His number is retired
for which organization? Matthew, don't say it. The New York Yankees,

(01:04:45):
just saying. I'm not saying. I'm just saying, that's all.
And we talked about it. It's a Hollold franchise. If
you're going to leave anyone, if you're somebody who's up stylizing. Yeah,
de tap, it's really weird. The first year I went
and saw a Yankees game at Yankee Stadium, they used

(01:05:07):
the old PA announce of the dead guy, Bob Shepherd.
How'd they do that? They reanimated his corpse? No, they
just recorded it. And what he was saying, Bennie, oh,
he had died in the team of the lineup was
the same. So the PA announcer does eight of the
nine guys. Oh, okay, but every time it's Derek Jeter,
it's now about short stop Derek Gita. Okay, So they

(01:05:27):
only used the dead guy for Jeter. That's it. That's weird.
I don't know. I don't know if we would have
considered it weird because Bob Sheppard was considered an icon
of doing the stadium announcing at Yankee Stadium. Okay, well,
good for him, you'll be nice. Let's bring back that
dead guy to announce Derek Jeter. They am bringing back
and they hit the record Button's what they did. The
necessarily bring him back. Okay, stop, That's why they kept

(01:05:51):
him at shortstop. That's why they never moved to third base.
That's why they moved a Rock. I mean, you are
a great shortstop, but you're going you're going to third
because we already got Derek Jeter recorded better shortstopping Jeter
at that time. You're such a Jeter hater. I'm not
a Jeter hater. I got a friend of mine who's
such a Yankee fan. He named his son Jeter. That's
a little much. Well, I'm also, I mean, what kind

(01:06:13):
of person would name their children after sports figures? Grow up?

Speaker 13 (01:06:18):
Bell?

Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
I talk to green Hill yesterday and kidding, by the way,
I had grand Hill shoot a video for Cameron and
oh yeah, wow, look at you got some?

Speaker 10 (01:06:27):
I got some?

Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
Did he roll his eyes when you ask?

Speaker 15 (01:06:29):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
Second time? I'm asked him you have a second time
you did it because one time I did? A time
when you leave grand Hill alone? No, he's great. He
doesn't want to talk to your children that he doesn't know.
He talked. He talked to my wife who he didn't
know either. Geez. Even worse, I didn't say, hey, you
want to hook up with my wife. I didn't say that.
I said, hey, just say I just supplied it. Well,
I mean it's probably on her bucket list's on a list.

(01:06:52):
I mean we all have a list. You're getting past, Matthew,
don't don't we have a list. Every grown ass man's
got a list, every grown ass woman's got a list. Yeah,
but you're not really gonna let her go on never
mind check off the list. No but sample, I would
become uncomfortable. But I but checking off no time. We're
not like, we're not going four deep on the list here.

(01:07:13):
Maybe one maybe when I'm eighty five eating food out
of a blunder. Oh my god, ladies and gentlemen, there's
something you don't get. There's a lot I don't get
that's sitting to my left. Stop it is there something
in your life you just don't get? Let us know
right now. It's seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety.

(01:07:34):
If there's something you don't get, we want to hear
from you right now. Eleven thirty on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 12 (01:07:45):
Do you have something in.

Speaker 2 (01:07:46):
Your life that you just don't get? No need to worry,
no need to We will just do the toping, just
see if we comprehend the things that may un use
our friends. It's time to say I just don't get
it all right here we go eleven thirty five. This
is where you call and you get your advice from

(01:08:07):
your good friends Connor Ross and Matt Things. You just
don't get a couple from me real quick. Right off
of Twitter, sour our website. Put the final minute of
the game on with my radio call, and two people
put on there and you saw the exact same thing.
Let me make sure I get it here. One in

(01:08:27):
person says, I just can't watch a game played on
a court that looks this ridiculous. See you said to yourself,
I'm gonna turn it off. The game is the court
is so ridiculous and so bad, I'm not gonna watch it.
That is that I've never thought of it that as
a legitimate excuse is to why to not watch something.
I get it a little bit. If you're you're a

(01:08:48):
fringe fan and you're just looking to flip it on
and you're like, you know what, this court sucks and
you're gonna flip it off. I imagine that person is
not a diehard Houston Rockets fan. And the next person
after that says, nobody watches this anymore. I mean that's
simply not true. Now our numbers down a little bit, yes,
but using the term nobody is not relevant. There were
eighteen thousand people in the building last night. The game

(01:09:11):
was nationally televised.

Speaker 8 (01:09:12):
M H.

Speaker 2 (01:09:13):
Just saying nobody watches it is ridiculous. So my question is, Rossie,
when you say something on social media, do you have
to comment on every single thing some people do?

Speaker 5 (01:09:23):
What do you do it?

Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
I just don't get it. They want attention? Connor? Are
you big Connor? Are you a big attention seeker? Do
you like to comment on every single thing you see
on Twitter?

Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:09:33):
He tweets hardly at all. I don't tweet that much. Yeah,
get your tweets up, Connor, get the followers up. Let's go.
I just say, boys, I just don't get it, Okay, Yeah,
I'm I mean, I'm with you in that. I had
a couple of responses because I was tweeting about the
Rockets last night and there were a couple of people like,

(01:09:54):
no one's watching this, no one cares the rockets? What
are the rockets? Who cares about them?

Speaker 12 (01:09:59):
Like?

Speaker 2 (01:10:00):
Well, the building was full, it was on TNT. I said,
I mean, you're here in Houston, Texas talking about the Rockets.
Do we just t it do we just have a
really cranky public existence some people, not everybody. I think
the majority of people are good, well adjusted people, maybe

(01:10:20):
not as many as there were, you know, years ago
before the social media age. Like I'd be putting up
a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker. It says Sarah Jessica
Parker is going to be in a new movie. Yes,
and instead of saying good for her or just scrolling
past it, they'd say she didn't look that hot. I
could hear the name from the horse face, or somebody
says rude. Very rarely do I ever comment on something

(01:10:44):
that I unless it's something I really really object to,
and I guess maybe these people really really object to
the NBA. One more, This is another one. Matt the
Ben says, I don't get the Ncason Tournament in the NBA.
It makes no sense. They have a blank ton of
trophies to get rid of or something. I just don't
get it. Well, the reality is they're stealing a bit.
The NBA is a bit stealer because you've seen this,

(01:11:04):
and you've seen this in soccer for generations. Correct, it's different.
The NBA does it a little bit different because they
counted The Cups in soccer are a completely different competition.
The records and the goals and all that don't count.
But the games like last night's game, the points, rebounds, assists, turnovers,
et cetera. It all counts to the record books. It's
a whole different competition. But yeah, they did that. They

(01:11:26):
get they poached that idea, and I'll tell you exactly
why they did it. Generally, year after year, people don't
care about regular season NBA basketball before December twenty fifth.
I mean, I'll be honest with you, It's not the
most thrilling thing in the world to me.

Speaker 4 (01:11:40):
Uh huh.

Speaker 2 (01:11:41):
But it's a little layer. But I'm not gonna oversell
it to anybody going, hey, why'd you watch this? I'm
not asking you to do that. I don't know how
much extra juice was in the Toyota Center last night
because it was the NBA Cup, but I'm gonna tell
you there's more than if it Wasn't you know what
the juice for me was? And again, it's selfish. Party
is selfish. The trip to Vegas to me is never
a bad thing. But number two is the Rockets have

(01:12:04):
lost the Golden Set Warriors fifteen consecutive times, going back
to twenty twenty. I was sick and tired of watching
Steph Curry put up these fourth quarter hail Mary's that
go in and they win, and I was excited, Sue me. Yeah, So,
I mean that's the point. To make a little money,
try to give rab a little more extra attention before

(01:12:26):
December twenty fifth. There's a reason why the Cup is
ending like in this week. I thought that they were
going to do it all year long, and it was
going to be I don't want to say more prestigious,
but if to me, it would have held a little
bit more weight if they did it for more long term,
just a little extra layer. But nobody should be taking
this super seriously. It's one hundred percent of gimmick, And

(01:12:49):
if you want to call it gimmick, that's fine to me. Again,
it doesn't change to me. I was as excited about
the thought of going to Nevada as I was seeing
the Rock finally be Draymond Green and having Steve Kurr
wind like a little bitch. It's made up. It's a gimmick.
They're doing it to get to garner more interest in
the regular season. It worked last year it's we're not
working as much this year, but I like it. It's

(01:13:10):
cool and it's not gonna hurt you. It's okay. Hey,
I got one for you. What what don't you get?

Speaker 11 (01:13:15):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
You got one for me?

Speaker 15 (01:13:17):
What?

Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
I don't get? What don't you get? Why did the
North Carolina tar Heels just sign a seventy three year
old coach to a five year contract. I don't understand
either side of this. Bill Belichick is arguably the greatest

(01:13:39):
NFL head coach of all time. To me, he is
number one. He's fourteen wins away from from besting Don
Shula for the most NFL wins all time. And then
the UNC Chapel Hill folks just got rid of a
coach who is into his seventies to hire a coach
into his seventies. They say one year. I think Mac

(01:14:01):
Brown is one year older. What are they doing? I yet,
I didn't know when they said younger they were going
with the seventy three year old. I don't get it, Rossie,
I don't get it. This is going to fail. The
time that Bill Belichick is wearing North calendar gear is
going to ultimately fail. He's not gonna want to listen
to eighteen or nineteen year olds who are going to

(01:14:21):
leave the portal and leave their school after one year
and have to spend all the money in the nl
NIL for these guys to leave. He doesn't need the money.
He's never coaching college. He does a good job at ESPN.
I think he's great. On the Manning cast. He is
hooking up well, I don't know how often, but he's
hooking up with the twenty four year old on the
magic of pills these days, I'm sure more often than

(01:14:42):
you would have been. Just be with her endlessly, keep
her satisfied, and enjoy retirement. You know, twenty four olds,
and you need to love him more than probably more
than he's willing to give. Right, Matthew is a twenty
four years o. The beato different than a seventy three.
The answer, of course, you know what. I'm talking about football.

(01:15:04):
I just don't get it. I'm sitting here talking about
football and Bill Belichick in the Carolina tar Heels, and
you want to talk about a seventy two year old
plowing his twenty four year old girlfriend. I didn't say plow.
That's exactly where you go. I didn't say tap. I
didn't say plow hit, none of that. Whatever you want
to call it, make sweet love whichever way. Why I

(01:15:27):
just don't get it. Why do we have to go
in this direction every time weekdays ten to two, Connor,
we go to you, my friend? Is there something you
don't get? Before we talk to Ronnie and Rosenberg? I
had a different one, but I don't know. I just
thought of that.

Speaker 14 (01:15:39):
Did you guys talk talk about the old The law
in Ohio, oh interest the bil Tuesday that would classify
flag planting at Ohio Stadium around Buckeye's football games as
a felony. The Ohio Sportsmanship Act comes in response to
Michigan's attempt to plant its flag after a win at
Ohio State, which set off a brawl between the teams.

(01:15:59):
And I think a lot of people can relate when
I say I just don't get it. Why don't elected
officials have better things to do? If you don't want
flag planting or taunting, just win the game? You know me,
I didn't mind it until it became an issue, and
I still don't mind it. It's it's college, it's it's
bloods and grips.

Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
Hatfield McCoy's you know what you don't want a flag
being played on your home football field and beat the team.
Then montagues and capulets, Yes, the villarri Alison and Thomas's
we don't got beef, do we?

Speaker 15 (01:16:32):
Well?

Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
You even listen to my wife. I love your family, okay, yeah,
way more than I love you.

Speaker 4 (01:16:37):
I know.

Speaker 2 (01:16:38):
I just don't get it either. I mean what it
called the flag sportsmanship law or something like that, the
Ohio sportsmanship You know what, that's just politicians trying to
get involved in sports again, cowtowing to their base making stupid.
It's it's ridiculous. Don't get me started, all right, Ronnie
and Rosenberg is first up. If there's something you don't get,

(01:16:58):
we'll get to you next. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two

it from us. Now at your turn, Ronnie your first up.

question for you, Ronnie, what don't you get?

Speaker 4 (01:17:53):
Good morning, Matt. How you guys doing do some long
distance commuting?

Speaker 1 (01:17:57):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (01:17:58):
Three or four days a week?

Speaker 8 (01:17:59):
And I look already y'all show you. You really make
my day, and h I enjoy your knowledge.

Speaker 4 (01:18:04):
You've been you guys have been around for a pretty
good while.

Speaker 8 (01:18:06):
And know a whole bunch of stuff.

Speaker 13 (01:18:08):
So help me with this, please, huh, please help me?
How the heck does momentum work in a sports event?
How come the momentum swings? I just don't get how
everything can be going one team's way and then the
next thing you know, it a little fumble or or
a turnover or something, and the next thing you know,

(01:18:28):
the other team is just wax and the other guys.

Speaker 2 (01:18:31):
So help me with that, please? All right, Ronnie, thank
you for the phone calling nice, the nice words. Oh,
that's it's an intangible. You can't pick up a piece
of momentum. You can't scoop it up. You can't manuf
I guess you could manufacture momentum if you wanted to. Ross.

(01:18:53):
I believe we're stuck here. I don't know, Ronnie. If
I get you the answer, Ronnie lateis gentlemen to present
to you, Ronnie Sports Harvey ex funny momentum. This is
my opinion. I've gotten in very big arguments with people
about this before I know, Yes, it's not real. It's
made up. To me, the easiest way to talk about

(01:19:17):
momentum is to say, go to the live betting market
and if you're so, if you know momentum and you
know this team has all the momentum and they're got
it all than live betam, and then you're gonna win
one hundred percent of the time that you can predict it.
It's something we make up a team. It's very human
to look at patterns and say, there has to be
a reason for this pattern. Sometimes there's not a rhyme

(01:19:38):
or a reason. I would say, especially at the professional
level when you have the more mentally strong players, maybe
at the lower levels it's a little bit different and
maybe there can be more. But we've seen teams come
back from twenty one point deficits and still lose in
over time. We've seen all the I mean any number
of examples that we can give to To me, it's something.

(01:20:01):
It's a label that we place on something that is
not really even especially at the professional level of sports.
It's not real. But in a sporting event, momentum and
there is a definition for momentum. Okay, I can change
you go from a thirteen to one run and the

(01:20:22):
other side scores eleven or the next thirteen, that would
be a momentum shift. Yeah, you could say after the
fact the momentum shifted. But I think it's not predictive,
it's not anything real, and it's not honestly anything worth
talking about. To me, all right, I got one in
my opinion. Why I'm going for you? I an this
is maybe not for I just don't get it. But
I don't get why people in sports believe there's adversity

(01:20:46):
every day in life, we live through adversity. Wait, there
is adversity, so then there is adversity. But I mean
every team has it, every team that wins a championship
overcomes adversity. I've never in my life, whether it's watching
a college football team, a pro basketball team, a pro
baseball team, a thirteen year old's soccer team, ROSSI, adversity

(01:21:13):
is there every single day, and everybody has to overcome
some sort of adversity. I have to get over adversity
of fighting traffic coming in from Kingwood every morning. That's adversity.
Getting into the car and driving and stopping and getting
off of what we're getting off these days at Connor

(01:21:35):
Collinsworth is that what they're making us do. Equipment equipment,
making us turn left on right to jump onto forty
five in these weird ass side streets. That's adversity. But
we fight through it. We get here in time. Okay,
I'm sick and tired of every sports team I ever
hear about talking about adversity. I just don't get it.

(01:21:56):
Do you think some teams go through more adversity than others? Absolutely?

Speaker 15 (01:22:00):
No.

Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
What everybody's got injuries. Everybody's got the same amount of
injuries every team. That's the most ridiculous now, but generally speaking,
I'm I'm not gonna say all that team's got fourteen
times the adversity of something else, a versions of blanket statement,
every tale. No one ever says. Nobody says ross about this.
We had minor adversity this year. No, he's either you

(01:22:21):
have it or you don't. No, some have more adversity
than others, and that's more injuries. Okay, even talking to
I'm just I'm sick and tired of adversity. Well, I
get it. People go through adversities, and every day, every
single human has adversity. Is yeah, but some worse than others.

(01:22:44):
That's that's that's that's for yours, that's for your decision. Fact,
your blood pressure is higher today than it was yesterday,
that's an adversity. Okay, Well you're done with You're good, okay.
Or I was driving to and then somebody crashed into me,
that's adversity. That's not the same as you having to

(01:23:04):
deal with traffic on equipment or oh god forbid, literally
even like serious life adversities and we don't even necessarily
need to get into correct That's what I'm saying. Their
real adversities involving real life tragedies, in real life struggles,
having one of your players pull a Hammy is not
realize is not a real adversity. It's just the it's
just the wear and terrify Jalen Petrie tearing his pectoral

(01:23:27):
that's adversity for the Yes Texas on the AMC South
go overcoming adversity. Enough depth in your secondary man up.
Kenyon Green has been blocking. It sucks. Yeah, like a
tree stump. You guys overcoming adversity with that c J.
Stroud's not having to overcome that adversity. They're the most

(01:23:48):
blown blocks and pressures allowed in football. That's not adversal.
That's incompetence. That's Shroud's fault. Yeah, people have to overcome
ADVERSITYJJ has to go overcome adversity. That is general manager
didn't got to get a better offensive line in front
of him. That's adversity. Just it's just an overused cliche term.

(01:24:08):
Everybody has adversity every single day, but some more than others,
and some teams more than others. You know what, when
you win something down the road, which never I don't
think you want everything in your life. Yeah, you're gonna
be like I want to thank my mom, my dad,
my brothers, my sisters, my friends. Well, you know I
overcame it, overcame ab diversity, adversity. You don't know what

(01:24:31):
the hell you're talking about. Seriously, adversity sucks. Everybody's lord,
nobody's got nobody lives in adversity free life. I'm so
happy I started this. It's good. Well, Ross, you've got
three minutes overcome some adversity for the News of Noon.
Can you do it? Is christ you jump a JC

(01:24:52):
on me. I shouldn't be as dumbfounded as I am,
but I am. Oh, because I don't agree with you.
It makes me unbounded, it makes you dumbfounded. Okay, I didn't.
I didn't realize that was such a big deal. Advert.
I mean, I'm just thinking it's too it's too often used.
It's ridiculous. Everybody's got adversity, and for somebody to every

(01:25:14):
time somebody wins a championship, we had overcome a versus. Well,
of course you did, because that's what sports are. Sports
is adversity overcoming it every single time the News at
Noon is up. Next, let's tell you about love volleyball.
First League one volleyball. You know they have a lot
of diversity in League one volleyball. You know they gotta
get to the court. They gotta drive down there, they
gotta play. They gotta have a lot of fans screaming
at them. That's overcoming adversity. League one Volleyball does a

of guys are playing volleyball now. It is such a
great sport and you're gonna be able to see it
played at the very highest level. League one Volleyball lovb

starting up this January at the four ben Epicenter.

Lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas Show twelve O three
and a Shaw. What's happening to lunch timers? Halfway Home
on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross on a Thursday.
Lots to celebrate after last night's huge victory inside Tota Center.
Not so much to celebrate if you're an Alex Bregman
and or Kyle Tucker Fani, with the rumors continuing to

(01:26:33):
swirl about their futures.

Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
Who present that and more as part of the News
at Noon. All Right, we've done the News at Noon
for about three or four weeks, and every single time
we've gone to the News at Noon at the desk,
we have Ross changing his voice, not every single time,
but it's gonna happen again now, isn't it. Hello, Matt,
this is the News at Noon here on the Matt Thomas,

(01:26:56):
I don't want you sound like a wait. News. Here
is what is happening with the Rockets winning got a
regular voice last night in the NBA Cup. But Jempsky
to inbout it three and a half to go, all
eyes on Curry, but Jemsky looks, looks, gives it up
to Curry. But zemsky side pocket is fuck you Buck

(01:27:18):
and the Rockets what not? The Rockets are going to
Vegas and.

Speaker 3 (01:27:24):
The street is over, predit Pajensky.

Speaker 2 (01:27:31):
The shot was plucked and the.

Speaker 3 (01:27:39):
Rockets word, oh my goodness.

Speaker 2 (01:27:44):
What a cut back onto the Western Conference semifinals downgraded Okay,
NBA Cup semi finals, the Houston realistic, But Matt the
curse lifted energy in the building. It felt good the
Rocket Fifteen losses in a row, sports, the Demons and God.

(01:28:07):
The Golden State Warriors fifteen too many. It was way
too many. February of twenty twenty the last time the
Houston Rockets had beaten the Golden State Warriors. So a
wonderful comeback by the Rockets, a low scoring game, ninety
one to ninety. But what has become a story afterwards?

(01:28:28):
What Steve Kerr had to say after the game.

Speaker 6 (01:28:31):
I've never seen a loose ball foul and a jump
ball situation eighty feet from the basket with the game
on the line.

Speaker 2 (01:28:38):
I've never seen that.

Speaker 6 (01:28:40):
I think I saw in college one time thirty years.

Speaker 2 (01:28:43):
God, so much over see in the NBA.

Speaker 6 (01:28:46):
That is unconscionable. Don't I don't even understand what just happened.
You know, loose ball diving on the floor eighty feet
from the basket, and you're gonna give guy two free
throws to decide the game. When people are scrambling for
the balls, just give them a timeout, give them a timeout,
and let the players decide the game. That's how you officiate,

(01:29:09):
especially because the game was a complete wrestling match.

Speaker 2 (01:29:14):
Now to his point, it was a very physical game
and a lot of fouls were called. But still at
the end of the day, a foul was called, and well,
you can't boil it down to just one play, Steve Kerr.
But oh he did. He did. He boiled it down
to one play. Steve Kerr very upset with the officials
last night. Matt, your thoughts are you weeping for Steve
Kerr and the Golden State Warriors. If there's any NBA

(01:29:37):
team that I will not give the benefit of the
doubt to, it's the Golden State Warriors, who, by the way,
Apprin Shengoon was physically manhandled. Do you think you mentioned
a little bit? Do you think he sold it a
little bit too much? Or do you I mean he
sold when he grabbed someone's shoulders, how do you not
sell it? Yeah, he did sell it. But it was

(01:29:57):
not a basketball play. It was necessary, It wasn't unnecessary
and excessive, which is flagrant too. But it was not
and it's at the most simplistic terms, Ross it was
not a basketball play. And if it's not a basketball play,
it's a flagrant one. It's not a basketball play. It
was excessive, I'm sorry, unnecessary, and it was also simply basically,

(01:30:18):
in effect a take foul because Draymond Green got faked
out of his shoes and then alprin ching Gun was
gonna have a free lane to the basket. Yeah, and
he found he mugged him. Yeah, he fouled them. So, yeah,
don't cry for Steve Kurr. Not that you are, but
my goodness, I'll never cry for the Warriors. I mean,

(01:30:39):
I appreciate the hell what they've done and how they've
won the championships. And you got the greatest jump shooter
of all time, and you may have had the best
backcourt shooting of all time. And frankly, even though Draymond
Green gets away with murder, he's maybe one of the
best five by five players ever to play in the
history of the NBA. I mean he's the Is he
the best center of all times? Six nine and under?

(01:31:01):
Sure would go to guy in the fifties who was
like six foot six and really good. By the point
he said, most guys in the NBA at least six
to eleven. Yes, I mean he's gonna be a Hall
of Famer. He's one of the best defenders. Ever, he
was making great defensive plays all over the place. He
gets so he and Steve Kerr, I mean, especially Draymond
gets away with everything, gets away with murder, arguing with

(01:31:22):
the officials. All right, let's go on to the baseball
side Matthew MLB dot COM's Mark Finesen reporting Bregman could
be the next major domo to fall in the free
agent market. Astros, Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers among the teams
quote in the mix for Bregman's services. Do we need

(01:31:47):
to have a heart to heart with some people that
think the Astros were ever in this to begin with?
We have the quotes from Boris that he has been
talking with Dana Brown. You know, maybe it's just the
cynic in me that says that this was that this
was The conversations were pleasant. There was obviously affinity for

(01:32:10):
Bregman towards Houston and Houston towards Bregman. But at the
end of the day, Alex knew when he left Spring
Turning last year, and there was no offer on the
table at any point during this year that the Astros
were kind of mentally and organizationally preparing themselves for Alex
to test free agency and go somewhere else. I'm curious

(01:32:32):
how much will come out because stuff is coming out,
like about the Sodo deal. There's this insight or report
by Jeff Passen and others on ESPN talking about the
dinners and the behind the inner workings. I'd be very
curious to hear or read a similar story on Alex
Bregman and this whole free agent deal as far as
what's going on the meetings, who was close, who wasn't,

(01:32:54):
and stuff like that, and we'll find out, I would hope, so,
I would think so. I mean, remember this off coming
out with Sodo about the the Yankees wouldn't offer a Swede,
but the Mets were willing to offer us all that
type of little stuff. Now, of course Bregman not as
highly sought after as Juan Soto, but still that type
of stuff I think will be interesting. And when it

(01:33:15):
comes out, I will do the the Carlos kraamotive, Well,
here's the Astros offer me. I don't think it's gonna
be that, but I think there'll be enough people that
will drop hints of where the Astros are is an
organization mm HM and also met on the baseball side.
The Astros and Kyle Tucker? Will there be a trade?

(01:33:36):
There continues to be reports a Joel Schrman Sherman of
The New York Post describing the Yankees as among the
team's quote most seriously end quote perceiving pursuing the outfielder.
Of course, there was the channel of Rome and Rosenthal
report about the Cubs being involved. What's gonna happen? Kyle Tucker?
If I asked you right now an Astro opening day,

(01:33:57):
no chance, no chance, zero percent, way, no, how okay?
And I would probably lean seventy five twenty five to
the Chicago Cubs. I just want to y'all think about
this for a second. I know you've got one more
story to get you not really okay? Well, I'm Mike,
what restarting the computer instance? This is a whole mess. Sorry?
Go ahead. Can you imagine a twenty twenty five roster

(01:34:20):
with your starting right fielder being Kyle Tucker and your
starting third basement being Alex Sprigman, and they're both wearing pinstripes?
Did you even bother playing the season? Oh? You know what,
I just made you vombit in your own mouth.

Speaker 13 (01:34:37):
That I know.

Speaker 2 (01:34:39):
You just made me sick. That's a possibility, isn't That's disgusting, Matthew.
So let me ask you this, Juan Soto paying outrageous
money on a fifteen year contract, or Kyle Tucker and
Alex Spragman. Who had a better offseason if that happens
the Mets or the Yankees. Scott Boris, Yes, Scott Boris

(01:35:02):
wins every single place. I didn't think about it that
he doesn't have Kyle Tucker. I believe he exl sportsman.
That's right, that's right. The point being is that he
does have Bregman and Soto. Think about that. That'd be
quite an offseason for the Yankees. Now. The difference in
Kyle Tucker is he has one year left on his contract. Yes,
Does that preclude somebody, as some team from getting involved

(01:35:24):
knowing that Kyle Tucker could certainly take his talent somewhere
else in twenty twenty six? Hmmm?

Speaker 9 (01:35:31):
Maybe?

Speaker 2 (01:35:32):
All right? Anything else on the offbeat and track. I
do have something, but we're gonna have to get to
it on the other side, because it's time for a break.
We're not extending the news at noon past that. Okay, well,
but we'll just make an anecdotal coming back. Yes, we're
gonna go to Miami about him. It's a quick piece
of audio. Ooh, I will play it, okay, right bottom
of the Are we going to Miami? Check on the Dolphins?

one last leftover thing from the news at noon, Matt,
you always want something app off beach. I thought i'd
bring it to you. But is this sports related? Head
coach Pat Kelsey of the Louisville Cardinals was asked in
a press conference this week about mentally preparing his team
for a tough week. They have Duke, then they have UTEP,
and then they have Kentucky. What is it like preparing

(01:38:12):
the team for such a tough and or mentally draining schedule.

Speaker 15 (01:38:17):
I mean, we get a bunch of free sneakers. I
wear sweatsuits the work like like you know, my kids
are healthy, my wife's hot, like I got I got
pretty good life. We get to play college basketball, we
get to play in the Young Center, we get to
get ready for Utah. My dad used to say it
all the time like I would. I would say, Dad,

(01:38:39):
you gotta go to work today, said's not, I get
to go to work today, right heck heck yeah, you know.
I mean, schedule's been a little bit difficult and we
had some adversity, but oh Jesus, the guy's been awesome.
Guy's been awesome, The process has been Great's also take

important game in the history of the programs. The next
one we play, and that's that one on Saturday, about

It was this one right here.

Speaker 15 (01:39:04):
It's the deal.

Speaker 2 (01:39:06):
First he had me until he said he had adversity
because everybody's got adversity. It gets free sneakers, sweatsuits to work.
His kids are healthy, and his wife is hot. That's
what he has to say about that. So what did
the average man do yesterday after hearing that quote? I'm
assuming I would say, probably google his wife bingo and
you did.

Speaker 15 (01:39:24):
No.

Speaker 2 (01:39:25):
I didn't know about this until twelve two minutes ago.
I thought maybe you saw it on Twitter. No, I
actually saw it. I just didn't do it. Oh, it
is the worst Lisa Kelsey and she seems nice. That's
that's your that's your review of her. Yeah, what do
you want to say? You can give her one out

(01:39:45):
of ten? I mean, we do you give no? Life
is full of grading and grade in school with grade
on the gymnastics of events week gradeue I give her.
I give her three out of five wolves. What a

scrappy dude in the evaluation? When did I do that?
I remember it? But I could play the whole thing. Connor,
what is that from? What's the nickname? Okay, Fido like
a dog. You were trying to figure out Joey Librafito's nickname? Oh,

(01:40:30):
low berffo. That's terrible. Why do you still let me
on air?

Speaker 15 (01:40:36):
You know what?

Speaker 2 (01:40:36):
We have not been together on a Friday in quite
some time. Tomorrow I'm scared to death about tomorrow. Play
something from last week since he missed last Friday. Loaded up,
loaded up, Connor McGovern, do it best of. I feel
like we got some good material this week too.

Speaker 15 (01:40:49):
But.

Speaker 2 (01:40:51):
I really haven't caught myself. Are you serious? How you
listening to yourself? No, I don't listen to the show,
but listening to yourself? I have left over from last Oh,
tomorrow could be epic. Let's go by the way. I
gotta wake the strippers up at ten a m. Pacific
time tomorrow. Wait till one did the fake. No, the

(01:41:12):
Vegas strippers don't wait. They don't go to sleep. They
don't go to sleep. Yeah, they're like vampires. That's because,
but they're not listening to us. And the Houston strippers
to be walking up at nutes. We'll do that tomorrow.
Let's go to uh, George Memorial at twel twenty four
on seven High. George, Yeah, it's gonna Matt the Talk.

Speaker 17 (01:41:30):
Hey I heard I heard you at Twitter sent off
sides one of the get your get your opinion on
a couple of questions I have about Steve Kirk calling
the call irate.

Speaker 11 (01:41:38):
I r a te I believe so you spell it?

Speaker 8 (01:41:42):
So what do you think?

Speaker 2 (01:41:43):
Yeah, irate would be a Yeah, he was irate.

Speaker 12 (01:41:46):
He was.

Speaker 2 (01:41:46):
I don't think they called the callie right he was?
He was irate.

Speaker 11 (01:41:50):
Yeah, I'm not sure what that says.

Speaker 2 (01:41:52):
I'm just like sick. But I want to get your
opinion on a question.

Speaker 17 (01:41:55):
What do you think is more irate that the Warriors
they could just score one jump shot in the last
three minutes and they could have won. Or that Steve
Kerr said that a chokehold on the free throw line
eighty feet away was irate, Or that Steve curR said
he wanted to go to Republican State and about it

(01:42:15):
go win a championship, which.

Speaker 8 (01:42:17):
Is why I rate a B or C.

Speaker 2 (01:42:19):
What what are you smoking something? I'm pretty drunk.

Speaker 17 (01:42:25):
I'm drinking fireball like subway iced tea, but it's unsweet.

Speaker 2 (01:42:29):
So it's okay, okay, Subway subway unsweet tea with a Fireball?
Is that irate? Do I hear a girl back there
behind you?

Speaker 17 (01:42:38):
I mean she's a bird. I wouldn't call her. I
wouldn't call our girl, but she's definitely a bird. That's
a bird's name, Missus Thomas.

Speaker 2 (01:42:50):
What the hell was that?

Speaker 15 (01:43:07):
What?

Speaker 2 (01:43:12):
Fireball and subway Tea? Write his number? Now, let's call
after the show eight three two two four four? All right?
I mean all right, you don't get liberties? Yeah, right?
That right to get the number, copy will have to
give him a shout out passed out by the end
of the show, Fireball with the subway on sweet Tea,

(01:43:35):
incorrect usage of irate multiple times, multiple times. And then
he was worried about Kerr going to the Republican CID
of Nevada. Well, there's a lot of sets that we're
the Republican this last election. I don't know how to
respond to that, so I won't. Man, I don't even
know where to go from here. Man, I really don't

(01:43:56):
know what to say. I mean, I just don't get
what that was. It's a bird. What's a bird's name?
Missus Thomas? Okay, I mean there have been some strange
bird names. Huh. I mean you can't name every bird Polly.
This is twelve twenty six in the PM. That is

day drinking in full force on Thursday afternoon.

Speaker 15 (01:46:28):
Love it.

Speaker 2 (01:46:29):
I mean, we have been the day drinking leader for
sports radio for fourteen years in this marketplace. Absolutely no
doubt about it. We carried the flag. Yeah, we're the flagship.
We were the flagship for the flagship of drunk callers
around Houston, Texas in the midday. I mean, I can't
argue with that. I really can't. Let's say hi to
a new friend of the show. Alejandro Salona is with

(01:46:52):
w q a M. He covers the Miami Heat but
he also is a huge part of their very successful
Hook and Crowder radio show. He's also a host of
Uncentered on WQAM and he covers the Miami Dolphins as
part of that otto hundre. It's Matt and Ross here
on Sports Talk seven. Honey, how are you this afternoon?
Thanks for joining us?

Speaker 4 (01:47:10):
Yeah, Matt Ross of the intro there. I'm actually thrown
down a couple right now, so looking forward to this.

Speaker 2 (01:47:16):
Well, Seriously, if you're not burning a blunt while talking
to us, I want to hang up on this conversation immediately,
so you just feel free to do whatever you need
to do during your fifteen minutes with us here.

Speaker 4 (01:47:24):
Hey listen, man, you know how it's done in Miami.
And when we do that, we do everything el back
door of a bar. Everything goes down here.

Speaker 2 (01:47:32):
I love Miami when I call Rockets games down there
because it's and let me ask us, I don't know,
are you from there? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:47:39):
Born and raised in Miami.

Speaker 2 (01:47:41):
It's the great. And people say Vegas, New York and
Chicago are great people watching cities. I will proclaim your
hometown is because there are these smoke shows that walk
around town with guys that are thirty years older and
seventy five pounds heavier. That to me is the great
spectacle that is Miami.

Speaker 4 (01:47:59):
For there's nothing better than we just had art Basel,
which is like our big artsy artsy you know, week
long event and it's just like seventy five year olds
with TikTok influencers on their arm. And it's it's what
makes this city what it is.

Speaker 3 (01:48:16):
It really is.

Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
God love it, God love it all. Right. Let me
get a thought or two about something that Ross and
I think about all the time. When two attack of
Aloa plays the game of football. He's obviously a very
successful thrower, and is a good quarterback. We're still scared
to death that he's one hit away from being carried
off like a spatchelo on a football field. Does that
go through the mind of people that cover the Dolphins

(01:48:39):
like yourself and fans or is it you know what,
he's taking his own life into his own hands with
all the concussions of the last few years. He knows
what he's doing. Just let him play football every day.

Speaker 4 (01:48:50):
I think that's a conversation, you know, from the people
covering the team to even the people in the organization
and obviously the fan base. I think what Tua has
shown this year from the four games he missed is
that he is the most valuable player to the Dolphins.
With that being said, every conversation about Tua ends with

(01:49:11):
when he's available, when he's on the field. Everybody knows
that the lasting image of Tua Tongue Bailoa across every
football fans memory is him on the ground with his
hands cramping up.

Speaker 8 (01:49:27):
And nobody wants to see that.

Speaker 4 (01:49:28):
You know, nobody, nobody down here wants to see that.
No football fan wants to see that. So, you know,
I think he understands, and I think obviously the Dolphins
understand the nervesuing to play football, But at the end
of the day, I mean, you guys know as well
as anybody, these guys have a different outlook on life,
a different mindset. And I didn't think, you know, even

(01:49:50):
when he went down against Buffalo, there was a chance
he was going to give up the game. I just
didn't think there was a chance he would. And this
is what's the Dolphins have gotten themselves into. Unfortunately, they
finally found a quarterback post Dan Marino. That is good, right.

Speaker 8 (01:50:07):
I don't know if he's great.

Speaker 4 (01:50:09):
I don't know if he's a top five quarterback or
can be, but he's definitely better than the Clearings of
the world or the jay Feedlers of the world that
we suffered through for twenty years. And the back part
is that you're always worried.

Speaker 8 (01:50:23):
If that hit comes. But at least four games, which
is a.

Speaker 4 (01:50:27):
President the Dolphins said earlier this year when he had
to miss those games.

Speaker 8 (01:50:31):
Going on, ir Al.

Speaker 2 (01:50:33):
Hunter, you've got the Dolphins have at least four really
really good skilled position players, if not more than that
would to a being out there for a full season.
Would this be significantly better than the six and seven
record indicase or is just slightly better, because I still
am dumbfounded at how the Dolphins last week had to

(01:50:53):
hang around with the Jets for four quarters before finally
winning that game in overtime last Sunday.

Speaker 4 (01:50:58):
Yeah, I mean, of course, Aaron Rodgers big game against Dolphins,
and truthfully, DeVante Adams catches a pass at the end
of the game, stays in bounds, the Dolphins don't have
a chance to send it to overtime. I mean, the
margin is just so slim between a failed season and hey,
there's still a chance for this team to somehow back
themselves into the playoffs. The question is how good are

(01:51:19):
the Texans? Truthfully, and you know, maybe you guys can
give me some insight for my pregame show, but the
Dolphins very simple in the TUA era, in the Mike
mcdanuel era one PM game against a team that's good
but not great, They're gonna compete, They're gonna have a
chance to win, and it's gonna be the TUA show.
The Dolphins against elite teams, teams that are actual contenders.

(01:51:44):
Their record is awful last year, one in six segainst
playoff teams, and the one win was against the Dallas Cowboys,
who ended up losing in the first round at home.
So were they really a great team?

Speaker 11 (01:51:57):
Probably not.

Speaker 4 (01:51:58):
This year, that's been the exact same narrative, and it's
held true. Unfortunately for the Dolphins and for Tua Tongue
bai Loa when he's been out there. We can talk
about how well they played against the Bills on the road,
still lost the other day against Green Bay. All these
narratives swirling around the team that they're soft, they're mentally soft.
The former player call them out for being soft, and

(01:52:19):
Tua said he wants to go change narratives, and they're
down the double digits going into halftime. This team is
great when they're playing against mediocre teams in the National
Football League. This team has not, with Tua as the quarterback,
beaten legitimate contenders. And this is another opportunity now for
the Dolphins to go on the road and win a

(01:52:42):
game that's a a must win and be against the
team they failed to beat time and time again.

Speaker 2 (01:52:48):
Well, we have great news for you, Alejandro. The the
Texans aren't an elite contender, so maybe the Dolphins would
be okay this weekend, but just on your side. It's
similar here in Houston. It feels like when you go
up against the best the best that they're going to
short but they can beat and compete with decent to
below teams. But a lot of that can be talked
about as far as resting on coaching. And I was

(01:53:09):
going to ask you, what do you feel about Mike
mc McDaniel and what he has done there as a
head coach has strengthen his weaknesses.

Speaker 4 (01:53:17):
Yeah, I mean it's a tough question to answer because, Okay,
he brings this new perspective on Tua. Brian Flores clearly
had no interest into a tongue by low as a
franchise quarterback. They limited to US production. It was quite
obvious to everybody around this team. Mike McDaniel comes in
and from day one, I'm going to turn to his

(01:53:38):
career around and he did that. This is a team
that has not won a playoff game an organization twenty
four years now. I mean, I'm thirty years old. I
don't remember the Dolphin is in a playoff game or
excuse me, winning a playoff game. So his job was simple,
come in, win a playoff game.

Speaker 11 (01:53:56):
That's the bar.

Speaker 4 (01:53:57):
Most teams are looking to go to a super Bowl.
The bar was when a playoff game. In first two years,
playoff appearances fantastic, but you talk about, you know what,
we were just discussing their record against actual contenders. This year,
the expectations were playoff win or bust, period and I think,
you know, when you look back to those four games

(01:54:19):
that Tua was out, the Dolphins had one of the
worst offensive performances over a four week sample size that
I can remember. And that's saying a lot coming from
a person who has followed this Dolphins team, which just
hasn't had success on that side of the ball. So
you can point to the fact that McDaniel two consecutive
playoff berths, there's something to be said about that given

(01:54:41):
this franchisees inability to win consistently, and I think he
should be, you know, celebrated for that fact. But year three,
the Dolphins didn't have a contingency plan for a quarterback
that is constantly getting injured aside from concussions for Tua,
and when he wasn't out there, McDaniel showed no true
ability to actually have a plan in place to put

(01:55:04):
his team in a position to succeed, which is why
they went one to three and their only win was
against the New England Patriots, which might be the worst
team in the NFL. So it's still a question that's
being asked right now. There was a report today that
McDaniel would be on the hot seat if this Dolphin's
team doesn't end up making the playoffs. And it's simple,
even if they went out right now, there's no guarantee

(01:55:24):
that they're going to make the playoffs. They don't control
their own destiny. And I think the questions will continue
to be asked around here and the seat will only
grow hotter if the Dolphins still to make the playoffs
this season.

Speaker 2 (01:55:35):
Yeah, and part of that, as you mentioned, with Tagoloa down,
you figured you'd see a lot more Tyreek Hill. It's
been a slow season for him, but he's heating up
the last couple of weeks is to breakout here. And
what do you think were the reasons for his slow
start to the season.

Speaker 4 (01:55:50):
Yeah, so I think he had a much better performance
against the Jets. And I know, you know, the Jets
defense is good. I wouldn't say they're one of the
best in the league, but they're certainly top half of
the league. So I think you look at the fact
that he finally him and Waddle for the first time
since Week one both had over ninety yards. I mean,
the idea that we're saying that in going into Week

(01:56:11):
fourteen or coming out of Week fourteen is insane. Tyreek
Hill had almost one hundred yards receiving or more in
half of the Dolphins games last year. He almost had
two thousand yards receiving.

Speaker 15 (01:56:21):
It.

Speaker 4 (01:56:21):
He doesn't get hurt. He had a real shot at
it going to the final game of the season. Teams
this year have taken Tyreek and Jalen Waddle for that matter,
out of the game for the most part. They're playing
too high safety and they're forcing the Dolphins to beat
them underneath. You're going to see a lot of opportunities
for John hu Smith, the Dolphins tight end who over

(01:56:43):
the back half of the season since Tuas return, has
really been the focal part of the Dolphins offensive passing game,
and it hasn't been Tyreek and Waddle for the most
part this year. So can Tyreek Hill have a pickout
game against the Texans? Of course, He's Tyreek Hill. He
was voted the best play in the NFL for a
reason amongst his peers. But I wouldn't bet on it,

(01:57:04):
just from the fact that team seem to have kind
of figured out how to scheme him from beating you
over the top. And it sounds so simple, just play
two man deep and don't let him get behind you.
But last year teams were doing that. The Dolphins still
find a way to get him the ball. This year
just has not worked out. They haven't been able to
run the football either, less than one hundred yards combined

(01:57:26):
over the last two games. It seems as if to
a tongue of Iloa has to have a perfect game
throwing the ball to get this offense moving. As we
saw against the New York Jets. They want Tyreek and
Waddle to beat a focal point. It just hasn't been
consistent enough this year.

Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
Yeah, that to thort of the tight end three times
on a one drive to win that game when you
don't even go to him throughout the first four quarters
was simply amazing watching that end the way that it
did for I let you run. You're also part of
the Heat broadcast crew. I'll ask you a very simple
question to wrap up our conversation is Jimmy Butler. Remember
the Miami Heat one month from today.

Speaker 4 (01:58:01):
Yes, I think one month from today Jimmy Butler will
be I'm not, you know, breaking any news. I'm not
telling you it's to guarantee nothing would surprise me in
this day and age of the NBA. But going back
to that Sham's report, I genuinely don't believe anything changed
from the time Sham Sharanya reported this forty eight hours
ago to what everybody around this organization has been saying

(01:58:25):
since the Miami Heat were bounced in the first round
last year. Jimmy Butler was unavailable and pat Riley made
his statement very clear, which was, Jimmy needs to be
available more. He needs to shut his mouth and play basketball,
and they're not going to give him a contract extension,
which he very clearly once considering he has a player

(01:58:45):
option for next year at fifty two million dollars and
then nothing guaranteed after that. So I just think the
only thing that changed is the fact that the Miami
Heat are now picking up the phone to hear teams out.
But because of the cap constructs in the NBA right now,
it's very difficult for Jimmy Butler to have serious leverage

(01:59:06):
in this situation. And even if the Heat and Jimmy
decided that, hey, this is kind of run its course,
it's time to move on. As you guys know, the
Rockets right now are pretty much the only team, it seems,
on that list that can actually make a move. And
I don't know if Houston, considering what your general manager
has been saying, it's trying to make that kind of
move right now. So it's a complicated situation. There's a

(01:59:29):
lot at play, but no, I do not think anything
is currently imminent. I do not believe the Miami Heat
are actively or regressively shopping Jimmy Butler right now.

Speaker 2 (01:59:39):
Fifty two million dollar player option. I mean, that is
a sobering stat right there. Alejandro, thank you so much
for spending some time with us today. I look forward
to introducing myself to you when we come to your
place in February. Thanks for the time and to continued
success down in South Florida.

Speaker 4 (01:59:55):
Thanks guys anytime, looking forward.

Speaker 2 (01:59:57):
To take care now. That's all. Hndra Solana with wqa
M in Miami covers the Dolphins and the Heat for
that radio station. Rossie fifty two million dollar player option.
I'm gonna assume that he's gonna take that option. He's
gonna be like nine, Yeah, I don't think it's a

(02:00:18):
responsible thing for me to do. We'll see fifty two million. Yeah,
maybe can get a longer deal with more overall money
from somewhere else, but probably fifty two million. It's gonna
be an opt in, all right. Brian mctagger joins us

Dolphins football years old. He dropped a little age thing
on the show. How about that? You know what's wrong
with that? I think it's good. He sounds very polished
for thirty years old. Wish I was as polished at
thirty like he was. And we're still waiting for you
to get polished.

Speaker 8 (02:02:26):
I know.

Speaker 2 (02:02:27):
By the way, Uh, you're gonna want to listen believe
it or not? Today? Is it one fifty? Yes, you're
gonna be hosting it. I love when you host it.
Why okay, yeah, I'll leave one segment early jeez, but
I did it for you already. You know, I'd just
like you to show a little commitment, Matt, I did,
I wrote, I wrote it for you. How about us

(02:02:49):
both wearing rockets geared today? By the way, big win yesterday,
by the way, the temperatures in Vegas could be chilli.
You're gonna be okay. I won't go outside. What I Yeah,
you're gonna be at the blackjack table the entire time lead.
The temperature is seventy two. At the blackjack table, You'll
be fine. Yeah, I got that six forty five wake
up called tomorrow morning. I've never gotten up that early

(02:03:10):
in Vegas in my life. Well, at least to go

the show. Yeah, because we'll be on the air tomorrow
at eight am Pacific time. Struggles of Rochester. Your workday
is done at noon, you poor baby. I'll go to practice.
Are you for just to hang out? Let's see the guys.
What are you writing down? The sets? You're looking for
the high horns. I want to make sure I'm philosophically

(02:03:32):
in aligned with what the rockets are doing. Make sure
I know what's being called. No, Matt they're all about
toughness and want to I don't know if you're philosophically aligned. Okay,
by the way, congratulations to the mcnairs. Hannah. Yes, she's
in really good shit. Hanna's still kicking right. I don't
know if she's she's moving, but she's not necessarily losing.

(02:03:56):
Four evaluations were released today. Oh really, yes? Oh man,
now I gotta play. This is where you put me
on the spot, aren't you?

Speaker 11 (02:04:03):
I do?

Speaker 2 (02:04:04):
Would you like to value among the thirty NFL teams
where the Texans are and I'll give you plus her
minus three spots. That's a pretty wide gap there. What
number are they valued at among the thirty two NFL teams?
You get plus or minus? Then going with that, eight
point seventy five billion, Okay, they're the twelfth most valuable

(02:04:27):
NFL teams. Said twelfth. Ah, I thought there were tenth
last time or something. So it's gonna say twelve. Hannah
and col The franchise they own worth six point one
billion dollars. Good for that? Now again, and take somebody

(02:04:51):
to buy it for that. Yeah, it probably would sell
more for more than that. It feels like the team,
these teams are always sold above the Forbes valuations. That's
why Hannah's always in a good mood. Now, sometimes she's
in a pissy mood. When when's the lost times are
in a pissy mood and cal shows up with barbecue
sauce on his shirt to the formal dinner. You mean,

(02:05:12):
like a Wednesday when people are bad mouthing the Texans
on air. She doesn't like that. Oh, she gets those
people fired, well, she tries to. Yeah, she keeps the receipts.
Mm hmm, six point one billion dollars. She stares lovingly
in those eyes of HD Calhoun. Is that what his

(02:05:34):
name is? H? Calhoun? D Calhoun is one of the letters.
I don't remember what the D is for. Oh, she
does dollars. I that you're going towhere else I know
you thought of, but you know what, give me a
little credit once in a while. Yeah, dollar cal McNair,
I'm glad you clean cleared that up for us. All

(02:05:54):
it was, uh, I looked it up before I found it.
I can't remember. Now doesn't matter. He doesn't, She doesn't care.
What it stands for, the family is Daniel? Why did
he go from Daniel to Calhoun? Calhoun? Something He sounds
like he should be on a smoke in the band
at four Handah, we were twelve on the Forbes list. No,

(02:06:20):
that's not that's not Hannah Gump. We are doing great.
We need to be higher. That's why he needs to
do more barbecues and more hot dog grilling? Can I
have a second slice of cobbler tonight? It'd be cool
if he said, look, everybody, I saw my value. My

(02:06:41):
franchise worth six billion dollars. Everybody that comes to this
Sunday's Texans game gets one free hot dog. It's not
liquid cash, it's just what it's valued at. So what
do you think is an? I always ask you these
things and you don't have the answer, nor do why
if we were to pulse out forty dollars off the
McNair debit card? Okay, what do you think that is?

Speaker 8 (02:07:00):
There?

Speaker 2 (02:07:01):
Is the receipt that comes out shows you with your balances?
Is there are there enough zeros in it? I would
hope that they don't have too much money in a
check account, Matt, you gotta put that into savings, hedge funds, ETFs, bitcoin.
Do they have a debit card? I would imagine they
have no. They have black cards, so there's not They
don't get cash out like we My wife and I
have a kind of a little strategy.

Speaker 15 (02:07:22):
We have.

Speaker 2 (02:07:23):
Anything under one hundred dollars, well use our debit card.
Anything over one hundred, we use our credit card. Why,
I don't know. Just keeps things budgeted, I get. Don't
argue with me. I'm not arguing. I'm asking you why.
I don't know. I would like to put everything on
the credit card and then pay it all. Let me
call missus Thomas on this. Let's get her on the horn. No,
she's a bird. She's not available right now. But is
that crazy? He's available? So if she's not with Georgia Memorial. Yeah, really,

(02:07:48):
But do the mcnais have a debit card? I will say, yeah,
it's dusty. You're saying they have one, but it's it's
in a way in the back of her purse. Put
everything on the credit card, get them points in them
cash back man. Yeah. Les Alexander used to when you
own the Rockets, would put everything on a credit card
so you get the points. Yeah, why wouldn't you. I
would do the exact same thing. Absolutely, you have like

(02:08:08):
seventy billion schmnded Miles, Yeah, you would, May, I think
you own a seven eighty seven by that point, well
Tilan does, so what's that that way? All right, let's

at Ross. It has been busy. We have gone to Miami,
we have gone to parts of no We've gone to
somebody's house where the birds. We moved to North Dakota,
Las Vegas. We think we took one Houston call on
the Rockets, right, I think a couple and then we
had somebody call, Oh, it was like he ain't wants
the Rockets in a long time. Then they asked about

(02:09:56):
the contracts, Yes on the Astros, and you know what,
why not? We don't need to speculate anymore. We've got
the insider with us. Let's go. He's with us every
Thursday at one o'clock dor in the baseball season, and
we're happy to have Brian mctagger joining us in the
winter meetings. Brian, first of all, you are missed. Secondly,
how crazy has it been speculation wise? You've been going
to these things for a long time. Is this the

(02:10:18):
most activity in terms of heard this, heard that that
you have been around in a long time When it
revolves around the Astros.

Speaker 11 (02:10:24):
Yeah, around the Astros, I would say yes.

Speaker 18 (02:10:26):
I mean, you know, typically there's all kinds of you know,
stuff thrown out or nonsense, and but yesterday, uh, you know,
wandering the floor of the hotel, the lobby, and every
time I turn around, I'm you know, talking to a
different agent or someone with another team, and everyone's like,
what are you hearing?

Speaker 2 (02:10:46):
What are you hearing?

Speaker 18 (02:10:47):
And everyone's trying to find out what everybody else knows,
other reporters as well.

Speaker 11 (02:10:51):
So when there's buzz like that, there means usually something
is going on.

Speaker 18 (02:10:55):
And it definitely seemed like there's momentum building towards Kyle
Tucker being traded now and you know Bregman's still out
there as well. You know, two different, two separate situations,
but the Astros are Dana Brown thought they were close
to getting something done the other day.

Speaker 11 (02:11:12):
So the way continues, though nothing's done yet.

Speaker 2 (02:11:15):
All right, back to the speculation on Kyle for a second.
I always said, and maybe there wasn't a moment in time,
but obviously when you had the arbitration of a few
years back in the Astros loss, so there were some
resentment on the Kyle Tucker side, and also Kyle Tucker
knows the landscape of what the Astros have done. Do
you think there was a conversation ever between Kyle and

(02:11:38):
Jim or Dana in the last say six months it said, look,
I know you're looking for the mega deal. You know
that we don't offer the mega deals. That when the
season settles down and everybody's done in their off season,
we're going to go to the winter meetings and really
try to see what we can do in finding you
a new place for twenty twenty five to help you
figure out what you're gonna do for the long term.
Or do you think this was always just something that

(02:12:00):
was kind of brought up in passing conversation, But because
there are more media, there more people talking about it,
this all of a sudden has gained some steam.

Speaker 14 (02:12:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 18 (02:12:08):
I don't know if they ever had those conversations. I mean,
They tried to extend Tucker previously and he you know,
it didn't happen. So I think there's always been a
belief that that Tucker was going to explore free agency,
and it came to that point the Astros weren't going
to resign him. And and now you see Juan Soto
getting that crazy money and Kyle Tucker next year could

(02:12:29):
be the you know, one of the biggest free agent
names on the market. You know, a guy with fifty
homer power with more tools and Soto all around. And
so he sees that and and he's going to, you know,
want four hundred five hundred million, and the Astros see
that as well, and you know, the Astros are just like,
let's get something for him. And you know, I don't
blame him. They could get a couple of big league players,

(02:12:51):
a couple of prospects, maybe not have to pay him
fifteen plus million in arbitration this year, and they won't
lose him next year. I mean, they lost you know, Korea,
they lost Springer. Didn't get anything for them. You know,
I can't remember if they got qualifying offers or not.
Maybe they got a draft pick, but you know, their
farm system is in the position where they say, Okay,
we'll let Tucker walk and we'll just plug this guy in.

(02:13:13):
They just they're just not there. They need to and
they have so many questions on the big league club.
They could sort of fill both of those questions by
trading one guy and free up some payroll.

Speaker 11 (02:13:23):
It makes a lot of sense.

Speaker 2 (02:13:25):
Where do you think that puts us Brian just in
kind of as far as an era of this asterisk team,
there was obviously a very hard rebuild. Then there's the
championship era. Is this seeming like a soft reset and
they want to contend in a couple of years, Like philosophically,
where is this driving this organization the next couple of years?

Speaker 18 (02:13:45):
Well, I don't think they'll ever rebuild under Jim Crane.
I mean he sort of said that. I would say
maybe a retool. I mean, you know, they could they
could trade Tucker, get a couple of pieces and still
sign a couple of more players. It still won the division.
I mean, they're the division's not great. I mean it
took what eighty eight wins to win the division last year.
So you know, you know, Rangers just resigned to Yvaldi,

(02:14:06):
and you know, Angels have made some moves, so still
there's a lot can happen. But it's not like trading
Tucker and you know you're you're falling into the abyss
now there. They could still be really good next year.
They're not the twenty nineteen Astros and they might not
be again unless they, you know, go through a rebuilt process.
But I would call it more of a retool. It

(02:14:26):
might look different, it might not feel fun for Astros.
Fans of Tucker and Bragman aren't there anymore. But you know,
they could be a different a new face at third,
a new face and right, a new face and center,
a new starting pitcher, and that could still be a
pretty good team if you, you know, especially if you
build it around pitching a little bit.

Speaker 2 (02:14:42):
Brian mctagger MLB dot Com with us here on Sports
Talk seven ninety and a man has kind of been
somewhat forgotten, at least with all the talk that's been
going on. What do you think about from Bervaldez. Do
you think there's much of a market for him? Could
he possibly be moved or do you think I think
he is still in an Astros uniform Come opening day

(02:15:03):
when we.

Speaker 11 (02:15:03):
Met with Dana Brown Monday in Dallas. He did bring
up Farmer's name.

Speaker 18 (02:15:07):
I guess, you know, I'm sure you know, as a guy,
they would consider trading as well.

Speaker 11 (02:15:11):
It is something they consider, you know, sort of the
same boat as Tucker.

Speaker 18 (02:15:15):
If they do, they and they want to compete, I
mean that you're gonna have to go get a starting
pitcher or two because he's your race, he's your horse.

Speaker 11 (02:15:22):
I think it's less likely he gets traded.

Speaker 18 (02:15:25):
But also a guy that you know, if he has
a really solid twenty twenty five, he's gonna make a
ton of money on a large contract, and probably the
Astros wouldn't have a ton of interest in bringing him back,
so they could trade him and get something as well.
But you know, baseball is about pitching, and he still
looks pretty good at the top of your rotation.

Speaker 11 (02:15:45):
If you trade Tucker, you know, you free up that
fifteen million or so he's going to make an arbitration.

Speaker 18 (02:15:51):
Valdez is probably gonna make eighteen million, so he's gonna
cost a lot as well.

Speaker 11 (02:15:55):
So I don't think you necessarily have to trade both.

Speaker 18 (02:15:57):
But you know, I think there's a chance, but a
little less likely that that Brownberg gets traded at this point.

Speaker 2 (02:16:03):
Brian, when it comes to Bragman, what's he waiting for
right now? Do you think Scott Boris is a type
of person that says, all right, we're calling a deadline
in make your best offer, let's go. Or is there
any sort of waiting game that we're in right now?

Speaker 11 (02:16:16):
Well, still in the waiting game. I don't know where
Alex's mind is.

Speaker 18 (02:16:18):
I don't think he's the guy that wants to wait
forever and you know, get into January and February not
knowing where he's going. I heard yesterday when I was
on in the lobby that the Red Sox for the
team to watch at that point, which you know, makes total,
absolute sense. Putting him at third base there and playing,
you know, with the Green Monster. You know, that would
be tough for Astros fans to see. But you know,

(02:16:41):
I don't know if the Yankees are involved, but uh,
you know, I think I think we'll have a Bregman
decision sooner than later.

Speaker 11 (02:16:47):
It's not going to drag on, you know.

Speaker 18 (02:16:49):
I still I still think there's a shot he could
wind up here, probably a small shot, Dana Brown said Tuesday,
they were, you know, optimistic, they could get something done
with bregmant I.

Speaker 11 (02:16:58):
You know, I'm not sure where that comes from.

Speaker 18 (02:16:59):
So well, you know, maybe the market's not there for
him and and his his his offer of value comes
down and the Astros can raise theirs a little bit
and there's some kind of match.

Speaker 11 (02:17:08):
But I still think that's unlikely.

Speaker 2 (02:17:10):
When you when Dana tells tells you stuff like that,
do you think it's just a straight situation of we
gave him an initial offer you reported last week six
one fifty six. Are they holding back a little bit
of money or are they saying we think we've been
able to figure out what your value is. If you
can't find something better than a was six one fifty six,
then we're always here for you.

Speaker 11 (02:17:31):
I think there might be a little little room in that.

Speaker 18 (02:17:34):
I mean they he was asked if they made him
another offer beyond the six you know, one fifty six,
and he didn't say. But I think the Astros put
a lot of thought into what he would what his
value is, what he's worth, knowing that there might be
a team or multiple teams that could offer him more.
But you know, maybe the market's not there for him,

(02:17:54):
and that maybe if the Astros up their offer by
another year, they get close to a match and something
can get done. Still, I find it hard to believe
the Astros would go longer than six years to a
player who's in his early thirties, even if it is
Alex Bregman, somebody that everybody loves and has been a
cornerstone player at I just don't think the money's gonna

(02:18:15):
match up.

Speaker 2 (02:18:16):
All right. Last question, if Bregnant moves, which I anticipate
that happening, what do the Astros do right away for
satisfying third base while at the same time maybe still
looking for some first base help.

Speaker 11 (02:18:28):
Yeah, well, I think we go back to Tucker.

Speaker 18 (02:18:29):
You know, if they trade Tucker, maybe they get a
third baseman and an outfielder from another team. You know,
we've all seen the You know, Jorge Polanco is somebody
they're interested in to come in and play third base.
He's not Alex Bregman. And whoever they put in right
field is not Cayl Tucker. But they could still add
more pieces on top of those guys. So, you know,

(02:18:51):
I think the Astros need to make a decision at
some point sooner or later on Bregman, whether they think
he's gonna sign or not and say, Okay, we're gonna
do this. And they did start having post life without Bregman,
post Bregmant conversations at their winter meetings. I think they
realized this is a long shot, and I think they're
they're sort of starting to formulate plans to move on

(02:19:11):
and if they trade Tucker, they might get a third
basement in return and close the door on Bregmant. And
they started twenty twenty five with some new faces.

Speaker 2 (02:19:19):
Did the Astro Suite provide delicious snacks and alcoholic beverages
for the reporters?

Speaker 8 (02:19:27):
No, it is.

Speaker 11 (02:19:28):
It's not that exciting. I mean, we go in there,
there's a you know, a gaggle media.

Speaker 2 (02:19:32):
We all sat on chairs.

Speaker 11 (02:19:34):
It was like a big sweep.

Speaker 18 (02:19:35):
We all sat on chairs like a sort of an
U shaped angle, and Dana Brown sat in the middle,
and it was you know, everyone's kind of sitting back
with their legs crossed and their notepads out and just
you know, peppering questions to Dana. And then after about
ten minutes or so, we leave. But no, no snacks,
no drinks. It was a few years ago. We were
leaving and Jeff Luno offered us a bottle of wine

(02:19:57):
that was sitting on the floor that he didn't want,
but uh.

Speaker 2 (02:20:01):
I passed on that. Ok, Hey, safe travels back. Thank
you for the information, and uh, if we don't, we
may call you one more time. I mean seriously, bragman
moves tuck against move. We're gonna you're you're you're on
the scene. We know you know people, We're gonna have
to call you one more time.

Speaker 11 (02:20:15):
You understand that, right, I will be here and I
will answer.

Speaker 2 (02:20:18):
You know that you're the best. Brian McTaggart, MLB doc Oh,
I forgot to ask Brian, do you hear about a
new quarterback? Mister mctagg I was about to say, I
couldn't believe this didn't come up.

Speaker 11 (02:20:27):
I know, I know, I know, very exciting, very very exciting.

Speaker 18 (02:20:33):
I mean, uh he's been a rough couple of years
for uh quarterbacks, so uh, you know, give Willie Fritz
some time. I think I think he knows what he's doing.
And if they can uh add a couple of receivers
in the portal, let's go, let's uh you know, let's
uh big twelves wide open.

Speaker 11 (02:20:48):
They can win it.

Speaker 2 (02:20:49):
Just say what everybody's thinking we're the next Big twelve champions,
peering to the story.

Speaker 10 (02:20:53):
I like it.

Speaker 18 (02:20:54):
We are Arizona State was picked last day. Yeah that hey,
it is completely wide. O. My money's on the cooks. Oh,
it's always on the coups. Thank you, friend, We appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (02:21:10):
Yeah you don't believe that. I hope it's not too
much money. We need some ani O money. Cut the check,
both of y'all. No, we don't make that kind of money.

Speaker 11 (02:21:21):
Let's go.

Speaker 2 (02:21:22):

Back to Matt Thomas and Ross Viial on Sports Talk
seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (02:22:43):
All right, this will come as no surprise sports Survey,
but if you're a Houston Rockets fan, it would like
to go check out the Vegas nc NBA Cup semifinal games.
Tickets are very reasonable. Yeah, I heard that they what's
the opposite of skyrocketing plummeted? The term I saw from
a rash Markazi is the word plummet dive bombed. They

(02:23:06):
were hoping for Lakers, Lakers, they were hoping for any
California team because this seas to get to Vegas Olden state.
They got none of that. If you want to go
see Bucks Hawks, why the first game is twenty nine dollars.
If you want to go see thunder Rockets thirty nine dollars?
Is it like a twin billing? Can you buy tickets

(02:23:28):
to both? It sounds like to me, you have two
different You gotta leave because the first game I think
is like at two or two thirty and they play
in the sphere correct, and they make it a basketball no,
And the U two is the halftime show. No, oh,
no Shares at halftime. This may be a weird statement
to make, but I'm gonna make it. I don't even

(02:23:51):
know what you're gonna say. And I know, go ahead.
If we were young, if we were young men in
nineteen seventy five, okay, we'd have three people on our list, ok,
Wells and Margaret and Share Okay, agreed. You feel like
I have no idea. That's before I was born. I'll

(02:24:13):
take your word for it. Okay, I just throw it
out there. I was like, oh with this, oh to
have some share. They're very young still, you're like sixty
percent under thirty, right, that's true. All right? So box
Hawks is twenty nine dollars, thunder Rockets thirty nine dollars,
and the NBA Cup is seventy nine dollars. The Final,

(02:24:33):
the Final, If you want to go Tuesday, I'm good.
There's how I'm gonna have to have you venmo me
some money. What Friday, Saturday, Jack five days in Vegas,
the Rockets weak Oklahoma City. You need to venmo me dues.
Oh I do It would be the last time I
do it, though. Ohay, Ronald's going to join us tomorrow
at one o'clock. Maybe we'll have him join the league.

(02:24:55):
Actually no, he's gonna. I don't want that under any
circumstance making waiver pickups at four thirty am. All right, So,
so far on the show today, we've had a call
from Vegas, Yes, North Dakota, uh huh. We had one
from Houston, yes on the Rockets, and we have a
jagger from Dallas. He didn't We didn't talk rockets with him.
I'm talking about a guy from Dallas, a guy from Dallas.
And then we had the man with his bird. You

(02:25:15):
even memorial. Yeah, let's go to Steven in Los Angeles
at one twenty four. I bet Steven's gonna make the
way to Vegas.

Speaker 11 (02:25:22):
Hi Steven, Hey, guys, thanks for making my call.

Speaker 8 (02:25:26):
They taking my call.

Speaker 19 (02:25:29):
First of all, Matt, I just got to say that
last uh that last second call you made was elite,
very much, so much fun to listen to you. Uh
may made the Rockets game a lot of fun to watch.
Uh yeah, So, I mean I don't really have anything
crazy to uh to ask. I just was enjoying that

(02:25:49):
Rockets game last night.

Speaker 11 (02:25:51):
I mean just it was incredible.

Speaker 19 (02:25:54):
I don't think Golden State will play another game this
year where they have that many shot clock violations. The
one thing that you know, we all want, of course,
is just this team just needs like a dead ass shooter.

Speaker 8 (02:26:07):
It's just so obviously I don't know where.

Speaker 19 (02:26:09):
It's going to come from, who it's going to be,
but it just feels like this is like the that
is like the missing ingredient on this team, because I
think the helld Golden State to no point. I mean
I don't think they scored it like the last two
minutes of that game last night, which was incredible and Uh,
it's just all the components are there, it just they
can't shoot, and that's like what's holding them back from

(02:26:32):
being elite.

Speaker 2 (02:26:34):
Steven, It's uh, it's a fair conversation point. And Rossi
and I talked about this. For the Rockets are winning
sixty games without a knockdown, drag out shooter, without an
absolutely unbelievable perimeter threat. Now, some days is Jabbari, some
days it's Jaalin, some days it's Fred, some days it's
so Tari. But it's not the same person every night,

(02:26:57):
and that does present problems for other teams defense. But
at the end of the day, Steven, I think you'd
agree with me on this. You want one guy, whether
it's a fourteen minute guy off the bench or a
guy that starts for you to place twenty six, that
is that perimeter threat. And they were kind of hoping
Reed Chepper would be that guy. At this point that
has not happened, and Cam wentmore got such off to

(02:27:18):
such a bad start, boys that he's gone to the
G League and hasn't been seen since he got recalled.
Now he didn't play last night. Yeah, but I mean,
don't you agree with Steven though this is a team
that is in desperate need if they're going to make
that super leap, But what do you have to give
up in order to get that guy? And who is that?
I don't know. You were hoping it was going to
develop in house. You're hoping Jalen Green to be better

(02:27:39):
and and Jabari Smith Junior has been better. Fred Vanvliet's
going to shoot better. I promise you got But I mean,
can you, Stephen, can you give me who do you
predictably a forty percent three point shooter by the end
of the season. I didn't say that. Hey, I'm I'm
trying to be positive. Say fifty, we're at it, So
would you say seventy five? Yeah, you're rude.

Speaker 19 (02:28:02):
I mean, I love this team, but I don't see
anybody currently on it that's going to shoot that well
from the three point. I mean, I think, you know,
Reid is probably like a year or two away from
being that. You know that that shooter that we're all
talking about. And you know cam Is you know who
knows with him? He's still so young at twenty years old.
I mean the great thing about this team is that

(02:28:23):
they are they are loaded with depth, and I think
that they are in a position where you could part
with a couple of pieces and still keep.

Speaker 8 (02:28:33):
The core intact.

Speaker 19 (02:28:35):
I'm just looking forward to seeing this. I didn't have
any plans to go to Vegas, but maybe I might
because this seems a lot of fun to watch the phys.

Speaker 2 (02:28:42):
Thanks Steve, appreciate it. Yeah, I mean that's the that's
the hard part right now, Rossie, if you're a fell Stone,
is that you love the vibe right now? This is
a young team that's all growing up. It's still a
young team, even though you've got Dylan Brooks and you've
got Fred Vanvliet playing major minutes. But you need a

(02:29:04):
jump shooter and can you wait? Can you wait for
Reid to have an offseason in an NBA world and
do that? Of course you can't. You're not winning the
championship this year. I mean, yeah, I don't team. I
don't think you move up a stage. You know, what
is it the stages that that Timon wanted the last
year in phases stage is whatever, same difference. Phases are
moving up and the next phase would be do you

(02:29:26):
go get a superstar? Because this team is full of
really good players, but there's no definitive star to really
shake things up to really put the fear in God
in teams in the NBA. And what would you have
to give up in return? You cannot trade out be
or jailing this season, And I said, don't think they
would have wanted to treat either one of them unless

(02:29:46):
it was a deal they couldn't refuse. Everybody else could
be moved, but if Reid could somehow figure out And
maybe it's just too you know, even though we're still
not even the halfway point of the season. Maybe it's
just a learning growth campaign for him. Yeah, and maybe
expectations are a little higher than they should because he
is a number three overall pick. But it also was,

(02:30:07):
I mean, roundly talked about as the worst draft in
possibly NBA history at the top of it. So where
would he have be picked in any other given year.

Speaker 11 (02:30:15):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (02:30:16):
Yeah, Well, again, if we're going back twenty five years ago,
he's a sophomore in Kentucky going in throwing his first
accounting class today, Right, it's just short that somebody go
for him. Is Kentucky, that's true, but it also Kentucky's
the leader of the one and done too, so they
weren't surprised. I was you going to class in Kentucky
since probably the fifties. Can you imagine being a Kentucky athlete?

(02:30:36):
Just go and play basketball and if you go to class,
no big woll but you're gonna wind up living us anyway.
We're not really really worried about you. I used to
when I was in college. I used to pick classes
that attendants didn't count as part of the grade. Like
if you showed up, he showed up, you went, and
you went. Really yeah, I used to pick the biggest
class at h I taught people things that you of age.

(02:31:00):
I was in the business. I was teaching them things
that they were like, oh, like the biggest problem I
had with U of age broadcasting back then, this is
going back to late nineteen nineties when I was in school, okay,
was that they were still using record players. I said,
nobody's using record players anymore. What do you mean, met
They're back now, but not on a major radio state.
Radio stations are not playing songs of records At the time.

(02:31:21):
Back in the nineties, it was using CDs and you
would turn the CD to a certain number and you
hit the play button and go from there. Yes, now
everything is digitalized so it doesn't you know, they're not
using CDs anymore. But I told Dr Musberg, I said, muss,
Doctor Musburger, Yes he is a cousin to Brent. Really yeah, wow,
said we got to update things. We're trying to get

(02:31:42):
people to think that this is a great communication school.
Using a record player to play music is just absurd.
He was like, well, it's not about the record play,
it's about using just another piece of audio equipment. I'm like, okay, whatever,
and you were speaking into ten cans. I believe correct.
Stop it now. The one great thing we did when
I was there, it was I had a television class

(02:32:02):
and it was just kind of like mass media in general.
And professor says, I gotta tell you something. There's this
thing called HDTV that is gonna revolutionize how we watch television.
It's basically gonna be able to see the whites of
the eyes of people. You're gonna have things crystal clear.
Out'm like, this guy's nuts any ways talking about it,
and he was right. I learned HD at you of

(02:32:23):
H at you of H. I was gonna say down
on the D, but that wasn't not down in the
D and you were not UHD it was uh MC yeah,
main campus. That's right, all right. One thirty one on
Sports Talk seven ninety. Let's replay against Steve Kerr and
how much he was so pleased with the officiating a
last night's game. We'll do that in just a moment.
One Sports Talk seven ninety Rockets coming along.

Speaker 12 (02:32:46):
From b Hey, everybody, this is Craig Ackerman from the
Rockets broadcast team. Thankfully, and finally I am socially distancing
myself for Matt Thomas.

Speaker 15 (02:32:55):
Wait, bye bye to your cash cow because it's leaving
the past year.

Speaker 2 (02:32:59):
Now back to your show. Step back, straight out, three
up back, I miss rebound loose van Bleed and Peyton
and the bonus still loose t scramp, call of time out,
please the three seconds left. We have a foul. First,
a foul has been called. Oh my goodness, great Kennedy

(02:33:21):
is gonna call a foul. That's penalty and that's a penalty. Wow,
kminga well a chance with the Rockets to tire or
take the lead. It's a bonus situation. There was a
mad scrabble at the free throw line. Jump the kaminga fouls.
Jalen Green three point five seconds left, ninety to eighty nine.

(02:33:46):
Golvid state first blush reaction, ROSSI, after you found you
find out that Jayalen Green is going to the free
throwing do you think he's gonna make both? Miss both
one to one and two? What were you thinking? I
thought we were going overtime. If I'm being honest, I'm
happy he made them both, and then I was deathly

(02:34:08):
afraid and scared of what was gonna happen after that.
Free throws didn't bother me. It was the time out
three and a half seconds left. I'm gonna be honest.
I didn't even watch the first one. I whisked out,
didn't even want to look. What'd you do? I just
looked up and listened for the crowd. Well, the crowd,
I mean, everybody in the rockets bench is like shut up. Yeah,

(02:34:28):
I saw that Cam Whitmore was leading the charge, trying
to get everybody to quiet down. He wasn't being very
polite about it, was he It's fine. I mean, oh,
I'm sorry, you can't make a free throw with the
crowd being loud and get out of here. He made
them both. Yeah, they were both pure, very nice. He's
been shooting what is he eighty seven percent? I think
from great Yeah, he's good season. Yeah, but that was

(02:34:49):
he'd only scored four points in the second half. He
had zero in the first quarter, I believe, eight in
the second, in the second two in the I think
he had four in the four something like that. Somewhere
in that range one field goal to free throws. It's inconsistent.
Jalen Green, stop me if you've heard this before. All right,
so the game ends. I was seeing the Rockets win
the best scaring the final seven points. Since Steve Kerr

(02:35:09):
goes to the podium like he does up every game, yes,
and wants to say it was a very competitive game,
tough luck loss. We'll gather, we'll regroup, go back and
play Dallas later into this weekend and be just fine.
Right is how it went ross basically all right here
it is.

Speaker 6 (02:35:23):
I've never seen a loose ball foul on a jump
ball situation eighty feet from the basket with the game
on the line. I've never seen that. I think I
saw in college one time thirty years ago. Never seen
it in the NBA. That is unconscionable. I don't even
understand what just happened. You know, loose ball diving on

(02:35:48):
the floor eighty feet from the basket, and you're gonna
give guy two free throws to decide the game.

Speaker 2 (02:35:53):
When people are scrambling.

Speaker 6 (02:35:54):
For the ball, just give them a timeout, give them
a timeout, and let the players decide the game. That's
how you officiate, especially because the game was a complete
wrestling match.

Speaker 2 (02:36:08):
So I didn't see I saw Bill Kennedy come in late.
He was clearly not right on top of the play.
But if there was a scrum at the free throw line,
eighty feet from the free throw line would be the
baseline on the other end of the floor. It's a
quarter is ninety four feet in. The free throw line
is fifteen feet from there. So you're telling me that

(02:36:29):
all that was going on, Bill Kennedy was eighty feet away.
That far away. I think it was a slight bit
of embellished there, of an exaggeration from our good friend
Steve Kerr, who we are not going to weep for
no or not. The folks at TNT wanted to talk
about the Rockets win last night, Ernie throwing up a
softball as he normally does to bring up conversation about

(02:36:51):
this young pesky Rockets basketball team, and how much fun
it was. It is either defense step up and here's
Ernie with Kenny, a little bit of shack and a
lot of Charles Barklay. Hey, I pressed with the Houston Rockets.

Speaker 9 (02:37:04):
They don't have any idea how to play basketball a defense.
They yeah, but you they played the game strictly on talent.
They should have won that game. But they got so
much more talent than the Warriors. But there's one of
the reason I say they got a great record. They're
not ready for prime time because the reffs had to
give them this game tonight. They got a bright future.

(02:37:24):
But man, they gonna have to learn discipline. They're gonna
learn to take care of the ball. They're gonna have
to learn shots. Election you call of that to be
said for teams. For a team that has like three
guys under twenty three, And I know that started, but
sometimes it happens faster. You ask Kenny and shot like
sometimes it comes together. Like they got a lot of
talent and they can't play like they used to be,

(02:37:48):
like they relevant. They got a terrific coach. Now they
got to learn, like we got to take care of
the ball. We got to top taking bad shots like
Jalen Green.

Speaker 2 (02:37:59):
He almost had not once again they didn't. He got
the double digits. Not ready for prime time. I mean,
it's not the prettiest thing. It's ridiculous and lame. And
he's not watching the Rockets and what is he How
do they have so far and away more talent than

(02:38:20):
the Golden State Warriors. That's a ridiculous statement. I mean,
Kaminga is becoming a star in this league. Curry is
still showing no signs of really slowing down much. Draymond
Green continues to be very good. Buddy healed is a
three point machine. Eleven points in the third quarter. It's stupid.
I'm so I'm gonna say it's stupid. It's stupid. Takes
from from Charles Barkley. He's not watching the Rockets and

(02:38:41):
he doesn't know what he's talking about. So when NBA
pundits tell me they're tired of seeing three point shots
all the time being taken and the Rockets do it
different ways, I mean, men Thompson never gonna be considered
a perimeter three. He goes to the lane, he works hard,
he gets reversed laps. Yeahoprin Shan gun with a fade away. Again,
it's sometimes it's it'thethically not pleasing to watch the Rockets

(02:39:01):
shoot because they're not a great shooting team collectively as
a group, but they get the job done. I mean,
what do the folks want? Do you want excitement? Or
do you want three point shots? Do you want dunks?
Do you want lamps? Do you want defense? Do you
want offensive? I feel like that all of us is
sports media and maybe fans to a certain extent, just
never seem to be happy with whatever the product's being

(02:39:22):
given in front of us. Well, you're saying we like
to complain, kind of yes, and that's what Charles did.
What is he even talking about? Way more talented than
the Warriors? Don't take care of the ball? False statement
after false statement? What game is he watching? Oh, he's
not watching the games. No, he's probably on his phone.

(02:39:46):
I think I don't know what he's doing. He's at
the blackjack table. They don't have blackjack in Atlanta. Probably
should make it a go, even in a better you's
got a private game hooked up. All right, let's play
believe it or not? Today? What's happened to run five?
Oh my god? We forgot Rotten five. Well, at least
I wrote it tomorrow tomorrow. Why don't you remind me?
I told you, And I'm usually pretty good about what
we do on the show, so I mean, oh, then

(02:40:10):
I feel terrible. We had to toss to the intro
and everything. Yeah, I didn't. You guys didn't remind me.
I'm serious, that's a total mistake on my part. Rotten
five tomorrow wrote rode over tomorrow. Let's go now to
finish at Ross. Now for the stories tomorrow, Yes, hell
here not tomorrow. I wrote, is going to be I'm

(02:40:32):
gonna be in this a certain western city. I won't
say where it is, kinda keep it as a secret,
all right.

Speaker 13 (02:40:38):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (02:40:39):
I wrote Believe It or Not? Because Ross is gonna
do it now. When Ross does Believe or Not, it
is a an amazing audio event. Why because I feel
like there's a good vibe when you do it. Okay,
I'm not even it's very googleable today. It involves US ambassadors, yes,
and other people. That seems seem fair.

Speaker 11 (02:40:57):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 2 (02:40:58):

(02:42:33):
we continue along on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
without Matt Thomas for now. He had to duck out.
He's flying up with the Houston Rockets to Las Vegas.
He'll be broadcasting from there tomorrow. As they won last night,
they lifted the curse. They snapped the streak fifteen losses
in a row to the Golden State Warriors. They won

(02:42:53):
the game, it was a late tip, the building was electric,
it felt good. And now they're onto the semifinals again.
It's the Oklahoma City Thunder, Adam Silver and the NBA
probably not happy that there's not marquee teams left, at
least in name. I mean, if you like basketball, you
should be happy about the Rockets and the Thunder. That

(02:43:14):
should be a good game. You should be happy about
the Hawks and the Bucks. In theory that's a good game.
But no big brands. You're not bringing in as many casuals.
So I guess I should say I understand why the
NBA would rather have some of the other big name teams.
But guess what, the big name teams didn't win. The
Rockets are in and they play the Thunder Saturday at

(02:43:35):
seven point thirty here on Sports Talk seven to ninety,
