Speaker 1 (00:02):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Show, TATO three at h Town.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Good morning, and welcome to a Friday edition of The
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. This is Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Do people in Dallas throw out the d Maybe.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
They're doing something with the D I don't know if
to throw it up.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, if you're from Dallas, are you throwing up your deep?
It's all about the cream, Matt Cash rolls everything around.
You've been saying that for a long time. Cream get
the money, dollar dollar bills, y'all. So if you were
in Guantanamo Bay and we were trying to get some
information out him, we would hold him down, pour Mayo
down his bro to get him to talk. Gott to
wrap her up and water her properly. I gave her
a good tip though she's happy. I didn't know you
needed to bet. I'd have given you a bet. You're
(00:45):
rubbing a Dillo seven rubber. Thomas Sports Touch I've never touched.
I've never touched all interest in touching it. I went
to South Atlanto State Park and one time they're they're
all over the place in that park.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
All right, we are ready to go with the Friday,
get ins of the show, dyll O, Robert Thomas in
the house.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
I'm going to be and look, I have lied on
this show a lot. Oh, I mean and how and
the average person does lie four times a day since
we've gone to ten to two. Yes, this is the
most refreshed I felt at ten o'clock since this show
has started. I mean you look haggard. Well, I mean
(01:31):
that's actually always going to be the case because you
always make fun of my appearance. You always make fun
of mine. That's how we roll. That's true. And I
was out last night, so it wasn't like I had
like we oh town, there was a Rockets function wearing
suit and sneaks. Adam Wesler, No, I wore this suit
and dress shoes. Yeah, you could never pull it off.
(01:52):
By the way, one of the clients of the Rockets
heard us talking about it and he goes, I'm one
hundred percent with you. Wearing sneaks is lazy. It's a
new school, it's a new wave. I wouldn't do it.
I'm a traditionalist. Matt. Yeah, because I think a good
pair of really nice looking dress shoes is something you
should brag about putting on. A pair of Nikes. It's
(02:12):
not that. I mean, it's okay, Yeah, I mean there
are some. You can definitely go high end with some
tennis shoes and it can certainly match the suit. But
I would say dress shoes is to play. But you
know it teaches on him. I'm not gonna. I'm not
gonna dress shaming. It seems like you would. I mean
I kind of would, but not you. You're always trying
to dress shame Adam Clanton every day he walks in here. Yeah,
because he's warring some other little Texans Jersey. That's fine.
(02:33):
Let him live his life, I do, but I make
fun of it. Let him spend forty percent of his
income on various jerseys and jacket. Of course, he won't
build of a Ford Carson's College, but he's got plenty
of C. J. Stroud's uniforms. Yeah for Horse Carson. He's
Dad's got issues, really bad ones, but we love him anyway.
All right, Welcome to a Friday edition to the Bad
(02:55):
Tomas Show. We got a lot to get to today,
my goodness, so much to get to, all right. First
and foremost, it is.
Speaker 5 (03:01):
An editing goes Friday, and that means Ross what do
people do in seven one three two one two five seven, Well,
they call us.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
That is the phone number seven one three two one
two five seven ninety as in anything goes Friday, it
means you can get to anything you would like to.
We have drunk callers who call with a bunch of crazy,
off topic stuff and actually it's some morning drunk callers
I heard on the six to ten Showred Shawn Salisbury
Show with Brian li Lima as well. So you can
(03:30):
still get in anything you want to get to. If
you want to talk about I don't know, Championship weekend.
Will Jaden Daniels be the first rookie ever to start
in a Super Bowl? We can get to that. You
also have the Texans in their off season. How do
they address the offensive line? No, don't do that. Nobody cares,
I mean and they eventually will care about Not today
(03:51):
we do have some Texans news, though we do we
also have some possible Astros news. I think it's very possible.
It's just very peculiar to me. Yeah, Bob Nightingale, what's
the deal? Well, I mean, Bob's a little closer than
it than I think he originally was. He started the
day off with the deal with the Cubs and the
(04:11):
and the Ryan Presley, and that then he backed off.
Eminent means it should have happened by now, and that
hasn't happened. Now, I'm gonna give that an el to
old Bobby. And then yeah, minutes later Chandler Roman others
were like, uh, Ryan Presley has not way to take
no trade clause doesn't mean he won't, doesn't mean he won't,
but he hasn't at this point. Correct. So I woulde
(04:31):
have to say Bob probably took a loss on that one.
Imminent meaning now again, emminent is a there's no definitive time.
It means it should have happened. Yeah, I would say
by ten o'clock the next morning, it should have happened,
I would agree. So that's a loss for him.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
But there are numerous reports about the fact that the
astros heave indeed not closed the door on Alex Sprigman.
They're gonna leave the door open. And then apparently the
sixth year, one fifty six deal maybe still on the table, Okay,
and at which point, which which point? What Josel tuove
(05:05):
to the left, Well, I'm not moving pain to the left.
If he's my future short stop, I'm not changing that
he's not. Parties can move around. Yes, a two by
to left field sounds really peculiar. Now, let's role play
for a second here. Okay, JOSEL Tuve did not hide
(05:27):
the fact last September how much he wanted bregmant to stay. Yes,
I think I think he did that more of the
likes of please pay him to be our third basement forever.
And then when the market basically didn't match what Bregman
was looking for. Then my guess is Altuve lobbed the
phone called a Jim Krant. I think this was a
(05:47):
This was a skip past a Spata and a skip
past Dana Brown. This was right to Jim and said, hey, listen,
if you bring him back, because he is such an
important part of our team, I will make the sacrifice
and I'll go to left field. I've kind of dreamt
about what hose Ael Tube is like in left field. Okay,
(06:08):
I'm not overly excited about it, but it does show
you how badly, if indeed Jose really did say this,
how badly he wants Alex Bergman to come back, that
he would sacrifice a position he has played his entire
professional career to go play left field, which some places
it can be easy, none made minute may would be,
(06:29):
you know, the easiest of the group. Now, he wouldn't
always he would always have to be in left field
because of the fact that you're gonna probably get yard
on out there thirty five forty times, and then there
will be some nights where maybe you shift some other
outfielders and Mariso du Bond gets an occasional start out
in the left field. So you're looking at probably, I
don't know, ross if Jose plays one hundred and fifty games,
(06:51):
maybe a hundred out and left again. I'm just throwing
this stuff against the wall here. It doesn't excite me,
but it does show you how bad the greatest astro
of them all wants a teammate to come back to
hashtag run it back. Yes he does. Man, I'm gonna
give you some stat cast percentiles. Now, let's put there
(07:15):
in perspective here. You don't have any metrics on him's
work in left field. Correct, No, so let's go into
what you do have. Okay, I'm gonna start with the
highest percentile he has sprint speed forty fourth percentile that's
below mid arm strength. Now this is from second base.
Maybe he doesn't have to, you know, in left field
(07:36):
of your weakest arm in the outfield has to be
in left seventh percentile continue range. This is the big
one for me. Third percentile. This was at second base.
(07:58):
Now now hold on before you do the next one. No,
that's it. Jake Myers can help you cover left field.
That's true. Left centerfield, for sure, he can. So I'm
going to throw this out to a great city of
Houston and all of our awesome listeners. I want you
to close your eyes if you can. If you're driving,
(08:20):
do not close your eyes. But if you are not
driving and you're listening at home, or you're in the bedroom,
or you're in the bathtub, or you are on a
sales call and you're just in your car, just sitting
and relaxing, envision jose al Tuve in left field. What
do you see out there? Because here's the thing, Rossi Maddie,
(08:46):
many years ago, I closed my eyes and asked the audience,
way back in the day before you were you and
I are ever working together, And I said, Houston, Texas,
I want you to envision Craig Bigio in centerfield, and
people would call and they said, Matt, it ain't gonna
be pretty, and it was and it wasn't pretty. It
(09:09):
was respectable, admirable, but needlesses say, there were not gold
Glove considerations for Craig Bigio on centerfield, Houston, Texas in vision,
if you will Craig Bigio out Jose l Tuve in
(09:30):
left field seven one three two, one two five seven
is that really worth it?
Speaker 6 (09:37):
Hm?
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Bragg? You back? Is it it six one fifty six
or is it a one twenty four or a three
ninety two with buyout options? Get jord On out there,
but they're trying to limit that for one hundred games.
One hundred games, it would be an adventure. At least
(10:00):
think about his base running. It could be like that
for him tracking down fly balls. I mean, if anybody
is gonna put the time into get it better to
become at least a competent left fielder, it'd be hosal Toy.
That's the one thing you can trust is that Hose.
I trust him completely. Just go out there and wing it.
He ain't gonna go. Oh you really put me a
left ha ha. Mirror is on it. Yeah, he would
(10:24):
treat it very seriously, just like Craig treated it seriously.
M hmm. But the reality is you're taking a lifetime
infielder and putting him in the outfield at age thirty
four in that range thirty three, thirty four, late mids,
no late earlies, thirties. He is thirty four, he will
(10:44):
be thirty five in May. Oh, he's definitely mid now.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. And
if I'm Alex Fragmant, I'll tell you what I'm thinking
about this when we come back, because this, to me
is pure love. Seven one three two one two five
(11:06):
seven ninety. Can you picture the possibilities of owning a
new car refinancing your current vehicle for a better rate,
lower rate, or a shorter term. You can do that
right now with the shell FSCU. You cane two hundred

(11:27):
pace per year. FCU branches are around all around town that
Shell UPSCU. You can also apply online at SHELLPSU dot
org or call seven one three eight four four eleven hundred.
That's seven one three eight four four eleven hundred. Lending
representatives are available weekdays until ten Saturdays until five shell
FSCU dot org for three point nine to nine percent
APR up to thirty six months. That SHELLFSU dot org
(11:49):
for the Shell Federal Credit Union.
Speaker 7 (11:52):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on four
o'tox seven ninety.
Speaker 8 (12:04):
Who said that Bob Bob night and I can't see it,
but you know that's something he's open to and he
wants to do. And you know, I know he's going
to try to show up every single day and doesn't
matter where they put him, he's going to try to
do his best for the team.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
We should have been.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Dancing well, Jeremy Payne. I mean, I think there's legs
of this. I do. I think is like, look up,
I got my contract, I'm set for life. I want
to keep my man here by Broski. Is that what
he's saying. I mean, if we almost lost you Ross,
(12:45):
they said, Matt, would you go to one am before
him and say no, Ross get the hell out. That's fine,
but it different. Expect you to make sacrifice for anyone, Matt,
It's different. It's different for He'll say on tube again,
if you're gonna go glass half full, because he's the
greatest aster of a whole time he was. He's going
to give it his all, but physical limitations are going
(13:06):
to ultimately kick in a little bit here by the time.
It always wins, is it not. Yeah, he does, and
he's been winning the last couple of years at second
base where Jose Al two has not been great there.
If you think I'm saying a bad word about Jose too,
but you're a gonna happen, Okay, you'll like to say,
I can. I can also deal in reality in the
fact of the matter that he hasn't been good at
(13:27):
say I'm saying so I'm gonna be honest. No, no, no,
you're you're you're okay with that being I mean, I'm not,
that's honest. But this is exactly what we did as
a younger sportscaster when we heard, wait a minute, Jeff
Kent's coming to the Astros and Craig is gonna go
to center field, Like give it a try, why not?
And who's gonna it? Can't hurt, right, God, Jose wants
(13:50):
him back bad mm hmm, Jose wants him back. Good
for him. Good for Jose for dropping that in there.
Because Praid's we already talked about yesterday, has never played
the outfield. And you're not moving, Jeremy Payne. You just can't.
That's if that's your future shortstop and that's all he's done.
Relatively speaking, You can't know. I wouldn't think so. I
(14:12):
would be surprised, very surprised. Meanwhile, Ryan Presley, how's it going?
How's he doing? Apparently, according to John Hayman, the douche
says that he does not want to go east or west?
So the deuces? What does that even mean? Why not?
He's Maybe he's like I like the Central Times though,
maybe he's a Midwest guy. So let's go through the possibilities. Cincinnati, No, Cleveland,
(14:33):
I mean, I guess Chicago White Sox or Cubs, Rangers, Cargoes, Twins,
you go back to the Twins?
Speaker 5 (14:42):
Now?
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Is are the Colorado Rockies too far? That's in our
mountain West?
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Sorry, yeah, that's not west, it's will we say west
of the Rockies.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
It's like it's on the Rockies. Literally, that's the name
of the team. If I would say what part of
the country is Denver, and I would say it's in
the west, So sorry, that doesn't count. You lost. So
Ryan's gonna basically say about seven or eighteens want to
go to. Isn't it weird that someone's asked that, Like
I'm old, Like, for instance, if you were to get
a job somewhere else, you would say, there's about fifteen
(15:11):
places I would like to go, and there's probably ten
or fifteen I wouldn't go. I don't think you would
narrow it down to a certain sect sector of the country,
would you not. I mean, you could say south, but
to say midwest is where you prefer to go? Mm hmm.
What's the what's the longitude? Maybe he wants to hear
like a lot of John Cougar Mellencamp songs and he
knows they don't get on a play on the East
(15:32):
Coast or West Coast. Maybe West Coast is too chill
for him, the East Coast too aggressive. Matte, that's actually
a fair statement, I guess. So so twins are okay.
You can go back to the twins. He said, according
to John Ayman, it's a Midwest thing. Okay, it sounds
like to me the Cubs will put together something here,
don't you think? Sounds like John, Astros and Cubs have
(15:54):
already done something already. You're gonna tell me the Astros
have a deal to send him to the Dodgers. And
he would say, no, I ain't never to imagine that. Yeah, well,
apparently Toronto wanted him and and he's like, no, I'm
just gonna speculate, because that's what we do. I'm speculating.
John Hayman's talking out of his ass, And he said, Doe,
that's not speculation, that's true. Fact. I don't like to
(16:17):
use that D word very often, but I had to
do it. You use it daily, not on air, all
their constantly. All right, So I've asked all of you
to close your eyes as long as you're not driving
ross do you close your as you're not driving? Okay?
Now playing left field for your Astros, Jose, al tu
they what you thinking? And that one gets over Jose's
(16:38):
oh now stop and he misses fifty feet. No, no,
say that now? Tuvey dies for that one. He had
no chance. What was he thinking, No, why is Jerry
Seinfeld doing the play by play? I can't believe what
I'm saying. Josel in life wants to deal with that.
(17:04):
So back to what I was saying, If I'm Alex
Bregmant and I see this report and I hear because
obviously jose probably could talk to breggs Man, you lou
love me. I want Josel Tuvey love tour. I want
someone to love me as much as Josel Tuba loves
Alex Bregman. I think he's also tired of seeing all
his good I mean he was, he was bros with
(17:25):
Correa and Springer. Probably not Garrett Cole No, but he's
obviously can't be thrilled that Kyle Tucker's not playing right field.
Michael Brantley, I mean all the hearts and souls of
this team in years past. Charlie Morton, who's still in
the major leagues. No, yeah, they should have signed him.
That the Rays was like a two year, thirty million
dollars deal or something they should have signed that was.
(17:47):
I think Charlie's like forty nine. Now, Yeah, there was
nothing but puss, but that's a different issue. He can
still he can still humme it. I was gonna say
crank it, but that's wrong. Yeah. Putting hum and crank
in the same conversation with not have been great. Mm hmm.
Seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero. Look
(18:08):
what am I supposed to do if if Fragment is
on this team, it's better today than it was yesterday? Right, Yes,
I think so? Yeah, for the immediate couple of years.
So you're worried about three, four, five and six, isn't
that what Jim Crane is worried about? No, Jim Crane
was not worried because the deal is there was there
(18:29):
apparently if you believe it at six one fifty six. Okay,
So I think I don't think Crane was worried about
it for six years. It'be Dan woud gives him seven
damn give him one hundred and fifty five. I think
he gave him an extra year just because he's Alex pragmant.
Mm hmm. I don't know. That's good. Well, we don't know.
But this is you don't say this very much. You
(18:50):
don't see a sport that offers the sacrifice it's not
a sacrifice. I mean, let's put this in perspective, but
it is something that not a lot of different people like.
Speaker 9 (19:03):
You.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
I mean, Joe Mixon wouldn't say, man, we need to
get running back in here. I'm gonna go play tight
end for this team. Oh yeah, it's a different sport. Yeah,
I'm just saying it's very different and not often that
a player would shift positions so dramatically to Alex Rodriguez
went to third for Derek Jeter even though he should
(19:25):
have been the short because he was a better shorts.
That's still left side of the infield. That's not that dramatic.
But change. This is a this is Craig, excuse me,
this is this is out of left field. Oh we
days send the two Sports Talk seven Auntie, Aggie, Doug Roger,
Johnny Rico, You're all next as the Matt Thomas schel
Ross were taking calls absolutely from you, the great citizens

(21:19):

This isn't good.
Speaker 12 (21:25):
Cracked this up, Connor, It's fun. I like this song
by the Navy C.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
I can play it after God by the way. One
quick thing personal before we get to the phones. I
got a lot of I want to talk. I forgot
to mention this. Uh and we were actually talking about
this off air. I want to thank all of you
that sent me nice messages on Facebook and Instagram. By
my daughter committing to university wrote I want to play volleyball.
A couple ladies in the office were like, oh wow,
(21:56):
I saw that, So thank you everybody that said something nice.
If you didn't say somethingnice, don't worry. I didn't say
anything rude. You didn't saything nice though. Congratulations. What do
you mean it took you took you a week? I'm
not That was a message for other Engratulations to Carly.
She wasn't here. I would congratulate her. Yeah yeah, so uh,
I got college taken care of airfares are Rhode Island
(22:16):
not taken care of? Good luck with that man. The
Matt Thomas Show from Rhode Island every Friday for the fall,
coming in two years. Oh my god, you come with us. No,
I'm not going to Rhode Island. You you it's spectacular.
I'm sure it's great. You get my flight. Yeah, I
will come. Yeah, okay, well now go. No, you're you're awful.
(22:37):
What yeah, I will pay for you to go one
time because I want you to see her ply Okay, yeah,
I've been real busy. I haven't been able to make
it up. I know, one more year off the high school.
We come see her play. You said I can bring
a six pack, right, No, you cannot bring a six pack.
And I'm telling you the de four cs are there
the what now the four seas defources. Oh okay, just
(22:58):
if you're interested in that kind of thing and that volleyball.
Moms they sound angry. Uh yeah, I would say, alec,
my mom is gonna be angry, especially when their daughters
don't play for the phones. We go our buddy Aggie
Dog on seven and eight eighty. You got Alex Bregman.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
Maybe back with the astros, it's just a maybe what
you're thinking.
Speaker 9 (23:18):
All right, let's just play this out like it's actually
a serious possibility, right, Okay, this really CRUs up a
lot of things. Right after Christian Walker signing, you signed
him for three years. Let's say that you're gonna go
ahead and get Bregman. You're you're six for one fix, Well,
then what the hell do you have Tamas Smith? Do
you have him go play the outfield now?
Speaker 2 (23:39):
So?
Speaker 9 (23:39):
I mean, and he thought parade is so? I mean,
I just if this actually is true, it would be
extremely interesting because I think you have to immediately have
to have Bregman go back to third days. I think
that's the only reason he's coming back. I would probably
guess he would take the three year opt out situation,
(24:01):
which kind of puts us right back in the same
uh basket that we're in. This This year was always
Bregman gonna stay or is he gonna go? Or if
it's a situation where hey, you want to play one
more year and you know, until Camus Smith is ready,
maybe that's the situation that that uh that we'd be
interested in. But I just think that the moves that
have already been met make a whole lot of sense.
(24:24):
And I get that the outfield that we have right
now is not is not a World Series outfield, But
it's not a situation where Josel Tutha.
Speaker 5 (24:33):
Makes Yeah, Doug, we're losing you there and and this
time it's your fault.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
No, because our are That sounds like a good bad connection.
Can I go in and put this down as an
early gut feeling because I think we got to kind
of do this now in case that really happens all weekend.
I this is a true gut feeling in my part.
No inside information on this, no inside information on a
recorded line. If Bregmant indeed does come back, it's not
(24:59):
at what's not at six fifty six, it's more or less.
I think it's a short term deal. Yeah, he could
come back on a one year it could be one
or two. I think the sixth that the Rossie the
moves that were made with life after Bredman, as the
Astros maybe would have interpreted, don't dictate sixty one fifty
(25:20):
six because Cam Smith is a future astro. Bryce Matthews
is a former as a current excuse me, is a
future astro. You know what I'm saying Jacob Melton is
a future astro. I think that that. I think Sick
committing six to Briggs kind of muddies the waters a
little bit of that. I mean, I mean, look, you
(25:40):
can maneuver anything. Guys can be traded. Guys can also
not perform. You can shift and move players around.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
But it this again, I this really, really really and
this is just me being sports fan.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
You and I Aggie, Doug Roger, Johnny Reco at the bar.
This feels like to me, Jose went right to Jim
and said, hey, Braggs is kind of feeling down on
the dumbs. He's not getting the type of money that
he wants. Where we've already lost Kyle Tucker, we still
need some help for this baseball team offensively, and I'm
(26:15):
willing to do whatever it takes for us to keep
the Bros together. That big left field signing we were
hoping for, it's Jose L Tuvey. Am I crazy? It
seems crazy? No, I mean that's how I think. I think.
I think Jose went to Jim on this maybe, and
I think Jim would say, Okay, Jose, you're our greatest
(26:36):
aster of all time. You are the he is gonna
say that okay, and he's gonna say, okay, you know,
we need a left fielder and we got too many
people in the infield. We've already brought east Sick Parides
here at via Trade, We've already signed Christian Walker, and
he's like, you know, Hose's like, I'm I'll do whatever
it takes. I mean, this happens sometimes in workplaces. I'll
shift positions, I'll move different departments. If you're keeping assets around,
(26:59):
I think I think the ass Droe still feel that
ax Bergman's an asset. He's a freaking gold glover. Ops.
What's seven fifty this year? Seven sixty eight or eight?
I mean that's you don't want to lose. That's a
loss when you lose that as when you lose that,
that's a loss. But I I can't think that six
one fifty six is still there. Yeah, seven sixty it's good.
(27:23):
So it's not great. If he was so great, he'd
be signed. I'm going to take myself off the stage
and putting you on the stage for a second. Okay,
what is your what is your really befocause this could
be re settled by the time we get together on Monday.
What does your gut right now say that's going to
hap My gut feeling is this does not happen at all.
That's fair too, I'll put put it this way. I
would be shocked. I'd be surprised. I think it would
(27:48):
be a cool story. It is great for us when
Jose al two Bay's name gets brought up in left field.
That's not a sh that's a shocking position, Yes it is,
But it's not shocking that jose tub would go to
drastic measures to keep his guy. It would take Alex
Bregman swallowing his pride chang Ding. It would take the
(28:13):
Astros being willing to spend well over the tax threshold
ding for the second straight year ding, And it would
take positional changes and the other teams to drop out
and not get close to matching what the Astros want.
All that has to happen, and probably things I'm not
even thinking of. But your offense is better, your offense
(28:34):
is better is a completely unknown. I'm not predicting whether
it's gonna happen or now. I'm saying this is the
My line of thinking about how this has happened is
that Jose is like my man, my one of my
best friends on Earth is getting nowhere close to the
(28:54):
financial dollars he wants because maybe Scott Boris Gez gave
him some bad advice. So you don't take the six
one fifty six VISI because you come back as a well,
you went out there and kicked the tires and your
value wasn't there. But if you signed a short term deal,
give you a chance to reinvest yourself, reinvent yourself, and
(29:16):
stay with a team that loves you. Stay with the
only team that you've ever been with. Yeah, one year
deal to hashtag run it back, that's probably what it
would be. All right, let's go to Rico in a
leaf at ten forty two on the Matt Thomas Show. Rico,
thank you for holding Good morning.
Speaker 9 (29:32):
Man, love the show, bro, first time, long time man.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
How everything going? Man? It is our pleasure Rico having
you on the show. What's going on? By the way,
A Ley for Life boot Elementary class of nineteen eighty one,
I think, oh.
Speaker 13 (29:46):
Really okay, yeah, I'm from that Hastings for ninety three.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
All Right, we're good, We're good.
Speaker 13 (29:53):
Hey, but man, shit hit me out first of all, man, like,
first hear me out and then you know what I'm saying,
we can in my thing. How what if you know
we sim Brayman, get rid of Tania, you know, trade
trade him, and then how about we trade operas and
get three outfielders.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
What's your thought on that, Rico? Are you sniffing paint
right now?
Speaker 13 (30:21):
I'm not a big fan of pint and operas, man,
That's why like they're they're weak?
Speaker 9 (30:25):
Man.
Speaker 13 (30:26):
I don't like weak players, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Who's you're not? Alvarez's week? What weak?
Speaker 5 (30:33):
Man?
Speaker 2 (30:35):
I want you to say that to his face? What's
weak about him?
Speaker 14 (30:38):
Weak?
Speaker 2 (30:38):
He could crush you like a grape, Rico, I don't
care if you're mad.
Speaker 5 (30:41):
If you're mad, if you're built the granite, you crush you.
Speaker 13 (30:44):
He's always hurt, He slides and gets hurt.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Come on, man, who does that?
Speaker 13 (30:50):
I played faith on my whole life and that has
never happens to me.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Love you, Rico, but your take is horrific. We do
love you though. Wow, that's that's he wanted. What do
you want to trade Paya and Alvarez for three outfielders
for three outfit for three outfielders?
Speaker 5 (31:11):
Man?
Speaker 2 (31:11):
I was bragging on a leaen, that's yours, that's your peace.
That's you just downgraded a leaf. Uh forks and a leaf.
Been trying to repair the image for decades on Alvarez
career batting average of two ninety eight career ops of
nine to seventy three. No, thank you. Seven one three,
(31:31):
two one two five seven ninety seven one three. Should
the Astros trade you want on Alvarez for three outfielders?
Oh no, don't even put that out there. It isn't
anything goes Friday. It is anything clearly. Clearly, the morning
drunks are out Rico cineumonia tastes pretty good on a
Friday morning. Seven one three two one two five seven
nine zero. I want to tell you about uptown appliance repair,
(31:54):
they said, Matt. I know some people have refrigerators are
not working. They're not cool properly. Your icemaker's on creating
ice for you. We'll fix it. You have any household appliances,
I repeat, any household appliances that don't work in our
need to repair, Buying new stuff is not the great
thing to do because it's very expensive. The warranties costs
(32:15):
a lot. Get with the premiere appliance for professionals here
in town. That's Uptown Appliance Repair two eight one seven,
five eight nine nine seven eight two eight one seven
five eight nine nine seven eight. Microwaves, washer dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers,
gas grills, dryer events. Anything in your house that's not
working at its prime, call Uptown Appliance Repair two eight
(32:40):

eight one seven, five eight nine nine seven eight Uptown
Appliant Repair dot com.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
Matton Ross return return on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
I never heard the song before my entire life. Botch.
Do you cut a argum with this?
Speaker 15 (33:00):
On?
Speaker 16 (33:00):
Connor?
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Oh, this was the jam on the radio in like
middle school. For me. It's a it makes sense. It's
called Still Into You. Yeah, this song absolutely blows anything
goes Friday. You know what seventh grade Connor mc government
was getting the girls of this song? I know you were.
Paramore was the band back in the day. What is
(33:22):
it called Paramore? Yeah? Kid, the kids like the Paramore
makes a parent make me paranoid? All right. My philosophy,
my take on this is totally not knowing the inside
is that this is Jose trying to put together a
last second ditch effort to get his guy to stay
(33:42):
in town. Maybe Scott Boris is saying, hey, if the
Astros are willing to do this, and by the way,
let's float that six one fifty six still out there,
come get your boy. But man, it is the be
the trade winds have I down not trade wins. They're
not trade wins, they're uh, it's free agent wins. It
(34:03):
works some of wins, all right, I won't do that.
And that's Sinatra though, yeah, I know we love Sinatra
on the show. Well, we're talking about Alex Bregman, okay,
and paranoid Sarah Moore par whatever seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
(34:24):
two five seven nine zero. Are we really okay with
a massive overhaul? Peretti's at second, Altuve in left, Bragmant
at third, better lineup. But the thought of Jose Tuvey
give or take about one hundred games in left field,
(34:47):
it's not happening. You think this is just you think
this is agent slash player driven to get some headlines
out there, trying to think of because as you know, Matt,
anytimes something like this leaks out you have to say
who benefits from this? What side did it come out?
And I don't can't really necessarily make head or tails
of that. But it's I don't know, it's just I
(35:13):
will just say, on its face, it just seems too wacky.
It's too wacky. Too many things have to come together.
But if you are able to acquire assets in a
company or a sports team, don't you just and it's
still you still consider this asked to be a prime asset,
and Alex Pergman is still a prime asset. No one,
I don't think is debating that at this point for
(35:33):
twenty twenty five. Don't you just quote unquote figure it out.
I I just who's your favorite national radio host? Do
you even have one? Okay? Well, then uh, Dan Patrick? Okay,
(35:54):
Let's say Dan Patrick called our bosses and said, hey,
I want to do a Houston centric show for two
hours a day. Okay, We at iHeart would figure a
way to make that happen. We would say we're gonna
move this show around. Here, this show you fit, you know,
you kind of move the pieces around. Mister analogy, I
don't know, I don't think that's a terrible analogy. Actually, Okay,
(36:17):
I just don't know that there is a necessarily analogy
because of baseball and the positions that are played. It's
completely different. Yea, unless you I don't know. I don't
want about basketball. We were worried about Chris Paul being
here and James Harden and who's going to dominate the ball. Yeah,
Mike d'An TONI said, I got two point guards and
at one time they'll they'll start the game together and
then one will go take a rest. Then the other
will be the point guard, and then the other one
(36:38):
takes a rest, and there won't be the point guard.
H But he figured it out. Just different from every
other sport. And I can't make a cricket analogy. So no,
I just don't want. I don't want Jose to be
a defensive liability out and left, and that will be.
But he's a defensive liability at second right now he is.
I'm sorry, Oh god, I can't. I can't say it.
(37:00):
I just can't can't pull that trigger. I'm sorry. That's
a flaw on my part. Eric. And basically we'll get
to you in just a second. Let's go to Roger
northwest side of the Matt Thomas Shill, Robert, good morning,
it's Roger whatever.
Speaker 15 (37:11):
But yeah, whatever, So the old the old positioning to
it going to the left field, that doesn't even make sense.
What's Bergward's natural position? Shortstop? Right?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Yeah, when he was younger, he probably wouldn't go to
shortstop at thirty one.
Speaker 15 (37:34):
Well, making ose L Twove go to left field at
thirty five makes even less sense than that. So why
not put pain in left field? Which is above average arm,
it's above average speed, and his you know, all his
all his tools bring him out there. I know he's
a shortstop of the future, but let's just make it
(37:54):
the future the future and let him play left field now.
And who's to say he can't play them?
Speaker 4 (37:59):
Of course up there?
Speaker 15 (38:00):
You know when when the leed arrives that way, you
got all your plus your plus players and your plus
abilities where they need to be in order to put
the best product on the field. That would be the
most logical thing.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Now, I don't know, Jerry Payania is not moving from shortstop.
He's a much better short stop than I would be surprised.
I would say, I'll be some really surprised because Jeremy
Payna is a premium shortstop, and Alex Bregman at this
point of his career, we don't even know what. He
hadn't played really short stop since his first couple of
years in the year in the league. And he's thirty
(38:35):
one years old now and he doesn't have the range
that he did younger in his career, and he and
they're probably thinking, if anybody's willing to make the move,
why would you take away a plus defensive position to
make yourself weaker at two different spots or at least,
you know, going off of the metrics that Ross has
given you. Right now, jose al Tube is a below
(38:56):
average second basement defensively, So you're taking one below average
position player and take him to another. Put. It's not
like you're losing a doll glove at second base, but.
Speaker 15 (39:04):
He's gonna be a horrible defensive liability, you know. Can't
I just man plus an injury liability at that? So
I'm just saying, I don't. I don't see how he's
gonna go to left field.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Well, I think if you're gonna put, if you're gonna
make the transformation, probably left field your easiest because eighty
games of yours is at a very short porch left field. Yes,
then you have a plus center fielder in Jake Myers.
He's gonna cover some more ground than the average center
fielder is going to cover. I don't love it, but
if you wanted to talk me into it, Yeah, we're
(39:36):
spending some time talking about it today. It's easier to
the trade off from al Tuove from second to left
isn't gonna be as much as losing Jeremy Pinia at
shortstop and putting him in left, which is a much
less I mean, shortstop is the premium defensive position along
with center field.
Speaker 15 (39:54):
Well, would you say adding another outfielder like a profile
or something on something in that caliber, would would probably
do yesterday? Okay with somebody somebody, because we're just I
just don't see we we don't have the even though
we put all these pieces in play, Like the way
you said with a two V in left fields and
you make a bragman stays you still got you still
(40:18):
don't have the firefower. You still need something else in
the outfield because the outfields are going to be uh
train wreck. You know you don't have the guys. You
know Myers can't hit and fres can't hit it well, but.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Makes your outfielder from from an ops standpoint significantly better.
It just does, because that's you're you're moving in from
them and that. But that's not the reason why you
do it. And thank you for the phone call. Appreciate it.
I just this is either at making a last ditch
effort to make this happen, or this is agent driven
to get people to get off the pot and actually
(40:53):
commit Breakman too a deal because you could say, man,
if Bragman signed, let's say you with the Cubs. Man,
I want to thank jose Al Tuvy. He was willing
to make the ultimate sacrifice for me and I love
that guy. You know that quote would be coming if
he winds up going somewhere else because this is hojise
freaking out Tuve. This is the guy that is paroled
(41:14):
second base since the Astro since twenty eleven, it's been
his spot. The Astros have basically taken anybody in the
draft or anybody in their mine. Laksys have been said,
you're not playing second base, go play somewhere else, go
play different position. Our second base spot is there for life,
and it's JOSEL Tuve. And then all of a sudden
out of nowhere, He says, you know what, Bragman doesn't
have a deal. I'm gonna go play left field in
(41:35):
my age thirty five season. Yeah, I mean be wild,
that'd be. That's why I just don't think it's happening.
I just don't. All right, more from Johnny and Eric.
To start the second hour of the show, we have
found an ultimate seventies Krooner song to honor Alex Bregman.
We have yes. Okay. By the way, is this show
an entire show and Alex Bregman update? I think so.
(41:57):
We haven't played the sounder yet. By the way. Also
to the show, we got the championship games of the
NFL this weekend. Okay. We also have the Texans looking
for a new president. And there's a reason why. Second
hour next here on seven ninety after I tell you
about Scott Callahan and associates. If you were involved in
an accident because of the ice and snow, If you've
(42:19):
ever been involved in an accident and you are still suffering,
and you're still in pain, and you've lost work opportunities
and your family is in a tough spot, or you're
fighting with your insurance company, I do not want you
to go this alone. I want you to call my
friend Scott Callahan kind a chance to visit with him
and his wife about a month ago. They're a family,
their daughters are involved in soccer and other things of
big community related folks. And Scott Callan Associates will listen
(42:44):
to you. They'll fight hard and give you a voice
to get you back on your feet with no out
of pocket or no money up front. That's Scott Callahan
and Associates will do. They are Board certified in personal
injury trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
They are also a tech This is a super lawyer
group by the Thompson Rutters. Every year since twenty eleven.
You don't realize only the top five percent of Texas attorneys.
(43:06):
I still like to each year. Do you understand that
a lot of people spend a lot of goofy money
putting out selly TV commercials and silly billboards about personal
injury attorneys. I'm not gonna do that for you. I'm
it's going to be a man that I trust that's
going to make sure you get taken care of when
it comes to eighteen. Little recks work injuries, construction, oil

Speaker 1 (43:47):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
And the one too swing in a three pointer for
way down Town. That's got.
Speaker 16 (44:01):
Alex Bragman went the long ball and three nothing with
two strikes.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
Bragmant popsy waggles the bat. Here's the pitch hendy folks.
Speaker 5 (44:11):
This one left film deep and gone.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
Ben it bad.
Speaker 5 (44:19):
You rubbed with Bragman's fifth Grand slam.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
Of his career. HiT's seven to one walk set now
the one two and fragment lines. This one dee to
left field pack is Rooker looking up see Alana.
Speaker 17 (44:34):
Alex Pragman his third hover in the last two days.
Speaker 2 (44:38):
One nothing Astros, don't let the kid get hot. The
one Oh Ragman belt it day to left field and
this game is over. One of the train track les
Fragman a walk off hold run and the Astros winning

(45:02):
down five nothing at one boy Cragman with the bat
flip that landed in our boot. I can spell the
pine tars. Can't load without your ross, can't load without brightening.
I guess we can. And I appreciate that. I mean,
I don't want you going anywhere. We've been together for
a long time, fifteen years, like an old married couple
(45:22):
going strong man we are. We are feeling good. Baby
eleven o six on Sports SoC Semenny by the way,
on a very sound note for go of the phones.
I hear this commercial, I hear this song I want
to go by a swifter, which is just terrible. Okay, swiffer, yeah, swiffer,
I don't even know what it is. Senator, real quick.
(45:44):
This is a jam. This is a jam. I'm with you,
Thank you. This is one of your easy jams. Even
Connor and his girl are our dance and romantically of
the song. Ye, she breaks up with him. He's gonna
play this on a cloud speaker outside of her window.
He's outside her door in her apartment, knocking on it.
(46:05):
She's calling the police. Yeah, but I just can't live
without you. Connor's girl, a girl named X. Yeah, he
can tell you can say anything that's up to him.
No official announcement. So Swifferd does the commercials with this song, okay,
(46:25):
and then Downy Rinsem Refresh is taking the Bonnie Tower
song from us. Yes, get stuck in my head every
day now if you don't know what Downy Rinse and
Refresh is, I just listened to one of our spot breaks.
We play it about nine times a day. They are
a huge I didn't realize Downy was such a big
sponsor of the Matt Thomas h old Ross Huge. They
love it. They do love it. We're all about fabric
(46:45):
softeners on the show. So this is just terrible. I wish,
I wish bands wouldn't give up their songs like this,
But it's happening all the time, and they're getting paid
a lot of money for it. Good for them. Did you
come up with a couple of hits, get used in
a couple of commercials, go to a casino and played
over and over again. You're good, You're good, you were
doing great. So Matt respected those amazing artists of the
(47:09):
last sixty years that don't use their songs towards commercials
like uh uh, staying alive is what John Travolta on
a rapid ole run commercial. Yes, it is. When he's
mantam Oz Big two. It's fine. He's got a lot
of work done, a lot of work done. Wishing him
the best. You couldn't have had a better ten year
(47:32):
run than he had between Welcome Back Cotter to Greece
to Seren Night Fever, I mean, and then he went
away for twenty years an urban cowboy, if you will,
Urban cow Yeah, good calling that one. And then he
had his comeback with Pulp Fiction. Before that, he was
with Kirsty Allen in that movie Laco's talking. No, that
was Willis Who's Lacus talking? Maybe it is la Uz talking?
(47:55):
Brustolis was the baby, but he was in the movie, right, Yah, yeah, yeah,
look at that. Look John Travolta got his comeback. Look
who's talking? Was he in that? Yeah? Yeah, you're right.
John Travolter wants a little known trivia. Before he married
Kelly Preston way back in the day, who was unfortunate
has passed. He also did a woman was about twenty
five years older than she was she was. Yeah, he's
(48:15):
like twenty two. She's dance, she's like forty seven. She
passed a little to. In fact, he's also very good
at playing the sitar. Yeah, he also wears a lot
of drag not that word allegedly. No, I know he's
in that, he was in. He's in a lot of
drag movies. Okay, I don't know if he did play
the gitar. Sorry, Oh okay seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
(48:36):
seven on. Our main topic today has been that, uh,
the Alex Bregman rumors have taken a new level, right
they just these, I mean these are fresh ones. I
love this. This is this is late January sports radio. Oh,
I'm happy about ours. Can Alex wait cuts discuss Texas?
I'm back in core. Can we figure out what offensive
lineman to the first rounds cousscusts?
Speaker 9 (48:57):
That?
Speaker 2 (48:58):
No, hell no, that's boring ass to much more entertaining field.
I know I'm saying, I'm not even I'm serious. This
is great too. I'm enjoying loss better than other crap
that could be out there. I did not break down
Jacksonville's head coaching higher when I woke up a couple
of days ago. I didn't know I'd be discussing the
l was al two mays left field prowess. This is great,
(49:21):
by the way, you Bob Nightingale congratulately have or maybe not,
he gave us the topic. At least yes he did.
Congratulations to Pete Carroll, the new coach of the Las
Vegas Raiders at the right age of what is there?
Seventy Las Vegas is a nice retirement community. Is he
a dell Webs part of this or what? What dell
Web isn't a property that the older people live in
(49:43):
del Webs? I think it is. Okay, I'll take you're
word for it. Somebody backed me up on the dell Web.
I think I'm right about that. And then one other
thing that we tease the closest first hour, the Texans
had to fifty five plus active adult communities. Yeah, perfect
for Pete Carroll. Yeah he's active. He looks younger than
seventy Oh he is he seventy three? I didn't know
(50:04):
all he was seventy three years old, so he's in
it for three years. They said, this is our coach
of the future. The seventy three year old Pete Carroll.
That is I'm sure the new era of Raiders football.
This is why. This is all the consulting that Tom
Brady did, and this is the best he could come
up with. So Al Davis's son owns the team, Mark Mark,
(50:29):
tom Brady owns a sliver of the team, I think,
and he is making all the calls. That's what I'm
telling you, Rossie. If if Mark Davis opens up a
bigger piece of the piet of this and Tom Brady
can find the money for it, He's gonna do this.
And then Fox is gonna tell him, Bro, you can't,
we can't have you owned. Tom Brady's agent disagrees with you,
I know, but I'm still holding onto the fact that
he's not gonna finish that cock. We'll revisit in tenure,
(50:51):
the twenty fifty year anniversary of the show. Where revisit
you know what we're doing for twenty five years. We're
doing the show in Australia. We're doing the show for
a Dell Web. That's probably true. Will you will you
push my walker? Push my walker? I'm about to crush
you int Majong today at the Dell Web. Dude, I
can shuffleboard your ass real quick. Well, pe nuncle your
ass to death. Baby tells the king you best not miss.
(51:14):
We're gonna play a best of three backgammon, spades and
shuffle board. Put some dominoes in there and I got
a shot, all right, real fast. Texans need a new president.
This is the business side of things. I don't know
if you guys know who Greg Grissom is. No, I
don't really know him very well. Nice enough guy, but
usually when teams get rid of presidents, they're not making
(51:34):
enough money, which isn't the case of the Texans. They're
making money. Handle or fist. They need some heavy firepower
to go get a new stadium. This is for me
in my mind about the Texans going new wanting a
new stadium. Now, the question is going to be, will
(51:54):
the city of Houston say, shut your ball mass up,
We'll fix up energy for you. You like it. Will
this be all right? You want to build a new stadium,
you can right, you can get the check for it.
We'll give you some land and maybe a tax break
here and there, but you're gonna ride it. You're gonna
fit paying for it. Or are they going to basically
say we've already built you one city and energy is fine,
(52:14):
be done with it. I don't think energy is fine.
It's nice for people to go to game on the
Texans on Sundays, but ross they're gonna They're out of
the super Bowl competition. They will never host any sort
of Olympics or college football playoff or I mean, all
that stuff's gone. These these new majestic facilities are opening
(52:35):
up left and right around football. And as crazy as
it sounds, what is Reliant twenty two NRG twenty two
years old. That's the current shelf life of NFL stadiums,
which is absurd. Where are they gonna put it? If
I was a betting man, I would say they're gonna
get out of the Energy area, the whatever what they
(52:55):
call it, medical center area Hood. I believe hood would
be more. I think they're either going to go to
Edo if there's a spot over there. There's spots, But
my sneaky suspicion is they're going to try to go
West Katie Close. They're gonna. I think they want to
(53:19):
build a Jerry World type the Star type monstrosity and
they need a lot of land in and around it
so they can create their own little city. We saw
the Atlanta Braves do it. We saw Jerry do it
in Arlington. You gotta find a city that's gonna give
him the land, super super cheap, and maybe it all
(53:41):
takes his one suburb. Why do not I be Katie.
That's just a not that's time of a gut feeling.
That's just what I'm thinking they're thinking. Okay, but I
think they're thinking. First of the rodeo wants out of energy.
I mean they're not hiding that. They do. Yeah, they
want their own They want their own palace. Why because
(54:04):
they want to build to control it more than the
fifteen twenty eighths they have a year. Oh I didn't
know that. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (54:09):
Plus, the Astrodome just sits there. That's just wasted space.
That's money, means.
Speaker 2 (54:13):
It's gonna be a multi billionaire job stop market place
for retail. Plus it's it's one of the worst parts
of town. Sorry, I don't mean to get mad. And
most of you live over there. You're a hater. I'm
a realist. There's nothing wrong with the ost South Maine.
What up? Yeah? The boys on Kirby Stell Link, Yeah,
(54:36):
very Niceworth, Holly Hall. My dad leased to live on
Holly Hall. Okay, it was c. Twenty five years ago.
I mean pretty now there they want out of that area,
I'll take a time out. I mean you know, I'm
put my name on it. The next Texans facility will
(54:56):
not be where it is today. Well, there's no land
for that, or they'd have to implode it. What if
they just want to do a facelift, they can do
a face left and move the team over to uh
TDCU for a year or two years. Mm. They need
a real stadium. It is a real stadium. It's a
majestic palace. Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
Speaker 7 (55:20):
The Mat Tamas Show with Ross continues on Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (55:26):
This excuse Quiet Star.
Speaker 11 (55:33):
Sports Talk seven ninety. Bregman Baby, come on back Boil
two V says, get back to h Baby. I'll even
let you throw your h's up.
Speaker 2 (55:45):
I'll play left for you. Seriously, we can do quite
a radio station. We can mix Quiet Star music. Yes,
Connor's dancing, it's radio. Well. People can look at the
video screen. Well, a juiced live YouTube channel. Your lyrics, okay,
(56:06):
I try to try to give me something. My Soultier voice,
you're you gonna be two step in a night at
the at the company, shin dig I'm gonna oh, that's right.
You guys going to You're not going, Yeah, you never
show up to anything. I'll go. I'll beat the casino.
Good luck. Cleveland's taking me for a lot of money
over the years. Remember you hit hit your threes against
(56:27):
the two, thirteen's against the two, yes, or twelve against
the two. No, it's twelve against the two and thirteen
against the two. I know people. You said people are
getting mad at you, that they're getting mad in the thirteens.
Show them the card threes. If the dealer shows threes,
you don't hate anything. Yeah, thirteen against the two, twelve
(56:48):
against the two lfg mm hmm. You and I have
argued about a lot of things in life. We do
share the same sentiment about black check. We are kindred
souls on a few things. Blackjack is one of them. Absolutely,
and that's why I can't let you go. Thank you, Matt.
Let's go to Eric in Bay City at eleven twenty
two on seven y Eric, good morning.
Speaker 4 (57:11):
Hey guys. Two things this morning. One is from y'all
show a couple days ago. Y'all were talking about Lance
Berkman and not getting the five percent his first year.
That does surprise me, because he won a World Series
in Saint Louis, he played in playoff games for the Yankees.
He had a three seventeen batting average and a nine
to sixty nine OPS in one hundred and seventy postseason
(57:31):
at bats. Wow, awesome, let me take incredible numbers. I
think he'll be a Veterans Committee selection at some point.
Speaker 2 (57:39):
There have been people with war stats that have gotten
more votes than Brett than Berkman. I never thought Berkman
was going to get in the Hall of Fame, but
I will agree with you there should have been a
higher percentage.
Speaker 4 (57:49):
I I thought he would have stayed on for more
than one year. The big reason I called this morning,
guys is I'm now on the train to train jose
Al Tuova if he's going to stir Up is like this,
Alex Bregman doesn't have one dollar offered to him by
any other team publicly at this point because nobody wants him.
I told you all this the other day, and I'm
(58:10):
very disappointed that jose Al tube would would join Joe
Espada in this public plea to bring this guy back.
If we sign him for six years, it's going to
be the worst signing in Astro's history. Matt, I hope
your gut feeling is right that it's a one year deal.
If he's coming back, at all I could do I
could do it for one year, but for six years,
that's a horrible, horrible contract.
Speaker 2 (58:35):
Thank you very much. It is absolutely accurate. I wouldn't
trade L two with him. Two is my guy. This
is just but I do see. Here's the thing. You
should not, under any circumstance be surprised that Altab wants
(58:58):
him back. I do believe there there are some people
that are interested in Alex Bregmant just because he hasn't
gotten the offer he wants. I mean, he hasn't been
offered something. So I do believe this is gonna probably
push it along a little bit, but not that. I
don't think if you're if you're the Cubs or you're
(59:18):
anybody else, that you go from oh, well we're all
going to offer you five to one thirty two, or
oh the Ashers want to keep you, so we're gonna
go to eight one ninety five. I don't think baseball.
I don't think baseball sports teams that work that way. Yeah,
I wonder our Alexander says that there has been at
(59:40):
least of KPRC local too, that there has been at
least three teams to offer Bregmant a deal of five
years or longer, including the Astros. Astros is one of
those three. So two other teams have been in talks
with Bregmant, and I think it was Bob Nightingale or
somebody has said that two teams still have offers on
the table for for Bregman. I have been negotiating m
(01:00:03):
So it's only a couple Cubs red cycle sounds like
the Yankees are done. There has been a report that
even after the as Santander signing, that the Blue Jays
still have money. I wonder how much they want to
they're willing to offer and how much. Literally the tax
implications of that are apparently the taxes in Toronto are
(01:00:24):
insane or in Canada plus it. I thought it's depending,
but that that's that if you're making good money. I mean,
George Springer knew that was what he said. With the
Blue Jays, I mean they can get pass out some stuff.
I there's just not there's not an offer that Bregman liked.
(01:00:46):
And I don't know if this is al Tuo Bay
driven exclusively, or this is Scott Borrows calling Jose and saying,
what do you think about doing this? We're gonna call
your old team. Do you want to clear Oboscars? I
feel like Scott Boris is the guy that would go
there's a goal round. Guy. You ain't gonna mess with
Dana Brown? Probably not. And if you're roseel Tuving, you're
the greatest of aster of all time? Are you going
around Dana Brown? Probably kind of? Al Tuove also a
(01:01:08):
Boris client. I say this in Ross. There's inner workings
of this that are a lot deeper than just Jose
Altuve volunteering at services. I think there's layers to this.
What if that's the Whether it's al Tuove saying, Astro's
get off your ass and let's get this guy got
signed here, or it's Bragman calls Altov and says, man,
(01:01:31):
I'm not getting any any push. Well, then he's like,
well then you used to stay here. I would be surprised.
I still would be surprised if it's going to happen
for Bregman to to throw away, to turn down the
five year, one fifty or six years was a sixty
one fifty six and then come back on a one
(01:01:52):
year deal. That'd be crazy. Is there any party that
goes it? Would be embarrassing for Bregman to take that, Yes,
because if you take a shorter deal then it doesn't
come across as but you could just sell it. I
wanted to run it back with the Astros one more time.
(01:02:12):
Let's go, let's run as time position, let's ride it
isn't that the time isn't perfect. I don't know. You
can spin it any rightyways. And at the end of
the day, if he wants to spend.
Speaker 5 (01:02:22):
It any way he wants to, we don't care if
Bregman comes back again.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
Here's the number one thing. If you're thinking about twenty
twenty five exclusively, don't think about twenty twenty nine. Don't
think about two thousand and thirty. Alex Bragman in twenty
twenty five makes this a better baseball team than it
currently is as we speak. Maybe that would be ideal
for the Astros and Jim Crane to do a one
(01:02:46):
year deal. That's my thought. You're not going to get
you're not worse because you bring Bregman back for twenty twenty.
Now you're better. Yeah, even if it's al du Van
left Can I can we try to soft sell you
on this a little harder?
Speaker 18 (01:03:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
Your voice, your voice, do that again because your voice
takes a deep drop and it gets a lot softer
really quick. Yeah, they'd be better even if yeah, you
can't shake that, even if El two by was doing
a great job in left field, that's much better. That's
much better. Eleven twenty nine and Sports Talk seven ninety.
It is the Matt Thomas should Row seven one three
(01:03:21):
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety want to tell you about
Affordable Tree Service. How those trees after that snow and
the ice. Oh you haven't checked on them. They're not
doing well. Yeah, that's why you're gonna call Affordable Tree
Service at seven one three six nine nine two six
sixty three seven one three six nine nine two six
(01:03:43):
six three Affordable Tree Service and Martin spoon more he
needs to hear from you because you are worried about
your trees, but yet you don't know anything about them.
Seven one three six nine nine two six sixty three.
Martin and his crew will come out evaluate your trees
and give you an estimate on what it's going to
take to make sure your trees have the best chance
of surviving the remaining winter months. Write the number down
(01:04:07):
and call him because your trees in your front yard
and your backyard deserve the TLC seven one three six
nine nine two sixty six three. That's seven one three,
six nine niney twenty sixty sixty three Affordable Tree Service.
Speaker 7 (01:04:19):
Listen to Sports Talk seven ninety on the free iHeartRadio app.
It's all your music, sports podcasts and talk free.
Speaker 2 (01:04:27):
Never sounded so good, Snean O'Connor. Live or dead? She
died recently? Right, I didn't. I didn't make it rhetorical.
It's either yes or no. She died recently. How confident'reno
a lifeline? I'm sticking with my initial assessment. She died recently.
(01:04:52):
July twenty six, twenty twenty three. May she rest, May
she rest at more recently than that, But thirty four
seven put her at fifty seven fifty six, Okay, fifty
six according to the wikip Yeah December sixty six years
born Dublin, Ireland, Shine and mattery Bernadette O'Connor. I want
to say, one of the few band musical acts ever
(01:05:18):
to appear on Sunda Night Live where she basically had
to take hers off the stage or something like that. Yeah,
she ripped up a picture of the Hope Pope. Yeah,
that's usually gonna be a well. I was in reference to,
I think the cover ups of all the molestations. So
she was on the right side of history on that one.
By the way, next month, a big super special for
Saturday Night Live, fifty years special. Oh my gosh, that's great.
(01:05:43):
I mean, look, it gets ripped on a lot because
it sucks and has for years. But I think people
of him saying it sucks for years, has been saying
it sucks for years. For twenty five years. I wouldn't
watch an entire ninety minute episode, but I go look
at the youtubes on the weekend and there's one or
two funny segments every week. It's fine. Yeah, I would
say it's fine, But you know what, for broadcast television,
(01:06:05):
fine gets it done these days. I guess they must
not be paying those people very much money. Oh are
you kidding me? Fifty it's gonna be an epically good show.
I'm still mad that you beat me in best Saturday
and Night Saturday Night Live cast members of all time.
You took Keenan Thompson in won. That's a travesty. Keenan
(01:06:27):
Thompson has been on that show, I think as long
as the show's goes, because he's got no movie or
TV career. If you're a real big star and you're good,
you move on. His career peaked with a good Burger
and when he was like sixteen and carved on a
nice career. By the way, a friend of ours shall
remain nameless, ran into him in a London night club
(01:06:48):
okay and said he was an absolute awesome human being.
I'm sure he's very nice. That's nice to hear one
of the greatest cast members of all time on SNL
Great versatility. Oohie, what up with that? Somebody voted for me?
The two people voted for you because of Keenon Thompson.
I just made myself angry all over again. What a
travesty of a voting panel that was. And it goes.
Friday Matt Thomas Show with ROS Sports Talk seven Hoy
(01:07:10):
Johnny calling us from San Diego again. Man Johnny, I'm
sorry that you don't have great sports talk in San Diego.
We appreciate you coming to the Houston, Texas iHeartRadio AP
to find us. Thank you friend. What's going on?
Speaker 18 (01:07:21):
Oh No, I was born and raised in Houston, so
I still stream you guys on iHeartRadio. But I've been
listening to you and Ross and I want to say,
summer of twenty ten.
Speaker 2 (01:07:31):
Was the first time I go Johnny.
Speaker 18 (01:07:35):
Yeah, So I appreciate you all being part of the family.
Speaking of family, please convey my heartfelt congratulations to Carly.
Speaker 2 (01:07:44):
Thank you Mary. It's belated, but I.
Speaker 18 (01:07:46):
Missed the announcement special on ESP and you know I
didn't get the invite.
Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
So she you know what I said, I said, John,
I told her, I said, Cardi, why don't you come
on my radio show and announce it? And she goes no, no,
and no. So obviously's shot. She's not a Gloriahan like
her father.
Speaker 18 (01:08:03):
I don't know she might have if she would would
have went on with the A team whenever they were
final casting.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
Oh my god, they don't even work much. What could
she She couldn't even pick a show to work?
Speaker 18 (01:08:12):
Is there never on this the third Tuesday of next month.
Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
Mane, there you go, excellent call yep, what you got
on now? Tuo bay? Uh So?
Speaker 18 (01:08:21):
All right, first off, my favorite, my favorite astro of
all time, I think Bagwell and then Bidio. It would
be like my one two three. I loved the dude
ever since I got a chance to meet him in
twenty twelve, So I don't want anybody to think I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
Hating on him.
Speaker 18 (01:08:37):
Whenever I say that him in left field is an
awful idea, He's probably just saying, hey, I'm willing to
do whatever, even including going and playing left field. It
must be a Mandela effect thing, because whenever we were
talking about parades coming in, I thought that there was
talk that he had some outfield experience.
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
But I guess that's wrong.
Speaker 18 (01:09:02):
But if that, if that is wrong, and we're looking
at shifting one of the two of them to play
primarily left field, why wouldn't we give the younger, faster
guy the opportunity to do that instead of uprooting al
Tuove from his spot that he's been playing for, you
know since twenty eleven.
Speaker 5 (01:09:20):
Right, that's why Ross's and I'm want to put words
in your mouth here, but that's why you're leaning towards
this as a bit.
Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
No, it's a bit. It's just it's probably something that. Yeah,
as as the caller Johnny says, it's something alto al
two ve, I don't. I do believe that. He said, hey,
I'll go to left field if we need to make
it happen. That doesn't mean it's going to happen. So
do you think it will? Here's the thing, guys, was
it flippant or was Jose being serious saying Oh, I
(01:09:50):
think Jose was serious.
Speaker 5 (01:09:51):
If he's really, if he really throw the through the idea,
I think he's not. I don't don't think he's being
flipping about.
Speaker 2 (01:09:56):
He's like, I want to do whatever it takes to
keep the car as much as the core here, I've
lost a lot of my core. I've lost Springer, I've
lost I've lost Kyle Tucker. I want my guys, I
want my good lineup. Alex Pragman, here's the thing that
is indefensible.
Speaker 5 (01:10:09):
Alex Bragman baked even not maybe not until June first,
but Alex Bregan makes his asterlin.
Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
Up better today than it did a year ago. With
Christian Walker, you get a significantly better first baseman. Perettis
is gonna crush at Minute Made Park other places. I
don't know, but you're gonna have a better hit, mam.
Because Kyle Tucker. I don't even count last year because
Kyle Tucker was gone for three months. But he was
great when he was here. He was great when his here,
but he's not here except in the playoffs. Except in
(01:10:35):
the playoffs.
Speaker 18 (01:10:37):
But I do think that he is willing to do
whatever he can to get Bregman back in the fold.
He's been that vocal since before the season was even
over that he's willing to do whatever. I honestly think
we need to do what we can to get him in.
I don't think that he's going to get more from
us after all of this time. The same deal alleged
(01:11:00):
Lee is still on the table that he was offered
from the beginning. So if anything, I think, Hey, the
deal is still here, you want to do it, Let's
do it. They figure out some sort of rotation to
get the guy that they got in the Tucker trade
playing time because that would be wasteful otherwise, but still
get al Tuve and Bregman and Alvarez in the bat.
(01:11:21):
But I have now run out of reasons to push
back by meetings, So I'm gonna let you guys go.
Speaker 2 (01:11:25):
Thank you, John, thank you very much. By I want
to shout out real fast the iHeartRadio app again. We
have a great friend of ours I met this past
weekend in Portland who lives in Seattle. Yes, we have
our buddy in San Diego. We have Salin lives in Orlando. Well,
we need the Northeast quadron taken care of and then
we're all set. Okay, we're a national radio show at
(01:11:48):
local with a nice local flare. We're local nationally exactly,
We're nationally local. I don't want to do a national show.
I can take you that for sure. I take the check.
You'd be surprised a little. The check is, well, you
get a lot more topics. Do you really want to
get in a deep dive of Washington Philadelphia for an hour?
And why not? I mean, I guess you could. This
is more interesting than me that I'm mean to this
(01:12:11):
fantasy that l twov is going to left field. I mean,
it beats a breakdown of you know, are we sick
and tired of the Chiefs going to the AMC Super
Bowl every year? I would be shocked if this would happen.
I don't doubt that. Al Twovey said I'll do whatever
it takes if I need to go to left field,
put me in coach. But I'm doubting that the organization
(01:12:33):
is taking that seriously and willing to play pay Alex
Bregmant unless he's willing to come back on a very
short term deal. I'm more and more as the show
moves along, I'm more and more convinced it's a short
term deal, because you would then really, has Alex moved
all this stuff? Has he sold his house? I don't
(01:12:55):
know what's going on there. Usually we've got a real
estate expert joining us in this show. True, I know
Alex works out in Phoenix in the off season, okay,
and the s also doing quite well. So yeah, they
really rebranded. Well, you don't normally rebrand if you're doing
that great. Yeah, but I mean Bragmant doesn't sell well.
In Des Moines, were like, what the name of the
(01:13:18):
Salsa del Soul soil day la soul, Yeah, de la
Garza de la Cruz Wild Soul, Wild Soul world sor
satasa that speaks to you sor tequila. No, it's not tequila.
It's just soul. It's just soul and barbecue sauce sosa
(01:13:38):
that puts hair in your chest. Oh, they got a
fifteen percent off coupon on their website. Let's go. I'm good.
He was he always he owes me in a case
of salsa, and why because he's how he's gonna take
care of it. I wouldn't have volunteers so I can
text him. But you guys are brosky, We are broskis.
But I don't want to do it right now. We're
(01:13:59):
gonna Why'm gonna text when ultimately heat decision is made.
They have a recipe for wild salt mango habanero bread pudding.
I used to be a huge bread pudding guy. Now
it's just too much. Oh my god, what what what's
not to like about bread pudding? But if the bread
is over, if it's it's just too chunky and clunky,
it's it gets in the way, get to the way
of what my f it's I would if you're gonna
(01:14:21):
go favorite puddings, what do you mean like people putting
pecans in it or something. No, just it's just too much.
It's just bread with sugar. I mean that's just a
double dog. Welcome to sugar cookies, Welcome to vanilla cake.
This would you rather have bread pudding or cake? I
mean it depends. If I'm in New Orleans, is bread pudding?
I don rather have a beigne over a bread pudding.
(01:14:41):
Oh okay, so you can get your whole chest covered
in powdered sugar. Mm yes, sir, we eat like a
rabid dog. Sports Talk seven ninety. That feels rude. Let's

LU Celebrity Jeopardy was a goat Classic Church Lady Wayne's World.
(01:16:43):
I mean there was enough stuff that you could put
a fifty year anniversary in fifty years? Yeah, I mean
do forty recently? Which when did they? Was it forty five?
Eddie Murphy came back? Yeah, Dave Chappelle was on last week.
Oh how was that? I didn't see it. I'm you
recorded it every week. No, don't know. I just used
the club I used to until I got typically really bad.
(01:17:04):
But the Colin Jost Weekend Update with a him and
Michael Chay give each other three jokes at the end
of the year where they don't read him ahead of time. Yeah,
they do that once a year. They do it twice
now they did it over Christmas's smart Now and then
Michael Jay gave Colin Yost some stuff that involved his
wife and oh yeah, it got awkward really quick, and
it was very funny. I like awkward situations that make
(01:17:28):
people laugh. Kind of the show in many regards, they
can't get awkward. We're gonna wake the strippers up. Speaking
of getting awkward, wake the strippers up. In about eight minutes,
Wake the Strippers up. News at noon Friday, Montage. Oh absolutely,
let's go. Gordon's coming at one o'clock. Who Chris Gordy?
He is, I'm headed to Cleveland. Oh that's right, Rockets
(01:17:50):
and cavalat. Guess what. You're just a part time right here.
That's fine. I almost went to hurricane coverage, hurricane snow coverage,
but you didn't know they need me. Yeah, it was fine.
The weather god said, you know what, Matt, we didn't
want to say, we want to save your tones. It
was crazy. There was three inches of snow in Houston earlier.
This was fun, you know what. And by the way,
(01:18:12):
a plus behavior. We you know what we were doing.
I can shut your bum ass up and nobody time
for that when need to applaud in city Houston. Y'all
behaved yourselves. We didn't have terribly. We had a few
rex but nothing crazy. That's good because a lot of
times people don't listen to warnings like don't go outside,
and then they go. And then some people did do that. Yeah,
but I mean they went to Miller Park where every
(01:18:33):
TV station was there doing live guard. That's fine. All right,
to the phones, we go. Let's talk to Greg in
Livingston on seven ninety eleven fifty three. Greg, good morning
to you. Thank you for holding good morning, no problem.
Speaker 9 (01:18:45):
I was just.
Speaker 4 (01:18:47):
A reminder video moved from second base.
Speaker 2 (01:18:50):
To center field. He did what.
Speaker 18 (01:18:54):
He moved from second base and played center field.
Speaker 2 (01:18:57):
Though, no and said, that's not you're making stuff up.
Look it up.
Speaker 7 (01:19:04):
I just want to remind you all that.
Speaker 2 (01:19:05):
Okay to look it up. Okay, two years for Jeff
can't wow. Huh. Yes, things you learn on the show.
Thank you man, don't be weird.
Speaker 7 (01:19:17):
Bye bye.
Speaker 2 (01:19:19):
We mentioned earlier in the show Greg, Matt's trolling you.
I'm so I would not troll him. I would like
to apologize for Matt being so rude. It was something
mentioned earlier in the show Greg, and obviously you weren't listening,
but we did talk about it. And thank you Greg
for listening to the full four hours or the time
that you're listening to us. Now. He might have missed
the first hour, Greg, give Greg a break. He's very busy.
(01:19:42):
You don't. That's the thing is, you can't miss any
part of this show, or you'll find out that Craig
that we did know that. Dude, I'm only here half
the show and I'm not sitting next to you. I
know I notice that. Yeah, yes, in two thousand and four,
I'm sorry, two thousand and three, one hundred and fifty
(01:20:03):
games in center field who at age thirty seven, and
it was.
Speaker 5 (01:20:15):
Admirable but painful. Do you know what Jeff Kent said?
I don't care, I don't care. Check cut the check.
Did you say he was rude to you in the
locker room once? He was rude of everybody?
Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
And you know what, I watched Jeff Kent during the
College World Series because you know his son played for
A and M. Yeah, he was an He was exactly
what I thought Jeff Kent would be as a dad.
What oh, he just when his when his son got
picked off, and he just gave him a little keep
your head in the game, point to the head, bring
a home run. Well, great job, You're not as good
(01:20:54):
as I am. Son. Disappoint say that. And well he
never made it into the Hall of Fame. So because
as an a hole last year the ballot can't get
the most twenty three he got forty six point five percent.
Well were his Do you have his career numbers in
front of him? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:21:09):
I do.
Speaker 2 (01:21:10):
Huh, let me pull it up. What do you want?
Five time All Star, good, MVP, one time right, one time?
How many career home runs? Four time Silver Slugger, three
hundred and seventy seven, Hall of very Good eight to
fifty five ops at second base? No gold gloves followed
(01:21:34):
Barry Bonds. I'll give him bonus points for that. I
thought he had a gold glove or two, but I
guess that's zero.
Speaker 18 (01:21:41):
M h.
Speaker 2 (01:21:42):
Hallo very Good, the Hall of very Good. We could
have a really good time, like if the Hall of
Fame is in Cooper's Town or the Hall of Fairy
Good be Omaha, that's where the college came plub Colorado.
I don't know, it's weird that it's in cooper Was
town in the first place. How about Saint Louis? Why
(01:22:03):
do they deserve it? That's centrally located. Maybe you know what.
Ryan Presley would go there. He likes he likes the Midwest.
If you've not heard Ryan Presley, his apparently, according to
John Haymond, does not want to go to the coast.
There's certain longitudes he will not pass. I think I
think Presley, and again I know Nightingale said it was
eminent yesterday nine Gales, good little goofy, but he'd be
(01:22:27):
flat out one hundred percent wrong on this, and I
don't think he isn't a business being one hundred percent.
I don't think he is. So my guest is Presley
gets moved at some point. Although he said Cubs on
the verge of acquiring Ryan Presley. That was at four
thirty four pm yesterday, and that was what five at
seventeen hours? And what is eminent eminence within the next
eight hours? Right, I would say imminent. It's like within
a couple hours, So seventeen is not accurate. Dean in
(01:22:50):
Hondo or is an Ando? You do pronounce the anhent
believe Hi? Dean? No?
Speaker 19 (01:22:55):
Hey, yes's Hondo. I have talk you all in the past.
Originally from the Houston area. Was in brenhamm in Hondo.
First of all, congrats to your daughter, Matt.
Speaker 2 (01:23:05):
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Speaker 7 (01:23:08):
We have.
Speaker 19 (01:23:09):
My daughter played college softball and one of her best
friends went up to Rhode Island pitched up there and
we went there for a game. It's beautiful, it's a
it's an awesome place. It's far, but it's awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:23:20):
I know it's too far, Like I said, I mean,
we may have to get a seven ninety bureau up
in at least a Providence metropolitan area. I'm trying to
get in. I'm trying to see if I can run
an apartment or something for when my wife goes up there.
But it's like five thousand dollars a month and I'm
not making ross money, so I can't do that. What's
your thought on ta uh?
Speaker 19 (01:23:40):
Well, first of all, you're talking about going all. I
know you got to get off, but you got Hondo
Texas lockdown, so use that on your next contraence.
Speaker 2 (01:23:47):
Yesno, Hondos sports Leader, thank you being that's cool. I
love that. Crushing it in Hondos, San Diego, Settle Host
very man. But everywhere else we're doing very well. That's
nice to hear.
Speaker 19 (01:24:01):
Yes, Okay, so if anything goes Friday, so keep your
mind open. Ross and Matt, here's what we've got. Okay,
you're gonna have to absorb this. We got mccullars in
left field, rocket arm. Okay, nobody's gonna run and he's
gonna hit as good as Jake and Chaz. Hey, come on,
(01:24:24):
he's not gonna have to throw much, so he's gonna
be he's gonna be in the lineup for about the
first two months and then you get out to Bay
back out there, so something to think about.
Speaker 2 (01:24:37):
Then we're losing hot. If that's what Hondo's bringing us,
the quality of meth and Hondo must be going down.
Can we get some Lano? Uh, we're gonna go something
like that. We're in Texas town names. Wats a hatchie?
Are we let me hear from you? Goodness? Eleven fifty seven? Oh,
thatt'swelve o'clock. We gotta wait the strippers up. Let's go,
(01:24:58):
Matt standing on the clock. Matt, come on, we're trying
to back. It didn't seem like a news at noon.
The striper way cap and we'll get the Friday intro
all straight ahead next on seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas Show, twelve o four.
Speaker 2 (01:25:16):
Age Town, good.
Speaker 1 (01:25:34):
Folding, Serve.
Speaker 3 (01:25:38):
And welcome in the third hour of About Thomas Show
with Ross Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Sports Talk seven ninety. Do people in Dallas throw out
the D Maybe they're doing something with the D. I
don't throw it up. Yeah, if you're from Dallas, are
you throwing umber DP? It's all about the cream Matt
cash rolls everything around. You've been saying that for a
long time, Crean, get the money, dollar dollar.
Speaker 10 (01:26:00):
So if you were in Guantanamo Bay and we were
trying to get some information out of him, we would
hold him down, pour Mayo down his broke to get
him to talk. I gotta wrap her up and water
her properly. I'll give her a good tip though she's happy.
I didn't know you needed to bed. I'd have given
you a bed. You're rubbing a dillober Thomas sports time.
Speaker 2 (01:26:18):
I've never I've never touched all interest in touching at all.
Speaker 10 (01:26:22):
I went to South Plano State Park and one time
they're they're all.
Speaker 2 (01:26:25):
Over the place. Now twelve, let's go which a billo rubber? No,
I ain't rubbing anybody's billo. I've been around a dillo
in a long time. Full throat Thomas. That was one
for the agent again.
Speaker 5 (01:26:44):
It's first time in twelve four months doing this show
at ten o'clock.
Speaker 2 (01:26:48):
Actually when dog ass tired.
Speaker 10 (01:26:50):
Yeah, hey, to get you more nights home with the wife,
wake it up with energy, time out.
Speaker 5 (01:27:01):
I'm not kidding anymore on that. I'm barely above the
Mendoza line. ROSSI, you're a great Matt. Let's get to
the news at dune.
Speaker 2 (01:27:17):
All right, Matt.
Speaker 10 (01:27:18):
We've got a lot of things going on to the
sports world, but it has been at least here in
Houston offensive line.
Speaker 2 (01:27:24):
I'm just kidding, No offensive line. Talking the news at noon.
Speaker 10 (01:27:27):
Today, Bob Nightingale talking about a number of things related
to the Astros. Of what we've been talking about a
lot on this show. Let's start with, well, there's a
couple of news items. Let's start with the fact that
he said the Astros would leave the door open or
leave the door a jar with Alex Bregman if he
(01:27:48):
did come back, Jose Altuve would be willing to move
to left field. Spencer Arraghatty, what do you think about
al Tuve and left.
Speaker 4 (01:27:59):
No, I can't imagine Hosey, not a second.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
But it would be crazy, you know. I mean, I've
seen there's been weird things that have happened. Yeah, I
didn't think it happened, But no, I can't imagine Hosey,
not a second. Good Nightingale saying Bregman has a chuckle.
By the way, from Spencer Age.
Speaker 10 (01:28:14):
Has serious offers from at least two teams. Well, also
Ari Alexander of a Local two, saying the Astros plus
two other teams have offered five years plus for Alex
bregmant in this.
Speaker 2 (01:28:30):
Offseason, and let's go. I mean, I don't know how
much more you can wait.
Speaker 5 (01:28:37):
I mean if unless, unless, unless Alex is really not
concerned about the timing of this and trying to figure
out where he's going to go before the startup spring training.
Speaker 2 (01:28:44):
You want to get nuts, Let's get nuts. Let's do it.
How too? May left the previous greatest second basement in
Astros history? Did it?
Speaker 10 (01:28:54):
Or at least went to outfield center and then left.
Let's get out to be there. He did it at
thirty seven and L two he can do it at
thirty five.
Speaker 2 (01:29:01):
Yeah, it will be thirty five at the beginning of May.
Jose L two ve bragman short term deal if he
comes back to yours.
Speaker 10 (01:29:11):
According to our friends at Fielding Bible, they rated one
hundred and eighty four second baseman twenty fourth season. How
many second if you log a single inning at second
base here, that.
Speaker 2 (01:29:22):
Still feels like a high number, but that's now they're
gonna there.
Speaker 10 (01:29:24):
If you log a single inning at second base, they
have ratings for you, jose l two eight ranks.
Speaker 2 (01:29:30):
Out of one hundred and eighty four, one hundred and
eighty fourth.
Speaker 10 (01:29:33):
Now, come on, that mean you know what it is
as dorky metric people, he's not the worst second basement
in Major League base But that's ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (01:29:43):
You would agree with that and we lost the step?
Is the range on us good?
Speaker 10 (01:29:47):
But when you're one eighty four on a one to four,
that means you're basically every ball goes through your legs.
Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
We can also accumulate.
Speaker 10 (01:29:53):
You accumulate more negative traits the more innings you log. Okay, well,
you know what, right, You're right man, that that's unfair.
Let's go to twenty twenty three, one hundred and seventy nine,
the second baseman rated by our friends at Fielding Bible
Hose on two day's rank one hundred and seventy nine.
These numbers are terrible. Let's say they got it wrong.
(01:30:18):
Let's just say there were a few standard deviations off.
Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
I like standard deviations. Yes, thinks the best I will
accept mid just saying. The other nugget from Bob Nightingale
is that the well he said that the Cubs led
to use his words on the verge of acquiring closer
(01:30:42):
Ryan Presley from the Astros. That was at four point
thirty four pm yesterday. Nothing reported yet, but Presley of
course would have to approve any trade Astros that has
been much talked about this offseason trying to move on
from Ryan Presley to get some payroll relief. Does that
(01:31:02):
does the press they deal have to happen first before
the Astros maybe up and offer to Bregman? Are these
are two independent deals? I think one could lead to
the other. Okay, you can see it continue on all right?
I will continue on man. As you know, we have
the Chiefs versus the Bills in a big matchup of
the AFC Championship. A lot talked about with the referees
(01:31:23):
and the Kansas City Chiefs. Pat Mahomes says, the refs
are doing their best to call the games fair.
Speaker 20 (01:31:28):
I don't feel that way. I mean, I just try
to play football at the end of the day. The
referees are doing their best to call the game is
as fair and as proper as they possibly can. And
all you can do is go out there and play
the game that you love as hard as you can
and live with the results. And so so I think
that's that's what we preach here in Kansas City. You
get new referees every year, you get new circumstances, and
you never can and you never can really tell because
(01:31:49):
every play is different. That that's what makes the NFL
so special. And so I feel like I've just continued
to play the game and I just try to win
and whatever happens kind of happens.
Speaker 2 (01:31:59):
By the way, do we know who the referee and
we know who the officials are, My guess is that
person has refereed a bunch of Chiefs gains and his
record is well about five hundred. I thought that was
the biggest overblown stat of the week of the divisional
playoffs was this guy has never lost when the Chiefs
have been lost to this guy's referee. Cause, you know what,
the Chiefs posts and records been pretty awesome the last
five years. I love this.
Speaker 10 (01:32:18):
Matt.
Speaker 2 (01:32:18):
You're you've been talking about context with stats lately, and
that's great. Well, then the context matters. Yeah, I'm all
about to call me mister context. You know they call
you a lot of things. That's not one of them,
all right, Matt, Well, let's keep it moving along.
Speaker 4 (01:32:30):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:32:31):
This isn't necessarily offbeat, but it is quite bizarre. Uh.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have lost their offensive coordinator, Liam
Cohen one day after withdrawing his name from consideration from
the Jaguars job to remain in Tampa Bay as one
of the NFL's highest paid co coordinators until Liam Cohen
secretly flew to Jacksonville on Thursday to meet with Shad Khan,
(01:32:57):
the Jags owner, and then agreed to become their head coach.
That's when when you fire the general manager Trembalki, things
tend to open up. The about face leaves the Bucks
seeking their third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. What
are you doing? I'm trying to get through the for
you tab, so moving on here? What do you mean
try to get through? It's never ending? All right? Well,
(01:33:19):
there you go, Matt. That was good. So we didn't
do a deeper dive on the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching search.
Don't you think we should do the next next hour
on that? And no, it's pretty funny though. We shall
also mentioned Jimmy Butler has been suspended two more games.
How do you feel about a guy named Liam being hired?
(01:33:39):
By the Jaguars. Feels like you should be an action movie.
Here on on a coach they I'm Cohen thirty nine
years to the new coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Oh yeah, by the way, Pete Carroll thirty nine year
old Liam Cohen signed or is the coach of the Jaguars.
Seventy three year old Pete Carroll now the head coach
of the Raiders. By the way, uh, Bill bellich Check's
(01:34:00):
first game as the coach at North Caunta will be
nationally televised all by itself apparently. Really yeah, why this
is Bill freaking Belichick. It's gonna be a huge story.
Are you kidding me? I hope they lose. Who are
they playing? Umm, you'd have to ask me that. Well,
you brought it up. Well, I can't get the four
utub but you want to let me get to it.
You can get to it, man, Go you're I know
what you're trying to see. All right, there's no new
(01:34:21):
post from Taylor. Taylor, did you very well yesterday? For
those of you playing at home, tcu oo a fellow
big twelve foo. By the way, good luck to the
Cougars playing the Kansas tomorrow. You don't see nothing the
big twelve. But but TCU is oh fellow to you? Yeah? Okay,
(01:34:43):
so I was confused and again you of H beating
Kansas tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (01:34:46):
What you got?
Speaker 11 (01:34:47):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:34:47):
Yeah, I think I got you of H in the
final four? Good? This might be the year they win
it all. Seriously, I will be I'll be like you
know how you pressure rigible like you were when the
coop when the Longhorns lost the final four? Which year?
Last two years in football, this has been depressing. Thank you.
I'll be like you, so I'll know what you feel like.
(01:35:09):
I know the expectations are high, ridiculously all right, back
on the phone as we come back. Seven one three
two one two five seven, Untie, I ask you again,
great listeners of Houston, Texas and the Matt Thomash Old
Ross are is this a bit? Or is there a really?
Links to Jose l two Bay willing to go to
left field and the Texans have a new president, need

Back to Matt Thomas and Ross Vireal Fine on Sports
Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:36:42):
Twelve twenty two. That's one. You're the only one that knows.
Keep going.
Speaker 10 (01:36:51):
Hit it.
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
That's two. Hit it. Oh my god, that's three. Drives
of Max right, yes, hit it again. Where's pregnant? Where's
he going? Where is he? What happened?
Speaker 5 (01:37:14):
The Houston Texans are moving on from offensive cordinator Bobby Slowick,
come on, l two thing I know, I know.
Speaker 2 (01:37:26):
Jamaica Ryants hopes for more out of his offense. Chris
Strausser offensive linement also out man, what a day?
Speaker 1 (01:37:34):
Thank god?
Speaker 2 (01:37:34):
All this happening on show eighteen minut great we train
off the big headline. I wow, this is a gut
feeling wrong on my part too. It is an absolute
miss on this one. I get the first time that
it entered my mind that it was a real possibility.
Where the post season comments from Demico Ryans were luke warm.
(01:37:59):
It best yeah he he didn't say, you know, Bobby's
done a great job. Bobby is Bobby that we're convinced
he's gonna be our guy. Blah blah blah blah blah. No,
none of that happened. What a day sports RV. Wow, incredible.
So you give out the phone number and I'm gonna
go get your tweet out because I need to do that.
You're gonna we'll take a phone call. You know what
(01:38:20):
You're doing. You know I gonna do that. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety is the phone
number Bobby Slowick out as the Texans offensive coordinator for
It was plenty right. It wasn't a five yeah, yeah,
Bregman's a five. Yeah. I thought that's why I thought
we were going or something. I was like, oh my god, hell,
twov is about to play left Bobby Slowick out seven
(01:38:42):
one three two one two five seven ninety. Here are
the comments that I was mentioning Demiko Ryans after the season.
You know, normally he'll coach speak about something for thirty
to forty five seconds, a six second sound bite, Demiko Ryans,
what'd you see from Bobby Slowick?
Speaker 21 (01:38:58):
I think overall with if Bobby saw some gross saw
some improvement throughout the year, and.
Speaker 2 (01:39:04):
I'm getting rid of his ass, he's out hmmm wow, surprising,
Oh me, not shocking, surprime. I'm actually not shocked, but
I'm very surprised. So maybe so he's not Gonnat. The
(01:39:28):
Jacksonville job that already some guy named Williams getting lim
Collin lim Cone has that. Aaron Glenn, Yeah, Cowboys job
apparently sounds like it's going to be Brian Schottenheimer. Yes, oh,
Buccaneers are looking for a guy. Buccaneers in a OC
they need their third Raiders need to coach, but all
the coaches does New Orleans they have a coach, yet
(01:39:50):
Raiders have an OC. Raiders have a head coach. Excuse me, Raiders? Yeah,
I think there's only one New Orleans back And see
left is Shottenheimer official with the Cowboys. No, so two
are really at this point, but Shottenheimer's closed. Bobby Slowik
is out. I am. I'm gonna say, surprise him to
(01:40:12):
very surprised. It just shows you in the in the
world of coaching that if one part of your game
is suffers like the offensive line, did Bobby Slowig zero favors?
Do I believe ross that when you have a deficient
offensive line, it hampers your play calling? Absolutely it does. Yes,
(01:40:36):
So Bobby Slowik is gonna walks into Dimico's office today
and Mimikos is, I gotta let you go. It's like,
wait a minute, Sarah gave me this crappy offensive line
and you're I'm the fault guy for this. He was
walking on water one year ago where we sit, people
were please don't go please don't go Bobby's loving Yeah. Crazy,
that's how it turns in the NFL. Why maybe he
(01:40:57):
should have taken whatever job he could have got offered
last year? You know what it does mean? It shows
you that maybe you should, Yeah, you should if somebody's offering,
which we don't know anybody ever offered a head coaching
job to slow It. I mean he didn't turn one
down to state here. We're right that we know of
that we know of. Ain't that a blip one year ago?
All right? So who do they get? Who's available?
Speaker 18 (01:41:17):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:41:17):
I'm good. I'm gonna throw out the crazy ass name.
I told you before. It was on the Twitter streets,
Chip Kelly's. We don't deal in rumors here. Lord knows
I had it ripped on Jennifer Andison and Barack Obama
hooking up. Okay, chip Kelly in Bobby slowocout? You say
what I say? Damn. Chip Kelly is a great offensive
(01:41:37):
Cordnator Lozi head coach. Yeah, probably the definitely the professional
level and really never six had any more great success
at what was he at Oregon's where he became the
great head coach? He was great at Oregon. He was
not good with the Eagles made at UCLI, is not
good at UCLA and just won the national championship with
Ohio State as an offensive coordinator. Yes, hmm, this is intriguing.
(01:42:08):
Guess he's poor Bobby Slock. He's thirty seven years old.
He'll be fine. Hmm, there'll be. I think they're gonna
go sexy on this. Women give you, I mean give

throwing it out there, Tom Herman, Oh, that is a
crazy one. Okay, I'm just saying it's right, it's crazy.

And as time went on, you know, he got better
and better and better, and you know it was learning
from you know, his past and what he did San Fran,
learning from what he's done on the defensive side, you know,
put into his own scheme, you know. So I definitely
think you know that, you know, he has a lot
of sass coming his way, and you know, I've been

honored to you know, have it with him and hopefully
you know, keep it going. So you know, I'm you know,

He's up for like six more this time too. Cannot
wait for America to get Kendrick Lamar at halftime? Cannot wait? Well,
he's got one more appearance than Barry Manilo. No did
Berry didn't? Burry Bears? No way. I'm just saying, but
how many how many New Year's Rock and eves? Did
Kender Lamar do? Buried had like ten? It's because he
(01:45:38):
was always available? Hey, not in high demand. He and
Dick Clark were close until Dick passed away. Unfortunately. May
he rest, May he rest the goat. That's one of
the catchphrases of this show. May he rest? All right?
Speaker 18 (01:45:53):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:45:54):
Gerard Johnson? Yes or no? I'm gonna say a leader
in the clubhouse. There was t I mean, is this
not coincidental? There was the report yesterday about Gerard Johnson
being considered as OC for the Jets. You think this
is Demiko Ryan saying shut your bomass up. Aeron Glenn,
(01:46:14):
He's like, he's our guy. Hey, Giera, what's up? Man? Oh,
I'm gonna go take a job with the Jets. Wait,
let me get right back to you. Call Bobby real quick.
Let me let me call you. Let me get back
to you in five minutes. Hmm. All right. Let's make
a one dollar bet, okay, Rod Johnson or the field,
and I'll let you have either side. I think it's
(01:46:38):
a good I think that's a good bet. I could
go either way. I'll take whatever side you don't want
for one dollar. No, no, while we're young. I'm sorry.
It's a good bet. It's a good bet. This usually
you make horrible ods. I know it's a small wager.
(01:46:58):
I'm going to go with Trude Johnson say I'm comfortably
either way. That's a coin flipper, all right, no, no
money bet. Will we hear Chip Kelly's name officially being
brought in about that one as an interview? As an interview,
I will say, no, Okay, let's go to the phones.
(01:47:20):
We'll talk to Greg first on seven named a little
more on the jose Al TV. We got a couple
of meaty topics today here, ROSSI not bad for a
Friday in January. Yeah, we're doing great, Greg, thanks for holding.
Speaker 17 (01:47:29):
Good afternoon to you, Yes, sir, thank you, Matt, thank you, Ross,
say great job guys today. Hey, uh look, while I
was on hold y'all, are y'all were mentioned in the
two bay thing? And then all of a sudden there
came the news of the day, right, so that's something
else I know.
Speaker 2 (01:47:45):
Goddamn t actually got something in our show, yes, sir,
So look, uh let me get let me get real
quick to what I was what ask about? So you
were talking about y'all?
Speaker 17 (01:47:55):
Ross mentioned, Uh, I'll t a be in one eighty
four out of one eighty four, and I'm thinking, wait
a minute, there's no way that's possible, because I mean,
I don't like a local guy from here, not block
Chuck Knoblock. He was a second baseman, went to left field.
He couldn't throw from second base to first you know,
So I'm like, how can they say he was better?
Speaker 3 (01:48:17):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
That was that was that was in his head. That
was the case of the year. Also is for the
twenty twenty four season. Oh for the twenty fourth Okay, gotcha, okay, Oh,
He's been great earlier in his career, but Josel tuoves
Well passed as prime defensively.
Speaker 17 (01:48:32):
Well, so, I mean your gut feeling is you don't
you don't think the move to left would be even
thinkable or not?
Speaker 2 (01:48:39):
Really, No, I think it's thinkable. We're clearly thinking about it.
I don't think I don't all of a sudden think it.
It doesn't make your ass, it doesn't make your defense better.
But remember you're also taking it. You're taking a below
average second basement and making him a below average left fielder.
So you're kind of just picking your poison here at
this point, Yes, sir, yes, sir.
Speaker 17 (01:48:57):
Well, And you know, like I said, I I like
getting in and talking to you guys is always always
a uh, you know, pleasure in all and you guys
do a great job. So hey, thanks a lot for
the time you guys. Keep up the good work.
Speaker 2 (01:49:09):
Thank you, very nice to hear from you. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven hoey, that's how I think
I think we should think about it. As much as
we love Jose the greatest aster of it all. And
his batting has slipped a little bit, probably more so
his feeling than his batting. Yes, he's still a very
good lead off hitter.
Speaker 15 (01:49:31):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:49:32):
If you, if you want to dumb it down, you
think I'm losing I'm not losing a great second basement.
To put him in a spot where he's uncomfortable with,
you're losing an average second basement at best. If you
want to call, if you really want to be honest
about it, and putting him in a new position. So
you're from a defensive standpoint, you're not getting significantly You're
not getting better for sure, maybe not getting significantly worse.
(01:49:55):
You want another data pointmtent defensive metric. He's a little
bit better here, Okay, shoot out's above average. This is
from statcast second base timeout. Explain what that means outs?
But that sounds like completely man. How many outs is
he recording above average on to an average second basement?
(01:50:16):
I mean I can break down the whole formula for
you want. If you want, I'm gonna give you the
It's the cumulative effect of all individual plays a fielder
has been credited for or debited with. Okay, okay, this
They have only thirty seven qualified second baseman and L
two a thirty six, So somebody's worse than him. Horne Polonko,
(01:50:38):
Suck it, Horne Polonko, You're the worst, not Altwove.
Speaker 6 (01:50:43):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (01:50:43):
I want you to put those metrics and shove them
up your ass, Okay, because you've never you've not given
me anything that makes me feel better. Well, what do
you want me to do? I just told you, shove
them up your ass. I don't want. I don't want
to hear any more of it. It's not enjoyable. We know, Ross,
we know you've given us enough numbers to say that
(01:51:04):
Jose al Tuobay is not where he was five years ago.
We get it, Okay, they have. Jake Myers is the
sixth also above average has Jake Myers at six. Best
center fielder that's good and covers more ground. In fact,
he covers too much ground sometimes. He and Chat are like, yeah,
the way, Kyle Tucker. Kyle Tucker looked like he wanted
(01:51:25):
to deck Jake Myers a coup, like, get out of
my way, Jake Myers like, dude, I don't. I'm not
going to hit thirty thirty. Please get out of my way.
Let me get my range metrics up and let me
catch this ball, please, Kyle Tucker. Here's another problem. Chas's
arm is not right field good. And for those of
you that don't know, you put your best arm outfielder
in right field because you do not want runners going
(01:51:47):
first and third, or you want to minimize it. If
you don't have a good guy in right field, any
base at the right field, those base runners with any
kind of speed are all going to take the extra
base that might be in itself. Another bit of concern
is that you're gonna well, McCormick can certainly has decent range.
The arm is not where it needs to be for
a right fielder, and that's what Kyle Tucker. You lose that,
(01:52:09):
and that's that's a that's a bitter pill to swallow. Besides,
whatever he does offensively, he held runners basically going from
station to station ninety feet at a time as compared
to grabbing the extra ninety feet. Well, and Jake Myers
will not be in right. He does not have a
strong heart. I'm talking about mcormick. Yea what I'm saying.
I'm also saying that Jake Myers was not the solution either.
It's what I'm saying arm wise. The reality is all
(01:52:36):
if if al two Bason left, you have three below
average arms in theory, that would be your starting outfield.
So if you're watched the broadcast on Space City, you
know they always have a green right light, yellow light,
red light. If you're watching another team's broadcast, they're all green.
Might be they're all like get on a racetrack because frankly,
(01:53:01):
who who has the best outfield arm? Right now, McCormick
is manageable and left Myers never since the injury. He actually,
you know, i'll say strongest, not maybe most accurate. You're not.
You're not. It's probably you're not like muhummited like ninety Yeah,
accuracy is not great. But in terms of teams, trying
(01:53:22):
to score on shadow flies. They're probably not doing a
whole lot of that. All right, we'll talk to Mike
about the Texans offensive coordinator situation. An interesting nugget on
a C. J. Stroud and Bobby Slowick's relationship when we
come back. Where's you get this from? Twitter verse, NFL
sources for your For you, you went to right the

Matt's really smart, he works hard, he has a good
grasp of players. He's been around the game.
Speaker 2 (01:55:06):
But you love him. We love him so.
Speaker 14 (01:55:08):
Excited for the opportunity that Matt has in front of him.
Speaker 2 (01:55:10):
For sure. This this the Matt Thomas Show. Bobby Slow
is a great Coordinator's done a great job.
Speaker 14 (01:55:18):
He's a great coach, and you know we're gonna you know,
we've done a lot of good things offensively, and I
would say as far as the second half goes in
the end, it just comes down to execution. So the
other team makes more plays than you do, then like
they're gonna win, So can we do a better job?
Speaker 2 (01:55:31):
Like? Yeah, sure, Like do better on first down? All right?
Speaker 14 (01:55:33):
Put ourselves in second and manageable, which is third and manageable,
take care of the football.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
So in the end, this league is all bought execution.
Speaker 14 (01:55:40):
It's about doing little things about controlling field position uh hum,
and firing your.
Speaker 2 (01:55:45):
Coach, Bobby Players. I am a damn fall guy, and
I don't appreciate this. Nickissario is like, how come he's
not turning John Metchi and Xavier Hutchinson into stars. You
forced me to put together an offensive line with Juice
Scrugs and nine swing tackles in your crappy ass draft picks.
(01:56:10):
Nick Cassaro is saying, these guys are great, Jared Patterson
and Juice Scrugs and oh Man Blake Fisher's unbelievable, and
Kendrick Green or Kenny Green or I can't know who
they are. These guys are amazing. Bobby Slock, how are
you not turning this offense into fifty points a game?
And Laramie Tunsel doesn't show up to the first day
of the week for week one practice? What I teased
(01:56:35):
in the last please do please from Albert Breer, we
rely on him, Yes, sir, I'd say he's pretty good. Okay,
Texans fired offensive coordinator. Sources confirm he was a hot
head coaching name a year ago. This is the juicy part.
But there was a lot of frustration some from QB
(01:56:56):
c J. Stroud himself on offense in Houston this year,
Albert Breer saying c. J. Stroud was frustrated with Bobby
Slowick coach Killer Stroud? Oh, are you going there? I'm
(01:57:23):
gonna say no, I'm gonna say maybe that was a
part of it. Spoke in the wheel. First of all,
you could be frustrated with your boss. Yeah, I'm not
getting fired. Well, it's different when you're there, you're the
star quarterback. It's a little bit different. I mean, we're
frustrated with our bosses here they don't fire. It sounds
like if Michael Berry was frustrated, maybe something old Michael,
(01:57:44):
Michael Remote? Are you frustrated? Dang, let's get out any
Mark Kenny, you're out? Do you like chili with beans
or without beans? Remote? Remote? Should Gerrod Johnson be considered
as a head coaching candidate or as an offensive coordinator?
What's your favorite jael It that's not grape. Ramon, Ramon,
have you ever coached Laramie Tunzel. He's a strong individual,
(01:58:08):
Ramo Ramon. If you ever put a face mask of
weed on? Just once in college, Larry Tunseel's been as
far as we know, he hadn't been involved in any
sort of dust ups with any sort of law enforcement
or anything. Send me a note on Twitter, just simply
say I have or I have not. Breaking news. College
(01:58:29):
kid smokes weed. If you've ever put a with of
those face mask on, it's a gas mask, I guess
if you've ever put a gas mask on to smoke weed,
don't say, hey, Matt, I did this. Just say send
me a tweet as sports mt I have or I
have not, and I'll know exactly what you're talking at.
Many people in college that did, like, you know, smoking
out of apples and doing crazy stuff like that and
(01:58:51):
bong yeah, roll ups, gummies yeah, what else? Hey, Laramie Tunzel,
he's ahead of the game, but it's a billion dollar industry.
He was legal in like twenty states. He was high
and lazy. He didn't want to roll it up. He
just wanted to put the mask on. No, it's to
get higher. It's about lazy laziness. I mean, what are
you talking about? The mask on? You go turn the
(01:59:11):
machine on.
Speaker 16 (01:59:12):
Let's go.
Speaker 2 (01:59:12):
It's extra work. What machine is he turning on?
Speaker 5 (01:59:14):
Man?
Speaker 2 (01:59:14):
I don't know. I've remember done that, so I can't
speak to this. Let's go to uh Mike, South Side
of Town, twelve fifty three on The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross. Good afternoon, Mike, what's up man?
Speaker 18 (01:59:27):
Ross?
Speaker 2 (01:59:27):
Wait? Look at you man, here's the deal.
Speaker 21 (01:59:29):

Speaker 2 (01:59:29):
We gonna get rid of the one here.
Speaker 13 (01:59:31):
Want to and go get the best ever?
Speaker 1 (01:59:33):

You're crazy. He's retired, he's happy. He's happy. Man, Kubach

Speaker 1 (01:59:45):

Speaker 5 (01:59:52):

Speaker 2 (01:59:56):
All right, thank you, Mike. Mike, did you ever do
you have a gas mask? When you called the show?
Gary Kubiak a last in the NFL in twenty twenty
as the Vikings offensive coordinator. How old is Gary Kubiak
right now? I mean we got seventy plusterers in the end.
He's only sixty three. I thought he was older. Are
you kidding me? He's only sixty three. Yeah, maybe Mike's
(02:00:20):
onto something. Bring him back, Bring them home, Bring them home, baby.
Could Gary Kubiak come back as a consultant? He left,
He left them good terms here, stop just throw it
out there. He's been out of the league. Customers, we're
cussing and discussing. He's been out of the league for
five years, and he's not going to be brought back.
Gerrod Johnson, Ding, Chip Kelly Chip Kelly Ding. It's got
(02:00:43):
to be somebody associated with Demko. He's not. He's not
going to get somebody doesn't know. I just love familiarity.
I'm with you. I'm gonna guess that this. I'll put
it this way. The the Bobby Slok firing is because
somebody is lined up god feeling. So you're saying, leave
me or not. Oh, look at this, totally have I have,
(02:01:07):
I have see it. I will not. I will not
announce who they are. Why don't you what I want you?
I'm not shaming them, just asking I want to shame
Larmie Tunseil. I'm shaving Leary Tounzel. What how is he lazy?
The lazy bong smoker? Does do lazy people get into
the Pro Bowl? No, oh my god, lazieps will commit
fifteen fall starts? Yes, pro Bowler suck it? And where
(02:01:33):
are your anti Laramie tunseel station? No, Matt Tomas, Hi,
my name is Ross. I do not hate Laramie Tunzel. Matt,
I hate him. I hate you. He thinks you're lazy
and bad at left a fat penalties and too much money. Laramie,
you do commit a lot of false starts and I'm
sorry about that, Sorry about your legal formations forgot about those.
Well it was only handing only a couple in the
first week when they were really the point of emphasis.
(02:01:55):
And you made you made tedness Howard the fall guy
and a few players are in the postseason. Well, somebody
didn't pick up that stunt. I don't know whose fault
that was. Okay, yeah, I have I have not not judging.
Oh wait. Larry Mutuntis was arrested on domestic violence charges
in an altercation with his stepfather in June twenty fifth, fifteenth.
(02:02:18):
That was also in college. You make mistake. Everybody makes
mistakes in college. My Grace's mistake was opining for a
girl that was with my sweet maid instead of me. Wow,
I'm sorry, Matt. How did that make you feel? Not happy?
How do you feel about it now? Well? Over it?
(02:02:39):
Why are you bringing it up? Then? Because we talk
about making mistakes in college, there's your mistake.
Speaker 7 (02:02:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:02:44):
Sometimes this feels like this has been something has been
chained to you. But I but I met my wife
at college in college, so it kind of equaled out.
This has been an anchor chain to your waist that
has been holding you back. I don't know why you're
why did you why did you change your voice tone?
I think you need to break that chain. Let it go.
I have let it go. Let's take a couple of
deep breaths, and you know what I'm gonna do. I
(02:03:07):
think we can move on. I'm gonna get a mask
on right now. Yeah, exactly, and reflect on. Speaking of trees,
Affordable Tree Service a ftree service dot com, please do
me a favor. Make sure those trees are their very

Speaker 1 (02:04:20):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 14 (02:04:24):
Bobby Slow is a great Coordinator's done a great job.
He's a great coach, and you know we're gonna you know,
we've done a lot of good things offensively.
Speaker 2 (02:04:31):
Yeah. I think he did. You know, he did great.
Speaker 22 (02:04:32):
You know I think he as time went on, you know,
he got better and better and better, and you know
it was learning from you know his past and what
he did in San Fran, learning from what he's done
on the defensive side, you know, put into his own scheme,
you know. So I definitely think you know that, you know,
he has a lot of success come in his way,
and you know, I'm being honored to you know, have
(02:04:53):
it with him and hopefully you know, keep it going.
So you know, I'm you know, definitely you know, on
Bobby's side and appreciate him for you know, all the
things he's taught me, and you know how great he's been,
you know, in my career so far.
Speaker 21 (02:05:04):
I think overall, but Bobby saw some grossaw some improvement
throughout the year.
Speaker 2 (02:05:12):
Anything else to make go a great coach. Love to
have him here for years. Fantastic job building up CJ.
Speaker 19 (02:05:21):
Stroud.
Speaker 2 (02:05:22):
Is that one of the great young quarterbacks in the NFL.
Speaker 21 (02:05:24):
I mean, I think overall, but Bobby saw some grossaw
some improvement throughout the year.
Speaker 2 (02:05:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (02:05:31):
He's like the type of guy like I'd be a
quarter short for the drink machine and Bobby would be like,
I got you, here's a quarter.
Speaker 2 (02:05:38):
You know, He's like that kind of guy. Very nice.
Darling of the League twelve months ago. Hot name for
a head coaching job, supposedly interviewed by the Jets possibly Jaguars.
Speaker 16 (02:05:52):
Why I always say strike when you are hot. Remember
Byron Lufwich was the flavor of the month at one point,
and he and he, you know, I'm happy Tampa. I'm
gonna stay here. And then you get passed over, and
you know, like you suddenly the next year you fall.
It's just funny. It happens all the time. I just
whenever you are in oc on the rise and teams
(02:06:14):
are interested in you as a head coach, make the jump.
Speaker 2 (02:06:17):
This whole lotty thing about I'm happy where I am,
it could come crashing back down to earth very quickly.
It worked out for Ben Johnson, who is with the Lions,
and he waited and he got thirteen million dollars like
a top ten paid coach already out of the gate
by the Chicago Bears, one of the franchises he was
willing to go to and just thirty eight years old,
(02:06:38):
but did not work out at least yet. For Bobby Slowic,
still young in the game. He's only thirty seven, fired
as the Texans offensive coordinator. Fired Aros. Yeah, we played
that earlier. I don't even know when or how I
had this this montage. Yeah fired fired, yea, yeah, fire fired,
you fired fire fire you fight Bobby Schlowick. Yeah, I
(02:07:02):
can't do the trophy Clinton to come in here. Yeah,
we need him. But do you think I'm doing either?
You could? You could do him going.
Speaker 16 (02:07:06):
You know, we looked at everything and we'll program and
we said, the Texans, what's.
Speaker 2 (02:07:10):
The offensive minds in the NFL? CJ.
Speaker 16 (02:07:13):
Stroud a generational quarterback, That's what they say.
Speaker 2 (02:07:15):
Well, Slok has been let go. We're here to talk
about it with you. It is the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross Without Matt Thomas. He is well out jet
setting with the Houston Rockets because they are traveling. Chris
Cordy gracious enough to hang out with us. You want
to get out, you want to get on, you can
a't seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety So
(02:07:37):
the first thing I was kind of speculating about this,
mister Gordy, is that this is no accident that it's
happening when it did this late in the game. My
gut feeling on this is that the Texans have a
replacement lined up, whoever it may be. Say that again,
my gut feeling is the Texans have the replacement lined up,
whoever it may be. Who do you think it is?
(02:07:59):
Maybe Jorrad Johns, maybe Chip Kelly, maybe somebody else. I
don't think that they just went out of I don't
know what Kelly. Chip Kelly is a name that has
been floated. He was the because Dmiko Ryans. He was
his coach when he was in Philadelphia, so there is
a previous relationship there. They just won a national championship
with Ohio State, right clearly they felt like it was
one year.
Speaker 18 (02:08:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:08:19):
I don't know if it's going to be Chip Kelly.
That's just the name that has been mentioned. Can I
give you another name? Okay?
Speaker 16 (02:08:24):
And this is way off the radar, oh, way off
the radar. He's never coached in the NFL before. He's
been a longtime college coach.
Speaker 2 (02:08:31):
Okay.
Speaker 16 (02:08:32):
His name is Kevin Wilson. Kevin Wilson just got fired
as the head coach at Tulsa the past two years.
He went four and eight and three and eight. Oh,
he's got a great resume. Go ahead, However, you know
what his previous stop was I.
Speaker 2 (02:08:47):
Alabama or something.
Speaker 16 (02:08:48):
He was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Ohio State
twenty seventeen or twenty twenty two. He was there for
the full duration of c J. Stroud in a Buckey's uniform. Okay,
is that what you're gonna go with? He I mean
when people said that they didn't like the offense that CJ.
Stroud is running and they didn't think that he showed
a lot of NFL traits when he was with Ohio State,
I'm just putting out there like they put up a
(02:09:09):
lot of numbers. He was a guy that you know,
he coached under Urban Meyer when he first got to
Ohio State. And okay, so what helped had a couple
of Heisman finalists when he was there justin fields, right.
Speaker 2 (02:09:19):
I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 16 (02:09:21):
I'm just just putting it out Okay, like that's it's
again no NFL experience.
Speaker 2 (02:09:25):
But did CJ like him like I would if c J.
Stroud is behind the scenes pulling all the strings, which
is possible. We mentioned the tweet from Albert Breer that
he said the c J. Stroud was among the people
frustrated with Bobby Slowick and look common sense says what
they're gonna do.
Speaker 16 (02:09:44):
They're gonna go with one of these retreads, one of
these I mean, my god, like we just we put
all these names in a hat and you just shake
it up and go. This guy's either going to be
a head coach or an OC somewhere else next year.
I mean, like Brian Schottenheimer, Hey, Ben OC, like every
team in the NFL. Yeah, that was probably gonna be
the Cowboys. Cowboys seemed to like him.
Speaker 2 (02:10:02):
Well, that's what it was because Jerry Jones is gonna
He's like, I need I need a yes man who's
gonna agree with everything I say. And that's what that's
who Brian Schottenheimer is going to be.
Speaker 16 (02:10:11):
Uh who uh Cliff Kingsbury, He's another one. Just throw
his name out there.
Speaker 2 (02:10:15):
Now. He's still in the playoffs with the Commanders, so
I think he's doing pretty well. But I would say
we talk about the Jimmy's and Joe's and X's and O's.
It's probably more Jimmy than Joe's. But maybe a different
offensive coordinator could have come up with some better ways
to cover up the warts on this offense. With the
(02:10:36):
Texans talking about the lack of pass catchers and the
offensive line run game was really good. CJ. Stroud has
been well. He was great his first year, really solid, good,
decent enough his second year, and I thought he was
good in the playoffs c J. Stroud and I thought.
I thought the Bobby slow game plan and what they
(02:10:57):
did in that first matchup against the Chargers was great.
They threw on three of the first four first downs
of their of their drives and unfortunately John Matchie fumbled
one of those, and they really moved the ball well.
They got over four hundred yards against a really tough
Chargers defense. Then they followed it up. They also did
outgain the Chiefs in that game in the second game
in the playoffs, so I feel like I thought Bobby
(02:11:20):
Slock had done enough to keep his job. So I
was a little bit surprised, not completely shocked with how much.
You know, he was under fire all season long. Was
Bobby Slowick, but no longer the offensive coordinator for the
Houston Texans, and they are searching or has the search
been completed. That's my gut feeling that something will get
announced soon. Feels like kind of like one of those
(02:11:41):
Friday news dumps.
Speaker 16 (02:11:43):
Yeah, do you go back to the Uh do you
go back to the forty nine ers? Well, who's over
there now these days? So the Shanahan Tree. So he
just left this past offseason, went to New Orleans. But
click Kubiak was down in New Orleans. Offense look pretty
good No Orleans first couple of weeks and then.
Speaker 2 (02:12:00):
Well we had a we had a caller that said,
bring Gary home. Gary Kubiak. He's only sixty three. You know.
Speaker 1 (02:12:05):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (02:12:06):
Clay Kubiak, I believe, is the OC for the forty
nine ers currently. So you got Klay Kubiak, you got.
Speaker 17 (02:12:13):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (02:12:13):
If you really want to dig deep, how about their
OC or their quarterbacks coach currently?
Speaker 2 (02:12:17):
Brian Greasy put his name in the mix. Brian Greasy,
Yeah what I thought? What is he? He's on a staff,
he's the quarter I thought he When did that happen?
I mean, good for him, I guess. And Michigan, Michigan legend.
Brian Greasy, I'm just putting names out. I see that.
Speaker 16 (02:12:39):
But ties ties to San fran and ties to Dimico.
The Kubiak family. Absolutely, Pick any of them. You want Gary,
you want Clint, you want Clay, Pick.
Speaker 2 (02:12:49):
Any of them. Gary's been out of the NFL game
for like five years. I think I'm good on Gary,
it's probably you're better, but by the way, I didn't.
I was kind of shocked to see that Gary Kubak
is only sixty three.
Speaker 16 (02:12:59):
But do you really want to go that path?
Speaker 2 (02:13:01):
Though?
Speaker 16 (02:13:01):
Do you want to go more Shanahan disciples? I mean,
if Slowik was, you know, the epitome of a Shanahan disciple,
those other guys will be too. So I'd rather almost
go a different direction. How about Kellen Moore? You know,
like some of these guys who are more again, well
some of these guys who were interviewing for head coaching jobs,
so like, if they don't get him, I'd look to
poach him and pay him as a HI.
Speaker 2 (02:13:22):
Kellen Moore get fired by the Cowboys, Let's see, then
he was the OC with the Chargers for a year,
got fired again. Oh, he's the OC with the Eagles
right now. Yeah, I don't. I don't know that he
would come over just to be the OC. That doesn't
seem like necessarily a viable candidate. All Right, we're gonna
take a quick break here on The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross without Matt Thomas, Chris Gordy is here. We've
(02:13:44):
got a lot of stuff to get to, a lot
of stuff going on with Bob Nightingale's report that the
Astros may be trading Ryan Pressing to the Cubs. Also
said Altuve would be willing to pay play left field
if the Astros, who have left the door open for
Alex Bregman to come back, and then the Texans have
parted ways with Bobby Slowick your reaction at seven to
(02:14:05):
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven ninety and speaking of
the NFL and all the action we have going on
this weekend, have you played pick six from Draft Kings yet?
How about you make the action even sweeter this weekend
as we get into the championship rounds. DraftKings pick six
gives you a shot to turn a little cash into
(02:14:27):
a lot. I got a couple of picks for you
that we're gonna spotlight just between me and you. We
did go zero and two last week, but we went
two and oh week one. We're trying to go two
and oh again this week. First of all, I like
Amari Cooper less than one and a half receptions for
the Buffalo Bills just four targets in the last two
playoff games, snap right of thirty six and thirty four
percent in those games. Chiefs have a high pressure rate,
(02:14:50):
so Josh Allen is going to be scrambling and running,
not throwing to Amari Cooper. I also think the Chiefs
offense is good enough to not make this a shoot
good but not great enough to not make this a shootout,
So you're not gonna see a ton of passes. I
think they're going to try to establish the run are
of the Bills, so I'm going with Amari Cooper. Less
than one and a half receptions, also, I understand is
(02:15:11):
a huge number. Bear with me. Saquon Barkley more than
one hundred and twenty seven and a half rushing yards.
First of all, there are books that have more yards
than that, so you're getting a good deal on the number.
With DraftKings, pick six Commanders defense more yards per contact
second worst in all of the NFL two point three
six yards per contact, third worst, rushing yards per game allowed,
(02:15:35):
fifth worst yards per carry allowed, six worth in miss tackles.
I mean, all that adds up. That's why this number
is so huge. By the way, Eagles favored by six
six and a half. Barkley called upon probably to ice
the game. I understand it's big total, I'm still going
more than Saquon Barkley one hundred and twenty seven and
a half rushing yards. If you haven't checked out the
Draft Kings Pick six app, now is the perfect time
(02:15:56):

Speaker 7 (02:16:49):
Matt Thomas, Ross Virel. It's the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (02:17:20):
Welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Without
Matt Thomas, He's going to live his five diamond life.
He is going to get on a private jet with
the Houston Rockets as they will be taking on the
Cleveland Cavaliers four game road trip, four games in six
nights for the Houston Rockets. So he is out and
Chris Gordy is here hanging out. Appreciate him. You can
(02:17:42):
get in as well if you'd like it. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. That phone number
again seven one three two one two five seven ninety,
So Gordy with you. We talked about the big news
of the day with Bobby Slowick. How about the big
news kind of of yesterday. It wasn't necessarily news, Bob
Nightingale saying it was imminent. I'm sorry on the verge
(02:18:03):
of acquiring closer, Ryan Presley talking about the Chicago Cubs.
That was like twenty one hours ago. Now at this
point Presley having a no trade clause, of course must
approve any trade, and well, we haven't seen anything there.
And then the fun one was talking about Jose Altufe
(02:18:23):
playing possibly in the left field for the Astros. This
from Bob Nightingil. The Houston Astros are keeping the door
a jar for free agent third basement Alex Bregman to return,
but are not optimistic. Bregman has serious offers from at
least two teams. If the Astros pulled it off, Bregman
could stay at third base, Estok Paratus would move to
second base and Jose l Tuve in left field. What
(02:18:45):
an image there?
Speaker 16 (02:18:46):
Yeah, I mean, I think Jose is just trying to
be nice because he does what he wants to keep
one of his buddies.
Speaker 2 (02:18:51):
But the reality of this thing is it's a business.
Like you got to move on. They moved on.
Speaker 16 (02:18:57):
They got Estak Paridis, they got Christian Walker, I mean,
Chailer Roam. I just did a video saying like the
Astro and the Astros are not alone. Other teams as
well are dead set on not entering that second tax threshold.
They just it's not it's set up to hurt the
whole reason. MLB has this. Yes, they don't have a
(02:19:18):
salary cap, but they have luxury tax thresholds that make
you pay a ton if you cross them. And it's
it's a penalty. Let's call it what it is. It's
a penalty. It's supposed to have you. It's supposed to
deter you from doing it. Now, the Dodgers, they don't
seem to care stupid money.
Speaker 2 (02:19:34):
I don't know where the Mets don't seem to care.
And then I'm there their TV deal. But here's the thing.
Speaker 16 (02:19:38):
It's all because like just because they do something stupid
means I have to do something stupid.
Speaker 2 (02:19:43):
Too if you want to compete with them. And they're
not necessard. I don't know that the Dodgers doing anything stupid.
They're just signing very good players and paying a bunch
of money. Well especially with a lot of different Now
where does that money go? Just go to MLB? The
competitive bunt. I think it's shared. I think it's shared teams. Yeah,
I think the other teams share it. Yeah, whatever the
(02:20:03):
case is.
Speaker 16 (02:20:04):
I just I mean, and that's what's funny is Taylor
is Taylor Rome's latest reporting the Athletics says, the Cubs
are also sniffing around on Alex Bregman, but they also
don't want to go over the second luxury tax. So
like you have two teams, the Cubs and the Asteris
would love to have Alex Brugman, but they also don't
want to pay the penalty it would cost to pay him.
Speaker 2 (02:20:23):
Uh, this is what a this is what Google says. Actually,
the first three and a half million of the CBT
money goes toward players benefits like retirement accounts and stuff
like that. Okay, so Kurt Shilling could get an extra
burger we need to and then have Oh, it goes
to the players. It goes to the players Association individual
retirement accounts. Half of it, Yeah, dang.
Speaker 16 (02:20:45):
I mean it's Dodgers going to be taking care of
all the former players soon with the amount they're paying
in luxury taxes.
Speaker 2 (02:20:50):
But the other half is distributed by the commissioner to
pay e clubs that have grown their non media net
local revenue over a multi year period. What I just
I don't get The fans are just so quick to
pay the man, pay the man.
Speaker 16 (02:21:03):
But you can't pay every man, so it's like you
have to pick and choose who you give the big
contracts to.
Speaker 2 (02:21:10):
Yeah, I understand. This is why I don't necessarily think
it's gonna happen with Alex Bregman.
Speaker 16 (02:21:15):
But yeah, I mean, look it, it'd be fun if
they could get him like a one year deal and
we do hashtag run it back and he comes back
and we do and plays left field for one year.
Speaker 2 (02:21:24):
That'd be the dream scenario. And by the way, it's
not our money.
Speaker 16 (02:21:27):
If so who says East suck Pariitus gets the like,
I'm like, if anything, he'd be the odd man out.
Speaker 2 (02:21:33):
Hey, bro, you're the new Marwin Gonzalez. You're just gonna
play eight different positions.
Speaker 16 (02:21:37):
Like why does he automatically get to move the second Al.
Speaker 2 (02:21:39):
Two V's gonna be the left field because Al two
ve is a horrible second basement and you would improve
defensively there. And if at least he's gonna be horrible
in left field, he's already horrible in second, so you're
not losing much. He won't be jumping up on that
wall making many catches out. No, I don't think so
he can play it off the bounce intelligent.
Speaker 16 (02:21:55):
I just I never think of a short outfielder like
everybody in they all fields at least all.
Speaker 2 (02:22:00):
Well, you know, but in theory, if he can run
down a ball, that's better than being short in the
infield where he's you know, he's always making these diving plays, like, yeah,
a guy who was like five ten, would he just
scooped up the ball. How many errors he's gonna have
throwing that ball? How many errors he's had in second base?
That's that to me, is like it's kind of not
necessarily much of a net loss.
Speaker 16 (02:22:19):
The other part of a Chandler's story here, it says
that Ryan Presley has not yet approved to rejected a
trade from the Assers to the Cubs. Presley is deliberating,
quote on a fresh start versus staying where his family
considers home. So this is kind of interesting because it's
like he had kind of a rough year in I mean.
Speaker 2 (02:22:39):
It was it was okay, it wasn't that bad. He
wasn't that bad. He had some just brutal moments.
Speaker 16 (02:22:43):
How many clean innings did Ryan Presley just come in
and go one, two, three, big bang, move out, out out.
Speaker 2 (02:22:48):
Let's go. He done it? But wasn't that many. He's
very few.
Speaker 16 (02:22:51):
It felt like he was always, you know, leadoff double
almost every time he came into the game, Like, God,
why do you have to make this so dramatic.
Speaker 2 (02:22:58):
Yeah, wasn't very good. That's why his whip was highest
it has been in a long time. One point three.
Speaker 16 (02:23:04):
Beloved in twenty two and wins the World Series, and
now it's like, yeah, everybody's kind of like he's older.
Speaker 2 (02:23:10):
Hadn't thrown his fastball much the last couple of years.
He still has that one of the best curve balls
in the game, but it's just, uh, the other stuff
has to work too with it, and it has it,
And people knew that he wasn't gonna throw his fastball.
Speaker 16 (02:23:22):
Couldn't you keep couldn't his family just stay here and
he just goes up to Chicago for a couple of
weeks and play the games.
Speaker 2 (02:23:27):
The Yeah, well, clearly he doesn't want to do that,
and that's he he has afforded that luxury. He has
a full note trade clause. That's his prerogative. He's like, yeah,
somebody's paying me fourteen million dollar. I was just gonna
figure out where it's going to be.
Speaker 16 (02:23:38):
Uh, Chandler also says the Tigers are also involved in
trade discussions for Ryan Presley.
Speaker 2 (02:23:43):
It's like it's like a J.
Speaker 16 (02:23:45):
Hinch is always looking for astro scraps to get the
band back together.
Speaker 2 (02:23:48):
What astro's leaving? I'll take think he got over there? Huh,
who's over there? Now?
Speaker 16 (02:23:53):
They were they're interested in Bragman. I'd heard that they
lobbed that called it Verlander about maybe trying to get
him back before he went to the Giants.
Speaker 2 (02:24:01):
Well, they couldn't sign Verlin or a fifteen MILLI.
Speaker 16 (02:24:03):
I mean, I think that was more of a Swan
song come take your bow here.
Speaker 2 (02:24:08):
And yeah or tire you. Well he's with the Giants now, unfortunately. Yeah,
It'll be interesting to see how it plays all out.
But it just feels like.
Speaker 16 (02:24:17):
Jayler says, according to one League source, Asters are quote
doing whatever they can to trade Presley. So like, yeah,
that scares me because it almost sounds like they might
have to throw it a prospect.
Speaker 2 (02:24:27):
That to help him, they're gonna have to pay a
bunch of the money. It also tells me they're aggressively
trying to get under.
Speaker 16 (02:24:33):
The tax right, So so what does that tell you
that when we hear reports of oh, they're still on Bragman.
Speaker 2 (02:24:39):
No they're not. They're not like Bib Nightingale. Okay, he
does have a sketchy track record here and there.
Speaker 16 (02:24:45):
But it's like, but then you're if you're Jim Crane,
you're talking out both sides of your mouth. Do what Dana,
do whatever it takes to get us under his second
luxury tax unless Ragman wants to come back, and then
then we'll pay out the out the river ending on me.
Speaker 2 (02:24:56):
Yeah, but Jim Crane's been talking out of the both
sides of his mouth for a while. As long as
I am here, the window will be open. What we're
doing a second year? Oh well, then why it's still
competitive that they wouldn't trade it out? Okay, then why
would you trade away Kyle Tucker? So when you were
trying to keep the window open as long as possible.
Speaker 16 (02:25:12):
It keeps you, it keeps you flexible for the next decade.
Speaker 2 (02:25:16):
Because you don't want to pay him money.
Speaker 16 (02:25:19):
So they were willing to pay him money, just not huge,
monstrous money.
Speaker 2 (02:25:24):
I don't think the window is nearly as as open
with Kyle Tucker off this team than on it. I mean,
come on, in this division though, there's still better. Yeah,
but it's not about this division. It's about the other team.
It's not about better being than the crappy, underperforming Rangers.
It's about winning the World Series. You win this division,
you're in, You're in the playoffs and anything. The window
is always open. Also, let's go and Tradekyle Tucker because
(02:25:45):
we gotta pay him. And how did Kyle Tucker do
in the postseason the last couple of months and two games?
I'm sorry he was bad for two games last year?
How about before that? It was like seven or eight,
nine games whatever it was. It wasn't that much. He
was great in like the twenty one run or something
like that. So, I mean he's been good in the
playoffs before.
Speaker 16 (02:26:03):
Yeah, when the stakes are not high in the postseason,
Kyle Tucker, he's gonna come through a boat.
Speaker 2 (02:26:06):
No shut up, touch moments. What's the shut up?
Speaker 9 (02:26:10):
Like?
Speaker 16 (02:26:10):
That's real talk, bro?
Speaker 2 (02:26:11):
Then, Okay, real talk is small sample sizes. You're overreacting to.
Kyle Tucker is one of the best. Yes, it is.
He's one of the best hitters.
Speaker 16 (02:26:18):
In the planet, best regular sign the cat in their
best regular season.
Speaker 2 (02:26:22):
Okay, he's been still been very good for the for
the astro. Having Kyle are you're gonna argue that Kyle
Tucker off the team makes them worse.
Speaker 16 (02:26:29):
Also, his injuries take like six months to hear better,
so maybe, well it was the worst.
Speaker 2 (02:26:34):
No, it was always a fracture. They just didn't want
to say it for whatever reason, God knows why.
Speaker 16 (02:26:39):
Best ability is availability. Put Kyle Tucker a two twenty
nine postseason batter. Hmmm wow with fifty three strikeouts.
Speaker 2 (02:26:47):
He was young for a lot of that. And then
while he was super bad the last couple of years
and a very short sample size eight home runs twenty
it runs bat in He's got eight home runs. That's good.
Runs of the postseason that's not nothing.
Speaker 16 (02:27:02):
Sixty four postseason games he's got eight. Dude, you're supposed
to be an m VP candidate. He was like twenty
years old for some of that. Give him a break.
Speaker 2 (02:27:10):
Man.
Speaker 16 (02:27:10):
You are Kyle Tucker apologists.
Speaker 2 (02:27:12):
Okay, Kyle Tucker's really good. I mean, are you? I
don't even know what you're talking about. He was just
traded away prospecting two major leaguers and the guysat regularly.
My god, you're calling Kyle Tucker the Dan Marie, You're ridiculous.
Do you know how ridiculous?
Speaker 16 (02:27:28):
I could cut off dozens of posts Jordan postseason momentary when.
Speaker 2 (02:27:36):
They won the World Series in twenty twenty two, he
hit one ninety in the playoffs. Yeah, they weren't any
good poste. Yeah happened. So I'm saying anybody can be
bad for any given amount of Kyle Tucker is still great.
Speaker 16 (02:27:50):
His most memorable postseason moment is catching the final out.
Speaker 2 (02:27:53):
Of the great in the fail that.
Speaker 16 (02:27:58):
Chad McCormick makes that cat.
Speaker 2 (02:28:00):
Chas mccork maybe makes that catch, but he slows up
so he can make a diving catch for it.
Speaker 16 (02:28:05):
Stop back off, let's space, we get it. Please, somebody
get in here. I don't want to talk to Gordy anymore.
Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
Speaker 7 (02:28:14):
Lunchtimers, Lunchtimers, It's the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (02:28:23):
We find interesting stories that per outside the state of
Florida and share them with the people of hust.
Speaker 2 (02:28:37):
It's time for non Florida. I'll stid for non Florida.
Speaker 6 (02:28:54):
Storm on the coast to coast will grade strange and.
Speaker 2 (02:29:02):
No alligator tails, but.
Speaker 6 (02:29:05):
Something that will make you smile.
Speaker 1 (02:29:10):
It's time for laugh from far and wa.
Speaker 12 (02:29:17):
In this crazy world.
Speaker 1 (02:29:20):
There's nowhere.
Speaker 2 (02:29:26):
All right, folks, It's that time a week where we
bring you stories that are not from the state of Florida.
Man calls him low hanging fruit. Quite frankly, I love
non story and I love Florida stories, but he wants
to put a new twist on the Florida mans segments
and make it none Florida stories. And well, this is
(02:29:47):
where we bring those to you, Gordy, with you as
our guest. You may start if you'd like.
Speaker 16 (02:29:54):
Oh, I take us over to Sydney, Australia, as there
is a an endangered plant that emits the smell of
decaying flesh and it's drawing hundreds of devoted fans to
a greenhouse. Devoted fans in Sydney, fans wait in a
three hour line to get a glimpse and a smell
(02:30:19):
of the blooming flower, a fragrance that evokes quote gym
socks and rotting barbine.
Speaker 2 (02:30:24):
Christ.
Speaker 16 (02:30:25):
It's a tall, pointed and smelly corpse flower.
Speaker 2 (02:30:28):
Wow.
Speaker 16 (02:30:29):
Where the plants are found in the what Sumatrin rainforest
fans call it Patricia, a combination of the name Patritricia, Patricia,
and Putrid. The followers call themselves Patricians. But for a
week she has graced a stately and gothic display in
front of a purple curtain, where fans have been flocking
(02:30:52):
to get a whiff of her. They're only thought to
be three hundred of these plants in the wild, and
fewer than a thousand, including those in cultivation. But uh yeah,
fans flocking to go get a smell of a plant
that smells like one more time, Jim.
Speaker 2 (02:31:08):
You said this is an Australia and.
Speaker 16 (02:31:09):
Rotting garbage in Sydney, Australia. All right, you people are sick.
What the hell's going on down? It's like they don't
smell my finger, Like I.
Speaker 2 (02:31:18):
Talk to Jack Landale about this. These people should be embarrassed.
Speaker 16 (02:31:21):
Dude, this smells awful. Look smell it and know it's
like what, No, you just told me it smells awful?
Wh would I want to smell it?
Speaker 4 (02:31:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:31:26):
Hey, man, did you try these egger eating at a restaurant? Hey?
These refried beans taste crap. I'm good, appreciate you, all right,
I will go next and uh, Gordy, are you aware
with the life and times of Hans Zimmer? H yeah?
Speaker 9 (02:31:44):
Did?
Speaker 2 (02:31:44):
Uh?
Speaker 16 (02:31:45):
Was he Star Wars?
Speaker 2 (02:31:46):
No, that was John John Williams. Hans Zimmer did Like
The Dark Night, he did Inception. He's worked with, uh,
you know, Interstellar, Guys, Gladiator, Lion King. Dude. He's a
composer and course most famously known for his film scores. Well,
apparently Hans Zimmer may have his biggest task yet, as
(02:32:11):
the Oscar winning composer has been asked by Saudi Arabia
to work on a new version of its national anthem,
as senior official has said, as the kingdom steps up
in image makeover. Apparently a pr for Saudi Arabia not
great right now, as he has been offered to work
(02:32:32):
on the anthem, which is known as ash al Malik
translated to Long Live the King, written in nineteen forty
seven by the Egyptian composer Abdul rachmannl Al Katib, so
the version would be changed and Han Zimmer apparently working
on his biggest project yet, trying to rework a national anthem. Yeah,
(02:32:54):
don't get that one wrong.
Speaker 16 (02:32:56):
Yeah, you don't get it to live in infamy you
know what, you don't want to put one out and
they go, oh, they really didn't like that.
Speaker 2 (02:33:03):
Funny if he just used the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, Eh,
pretty good one Dunn gets the people going.
Speaker 16 (02:33:11):
It actually made me start thinking, what if Trump says,
Hans Zimmer, we need you to rewrite the national anthem.
Francis got Key's a little old, outdated.
Speaker 2 (02:33:20):
It doesn't have my name in it.
Speaker 16 (02:33:21):
Golf of America national anthem.
Speaker 2 (02:33:24):
I like it. Maybe that could happen. That could happen.
There you go, Hans Zimmer apparently going to rework the
Saudi Arabian national anthem? Is he signing on to do it?
Apparently anything? I'm gonna guess. They cut him quite a
big check. So why every boxing match in UFC and
MMA and all this stuff is all in Saudi Arabia?
(02:33:44):
A Ronaldo is making like two hundred million dollars a
year to play in Saudi Arabia. They get some cash
over there will live golf action, Yeah, live golf, And
now Hans Zimmer Saudi Arabia is taken over. Is he
gonna write lyrics or is it just gonna be music?
I don't know if it's gonna be lyrics or music.
He's a composer. I hope he just writes lyrics to
the Dark Knight.
Speaker 16 (02:34:03):
Theam If Saudi Arabia said, we want to launch a
Houston sports podcast network, Cross and we want you.
Speaker 2 (02:34:09):
We're gonna pay you a million a year. Would you
let's go? Okay, what's up? Well? I would do good
things with my money.
Speaker 16 (02:34:17):
Well, but I'm just saying those people that are like, yeah,
self righteous about it, I would.
Speaker 2 (02:34:21):
I wouldn't take blood money. Well, after I got my Bugatti,
I would. I would figure something out. Be fine, give
some of the leftover money to start, yeah, homeless charities, whatever,
the starving struggling child people. It is fine, all right,
Connor McGovern. I know somebody's in there talking to you.
Tell them to shut their bumb ass up. Tell him
(02:34:42):
you need to go on air because you are next
up on non Florida stories.
Speaker 23 (02:34:49):
Somebody called Inguardian said that the plant was at the
Houston Museum of Natural Science in a bunch of bunch
of people lined up to see a.
Speaker 2 (02:34:58):
Bloom and hadn't go smell it. Yeah, that's disgusting, So
Ronald called it and rotting.
Speaker 16 (02:35:04):
Flesh well, not really interested to check.
Speaker 2 (02:35:06):
I'm going to pass on that one.
Speaker 23 (02:35:07):
Well, for my on Florida's story, we're going to go
to London where Brenton Naylor. He's from North London. He
was awarded an over six thousand dollars payout from police
after being wrongly accused of masturbating at a woman on
a boat.
Speaker 2 (02:35:21):
He was wrongly accused. Censor yourself. He was pleasure. It's
a scientific word. Connor is a man of science, so
that is a scientific word.
Speaker 23 (02:35:33):
Naylor was arrested over the incident after being identified by
Metropolitan Police, and all his neighbors saw that he got arrested.
Even though he was wrongly arrested and was released quickly,
the damage to his reputation was already done. Naylor says
that the police's incompetence in arresting him for indecent exposure
that he did not commit has made him the subject
(02:35:53):
of verbal and physical tax Ever since. He claims he
has been assaulted and a victied from his home and
even banned from his favorite pub. Is being handcuffed by
six officers at his front door.
Speaker 2 (02:36:04):
Oh Man.
Speaker 23 (02:36:04):
This was arrested after police released an image of the
suspect who was pleasuring himself on the bus, and somebody
anonymously reported him, maybe one of his enemies. It was
only after he had been custody for more than seven
hours that a senior officer looked at him and realized
he didn't resemble the suspect at all. Naylor hired lawyers,
suit and then settled out of court for over six
(02:36:25):
thousand dollars in damages and legal costs. The Police Press
Office said it was not aware of any further arrests
over the incident on the bus.
Speaker 2 (02:36:33):
You imagine that damaged your reputation, Like, hey, aren't you
that guy there was h you know Wnning on the bus. No,
it wasn't me.
Speaker 16 (02:36:41):
During COVID didn't an apple with the CNN guy. He
was on a zoom call and oh they were like, John,
your camera's still on, buddy, hmm. And he somehow survived that.
Speaker 2 (02:36:54):
Oh was he He's going to Solo Poundtown.
Speaker 16 (02:36:58):
That happened a lot during and a lot of people
didn't realize their cameras and microphones were on. Yeah, always
assume the camera and the microphone are on.
Speaker 2 (02:37:06):
It used to happen to a certain a Houston reporter
all the time names Ryan with uh bark Merman. What
was the bar hey, turn off?
Speaker 9 (02:37:16):
Turn it off?
Speaker 2 (02:37:17):
You're off mute.
Speaker 16 (02:37:18):
Wasn't there an old play by play guy that took
a selfie in a mirror?
Speaker 2 (02:37:21):
Ah? Right, we don't need to talk about that either.
Fun that note, We're gonna take a break. You're on
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas. Non
Florida stories, great as usual. Final segment coming up. What
are we gonna talk about? Well, probably the news of
the day. You can get in quickly if you'd like.
(02:37:41):
Its seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
But the final segment of the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross is next after the very short break. Don't go anywhere.
The Houston Sports Buffet is open. How a responsible radio host,
and I give you sizzling hot fire takes on this lunch.
But the Matt Thomas Show, I ain't no sir, I'm
a Golden Corral on seven ninety. All right, it is
(02:38:06):
a Friday here on the Matt Thomas Show with our
George Jones Friday staple. As we were winding down, I
was reading a story from Jonathan m Alexander, friend of
the station who put out a story for the Houston
Chronicle talking about the firing of Bobby Sloak. According to
(02:38:28):
his story, it was Demico Ryans's call at the end
of the day, so slowik out, who is in? I
suppose we shall see. Also, it sounded like, according to
this report from Jonathan m Alexander that the thirty one
to two game against the Ravens is where Bobby Slowack
(02:38:51):
really became under fire as the Houston Texans oc Which
game is it? Thirty one to two loss to the
Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 16 (02:38:59):
Yeah, I mean, especially on Christmas Day, nationally televised audience,
everybody watching on Netflix, no competition, you were going up
against anything, so it was you were prime and central
in that was awful. That's that's what makes this interesting,
is you know they said or was it I I
(02:39:20):
was reading on Walter Football they were kind of saying
like there was no creativity and they led the league
in running the football on first and second downs. Now,
part of that might be so bad at pass protection,
and that's the.
Speaker 2 (02:39:36):
Thing that well, let's see, our offensive line is terrible.
We have a super high pressure rate and there's blowing
blocks all over the place. Let's pass every down. That's
not a good idea, of course not. We have Joe
mix and you're trying to establish a run. So I
understand there was a lot of criticism for him and
how much they ran the football. But the alternative was
every time they tried to pass the ball, there was
a mega high pressure rate and they were blowing blocks
(02:39:58):
all over here. Here's what they said.
Speaker 16 (02:39:59):
By the way they give out grades for coaching changes, Okay,
they give us an eight grade.
Speaker 2 (02:40:03):
Okay, Walter football, So what a different was the one
that was stealing stuff from Lance earline? Was that somebody else?
What a difference to your makes.
Speaker 16 (02:40:10):
Bobby Slowick was a hot head coaching candidate year ago, and,
unlike Ben Johnson, ruined his coaching stock so much that
he was fired. He did a poor job with the Texans.
His predictable play calling constantly had strouden third and long situations.
Slow called runs on first and second down at the
highest clip in the NFL, and he didn't straight away
from his strategy. Even if Joe Mixon was sidelined. He
(02:40:32):
still don't we gotta run the football. Yeah, And they
said even if the team was trailing in the fourth quarter,
they still ran the football first and second downs.
Speaker 2 (02:40:41):
Passing the ball when you have a bad offensive line
fifty times is a bad idea too. So I kind
of damned if you do, damned if you don't, if
you ask me. Also, in this Jonathan Alexander report, some
people inside the building thought the Texans could part ways
with Slowk as soon as their open week in December. Well,
that was rumored.
Speaker 16 (02:40:59):
I thought, you know that that wasn't the craziest thing
people were floating out there that maybe they could have
made that move before the playoff, you know, like let's
have somebody else call the plays going into the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (02:41:09):
Yeah, there you go. Houston chronicles some good stuff there,
and we'll see what happens with Bobby Slowack now out
as the offensive coordinator. And like I said, that happening
this late in the game, where you think Demiko Ryans
is hoping he was gonna get hired away, and now
that now that basically every job is pretty much closed up,
where is he He's like, come on, Bobby, just get
(02:41:30):
hired away. Maybe maybe it wasn't Demko Ryan's head that
he was going to fire Bobby. Suckers like, oh, man,
if somebody could just hire him away that way I
don't have to do it, that'd be great. And now
they're like, oh, well, I didn't get the Jags job,
didn't get the Jets job. Interviewed from both of those
didn't get a job last cycle. I guess we have
to do what needs to be done. Bobby Sloak, you're out. Look,
(02:41:53):
it's this is what's best for the time. And the
underrated on line coach out too. So oh yeah, you
need a new online coach, you need new OC. But again,
do you go back to that well of the forty
nine ers tree? You just go find somebody completely different,
you know, find somebody like a completely different philosophy, somebody
from a different a different walk of life. Oh, somebody
(02:42:14):
who's not even uh like no to Steve. Yeah, just
somebody completely out of the tree. Okay, I'm just putting
out it's just been a good OC. Just put on
a name of somebody who's never cook any He was
a yeah, like you said, he was a hot coaching
name a couple of years ago. And then, speaking of Jags,
Jaguars got their new head coach, Liam Cohen. Yeah, Liam Cohen,
(02:42:38):
who told the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All right, guys, I'm
gonna sign back with you. Then they fired Trent. Balky's like,
wait what all right, I go to the Jaguars and
then they like in this in the middle of the night.
Apparently got in an interview another interview with the Jaguars,
and then they hired him.
Speaker 16 (02:42:52):
Liam Cohen was he was came from the Rams Tree,
went to the Kentucky a few years ago to go
be their OC and that was the year they had
Will Levis came over from Penn Stats and Will Levis
had an awesome year. Kentucky had search back quarterback play.
He went, oh my god, look at this, he's a genius.
He gets hired back by the NFL, jumps back to
the Rams. It kind of goes okay, but he decides
(02:43:12):
to jump back to Kentucky the year later and Devin
Leary is his quarterback and that was not good. Devon
Leary was not productive at all. So Liam Cohen's like, yeah,
this return to college didn't really work. Let me go
back to the pros. And then where was he this
year OC in Tampa Tampa. Yeah, and look at Baker Mayfield.
One year at Tampa well, I.
Speaker 2 (02:43:29):
Mean yeah, Baker Mayfield was good the year before too
with what was it Dave Canalis he got hired to do,
but the Panther. He's a savior for Trevor Lawrence. I
don't know he's got. Doug Peterson was supposed to be
the savior. Urban Meyer was supposed to be the savior.
Savior number three for the Jacksonville Jaguars. We'll see how
this goes. He was the Liam Collen was the offensive
coordinator in twenty seventeen at Maine and now he's an
(02:43:52):
NFL head coach thirty nine years old.
Speaker 16 (02:43:55):
Again, he got the most out of Will Levis in
Kentucky that year.
Speaker 2 (02:43:58):
But that's true. Maybe he was feeding in may before
every snap. That would be Adam Lan's recommended. That's what
Trevor Lawrence needs for man. Speaking of Adam Clanton, he
is up next with Adam Wexler. They are known as
the A Team. My name is Ross v Real saying well,
thanks to Matt Thomas for hosting it three out of
the four hours. That's good than he does some days.
Thanks to Christapha Gorty for coming in for the last
hour to appreciate you. Thanks to Connor for McGovern for
(02:44:20):
being here for the entire time. Thanks to all of
you who listened, called, tweeted, got involved in the show
in any way. I do appreciate you. But as I said,
it is now time for Adam and then another Adam.
They call themselves the A Team and they are coming
up next. Don't go anywhere, keep it here on Sports
Talk seven ninety your home for your home teams.
