left and behind him for Jalen Green gets an Adams screen.
Jalens for the baseline right to contest a tough two
ball on the way and good that snaps that long
(00:43):
double digit street for the Nets. Jalen's first basket of
the third baseline left. Shengun's gonna split left, turn right,
go to the front zone or missed the leat because
his own rebound and then dun't sit down on the
right hand.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
There you go, and just like that, it's.
Speaker 5 (00:56):

ninety seven ninety six, Thompson lost the basketball straight away.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Three Russell yes, Oh my goodness. Now with three point
four seconds repeating.
Speaker 6 (01:23):
Three point four seconds ninety nine ninety's seven Brooklyn, Thompson
looks to Green at mid court, top of the arc
for the win three pointers side rim left, and.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
It's no good.
Speaker 5 (01:37):
And the Nuts come up.

Speaker 7 (01:46):
And I've beating the Rockets for the second.
Speaker 8 (01:49):
Time in four days?
Speaker 4 (01:59):
What was that last night? From your Houston Rockets in
Brooklyn down four with nine and a half seconds to go,
two threes, giving up with an amend Thompson turnover sandwich
in between, and they lost to the Nets ninety nine
to ninety seven to lose their fourth straight.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Hello, and welcome into a Wednesday edition of The Matt
Thomas Show with Ross Without Matt Thomas.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
He is out traveling. That little bit of background know
as you hear that is our good friend Chris Gordy,
who is joining us from New Orleans, is going to
join us throughout the duration.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
He's gonna bring us some great guests. He's going to
set the scene for us down there in Nola. Gordy,
how are things And did you do karaoke last night?
Speaker 5 (02:43):
No?
Speaker 8 (02:43):
No, this was this is a business trip. Ross. There's
no there's no playtime here. It's uh, it's all serious. No,
it's uh, it's it's crazy. I mean, this thing. We've
been to Ragio ros so many times. It's gotten too big.
It's I'm almost glad we didn't bring the whole station in.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Oh yeah. The guy that's there says he glad that
nobody else is there. I can hear you.
Speaker 8 (03:02):
It's it's the problem is they're now calling it media row.
It's every podcast one of the NFLPR guys. He's like,
it's ridiculous. He goes, we got these you know podcasters
who have like ten views, you know, they have a channel,
and it's like, you know, it's it's get it's getting
a little bit over over the top. Now.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Hmmm, all right, Well you were just setting up a
joke that man Thomas would make on a tea But
I'm not gonna do that, Cordy. So yeah, So, like
you said, you've been there for years and years and years.
Is it still in a big, sprawling ballroom?
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Uh? What is it?
Speaker 8 (03:36):
Yeah, it's the Convention Center in New Orleans. It's one
of the big balls. But I mean we're we're we're
actually table six inside of radio row, so we're like
right near the front. We're in a really good spot.
But there's three hundred tables, so it's I mean, it's
just inside, but it's it's cool sitting around here, like
Jaylen Milroe just walked by the Alabama quarterback Harry Douglas
from from ESPN, like Thomas Morsteat sitting to the right
(03:59):
of me. I mean, it's cool to just look around
and see it's a lot of big name guests and
all this. But uh, what we tried to do here,
Ross was only bring you the most relevant good guess.
So Jay Glazer's actually gonna join us next segment, so
that would be fun.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
The J Glazer? Yes, okay, the J Glazer joining us?
What else we got later on?
Speaker 8 (04:18):
Chris A. Thompson is slated to stop by. Uh we
I booked this one just because of you.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (04:25):
He is current Saints linebacker Jalen Ford, but known better
as Great Longhorn linebacker Jalen Ford, so well, uh, we'll
talk some Longhorn stuff with him, but uh, and then
whoever else. I mean, we're we're kind of after Jay Glazer.
We're kind of open for two hours. So my goals
is just kind of grab somebody and throw them all
with us.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
Okay, that sounds great.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
So Chris Corey's gonna be here down in New Orleans
for the Super Bowl radio row, and then we're gonna
be with you folks. You want to get in, you
can seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
So we're gonna be mixing in a lot of football
stuff and some basketball, baseball whatever.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Gordy, Uh, were.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
You able to catch much of the Rockets game last
night at the very least? I imagine you saw.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
That disaster class of closing a game in Brooklyn last night.
Speaker 8 (05:10):
Yeah, it's not good man, that I mean, look, if that,
if that happens a few weeks ago on a one off,
it is what it is. But it's compounded that you're
now in a four game losing streak, You're now third
in the West. You've been holding out that number two
spot for almost all season. You've got the Memphis Grizzlies
have now jumped you, and the Denver Nuggets are knocking
on the door. They're one game back you and the
(05:31):
Luca Lakers are now just two games back. I mean
this things get a little bit too close. We've been
loving this run the Rockets have been on and man,
number two seed in the West, awesome. Now this slide
and it's and it's a slide because you've made stupid
mistakes like it's you know, you had a chance to
put to win that nixt game. You had a chance
(05:52):
to win this game last night, and.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
The Grizzlies before that, and the Grizzlies game.
Speaker 8 (05:57):
I mean, these are games that might come back to
haunt you.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Yeah, that's what I'm worried about.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Two is that, as you mentioned, it's super tightly compact
in the Western Conference, and unfortunately, you know, we can
complain about it and be like.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Oh man, why is the West so tough? It's like
this every year? Well, it is what it is. That's
what it is every year. And we are already above
our expectation level with the Rockets. So I'm not ready
to call this season a failure or anything like this
if they don't finish in the top four. But to
the level of which they are capable, they are not
living up to that right now.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
And last night, to me, there was no excuse. I
can kind of excuse the Knicks game. The Grizzlies games too,
It's like, all right, those are one of eighty two.
But last night against a terrible Brooklyn team that is
trying to lose, that is tanking, that is holding their
guys out, and yes, you were down Fred van Vliet
and still down Jabari Smith Junior. But the Rockets, as
(06:46):
Emiodoka said in the post game, they only played half
a quarter of the whole game. The rest of the game,
they were just kind of going through the motions. The
energy wasn't there. They didn't look like they wanted to win.
It was to me, it was almost like the basketball
gods saw the Rockets try to steal that game.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Albrynching Goon scores fifteen points in the fourth and they're like, oh,
you want to steal this game, You want to not
put in your full effort. No, we're gonna yank get
away from you because you didn't deserve to win.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Rockets didn't deserve to win last night. It was a
freak crazy thing. I mean, I don't know what the
percentages are of a three getting knocked down by Keon Johnson,
a turnover from Amn Thompson, careless turnover by a men
Thompson by the way, and then another three from D'Angelo Russell,
all of those things stacking up. The probability is very low.
But you still didn't deserve to win that game.
Speaker 8 (07:33):
Well, he had a lead, so I mean that's silly.
He had a late lead, so you gotta you gotta
find a way.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Literally And men Thompson had a five second violation the
other game, was it against a Knicks or whoever?
Speaker 4 (07:45):
And then he does this. I mean there was like
three seconds he could have they could have called a
time out and got reset, and he just throws the
ball and Dylan Brooks's general direction and throws it away.
Speaker 8 (07:55):
But is this maybe who they really are? I mean,
maybe they were overachieving. It's for so much a first
part of the season, and now that we're starting to
see that the youth is still you know, they're still flawed.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
We will answer that question as we go along here
on Sports Talk seven ninety and the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross. Chris Gordy is out at media Media Row
as they're calling it now at the Super Bowl. My
name is Ross v Rellen Studio here in Houston. Jay Glazier,
NFL Insider coming up next here on the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports
Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
To a Wednesday of a Super Bowl week edition of
The Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Without Matt Thomas. He
is out traveling at the Rockets. They lost last night
to the Brooklyn Nets. They will be taking on the
Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow. As this hellish stretch in January in
February continues, eight games out of nine on the road,
(09:03):
just one at home against Brooklyn that they lost.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
It's been difficult for them.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
But Chris Gordy is out in New Orleans and we
can go into football mode and we will shortly. I
believe Jay Glazer should be coming by in a little bit, correct.
Speaker 8 (09:15):
Mister Gordy, Yes, he is wrapping up. Another interview will
be coming over in just a second. And it's it
is funny. It's when you talk about like all the
different faces and big media personalities and all this. Jay's
probably one of the most recognizable faces, right, Like, there's
no deny, Like there's some players you'll see you go,
is that I don't know? Is that this guy? There's
no denying when you see Jay Glazer? You know you
(09:37):
know that too, Yeah, I think for sure.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
And and the thing too, is like the NFL and
we watch we watch them every Sunday. They're all wearing helmets,
so it's like it's not like it's not like Major
League Baseball where they're they're they're run helmets with face masks,
and there's fifty three on the team. So usually, you know,
unless you're the superstar and probably the quarterbacks most recognizable,
it's a little bit can be a little bit different
(10:00):
cult to spot people at radio row.
Speaker 8 (10:03):
Yeah, yeah, Jay's walking over. He should be here just
a second. So yeah, man, there's a lot of NFL questions.
I definitely want to get his thoughts on on the
uh Texas new OC and a bunch of other stuff.
So he's put on the headset right now. He is, Hey,
he's got an entourage with him. Jay Glazer joins.
Speaker 7 (10:19):
This, I was just saying, babyshitters, not entourage.
Speaker 9 (10:21):
I was just saying, Jay, I'm famous enough to have
an authoorage, but I need a lot of babysitters.
Speaker 8 (10:25):
I was just saying, there's there's a lot of people
here on Radio Rown and we've been coming for so
many years that you go, is that so and so?
I don't know if that's so and so? You're one
of the most like unmistakable. That's Jake Glazer when you
see him, you know.
Speaker 7 (10:36):
That hurricane glaze coming through man.
Speaker 9 (10:38):
Yeah, first and foremost shaying I'm the best looking guy here.
That's what I'm here. Yeah, well absolutely, Sometimes people go,
is that Brad Pitt, I get that a lot.
Speaker 8 (10:47):
First and foremost, I know you're from l A, and
you go, I'm from No No, I live in LA
and you have been uses in LA and all that is?
Everything good with with you. Fires and all that.
Speaker 9 (10:58):
We my wife who's right over here, Rosie, we uh
we evacuated three times in about five weeks. We had
three different fires. The last one obviously scared the crap
out of us. Our old house burnt to the ground.
We got out of it.
Speaker 7 (11:11):
We have a new house, which fantastic.
Speaker 9 (11:13):
But we were we were uh yeah, we were we
were evacuated for quite a while, and then when we
got back, uh, we kept kept turning our power off.
And but I got a lot of friends who've lost
literally everything and like everything. And actually, my wife did
a beautiful thing. My wife rose over her own clothing
(11:35):
stores called Varga, and at Fox we had I think
eight women who lost every and when I said, you
lost everything, like.
Speaker 7 (11:44):
The clothes you have on your back is all you have?
Speaker 9 (11:46):
Yeah, and she actually outfitted uh everyone at Fox who
did lose everything full wardrobes.
Speaker 7 (11:52):
Again.
Speaker 9 (11:54):
They I don't know if you saw it, but a
couple of weeks ago, you know, we have the street
from our house one hundred yards it looks like a
military base goes on for a.
Speaker 7 (12:03):
Mile and a half.
Speaker 9 (12:04):
Fifty four hundred firefighters straged. And I started going down
and I'm bringing down. I'm part of this company called
Jimmy Barr's Protein Bar, So I started bringing that down.
I started trying to give mental health talks to them,
just to lift them up anything. And then finally one
day they're like, hey, you know we really need besides
energy drakes and powery this and that.
Speaker 7 (12:23):
We just want to watch football. Yeah, And I said
I know someone who can make that happen.
Speaker 9 (12:27):
And I called the CEO of Fox, Eric Shacks Fox Boards,
and I was like, dude, these guys just want like this.
Speaker 7 (12:33):
Escape when they're on break.
Speaker 9 (12:35):
And by the way their shifts were going first, there
are forty eight hour shifts. And thinking about this too,
the bravery of these people, like they left their homes.
And we saw people firefighters in that area from Israel
who flew in from British Columbia.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
From my wife from his tiny town and idol called Melbourne.
Speaker 9 (12:55):
We saw firemen from there, from Wyoming, Colorado, you name.
Speaker 7 (12:59):
It is the worst of times brings together the best
of people.
Speaker 9 (13:02):
But actually in a day, Fox got ten TVs put
up there for them to watch all the.
Speaker 7 (13:09):
Playoff guys, not just Foxes.
Speaker 9 (13:11):
Yeah, and I ended up doing up my hit from
down there, and I had Dan Campbell and Dan Quinn facetimed.
Speaker 7 (13:16):
The firefighters before their game. That's what's pretty cool. Yeah,
I appreciate you ask.
Speaker 8 (13:21):
Yeah, yeah, I just I knew, you know, we build
everything I hear about, you know, la, Oh, that's crazy.
Let's let's talk a little football. We're on in Houston,
Texans have a new OC tell me what you know
about Nick Kaylee. What are they getting the kame?
Speaker 9 (13:31):
I like Nick kelly Man obviously, you know he was
with Sean McVay for a little bit and the Patriots,
and but love his look. The culture that that Sean,
you know, teaches guys is fantastic. And you know there's
a difference in guy who just comes in and cult
plays and somebody who's gonna help develop and he's gonna
(13:55):
help develop that offensive line, tight ends, uh, the quarterback
to quarterbacks rape. You always need development as a quarterback.
So I do I like, I think I'll do a
great job.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Yeah, I got to rossback in Houston with you, j
thank you for coming on with us.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
And yeah, just on that in the OC search.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Just if you have any insight as far as you
know Nick Cassario as the general manager here in Houston.
The relationship with Tamiko Ryans not necessarily whose call was.
Speaker 7 (14:20):
Niko is a stud?
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Yeah, that dude just stud.
Speaker 7 (14:23):
That dude is a stud.
Speaker 9 (14:25):
Yes, I know I knew him as a player and again,
cultures everything, and I think a guy like that too,
I think they'll always kind of be in the in
the because of him. You'll like a Sean mcvatt, you'll
always or Kyle Shannon always be in the conversation for
as a contender.
Speaker 8 (14:46):
It's it's interesting the offensive line, I mean it was
it was a problem. Yeah, I don't know how you
fix it. I mean, Laramie Tunzel's not getting any younger,
Jack Mason all that. But when you saw the Texans
this year, was that the glaring weakness and protecting Stroud
and giving him time.
Speaker 9 (14:59):
I thought out of it. I was kind of looking
at I was kind of confused. I'm like, man, why
is this why are they struggling so much?
Speaker 7 (15:05):
There?
Speaker 9 (15:05):
I was because I thought Slowak was good also, and
just you know, it's interesting also about this league works
because slow probably could have gotten the head coaching job
last year if you wanted to and said now I
need to learn a little bit more, which I really
liked about it.
Speaker 7 (15:16):
And then it just goes to show you how fast
things can change.
Speaker 8 (15:19):
Yeah, it's it's it's that's I always say, like, when
you're the hot thing, go jump because you know.
Speaker 9 (15:24):
Yeah, But at the same time, if you don't think
you're ready, it's like it's a slippery slop.
Speaker 7 (15:29):
I'm not ready.
Speaker 9 (15:30):
I'm gonna crap out here in four years and never
gonna get another shot. I think most guys have confidence, like, hey,
I'm not ready, but I'm gonna be here for another
couple of years where I can learn nothing. You're gonna
get fired the next year. Yeah, But that's the NFL, man,
It's you know, it's it's the only And I think
that's why people of us have so much, so many
close relationships in the NFL, because there's no other job.
(15:50):
Like if some accountant screws up your taxes, the whole
worlds not talking about and sit fun on radio the
next day and Fox that weekend, and you know they're
not on your kids.
Speaker 8 (16:01):
Hey man, your dad screwed up these tacks.
Speaker 9 (16:02):
He's like, you know, you know, if you screwed setting
up at a restaurant, it's not out there constantly.
Speaker 8 (16:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (16:07):
So I think it makes people in the league a
lot closer.
Speaker 8 (16:09):
What where would you rank Stroud in terms of quarterbacks?
I mean he was he was top of the world
last year and this year. I don't want to say
he regressed because it was still a really good year,
but like, where would you put him if you're ranking quarterbacks?
Still top put us.
Speaker 9 (16:21):
Yeah, put him in somebody that startup a franchise around absolutely, Ok.
Speaker 8 (16:24):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's it's just it's it's tough to
be super critical of him and say sophomore slump because
his numbers were still very good, but they had all
all those issues. When you look around the ANFC South where,
I mean, do you still think it's Texans moving forward?
Speaker 10 (16:38):
Me?
Speaker 8 (16:38):
Jaguars, We're gonna see what they're gonna do. Titans, I mean,
maybe a quarterback real bad. We'll see what they do
with the top pick. But what do you make of Texas?
Speaker 9 (16:46):
You gotta knock them off? Yeah right, but you know
there's gonna be you know changes. Look, I can't say
because I don't know who the Titan quarterback's gonna be.
Yeah right, I think Liam Khan will do a great job.
I got to know Liam really well because he lived
with McVeigh.
Speaker 8 (16:59):
Yeah, so.
Speaker 7 (17:01):
Sean and I spent a lot of time together.
Speaker 9 (17:02):
Sewan was really one of the first guys in the
league I helped with mental health when I really started
opening up about stuff, and then he needed and didn't
realize he knewed that because Sean like the worst thing
that ever happened in Sean's life is that he didn't
win the Super Bowl in his second year ever as
the youngest head coach in the history.
Speaker 7 (17:21):
Of the NFL.
Speaker 9 (17:21):
And then and his parents look like the freaking people
you see in pictures and target and the picture frames.
Speaker 7 (17:27):
Like he he don't get drama.
Speaker 9 (17:28):
So we had to work through a lot and and
it's made him a much much better coach. So like
Liam lived with him, I got to meet, like really
know him.
Speaker 7 (17:37):
I think Liam's gonna I think Liam does a really
good job.
Speaker 8 (17:40):
The you mentioned mental health. That's one of the big
things that you've been focused on and part of the
reasons why you're here. Let's let us know because it's
funny when were kids growing up, like you would joke, Oh,
he's got ADHD. He can't sit still, he can't pay
attention and all this. Now we're way more sensitive to
it and now talk a little bit about it.
Speaker 7 (17:58):
I'm forties, okay, I'm fifty five.
Speaker 9 (18:01):
I got diagnosed in nineteen eighty nine, so there was no, oh,
this guy he has IDOHD, Like no one understood. I
got taken to Princeton University to get tested and I
used to have to go tell my teachers, Hey, I
got to step out and take a pill, or hey
I need so I go and tell talk to teams
now a lot about this, about what depression feels like,
(18:22):
what anxiety feels like, what ADHD feels like. In ADHD,
I tell these guys, it's like you feel like you're
drawing them. And the only way for me to get
a breath of fresh air is disrupt the class or
to you know, speak out, or to not pay attention,
like draw a game on my pad, or just walk
out the class.
Speaker 7 (18:40):
And like you think, I want to get trouble every
week in my life. Hell no, but I didn't have
the capability not to.
Speaker 9 (18:46):
And I tell these coaches now, I said, these players
like they told me I how to learning, just say disability.
Growing up, I didn't have a learning disability. I just
didn't learn the way you guys taught, right me. I've coached,
you know, tons of guys in mixed martial arts. I
got to teach different I got to coach differently. You
have a general consensus, but I've got to make sure
that you know, I connect with everybody there, and growing
up that wasn't the thing. So with all my mental
(19:07):
health struggles. I've tried a million pharmaceuticals, and at least
for the depression and anxiety, none of them work, so
I've had to.
Speaker 7 (19:16):
Find other skills.
Speaker 9 (19:17):
But for the ADHD, you know, I could put in
stimulants early, and when you have depression, they'll stimulants. It
does not work well with you and a guy like
me too. It brought out a lot of bad stuff.
And because I'm able to talk about it now, though
I have more options than I ever would have had.
So Kelbury got brought to me and they're like, it's
(19:38):
non stimulant, non stimulant, like you.
Speaker 7 (19:39):
Could take it to night.
Speaker 9 (19:40):
I'm like, I could take it at night and it doesn't.
I call it the Kilbury Comet. Calms you down at night.
It gets the roommates in my head to stop, a
million of them to stop talking and all that stuff,
and I'm able to focus and look look on Fox.
I don't use telepromport. So when you got ADHD, and
you know, before I had Kelbury, there's a lot of things.
Your your brain works too fast and you're just like
(20:02):
moving it. Now I am able to focus so much better.
But also, like I love talking about it's like, yeah,
I'm able to be of service and give it work
to people so we don't feel screwed up. And you know,
I try to figure out too where my ADHD and
my depression of anxiety became my superpower and where I
could weaponize them. So if I weaponize them through my advantage,
(20:23):
I'm not ashamed anymore.
Speaker 7 (20:24):
And that's why I'm really trying to get people to understand.
Speaker 8 (20:26):
To him, well, it's very cool. He is a Jay Glazer.
One more for you, real quick. Just give me a
quick thought. Super Bowl, how we I mean the two
best teams? I mean yeah, couldn't ask for anything better.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Man.
Speaker 7 (20:34):
I know Patrick mahomes done, but I don't know what
he can't do, so until he starts me. Otherwise, man,
I can't go against them.
Speaker 8 (20:39):
Jay, thanks so much for the time. I really appreciate all.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Right, good stuff there with Jay Glazer out at Radio Row,
Chris Gordy out there, and Ross Virial back here in Houston.
We're gonna take a quick break here be back with him.
We got Chris at Thompson coming up later. We got
some other good interviews, so it's a split site Matt
Thomas Show with Ross without man Thomas he is out.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
And you have Chris Gordy in New Orleans.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Here on a half Radio row half home studio in Houston,
while not home studio in studio in Houston. Edition of
The Matt Thomas Show with Ross Matt Thomas is out
Chris Gordy in New Orleans. Now, Matt was insistent that
you speak in your uh New Orleans vernacular and accent
the entire time you were on today.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Gordy.
Speaker 8 (22:25):
Yeah, I don't really have an accent, so I don't
know what I mean. I could. I can make one up,
I can it.
Speaker 4 (22:31):
I don't know. He always talks about it.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
He talks about like legendarily, when was the super Bowl
there last time when you guys were there.
Speaker 8 (22:37):
It was a decade ago.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
Yeah, it was a decade ago at that time.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Do you know have any idea if a big time
like if a band is coming, if is a brass
band coming through the convention Center again.
Speaker 8 (22:49):
But if there is, we will absolutely take a break
and just that on that show.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Here here's uh Connor's trying to help you along.
Speaker 8 (22:58):
Yeah. Well, some guys last night that they have like
the media party, the welcome party, and you know, the
word baby is thrown around a lot. Yeah, man, it's like,
hey baby, how y'all doing? No?
Speaker 4 (23:10):
I love New Orleans. My god, the New Orleans accent
is amazing.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
Like, even when I'm losing my acid blackjacket, Caesar's in
New Orleans.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
As long as the dealer has a New Orleans accent,
I'm having a good time. I don't know what it
is about it.
Speaker 8 (23:23):
By the way, it is their pretty big names here.
We just had uh so, Jaylen Miller walked by. Who's
you know? Alabama quarterback expected to be probably a first
round picking this year's draft. Jaden Daniels right behind him,
Jon Daniels. Yeah, former l s U Heisman Trophy winner
and led the Washington Commanders to what was it the
(23:43):
NFC championship game. Yeah, that's correct, So he is here.
Malik Neighbors, another legendary LSU wide.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
Resus my guy, All.
Speaker 8 (23:52):
Yeah, I think that's the key. You're in New Orleans.
So it's a lot of it's a lot of.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Is Matt Mock there?
Speaker 8 (23:58):
I've not seen him yet? Have you seen.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
JaMarcus Russell's JaMarcus Russell available?
Speaker 8 (24:03):
I did see uh. Vitz Wilfork was here earlier. Really
he looked unhappy. He'd looked like he did not want
to be here. So I did not. I was I
was gonna go try to grab him, but I'm like,
he looks angry.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
Let me guess he's pimping barbecue rubs.
Speaker 8 (24:17):
I'm sure if I had to bet, if I had
to bet some some kind of barbecue or something.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
Okay, So I kind of missed it.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Was Jay Glazer was there to talk about just mental
health in general or was there a certain website or
a product he was talking about.
Speaker 8 (24:31):
Yeah, he talked about the Quelbury I think is k
q u q e l b A b r e E.
Speaker 7 (24:41):
I know.
Speaker 8 (24:41):
It's kind of interesting though, because we all we all
have kind of have like a friend growing up and
you're like, oh he's got hd ADHD you can't sit still.
And now we're a little bit more sensitive to it.
So it's cool here Jay talk about that.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
Yeah, and the and the mental health stuff in general.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
But okay, So, so the biggest name you've seen so
far is who.
Speaker 8 (25:01):
I mean, Jane Daniels is pretty big right now.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
I would say the names that you listen, it's gotta
be ham.
Speaker 8 (25:07):
Yeah, I mean they The problem is ross. I'm right
in front of the Mike Golic. Okay, go Joe and
Golic and then right next to him is Yahoo and
Yahoo has had multiple guys come through. But you know,
it's like when you players, you don't recognize them by face,
you know, because they're wearing helmets. So you're like, I
don't know who that is. I know that's an NFL player,
(25:29):
I don't know who that is.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Yeah, maybe you should ask the guys to all wear
jerseys or just that, you know, just a bigger like
a name tag something. Yeah, that'd be good. You're navigating
the waters out there.
Speaker 8 (25:40):
Everybody has a credential, but the name is printed so tiny.
It's like, okay, just put the last name huge so
you can tell who it is.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
Yeah, you don't want to get binoculars out or anything. That
might be kind of rude, that might look a little weird.
Speaker 8 (25:53):
We are kind of open the next couple hours. Is
there anything you want?
Speaker 5 (25:55):
Ross?
Speaker 8 (25:56):
Is there anything I can bring as.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Far as a guest? Yeah, Kate Upton? Is she available? Okay,
let's see Dan Marino.
Speaker 8 (26:11):
I've heard he's gonna be here. I have not seen him.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Is JJ Watt? There is there anybody with a Houston
tie down there?
Speaker 8 (26:18):
Well?
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Vince Wilford, but he oh yeah, Vince will for he looked,
he said, he looked angry. You didn't want to approach him.
What do you think he was upset? You think he
hadn't you know, he hadn't need.
Speaker 5 (26:27):
An He's a kicker.
Speaker 8 (26:29):
It was a kicker. I would have I would have made.
Speaker 4 (26:30):
You don't need kickers.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
Although I think Matt was requesting Morton Anderson to recreate
the Morton Anderson Bobby Abert magic that they had ten
years ago on on Radio Row.
Speaker 8 (26:39):
We should have dug that up and played that as
a tribute that that that still is one of the
greatest moments in Radio Row history on seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
I didn't I don't even remember that. I think I
was off that day or something like that.
Speaker 8 (26:50):
It was Bobby aber was scheduled, and I think Morton
Anderson was supposed to be after him, but he got
there early. Yeah, so they just put him on with him,
and then they just told old stories of Bobby doing interview,
sitting button naked on the a on a metal bench
in the locker room, letting his junk hang out, and
then they started making fun of Matt's socks, and then
it was just a ripping on Matt Thomas for ten minutes.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
Yeah, that sounds great. Actually, that does sound spectacular. Maybe
we try to dig that up and find it from
the archives and replay that one, cause that sounds like
a lot of fun, you know, because Matt always tries
to make fun of these Radio Row interviews, but I
like having them. I thought Jay Glazer was great.
Speaker 8 (27:27):
Yeah. Well that's the thing of us, of me being
here and you being there, so we can be more selective,
like sometimes you have to be dude some of the
crap we've gotten offered and not read some of it
the other day.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Okay, those guys are people too.
Speaker 8 (27:39):
And I'm I'm I'm slowly getting into the area where
I'm not gonna be nice about it anymore. I'm just
gonna go no, thank you.
Speaker 7 (27:45):
Hmm.
Speaker 8 (27:46):
Yeah, you'd try to be nice to go. Oh, we'll
see what we can do.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
But you're a Marden Radio Row vet. Now at this point,
I have another question. We used to always see the
same like five PR guys down there every year. Is
it's still the same PR people. You recognize a lot
of him from years past exactly. Yep, that's good. You
can build a relationship with him. There's a squirrely guy
with the floppy hair. Is he there still too?
Speaker 8 (28:10):
I think so? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (28:11):
Oh wow, good for him. I guess I'm glad they're
they're staying uh, they're staying employed down there in New
Orleans at Radio Row, getting their free trip to the
super Bowl every single year.
Speaker 8 (28:22):
It's crazy. I mean, you got like the sets with
the big setups. I'm looking at so we have iHeart
has a huge setup with Fox Sports Radio. But when
I went over there, they acted like they didn't know me.
But they've got they've got a huge setup. Pro Football
Talk with Fourio fan Duel has a massive setup. Serious
XM Yahoo. I mean, it's it's all around the room here.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
So are you getting hooked up with?
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Greg Twoey is the producer for the Colin Cowherd Show.
If folks don't know, and he's a good friend of
the show. Trying to get some you should wing some
guests off a hymn.
Speaker 8 (28:53):
I don't know if they're here because oh really I
heard was he was in studio on Monday? Remember when
he got sick?
Speaker 4 (28:59):
Not really, Oh he threw up or something. I heard
he threw.
Speaker 8 (29:02):
Off the show the middle of the show.
Speaker 5 (29:04):
He left.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
Wow, he's hungover or what.
Speaker 11 (29:08):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (29:08):
Probably, but they're not here. It was they were in
La So I don't know. Very strange.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
That is very strange. Okay, well we're gonna take another
break here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross, without
Matt Thomas, with Chris Cordy.
Speaker 8 (29:20):
Uh, we don't.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
We don't have a guest for a little bit. Correct.
Speaker 8 (29:23):
Yeah, we can get into it. We can get into
some some nitty gritty astros conversation. Yes, action to Dana
Brown yesterday.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
Brag Man update. We can do those. We got the
Rockets losing last night.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
We have Nick Kayley as the OC of your Houston Texans.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
And also Gordy.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
I want to like a special Super Bowl radio row themed.
Ain't nobody got time for that? Slash shut your bum
ass up coming up at eleven thirty.
Speaker 8 (29:48):
Okay, I like it.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
Yeah, come up with something and all of you can
can can join in on that at eleven thirty. You
can get in now too if you want to talk
to Sports seven one three two one two five seven
ninety the phone number seven one three two one two
five seven ninety.
Speaker 12 (30:03):
Matt Ross return return on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show with Ross ross Vere.
We are with you here Chris Gordy in New Orleans, baby.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
With media row.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
So we have Jay Glazer saying he's not going to
pick against Pat Mahomes. Are you know, just chatting around
with folks about the game match, Gordian, Then do you
have an opinion as well?
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Okay, it sounds like Chris Gordy is meeting with somebody. Okay,
who's he trying to talk?
Speaker 8 (30:48):
I was meeting here, Heyts with his legendary agent, is
sharing a table with us, and I'm just telling him
what a great guy is. Okay, dude, come jimp on
five minutes, five minutes, okay, Okay, he's got eleven o'clock.
So we'll get Stu Gotts on with us.
Speaker 4 (31:08):
Oh you could have got five minutes. They brushed you off, Houston. Yeah,
the folks you're listening, you're listening live to a brush off.
Speaker 8 (31:16):
Yeah. I want to I want to tell him about
Remember for years, Ross, we used to get tweets at
seven ninety on Twitter and they'd be like, tell Stu
Gotts to shut up and all this. It was the
Miami station, Yes, so like it was just funny. People
would always confuse us. They'd be like, the Dolphins need
to sign this guy and all that, and I was like, who, what,
(31:37):
why is Matt talking about the Dolphins? And then you realize, Oh,
they're tweeting at the Miami station.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
So oh well, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
I was just reading we have a well, okay, it's
a very minor Rockets trade has been made, according to
Sham Sharania, but we got the Boston Celtics are trading
at Jaden Springer and their twenty thirty second round pick
to the Houston Both teams are also exchanging heavily protected
second rounders. I'm gonna be honest, I gotta look up
(32:07):
Chayden Springer's stats. I don't think he's been playing much
for the Boston Celtics, and no he is not. He's
averaging one point seven points per game in twenty six games.
No starts.
Speaker 8 (32:20):
That's so what what's the motivation behind this tie?
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Is that some sort of accumulation of picks or some
kind of I don't know if it's like getting on
a I don't know if it's salary cap implications or
something like that. I'm gonna guess it's something that related.
Unless Jaden Springer has been lying in wait to dominate
for the Houston Rockets.
Speaker 8 (32:42):
Well, I can tell you this. As a college player,
he was very good played at Tennessee SEC.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Guy, first round pick in twenty twenty one, twenty eighth overall.
Speaker 7 (32:52):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
He's played ninety three games in four years in the NBA.
He's started four games in four years in the NBA,
averaging two point seven points three point percentage of two fifty.
Speaker 8 (33:03):
Yeah, I just I remember him in college. He was
a good score. I mean, he had a ton of
twenty point games. But yeah, hasn't really translated much to
the NBA. Like you said, three spent three years of Philly,
two years in Boston. But Celtics trading James Prayer and
a twenty thirty second round pick to the Rockets. What
(33:23):
do you think the Rockets are giving up?
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Probably second round picks. It says both teams aren't exchanging
heavily protected second rounders. So yeah, this has got to
be some kind of workaround for the CBA or the
luxury tax or something.
Speaker 8 (33:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
I don't think there's much else going on in this
and maybe I mean.
Speaker 8 (33:42):
Like they're gonna you stash him in Rio grand, right,
you're not gonna put him again.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
It depends on what kind of contract he's on, if
you can even send him down there.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (33:56):
That's interesting. And he was He's only spent the last
two years in Boston. It's not like he was there.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
With Yeah, that's right, he was right.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
He was a phill Sorry, drafted by Philadelphia and then
with Boston the last couple of years hasn't really provided
much of anything.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
Okay, I think we can close the book on that.
What were you talking about before, Gordon?
Speaker 8 (34:16):
Yeah, what's the trade deadline?
Speaker 4 (34:19):
February sixth tomorrow. I don't know the exact time.
Speaker 8 (34:22):
It's like afternoon, yeah, more afternoon. So do the Rockets
need to make a big move?
Speaker 4 (34:30):
I would say big move. No, I'm still not panic.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
There was somebody asking me if this is like the
Rockets regressing to the mean. I don't think so. I
I so, first of all, they've been competitive in these games.
Should have beat the Brooklyn Nets very well, could have
beat the Knicks on the road without. I mean, if
it depends on if you want to call Jabarisimith Junior
a starter at the very least, if not three starters,
three rotational players, and missing Fred van Vliet is huge.
(34:52):
He gets them into offensive sets. He's a calming force
in those clutch time situations. So not having him for
a couple of games over this stretch, not having Shingoon
for three games and then it kind of took them
a whole half to get warmed up. You're in the
middle of a game of a stretch of fourteen games
out of eighteen on the road, with a not a
(35:13):
lot of days off in between. I do expect the
Rockets maybe to lose another one or two before they
hit the All Star break. There's five games left, because
it's just been it's the you know, we talk about
the dog days of summer in the NBA, I mean
in the Major League Baseball.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
It's like that in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
It's the dog days of winter, right before that All
Star break where they pack in as many games as
they possibly can so they can get them that week
plus off. I'm not super worried about the Rockets. I
would say still don't rock the boat, stay the course,
no big major moves necessary, although some people are backing
off of that after this stretch of four straight losses.
Speaker 8 (35:52):
Yeah, well, it's I don't know. Man, these next two games,
you gotta go to Minnesota, you gotta go to Dallas.
We'll get to see Anthony Davis, by the way as
a new Dallas Maverick on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
But it feels like, is he gonna be active? He's
got the abdomen issue.
Speaker 8 (36:08):
I saw that. Isn't that funny? He's hurt, play shocking,
he's his whole career and gets in this massive trade
and then suddenly it's like, oh, he's.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Hurt, Yeah, he's hurt. Well, I saw it is Luka
doncic I guess. I wonder. I wonder if the the Mavericks.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
It's interesting in these types of situations where you kind
of need if you get in a run. And I'm
not saying Luka Donchets is, but it seems to me
that the MAVs were very They.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
Hit their limit with with Luka Danchets.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
That's the only reason you trade a twenty five year
old who's a dynamic score and one of the great
playmakers in the league and in the history of the league.
He's already seventh in triple doubles all time, all time.
So for them to do that, I wonder if that
kind of is going to awaken in Luka Doncic what
he needed. It's like sometimes to grow up, you gotta have,
(36:57):
you gotta have kind of some adversity. You gotta have
things now go your way, and that wakes you up.
And it never maybe would have happened with the MAVs.
And now he's just gonna unleash the beast with the
Lakers for like the next ten plus years.
Speaker 8 (37:09):
Yeah, I still I kick it over that trade. That's
absolutely atrocious.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
Yeah, not in not talking to any other organization is stupid.
Speaker 8 (37:19):
That's insane. Like anybody knows you. Okay, you want to
trade a generational talent, that's one thing, but open up
the market, start up, start a war. He's available, what
you got, you don't just go While we came in
agreement with the Lakers and other execs coming up, we
didn't know he was available. We have been giving up
a king's ransom.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
Rudy Gobert got four first round picks. Rudy gobertet in
four first round picks. Luka Doncics gets you one, and
Anthony Davis.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
That's nuts, insane, absolutely insane that they've done that. And
then now there's.
Speaker 8 (37:59):
Many the by the way, So they're in Minnesota Thursday.
Minnesota does play back to back. They'll play the Bulls
tonight and then they'll play the Rockets. Smart that's good.
Rockets kinda find a way to win that one.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
Man, Yeah, I would hope.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
So some people were calling it a must win game
last night against the Brooklyn Nets, and well they didn't win.
Season goes on for the Rockets and they're still in
a three spot. But you've got the Denver Nuggets coming
on strong. I just want top four, but really like
two or three. So if you do win your first
playoff series, you can avoid the thunder at all costs.
Speaker 8 (38:36):
Well, they were in such a good run, right, I mean,
you were holding on that two spot. You're like, all right,
this is and you knew they weren't going to catch
the thunder, but you were like, all right, they aren't
going to be in the two seed. This is legit.
And then suddenly you stut to get their four four
straight losses and now suddenly this thing is waning.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
Yeah, you've had a man with the calf issue, You've
had Fred Vanvleie with his issues, You've had I think
it was a calf as for albrynching Goon as well.
I think these guys are just getting tired and road weary.
It's that time of year. You're fifty games into the
year now, so I mean it's it's a grueling stretch.
Let's get to the All Star break, baby.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Let's try to win like three or four of these
last five games and get to the All Star Break.
Speaker 8 (39:16):
Yep. Yeah, and Matt will be what They're traveling to
Minnesota today.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yes, he will be in Minnesota, and he'll be back
with us tomorrow here on a Sports Talk seven ninety
All right, our number one is in the books. We've

from New Orleans.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
I heard we're gonna have another guest coming up here.
Shortly correct.
Speaker 8 (40:11):
I don't think this segment, Probably next segment. I think
Stu Gotts is gonna jump on with us. He he
was going to, but he has to jump on a
on another interview.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
Sir, all right, so you're gonna get Stu Gotts. You
know his real name? I'm looking it up right now.
It's Jonathan Bryan Wiener or Winer ever never no idea?
Speaker 8 (40:29):
What is It's like, uh Mick Lovin, Like, no idea
what his real name is?
Speaker 4 (40:32):
Yeah? What does Stu Gotts even mean?
Speaker 8 (40:36):
It was something from the day Lebottard Show back in
the day.
Speaker 5 (40:38):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Okay, So we're all the big stars here on the show.
We'll get Steve Gotts coming up here in a minute.
Speaker 8 (40:45):
Who's bigger than him?
Speaker 2 (40:46):
I mean, nobody, nobody get to get the president on himself.
It's not gonna be as big as Stu Gotts coming
up later here from Radio Arrows.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
Go ahead, just.
Speaker 8 (40:56):
Saw walk by. If you want me to grab him,
the beer man. Uh, former Saints returnman Michael Lewis, if
you want who you remember? Michael Lewis, the return man
for the Saints.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
Isn't that the guy that wrote isn't that the guy
that wrote Moneyball?
Speaker 8 (41:10):
Different? Michael Lewis? Okay, Now this guy was He was
a Beard delivery man and like walked on with the
Saints and became their Like I think he made Wow,
but the Pro Bowl or something one.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
He's like the he's like the Vince Papali of the Saints.
Speaker 8 (41:25):
Bally is and he's worked in their front office I
think for years now. It's like, uh, you know, community
relations type guy. But anyway, he just walked by.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Okay, all right, Well all the stars around in New
Orleans right now with Chris Gordy. That's great, all right, Gordy, Well,
we were gonna you mentioned Dana Brown speaking, so we
were going to get to some of that.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
Are there a lot of interesting things?
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Now this was at you Were you at this media
availability eating all the food?
Speaker 8 (41:53):
No? I well I would have been, but I was
driving to New Orleans. But yeah, Dan was there. Adam Wesler,
Adam Clinton. I think we were well represented.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
By the way.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
Did you make it in a tight five hours? How
was it the traffic on iten driving out to New Orleans?
Speaker 8 (42:06):
You did? It wasn't bad?
Speaker 4 (42:07):
Oh wow.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
Usually there's like seven recks on the way in or
the way back.
Speaker 8 (42:12):
Well, there was one in Baytown trying to get.
Speaker 4 (42:13):
Oh, of course.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
But it's either Baytown or Beaumont or somewhere like vider Sulfur.
There's always going to be a rex somewhere on the
way out to New Orleans. It feels like but anyways,
but but.
Speaker 8 (42:26):
No, it's it's always a fun event because it marks
kind of like the unofficial start of the season for
the Astros when they have their big luncheon to announce
here's our marketing campaign, here's all our promotional giveaways. We're
going to half of the year. And then you know
GM and manager speak, you know, all right, we are underway.
Speaker 5 (42:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
A couple interesting things from Dana Brown. Let's go ahead
and start with him now. If he starts off talking
about how the door isn't closed with Alex Bregman, but
then he continues to say Gordy, and he said this
over and over, so I think we all need to
move on.
Speaker 4 (42:57):
With our lives.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
No new dialogue between Boris and Brown.
Speaker 13 (43:03):
No, I have not talked to Boris recently, but we
are still having conversations internally.
Speaker 7 (43:10):
And then I'll leave it at down.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
So basically he's just like, look internally means he's talking
to Jim Crane.
Speaker 4 (43:18):
Jim Crane, do you want to up the offer? No? Okay,
well we're not gonna up the offer and they're not
gonna accept that offer. So let's move on with our lives.
Speaker 8 (43:27):
Yeah, I just I don't know, man. I thought the
writing was on the wall when they when they traded
Kyle Tucker and they got back east Ock Paratus, who
we know is an infielder, and then they signed Christian
Walker as in everyday first basement. I was like, that's it,
Like this whole thing of Altuve move into the outfit.
They'll they'll, they'll play him someone else in left field,
but I think he's still gonna primarily be the second basement.
(43:48):
Like so this whole thing of oh, the door is
still open. The door's only opened because he hasn't signed
anywhere yet. But from all the comments Dana Brown has made,
if not felt like they have any interest. I think
the only way the astros would say we have interest
is if they called and said, hey, Alex didn't have
any takers, so he'll just he'll resign for one year.
(44:09):
Like I think that's a situation where they go, oh yeah, sure.
But barring Jim Crane waking up one day and going hell, yeah,
let's go get Bregman, whatever it takes, they're not listen
to Data's quotes. They're not interested.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
It doesn't seem like they are, or it seems like
maybe it's Dana Brown that is not interested. And when
he says internal conversations, maybe that he is trying to
signal to us without saying And then Jim Crane's kind
of interested, but it's also going to take a lot
of money, so the interest level is low.
Speaker 8 (44:35):
I think that's him just saying that though, Like because
notice what he's saying. He's not saying that they have
interest elsewhere like in other words, he's he's not saying
that they've talked to the agent or talked to Bregman.
He keeps saying we're having internal conversations. All that means
is they're sitting around the offices going, hey, you see
Bregman's still out there. Yeah, I saw that. That's probably
(44:55):
the extent of the internal conversation.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
Yes, yeah, it just doesn't seem like there's much action there.
There have been a lot of people talking about the Cubs.
Speaker 4 (45:05):
Now.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
See, I'm trying to find it. This is a problem
into the state of today's Twitter. I saw it somewhere
and I'm trying to verify that the Cubs might be
interested on doing this like a short year deal with
a short term deal with opt outs for Alex Bregman,
which I don't think he wants.
Speaker 8 (45:21):
Yeah, it was nobody reputable yesterday reports. Okay, at least
what I could see it was it was like, you know,
a couple of bloggers, you know, people with like ten
thousand followers, Like, all right, maybe there's something there, but yeah,
that's it. It was put out there that the Cubs
are at least exploring the idea of, hey, bregmant, how
(45:41):
about a a multi year deal but with opt outs
where you can get it like here's one hundred million,
but you could opt out after a year or two
or whatever.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Yeah, just ridiculous with this. We're trying to find reliable
information on Twitter, don't even get me started. But anyways,
Dana Brown also went on to say that now we
had heard that they were in on Jorge Polanco and
they were maybe going to turn attention to Bregmant and
or others now, but Dana Brown not ruling out another move.
Speaker 4 (46:09):
Being made for the Houston Astros.
Speaker 13 (46:11):
Oh, we're trying to get a left hand bat for
the outfield. You know, all of the most of the
options to slim the nun. But we're still working, ouch
and grinding, you know, to get some left handed at
bats in our outfield.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
How does Jason Hayward feel saying here are the options
are are something to none. He's available, he's left handed,
he was here last year.
Speaker 8 (46:33):
I don't get why that hasn't been done already. Like
what what does it hurt? Because I know they they
they like Taylor Tremmell and they're gonna give him a chance.
But to me, you've got five million left under the
cap or you know, the luger a tacks like why
not just why not just call Hayward and say let's
get this done.
Speaker 2 (46:52):
Yeah, maybe he wants a little bit more than that,
but I don't know if he's gonna get it. This
late in the game, Alex Verdugo, another left handed outfielder
that a name has kind of been thrown out there,
so I don't know.
Speaker 8 (47:04):
Well, real quick, Ross, Let's get let's get somebody who
would know all about the Alex Pregman stuff. Let's get
an Alex Pregman update from our buddy Ari Alexander KPRC
channel too, He joins us. Now, all right, what's up, Hey,
what's going on? Chris?
Speaker 14 (47:16):
Yeah, there hasn't been much of updates within the past
few days. It feels like he's sort of in the
bunker trying to decide between what he has. But right now,
the way that I'm thinking about it, and just from
the people that I've talked to over the past couple
of weeks, is there are three sections of teams for
Alex Pregman. Of the five total teams that are in
on Alex Pregman, the first section are the teams that
are going to be giving him long term offers that
(47:36):
I think are gonna have to do a little extra
to get him. That's Toronto, that's Detroit. The second section
has just one team in it. That's the Astros and
whatever it is that's gonna happen with them, the six
to one to fifty six offer that I just do
not believe that he's going to take. If the Astros,
and it's sounding more and more unlikely, are going to
get Alex Pregman, they're gonna have to up their offer.
Doesn't feel like they want to and doesn't feel like
Alex wants to take the six one fifty six. The
(47:58):
third section of teams is the Cubs and the Red Sox,
two teams that it feels like they're going for a
shorter term, opt outs type of offers to Alex Bregman,
a little higher AAV and those are teams that I
don't think would have to do the extra the way
the Blue Jays and the way the Tigers might have
to do to get him. Those are teams that I
(48:19):
believe he would have liked to play for if the
money is right, if the situation is right. However, the
Red Sox create a problem because he's gonna have to
play second base, at least initially. Rafael Devers, from what
I've been told all off season, is not moving off
third base. So those are your three parts of where
Alex Bregman could go. But as of right now there's
no decision made. He has five potential places he could
(48:42):
still go. And I know everyone's upset how long this
has been dragging on, and I'm sure that he's not
loving how long he doesn't have a specific plan of
what he needs to do in spring training.
Speaker 8 (48:51):
But that's where we're at right now. How about that?
Ross and Impromptu are all drop in in the middle, in.
Speaker 2 (48:58):
The middle of us talking about Alex Bregman indipitous.
Speaker 8 (49:01):
He was just walking bys and you know who would
know the latest on this? Uh?
Speaker 1 (49:05):
Is?
Speaker 4 (49:05):
There is there any product you want to pimp now?
Ari any any sort of uh oh man, we q
robs or.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
Yeah, any kind of I don't know, a new kind
of sunscreen or some kind of website. Will never use
one eight hundred flowers or something.
Speaker 8 (49:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 14 (49:20):
But if anyone wants to send me like high Choose
to my house, you're welcome to.
Speaker 8 (49:24):
I love High Choose a candy Japanese candy.
Speaker 4 (49:29):
Underrated High Choose.
Speaker 8 (49:31):
I feel extremely underrated. I'd rather like Big Lead Chew
or something big Lead Chew.
Speaker 4 (49:36):
What are you six?
Speaker 8 (49:37):
That's a totally different classic candy.
Speaker 4 (49:40):
You're completely different.
Speaker 8 (49:42):
You're looking for something sweet I love that love. I
love Alridy just dropping in giving us stuff.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
All right, are you one more question then? What we
were also talking about other moves. If it feels like
the Astros are out on Bregman just from a week
and tell uh, do you think they'll be making a
move as far as an outfielder is what they've been
also been talking.
Speaker 4 (49:58):
About, I think have to.
Speaker 14 (50:00):
The problem is that just there there isn't much on
the market. And I've been sort of saying this for weeks,
and then Dana Brown kind of said the same thing
that I've been saying for a while, which is like, yeah,
we'd love to get a left handed outfielder, but who
who are you gonna get? Alex Ferdugo and David Peralta
are the two names that I can come up with
that are left on the market. How excited are you
about alex Erdugo or David Peralta, Like, realistically, you know
(50:21):
what I mean for Dugo's coming off a down year
in a stadium that he should be able to hit
bombs at. Paralta is aging was a solid player for
a long long time, and I just don't think that's
a guy that moves the meter. The other one that
has made sense to me all off season, and I've
been told there is just no connection there, at least
at the moment. Maybe they circle back eventually. Is Jason Hayward.
(50:42):
You brought him in last year, great clubhouse guy, veteran
left handed bat, can play adequate right field and left field,
which is what you need. And there just hasn't been
any conversation there. And one big right handed bat who
made plenty of sense for the Astros is off the
board now, Randall Gritchick, well Mark, consolidated high school guy,
was once drafted above Mike Trout one year, five million
(51:03):
dollar deal with the Diamondbacks that happened yesterday.
Speaker 8 (51:05):
He's a guy that I thought fit.
Speaker 14 (51:07):
But I believe that Dana Brown is heavily looking for
a left handed bat.
Speaker 8 (51:11):
And there just isn't anything out there. Yeah, that's it's
it's fascinating. I almost wonder if it's down to like,
you know, they're trying to get Hayward back, but they're like,
we'll give them two mill, and they're like, we want
four mill, and they're just waiting it out, like you know, like.
Speaker 14 (51:27):
There's just been no conversation with Hayward specifically, from what
I'm told, I've checked on like once a week. I'm like, Hey,
Jason Haywar, are they bringing him back? And Nope, nothing.
So he's a guy that again it makes sense, and
what you're postulating makes sense, and it just isn't happening.
And the only two guys I can think of that
makes sense right now, or if we're Dugo and Paralta,
Node's excited about them. They were in on Jerks and
(51:49):
Profar from what I'm told, But the Braves three year,
forty two million dollar deal got him. They would have
had to go above the tax for him, even after
clearing out whatever they cleared out of Ryan Presley's salary.
Speaker 8 (51:59):
They eight and a half million that they saved on
Ryan Presley. I don't believe that Jim Crane is going
to go into the tax for a Jerks and Profar.
He will for an Alex Bregman, but Jerks and PROFI
I don't think moves the meter to make this team
better enough for Jim Crane to say, you know what,
I'm gonna pay the thirty percent repeater tax instead of
the twenty percent tax like they paid last year for
Jerks and Profar and the Braves are are the ones
(52:20):
that have him anyway. Now, well, Ross, get ready for
plenty of Jake Myers fan clubs. Let's go, baby, He's
gonna play like every game.
Speaker 4 (52:28):
Well he did last year and that wasn't great by the.
Speaker 8 (52:31):
End of play every game last year.
Speaker 4 (52:32):
All right, Ari, thanks for the time.
Speaker 2 (52:33):
We're gonna let you lose. I gotta get to a
break here. I appreciate you, Thank you. There you go, Ari,
Alexander k p RC Local two here on Sports Talk
seven ninety with Chris Cordy out there.
Speaker 4 (52:43):
You never know what you're gonna get out on Radio Row.
We got a baseball guest as Ari was out there,
so we also are supposed to have Stucatt's coming up
in a few minutes, Christa Thompson, Jalen Ford as well.
Gordy's out at Radio Row.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
Ross here in Houston, and you were listening to the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 12 (53:01):
The Matt and Thomas Show with Ross continue so in
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (53:22):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (53:24):
To the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. I believe we
have Chris Gordy. Are you there, Gardy?
Speaker 8 (53:30):
Yeah? What's going on?
Speaker 4 (53:31):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (53:31):
Just making sure you're good over there. I know you're
schmoozing out there.
Speaker 8 (53:34):
Who was that that spot we just ran that iHeart spot?
Was that Greg Rosenthal who was like, I'm gonna be
at Radio Row all week. No, Greg, We've got We've
got you covered right here on the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
Yeah, yeah, all week here at the Matt Thomas Show
on all of our stations.
Speaker 4 (53:48):
Who'd you guys? I heard Bernie Cozar on the way in.
What else you guys got going on on the Sean
Salisbury Show.
Speaker 8 (53:54):
Well, we had Clay Matthews yesterday with Sean and then
Bernie Cozar today, So I think I think tomorrow we've
got Shawn's got EMMITTT Smith and former Cowboys great Darryl Johnston.
Speaker 2 (54:08):
Wow, Moose and Emmitt I think are back to back, right, Yeah,
shouldn't it be the other way around? Shouldn't Moose Johnson
be leading the way for emmittt?
Speaker 8 (54:17):
It's true, I didn't think of that. We should have
just done him together.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
Yeah, probably that's true. You probably could have got some
good stories, all right. So that's coming up. And then
later on today we have CHRISA. Thompson and Jalen Ford
and have we spotted stew Gotts.
Speaker 8 (54:30):
Not yet, We're routting him down.
Speaker 4 (54:33):
I mean, he's so busy. I mean, he's so busy.
It's fine.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
I mean he just probably flew in from the Grammys
and then he's you know, good goodness knows what else
he's been up to lately. Now in radio row, New Orleans,
where Chris Cordy.
Speaker 8 (54:44):
Is, Oh, let's see behind us right now, we've got
Malcolm Jenkins just walked by Philly and Saints great and
now Patrick Peterson another LSU legend, gues legend in.
Speaker 4 (54:55):
Yeah, I guess in New Orleans. It's probably a lot
of them live in the area. Although Patrick Peters is
not playing anymore.
Speaker 8 (55:02):
Right, I think he's retired, right.
Speaker 2 (55:05):
I think so too. I'm gonna say yes without even
really knowing for sure. I'm looking it up. Uh, Steelers
in twenty three and that was it. Yeah, so he
hadn't played in the couple. Eight time pro bowler. Patrick
Peterson stud absolute absolute stud and I believe a Thorpe
Ward winner.
Speaker 4 (55:22):
Correct, I'm looking it up. Yes, yes he did.
Speaker 8 (55:28):
And now Derek Stingley following in his footsteps with the
chance to you know, perhaps repeat that.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
Uh No, Stingley didn't win a Thorpe. What thorper ward
is for the is for college.
Speaker 8 (55:42):
No, I was I met time Pro bowler.
Speaker 2 (55:45):
Oh, eight time Pro Bowl. I'm sorry thought were talking
about the Thorpe. Yeah, yes, Derek Sidley first the first
team All Pro. That's a good start, all right. You
know what we were talking with Ari in the last
segment about the outfield stuff.
Speaker 4 (55:54):
That's kind of what I want to talk about.
Speaker 2 (55:57):
I mean, are they gonna do something or are they
just gonna, you know what, We're gonna hang tight. Maybe
Jacob Melton's gonna be ready, maybe a little bit of
Zach Dezenzo and left field as well, and then and
just go with the guys, en roll with the guys
they have, and stay under the tax.
Speaker 8 (56:12):
I don't know many. This feels like if you were
gonna bring in a Hayward or somebody like that. I mean,
what is it next Thursday pictures and Catchers report?
Speaker 4 (56:22):
So yeah, I think this is my guess.
Speaker 2 (56:25):
They're guessing that that they're either a bounce back a
year from Chas McCormick, b Jacob Melton is ready within
a month or two of the season and can can
prop perhaps produce or see Zach Dezenzo can get you something.
They're hoping one of those three workout, if not multiple.
What do you think about that?
Speaker 8 (56:44):
Yeah? I think I think they should they The problem
is again like if you if you haven't brought somebody
in yet, then I don't. I just to me, man,
it's it's they must really be high on Taylor Tromel
and something is they.
Speaker 5 (57:00):
I just.
Speaker 8 (57:02):
What happens if Meyers or McCormick gets hurt for any
stretch of time. I mean, then you're leaning on the
You're leaning on the young guys like Jacob Melton has
to come up and play like it's they put themselves
in a buy in here, like the fact that traded
to Kyle Tucker didn't have an obvious like pivot.
Speaker 4 (57:20):
I don't know, man, Yeah, yeah, it'll be interesting. Taylor
Trammel is twenty seven now, he's played one hundred and
twenty six career games.
Speaker 2 (57:31):
He's got a negative war like maybe they feel like
there's some lightning in that bottle. I don't know, but
that is interesting. And then another option at left field
could be Gordy our friend Josel Tove.
Speaker 13 (57:46):
I don't think it's that much of an extra wear
other than there's a longer run from the dugout. But
I mean I played outfield. It gets it gets boring
out there after you don't do much.
Speaker 8 (57:57):
I mean you're waiting.
Speaker 13 (57:58):
You may not get a fly ball for a long time.
So I don't see if it was Maybe if it
was center, there's a little bit more aware for center
field because you have to run to both sides, both
gaps or short stop.
Speaker 4 (58:12):
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (58:12):
He says, not as much extra wear and tear for
al Tuova if he's going to left field.
Speaker 4 (58:19):
I just dude, come on, it's gonna happen.
Speaker 8 (58:21):
Would would al two set the record for the smallest
player to ever play outfield?
Speaker 4 (58:26):
I don't think so. Probably. I don't know what position
did Hack Wilson play back in the day. I don't know.
Speaker 8 (58:35):
Okay, in the modern era, who's the shortest?
Speaker 4 (58:38):
Oh, here we go, pulling it up. Hack Wilson play
the outfield?
Speaker 8 (58:43):
Baby?
Speaker 2 (58:45):
Five five foot six. I know who he is. You
know you've heard the name.
Speaker 8 (58:51):
How about Jorge Barosa of the Diamondbacks five foot five?
Speaker 4 (58:55):
Okay, you're pulling up googles.
Speaker 8 (58:58):
Yeah, I'm just trying to see them, like, yeah, who
has been the shortest.
Speaker 4 (59:01):
Time I'm trying to see where.
Speaker 2 (59:02):
Yeah, look, Hack Wilson used to play center field and
right and left back in the day in what year
nineteen twenty seven?
Speaker 8 (59:10):
Yeah, come on, look.
Speaker 4 (59:11):
At the minute of Hack Wilson out there and left
field for the Chicago Cubs.
Speaker 8 (59:16):
Hall of Fame coming up on one hundred year anniversary
of Wilson playing. Jorge Barosa is a Venezuelan outfielder for
the Arizona Diamondbacks. And he's listed as five foot nine,
so he's probably more five foot eight. But that's like,
(59:38):
isn't your stereotypical outfielder, Like, oh, he's six one six
' three five tool player.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
Oh, Jose's not going to have all the tools. We
don't know about his throwing arm either.
Speaker 8 (59:53):
Well, you just use the the I mean the wall helps, right,
I mean it's all about playing the playing the ball.
Speaker 4 (59:59):
Yeah, you're right. He should push off the wall when
he throws. That's give him a little bit extra umph.
Speaker 8 (01:00:06):
But at least doing that, he just says, he get
the ball back in range at the second basement. How
many errorsts did he have last year?
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
He actually had a really high fielding percentage. But you're
gonna have a high percentage when you're not tracking down
a whole bunch of balls because you just don't have
the range you used to. Yeah, here's what, here's actually
we do have. Dana Brown, he's not worried about jose
Al two vas throwing arm.
Speaker 13 (01:00:27):
It's easier to throw from the outfield because you get
the crow hop in the momentum, where a lot of
times on the infield it's like you throw flat footed.
Speaker 7 (01:00:34):
And so I think his arm.
Speaker 13 (01:00:36):
Will play a little bit better in the outfield because
when you get your crow hop and you get your
weight behind you, the ball usually comes out a lot better.
Speaker 7 (01:00:44):
And so I don't think he'd have problems throwing.
Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
This is happening. This is so happening.
Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
Dana Brown is talking about crow hopping and arms, and
he's jogging out the left and he's gonna be boring
though he's gonna be bored out there. A lot of
how two vane that field is absolutely happening this year.
Speaker 8 (01:01:03):
God, it just that seems so ridiculous. I mean, I
guess if but like, okay, what's the backup plan? Or
like if he's doing that, then who's second?
Speaker 4 (01:01:13):
Who's a second Dubon?
Speaker 8 (01:01:17):
Come on?
Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
Somebody that they signed, maybe Bryce Matthews eventually.
Speaker 4 (01:01:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (01:01:24):
I'd rather put yrd On in left.
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Then I'm with you, I put you bon in second.
I mean, I'm putting can yord On play second?
Speaker 4 (01:01:34):
What's it? I'm just kidding.
Speaker 8 (01:01:35):
By the way, did you hear that call earlier, the
guy who asked Sean and the Lima about you know,
why kn't ord On play first? It is a very
simple answer. He doesn't want to.
Speaker 4 (01:01:50):
Very clearly. It hasn't happened over the years, and they
talked about working him out there for years and years
and years, as never happens.
Speaker 8 (01:01:56):
It's just always funny when fans are like, what what
I'll put this guy at first because he doesn't want to.
Players get to say it where they play. This isn't
This isn't high school where you go you know, Villarel
get it first? As I said, so like they have
us say and what they what position they play?
Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
Yeah, it's just it's it's interesting. It'll be very very
interesting to see how this plays out. I wonder how
many games al twov is actually gonna be out there
and left I.
Speaker 8 (01:02:26):
Hope not many.
Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
I'm thinking forty fifty is just off the top of
my head. But not having you know, any idea, And
like you said, we we always kind of construct our
roster in our mind and the way things are gonna
play out with one hundred percent health, and it's not
gonna be that way.
Speaker 8 (01:02:41):
How many balls hit on a rope? Do you think
he's gonna run down?
Speaker 4 (01:02:47):
He's gonna work on it, Easyna be fine.
Speaker 8 (01:02:49):
I don't think he's gonna make.
Speaker 4 (01:02:50):
Any He's he's gonna run down some.
Speaker 5 (01:02:54):
He's not gonna be top.
Speaker 4 (01:02:55):
He's not gonna be a little leaguer out there.
Speaker 8 (01:02:58):
That's what I'm envisioning.
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
Oh my god, that's you're your nuts. It's not gonna
be that bad.
Speaker 8 (01:03:05):
You're dead. He's a Hall of Fame second baby, but he's.
Speaker 4 (01:03:08):
A hall of famer.
Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
He won a if you can win a Gold Glove
anywhere you can be in a left fielder.
Speaker 8 (01:03:14):
I'm not putting in the outfield.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
All right, Well, we're gonna take a quick break here
on that note. Chris Gordy. Uh So, Chris Gordy says,
alto bay and left field. Ain't nobody got time for that?
What do you say, ain't no body got time for?
Or you also want to tell people to shut their
bomb ass up? Something you want to get off your chest,
something you can't believe. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety The Phone Number seven one three two
(01:03:37):
one two five seven ninety. Favorite segment of the week
coming up next year on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:03:42):
Care let again, let me again, deer let again?
Speaker 11 (01:03:45):
Tampident he.
Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
Gear, let me get again again, deer let again?
Speaker 5 (01:03:53):
Damfid it?
Speaker 11 (01:04:02):
Gordy?
Speaker 8 (01:04:03):
You start?
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
Okay, I'm fine, I'm back, dude. Anybody get time with
this cough I've been having for like two weeks. I
don't know what is going on.
Speaker 4 (01:04:13):
Will not go away.
Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
Sorry, I just got into a little bit of a
coughing fit right as we were getting back here on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:04:22):
Sounds like is Gordy here? Okay? Sounds like man, maybe
cut him off?
Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
This is just a delight, all right, Welcome back to
the Tommys Show with Ross. We are improvising. Gordy is
out in New Orleans at Media Row as they're calling
it rather than Radio Row for Sports Talk seven ninety,
tracking down some good guests.
Speaker 4 (01:04:47):
Unfortunately, though, we just did get the news that Carrissa
Thompson is not feeling well and not going to be
able to join us here on Radio Row. Gordy, what's
the latest on Carissa Thompson?
Speaker 8 (01:05:02):
Is she okay? Yeah? I think so, but yeah, we
just got the words she is canceling all her interviews.
She is under the weather. So no Carissa Thompson today.
Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
That's that's disappointing. That's unfortunate.
Speaker 2 (01:05:17):
All right, Well, that was the time of the week
where if you got something that is bothering you, you
want to say, ain't nobody.
Speaker 4 (01:05:23):
Got time for that? Or shut Joe bumass up?
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
You call the phone lines at seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven ninety Uh, Gordy, I'm gonna go in
and let you start.
Speaker 8 (01:05:36):
Well, the thing I don't have time for, Ross is
we have There's this guy and I'll be sensitive here.
There's a guy in a wheelchair of a I think
he's a vent but he's becoming a radio row for
well over a decade. I've seen him here forever. He
comes up to when you're in the middle of interviews
(01:05:56):
and rolls up and like try say he did this
war with Bird co star with us, and I had
multiple people tell me this guy does this all the time.
He hawks guests and like interrupts other people's guests on
Radio Row to try to get guts for his Joe.
And it's like, dude, wait till they're finished and leaving
the booth that they're at to try to get your
but like he just what's the step on everybody's toes?
(01:06:18):
And and nobody got time for that?
Speaker 11 (01:06:21):
Hey nobody get tam Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
That was always fun seeing really pushy people. I'm not
really a pushy person by nature, and I don't think
you either are Gordy, but it's like, unfortunately, you got
to get a little bit pushy if you want all
the right guests at Radio Row, which is just.
Speaker 8 (01:06:39):
So yeah, No, I get being pushy, but like, I mean,
can you imagine, like is there any where else you
would do that, just like in the middle of y Hey, hey,
what am I getting on? Like dude, I'm literally in
the middle of doing you know, Like so.
Speaker 2 (01:06:51):
Anyway seven one three two one two five, seven ninety
if you would like to get in seven one three
two one two five.
Speaker 4 (01:07:01):
Anybody got tired of this? Rockets loss last night to
the Brooklyn Nets.
Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
You are up four points with nine and a half
seconds to go. You didn't even really deserve to win
the game anyways, but to completely choke that way to
where you give up the three to Keyon quote Johnson.
I was gonna say, Coleman to Keyon Johnson, and then
(01:07:24):
a men, Thompson, we love you, a men Thompson.
Speaker 4 (01:07:27):
You're so great, you're so smart, you're so athletic, high basketball,
a Q. All the accolades that you have been given
you deserve, but you can't throw that ball away with
three seconds on a five second count. At the very least,
don't panic in that moment and.
Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
Call a timeout. Just call the time out. Move on,
get to the other side of the floor, and you're
gonna be fine. And you're not gonna be able to
give away the ball under your own basket with limited
time left. It pokes out and you're a bad pass.
D'Angelo Russell makes at three. The Rockets lost. They choked
last night in Brooklyn. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Speaker 4 (01:08:05):
Ain't nobody got time for it?
Speaker 8 (01:08:10):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
I hope so seven one three, two, one two five
seven ninety If you got something you want to get
off your chest seven one three two one two five
seven ninety Connor mcgovernent, go ahead, The floor is yours.
Speaker 10 (01:08:22):
I mean, every week we can say, ain't nobody got
time for Houston traffic? Uh, But this weekend I feel
like it deserves a special shout out. So as a
lot of us already know, a portion of I ten
near the Heights has closed down two of its lanes
and they're doing construction over there. Forty five south towards
Galveston House construction construction schedules for the weekend. And now
(01:08:43):
the Texas Department of Transportation has just announced a fullclosure
of Interstate sixty nine Highway fifty nine northbound mainlanes at
Kelly Street for two consecutive weekends. And that's just really
gonna screw up my travel plans as I reside in Humble.
So ain't nobody got time for all the huge in
highway construction going on this early spring or late winter?
(01:09:07):
I don't know, but it's it's just really inconvenient. Three
major highways going through stuff right now.
Speaker 2 (01:09:13):
I don't know what's going on. It seems like it's
getting progressively worse and worse. You know, Like sometimes you're like, oh,
you know, and it's the weekend, there's not gonna be
any traffic.
Speaker 5 (01:09:20):
That's like good.
Speaker 4 (01:09:20):
It's almost like that's when the most traffic is. Yeah,
it's impossible to get anywhere at any point in this town. Weekdays, weekends,
it doesn't seem to matter. There's always something under construction.
I'm with e Connor McGovern it's quite ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
Ain't nobody gets hunted, Ain't nobody got time for any
of it. I've had a coughing fit basically this entire segment.
This is ridiculous. I don't know what's going on. I
don't know what kind of whooping cough I caught or whatever,
but this is the worst cough I've ever had in
my life. It's I'm so upset and tired and sick
and tired and sick and tired of this. I don't
want this coff to shut its bum ass up too, shit, So.
Speaker 5 (01:09:58):
Bum ass up? Man?
Speaker 4 (01:10:01):
All right, Cordy, you got anything else?
Speaker 8 (01:10:04):
Yeah, I don't know. Did you see the Steven A.
Smith report that's out there?
Speaker 5 (01:10:07):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (01:10:08):
Oh no, he's reporting something.
Speaker 8 (01:10:12):
Well, no, it's a report about Okay, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:10:14):
Now is he running for president?
Speaker 8 (01:10:17):
Well, front off of sports put out there, Stephen A.
Smith is emerging as a potential Democratic candidate presidential election.
Oh my god, I would say nobody got time for that,
but maybe we do have some time for that.
Speaker 4 (01:10:39):
I don't want to get too political, but Democrats.
Speaker 15 (01:10:44):
Come on, what you're doing, what you're doing, Democrats, let's
get let's get this.
Speaker 4 (01:10:51):
Is this, this bought up situation is out of control.
You've got these illegal immigrants coming over here. It's it's preposterous.
Speaker 8 (01:11:02):
If Stephen A. Runs as the Democratic presidential candidate, we
need Chris mad Dog Russo as the Republican and just
let them debate. I will tune in for that.
Speaker 4 (01:11:10):
These tarrifts are out of control. You gotta stop with
the terrorists. Justin Jordan, who was a scrub?
Speaker 8 (01:11:22):
Come on, that's gold. Oh my god, probably bad, Probably
bad for the country.
Speaker 4 (01:11:27):
I mean, look, he's built for this. He's gonna win
whatever presidential bab he's on.
Speaker 5 (01:11:31):
I guess.
Speaker 8 (01:11:35):
He's already got a strong suit game.
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
I mean, for that to come out of your mouth,
who would be even running? Who would be the Republican guy? DeSantis?
In twenty twenty eight.
Speaker 8 (01:11:41):
Or whoever probably on the who's the VP? Vance?
Speaker 4 (01:11:46):
Oh yeah, JD Vance? What JD Fance just said was unconscionable.
I can't believe that would even come out of your mouth. Actually,
wait a minute, you know what, it's already a dog
and pony show for entertainment. This country has bought and
sold a long long time. Go you know what, you
know what' screw it. Let's do it.
Speaker 5 (01:12:03):
Steven A.
Speaker 4 (01:12:04):
Smith Democratic candidates, Skip Bayless, Republican Pig candidate, Let's do it,
do it. I'm all for it. I do have time
for that.
Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
All right, let's get in a couple of people who
have got in in on the phone lines. I do
appreciate your Felipe. What's up, Felipe?
Speaker 4 (01:12:22):
Well, I agree with that, Stephen name Skip Bayless. That'd
be some great, great TV comedy. I would they would
just do a debate every week. It would be great.
Speaker 5 (01:12:32):
Just coming up with words. They don't really understand.
Speaker 4 (01:12:34):
They're just saying anything they can word on it at
this point.
Speaker 16 (01:12:38):
It was said earlier today, and it was promises by
Matt Thomas, and the people need it, the people deserve it,
the people want it.
Speaker 8 (01:12:48):
Ain't nobody got time. But Chris Forty not to give
us a stake New Orleans accedent. We need it.
Speaker 4 (01:12:54):
I'm gonna go.
Speaker 11 (01:12:56):
Ain't nobody got time for that.
Speaker 4 (01:12:58):
The people are demanding you go full New Orleans style
on us. Gordy.
Speaker 8 (01:13:03):
Yeah, I think maybe I need to run into like
Bobby a Bear or something.
Speaker 2 (01:13:06):
Yeah, get you in the mode, get you in the mood.
You gotta go talk to some Native New Orleanians.
Speaker 8 (01:13:12):
You just gotta slow your words a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:13:14):
So yeah, yeah, and you go and throw baby.
Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:13:18):
Actually, you got a couple of hurricanes, you'd be doing
all right, and you.
Speaker 8 (01:13:21):
Never asked Cole's your family? You go, how's your mom?
And them?

can do this. You could pull this off, Gordy, Come on, man.
Speaker 8 (01:13:31):
Some some words, sink becomes zinc some reason. I don't
know why soda becomes Yeah, there's no feeder road, it's
it's uh, what do they call your service road?
Speaker 4 (01:13:44):
I was somewhere and this woman spilled This New Orleans
woman spilled soda, and she was like, I need to
PoTA be a sword on the table. I'll say, excuse me,
what'd you say yeah really on.
Speaker 8 (01:13:55):

Speaker 4 (01:17:19):
Are you serious?
Speaker 5 (01:17:21):

Speaker 8 (01:17:21):
It's causing quite a start.
Speaker 2 (01:17:23):

guys on media row.
Speaker 8 (01:17:34):
He's got a mob around him, like what other commercial celebrities.
Could we have out here? The flow from Progressive? Could
we get here?
Speaker 2 (01:17:41):
Yeah, they've had him. Well, they used to have that
Miller High life guy out there, but then he died.
Speaker 4 (01:17:46):
Oh yeah, that was just fortunate, very unfortunate. Hell del

back to me. Yeah, there you go, that's the guy.
Speaker 2 (01:17:57):
So recording was that from the nineteen seventies. I had
a huge hits on it. That makes a lot more sense.
Speaker 8 (01:18:07):
That was from a commercial break during the Bob Hope
show back in the day.
Speaker 4 (01:18:10):
Okay, wonderful, and I think it was a Coldgate hour. Okay,
So I'm glad that guy's out there.
Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
Have you You know what one of the beautiful perks
of being out there in Radio Row is getting a
bunch of like free stuff. Have you been able to
get some free candy bars or toothpaste or old spice
or anything?
Speaker 8 (01:18:28):
No, they they haven't.
Speaker 6 (01:18:29):
Really.
Speaker 8 (01:18:29):
The only thing that they're giving out is Bounty has
a setup and they have they're giving out wings. So
as you know, excuse me, yeah, there's never food food
on Radio Row. Bounty is giving out packets of five wings,
the dryer poles, yes, and they're giving you paper towels
to go with it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:49):
So, oh, is it like a joke, like I get
this on your clothes and then wash them with bounty.
Oh no, bounty paper towels. Okay, so I think bounce.
I'm sorry, I was thinking of bounce.
Speaker 5 (01:18:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:18:59):
I was thinking of the dryer sheets, not bounty, the
paper rolls, the quicker picker up or if you.
Speaker 8 (01:19:04):
Will, okay, thicker quicker picker up.
Speaker 4 (01:19:07):
Okay, well hmm interesting, okay.
Speaker 8 (01:19:12):
Yeah, they're they're they're the most popular item. There's nothing
else being really being given away, which is a missed opportunity.
You probably could have brought some uh I don't know,
some Matt Thomas bobbleheads or something to giving them out.
Speaker 4 (01:19:22):
Any other fun spectacles going on out there.
Speaker 8 (01:19:25):
That's it right now. It's kind of it's kind of
dying down.
Speaker 4 (01:19:28):
Right now, dying down. It's not even noon, that means down.
Speaker 8 (01:19:32):
But it was all a buzz earlier.
Speaker 4 (01:19:33):
You know, because of the shirtless old spice guy.
Speaker 8 (01:19:37):
There's a there's some Eagles fan with face paint on
walking around.
Speaker 2 (01:19:40):

started opening these things up to the public and charging people.

Speaker 8 (01:20:27):

the Media Nite though, was Jamis Winston interviewing players. That
was really funny.
Speaker 4 (01:20:35):
Oh yeah, I did see that. Good for Jamis, he's.
Speaker 8 (01:20:40):
The next like as soon as his as soon as
his playing career is over, he's got a media career.

Even though Matt is OUDI continues to miss time. Ros
Viria with you. Chris Gordy is in New Orleans at
Radio Row. You know what, I'm gonna continue to call
it Radio Row, Media Row whatever. Who cares. Conda McGovern
is here as well, and he is here to bring
us all the top sports news items of the day
in this segment we call the news at noon, take Honor.
(01:22:16):
How are you, hey, Ross, I'm doing all right.
Speaker 5 (01:22:19):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:22:20):
You having fun with the split Side Show as a producer, Yeah,
I'm having fun. It's a big deal. Okay, you're you're
used to it with Matt. He's a easy just say.
Speaker 8 (01:22:28):
Matt does it every day.
Speaker 4 (01:22:29):
Yeah, I know. I haven't seen Matt in like a month.
Speaker 2 (01:22:32):
I think I've seen him like two days in the
entire year of twenty twenty five at this point, it's ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (01:22:37):
But anyways, he'll be back tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:22:39):
What is the top sports news items or what are
the top sports news items oh the day?
Speaker 10 (01:22:44):
Well, speaking of Matt Thomas, he was on the road
with the Brockets, and the Rockets lost again to the
Brooklyn Nets last night, this time on the road in
a ninety nine to ninety seven final. Brooklyn was trailing
ninety seven to ninety three when Keon Johnson made a
three from the wing with eight point one seconds left,
and then Thompson then threw an inbounds pass that skip
past Dylan Brooks and ended up in the hands of
D'Angelo Russell, who buried three to put the Nets ahead
(01:23:07):
with three point four second scremating.
Speaker 3 (01:23:09):
Costno Wolfa's gonna inbound the ball with nine and a
half to go, Owolba lost Courtkeon Johnson left side three, yes,
ninety seven ninety six.
Speaker 4 (01:23:22):
Thompson loss the basketball straight.
Speaker 1 (01:23:25):
Away three Russell yes, Oh my goodness.
Speaker 4 (01:23:29):
Now with three point four seconds rebeating.
Speaker 10 (01:23:33):
The Nets made two to three pointers in the final
ten seconds, Russell hits the ice in his vein Selly
and the Rockets.
Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
Have now lost, have now lost for sure. They just
got swept by the Brooklyn Nets. Cordy, this does not
feel good. That was such a choke last night. I mean,
it just is what it is. It happens, you don't
want it to happen. But the team, Emiodoka said it himself.
They only played three and a half quarters and then
they try to steal one at the in with Shingoon dominating, and.
Speaker 4 (01:24:02):
Then that happened.
Speaker 2 (01:24:02):
Just disheartening for a team that's looking to stay atop
the Western Conference.
Speaker 8 (01:24:07):
Yeah, they're one of their best players. Didn't even play
Cam Thomas from LSU.
Speaker 4 (01:24:12):
Oh god, are we really going on this? Come on, man,
Tarry Easton didn't play from LSU either. Why all these
LSU guys hurt?
Speaker 2 (01:24:20):
I know they could use them, Yeah, they could use them,
but they didn't have them last night. And people are
asking like, is this the real Rockets? Is water finding
its level?
Speaker 8 (01:24:30):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:24:30):
I understand. They did beat the Cavaliers and the Celtics.
All three of those games were really close and coin flippers,
if you will, And there were some coin flippers recently,
the loss against the Grizzlies, Nicks last night against the Nets.
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
That was less than a coin flipper. That was bad
beat last night that both of those threes went in
and you turn the ball over. But they're still a
really good team. They need to get Fred van Vliet back.
As long as they're staying fully healthy. I still fully
believe they're one of the top four teams in the West,
and hopefully one of the top two three because we
know that Thunder are gonna run away with.
Speaker 5 (01:25:02):
It in the West.
Speaker 8 (01:25:04):
Winnable games coming up too.
Speaker 4 (01:25:07):
Yeah, that's gonna help.
Speaker 2 (01:25:08):
And this is just a horrible stretch that they're on
fourteen games out of eighteen on the road, including nine
out of the last eight. Taking on the Timberwolves hopefully,
well Timberwolves is not really gonna be easy. But then Dallas,
we'll see what they got. Toronto, Phoenix is not great,
some more winnable games, Utah in the mix. San Antonio
(01:25:28):
actually might be really good. But I just want them
to get to the All Star Break, be healthy as
possible down the stretch, and they're still gonna be, in
my opinion, a top four Western Conference team.
Speaker 5 (01:25:39):
All right?
Speaker 4 (01:25:39):
What else is going on in the news at noon?
Conna mcgevin.
Speaker 10 (01:25:43):
In other Rockets news, the Boston Celtics are trading Jaden
Springer in their twenty twenty twenty thirty second round pick
to the Rockets. Both teams are exchanging heavily protected at
second rounders.
Speaker 2 (01:25:54):
According to Shams, Yeah, I saw a breakdown from Bobby marks.
He does the NBES. He's like the NBA capologist for them, Gordy.
He says that the Celtics get a huge reduction in
their tax penalty. It goes from sixty five million to
fifty million. The Rockets get Jayden Springer. They also get
(01:26:16):
a second round pick out of the deal. And maybe
you're thinking first round talent, maybe we can turn him
into something, especially on the defensive side.
Speaker 5 (01:26:29):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 8 (01:26:30):
I mean, we'll see. I saw somebody say you're just
taking a flyer on a guy that's a former first
round pick, So see if there's something there.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
Yeah, and then at the end of the day, we
know what the Celtics did. It's one of these very
very very small type of deals. So not an earth
shaker from the Rockets. But do you think, okay, if
I had to say, a huge impact deal. There are
some Rockets fans pushing for them to make a push
for Kevin Durant, who is pretty squarely in the market.
It seems like a mid level deal or just a
(01:27:00):
deal like this, or no deal at all in the
coming days. Trade deadline Tomorrow two pm is the deadline,
and we'll have the coverage for you here, of course,
on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 4 (01:27:11):
Ninety, I'm gonna say no deal, no deal at all,
like this is it? Yeah, I could see that. I
could see that definitely being the case for the Houston Rockets.
I just certainly don't think it's gonna be. They're not
big game hunting. I don't think I think they're gonna
stay the course. They like their guys.
Speaker 2 (01:27:28):
They're gonna continue to let them develop and then go
from there because they're already exceeding expectations even if they
finish I mean anywhere in the top playoff, a top
six of the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:27:37):
Certainly in the top four.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
They're ahead of expectations, ahead of schedule in this phase
to run that they are on what else you got,
conn McGovern.
Speaker 10 (01:27:46):
I mean, speaking of the NBA tread deadline trade deadline
that is tomorrow afternoon. We saw some more moves this morning,
as the Milwaukee Bucks are trading Chris Middleton, A J. Johnson,
and a pick swap to the Washington Wizards For Kyle Kuzma,
Patrick Poulan Jr.
Speaker 4 (01:27:59):
And a second round draft compensation.
Speaker 10 (01:28:02):
Dallas is sending Quentin Grimes in Philadelphia's twenty twenty five
second round pick back to the seventy six ers for
Caleb Martin as well.
Speaker 4 (01:28:08):
So two bigger trades going on this morning. So Kyle,
it's gonna be Kyle Kuzma as part of a big
three with Dame Lillard and and Giannis's Intokoumpo or are
they gonna try to move somebody else. I think they
might be set with that big three moving on from
Chris Middleton.
Speaker 2 (01:28:22):
Ugh, I mean, is Chris Middleton that washed? He'd been
a big part of what they've been trying to do
the last couple of years. He's been very good defensively.
I guess he is thirty three years old at this point.
But as far as like a three and d wing,
it's kind of surprising to me that they would move
on from him and go to go go to Kyle Kuzma.
(01:28:44):
I don't know any thoughts on that. Gordy, you're gonna
break down the trade?
Speaker 8 (01:28:48):
I mean that, do you is your gut that we're
gonna get a big trade? I mean that the Durant stuff.
I don't know that they're floating it out there. I
know the Rockets have always had their eyes on Durant,
but I don't know, Man, I don't want to blow
up what you're building here, but you're a Longhorn Homer.
You'd love to see the Grand Rockets.
Speaker 4 (01:29:06):
I don't know that I would be over the moon
about it just because of his age, Because if what
kind of pieces.
Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
Are you going to have to give up as far
as the core of this team to acquire a thirty
six year old. The Rockets aren't in win now. It
all costs mode other teams maybe, but not the Rockets.
So I actually wouldn't be in a big way in
favor of that move. I would not want them to
disrupt this young core in what they're doing unless they think,
(01:29:35):
all right, we got to push all our chips now
and try to win a championship and then that's that.
That would be kind of going staying off course. It
would be making a huge leap into where they are
in their development. It'd be like skipping a couple of
grades in school or something like. They're just not It
doesn't make logical sense with the path that they've been
on lately.
Speaker 8 (01:29:56):
Yeah, I'm just again, I've said this before and I'll
say it again. You sucked for you sucked so bad
for several years and you were rewarded with high draft picks,
and you put a lot of work into the scouting
and everything to acquire those players. I hang on to
them continue the development. I mean, they're still younger, they're
(01:30:16):
still developing, they're growing together, chemistry, all that. I just
don't want to give that up for a chance at
a at Oh well, let's go get this big name person.
Speaker 2 (01:30:25):
Yeah, certainly, not somebody that's thirty six years old. I
actually would have been more okay with like a dearon
Fox type of move, just because he's so much younger.
But clearly it seemed like he was on a path
of going to the Spurs the entire time. So it
is what it is on that front. But yeah, a
thirty six year old, even though he's an all time
great towards the end of his career, I'm good. I
(01:30:49):
think on Kevin Durant, now, if it happened, it'd be
exciting for this year obviously in the in the interest
and intrigue would go up. But if it were me
and I was GM of the of the Houston Rockets,
which I'm not, I'd be staying the course.
Speaker 4 (01:31:03):
What else you got? Connor McGovern on the news at noon.
Speaker 10 (01:31:08):
Yesterday, the Astros hosted their annual media luncheon, and General
manager Danny Brown got up on the podium and referred
to Alex Bregman in the past tense, saying, quote, we're
missing out on Bregman. When asked to clarify his statements,
Dan Brown said this, well, I mean.
Speaker 13 (01:31:24):
Ultimately, we're still having conversations about internally, and I could
probably leave it a down.
Speaker 17 (01:31:32):
Okay, what's the frustration level on that progress or lack
of you says on break breaknant situation decision from their side,
and I guess we all side as well.
Speaker 8 (01:31:45):
Yeah, I mean Bregman's a free agent. You know, they
can decide to do what they want to do with so.
Speaker 13 (01:31:51):
And as long as he's a free agent, we'll just
continue to have our internal conversations about him.
Speaker 8 (01:31:56):
Still being development.
Speaker 10 (01:31:58):
Brown later said the door isn't closed and like he said,
continue to have internal internal conversations, but there has been
no new dialogue with Bregman's agent, Scott Morris hm hmm.
Speaker 2 (01:32:09):
Yeah, it's that door has just got to be closed,
or at least Dana Brown's mind.
Speaker 8 (01:32:14):
It is my favorite part of that clip Ross is
where he goes what progress, what.
Speaker 4 (01:32:20):
We're talking about?
Speaker 2 (01:32:20):
Yeah, he's like playing, he's like you talking about frustration
with who Alex?
Speaker 6 (01:32:24):
What?
Speaker 4 (01:32:25):
Never heard of the guy? It's almost like, let's just
move on. He didn't expect to be taking Alex Bregman
questions on February fourth, He just didn't.
Speaker 8 (01:32:36):
Where are you on progress? What progress? Oh? We oh
yeah we're okah yeah yeah we're still uh yeah, we're
still talking about it. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:32:45):
Yeah, we're working I am, we're working it out.
Speaker 8 (01:32:48):
I mean, like again, if they really hit up to
tell you, they would tell you.
Speaker 2 (01:32:51):
He was like a shooter mcgavern and happy happy Gilmore
well happy? Oh yeah, where's he finished?
Speaker 4 (01:32:56):
Dead Last?
Speaker 8 (01:32:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:32:58):
Yeah I heard he had a good round.
Speaker 8 (01:32:59):
Yeah you had a good round though. Hey did you
see ross the d is down? Officially?
Speaker 5 (01:33:04):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (01:33:04):
On minute Maid?
Speaker 2 (01:33:06):
Yeah, minute made Park is being It's Dyke in the
park correct, not Daykin Park.
Speaker 7 (01:33:13):

Speaker 8 (01:33:14):

at noon, Connor, but minute Maid is coming down l
r P.
Speaker 4 (01:33:19):
They're gonna auction off Jim Crane's gonna auction off pieces
of the sign. Correct.
Speaker 8 (01:33:22):
Oh I would, I would, I'd put it in a bit,
you would Mini may park sign in your uh in
your man cave.
Speaker 4 (01:33:29):
How much you're gonna pay.
Speaker 8 (01:33:32):
One hundred?
Speaker 2 (01:33:33):
I think it's gonna go a little more and a
little more than that, Gordy really yeah, come on man, those.
Speaker 8 (01:33:41):
Are big letters. Though, I don't know if i'd maybe
you'd have to go in the backyard.
Speaker 4 (01:33:46):
Yeah, I get the whole sign in the backyard signing
and hanging up on your house.
Speaker 1 (01:33:51):
For that.
Speaker 2 (01:33:51):
Probably not you'd be getting a letter within milliseconds the
way the Hoa people are.
Speaker 4 (01:33:56):
Okay, that's the News at Noon with Connor McGovern. Connor,
thanks for bringing all the top sports news items.

Back to Matt Thomas and Ross Viareal on Sports Talk
seven ninety. Welcome back Sports Talk seven ninety. Rosser, you're real,
Chris Gordy with you. Connor McGovern is here.
Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
It is the Matt Thomas show with Matt Thomas out
traveling as he seems to do every single week lately,
and that's okay. Uh, we will be up in spring
training in a couple of weeks. That should be fun.
Speaker 4 (01:35:56):
As you mentioned, Gordy, the kind of the media, the
unveiling of the hashtag, which, by the way, how do
you feel about the built for this hashtag for the
Houston Astros.
Speaker 8 (01:36:05):
I like it. They are built for this, built for
what for overcoming losing players but still staying world serious contender.
Speaker 4 (01:36:17):
Okay, yeah, I guess we'll see. And we've been talking
a lot about the go ahead.
Speaker 8 (01:36:23):
It's like something of the kids say, right like, I'm
built for this.
Speaker 5 (01:36:26):
Built for this.
Speaker 4 (01:36:27):
Yeah, it's something else. It feels a little pass a though,
but whatever, what do I know.
Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
I'm not in the marketing department making all that money.
I thought, you know, at first, when I heard relentless,
I didn't like it. But as the season went on,
I kind of liked relentless, So maybe I'll warm up
to it as it goes along.
Speaker 8 (01:36:42):
Yeah, turn out turn out the postseason they weren't very relentless.
Speaker 2 (01:36:46):
It also got fun when they were losing game. It
was like relentless one run game losses, relentless Ryan Presley
base Runners. But then they relentlessly won the AO West.
But they went eighty eight games last year. And is
that person talking to you, Gordy? Oh sounds like this
(01:37:09):
is okay, this is listening to this. Cordy's getting offered guests.
Speaker 4 (01:37:14):
Okay, crawfish.
Speaker 8 (01:37:18):
Yeah, It's It's funny, man, the they like people see
you on a headset.
Speaker 2 (01:37:26):
Yeah, and they still can talk to you. It happens
to us we're on remote. I love all you people
who come out and see us on remote. You're amazing
and we appreciate every single one of you that listen
to us. But when we're talking on headsets, we're on air,
it's just we can't really talk to you.
Speaker 4 (01:37:40):
No, that was great. She just offer you crawfish.
Speaker 8 (01:37:43):
I think so. I mean that's a good it's a
nice comp you know, But like, I don't know, I
guess maybe next year, you know what I'm gonna do, speaker,
because when a speaker is pumping out audio, you know
that person's on the air.
Speaker 4 (01:37:56):
It still doesn't stop people for whatever reason.
Speaker 8 (01:37:59):
And when you know what, uss the handful of people
have come and approach me while we're on air. No
real appealing guests.
Speaker 2 (01:38:05):
Yeah, I was actually gonna say that while you were
talking to her, I was gonna be I was. I
was kind of doing like a like as a nature
show and you're out in nature, Gordy, like, all.
Speaker 4 (01:38:15):
Right, folks over here, Chris Good, he's being approached by
a PR person.
Speaker 2 (01:38:19):
When you approach by PR, you do not want to
get anytime you get approached by a guess, it is
not a good guest.
Speaker 11 (01:38:25):
Good guest.
Speaker 4 (01:38:25):
You have to hunt and find.
Speaker 8 (01:38:27):
What you don't get is the PR girl coming over going, hey,
I have ray lewis next album.
Speaker 4 (01:38:32):
Well you might want to be watching out on that one.
Speaker 5 (01:38:34):
Well, but you know what I mean, Like, it's not.
Speaker 8 (01:38:37):
Hey, I just wanted to come by and tell you
guys Collins from the Texans. I saw y'all were Houston.
Speaker 4 (01:38:42):
Yeah, we've got Eli manning for you if you'd like.
Speaker 2 (01:38:46):
No, it's usually some guy you've never It's unfortunate because look,
they're just trying to do their job, you understand, and
it's their job to go pimp out some guests that
nobody wants.
Speaker 4 (01:38:56):
It's like, hey, we've got the King of Barbecue ribs.
He was to come on for a couple of.
Speaker 8 (01:39:02):
Sime actually would take that. That would be really funny.
I would try. I would.
Speaker 4 (01:39:06):
Now we did that one year. We're like, no, we're good.
Speaker 2 (01:39:08):
He's like, yeah, we got the King of He's got
the he's the best rib cooker in America. It's like, no,
we don't want to give out people rib tips on
the on the show.
Speaker 8 (01:39:17):
I saw that the comedian guy was here the other day,
Craig Gas.
Speaker 4 (01:39:20):
Oh my god, god, he's there every year. Hey, guys,
what have me on?
Speaker 5 (01:39:25):
Let me know.
Speaker 4 (01:39:26):
I mean, Craig a nice guy.
Speaker 8 (01:39:29):
They love to sell him as you know, he's he's
he's been on Family Guy. Yeah, like nine years ago
he did a voice on Family Guy.
Speaker 4 (01:39:36):
Hey, he's been on an American Dad.
Speaker 8 (01:39:39):
That's one of those things like if you get on
one show once, like I did an episode of Simpsons,
and then I go he's been featured on the Simpsons.
Speaker 2 (01:39:46):
And yeah, or like some random Adult Swim cartoon network
show that nobody's ever heard of.
Speaker 4 (01:39:52):
Yeah, this is from Adult Swim.
Speaker 2 (01:39:53):
Like that's how they introduced you on the Open Mic
Night or something, or like at the at the Comedy Showcase.
Speaker 4 (01:40:00):
He might have heard him on Adult Swim. No, I
haven't heard him on Adult Swim.
Speaker 8 (01:40:04):
Yeah, the guy who like fifteen years ago did one
appearance on Jimmy Fallon. They go oh as scene on
Yes Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Speaker 2 (01:40:13):
Absolutely, you've seen him on What is It America's Top Comic.
He was eliminated in the first round. They showed him
for six seconds and he did not even make it through. Folks,
come and check him out.
Speaker 4 (01:40:26):
It's basic.
Speaker 8 (01:40:26):
A lot of New Orleans people to Mario Davis from
the Saints is making the rounds. I mean, it's a
lot of.
Speaker 4 (01:40:32):
Yeah, there's a home right. You feel like it happened
in Houston. There was like a bunch of people from
around Houston area were walking around Radio Row.
Speaker 8 (01:40:39):
Well, if you remember that was seventeen, aj Hinch made
the rounds on Radio Row.
Speaker 4 (01:40:44):
Yeah, we'll like, what the heck is aj Hinch doing
up here?
Speaker 8 (01:40:46):
Like, I mean, we had him because we had the
astros and breaking down the shuit was like, yeah's people
talk at Super Bowl, Like, let's switch gears and talk
some baseball.
Speaker 4 (01:40:54):
Hey, aj Hinch, do you think Matt Ryan and the
Falcons can get this thing done?
Speaker 8 (01:40:58):
Little did they know he would go on to be
the World Series champion that year.
Speaker 4 (01:41:03):
So yes, yes he did, and then years later he
would be fired.
Speaker 8 (01:41:12):
I still wonder what I was talking with somebody about
that yesterday, the what if if they had gone the
route of it was the Red Sox guy that they
that just got the one year of suspension, had the
Astros just suspended Hinch and Luno for one year, what
would have happened?
Speaker 7 (01:41:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:41:28):
How they How nobody talks about the Boston Red Sox
being dinged for cheating twice and they hired the manager
that got fired as one of the orchestrators of the
Houston Astro scandal, and the Astros still get all the
heat for cheating.
Speaker 4 (01:41:41):
Mm hmm, doesn't make any sense. Okay.
Speaker 8 (01:41:45):
That was somewhere. I was somewhere recently with a bunch
of people, uh, and it was people from all over
the country, and they were like, oh, yeah, Chris does
uh some pre postgame shows for the Astros. And one
guy was like, oh, I'm not even gonna say anything.
I was like, no, please say something. I would love
to debate this with you.
Speaker 4 (01:42:02):
No, I don't like getting into it.
Speaker 2 (01:42:05):
I don't what is the old saying like, do not
get caught up arguing with a fool because people from
a distance won't know the difference, or something like that.
Speaker 4 (01:42:13):
Basically that don't even waste your time.
Speaker 8 (01:42:16):
You were starting to get run through. I was trying
to remember who with the past hashtags from yours past route,
Well that was that was the the bad years.
Speaker 4 (01:42:28):
Yeah, take it back that one hash to take it back.
Speaker 8 (01:42:32):
Yeah, they tried.
Speaker 4 (01:42:34):
They didn't take it back at that point. They did
in twenty twenty two, Well, there.
Speaker 8 (01:42:38):
Was some remember the stupid the fan interference with Mookie
Bets and the Red Sox and all that stuff. Uh yeah,
it was altovy. It was a home run, but they
overturned it anyway.
Speaker 4 (01:42:53):
For the H was in twenty twenty one for the H.
I like that one that much good.
Speaker 5 (01:43:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:43:01):
Tweet us at sports RV at Chris Gordy.
Speaker 8 (01:43:05):
What was last year?
Speaker 4 (01:43:06):
Last year was relentless?
Speaker 8 (01:43:08):
Relentless?
Speaker 4 (01:43:09):
Oh eighteen was never settled, never settle. I just what
Google astros hashtags and I'm getting some of them.
Speaker 8 (01:43:17):
They've all been good. What was the Texans this year?
Speaker 4 (01:43:19):
Each town made, Yes, each town made It's like CG.
Straws not from Agetown. What are we talking about?
Speaker 8 (01:43:28):
None of these guys.
Speaker 4 (01:43:29):
Oh twenty twenty two was level up? Yeah, I forgot
about that.
Speaker 5 (01:43:35):
That was okay.
Speaker 4 (01:43:36):
It's fine.
Speaker 8 (01:43:38):
Rockets have lift off this year.
Speaker 4 (01:43:40):
Yeah, I like lyft off.
Speaker 8 (01:43:43):
What's next year? Boom? Hashtag boom?
Speaker 4 (01:43:46):
No hashtag landing? What do you do after to lift off?
Speaker 8 (01:43:49):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:43:51):
I'm confused.
Speaker 8 (01:43:56):
It's the twenty twenty five Houston Rocket season hashtag separates.
Speaker 2 (01:44:01):
Oh yeah, I don't think it's gonna work. I don't
think the analogy works. It didn't carry that far.
Speaker 4 (01:44:05):
Gordy.
Speaker 5 (01:44:06):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:44:07):
On that note, we're gonna take a break here on
The Mad Toms Show with Ross. Chris Cordy is at
New Orleans Super Bowl? So what we got anything booked?
Where's Stu Gotts.
Speaker 8 (01:44:19):
We're still in a holy pattern.
Speaker 4 (01:44:22):
We're still in a holy pattern with Stu Gotts, folks,
So you gotta stay tuned here. On Sports Talk seven ninety,
Chrissa Thompson has canceled on us.
Speaker 2 (01:44:30):
They're like, oh, look at that guy in Houston. Yeah,
we're not going over there. Let's tell them we're sick.
So thanks for that, Gordy. We appreciate it. We'll have
some other guests coming along. Gordy is out at Radio
Row in New Orleans. I am here in Houston and you.
Speaker 4 (01:44:42):
Can get in. Look, we're talking astros, talking about how
do you feel about L two A and left field?
If you had to guess how many games is L
TWOV going to play in left what's gonna happen with
the rest of the offseason? Rockets with the heartbreaking no
I will say it, choking loss last night to the
Brooklyn Nets. Anything else you want to get into seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
(01:45:03):
three two one two five seven ninety Welcome back here
(01:45:24):
on Sports Talk seven night, ROS VI Real with you
Chris Cordy as well.
Speaker 2 (01:45:29):
It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Matt Thomas
is traveling with the Houston Rockets. They are on to
Minneapolis as they continue this grueling stretch, and I understand
there's maybe some of you're like, no excuses, blah blah blah.
The team needs to win them, and I'm with you,
especially on that Brooklyn Nets game last night.
Speaker 4 (01:45:50):
They need to win that game. They have to win
that game. It's just.
Speaker 2 (01:45:55):
I mean, the way that the Western Conference is tightly
compacted to where you're still of nipping on the heels
of the Memphis Grizzlies, but now full two games back
of them, so you need to catch them with the
tiebreaker that you have. You just need to be even
in level with the Memphis Grizzlies. Nuggets are only one
game back. They've won three in a row. Lakers just
(01:46:16):
got a guy named Luka Doncic and have won three
games in a row. As it as it is, I've
officially taken them off a fraud alert, of course, and
Rob Polinka agreeing with me that they weren't championship contenders
the way that they were comprised. But now they have
Luka Doncic, and who knows if they're going to make
another piece, a move for another piece here in the
next day or so.
Speaker 4 (01:46:36):
So the Western Conference is tough.
Speaker 2 (01:46:38):
Losing to the lowly Brooklyn Nets who are not even
really trying to win and only playing three not playing
for three and a half quarters in that game certainly hurts.
You can get in at seven one three, two, one
two five seven ninety seven to one three two one two,
five seven to ninety the phone number as well Gordy
is joining us from New Orleans. He is down at
(01:46:59):
Radio Row. Any more interesting sights and sounds out there
in New Orleans? Gordian, did you pick up some crawfish?
Speaker 8 (01:47:05):
I've not seen it a crawfish, No, but uh, there
was a guy to my immediate left wearing a it
is a custom made tailor and Travis gold jacket he
has made in honor of it says Travis and Taylor
and it has a picture of them kissing.
Speaker 4 (01:47:24):
What it's like, it's a it's a jacket.
Speaker 8 (01:47:28):
Yeah, it's like a sports code, but it's sequenced.
Speaker 2 (01:47:31):
Gold, sequin gold, sequin jacket with Travis Kelcey and Taylor Swift.
Speaker 8 (01:47:38):
And at the bottom it says swifty nine.
Speaker 4 (01:47:41):
All right, keep an eye on this guy. He's a psychopa.
This guy is crazy.
Speaker 8 (01:47:46):
Everyone is taking pictures of it. Like that's the funny
thing about this. You want to get any attention, bring
anything that's slightly a spectacle.
Speaker 2 (01:47:53):
And you will get a million people. Yeah, we saw
that with the Asweiler can here in Houston.
Speaker 4 (01:47:58):
Correct.
Speaker 8 (01:48:00):
Yeah, well, yes, that was that was certainly one. There
was also when he dressed up like Mike Ditka. I
thought that was I thought that was funny.
Speaker 2 (01:48:11):
Yeah, a lot of people from Chicago really loved all that,
all that good stuff. But are are we gonna get
you dressed up as anything while you're out there, Gordy?
Speaker 8 (01:48:19):
I don't know. I should have like, here's what we
should have done hindsight. We should have found like Bounty
as a sponsor, could have like paid for me to
come dressed up as something.
Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
How just said as a giant paper towel.
Speaker 5 (01:48:30):
Roll?
Speaker 4 (01:48:32):
How about the bounty man in there? Bounty man like
a mustachio lumberjack or whatever.
Speaker 8 (01:48:38):
Well, what about like Boudro's butt paste sponsors me and
I'm like dressed up like coaching. I dressed up like
coach O, and I do interviews as coach O.
Speaker 4 (01:48:47):
Yeah, let's have it. Let's have you know what, let's
do an audition for that Coacho. How are things out there?
Speaker 8 (01:48:51):
Radio Row? Oh? Really good?
Speaker 5 (01:48:53):
Thanks?
Speaker 8 (01:48:54):
Roll?
Speaker 4 (01:48:56):
Yeah, maybe you do have a future in this, Gordy.
Speaker 2 (01:48:58):
Maybe we can get that going by the way I
was getting to thinking, we get Nick Kayley is now
the offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans and you're down
there in the Super Bowl for Radio Row.
Speaker 4 (01:49:08):
If you had to guess, are we gonna be at
Radio Row covering the Texans anytime, and I will say
in the next three years.
Speaker 8 (01:49:16):
In the Super Bowl. Yes, what are the future of
Super Bowl sites? I think what it's like Vegas again,
I think so, well, that's true, they just went to Vegas.
Maybe I'm thinking the National Championship.
Speaker 4 (01:49:30):
Let's see Levi Stadium is next year.
Speaker 8 (01:49:34):
Oh god, that I heard was the most expense the
people who went there for Super Bowl years ago and
National Championship was like, yeah, my hotel was nine hundred
a night and food every meal I had was one
hundred and fifty dollars. Like Santa Clair is not a
cheap place to stay.
Speaker 2 (01:49:51):
It looks like the usual suspects coming up. So you're
in New Orleans, which has hosted what like six seven
Super Bowls at this point.
Speaker 8 (01:49:58):
Well, yeah, they have the old ones like two Lane
Stadium back in the day.
Speaker 4 (01:50:02):
Yeah, go down to two Lane Stadium, kids the Super
Bowl and you.
Speaker 8 (01:50:07):
With a man with the half a foot kicked the
game with a fel that's true.
Speaker 2 (01:50:11):
Uh yeah, Levi's Stadium next year, Santa Clara after that
it'll be Sofi Stadium of course, l A and then
Mercedes Ben stadium.
Speaker 4 (01:50:21):
Yeah, in Atlanta. So this is the next three.
Speaker 8 (01:50:24):
We may go to that one. Mark your calendar in
market calendar. That'll be c J. Stroud will be fully
established as a star quarterback and uh yeah, and so
we'll look forward to that one.
Speaker 4 (01:50:38):
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not super optimistic right now.
Speaker 8 (01:50:43):
You have a few people about Nick Cayley and they
were like, yeah, I think he's good. Like nobody's like,
nobody's really stumping. It was like, yes, this is what
the Texans were missing.
Speaker 2 (01:50:54):
Nobody is saying that the John Carroll graduate the Nick
Cassario when they went to the same school as Casario
and they work together in the New England.
Speaker 8 (01:51:03):
A great James har James Harrison just walking by.
Speaker 2 (01:51:08):
Why don't you challenge him to an arm wrestling match?
Why did you get some real content for Sports Talk
seven ninety Gordy.
Speaker 8 (01:51:14):
He's another one that looks angry. Like if you thought
Vince Wilford looked angry, James Harrison looked really angry.
Speaker 2 (01:51:19):
Yeah, you should talk to him though, say heck, I
bet you, I bet you I can arm wrestle you
and beat you. I bet you a six pack of
bounty wings.
Speaker 8 (01:51:26):
We also have Greg Olsen standing by.
Speaker 4 (01:51:27):
He's uh, oh, is he still pissed off?
Speaker 2 (01:51:30):
Is he wearing a shirt of like Tom Brady at
the combine, looking all squirrely.
Speaker 4 (01:51:34):
And and raggedy like a big X through m. Yeah. Man,
he came out.
Speaker 2 (01:51:40):
Publicly talking about how he is mad that he got
off of those games and he's not working the Super
Bowl this year.
Speaker 4 (01:51:45):
Poor guy. He should.
Speaker 8 (01:51:49):
Be to be replaced by a guy who's not good
at this job, who's not as.
Speaker 4 (01:51:54):
Good as you.
Speaker 2 (01:51:54):
Oh, I just saw this picture you put up with
the Travis Kelcey swifty thing.
Speaker 4 (01:51:58):
Yeah, oh my god, this is this is ridiculous.
Speaker 8 (01:52:02):
Oh the other parts of Super Bowl swifty nine is
what it says.
Speaker 4 (01:52:05):
That's terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:52:07):
So I'm glad Greg greg Olsen at least gathered himself
enough to get out there and stump for Fox Sports.
We should try to get him on. I'd like to
hear him all pissed off of Tom Brady taking his job.
He went from ten million dollars a year to three
million dollars.
Speaker 8 (01:52:22):
Well, he's doing DraftKings. Here's the thing ross the big
name people they do all the big hitters, they do
very little on the local radio front.
Speaker 4 (01:52:32):
Use code nine eighty seven.
Speaker 2 (01:52:34):
DraftKings Pick six here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:52:37):
I got no problems with Draft Kings, bro no Born.
Speaker 8 (01:52:40):
I'm saying, it's like they're like a national whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:52:43):
Yeah, they're on with Dan Patrick and whatever or whoever
in national Jim Rum. But I mean we probably have
as many listeners as Jim Rum does nationally at this point.
Speaker 4 (01:52:52):
Anybody ever listen to that show? Where's it even come on?
Speaker 8 (01:52:55):
No? I saw he didn't even come this year, Like,
they don't even have it in the budget to send
Jim Roman.
Speaker 4 (01:53:00):
Ouch.
Speaker 2 (01:53:01):
You're playing that paying that giant contract he probably signed.
That's not even getting any return on that.
Speaker 8 (01:53:09):
Yeah, So we'll try to flex some people that I
just saw a couple buddies on one I know that
are here not really doing anything. My buddy Carter's here,
I May said him. I'm gonna say, Carter, I'll pay
you ten bucks if you can go get us a guest.
Just go get us anybody.
Speaker 4 (01:53:21):
Yeah you should.
Speaker 2 (01:53:21):
By the way, Sam is tweeting in he's wondering if
you're able to get Taylor mathis on as a guest
for Radio Row.
Speaker 4 (01:53:27):
I've not seen her but that would be a great
hit because Matt exactly, that would be perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:53:36):
You know what we're putting you on, Taylor mathis watch
get Her for some other show, not on the Matt
Thomas Show, and that would be hilarious.
Speaker 8 (01:53:46):
No, just the facts. He's on the Matt Thomas Show
the day he's off.
Speaker 2 (01:53:49):
Yeah, hmmm, that would be perfect. That is a great
call by Sam there on Twitter.
Speaker 8 (01:53:55):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:53:55):
Anyways, I was saying I was worried about the Texans
making the Super Bowl because let me just go through
this list for you, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson,
Joe Burrow, uh, and then CJ. Stroud and I don't
know what's gonna happen with otherthing. Maybe Drake may is
gonna be up and coming. AFC is stacked, man. You
(01:54:17):
got like six of the top ten quarterbacks over here,
and I guess, okay, that makes sense by conference mathematically
it's pretty close, but it's too much.
Speaker 8 (01:54:24):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:54:25):
I'm worried about the Texans and just because of how
good the AFC is. The good news is none of
those guys are in the AFC South, so you should
be able to win the division and get in.
Speaker 4 (01:54:34):
The playoffs and roll the dice and something good can happen.
Speaker 8 (01:54:37):
Yeah, it's just like it reminds me of you. We
didn't waste them, but like the Harden in Houston years
overlapped with the Golden.
Speaker 4 (01:54:45):
State, you were held back by dynasty.
Speaker 8 (01:54:48):
It sucks and so it may be one of these things.
We'll look back down the road.
Speaker 5 (01:54:51):
Go man.
Speaker 8 (01:54:52):
CJ. Stroud was one of the best what ifs, but
he just played in the Pat Mahomes ever.
Speaker 4 (01:54:57):
Oh dude, it could happen. I mean, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley,
Karl Malone, John Stockton, they all have rings. If it's
not for Michael Jordan yep.
Speaker 1 (01:55:08):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:55:09):
All right now I've upset myself.
Speaker 2 (01:55:11):
We're gonna take another break here on a Sports Talk
seven ninety We are in deep into hour number three.
Hour number four coming up. Gordy is joining us from
New Orleans out at Radio Row. We got some guests
coming up in the fourth hour. You want to get in,
you can at seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:55:31):
Good News, it's the Matt Thomas Show for lunch.
Speaker 12 (01:55:35):
Let that boring brown bag lunch run in the employee refrigerator.
Speaker 11 (01:55:40):
The Matt Thomas Show on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:55:52):
Welcome back to The Matt Thomas Show with Ross with
Chris Gordy. Chris Gordy with us out in New Orleans
and Radio Row or media Row, whatever you want to
call it. Ross with you here in studio.
Speaker 8 (01:56:05):
Now.
Speaker 4 (01:56:05):
We already we have people tweeting at Taylor trying to
get her on the show. Now, Cordy, I see that.
Speaker 8 (01:56:11):
Let's make it.
Speaker 4 (01:56:12):
She's not even there, is she?
Speaker 8 (01:56:14):
I don't know, Okay, don't know unless you ask, right.
Speaker 4 (01:56:18):
I guess you don't. All right.
Speaker 2 (01:56:20):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. So if I have this correct, Chrissa Thompson
has canceled on us, but we will get Longhorned legend
Jalen Ford on the show as we go along.
Speaker 8 (01:56:36):
That's the hope.
Speaker 2 (01:56:36):
Yeah, former, I thought somebody was talking to you. Who's
this person who's near you?
Speaker 5 (01:56:41):
Right now?
Speaker 8 (01:56:42):
Let's just people people in the background.
Speaker 4 (01:56:45):
Oh, it sounded like, uh, never mind.
Speaker 8 (01:56:47):
Uh okay, it's getting it's getting very busy.
Speaker 4 (01:56:50):
You said it was dying.
Speaker 8 (01:56:52):
Well it's picking up again. Okay, all right, cool Greg
greg Olsen has developed quite a following of people.
Speaker 2 (01:56:59):
All right, people, there is everybody offering him condolences. Does
he have like a tip jar out and to recruit
the seven million dollars he lost because of because of
Tom Brady.
Speaker 8 (01:57:10):
Brady's bad man. Like, I don't know how they're gonna
fix that.
Speaker 4 (01:57:13):
He's gonna get.
Speaker 8 (01:57:15):
Hall of Dudd broadcaster.
Speaker 2 (01:57:17):
All right, that's a little rude. By the way, I
saw something that made me laugh a couple of minutes ago.
Did you see Tim McMahon, who's been covering the Mavericks.
He was a Mavericks guy only, and then of course
ESPN had massive layoffs. He's been covering the entire NBA,
but based out of Dallas. He just tweeted out a
link to his book about the Dallas Mavericks and building
and rebuilding with Luka Doncic.
Speaker 8 (01:57:39):
Oh, that's spad timing.
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
I know he probably spent all these years here. Here,
here's Tim McMahon's tweet. My book The Wonder Boy, chronicling
all the drama and dysfunction as the MAVs scrambled to
build a contender around Luka Dancic is available for pre order.
Speaker 8 (01:57:56):
Oh it's not even out now.
Speaker 12 (01:57:58):
I know.
Speaker 4 (01:58:01):
He's spent all this time writing this book.
Speaker 8 (01:58:04):
And what sucks is it probably already went to print,
Like he's it's already out.
Speaker 2 (01:58:08):
Oh my god, you're right, it will be so so
apparently he's writing a new He's like scrambling to write a.
Speaker 4 (01:58:14):
New chapter, is what he's saying.
Speaker 8 (01:58:18):
Uh oh oh he said that.
Speaker 2 (01:58:20):
Yeah, he's writing a new chapter. And if you pre
order the book, you're gonna have to basically get it online.
Speaker 8 (01:58:26):
I guess wow. Oh yeah, he said last week's little
plot twist, I'm writing a final final chapter. Yeah. Well
that's good though, because then he can get Lakers fans
to buy it.
Speaker 4 (01:58:38):
Nobody's gonna buy this book.
Speaker 2 (01:58:41):
I feel bet Tim McMahon's a nice guy, at least
in my interactions with him. He does a great job
breaking news and has been covering the NBA beats for years.
Speaker 4 (01:58:48):
Yeah, this is bad luck. That's brutal. Oh my god,
that's really brutal. Oh my gosh. We should get him
on to try to talk about the book. He would
always come on. We can get him back in the
day when he was ESPN Dallas. That would be like
he is the unluckiest man in America.
Speaker 8 (01:59:10):
That would be like a twenty eighteen you and I
getting together and writing a book about James Harden the
Rocket Savior.
Speaker 1 (01:59:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:59:18):
Aw, he's face of this franchise, really taking things off
and now and then then they trade him.
Speaker 2 (01:59:24):
I mean, you get blindsided by this trade that What
do you think was going through Tim McMahon's mind when
he saw Sham's post this, Oh my god, please, this
can't be true.
Speaker 4 (01:59:34):
This can't be true. This can't be true.
Speaker 8 (01:59:38):
That's hilarious.
Speaker 2 (01:59:39):
Oh man, that is just that is all you talk
about all time, bad beats. I'm clicking out, who hatchet
book group? These poor people at hatchet book groups are
gonna have book like these things. They're just gonna ship
these the third world countries like they do with teams
that lose the championship.
Speaker 8 (01:59:57):
Like he has to have. He saw that, like he
gets that notification that that trade is happening, and like
all the blood just rushes to his face and he's like, no, no,
this can't be happening.
Speaker 2 (02:00:10):
Oh okay, Actually he put out a link from pre
orders in November, so this has been in the works.
Speaker 8 (02:00:14):
Oh yeah, no, if he if he's taking pre orders
in November and it's February and it's released in March.
Those books are all printed. Yeah, yeah, you're gonna have
to do a an online final chapter.
Speaker 5 (02:00:28):
Added.
Speaker 4 (02:00:29):
Oh man, this is bad. I don't even know what
to say.
Speaker 8 (02:00:37):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:00:37):
Luka Donch is the Laker and Tim mcmanon is gonna
have a lot of extra He's gonna be handing them
out like he might come to Radio row On next
year and hand you out a bunch of free books.
Speaker 4 (02:00:46):
He's gonna have to do something.
Speaker 8 (02:00:48):
And it's him. It's called the Wonder Boy and it's
him in a Dallas jersey.
Speaker 4 (02:00:53):
On the cover, Like, no, did you see the under
the like the what do they call it? The second title,
the secondary title or whatever? The Wonder Boy, Luca Doncheinton,
the Curse of Greatness.
Speaker 8 (02:01:03):
Oh well, it's a curse all right.
Speaker 4 (02:01:07):
They need to give fifty percent off on these pre
orders or something.
Speaker 8 (02:01:12):
My god, that's wrong. I'm trying to think of, Like, oh,
I know, what if we had written a book about
the next great Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is already
cementing his legacy in Houston.
Speaker 2 (02:01:25):
Yeah, that's pretty good. And then he just gets completely
traded away and he's gone.
Speaker 8 (02:01:33):
For a back of potato chips. Man, Oh, could he pivot?
Could he put Anthony Davis on the cover and making
that Wonder Boy? I don't think so, the WonderBoy, the Mavericks,
Anthony Davis.
Speaker 4 (02:01:47):
That's a shame. Poor Tim mcmon, nice guy.
Speaker 8 (02:01:52):
I was working on that Kyle Tucker book too.
Speaker 4 (02:01:54):
Yeah, you were about that, see, but that was smart.
Speaker 2 (02:01:57):
Look at least you would know if you're writing a
Kyle Tucker book, you know he's probably not staying here
long term. This is a complete blind side job. This
is completely out of nowhere. You figure Luca's about to
sign the Supermax. He's twenty five years old and you're
keeping him forever.
Speaker 8 (02:02:12):
Did you see? There was a lot of damage control
coming out to Dallas too, and like, oh, no, I
heard he's an alcoholic. He's I heard he's overweight.
Speaker 4 (02:02:20):
Yeh.
Speaker 8 (02:02:20):
Work ethics terrible.
Speaker 2 (02:02:21):
I mean, he's fat, he's three hundred pounds, he's got
an alcohol problem, he won't take he we got him
on ozempic and he's got.
Speaker 4 (02:02:29):
Zero work ethic. They're doing, Yeah, they're doing everything they can.
Speaker 8 (02:02:34):
I mean, I'm like, nobody out there would would listen
to that and still be like, oh you know, or
it would be like I don't want him, like everyone
would still take him.
Speaker 2 (02:02:41):
Yeah, at the end of the day, you still could
have gotten like ten first round picks for him.
Speaker 4 (02:02:45):
It makes no sense.
Speaker 8 (02:02:46):
That's the dumbest thing. I mean, like, that's collusion, man,
that's that was that reeks of we wanted massive superstar
in La Lakers.
Speaker 4 (02:02:57):
I can't believe this has got approved by anybody.
Speaker 2 (02:03:00):
I mean, Adam Silver's not gonna If this trade was
select the Utah Jazz, Adam Silver might go ahead and
like veto of.
Speaker 4 (02:03:05):
The trade, but it ain't happening.
Speaker 2 (02:03:07):
If it's going to the Los Angeles Lakers for Luca
Donchets in the next ten years, insane, all right?
Speaker 8 (02:03:15):
Or Tim McMahon, So one more time for Tim McMahon.
The book plug It is called The Wonder Boy with
Luka Doncicch on the cover in a Mavericks uniform about
all about how he's changing the tide of the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 4 (02:03:29):
Hmm.
Speaker 2 (02:03:31):
And if you order the book I currently are gonna
get access to the final chapter.
Speaker 4 (02:03:34):
All right, that's some horrible luck. I feel bad for
Tim all right, time for a quick break here.
Speaker 8 (02:03:38):
You're a Mavericks fan. You don't want to buy that? Like, no,
you to read about him leaving.
Speaker 4 (02:03:42):
That was what you're gonna do. You're gonna be able
to sell a thousands of the two thousand of these, however,
many books of these in Dallas and now they're not
gonna buy this crap. They're probably not gonna buy It's
all about the Mavericks, so they're not gonna buy it
in La hmm.
Speaker 2 (02:03:56):
Tough scenes for a good friend. Tim McMahon, all right,
for a break here on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Chris Gordy is out in New Orleans. I'm here in Houston.
Speaker 4 (02:04:06):
You want to get in, you can seven one three
two one two five seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (02:04:10):
Is the phone number. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. We've got some guests coming up in
the next hour with Gordy out at Radio Row in
New Orleans.
Speaker 1 (02:04:17):
Don't go anywhere, Yeah, lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 4 (02:04:25):
Our number four of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Here on Sports Talk seven ninety. Chris Gordy joining us
from New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (02:04:36):
Phone lines open it's seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven ninety Gordy is all being.
Speaker 4 (02:04:44):
Out at radio row. Is it getting you in the
mood for the Super Bowl coming up with the Kansas
City Chiefs taking on the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 8 (02:04:53):
Yeah, Man, I was gonna say, I'm so excited for
the game, and then I was gonna ask who's playing again? Yeah,
I mean I don't. I'm I'm in one cup. Feeling
the over exposure, if you will, of the Kansas City Chiefs.
I think a lot of people are wanting to go,
like a lot of people are wanting to root Eagles
because they're like, I'm done with the Chiefs. But then
(02:05:15):
part of me kind of wants the history of Mahomes
to get what would it be his fourth ring?
Speaker 4 (02:05:20):
It'd be his fourth ring, dude, in seven years as starter.
Speaker 8 (02:05:23):
The chasing Brady and all that. I just think it's
hilarious because I was at the Texas Ball whatever year
that was fourteen in Houston watching this dinky Texas Tech
quarterback Lsu just get after it. Leonard Fournette was the
headliner that day. He rushed for like two hundred yards
or something, and then LSU had built this monster lead.
(02:05:47):
Then they started giving up big chunk place of the
air because they're like, well, this game's in hand, and
then like Mahomes finished with like four hundred yards or something.
It was like it was the most underwhelming four hundred yards.
I just remember my thought after that game, going, yeah,
that's cute. I mean, we'll see if that guy gets
gets on a practice squad or something. And then on
Radio Row that year, we had Lee Steinberg and we
(02:06:08):
were scheduled with Lee and we had a couple of
his clients, and last minute they reach out, they go, hey,
would you be okay? Lee's gonna come on with his client,
Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes. We just figured, because it's Houston,
it's a Texas market, we'll put them on. And I
was like, yeah, I guess you know, we were hoping
to talk with Lee, but we'll put this Patrick Mahomes
(02:06:29):
kid onto sure, And so we had them all with
Gregor and d.
Speaker 4 (02:06:32):
Then he ground like that text day yeah, and he
was just and it was just.
Speaker 8 (02:06:37):
Funny because I have the pictures, Russ, there's nobody behind us,
Like there was no mob, there was no attention at
all and and fast forward whatever it's been eight years,
ten years, and now this guy's literally like a never
We never thought there would be anybody in our lifetime
give a run for their money at Tom Brady for
the greatest ever play. And I mean, if Mahome the
(02:07:00):
one's that on Sunday, he will absolutely be in the
driver's seat, barring catastrophic career into injury to do that.
Speaker 2 (02:07:08):
Yeah, it's crazy how he's pacing. That'll be interesting to see.
Andy Reid did say he's coming back next year. But
how much longer can Andy Reid coach? He's sixty seven
years old. He's the second oldest coach in football. He
was the oldest until the Raiders went out and hired
Pete Carroll's seventy three. So I wonder how much this
(02:07:28):
train can keep going and what the situation will be
when when they try to find a new coach. Generally
in the NFL, when you're looking for a new head coach,
it's because somebody's gotten fired and you're looking for like.
Speaker 4 (02:07:39):
The next up and coming guy. You're picking up.
Speaker 2 (02:07:40):
Scraps or whatever. You're like, we got to find somebody.
Whenever Andy Reid decides to retire and hang them up.
It will be after one of the greatest head coaching
careers in NFL history, and they'll be picking up the
pieces and with Pat Mahomes I imagine still in position
to be a contender.
Speaker 8 (02:07:57):
And isn't it wild how the how the narrative changed,
How it went from he like Andy Reid and Philly
was like the guy who just couldn't get over the hump. Yeah,
he had all those NFC Championship Game appearances with Eagles,
but they'd always lose and always come up short. But
now he's in Kansas City and he can't lose. Like
(02:08:19):
it's like they just keep getting the Super Bowl every year.
Speaker 2 (02:08:21):
We spent all this time talking about Andy Reiding like
clock management issues and he can't do this, and then
he snaked bit and then all of a sudden, you know,
it all matters. It's like for the people to say, oh,
is it tom Brady's at Belichick or it's all tom Brady,
or it's all you know. Nobody ever says it's all
Belichick anymore, because Tom Brady won one with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers.
Speaker 4 (02:08:38):
But that was a debate at one point in.
Speaker 2 (02:08:40):
Time, because but remember Belichick had the points in his
favor because with Tom Brady out, they went like eleven
and five with Matt Castle as the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:08:48):
So it takes a lot, It takes a lot of luck.
You got to win the games.
Speaker 2 (02:08:53):
You got to have a great defense, which the Kansas
City Chiefs have had the last couple of years as well,
because it hasn't been you know, Pat Mahomes getting all
the headlines. He had a mediocre season and they went
fifteen and one in games they actually tried to win.
A lot of has to be the backs of the defense.
And I think that is kind of one of the
underrated storylines, at least from the general public. People who
know and watch football know that this Chief defense is
(02:09:13):
legit and for real, and we know that here in Houston.
But if Pat Mahomes Travis Kelson getting all the headlines,
this Chief defense the last couple of years has really
been how they've been winning.
Speaker 7 (02:09:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (02:09:26):
I mean we saw that first an in just a
couple of weeks ago, Texans and Kansas City and it
just it sucks so bad ross because they cut that
drive out of the halftime right they come out that
Texans go right down the field, Joe Mixon touchdown, they
missed the pat Yeah, but you're right back in that game,
and the Chiefs defense just they could he couldn't move
(02:09:48):
the ball. And then then Strat just starts getting sacked, sacked, sacked.
It's miserable. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:09:55):
So super Bowl Fever maybe not taking over for a
lot of people, but we're closer and close, and I'm
with you. I think, to me, it's the way I
get most interested in. This is the history angle Kansas
to Kansas City, Chiefs win three straight.
Speaker 4 (02:10:09):
I know there is a lot of Chiefs fatigue.
Speaker 2 (02:10:11):
There is a lot of people who think that the
NFL is is rigging the games, which, by the way,
if you think they're rigging it for Kansas City, Missouri,
you're an idiot. And if you think Jerry Jones and
Cal McNair and the rest of the league is agreeing
to allow this league to be rigged so that Kansas
City can get all the.
Speaker 8 (02:10:29):
Super Bowls, you're an idiot. Exactly, it's gonna put it in.
I talked to somebody about that yesterday. They were asking
me about we they think the NFL's rigged, and all
I'm like, look, it's it's rigged from a standpoint of
stars get calls. But that's in every sport.
Speaker 4 (02:10:45):
Absolutely, Here's Tom.
Speaker 8 (02:10:46):
Brady was always well protected that if she even stiff
thought him, that was coming to personal foul. And so yeah,
when when he takes off a running and two Texans
defenders collide on top of him, they personal foul. That's
not cheating, that's just this is how it is. Lebron
gets calls in the NBA. It's just that's how it goes.
Speaker 2 (02:11:03):
Yeah, I mean pictures, great pictures, get greater, better strike zones, yep,
more disciplined.
Speaker 8 (02:11:09):
How many Verlander borderline strikes does he walk off the
mound and then empire goes right?
Speaker 2 (02:11:15):
Absolutely, Greg Maddox back in the day, Greg Maddickson is
like the sign of the size of a barn door,
his his strike zone. It's it's just the way that
it is. It's the way of the world, the Chiefs.
You want to get superstar calls, you gotta have some superstars.
Speaker 4 (02:11:29):
It happened.
Speaker 2 (02:11:30):
We complained here in Houston about all the calls that
everybody else got, and then when James Harden was here,
that dude was getting ten calls a night.
Speaker 8 (02:11:38):
Well, I'd love it. If Superstar left tackled Laramie Tunsick
could get some calls, that'd be great.
Speaker 4 (02:11:42):
Well, actually he does get away with some of the
some fall stars quite frankly, he does. There's sometimes he
should have had more than he had. He likes to
for what I mean, he likes to live on the
razor's edge as far as timing the snap count and
making sure he's off there right at the snapcount to
help him out with keep his I can pressure rate down,
which I'm sure he's acutely aware of. And sometimes he
(02:12:04):
jumps off sides and I think I have seen several
times this year where he he gets a little bit
borderline and doesn't get called.
Speaker 8 (02:12:13):
Yeah, well let's see, let's see if Stroud starts getting
some Superstar calls. Calls, Let's see if let's see if
some of our rockets can get some Superstar calls. I
want to see that.
Speaker 4 (02:12:24):
Yeah, that'd be nice. All we have a trade, uh
a rocket NBA trade?
Speaker 8 (02:12:30):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (02:12:31):
Is it a breaking new sound or worthy?
Speaker 5 (02:12:34):
No?
Speaker 8 (02:12:34):
Not at all? Oh, come on, man, it is it
is a former rocket being traded.
Speaker 1 (02:12:40):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (02:12:41):
Kenyon Martin Jr. I'm guessing I'm close.
Speaker 8 (02:12:47):
Go ahead, oh you know who just you know, he
just walked by me there. Who is the the Italian
agent guy?
Speaker 4 (02:12:54):
Oh, Tommy Devino's agent. Yes, what's he doing? He got rounds?
Didn't he get fired by timing to me?
Speaker 3 (02:13:05):
Not?
Speaker 8 (02:13:06):
I think? So he's making the rounds?
Speaker 9 (02:13:08):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (02:13:08):
No, the uh sean that's it?
Speaker 7 (02:13:11):
That's it?
Speaker 4 (02:13:13):
Is he wearing his signature hat?
Speaker 8 (02:13:15):
He is he a picture?
Speaker 10 (02:13:18):
The uh?
Speaker 8 (02:13:19):
The Pelicans Norman's Pelicans are trading center Daniel Tice the.
Speaker 4 (02:13:24):
Oklahoma City Thunder Rockets legend.
Speaker 8 (02:13:28):
So the thunder get even deeper?
Speaker 3 (02:13:30):
Is that?
Speaker 4 (02:13:30):
That's interesting? Is Isaiah Hartenstein know he's been hurt. They
think he's gonna be out for a while or something.
Speaker 8 (02:13:38):
Well, he's their starter, but Jalen isn't Jalen Williams.
Speaker 4 (02:13:41):
Yeah, yeah, I don't know if they've had some injury
issues or what. I'm not keeping track of the thunder
as much as maybe I should.
Speaker 8 (02:13:48):
Yeah, well they just got deeper. So good luck to them.
Speaker 4 (02:13:52):
And Daniel's heists not that great, that's fine. Rockets legend.
Speaker 8 (02:13:55):
No, but he's but he's like a decent guy off
the bad He's.
Speaker 2 (02:13:57):
A decent depth center. That's okay. So the Thunder is strong,
the Thunder winning the West. If you ask me, I
just don't see another team. Maybe maybe the Nuggets.
Speaker 8 (02:14:08):
Yeah, that's a that's this bold of a prediction as
guy yesterday that that Alex Bregman would signed with a team.
Speaker 2 (02:14:14):
Hey, come on, mine's a little bit more bold. Nuggets
could be plucky, and I just don't think the Rockets
are there yet. Grizzlies me, we'll see. Look at Donches Lakers.
Speaker 4 (02:14:26):
I'll be curious to see what they do in the
next couple of days because they need front court players.
Who's and there.
Speaker 8 (02:14:35):
There's the whole talk of would they trade for you know,
Kevin Durant. Yeah, well no, the Warriors gonna trade yeah,
Ad Durant or some superstar.
Speaker 4 (02:14:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:14:47):
I guess we'll see trade deadline tomorrow two pm. Here
on Sports Talk seven. All right, Chris Gordy is out
at New Orleans at Radio Row. We got a couple
of guests coming up this hour. My name is Ross
vi Ya. You don't want to miss those. I believe
it's Danny Warful we'll have on here and a Longhorn
legend coming up. Jalen Ford also currently in the currently
(02:15:09):
in the NFL. I forget why, off the top of
my head who Jalen Ford plays for? It is the
New Orleans Saints, that's right. Yeah, so he's in New
Orleans hanging out. We'll get Jalen Ford coming up here
as well. Out at Radio Row. Sports Talk seven idy
is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross, Matt Thomas.
Speaker 11 (02:15:27):
Ross Viial.
Speaker 12 (02:15:29):
It's the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (02:15:46):
Welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Ros
Virial with you.
Speaker 2 (02:15:54):
Matt Thomas is out. He is traveling with the Houston Rockets.
He'll be back tomorrow. They are heading to Man Soda
after last night's embarrassing loss. It was a choke, quite
frankly to the Brooklyn Nets ninety seven to ninety nine.
We are joined by Chris Gordy, who was out at
Radio Row in New Orleans. We got a couple of
(02:16:15):
guests coming up, Gordy, Is that correct? Heisman Trophy winner
Danny Werfel.
Speaker 8 (02:16:21):
Yeah, I always like talking ball with the wharf with
the Actually he was in Houston a few weeks ago
in a pickleball tournament.
Speaker 15 (02:16:30):
So I was a big picky Hey, apparently we'll find out.
Speaker 2 (02:16:34):
Pickleball's catching on like wildfire. You play much pickleball, Gordy.
Speaker 8 (02:16:39):
I have not, but I remember y'all. He used to
have a caller down at what Galvestonia I.
Speaker 4 (02:16:44):
Believe would call in. Yeah, pickleball is like it's enjoying
a renaissance.
Speaker 5 (02:16:50):
Fox the ball with.
Speaker 8 (02:16:51):
Wharful and then also still slay to have a jalen
Ford over Longhorn.
Speaker 5 (02:16:57):
Oh, I didn't realize.
Speaker 8 (02:16:58):
I looked back the playoff loss to Washington a year ago.
He had ten tackles in that game. He laid it
all out there, quin You weres didn't get it though.
Speaker 4 (02:17:06):
Wait, who had ten tackles in that game? Jalen Ford? Okay, Yeah,
good for him. Jalen Ford was good. How's he been
doing for your New Orleans Saints? He was okay, it
was a rookie, okay, learning the ropes.
Speaker 8 (02:17:22):
We'll have to find out if if you and he
had all the same mutual drinking spots in Austin.
Speaker 2 (02:17:28):
Oh, I'm gonna guess not. I say, because I was
there twenty years ago and most of them are gone.
Speaker 8 (02:17:35):
How does that make you? Does that make you feel
old college twenty years ago?
Speaker 5 (02:17:38):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (02:17:38):
It does make me feel old. And I was in
college twenty years ago, and I am old.
Speaker 8 (02:17:42):
When I saw Vince Young last week and his great
his beard was fully gray.
Speaker 4 (02:17:47):
Yeah, my beard's fully gray. I'm old dude, getting getting
along in the tooth, as they say.
Speaker 8 (02:17:54):
But v Y was an all star athlete.
Speaker 4 (02:17:56):
I mean that's true, and I wasn't. Uh I had
a clause was vbo I back in the day?
Speaker 8 (02:18:02):
Oh yeah? Did he go every day?
Speaker 4 (02:18:04):
What do you think? I will tell you I I
it was was one of those like fifty five minute Monday, Wednesday,
Friday classes.
Speaker 2 (02:18:13):
It was introduction to advertising. He would show him about
thirty thirty five minutes in.
Speaker 8 (02:18:19):
I had the same similar experience with a lot of
my guys at LSU. They would there were coaches who
would come around and check through the window for attendance
and early ducet former first round picks like a round
pick wide receiver. He he was not in class a
lot hm and he.
Speaker 4 (02:18:38):
Was even on test day. And then one time there
was when they were it was oh you week and they're.
Speaker 2 (02:18:42):
Going to play OU and the professor was like, uh,
I want to wish a good luck to the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:18:47):
This is this weekend in Dallas. I'm like, dude, he
ain't here, he wasn't in there. That was pretty funny.
Championship though.
Speaker 8 (02:18:56):
He get he gets a pass, right, I mean absolutely,
just give them straight out and do whatever he wants.
Speaker 4 (02:19:02):
Look, look, and we might going to delude myself to
think of that.
Speaker 2 (02:19:04):
Big time players at Texas Football are taking all their
classes and tests. Of course not. It's happening everywhere. It's
happening at LSU. You have aged got deemed for it,
didn't they didn't They get some kind of NCAA violation
for players taking their tests or something like that.
Speaker 8 (02:19:20):
You have hed it, Yes, I didn't hear that. I
remember North Carolina had that.
Speaker 2 (02:19:25):
Yeah, here we go twenty twenty in fractions report, one
year of probation, five thousand dollars.
Speaker 4 (02:19:34):
Fine, it was, Yeah, that was in twenty twenty.
Speaker 8 (02:19:40):
Back in the day. Everybody gets a pass for twenty.
Speaker 4 (02:19:44):
Twenty academic misconduct, that's what it was called.
Speaker 8 (02:19:50):
So I'm a who will have a bigger year this year?
Ross arch Manning at Texas or Connor Wegman at you of.
Speaker 2 (02:19:57):
H I'm gonna say arch Manning because he's the higher
pedigreed prospect but also, can I tell you I'm a
little bit worried, Like if if March Manning was just
all that, no doubt about it, can't can't be stop quarterback,
wouldn't Steve starkeising have put him in at some point?
Speaker 8 (02:20:17):
Well, Quinn Yours was supposed to be pretty damn good.
Speaker 5 (02:20:19):
So he was supposed to be but he was.
Speaker 2 (02:20:21):
He was good, nut great. That's how describe quinn Ewers, like,
maybe really good. He was good enough if everybody around
him was good enough to win, to win a national championship,
but you weren't gonna necessarily win because of quinn Ewers.
Now they won the Arizona State Game because of him,
but those moments felt a little bit too far and
(02:20:43):
few between.
Speaker 8 (02:20:47):
Well, well, lest Jalen Ford when he thinks of Quinn
Yours pro prospects.
Speaker 2 (02:20:50):
Oh, okay, say would you draft him? All, well, he's
gonna have to say something nice. He's not gonna he's
gonna be He's not gonna come on here and be
like nice.
Speaker 4 (02:20:57):
Sucks. I wouldn't take I wouldn't.
Speaker 8 (02:21:00):
We got Spencer Ratler, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:21:03):
They do have Spencer Ratler. He's not from New Orleans
just because he plays for the Saints. It's from Frisco, Texas.
Jalen Ford.
Speaker 8 (02:21:11):
Yeah, it's Texas thir and third two lone star high
school right.
Speaker 2 (02:21:14):
Two time all first Big Twelve, All Team first Big Twelve.
Speaker 8 (02:21:19):
You know who would have been able to tell you
that right off the back? Craig Way.
Speaker 4 (02:21:21):
Oh yeah, of course, right, yeah, yeah, absolutely, they went.
They reached the semifinals in twenty nineteen, they actually won
it all into it. Yeah, he would know everything. He
knows the mascot. He knows, he knows it all.
Speaker 8 (02:21:33):
It's really impressive to see him do that in person.
Speaker 5 (02:21:35):
Yeah, didn't you.
Speaker 4 (02:21:36):
Weren't you trying to?
Speaker 2 (02:21:37):
Did you put him like a pop quiz hot shot
and you were asking him a bunch of mascots from.
Speaker 4 (02:21:41):
Random's high schools.
Speaker 8 (02:21:43):
Yeah, and he knew them all.
Speaker 2 (02:21:45):
Yeah, he is an encyclopedia of Texas high school sports.
Speaker 8 (02:21:50):
He's like looking down at Laporte like he knows everything.
Speaker 4 (02:21:53):
Well, he knows them all. It's insane. He still calls
he still calls high school game, doesn't he Yep?
Speaker 8 (02:22:00):
And women's basketball games, Ben's basketball game.
Speaker 2 (02:22:02):
He's dedicated to the game. Craig Way legendary and then
the iconic championship call. All the hopes, all the dreams
of the national Championship come down to this play.
Speaker 8 (02:22:13):
Yeah, I know that call because Texas has not had
a great moment in football since then.
Speaker 2 (02:22:19):
So what are you talking about? Sugar Bowl two thousand
and sixteen ish or whatever that was? Sam Ellinger will
be back?
Speaker 8 (02:22:27):
Oh god, yeah, the great Tom Herman. We're back.
Speaker 2 (02:22:32):
Yeah, and then they weren't back. We canna ask Jalen
Ford about that. He was there under Tom Herman, won't
he or was his first year? Sarks first year?
Speaker 4 (02:22:42):
Yeah? Sarks started there in twenty one, Yeah, he did
get he got one year under Tom Herman.
Speaker 8 (02:22:47):
There we go. That'd be a question, but he can
ask if he urinated yellow.
Speaker 4 (02:22:54):
If he was keeping proper hydration levels. What you're saying, yeah, okay, yeah,
we'll get those questions in. More are in with Jalen
Ford as we go along here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
We do have Danny Werfol coming up. He is a
Heisman Trophy winner. That'll be a good guest.
Speaker 2 (02:23:09):
Chris Cordy is out with us at New Orleans at
the Radio Row, and then Jalen Ford coming up later
on as well.
Speaker 4 (02:23:16):
So do not go anywhere.
Speaker 2 (02:23:17):
We're gonna take a little bit of an early break
to make sure we get Danny Warfol on time. Here
on Sports Talk seven ninety, it is the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross, and we'll be back with Danny Warfol
from Radio Row.
Speaker 1 (02:23:28):
Lunchtimers, lunch timers, It's the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (02:23:47):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (02:23:50):
To the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Here on Sports
Talk seven ninety, Rosby Raal with you. Chris Gordon's gonna
be joined by a couple of guests here. He is
down at Radio Row in New or Orleans. You staying
with family? What are you doing out there, Gordia. I
know the hotel. Room's got to be expensive.
Speaker 8 (02:24:05):
Friends, Oh, no, hotel. Yeah that's nice.
Speaker 4 (02:24:08):
I'm proud of you.
Speaker 8 (02:24:09):
Yeah, go go go look up the price of a
New Orleans hotel tonight. Let me know what you find.
Speaker 4 (02:24:13):
Actually, I'm gonna go do that right now. I'm just curious.
Speaker 8 (02:24:15):
It's it's I think you get one for seven eight
hundred tonight. It's not awful, but the next few nights,
like go look for Friday night. Yeah, you're looking about
fourteen hundred a night dollars. Oh yeah, this Sunday night.
You want to know, you want a hotel room Sunday
night in New Orleans, the night of the super Bowl. Yeah,
three to four grand for the Hilton.
Speaker 4 (02:24:35):
Oh my god.
Speaker 8 (02:24:37):
And that's the three star Hilton. That's not even the.
Speaker 2 (02:24:39):
That's not a nice one. Yeah, all right, I'm going
I'm looking right now on mice mind, let's see a
aaity time.
Speaker 4 (02:24:48):
I'll get the Trident in for forty four hundred.
Speaker 8 (02:24:52):
Yeah, if you're into bed bugs and stuff like that.
Speaker 4 (02:24:55):
Oh, India house hostels on here. I've actually stayed there
before for the jazz Fest. It's not that bad. God
the hostels, but never oh my god.
Speaker 2 (02:25:03):
Bourbon Orleans Hotel is twenty five hundred, Motel six is
five hundred, no, thank you.
Speaker 8 (02:25:10):
Look up like the Royal Sinesta on Bourbon's what's.
Speaker 4 (02:25:13):
That run in Best Western is thirty five hundred. Wow,
The Holiday and Express is thirty five hundred. Royal Sinessa's
four thousand. Wow. Yeah, wow, that sounds that's insane. Has
(02:25:34):
have you been making Have you had a chance to
kind of just knock around about town?
Speaker 2 (02:25:37):
You're gonna do that tonight? Or are you gonna be
with You're gonna be with Adam and Adams till six.
Are you bringing them INNY guests?
Speaker 8 (02:25:42):
Well, that's what I'm gonna hang out and work on
trying to get them. So I know that they've got
a couple of guests from the athletics schedule to come
on to talk to talk rams and stuff or so, Yeah,
and I think we're actually gonna get our buddy, Danny
Worfel's Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:25:57):
Great Danny Werfel here on the Mann Tom Show with
Ross with Chris Gordy down in New Orleans.
Speaker 7 (02:26:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (02:26:05):
It always fun to talk with this guy because when
we had him on at SEC Media Days. We see
him all the time and he does such great work
and it's cool that he gets to do it right
here in New Orleans and he joins us right now.
He is the one and only Danny Worfel. Welcome in man,
Harry Man.
Speaker 5 (02:26:20):
Thanks thanks for having me.
Speaker 8 (02:26:21):
It's uh, it's great to see you because I know
you man, this is the city you got drafted in.
You you played for the Saints, you started, uh, you know,
all the great work with Desire Street here and kind
of cool to having New Orleans the super Bowl right
here in New Orleans.
Speaker 5 (02:26:32):
Yeah, this city has a lot of memories for me.
Speaker 18 (02:26:35):
It's a great city to host a party because I
mean they'll they'll host a party no matter what's going on.
Speaker 15 (02:26:39):
So if you actually have something like a Super Bowl,
it's quite a party. Yeah, it's uh, it's it's fun
to have you on. We're running through all your accolades.
I mean obviously National champion, Heisman Trophy, winning all this.
But the thing when I saw you were in Houston
a few weeks ago playing pickle ball, how are how
how good are you at pickle ball?
Speaker 6 (02:26:57):
Well?
Speaker 5 (02:26:57):
Uh, pickleball is kind of on the professor side is
a little bit like golf. You've got professional.
Speaker 18 (02:27:02):
Pickleball players which are like the best in the world,
and then there's a senior pro league.
Speaker 5 (02:27:07):
When you hit fifty, okay, so still pretty good, but
not that good.
Speaker 18 (02:27:11):
So I just turned fifty and I played a year
on the senior pro level, had a really good season,
and just really really love it. It's a fantastic sport.
Anyone can play it, and it's just it's it's been
a great blessing for my life.
Speaker 8 (02:27:23):
You say you just turned fifty, not to say you're old.
But when you say that makes us all feel old
because we remember watching you play, and now we all
feel old when we hear that. So it's always funny
to hear that kind of stuff. Talk a little bit
about this week and just everything going on right now.
I mean, it's obviously a big football game with having
the Super Bowl, but you as a former quarterback, you
(02:27:45):
see a guy like Patrick Mahomes, I mean literally a
chance to submit even more legacy if he wins a
fourth Super Bowl, right.
Speaker 18 (02:27:50):
Yeah, this is pretty unheard of, you know, and if
you just back up one step, two seven AFC Championships
games in a row is yeah, unbelievable. And then a
chance to repeat what he's done at such a young
time of his career.
Speaker 3 (02:28:06):
You know.
Speaker 18 (02:28:07):
I mean, certainly no one other than Tom Brady's in
that same category of of of what they've done. You know,
I think it's gonna be a fantastic game. The Eagles
are an outstanding football team and really hard to beat,
but golly man and those key moments at the end
of the game, Patrick Mahomes seems to.
Speaker 5 (02:28:23):
Always be able to make some kind of magic happen.
Speaker 8 (02:28:26):
Yeah, it's it's amazing too, And it's it gets to
the point where they're like, people are asking, oh, there
is the lead cheating for the for them, the refs cheating,
and it's like, no, man, sometimes you're just that good.
Speaker 5 (02:28:38):
Right, yeah, yeah, no kidding. It's it's funny. I think, Uh,
everybody loves loves the underdog until.
Speaker 18 (02:28:44):
They become the champion, and then then it's kind of
like you kind of paid on the people that keep winning, right,
So you know, there's been a few calls that go
weird ways, but that happens all the time.
Speaker 5 (02:28:54):
You pay more attention to him usually in these situations.
Speaker 8 (02:28:57):
It's funny. And you had a little bit of that
too at Florida when when you're good, when you when
you get good, people like, oh, what a great story.
And then you start winning too much and then you
become the villain all of a sudden, people like, oh,
they win too much?
Speaker 5 (02:29:08):
Yeah, is that gonna happen?
Speaker 8 (02:29:09):
Is that kind of what happened? Take me back to
your Florida days. Was that a little was there a
little bit of flavor that because spurry are always he
would say stuff he knew, he would say stuff the round.
Speaker 18 (02:29:16):
He didn't even have to be winning, yet to be
able to say the things that got people.
Speaker 5 (02:29:22):
In fact, this was crazy for me.
Speaker 18 (02:29:24):
So, you know, I'd known him since nineteen ninety two,
and years ago I was at someone old Gator fans
house who had a book of quotes from Spurrier from
before that up until like nineteen ninety one. So this
is like before i'd even knew him, and the amount
of stuff that he had said prior to that is crazy.
Speaker 5 (02:29:43):
He knew how to knife folks pretty good.
Speaker 8 (02:29:46):
That's that's that's it. Yeah, I mean he was always
one of the great What was the uh you can't
have citrus without ut? That was always that was always
the good one. Yeah. Yeah, it's interesting too when it
comes to the Florida Gators. We have a local kid
from the Houston area, Willis DJ Lagway, who went to
Florida last year, played a little bit as a true
freshman in the back end, and suddenly Floria starts to
(02:30:06):
go on this wind streak. What did you see out
of that kid? And what's the future look like with him?
At that home?
Speaker 5 (02:30:11):
Yeah, you said Willis right? Yeah, Yeah, we're big Willis fans.
Speaker 18 (02:30:14):
Now, all of a sudden, I tell you what He
is a very amazing young man, an incredible player. What
he has meant this year, I mean he didn't even
play that much and has created like Hope, Hope that's
drawn recruits from all over the country. We went from
like the fiftieth probably a rated recruiting class. I think
(02:30:34):
now we're like six or seventh in a large part
to the success at the end of the year, in
a large part due to DJ.
Speaker 5 (02:30:40):
Lagway had breakfast with him a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 18 (02:30:43):
Humble kid does a lot for charities, just wants to
be a good leader, wants to be the best that
he can be. Great family, really have a lot of
respect for his folks, and I'm just really grateful he's
at the University of Florida.
Speaker 8 (02:30:56):
And it's tough to this day and age because there's
kids look nils a thing and there's some kids they
let it get to their head, and yes, go get
your money and do all that, but you also still
have to kind of be that humble leader too, and
you got it's got to be a fine balance. And
it seems like DJ. Look, he's he's getting take care
of on the NL front, but also on the other side,
he seems to be that humble leader that does all
the things that leaders need to do.
Speaker 18 (02:31:17):
I mean, I think he's a very unusual to have
all that together and to have it at such a
young age, and he's got an old soul in him
and just a really unique and amazing young man.
Speaker 8 (02:31:28):
We're talking with Danny Wirfold. I'm curious your thoughts. Texas
in the SEC now is weird enough, But when Arch
Manning is getting ready to take over the home at Texas,
did you ever think you would see a Manning again,
you know, in the SEC, but you know, not at
Texas or Old Miss but or not Old Miss or Tennessee,
but at Texas.
Speaker 18 (02:31:48):
I saw a picture online the other day of I
think that son throwing the ball.
Speaker 7 (02:31:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 18 (02:31:52):
I don't know how old he is, but I'm like,
you know, we may not ever see the end of
the Mannings, that that line goes on forever. But I
remember this Night Live skirt where they said the only
disappointment was his mom didn't play very long in Canada.
Speaker 5 (02:32:04):
But everybody else with stars.
Speaker 8 (02:32:06):
Yeah, it's it's too funny. Yeah it's it's crazy, and
look what do you make of it? Though? Like a
kid with all that hype and everything like that. Does
he live up to the hype? There's a lot of
pressure on these kids to try to live up to that.
Speaker 18 (02:32:18):
Yeah, I would say so, I'd say wisdom. I think
a lot of this came from the family, though. Is
you look that he has been there for a couple
of years to learn and grow and develop and as
a quarterback, that's so key. It's so hard, so hard
to go intos a freshman or as a rookie and
have success. There's so many more stories of guys that
struggled those early years and then then you start questioning
yourself and your confidence and people get down on you.
(02:32:41):
So I think he's in the absolute perfect scenario for him. Yes,
the expectations are high, but they've got a great team,
a great coach, great system, and he's ready.
Speaker 8 (02:32:51):
Yeah, it seems like Steve sarkiz and doing something right
there now, two deep playoff runs two years in a row.
We'll see what they do this year. Talking with you
or we'll talk a little bit about what you're here
for this week, huddle for health. I know, great, you know,
great place to be pushing this week while you're.
Speaker 5 (02:33:08):
In the Orleans.
Speaker 18 (02:33:09):
Yeah, So my foundation in the Warflew Foundation, we exist
to inspire service, unity, and health in the world, and
so we're trying to leverage football big moments to kind
of drive things towards making positive change. And so one
of the new partners that I've been working with is
called is Nation. I Nation is an app. It's a platform.
You can actually download it right off the iOS stor
(02:33:30):
it's just a it's an app, but think of it
like not like an Instagram or a TikTok or something.
This is like the app where you want your kids
to go because it's about sports, it's about relationship, it's
about positivity. You can get coaching, you can get all
sorts of great stuff. And the Huddle for Health is
a program kind of coming out of the NFL Alumni
Health where they're trying to create more education and services
(02:33:51):
around health in the world. So they're going to be
putting a lot of their content on the is Nation app,
which we really kind of deliver that to a broad audience.
Speaker 5 (02:34:00):
So this is some pretty cool stuff.
Speaker 18 (02:34:02):
I think it's it's being creative around technology, uh, using sports, using.
Speaker 5 (02:34:06):
Relationships to make a difference.
Speaker 18 (02:34:08):
So, yeah, if you have kids, or even if you
don't check out is Nation, you just download it, uh,
and then you can look for the huddle for health
support in there.
Speaker 5 (02:34:17):
But there's lots of other great stuff too.
Speaker 8 (02:34:19):
Yeah, and you still, yeah, I assume you still got
everything going with Desire Street and all the local stuff
you do here.
Speaker 18 (02:34:24):
Yep, Desire Street actually now is working in neighborhoods all
over the country. And yeah, the the original stuff here
in the ninth ward was rebuilt. There's a community center,
early childhood center, a medical clinic that we rebuilt and
it's now all being run by local, local folks here
that are part of the community. So that kind of
frees us to help grow things like that around the country.
Speaker 8 (02:34:45):
Very cool. And then you got the what the Werfule
Award you're giving out every year now too, it's becoming
it's getting state every year.
Speaker 18 (02:34:52):
Gave the Werfel Trophy College Football Award for community service
Nick Dawkins, the Center for Penn State one. This year
we had our twentieth anniversary and just amazing to honor
athletes not for tackles or touchdowns or yards, but for
helping other people.
Speaker 5 (02:35:08):
And really proud of that award. The Waffle Trophy, I.
Speaker 8 (02:35:10):
Can't think of two guys who represent like two former
Florida Gators that do more to help the world than
you and Tim Tebow together, like it's you're you're you're blessed.
If one school has one a guy like you, but
they have two, it's incredible. Tim's always I mean he
that guy's like out there.
Speaker 5 (02:35:25):
Doing everything all right now. Man, He's everywhere. It's amazing.
He's done great stuff.
Speaker 8 (02:35:28):
Before we let you run, Danny Warfold, give me a
quick thought. You you've lived here, what's what's the best
restaurant in New Orleans?
Speaker 5 (02:35:34):
Give me the go to? Oh? Well, see, I mean
some of.
Speaker 18 (02:35:37):
The upper more scales, Commander's Palace, you know, Brennan's Like,
there's some of those higher names that are fantastic. But
I mean, like I like Deni's yeah, uh, and and
so is what was one Jacomo's was was one that
was I think it got impacted by the storm. So
I'm not sure where they are right now, but yeah,
(02:35:58):
those we feel that come to mind.
Speaker 8 (02:35:59):
There you go. That is the recommendations there for Danny Wervel.
Danny always good to talk with you, man, Thanks so much,
and uh continued successful all the great.
Speaker 5 (02:36:06):
Works favery health, take care, all right, We'll be right.
Speaker 8 (02:36:07):
Back right after this here on Sports Talks of tonight,
Matt Thomas.
Speaker 4 (02:36:11):
We'd like to thank his parents for only giving him
two first.
Speaker 1 (02:36:15):
Names, because who would listen to Billy Ray Thomas talk
about Houston sports The.
Speaker 11 (02:36:20):
Matt Thomas Show on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 8 (02:36:27):
We're along here from Radio Row in New Orleans, and
it's always fun to uh catch up with current players.
This is a guy who's currently with the New Orleans Saints.
He has a big boot on his legs, so he's
coming back from injury. But a guy that is from
right down the road over in Texas from Border Rays, Frisco,
Texas played for the Texas Longhorns. He is linebacker Jalen
(02:36:49):
fordsitting downas Jaye. Welcome in, man, appreciate your paron. I
see you have the you have the boot, and you're
on a scooter. How how far along we are we
in the uh in the rehab cycle?
Speaker 16 (02:36:59):
About I got surgery, uh like at the beginning of January,
so about a month over and you know, just you know,
every day making my way to rehab, just trying to
get better. I think the Saints have done a good job.
Helped me be confident and you know, understanding the process
(02:37:19):
and you know the steps were going to take, you know,
to get to.
Speaker 5 (02:37:23):
Be fully recovered.
Speaker 16 (02:37:24):
So I have a lot of confidence and you know,
one hundred percent certainty that you know, I'll be back
writing time for the season.
Speaker 8 (02:37:31):
What was the rookie season like with your head spinning
first year in the NFL.
Speaker 16 (02:37:36):
A little bit at the beginning, I will say, I
think it was just the It was really just you know,
trying to find a way to learn that playbook. That
was probably the hardest thing for me, just trying to
pick up the playbook, and because I wanted to be
I wanted to.
Speaker 5 (02:37:51):
Feel like how I felt, you know, as comfortable as
it was at Texas.
Speaker 16 (02:37:53):
And yeah, obviously that takes time, and I just you know,
tend to just be harder myself sometimes. But I think
all in all, I did a good job of developing
and you know, taking coaching, and over time, you know,
I ended up you know, finding the comfortability with the
playbook and stuff like that. So it was a pretty
good rookie year. Kind of to understand from my vets,
learn from them, and just you know, take in all
(02:38:15):
the experience.
Speaker 8 (02:38:16):
So take me back to your Longhorn days. I believe
you were recruited by Tom Herman, right, yeah, Tom Herman,
commit to Tom. You played for him for a year. Yeah,
and then here comes Sark. What was what was that
all like? Playing for Tom Herman and then playing so
I got it.
Speaker 16 (02:38:32):
Was a crazy My first year was crazy because of
COVID and so you know, like you gotta put an
asterisk over that cause it's just the whole COVID thing
kind of it.
Speaker 5 (02:38:42):
It made things.
Speaker 16 (02:38:45):
Like I didn't really know how to, you know, take
in everything because the things I was experiencing was the
I was experiencing for the first time.
Speaker 5 (02:38:53):
Along with guys that have been there three four years.
Speaker 16 (02:38:55):
So it was it was a little different, and I
didn't really there weren't really guys there to kind of
tell you what to expect or what to you know,
because it was like this is all new to everybody.
Speaker 5 (02:39:04):
You know.
Speaker 16 (02:39:04):
We were out there practicing with masks on and it
was a whole crazy ordeal. But we still were out
there playing games obviously.
Speaker 8 (02:39:12):
And so how was your hydration level for Tom Herman?
Were you okay?
Speaker 5 (02:39:15):
Oh yeah, I was. Yeah, I didn't really have to
worry about that.
Speaker 16 (02:39:20):
But I think, yeah, like and that was, yeah, that
was my first time being opened up to like hydration
tests and all those things. But I think I did
pretty good transitioning from high school to college.
Speaker 6 (02:39:30):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (02:39:31):
You know, I had made a good name for myself
being a freshman.
Speaker 16 (02:39:34):
And I got on special teams and you know, I
had an opportunity to get on the field a couple
of times.
Speaker 5 (02:39:38):
So my freshman year was good.
Speaker 16 (02:39:40):
And then you know, you know, I wake up one
morning and I look at ESPN and it's Tom Herman
has been fire. Yeah, you know, and then start comes
in and I had no I had no idea about Sark.
Speaker 5 (02:39:51):
I didn't know where he was from.
Speaker 16 (02:39:52):
I you know, obviously he had a great he had
a great coaching resume, but I just didn't know what
my myself. But you know, fast forward now, like you know, uh,
Sark has helped me and helped a lot of guys
make a lot of money and has helped them develop
and and obviously he we we've helped him. You know,
(02:40:13):
he came in and told us what he wanted, you know,
except for a standard, and we helped him do it.
And you look at him now and it's like, you know,
back to back CFP appearances. So you know, I think
he's been doing a great job.
Speaker 8 (02:40:24):
And it's crazy, you guys, I think it was five
and seven one year one and then year one was okay,
that was you I will say.
Speaker 16 (02:40:33):
The best thing that ever happened was going five and
seven because the motivation that we had it led a
fire under it so big that you know, I think
everything that's happening now, it all started back then when
we had that year, just because of you know, everything
we experienced that year. Uh it it takes a lot
to overcome some adversity like that. And uh, you know,
(02:40:55):
like I was saying to you, new faces. He brought
in new people. You know, he had to you know,
get rid of some bad apple, and he brought in
guys that he thought would help buy in and you
know the guys that were already there. He was like,
he came to us like I need you buy in.
You know, helped set this new standard. We listened and
everything else was you know history.
Speaker 8 (02:41:13):
Talking with former Longhorn linebacker and occurred Saint linebacker Jalen Ford,
Uh is it I was looking back through your games,
I forgot you had ten tackles in that playoff game
against Washington.
Speaker 5 (02:41:23):
I mean yeah, talk about.
Speaker 8 (02:41:24):
Leaving it out, all out of the field. You left
it all out of the field and tried. Yeah, they
came so close, Quinn Quinn in the offense, they got
the ball, They're marching down. I'm like, oh, they're gonna
do this. Yeah, it just walked in the cards.
Speaker 16 (02:41:35):
Yeah, it was tough, you know, being that close doing
something that Texas hadn't done in a long time. But
just that whole journey, the whole process, not only for me,
but I know for a lot of guys that were
there with me. Some of them are you know, got
drafted with me last year. Was in your class, No
Overshan was year before, yeah, year before. But you know
(02:41:55):
even them Rouseeawan, Bijon, you know over Sean, you know
all them guys.
Speaker 4 (02:41:59):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (02:42:00):
But it's just been so many guys that I've seen,
you know, finally make it to the NFL. And we
were all part of that group, like, man, we're gonna
change this, We're gonna do it. And uh, I think
we can say that we helped, you know, get the
ball rolling on what what sark has you know, finally
start to build at Texas.
Speaker 8 (02:42:14):
Give me, okay, give me a scattered report on Quinn yours.
How do how he officially in the draft? Now, what's uh?
What what's he bringing to the league?
Speaker 4 (02:42:23):
You know, I like Quinn.
Speaker 16 (02:42:24):
Uh, Quinn has a he has a bit of swagger
and confidence that you know, at the quarterback position, you're
gonna get a lot of scrutiny. Uh, people gonna have
things to say about you all the time, regardless of
how you do. And I think he does a good
job of not letting it get to him and just
gonna go out there and play his game. He's young,
and he's got a lot of you know, he's got
a lot of promise. So I think for him, he's
just gotta he's got to learn, you know, learn from
(02:42:48):
the guys that that are in his room, that have
you know, been in the league, and then just continue
to grow. And I think he's gonna be a great quarterback.
Speaker 8 (02:42:55):
I was just looking at all the guys, I mean,
there was so many Longhorns draft eligible leaving. I mean,
like going pro. It's it's the list, is I mean, yeah,
you guys like Matthew Golden who just came in for
a year and all that. But like Jake Major dude,
who have been around a while, it's it's a lot
of long ports going in this.
Speaker 16 (02:43:10):
Draft, and that's what I'm saying. And it's like, you know,
we went from I think that year we went five
and seven. I don't think we had one guy drafted,
and then you fast forward to this year and we
might you know, we could possibly set a record or
you know, set a record for Texas for sure, And
so I think just seeing like all that is that
just shows kind of like the work that everybody's been
(02:43:30):
putting in since start got there, really and now it's
starting to pay off and you're starting to see the
guys that that started with them, you know, starting to
reap you know, the wars, the benefits of the you know,
the hard work.
Speaker 8 (02:43:41):
You're are you all aboard the SEC hype trade and
you played in the last three twelve game. Yeah.
Speaker 16 (02:43:46):
I remember people asking me like, how you think Text's
going to do? Then SEC and they surpassed my expectations
this year. So I mean, you know, they were a
game short of winning the NA Set Championship their first year,
but nonetheless, you know, they went out there and they
definite he made a name for themselves.
Speaker 5 (02:44:01):
And you know, the biggest thing.
Speaker 16 (02:44:02):
That when I was at Texas was you know, respect,
Like a lot of teams didn't really respect us because
of you know, the past. And I think, you know,
these past couple of years, I think Texas done them
more than enough to you know, show that their team
that should be respected when they get there.
Speaker 8 (02:44:19):
At least you guys still get to play those wretched
Sooners up the road.
Speaker 16 (02:44:22):
It can't can't take that Red River game away, because man,
that game is a special you know, being part of it,
you know how special it is. And I'm just glad
I get to see new guys, you know, make a
name for themselves in that game.
Speaker 8 (02:44:34):
Yeah, talking with the Texas Longhorn former Texas Longhorn linebacker
Jalen Ford down with the New Orleans Saints. It's here
in New Orleans. Kind of cool.
Speaker 16 (02:44:42):
You do enough to go far right, Yeah, It's been
a cool experience to kind of you know, be here
and be a New Orleans Saint and have you know
a surplus amount of opportunities to to you know, be
involved with the Super Bowl or you know, do do
media or kind of you know, hosting or you know,
do community service, all those types of things that the
(02:45:05):
Super Bowl kind of just magnified it. And this has
been pretty cool, uh, pretty cool experience and opportunities.
Speaker 8 (02:45:12):
Are you re expecting you guys gonna get a head
coach this week? Is that the hope or that's the hope? Right?
Speaker 16 (02:45:17):
I mean, the game, the game is, The game is Sunday.
Hopefully you know, by the end of by the end
of the next week at least.
Speaker 8 (02:45:24):
Might be a guy coaching in that game. We'll see, Yeah,
we'll see, We'll see what happens. But that's certainly gonna
be a fun to see. And uh man, what a
crazy year two for you guy. I mean that that
to and oh start you'll beat what was it, the
beat the panta it's not of the Cowboys, and everybody's
like this New Orleans this year, and then everything just
(02:45:45):
started to unwind. I guess yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:45:46):
I think injuries, Yeah, injuries were a major part.
Speaker 16 (02:45:50):
But you know in the NFL, you know they always
say any given Sunday, So uh, I think it's just
a lesson learned. Like you know, uh, you got if
you're gonna start strong, you gotta finish strong. You know,
it's a lot of games to be played in the NFL.
A lot of things can happen, and so I think
for us just got to learn from it and move on.
Speaker 8 (02:46:10):
What's is it tough staying away from all the dangerous
food here?
Speaker 16 (02:46:13):
Stayed in drum? You know, Luckily I work out a lot.
I haven't been able to work out with this boots,
so I have had to watch myself. But I luckily
I've never been a guy that you know, food doesn't
stick on to me. So you know, I had the
luxury of being able to eat pretty much a lot
of a lot of things in New Orleans. The food
is amazing out here, so what they do say about
(02:46:35):
the food is true. Uh, And it's been great to
kind of go around and find new spots and try
new things. Which food do you miss most living in Texas?
Food I missed most living in Texas. I probably say
the barbecue. Barbecue isn't bad here, but you know, Texas
is just a little different out there.
Speaker 4 (02:46:55):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (02:46:56):
But I mean being out here for about a year now,
I think I'm just uh switching over to seafood, you know,
and enjoying the seafood and and and apasta and everything else.
Speaker 8 (02:47:08):
They got to offer out here all right? Last week
for you talker, Jalen Ford, Uh, are you all aboard
the arch Manic hype train? Absolutely?
Speaker 16 (02:47:16):
Arch is what you've seen arts do in those games
that he played. He was doing that in practice his
freshman year. So you know, I'm always been like, man,
he's gonna be special. Obviously, he's gonna have some growing pains.
You know, he hasn't started, Uh, he hasn't played and
started a whole season and you know in in a
couple of years, so you know, there will be some
growing pains. Being a quarterback at Texas is gonna be
(02:47:39):
some adversity. But I think he has a great foundation
around him, you know, with his family, with his with
his dad, and then he has a great foundation at
the school to where you know, I think he's gonna
have guys that will make players and help him out.
And you know when those when that adversity does hit,
I think he'll do a great job of overcoming it.
Speaker 5 (02:47:57):
So I'm excited to see what he'll do.
Speaker 8 (02:48:00):
But he is Jaalen Ford Saints linebacker former Texas Longhorn.
Give me a hook him on the way out, hook
him here we go. We gotta hook him, all right,
the roussill throw it back to you in our Houston studios.
Speaker 4 (02:48:09):
All right, thank you, good stuff there with Jalen Ford,
Chris Gordy out at Radio Row. My name is ros.
Speaker 2 (02:48:16):
Virial saying thanks to all of you for listening to
the show, Thanks for all our great guest thanks to
Chris Gordy, thanks to Conne mcgoven.
Speaker 4 (02:48:23):
