Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Ten o one in h Town. Good morning, and welcome
to a Thursday edition of The Matt Thomas Show and Ross.
This is Sports Talk seven ninety. Do you understand, Houston,
(00:29):
what levels we've had to go to? We're playing Taylor.
We're playing Taylor on The Matt Thomas Show and Ross
without Ross. Now, in fairness, I don't have the hate
(00:52):
for Taylor that others do. I have two women in
my life, two of the most important women in my life,
my daughter and my wife, who are huge Swifties, I
mean huge. They have seen her in Arlington, they have
seen her in New Orleans, and they have seen her
in Houston. My philosophy is I would have been able
(01:12):
to retire comfortably or retire on my terms, if not
for the amount of money that I've spent on three
Taylor Swift concerts in the last seven eight years. But
I digress. But I always try to figure out some
sort of song that fits the mood of the local nine.
(01:34):
And they can be for the Rockets, they'll be for
the Texans when their seasons are playing, obviously, but I
couldn't think of any other song to go with then
shake it off because you have to shake it off
because you're playing tonight against the Baltimore Orioles. Gotta take
it off. Man, you gotta shake it off, Jonathan, you
(01:56):
gotta shake off a four touchdown beat down coming up
a week from Thursday. I'll still take it off, though,
I know you will, cause you're resilient. I'm proud of you,
said the Astros that have to shake it off. As
Robert Ford said, at least he scored, and there's that gang.
(02:17):
I would ask you how you're feeling, but I kind
of know, yesh. And look, I don't want to ever
say goodbye to a player, especially when that player is good.
But bro, it's time from her. It's been real, this
(02:39):
August meltdown of his, And there really is no other
way to say it. It's a flat out meltdown. How
do you go from one quality start after the other,
filthy curveball, high strike down count low eer, you know,
(03:01):
barely getting to you know, going seven eight innings, throwing
like eighty five ninety pitches, I mean, just as fluid
as possible to going do what the hell was that yesterday?
I mean he couldn't record it out for like a
half an hour. Truth be told. The Astros on Deck
(03:22):
show is over at what eleven, thirty five, even forty?
Yesterday I told the family, I said, hey, let's go
have lunch, because, as you know, in this ten to
two spot, I don't get to have lunch with my
family very often. So we met and by the time
I got to the restaurant where we had our lunch,
it was a Chinese restaurant, General Sels Chicken Deliciosto. It
was five to nothing. I was like, oh hell no frommer.
(03:49):
First of all, it's like, man, if something doesn't go perfect,
and I'm not necessarily talking about yesterday, but a ball
is dropped infield, single an error, not backing up a play,
he melts like delicious drawn butter and a lobster dinner.
(04:09):
What is I can't have my ace doing that? And
by the way, that cap is off, Hunter Brown inherited,
it's yours. Give you pitch like at Ace a couple
of days ago. I know I'm supposed to deep breath.
I know I'm supposed to be the voice of reason,
(04:30):
But you're getting your blank kicked in it in the
top of the first inning. That's your ace. I mean
certainly no disrespect to Jason Alexander or Colton Gordon or
any of the other pitchers that have gone AJ blue
baw Ryan Gusto now he's residing in Miami. But that's
what those guys do because either they're not good enough,
(04:54):
or they're not experienced enough, or they're just getting their
feet wet as major league players. You can't do that
when you're the COEs of this baseball team. So you
know what you're alonger the co aes. You're the solid
number two. You've been playing like a number two, if
you know what I mean. But I got it, I
(05:16):
got it, I got it. Thank you, Jonathan. It was
a delayed reaction. I appreciate you. But yet, as bad
as things were yesterday, and I mean embarrassingly bad, we
can always thank the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies kicked the
(05:37):
crap out of the Mariners eleven to two. I mean,
so the Astros, who are playing about four hundred baseball
for about a month now, still have a game and athlete.
As my friend Taylor Swolf would say, and we are friends.
(05:58):
Although she doesn't know who I am. She told you
to shake it off. I ask you to shake it Off.
It's a brand new series in Baltimore and new staff
Ace Well co Ace Jason Alexander will throw today for
the Local nine against Brandon Young. Brandon Young who nearly
(06:19):
perfect game the Astros last week one in six within
the area of five point six eight. It's time for revenge.
We have a busy radio show today. Ross is off
by the way, and uh yes, he does get vacation time,
so he's allowed to take it, which means it's a
lot of you and it's a lot of me. We've
got some great guests coming up along the way on
(06:41):
the show this morning and this afternoon, and we want
you to be a part of the program first and foremost.
In his first hour especially, it's seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero. That's how you reach the show.
I did ask you guys on Twitter if shank it
(07:01):
off was okay or using a Taylor Swift song was okay.
The final results are in. One hundred and eighty five
votes were in. I put the poll a question in
for like an hour and a half and it went
right down the middle. Fifty percent said sure, why not
fifty percent said no, just no. Is that how America
(07:24):
feels about Taylor or, as my daughter calls her, Tata.
Is there a segment of the population that's willing to
be a Taylor Swift fan that just won't admit it
because if you do so, then you're considered not very
popular among your friends and your family. Your man car
will be asked for Again. I don't listen to her
(07:46):
songs typically, I don't have any on my phone. But
if we're on the car going somewhere together and the
girls want to put it on, it ain't the worst
thing I've heard. And by the way, Kandacy Chief fans
seem to love for some reason, and ratings for her
games than when she's in the stands at Arrowhead Stadium
tend to be a little higher than normally normal Kansas
(08:07):
City Chief games, but high digress. So we did it today.
This may be the first time in the history of
the show we've played at Taylor Swift song to open
up the program. But sometimes you have to do unnecessary
things to get necessary results, and the results are the
Astras need to win this game, need to win this series,
because the Astros can gain a game at a half
(08:29):
game on the Orioles today because the Orioles are not playing.
Excuse me, the Seattle Mariners. I don't believe a're playing.
Let me look at the old schedule here. No, they're not.
They will start a weekend series at home against the A's.
Oh hell, all right, gang, You know the Mariners don't
lose at home. The A's suck. The Baltimore Orioles suck,
(08:52):
except for what we saw last weekend seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five. Brian Bogacivic with us at eleven o'clock today.
Shut your bumbass up at eleven thirty, and I'm going
after a restaurant food chain on Chutch. Your bumass up
at eleven thirty. Okay, all right, an entire chain, you
(09:17):
hear me? Well the News at noon, Adam Amin will
join this programmer like Matt, who's Adam Amin? The name
sounds somewhat familiar. Adam Aman is a Fox broadcaster. He
has done lots of Astro games over the years. In fact,
he's done a playoff series I think with the Astros
a few years back. Adam Iman is one of the
nicest people you will ever meet in sports broadcasting, especially
(09:43):
on the national level. He is calling tonight's game on
Fox with Aj Persinski. It is a Fox regional game today,
it's not the main game. The main game is Boston Yankees,
but the Astros Orioles is the other Thursday night Baseball
Night in America game on Fox. Will have him join
us at twelve thirty the season debut of Doctor Roto
(10:03):
at one o'clock. And I don't know. I think Roto
has been with us like thirteen or fourteen years. It's
been a great run, great run, Doctor Roto. To get
ourselves ready for our fantasy football drafts at one o'clock,
and of course we got to believe it or not.
But the first hour is a lot of you and
a lot of me. And if you don't call in
and say hi, whether it be about the Astros, whether
(10:24):
it be about the Texans getting ready for their season opener,
you're gonna be hearing a lot of SFA and lumberjack
football breakdown from Jonathan and god knows, nobody wants that.
Seven one three two one two five seven nine zero
seven one three two one two five seven ninety from
Bervaldez There's no one that's claiming and screaming and calling
(10:50):
for a long term extension. There's no one, I don't think,
in the marketplaces calling for a short term extension or
something that's an Astro contract friendly extension. It feels like
to me, you tell me if I'm wrong, Houston Texas
that it's Fromber. Go get us some wins. Go help
(11:10):
this team win the American League West. Go help this
team make a deep playoff run, and then we will
wish you Von farewell wherever you may go, because my
God is his August sucked seven one three two one
two five seven ninety. Remember when Fromber about three or
four weeks ago questioned his team's defensive shift. Since then
(11:36):
six innings, six runs, five of which were earned against Boston,
then five and two thirds giving up four runs against
the Yankees. Then he did go uh six and two
thirds gave up three earned runs against Baltimore, but the
Astros didn't have a hit until very late in the game.
(11:58):
And then seven runs given up yesterday on seven hits
with four walks and two strikeouts from Bert. I mean,
the meltdown is whoo. I don't know if he's mad
at the world. I don't know if he's mad at
the Astros. I don't know if he's thinking about his
(12:20):
pending free agency. I don't know if it's just a
bad rut. But the man we are watching pitch every
fifth day for the Astros, and God blessed he's able
to go every fifth day. Least he's been able to
avoid injury. The same guy we've seen in the last
month that we saw in the first three months of
this baseball season. It is absolutely incredible how things have
(12:40):
completely fallen off the map. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. Brian Bogo sevinc is with us in
forty minutes. You may join us right now. It's seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. Doug is
whether it's so the Matt Thomas show. D what's going on?
Speaker 3 (13:00):
What's up?
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Brother?
Speaker 5 (13:01):
How are you man?
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Amazing?
Speaker 6 (13:03):
So?
Speaker 5 (13:04):
So, how much money.
Speaker 7 (13:05):
Is Framber losing with every start that he does this?
Speaker 5 (13:09):
I mean you got to think about it.
Speaker 7 (13:10):
In what Max Freed got eight eight years, two hundred
and something million.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
Isn't that what he got from the Yankees.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
I'm looking it up right now.
Speaker 7 (13:21):
So I mean, the way I look at it is
that Framber can be pissed off at whoever he wants
to be pissed off at. But the dude has costing
himself money because he's not gonna be an Astro unfortunately.
I have heard that there's a pending offer out there
from the Astros three for one hundred, which I mean,
if I were him at this point, I'd go ahead
and take that, because that's how it's funny, because I
(13:43):
really don't think that he's gonna get much more, much
north of thirty million, wouldn't you think?
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Uh? Yeah, Max Freed's contract is eight years of two eighteen,
which makes it twenty seven million dollars pier. I'm going
to tell you, and I don't know this for a fact,
but I'm gonna go as an edge can't guessed, Doug
that the person that told you that is whack because
why would you give him thirty three million dollars a
year for three years?
Speaker 7 (14:08):
That is because the short, short term contract.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, but that isn't even that's not even fair value.
I mean, that's that's just that's open. That's annual average value,
way over the top, way over the top.
Speaker 8 (14:20):
For him.
Speaker 7 (14:21):
If Framber had had three or four stellar starts and
you still can pull that trigger on that deal, I
think you would.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
I mean, if he if he's.
Speaker 7 (14:29):
Good Framber, he's worth thirty three million dollars a year.
I just don't know how long he's going to be.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Able to hold up.
Speaker 7 (14:35):
But because again, like you pointed out, the dude has
never had any injury issues, and that worries the crap
out of me, especially as you get older, because of
the fact that he can just I don't know if
he can continue on with that amount of torque on
his obum.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, look, this is a mood conversation.
I mean, Doug, I you know you've listened to so
long of you know he's he wasn't coming back a
year and a half ago. This was when you don't
even make an offer to him. This was this was
this was a non conversation piece. Now can people change minds?
(15:13):
Of course, Can the owner ownership group say, you know what,
we've rethought about this and we want to have you here.
Of course, could fromper say, look, I don't want to
go test for agency. I like it here. This is
the only place I've ever known and sometimes familiarity is
a factor in things. It typically isn't in sports, but
sometimes it is. And maybe the Astros knew that. Maybe
(15:35):
the Astros knew at the end of the day that
this is what he does, that you know, it's not
a matter of if, but when he starts to feel
the pressure of this. But this is the absolute worst
time for him to be having his worst baseball of
the season, because you need him. You've got a team
that is beset by injuries, you have an offense that
is non existent. You need your veteran leader, your front
(15:59):
end co ace, whatever you want to call it, to
go through the fight, through all of the negativity. And
instead he puts you behind the eight ball before the
game is people aren't sitting down having their first hot
dog with yesterday.
Speaker 7 (16:13):
And I'm right there with you, Matt And and like
you said, thanks man, thanks for the memories. As far
as I'm concerned with Framber, because like you said, I
think the Astros no Framber a little bit better than
anybody else on the planet, and they know if the
dude is not right in his head, he is not
going to be able to pitch well.
Speaker 9 (16:31):
And I think we've been lucky.
Speaker 7 (16:32):
We've had a good stretch, you know, for about two
to three years, I would even say twenty two. I mean,
he pitched well in that playoff run.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
But I don't know, dude. I think it's just.
Speaker 7 (16:44):
A situation where maybe he's starting to think that, you know,
I've got to pitch out of my mind in order
to get this long term contract and have I mean
everybody would feel the pressure of that, of course, But
but what I just don't get is that the fact that,
like he's said, he he sits there and goes out
and questions the you know, the defensive line alignment when
(17:07):
the dude falls apart anytime he throws a wild pitch.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
So it's like, come on, man, take a look in
the mirror.
Speaker 10 (17:13):
Like everybody's gonna.
Speaker 7 (17:14):
Make mistakes as a as a defensive player, but when
you throw wild pitches and you can't recover from that, like,
that's just garbage, man, And we're just seeing way too
much of.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
It, and I'm tired of it. Well, I got news
for you, Doug, and thank you for the phone call.
You're gonna be looking at him for another month and change,
and hopefully it's two months, because it's two months. It
means the Astros are making a deep playoff run. By
the way, remember when we were talking three or four
weeks ago about it being, man, it's gonna be awesome
(17:44):
maybe to have the number two seed in the playoffs
and a number, you know, a fight with Detroit for
the number one overall seed. And then Toronto got really
good for a while and the Astros regressed a little bit.
This is probably a week before the All Star break.
Have y'all looked at American League standings lately? The Astros
are four and a half games behind Toronto for the
(18:05):
number two seed. The Astros are going to open the
playoffs whether they are the division champs or they are
one of the long cards having to play that first series.
So you've got basically two months, or actually, excuse me,
you got less than that. You got what six weeks
maybe five weeks to get your pitching order in rotation,
(18:31):
whatever that may be. Lance mccutters will pitch this weekend.
Maybe get him back. Does Jason Alexander keep his way
in there? Can Fromber fix this before the end of
the season, because Hunter Brown kicked ass Internet, You guys
know that he deserved a better fate. He was ready
to go against Tarak Schooble. I ain't scared of Tark
(18:52):
schoobl No way, I'll go win. I'll do whatever it takes.
Oh my goodness, very very frustrating, very I'm very disappointed. Look,
and we love Charlie Morton, but Charlie Morton, I mean,
he ain't the same Charlie Morton we saw of yesteryear.
(19:14):
Now he's head back to back good starts. But he
beat the Minnesota Twins, who are basically a Triple A
team right now, and he beat the Astros, who can't
score any runs except for what we saw from Dubon yesterday.
It's just aggravating, friends, it just is. And I'm trying
to keep it cool. I'm trying to That's what you
(19:34):
come to hear to me ten to two weekdays, trying
to keep it cool. But sometimes you're just like h Frommer. Seriously,
you all sat down to lunch, listen to game on
seven ninety maybe you were a retired brewing having a
couple of pops, and your team was down five nothing.
I mean, god, that's not only his fault, but it's
(19:55):
yesterday was a big part of it. And of course
the astro bats haven't been their best either. Back on
the phones in a minute seven one three, two, one
two five, seven nineties, it's kind of nice not having
someone just argue if you constantly but every one of
your right takes and his takes are wrong. Oh what
Jonathan w do you know? I mean we're close enough
(20:18):
now you know his takes are whack.
Speaker 8 (20:20):
You know?
Speaker 2 (20:21):
He just every time I to tell the truth, he
doesn't win. What does he do? He gets defended? You don't, don't.
I'll put you You're you're involved into MILI.
Speaker 11 (20:29):
Come Monday, you're gonna be like, h I miss Ross wats.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Last time? Oh did I? Okay? Maybe maybe I will
miss him a little bit. Uh, let me tell you again.
Bogus Evic joining us today. By the way, tomorrow, I'm
very excited about this. Eddie noon Ye is the athletic
director at the University of Houston, and we're gonna talk
to him in studios be with us for an hour
between one and two tomorrow.
Speaker 12 (20:51):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
And that's where Jonathan is going to start his SFA
smack talk with the ad at the University of Houston.
And then he's gonna tell Willie Fritz next Tuesday when
he joined. Is how bad the Lumberjacks Gona with the Cougars,
aren't you Jonathan woof guys way mm hm think that's
gonna I want to promise I'm not no, no, no, I'm
not putting you in that spot. Don't. I don't want
embarrass you. I don't want you to grow to leave you.
I mean, we don't need that. We need to have
(21:12):
a strong internal relationship with the girl seven one three
two point two five seven nineties. So Eddie NOONI is
with us for an hour tomorrow. The talk not necessarily
about what's going on at you ah, but obviously it'll
be a prime focus, but just the whole college landscape,
because I don't know about you guys and gals out there,
but I am thoroughly confused by nil, the revenue sharing,
(21:32):
the paying of the players. And we're going to try
to have him give us a very condensed NIL transfer
portal paying athletes for dummies course, and we'll have that
tomorrow and studio from one o'clock until two right here
on Sports Talk seven ninety. Back on the phones, we
go Brian in Pairlands, whether it's a ten thirty five
Brian Good morning.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
To you, MG Heaven.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
You always said that Ross is the anchor that holds
you from going national and flourishing, you know, coast to coast,
telling you know, maybe easier two days to spread your
wings and fly a leabit.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
Do you know what, Brian, I'm gonna tell you this
is a god's honest truth. I would never, ever, ever
want to do a national radio show. You're saying, oh, yeah,
you've said that before.
Speaker 5 (22:15):
Yeah, now you've said that before.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
First of all, when you do a national show, you
have no passion for any teams. You have to talk
about everybody. Well, I don't want to do that. I
don't want to get into a deep dive breakdown if
Aaron Rodgers is gonna be successful in Pittsburgh or not.
I mean that's worth maybe have a segment or so.
I'm on a random day on this show, but I
want to talk about the teams that I care about.
(22:38):
And I could give two craps about the Los Angeles Chargers,
I could get I don't care at all about whether
or not USC football is relevant. I mean, I love you, Sean,
but you know what I'm saying. When you do national
you have to pretend to like everything. Oh that's not
a human that's not that's not what people want to do.
I want to talk about what is involved in the
city of which I'm in and if it happens to
(22:58):
be a team that I love, which are the Astros
and the Rockets, it makes it better. So now, the
money obviously is really good, but more importantly, Brian Mossel
shows don't really do very well. I mean, Collars Colin
Cowerd's got a decent following, but that's really about it.
I mean the national radio bit is very, very very overrated.
Speaker 5 (23:20):
No, I got Jack. No, I know you've said before,
you don't. I'm just I'm giving row Of a hard time.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
You should, That's what I'm always here for. You too,
Giving him a hard time is what I live for.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
Yes, Brian, exactly, but no, real quick, you know, I
think the Strows, I mean, God is like, could this
month get any worse? But you know, I guess in
a way, yes it could. There's still there's still a
few days left. But what I'm surprised about is the
fact that, honestly, with as bad as Hey Susanchez has
been going and Kim Smith right now, I think you're
starting to see that the lights are getting bigger than
(23:49):
maybe he imagined, or it is no knock on him.
I mean he went straight from Florida State to a
ball to the big so there's still a huge learning
curve for him. But why not just bring up your
do on It can't be any worse than some of
those at bats you're getting. And I'm not saying there's
not a process, but he could be having those at
bats here and giving you the same result essentially the
(24:12):
Hayesus Santa has been giving you, but maybe changing the
dynamic of that lineup a little bit and just the
way it works, and maybe release some pressure on some
of those other guys as opposed to continue to toil
him at Corpus Christy for a few more days. You
can work that schedule out of him, you know, playing today,
playing tomorrow, taking off Saturday, and you know, maybe Sunday
(24:33):
or whatever, and do that with the big league club
and provide some help because finally you've seen all these
injuries now that they were fighting through in June and
putting up that hallacious record, they've come back to bite
you now, this Jake Myers not being able to stay,
you know, but to return to the field and taking
way too long. But I think in the offseason, whenever
(24:53):
we get there, the Astros have to do a major
internal dive and Jim Crane himself is to what's they'll
return to play? Policy? Is what are they missing that?
Because you don't see Tommy john surgery with other teams
taking two and a halfs almost three years like it
is with Luis Garcia. I mean, we're going on almost
three full seasons of him missing because he was out
(25:16):
what early twenty three, I think, and he's been out
all of twenty three, all of twenty four, and now
most of twenty five. That shouldn't be normal. Something is
being missed or being overlooked. But I'm still not giving
up complete hope because you do have three against Toronto
still granted it's up there. But if you could somehow
in baseball's a where Dame Matt, we all know this,
(25:38):
you somehow go out there pull off a suite. Not
only do you own the season tiebreaker against them, you
cut into that massive lead and then you know you
go in and maybe take two or three in Seattle,
or can keep it close all right, you know, hopefully
you can put them away a little bit and stress,
just laid out a little bit and hopefully get some
of those guys back. But yeah, I don't get why
(25:58):
you wouldn't have your done up here, just taking those
swings here, because they're gonna be at least as competitive
as what hey, Sus Sanchez has given you right now,
or what's some of these other outfields at bet you're getting.
So hopefully, you know, our staff ace today gets can
can keep us in it and maybe now that we've
seen this Brandon young kid, it'll you know, at least
(26:18):
only keep us down to being no hit as opposed
to perfect. But you know, hopefully they can at least
at worst split against Baltimore. But you need to be
taking three or four at this point. But right now,
just win a game. Start with that, and then then
you go to the Brown method of we won one.
You know, we win one today, we win one tomorrow.
(26:39):
You know it has happened before, so you know, hopefully
they can get get some good mojo getting out of
Detroit and get some get some better at bets. But yeah,
I have jord On up there today, not not down
in Corpus, but that's me.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Thanks Brian for the call a couple of things. You know,
Originally I would have said Jordan needs to just get
his abs down in Corpus, get his mojo back, and
then the schedule works out best for him to return
on Tuesday at home against Colorado. And I think I'm
(27:17):
gonna stay with that, although it's very hard for me
to just overly defend that thought because of the fact
the team is just struggling so badly that if he's
getting swings, but I also don't know how he's feeling today.
I mean, he could be like, man, I need to
(27:39):
get back in the rhythm. I don't want to go
up there and look like I'm a deer in headlights.
You know, if he needs another eight game and another
day off. I mean, here's what we don't know, everybody.
We don't know how much he's going to be able
to play Ken. Does he need a day in between games?
Does he play consecutive if games, you know, where are
(28:02):
the hands? Is he able to make solid contact? And
let's face it, getting yourself and your mojo back at
the double A level when you haven't swung a bat
in a competitive game since May, it may be the
right elixir. It might be the right right formula. But
it also you know, get yourself a slow work back
(28:24):
into the mainstream of playing professional baseball again. But also,
I mean if you called him and said, Matt, the
Astros Descperine need a bat, Yeah, you're right, I can't.
I couldn't. You called me and said, Matt, I demand
us your die. They're not gonna listen to you. But
it wouldn't be the worst thing if he jumped on
a plane after tonight's game, sat out tomorrow, and played
(28:47):
Saturday Sunday. If he could, you know, as Dana Brown
said yesterday on the show, and you can take it
for what it's worth. He said, Look, you know, everybody
wants life in a microwave and you want to speed
through this and you just you know, get things heated up,
and it just doesn't work that way. Again, they have
not given me any intelligence about how he feels today,
(29:09):
what kind of swing he's gonna get, how he felt
after his performance, and how much more he needs. But
they're real, so you have to kind of think of
it in this particular viewpoint of Macro. Yeah, it's gonna
suck if the Astro bats continue to be woefully quiet
like they they were in Detroit and in Baltimore, and
(29:30):
if they do that four more times, but at least
if he gets back in place Tuesday, you still have
him for a month plus. And as bad as things
have been, and this is the thing we have to
kind of keep in the back of our mind or
maybe from the forefront. The Astros didn't lose any ground.
The Manners not only lost, but they got their ass kicked.
(29:50):
I mean, they absolutely got beaten to a pulp by Philadelphia.
Not that four to three loss means less or more
than an eleven to two loss, but you get my
drift on this. I mean, they're probably going, damn, we
couldn't take advantage of the Astros not being able to score,
and we got this is what happened to us. It's
going to set up those games against the Mariners in
(30:10):
Houston in a few weeks to be very, very very important.
On the Tommy John stuff. Yeah, Luis Garcia has been
a long road to recovery. And I don't even know
if they know what to do. And you know that
you see what the JP Frantz situation is. They didn't
bring him up to activate him, so I don't know
what's going on. But his rehabilitation stint is over and
now they're kind of in a wait and see mode
(30:31):
with him. Could very well be the same situation with
Louis Garci, because Garcia did get plastered pretty hard in
his last spring performance or his last Minor League performance.
On the positive, Christian Hobber had I think Tommy John
or the surgery fourteen months ago. So he came back
in normal time. So it's not always about what the
doctors for the astros are doing or the rehabilitation, it's
(30:53):
also the athlete as well. Christian Hobber came back on
a normal time. Unfortunately, Louis Garcia has not. Ten forty four,
it's Matt Thomas Joel Ross. Ross is off this for
the next handful of days. I'm with you today until
two o'clock. Brian boga Sevik will join this radio program
today in just about fifteen minutes. You may join us
right now at seven one three two one two five
(31:15):
seven ninety. That's seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Shut yo, bawmass up in forty I'm going
after an entire hotel restaurant chain, maybe me the first
time I'm ever going to do this. And I it's
a combination. I just don't get it and shut your
ball mess up. So you gott chuck your ball mass up.
(31:36):
Ain't nobody got time for that? Coming up at about
to forty minutes from now seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven nine zero. If you want to visit with
this via Twitter, let's continue on the phones and uh
talk to uh Vince and Katie on seven ninety Hi, Vince, Hey.
Speaker 13 (31:55):
Maddy, how you doing, Bud?
Speaker 2 (31:57):
What's going on? Vg?
Speaker 13 (31:59):
Oh Man, I'm doing all right.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
Man.
Speaker 13 (32:01):
I was convinced I was going to Big City Wings
for the lunch special today and then you started talking
about Chinese food. Now I'm a little bit conflicted.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
I know That's how I feel. You know what, go
to Big City Wings? What is today? Today's Thursday? It's
the buy one to get one free boneless Wing. You're
all good on that.
Speaker 13 (32:17):
I'm there, I'm there. So regarding fromber Man, I had
called you last season. I think fromber was going through
a rough stretch at the end of the season and
then he lost Game one against the Tigers in the
wild Card Series, and I called you and I said
I think Fromber cheats.
Speaker 8 (32:37):
And I'm going to go back to that.
Speaker 13 (32:39):
And I don't know what he's doing or how he
does it. I don't know if he's throwing a modern
day spitter with vasiline or if he's doing the opposite
and he's using what they used to call the sticky stuff, right,
I think it was a combo of mud and pine tar.
And you know, maybe he I think he's really smart,
(33:00):
and maybe he studies who's going to be behind the plate,
and he knows which umpires are more vigilant about policing
nefarious activities on the mound, and maybe maybe he picks
and chooses the games in which he's going to cheat,
because to me, he can look so good for like four, five,
(33:25):
six games in a row, and then he goes out
there and he just he's terrible for a couple of games.
And I'm not sure that you know, maybe he does
have a fragile, psyche fragile mindset, but I think he
cheats man.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Well, the problem with the problem with that is, first
of all, I can't prove that. Secondly, you know, they
check his glove and they check his hands multiple times
in a game. It's just about impossible. I mean, as
a matter of fact, I'm gonna go one step further, Vince,
I think it's completely impossible to cheat on the mound anymore.
I just do they the umpires check those hands and
(34:02):
those gloves all the time. They just you wouldn't be
you wouldn't escape a start where they you know, like
sometimes if if you are a part of a company
that requires drug testing, that you might get drug tested
one day in January and one in February and three
days in March. They check the hands and the gloves
multiple times every time they start. So to that, to me,
it makes it impossible.
Speaker 13 (34:24):
You don't think that's what's happening at.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
All at all? Zero percent chance?
Speaker 13 (34:30):
All right, man, Well, I hope he can pick it
up for the remainder of the season. And you know,
go astros, I'm.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
Just gonna tell you, I appreciate this set of it.
You'd like for this, but yeah, there's just there's just
no way. I just I can't prove it. I can't
prove it to you that that's that a picture's not
gone away with something. But that would be just about impossible.
You see. That's what we're doing, Gang, We're trying to
figure out I got my man, Vince call me so,
(35:00):
and he believes that sometimes he's getting away with stuff.
That's how we're trying to figure it out. You know
what it is, Honestly, Gang Fromber's mental makeup just isn't
the same as some other pictures in the sports. He
I mean, we have so much evidence of it. And
(35:20):
I'm not saying that Fromber is a bad dude. I'm
not saying that Fromber it doesn't have value, because when
he spends it properly, he is as fun to watch
as anybody you can see on a mound in baseball.
You don't you can't tell me that you don't take
great delight in watching him throw seven innings of three
hit ball with nine strikeouts in this big, nasty twelve
(35:44):
six curve ball. These guys are at the plate for
other teams are anticipating and they just can't make very
much hard contact or they swing and miss of the
strike can account. When he is on, it is like
listening to a beautiful chorus of singers in a choir,
or at a at a at a symphony. But man,
(36:04):
when he is off his rocker and a little soft
hit drops or a ball is not played properly, or
he fails to defend his position. It's like Terrible nineteen
eighty three punk rock. It's choppy, it's uneven. He sweats profusely.
Now you know, he's a sweater as it is. And look,
(36:25):
I used to be a sweater too until I lost
a lot of weight. But that's not a hearing or there,
but there is. And that's why Carlos Korea is kind
of like a big help for this squad is because
he can go there and say, Frober, calm down, get
over yourself. You're a major league pitcher with plus stuff.
His stuff still there. It's not like his velo's down.
(36:46):
It's not like his curve ball doesn't break, but man it,
you know, you you just have some guys that have
been your favorite pitchers over the years that just said,
give me the damn ball, and I'm not allowing anything
to get in my way of pitching to my team.
A nice long game, and frankly, he had to go
as long as it did yesterday because the bullpen's been spent,
(37:11):
so you know he was gonna have to wear it,
and he did wear it yesterday. I mean, was there
a part of me that maybe if you was thinking,
just somebody come get me. I hope that wasn't the case.
But I mean, gosh, I mean yesterday it was like
watching somebody that it made his major league debut that
(37:34):
had no idea how to throw a strike, and man,
it's it's crushy because as he's gone south, the team
has gone south. He threw ninety six pitches in five innings.
Because you know what, that's what Joe's like, You're gonna
wear this. You want to put us in this. You're
(37:54):
gonna you're gonna you're gonna gout there and you're gonna
you're gonna throw your You're gonna throw your pitches. Now,
he's not doing it as a pun but he's doing
this is necessity. And let's give credit to Dilo Santos
and Duban and Van Way. I mean, they did their jobs.
But that's not a high powered, octane bullpen to finish
(38:15):
off a game against the Tigers. That's a let's just
make sure we don't lose any of our high average
guys because A we can't score and be the guy
that was supposed to be our number one starter or
at least number two starter put us in a hole
before we were able to sit down and relaxed and
start watching the game. More of this with our friend
Brian Bogosovic to start the second hour the Matt Thomas Show,
Ross we take it till two o'clock today at seven
(38:37):
one three two one two five seven ninety seven to
one three two one two five seven ninety eleven oh
one Sports Talk seven ninety let's spend ten Cody minutes
with our friend Brian Bogusvik. He was busy on TV
duty yesterday, so we switched him to today and he
joins us here on the seven ninety. Boget's great to
hear your voice is always uh help me. We We
(39:00):
spent the first hour trying to figure out what has
happened to our favorite left hander who has had a
disastrous month of April. Hunter Brown knew the situation was
tight against Tark's well. He had to be as good
as he possibly could, and he was for those innings
that he threw. Astros needed a lengthy game. They got
their five innings from their starter and from Ervaldez, but
(39:21):
it was more of a hey, we got nobody else,
you're gonna have to worry this a little bit.
Speaker 8 (39:25):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 14 (39:26):
It was certainly disappointing, you know, seeing Tromber not really
go out there and rise to the occasion. I think
you got to look at it through two different lenses.
You know, first of all, the physical right, like this
is two out of his last three starts where the
sinker hasn't had the right shape. The curve ball has
been pretty ineffective, and so that's kind of a you
(39:49):
got to sit down, you got to look at some video.
You got to work on your mechanics in between starts
and get that right. You know, when he's kind of
feeling for his sinker a little bit and you see
the velocity really varying when you can tell he's trying
to find the right shape and the right release point
and he just didn't have it yesterday. But that's that
that happens throughout the course of the season. That's something
(40:10):
that that you can fix. That is unfortunate that it's
happening now, but.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
It just is what it is.
Speaker 14 (40:16):
The other side of it is kind of looking at
it from you know, where's from are at mentally right?
This is something that we've seen pop up throughout the
course of his career is when things don't go his way,
frustration builds and and it snowballs on him, and you know,
innings get away from him, and you know, he kind
of becomes his own worst enemy. And you know, we've
(40:38):
never seen it like yesterday where it almost felt like
he was frustrated going into the game. Usually it takes
a blue pit and you know, some guys bunting on
him and trying to steal bases to really kind of
rattle him a little bit. It almost felt like going
into that game with where the offense has been, it
was almost like a you know, instead of going into
that game thinking I'm going to be the guy that
elevates us, I'm going to be the guy that, you know,
(41:00):
even if we're not scoring runs, I'm going to throw
up a bunch of zeros and give us a chance.
It almost was a oh man, you know we're not
going to score any run. It's going to be harder
than it should be. It was almost a defeated before
you went out there kind of feeling.
Speaker 8 (41:12):
And that's really.
Speaker 14 (41:13):
Concerning because you need your best guys to be the
guys that kind of stand up and say, hey, you
made an error.
Speaker 15 (41:19):
Behind me.
Speaker 8 (41:20):
I'll pick you up.
Speaker 14 (41:21):
You guys in scor any runs, I'll pick you up.
And that start to the game yesterday certainly was not that.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
And Brian, we got to be fair here. We don't
want to be psychologists on the radio show. We want
to be people that talk about the game. You've played
the game, you know the intricacies of it. But it
is a pretty fair assertion to say that if you're
seeing that before the game, that's that's a huge cause
for concern. Now he could have that his dauber down
(41:50):
and then go throw seven innings of three hit ball
and spin and beautiful and get the high striking account
and we'd be like, well, that's just from from her.
But it's so disheartening because you know, I thought Hunter
Brown went in there going Trek Scoople is one of
the best pitchers in the game. I've got to be
my very best, and I thought he had the MAXI
to do that. And I guess the thing is, not
(42:11):
every player you've ever played with, Brian Bogasvik, or every
picture you've been with, or you've covered or talked about
or played with, has that maxia of I don't care
what's going against this world. I'm going to fight through it,
and maybe Fromber is one of those guys.
Speaker 14 (42:25):
But at the same time, we've seen him come up
big in big situations in playoff games in the past,
So it's not really that. It's more of just getting
him into the right headspace because we know from experience
that he can be a guy that can go out
there and thrive in pressure pack situations, and you know,
sometimes it builds start overstart. There's been some things that
(42:46):
haven't gone Fromber's way, even when he's been really good
in a couple of starts recently. So it's really just
getting him in the right space. You know, in between starts,
you've got to work on things mechanically in your bullpen sessions,
but you also got to get in the right headspace.
And I think you know, having a strong clubhouse, you know,
having Carlos Korea back, having a two VA there, kind
(43:07):
of sit down with him and reassure him that you know,
we're all in this with you and we need you.
I think that's kind of where you got to get
him to because if he's right, I mean I'm not
talking about physically right, but when he's right and he's
going out there and taking on that challenge. I mean,
he's been up to it in the past.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Brian Bogus evch with us here on Sports Talk Sevan
aniuh Bogie does lineup construction. That's where I think a
lot of folks will call me and say, hey, why
is this player in front of this guy? Why is
this guy hitting in this part of the order? And look,
Joe's is trying to find something that works, and unfortunately,
when you've had such little offense the last handful of
days as well, try flip move different guys around. Generally speaking,
(43:51):
your assessment of the lineup in terms of its up
and down changes, I don't think there's much to do
with it, because it's not like it's been a certain
pocket of players that have done their job. It's just
felt like a collective slump among the entire team. Thus
the case with no runs being scored except for the
two run homer yesterday afternoon.
Speaker 14 (44:08):
Yeah, I mean, you only have you know the tools
that are at your disposal, and I mean we've seen
we've seen lineup tweaks throughout the course of the season,
where if there's only a handful of guys who have
it going you know, Joe's really tried to bunch those
guys up, so you have some semblance of you know,
guys stringing.
Speaker 8 (44:25):
At backs together.
Speaker 14 (44:26):
The problem right now is that it's not really going
that way for anybody, and you can only make a
lineup out.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
Of what you got.
Speaker 14 (44:32):
And you know, they dropped Sanchez down in the in
the lineup a little bit, but you know, at some point,
the lineup is what it is and the roster is
what it is, and it's on the players to go
out there and hit. And you can try to find
favorable matchups and kind of give yourself advantages in the margins.
But when the players aren't hitting, it doesn't matter, you know,
(44:52):
if you're hitting first or you're hitting nines.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Honestly, uh boogie uh. This team has had it's offensive
rolls really more so this consistently as compared to being
a team that's putting up seven, eight to nine runs.
To me, this has been a kind of a byproduct
if you've got a lot of guys getting a lot
of AB's that maybe are playing the most. And I'll
(45:17):
use Cam Smith as example. Taylor Tremill has been a
guy that's been up and down with a variety of
different teams. Jacob Melton looks like he's not necessarily ready
for the big time of major league baseball. How much
of that is do you think is the moment right
now is really big for a lot of these young
men who have not gotten as many professional at bats
like this. How much of this is dog days and
(45:38):
how much of this is My god, Jordon, please make
sure your hands feel good. We need you in the
heart of the line up as soon as humanly possible.
Speaker 14 (45:45):
I think the biggest thing is is, you know, middle
of the order major league hitters run producers. Big time
hitters like Jordon or guys like him aren't very common,
and you can you can find guys who are swinging
a hot bat and have them in the middle of
the order for a while, and you can, you know,
(46:06):
play a hot hand for a little bit. But you know,
at the end of the day, to have a you know,
big time offense that consistently produces runs, you need the
horses to do it. And you know, they did a
great job for a long time getting by piecing together
a lineup and having guys put in situations where they
can thrive and getting production out at the bottom of
(46:27):
a lineup of guys who are just kind of filling
in roles. You know, a lot of that has to
do with you need your big guys up at top producing,
so the guys further down the lineup can just be
you know, supplementing that. But you know, at the at
the end of the day, you become who you are,
and you know, Cam Smith is a guy who was
in college last year, and some of these other guys
(46:48):
were guys that were not necessarily going to be counted
on as everyday players, And when you get thrust into
that role at some point, it's going to get exposed
a little bit. And you know, if they're going to
score runs consistently and be a productive offense consistently, it's
got to be from the guys who can do it.
And getting yourd On back will be helpful, and getting
(47:09):
Altuve hot again will be helpful, and getting Christian Walker
going will be helpful. But yeah, you're you're not going
to consistently score runs if you're just trying to piece
mail a lineup together.
Speaker 2 (47:18):
How much did the former outfielder and you feel for
Taylor Trammel and Hitty took in the first thing in
the game yesterday.
Speaker 14 (47:25):
You know what I First of all, that's the position
that you're in physically there where you're you're on a
dead sprint backwards, but at the same time you're trying
to kind of fight to keep the ball from from
pailing over your head, so you're leaning back like that's
the worst position you can be in to run face
first into the wall. So yeah, that doesn't feel good.
But this is you know, one of the things where
(47:47):
you point at and you say, Okay, the team's not
playing well, they're not hitting well, they're not winning games.
You know, how frustrating is it? You know, is Joe's
spot of going in the clubhouse and flipping tables and stuff.
But it's like you've got guys literally run face first
into the wall. I mean, the night before Taylor Trammel
laid out on the warning track and landed flat on
his back. So there's no lack of effort, there's no
(48:08):
lack of playing hard, and so yeah, I feel for
guys going out there and trying to put in that
effort and still not getting the results that they want.
But you know, it's not for lack of going for it.
Speaker 2 (48:22):
Lastly, and I don't mean to put twenty five egos
into your mind here for a second, or twenty six,
I should say, But if your Joe Espada and your
team has scored two runs and a handful of games,
nearly got perfect game the other night against Baltimore, you're
seeing that same guy tonight. As a matter of fact,
what is the clubhouse tenor? I know it has been
(48:42):
so even keeled for about a decade, even when things
haven't been great, because there have been some downspots. There
always is in one hundred and sixty two game schedule.
But this feels I don't know if the word tense.
I know there was a player conversation that took place
at Carlos Career had said a couple of things here
and there. How does Joe managed this when it's not
necessarily about guys not performing up to expectations. There maybe
(49:06):
a few in the mix, but it's also a lot
of guys that are like, man, we just need some help.
And whether it's coming through pitching and injuries and getting
guys back, whether it's Jordan and that's a lot of
pressure on him. How does Joe handle the tough love
versus August dog days versus if I start screaming and
yelling and throwing water, gatorade bottles and whatnot, I might
lose my clubhouse and we're still a game in a
(49:27):
half in front of everybody else in the American League West.
Speaker 14 (49:30):
Yeah, it's certainly not about screaming and yelling, you know.
That's not that's not going to move the needle with guys.
You know, what you do want to do is express
and create the sense of urgency which is already going
to be there with a lot of guys who've been
through you know, stretch runs and playoff hunts. But just
kind of say, hey, guys, you know, we know that
(49:52):
over the course of a season you worked your way
out of slumps, but this is kind of you know,
we don't have the luxury of time on our hands
right now. You've got to push a little bit harder
and just not even from a physical standpoint of working
harder or doing more, but just we need that focus
to be there every day and kind of lock in
like we would if this were the last series of
(50:13):
the season and our playoff hopes we're riding on it.
Just kind of create that sense of urgency now and
hopefully you can kind of teams can click and you
snap out of it and then carry that through the
rest of the season.
Speaker 2 (50:25):
Great stuff as always, friend, thank you for the time. Well,
let's get you back on our normal Wednesday spot next week.
We thank you and talk soon.
Speaker 4 (50:32):
All right, Matt too, you.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
Got It's Brian bogasch with us here every week normally
and on Wednesday's we had to move to today because of
his TV duties on Space City. Looking forward to getting
him back in the regular Wednesday spot to next week.
All right, that's Brian Bogascevich. You want to come in,
and then he had to say you are more than
welcome to do so. It's seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety I don't know how you guys feel
(50:56):
about computer models, but the Athletic had a computer model
put together the Texans wins and losses for twenty twenty five.
I want to read to you what one person that
writes for that publication says about what he expects from
the Astros or from the Texans this season. We'll go
(51:17):
through that, and then at the bottom of the hour,
we're gonna ask you and ask you to call in
and tell some people to shut their bumbasses up. And
I'm going after a national food chain. Mat with you today.
Ross is offered a little few days. He's going camping.
(51:37):
He got in his car and he drove to Austin
yesterday and now he's going to West Texas by himself. Man,
you know what, And I know I know, I'm mister Texas.
I know you guys know that I'm I think I'm
missing out on something about camping. But that's his number
one jam see to me roughing it. Jonathan is not
(51:59):
having service available at a hotel.
Speaker 11 (52:01):
You know, I'm I'm gonna agree with doing this. I'm
just not a camp guy. I don't think I ever
would just go out there and just chill out.
Speaker 2 (52:07):
You know. You know what would scare me. It wouldn't
be necessarily sleeping in a sleeping bag or an air mattress.
It would be like setting up my camp, my tent
and having like critters getting within five feet of them.
Speaker 11 (52:19):
Let the bugs and all that stuff, bugs, armadillos, raccoons.
I can't stand getting bit by mosquito. That just drives
me nuts already.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
I would think. So is there anybody that likes to
get big biting mosquito, but some people take it more.
Speaker 11 (52:31):
I'm just like, I'm a real, like, I'm a real
I'm just a whin anybody.
Speaker 2 (52:34):
I just hate it. I don't know why. You know what,
You're more like me, and I appreciate that. Yeah, yeah,
I was mosquito biting is that in the old red
ants getting on your body and not one of my
two favorite things. So hopefully he does not get attacked
by any sort of lions or bears or tigers or
critters of any sort. Wolves, they're all out there. He
(52:56):
likes that stuff. But you know, teacher, you know, everybody
has their own have to have their own form of relaxation.
Seven one three seven one again, we got to shut
you a ball myself. I ain't nobody good time for
that coming up in just a few minutes here onto
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. So congratulations to Derek Rose.
Will have his number one jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls.
That's going to be our theme of today's edition. To
(53:16):
believe or not, not Derek Rose, but googleble things about
retired jerseys. So we'll have it for you today at
one fifty I'm not a big computer generator guy, but
sometimes it's interesting to at least bring it up for you.
In which I'm going to do for you here there
is uh, you know. The Athletic is that pay journalism service,
(53:39):
which I think is fantastic. The writers are really good.
It doesn't necessarily give you the how something happened, but
why things happen, you know, like Channel Rome doesn't write
a story Astros lost the Tigers. This this, Here's how
it happened. He kind of gives you the behind the
scenes stuff. And while the Chronicle and the MLB folks
do a great job and a variety of sports, I
(53:59):
like the behind the scenes stuff and that's why I'm
a big fan of the Athletic. Well, a guy by
the name of Austin Mack ran computer modules of all
the NFL win totals in twenty twenty five. In the NFL,
he uses statistical models and simulations to predict how teams
(54:21):
are going to do. He simulates the season one hundred
thousand times. See how many games a team is expected
to win, how often the team makes the playoffs, and
the likelihood of that winning the division and the Super Bowl. Oh,
that's kind cool. So I thought, you know what the
guy's doing. His work is due diligence. I'll at least
give it a readA maybe bring a couple of things up.
(54:44):
What I did, and I was surprised by, was the following.
He has his computer module has the Bills winning eleven
point two games, which obviously you don't, so it's a
little between eleven and twelve. He has a Ravens winning eleven.
He has the Chiefs winning ten point nine, which we're
going to run ups a lot. He has the Bengals
winning ten. He has the Broncos winning nine point two.
(55:06):
He has the Texans at eight point eight, which again
we're gonna run up. That says a nine to eight season.
His computer module says the Texans have a fifty three
point four percent chance of making the playoffs at a
two point five percent chance of making the Super Bowl
or winning it. Now, this projection model takes into account
(55:31):
let's see various metrics, simulates each game of the regular
season in playoffs with until a Super Bowl champion emerges.
That process is repeated one hundred thousand times to again
provide a realistic measure of how likely a team is
to make the playoffs and the Super Bowl. So computers
aren't everything. They are just one metric. But this computer
(55:55):
has the Texans at eight point eight wins, below the
Broncos at nine point two, and just in front of
the Chargers at eight point five and the Steelers at
eight point seven. Now, this reporter for the Athletics says
the following about the AFC South. The division should produce
one of the tightest races in the NFL, with some
(56:16):
intriguing teams, but no true Super Bowl contender. Right now,
my model doesn't project any team in the South to
win nine games. The Houston Texans have won back to
back division crowns with ten win seasons, while the Jazars
won three years ago with nine. Part of the reason
for the imparody in this division is the inconsistency and
(56:38):
uncertainty at the quarterback from top to bottom. Hmm. I
don't know if i'd completely agree with that. I don't
think there is inconsistency with CJ. Stroud. I think he
just got to be better. One really awesome rookie campaign,
a so so second season, but now I don't think
a lot of it on his fault. He does bear
(56:58):
some responsibility, but not all of it on him. The
writer goes on to say the division race will likely
hinge on whether C. J. Stroud can play more like
he did as a rookie before his sophomore campaign. A
new offensive coordinator and some positive aggression should mean to
prove Stroud improves upon last year. However, if Houston struggles again,
(57:19):
Jacksonville seems prime to take over. Trevor Lawrence has also
been inconsistent during his young career, but playing for a
new coach should do wonders for his efficiency. My model
gives Houston a forty five percent chance to win the division,
while Jacksonville lands at twenty six, So seventy one percent
of the computer model says either Houston or Jacksonville wins.
(57:41):
The other twenty nine would be the Colts with Daniel
Jones no thanks, or the Tennessee Titans in full rebuild mode.
Don't be surprised if those two teams, meaning Tennessee and in
Annapolis are quote unquote contending for top ten ten picks. Again,
(58:03):
it's just computer module. But again, the computer got round
one hundred thousand times, so it's a he didn't put
it into an algorithm and say, won't run it one,
so it makes it my predictions look better. I don't
necessarily think it's even food for thought, but it's just
something that I wanted to bring up to you because
I will say this, and I've not looked at everybody's
(58:24):
per season projections, but it feels like to me that
the common number is the Texans are going to win
ten games and lose seven and that should be plenty
good to win the AFC South unless Jacksonville has all
unless Trevor Lawrence has his best season. And every year
I think the NFL is looking for Trevor Lawrence to
(58:47):
have his best season, but yet he just can't seem
to pull it off. For being a quote unquote franchise
one dash one, hard to unbelieve, hard to believe this
guy isn't already in the Hall of Fame quarterback Trevor
Lawrence has been a major disappointment to me. And we
(59:07):
see him twice a year and he's had a couple
of nice runs, but the guy overthrows guys, He's inconsistent,
he doesn't have great pocket awareness. For this being a
unbelievable Remember how how everyone and their mother had him
as the number one pick before the season even started,
(59:28):
and thus he was he's just been mid and the
Texans are are lucky to have a quarterback situation in
their division that has a true rookie in a reclamation
project in Tennessee to a hot mess in Indianapolis to
an underperforming overall number one pick. So if you are
(59:52):
you know, if you are a diehard Texans fan or
anally he's a decent Texans fan, you gotta be thinking. Man,
Thank god the Texans are in the AFC said, because
ten and seven it's going to be good enough to
win this division AFC West. It may not be AFC East,
you never know. ANFC North very competitive. The problem is
(01:00:12):
ten and seven just isn't going to get you a
home field advantage for more than one round of the playoff.
It's gonna probably put you in either Baltimore, Buffalo or
Kansas City for Week number two. And we've been there
and done that way too many times. Those teams we've
just discussed. So again, the athletics says eight. I what
I say, give me the number here just to make
sure the Tennessee. The Athletics computer module says, the Texans
(01:00:36):
are going to win eight point eight games this year
and a fifty three percent to make the playoffs and
a two point five percent chance to reach the Super Bowl.
All right, time for us to tell some people to
shut their bull ashes up. Let's go seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven to one three
two one two five seven ninety. We're taking until noon
(01:00:59):
with the news. At noon, we've got Adam Amine's gonna
call tonight's Astros Oriols game. He'll be with us in
one hour from uh Fox Sports and from Baltimore. And
we got doctor Roto to lead things off for us
in his season premiere. He'll be with us at one
o'clock this afternoon. Seven one three two one two five
seven nintie. If somebody's pissing you off, tell them to
shut their bumbasses up. Seven one three two one two
(01:01:21):
five seven NINETI. It is eleven twenty nine here on
sports Talk seven nine. All right, here we go seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. You're mad
about something somebody said, somebody did to you. The next
half hour is your cathartic time to call seven one
three two one two five seven hountie and tell them
to shut their bumbass up.
Speaker 15 (01:01:42):
Mate, sit to bum ass up, man.
Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
Or if someone is telling you about their gout, or
someone is telling you about they have gone to five
doctors in five days. I'm so tired. You're like, I
hope you feel better. But anybody got time to hear
about your daily physical position plan? Hey, nobody get time
for it. Some at the office sitting in front of
the compy machine telling you about how they gotta do
(01:02:08):
this and they gotta do that, and they got anybody
got time for that. Let's get into the compy machine,
Let's get our copies, and let's get out of there. Jonathan,
I got two to start with. I'm gonna let you
go and then we're gonna let the audience go. Seven
one three, two, one two five seven. Unty one does
a sports take? One is not okay? Racerrarol. I know
(01:02:31):
it's you are changing the logo for no apparent reason.
You are changing the insides of your restaurant because you're
trying to be cool and hamp I'm sorry. We go
to Rack and Rarol for your eggs, your hash bron
(01:02:52):
Castle role, your bacon, and to play that game with
golf tease and to go to the country store to
buy gum and candy and buy little uh miniature license
plates with our kids' names on them. We don't go
because we're hipsters. You changing your logo is ridiculous. You
(01:03:13):
changing the insides of Racker Rail. You're a country store
who serves awesome.
Speaker 11 (01:03:18):
Pancakes, Awesome pancakes.
Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
Awesome pancakes, chicken fried steak, even the burgers are not bad.
Wrecker Rail, What the hell are you doing? Your stock
prices have dropped twelve percent in one day. Ain't nobody
got time for you changing up what's what's already working?
Ain't nobody got time for day? And to get rid
(01:03:42):
of that old dude on the crack on the rack
of rail logo. Shit joebumass up, Mike, shit chobum ass
up man wrack of ral Seriously, you know, come on
so much? Why wire people doing it all right? Number
two Dennis Shrewder, former part time Rocket Commas. Certainly dude
(01:04:08):
actually Jonathan, He says he'll never be loved as much
as Durton Devinsky in Germany because of his dark skin.
When I was fourteen, I sat in front of a
TV watching Durton Novinsky carry the flag of the two
thousand and eight Summer Games in Beijing. Back then, I thought,
how cool. There's no greater honor. It's a greater honor.
(01:04:29):
But for me, it'll never be the same for as Dirk,
I will never receive the same love in this country
because I'm dark skin. Dennis Shrewds. You are not even
close to the same player as Dirton Evits. I don't
care if you were green colored or orange, or you
are musty white. You're not as good as Dirk. Dennis
(01:04:50):
Shrewder shit, yo, bumass up.
Speaker 15 (01:04:53):
Me shits obuma ass up man.
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
I mean, you gotta be kidding me. If you were
as good as Durt Nevinski, they would love on you.
You're just not and you never will be here in
end the story. Shut your ballb ass.
Speaker 15 (01:05:11):
Up shit, sobam, ass up man.
Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
Camp man. There are some people in this world. Whoo yeah,
you're not gonna get the same love. Dirting Nevinsky is
one of the greatest players in the history of the sports,
the greatest player probably coming out of Germany. You're not
suck it, seriously, what is wrong with you? Like Racker
(01:05:36):
rail logo too? Oh my god, I mean, just let
let us go eat our two eggs scrambled with ham
mixed in with cheddar cheese and call it a day.
They'll simmon apples hit hard too. By the way, Take Jonathan,
what's the matter with you, Matt?
Speaker 11 (01:05:54):
I don't know if you've seen on your for you
tab or for you tabs and everything I have, But
everything that I beginning the last couple of days has
been about this thirty seven U Football league. For these oh,
they gotta be like they're a grown man. I saw
one right now, a six year old that went in
to go play playing straight tackle football. By the way,
(01:06:15):
barely any rest hitting them dog mess out of each other,
Like I'm saying, like full ray lewis everything like getting
ct on there and the dude, the old man towards
ACL the first play, and I keep seeing this. Ain't
nobody got time for this? Is you're just getting hurt happy.
Y'all probably don't have insurance and you're taking your life away.
You're probably like fifty forty five. If anybody's doing that,
(01:06:37):
listen to it. Come on, listen. Health is well, guys,
Come on, yeah, health well.
Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
And nobody's sixty years old if you're playing tackle football, Oh, Jonathan, Ironically,
my for you tab doesn't have that. Oh you got
some different things when you see oh different, you know
I got I got a lot of wrestling on mine
for you tab right right with bikini too. Hunh. I
(01:07:01):
cannot confirm her to not seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety Ain't nobody got time for something? You
tell us? You want to tell me somebody to shut
their bomb asses up? You know where to find us.
Seven one three two one two five seven nine zero
(01:07:24):
Kenneth on seven ninety ken, what's the matter with you?
Speaker 3 (01:07:27):
Yeah? I don't want nobody to take this as a
whole that disrestake man. But this is a cowboy saying
and Jammy Jones kind of thing, man, because every year
is like ground haulsday over and over with how to
see you and go? And uh, I just had to
ask one, I'm this morning, man, do you really believe
that they got a chance this year to make the
(01:07:47):
Super Bowl? He said yes? And see I started to
just tell him, man, y'all like a colt now with
your leader Karry Jones, that like the evangelistic guy that
put shame too, Jimmy Schwager, and I'd like to tell
all of y'all Man is hopeless and ship up up.
Speaker 15 (01:08:05):
Shit o mass up Man him.
Speaker 2 (01:08:10):
Jonathan are Cowboy fans and Aggie fans of the same cloth.
Speaker 11 (01:08:13):
Yes, yes, someone grow up DFW. I can tell you
right now those every.
Speaker 2 (01:08:18):
Time they really do think they're going to win the
Super Bowl every year, every year, every year. It was
zero hesitation. Jerry Jones might go down as one of
the worst executives football wise in the history of sports
because no other general manager would be able to keep
his job as long as he has. Although he's the
(01:08:40):
one that can fire himself. There's no board of directors
he has to answer to. He doesn't answer to his son.
He is the boss and the greatest sports marketing is greatest,
greatest sports business person in the history.
Speaker 11 (01:08:52):
Yeah, it was like he makes a ton of money
over there, Jase.
Speaker 2 (01:08:54):
For sure, sports business wise, he's number one on the
list as a football acumen general manager. Have you one
of the worst ever? Should have been fired it? I
don't know. Fifteen sixteen years ago, let's talk to Alan
on seven ninety Alan, what's the matter with you?
Speaker 16 (01:09:10):
Hey, I've just been laughing my butt off at you
guys today. The racker raal thing is awesome, so I
have to go along with the same thing. And I
must listen to this station too much. I got all
this nice sound gear in my car and good music,
and I listened to seven ninety all the time. I'm
so sick of that Wendy's advertisement with that lame mass
whatever it.
Speaker 2 (01:09:31):
Is they do.
Speaker 16 (01:09:34):
Please do another one, Please shut up, do another ad. Second,
why are people still booing pickoff moves in twenty twenty five?
Speaker 2 (01:09:45):
It is nobody.
Speaker 16 (01:09:47):
Nobody got time for that.
Speaker 2 (01:09:48):
Yeah, yeah, nobody, Alan, I'm right there with you. By
the way, I want man that what do they call
that thing? A double stack? That HiT's okay.
Speaker 11 (01:09:58):
I'm not a fan of Wendy's what. I'm just not
a fan. I'm just not a fan the frosty maybe,
but even.
Speaker 2 (01:10:05):
Then, but the frost you gotta let him melt for
a while.
Speaker 17 (01:10:07):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
You gotta get a spoon. You have to. You can't
drink it like it's a shake. They have to have
the goods. The lemonades are good. Uh, the spicy chicken
is good. Again. That double stack hits properly, but uh,
and then yeah, what you don't need to pay. He's exact.
All is exactly right. Why y'all boo and pickoff moves.
You can do it twice. If you do it a
(01:10:28):
third time, you better get the guy out or he
gets the free base. So baseball fans stop booing. Ain't
nobody got time for you booing pickoff moves. Ain't nobody
got time for dead? Exactly all right, here's the rule,
ladies and gentlemen. Brad is gonna be on the line.
He wants to tell people to shut their bomb masses up.
Now you know, if Brad is on hold, we don't
(01:10:50):
take him unless there's nobody else on the screen. So
if there's somebody else that's there's something you want to
get off your chest, let it be hurt. It's seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero seven
one three two one two five seven ninety Ain't nobody
got time for something? You tell us if you want
to tell somebody to shut their bumba asses up, come
on in seven one three two one two five seven
(01:11:12):

time for that? And shut your bumbass up. We need
you right now. Seven one three two one two five

you work your way through a Thursday. Adam Imin calling
tonight's Astros Orioles game, We with a some Fox in
about forty minutes here on seven ninety. Let's go to
Parker on seven ninety. Parker, what's the matter with you, Matt?
Speaker 18 (01:11:51):
How are you doing today?
Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
Amazing?
Speaker 18 (01:11:56):
I have a question, so say in jord On comes
back here in the next week. How is our everyday
lineup gonna look with us adding Sanchez playing left? Is
al Toovey gonna go back to everyday second base? Or
is Alvarez gonna get playing time in the outfield? Or
(01:12:19):
is he just gonna be a designated hitter?
Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
Parker, what's the name of this segment, bub ass or something?
Speaker 18 (01:12:29):
But I can't see Jacob Melton's Bob Mass playing center
field every single day?
Speaker 15 (01:12:36):
Shit, obum ass up man, Parker.
Speaker 2 (01:12:39):
I'll answer your question in just a few minutes. Parker.
We'd love you. Thank you very much, but asking you
a legit question during this segment of the show. Shit yo,
bumbass up mate, shits you bum ass up man, Love
you though, Parker, and we will do a deep dive
into the Astros lineup once Jordan comes back. Let's go
(01:13:02):
to Felipe on Seminie Felipe. What's the matter with you?
Speaker 7 (01:13:07):
Well?
Speaker 8 (01:13:07):
First of all, Parker shuts your bum ass up man.
Speaker 19 (01:13:11):
Second of all, for national best. Ain't nobody got time
for y'all not be hitting.
Speaker 9 (01:13:15):
Balls, not getting runs.
Speaker 19 (01:13:19):
It's hard to be a natural player now, but we
are here.
Speaker 8 (01:13:23):
What I really want to talk.
Speaker 2 (01:13:23):
About is.
Speaker 19 (01:13:26):
You mentioned that people are booming to pickoffs.
Speaker 8 (01:13:30):
Y'all boo to pickoffs.
Speaker 19 (01:13:31):
But y'all will not boom when people still do the wave.
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
Ban the wave fan the way for the.
Speaker 16 (01:13:38):
People that still do the wave, man, set your bum
asses up man, all of y'all that do the.
Speaker 15 (01:13:43):
Way up man.
Speaker 2 (01:13:45):
By the way, if you want to sit up man,
the Twitter account is at wavebusters h o U wave
busters h ou if you would like to follow the
phenomenon the frenzy that is that's my burner yet, is
it actually you? I mean, I don't know how to
have one person. Hey, I keep seeing it. I didn't know. Hey,
(01:14:10):
Jonathan shits your bumb ass up, mane.
Speaker 15 (01:14:14):
Geez shit, so bum ass up?
Speaker 20 (01:14:16):
Man?
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
Thank you? Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety James incline, James, what's the matter with you?
Speaker 21 (01:14:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:14:26):
When I call this show, I call the show hopefully
to get some insight. And I don't need Ross telling
me nothing that I need to google it first, or
that I don't know the analytics of who's hitting. When
some guy goes, oh for twenty four and I call
up and say, why would you pinch hit for this guy?
And he goes, well, you don't know the analytics. So
Ross shuts your bum ass up.
Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
There you go up, man always walking to head, tell
Ross and shut his bum ass up. That's good. All right,
let's set this, uh the line up for you. Here
at eleven fifty three, our good friend Yankee Lover James
and garden Oaks is in the line. Sen it's bratt
need I say more? Seven one three two one two
(01:15:07):
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven nine zero. You want to call in, you will
have carte blanche. James and garden Oaks seven ninety James,
what's the matter with you?
Speaker 22 (01:15:24):
Well, back to the governor for taking my call and
everybody else and r V Matt, I hope he's having
a good trip and everything, because he's hard at work.
Now I'm gonna get right to it. The people that
was calling that uh that day and calling the RV
show and talking about that, they know baseball, and then
you could be a fanatic fan, but you don't know baseball.
First of all, all of that talk was unnecessary to
(01:15:45):
that guy. You were making him getting all nervous and
agitated before his vacation time. And also to them dumbass
people over there in Box Sports, especially Jason Smith and
his Magpie sidekicks, talking play by play about them the
minds of the Yankees. Well, look at the picture now, buddy,
your message is just barely hanging on by three and
(01:16:05):
the Yankees, as always, they're thriving and surviving. Okay, And
thank you Governor for checking my quote. All those people
got to shut that bum ass up.
Speaker 15 (01:16:13):
Shit to bum ass up man who.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero. You
know the Yankees hit fourteen home runs in the last
two games. I mean, dang seven one three, two, one two, five,
seven nine zero, Steve is with us? Steve, what's the
matter with you? Man?
Speaker 8 (01:16:43):
Nothing?
Speaker 9 (01:16:43):
Because that's the shortest way time I ever had on
the call in on the Show's Well.
Speaker 2 (01:16:46):
The reason for that is because we took you over Brad.
We would have normally gone to Brad and take you
bum front of Brad.
Speaker 8 (01:16:52):
Well.
Speaker 9 (01:16:53):
I almost didn't want to call in because I'm curious
about this Brad dude, you know, like Digg or what
he has to say.
Speaker 2 (01:16:58):
Now, well, guess what you're gonna hear him. He's a
friend of the show.
Speaker 9 (01:17:02):
Okay, Well, I need your help with something. There's a
guy who does a segment on seven ninety that's kind
of pro Aggie Aggie oriented. I don't know who the
guy is.
Speaker 19 (01:17:13):
Who is that guy?
Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
Pro Aggie? I don't know who you're talking about.
Speaker 9 (01:17:18):
Yeah, there was, there was some guy and it was
kind of an It was in the evening, maybe around
seven at night. I don't remember it was weekday or weekend.
But he was talking about how A and M may
have one of the best rushing game rushing attacks in
the country this year, and I'm like, well, wait a second.
So I called the guy and I said, you know
who led the SEC in rushing last year individually? Trey Weisner,
(01:17:42):
Trey Weisner's back, CJ. Baxter's Back's running back in his
recruiting class, Christian Clark the true question from last year's
back from injury, and we still got Trey Wiser and oh,
by the way back to out being longhorns, shut you up.
Speaker 15 (01:18:03):
Ship obamass up man.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
Thank you, Steve. That was kind of long winded, but
again remember you got in and over Brad, so you
have that for you.
Speaker 23 (01:18:12):
Uh SEV two two five seventh ninety, Thanks Steve rick

Speaker 24 (01:18:26):

bit of Matt brad moment shining moment of the week.
Uh So I got a couple of such a bummer

Speaker 5 (01:18:40):
So that's one.
Speaker 3 (01:18:42):
Uh let's go with wherever.
Speaker 24 (01:18:47):
Absolutely the uh Rick, We're.
Speaker 2 (01:18:50):
Gonna let you go because your phone line is terrible.
I don't know if you have like a pillow over
your your speaker part of it, but it's terrible. We
love you, but we're gonna go and take it as an.
Speaker 15 (01:18:58):
L shut so bum ass up.
Speaker 2 (01:19:01):
Man. We were going to tell you to shut your
bum ass up, and your phone did. And we have
terrible phone lines here, so I know it can be
our fault sometimes, but not that case. Uh, Tim in Galveston, Tim,
what's the matter with you?
Speaker 5 (01:19:16):
What's the matter with me?
Speaker 2 (01:19:19):
Man?
Speaker 5 (01:19:19):
I'm sitting down here on the Gulf Coast Galveston, looking
at this beautiful water, and you know what I want
to say to Charles Barkley, You need to shut your
bum ass up. Beautiful week.
Speaker 2 (01:19:32):
Yeah, that's it, that's it, Thank you, Tim. I love
Galaishon too. You know why mister Texas loves all the
state and I love Galveston. Shout out to you. Love you.
Down the four o nine, let's go to Roger on
seven ninety. Roger, what's the matter with you?
Speaker 24 (01:19:51):
Uh?
Speaker 19 (01:19:51):
Well, everything Fromber?
Speaker 15 (01:19:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 19 (01:19:56):
Whatever you've got to think of him? Stuff about the
last the last you start lately, shut his bum mats.
Speaker 15 (01:20:01):
Up, citil bum ass up?
Speaker 20 (01:20:03):
Man?
Speaker 9 (01:20:03):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:20:04):
Romber hate real, I get it. Bonnie Joe my friend
on seven ninety Bonnie, what's the matter with you?
Speaker 20 (01:20:10):
Hey?
Speaker 21 (01:20:10):
Hey hey, uh yeah, So I'm a huge Cowboys fan
and I get tired of all these people who hate
the Cowboys, that think that we think as Cowboy fans,
we're going back to the super Bowl every year. Most
of us that are real cowboy fans know that until
Jerry Jones is gone, we have no chance of going
(01:20:30):
to the super Bowl. So I tell all those cowboy
fan haters to shut their bum ass up.
Speaker 2 (01:20:38):
Citil bum ass up, man, Bonnie, Let's go get some
hash bron Castle at Rockerel once you get there together,
all right, Last, but not least, our buddy Brad is
with us at eleven fifty nine. Brad, what's the matter
with you?
Speaker 20 (01:20:51):
Shout out to James and Gardeners. But I want to
ask you something real quick, Matt, how do you think
you compare yourself to Jody Mack? I think he's like
the best talk shows sports host of all time? How
do you think you compare yourself? And then I'll I'll
do my shout out, my shout out.
Speaker 5 (01:21:11):
What's the matter with me?
Speaker 1 (01:21:12):
Yo?
Speaker 20 (01:21:13):
Your sidekick Ross has treated me like crap since that
one incident at one of your I don't remember what
it was, but he don't let me come in on
the tenth inning shows.
Speaker 17 (01:21:27):
He blocks me.
Speaker 20 (01:21:28):
But when you're there, he backs off, but he still
talks his smack. He's a very negative guy. He will
never get his own show until he takes his negativity.
I have never done anything wrong to the man, but
I want to just call in and tell you shut
your bumbus up.
Speaker 2 (01:21:47):
Ross. Is the mac Thomas Show with Ross next drastic
measures here on the Matt Thomas Show. Would Ross to
(01:22:07):
be able to play a Taylor Swift song when it
comes to the Astros. But yes, the Astros must shake
it off because their lead in the American League West
still is at one and a half games. It is
our number three of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
Ross with a few days off, I'm met with you
until two o'clock today. Adam Amin from Fox Sports with
(01:22:29):
Us coming up at to twelve thirty. He will be
on the call tonight's game for the Astros against the
Orioles at till one o'clock. It is the season debut
of Doctor Roto. We did Ross give you Doctor Rondo's
intro music? By the way, Jonathan, what's that one?
Speaker 12 (01:22:45):
Do we know?
Speaker 2 (01:22:46):
What the did you find the intro music for?
Speaker 12 (01:22:48):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:22:48):
Doctor Rodo? Yeah? Yeah, I got I got to read
for one good I'm excited man. That's his music to
one Man's Ears right there. So we've got that for
you coming up in about fifty minutes from now. All right,
time now and tota wait for the news SAT noon.
All right, Astros are gonna try to snap this losing
skid after losing the three games in Detroit, and you'll
(01:23:13):
have Astros baseball. I'm deck will be at five o'clock
today and the pitching matchup Brandon Young, who nearly perfect
game the Astros last time around. We'll go against Jason Alexander.
The Astros are at sixty nine and fifty eight, still
that game and a half lead. In the American League West,
the Astros have lost four in a row. The Mariners
(01:23:34):
have dropped five in a row. And by the way,
he shout out to you, C J. Stroud. Since waring
that Seattle cap on Saturday before the game against the Panthers,
the Mariners have not won a game Texas. By the way,
losing last night is actually they beat Kansas City last night.
There within six and a half of the Astros in
(01:23:54):
the American League West have brought this up. The Yankees
have hit fourteen home runs in the last two games.
Beat again Tampa last night in Tampa. They're starting to
move up the slate when it comes to being the
number one wald card. Toronto still holds the advantage in
the American League East. Other news, Texans are on the
practice field today in Detroit. They're playing in an organized
(01:24:17):
team workout with the Lions. They'll have a rest day tomorrow,
and then they'll close out the regular season on Saturday
with a game against the Detroit Lions. I will not
expect any of the mainstay starters to get much of
any playing time, and that would include C. J. Stroud.
Josh Allen's gonna set out the entire preseason for the
first time. The Buffalo Bills announced that he will not
(01:24:37):
play in a third preseason game, and Lamar Jackson was
out of our practice today, leaving practice a day early
and did not practice today again. Thought of him probably
playing in the final preseason game as little or nothing
at all, and as far as one more thing on
the Houston Texans are concerned. If you've got a Jimmy
Warren jersey, you might want to get rid of it.
(01:24:58):
He has been sued while the woman he allegedly assaulted
a lawsuit filed in Harris County District Court yesterday, saying quote,
she was violently assaulted multiple times sexually and physically by Ward,
including the presence of their three year old son. She
is seeking more than twenty million dollars in damages or
(01:25:18):
attorney is Tony Busby out. I will refrain from any
comment on that, but again, Jimmy Ward now facing a
twenty million dollar domestic violence civil suit, and that, my friends,
is the news of him all right? Seven one three
two one two five seven nine zero seven one three
(01:25:39):
two one two five seven ninety Are you amazed? Dismayed?
Is it incredulous to you the Astros have a one
and a half game lead. For as bad as things
have gone for the Astros, For the way that Fropper
gave up five runs into first inning, had took him
(01:25:59):
forever to courted out, for the Astros offense to do
nothing in Detroit except for the two let run home
run from Mauricio Dubon yesterday, it has been a lack
of offense. And said the very least, and you're saying
to yourself, well, at least the softer part of the
schedules coming up, and in theory it is think about
this game four with Baltimore, three with Colorado, three with
(01:26:26):
the Angels. If there's any time for the Astros, even
with the dog days of summer, even though they're still
missing out on their favorite power sloganing hitter and Jordon
Alverroz is supposed to play again today for Corpus Christine,
this would be the time. Because here's the reality of it.
(01:26:46):
The Astros after today are mentioned the series coming up.
The Mariners mean Wall tomorrow start a three game series
at home against the A's, who suck. That's problem number one.
After that, though, the Astros will watch the Mariners play
the San Diego Podreys in Seattle. Now, Seattle's really good
(01:27:09):
at home, but the Podres are winning the American League West.
And then after that, the Mariners will have another series
coming up to wrap up their home series and they
will be on the road at Cleveland. Actually, they're gonna
go on the road. So this has to be the
time because if the Astros can't expand their lead more
(01:27:30):
than what it is right now in a game and
a half, how the hell they're gonna hold on it.
In September when you've got the Yankees and the Rangers
in Seattle coming up. This has to be, as I
like to say, the fat and happy time for the
local nine. Four with Baltimore, three with Colorado, three with
the Angels. If the Astros cannot expand their lead or
at any point lose it, it's gonna be a very
(01:27:51):
dicey month of September in a very unsettled at Houston
fan base, because I can already tell you've been very
unsettled with the way the team's played, and for obviously
for good reasons. Twelve thirteen and The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross will take some more phone calls and we'll
talk to Adam Amina Fox Sports at the bottom of
the hour with Doctor Rode at one o'clock here on
Sports Talk seven ninety eight seven one three two one
(01:28:13):
two five seven nine zero seven one three two one
two five seven ninety If you want to jump into
the conversation, Adam Aman's going to join the program coming
up in just a little bit. Adam Aman is the
talented broadcaster of the Fox Game of the Week, and
he will be with us to discuss things because he
is going to call the Astros game against the Orioles tonight,
(01:28:37):
which you'll see on channel twenty six locally. Of course,
the radio call right here on Sports Talk seven ninety
so again looking forward to Adam, I mean joining is
Adams also uh does NFL on Fox and we'll be
doing the Chicago Bulls games again on TV for their
regional TV network seven one three, two one two five
seven ninety stun is at twelve twenty one, stunn of
(01:28:59):
what do you got to day?
Speaker 8 (01:29:01):
What's going on? Man? Hi?
Speaker 19 (01:29:03):
Hey man? We we got to get us a slump buster. Man, yo,
we we we got to get us a slum buster.
Speaker 2 (01:29:11):
All right, stop what you're doing right there? Hold up?
Hold up, because everybody knows what stump stump slump buster is.
I would like for you stun it because you're a
responsible man in the streets of Houston. Give us two
or three candidates for slump busting. What you got?
Speaker 19 (01:29:33):
Oh that's one in my book?
Speaker 2 (01:29:38):
Who is that again?
Speaker 19 (01:29:43):
Tramp?
Speaker 2 (01:29:45):
Yeah, I'm I'm listening a little bit. Are you there? Okay,
I'll make sure you're there. Yeah, okay, tell me again.
Who's your slump buster? What's just going on? I don't know.
I think he's getting in and out there. All right,
(01:30:08):
We'll let you go because it sounds like we're losing
connection there, poor Sonna. Do you know what a slump
buster is? Jonathan No. Mark Grace was a former first
baseman for the Cubs and the Diamondbacks way back in
the day, said when you're on a long losing streak,
or you haven't had a lot of hits or something,
(01:30:30):
you should just go find a rando to have relations with,
aka slumpbuster, like to relieve yourself. Yeah, yeah, to release
the release the tension.
Speaker 11 (01:30:45):
That's like that movie Durham. Uh that baseball movie, Gould Durham.
You mean, yeah, yeah, it's kind of like that, Huh.
Speaker 2 (01:30:55):
I mean sort of. But see the problem is Susan
Sara's character she found one guy every year and she
hooked up with him. He wasn't necessarily going for a
slump He just he wanted to find a cougar and
he got one. I'm trying to think what is Yeah.
I don't mean to get too blue on the audience
(01:31:16):
here a little bit, but I think, you know, yeah, yeah,
how do I explain this to my to my young friend.
I'll do it this way. Let's just say you had
a long term relationship with a girl and you broke up,
(01:31:37):
and you're really downtrodden, and you're sad and you're depressed,
and you just want to uh, how do I say this?
You want to get back in the in the game
a little bit. You want to get back in the
game just a little bit. So that's what you do.
You don't necessarily looking for a relationship. You're not looking
(01:31:58):
for a ten. It'll be said, I was a three
or four. Now I know somebody that's gonna be here
to help me move this. This is a man who's
gotten a few slump busters in his day. Hi, Brian,
you're on seven ninety.
Speaker 17 (01:32:07):
Good afternoon, Hey Matt, Hey Jonathan, longtime caller for our
longtime listener, first time caller.
Speaker 2 (01:32:14):
How we doing today? Liar you called several times? Shut up?
Speaker 17 (01:32:19):
Hey, Look you said slump busters are a rando. That's
that's partially true.
Speaker 2 (01:32:24):
Oh oh, but if you.
Speaker 17 (01:32:25):
Really want to if you really want to go get
out of your slump, you gotta go get a big one,
a big slump buster, if you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:32:33):
Well, you know, you know, I thought you were gonna say, Brian,
is you're gonna call an old girlfriend of yours. That's
what I thought you were gonna say.
Speaker 17 (01:32:38):
No, No, that'll put you in a worse slump.
Speaker 8 (01:32:41):
No, absolutely not.
Speaker 17 (01:32:42):
You don't call your ex, you call you go find
yourself a big, a fit girl, if you will, respectfully,
and if you really want that, there's a you know,
a couple of good spots on the north Side for
those no free pop on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (01:32:57):
Though not at all. You get that right, Yeah, So.
Speaker 17 (01:33:00):
There's a country bar on the north Side you can
you can find you a couple of slump busters on
a Wednesday night or maybe a Saturday night. I don't know,
can't confirm nor deny that I've ever been there.
Speaker 2 (01:33:09):
But okay, no soup, Let's let's make let's make this
about your friend and out about you, because Brian, you are,
you are a man about the town, and you have
friends that have had issues before and you're looking for
that slump busting. So we're just saying thick, right, We're
not necessarily fat correct, just thick, uh, you know, if you.
Speaker 17 (01:33:30):
Really want to, if you're struggling, or if you're let's say,
you know, left hand a picture for the Astros I'm
not going to say any names from or Valdez. You
don't get you a fat girl? M yeah, do you
really want to get that slump? You go get you
a big one.
Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
All right? Thank you, Brian, and uh tell tell all
your friends on Facebook, we sent our best.
Speaker 20 (01:33:50):
Uh.
Speaker 17 (01:33:50):
Let's let's do us all a favor and and stop
posting our first day of school pictures when you're little
Johnny's going into third grade.
Speaker 25 (01:33:57):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:33:59):
He's messed up for that, he's messed up. Gil. What
can we do for you today?
Speaker 8 (01:34:04):
Gil?
Speaker 2 (01:34:04):
Thank you for calling.
Speaker 5 (01:34:05):
He's stole much under.
Speaker 4 (01:34:07):
I was gonna say, Charles Bumpy would say, go to
San Antonio and get you a big one.
Speaker 5 (01:34:13):
You know they got some big, big girls over there.
Speaker 2 (01:34:16):
So if you want to.
Speaker 4 (01:34:16):
Get out of that stuff that he eats much under.
Speaker 2 (01:34:19):
All right, So apparently there's a North Houston Country Bar
in Santa the entire Santa City of San Antonio can
help you with that.
Speaker 14 (01:34:27):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:34:28):
That seems fair.
Speaker 12 (01:34:30):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:34:30):
Before we get to Adam A mean Joe's with us
at twelve twenty six high Joe.
Speaker 10 (01:34:35):
He from Sunbusters to Batchicks real quick. I love it.
Yeah anyway, Hey, Hey, so I know It's tough watching
this Astros team right now, man, you know, but I
still appreciate it. You know how hard it's got to
be to be a Seattle Marinders fan.
Speaker 2 (01:34:52):
Oh, now, not make the.
Speaker 10 (01:34:54):
Playoffs for twenty years than they do that he gets
swept by the Astros. Then they almost catch us last
year and they don't, and then yeah, then this time
they can't even get out of their own way and
we're like a businally bad though, I still appreciate for
what we have. A lot better baseball here because it's spoiled,
but you know, so happy with what we got here.
But I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 2 (01:35:11):
Great job, Amen, Joe, Thank you, Joe. Thanks for the
phone call. Yeah, remember everybody, as bad as things have been,
your squad is still a game and a half in front.
Let's talk to our friend Adam Amane of Fox Sports.
He's on the call tonight's Astros Oriels game. You'll hear
from him next twelve twenty seven on Sports Talk seven
ninety A very underrated sports theme for a television network.
(01:35:39):
It's Baseball Night in America and tonight's on channel twenty six.
You will see one of the nation's finest broadcasters. Now
he does primarily NFC games because he works for Fox
on the NFL Sunday, But when he ever does a
Texans game, Adam mean's gonna be with us for like
(01:36:00):
two hours in the show. Adam, how the hell are you.
Speaker 24 (01:36:04):
Very much looking forward.
Speaker 12 (01:36:05):
To finally doing a Texans game and getting to sit
down with you for two hours?
Speaker 2 (01:36:09):
I know it's kind of way. You are the television
voice of the Chicago Bulls. You are on Baseball Night
in America tonight for the Astros against the Orils, and
of course every Sunday you can see them on Fox
NFL Sunday. Adam, I gotta be honest with you. You're
running into a game. If you saw this game on
your schedule back in April, you're probably thinking, okay, Astros
Oriols might be a potential ALCS matchup down the road.
(01:36:33):
Oriols have fired everybody, they've traded off players. They're playing
okay since they're terrible first two months. Meanwhile, the Astros
don't score runs anymore. So kind of a not what
you thought was going to be matchup when you first
got your schedule.
Speaker 12 (01:36:46):
Yeah, I didn't think we would run into the Astros.
In a week where they've scored what twelve runs and
have given up more than fifty. I did not think
that that was going to be the case. But I
also didn't think this would be an Astros team that
would have Carlos Korea. And I could go back into
my twenty twenty three notes to learn you remember everything
I had about him the last time we saw Korea
when he was playing for the Twins. So it's a
(01:37:06):
very different looking Astros team that I was expecting. It
is a significantly different Baltimore team that I was expecting.
I know, I don't know what to think about the Orioles,
but I still feel very kind everybody we run into
during our travels who talk about the Astros. It's the
old model of consistency. And this is one of those
(01:37:29):
rare times that I've hopped into Houston, into a Houston
game and thought, this is not like the Astros I'm
used to seeing. So, yeah, in April, this is not
what I would have.
Speaker 2 (01:37:38):
Expected to be seeing.
Speaker 12 (01:37:39):
But it's got weight to it, right, this is a
game that's got.
Speaker 2 (01:37:41):
Some impact to it for Houston. Obviously. Yeah, with the
game and a half late game lead, especially with Seattle
not winning any games as well, so that's been a
good sign. Let me ask you this from a national perspective,
because you do get a chance to do different call
different games. And one of the complaints from my audience
is when an ESPN or a Apple will come is
that the cheating scandal comes into play almost every single
(01:38:03):
national broadcast, and there is a fair amount of resentment
for it. Not that the city Houston, Adam knows what
the Astros did, but it's almost like a situation of
how many times are we going to hear this? And
I don't think you wouldever intentionally do it, but I
just think when someone comes in and doesn't see a
team a whole lot, it's a narrative that comes into play.
What is your general thought now that we are, you know,
(01:38:25):
eight years removed from that, and does it ever get
up in conversations when you're sitting down at a production
meeting saying, Hey, do we bring up correas yesteryear? Do
we bring up the fact that l zl Tuova still
gets booed everywhere he goes and plays.
Speaker 12 (01:38:39):
I think that's the reason behind it, is the booing,
because it's impossible not to associate those things right, And
I think for most audiences, again, we are calling games
for a national audience, which means essentially we're calling them
for both sides. Imagine, if you know, I get to
imagine this because I'm the local guy for a team
(01:38:59):
in the NBA, as you mentioned, so I hear it
on the rare occasions, and those occasions are rarer and
rarer for the Chicago Bulls to be on national TV.
But I think the occasions where the Bulls are on
national TV, you know, we get tweets Stacey King and
I my partner, who are like, oh, these guys don't
know this about this team, or they're always talking about
the other team or their biased and I'm like, no,
(01:39:21):
that's Dave Pash. He's a good friend of mine who's
really good at his job and called me two days
ago to ask me about the Bulls, Like he knows
what he's doing, he knows what he's talking about. I
think it's little things that start to connect, and I
understand where a local audience would get frustrated by it.
But if you're calling games for the national side and
suddenly you're hearing fans boo jose l tuove, it's impossible
(01:39:45):
not to mention it because it's coming through on your TV,
and if we've learned anything on the national TV side,
I think baseball is an exception to this in a
lot of ways, not fully, but it is an exception
in a lot of ways. Most sports that we cover nationally,
fans don't know much about the teams. And I want
to believe that fans know so much more than they
(01:40:08):
ever have, and that's true, but it's only a certain
percentage of fans. Most people that are tuning in and
flipping through their channels and landing on a Fox Baseball
game or a ESPN NBA game or whatever it may be,
whatever the case ends up being a Fox NFL game,
Like we're we're really introducing a lot of things to
fans who are watching this casually. So I think that's
(01:40:29):
why the natural tendency is to just explain the most
basic concept. But I have been in production meetings and
we covered the Astros a couple of years ago in
the playoffs against Minnesota in that series, and I remember saying, like,
I don't really feel like we got to talk about it.
It's not going to be a subject. And I think
the only time we mentioned it is when the Astros
were about to clinch the series. I think it was
(01:40:52):
like the seventh inning or something like that. It's like,
you know, just as kind of a roller coaster of
the last at that point, six or seven years, like,
it is further and further away. But I went to
a Toronto White Sox game earlier this year and fans
are still booing George Springer, like one dude. And it's
a light crowd in Chicago, but one dude is still
(01:41:13):
booing George Springer and you can hear it throughout the ballpark.
So for certain fans it does still mean something. I
don't know how much it means, how much of the
vitriol is real and how much of it is manufactured.
I'd probably lean much further towards manufactured at this point.
It is something that I got tired of talking about.
(01:41:34):
I can't really imagine a scenario where we might talk
about it tonight other than Correa and al Tuve getting
booed by Baltimore fans when they show up to hit.
That's probably the only connectivity we would feel. And if
it's drastic, yeah, I probably would have to mention it.
But it's not something that I'm going to go. Let
me go into my notes and deep dive the twenty seventeen.
(01:41:55):
How many times can I mention Jeff Luno in this
like that's not what I want to do, That's not
what I care to do. But I think that's the
general thinking about this stuff. And I know that was
a long answer, map No, it was.
Speaker 2 (01:42:06):
It was very thoughtful and I think people and I'm
gonna just talk to my audence here directly. Do you
guys understand that. I think that makes a lot of sense.
And so I just felt like it was needed to
be asked. And Adam is so talented and thoughtful that
I knew you'd give it the responsible answer on that, Adam,
I mean Fox Sports. He'll be doing the Baseball Night
in the American Game tonight, Astros and the Oros. You'll
see him on Fox NFL Sunday. And you're also, and
(01:42:28):
I didn't even know this, you're quite a DJ, Am,
I correct on this.
Speaker 12 (01:42:33):
I guess your mileage may vary, but yes, I do
perform as DJ in Chicago in various other places.
Speaker 2 (01:42:40):
Yeah, so do they ever go, You're at this club
and you do this, and like, wait a minute, I
just saw him call a game against the Bucks two
hours ago. Is that is that how it turns out
your life or what what's going on with that?
Speaker 12 (01:42:52):
Well, you know, oddly enough. So for some background, when
I was thirteen, my brother bought me a para turn
tables and a mixer. And I'm from Chicago, the birthplace
of house music, so it was just something that was
part of your childhood, honestly, growing up either in the
city or in the suburbs. And I loved the music
so much that I started DJing and then that became
(01:43:12):
a profession of mine up until the point I got
hired at ESPN. But I was twenty four. That was
fourteen years ago, so I just stopped doing it. It's
a creative thing that I really enjoyed doing, and I
think house music I've been reading more about this is
like one of the fastest growing music genres in the world.
Speaker 17 (01:43:28):
Kids that are going to college.
Speaker 12 (01:43:30):
Or in college now are listening to like remixes of
the songs that I used to listen to when I
was a teenager. And maybe this just makes me sound
super old, but it felt really good that there was
some connectivity there. I got back into DJing a couple
of years ago, and then this year one of the
fun events. We had a Cubs Red Sox game in
July for Fox on a Saturday night in Chicago, and
(01:43:52):
one of my buddies is a DJ at one of
the clubs down the street. He asked me to play
a set after the game, and gets who came along?
Aj Perzinski and Ken Rosenthal, sixty two year old venerable
baseball reporter with a bunch of Emmys and awards on
his mantle. Ken Rosenthal came out to a club in
Chicago stand on stage with me while I DJ during,
(01:44:14):
you know, after a Cubs game. So that's that's the
type of stuff that once in a while we get
to do and people do kind of look at me
on and go, aren't you the didn't you just do
the So we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (01:44:24):
I'm doing it tomorrow.
Speaker 12 (01:44:25):
We've got We've got Bears Chiefs tomorrow night in Kansas
City and then I'm DJing at a club in Kansas
City tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:44:31):
Are you a better DJ than Kenny Albert? I think so.
Speaker 12 (01:44:37):
I don't know if I want to necessarily challenge him,
but I'd like to believe that I can do this.
Speaker 2 (01:44:43):
Think I think he I think he's got six games
to call tomorrow. I didn't want to have time to
djay anything. The very talent that feel.
Speaker 12 (01:44:50):
The reason if he were if he did have time,
he probably would end up being better than me anyway,
because he was just the most versatile dude on the planet.
Speaker 2 (01:44:56):
That's awesome, Adam A meaning with us here from Fox Sports. Uh,
you as a football broadcaster, you get a chance to
visit with teams the day before. You get to low
little intricacies about not necessarily play calls with strategies. Do
you get that on the baseball side or to or
is it just because it's such a daily grind that
you're not gonna be able to get a whole lot
of that inside dirt that you would potentially get on
(01:45:18):
a Saturday before a Sunday football game.
Speaker 12 (01:45:21):
Usually it's a little bit more nuanced stuff and it
often just relates to the starting pitcher and it's like,
you know, today we might go in and say, well,
what is Brandon Young? What did Brandon Young do well
against you guys the other day that you know you're
looking to attack, or what's stuck out on Saturday? You
know that's a question we might ask to Joe. You know,
we might go into Tony Mandelino's office and say, how
(01:45:41):
do you attack, you know, hit her X hit or why.
I think it's it's a little bit less about strategy,
and because because of the day to day grind of it,
and so much happens in terms of variables in the
first now like five innings of a game, and you're
really getting into this a lot faster because it's not
like fifteen years ago even where you'd go, all right, well,
(01:46:03):
we got our number two pitcher going, so I'm expecting
to throw him for seven innings today or six innings today.
The wheels have to start moving so much earlier that
it's impossible to predict for managers when they're going to
start making moves.
Speaker 8 (01:46:17):
I think we ask.
Speaker 12 (01:46:18):
About tendencies, we ask about recent successes, we ask about development,
and I think that's a little bit different on the
football side, where we are going in and saying this
is the matchup you're playing Minnesota. You're a defensive coordinator
and you're preparing for Justin Jefferson. And by the way,
the answers for a lot of those defensive coordinators often
end up being the same thing. Well, we've got this
(01:46:40):
coverage for this, got this coverage in these down and distances,
but guess what, he beats it anyway. So that's when
you hear the cliched stuff. It's a matter of execution.
We have to execute better basically just meeting. My guy
has to be better than yours. My guy has to
have a better step than yours. He has to think
one step ahead than the other guy, and he's got
to jump around and guess what, fifty percent of the time,
(01:47:00):
he's probably gonna get beat over the top. Like That's
that's how a lot of the candid coaches in the
NFL will tell you, And I think that's where we lean.
We lean more towards like specific strategy for that day,
whereas the day to day grind of baseball does have
certain things that you can talk about because of the
starting pitchers and some tendencies and maybe who's available and
(01:47:21):
who's not in a bullpen, and we kind of have
to put our put the puzzle together as the game
goes on in baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:47:27):
So we're gonna get probably at least four to five
seinfol references for Jason Alexander Tonn. Does that feel fair?
Speaker 12 (01:47:33):
We got to think about how many we can we
can muscle in.
Speaker 8 (01:47:36):
Here's the other thing though, too.
Speaker 12 (01:47:38):
I'm watching The Marvelous Missus Masel right now. I don't
know if you've ever seen that show. I am a
My girlfriend turned me on to it. I'm a huge
stand up comedy nerd, so she turned me out of
the show, and I'm like, this is a great show.
Jason Alexander plays a small role in the show. So,
like I keep forgetting the man has ranged. I don't
want to just pigeonhole him into Seinfeld. That's the one
(01:47:59):
thing I gotta keep in mind.
Speaker 2 (01:48:01):
Last question for you live in Chicago. Kyle Tucker is
a former Houston astro. He's been wearing it the last
week or so. What's going on with him on the
North Side right now?
Speaker 12 (01:48:09):
Well, there's a I think I read some potential injury issues.
Over the course of this last month, he's been playing
through some injury. The offense just hasn't been there as
of late. Yeah, fractured hand. I guess fractured right hand
in June and he'd been playing through it for the
last month plus. So you can tell that the offense
had kind of tailed off. He'd been great even when
(01:48:31):
I saw him in July, but I think it's probably
starting to become more and more of a factor. And listen,
the Cubs have hit a skid that many teams do. Again,
the Astros may be a team that can sympathize right
now where your best hitters, who have had a track record,
whether a shorter or long, of being relatively consistent and
relatively productive, just have hit a slump, all at the
incorrect time and all at right around the same time.
(01:48:54):
And the guys that are getting on base aren't getting
driven in. And that's been a prolonged issue now for
the better part of a month.
Speaker 8 (01:49:00):
And during this time, look.
Speaker 12 (01:49:01):
At the Milwaukee Brewers. They've just bulleted their way in
the first place. I know, the Cubs won the last
couple of games and what is a very important series,
but the whole talk in Chicago all year, all year
has been got to sign, got to resign Tucker, got
to resign Tucker. And my general thought was, I don't
know if the Cubs front office as a track record
of actually pulling the trigger and making the move, not
(01:49:24):
necessarily if they don't want Kyle Tucker but are they
willing to pay upwards of around four to maybe five
hundred million dollars for a long term contract for him.
I was never convinced of it. Now you're really going
to get people with Milwaukee surging the way they have,
the Cubs flirting with more of a wild card slot
than than anything else. And again, anything can happened in
this last stretch forty games or whatever it is. But
(01:49:45):
I still feel like the Cubs front office hasn't shown
the track record to resign Kyle Tucker. And my gut
feeling at the beginning of the year, my gut feeling
towards the end of this year is probably going to
be the same where I would imagine Kyle Tucker is
going to test the market, not the same, won't come
back to Chicago, but I think he's gonna end up
testing the market.
Speaker 2 (01:50:01):
All Right, I've kept you too long, but I'll give
I give you the last question on this. Who is
your gut feel feeling now that you can change your mind.
Who's won in the America League. It looks really wide
open right now, it does.
Speaker 12 (01:50:12):
It looks tremendously wide open. And I at various times
this year I've said, the Yankees, the Astros, and the
Tigers all have a shot. If the Astros are healthy
in a month. I feel really good about Houston, I
really do. If they have your don Albarez, if they
have you know, Jake Myers back, if they get some
reinforcements for their offense, I don't I think this is
(01:50:33):
a bad slump. I don't panic when it comes to
the Astros. I rarely ever have.
Speaker 2 (01:50:39):
I think the.
Speaker 12 (01:50:39):
Yankees are still very talented. Same deal, their reinforcements need
to get back. Judge isn't fully healthy yet dealing with
the elbow. Stanton had been in and out of the
lineup for most of the year. I still feel good
about Detroit. I know the Astros just saw him. I
know it was a rough series, but Detroit hit a
skid a few weeks ago. I think I still lean
mostly towards Detroit. In a big series, I still lean
(01:51:03):
again lean towards Houston. I God, it's really hard to choose.
It's really hard to choose because it's been such a
mishmash in the American League this year. But yeah, I
think Detroit and Houston are the two teams I'm leaning towards.
Speaker 2 (01:51:16):
Well, I've called your Fox bosses and I've demanded you
cover the American League Division Series and the Astros and whomever.
So you're gonna be coming to Houston eventually. I just
want to take you that so thank you.
Speaker 12 (01:51:24):
You know, hey, that's a taxes my friend being in
Houston for the playoffs, and that's not a bad thing.
Speaker 2 (01:51:30):
And I'm buying you a very heavy meal unless you
can get Fox expensers. Either way, we're gonna have to dine.
And in the greatness, you got it, brother. Thanks Adam.
We'll talk to you soon. Thank you, Adam Amin Fox Sports.
He'll be on the call tonight for the Astros and
the Orioles. It is the Baseball Night in America broadcast.
You can catch it right here locally on channel twenty six,
and of course the radio call right here on Sports
(01:51:52):
Talk seven ninety. Doctor roto with us in fifteen short minutes.
It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We take
you till two o'clock today. Believe it or not. At
one fifty is highly googleable. It's about retired numbers in
the NBA seven one three, two, one two five seven
nine zero seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
Thanks again to Adam Amini. Such a good dude, everybody.
(01:52:15):
I just have gotten to know him a little bit
the last handful of years. He's very talented and just
a really decent guy. I mean, there are some of
these national guys that are so arrogant and just so
holier than now. He's salt of the earth. I hope
that you guys had a chance to enjoy that conversation.
Twelve fifty three Doctor Roto coming up in about seven minutes.
If you got any questions for doctor Rode, we'll do
(01:52:37):
that in the segment two of the one o'clock hour.
Let's talk to Jim and Georgetown at twelve fifty three.
Hi Jim, Hi.
Speaker 5 (01:52:44):
There, Hey, I was watched. I moved out from Houston
to Georgetown a little over.
Speaker 2 (01:52:51):
Speaker 25 (01:52:52):
Mm hmm, and uh, I've been suffering through not being
able to watch the astros M and the other the
other night had Detroit Astro's game on TBS. Yes, and
when I tuned that in, there was a notification that
they couldn't do it from some sort.
Speaker 5 (01:53:11):
Of regulatory thing.
Speaker 2 (01:53:15):
Yes.
Speaker 5 (01:53:16):
And I'm just wondering what's going on if.
Speaker 25 (01:53:21):
If the lawsuit that Crane settled had anything to do
with it.
Speaker 2 (01:53:25):
It does.
Speaker 5 (01:53:27):
It does the Rangers have territorial.
Speaker 2 (01:53:32):
Authority, No, Jim. It's unfortunately, it's very convoluted, and I
apologize for that because it makes absolutely no sense. It's
it's really a dumb thing. But let me tell you
in a nutshell what it is. You can get space
City Home Network on most cable providers and direct TV
okay in Austin. Now, I don't know. Do you have cable,
(01:53:54):
do you have satellite? What do you have?
Speaker 5 (01:53:56):
I have cable?
Speaker 2 (01:53:57):
Okay, does your cable provider does it offer Space City
Home Network?
Speaker 25 (01:54:03):
I have not ever looked for it, to be honest
with you, Well, since I did.
Speaker 5 (01:54:08):
You expected it like to be like Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:54:11):
Yeah, if you if your cave in the city in Austin,
you can get space City Home Network. If that is
the case. Major League Baseball protects its regional markets over
its national meaning that if Space City wasn't in Austin,
you could get the TBS version of the game. For instance,
(01:54:32):
people in Cincinnati could watch the Astros Tigers on TBS
because that's not a Space City Network. Yeah, it's the
affiliate that it's City if the game was in uh,
you know, people in Tampa or in Miami, or in
Cincinnati or Detroit, whoever, they can get it. But when
you have a game that's in a market that has
the cable channel that carries the games, you can't double
(01:54:55):
carry it.
Speaker 5 (01:54:59):
That is unvoloaded.
Speaker 2 (01:55:01):
It is very confluent, and I apologize it makes zero sense.
I think Major League Baseball will change that, but they're
what they're trying to protect is the ability to have
the Space City Home network folks broadcast the game and
not have any competition, which is chilling, especially for people
that don't live in the Greater I mean, I could
see that being out uh blocked out in Houston, but
(01:55:22):
to have it in Austin seems kind of ridiculous.
Speaker 5 (01:55:26):
It does, uh and yeah, and so I'm kind of
locked into I listened to the games on iHeartRadio, thank you,
and that's something, but it's not the same.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
I know now tonight the game is on channel. It
will be on your local Fox affiliate in Austin, so
you'll be able to see the game tonight on Fox.
Speaker 5 (01:55:46):
Okay down, all right, Oh, thank you, thank you?
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):
Yeah again. I wish it was better. I wish it didn't.
I wish you didn't have to do that. But remember,
if a city has Space City home network, it's going
to block it out. That's why, even though you would
think that there'd be more fan you know that Austin
and San Antonio and other cities wouldn't be subject to
a blackout like that. The city Houston would be probably
(01:56:12):
the only ones that should make any sense to do that.
They stretch it out to an entire region. Yeah, I wish,
And again I hope Baseball with this new TV deal
will allow a little more freedom for people outside of
the city limits to watch it, because again, it's not fair.
I don't even know if. I don't even think Beaumont
can since Beaumont's a Space City's city affiliate area, they
(01:56:34):
can't broadcast the game on their local Fox. They're on
TBS in Beaumont and Lake Charles. I don't even I mean,
I don't know how far Space City's Home network reaches,
but it's quite a bit in this area. It doesn't
make any sense. All right, let's get to doctor Road.
You guys ready for some fantasy football chatter, get away
from this astro sadness of the last handful of the days,
(01:56:55):
if Doctor Otal's gonna be with us, And again if
you want to get a question and for Doctor Row
on your fantasy football team, we'll get that coming up
in segment number two times.
Speaker 1 (01:57:07):
Jesus is the Matt Thomas Show with Rosso.
Speaker 2 (01:57:26):
Waiver claims have to be.
Speaker 26 (01:57:30):
Made and I've got trade proposals for ly in my way.
Speaker 2 (01:57:39):
My first round pick turned out to be a big flop.
Speaker 26 (01:57:45):
I don't know which wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (01:57:48):
I need to drive.
Speaker 26 (01:57:53):
Doctor roto give me the news. I really don't know
what I should do. My quarterback keeps getting sacked. I've
got a bad Keith on fair Deceive Blue.
Speaker 2 (01:58:09):
Wi. Goodness, Doctor Ronald's been with us so long. He's
put his kids through high school and college. I'm gonna
be a godfather to his son who's at Rice University.
Good Doctor Howard Thing and my friend longtime No Talk.
Speaker 8 (01:58:25):
It really feels that way, doesn't it. But every time
they hear the music, I'm ready.
Speaker 2 (01:58:28):
To go no other city and we give you here
on Sports Talk seven. Doctor Ronald's get right to it.
How many fantasy league drafts have you been in? And
how many more still to go?
Speaker 8 (01:58:42):
Oh? Great questions? So I've been in about fifty Best
Ball drafts, so those are just you pick a team
and then you don't make any moves. I've done about
six or so regular drafts, and I've got another ten
or so to come. I basically told my wife next week,
you're not seeing me at all after we come back
from Houston, and then probably the first week of the
(01:59:03):
in the season week, I'm gonna have another couple of drafts.
So we're going to be very busy here in the
Roto household.
Speaker 2 (01:59:08):
Good for you, Doctor rote with this, and he'll be
with us this year on Fridays. It works better for
a schedule where we want to make sure doctor Roto
is happy, so he'll be with us every Friday in
the one o'clock hour once the NFL regular season begins.
So let's like it is, I like to put quarterbacks
in new places. So let's go through two or three
of them that you think will flourish. In two or
(01:59:29):
three that you think will be a complete disaster.
Speaker 8 (01:59:31):
Now that we're in new gear, well, you know it's interesting.
So I think quarterback is obviously the deepest position in
fantasy And look, if you want to take Josh Allen
Lamar Jackson or Joe Burrow early on five with it,
and I think you can get really good value with
bo Nicks maybe in round nine, maybe a Drake may
in round ten or eleven, brock Purty you can get
(01:59:54):
late JJ McCarthy, Bryce Young you could probably get as
your second quarterback with the last pick in the so quarterback.
As you guys know, I always tell people wait on
your quarterbacks. I'll even tell you what if I told
you that, I think that Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville will
be so much better this year with Liam Cohen as
the coach versus Doug Peterson they gave up from week
(02:00:16):
two last season. So please, I'm begging you for you
listen to anything I've said on the show today. If
you're not taking Allan, you're not taking Lamar, wait on
your quarterback.
Speaker 2 (02:00:27):
I mean we're talking what six seventh round correct.
Speaker 8 (02:00:30):
Seven round to be perfect by Thick. By end of
round six, you probably have yourself two or three running
backs to you know, three or four receivers. Then you
want to take a quarterback, I'm fine at it. Do
you want to go get a Dak Prescott? You want
to go get a Baker Mayfield, I'll wait even longer empty.
I'll go to round nine. I'll even go to round eleven.
I did a draft recently. I took Drake May and
Bo Nix as my two quarterbacks. I'm thrilled.
Speaker 2 (02:00:52):
Mmm, good gracious. So you said Trevor Lawrence good season.
That's scary because you know we were just talking this
earlier on the Sho Show. Today, Jacksonville and I mean me,
Indianapolis and Tennessee looked to be hot messes. So it
might be a two team race. Although I think everybody
and their mother's got the Texans to win the division.
So what are you?
Speaker 8 (02:01:12):
What are you?
Speaker 2 (02:01:12):
What kind of number is you anticipating Trevor Lawrence having?
Speaker 8 (02:01:15):
Sure, Well, look, Trevor Lawrence still has a good arm,
he still has Brian Thomas Junior, who was terrific. They
added Travis Hunter, who's a weapon. They brought in this kid,
Baseel Tooton from Virginia Tech, who's explosive. Then, but the
big thing is the coaching change.
Speaker 2 (02:01:29):
Right.
Speaker 8 (02:01:30):
Coaches make a big difference. Look at what Cohen did
in Tampa last year. He was successful. He was successful
and he was with the Rams. Dave Kanal a same thing.
When this guy was in Seattle, he was good. When
he was in Tampa, he was good. Look at Caroline
at the end of last year, they were a lot better.
So we can't use last year's statistics for this year's assumptions.
(02:01:52):
I'm going to tell you Lawrence will be let's say,
thirty seven hundred yards, twenty three twenty four touchdowns, maybe
run for three hundred yards and three or four touchdowns.
I'm not saying that's a generational talent, but I'm saying
that might be no worse than brock Purty.
Speaker 2 (02:02:10):
Wow. Okay, all right with that being said, let's localizes
to the Houston side of things. Really good freshman campaign
for CJ Stroud. The numbers backed off last year. What
does your gut tell you about this year's overall numbers
for CJ.
Speaker 8 (02:02:24):
Look, I'm a big fan, I really am. I think
the problem that he had last year was all of
his receivers got injured and he had an offensive line
that didn't protect him. So, look, you've got these two
young future stars. I think Jayden Higgins and Jalen Noel
the future stars in this league. We need Nico Collins
to be healthy. Nico Collins of top seven eight receiver
in this league. And don't let Christian Kirk a solid
(02:02:45):
Christian Kirk is a good slot player. He's reliable. Now
the question is this, can Nick Chubb give them enough
of a running game and can the offensive line keep
Stroud on his feet because there were times last year,
don't you remember he looked very twitchy, had to get
rid of the ball quickly. He was panicking. He wasn't
taking his time and finding his receivers. If that happens,
(02:03:05):
Texans win this division by two three games minimum. That's
how good Stroud is. And I think Cave Stover is
one of the most underrated tight ends in the league
because he's bff with Stroud and I know Stroud wants
to find them.
Speaker 2 (02:03:18):
All right, why are you staying away from all of
the Texans running backs this year?
Speaker 8 (02:03:23):
Well, you know it's funny. I don't know how much
time Woody Marx will have. I can tell you Woody
Mars was a sensational running back in college in terms
of catching the ball. When he was at Mississippi State
in twenty twenty one, he had eighty three receptions. Okay,
then he goes to USC and had forty seven last year.
Are you telling me that Texans don't need a running
(02:03:45):
back to be receiving thread out of the backfield.
Speaker 19 (02:03:48):
I think they really do.
Speaker 8 (02:03:49):
So will they play Woody Marks? I hope they will.
If they do, I think this guy could be special.
I'm not touching Pierce Trubb. I don't trust. I mean,
he's okay, not the guy, and I'm gonna draft, but
I think Woody Mark's in a PPR. I love him
as one of my last picks.
Speaker 2 (02:04:05):
All right, if you got any questions for doctor Rotal,
get them in right now at seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero. Gut feeling on Aaron Rodgers
as the Pittsburgh Steeler.
Speaker 8 (02:04:20):
I think that the Steelers are going to play not
to lose. What do I mean by that? Let's play
some really good defense. Let's run the ball a lot,
Let's make good smart passes. That's why you bring in
a John news Smith. You throw the ball a little
bit to guys like Roman Wilson. Maybe you take one
or two shots a half with DK Metcalf. Now here's
(02:04:41):
a bigger question. How many games last year did Aaron
Rodgers throw for over one hundred yards, not many in
fact zero one. Excuse me one. That's why I expect
him to throw for over three hundred yards for the
Steelers this year. I really don't. So that's I think
he's just one of those guys who, you know, will
(02:05:01):
they make the playoffs? Yes? Could they win one game
in the playoffs? Maybe? Is Rogers going to be conservative
and do time of possession, you know, make sure that
keep the defense off the field, get a first down? Yes?
Is he the Aaron Rodgers years ago? No chance?
Speaker 2 (02:05:19):
All right, I want to go to a couple of
rookies here, if you don't mind, let's go with the
top two. First of all, note expects the Titans do much.
Cam Ward probably the least most heralded, at least Harold
I should say, rookie one dash one. A thought or
two about him so far, which you think could be
his twenty twenty five.
Speaker 8 (02:05:38):
Every time I watched this guy in an interview, I
like him more and more. He loves the game, He's
passionate about it. He's the first guy at the you know,
at the stadium, and he's the last guy to leave.
And I think that's how you become a leader, okay,
And I think that there's something that it's going to
take time. I don't know whether Bill Callahan O'Brian Callahan
(02:05:59):
excuse me as the guy to lead this franchise, but
I think cam Mood is a franchise quarterback. It's just
going to take them time. So if you're in a
super flex league and you want him as your second
or third quarterback, I have no problem with it. The
problem there is you've got Calvin Ridley, who's a number one,
and then you got a bunch of guys who are
like would be number fours or fives on another team.
So I like Tony Pollard, I like Ridley. Maybe a
(02:06:20):
Conquo is a late tight end, but Tyler Lockett he's done.
Van Jefferson stinks. I know Minor is a rookie out
of Stanford who's okay. He just don't have a lot
to help Ward with and that's the big issue.
Speaker 2 (02:06:32):
Two more rookies, then we'll start tickets and phone calls.
Do you stay away from Travis Hunter because he's going
to be playing some on the defensive side or perhaps
quite a bit. And then a thought about how impactful
Ashton gent is going to be for that Raiders offense.
Speaker 8 (02:06:47):
So look, Travis Hunter in the leagues right now could
be very powerful for people. Are people playing in leagues
where they're going to give them where you're going to
get defensive stats for him as well or just offensive stats.
There are some leagues that I'm familiar with. You're gonna
get pointers and his interceptions. So this guy really could
end up being a top player in fantasy. Let's just
assume you know, he plays no defense in he's only
(02:07:08):
playing offense. I still think he could probably get like
sixty receptions, maybe nine hundred yards, maybe six seven touchdowns.
I mean he's explosive. He's still learning the position. Ryan,
you got to learn it in the NFL. But I
mean the sky's the limit with a creative play caller
like Colin Now. In terms of Ashton Genty, I think
you know this by now. MT. I always have a
(02:07:28):
Rodo child, So every year, you know, missus Rodo and
I adopt somebody. So last year was Malik Neighbors Roto.
Over the years, Jamar Chase Rodo, Justin Jefferson. So I
try to find guys who I think are going to
be amazing talents. In this league. This year's Rodo child,
Ashton gent Rodo, don't knock this guy. This guy is
a first round Fantasy talent. I'm thinking fifteen hundred yards
(02:07:52):
from scrimmage. I'm thinking ten touchdowns. I'm thinking thirty to
forty receptions. I'm thinking if I'm picking eight, nine or ten,
Ashton Genti is one of the guys I'm thinking about.
Speaker 2 (02:08:03):
All right, there you have it. Now your opportunity. Any
questions about receivers, tight ends, quarterbacks, defense, if you want
to get it in. You've not had your draft yet.
Doctor Roto wants to help you out. Seven one three two,
one two five seven ninety seven one three, two, one
two five seven ninety Your questions up for Doctor Rodo.
Next one fourteen, It's a Matt Thomas show with Ross
(02:08:25):
here on Sports Talk seven Ninetytas take it. Oh my gosh,
sharing this song and Doctor Roto, Oh my god, the
next thing is gonna happen. The weather's gonna change, and
we're gonna have football.
Speaker 15 (02:08:41):
Baby.
Speaker 2 (02:08:42):
The one and only Doctor Rode with us here on
Sports Talk seven ninety Again. Doctor Rode would with us
every Friday and maybe except like Thanksgiving week will be early,
but every Friday during the regular season for the most part,
one o'clock one thirty for a full half hour. Let's
start talking to the great people and John, let's go
with Caso Online number four. First up for doctor Roto.
(02:09:03):
What's the girl word? Caso?
Speaker 27 (02:09:06):
Good to hear from you, guys, Roto quick question. I
went Barkley and Jackson in back to background, so that
left me my wide receiver position kind of sin with
Drake London and Courtland Sutton. Are we expecting anything from
that year? And one quick one is I also picked
up Matthew Golden. Is at any shot about starting him?
Speaker 8 (02:09:25):
Thanks? Yeah, I mean, look, it's funny because I would
tell you immediately I didn't love the way you started
your draft. But Drake London in dress and I'm going in.
He's going literally around pick twelve to fourteen. Right, high
stakes guys love Drake London. And when I say high stakes,
people are paying too much money to be in fantasy leagues.
So Drake London is a great player. He's a true
(02:09:47):
wide receiver one. And who is even the wide receiver
two on that team? Mooney's Hurt, Ray, Ray McLeod, Kyle Pitts,
no thanks. Cortland Sutton is another true wide receiver. One
they just traded Vele. They've got the in your kid Franklin.
They've got Marvin Mims, who's still trying to figure it out.
They brought drafted Pat Bryant, so I think he did great.
I think you have yourself a great quarterback. You got
(02:10:09):
yourself a stud running back and two receivers. Matthew Golden
I think is going to be really good. They brought
him in as their number one to be their number
one receiver. I'm a bigger fan of Golden than I
am of Jayden Reid. Jayden Reid is great against zone coverage,
stinks against man coverage. Matthew Golden is very good against
man coverage. And I think he'll have a pretty decent
(02:10:29):
rookie year.
Speaker 2 (02:10:30):
Rodos, Are there any rookies we stay away from?
Speaker 8 (02:10:35):
Any rookies to stay away from? I mean, do I
You have to look for situations. So for example, Amika
Igbuka is in a great situation right. Jalen McMillan is
out for nine reads. Chris Godwin's not healthy. He's in
a great spot. Jalen Noel is not in a great spot.
He's buried on the depth charts. So when you look
at rookies, look at opportunity. Tyler Laarrene great opportunity to
(02:10:56):
be the tight end one in Indianapolis, Omarion Hanton going
to be the RB one for the Chargers, Trayvon Henderson
going to be a twenty touch guy for the Patriots.
So rookies start, could start slowly. They could do well
if they're playing early on, but most rookies, like, for example,
Caleb Johnson, I'm worried about him in Pittsburgh because it
(02:11:18):
doesn't pass protect very well, and if you don't protect
Aaron Rodgers, you're not playing. So watch those depth charts.
Speaker 2 (02:11:25):
All right, Let's go to line two and talk to
Reese on seven Hunty for the good doctor.
Speaker 28 (02:11:30):
Hi Reese, Hey, so I think he may have already
answered my questions. But I'm in a deep keeper league,
and unfortunately we're picking first. I was just wondering should
we pick We're obviously going with Gentry, but I was
wondering if we shouldn't be overlooking a guy like Henderson.
And then we pick eleventh also, and I was wondering
(02:11:50):
if there's any who are your top five receiver.
Speaker 5 (02:11:53):
Rookie wide receivers would be Yeah.
Speaker 8 (02:11:56):
I think you take gent One and a keeper leak.
Now I would have told you Henderson might have been
there for you, but not after the preseason he's had.
He's looked so good in training camp in preseason. I
wish he'd be there for eleven for you. I'm not
sure he is. I love it, Buka, love that kid.
I like Matthew Golden, I do. I like Tyler Warren.
I think he's going to be good to TROYA. McMillan
for Carolina is another fantastic player. They like Luthi Burden
(02:12:19):
a ton in Chicago. I think you could take an
opportunity Scataboo for the Giants. Maybe interesting quin Shawn Judkins
if he can. You know now that he's not going
to be charged for something. This guy's got a lot
of talent. So this is not the deepest of drafts, right,
This is not a great rookie draft. If you're in
one of those leagues, maybe you could trade out of
(02:12:40):
that eleven pick and get some picks for next year
or the year after, because twenty twenty six and twenty
twenty seven are really good.
Speaker 2 (02:12:47):
Georgie Pickens and Dallas. What'd you thinking?
Speaker 8 (02:12:50):
And he's a stud. I think Pickens was upset last
year because he wasn't getting the football enough. Donalds, his
defense is a mess, right. This whole Mike A. Parsons
thing is embarrassment. Jerry Jones has just lost it, really,
he's lost it. I mean, when was the last contract
that that happened easily in Dallas with a star player.
It's always like a pain in the butt. So I
think Dallas their running game is non existent. Travonte Williams,
(02:13:12):
Miles Sanders, Jayden Blue, I'm not feeling it. I think
Doc is going to need to throw. He's gonna throw
the Lamb. He's gonna throw to George Pickens, and those
guys are going to need to be said because if
you don't feed Pickens, he's going to complain. And if
you don't feed Lamb, Lamb's going to complain. So I
think Dallas is going to be a pass first offense.
Speaker 2 (02:13:28):
Let's go to line one and talk to batter Doug
at one twenty four. Batter Doug Well with Rodal, Go ahead, Doug,
doctor Rogan to hear your voice again.
Speaker 10 (02:13:37):
Less Hurricanes and top of the Storms for Florida.
Speaker 8 (02:13:40):
Please appreciate that. Yeah, that's a question.
Speaker 4 (02:13:44):
Last year, my last year, my league really slept on
Chase Brown. I was able to get him where I
didn't expect to. Of course, he killed it. I'm sure
he's gonna draft higher this year. Who is this year's
Chase Brown.
Speaker 8 (02:13:57):
Yeah, that's a really great question. I love Chase Round
last year, A big fan. So I'm going to tell
you what I'm doing in leagues. I am beating people
to the punch on two players first, Trayyon Henderson. Okay,
I know he's going up draft boards. I don't care.
I'll climb. I'll climb with him. I think this guy's special.
(02:14:18):
Why do rookies not play because they don't know how
to pass protect? Henderson does. It's really good in pass protection.
And I think I said the name already a Mika
Buka for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They will not be
able to take him out of the lineup. He can
play anywhere, and I think Baker Mayfield has full confidence
in them. So look, in a world I don't know
(02:14:40):
your league, I can just tell you in my leagues,
in the high stakes leagues, Henderson has now moved up
to late third round, early fourth, and Buka's going late fifth,
early sixth. So I'm just telling everybody out there be
around early on both those guys. They're worth it, all.
Speaker 2 (02:14:55):
Right, Let's go to line five. Fernando for doctor Rono
on seven one. Hi, Brando, Hey, how are you all good?
I'm you know, I'm well, I'm well aware.
Speaker 9 (02:15:11):
Justin Jefferson all those great names, but I'm the Marquise.
Speaker 10 (02:15:16):
I thought your your.
Speaker 5 (02:15:18):
Trevor, Lawrence and Bonie.
Speaker 17 (02:15:21):
Quarterbacks was absolutely brilliant.
Speaker 7 (02:15:23):
Now I'm looking at risk Martin.
Speaker 13 (02:15:26):
He competitive.
Speaker 14 (02:15:28):
You know when we will help you.
Speaker 2 (02:15:32):
Fernanda, We're gonna let you go. Un Fortunately, it sounds
like you've got a bad connection there. I want to
give you one more before we get to brand and
wrap that up here, Rudal. A lot of folks are
very bullish on the Patriots. Drake May season number two
and they have a very soft schedule. Are you into
this early season hype on New England?
Speaker 8 (02:15:48):
I am, and I think one of my favorite moves
empty is to put Drake May and pair him with
Trevon Henderson. It's a move, It's it's the ball or move.
This year, May is mobile. It's going to run for
three or four, maybe five touchdowns, maybe four hundred yards.
Henderson's going to catch seventy five passes. And I think
you're gonna get a lot of upside with those guys
if I can try to piece together what Fernando was saying,
(02:16:10):
Wait on your quarterbacks, Build up your receivers. I love
guys like Ricky pearsall and at Buca and George Pickens,
Jamison Williams. Get a couple of running backs and the
first Omarion Hampton. Build your team, make it strong like
a house. Then get your quarterbacks almost be the roof.
Speaker 2 (02:16:31):
All right, last call, Let's get to Brandon on seven
ninety at one to twenty seven. Brandon, thanks for holding
a good afternoon.
Speaker 3 (02:16:38):
Hey guys, how you doing today? Good? My question for
the doc was I drafted Devon a Chain and Josh Jacobs.
Speaker 12 (02:16:47):
As my two running backs, and then I bought high
on Polston Loveland.
Speaker 8 (02:16:52):
What is your thoughts on that You're gonna need to
be careful because right now a chan is not one
hundred percent healthy dealing with an injury. And I think
there they are talking about bringing in Brian Robinson Junior
from the commanders. If they do that is that is
a telling sign that they're worried. I'm not telling you
to panic yet, I'm just telling you to keep your
(02:17:13):
eye on it. Jalen Wright also got injured injured in
practice today. I think you're going to see some movement
with Miami and the running back situation there. Colston Lovelin,
I love the player, but Caleb Williams has to be
more reliable, which we haven't seen yet. And there's a
lot of dudes there. You got Luther Burden, you got
DJ Moore, you got Roma Dunza. So it's not that
they don't like Loveland. I just don't know if he
(02:17:35):
gets more than forty five or fifty catches. So you know,
Josh Jacob's good player. I mean, he's the one that
the most that I think is your safest guy right now.
But the other two have slight risk.
Speaker 2 (02:17:46):
Doctor Royal great hearing your voice. Safe travels to our
town next week and we will talk to you in
a couple of weeks the Friday before the start of

a couple of weeks, and thanks for joining us again,
looking forward to this season as.
Speaker 8 (02:18:23):
Always, Take care and see talk soon.
Speaker 2 (02:18:26):
You got it. That's doctor Roto with us here on
Sports Talk seven ninety. Thanks again for him for joining us.
If you missed our conversation with Brian bogus Sevic on
the astros Woes, a recap of that is next one
on Sports Talk seven ninety. Brian boga Sevic is a
weekly guest with us Normlan on Wednesdays, but he had
TV duty yesterday, so we joined us earlier today. And
(02:18:48):
if you missed that conversation, well you get it a
little treat. We look forward to talking with him about
a variety of astro related things, and much of our
conversation early on was talking about the astros woes and
in particular yesterday starting picture the work of one Fromberveldez.
Speaker 7 (02:19:02):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 14 (02:19:03):
It was certainly disappointing, you know, seeing fromber not really
go out there and rise to the occasion. I think
you got to look at it through two different lenses.
You know, first of all, the physical right, like this
is two out of his last three starts where the
sinker hasn't had the right shape. The curve ball has
been pretty ineffective, and so that's kind of a you
(02:19:26):
got to sit down, you got to look at some video.
You got to work on your mechanics in between starts
and get that right. You know, when he's kind of
feeling for his sinker a little bit and you see
the velocity really varying, that's when you can tell he's
trying to find the right shape and the right release
point and he just didn't have it yesterday. But that's
that that happens throughout the course of the season. That's
(02:19:46):
something that that you can fix. That is unfortunate that
it's happening now, but it just is what it is.
The other side of it is kind of looking at
it from you know, where's from are at mentally right?
This is something that we've seen pop up throughout the
course of his career, is when things don't go his way,
frustration builds and its snowballs on him and you know,
(02:20:08):
innings get away from him, and you know, he kind
of becomes his own worst enemy. And you know, we've
never seen it like yesterday where it almost felt like
he was frustrated going into the game. Usually it takes
a blue pit and you know, some guys bunting on
him and trying to steal bases to really kind of
rattle him a little bit. It almost felt like going
into that game with where the offense has been, it
(02:20:30):
was almost like a, you know, instead of going into
that game thinking I'm going to be the guy that
elevates us, I'm going to be the guy that, you know,
even if we're not scoring runs, I'm going to throw
up a bunch of zeros and give us a chance.
It almost was a oh man, you know we're not
going to score any runs.
Speaker 2 (02:20:43):
It's going to be.
Speaker 14 (02:20:44):
Harder than it should be. It was almost a defeated
before you went out there kind of feeling. And that's
really concerning because you need your best guys to be
the guys that kind of stand up and say, hey,
you made an error behind me, I'll pick you up.
You guys in score any runs, I'll pick you up.
And that started the game. Yesterday certainly was not that.
Speaker 2 (02:21:04):
And Brian, we got to be fair here. We don't
want to be psychologist on the radio show. We want
to be people that talk about the game. You've played
the game, you know the intricacies of it. But it
is a pretty fair assertion to say that if you're
seeing that before the game, that's that's a huge cause
for concern. Now he could have his dabber down and
(02:21:27):
then go throw seven innings of three head ball and
spin and beautiful and get the high striking account and
we'd be like, well, that's just fromering from her. But
it's so disheartening because you know, I thought Hunter Brown
went in there going Trek Scoople is one of the
best pictures in the game. I've got to be my
very best, and I thought he had the Maxy to
do that. And I guess the thing is, not every
(02:21:49):
player you've ever played with, Brian Bogasvik, or every picture
you've been with, or you've covered or talked about or
played with, has that maxia of I don't care what's
going against this, I'm going to fight through it. And
maybe Fromber's one of those guys.
Speaker 14 (02:22:02):
But at the same time, we've seen him come up
big in big situations and playoff games in the past,
so it's not really that. It's more of just getting
him into the right headspace because we know from experience
that he can be a guy that can go out
there and thrive in pressure pack situations, and you know,
sometimes it builds start overstart. There's been some things that
(02:22:23):
haven't gone Fromber's way, even when he's been really good
in a couple of starts recently. So it's really just
getting him in the right space. You know, in between starts,
you've got to work on things mechanically in your bullpen sessions,
but you also got to get in the right headspace.
And I think you know, having a strong clubhouse, you know,
having Carlos carea back, having a two way there to
(02:22:43):
kind of sit down with him and reassure him that
you know, we're all in this with you and we
need you. I think that's kind of where you got
to get him to because if he's right I mean
I'm not talking about physically right, but when he's right
and he's going out there and taking on that challenge,
I mean, he's been up to it in the past.
Speaker 2 (02:23:03):
Brian bogasch with us here on Sports Talk seven, Ai
uh Bogie. This lineup construction, that's where I think a
lot of folks will call me and say, hey, why
is this player in front of this guy? Why is
this guy hitting in this part of the order. And look,
Joe's just trying to find something that works, and unfortunately,
when you've had such little offense the last handful of
days as well, try flip move different guys around. Generally speaking,
(02:23:27):
your assessment of the lineup in terms of its up
and down changes, I don't think there's much to do
with it, because it's not like it's been a certain
pocket of players that have done their job, and it's
just felt like a collective slump among the entire team.
Thus the case with no runs being scored except for
the two run homer yesterday afternoon.
Speaker 14 (02:23:44):
Yeah, I mean, you only have you know the tools
that are at your disposal, and I mean we've seen,
we've seen lineup tweaks throughout the course of the season
where if there's only a handful of guys who have
it going, you know, Joe's really tried to bunch those
guys up, so you have some sembl of you know,
guys stringing at bats together. The problem right now is
that it's not really going that way for anybody, and
(02:24:06):
you can only make a lineup out of what you got.
And you know, they dropped Sanchez down in the in
the lineup a little bit, but you know, at some point,
the lineup is what it is and the roster is
what it is, and it's on the players to go
out there and hit. And you can try to find
favorable matchups and kind of give yourself advantages in the margins.
But when the players aren't hitting, it doesn't matter, you know,
(02:24:29):
if you're hitting first or you're hitting nines.
Speaker 2 (02:24:30):
Honestly, Bogie, this team has had its offensive rolls really
more so this consistently is compared to being a team
that's putting up seven, eight to nine runs. To me,
this has been a kind of a byproduct. If you've
got a lot of guys getting a lot of AB's
(02:24:51):
that maybe are playing the most. And I'll use Cam
Smith as example. Taylor Tremuell has been a guy that's
been up and down with a variety of different teams.
Jacob Mountain like he's not necessarily ready for the big
time of major league baseball. How much of that is
do you think is the moment right now is really
big for a lot of these young men who have
not gotten as many professional at bats like this, how
(02:25:12):
many how much of this is dog days and how
much of this is? My god, Jordon, please make sure
your hands feel good. We need you in the heart
of the line up as soon as humanly possible.
Speaker 14 (02:25:22):
I think the biggest thing is is, you know, middle
of the order major league hitters run producers. Big time
hitters like Jordon or guys like him aren't very common,
and you can you can find guys who are swinging
a hot bat and have him in the middle of
the order for a while, and you can you know,
(02:25:42):
play a hot hand for a little bit. But you know,
at the end of the day, to have a you know,
big time offense that consistently produces runs, you need the
horses to do it. And you know, they did a
great job for a long time getting by piecing together
a lineup and having guys put in situations where they
can thrive and getting production out at the bottom of
(02:26:03):
a lineup of guys who are just kind of filling
in roles. You know, a lot of that has to
do with you need your big guys up at top producing,
so the guys further down the lineup can just be
you know, supplementing that. But you know, at the at
the end of the day, you become who you are,
and you know, Cam Smith is a guy who was
in college last year, and some of these other guys
(02:26:25):
were guys that were not necessarily going to be counted
on as everyday players. And when you get thrust into
that role at some point, it's going to get exposed
a little bit. And you know, if they're going to
score runs consistently and be a productive offense consistently, it's
got to be from the guys who can do it.
And getting your do on back will be helpful, and
(02:26:45):
getting Altuve hot again will be helpful, and getting Christian
Walker going will be helpful. But yeah, you're you're not
going to consistently score runs if you're just trying to
piece mail a lineup together.
Speaker 2 (02:26:55):
How much did the former outfielder and you feel for Taylor,
Tremmell and Hitty took the first thing in the game yesterday.
Speaker 14 (02:27:02):
You know what I First of all, that's the position
that you're in physically there where you're you're on a
dead sprint backwards, but at the same time you're trying
to kind of fight to keep the ball from from
tailing over your head, so you're leaning back like that's
the worst position you can be in to run face
first into the wall. So yeah, that that doesn't feel good.
But this is, you know, one of the things where
(02:27:24):
you point at and you say, Okay, the team's not
playing well, they're not hitting well, they're not winning games.
You know, how frustrating is it? You know, is Joe's
spot of going in the clubhouse and flipping tables and stuff.
But it's like you've got guys literally running face first.
Speaker 2 (02:27:37):
Into the wall.
Speaker 14 (02:27:38):
I mean, the night before Taylor Trammel laid out on
the warning track and landed flat on his back. So
there's no lack of effort, there's no lack of playing hard,
and so yeah, I feel for guys going out there
and trying to put in that effort and still not
getting the results that they want.
Speaker 19 (02:27:54):
