Speaker 1 (00:10):
What's happened? Everybody. Welcome into the Matt Thomas Show with
the Ross. Chris Gordy here with you. Ross. He will
be in. He's finishing up something with a client right now.
Matt Thomas is off today and probably for the better.
He deserves a punishment after what the Rockets did last night,
(00:34):
losing in overtime or should I say choking in the
fourth quarter and then going on to loosen overtime to
the Sacramento Kings, who stink it just had that vibe
as they were starting to close the gap, Dennis Shrewders
hitting shots. I'm going come on, man, we'll get into that.
We'll get into the texans ugly performance yesterday against the
(00:58):
two win Raiders. But a win is a win, survive
in advance, you move on. You don't get any extra
style points for for convincing wins. You just have to win,
and the Texans did that yesterday. But it was ugly.
As Ashton Genty said, you know what, all those fantasy
owners right there, I Am going to help your ass
(01:20):
today and run all over the Houston Texans and c
J Stroud that one will not go to that performance,
will not be sent to Canton as he was twenty
three of thirty five for one hundred and eighty seven yards.
Run game very inconsistent with no wooding barks, Jawar Jordan
fifteen rushes for fifty three yards and Nick Chubb six
(01:44):
carries for thirty three and again Texans do just enough.
Defense played well overall. Derek Barnett with a sack, Wi
Laterson Junior with a sack, and It'll Hunter with a sack.
Those guys continue to do their thing, and to pick
six for Derek Single Junior first of his career on
Gino Smith. But you know the good thing is I
(02:06):
believe and Ross is jumping in with us. I believe
with a Colts lost tonight, the Texans would clinch a
wild cart spot. But the problem is those danged old
Jacksonville Jaguars just will not lose. As you were ten
and five, they are eleven and four. You've won seven
(02:26):
in a row. They've won six in a row. And
the AFC South may just very well be Trevor Lawrence's
to grab now Again, this thing could still play out
differently over the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
But are the Jaguars really good? It feels like the
Jaguars are really could I think? Why do?
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Okay, besides all that of Liam Cohen, we all made
fun of him, thought they were going to go over
because the guy just looked like some kind of nerd
who got a football job.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
I will tell you this. Uh, Liam Cohen several years
ago got hired by Kentucky as their offensive coinator and
they brought in the backup quarterback for Penn State by
the name of Will Levis. And that season, I want
to say, what was that? A ten win season for Kentucky.
It was really good and the offense was like, whoa
look at this offense. Liam Cohen then went jumped to
(03:13):
the NFL. Back to the NFL. Believe. He went to
the Rams for a year and then came back to
Kentucky and a different quarterback.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
It wasn't the same, but then he was with Baker
Baker Mayfix. Baker Mayfield looking like he's regressing this year
by the way.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
And so but regardless, the Liam Cohen's a good offensive
line and he is getting the most out of Trevor
Lawrence this year. It hasn't been all pretty, but man,
this stretch they've been on these last six in a row,
including yesterday their most impressive win of the season, beating
the Broncos in Denver.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Four touchdowns for Trevor Lawrence on the road against that
Denver defense which is.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Really good, and that and that Broncos defense loves the
hold people under twenty points. I mean, that's what they do.
So yeah, that was very impressive.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
I found myself like, as the weeks been going on, like, eh,
Jaguars whatever. I mean, it's Trevor Lawrence not gonna be
that big of a deal. But I mean, especially with
the big statement win yesterday, it's like, Okay, maybe these
Jaguars are for real. Because it's not only that they
beat the Broncos at Mile High and as I said,
Trevor Lawrence going four touchdowns against that defense, it's just
(04:20):
it's how easy they made it look well, and they're
going to win the AFC South now.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
And for anybody you know saying why are they talking
so much about the Jaguars, it's because it would be
nutso for this Texans team to win say eleven or
twelve games and have to go on the road as
a wildcard team. I just think that's Yeah, you're crazy.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
You've won seven games in a row and you're not
ahead of your division. Of course that helps that you
started zero to three. But the Jaguars keep winning. Not
worried about the Colts at all. I mean, you know,
ever since Daniel Jones snapped his leg in half and
all that, and it's they're trotting out Philly Rivers and
whatnot in company. But you win seven or you still
can't gain ground. And then now you're down to just
(05:04):
a couple of games left with it being the Colts
and the Titans. For the Jaguars, they are winning the
AFC South. Yeah, so how it sits right now?
Speaker 1 (05:14):
At least in the standings you've got in the division,
you've got the Jaguars sitting ahead of And now my
internet will not load. Great pure Okay, Jaguars are still
in first years at eleven and four Texans out of
ten and five. The Colts have slipped back now they
have lost four in a row. They are eight and
six and they will play the Niners, and I believe
(05:35):
in Indy, right, I'd have to double check on that. Yeah,
I mean they could pull it up here, but again
they can.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Be playing that on the moon. I'm gonna go with
the Niners. He had nine Ers five and a half
point favorites at the Indianapolis.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Colts Lucas Oil. But in the playoff picture, the Broncos
and Patriots, they have both clunch playoff spots. They're both
at twelve and three at the one and two seed,
the Jaguars right behind them at eleven. For the stupid
ass Pittsburgh Steelers find a way to win against the
Lions yesterday.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Speaking of smoke and mirrors and the Pittsburgh Steelers, how
they continuing to pull games out of it.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
There was a fantasy owner of a Monroe Saint Brown
who could not get in the damn end zone. Who
got in the end zone, and then they oh was
holding bree back. But anyway, they would be the four
seed at nine and six. And then you got a
couple of double digit win teams, the Chargers at eleven
and four, the Bills at eleven and four, and the
Texans sitting at ten and five. The Texans will play
(06:31):
the Chargers this week, so this will decide a lot
on you know, where these two teams go. The Chargers
because of the I believe them playing the Broncos in
the last week. The Chargers were in a spot where
if they win these last two, if they went out,
they could get the number one seed still. So really, yeah,
I was reading out today they if they went out now,
(06:53):
I don't know if that's I guess the Patriots are
still a game ahead of them, so they would need
some help there, but the Broncos being just one game
ahead of them. If the Chargers win their last two,
they win the tiebreaker with Denver.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, so you want to basically be the five seed
or at very least the six. You definitely don't want
to be seven at the moment. You're going on the
road to New England then as the last seed if
you advance it reseeds, so then you'd be going on
the road to Denver, even though Jacksonville just took care
of business there. You don't want to go two games
straight on the road to the two and one seeds.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Yeah. So it's it's not pretty man. As as excited
as you want to get for the Texans and taking
care of their business, and you know, win is a win,
they've won seven in a row, it still is going
to be a daunting task of and you talk about
this team having to go on the road down, We'll say,
(07:46):
uh Ross, the Chargers look pretty damn good. Justin Herbert
looked awesome yesterday in Dallas. Amario Hampton's back healthy. Yeah,
But if we're talking playoffs like Denver, Broncos and Bonnet,
they scare you.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
No.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Drake May and the Patriots, I mean they were lucky
to got to Baltimore last night.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I'm more scared of the Patriots. But I'll put it
this way. I don't think the Texans I will not
be in my mind, the Texans have no chance in
any game, in any game because of this defense and
how good it is when they get a shareback.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Travon Henderson got hurt last night for New Right. We'll
see what happens with him. But like and then the
freaking Aaron Rodgers Steelers, they're not scaring anybody. I mean,
the Bills are really If Josh Allen and that group
puts it all together, they I put them probably as
the favorite.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yeah, they're in theory playoff pedigreg Yeah. If we just
go look at the Vegas odds, I'm gonna guess it's
probably Patriots and Bills and one to two in whatever order.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
As far as the favorites to win the why and
the Patriots though, I mean like regular season awesome, but
like postseason Mike Rabel and Drake May.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
I mean Rabels made Didn't he make an AFC championship
game with the Titans like a decade ago?
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:54):
He did, still made it. I think it was like Blake,
not Blake Portals. It was with some bad Tannehill. Was
it Ryan Tannehill? I think? But Derek Henry running for
like two hundred yards a game in those days. So
I think Rabel's a good coach.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
I do. The point being, this thing is wide open.
I mean again, you want the best path for the Texans.
You'd rather have home field, You'd rather be going that
that path. But even if you got to go on
the road, I don't. I'm not afraid. Like now, granted
you got a stand, you got to get what he
marks back health, he can get this run game back gone.
But that's not a The AFC just appears to be
(09:27):
wide open this year.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Yeah, I agree, And I think the Texans are in
that mix. And I think this defense can keep them
in any game that they're gonna play. I mean, they've
lost five games, all five or by one score. That's
thanks to this incredible defense. So as long as the
offense can hold ups, it's into the bargain. This team's
a super Bowl contender. But we've also been saying that
for several weeks, and the offense look blair against the
(09:49):
freaking Las Vegas Raiders yesterday.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
So it certainly is a concern.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
And you got a couple of weeks to kind of
shore things up, and it is a week to week game,
and guys can come alive and guys can hot at
the right time.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
We've seen great.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Playoff runs from teams who just get hot at the
right time. The Texans have the tools to get hot
at the right time. They have a dominant defense, They
have c J. Stroud who has has shown flashes of
being a franchise quarterback. Nico Collins is great. Hopefully you
get what he marks back and you're okay there, But
the potential is there to get hot at the right
(10:22):
time and make a playoff run. It's almost though, like, hey,
wake me up when it happens.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
We said going into these two games, playing the crappy
Cardinals and the crappy Raiders, you might have a letdown.
They showed up in full force against the Cardinals. They
had the letdown yesterday. Any concern there or is it
just you know, it's the NFL. Sometimes you play a
crappy team, you let your guard down.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
I would towards more of the latter. But what if
they don't get that pick six? What if I mean
Gino Smith throws that ball into the dirt instead into
Derek Stingleer's hand. It was an off target throw and
you're losing that game. You only scored sixteen points against
the loss Vegas freaking Raiders who are walking. The defense
(11:03):
is giving up like forty points in every single week.
It seems like they lost the week before thirty one
to zero. Yeah, and they come into your town and
if not for a pick six, you probably don't win
that game.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
I was just more concerned about Ashton Genty running like
a man possessed like that was the craziest because honestly,
if you stuff him, you win that game going away.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Yeah, Matt Thomas's favorite Ashton Genty with a big game
against the Houston Texans, And well, I guess at the
end of the day, you won the game. You've won
seven in a row. It's not all They're not going
to all gonna be pretty. It's not all gonna be easy.
You took care of business. Now you got a big
one coming up against the Chargers on the road, which
is I mean, two teams that are fighting to be
(11:45):
the class of the AFC.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Yeah, and Herbert, as much as I've not been a
fan of him, I think I've come around on him.
He's really good.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
This has got that really hot girlfriend, Herne Madison, beer
or whatever. You're taking the role of Matt Thomas. You're right, Well,
I didn't do this. This is what I would have done.
Now I'm doing it all right. Chargers only one and
a half point favorites, hosting the Texans on Saturday on
(12:13):
NFL Network.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Okay, how you feeling about the Texans? You got the
game against the Raiders, didn't feel great, but they got
the win. How concerned are we are they still AFC
contenders or do you want to see something this week
against the Chargers. Low total on that one, by the way,
thirty nine and a half. You got college football playoff
action to get to as well. Houston Rockets lose in
overtime to the Sacramento Kings seven one three two one

We'll get to you next. We've got a lot of
stuff to get to. We have to tell the truth.

(13:05):
in the am. Here on Sports Talk seven ninety It
is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Matt Thomas out
today traveling with the Houston Rockets. He will be back tomorrow.
Highlights of the University of Miami versus Texas A and
M football game over the weekend. No highlights, I don't
see there's I haven't seen A and M score a
touchdown yet. Yeah, they didn't fordy is there what they didn't?
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Well they got a field goal? Oh really?
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Well?
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Okay, well how many field goals they're showing? That clip
to Mario Kraver was like a sixty yard pass. Like
how they didn't score on that drive was crazy.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Dang, that's a darn shame. Well, I mean the Aggies
are having the greatest season ever, and they were eleven
and oh and they extended their coach and everything's all
great in Agiland, right.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
I think the line I heard was they started eleven
and oh and forget the twelfth man. They couldn't find
that twelfth win.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Yeah, I mean, well, they at least they got the
conference championship or.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
That's this, I mean, like, that's super disappointing. Did they
accomplish anything this year? Pretty good? Pretty good? Okay, I'm
just wondering. I'm just asking for a friend. But look,
it's it's one thing to lose to Texas and mess
out on the SEC championship. It is brutal to lose
a home playoff game like them in Oklahoma. Now, Oklahoma,
(14:25):
you played Alabama. I guess you know it is the
seventeen that sevent Sooners. So it was funny. I mean
I saw a lot of Longhorn fans got out Peacock
and going, oh, sorry, Aggie's the Longhorns or so Sooners.
And then they're going back, who the Longhorns doing this weekend?
Speaker 2 (14:42):
You a weren't even playing. Hey still alive, baby, still living.
The cheese at Bowl, I'm sorry, the cheese its are
not citrus.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Why is it the cheese at citrus? That's really disgusting.
If you've ever drank orange juice with cheese its, it
is not.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
A good picker. It's not advisable.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
All right.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Seven one three two one two five to seven ninety
is the phone number. Chris Gordy is graciously hanging out.
We were talking some Texans there in the first segment.
We also are going to talk some college football anything
you guys want to get to seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Jonathan Allen is here. Hi, Jonathan,
haven't seen you a week plus. How's everything is good?
How'd it go last week with Matthew? You did you
(15:26):
keep him in line?
Speaker 4 (15:27):
For the most part?
Speaker 2 (15:28):
It's kind of difficult. I know it's a difficult job. Okay,
I'll to some pointers. I know what to do.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
I would talk a lot, like every time I n
that was leaning on Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
You gotta lean on. You gotta lean on your producer
when you're hosted by yourself. That's why I'm thankful for Jonathan.
Thankful for you hanging out, Gordy, and thank you for
you guys on the phone. Soup's holding longest at seven
one three, two, one two five seven ninety. What's up,
soups man A a police.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
I haven't called in a wall.
Speaker 6 (15:55):
If I can get like maybe forty five or sixty
seconds on this, I'll hit the highest real quick. First
of all, I went to the Aggie's game. I'm not
Aggie fan, but the atmosphere crazy. My first like experience
with that. That was insane. But the team sucks. But
moving on that brought do they have.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Like the biggest gap between quality of team and atmosphere
because everyone's always like, oh my god, this unreal atmosphere.
This is unbelievable a Kyle Field. And then I don't
want to say they always lose, because they didn't always
lose this year, but I mean they seem to lose
a lot at Kyle Field for all this great atmosphere
fans brought it though.
Speaker 5 (16:27):
That's a good hey hey Ross, let me say like this.
I've been to Tuscalusca in regular season.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
I've been to Washington like where the Huskies played, and
in terms of like decibels, like that was probably the
loudest for a zero point scoring team I've ever seen
in my life. If that's any compensation. Moving on to
the NFL, if I can, so, here's something crazy I
was reading and found out, and don't laugh at me
about saying this. So hypothetically, if all seven teams finished
(16:52):
twelve and five, which is about point zero three percent chance,
the Texans would actually be a number one seed. How
crazy is that that? In the AFC the talent is
so tight between the teams that any one of those
teams could be anywhere between one and seven. Well minus
Broncos they would be at worse four. And then regarding
the Raiders game right, one of the things I also
looked up is the Raiders could easily be eight and
(17:14):
seven if not for like three bone play calls by
the coach and two questionable officials.
Speaker 5 (17:19):
They lost games.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
Three more wins, I don't know about eight and seven.
Speaker 6 (17:24):
Well go ahead, no no, no, no, like if you not,
Like I went back and watched a couple of games,
like even the two score games, they were like right
there at the end kind of like how the Texans
could easily be fourteen and one and whatnot. So my
take from all this is with the parody in the
AFC this year and the way the Texans played at
Kansas City and typically.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
On the road.
Speaker 5 (17:40):
I was there at the Rams game.
Speaker 6 (17:42):
They remind me of that two thousands Giants defense where
you have this insane defense.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
I think they call it like the NASCAR packet that
was straight handed all those guys.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
And then you have the game manager at quarterback aka
Eli aka CZ Like, are we okay if like the
Texans win that way having the Eli Manning type quarterback?
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Anyways, Happy Alla day.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
See guys, hey be belated birthday.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Wrong, thank you forty.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
If my Cougars beat the uh Tigers, I like to challenge.
Speaker 6 (18:05):
You to a wing bet or a beer bet, just
out of good nature and I love you guys. Happy
holidays and uh go kooks.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Yeah, assumes you got to give me l s U
plus seven. We we've had more plus seven more opt
outs yesterday. You are getting the B team, perhaps even
the C team.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Lo.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
I mean, look, I'm not I'm not complaining. I'm just
saying little real about where it was.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
That you're making excuses. That's what it feels like.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
I mean, let's be real about where we are. Uh,
what's it?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
What is the line? Latest? It was like three? Oh yeah,
it's holding it three man? Let me asking for seven.
Look at this guy, line's holding it three? You want
four extra points?
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Come on? I get squad over the kooks straight up?
Come on, man, yeah, straight up. This game means way more.
You know what they're talking about is your Super Bowl? Different?
Like everybody wants to get ready to let for link there.
They don't even want Frank Wilson. In fact, there l
is rooting against Frank Well because he's about to go
be the running backs coach at Old Miss. Why are
we letting them coach? This is stupid. Our coaches are
(19:05):
over at Old Miss.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Somebody's gotten played in the playoffs. Imagine he's getting some
kind of paycheck. When we see is coaching the playoffs
for the Old Miss? When when is that game?
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Saturday night? Okay, Saturday night, let's Comber twenty seventh DA
fifteen kickoff the look at this guy? Kinders, Texas Bowl Kinders,
Texas ball dot Com.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Thank you for all your great seasonings and sauces.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Well I'm sure, I mean they'll have some maybe at
the stadium, but it's really about the football.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
All right. Really?
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Uh So there you go. They're the the LSU, the
weakest LSU. Smack talk I think I've ever heard of
my life can give me seven points yesterday three. Literally
every starter is opting on this game. Literally every starter's
got to be one guy there. There might be one.
I mean, you know what, maybe they need to start
tying these nil deals in a bowl games.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
There you go. There's the reality is the ESPNS have
made it. It's it's playoff for bus player for bucks
where you don't make the playoff for but I guess
out of hell with it.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Yeah, you're definitely cheapen though, I mean, it was always
gonna happen, and I'm glad we do have the play
the playoff, even though I'm not glad about Yeah. Great
great showings by two Lane and James Madison. We'll get
to that as well. All right, Thomas, you on whole.
We'll get you in the next segment. We do have
to take quick break. You guys want to get in.
There are phone lines open seven one three two one

sports RV and you know what, follow me on Instagram
at sports RV.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
I would appreciate that as well.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
It is a Matt Thomas Show with Ross with you
until two o'clock here on Sports Talk seven ninety All right, now,
now you're out of control, Gordy. I gotta call you out.
The actual Vegas line is three for LSU versus Houston LSU.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Minus three or he's Houston minus three.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
Okay, So Soubs comes back and he's tweeting Gordy asking
for two and a half points. Now Subsi asked for
a half point. However, I get is this the art
of the deal? Are you negotiating? And now Gordy's asking
for seven and a half Jonathan, Oh, the actual Vegas
line is three. You gotta get like three to one
(21:17):
for that line.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
I'm just telling you my vibe is you Houston by seven?
Speaker 2 (21:21):
You not only asked for seven, then you asked for
seven in the hook, Gordy's seven and seven and a
half is a big hook.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Now come on, I'm don't even take Ellen. I might
even take Houston by ten. WHOA head on over to
Lake Charles.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
Gordy, you can't go to whole season repping LSU and
now just not.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
You can't do that. You have to be a realist.
Though they've their offense has been absolutely putrid, and especially
since Michael van Buren's taken over. My god, this is
what van Buren's done since he's taken over. He took over.
Midway through the Alabama game. They scored nine against Arkansas.
They were lucky to get twenty three Western Kentuck. They
(22:00):
scored thirteen in Oklahoma, which got a great defense. But thirteen.
So you've scored nine, twenty three, thirteen and thirteen. The
Kooks are scoring at least twenty four. I'd say, all right,
I like this, So twenty four to seventeen Cooks is
what are ULSU fans gonna show up?
Speaker 2 (22:18):
What do you think the crowd's gonna be?
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Like?
Speaker 1 (22:19):
There will be I mean, there's there's the diehards who
will be there no matter what. But I think it's
gonna be probably sixty five seventy percent Cooke fans. It's
gonna be a lot more red again. Oh Shoe fans
are just ready for the Kiffin error. They're they're if
they could just skip over this game, a lot.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
Of them would, right, they don't want to watch the
seasoning ball. I get it all right, seven one three,
two one two.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
I will say the Texas Bowl always does a good
job the presentation.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Yes, true, seven one three two one two. You can
put that one in the trophy case. Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. His is the phone number.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Tom
has been holding patiently. What's up, Tom?
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (22:59):
How's it got?
Speaker 5 (23:01):
I was watching that Rockets game last night. Man's tragic.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (23:09):
One thing Colin that I can see is that, you know,
all these back to back games Adams is playing, and
you know, maybe maybe Capella is not there backup you
tout to health. It seems like his screens and his
rebounding is too missing.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Yeah, it's not great when Adams has to miss the
back to backs and the team hasn't been good on those.
I mean, I mean, well, it's not like all season.
They've only been having back to backs very recently within
the last few weeks. But he liked to have Adams back, Honestly,
I like Clincapella. He wasn't good last night, but overall
he's been pretty solid as a rebounder, as a kind
of the second backup to the backup to the backup
(23:51):
whenever Steven Adams is out. But I don't think he's
necessarily a problem with this team.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
I'm not pointing to Clint Capella in theory. When you're
fully healthy and in a playoff rotation, click Copela is
not going to see the floor.
Speaker 4 (24:05):
That's true.
Speaker 7 (24:06):
But maybe I was thinking, you know, maybe I need
to do more, to do some screening or get Shepherd
more shots or something.
Speaker 8 (24:15):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
All right, thanks some sorry anything else?
Speaker 7 (24:20):
Oh that's it, Thanks.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
All right, thank you appreciate it. Yeah. Reed Sheppard continues
to play well, and he's I mean, I guess you
were even to call it a breakout season because now
he's drying. He's not scoring twenty five a night, but
he's certainly showing himself to be a capable backup slash
bench score who's who can go for thirty points in
(24:42):
a night, and he's getting a lot of He's been
getting a lot of opportunities and he's been taking advantage
of those. I don't know, it's like we need to
run through more Reed Shepherd or anything like that. But
for what he is right now, he played thirty four
minutes last night. He was able to score a couple
of nights ago, he had what the twenty four points. Yeah,
he was amazing in that dim game. So I really
love what Reed Shepherd is doing and I think he
(25:04):
I think he's going at the right pace. I don't
think it's time to like force feed more to re
Shepherd or anything like that. He's been aggressive, he's been
getting his shots up, and he's been scoring well and disappointing,
especially when you pair it with the big win at
the Denver Nuggets. To lose like that against the Sacramento
Kings with Russell Westbrook jumping around and acting like it's
(25:24):
Game seven of the NBA Finals, and it's like, come on, man,
that's Russell. I'm not mad at Russ. That's kind of
who he is. He's gonna do that. That's I mean,
he's one of the I mean you've said this for years, like, oh,
you take your son to the game, say hey, watch
this guy. You want to play hard every minute you're
on the floor, watch this guy. And that would be
Russell Westbrook. He's been the prime of example of that
his entire career. So, I mean, it just does it
(25:47):
reel great?
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:48):
I know?
Speaker 2 (25:48):
God, well, you know we had he made a doke
on when he'd made a couple of threes early in
the game, and it's like, how long do you just
continue to let him do that? And he's like, yeah,
we like when he continues to jack up threes, but
unfortunately burned them. Went five for twelve from three point
land last night, and overall a few weeks ago, he's
shooting thirty seven percent for three. I don't know where
he is now. Yeah, he's come down, he's down to
(26:08):
thirty five percent. So not likely that he's gonna wake
up and be a great three point shooter after being
a horrible one for like twenty years.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
But it was the haunting of former Rockets. Yeah, Dennis Shrewder,
Dennis Shrewder game, every.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Rockets legend, Dennis Shrewder.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
Unfortunately, every big shot it felt like down the stretch
he hit it. Just uh yeah, it was. It was
a crappy, crappy game to what's the boy that that's
the problem with the Rockets. Somebody said, I think what
eight of their nine losses have all been in crunch time?
Speaker 2 (26:38):
Is that true? In close games?
Speaker 1 (26:39):
Close games?
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Yeah, so that sounds about right.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
I mean it's good from a standpoint. Yeah, nobody's blowing
him out. It's also, man, you got to figure this out.
And that's the whole point of you traded Jalen Green
for Kevin Durant was to have a finisher.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Yeah, now you're down to sixth temporarily in the almost
said americanly uh in the Western Conference.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
And now you get almost a must win against the club.
Come on, now, don't go with the must win the
Lakers December. I mean it's gonna be Christmas Night, naturally
televised audience and sold out Staples Center or whatever that
oh dot Co, whatever the hell it is, crypto Cryptostaple
(27:23):
to me. Still, but like they'll always be Staples to me,
damn it. Like they're gonna want more than anything to
win that one. So it's like, God, if you slip
up and lose tomorrow night and then you lose on Thursday,
this thing really starts to get Harry. Uh.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Well, I mean it's it's a long season. They can
have a December lull and then they can. They're gonna
close Straw. They're gonna be good. Obviously. The the glaring
need of ball handling slash point guard is gonna continue
to be there unless some sort of move gets made,
which I just don't think they have the wiggle room
to do much of so we'll see how it goes.
(27:56):
Guys are on the floor, are gonna have to get better. Reed,
Shepherd has been getting better, and overalls, the season has
gone along a men. Thompson has been getting better. I
mean he had eight assists, just a couple of turnovers
last night. So the ball handling can improve and the
play can improve, and you're just gonna have to look
more for internal growth rather than external growth if you
are the Houston Rockets. Okay, let's go ahead and take
(28:18):
another break here on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross,
Chris Gordy is hanging out. Jonathan Allen is here. Full
lines are open for you at seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven ninety We have to.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Tell the truth.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
Coming up at eleven to thirty. I will be taking
the reins on that. We also, of course have the
news at noon. We're here till two o'clock. You guys
want to get in, you can. It is the Matt
Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas at seven one three,
two one two five seven ninety all Right, Gordy continues
to negotiate. You're calling LSU a Sunbelt level team at
(28:58):
this point.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
There's yeah. I mean the guys who are going to
be playing in this sure, Look, this is a good
thing for you of age, Like I think this is
gonna be great for Willie Fritz to get a win
over an SEC team and finish the season strong. I'm
just telling you right now, like expectations.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
You're going for ten wins, right, I forget what they finished.
I think they're nine and three, right, going for ten wins?
Speaker 1 (29:21):
Be nice? Go will ten win season? Get a one
zero going up? Yes, these things and it's so easy
to just hit the Google machine. Yes, they are nine
and three. See I was right, Yeah, ten win season
be huge. I'm just being realistic. I'm telling you right now.
I issue was I mean yesterday it was I got
the LS covering the point, went weeks out, West weeks out,
(29:45):
I mean weeks it's the list goes on and on
and on.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Okay, all right, Gordy, I'll let you soft play.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
Well.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
Speaking of that, I think basically a lot of guys
are transferring out of the hitting the portal for the
Texas Longhorns as well.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
But DeAndre Moore, wide receiver to the portal.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Yeah, he's kint of like eleven touchdowns almost a thousand
yards in his career.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
Why would you go? Hey, Arch Manning got better as
a year went along. Hey, I bet he's gonna be
awesome next year in the Heisman favorite, I'm out straight cash, Huh, Like,
why would you not? You know what I meant to do.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
That I was at I was visiting our friends in
Lake Charles to the east, and oh you know, I
was just saying I was at the DraftKings sports book
and I forgot I was gonna look for the future
Heisman odds. But I imagine Arch is the favorite and
the odds aren't that great.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Yeah, I mean, you're not gonna get good value there now.
If you want to get value on Texas as a
national champ in twenty twenty six, maybe.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Schedule looks pretty tough, but you know you might as
well parlay both. Right, one's gonna likely lead to the other.
Arch wins the Heisman and Texas wins the championship. Oh,
you probably get some good sick.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
Can you say that one more time? Now? Go come on,
please for my birthday? What did Mike what did Mike
Elko say, We're the floor, We're the Floyd Ship.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
And then when that got played at dk R, that
was pretty funny. That was a great moment. And then
they fell flat on their face in the playoff. That's
a shame. Couldn't happened to a nicer program. Wishing them
all the best? All right, seven one three two one
two five seven ninety is the phone number if you
want to get in. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. James Incline, what's up, James?
Speaker 8 (31:28):
Yeah, the colleagues playoffs were a joke and everybody knew
they were going to be a joke. To Lane didn't
show up, James Madsin didn't show up. They shouldn't have
been in there.
Speaker 5 (31:35):
They should have him didn't show up.
Speaker 8 (31:38):
Well, yeah, I hate him.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Didn't show up, But that was ridiculous.
Speaker 8 (31:41):
They said that his red guy was gonna be a
Heisman Trophy candidate. Think I was horrible. I bet they
wishing they had Carlin Weigman.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
Now, he had a bad game, but he was good
all year.
Speaker 8 (31:52):
Ye had two bad games. Didn't bad game against Texas.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
Okay, he's still finished. The year he was he was
like twentieth in passing yards. He stow a great year,
he had a great season.
Speaker 8 (32:03):
He was Canada.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
It was a joke.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Yeah, well, I mean how much you know what, I'm
interested to get your opinion, Gordy. How much of this
is just a one off? But normally there's not gonna
be a two lane and a James Madison in correct.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
All this is gonna course correct because they're changing. They
already changed the rules next year that Notre Dame if
they get the ten wins, they're automatically in uh the pendicular,
changing it that the conference champ is in no matter what,
which I think is a mistake because Duke would have
been in this year had that been enacted. But they
want to know it's a stupid equality thing. Stop with
(32:39):
the equality bull crap and just take one through twelve.
But it's just stupid where the ac ACC goes. We're
not signed to that if we don't have an automatic
season table like be good and you'll be in the
top twelve. Yes, that's but everybody's scared of their own
damn shadow. Everybody's going, oh, no, group of five, we're
not signing golf of that list. We get an auto
(33:00):
about seat.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
Why do they have a shit? Why do they have
a say? By the way, what is the well.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
That's the report. Last week was at the SEC in
the Big ten. We're literally this close to going. You
know what, guys, believe y'all, we don't need you. We're
gonna go do our own thing and way whoa wait
wait wait wait, no, we need the SEC. We need
the Big ten. How about we just give one seat
for a group of five, Greg saying goes, if we
go to sixteen, I'll allow it. Fine. So that was
the agreement.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
So do you think eventually? So it's what is it
next year?
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Twelve? We decided it sounds like it is trending towards
they will vote to go to sixteen next year.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Okay, well, and then can we stop there? I thought
we were gonna stop at twelve. I thought there was
a push for twenty four. I knew we were gonna
I knew we were not going to stop at two
or four, but I didn't know it would be this
fast to stop twelve.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
I will tell you the first round byes, I'll tell you.
Just talking with some people who were in Norman on Friday,
I was in college station on Saturday. The college campuses
need to be The first two rounds need to be
on college campuses. It's no offense to the Sugar Bowl
and the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl, but I'm sorry,
it's college football. What makes college football fun the pageantry
(34:12):
of being on a college, on a campus where you
can see more people. Look, take your freaking corporate sponsors.
You know a good Year It's the Goodyear Cotton Bowl
at College Field. Like you could put the naming rights
on the good Columbus, Ohio, but like play it on
the college campus. Stop bringing these the NFL stadium. I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
I mean, these sponsors want their money. At least the
big bowl games are making some cash, and the cities
want these games as well. I mean, it's a whole
it's a whole thing. There's a whole lot of red
tape behind all of this.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Oh, look at Notre Dame. They failed to this is
breaking news. They failed to reach an agreement with USC
to extend their historic series. Wow, and they will not
play and they're not gonna play for the guilded why not?
The Irish are finalizing a two year series of BYU.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Oh okay, well, I guess b Y is kind of good.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
The two teams that were just on the outside looking.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
At they're not trying to stay the game now right
Like Vanderbilt we want to do one quick showcase game.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Clark's like, hey, name the place, will play anywhere.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
Anybody, oh man crazy. Well, the four matchups all should
be pretty good.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
But like, here's the other thing to last year. You
remember the last batch of rankings going into last year.
Do you remember where Boise was ranked like sixth? They
were ninth. Okay, so Boise would have been in exactly.
And that's the thing. Like Tulane lost at UTSA this year,
in any other year, that would have outsted down. Yeah,
James Mass, I don't even know who they lost to,
But like they should not have been in it. Should
(35:47):
it would be if you're a group of five team,
you could get in and should you top to have
just be to twelve twelve and oh or eleven to
one type season.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
That's all that's I'm with you. I've been saying that
for years. Just take the top twelve. However, they are
no conference automatics, no champions or anything.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
See, but the power force pushing forward well, Conference ship
should be no matter what.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
Well, that's ridiculous happens Duke Duke.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Is seven to five and they win the ACC. They
shouldn't be exactly, Duke's not good enough. Sorry, now they kicked.
They take your trophy and put it in your case.
They shot themselves in the foot though. They're stupid tie
breakers because Miami should have played for an a SEC title.
It was the whole, like percentage and all that. So
I think the CYC's gonna try to fix that moving forward.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
All right, Well, I like all the matchups Ohio State, Miami,
Texas or Texas Tech, Oregon, Fredy and Slip Indiana, Alabama
and Georgia Ole Miss. So some good matchups left and
then also a good matchup here in Houston is the
mac Thomas Show with Ross eleven o clock in the
(36:59):
am here on a Sports Talk seven ninety. It be
beautiful Houston, Texas, rossby Arial, Chris Gordy with you Jonathan
Allen as well. We have to tell the truth. Coming
up at eleven to thirty. Phone lines open for he
had seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety We've
been talking a lot of college football got the College
(37:22):
Football Playoff continuing as there were some good games so well,
actually no, there wasn't. Really What was the best game
over the weekend? I guess A and M in Miami
was ten a three game?
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Oh yeah, Well, what's funny is? I mean Oklahoma Alabama
was entertaining, even though it ended up being a ten
point win for Alabama. But Oklahoma up seventeen. Nothing, that's
a shame. Then they have the blocked punt, then the
pick six right before halftime.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
People thought the punter was point shaving. He just dropped
the ball.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
I heard Darry Noka say he was at a he had,
you know, he's at Oklahoma grad and he was at
a watch party with some friends and he said, at
seventeen seventeen, his friend was like, all right, man, we're
in this. Segoes. No, we're not losing. I know how
this plays.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
They're zero to five in playoff games, correct since the
playoffs has started.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
Yeah, I mean it was at first it was all
Lincoln Riley's fault. But I mean, you know what, Lincoln
Riley never did lost the home playoff game. Like you're
at home in Norman Friday night, sold out crowd. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Yeah, well, uh well, the congratulations to the A and
M volleyball team. They won the national championship.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
That's good. I tweeted out one of our.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
Shelby Coppage on SEC network right now.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yeah, with Peter Burns. Oh wow, the I said, at
least Aggie's won something of consequence this week. Yeah, that's good.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
National championship. That's counts. Maybe that plays.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Yeah, Shelby's become like the preeminent voice in volleyball.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
Yeah, I know she played for somebody Texas A and
M Corpus Christie or something. I can't crawl anyways, All right,
back to football stuff. You also have the Texans. We
were talking about that in the first hour. They defeat.
I almost said lose, because it just feels it almost
feels like a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. They've
won seven games in a row. It wasn't pretty, it
(39:08):
wasn't good in a pick six ended up being the
difference in the game. Offense not great. Ashton JENTI had,
I guess you gonna call that.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
He had his.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Second hundred yard game of the year, But as far
as his total yards had to be his biggest game
because he had that catch for sixty yards for a touchdown.
So he had a big breakout game against the Texans,
unfortunately missing disease all sha ear and he broke a
couple of big runs and c J. Stroud it was
like a unfortunately a far too often c J. Stroud performance.
(39:38):
He didn't cost in the game. He wasn't terrible, but
there were too many throws where we were sitting there
saying c J. Stroud should make this throw and he
didn't made the big one at the end, Nico Collins
with the big catch getting the elbow down. He finished
with four catches for fifty nine yards. But it just
wasn't enough offense, and we keep saying when is this
(39:58):
offense going to get into You've seen some flashes here
and there, some good games here and there. They have
won seven games in a row, so it is hard
to complain, but it just it doesn't Are we just
being spoiled to say this seven game win streak? Does
it feel that great?
Speaker 1 (40:16):
Yeah? I mean I was feeling pretty good before before
yesterday's game, like I thought, I thought they were starting
to play better. Yeah, you know, look, it had been
it had been a couple of weeks since before since
we threw Nick Kayley under the bus, like they found
a way up in Indy, they they found a way
out in Kansas City. Last week was just a beatdown
(40:38):
of Arizona. Everything clicked, and then this is the first
week I thought since really the Tennessee game that.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Time, that's the other game I would point to that
gig case makes you just cringe.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
Yeah, so it's been about a month since we criticizing
it Kaylee, but I think he deserves a lot of
criticism for that game plan yesterday, like put this way,
I didn't think. I didn't feel like cj went to
blame for the portal, like he didn't play great. I
thought a lot of it was war on play calling
and look not having what he marks. Juar Jordan did
(41:09):
his best, but like that, the run game was not great.
Yesterday averaged three yards of carry.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
Yeah, it's something I can't put is now Juwar Jordan.
It's not like he's got stick legs, but something I
can't quit put.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
My face like not fast.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
Yeah, it just doesn't feel right, And I want to
be nice to Juar Jordan, but it's almost like they
let like a UFL running back in the NFL is what.
It kind of feels like he's not bad. It just
feels like he's in tryouts and it's like, I don't
know if this guy's in. That's all.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
Well, the hope is what's what's the prognosis on Mark
should be back?
Speaker 2 (41:47):
So hopefully, I mean he was. I think he got
in unlimited practice on Friday, so hopefully he doesn't miss
too much time. And Nick Chubb was there, but I mean,
and he had that one big run, but other than that,
he was just in effect. I mean, if you're Nick Chubb,
how are you feeling that you just got replaced by
a dude off the practice squad. It was not even
(42:09):
that good of a runner. He came in and he
got fifteen carries to your son earlier in that he's
Nick Chubb is washed. Yeah, he's washed. And I know
there were remember preseason, there are people like thousand yard
season loading Nick Chubb. They got Nick Chubb and like guys,
he's been on the streets and this it was like
July or something when they signed him. I just read
the tea leaves, folks. He's got no juice in the
(42:30):
legs and He's a good runner, hard runner and smart,
but just that's that's not gonna get it done in
the NFL these days. All right, seven one three five
seven NINEY is the phone number kJ in Cyprus on
the phone lines here on the Matt Tom Show with Ross.
What's up Kjell?
Speaker 9 (42:49):
As you always listening in the background. Uh, A couple
of quick takes as you guys, you clearly stated this
doesn't seem like a victory Monday in regard to the Texas.
And I say that for a few reasons so far.
F CJ has been what he did is Ricky season,
(43:12):
when prior to the concussion, he was leading league in
yards packing per game. He had three or four interceptions
at that time. I mean, he was a rock star,
not just in Houston but in the NFL in general.
And you just haven't seen that. Again, I'm not saying
seeing it a time or two. You just CJ had
(43:32):
a swagger a confidence about him that you just don't
see anymore. And you couple that with the Aaron those
we've been seeing consistently. I look at some of the
younger quarterbacks in the league right now, the Trevor Lawrence,
who by the way, has done it a couple of
times this year. The boat Nixon's the Jordan loves. I'll
(43:53):
even put Kayleb Williams in that category. You've seen these
guys at different points during this season consistent he carries
their team to victories. Whereas we're here in Houston, we're
just basically hoping that the offense in general CJ in particular,
just doesn't mess it up. And we can't have that
line of thinking going into the off season, nor we're
(44:13):
gonna have to pay this man. I was hoping the
last five games of the season, we will laterally take
the top office, just open the office up and see
what we have under the hood. But they haven't done that.
So now we're going into this office season with more
question marks about the the quarterback position, not in regard
to getting rid of him, but exactly what we have.
And I want to ask you guys a couple of questions.
(44:35):
Who do you think is that fault for that? Is
that j is that the play call in? I know
that the easy answer is the combination of both, but
I genuinely want to get you guys's perspective on that.
And I also want to know what is Joe Mixon's
contract status with the Texans moving forward after this season
because he's hurt now, he had injury issues in Cincinnati,
(44:57):
And as much as I love Joe, you best have
been a availability. You can't help him from the hot
to And I'm not just a fan of the collection
and running back we have right now going into the
next season. So what do you what's the contract that
with Joe Mixon? And what do you think the thing
is if you had some points to something without sit
back and lift the Fellows letter.
Speaker 2 (45:15):
So I think Joe's I mean, Joe's got a year left, right, Yeah,
they have an out, but I don't know how much
would cost him A cut him. I don't think very much.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
His base is eight million next year, looks like two
million in dead cap money. Okay, so he's the one
they'll say ten point five million cap hit next year.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
So uh really, even if he's cut, it probably just
I don't know, Earn Wilson question, All right, we'll get
Aaron Wilson on that. But I just doesn't feel like
he's going to be back. And I like Woody Marx.
I feel like Woody Marx is like a change of pace,
third down back I don't feel like he's a belt.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
I think he's better than that. I think so we'll
put it this way. There are no bellcow backs anymore
outside of was It's Derek Henry, Jonathan Taylor, Christian McCaffer
I guess when he's healthy. But like I mean, there's
there's about five. Everybody else is splitting duty, you know
what I mean, Like even James von a Chan is
probably the number one James Cook, James Cook and Ball
(46:13):
in Buffalo, though they play Ray Davis a lot, like.
Speaker 2 (46:16):
It's a fair amount, but nobody does ninety percent of
the snaps. But I would say as much. Well, I
just say the lead back, like the lead dog role.
That not somebody who's splitting like a James Cook.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Yeah, but I feel like you could get a good
compliment with him you draft another young.
Speaker 2 (46:30):
Guy or Sakwuon Barkley. I'm trying to say, I'm just
looking up and down, but I'm just.
Speaker 1 (46:35):
Saying, like, more more now than ever, teams are very
much are closer to like sixty Fortyjon Robinson.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
I like Tyler Allergier plays a lot there, but Bjon's
kind of like the lead dog. Like I don't feel
like Woody Marks is a lead dog. Even I think
he's a fifty to fifty guy Max.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
Yeah, I just but I don't think he's just like
third down change of pace back. I think I think
he could be a fifty to fifty with another.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
Okay, i'd say fifty fifty backs definitely. What I'm saying
is I think you need running back help. You need somebody,
and Woody mars is gonna need somebody to help carry
the load if you're gonna keep him. I mean, he's
a fourth round rookie. He's cheap. That's fine, Joe Mix
and whatever. Maybe draft another guy in the third or
fourth round. You can get guys in the third or
fourth round who was especially at running back.
Speaker 1 (47:23):
I haven't guy at the scrap heap. Yes, I don't
understand why they don't.
Speaker 2 (47:27):
Jawar Jordan's not that bad.
Speaker 1 (47:29):
They don't take a chance on these undrafted roots. Like
that's what's crazy with Nick Casario is why they haven't
taken a chance more. And like I feel like every
offseason you should sign at least one or two undrafted
running backs and just see what what's there. Yeah, they
don't do that for some reason.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
I guess we can look around for like names who
uh names who are popping elsewhere that maybe Nick Cassario
should have been interested in. But you know, I mean
look and they're there's no guarantee even if you draft
a guy Ashton Genty was was supposed to be this
generational running back prospect and he's had a now yes yesterday,
(48:07):
no yesterday not was standing. That's a crappy He's had
a horrible year by any standard. I mean, he's only
averaging three and a half yards of carry. He's got
like seven hundred or I think he's got eight hundred
and twenty eight yards and left on the season. I
need him to be by the way, can we get
Ashton genty like one hundred and sixty something yards in
the next two weeks so he can get to a thousand.
Speaker 1 (48:25):
That's what I need. How about the guys who are
basically kind of becoming the number two on their teams?
J Cory krossky Merritt Washington, Well that's Chris Rodriguez her
but he's the he was picked number two forty five
this year, seventh rounder.
Speaker 2 (48:36):
Okay, he's good, but he's not He's not a game
changer though, what's the guy in Chicago? Kyle kyleman On
guys really good. He was a seventh round pack. Okay,
kyleman On guy has been good. But also he's been
splitting time with DeAndre Swift.
Speaker 1 (48:49):
Olie Gordon's sixth round pick for the Dolphins. How much
is he He's not playing much? He was.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
What he marks, of course, was a rock. I'm just saying,
like you're looking at guy from last year. Yeah, you
can find some people.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
That's the thing.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
Get another Woody Marks. Get get somebody with the I mean,
who can run with a little bit more power. I
like Woody Marks. I just don't love what he marks.
Speaker 1 (49:09):
That's all. I think.
Speaker 2 (49:09):
You do need to address the running back the running
back room in this offseason in some way, shape or form.
You we don't even know what this is. This injury
from from Joe Mixon. We can't judge like how how much.
If it was like an achilles or something like that,
I don't want him back at all. But if it
was just, oh, he broke his foot and he's gonna
be fine next year, I would be more open to
(49:30):
something like that, depending on you know what, if they
were going to restructure a contract or something like that.
But being so in the dark, it's really tough to
have an opinion on whether or not I want Joe
Mixon back.
Speaker 1 (49:40):
How about this three guys that were undrafted in the
twenty twenty three draft that of all played roles this year.
Uh De Marcato with Arizona Mary Demarcado is back up.
Emmanuel Wilson good when Jones has been hurt at Sean
Tucker and Ty Jacobs say against Sean n. Tucker, he's
like a goal lineback, but he had that big week,
(50:00):
like two hundred yards or something.
Speaker 2 (50:02):
So I mean you can find and yeah, for sure,
but yeah, I mean Dario Guombalwallee has been a good,
good third down contributor and stuff like that. You can
find guys, but I think, especially the way I think
CD Shroud needs as much help as he can get
and a dynamic running game would be awesome. And things
were a lot better for him in his rookie season
(50:22):
when Joe Mixon was one of the best running backs
in football. That helps out so absolutely. Jalen Warren was
undrafted good running backs. I like Jalen Warren, but he's
been spending time with Kennick Gamewell too. So yeah, that
what I'm talking about. Fifty fifty backs, Yeah, I get
a couple good fifty fifty backs, get a good running game,
get some lightning and some thunder. Whatever you don't necessarily need,
David Montgomery, Jamior Gibbs, but something that where you can
(50:45):
you can have a good, credible running game week after week.
All right, time for a quick break here on The
Matt Thomas Show with Ross Without Matt Thomas, we got
to tell the truth coming up at eleven thirty. I've
written three opinions. I gotta write one more. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety is the phone
number if you want to get in seven one.
Speaker 1 (51:06):
Maybe I'll put a running back thing in there.
Speaker 2 (51:07):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number. We'll keep it going here with you
until two o'clock. We also got the news at noon
coming up and at eleven thirty to tell the truth
here on Sports Talk seven ninety eleven twenty in the am.
Here on Sports Talk seven ninety, The Man Thomas Show
with Ross Tom Matt Thomas. On a holiday week The
(51:32):
Rocket's Back on Christmas Day. I missed it, but I
kind of don't because I will be working pre postgame show.
But that comes with the territory when uh, I don't
want to go full Aaron Andrews on you.
Speaker 1 (51:44):
I'm missing all these holidays is the worst? No, it's
a Nike game.
Speaker 2 (51:47):
I know you get all the Christmas even most of
Christmas Day. I know I'll have a couple eggnogs and
start the postgame show.
Speaker 1 (51:53):
Can't wait? Maybe when's the action happened on Christmas Day
in the morning?
Speaker 3 (51:56):
Right?
Speaker 1 (51:57):
No?
Speaker 2 (51:57):
No, I don't know what kind of family you got.
You don't open your gifts in the morning and do
no under the tree stuff. No Christmas And I'm just kidding. No,
I think you normally just Christmas, but uh you do
one morning Christmas somewhere and one afternoon Christmas. The other
come on, divorce a family. Let's go gotta be partying
(52:19):
all day.
Speaker 1 (52:20):
See we used to always growing up, we always did
Christmas Eve night. We did everything, so Christmas everything Christmas
Eve night. Yeah, that's what some people largely nothing. Some
people do one present Christmas Eve. Yeah, well we would
do the opposite, maybe save one more gift on Christmas Day.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
M Oh you do so open all the presents Christmas
Eve and then have one Christmas present. That's interesting. I
haven't heard that one.
Speaker 1 (52:47):
Or we do the some some years we do midnight Mass. Oh,
I've been to midnight Mass in my day. Little lip,
a lot of bloodshot eyes.
Speaker 2 (52:58):
Yeah, get little sacrament wine, wet sacraminor twelve forty five.
It's good for the soul. It's good for the soul,
all right. Seven three two two five seven ninety is
the phone number if you want to get in Rockets.
That line is already posted. By the way, Rockets are
two and a half point favorites at the Los Angeles Lakers. Gosh,
(53:18):
how are we feeling about the state of the Rockets
right now? By the way, seventeen and nine? Because when
I left before vacation last week, I talked about how
there was just cloud over me and I was trying
to get rid of it, but it was the Oklahoma
City thunder cloud. Like the Rockets kept on winning and
winning and winning, but it's like, I can't even be
excited about it because the Oklahoma City thunder are a
(53:39):
death star. Now, since then, you've had the thunder lose
a couple of more games. So I'm feeling a little
bit better about that. But also the Rockets have been
losing to teams like the Pelicans and the Sacramento King
So there's a cloud over me there.
Speaker 1 (53:54):
Yeah, I mean, I know the numbers say that they're
still top five in as a defensive team.
Speaker 2 (54:00):
What's the I think there's still the point differential might
still be like number two in basketball.
Speaker 1 (54:05):
Yeah, they're number three in scoring, they're number four in
points allowed. Okay, so they're top five in both, but
and there's still number one rebounding, number two point differential.
I feel like when they don't have Steven Adams, they
are not The defense is not as stout.
Speaker 3 (54:24):
Yes, I.
Speaker 2 (54:27):
Agree with that, and I mean that's just how it's
gonna be. Clinton Pel's gonna have to step up into
these back to backs, and he's not what he wants was,
which is crazy to say.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
Just Materiel old.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
Because I remember him being like a young rookie and
developing and growing and becoming like a really good lob
threat slash switchable five on those Rockets teams with James
Hard and Chris Paul and being actually a very good
key piece of those as far as a role player,
not like he was dropping twenty a night or anything
like that. And now he's not what he once was.
(55:00):
But it's just I need to see some more Rockets
wins very soon. The Nuggets one was nice, for sure,
but I mean it was just it was sandwiched in
between a loss of the Pelicans.
Speaker 1 (55:11):
And the Kings. All on the road.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
It's a very long road trip, second half of back
to back. You're on this man and six game trip
and all that stuff. But it's just difficult, man, It's difficult.
Speaker 1 (55:20):
Yeah, you should have won the loss in Denver, fun
the blowout lost to Dallas, fine, but the New Orleans
game of the Sacramento game, you should have finished. This
is why you have a Kevin Durant to be able
to finish, and he could not finish. And also Alpi,
oh my god. Like as good as he is, he
(55:41):
has stretches where I mean just absolutely clueless with the
basketball and then turning to the refs and bitching and like, dude,
play the get your head out of your ass and
in the game. And yeah, you turn the ball over,
but get back how many times this team will turn
the ball over and there's no help defensive.
Speaker 2 (55:59):
Leagus do a little bit of I mean extra as
far as complaining to the referees and throwing his hands
up when I'm and yeah, there are just feels like
a couple of times every game you're like age, get
back on defense. You didn't get the call. We got
to move along, let's go. And he also I think
he is the king of calling for challenges of things
where there's no chance they're gonna win a challenge.
Speaker 1 (56:22):
I mean, I am.
Speaker 2 (56:23):
Confidence outprunching good, but he's always he's always wearing his
wrist in a circle, trying to get them to try
to challenge something that's not a challenge.
Speaker 1 (56:31):
Well, how about yesterday they was a Sacramento had used
their challenges and then Russell Westbrook at the final minute
calling for a challenge, like, you don't have anymore, bro,
you use them?
Speaker 2 (56:41):
Yeah, I'm just it's I don't want to save it.
Maybe I'll say I mean, I don't want to say it.
I'm gonna save it for the next segment.
Speaker 1 (56:53):
But okay, how about this?
Speaker 2 (56:57):
There were people who have said this team still needs
to report card, yes, or do they need to go
bigger game hunting? What's the latest? I was out of
town for a week. What's the latest on you since
the Kompom possibly getting moved.
Speaker 1 (57:10):
Quiet. I haven't heard anything.
Speaker 2 (57:11):
All quiet on the Gianni's front.
Speaker 1 (57:14):
I haven't heard anything.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
Okay, Well, let's get Larry in spring real quick ahead
of to tell the truth coming up in the next second.
Speaker 1 (57:19):
What's up, Larry?
Speaker 3 (57:21):
Hey? How you all doing, Row?
Speaker 1 (57:22):
I'm doing great, Larry good good good man.
Speaker 3 (57:26):
Say man, okay, you watched your game yesterday, right, yes, okay?
The head referee number one? All right? You know the
one that announces all.
Speaker 1 (57:40):
The calls, you know, yeah, the crew chief.
Speaker 3 (57:44):
Yeah, he was number one, and he was the one
that would you know, speak over the mic whatever. The
call was right, and I was looking at him. You
remember Charlie Perulo.
Speaker 2 (57:58):
Yes, I do remember Charlie. You think it looked like Charlie.
You had to look at it, man, I thought, I
don't remember who the referee was, honestly.
Speaker 3 (58:10):
But oh just look. Replayed the game and I was
wanting to be again a referee in job.
Speaker 2 (58:17):
I didn't know you thought Charlie Polo was an NBA referee. No, oh,
NFL you're doing for the Texans.
Speaker 3 (58:30):
Check it out, well, check it out, man, You know
I don't know why check it out.
Speaker 2 (58:35):
Uh huh. I watched that game too, and I don't
remember thinking a guy looks like I'm trying to find
their numbers. All right, Larry, we'll do some investigating on that.
Speaker 1 (58:44):
I appreciate.
Speaker 2 (58:47):
Where's the referees listed by Jersey numbers? Scott Novak is anything?
He's trying to say?
Speaker 1 (58:54):
I guess, so.
Speaker 2 (58:57):
Let me look, I get you know, not really you
sure he doesn't really look like Charlie Plo. I guess
it looks like they could be cousins. That's freaking hilarious.
All right, not note, We're gonna take a break. Ray,
we see you on hold. We do have to get
to tell the truth. We'll get to you though. You
(59:18):
guys want to get in you can seven one three, two,
one two five, seven ninety Coming up next, I will
have four opinions, but I will only believe one. That's
coming up on to tell the Truth next on Sports
Talk seven ninety in the Matt tom Show with Ross.
Speaker 1 (59:41):
I never know why you don't know? Eleven to thirty four.
Here on a Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 2 (59:59):
Ninety The Matt Thomas Show with Ross a Monday staple segments.
Speaker 1 (01:00:06):
I will give you, guys four opinions. I only believe.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
One of them, Chris Gordy, and you have to decide
which one I believe, Jonathan, how many do I believe?
Speaker 10 (01:00:20):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:00:20):
All right, I get confused too, so I'm not gonna
get mad at y'all. When you'll get confused.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
It makes sense when you when you remember it's called
to tell the truth. Yes, there's only one truth will match,
which is it up every week? And that's how I
get confused every time I do it, because I understand
why he does it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
It's hard to come up with like fake ones that
are believable, But I digress. Okay, folks, opinion the number
one this weekend has convinced me you felt like it
was coming. I'm talking about the Texas A and m Aggie's.
(01:00:55):
Mike Elco has been a coach for as long as
he has. He wasn't that good at Duke fell apart
his first season at A and m fell apart his
second season at A and M. The Texas A and
M fighting Aggies will not win a national championship with
(01:01:16):
Mike Elko as their head coach. They could do it
with someone else, but it is not going to happen
with Mike Elko doesn't have the track record, doesn't do
well enough in close games. This year was a function
of the schedule. I think it's going to be more
like closer to what last year was going forward for
Mike Elko, and he will be fired disgracefully and probably
(01:01:37):
get a big payout.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
Opinion number two.
Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
All Right, I know it looked bad for the Houston Texans,
but I think you can get enough out of CJ. Stroud.
They have beaten the Bills on this win streak they
have been on. They beat the Chiefs before Pat Mahomes
snapped his whole body in half. They have some really
good wins on this seven game winning streak. I don't
think they're gonna be Super Bowl good, but I think
(01:02:06):
for the first time in Texans history, they're gonna make
an AFC Championship game. The defense is good enough, Woody
Marks is gonna come back. They're gonna be fine. Offensively
not good, but they're gonna basically win a bunch of
twenty one to nineteen games and make their first AFC
Championship game. But I don't think they go any further
than that first AFC Championship game.
Speaker 1 (01:02:30):
For the Houston Texans number three. This is gonna be.
Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
Something that hurts my heart to say out loud, but
I believe it. Will must Champ, defensive coordinator for the
Texas Longhorns. It's not gonna work out. I don't know
why this move was made. I like Pete Kwatowski. I
think the defense has been very good the last two years. Yes,
there was some slippitches this year, but that's because they
(01:02:57):
were on the field so much. With this offense. The
day and age for Will must Champ as a type
of coach that's gone. You can't have these fiery guys
who are screaming at everyone and throwing chairs at eight
in the morning and punching the whiteboard and yelling. These
dudes are pulling up to the meeting rooms in Lamborghinis. Okay,
(01:03:20):
Will must Champ, Ain't nobody got time to be hearing
you screaming bloody murder at everyone and treating people like
children anymore. Will must Champ is gonna get tuned out
by these players who are making hundreds of thousands of dollars.
It's not gonna work out with him as a defensive
coordinator at the University of Texas. That is opinion number three.
(01:03:41):
Opinion number four, We're going deep into the archives, folks.
We're bringing up baseball, which we haven't talked about all
sho long. However, there was a trade made when I
was out. Mike Burrows was traded for the Houston Astros,
and so I got to thinking, and I was pulling
up their rotation, and I'm like, this is according to
(01:04:03):
Fangrass roster resource Hunter Brown nice, Christian Javier Lanso colors juner,
Mike Burrows will see and Ryan Wise who came from
the Korean League and is twenty nine years old. Then
we're talking about jose Al two vea declining. Can Jeremy
pain your replicate a breakout year? Carls Korea is a
(01:04:26):
year older house he suck Parade's leg, Christian Walker's older.
It hurts me to say the Astros are not winning
the American League West. Maybe they can make the playoffs.
I'm not gonna take that off the table just yet. Yeah,
bullpen question marks as well. The Houston Astros will not
(01:04:48):
win the American League West in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 1 (01:04:53):
That is my opinion number four.
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
So to recap Aggie's cannot win an Sational Championship under
Mike Elco. He doesn't have the track record Raiders. Notwithstanding,
the Texas will make their first AFC Championship game Will
must Champ bad higher for the Texas Longhorns. That is
not going to work out, and the Houston Astros will
not win the American League West.
Speaker 4 (01:05:22):
Fellas discuss all right, Gordy, help me out here with
number three? Is Will must Tamp that bad?
Speaker 1 (01:05:29):
No, I'll tell you playing simple, So only one of
these is true for the first time Texans will make
the AFC Championship. I believe Ross doesn't believe that, right,
Will must Champ will not work out. I think he
does not believe that. I think he believes Will must
Champ will be a very good DC. Astros will not
win the AL West. I think that's a fair assessment.
(01:05:56):
But A and M will not win a championship with
Mike Elco. Ross's Aggie Hay him self. That's gotta be
the true one. That's gotta be the true one. I'm
gonna go with A.
Speaker 4 (01:06:08):
I'm that Astro is very I'm gonna I think Ross
believe is not gonna win the West, so West is
very good. But and man has kept everybody too. Yeah,
I'm gonna I'm gonna stay with the Astros.
Speaker 3 (01:06:20):
Well, I am.
Speaker 2 (01:06:23):
Somewhat wary of the will muss Champ Higher. I do
think there are concerns with me of him getting tuned
out by the players, But they're still pretty young and
probably receptive to coaching. So I'm not saying it's not
gonna work out. But I was puzzled by the Higher,
So you guys were right to dismiss that one. Next one, yeah,
I felt like it was the weakest one of the bunch.
(01:06:45):
I mean, the Texans can make the AFC Championship game,
but to declare they're making the championship game, I think
is a little bit much. And then the last, but
not least, Mike Outco is a good enough coach, So
as long as you continue to get him players, you
could probably win a national championship. They got close enough
(01:07:07):
this year. You get him a couple more players, they
can do it. Yeah, I think you could as much
as anybody, as much as sark or as much as
Lane Kiffin, or as much as Kailn Debor you can't.
I'm not saying that it's gonna happen. I'm not saying
he's national championship caliber. Is Joey Maguire the greatest coach
on the planet. No, you get Texas Tech, a bunch
of players, and then he's gonna be fine. So I mean,
(01:07:29):
Ryan Day was on his way out at Ohio State
because he couldn't beat Michigan, and then he wins a
national championship. I think he's to the level of where
the players are good enough, and you have good enough assistance,
you'll be fine. So it hurts me to say I
don't think the Astros are winning the American League West.
I don't think it's likely that Mike Ouko wins a championship,
(01:07:50):
But I don't think. My phrase was they cannot win
a national championship with Mike Calco, which I don't believe.
Good job, Jonathan, you want it's the longest dry it's
in like five weeks. Oh really, I don't think this
one counts though. It's like a it's like a substitute.
Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
For a spring game.
Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
I like that, all right. Still don't believe that Ross
believes the Act can compete for a champion.
Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
I think they can't. I mean, look, they were in
the playoff this year, it could happen. You just gotta
get them a bunch of players, and you gotta get
anybody a bunch of Yeah, exactly, but get everybody. I mean,
that's it's I just think it's so wide open for anyone.
For me to completely dismiss him, to say they cannot
win with him, I think is wrong. Thirteen years in
the SEC, they still haven't even played for a conference champion. Yeah,
(01:08:37):
it's a shame. Couldn't happened to a nicer program. All Right,
We're gonna have a nicer fan base too. It's not
like they gloat and prene all the time. I'd not
even winning and keep adding championships to a stadium. Anyways,
We're gonna take quick break here on The Man Tabas
Show with Ross Corny continues to hang out. We Got
the News at Noon with Jonathan Allen. Wink wink, listen
Listen News at Noon with Jonathan Allen. Make up Next
(01:09:01):
here on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Ray will
get to you as well. Anybody else want to get
in and react to anything I had to say or
you have to say for what happened over the weekend
in sports. Seven to one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
ninety All right, go San Francisco forty nine ers Houston, Texas?
(01:09:30):
Is that correct? And clench a playoff spot?
Speaker 1 (01:09:33):
Believe that's what I read?
Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
Yeah, okay, but they'll still be fighting for seeding as
they have a couple more games left. I mean, it's
not gonna work out for them with the AFC South
Jaguars are a game up, plus they're playing the Colts
and then the Titans. I mean, that's probably gonna end
up being a couple of gimmeas. But we'll see Chargers
(01:09:56):
on the road Texans one and a half point dogs
that game, and then the Colts to end the season.
The time is still TBD on that, but I don't
think it's gonna end up being any sort of Sunday
night football thing or anything.
Speaker 1 (01:10:08):
Like that, So I gotta go ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:10:09):
Guest twelve new for Texans Colts for the last week
of the season, but that he has yet to be announced.
They beat the Raiders yesterday twenty three to twenty one.
Was it pretty ash and genty had a big game.
He had the fifty yard run, he had the sixty
yard catch touchdowns on both of those. Geno Smith did
throw the pick six and it was enough for the
(01:10:30):
Texans to get the twenty three to twenty one victory.
You guys want to get in You can talk about
anything you'd like. Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven to one three two one two five
seven ninety. We have the news at noon with Jonathan
Allen coming up at twelve. But right now, Ray in
Miami has been holding patiently. Ray, the floor is yours.
Speaker 11 (01:10:52):
Hi, how you doing.
Speaker 1 (01:10:52):
Welcome back, Ross, Thank you, it's good to be back.
Speaker 11 (01:10:55):
You remember you remember I was the tag back here
from the spring. He attacking again this morning.
Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Oh what happened?
Speaker 11 (01:11:04):
Gary doesn't like me saying anything negative.
Speaker 9 (01:11:07):
About the Texans.
Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
And I said that before I even got on.
Speaker 11 (01:11:11):
The call, Ross, I was behind him and he was
then was trying to stay on the phone, and he
hung up the phone. He doesn't want to hear my tape.
But Gary, let me tell you something. If you can't
score until the fourth quarter, legitimately against the Raiders, we're
not gonna win. Gary. And once again, like I said
to Coldingham, they were getting boom, Gary, they were getting boomed,
(01:11:34):
not the defense, but the offense, I don't know what's
up with. Isn't Brad from Spring? What's up with these
weirdos in Spring Texas? You have to be able to
be a good fan, Gary, not a cry baby. I
know the mcmars love people like you because you're gonna
sell sixty five thousand out because you're just gonna go.
But you have to call out what's wrong?
Speaker 3 (01:11:57):
CJ.
Speaker 11 (01:11:57):
I don't know what's going on.
Speaker 3 (01:11:58):
But it's the throws bad that the well he.
Speaker 11 (01:12:02):
Had like twelve yards, it was horrible. I don't like
the offense gameplay. That's all I'm trying to explain to myself.
Speaker 3 (01:12:09):
That's to Gary.
Speaker 11 (01:12:10):
I mean, that's it is nothing. And let me tell
you something, Brothers. If Dan open those two phone lines
like he said he would do, I'll eat you up
in a debate about the Texans, Gary, and it's gonna
only be about the offense. You better hope and praise
that Dan and Cole don't open both phone lines and
let us get on. I'll eat you a lit bro
(01:12:31):
because you just called me name and I dropped from Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:12:35):
Oh maybe we'll get this scheduled ray.
Speaker 11 (01:12:37):
You got to you gotta Twitter, Yeah, I'll send you
to you right now.
Speaker 2 (01:12:42):
Boy, Gary probably didn't have a Twitter. I don't know
if he has a computer.
Speaker 11 (01:12:46):
Garys sitting in a case complaining about people. Who's complaining? Gary?
We're complaining because we're upset about it. We want a
Super Bowl Gary. I don't want them to go to
New England and get him Harris. But CJ cannot keep
up with running up and down the field touchdown for
touchdown with probably both Nicks. Look you look at Trevor
(01:13:10):
Lawrence beat the Broncos. We should have beat the Broncos.
You know, it seems just a small thing. And CJ,
you keep saying, I just gotta do this.
Speaker 9 (01:13:18):
I just got When are you gonna do it?
Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
I just gotta do this. I just have to do that.
Speaker 11 (01:13:23):
Those are excused. You didn't ready to get paid a
lot of money. I need production come out.
Speaker 1 (01:13:29):
Yeah, thanks a lot, Ray, It's yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
If you look yesterday, they got they won the turnover
battle one to zero, and that one turned into seven
points and you won the game by two. They got
out gained by the Raiders in total yards three fifteen
to two seventy. They did have more first downs, but
it just felt like a very even game against a
(01:13:53):
team that's had two wins all season. They have no
reason to really play for anything, and they just lost
thirty one to zero the previous week. Maybe you could
argue that's what they had to fight for, is to
not get embarrassed that bad and come out and show
some pride and do that on the road.
Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
But it just.
Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
It just didn't look good out there for the Texans.
But as you said earlier, Gordy, I mean, they looked
a lot better against the Cardinals the week before before that,
you beat the Chiefs, Colts.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
And Bills.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
I mean that was a run of games where we
were saying, hopefully they can go two and one, even
one and two is okay, and they went three and
oho in those games. Like, yeah, they've all been close.
But this is still a really good Texans team. But
it just yesterday didn't inspire a whole lot of confidence.
Speaker 1 (01:14:39):
And I'll tell you right now, I mean, going to
outel Lay to play the Chargers, you gotta bring your
you gotta bring your a game. With the offense, it's
gonna have look you hope the defense can hold their own.
I'm just telling you right now, Chargers, justin Herbert's been
awesome this year, and that run game has been very good.
They just got Omar and I emptied back.
Speaker 2 (01:15:01):
Yeah, he was running very well.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
He was running very well yesterday. I mean, Keenan Allen
still is like the fountain of Youth. He just keeps
catching balls.
Speaker 3 (01:15:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:15:09):
Quentin Johnson's good, and they got Lad McConkie, who's given
the Texans issues before. So yeah, it's and you're going
on the road to play them, even though I mean
it is a Los Angeles Chargers, so it's not like
it's the most rabid home environments that you're gonna face
or anything like that. But you're one and a half
point Dogs'll be a good test. I'm looking forward to
this one so totally. Your defense could hold them to
(01:15:31):
twenty four. Do you think the Texans offense can score well?
Vegas will tell you no because the total is thirty
nine and a half, so that would be squeezed. That
means the implied totals are around like twenty one or
twenty two for the Chargers. I will say, if you
can hold them, a twenty four might not be enough.
(01:15:52):
I'm just being honest. I mean, they scored forty against
the Cardinals. But before that, they've had twenty three this week,
twenty twenty, twenty three, sixteen, and then thirty six with
Davis Mills against Jaguars. So, I mean, history tells me
five of the last six weeks they have not been
able to score more than twenty four points. So yeah,
it's a concern. If you say twenty four, I'm gonna
(01:16:14):
say the Texans lose. I wish I didn't say that
out loud. If you say twenty, I'm saying we got
a shot. Yeah, that's just that's a tough ass that
you're gonna hold. You're gonna hold that offense to Yeah, twenty. Uh,
look at what they've done. Well, I guess.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Jaguars did beat them thirty five to six, but they
scored thirty one against the Raiders.
Speaker 2 (01:16:37):
Wars are scared. I'm starting to get scared of the Jaguars.
And I didn't think I was gonna say that this year.
Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
But yeah, maybe maybe I'm just living in having watched
that whole Cowboys Chargers game yesterday, because the Chiefs did
hold them to sixteen, Eagles held them to twenty two.
Speaker 2 (01:16:54):
Yeah, Cowboys have the worst defense on the planet, So
maybe that could that make me feel little better? Al Right,
Renfro in most ahead of the top of the r
what's up?
Speaker 1 (01:17:01):
Rent fro.
Speaker 9 (01:17:04):
All right, we got guys, hey GUARDI hey man, Guardy
you know football so guardian, you know, and you just
don't want to see it. But you know, our offensive
scheme and offensive play calling is horrible. I mean, come on,
guarded uh CJ knitting throws and everything, especially when you're
missing clothes. But there's no pressure, you know, so uh
(01:17:27):
I just don't I grief the other calling. The play
calling is horrible, and until we get that sewed up,
the defense is definitely gonna do just what we did yesterday.
They gonna they're gonna be in and break because you're
on the field. As long as they've been on the
field with these drives, we got problems. So I'm I'm
in good with what the last call is there. Our
(01:17:49):
problem is our defense is gonna get broken down if
we can't at least on our offensive scheme sustained drives.
All right, Guardon, check it out and thank you, Gordy.
Speaker 1 (01:18:00):
You want to react to that, Gordy, Well, yeah, the
the the play calling has certainly been an issue, you know,
I still Nickklee has not bought any buy in for
me this this year. But again, it's a combination of everything.
You gotta crap run game and you can't be one dimensional.
(01:18:22):
You gotta be able to I.
Speaker 2 (01:18:24):
Mean, you're also trotting out Jawar Jordan and Nick Chubb.
I mean that's and oh, by the way, both your
tackles got hurt yesterday. I know what's the latest on
everybody is there as far as Ursery and Trent Brown
going down, So that that's something certainly to monitor and
another reason why I wouldn't call for them to go
to the AFC Championship game. I know what's going on
with this tackle play, Like you start to get a
(01:18:46):
little bit more continuity on the offensive line, and then
both your guys go down yesterday. So that has definitely
something a monitor for the Texans as they hit the
road to take on the Los Angeles Chargers. All Right, quick,
top of the hour break here on the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross Chris Gordy has been hanging out. Appreciate him.
Jonathan Allen here as well. He's gonna bring you the
news at noon coming up next here on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (01:19:07):
Ninety's The Mat Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
Our number three of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Without Matt Thomas. He is out traveling with the Houston Rockets.
He will be back tomorrow in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (01:19:26):
I believe.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Rockets in Sacramento last night today traveling to Los Angeles.
They will have the Clippers on Tuesday. Some are calling
it a must win game against the Clippers. And then
on Thursday night on ABC Slash ESPN, it's the Rockets
and the Lakers NBA action on Christmas Day. It's good
(01:19:50):
to be back on Christmas to have a big Rockets game.
We'll have it, of course for you here on Sports
Talk seven ninety and yours truly will be on the
pre and postgame coverage there. But right now we have
to get to all the top sports news items of
the day. It is a segment we simply call the
News at noon with Jonathan Allen. Hey, Jonathan, how are you?
(01:20:13):
I haven't talked to you much?
Speaker 1 (01:20:14):
Are you still?
Speaker 2 (01:20:15):
Are you still glowing from your victory? On to tell
the truth?
Speaker 4 (01:20:19):
You know, over Chris Gordy, my voice fels that, you know,
I feel like a new man, you know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (01:20:23):
Well you do.
Speaker 1 (01:20:25):
That's good. I'll tell you it's been a long drow.
It was like six weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:20:27):
Hey, by the way, can I make a request? Okay,
Christmas music the rest of the way. I meant to
tell you before, all.
Speaker 1 (01:20:32):
Right, because Christmas music gonna do it. I don't know what,
you know what.
Speaker 2 (01:20:37):
Actually, I'm making all the picks. I'm picking my favorites, Okay.
I love Christmas music. I was driving to Dallas because
I went to last week. Last week, I was all
over the place. I went to Lake Charles to the
Golden Nugget for a little bit. Shout out to Jared
cart Uh taking care of us over there, and things
went quite well for me. I'm just gonna put it
that way.
Speaker 12 (01:20:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:20:59):
I went to the seventy millimeter imax. I've seen one
battle after another and sinners. So are you do you
know what's seventy millimeter imaxes?
Speaker 1 (01:21:07):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:21:07):
Yeah, okay, So those are like the those are the big,
the big, big imaxes. It's like five stories high and
they have to get like the projection. It's actually on film,
it's not digital. So and they had the five minute
prologue of the Odyssey, which was awesome. That's coming out
next year. The Christopher Nolan film Dude, like in the
(01:21:28):
music Dude, that's what I like. First of all, like film.
I'm a film enthusiast. Second of all, you can't beat
going to the movies and you get the five story high,
seventy millimeter imax, which there's only two I think in Texas.
There's one in San Antonio, there's one in Dallas, and
Dallas was the only one that had the really release
(01:21:48):
of One Battle after Another and Sinners. So I watch
both in one day and it was like, it's like
bone rattling music. It's five story high, it's sawsome.
Speaker 1 (01:21:59):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:21:59):
I just it's a great experience.
Speaker 1 (01:22:01):
They did well.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
Mine was kind of broken it the decline. They were
reclined too far, like I was on the feet of
the people behind me. I felt bad.
Speaker 4 (01:22:08):
I'm not going to start off that I got my
I got my reclient share on.
Speaker 1 (01:22:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
No, they're like older. It's an older theater. That's why normally,
normally it's an older theater. They have these giant imax
so they don't build them anymore in the new theaters
because they're just too big and they don't make it
doesn't make any sense to them. So it is rare
to find a theater that's actually showing these things. So
that's why there's only two of them in all of Texas.
But Christopher Nolan makes the big Imax. Paul Thomas anders
(01:22:32):
And made the big Imax, and then The Sinners was
also It wasn't all Imax, but the one battle after
another was one hundred percent in like the full screen Imax,
which is awesome. It was a great experience.
Speaker 4 (01:22:41):
It sounds like a great experience. I'm not gonna lie.
I'm all right.
Speaker 3 (01:22:44):
What's so?
Speaker 2 (01:22:45):
Yeah, good to be back. Vacation was nice. You know
I normally say really good to be back, and I'm
happy to be back and I missed work.
Speaker 1 (01:22:51):
But I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:22:52):
Maybe I'm in holiday moode already.
Speaker 3 (01:22:53):
Yeah, it's okay.
Speaker 9 (01:22:54):
Though.
Speaker 2 (01:22:55):
At the Wednesday we got to talk about appreciate Chris
Gordy hanging out anyway. You know what, what should we
be talking about, Jonathan? What's on the news.
Speaker 4 (01:23:05):
Let's recap. Texans takedown the Raiders in a very ugly win,
twenty three to twenty one, making them ten and five
for the season.
Speaker 3 (01:23:12):
C J.
Speaker 4 (01:23:13):
Stroud going for twenty three thirty five for one eighty
seven yards and a TV jah Warrd Jordan first start, right,
I believe just got signed.
Speaker 2 (01:23:21):
Yeah, first start, Yes, Jawar Jordan.
Speaker 4 (01:23:23):
He was on rough game, fifteen carries and you know,
fifty three yards. It's not terrible how he feel about
how he feel about the game. In gener we haven't
got to like.
Speaker 2 (01:23:31):
I know, we hear ray, but it wasn't pretty and
and it feels like we keep it in the in
the NFL. I said this earlier with Chris Gordon. In
the NFL, you can catch lighting in a bottle at
any point. And the Texans do have that capability, Like
they have the tools. They have an all time dominant
defense at least all time for their organization. I mean
(01:23:52):
it's it's the best defense that they've ever had.
Speaker 1 (01:23:55):
Then you have CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:23:56):
Stroud, Nico Collins, you get what he marks back. You
have some similance of a run game. And we'll see
what happens with these offensive line injuries. Like they can
make a run. They can make a run to the
super Bowl. It is possible, is it probable? Not exactly
right now, but you've got a big game coming up
against the Chargers, and you can kind of wash this
one of this taste out of your mouth, because that's
(01:24:18):
they were able to do with the last time where
we felt this bad about the team was they went
on a road and they looked horrible against Titans. Then
they beat the Bills, beat the Colts with Daniel Jones
still healthy in that game, and then also beat the
Chiefs before before Pat Mahomes went down for good. Like
Pat Mahomes was the only Chief to throw a pass
(01:24:39):
in that game. It was before Gardner Minshew started playing,
and he had his worst game of his entire career.
So this defense win fully healthy kit like had Josh
Allen would to look like a rookie and had Pat
Mahomes with the worst game of his career, that tells
me they can beat anybody. But also, if let's say
a ball bounced their way in a way last week
(01:25:01):
where they got the pick six against Derek Singling, what
if a ball doesn't pass your way and C. J.
Stroud gives up a pick six or they get a
couple of short fields and you got to hold them there.
If you're getting field goals and touchdowns off of that,
that's the only thing that happens. If everything stays equal,
the Texans can beat anyone. But what about winning when
things don't go your way? What about winning when you
lose the turnover battle and you have a couple of
(01:25:21):
bad penalties and still coming through The Texans can win
on script? Can they win off script? Do they have
the offense to do that? Where either a the defense
is having an off day or b they're giving up
some turnovers and gifting points the other way, or you
know a big return where the special teams is giving
up a touchdown or something like that. That's the question.
(01:25:42):
Can you be a win through those battles when it's
not your day? And I don't feel super confident about
that about the Texans right now.
Speaker 4 (01:25:51):
Shroud's gotta do a little better than one A seven's.
But not to the next topic. Another kind of ugly
rockets fail to capitalize over the exact recamento Kings leading
seventy three percent of the game and falling in ot
to one twenty five. Yeah this not if you, as
asked my personal on paying about these rockets. We need
(01:26:13):
a ball handy man, we need we need someone coming
down the court to help this out, because this is
what I think I just saw it's the fourth overtime
in five games something like that. We can't close out
games anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:26:24):
Yeah, not great. I actually wanted to hear see what
uh listen to this of how how this sounded.
Speaker 9 (01:26:31):
Or not?
Speaker 1 (01:26:32):
Computer not working?
Speaker 2 (01:26:33):
That's fine, shrewder.
Speaker 1 (01:26:35):
It was right for the Roses.
Speaker 10 (01:26:37):
Top of the key, right elbow layup coming.
Speaker 1 (01:26:40):
Up, No, shrewder, left side three.
Speaker 10 (01:26:42):
It is up it god quick, two point two seconds left.
The Rosy eave up to two for the long three
and it's a king lead.
Speaker 1 (01:26:52):
Of one one twenty five, one, twenty four. Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:26:57):
You know what, I gotta get mad at props there
you you call the games. But he wasn't like he
made the call. This sucks. This is the worst he
was his own. Okay, yeah, okah, very nice, very good
professional call from Matthew Thomas, who just texted, actually he
wants to join the show at twelve thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:27:13):
You know what, Okay, we can go ahead and do that.
Speaker 2 (01:27:15):
Twelve thirty you'll hear from Matt Thomas in Los Angeles
as the Rockets take on the Clippers. All right, what
else is on the news at noon? Mister Allen?
Speaker 1 (01:27:26):
Justin? I know Gordy brought this up earlier.
Speaker 4 (01:27:28):
Notre Dame ends their longtime annual series with USC for
BYU their precious rivally ends and it's been going on
since nineteen twenty six.
Speaker 1 (01:27:38):
I did not know that. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
I was they played every single year since then.
Speaker 1 (01:27:42):
I believe so.
Speaker 4 (01:27:43):
Yes, it's been every single year since nineteen twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Wow, I keep calling it the gilded Chilele. I guess
it's the jeweled Chilely.
Speaker 1 (01:27:52):
It's the jewel Chilely. They played for USC and Notre Dame.
Speaker 4 (01:27:57):
Do you think this comes from not making the playoffs?
Speaker 1 (01:28:00):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
Well, they need to keep USC because USC was one
of their top twenty five wins, Notre Dame's and beating
them down. Notre Dame has won seven of the last
eight games. Wow, let's see. Let me try to find
the overall overall, Notre Dame leads fifty one to thirty
seven and five. That's a beatdown.
Speaker 1 (01:28:21):
I like how.
Speaker 2 (01:28:22):
By the way I pulled it up on the Wikipedia page,
there's two footnotes in this. There's footnotes about vacated wins
by USC, and then footnotes about vacated wins from Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (01:28:33):
So both schools.
Speaker 2 (01:28:36):
Look, if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying in the
college football, that's just how it goes. Vacated win from
USC in two thousand and five, two vacated wins from
Notre Dame in twenty twelve and twenty and thirteen.
Speaker 1 (01:28:47):
It's the vacated Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:28:51):
So, I mean, it's a storied rivalry. It's two once
great programs. Then I think are both hampered by kind
of the same thing.
Speaker 1 (01:28:58):
Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (01:29:00):
I mean, USC is a great location in LA well,
not great in town. Actually it's a rough part of town.
I think it was who's the interview I saw recently
where they said they would take some people around USC
and they would take them to everywhere in LA But
actually USC like take them to take them to Beverly Hills,
take them to the Hollywood Hills, and then not take
(01:29:20):
them on campus when they would take them on visits
to USC. But it's not a nice take. But it's
a private school with very difficult entrance requirements. Same thing
for Notre Dame. And I mean, and then I don't
think it's an accident. USC has it factored into and
to the national championship in a long time, even though
Lincoln Riley's a good coach and they've been getting some
good players and had some good quarterbacks. Of course, we
(01:29:43):
know the struggles that Notre Dame has had, all right,
anything else on the news last thing at.
Speaker 4 (01:29:47):
Noon Picksborg Steelers wide receiver DK metcalf. I don't know
if you guys saw was an altercation with a fan
at Yes during the second quarter of the Steelers versus
Allion's game last night. Basically almost kind of pips and
there's no uh. The NFL is reviewing the incident for
potential discipline, but I mean, what are you think.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
Probably gonna be a one game suspension. My opinion is
the dude was leaned over the thing like he was
leaned over talking to Dk, and he probably wasn't asking
him about his Christmas plans. So I mean, if you're
a Lions fan, honestly my opinion, and we'll talk about
this more in the next segment, the fans are doing
too much. You're over there leaning and yelling. This show
isn't about you. You're here to watch the game and
(01:30:30):
cheer on your team. And if you want to scream
in heckle, I think a that's that's a little bit
too much. And if you want to try to single
out a guy and you want all this attention, and
guess what you want to get the attention, You're gonna
get a punch in your face. I want to know
the details because I know you need to know both
sides of the story.
Speaker 1 (01:30:47):
What happened.
Speaker 2 (01:30:48):
Did DK Metcalf just lose his mind or was this
guy saying something. If this guy was saying something he
shouldn't have said, I'm on team DK Metcalf, he's leaned
over the railing while DK maat seven. I mean he's
trying to get in his face. If you want to
start saying the stuff to somebody and you wanna try
to get in their face, I mean, Jonathan, I don't
know about how way, how how you grew up. That's
how you get punched.
Speaker 4 (01:31:10):
I've told you before, I'm a conversation with a person
like that. To me, I'm a mom.
Speaker 1 (01:31:14):
Dude, No, you can't do that to me, you know, yeah, exactly. So,
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:31:17):
We need more details on it before I have a
full opinion. But my initial reaction is you're leaned over
into the playing space, You're liable to get hit, especially
if you're talking trash. All right, quick break here on
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Those you and hold,
we will get to you. Anybody want to get in
seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
a phone number seven one three two one two five
(01:31:39):
seven ninety. You can also send tweets to ad sports RV.
Looks like Matt Thomas wants to join the show. Coming
up at twelve thirty. It is the Matt Thomas Show
without Matt Thomas, but some Matt Thomas. You know, I'm
gonna say, with some Matt Thomas coming up at twelve
thirty here on Sports Talk seven ninety. Coming up in
(01:32:03):
a few minutes here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross,
We'll be joined by Matt Thomas. I guess he is
all set up and ready to go in Beverly Hills.
I think Los Angeles in a very nice part of town.
And they have where they have forty dollars pancakes. Jonathan,
what's the most you ever paid for pancakes?
Speaker 1 (01:32:22):
Oh? Not forty dollars? First?
Speaker 4 (01:32:25):
First?
Speaker 8 (01:32:25):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:32:26):
Worst?
Speaker 4 (01:32:26):
Watch was the breakfast place? I guess I got kind
of expensive pancocks. Oh okay, all right, twenty dollars, babe.
All right, So we'll catch up on the pancake prices
and how that's going. With Matt Thomas coming up in
the next segment. Chris Gordy hung out for the first
couple hours. Appreciate him. You guys can get in if
you'd like.
Speaker 2 (01:32:41):
Seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety seven
one three, two, one two five seven ninety So Texans
get to win, albeit in ugly fashion. How much do
you say, Hey, you know what, it's week to week
in the NFL. They're not all going to be pretty.
We can point to any number of ugly wins for
any other top contending teams. At least you're able to
(01:33:03):
get the victory and win. You're seventh in a row.
I mean they're they're ten and five. They've won seven
in a row. So when you look at the entire forest,
it's been pretty good. Couple of trees aren't so pretty
last week's tree, or I should say, yesterday's two point
victory where if you don't get that pick six from
Derek Stingley, if Gino Smith throws it not even on target,
(01:33:25):
into the dirt or whatever, who knows. If you're able
to win that game. You got out gained by the
Las Vegas Raiders and of course two big plays from
Ashton genty superstar running back, and it could have been
a completely different game. It felt almost like at some
point they might collapse at the end of that game.
It was just trending in that direction. Credit to them,
(01:33:48):
they held on. They got it done. But it was
an ugly win. Here's what CJ. Shroud had to say
about that.
Speaker 13 (01:33:56):
Yeah, you know it was ugly, but you know the
way you want you want to in December is winning,
you know, whatever it looks like, however it looks. So,
you know, I'm proud of gods who finished a strong.
You know, we sought off, you know, kind of bad
in the first quarter and they're from there kind of roll.
But you know it starts with me. You know, I
just missing some throws here and there. But I think,
you know, we can get all these things could be fixed,
you know, and just got to just keep rolling it,
(01:34:17):
you know, keep continue to get better.
Speaker 2 (01:34:19):
All right, hold on, was this from last week or
was this like the last seven weeks in a row.
All these things can be fixed. I gotta be better,
and that's maybe the thing where it's kind of wearing
thin on people who were Houston Texans fans as we
keep hearing the same thing week after week after week
after week. But as it goes with sports teams and
in general, I mean, you're you're always gonna find something
(01:34:40):
to complain about.
Speaker 1 (01:34:41):
That just is how it is.
Speaker 2 (01:34:42):
So the team's not perfect, but they're ten and five.
They're not gonna win the the AFC South because the Jaguars.
I mean, I'm more scared of the Jaguars than I
have been all season long. I mean, that was that
was a statement game, and they've had a big win
against Jets a couple of weeks ago. Daniel Ownes wasn't
there when they beat the Colts before that. Then they
beat the Titans and the Cardinals, like yeah, big win
(01:35:05):
against the Chargers six five, six weeks ago, and then
yesterday against the Denver Broncos in their house, dominating them.
I mean, Trevor Lawrence was running all over them, rushing
for a touchdown, throwing for three more. I think in
a game where they it just it felt like they
controlled that game. So I'm definitely worried about the Jaguars.
(01:35:29):
We'll see what when it comes to the Broncos and
the Patriots and how the playoffs are going to line up,
because the Texans are going to be in the playoffs.
But it's a good team. Can they be great? Can
they make their first AFC championship ever? Yes, they can.
The offense has to play better. They have to clean
(01:35:50):
some things up. CJ. Stroud said it. He's been saying
for weeks. They have to be better. And then we
also have to figure out what's going on with that
offensive line. All right, Seven five, seven ninety is the
phone number if you want to get in. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. It is the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross with you until two o'clock
and we will be joined by the one and only
(01:36:12):
Matt Thomas coming up next year on Sports Talk seven ninety,
So don't go anywhere, twelve thirty three pm here on
Sports Talk seven ninety The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
I think Matt is Matt ready, we have Matthew. Good morning,
Hey Matt, you all right? You said a little sleepy
(01:36:33):
A little bit you okay, a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:36:37):
I just want a long time, no talk.
Speaker 2 (01:36:39):
I want to come on the show. I had not
heard a Wolf Ferrell commercial while so I wanted to hear. Okay,
that's good. Yeah, you know you can pay your own way. Apparently,
I don't know if you knew the pay and pay
and pay.
Speaker 1 (01:36:51):
All right? As a vacation.
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
Vacation was great, went to Lake Charles. Things were very successful.
Speaker 3 (01:36:57):
Love.
Speaker 2 (01:36:57):
I heard you were dry snitch you know, on me
about how the are going in Lake Charles from a listener.
Speaker 10 (01:37:03):
Yeah, dry cinching movie the term you Yeah, okay, Well
that's the last time I ever if you're throwing Hondi's around.
Speaker 2 (01:37:08):
Yeah, that's the last time I ever sent you a
picture from a trip. But that's okay.
Speaker 1 (01:37:11):
No, no, no, no, that's it. You're off. You're off
the early off the list. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:37:16):
You can't be talking on air about all that stuff.
That's nobody's business.
Speaker 1 (01:37:19):
It's exciting.
Speaker 10 (01:37:19):
No, you're trying to get me followed home? All right, people, Louis,
you don't have vehicles, so what are you worried about it?
Speaker 9 (01:37:26):
They do?
Speaker 2 (01:37:27):
They don't have shoes, they have vehicles.
Speaker 10 (01:37:29):
Right, I was called us how much you talked about
A and M's national championship they won yesterday?
Speaker 2 (01:37:35):
Uh? Well, I believe no but at least they want
a conference championship, right, Oh, you're talking about the volleyball.
Volleyball that was they went on some kind of miracle
Cinderella run right.
Speaker 1 (01:37:45):
Good for that. I did, actually did bring it up.
Speaker 10 (01:37:47):
Yeah, not only did they win a national championship, they
were beating I mean, one powerhouse landmark team after they're
there in straight sets. I mean they were just beating
them to a pulp. Yeah, a dominant brack performance.
Speaker 1 (01:38:01):
As everyone says, Texas A and M is certainly a
volleyball school. So yeah, who knocked Texas out? Wisconsin?
Speaker 2 (01:38:08):
I don't Oh, Wisconsin beat them in the semis mm
that's a shame. Yeah, but oh well it was a
five setter over Nebrak. Nebraska was like the death star,
weren't they They didn't lost all year?
Speaker 10 (01:38:19):
Yeah, Nebraska hadn't on their home floor too. That was
even the biggest part of it all.
Speaker 2 (01:38:24):
Oh wow, did you watch the match?
Speaker 1 (01:38:26):
Of course?
Speaker 3 (01:38:27):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:38:27):
Really?
Speaker 1 (01:38:28):
Yeah? Oh, good for you. I watched them on the plane.
Speaker 10 (01:38:31):
I've watched I watched a lot of football yesterday and
I was listening to you in the iheartradiop which everybody
should do when they travel and We'll talk more about
this tomorrow when I'm with you for the full four.
The Chargers are really good. The Jaguars, and I can't
put I feel like I need to vomit. The Jaguars
are really good. You went to Denver and beat them
(01:38:52):
and it wasn't even really that close.
Speaker 2 (01:38:54):
Yeah, I'm a little bit worried. I'm more worried about
the Jaguars and the Chargers than I was even a
few weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (01:39:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:39:00):
The only thing that saving grace you have is that
neither one of those teams has any prolonged playoffs success.
Denver was one and out and Jacksonville just doesn't ever
go to the playoffs. But Trevor Lawrence, I was watching
at least on the red zone app and I mean
throwing darts Bay and there. I mean that was a
team that the Texans only scored fifteen points out at home.
(01:39:22):
Jacksonville went to Denver eighty thousand crazy people, and I
mean they were just moving the ball around like they
were the Joe Montana Jerry Rice lad Niners offense.
Speaker 2 (01:39:32):
Yeah, it's concerning. It's a concerned as I've been by
the Jaguars. We kind of thought the last couple of weeks,
maybe you were going to be able to come up
and win the AFC SUT but now it's yeah, they
have what is it, the Colts and then the Titans
the last two games.
Speaker 10 (01:39:45):
That's done. Yeah, it's so yeah. I mean the seventh seed.
The problem is going to be which who's going to
be in that number two spot. I mean it could
be Jacksonville, it could be New and by the way,
New England. Do you watch the Sunday Night game last night?
I mean, my god, Drake May was throwing BB's all
over the place.
Speaker 2 (01:40:01):
Drake May, I think it was his first three hundred
yard passing game of his career and he had.
Speaker 1 (01:40:05):
Three eighty and it could not have come in any
better time. Says the Houston Toros.
Speaker 2 (01:40:10):
Oh really yeah, okay, yeah, the Toros are gonna win
the championship. I don't know, the fourth seed upset the
one seed in our No, you got the best roster.
You're gonna win the championship. I'm probably you know what, congratulations,
I'm already giving you the crown. The Houston Toros are
twenty twenty five. I heeart Houston League champions I'll take
I'll probably a belt when I earn it. No, you've
(01:40:31):
already a champ, and you know what this is. This
is a great result for a great team and a
great commissioner in this league or former.
Speaker 1 (01:40:38):
I should say. Yeah, I was gonna say I'm a GM. Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:40:43):
Well, thankfully we've been on the air, what five minutes
of you You've not brought up the game in Sacramento
last nights.
Speaker 1 (01:40:48):
For that, I thank you. You know what I did, dude?
You were you listening when I was giving you your
proper respects?
Speaker 3 (01:40:53):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:40:53):
I did what you say.
Speaker 2 (01:40:54):
Oh, we played the game winning shot from Dennis Shrewder
and you didn't call it like someone got your dog,
which I know you probably wanted to.
Speaker 10 (01:41:02):
Oh god, yes you did it. I thought the Rosen
was gonna go for the layup and then he throws this.
He goes to the lane. I thought, okay, because the
Rosen's the king of the mid range. I mean, he
he doesn't like shooting threes. He penetrates the lane. He
had about with five or six top of the key
jumpers last time. I mean, he likes everything about eighteen
feet in And I thought he's gonna go for the
layup whatever.
Speaker 1 (01:41:20):
And then he kicks out the Dennis Shrewder, who I
do not.
Speaker 2 (01:41:23):
Like Rockets legend, Dennis Shrewder, the Dennis Shrewder revenge game.
Speaker 10 (01:41:29):
I'm gonna ask you this question because you and I
organically not even talked about this and will spend more
time about this tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:41:35):
What happened.
Speaker 10 (01:41:36):
I don't even know what happened. I mean, it wasn't
like there was a large amount of mishots. It was
I thought it felt like to me, Sacramento just didn't
miss in the lot because they were Wacketts through one
hundred and eighty six, well except ten minutes left to go.
I don't think the King's missed a shot in the
last quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:41:51):
Oh yeah, I think it was just Kings shot making
is the way that I would go with, and not
only it was just a bunch of bad defense. I mean,
we've kind of talked about this mat like even the
bad teams in the NBA have good players, Like the
Kings are terrible, but I mean Russell Westbrook couldn't miss
from three, not couldn't miss, but he made five threes.
(01:42:12):
Keegan Murray's a good young player. DeMar DeRozan, we we
know what he is it's a Dennis Shrewder is an
NBA vet. Even the horrible teams in the NBA have
like four or five dangerous players. I know I'll get
pushed back from some but this is like the most
talented the NBA has been ever where even the bad
teams have really good players.
Speaker 10 (01:42:31):
Well, I mean case in point, the Rockets have lost
to a five win team and a six wing team
in one week, right.
Speaker 2 (01:42:39):
Yeah, Sandwich in between. That's a nice win against the Nuggets.
But losing to the Pelicans and losing to the Kings,
it hurts.
Speaker 10 (01:42:45):
Yeah, so yeah, I was very Look, the New Orleans
game was really hurtful, but I felt like maybe that
was a one off. The Kings was only scored ninety
three points the ninth four we got to the we
got to Sacramento as they were finishing up their game
with Portland. I was like, wait a minute, ninety eight
ninety three what was this a nineteen ninety nine game
with beating played or something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:43:07):
And now you're sixth in the West. Yeah, okay, that's fine.
How we feed Denver in Denver? That was nice, Yeah,
but you're six in the West. The Spurs of one
six in a row. Denver's really good. We'll see what
the Lakers your. I think two and a half point
favorites in that game coming up on Christmas. H schmis
sch Morty was calling it a must win game, almost
(01:43:27):
a must win game against the Clippers.
Speaker 10 (01:43:29):
I don't know how you feel about that. You've bit
to subots. It's gonna be out, so you know what, Hey,
finally Opron.
Speaker 2 (01:43:35):
Look, I love Alprin Shingoun, but when he goes up
against guys who were in his weight class, like the
thin wiry guys like Wimby and go Bear and right
whoever like Evan Mobley, he can he can move those guys.
But when someone's in his weight class, he struggles. And
if he's zubats Is in his weight class.
Speaker 1 (01:43:51):
Well there won't be an issue.
Speaker 10 (01:43:52):
And it sounds like uh Luca had a thigh contusions
on all about Thursday's game. So okay, here's here's the
thing is that you know, I don't know and again
not that he may and I break bright after games.
We just got on the plane and trying to get
you know, he's probably breaking something after that game. I
don't know if it was Britt. I've never been around
a coach in my entire life, with all the college
and pro basketball that I've called that b lions for
(01:44:14):
the middle of the court to call out players after timeouts.
Speaker 1 (01:44:17):
I mean it's like usually coaches.
Speaker 2 (01:44:20):
It's usually in college. It's usually like, uh yeah, some
college coach screaming after people.
Speaker 10 (01:44:27):
But it's not and it's not falling on deaf fears.
It's not like the guys are like, stop calling us out.
I mean they they you know, if he may Dook
is coaching, he gonna come after you if he needs to.
But it's it just was a games the Kings just
couldn't miss in the fourth quarter, and then Jabbari gets
fouled in three point shot, Like first one goes in good,
second one goes in good, and I'm like, please police me,
don't get me drama, and then he misses the third one.
Speaker 2 (01:44:49):
So yeah, well at least he hadn't thrown a chair
choked anyone out. Are you a little uh sick or anything.
Speaker 1 (01:44:56):
That you are? You just tired?
Speaker 2 (01:44:57):
You gotta tell quiet storm, Jonathan play this song Joonvian
here if you give us a little quiet storm.
Speaker 1 (01:45:03):
Now, man, hey, do you like this new microphone? Amazing
by the way, Yeah, is that what it is? Yeah,
it sounds like it is like studio quality. We tried, Yeah,
we tried it last week while you were gone.
Speaker 10 (01:45:12):
And I'm like, you know what, because I usually wear
a headset, and I know I've been listening to some
of our podcasts.
Speaker 1 (01:45:17):
I don't love some of the pops I hear about it,
but this one is the quiet store.
Speaker 14 (01:45:23):
Speaking of that age town, there's rain coming to California.
Oh yeah, and we're awesome not lying me about this.
They're expecting seven inches the ring between now and Fridays.
Speaker 1 (01:45:39):
They're expecting seven inches in La of rain. People are
flipping the f out here in southern California.
Speaker 3 (01:45:52):
Wow.
Speaker 10 (01:45:53):
Now, granted, I didn't go to bed at four o'clock
or three point thirty Pacific time, which is five thirty
Houston time, So I'm gonna I'm gonna take a nap
here shortly, but okay, I get some Yeah, but yeah,
this new microphone music I'm very happy with. I've listened
to the show and even a friend of the show
and Ramona robolist since oh really, studio and I'm like, Raman,
(01:46:14):
you ever had a good microphone when you're on the
rod because you know Michael travels part at two and
he's trying to find better Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:46:19):
So do you prefer the sure sm seven? You know what,
I've got a sure smight Oh wow?
Speaker 10 (01:46:29):
Yeah, oh wow. Do you write that off or what? No,
this is a gift from David Obert, one of our engineers.
Speaker 1 (01:46:34):
Oh okay, oh SM fifty eight. Yeah, and those are fine?
You do think should get a better one?
Speaker 3 (01:46:40):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:46:41):
That sounds good.
Speaker 10 (01:46:42):
Okay, all right, so tomorrow you and I will work
four hours and then we'll do four more hours on Wednesday,
and we're gonna play Christmas music.
Speaker 1 (01:46:49):
On the twenty fourth, the one. Who oh, we're.
Speaker 2 (01:46:51):
Supposed to be playing Christmas music today. Somebody's been dropping
the ball and then I don't want to name any names.
Speaker 4 (01:46:55):
But you said you were gonna get your pigs.
Speaker 1 (01:46:57):
Oh you're right.
Speaker 9 (01:46:58):
It was me.
Speaker 1 (01:46:58):
See, it was me dropping the ball. And I listened
to tell the truth. Yeah, yeah, that was an easy one.
This was it, GORDI got. It's hard to come up before,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:47:08):
Mm hmm yeah you say that now, Yes, you're it's
easy to say that from your couch.
Speaker 1 (01:47:13):
I listened.
Speaker 10 (01:47:14):
Don't worry I listened. Okay, so, well, a good time tomorrow.
We've got a lot of catching up to do. But
I just want to say good morning. I hope you
had a nice trip. How was the big movie theater
thing in Dallas?
Speaker 2 (01:47:25):
Oh it was great. Seventy millimeters. I'm ax, Matt doesn't
get any better. How much was it to get in
for them to watch? Which was twenty five? Okay, yeah, normal,
i'm ax. Here at the megal Minima Marmee is like
thirty dollars, so it was only twenty five up there.
Speaker 1 (01:47:42):
So what movie did you see?
Speaker 2 (01:47:43):
I saw one battle after another, the Paul Thomas Anderson
and Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle and then Sinners they were both
re releasing in Seventy Milimeters was a limited one week
release and it also had the Christopher Nolan Odyssey prologue.
Speaker 10 (01:47:56):
All right, I'm going to leave you this as a
talking point for the part of your show, just one
one little segment. You know, NBC and Pete Cock are
always trying to do different things to add their game presentation.
They announced for a game in mid January, there's gonna
be a special guest analyst for the second half of
the Clippers Warriors game.
Speaker 2 (01:48:15):
Michael Jordan Snoop Dogg. Oh sounds quite the drop off.
Speaker 1 (01:48:22):
For Michael Jordan's Snoop Probably so.
Speaker 2 (01:48:24):
So Jordan did Snoop did a really good job. He
watched hot it was a hockey or something like that. Yeah,
and they started fighting. He was like, get it cuz
it was pretty. It was entertaining.
Speaker 1 (01:48:33):
So he's going to apparently go to shoot around watch film.
Oh really? Oh yeah, they're gonna They're gonna milk this
for all its words? Is there is there a call
that Snoop Dogg won't take.
Speaker 2 (01:48:44):
Everything?
Speaker 10 (01:48:45):
It's like Kevin Hart saying no to a movie exact
or Nick Cage. Yeah, that's true. All right, boys, have
a great rest of your show. I'll be listening on
the iHeartRadio app because that's what we do when we
miss our Houston sports.
Speaker 2 (01:48:57):
Looking forward to putting you to sleep mat on the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 10 (01:49:00):
That's the next show, not this one. Okay, thanks, talk
to you boys, all right, bye, there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:49:05):
Matt Thomas on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross with
that nice new microphone. Sounds good. All Right, We're gonna
take a quick break. We've got a lot of stuff
to get too. Still, we've been talking about the Houston Texans.
How are you feeling about them after yesterday's win? I
mean it's seven straight wins, they're ten and five. When
you look at the forest, it's pretty damn good. Well,
what about that tree yesterday? Seven one three two one
(01:49:27):
two five seven ninty the phone number if you want
to get in seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. How are we feeling about the Rockets now
seventeen and nine, down to the sixth spot in the
Western Conference. Something we have to talk about is is
it a little too early just to talk about possibly
wanting a move for Giannis Attintacoumpo or is that a
panic move? We can talk about that anything. You guys
(01:49:49):
want to get to college football playoff action over the weekend.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Is
your phone number? Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:50:03):
All right?
Speaker 3 (01:50:04):
So the.
Speaker 2 (01:50:07):
He said, he said, has already begun and the DK
metcalf dust up. If you have not seen it, Uh,
you saw it, correct, mister Allen. Yes, he was all
over the place. And my first reaction was, what did
the fans say? My first reaction wasn't was, Oh, DK Metfancalf,
(01:50:28):
you must conduct yourself in a much better man or
why would you do this? You were supposed to be
a professional. My first reaction was what did that dude
say to get him so angry? Cause, I mean, DK Metcalf,
as far as I know, hasn't had any run ins
with any fans or gone in the stands or causing
a bunch of trouble or anything like that. But people
were it was funny. People were saying, Oh, he's taking
(01:50:50):
up the George Pickens role, Like if George Pickens did it,
it would make a lot more sense. But I was like,
what happened to DK Metcalf in this scenario to get
him angry? And well, now, apparently the Detroit Free Press
interviewed the man who said all that he did was
(01:51:11):
call DK Metcalf by his full name, And if you're
not familiar, DK Metcalf's full name is de Kaylin Zakarius Metcalf,
also known as DK Metcalf. So the fan says that
all he did was call him by his full name.
(01:51:32):
I'm not gonna say it because I'm gonna mess it up.
And then that Metcalf pulled him by his shirt and
then punched him. I'm calling BS on that.
Speaker 1 (01:51:43):
I don't. I don't, I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:51:45):
I just feel like no, I just don't feel like
that's gonna I mean, we'll hear DK metcalf story of
Mike Tomlin saying after the game he heard about it,
but he didn't see it. And then the fan just
says he I called him by his full name, and
then he and then he pulled me by my shirt
apparently ripped his shirt. And then he punched him. Because
(01:52:06):
if he pulled him by his shirt because the video
I saw he he had his fist up, but he
wasn't holding the guy's shirt right, and then he punches.
He punches upward. The dude is leaning over the railing
like that's like, uh, I don't like if you don't
don't lean over the railing of like a boxing match,
(01:52:28):
or if you don't want to get hurt.
Speaker 1 (01:52:31):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:52:32):
This disc doesn't seem like it's a name. He did
grab the shirt I'm looking at right here. Okay, so
he did grab him by the shirt. But the guy
doesn't pull back, he doesn't run away or anything. He
looks like he's it looks like he's taunting him. And
then when he gets punched, he puts his two fists
up in the air in celebration, like that's what he
was going for, that's what he wanted to do.
Speaker 1 (01:52:53):
He doesn't sound horrified, he doesn't sound like.
Speaker 2 (01:52:55):
Oh, this is I just called him by his name
and I was just trying to say hello to him,
and oh, I wanted him to sign my shirt and
then he punched me. I don't know about that.
Speaker 1 (01:53:05):
Oh before I forget.
Speaker 4 (01:53:06):
By the way, we had a color from New Zealand
that wanted to really know about your opinion about Will
Muschamp with the hiring at Texas.
Speaker 2 (01:53:14):
Oh, Will muss Champ, it was surprising. I thought Pete
Kwatowski was a good defensive coordinator. I thought they'd done
a good job. I mean, Will Musschamp has I mean
a long standing pedigree. We mentioned this on to tell
the truth, I am concerned about players tuning out Will
Muschamp because his style is to at least younger in
(01:53:36):
his Career's just crazy that he's only fifty four years old.
Feels like he's been around forever, but early in his
career when he was at Texas and then they made
him the coach in waiting under Mac Brown. And then
he stopped waiting because Florida came along, and that's fine.
I mean, Florida's is an excellent job. Then he washed
out there, washed out of South Carolina. Since then, he's
been back at Georgia and he was co defensive coordinator
(01:54:01):
and then got downgraded to defensive analysts. So I am
a little worried about it long term. I mean, he
knows defense, he can coach defense. But I found it
a curious move. I'll just put it that way.
Speaker 1 (01:54:13):
Can it work out? Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:54:15):
If you get Will must Champ a bunch of good
players all over the field, then he's gonna be fine.
And I think, and I kind of keep talking about
this with college coaches, if they're to some level of effectiveness,
get them good players and they're gonna be good. Jimmy's
and Joe's over x'es and o's. At the end of
(01:54:35):
the day, if you put me a defensive coordinator, we're
gonna have some issues. I'm not a defensive coach. I
haven't been around football for forty years. But if you
put Will must Champion there, who as I said, has
been helpful or been a defensive analyst at Georgia and
was co DC, and of course has been a defensive
coordinator under under Nick Saban and Lsu. Of course under
(01:54:57):
Mac Brown in Texas. Be fine should be being the
key word.
Speaker 1 (01:55:05):
But we'll see.
Speaker 2 (01:55:06):
Curious higher. I'm not over the moon about it. I
remember being super stoked, actually funny enough, when he was
first hired in two thousand and seven or eight, or
whenever it was, when he first came to be the
Texas defensive coordinator. I was over the moon, super excited
to have him. It was like a major coup. And
(01:55:27):
then they were good in two thousand and eight, but
then lost to Texas Tech, and then didn't make the
National championship game, and then lost the championship game the
next year against Alabama because col mccoik got his arm
ripped off by Marcel Darius. So we'll see. It's basically
my attitude. Somebody who knows a little bit more than
me can tell me if this is something to be
(01:55:47):
super excited about. I'm more curious than anything, especially because
I thought Pete Watowski was a good defensive coordinator for
the Texas Longhorns. The last couple of years they had
really good defenses. They did they did out late in games,
but that's because the offense is going three and out
every time. I mean, I didn't feel like that was
a defensive issue or defensive coaching issue.
Speaker 1 (01:56:08):
I should say, all.
Speaker 2 (01:56:09):
Right, seven one three two one two five seveninety is
the phone number you want to get in seven one
three two one two five seven one. You can get
in from New Zealand or wherever you want to call.
We got Beverly on hold. We'll get to her anything
you guys want to get to. We've been talking about
the Texans. We've been talking some Rockets, We've been talking
some college football. It is a big sports Monday here
on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross with you until
(01:56:30):
two o'clock hour.
Speaker 1 (01:56:31):
Number four starts. Next is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
What a jam I think?
Speaker 4 (01:56:53):
I when it came out on Medicine?
Speaker 2 (01:56:55):
Yeah, club, Yes, going to the club. You're wearing your
sequence shirt or your silk shirt. You got the tight
bell bottoms on, got the long hair, or you only
got to do about two buttons. You know, it saves
time when you only got to do like two buttons.
Speaker 1 (01:57:09):
Or your shirt.
Speaker 2 (01:57:11):
Keep keep the chest hanging out, looking good, making moves.
Speaker 1 (01:57:19):
MM.
Speaker 2 (01:57:20):
It was a different time, my friend. It was a
different time, all right. The Texans survive against the Oakland
excuse me, oh, boh, buzz me the loss of Vegas.
I was calling them Oakland Raiders yesterday too. My goodness,
I can't get this out of my head. The loss
Vegas Raiders twenty three to twenty one. You got the late,
big first down from Nico Collins.
Speaker 1 (01:57:43):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:57:43):
Stroud was okay, thirty five attempts for one hundred and
eighty seven yards not ideal, but one touchdown, no picks,
couple of misthrows, but didn't turn the ball over, didn't
cost them the game. That's what you should do with
this defense, even though they got out gained in this game,
especially with Ashton genty with his two big plays. He
had the fifty one yard run for a touchdown that
(01:58:04):
you heard there, the sixty yard catch for a touchdown
you heard as well. And the Texans hold on and
they survive and they win their seventh straight. I mean,
you add the balance of it. You're ten and five.
All five of your losses were by one score. Any
win counts in the NFL, even if the Las Vegas
(01:58:24):
Raiders aren't a very good team and they got beat
thirty one to zero against the Eagles the week before.
You're feeling good and now you got a real big
one coming up Saturday three thirty on NFL Network against
the Los Angeles Chargers, as the Texans will be taking
them on in La as one and a half point dogs.
(01:58:45):
Ross v Real with you here on the Matt Tom Show,
with Ross's phone lines open at seven to one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety if you would like to
get in. So what do you think, ugly win? They
all can out or are we still worried about this offense?
You got forty points a week ago against the Cardinals,
(01:59:06):
but before that twenty twenty twenty three sixteen against a
bad Titans team, and then before that there was a
thirty six point explosion. But there was a pick six
at the end of that game, I believe, or a
fumble six maybe it was, so, I don't know. Feels
like the AFC is wide open. There's a lot of parody. Patriots.
(01:59:30):
Don't scare me. A ton Broncos don't scare me a ton.
Jaguars are starting to scare me a little bit, oddly enough.
They've won six in a row, and they looked really
good beating down the Broncos in their houses past weekend.
But the Texans are right there in that mix. You
want to say you're scared of the Bills, they beat
the Bills. And while the Colts, of course are going
to be a non factor. Same thing for the Chiefs now,
who are six and nine, have lost four in a row.
(01:59:51):
You know what, By the way, quick kudos to Jonathan
you called this week's ago. I know Pat Mahomes went
down and tore his ACL, but I mean eve and
when even if he didn't tear his ACL, they were
not going to make the playoffs because they were losing
that game when he did tear it against the What
was it the ego of the Chargers a couple of
weeks ago, whatever it was, So yeah, Pat Mahomes not
(02:00:14):
good enough. Chiefs not good enough. They're going to completely
miss the playoffs. It's hard man, Andy Reid and Pat
Mahomes and Travis Kelsey's fell farewell tour. You're not even
gonna make the playoffs. You got to come to Kelly Chiefs. Yeah,
you're right, you were right, you were correct. I love
that you were vindictive about it, to tell the truth opinion,
(02:00:34):
because that's you know, what you're learning from me, and
that's actually probably not a good thing, gentlemen. But you're
holding a grudge from to tell the truth opinions, and
you're keeping it going. I appreciate that from me. Okay, good,
well it's every week for me. But but I digress.
All right, seven one three seven Iety is the phone
number you want to get in a couple on holds.
So let's go ahead and get after Dave on the
north side, holding alongest.
Speaker 1 (02:00:54):
What's up, Dave ah Ros Ross Ross Ross, Dave, Dave,
I love you.
Speaker 3 (02:01:02):
Yes, sir, yes, sir.
Speaker 12 (02:01:04):
Uh, Gloria Gainer, I will survive, perfect, perfect. And so
for the Texans here, uh, the Texans, Uh, there's nothing
nothing wrong with the Texans the step except people are
getting like too anti just two squeaming show up. They're
just scared that the Texans, you know, uh are going
(02:01:27):
to losing the playoffs. I mean, uh, all the Texans
fans just to just relax, just relax and just enjoy
the riding and the scared. The only scariest thing about
the Houston Texans is that if they turn over the
(02:01:47):
football on offense. If they don't turn over the football offense,
they're They're okay. The only scariest team that I'm afraid
of is Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (02:01:58):
But but here's my bolt prediction.
Speaker 12 (02:02:02):
My Bolt prediction is Jacksonville and Houston in the AFC
Championship game. That's my bold prediction. I'm not gonna pick
a winner, but if Jacksonville gets to the AFT Championship game,
you'll be Houston and Jacksonville to play for the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (02:02:19):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:02:20):
All right, Dave, Thanks lot. I appreciate you getting in.
It feels that I have to temper this because it
feels like every time I sit here and I talk
about a Houston team, or really any sports team, and
I say, you know, I could see them making a
deep run, or I could see them out in the
first round.
Speaker 1 (02:02:40):
You know what that generally means.
Speaker 2 (02:02:42):
That generally means you have a team that is not dominant,
and that means you have a team that will probably
falter and stumble at some point. I mean, that's just
how it goes. And maybe we could argue that it's
a little bit different because it's the NFL and it's
weak week no matter what. But don't you feel like
(02:03:02):
normally when you're like, oh, I could see them going far,
I could see them losing early. Like, yeah, they'll lose early,
or they lose in the middle. They won't make a
deep run generally on teams, we just say that that
we that we feel that way, and we wait for
the flip, the switch to flip at some point, which
we've been waiting, and we played We played the audio
earlier today of c J Shroud. Yeah, we gotta clean
some things up. I gotta make some better throws. I
(02:03:24):
could have played that from from the last several weeks,
pres even he played from back to preseason. You got
to clean some things up and I gotta make some
better throws. Yeah, when's it gonna happen? When when are
we gonna get the more consistent play that we've been
asking for. I mean, the San Francisco forty nine Ers
game was really good. I'm trying to think of like
(02:03:46):
the really good, clean, great wow game from CJ Shroud. Wait,
I had a good game. Maybe it was a couple
of weeks ago. I'm pulling up his game logs right now. Yeah,
the Arizona game a week ago was good. Nine yards
of two, three touchdowns, no picks.
Speaker 1 (02:04:02):
But I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:04:06):
It just doesn't feel like it's been consistent enough before that.
One touchdown, no touchdowns. Of course, the Denver game he
got hurt. We won't count that. Yeah, the Baltimore game
was great. The San Francisco game was good. He had
three hundred yards, a couple of touchdowns. He did throw
one pick in that game. So we're looking at the
Baltimore game. The Niners game will give him because he
(02:04:28):
went over three hundred yards. By the way, the only
time he's gone over three hundred yards all season long
was in that game and in the Arizona game, which
is a blowoup. Talking about three solid performances. No wow games, No,
oh my god, this is a franchise guy game. Remember
like the Buccaneers game his rookie season, something like that.
(02:04:49):
No crazy, out of control. This guy has no doubt
about it. The franchise quarterback games, of course, it's been
hampered by the running game has been bad all year long.
It was either Nick Chobb or Woody Mark. So now
it's been Jawir Jordan. You just have not had a
good consistent run game. You have not had a good
consistent offensive line, and Ariante Arsery got hurt and Trent
(02:05:13):
Brown got hurt. Hersary apparently has a broken hand, a
broken bone in his hand as the report, which offensive
linemen do normally play through. So we'll see what happens there.
But it is the offense and not consistently putting it
together that makes me almost I want to scold myself
because I don't sound like I'm talking about a team
(02:05:34):
that's won seven straight games. They've been good, they've been great.
They've outperformed all expectations from the zero to three start,
and then they're ten and two since then, and even then,
even still, all their five losses are by one score,
and the losses are to the Rams, super Bowl contender.
Buccaneers were looking good, but Baker Mayfield's been playing hurt.
(02:05:56):
They haven't been good since Jaguars got eleven wins. See,
how are also Super Bowl contenders. You lost to them
on the road, and you lost to the Broncos at
home when Davis Mills had to play half the game,
all by one score. So yeah, add it all up.
This is a really good football team. This is an
AFC contender. Just wish the Jaguars would faulted a little bit.
(02:06:18):
You can get that home game in the first round
and then kind of go from there to where you're
able to avoid with the re seeding, you're able to
likely to avoid going on the road in a tough environment,
especially if you end up as the seventh seed, which
I believe they are right now where it would be
at New England at this moment, you're at New England.
(02:06:40):
I think they're probably the toast of the AFC if
you ask me at the moment, and then you would
be the seventh seed if you win that game at Denver,
that's tough. It'd be a tough road to make, and
then you'd be on the road for whatever other playoff
game you went to because you'd be the seventh seed.
So you'd have to go win three road games to
make a Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (02:07:00):
That'd be tough.
Speaker 2 (02:07:01):
All right, Quick break here on the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross. We're talking from Houston, Texans football. They survive
yesterday against the Las Vegas Raiders. How you feel it?
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three, two one two five, seven ninety We'll take
that break. We're here from Jamaico, Ryans and C J.
Stroud and more and your phone calls anything you guys
(02:07:22):
want to get to at seven one three two one
two five seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (02:07:33):
S three Hi, Yes.
Speaker 3 (02:07:37):
In the.
Speaker 1 (02:07:40):
SNS, listening a beautifuluestion. We're happening to night an Orange Wonderland. Come.
Speaker 2 (02:07:53):
The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin holds up you all.
Welcome back Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas
with you until two o'clock. When Matt is away, the
Christmas music will play traditionally on this show, which now
I've been with him. I'm gonna throw up since two
(02:08:14):
thy ten. We're going into our sixteenth year or is
this the sixteenth year?
Speaker 3 (02:08:20):
Next to this?
Speaker 2 (02:08:22):
Make sure we'll be our seventeenth whatever we're going into. Wow,
I think I can't remember. Matt knows the exact day
they started me. It was like January fourth or something
like that, or somewhere like that. The first day of THO.
We should have an anniversary partner or this is probably
something I should know, but I don't. But anyways, he
he only likes to have Christmas music on Christmas Eve.
(02:08:43):
I would like to play it like basically all December.
I've been listening to it for the last couple of weeks.
I'retha Franklin Winter Wonderland one.
Speaker 1 (02:08:49):
Of my faves. But I digress. Phone lines open if
you want to get in.
Speaker 2 (02:08:54):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number seven one three two five seven ninety.
So we're talking about the Texans in the last segment,
and I mean, really, when you get to like, like
I said, you look at the big picture. The big
picture is they have won ten games. They have won
seven of them in a row. They were three and
five or yeah, two and.
Speaker 1 (02:09:17):
Four, is that right you?
Speaker 2 (02:09:18):
After the Seahawks loss the Seahawks game, some said was
a must win game and if they lose this one,
they're out of the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (02:09:26):
Well they lost it. Jaguar.
Speaker 2 (02:09:28):
I remember the Jaguars game, people saying that was a
must win game. It's a must win game against the
Jaguars in Week three, Well they lost and now they're
ten and five. This is again a reason why I
just don't subscribe to the must win Every game is
a must win game type of theory. You can, well,
you can lose some games, you'll be all right. There's
no must win games left for the Texans. In all
(02:09:50):
likelihood they're gonna be They're gonna get a playoff seed
starting tonight with the Colts in all likelihood losing to
the San Francisco forty nine ers. You want to win
against the Chargers. You want to win against the Colts.
You want to improve your seting. You don't want to
be the seventh seed. That would guarantee you would have
to go on the road for three straight games to
make it to a Super Bowl, which the Texans can
(02:10:14):
and could do. I know, the six seed New York
Giants the second time they beat I think it was
the second time they beat the Patriots in like twenty
twelve or whatever, it was pretty sure they were a
six seed and went on the road the whole way.
But it's rare and it's difficult, and it's not like
the Texans are going to be able to get a
home game anyways. Maybe if they get nestled up into
(02:10:36):
a five seed and some things break their way, who knows.
But you also would have the less difficult path in theory,
depending on the way things shake out. I mean, no
guarantee the Patriots are going to be the two seed,
no guarantee the Broncos are going to be the one seed.
All this could get flip flopped around, and our caller
Shops I didn't confirm this, but our caller Shoops earlier
(02:10:57):
said the Texans could still be the one seed, but
you would need to win out with the Broncos and
Patriots losing out, and now that's not gonna happen. That's
not gonna happen. And the same thing for the Jaguars
only winning one of their last two games, but they're
gonna probably sweep. So I'm gonna say that is not likely.
But get up there, try to win your last two games.
(02:11:23):
Pray somehow, some way the Jaguars could drop a game
on the road against the Colts or at home against
the Titans, and then go from there. Just win the
games in front of you and see how the chips
fall in the AFC, because right now the AFC is
very difficult. There's a lot of good teams. There are
a lot of eleven ten win teams, and you're in
the mix, though, and you can beat any one of them.
(02:11:43):
Your thought of is on par with everyone, because I mean,
you're on the road taking on the Chargers, the eleven
win Chargers team, and you're only one and a half
games back. But you look at the team, still concerns
about the offensive line, especially with the injuries that have
cropped up over the weekend, and still concerns about the
running game, still concerns about CJ.
Speaker 1 (02:12:03):
Stroud.
Speaker 2 (02:12:04):
Kind of where we've been for the last several weeks,
Which is why I understand some people being a little
bit lukeworm on a team that has ten wins and
they're ten and five. To me, I see both arguments.
Hey they're ten and five, they won seven in a row.
Quitch your whining. It's hard to win in the NFL,
no matter what week it is. Yeah, but have you
seen the offense. They don't move the ball a whole lot.
Speaker 1 (02:12:24):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (02:12:24):
Stroud missus throws. They got a practice squad guy leading
the running back room, and you've got some offensive line injuries.
It's problematic. See how it shakes out in the next
couple of weeks. Who keep waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting for
that switch to flip. Generally, that means in my experience.
It's never gonna happen, but you don't even need it
(02:12:46):
to happen to that extent of where you're talking about
a dominant offense. If you're this Texans team to where
they can lose or I'm sorry, they can win with
the defense and just enough offense. All we're asking for
is just enough CJ strout slash, run game, slash offensive line.
Don't blow the game, don't turn the ball over, let
the defense do its work. I think that's the Demico
(02:13:08):
Ryans formula for success. That's the Houston Texans formula for success.
Beverly in friend ones has been holding patiently. What's up, Beverly,
I have a.
Speaker 5 (02:13:18):
Question for.
Speaker 15 (02:13:20):
I know you'd have to use the bump her music.
Why does it continue on and on and on or
either the noise level is so high? Well, like last night,
I was listening to the game after the Rockets game,
I was listening to You with the talk show and
the noise was so loud I could hardly hear you.
Why and who controls that?
Speaker 2 (02:13:43):
That normally would be the producer maybe not fading it
off in time or something like that. And it happened
last night that this is the postgame show.
Speaker 1 (02:13:52):
The Rockets rest game show.
Speaker 15 (02:13:54):
Yes, Rockets.
Speaker 1 (02:13:55):
I don't think there was.
Speaker 2 (02:13:56):
A postgame Rockets wrap calling show because it was a
late start.
Speaker 1 (02:14:00):
Well, maybe it was the pre game. Maybe it was
the pregame.
Speaker 15 (02:14:04):
No, it was after the game when they were talking
about the game, you know.
Speaker 1 (02:14:10):
A call in show. I don't think we.
Speaker 13 (02:14:13):
Okay, maybe it.
Speaker 15 (02:14:14):
Was recorded, but oh I noticed that the noise level
and I don't even call it music. It's clicking and noising.
It's so the producer controls that.
Speaker 2 (02:14:26):
Yeah, normally, unless it was pre recorded, which I'm going
to guess it might have been with Chris Cordy doing
the pregame. Normally, if it's a late night game, I'm
not calling him out.
Speaker 1 (02:14:34):
I do it too.
Speaker 2 (02:14:35):
When it's when it's a pregame and it's very late night,
you just record the pregame and then you wrote and
you roll at it like usually eight o'clock. Was it
around what time? Was it around eight o'clock or was
it around past?
Speaker 15 (02:14:44):
This was late because the game last night was was
didn't start till lates.
Speaker 2 (02:14:51):
Unless I'm mistaken, Beverly, we did not have a postgame
call in show. It might have been was it the
was it the post game where they they were just
running through the highlights and stuff.
Speaker 15 (02:15:01):
But it went on for an hour after the game
because I listened to the game because we lost by
one point.
Speaker 2 (02:15:10):
Yeah, well, I appreciate you, Beverly. I'm not sure we're
kind of going in circles here. I just don't know, because,
like I said, we don't normally games we have a
cutoff here behind the curtains. Some would say we have
a cutoff here that if the game is after nine o'clock,
we don't do a postgame show because generally that means
the game's not ning till eleven thirty, and then the
(02:15:33):
postgame show is probably not even with the highlights with
Adam playting is midnight if it's Adam Wexler, might not
intill twelve thirty or one, and then then the call
in show would start super late. So I'm not sure.
I don't think we had a postgame call in show,
but thank you. If it was the pregame, maybe it

Speaker 1 (02:16:08):

Car as I go along with these years of mine Jonathan,
I have to ask myself, Stevie Wonder the goat this influence, innovation, longevity,
singing voice, songwriting. But he was instrumentation. No, he wasn't
(02:17:33):
the first to do with Charles two Ray. Charles is
honestly on the short list, checking all the boxes. Incredible
singing voice, incredible influence.
Speaker 1 (02:17:44):
H I'm just saying he's on the shortlist. Put him
on the shortlist.
Speaker 2 (02:17:48):
Stevie Wonder, one of the all time great with some
silver bells here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number if you want to get in. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. Former Texans
legend Denzel Perriman suspended for two games after a dirty
(02:18:10):
hit he was flagged for yesterday in the Cowboys game.
I was trying to find the exact exact language. I
just had the tweet, but I lost it. Yes, according
to the NFL, it is quote repeated violations of playing
rules intended to protect the health and safety of the players,
(02:18:32):
including during Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. So I
mean that big news for the Texans coming up this weekend.
Texans legend Denzel Perryman, who was kind of what Alziz
al Shaier is that that enforcer sideline to sideline middle
linebacker for the Chargers and not going to play. Suspended
(02:18:53):
for two games, yeah, second quarter, he was penalized for
unnecessary roughness for a give a blow to the head
of receiver Ryan floor Noy. I mean it was kind
of all these plays and like slow motion, they look
dirtier than they are, Like it's it's very difficult to
have these guys slow down and stuff like that. But
it was a dirty hit by Denzel Perriman. Now he's
(02:19:13):
been suspended for two games. Who knows what's gonna happen
as far as an appeal or if that's going to
go down one game or or what, but something to
keep an eye on. I'm gonna guess he's not going
to be available this Saturday against the Houston Texans. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety is a
phone number you want to get in seven one three
two one two five seven ninety Morgan on the sunny side,
(02:19:34):
next up? What's up? Morgan?
Speaker 7 (02:19:37):
Hey Ross, Hey Man, I didn't know you guys, so
you went back to other that long man, it's a
long time.
Speaker 1 (02:19:43):
Yeah, well I was there.
Speaker 2 (02:19:44):
I started off as the producer and then I've been
full time in the booth uh as a co host
since two thousand now March of twenty nineteen. So we're
coming up on it'll be seven years of that.
Speaker 5 (02:19:54):
Oh god, oh steal man, that's awesome.
Speaker 3 (02:19:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:20:00):
And then the other thing is when you're got this
de assiable.
Speaker 9 (02:20:04):
Bails that reminded me man of a shirt that Q
liquor what happened to surely Q lickor Man, I do
not know.
Speaker 2 (02:20:12):
That was a person that did bits on the Michael
Berry Show, right, Oh my bad. Yeah, we didn't have sir,
wasn't us So I'm not I'm not sure about that.
That's that's not a question I can answer.
Speaker 3 (02:20:24):
No, no, okay, No, that's my bad.
Speaker 1 (02:20:27):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (02:20:28):
But anyway, talk about compare these Texans to the Texans
that the QBA.
Speaker 3 (02:20:35):
Shop area Fallster era and I hang up and listen.
Speaker 2 (02:20:39):
Oh wow, okay, I'll go straight into it. Then those
teams had dominant defenses and better. I would say this
just off the top of my head. I can pull
up like the rankings and stuff like that. I would
say those offenses were better and those defenses were good,
(02:21:00):
but this defense is more elite. Like I'm just gonna
get like this, this defense is number one, number one, right,
I'm gonna guess those were about top ten to top
five ish defenses with maybe a top ten offense. This
is a top one defense. They're still number one in yards,
still number one in points, which no football team in
(02:21:21):
the history of professional football in Houston has ever done
both in a single season.
Speaker 1 (02:21:27):
And this offense is just like.
Speaker 2 (02:21:30):
Fair to Midland, fifteen to twenty ish. Oh yeah, the
nineteenth in points, nineteenth in yards, so not fifteenth to twentieth,
just more twenty ish. Yeah, I'm just looking at these
Kubiak the twenty twelve Yeah, they were top ten in
both in twenty twelve. That was their best season ever.
(02:21:51):
They the only twelve win season in the history of
the franchise. They were twelve and four. Their offense was
eighth and seventh in points in yards, and their defense
was ninth and seventh in points in yards, So to
top ten. A top ten offense and a top ten defense,
but this is a top one defense and then not
(02:22:11):
so a more balanced team back then, and this is
more carried by the defense all time elite. As far
as finishing number one in anything in Texans history, as
I have it pulled up, they finished first in yards
in twenty sixteen, and that's the only time they finished
first in anything. Also thirty yards and fifteen second in
(02:22:36):
yards in eleven. Never finished first in points, and a
couple of weeks to go still, but we'll see against
the Chargers, they could give up some points. Probably whoever's
quarterbacking the Colts at the time they play them probably
not going to be too much of a problem holding
them down points wise, Can you score some points? That'd
(02:22:59):
be nice if this team could get into like the
top fifteen ten to fifteen ish in points and yards. Now,
it was only two weeks left, so it's probably not
gonna happen. Yeah, you could argue for the best Texans
team of all time right now. I guess I would
still stick with that twelve and four team, even though
they faltered down the stretch. They lost like three of
the last games, and then they lost in the division round.
(02:23:19):
I think they got crushed. Did they get crushed by
the Patriots or something like that, or was that? Yeah,
I'm pulling this up yeah, but they beat the Bengals
in the wild card round and then they lost to
the Patriots forty one to twenty eight. I don't think
(02:23:40):
it was even that close. I think it was like
a straight up boat racing. Yeah, they got down thirty
eight to twenty in that game and then scored a
couple of late touchdowns to make it forty one to
twenty eight look better than it was. That's the best
team in Texans history, and this one's vying for that.
If they gets something going on offense, they would be
(02:24:02):
the best team in Texans history.
Speaker 1 (02:24:05):
But so far not to be all right.
Speaker 2 (02:24:11):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
a phone number if you want to get in. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety final segment
of The Man Thomas Show with Ross is coming up
next with what I call the definitive number one all
time Christmas song.
Speaker 1 (02:24:28):
That is next here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 12 (02:24:31):
Chess lots roasting on an open file, Jack Fross nipping
at your nose, You toide cows being sung by who.
Speaker 1 (02:24:51):
And folks dressed up like guess schemo agree, lets this
holding play? I don't think.
Speaker 2 (02:25:03):
That's Sonny my mind and Dan and Tys is gonna
come beat the door down. Hey you're still in our
bed all right?
Speaker 12 (02:25:10):
Sorry?
Speaker 2 (02:25:13):
Oh the to me the number one quintessential. I'm not
saying it's my favorite Christmas song. It might be, actually,
but like the Christmas song of all Christmas songs, gotta
be the Christmas song. Bye, Nat King Cole. Welcome back
to the final segment of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Ross view real with you for just a couple of
(02:25:35):
more minutes before handing it off to Adam Clanton and
Adam Wexler. I believe they're both in. I'm just gonna
assume or I think one of them. And now it's
it's that time of year. Matt's out today. I will
be out for I was out all last week and
I'm gonna be out for two days next week.
Speaker 1 (02:25:56):
That'd be nice. It's gonna be real nice. And then
I'm gonna be I think on in the back.
Speaker 3 (02:26:01):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:26:01):
He went the ground running January. I'm not gonna have
any time off at least maybe until February March.
Speaker 1 (02:26:06):
We'll see.
Speaker 2 (02:26:07):
I'm gonna I gotta dose my time off a little
bit better next year. This year, I didn't take a
vacation until like the middle of August. Yeah, I was like, yeah,
so Johnath is like Ross never works here.
Speaker 1 (02:26:17):
I never see you.
Speaker 2 (02:26:20):
So I'll try to do you know, I should do
like one week a quarter.
Speaker 1 (02:26:22):
That's what I'm gonna do.
Speaker 2 (02:26:23):
And the goal is to hit at least two new
national parks next year. That's what I'm gonna try to
do as well. Great Basin and probably Yosemite, I think
is what I'm gonna go for. Any who, So you
have Matt out today. He will be back tomorrow. In
Los Angeles. Rockets are playing the Clippers tomorrow on Tuesday
and then Thursday it is a tilt with the Los
(02:26:44):
Angeles Lakers on ABC slash, ESPN National nationally televised game
against the Lakers. So that should be a good one,
and yeah, Matt will be back tomorrow. Rockets unfortunately disappointing
right now.
Speaker 4 (02:26:58):
Not what's gonna happen if they say they keep losing
like this and it's they're seventeen, they they don't win
from now they're seventeen, and.
Speaker 2 (02:27:10):
You said lose there in their next two games, like
they lose like.
Speaker 4 (02:27:12):
Four in a row, Like say that seventeen thirteen. Did't
you gut feeling they were going to go undefeated.
Speaker 1 (02:27:16):
On this road trip?
Speaker 16 (02:27:17):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:27:17):
No, no, no, that was mad. I think it was mad.
Speaker 2 (02:27:20):
Okay, good, How are the gut feelings last week?
Speaker 3 (02:27:24):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (02:27:24):
Were you able to get into that document?
Speaker 1 (02:27:26):
I was?
Speaker 3 (02:27:26):
I was?
Speaker 1 (02:27:27):
I was, okay, go aheadte it down? Okay, good? All right?
Speaker 2 (02:27:30):
Anyways, Uh, you know what I guess and now I'm curious.
We can check him tomorrow on the show. He said, uh, yeah,
we can go real quick, A and m beats Miami.
This is Matt wrong.
Speaker 4 (02:27:39):
Oregon over James Madison of course read Alabama over uh
and almost over to Lane direct fifteen plus Repelicans over Repelicans.
Speaker 1 (02:27:52):
They lost.
Speaker 4 (02:27:53):
They lost that. I was just put Buffalo down. I
don't know what he put in Buffalo. I think he
said but.
Speaker 2 (02:28:00):
Around probably Buffalo would win or something. He's a Buffalo lover.
He's a Buffalo Bill's lover. And of course Aggie Matt
all right, so you got the game tomorrow. That, by
the way, game is on NBC Slash Peacock for the
Rockets tomorrow against the Clippers, and then ESPN man a
lot of national exposure games. So it's good to have
them back, but they have lost three of their last four.
(02:28:23):
Look okay, one against Denver and overtime that happens, but
then two overtime games against New Orleans Pelicans and the
Sacramento Kings. And I was talking about this earlier with
Matthew Thomas himself, like even the bad teams have talented players,
like the Pelicans have. Herb Jones is good. He was like,
did he win Rookie of the Year. He was a
Rookie of the Year candidate, Like cidiqe Bay can drop thirty,
(02:28:44):
Zion Williamson is a good player. Jose Alvarado is a
good role player. Jordan Poole dropped fifteen and he can
do that on any given time. They have good players,
but it still doesn't make the hurt any lessoned. And
again like with the Kings, like Keegan Murray is a
good young player who's dropping twenty plus points at this point.
(02:29:05):
Russell Westbrook, we know what he can do, and he
was knocking down Three's. Demart de Rozan is an all
time bucket getter. Dennis Shrewder Rockets legend, another Rockets legend.
It was a revenge game for Westbrook and Dennis Shrewder.
Oh they could they could really lose. Yeah, they could
really lose his next four c Okay, what come on, man,
because we're not losing to the Clippers, realistic, because they
can go to La Lakers, then Cleveland and then the
(02:29:27):
guy who win against the Pacers.
Speaker 4 (02:29:28):
The Pacers are non existent.
Speaker 1 (02:29:29):
They just blew up the whole team.
Speaker 2 (02:29:31):
Well, yeah, their achilles is blew up too.
Speaker 8 (02:29:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:29:35):
I think they're gonna be fine. I still think they're
gonna I have stood strong on this. I am going
to continue to stand strong on this. The Rockets you
heard it here first, you heard it here lest they're
finishing top three in the West. Now the Spurs are
making a charge. I thought it was going to be
Thunder and then probably Rockets, Nuggets and whatever order. Now
the Spurs are in that mix for top four, Lakers
(02:29:56):
are in that mix for top four. I still think
the Rockets are going to finish top three. But yeah,
my confidence is a little bit shaken. And I was
worried a lot about the Oklahoma City Thunder. Turned out
I need to be worried about the Houston Rockets because
they've lost three of the last four and it's been disappointing.
Speaker 1 (02:30:12):
They're going to write the ship.
Speaker 2 (02:30:14):
But you see the warts defensive, defensively and for a
couple of games, not consistent ball handling and turnovers have
been an issue all season long, and it's difficult to
see the light at the end of that tunnel. So
they just don't have a whole lot of elite ball handlers. So, yeah,
fourteen turnovers last night, which isn't crazy, but it's not ideal.
(02:30:40):
They were what did they even average? I had to
go look that up, but they even average in turnovers
last year. I know it's around sixteen this year before
I've been on vacation. You always got to refresh the
numbers when you go on vacation and come back. I
know it's around sixteen turnovers a game before I went
on vacation. I'm not exactly sure what it is now,
but it's not acceptable. It's not good number. It's one
(02:31:00):
of the worst. Yeah, here we go, sixteen point three,
that's twenty ninth in basketball. That ain't gonna cut it.
This is not gonna be good enough. Last year it
was eleven a game. I'm sorry, thirteen point nine a game,
which is eleventh was eleventh in basketball. So three fewer
turnovers a game. That doesn't sound a whole lot light,
But when you lose a game by one point, I
think three turnovers matter. You're losing games by even four,
(02:31:22):
five six points every game in the NBA for the
for the most part, not every game, but you know
a lot of these close games the Rockets have had
lost by one point. They lost by five to the Pelicans,
they lost by three to the Nuggets. You're in these
close games night and night out. Two three turnovers matter
because a lot of times those convert to buckets on
(02:31:43):
the other end for the other team. So certainly something
to keep.
Speaker 1 (02:31:47):
An eye on. Not a huge worry, but something to
monitor for your Houston Rockets.
Speaker 2 (02:31:55):
All Right, that's gonna do it for The Matt Thomas
Show with Ross without Matt Thomas, except for one segment
he did drop by. So thanks to Matt Thomas. Thanks
to Chris Gordy for hanging out for the first couple
hours this program. Thanks to Jonathan Allen for producing all
four hours. Thanks to you for listening. Beveryone's gonna get
Matt Dude music stoo loud.
Speaker 1 (02:32:13):
I'm just kidding.
Speaker 2 (02:32:14):
