Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, super Friends, Ashley Victoria Robinson. Here yet another week
where Professor Jason is called away to hang out with
some of the coolest attending physicians at you Hop and
maybe a certain consulting detective. So to celebrate the release
of Superman on home video Blu Ray Digital however you
(00:20):
want to get it, we have put together a Justice
Gang Mega episode. That might be a term you're not
familiar with, So we are here to break down some
of the character histories of Superman's latest friends from the.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
New James Gun movie. So sit back, relax, and take
it away.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Pass Jason and pasted Ashley.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Look on the ground running. It's a man with a
D on his face. It's mister Terrific.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
That's right, because your Geek History Lesson On, Michael Holt,
mister Terrific is now in session. Hello and welcome to
(01:05):
Geek History Lesson. I'm Ashley Victoria Robinson and I'm Jason
not so Terrific in Man.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Welcome to you a Mine University, because this is the
podcast Geek History Lesson where we take you through one
character or construct of pop culture and teach you all
about him in one hour. And today we have a
guy from a show where a guy wears a hood
and this guy plays in the computers for him. Who
is that, Ashley? Mister Terriffic. You need to say that
(01:32):
louder with like more enthusiastic.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Hey, hang on, we go away from mic mister Jurriffic.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Yep, how's that cool? Better Michael Holt or Curtis Holt,
depending on what connuity you're in. Yeah, but he's gonna
be a big part of Arrow season five. He's gonna
put a big teague, a slop of tea on his face.
He's gonna become a full time guest member. Yeah, yeah,
you know, and he's gonna be pretty nifty and cool.
And I'm not just saying because I've met him in person.
(02:01):
But let's talk right into the beginning of this podcast,
into the ten cent origin, the beginning section of our
podcast where we tell you all the clip note versions
of mister Terrific that you need to know in case
you meet mister Terrific Echo Kellum who plays him on Arrow,
and you can be like, hey, Eckle Kellum, Hey, you're
very tall. But also I know this stuff by the character,
(02:22):
and I learned from the issue lesson let's be friends go.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
So your ten cent origin is that he is, of
course a d C comics character, and we are talking
today about the second Mister Terrific Michael Holt and the
much better known African American Mister Terrific aka White King
aka White King's Bishop. More on that later. He was
(02:45):
created by John Ostrander, who you may remember from a
Suicide Squad fame, and Tom Mandrake and first appeared Inspector
volume three, number fifty four in June of nineteen ninety seven,
another Little Baby comic book.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
YEP, and his.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Team affiliations have been the Justice Society of America and Checkmate.
And his abilities include strap in their lengthy a genius
level intellect and a limic level athlete, a master martial artist,
being undetectable to all modern technologies, extensive nanotechnology in his
mask and costume that provides sensory communications and database retrieval functions,
(03:25):
te spheres that function as a computer holographic projection unit,
projectile weapons, and numerous other uses.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yep. He's a really smart.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
He's really smart, and he has these little silvery ball things.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
And he is currently played by Echo Kellum on the
CW's Aero television show. As Jason mentioned at the top
of this lesson, Yep, let's move straight into the meet cute, which.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Is a term that we stole from romantic comedies, where
we're going to introduce where we meet the characters and
how cute it was.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yes, Unsurprisingly, in the first place that I met mister
Terrific was when he joined the JSA, And obviously his
profile went up a lot when he joined that team,
and even more when he joined the cast of Arrow.
But I loved the JSA and he's a part of
that room that I love, and we're gonna talk more
about that in a little bit. Jason, where did you
first meet the terrific? Mister Terrific?
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I first met him in a story called Identity Crisis,
where this character the wife of elongated man Ralph Dibney.
His wife gets killed and they have an autopsy on
her and the autosi's performed by mister Terrific and Doctor Midnight,
members of the JSA. At the time, I had no
(04:37):
idea who mister Terrific was. I later learned. I later
read the entire JSA series, and I later a bought
an action figure of him.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Really, I didn't know that. That is super cool.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
There you go, and that it's time to move into
history one oh one, the main meat of the lesson
where Ashley's gonna teach you all about Mistertrific.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Right, So a couple notes before we start. This one
is kind of a publication note. As with many characters
of color that have been introduced posts about nineteen eighty,
Michael Holt was originally created solely for the purpose of
bringing some diversity into the DC universe. But that is
okay because he's actually a totally cool character. It is
way more interesting than the original Mister Terrific, who's fun
(05:20):
in kind of a Golden Age silly wit.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
It's also interesting too because this mister Terrific is is
a member of the New JSA, which we literally just
talked about last week.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yes we did, so if you need a Russia, we
have your back. In another note, the mister Terrific when
he shows up, this Michael Holts character, he's basically a
full formed hero. You see his origin and that's it.
So I've put together his character history into a linear
timeline for you to highlight his evolution as a character.
(05:50):
In his emotional journey. Most of this information comes out
in conversations from the JSA series that we talked so
much about lately, especially, So I'm just trying to make
this lesson as easily digestible as possible for you. So there,
let's jump right into Michael Holt's character history. Now, at
a very young age, he showed remarkable intelligence, reading and
(06:15):
assimilating the works of Boeher, Einstein, Planck, and Fineman, the
pantheon of theoretical physics, all by the age of six. Now,
if you know Nils wore diagrams, you know, equals mc squared.
That was like, you know what he did for super
fun happy times As a little kid, he studied advanced science,
(06:35):
space and time while other children struggled through sesame street.
And that is a direct quote that he says it,
which is a little bit insulting, but an apt metaphor,
I think.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Nonetheless, So instead of wan ah two, he was like
neutrinos a.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
String theory, A.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Z ah a a ah.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
He was like how many Adams are there?
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Oh no, he was actually like the count can't exist.
In fact, that mom, that's a puppet. That's a puppet.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
He was the kidarouined Sesame Street for the rest of
us is mate Grover, not real, super Grover especially not real,
but Superman. I don't care mom. Michael grew up with
a mentally challenged older brother named Jeffrey, whom he loved
dearly because he was a good brother. When Jeffrey tragically
died at the age of fifteen, Michael was devastated, and
(07:36):
this heralded one of many tragic familial losses that would
cover his life before he became mister Terrific. Michael Holt
kind of a sad character, yep. He went on to
display a natural aptitude for having natural aptitudes, as he
calls it. He likes to talk about himself and talk
about how greedy is a love.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
It's pretty nifty.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
He is easily picking up and retaining complex skills ability
that other men spent their entire lives perfecting. He's like
that kid in elementary school who's good at everything and
never struggles and you kind of hate a little bit.
And before he began his career as with me, hey,
that was me too. Before he began his career as
a superhero, he already possessed fourteen PhDs to in engineering
(08:20):
and physics, including doctorates and master's degrees in a law, psychology, chemistry,
political science, and mathematics.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
That's a showing off.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Oh my god, yeah, no, no English, I notice or theater.
And was a self made multi millionaire with a high
tech firm called Cyberware because that sounds cool and nineties,
which he subsequently sold to Wayne Tech. And is a
gold medal winning Olympic decathlete.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Yep, now pause.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
A decathlon, for those of you who don't know, is
the hardest thing that you can do in the Olympics.
It is the hardest medal to win. It requires the
most amount of skills. Just want to talk about that
a little bit because it's really incredible. It's a two
day long competition broken down as follows. On day one
there's a one hundred meter race, long jump, shot put,
high jump, and a four hundred meter race. On day
(09:14):
two there's one hundred and ten meter hurdles, discus throw,
pole vault, javelin throw, and a fifteen hundred meter race.
So you basically already have to be a superhero in
order to be a decathlete, and he's like twenty five.
It has a gold medal, so he's the best decathlete.
He's the best superhero.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
It's also basically doing the entirety of the Olympics, the
Summer Olympics, almost it's.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Doing all the track and field events.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
And also, you know, the interesting about it is it
has been said several times that if Batman had not
become a superhero, his training would have allowed him to
become a dacathlete.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Yeah, an amazing to Kathleen. But Michael Holt actually did it.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yeah, so eat it, Batman.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
So take that, Bruce Wayne. So in a lot of ways,
I think that you can see that Michael hol is
influenced by characters like Ted Kord, but with the drive
and success level of Bruce Wayne. Because Bruce Wayne is
kind of like the richest dude in the DC universe.
So welcome once again to the superhero trope of independent wealth,
beyond your wildest dreams.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
He's the greatest superpower ever.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Go don't I wish I had it? Later on, the
accidental deaths of his wife an unborn child are a
devastating blow to Michael in his adult life. He considers
himself responsible for the accident, as he made his wife
late for church by arguing with her about the value
of religion. This particular story point is really important, and
(10:36):
religion and Michael's specific religious beliefs and how devout he
is are a cornerstone of who mister Terrific is and
why he makes a lot of decisions that he does
throughout his career and his life is both a man
and a superhero. Fun fact, you can scour the internet
for a lot of really well put together essays on
like mister Terrific and religion that are just like fan
(10:58):
published that are totally worth check out if you have
time to go down that rabbit.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
You know that that aspect of his character is also
a prevalent storyline in the JSA series.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
It is because you know, religion and superheroes don't tend
to cross over that much unless there are characters that
are in some way imbued by the church.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Yes, and that's why it's important part of JSA because
the Specter is a founding member of the Just society.
The Specter the wrath of God himself, physical proof that
God exists, and Michael Holt still is an atheist.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Yeah that at least like this particular version of godding.
You have to respect his convictions, you really do so.
While contemplating suicide, he is met by the Specter during
his very first comics appearances, who tells him about Terry Sloane. Now,
who is Terry Sloane? While I'm so glad that you asked, Jason,
(11:53):
Terry Sloane is actually the Golden Age superhero known as
Mister Terrific with a really awesomely silly costume.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Yep, it is ridiculous in a great way. Yep.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
He is inspired by Sloan's life stories and the struggles
he overcomes, and immediately decides to take up the name
of Mister Terrific, only later deciding to join the current
Justice Society of America, which was being published in the
JSA title at the time, because it's cool at nineties
that way, and eventually don't.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Sayful words acronyms, only just Jela Jayla.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Jela, So it was it was cool, I promise, eventually
going on to serve as its chairman. More on that later.
During his initial appearance, he wears ordinary clothes and a
leather jacket because it's cool with Terry Sloane's fair play
emblem on the back of it. Initially that was his
only tie back to the original Mister Terrific's costume design
(12:53):
beyond obviously the name. It's something that's dropped pretty soon.
Although mister Terrific does tend to wear costume that does
recall street clothes, he often has a leather jacket. But
you know, the tea comes a little bit later, and
I actually really like the tea, even though it's a
little I like on.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
The door red and the white and the black. I
think it looks really cool.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah. Is it just because those are your favorite colors?
Speaker 3 (13:16):
No?
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Well, there you go. He then wears a T shaped
mask composed of electronic nanites, a black and white costume
with red trim that we were just talking about, and
a collarless jacket of the same colors. And on the
jacket the black sections of the tunic and the jacket
are for form a tea for Terrific, with fair play
(13:37):
written on the sleeves and Terrific written across the back.
So it's cool and it's it.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Really is a cool costume. It's a good looking costume.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Michael Holt Mister Terrific is one of the only comic
book characters who all of his costumes are pretty cool.
He doesn't really ever have a bad costume.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
No, it's not that silly that he has like a
a well I wanted to say a logo, but it's
more like an a motto on his arm. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah, I mean it is silly, but it's not because
because especially if you go back and read this Specter
issue was really powerful and I recommend picking it up.
The idea of fair play because he doesn't feel like
he's had a fair shot at life, and that his
brother had a fair shot and that his wife had
a fair shot. That really defines what he's all about.
(14:23):
And he's often in the JSA when they take on
more of a mentor role. He's called on in order
to moderate and to teach some of the younger, more
fiery characters, like, hey, this is what fair play is.
So yeah, it's silly, but for a superhero, it's one
of the less silly things I think that happens. And
I don't even think that the T mask is really
silly because it just looks It actually looks really cool.
(14:44):
It just looks like a natural progression of a domino.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
I mean, it looks cool. The only thing you have
to ask is like, how does it come on or off.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
They're nanits.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
I know, it dissolves.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
They just just you know, you get some pawns and
it's it's all fine. For a time, he acts as
a spokesperson for as High Co. And consults for the
company on industrial espionage and security matters in exchange for
helping fund a youth center that mister Terrific has started.
He's very into helping young people, which makes him a
(15:13):
natural addition to the JSA. Now, Jason, do you know
what Tyler Co.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Is? Yes, it is the company that was founded by
our man, Rex Tyler.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Yes, it is our man of course, being an important
part of the JSA in his own right because Rex
Tyler Doo is independently wealthy. Over the course of me
working on this lesson, I learned a lot of I mean,
you know that they're all like individuals.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
A lot of Golden Age heroes were independently wealthy.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
But it really kind of like smacks me across the
face a little bit of like wow, like they all
just have a gazillion dollars and that's what it takes
to be a superhero, that's right. Michael Holts also has
a friendly rivalry with that Man as friendly arrivalry as
one can have with the Dark Knight, his opposite number
in the Justice League of America, and fun fact, in
his identity as Bruce Wayne Batman owns mister Terrific's business. Yes,
(16:05):
it's a Wayne Tech subsidy. And I just kind of
want to stop here and talk a little bit about
the idea of opposite numbers. And a lot of people
might not realize that the Justice League and the Justice
Society are often structured to reflect each other. Now, this
is partially based on the fact that the JLA is
derivative of the JSA and that at their core they
serve the same purpose. But there is an incontinuity reason
(16:28):
often given for this, and the reason is that if
a member of one team dies, they'll have an instant
replacement from the other team if needed. And I just
think that's really I've never read that before.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
It's interesting.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Yeah, it's meant it's only mentioned like twice, Yeah, because
I don't think it never actually gets activated, even though
members from both teams die. But I like the idea that,
like the JLA and the JSA got together and they're like, hey,
so you're you and you're you and I'm wonder Woman
and you're Batman. All right, We're good. Yeah, and like
that they might recruit based on the fact they're like, oh,
you got a red arrow, well, like we need a
(17:00):
purple uncle. Yeah, like they need to have Again, It's
not something that is really tread on that much because
the JSA and the JLA like often have really different
types of adventures and they serve different functionalities in the universe.
But I just think that's a cool idea, So insol
Mister Triffic's basically Batman.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Yeah, the tactician of the team.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Yes, yes, yes, you're a smart guy. And a fun fact,
Michael Holt encountered Terry Sloane, the original Mister Trippic, not once,
but twice through the magic of time travel yeah in comics,
with Sloane expressing pride at having so worthy a successor
so kind of like when Miles gets to talk to Peter,
(17:42):
Michael Holt gets a blessing to bring up a religious term.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
We mentioned that storyline a little bit last week when
we talked about per Degaton going back in time and
creating the Joseph McCarthy movement against the JSA. It was
in that storyline.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
There you go if it helps you in the timeline.
Michael Holt has also been noted as the most intelligent
member in JSA in their entire history, surpassing his predecessor
who had previously held that mantle. So you know, if
you don't know by now, he's a pretty smart dude.
And then in Infinite Crisis number five, he is stated
(18:21):
to be the third smartest person in the world, and
this notion now appears widespread in the DC universe. Often
when he's introduced and you know how their little like
logo will come up, it'd be like, mister Drivik, the
third smartest person in the world.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Yeah. I always thought that that graphic was weird.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
You don't think it's funny.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Third.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
I mean it's kind of like, well, I'm the third
best loser. Oh you know, are you one of those.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
People who was like second is the first to lose?
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Come on, well, I don't know. I just thought it
was a weird way to classify your superhero. Now are
you going to talk about who one and two are?
It wasn't going to uh, well, because it has never
really been confirmed.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
It hasn't, but the common theory that I found because
I went look, I was like, what is this list? Yeah,
like I want to know who are the top ten
smartest feedball in in the universe. Most people consider it
to be Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne. Yes, of course
that's arguable. Yes, uh, don't find me on Twitter about it, but.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Yeah, so yeah, most conceptions are that it's Batman number one,
Lex Luthor number two.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Yeah, and then mister Terrific.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Although the interesting thing about it is that I think
Batman is very smart, but I don't know if I
would ever give Batman genius intellect.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
I'm but everyone has a genius level intellect, which which
basically I mean I found over doing the course of
this podcast is code for we have to have them
pull out random, in depth knowledge of something that they've
never talked about before, and like that's the like they're
all genius, Like there's no stupid superhero.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
No, it's that is interesting. But here's the thing, Like,
I totally agree that Batman's really smart, and I totally
agree that Batman knows a lot about stuff that he
shouldn't know simply because he had to figure it out
how to beat the villain.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
So you think he's fixated and driven, but not a genius.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
Yes, because I think that if you were to have
them all take an IQ test, I bet you Michael
Holton Lex Luthor beat Batman on that score.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
I will agree with that. I think Ray Palmer might
even beat him.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Ray Palmer would, Ted Ward would. Yeah, so so would
doctor who created the MetalMan help me out here. Oh
I remember, but I don't think Batman in terms of score,
if I don't IQ test, would beat these people.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Yeah. Yeah, that's interesting.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
I he's very smart, but I don't think he's genius,
like I don't think he's He's Steven Hawking smart.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
He is doctor William will Magnus, will Magnusy, I almost
said t Omara, but I know it's a villain. Oh yeah,
but also your your doctory type.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
He would be Batman on an IQ test.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Yeah, but I mean that also proves that natural ability
ailing downs for so much. Okay, uh so there you go.
He is the third smartest person in the DC universe.
So now we're going to focus a little bit on
a key moment during his tenure as chairman of the JSA,
because I want you to be able to understand what
kind of a leader, mister Terrific.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Sure so.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
In JSA number twenty seven, during a conflict over leadership
of the Justice Society between the former chairman Hawkman and
the then current chairman sand A Jason M favorite character,
Terrific is elected as the JSA's new chairman by his teammates,
despite having not actively sought out the office for me.
(21:45):
This just shows that he's not blindly ambitious like so
many other characters in the DCU are, and that's often
why they're driven to become superhero.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
He takes it very reluctantly. He's just kind of like
I guess.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
But he's willing to answer the call to leadership. He's
willing to do what is asked of him, even if
it's not what he wants to do, And I think
that that's very interesting.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
The other interesting thing about it is that if of
that entire run of JSA, I think he's the best
chairman definitely. I think he's the best leader of the team.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
He is if I was going to make my best
JSA ever, I would probably choose him to be my leader.
I think he's just a solid choice. But you, dear listeners,
we are hoping that you are also willing to answer
the call, the call to head on over to patreon
dot com slash Job and Jawn and help keep your
(22:37):
t spears and your mind university shiny and clean. If
you go over there, you can get all kinds of
cool stuff, like you can get Geek History Lesson a
day early and drop all of this fabulous knowledge on
all your friends at their cool cocktail parties. And you
can even get a geek History Lesson extra podcast where
we are diving deeper into mister Terrific today. So that
(22:58):
is patreon dot com slash with jaw I n. Thank
you to all the mister and missus Terrifics who are
already patrons over there, and we hope that everyone will
go and join their hallowed ranks. Thank you so much
to everyone there.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Huzzah, thank you for that.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
Jason, more about Glad to help us more about mister Terrific.
So we were talking about how he was the chairman
of the JSSA.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
So like j he was the chairman of the JSA's
you know that Ashley, Hey, he totally was.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
He was like a really great one too, and like
Jason said, he wasn't here to do that forever but
he served in this capacity until the team disbanded following
the events of Infinite Crisis. Jason, really quick, can you
tell us, as mister terrific what Infinite Crisis is?
Speaker 3 (23:41):
I'll tell you as a normal person, because I don't
know what a mister impression is. Infinite Crisis where Superboy Prime,
a survivor of the Crisis of Infinite Earth, comes back
with a golden age Superman and Alexander Luthor from Earth three,
I believe, and decides to try to reset the multiver
to their liking. They lose, they get their crap beat
(24:03):
out of them, but the multiverse is still reborn into
fifty two different worlds.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Yes, So, during his time as leader, mister Trivik was
noted as being a fair leader, and he was never
voted out of this role or asked to step down
by his fellow teammates like many others who had served
as chairman before him, making him the first chairman in
history who basically never had a leave. The team just
kind of was like, we're gonna be the JC anymore.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
Until the team disbanded because of the one year break
after Infanit Crisis.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Yes, mister Terrivick remained a member of the reformed Just
the Society of America, which popped up about five seconds later.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Yep, we had to relaunch a new title.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Yep, And we were like, we're gonna spell the whole
name out now. And he even went on to resume
his chairmanship from the last incarnation of the team in
the pages of fifty two, but his leadership responsibilities in
Checkmate around the same time eventually prompted him to relinquish
control of the position two Power Girl. But Power Girl
(25:02):
is pretty cool herself, so we are a okay with
the leader change that goes on there.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
Well, let's let's relax here us for a second, unless
you're gonna tell us exactly who Checkmate is, or.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
I was gonna say, we are going to jump into
his role in Checkmate in just a little bit. Okay,
we're doing all the Justice Society and then we're doing
a Checkmates because it's a little confusing to try and
tackle both of those concurrently. Yes, we all know what
the Justice Society is, but we don't all know what
Checkmate is. Checkmate is a special chessboard into itself. So
(25:34):
during Infinite Crisis, mister Terrific is part of the team
assembled by Batman for an attack on the brother I
satellite responsible for controlling the Omax.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
You know why No, because of satellite couldn't see him.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
Oh yeah, because he's undetectable technology. That was dumb. I'm
really sorry about that.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
I am I have.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Failed this lesson. He said that, and it's like, oh yeah,
he of course plays a critical role. Oh look, and
it's like right here in my notes, invisibility to technology
allows him to reach the satellites for avulsion system.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
I actually read that book. That's why I knew that there.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
I read this book to you a long time ago.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
Are you sure?
Speaker 2 (26:13):
I am? Uh, mister Tervick was not really on my radar.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Mister Trevic is actually invisible to actually be rock as well.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Apparently now when he's played by Igo Keellum and he
sent it crashing to Earth, that's the moslimbortant part. He
grasped a satellite.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
Okay, let's just move on from this debacle.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
During this meeting, he meets and be friends another really
cool African American superhero, Black Lightning. And I'm just saying
that if DC Comics were ever to publish a mister
terrific black lightning, Buddy cop Book.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
I would totally terrific lightning.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
Yes, oh my god, Coby Raykys, Yeah, Lesson, that would
be so dope. And then you can have Static show
up and then all the other Milestone characters.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
It would be so great. Terrific lightning shock, terrific lightning shock.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Great. Then his next major appearance is in the one
year later event that followed Shirley after It that we
just talked about, and as part of the one year
later storyline, Michael Holt is still a member of the
JSA and he also became a part of the United
Nations Security Council's Intelligence agency Checkmate. So now we're going
to talk about Checkmate, and he holds the position of
(27:21):
the White King's Bishop initially because they're all given chess
board colors and suits that they work within. That's the
power structure of Checkmate.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
Yeah, they're all based around chess members and stuff like that,
and some of the other positions are filled by very
famously by other people.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Yes, we're going to talk about a couple of those,
but if you have some other people that you want
to bring up, just kind of drop all the knowledge.
So like I said. Initially he was the White King's bishop.
But when the previous White King, who was Alan Scott
Green Lantern, when he was forced to resign, mister terrific
becomes Checkmate's new White King, which is pretty much the
(28:03):
most powerful person in the White Kingdom that you can bet.
It's really cool. But this unfortunately complicated his relationship with
Sasha Bordeaux, who is Checkmate's Black Queen, because hint, hint,
they were romantically involved at the time.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Do you know who Sasha Bordeaux is?
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Uh, not terribly because I've never read any Checkmate.
Speaker 3 (28:23):
You know exactly who Sasha Bordeaux is because Sasha Bordeaux
was Bruce Wayne's bodyguard in Bruce Wayne Murderer.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
Oh, you're right.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
And then when she gets sent to prison, Checkmate contacts
her and offers to fake her death to get her
out of prison. Right, and that's how she joins Checkmate.
Oh you have taught me something today. By this point,
by the time of this series, the Checkmate solo series
that you've talked about, she has been infected by the
Omac technology from Infinite Crisis, so she's sort of half
(28:57):
robot half human. So he's a little weird.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Uh, yeah, it's she's a complicated gear. Yeah. But this
Checkmate series is written by Greg Rucca. It's very well regarded.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
It's very dense but good well, it's very dense because
it's about politics, but it's also I would say one
of the most I would say original series of DC
for the last like fifteen years. Hi, raise, you have
to know you have to know who everybody is.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Basically do you have to know DC continuity at the time.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
A little bit, Yeah, because they do mention some characters
and they don't really explain them. So there you go.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
Ah, so either have Wikipedia handy.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
So mister Drimik had also given up his chairman position
in the JSA at the time, which had been taken
over by a power girl that we talked about just
a few minutes ago. He had also established an ill
defined mendorship with Firestorm during this time over these missing
over the Missing year, and the specifics of their meeting
has never been documented, and their friendship doesn't end very well,
(30:05):
which is kind of unfortunate because I think these are
two characters that would be great paired up together, and.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
So, you know, I have a little hope that maybe
in a grossover.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
We'll see them get to DoD kinsw a universal.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
That's cool. Yeah. By the way, I just want to
point out to everybody that another member of the Checkmate Council,
Amanda Waller, was a white queen. Yes, she was mentioned.
Alan Scott King Faraday was the White Queen's Bishop. That
is very famous old school DC character Nice Fire from
the Just League International was the Black King's Knight.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Oh, I didn't know that.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Count Vertigo was the White Queen's Night. Boo the August
General in Iron He is a character from the Grade ten,
also a Grant Worst character. He was the Black King's Bishop.
Rocket Red was the White Queen's Night. Also of the JLA,
the JLI and very famously Snapper Car was a pawn ah.
(30:57):
Oh that's so sad but so appropriate.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Michael Holt is forced to face his issues with faith
once again when the JSA confront Gog, a god of
the Second.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
World, which we talked a lot about last.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
I was gonna say, if you want to know more
about that particular storyline, please go listen to the JSA
lesson because I'm not going to talk about it in
that much depth. But it is really kind of like.
He's a dense but very interesting storyline. Not only is
Gog incapable of hearing Terrific due to his lack of faith,
but during a trip to Earth two of the New Multiverse,
(31:31):
Michael Holt encounters his Earth to counterpart, who is now
a devout believer after having a religious experience on the
day his wife survived her accident. So on Earth two,
as with many characters, the Michael Holt Mister Terrific, there
is the inverse of the character that we know from
Earth one, and during the Final Crisis of Humanity, the
(31:53):
war between Dark Side and the human world, Mister Terrific,
along with Cheetah and Snapper Car are left what was
that again? One more time? Nice Gotta do it three times?
Are left trapped in the ruins of Checkmate headquarters, unable
to get past the brainwashed meta human and caring for
(32:13):
Sasha Bordeaux, who prefers using her Omac programming to shut
down her bodily functions rather than falling prey to the
anti life equation. So he got a whole bunch of
drama there, and Sasha is not helping, forcefully waking up Sasha,
thus condemning her. Michael Holt has no choice but to
activate a new Omac population program to obey him rather
(32:35):
than Brother I, and to protect the last few humans
against the new Justifiers. I think this is kind of
an interesting story for him because you're having a microcosm.
Michael hold is losing the second most important woman in
his life, the second really important romantic figure in his life,
to the OMACs. Yep, so he kind of can't catch
(32:55):
a break, not really, no, and he winds up going
back to the Justice Society of America and more bad
stuff happened. Because you can't be a superhero and not suffer.
It's kind of like being Chief O'Brien's right. In the
just A Society of America Volume three series, Mister Terrific
takes over the research just as a low level villain, Tapeworm,
(33:18):
appears on the news, taking hostages and demanding that the
Wildcat show himself. All American Kid and King Kimera must
remain in the Brownstone. Mister Trivic retreats into his lab
and the rest of the team leaves to help Wildcat.
All American Kid goes into the lab and stabs Mister
Terrific in the back pretending to have been mind controlled,
(33:40):
He literally literally gets stabbed to the back by one
of his teammates. Yep, just as Society members arrive back
at headquarters to discover mister Terrific has been attacked, and
Doctor Midnight tends to his wounds, hoping to save him,
but as so often happens in comics, it's only a hope,
and in the end mister Terrific's a it comes to
(34:00):
his injuries and Alan Scott reports to his teammates and
the world that he has died. However, Alan Scott is
able to use his power of the Green Flame to
slow down time around mister Terrific's body in the hopes
that he can be healed before brain death occurs. It's
a really interesting way of basically putting him in cold storage. Yeah,
(34:23):
but you know, using cool comic book stuff. Michael Holt
is restored to life because comics by the magic of
the New Doctor Fate, and he attacks all American Kid,
revealing that he is actually the teenage psychopath known as
Kid Kernievel, and he subdues him and puts them in
jail because he's a good guy and doesn't murder people.
By going around and stabbing them in the back in
(34:45):
their laps. For a short time during his recovery, Michael
is forced to use a wheelchair, although he still finds
time to upgrade Mister America's whip. Who is mister America?
Don't worry about it. It's basically just a thing that
he does to pass some time. Also, interestingly enough, mister
Terrific is the second major DC character to spend a
(35:06):
significant amount of time in a wheelchair, following Oracle. I
just think that's really really interesting. Then the New fifty
two happens, Jason, what's that old? New fifty two?
Speaker 3 (35:17):
New fifty two is where d C Comics decided to
reboot their entire universe, and they did so by Barry
Allen being like, I missed my mom, and he goes
back and tries to save his mom. Doesn't quiet work out,
and when he tries to restore the timeline, everything's changed. Superman, Batman,
and Wonder Woman have only been around for five years,
and they're a lot lot younger, and basically everything that
happened before didn't happen. That's right.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
So in September of twenty eleven, Mister Terrific received a
self titled ongoing series, written by Eric Wallace and drawn
by Roger Robinson. As part of DC's New fifty two,
he finally got a solo series. Michael Holt begins sporting
a new costume that was fun fact designed by Khalie Hamner,
and he's also.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
Interestingly different though a just he doesn't wear the jacket.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Well, you're right, but it was different in the way
that all New fifty two costumes were different. They were different,
but not that different for the most part. He's also
in a relationship with Karen Star aka Power Girl. I
kind of like that, and that's something that I would
like to see more of when he makes his inevitable
return to comics. However, on January twelfth of twenty twelve,
(36:23):
DC Comics announced that they would be ending six of
the lowest selling New fifty two titles in April, replacing
them with six different titles in order to revamp the
second Wave. You can't really blame anyone, that's just good business,
and Mister Terrivick was sadly canceled with issue eight in
April of two thoy twelve. The series ends with Mister
(36:44):
Terrific being displaced to a parallel universe, where he continues
to appear in the Earth two series.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Now this was not the first time mister Terrivick had
appeared on Earth too, so I just want to talk
a little bit about that right now. So between two
thousand six and twenty eleven, so basically up until the
New fifty two, an alternate version of Michael Holt from
the New Earth two appeared in the DC Comics stories.
We talked a little bit about that, about how his
(37:11):
wife lived rather than passing away, so that brought him
to a religious like hi and he's very spiritual as
opposed to the atheist scientists that we see on Earth one.
This version is also a college professor who has a
religious experience after his wife was nearly killed. This version
of Paula Holt, his lady is merely left in a
coma rather than dying immediately, so she's not like totally better,
(37:35):
but she's not dead, which is definitely a step in
the right direction. And while contemplating suicide, as you may
remember from his origin at the start of this lesson,
after spending three months trying unsuccessfully to find a cure
for Paula, Michael Holt saves another man who is preparing
to jump off the same bridge that he himself had
planned to plunge from, and this takes him to it,
(37:56):
and he takes the man to a church which is
the nearest illuminated building, and the man he saves praise
for him and saves him in that spiritual sense. It's
actually a really nice moment. And after his wife regains
consciousness the following day, coincidence, I think not. This version
of Michael Holt went on to become a devout Christian.
(38:19):
He helps the Powergirl of New Earth to return home,
which is pretty cool. And when the Justice Society arrives
on Earth too, remember we talked about that, Professor Holtz
confronts his counterpart, Michael Holt from New Earth. Professor Holt
introduces the Justice Society to his wife Paula. Although New Earth,
Michael just introduces himself as mister Terrific rather than revealing
(38:40):
his true name because he doesn't know how that could
affect Paula and whether or not that could send her
spiraling into something horrible. And uh, that's that's where we're
at with mister Drivin.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
Okay, but wait a minute, So everything you just said
happened before the new fithy.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Two on Earth two.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Oh okay, yeah, so that was actually not where we
left him, but it was where we left him like
five seven.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
Well, yeah, it's where we're ending the lesson.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Okay, all right, because I said, like, the last time
I believe we've seen him in the comic books was
in the Earth to World's End series.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
It is, yes, but he's not. He's currently nowhere to
be found in the DC Rebirth continuity. But that's really new,
and I think there's a lot of cool places where
he could show up.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Sure, Okay, I just had to clarify that because I
was very confused because we went to the new VI
they too, and then we back.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
On I'm sorry. I just thought that it would be
better to segregate the Earth Tow stuff as much as
possible from the main meat of the lesson. So yeah,
so let's move into recommended reading.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
Yes, this is the section of the podcast where Ashley
is going to recommend three books that you should read
if you are terrific, like missed terrific, And you can
go to geek hissy lesson dot com slash recommended Reading.
You can find little Amazon weit just click on him,
go buy the books, read, enjoy Terrific stories, and a
little bit percentage of your purchase will come back to us,
(39:57):
help us keep the terrific my University going.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Yeah. So my first recommendation is kind of the obvious one.
It is Mister Terrific Volume one, Mind Games. It is
actually the only volume of the new fifty two series. Yep,
you can get it all in one nice volume. If
we ever wanted to see mister Terrific on his own
being terrific and what he is all about, I would
recommend picking that up. It is pretty easy to find.
(40:21):
My second recommendation, of course, has to be the JSA
Omnibus Volume three. Now, I'm gonna recommend that you pick
up volume three because this is the height of mister
Terrific as the chairman. You get to see him in
a leadership position, you get to see him being a mentor,
you get to see what a fair human being he is.
He's putting fair play into reality.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
It also has the dog storyline you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
It does have the gog storyline, which is a very
important moment for Michael Holt. Now, if you really like
this JSA, you can definitely start with the first omnibus,
but if you're going right for that terrific love, jumping
into volume three is what I would recommend doing. And
then my final recommendation is the Checkmate series that we
talked about earlier by Greg Ruck of volume one, because
(41:04):
this is a very different look at Michael Holt on
a team. It is a much different type of comic
book storytelling. But it is regarded as one of the
smartest DC comics published to date.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
And I believe those trades might be a little out
of print.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
They are a little out of print. You can find
them on Amazon. You can find them on Amazon. You
can usually find them for cover price. Cool, but they're
definitely worth checking it out. So those are all of
my recommended readings.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
Nice, So we're going to move into discussion where Professor
Ashley is going to discuss things with us and we
might get extra credit.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Yes, So, Jason, I have a question about comics for you. First, Okay,
they're made of paper dime. Oh why don't they cost
a dime anymore inflation?
Speaker 3 (41:46):
Well that's a hell of communism.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Well we are in America. We just alienate all of
our communist listeners. Do we have communist listeners. If you
are a communist listener, please let us know on our
social media.
Speaker 3 (41:58):
Seriously, I'll shake your hand.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
I don't know we have. I'm sure there's America guy,
all right. So I wanted to know, do you think
that mister Terrific should lead a comic series in DC
Rebirth or would you rather see him helming a new
JSA book or a new Checkmate book. So you're saying,
should he headline a solo series?
Speaker 3 (42:17):
What you're asking? Yes, that's what I'm asking, Okay, because
you just a serious well, I think you probably should
be in a series.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
Because we do talk a lot about on this podcast
that there are some characters that are designed to be
supporting players, there are some characters that just function better
on a team, and there are some characters that are
highlighted better in a solo adventure.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
True, but I also do believe that every character can
work in a solo series if they with a purpose,
if you give that character a purpose, because we kind
of talked about that with another character very recently. I
don't know. I don't think. I don't think mister Triffics
should have his own solo series. I really don't because
we just saw it. Yeah, and it didn't work very well.
(42:59):
It's fun and it's a fine read. It's just not solid.
It's solid, but there's nothing. Once you hit issue eight,
you're kind of like, yeah, I'm done with it. Yeah exactly.
I don't know. I always had a hard time with
mister Trific as part of Checkmate. He seemed out of place. Okay,
he really did. Him and Alan Scott seemed really out
(43:21):
of place in that book, and it kind of seemed
like they were two times in the JSA at the
same time.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
Well because they were both members at the time, they were.
Speaker 3 (43:27):
Kind of cheating. That's what I say. I think he
should just be part of Justice Society.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
Do you think you should lead the Justice Society?
Speaker 3 (43:33):
Oh, I don't care if he leads it or not.
The JSA, like has such a revolving leadership team role,
whatever you want to say. So I don't mind if
he's not the leader because I know it'll just come
around him anyway. So I don't really mind that at all.
I'm more excited for this mister Trific Black Lightning book
that we set up, right.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
Because I've been ruminating on that since I read that
and then I've been thinking about it, and the cool
thing about Black Lightning is he's also a very well educated,
like aerodyte characters. Like, not only are they both really
cool superheroes, but I would love a team the team
of book to be them being science bros. Like the
thing that everybody loves about the dynamic between Tony Stark
(44:13):
and Bruce Banner in the Marvel movies, Like, I would
love to see them do that. And then also like
go and punch people of the face.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
We haven't really seen Black Lightning that much in the
New for You two. I don't even can't even remember
the last time we saw him in continuity.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
I can't remember off the top of my head.
Speaker 3 (44:26):
But here you go, terrific Lightning. You know where they
rent their laboratory space out of Starlets Nope, steel Works
in Metropolis. Yeah, ran by John Henry Irons.
Speaker 2 (44:38):
Oh, that would be so cool.
Speaker 3 (44:39):
And then you have Natasha Irons get a crush on
Michael Holt.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
That'd be so great. I would love that both characters
that are that are currently in the comics continuity, so
a really great way to integrate them.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
Yep. And then you have the perfect way to introduce
Black Lightning and mister Terrific It back into DC rebirth,
because then you can have one of laying electric Superwoman.
Her powers are going crazy electricity based and technology based,
oh dude, and they both have team up and solve
a problem.
Speaker 2 (45:08):
That's so cool. And then Black Lightning's daughter is like
on the outsider sometimes sure when under she's really weird
and doesn't wear much clothing. I think that would be
a great way. I think I think he's going to
be reintroduced, because he will. He's one of those characters
that just sort of comes back around yea, like many com.
Speaker 3 (45:26):
Honestly, I don't remember if his character died during World's End.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
I don't think so. I can't remember he died like
that one time.
Speaker 3 (45:34):
Well because World's End is kind of forgettable, but Earth
to Society is actually quite enjoyable. And I don't think
I've seen him pop up in that book yet. I
could be completely wrong. It's it's tough for me to
remember specifics in that series.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
Yeah yeahah, But I mean I'd be fine if he
bopped up on Earth too as well. Sure, Like I'm
fine if they want to, like shunt all of the
Jasa characters over there, which they kind.
Speaker 3 (45:58):
Of did in the New fifty Yeah, but I think
they're going to reintroduce him back into the main Earth
because we saw Johnny Thunder in DC Rear Birth number one.
Speaker 2 (46:05):
We didn't because as we keep bringing up, like they're
all going to be appearing on television, and they tend
to keep those characters in there, like Earth one Prime
Earth Continuity as well.
Speaker 3 (46:15):
It'll be interesting to see if they let mister Terrific
join the JSA, even though in this universe we already
have a solo mister Terrific who's kind of separate.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
From that you mean on the TV show.
Speaker 3 (46:28):
No, in the comics, because we had the New fifty
two Missterrific who was not part of a JSA. There's
no JSA in the New fety two. Oh, you're right,
you're right, So it'll be interesting to see. But it
counts and it doesn't count. Yeah, So it'll be interesting
to see if they they create a Michael Holt yeah,
or if they go with the original mister Trific. Maybe.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
I wouldn't be surprised if they called him Curtis Holt
to circumvent I think the fact that he like was
not on the Jays.
Speaker 3 (46:52):
Well, I mean watching what they should?
Speaker 2 (46:53):
They should because he should be called Michael Curtis Holt.
Speaker 3 (46:55):
Well watch it, no, no, watch him be called Curtis Holt.
And then if we the New fifty two, mister terrific,
you'll find out that he's the grandson.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
Oh of Michael.
Speaker 3 (47:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (47:05):
I can live with that. Yeah, I could be okay
with that. Would be like Michael's the grandson of Curtis.
Oh is what they'll do, They'll flip it, I see.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
Because Michael Holt is already in the New fifty Okay,
so when we if we, if we meet another mister Terrific,
he'll be probably called Curtis.
Speaker 2 (47:19):
Yeah, so cool.
Speaker 3 (47:20):
Yeah, I'll be fine with that.
Speaker 2 (47:21):
Means he gets the costume reads on.
Speaker 3 (47:22):
Sure any other discussion topics.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
No, I'm going to table the rest of my questions
for our geek history listen.
Speaker 3 (47:27):
Extra cool.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
So let's move on into teaching.
Speaker 3 (47:30):
Tweet. We're in less than one hundred and forty characters
like social media Twitter with a little bird he goes
sweet tweet, Ashley will tell us everything we need to
know about.
Speaker 2 (47:38):
Misterrific Michael Holt. He sure is terrific in mind, body,
and spirit. Hashtag terrific for chairman with the number four. Okay, cool,
I'm going to I'm going like election dye.
Speaker 3 (47:54):
Any final thoughts on mister terrific.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
Mister terrific more thanx seedd my expectation on how interesting
a character he was. I learned a lot in this
lesson and I have fallen further in love with this character.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
Cool. All right, Well, you can also fall further in
love with geek History lesson if you go to iTunes,
Stitcher or SoundCloud also Google play Music, and you make
sure that you subscribe and leave us a review on
all those awesome platforms because it helps other listeners find us.
And if you want to suggest other lessons like maybe
black Lightning, maybe Static Shock Dude, maybe John Henry Iron
(48:27):
steal one of my favorites, you can do that where Ashley.
Speaker 2 (48:32):

We have taught many lessons in the past, but a
lot of people three exactly, have suggested that we do
a geek hish lesson on Guy Gardner.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
Cheers to Guy Gardner, Guy.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
Gardner the Green Lantern and the people that suggested that
are Katie Campbell, Eric Oberholtzer and at Hinkleman Mitch. So

of this podcast not a personal podcast that you can
only hear on Patreon.
Speaker 2 (51:06):
Yes, the first part of the podcast where Professor Jason
is going to lay down all the who's its and
what it's in important facts in case you go to
a Cool Lantern Core party and someone asks you, what's
up with that Guy Gardner.
Speaker 3 (51:17):
Guy Guy is known as Guy Darren with an I
Gardener aka Warrior aka the Grinder aka Green Lantern aka
the Crazy One aka Green Lanner of Sector two A
one four point three aka the Red Lantern aka the
Gardener aka Sharilla Tome aka Guy Joseph Gardner. Oh yeah,
(51:38):
they've changed his middle name a couple of times aka
Honor Guard of the Green Lantern Core. He of course,
is a DC Comics character. He's half human and half
Voldarian depending on the red con What is a Vuldarian
where I'm glad you asked, because they are a humanoid
race of elite warriors with shape shifting abilities similar to
(51:59):
the duralin Ashley, do you have any idea who the
Duralins are? No, they are the race of Chameleon Boy
from the Legion of Superheroes, those little orange guys.
Speaker 2 (52:10):
That's the funny because my brain I was like, don't
say that, you don't care who the Duralins are, and
you made me care because Chamellion boys don't.
Speaker 3 (52:15):
Yeah. Now, the Vulgarians, which is what Guy is half of,
do They can fashion their limbs into weapons as well
as project internally generated energy into munitions. They can basically
make mind bullets or skins.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
Honestly though, seems like someone whose inherent power sets would
be very very conducive to wielding a green lanterns correct
with the hardstruct.
Speaker 3 (52:36):
Well, you see the green lantern. Guy Gardner was born
a Terran Vuldarian hybrid. He was the first known case
of a successful human alien offspring of this species. However,
his extraterational gene was remained rendered dormant by means of
genetic alteration. The full side effects will remain unrevealed. And
if that sounds like a god of gobbledygook, don't worry,
We'll get into it because Dear God, but we're still
(52:57):
in ten cent origin.
Speaker 2 (52:58):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (52:59):
Guy Gardner created by John Broom and Gilkine. His first
appearance was in Green Lantern Volume two, issue number fifty nine,
in March of nineteen sixty eight. He of course was
born on Earth as Tiam. Affiliations have been the Green
Lantern Corp, The Justice League, the Red Lantern Corp, The
Dark Stars, and the Just Sleeque International, And of course
his abilities are all derived from the powers of the
(53:20):
Green Lantern Power Ring, including his uniform, his flight, his
force filled, his space travel, and most importantly his hard
light constructs. Now he's been portrayed by Matthew Settle in
the Just League animated series and also more importantly Ddrich
Bader in The Green Lantern the anime ad series.
Speaker 2 (53:39):
We're a big Dedrich Bader fans.
Speaker 3 (53:40):
It's actually one of my favorite Guy Gardner appearances. Nice
all right, Now we're going to move into.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
The meet cute, where we stole a term from romantic
comedy writing, and we are going to tell you where
we first meet digit character and how cute it was.
Speaker 3 (53:52):
Ashley, I need to know, I must know. I am
dying to know. How do you know, Guy Gardner. When'd
you first meet this guy?
Speaker 2 (54:01):
I honestly don't know because I hate him. I don't
like Guy Gardner at all. I think he's terrible. I
would ask, this isn't gonna be not be a fun
lesson you taught Damien? We did fine. I assumed it
was probably Justice League the animated series because that seems
to track. But like, I have no memory of the
(54:24):
first encounter with his character. I've just always been like
this guy, the green lander with the vest great So
not a Guy Gardner fan. O're here, but that's okay, Jason,
Where did you first meet cute Guy Gardner?
Speaker 3 (54:37):
I met Guy and Gardner in the first tree payerback.
I ever bought The Death of Superman. Yeah, because Guy
appears in it. He's one of his periods where he
is not a green lantern. He wears a leather jacket,
he has a big bowl cut, he has a giant
g on his belt, and he has a yellow power
ring and he has a bowl cut, and he gets
(54:59):
his ass kicked by Doomsday. And at that time I
hated him, But to be honest with you, now I
actually really love him.
Speaker 2 (55:06):
So there is one version of Guy Gardner that I like,
but I think we're going to get to it in
a little bit, so we'll talk about it then.
Speaker 3 (55:12):
Okay, one version of Hey listeners in myn university students,

stick around and you can go find our whole back
catalog at geekhistory Lesson dot com. All right, now, I
got to throw it back to myself, back to you,
Jason all right, now we're to the history one to one,
(57:19):
the main meat, the main soy product, vegan meat of
the lesson where Professor Jason is going to teach you
everything about the rowdiest screen lantern, Guy Gardner. Although Guy
Gardner was created in the nineteen sixties, he was reinvented
by Steve Inglehart and Joe Statton as a parody of
the red blooded American mail and that has remained his
(57:42):
main identity into the modern age of comics. He's now
sort of been adjusted to dude bro football jock by
Jeff Johns, very similar to a Steve Lombard of the
Superman supporting cast member, if you know who I'm referring
to now. Per Steve Inglehart twenty sixteen magazine article all
about Guy Gardner, he said that Stanton's design for Guy
(58:05):
Gardner was based on the character Major Ronald Merrick from
the TV series The Jewel in the Crown, you know
that famous one, as Stanton saw Merrick's entitlement and resentment
as a parallel to Guy Gardner. Now, Stanton also designed
Gardner's famous you know his sort of collar vest uniforms. Yeah,
(58:27):
he also designed that as well.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
Cool, so they they basically made Guy Gardner, who we
know and.
Speaker 3 (58:33):
Love, exactly exact. Now to the fictional character biography, let's
do it. Guy was born and raised in Baltimore to
Roland and Peggy Gardner. Roland, of course, was an abuse
of alcoholic and beat his son regularly. Guy also had
an older brother named Mace. We're not really gonna be
talking about Mace that much, Okay, talk about the worst
names for kids, right, Mace and Guy.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
Maybe it's just advice to Mace guys.
Speaker 3 (59:00):
I think that was a stretch, but sure, like many
of us, guys sought escape in the pages of comic books,
and his favorite was a comicook name General Glory. Now
fun fact, General Glory sidekick Ernie's haircut directly inspires the
high and tight sort of bowl cut thing that we're
used to see Guy sport. And another fact, this was
actually the general glory ness of it all. This was
(59:24):
a Keith Giffen and J. M. Demattius Justice League International retcon.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
Oh, I didn't know that. That's very cool.
Speaker 3 (59:30):
When you think about it. It actually fits really into
Keith Gibbons' sort of goofyer writing I like it, which
I actually really like a Guy eventually became a juvenile
delinquent before going on to play football at the University
of Michigan. That's why he says, go Wolverine sometimes until
he gets too injured to continue, and he wound up
graduating with a degree in psychology. What, Yeah, Gardener really
(59:57):
holds a bacheer's degree in psychology, ashle I was.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
Gonna say something unkind, but I'll keep his face on.
Speaker 3 (01:00:02):
Yeah. Now, his football injury is actually mentioned repeatedly throughout
many Guy Gardner stories, so it's obviously something that really
stuck with Guy. Excuse me, I almost said Kai, Kyle,
Now I actually have to ask you. At the University
of Michigan, Guy actually became good friends with a fellow
(01:00:22):
student there, a fellow student by the name of John
Henry Irons. Do you know who that is? Yes, John Hinckley. Yes,
I like that. I like that little sort of retcon
a lot. Also, because Guy is very involved in the
death of Superman storyline, I didn't know super and so
is John Henry Irons. Well, yes, as he is one
(01:00:43):
of the reign of the titular Superman. Yes, I'll be
honest with you. I don't know if they're very friendly
once they became superheroes, but they knew each other before.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
That's cool, so I can accept that.
Speaker 3 (01:00:51):
I don't know if there's ever been a story where they're.
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
Like, you're still your guy, well, then there should be
DC Comics gonna hire us to write it at any.
Speaker 3 (01:00:59):
Time it is, I haven't read it. So some of
Guy Gardner's early career choices including being a social welfare
caseworker for prison inmates as they adjusted to life on
the outside, and he was also a special education teacher.
Now you might be like, wait a minute, this doesn't
sound like the guy I know.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
I definitely do feel that way.
Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
We're getting there, okay. Also, if you remember from our
how Jordan Geek History Lesson episodes, there are episodes two,
two and two three specifically were where a lot of
times were like, I'm a pilot.
Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
It's one of my favorite jokes.
Speaker 3 (01:01:31):
Now. That joke was because of the Emerald Dawn How
Jordan retcon or how was a drunk and how went
to prison for driving drunk? Well guess what in prison?
Guy Gardner was his caseworker shot. It was the first
time they ever meant God now because of this job
and how hard it was Guy lost his temper and
(01:01:53):
he was fired from being a caseworker for prisoner inmates.
Speaker 2 (01:01:59):
But one must be im and understand.
Speaker 3 (01:02:01):
But that is the first time that Guy Gardner met
Hal Jordan.
Speaker 2 (01:02:03):
Interesting, very interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:02:04):
Soon Aben Sir crashed to Earth. Who's that, Ashley.
Speaker 2 (01:02:10):
He's a pink alien who crashes to Earth and gives
Hell Jordan his power ring.
Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
That is correct, but he didn't mean to give how
Jordan his powers and that's what happened.
Speaker 2 (01:02:20):
I saw the.
Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Movie incorrect, and the less said about that movie the better.
So Aben Sir, in his last act as Green Lantern,
used his Green Lantern power Ring to scan all of
the people of Earth. The ring was to search for
one that was honest as well as a bean without fear,
and the ring found two who were worthy of the ring.
(01:02:41):
Its first choice was Guy Gardner. What his first choice
was Guy Gardner? But Guy Gardner was too far away.
So the Green Lantern Ring is lazy. No. Actually, if
you remember the storyline, Aban Sir was grievously wounded in
(01:03:02):
about moments from death, so he only had as much
time to get a replacement. Although typically the ring just
automatically finds a replacement.
Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
So the Ring was too lazy to find a guy
Garden it was okay, aben Abin Sirr.
Speaker 3 (01:03:16):
Wanted to show the guy how the job works. He
wanted to be like, the donuts are over there, this
is where the good coffee is Avns, there is not
Homer don't ever go to Vega three. So he had
to make sure he had to tell these people this.
Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
All right, So he closer and drunker, So he picked
hard So.
Speaker 3 (01:03:32):
How was closer? So the ring chose how? Now how
eventually found out about Guy, and he actually always kept
Guy in the back of his mind in case he
ever needed a replacement. And there's actually a great Dan
Jurgen storyline in his Booster Gold run the second volume
where Booster Gold travels back in time and convinces Guy
to go visit his dying father, so that how would
(01:03:53):
get the ring first, intentionally making sure that Guy is
further away from Avan. Sirr. Shady, it's a great storyline,
You'm shady. Ape. This will not be in the recommended reading,
but if you have not read that second volume of
Brewster Crole, you're missing out. Yeah, it's great, Ashley, what
is the one quality that Guy Gardner is known for
(01:04:18):
being mouthy.
Speaker 2 (01:04:19):
I'll give it to you his temper, okay, yeah, yeah,
being an ass. I was like, are you going literal
or are you gonna be like no having red hair?
Speaker 4 (01:04:27):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:04:27):
Because you do that to me.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
Well, you see, as I said earlier, this guy Gardener
isn't that bad. So let's learn how he got his
famous temper because comics decided that needed an origin story.
Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
Did he get a kick in the head? Swift? Kick
in the head?
Speaker 3 (01:04:39):
Are you pretty cool?
Speaker 2 (01:04:42):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
See how Jordan, I'm a pilot howl. Jordan.
Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
You also kind of remind me of when you do
your impression of the Flash in droll and you say
I'm Verryen when I do my what what Jason does
this impression of the Flash TV show introduction where he
says I'm very Allen and I'm the Fastests And the
way Jason says it is very similar to the way
he says that I'm viol.
Speaker 3 (01:05:05):
I see see go only for Ashley. See how knew
that Guy was his replacement and an earthquake took Guy
out of commission. So because of this earthquake, Hal had
to make sure that he had to find another replacement,
and he made John Stewart his replacement, who, as we know,
is the African American architect Marine Green Lantern. But when
(01:05:25):
the time came, How finally came to Guy and said,
you should be my replacement.
Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
Guy. You're the guy.
Speaker 3 (01:05:33):
Yep, you're the guy. Guy. So Hal leaves him with
a new power ring and How's old Green lantern battery.
What How didn't know, though, is that he was actually
having a problem with his old lantern and as a
result of this, his power battery explodes. It explodes right
in Guy's face, causes a temporal incident and opens the
(01:05:56):
dimensional barriers to the Phantom Zone where Guy got trapped
in for several years because he got tortured by General
Zod Ashley. In case someone doesn't know, and somebody hasn't
seen Superman one and hasn't somebody hasn't seen Terrence Stam
said you were knear before me one day, Jooryelle or
Man of Steel, you or krypton and Joel ass what
(01:06:19):
is the fandom Zone.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
The Phantom Zone is a prison dimension that I want
to say is primarily used by the Kryptonians, but it
feels like everybody else in the entire gosh Dar and
Galaxy has access to it, and it is, as Jason
referred to, probably most popularly known for housing General Zod
and his lady friend.
Speaker 3 (01:06:37):
It was actually discovered by Joelle.
Speaker 2 (01:06:38):
I didn't know that.
Speaker 3 (01:06:39):
Yep. Yes, Well you might be asking at this point,
if Guy Gardner is in the phantom zone, then how
does this lesson continue?
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
Well, Jason, if he's the phantom zone, how can this
lesson continue?
Speaker 3 (01:06:48):
Well? I was getting to that good see when everybody
thought Guy was dead. Oh, Hal Jordan hooked up with
Guy Gardner's fiance by the name of Carrie Mbo. Well,
her name is carry Limbo. Guy is literally in limbo.
Speaker 2 (01:07:05):
Also, if you refer back to our Hal Jordan episode
How's a Bad Person.
Speaker 3 (01:07:11):
I'm a piler, I'm ana go Hey, I'm Hal Jordan's Hi,
I'm miss Limbo.
Speaker 2 (01:07:21):
Ni I do a really good limbo? Do you want
to limbo with me? Hel Jordan?
Speaker 5 (01:07:27):
N got fa drink? I think you got a dead boyfriend? Right, yeah,
I don't know where he is. Okay, we should get married. Okay,
that's basically what happens.
Speaker 2 (01:07:44):
Jason's actually looking at a stuff Hel Jordan as he
does the impression.
Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
So you see, because Hal Jordan is terrible, he proposed
to Carry and Guy Gardner could see all of these
events from the phantom zone, so his rage built up
and has led to Guy to try to torture Carry
and How during the wedding using telepathy. No joke, Silver
Age comics are fun friends. After being released from the
(01:08:09):
Phantom Zone with the torture he suffered there, coupled with
having been hit recently by a bus, after he gets
out of the Phantom Zone, I'm not joking.
Speaker 2 (01:08:20):
So you get out of those little silver phallic things
that they send people to the Phantom Zone in, or
that's Saran rep shieldy thing, you step onto the street
of insert fictional DC city here, and you get slammed
by a bus like Tony from Skin. It's not immediate,
but it's pretty close. It's funnier if it's immediate.
Speaker 3 (01:08:38):
And he goes into a coma, I almost feel bad
for him. And he goes into the coma for an
undisclosed number of years where it was then discovered that
he had brain damage, No kidding, and then crisis all
infinite Earth happened. Ashley, what's that?
Speaker 2 (01:08:56):
Hey, Well, if you really want to know. You can
go back and check out our crisis class episodes.
Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
Of episodes two eighty two to two eighty seven.
Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Basically, DC was like, there's too many Earths. We only
want one Earth. So they created the Monitor and the
Anti Monitor, and the Anti Monitor ate it and Harbinger
Wave and he pooped out one universe.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
Basically, it was a giant cosmic event that got rid
of the DC multiverse. So during this event, the Guardians
of the Universe, the little blue guys that are the
bosses of the Green Lanterns, split into two factions, the
Guardians of the Universe. They detected this terrible crisis, and
six of the Guardians felt that they should not interfere,
and then the other one said, no, we should. So
(01:09:35):
the ones that decided to interfere in the crisis, they
created their own power batteries, separate of the giant Green
Lantern power body, and they began assembling a small Green
Lantern strike task force. The first Green Lantern they chose
was Guy Gardner.
Speaker 2 (01:09:49):
It was so funny if you said, like, I don't know, serotic,
not too.
Speaker 3 (01:09:52):
No no no ship. So Gardner's brain damage at this
point had manifested himself into an arrogant, violent, unstable, an
often childless new personality, and he also believed himself to
be the last true green Lander and superior to all
the other green Landers, including how Jordan. So Guy was
given the task to recruit this task force and the
(01:10:14):
members of his task work were basically powerful villains of
the Dace universe, and both how Jordan and John Stewart,
the other Greenlanders, prevented Gardner from completing his mission. See
I mentioned earlier that Guy Gardner is the Greenlander and
of sector two eight one four point three, because two
eight one four is the sector of Earth. Two eight
(01:10:34):
one four point one is how two eight one four
point two is John? Three is Guy? Four is Oh
Kyle Rayner. We're gonna get to him.
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
Who's six?
Speaker 3 (01:10:47):
I don't know whether there's six? Simon, No, it's actually Jessica.
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
Jessica beats Simon.
Speaker 3 (01:10:53):
No, Simon beats Jessica. What do you confused about?
Speaker 2 (01:10:56):
Here? He comes before Jessica. Yes, so six would be.
Speaker 3 (01:10:59):
Jess Yeah, yeah, I said sex with Jesska. Whatever. What
are you getting feesed about here?
Speaker 2 (01:11:05):
Are you trying to do a joke that I'm not
getting No, I'm not I no, I think I said
I have Guy Gardner's brain damage right now. You know,
I'm really restraining from making a joke about brain damage
because it's really serious, really not a laughing matter. But
they kind of use it as an excuse to turn
(01:11:25):
Guy into a butt head.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
They used it to make him or to red comment
into it.
Speaker 2 (01:11:29):
Yeah. Yeah, in a way that with other characters, they
just ret call them and they get new person that
like new food, you do. Superman is a little angrier
than the Superman that we're used to up to that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:38):
Look, I'm gonna say this, at this point, Guy Gardner
has been thrown in He was he was suffered an
earthquake and went to a coma.
Speaker 2 (01:11:47):
Huh.
Speaker 3 (01:11:48):
He was thrown into the phantom zone and tortured by Akryptonian.
And also he was hit by a bus and went
back into a coma. At this point, I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
We're lucky he's not a serial killer.
Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
At this point, I think his anger is totally justified.
Speaker 2 (01:12:04):
You know what, fair You're given me a new.
Speaker 3 (01:12:08):
Appreciation the You know, I think we'd all be this
mad if those things happened to us.
Speaker 2 (01:12:12):
Yeah, and he was in a country without socialized medicine.
Speaker 3 (01:12:14):
I think we'd be mad if only one of those
things had happened to us, but he had all three
hit the trifecta of crappy deals getting hit in the head. Yeah. Now,
after the crisis, the Guardians, along with the Zamorans, who
are basically the controllers of the Star Sapphires, they left
the universe to create the next generation of Guardians, and
Guy Gardner was placed under the care of the remaining
(01:12:34):
Guardian turned mortal Appa ale Apsa, who later went on
to become the Mad Guardian Spoilers for a story that
happened in the eighties now on the planet Maltus, in
order to teach Gardner the way of the Core, a
situation with Gardner resented now. Guy Garner eventually escaped and
returned to Earth, but was recaptured by Apa ali Appsa
(01:12:55):
with the assistant of two Core Honor Guards, intending to
reclaim Guy Gardner's power ring at the request of his
old fiance Carrie Limbo. How Jordan pleaded on Gardner's behalf
for his freedom and was granted with no return of
gratitude from Gardner. So how Jordan's sort of saved Guy Gardner,
and Guy Gardner was like, eh, buzz off.
Speaker 2 (01:13:15):
I mean honestly though, like if one of your close
buddies slept with your girl and proposed to her while
you were trapped somewhere, would you ever forget?
Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
Would you be nice to him? No?
Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
I don't feel bad for her. Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
Then I was said by a bus I especially wouldn't
forgive him? Yeah, truly. Now, after the defeat and death
of the Mad Guardian, who, of course, as I said,
was Apa Ali Appsa. I keep saying that name because
it is an important Guardian character in Greenland and.
Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
Lore, and so few of the Guardians have names.
Speaker 3 (01:13:39):
The Guardians returned and assigned Guy Gardner to be the
official Green Lanner of Sector two eight one four, while
they assigned hol Jordan to recruit new core members in
the universe. So guys on Earth and he's the big
green Lander at the time. Cool. So Guy Gardner became
a founding member of the Justice League International. Oh yes,
now this happened after the JLA disbanded. In the nineteen
(01:14:02):
eighty six storyline Legends, which was by Lenn Wien, John
Ostrander and John Byrne, talk about a power Murderer's row
of Talent. Now, actually we call this the ba Ha
ha ha League. This is sort of the Keith Giffen
run where they took the league a little bit sillier.
I know this is a league that you are very
fond of.
Speaker 2 (01:14:21):
Yeah. In fact, I have a collage of postcards of
famous comic book covers and one of them is a
Bojaha Does League cover and Guy is front and center.
Speaker 3 (01:14:32):
So I want to ask you, Ashley, can you name
how many how many of the original members of the
original member Issue one members, because there are plenties that added.
Can you name and just let you know there are one, two, twelve, four, five, six, seven,
eight nine.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
Well, a traditional Justice League is only seven.
Speaker 3 (01:14:55):
This is the Boha League.
Speaker 2 (01:14:57):
Guy Gardner, that is correct. Ted Cord, Blue Beetle, that
is correct. Booster Gold.
Speaker 3 (01:15:05):
Booster Gold is not in the original lineup. Okay, he
comes in like I think Issue.
Speaker 2 (01:15:10):
Four or five, Fire and Ice.
Speaker 3 (01:15:12):
Fire and Ice are not in the original lineup. Rocket
Red not in the original lineup. I don't know, you're
missing a whole bunch of them. They're all that cover
you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:15:30):
Give me a hand, Batman.
Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
That Batman is the team leader on cover.
Speaker 2 (01:15:36):
Give me a hand, She screams a lot Banshee, silver, silver,
sinklow know blac Canary.
Speaker 3 (01:15:44):
Correct, she is.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
You have four of the nine, give me another. Hent.
Speaker 3 (01:15:50):
His costume is yellow and blue Booster Gold. No, not
in the original time. He is a maggy.
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
Guy, Booster Gold.
Speaker 3 (01:15:59):
He's magic guy. Booster Gold. Has nothing to do with magic,
all about time travel and sci fi.
Speaker 2 (01:16:05):
I'm constanty.
Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
Nope, Blue and yellow wears a big helmet.
Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
A helmet.
Speaker 3 (01:16:12):
He wears a helmet. He's blue and yellow. He's magic,
and he lives in a giant tower. How many he's gold.
He's yellow and blue Booster Doctor Fate. This was a
character that was first introduced in Crisis on Anthonite Earth.
It was a female version. Nope, Doctor Light, Yep, there
(01:16:34):
you go. You have two more?
Speaker 5 (01:16:38):
Do it?
Speaker 2 (01:16:38):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (01:16:39):
This this character the superhero loves cookies.
Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
Oh Hunter.
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
It was correct, and this last person recently had a
son in a recent storyline Superman. No Lois Lane. No,
why Lois Lane be a member of that?
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
I don't know. She's you love her?
Speaker 3 (01:16:57):
She could do it, you would, but she's not a superhero.
This character is a new God.
Speaker 2 (01:17:03):
Oh scot Free.
Speaker 3 (01:17:04):
Yeah, mister Miracle. So there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:17:05):
That is the original fun everybody we figured in a square.
Speaker 3 (01:17:09):
The poster like coming into is Batman, Black Canary, Blue Beetle.
Oh I forgot one, Captain Marvel. I'm sorry, Captain Marvel,
Doctor Fate, doctor like Guy Gardner, Martian manor mister Miracle.
That is the original lineup. All those other characters you
mentioned come later. Yes, So I want to ask you this. Okay, Actually,
even though we went in a big roundabout and probably
(01:17:31):
lost half of our listeners.
Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
I think it was fun. I think people liked it.
Speaker 3 (01:17:34):
I hope. So what do you think the legacy of
the Justice League International is? Because I'm not going to
talk much about the just League International because I almost
feel that that should be a Justice League International kiss
for us.
Speaker 2 (01:17:49):
I would love to teach.
Speaker 3 (01:17:51):
By the way, everybody, we love the Justine International. We
have the omnibus of volume one. Yeah. Actually, what do
you think the legacy of this league is? This league
is very memorable in comic creators and writers and fans
still talk about this run now.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
I mean I think if you're if you're sort of
looking at the current sphere or or currently what we're
doing in pop culture. I think the legacy of it
is very much blue and gold. Like. The thing that
everyone loves that comes out of this specifically is the
tone shift for Booster and Beetle, But I think that
happens for all the characters here. It does, but they
are the breakout stars of it. Sure Like if you,
(01:18:28):
if you, if you took this question to anyone who
would know what the Justice International is, the first two
people everyone's going to think are Booster and Beatle, Like
they are the faces of this team. I think what
this does in terms of, like if we're looking at
it from like a more meta perspective, and in terms
of what it does for storytelling and Justice League stories
(01:18:49):
in particular, it makes it okay to bring back some humor, because.
Speaker 3 (01:18:56):
This was the first like humorous run.
Speaker 2 (01:18:58):
The broadest age of comics is very much a shift
away from the silliness of the Silver Age, and it's
where we start to get where we edge into what's
considered modern comedy, yeah, which Matthew Peterson likes to call
I'm going to armor my head, and most of that
is through the auspices of Alan Moore and Frank Miller,
and this is very much a rejection of that, but
(01:19:21):
it is still taking everything that is happening to them
as seriously. But we're allowed to have a couple punchlines
here and there. And I think that's where the real
legacy comes from, because I think there's a lot of
books that are striving to be this balance and they don't.
They can't do it. And I actually think Giffen and
Dematius are a big part of that, because if I
(01:19:43):
was to sit here and think of tonally, what do
I think as closest to that, it's Scooby Apocalypse, which
is kind of they also write, which is kind of
the same thing.
Speaker 3 (01:19:51):
You should explain what Scooby Apocalypse is just case.
Speaker 2 (01:19:54):
Scooby Apocalypse is an excellent book with questionable art. The
later on it goes how reporter does the art in
the beginning, and it's truly studying it. If it weren't digital,
I would have bought a page from it where it
imagines what if the Scooby gang came together in their
adult life during a zombie.
Speaker 3 (01:20:10):
Apocalypse, an actual, real zombie apocalypse.
Speaker 2 (01:20:13):
And it is set in a more modern, less fifties
idealized world. They all have real jobs. They're not friends
going into this, but it takes itself very seriously. These
stakes are real. It is life or death. People die constantly.
It's a very mature audience book. But there's a joke
every few pages, and.
Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
I think, and it's written very much, I think in
the Bojaha style.
Speaker 2 (01:20:36):
I agree, I agree, And I think that's why we
call it the Bojaha Justice League, because it reminded us
that we could have jokes and still tell a really
incredible story. Because JLI at its best, I think can
go toe to toe with any Justice League. Yeah, it's worse,
it gets a little bit silly. So I'm sorry. There's
a really long, wainted answer to your question. But I
(01:20:59):
just really like this team, and uh, I think this
is the best team for Guy to be on.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
Yeah, sure, all right, let me tell you a little
bit about it. In his time with the Just League International,
Guy Gardner resented Batman's obvious leadership of the group, of course,
going so far to challenge the Dark Knight to a
fifth fight, and Batman downed Guy with one punch after
Guy took off his ring. And actually, I actually I
think we should share a panel from that on the
Twitter because I made.
Speaker 2 (01:21:24):
A note of it.
Speaker 3 (01:21:24):
I've seen it before. It is one of the most
famous panels in all of comic books. The other members
left him lying on the floor, and when Guy woke up,
he banged his head on a console and knocked himself out.
Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
This is like two more instances of probable swre up
to five SWRE up to five obvious grievous wounds to
his head, and at this point has personality changed were
to where he would be kind and gentle until he
hit his head again six six at.
Speaker 3 (01:21:51):
A later point, and Guy became kind, sweet and boyishly
innocent and a perfect gentleman to the female members of
the group.
Speaker 2 (01:21:58):
You know, I'm tempted to, uh when I post this
episode before it goes live to say, take a drink
every time Guy Gardner suffers brain damage.
Speaker 3 (01:22:04):
Noill. At this point, he's going to his head for
a seventh time. I'm not exactly certain when that happens,
because he goes back to being the ass. Okay, okay,
so when it happens, it's fine. A Guy became ormantally
involved with his fellow leaguer Ice, even learning some redimentoring
Norwegian because she's from Norway.
Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
I mean she is for all intents and purposes. What
if Elsa from Frozen was a superhero?
Speaker 3 (01:22:26):
Yeah, before we even knew what Elsa was. Yeah, but
it's the same mythos that they come from. But he's
actually callous to her and slow to admit his feelings.
Although they basically stay together until the mid nineties, which
is going to happen. I'm kind of skipping ahead on
Ice is all I'm going to talk about it. They
actually stay together until the mid to late nineties to win.
Ice is eventually killed by Overmaster, which is something that
(01:22:49):
happens I think in certain relationships. Am I right? I
mean if I had a nickel for everyone of my
exes that were killed by the Overmaster, then I'd have
about fifty five cents. You fifty five xes h. I
don't know what you mean. Uh no, after your little
Black booklet.
Speaker 2 (01:23:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:23:03):
After Hal was reassigned to Sector two eight one four,
Gardener's response was the challenge Hal Jordan to a fight
where the loser would have to quit the Green Landing core.
Speaker 2 (01:23:13):
Do you think if you're a green lantern of section
two eight one four that just every six months? The
Guardian's like, hey, hey, Hey, coming for performance reviews?
Speaker 3 (01:23:22):
Yeah, just like every corporation.
Speaker 2 (01:23:24):
All right, you've been great, you're crushing it. Yeah, a
lot of fun. No, you can't be held if anyone
except Hal Jordan. Why because we're going to replace you
with Hel Jordan.
Speaker 3 (01:23:35):
Okay, oh God, I'm a by it.
Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
All right, God, this goes better when it's not Hell
we'd bring into the room. But do you think that
do you think every like it feels like Hal is
he's the Garden of Earth? He's not. Do you think
it's disappointing to be literally any other Green lantern except
Hal Jordan?
Speaker 3 (01:23:51):
Yep? Okays the Giant Space Corporation. I bet you they
replace them all left.
Speaker 2 (01:23:55):
And right, their space at and D. That's at the
time of this recording. Okay, soy like we're going to
fight and the loser's got to quit forever. Except we
know that one happened. Guy Gardner lost and he had
to surrender his ring.
Speaker 3 (01:24:06):
That's what happened.
Speaker 2 (01:24:07):
Did he do it?
Speaker 3 (01:24:08):
What do you mean?
Speaker 2 (01:24:09):
Did did he surrender his ring? Or was he like
screw off?
Speaker 3 (01:24:11):
Well, I mean how Jordan sort of took it from him. Okay,
I'm kind of greeting those with sure. Now, before we
get to the Yellow Ring period of Guy Gardner's life,
I thought it would actually be fun to introduce you
to some of Guy Gardner's brashest quotes and comic books.
I don't think you because he's basically lipped off to
everyone in the DC universe. So actually, I'm going to
give you a Guy Gardner quote, and I'd like you
(01:24:32):
to identify or guess who you think he's saying it to. Okay, okay,
I'm going to help you out here. None of them
are to doctor Fate. Okay, okay, here's the first one.
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:24:44):
I'll be honest with you. I don't I'm not even
certain what Guy Garter should sound like.
Speaker 2 (01:24:47):
So you should have a Boston accent.
Speaker 3 (01:24:49):
Oh dear god. No, So here we go, too late,
bug one, soon to be corpse coming up? Now, who
do you think? Yes, too late, Buzz, you are correct.
It was Guy talking to Blue Beetle in Justice League
America number sixty nine.
Speaker 2 (01:25:07):
All right, I'm doing real good.
Speaker 3 (01:25:08):
Yeah, you're one for one. Okay, there you go, take
your pick. Burial or cremation. Obviously a villain. Yeah, it
is a villain that you know.
Speaker 6 (01:25:22):
I mean that don't narrow the field too much dark
side uh incorrect, especially doomsday doomsday okay, okay, And then
here's the other one.
Speaker 3 (01:25:33):
Don't what's out boy scout? Put this Superman let me
finish the box they call it. Please don't miss out
boy scout. Put this doomsday guy in a pine box
or all crawl off of this gurney and kick both
of your butts. Definitely Superman is Superman. These all these
quotes are from the Death of Superman storyline. It's so
interesting that was actually from Adventures of Superman number four
(01:25:55):
ninety seven.
Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
Nice.
Speaker 3 (01:25:57):
Yeah. So now if you liked some of that fun
we your non boss and accents speaking, and you get

Speaker 3 (01:26:51):
Now, Guy eventually gets a solo series and in it
he had a yellow ring, Ashley, do you know how
he got that ring?
Speaker 2 (01:27:00):
He was fearful. Sinastra was like, hey, didn't work with
hal Jordan may able to work with this second rate
green lantern. No, I have no idea how you got
that yellow ring.
Speaker 3 (01:27:10):
Well, his yellow ring is the real yellow ring of Sinastra.
It is actually Sinestro's original yellow ring because Sinatra at
the time was dead. Oh now, Sinastro's ring was kept
inside the crypt created by the Guardians of the Universe,
and using his justly connections, Guy contacted the intergalactic bounty
hunter Lobo.
Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
Oh boy, your favorite.
Speaker 3 (01:27:31):
He's a big, white and black bounty hunter. Guy Lobo. Here,
he's a bashtitchies, inexplicably irishan krypton.
Speaker 2 (01:27:42):
It is a little weird, it's a little The actor
does a great job.
Speaker 3 (01:27:47):
I know you all know there's Lobo. I know you
all know Tex Willerman, good old pal of Man. Yeah,
well he was median Guy. I helped Guy into the crypt.
So the two eventually found the crypt and Guide has
governed exactly what he came for. He battles the very
spirit of Sinestro because he was dead to get the ring.
(01:28:10):
And when Guy won, he donned the ring, and he
discovered that it had no power because this yellow ring,
this is pre Sinastro Corps, did not use a battery
to recharge. Instead, it needed to be used against the
power of green lanterns so that it could suck their
residual energy to restore its power, which Guy Gardner actually
discovered when he fought Killowog. So another flaw of this
(01:28:33):
ring was that the rings language was Kurregarian, which has
actually been Sinestro's language. It's Sinestro's native language. So actually
this ring would talk to him in Korregarian, and Guide
had no idea what this ring was telling.
Speaker 2 (01:28:46):
Him, right, because previous to this, his green lantern Ring
had acted as a universal translator, so he never had
to learn alien language.
Speaker 3 (01:28:52):
Yes, so Guy Gardner returned to Earth to pick a
fight with Superman, but eventually rejoined the Just League right
at the time to battle the monster Doomsday, who is
the big, bony, scaley guy who kills Superman. Fun fact,
during the reign of Superman's storyline, when four different versions
of Superman appeared after Superman's death, Guy fought and later
became allies with the last son of Krypton Superman, who
(01:29:15):
is actually one of my favorites, the Eradicatory.
Speaker 2 (01:29:18):
Cool Sunglasses Cold Sunglasses.
Speaker 3 (01:29:21):
Then Emerald Twilight happened co City, How Jordan's hometown was destroyed,
and How asked the Guardians of the Universe to bring
it back. They said no, and How went bonkers and
murdered every green lantern in the universe. Because I'm a.
Speaker 2 (01:29:35):
Pilot, Emerald Twilight is my favorite title for a green
Lantern book. I think it's such a beautiful title.
Speaker 3 (01:29:42):
So eventually, as I said, this, power hungry hol Jordan
is killing green lanterns left and right, going crazy. Ganfit,
one of the oldest Guardians Yes, came to Guy Gardner
to offer him the last Green Lantern power ring that
was made before how Jordan basically murdered everybody on Oa,
(01:30:03):
the home planet. Gardner refused, which led Ganta to decide
to entrust it to Kyle Rayner, which you can learn
more about because he's my favorite Green Lantern in Geears
for Us. In episode sixty four Early Days, Yes Now,
Guy eventually led a group of heroes to Oa to
find out what happened to the Green Lantern Corps, and
guys in his team were ambushed and quickly defeated by
(01:30:27):
Parallax Now Ashley, who is Parallax Hal Jordan. Yes, it's
actually the embodiment of Fear in the universe, but at
the time it had possessed Guy. Excuse me, how Jordan
and how Jordan had a badass. Darryl Banks design costume
and he looked so good.
Speaker 2 (01:30:42):
Oh Man, Darryl Banks, what a superstar?
Speaker 3 (01:30:44):
Oh Man. Action figure Spotlight. I'm going to tell you
right now this has nothing to do with Guy Gardner,
but there is an amazing DC Direct Parallax action figure.
When they started, when Green Lantern came back for Greenland
and Rebirth, they made a Parallax action figure and it
is a whole Adjason's I have never been able to
find this act figure. If you have a lead, send
us a link, Please do, please do. Everybody will to
(01:31:06):
send me eBay links.
Speaker 2 (01:31:07):
It's fine.
Speaker 3 (01:31:08):
So Guy was defeated by Parallax and Hal defeated Gardner
and destroyed his yellow ring. Dun dun dun dun dun
dun now Ashley. Yes, Guy awoke in a hospital with
more brain damage after spending three weeks after his eighth
(01:31:29):
cola his eighth head injury.
Speaker 2 (01:31:33):
As somebody who listens to a lot of true crime
and murder podcasts, uh, he should be a full blown
serial killer by this point. Yeah, it usually takes about
three too many hits to the head before that happened.
Speaker 3 (01:31:43):
Well, this may explain a later story online with Guy
actually so Guy eventually he was like, I gotta find
a new way to acquire power. So eventually found new
powers and bed a deep and then Naba Jungle in
the Amazon. Upon exploring an ancient temple, Guy find the
chalice Phil with a strange liquid, and he does what
anybody would do when you see a strange liquid in
(01:32:04):
an old temple, you drink it. This caused Guy to
undergo a radical transformation, and this water discovered and activated
his inactive DNA from the Voldarian aliens that I mentioned
in the tents in Origin, he could suddenly and painfully
change his body into a myriad of weapons. And as
(01:32:26):
he transformed, he grew to a massive seven feet and
became covered in ritualistic Vuldarian tattoos. He became known as Warrior.
And this is when the Guy Gardner solo title was
redawned to Guy Gardner Warrior.
Speaker 2 (01:32:41):
And this sounds scary.
Speaker 3 (01:32:44):
This is a period. Actually you probably should share a
picture of Guy Gardner Warrior making with all the ritualistic
red tattoos. Oh, I've seen the covers. It is Bunkers,
it is Bunkers crazy. And this period of time is
best forgotten. So that's why I'm just gonna move. So
Guy Gardner during this time, he actually kept cropping up
(01:33:04):
as a recurring character in Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern series.
That is true where I think this is so awesome.
He opened a Planet Hollywood type restaurant called Warriors that
was dedicated to the Green Lanterns.
Speaker 2 (01:33:17):
I'm gonna be honest, I also love this detail. I
think if DC comics really wanted to make some money,
they would have a version of this on their backlot tour,
sure or the one from Kingdom Come.
Speaker 3 (01:33:28):
It was also during this time that he was thought
killed during the Our Worlds at War crossover. Hey, but
he was actually later discovered to be trapped in a
pocket of hell called the Gorge in the DC country
of Paula Castas. Yes, so Guy Gardner got tortured again,
probably got his ninth head injury. Oh my god, did
we get into double digits? We I don't know. A
(01:33:49):
guy next appeared prominently in Green Lantern Rebirth in two
thousand and five, which is a mini series by Jeff
John's and Ethan van Scriber where his vulgarian DNA is
strangely overwritten by his humans. When Parallax the Entity possesses
Gardener and several Green Lanterns, how Jordan's ring splits into
and Gardener's ring is restored to him and a bunch
(01:34:09):
of other weird stuff is retconned away. Now Parallax the
Entity is defeated by the combined effort of all five
active Green Lanterns, including Guy Gardner. Excuse me, all four
active Green Lanterns at the time that was a misrd
online part. That's okay, The Gardeners, excuse me, the Guardians
was to be called the Gardeners. They selected Guy Gardner
(01:34:31):
as one of their senior officers and made him an
honor guard for the new Green Lantern Corps because all
the guard remember the Green All the Green Lanners were killed,
all the Guardians were killed, so there is a there's
not a lot of Green Landers in the universe. And
he takes charge in the Green Lantern Corps Recharge mini
series as one of the three Green Lantern Instructors on
Oa to train all the new Green Lanterns. Then we
(01:34:52):
get to Infinite carosos Hey, actually, what's infinite Crisis?
Speaker 2 (01:34:57):
So Superboy Rhyme comes back to life and he's real mad,
so he punches a hole in the universe and Alexander Luthor's.
Speaker 3 (01:35:04):
There, who's Superboy Prime?
Speaker 2 (01:35:05):
Though he's the Superboy from our Earth because our Earth
is Earth Prime.
Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
That's right, he's a remnant from Crisis on Infinite Earth,
which we talked about earlier in this lesson. Now Guy
takes over the main Green Lantern Army and he leads
the Corps in defense of OA against Superboy Prime, creating
a wall of energy to slow the rampaging team and
calling a Code fifty four with the authorization of the
use of extreme and lethal force against an enemy for
(01:35:32):
the Green Mattern. Core Guy supervises the final capture and
imprisonment of Superboy Prime, locking him in a red Sun
Eater cage, which of course takes away his powers.
Speaker 2 (01:35:42):
I love the phrase Sun Eater. I know it's really
silly sci fi nonsense, but I just love the way
it sounds.
Speaker 3 (01:35:47):
Now. Also after Infinite Crisis, DC Comas skipped all their
comic books ahead one year later. This is a one
year later storyline called fifty two Now. DC also published
a bunch of mini series that told what happened in
some of the other stuff. One of these miniseries is
the miniseries called Ion Now. In this this is a
(01:36:08):
Kyle Rayner series. Ion is actually the embodiment of Will.
Like it is a spiritual creature that represents Will in
the universe like Parallax represents Fear. Now. Ion bonded with
Kyle Rayner during this mini series, and this led Kyle
to have the ability to travel the new and recently
(01:36:29):
created New DC Multiverse of the fifty two universe.
Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
Oll, look, isn't that convenient?
Speaker 3 (01:36:34):
Yes? Held, he interacted with characters and several heroes from
the Tangent Universe, including the Tangent Green Lantern. Now you
might be wondering, how does Guy fit into this? I'm
getting there, But first, Ashley, do you know what the
DC Tangent universe is?
Speaker 5 (01:36:53):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
Boy, I know that you have two copies of the book.
Speaker 3 (01:36:56):
I have every trade they've ever made at the Tangent Universe.
Speaker 2 (01:36:59):
I don't I've not read them.
Speaker 3 (01:37:02):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (01:37:03):
Is Iron Lantern?
Speaker 3 (01:37:05):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:37:05):
Okay? Then no, I don't know that's a Malcolm.
Speaker 3 (01:37:07):
In the nineties, DC used to publish one shots during
their fifth week. Actually, as a person who worked in
a Comico shop, can you explain to our listeners what
a fifth week is in case they don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:37:19):
Yes. So, typically a month has four weeks. When there
is a fifth week, that means there is a fifth Wednesday.
New comic books, if you aren't familiar, come out on Wednesday.
New pros books come out on Tuesday. New movies come
out on Friday. So if there is a fifth week,
typically books come out the same week every month, So
Spider Man always comes out the first week. Batman always
(01:37:39):
comes out the second week, Jupiter Jet always comes out
the third week. Things like that. They don't tend to
move them around too much in scheduling, So that means
the when a fifth week crops up maybe three times
two times a year.
Speaker 3 (01:37:50):
That's like four times a year, I think, isn't.
Speaker 2 (01:37:51):
It In an a leap year, there's usually four. Yeah,
but it's usually closer to three. It just depends on
the year. Time is weird kids fifth week there's typically
nothing scheduled, so you'll see a lot of things like
annuals or a lot of collections. Fifth weeks are weird.
So actually in the nineties, in the early odds, publishers
made a considered effort to have cool stuff to come
(01:38:12):
out on fifth weeks because fifth weeks can.
Speaker 3 (01:38:14):
Sometimes bothe The amalgam events happened.
Speaker 2 (01:38:16):
Yes, can sometimes feel like throwaway. They can kind of
feel like that they have become a matter. Yeah, And
it was cool when they matter or where then there
was the potential that something cool we come out. So
apparently Tangent was a pisoz.
Speaker 3 (01:38:28):
So Tangent is one of the fifth week nineties events,
And Tangent actually was two of them. It was in
ninety seven and ninety eight, the first time it appeared.
This was where they gave Dan Jurgens, luminary creator, the
ability to take the names of the DC universe's characters
and do whatever he wanted with them. So he made
(01:38:48):
night Wing Oh yes, a like sixties spy organization. The
Atom became the most powerful hero in this universe. The
Green Lantern became like a horror book with this woman
who would carry around this green lantern and bring dead
people to life. Now, what does this have to do
with Guy. See, Kyle visited the Tangent universe and he
(01:39:11):
actually battled the Tangent Green Lantern and he kept the
Tangent Green lanterns power battery, the actual Tangent Green Lantern, okay,
And when he brought it back to the DC Universe,
he knew it was a super powerful object and he
left it to one person that he could trust, Guy Gardner.
So Guy Gardner, in his apartment on Oa has the
(01:39:32):
Tangent Green Lantern.
Speaker 2 (01:39:34):
Can I ask you a question and if you don't know,
it's okay, that's fine. Are the Tangent characters do they
live on their own earth in the multiverse. Yes, okay,
that's what I thought.
Speaker 3 (01:39:43):
Yes they do. I don't remember what that's okay.
Speaker 2 (01:39:46):
I remember when they the Multiversity came out, that great
series about the multiverse that Jason loves, written by Grant Morrison,
that there was like a guidebook that came along with
it and kind of showed who lived on what Earth.
Because one of them is all Faucet comics and that's
all Captain Marvel. Because I remember you point out the
(01:40:07):
Earth nine, thank you, Oh, which is Earth nine, which
in the TV continuity is where the DC Universe shows
lived Titans and do sual swamp thing. Great, thank you
for letting me uh derail you because I remember you
describing the female green lantern.
Speaker 3 (01:40:23):
I look like I will say this. The Tangent books
aren't They aren't amazing, but like.
Speaker 2 (01:40:28):
They have I love the ideas.
Speaker 3 (01:40:29):
Yeah, they have a lot of cool ideas. I love
the idea like in their in their universe, the Cuban
Missile Crisis in nineteen sixty three happened and Russia bombed Florida,
so like Florida is a nuclear wasteland and that is
effective American history going forward. And actually that is the
event that creates all the superheroes in the Tangent universe.
Speaker 2 (01:40:51):
Oh that's kind of cool. I like an alternate history
take on that.
Speaker 3 (01:40:53):
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so it's kind of cool. So soon
after this, guys reunited with a resurrected and although he
gets back together with her, he abandons her to go
fully serve the Green Lanterns and open a bar on Oa.
Speaker 2 (01:41:08):
I kind of like the idea that he's a bar owner.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
That fits for me. Then Blackest Night happens. This is
the event where all the Black Lanterns, there's Black Rings
all across the universe and brings all the dead heroes
back to life. And don't forget, guys, we were doing
black as a nightclub over on Patreon if you want
to go check that out. Guy and Kyle Rayner are
opposed to the Guardian's decision to execute all Sinstral Core
(01:41:33):
members in their prison cells, and they unsuccessfully convince the
Alpha Lanterns and the Guardians to stay away from this path,
and they're actually because of this, they are reassigned to Earth.
They later try to return to Oa and fail to
repel an invasion of a swarm of Black Rings, which
leads to Oa's Lantern crypt, where all the corpses of
(01:41:53):
fallen lanterns are reanimated as black lanterns. In the ensuing conflict,
Guy is forced to crush the body of the sectoid Bizd,
which is a green lantern, and then is impaled through
the leg by other dead green lantern Kihan. But following
the death of Kyle Rayner spoilers now my Baby, Guy
flies into a rage and is transformed and given a
(01:42:16):
red lantern. He is now powered by both his green
and red power rings at the same time, and Guy
seeks vengeance against the black lanterns were killing his pal Kyle,
and he's able to actually destroy them very easily because
he has two different light sources. He later turns his
murder's rage on his former friends before Mogo purgased the
Red lantern rage from him, and then he is told
(01:42:38):
only the blue lantern can cure him completely, and eventually
he is led into confronting the Necron the final Black
Lantern battle on Earth. So cool, yes, Now, some of
this gets swept under the rug when the New fifty
two sweeps into town and retcon's Guy to being the
middle child of a family from Baltimore and all all
of his family basically served his police office now, so
(01:43:00):
he follows in their footsteps. In this continuity, he's the
second human to be chosen by a Green Lantern Ring,
and this was prompted by now Guy rescues his older brother,
who is now named Gerard, from a police shootout, and
also in this relationship as retcon is, he actually still
talks to his dad, who is now named Ebenezer.
Speaker 2 (01:43:21):
Is son of Roland and his took.
Speaker 3 (01:43:23):
A bullet and now the job he was forced to retire.
So actually, just real quick, very briefly, what is the
New fifty two Barry Allen missus mommy? So he ran
back in time and reset the universe after Flashpoint and
everyone had only been superheroes for five years except the
ones Jeff Johns was writing and Batman and everyone got
more lines on their costumes. Yeah no. In the New
fifty two, Guy basically becomes a Red Lantern full time.
(01:43:45):
Initially a guy appeared to be the one Earth Greenlander
that the Guardians still replied on, but having expelled how
out of the Greenlanding Corps after the War of Green
Lanterns event and expelling Kyle for working with other Color
Ring Wielders, and the they expelled John Stewart for being
put on trial for killing another Lantern. So Guy was
(01:44:06):
actually placed into the cast of the Red Lantern series,
where he was sent there by Hal Jordan to join
the Red Lanterns under cover. He defeats Atrocitus, who is
the leader of the Red Lanterns, and takes command of
that group. It is revealed that part of his decision
to join the Red Lanterns is feeling as if he
never really fit in as a Green Lantern because of
his rage, and as a Red Lantern. Gardener manages to
(01:44:28):
keep his rage in check, successfully leading most of the
Red Lanterns and Atrocitus leads a splinter Red Lantern group
which allows new Red Rings to cause murderous justice page
while murderous justice based rampages continue. After joining with the
Green Lanterns to defeat the cosmic terrorist Relic, Hal promises
to give the Red Lanterns a sector for their own
(01:44:50):
to watch over, and unwittingly they kind of trick him
into making that sector two eight one four, which is
where Arthur's at. So Guy Gardner and the Red Lanterns
are in charge of guarding Earth for a while and
then d C Rebirth swoops in, which is this you know,
basically this soft reboot of the DC universally West comes back. Yeah,
well it West comes back to light. It changes Guy's
backstory again, bringing back the abuse from his alcoholic father
(01:45:14):
and their fights draw the attention of the sinastro core
and actually, fun fact, his dad's name has changed back
to Roland during the DC Rebirth. And that's where we're
going to end this lesson, because there's two things to
learn about. It's that Guy Gardner is the owner of
an abusive father and grievous head wounds.
Speaker 2 (01:45:33):
I keep thinking of the clip from Aladdin where the
Genie is trying to save a Lottin from evil Jaafar,
because Aladdin has said some quip and he's like, oh,
he doesn't know what he's talking about. He said one
too many hits with the snake. Oh yeah, I just
keep thinking about that every time Guy gets hit in
the head again.
Speaker 3 (01:45:49):
Nice. All right, let's go in the recommended reading, Ashley.
Speaker 2 (01:45:51):
The recommended reading is where if you have enjoyed our
humorous take on Guy Gardner and you were interested in
this weird character and you want to know some more
about it, you head on over to Geekhistory lesson dot
com slash recommended reading Rester Jason is going to recommend
some supplementary material for you to pick up. You click
on the widget, Amazon brings it to your house for free,
and a little bit of support comes back to the
(01:46:12):
Mine University at no extra cost to you, so we
can start building our own Red Lantern Core here on campus.
Speaker 3 (01:46:18):
Look, none of these are going to be the Guy
Gardner solo series. One because it's not great, two because
it hasn't really been collected either. Fair fair fair, fair,
fair fair. The first choice is Green Lantern Core recharges
the series right after Green Lanter Rebirth. This is where
Guy end series is where Guy, Kyle and John are
teamed up and they're training lanterns and it's cool. My
second choice is Red Lanterns Volume four, Blood Brothers. This
(01:46:39):
is where Guy takes charge of the Red Lanterns. And
also this is where Guy changes his look for the
first time in years as writer Charles Soul gives him
a fu Man chew.
Speaker 2 (01:46:51):
Yeah, and he gives my haircut too.
Speaker 3 (01:46:53):
He loses the bull cut. And my third choice is
a collection of Justice League International Volume one. They have
a trade of this. It's like the first ten issues.
It's really really worth reading. All Right, Ashley, gonna go
into the discussion. We're ready to discuss stuff. Yeah, what
purpose do you think Guy serves in the green lantern
(01:47:13):
core green lantern mythos because he's a character they keep
bringing back, and they've even ret condom into original green
lantern history. I mean, what do you think from this lesson? Like,
because I didn't like Guy when I first met him,
but I now have a strong appreciation for him.
Speaker 2 (01:47:30):
So I meshed the top and I did it with
what I hoped was humor that I don't care for Guy,
but I really think, especially if you just condense the
green lanterns down to the human green lanterns. Yep, even
though there are too many green lanterns, because now there's eight,
there's way too many green lanterns. What I think is
(01:47:52):
genius is if you look at all of them, and
you look at them through the lens of will, which
you must, because a green lantern is known and driven
by their will. They show the different ways that will
can personify in a person, and Guy, to me, represents
the anger driven will. So this is a real fantasy trope,
(01:48:16):
and it's a real ya trope that a character has
had a tough upbringing and they said, I don't feel anything.
I'm just angry because I know what rages and rage
drives me. And that's what Guy is. Guy is all
hard edges, he's all machiesbo he's all big talk and
hard fists. But it's because with that artifice he's been
(01:48:37):
able to muscle his way through these tough things in
his life. So I think Guy is a representation of
will through the lens of a cactus. Okay, Like he's
spiky and mean on the outside, but he has a
good heart and he's always trying. He's honestly trying his best.
He's just not good at it. Like Guy Gardner might
(01:48:57):
objectively be a better person than Hal Jordan. You know
how Jordan like takes cheats on his buddies girls while
they're in a tough jam instead of going to save them,
you know, he went to jail. Like Guy is trying
to do good, but he's just not great at it.
And I think that's what he adds. And I think
because the green lanterns, in some ways are held up
(01:49:21):
in a deified position, particularly when you Guy said, Kyle,
who's my favorite Green Lanterns? But Guy kind of grounds
them and brings them back to Earth. And I think
when he's employed, well, I think the best Guy Gardner
is in the Bajaja Justice League, and I think it's
in Green Lantern the animated series. Yes, because they use
him as a punchline and in the context of that show,
(01:49:42):
and they pair him up with Chip. It really works.
And that's what I think he adds to the mythos.
And then also, if you're looking at it, you want
to go to the editor brain and the publisher brain.
From a sales point of view, he brings in the
same group of people who love Lobo and who love Venom.
He is appealing to a very specific demographic. Yes, any
other thoughts about sort of his.
Speaker 3 (01:50:01):
No, he's the Drill Sartan. Yeah, that's exactly who he is.
He's the Drill Sartan Greenlander. That's exactly who he is.
Speaker 2 (01:50:07):
Great.
Speaker 3 (01:50:07):
Yeah, all right, now to the Teaching.
Speaker 2 (01:50:09):

Speaker 3 (01:50:18):
I'm so proud Guy Gardner. He's the s h asterix

The crossover so, far AND i actually thought he was so.
Amazing he was like so much better THAN i expected
that character to.
Speaker 3 (01:59:03):
Be all, right, well well we'll talk more about it
at the. End let's jump right into the first part
of this geek. History lesson On. Hawkmack what's the first
part of our geek? Hisstory?
Speaker 2 (01:59:14):
Lesson, oh it's a ten cent. Origin we're we're actually
can pick up a. Segway we tell you all the
Basic let's relax a little, bit and let's have you
say that.
Speaker 3 (01:59:24):
Again so he's had a professional it's the.
Speaker 2 (01:59:26):
Welcome to the ten sent origin where we give you
all the basic, factoids creators and aliases for the person
we're going to talk about.
Speaker 3 (01:59:32):
Today there you, Go there you. Go thank you so,
much says all. Right that's how radio works or podcast, works.
Folks hawkman's first appearance was In Flash comics number one
In january of nineteen.
Speaker 2 (01:59:44):
Forty, oh so the cw aped that correctly by having
him appear On.
Speaker 3 (01:59:47):
Flash, yeah that's. Cool he was created By Gardner, fox
who was the, writer And dennis Nebll on the art
fun fact Creator dennis Neble model Modeled hawkman's costume on
The hawkman characters in The Flash gordon comic By Alex.
Raymond oh my, god that's so.
Speaker 2 (02:00:03):
Funny.
Speaker 3 (02:00:03):
Yep So hawkman is a copyright In fringeman character right
out of the Bat. Woo his real names have Been Carter,
Hall Qatar, hole and there have been many Other, hawkmen
but we're mainly going to focus on these two. Guys oh, yeah.
Yep now we're going to move into meet, Cute, ashley
what's the meat cute section of our?
Speaker 2 (02:00:24):
Podcast, well the meat cute section of the podcast is
where we take a phrase from romantic comedy story writing
and tell you where we first met the character.
Speaker 3 (02:00:30):
And how cute it, Was, Ashley how cute was it
when you first Met hawkman or any of the Hawk?
Men where did you Meet hawkman The Justice league? Cartoon?
Oh when he did the storyline where he tried to Invade?
Speaker 2 (02:00:42):
Earth, yeah because now that wasn't.
Speaker 3 (02:00:45):
Really Hawk, man although they were alluding to it because
the real Hawk maman should have. Later, right that's, true
but it's already.
Speaker 2 (02:00:52):
Confusing it's already, confusing As i've said many times. Before
but in case this is your first, podcast a lot
of my early comic book reading was kind Of batman,
based and SO i didn't get to learn about a
lot of the EXTENDED dc universe until that cartoon came
along And Hawk, girl who will talk about at another.
Time Hawk girl features very prominently in that, show AND
i really like great. CHARACTER i think she's the best
(02:01:14):
on that. SHOW i think that's the best version Of
Hawk girl is in that. CARTOON i, Agree and THEN
i asked. SOMEONE i talked to someone at school about,
it and they were, like there's a Hawk man AND
i was, like, no, no, no, no, no It's Hawk.
Speaker 3 (02:01:26):
Girl no, no, no, no no. No the girl came. First, okay, OKAY.
Speaker 2 (02:01:29):
I know about science and. Biology i'm. Nine the girl came,
first and then and then he eventually showed up on that, show.
Speaker 3 (02:01:35):
The girl birth the.
Speaker 2 (02:01:36):
Hawk oh, man if only? DO i just hope that
that's what we have to look forward to you when
one comes? Along where did?
Speaker 3 (02:01:45):
You?
Speaker 2 (02:01:45):
Uh where did you first Meet? Hawkman how cute was?
Speaker 3 (02:01:47):
IT i remember Meeting hawkman in uh there was This
Batman superman magazine that was at a grocery store ones
cool and in the, MAGAZINE i don't know EVEN i
was Call Batman. Superman but in the magazine they had
adventures like drawn in the animated. Style. Cool but in
the animated style they looked like their modern comic book.
(02:02:10):
Counterpart so the Animated superman had a mullet because nineties
had a mullet far and then they did A hawkman's,
storyline and That hawkman was like the black costume alien
version the quitar. Hole it's hol BUT i know it's
supposed to be. Haul, yeah BUT i want to say
whole every TIME i see, it just.
Speaker 2 (02:02:29):
So that people who are listening can understand the.
Speaker 3 (02:02:31):
Distinction AND i remember reading that storyline and being, Like,
oh he's got a cool. Costume that's a. Bit that's
that's about. It AND i didn't really pay attention to
them to him after that Until Wizard, magazine When Wizard
magazines started talking About Jeff jones is bringing Back hawkman
and oh my, god you gotta read.
Speaker 2 (02:02:45):
IT i remember when that.
Speaker 3 (02:02:46):
Happened, yeah, yeah when he brought him back A, jsa
which we will get. To so now let's move on
into the history one oh one. Section what's? That?
Speaker 2 (02:02:53):
Actually, yes it is the main meat of the, lesson
Where jason is going to teach you everything that he
managed to cobble together about Car Haul. Hawkman let me
just say one, thing, okay one, thing only.
Speaker 3 (02:03:06):
One get ready for the ret. Coons, BABY.
Speaker 2 (02:03:12):
I.
Speaker 3 (02:03:12):
CAN'T i do not think there is a more retcon
character in all of comic.
Speaker 2 (02:03:17):
Books and we've done lessons On Spider, man oh And
fantastic More oh my.
Speaker 3 (02:03:21):
God, okay now a lot of this is me summarizing
it just to make it make sense that we're gonna
do a lot of hop skips and jumps past. Time
this is the ability to make you understand as Much
hawkman history as we, can.
Speaker 2 (02:03:36):
And we're picking out the most important stuff, because as
we all, know especially in these old, characters there's a
lot of stuff that's pretty.
Speaker 3 (02:03:42):
Silly it doesn't, matter pretty. Silly, okay here we, go
hit me. Up so in The Golden, age here we.
Go in the days Of ancient you.
Speaker 2 (02:03:50):
Two that's way Pre Golden, Age.
Speaker 3 (02:03:53):
Prince kufu is engaged in a feud with his, rival
The egyptian priest Hot. Set the priest eventually captures Both
cufu and his Consort shaia and kills. Them oh millennia
later in nineteen forty exactly that that exact, Year cufu
is reincarnated As american Archaeologist Carter hall And shayera As
(02:04:15):
Sharera sanders has Hath set himself is reincarnated as a
scientist Named Anton, haster and upon finding the ancient knife
Hath set used to kill The, Hawkman hall regains his
memories of his past life and Recognizes haster as the
reincarnated evil.
Speaker 2 (02:04:34):
Priest side note already, confusing, yes second side, Note Prince
cufu historically is the one with the biggest pyramid In.
Egypt oh, really, YEAH i did not know. THAT i
did know. That fun back to.
Speaker 3 (02:04:46):
Everybody So carter also discovered the mysterious gravity flying inf metal,
too which is actually a heavy isotope of iron f
e six seven six if you want its exact chemical.
Composition oh. Wow he also turned this into a belt
and then put a bird helmet and wings, on which
actually is funny because the bird helmet and the wings
(02:05:07):
are actually completely useless because the belt made of intha
metal is actually what makes him.
Speaker 2 (02:05:11):
Fly, Right but the hawk motif is.
Speaker 3 (02:05:13):
Cool, yeah Hot, man ultimately Confronting hastor As hawkman After Anton.
Anton of, course is it gets all confuted cause of different.
Names anton Is hasstor's reincarnated, name, Right So anton Captures.
Shiera so this Made carter be Like i'm gonna put
on wings And God. Forest So carter Encounters shiera and
(02:05:39):
during this time he remembers, her and Following hastor's, defeat
the two begin a romance and she also remembers, him
and they remember all their past. Lives they remember all
the good Tent hawkman becomes a charter member of The
Justice society Of, america which is the nineteen Forties Golden
Aze Justice league, team and he takes the position of permanent.
Chairman following The flash And, GREENLAND i didn't know.
Speaker 2 (02:06:01):
THAT i didn't know that he let THE. Jsa that's so.
Speaker 3 (02:06:03):
COOL sharea, meanwhile adopts the identity Of Hawk girl and
fights Beside Carter hall throughout the nineteen. Forties. Yeah, Now interestingly,
Enough Carter hall is one of the FEW jsa members
that actually joins The United states military During World War.
Speaker 2 (02:06:18):
Two oh?
Speaker 3 (02:06:19):
Really in nineteen forty, Two carter lists in THE Us
Army Air.
Speaker 2 (02:06:23):
FORCE i was gonna, say does he join The Air
force as.
Speaker 3 (02:06:25):
An airman and serves as a pilot with The First Interceptor,
command WHICH i think is interesting because most of the other
heroes did not get. Involved hawkman IS jsa chairman in
nineteen fifty, one when the team is investigated by The
Joint Congressional Unamerican Activities committee based upon the McCarthy era.
Speaker 2 (02:06:43):
On American activity is a really funny sentence.
Speaker 3 (02:06:46):
In congress asked the members of THE jsa to reveal their,
Identities the heroes decline And hawkman and most of THE
jsa retire for the bulk of the nineteen. Fiftieses as
we've heard In Jay Gerrick The flash or previous episodes
of our.
Speaker 2 (02:06:58):
So many previous.
Speaker 3 (02:06:59):
Episodes of, course along with all the other, Superheroes Hawkman's
Golden age adventures came to an end when basically the
comic book industry was done with superheroes in the early nineteen.
Fifties that's so. Cute and his last appearance was An
All Star comics number fifty seven in nineteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (02:07:17):
One that was a great. LESSON i thought you did
a lot of really Good.
Speaker 3 (02:07:19):
Reasar that's speak history lesson On hawkman not as confusing
AS i made it to. See but, actually due to
THE dc, multiverse we will later see This hawkband On earth,
two which is cose THE gsa, characters where all THE
Dc Golden age CHARACTERS, Werei, yes, exactly but really. Quick,
Well i'm not going to touch them that, much BUT
(02:07:40):
i do want to tell you there is one significant
development On earth. Two Sharon Carter mary and they have
a son Named hector named Hawk. Baby, WELL i think
it's kind Of Hector.
Speaker 2 (02:07:52):
Hall, yeah, yeah, yeah you.
Speaker 3 (02:07:54):
Know so there you. Go but thankfully that is not
the end For hawkman BECAUSE dc Editor Julie schwortz wanted
to revive a bunch of, heroes And hawkman was saved from.
Speaker 2 (02:08:04):
Obscurity we talked About Julie schwartz in like EVERY Dc
silver And Gold age character lesson we.
Speaker 3 (02:08:11):
Do Julie schwartz is a big benefactor for why the
superheroes came.
Speaker 2 (02:08:16):
Back she, Is she is badass Most i'm pretty Certain
julie's a.
Speaker 3 (02:08:20):
Man oh my. Bad, sorry let's google that does the
big so we don't sound like completely. Years i'm pretty
Certain julie's a. Man BUT i appreciate your.
Speaker 2 (02:08:28):
Bravado i'm going gender noodrol in my titles of. People.
Speaker 3 (02:08:33):
Yes. Now following the success Of The Flash Barry, allen of,
Course hawkman was revived In The brave and The Bold
number thirty, four which was In march of nineteen sixty.
One he is a. Man but, Yes Julie swartz is
a man For. Julius but you know, AGAIN i, ADMIRE
i admire your. Enthusias i'm going for. It, yes Now
hawkman was, arrived AS i, said brave in The. Bold
(02:08:54):
but he's.
Speaker 2 (02:08:54):
Different wait what? Different he's? Different that cons? Different was this?
Speaker 3 (02:08:59):
Time he's an alien policeman Named Katar hall Or. Hole
that doesn't sound that. Different Qatar hall was a police
officer from the Planet, thanagar sent To earth to capture
the criminal Bith. Rock having been intrigued by the, planet
(02:09:19):
he returned To earth to study human police methods along
with his Wife. Shiira On, earth they adopted the secret
identity Of Carter, hall and he became the curator of
The Midway City.
Speaker 2 (02:09:30):
MUSEUM i see what you've done, There and as.
Speaker 3 (02:09:32):
The hero Of, hawkman he became a member of The
Justice league Of, america which Is superman And badman's. Team
but When thanagar became a military dictatorship and attempted to Invade,
earth The hall sided with their adoptive world and turned
against their own, people thwarting the invasion and destroying their
own starship in the, process effectively stranding themselves and making
(02:09:55):
them permanent residents Of.
Speaker 2 (02:09:56):
Earth So Julie schwartz was basically, like, hey you know,
who people like people Like. Superman Make hawkman more Like.
Speaker 3 (02:10:02):
SUPERMAN i think it was a sign of the times
because think about, it in the, forties pulp, heroes, archaeologists you,
know something like, that Like Doc. Savage, yes in the
fifties were all about, aliens very, true nuclear As. Yeah So,
JULIE i think saw the sign of the, Times, like
get rid of that old pulp. Stuff let's make an.
Speaker 2 (02:10:23):
Alien you're so, smart that's.
Speaker 3 (02:10:24):
Fascinating, WELL i Knew julie was a, man, right he
had one up on. Me so basically, Again hawkman is
now basically the, same except now he's an. Alien, yes and, this.
Speaker 2 (02:10:37):
At least for, me WHEN i think Of, hawkman.
Speaker 3 (02:10:39):
You think, ALIEN i think Of.
Speaker 2 (02:10:40):
Thanagar, okay.
Speaker 3 (02:10:41):
Okay. Interesting so of, course This, hawkman AS i, said
became a member of The Justice league Of, america where
he often verbally sparred with the liberal Hero Green. Arrow
that's right. Now in the nineteen, sixties it was revealed
that the Original hawkman lived on the parallel world Of earth,
too and That qatar lived On earth one and THE
(02:11:02):
jla and THE jsa had annual meetings throughout the nineteen
sixties and nineteen seventies which these Two hawkmen met and talked,
awesome so not confusing at, All.
Speaker 2 (02:11:13):
No and they always met up in the. Annuals it
was basically the only time the world's crossed over unless
there was like a major major.
Speaker 3 (02:11:18):
Crisis it was like everything's, giving is everything's? Gimming, yeah,
yeah because that's when you get. Together The Silver Age
Hawkman qatar had his own series for a few, years
but with declining, sales that eventually murdered with that of
The atom And adam And hawkman lasted for about another
year before the series was. Canceled SO i think That
i've never heard Of adam And. HAWKMAN i haven't, Either
SO i think that's kind of, fascinating especially since now
(02:11:40):
the two are partnered on Legs tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:11:42):
Tomorrow, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:11:45):
And then crisis On Infinite earth's, Happened ashley in three
sentence or, less please explain what happened On Chrystlin Infant
earth's for any new students that have never listened to
our podcast.
Speaker 2 (02:11:57):
Before there were too many. Earths. YEP dc only wanted One.
Earth then there was only One, earth.
Speaker 3 (02:12:04):
Yep and so to elaborate a little bit, more, basically
this giant creature named The Anti monitor ate the entire
universe because he was a. Baby, yeah he's a, baby
and he farted out one universe and that Was earth,
one and that was THE dc comics that we've been
reading since nineteen eighty.
Speaker 2 (02:12:18):
Five until fairly. Recently.
Speaker 3 (02:12:20):
Yep, Now Carter hall actually survived a few. Years qatar.
Survived excuse, me the pronunciations are. Hard it's, Okay qatar
survived a few years past this, Crisis, okay even WHEN
dc decided to Reboot hawkman again in a series Called Hawk, world.
Speaker 2 (02:12:41):
Which you can find in most quarterbinds across the.
Speaker 3 (02:12:44):
World so this means that a brand New Qatar Hole
hawkman just appeared On earth In Hawk world when there
was already Another Qutar Hall. Hawkman and In earth, Too
Carter hall Hawk man just recently hanging out post. Crisis
(02:13:06):
so now there are Three. HAWKMEN i have a, headache
and they're all Named.
Speaker 2 (02:13:10):
Carter and they're all they all Look i'm assuming they
probably all look kind of the. Same drawn by the same.
Artist it one looks a little bit, different but it's very.
Confusing but let me tell you about something that is
not about that is not very. Confusing, okay hit me.
UP i don't want to be confused.
Speaker 3 (02:13:23):
Anything something that's very, simple and that's The Jawin Comic.
Speaker 2 (02:13:26):
Drive, wait what's?
Speaker 4 (02:13:26):
That?
Speaker 3 (02:13:27):
Yeah, now the Joon Win Comic drive is this. THING
i used to be a soldier AND i used to
love get to get gift packages and stuff like. That
And i'm trying to send ten thousand comic books to
all the overseas troops. Overseas that's what they they're. OVERSEAS
i stress it twice By january. First Now i've been
doing this for a couple of. Weeks now it's really.
Cool we're now over seven thousand, comics which is really.
Great we need that is so many. Comics we need
(02:13:49):
three thousand. More so, like keep pushing guys and keep
sending your comic. Books it's always. Great if you want
to donate, comics you need to complete these two. Steps,
okay box and ship the comics to comics for soldiers
care Of John. Win Comic drive four seven eight Zero Springfield,
Drive Tara, Hot, indiana four seven eight zero three that
will be in the.
Speaker 2 (02:14:06):
Description it is also pinned to the top of our
website and Our. Facebook, yeah AND i think both of
our pages is.
Speaker 3 (02:14:12):
At the top of My twitter at join jwi In and,
also don't forget send a picture of your comics and
the number of books you're donated to The john And
Comic drive At. Gmail if you don't do, that we'll
have an inaccurate, count and we want to make sure
we get to ten.
Speaker 2 (02:14:23):
Thousands and the reason someone asked me in an email
recently why they needed to send a. Picture the reason
that we need to send a picture is because we
need to know that you've actually mailed. Them and that's
kind of the only way that we can do it
is if you just take a picture of it in the. Box,
otherwise you could tell Us i'm sending twenty comic, books
and THEN i would never.
Speaker 3 (02:14:40):
KNOW i could Be Lex luthor and just be, like,
Hey i'm going to send ten comic. Books but it's
like if you actually send a, picture like it's a
little bit of putting in the, effort so it's, like,
oh maybe they are actually sending those ten comic. Books,
okay we'll take their word for. It, yes you. Know
so that's a great. Thing go do. That help us
at ten thousand By january, FIRST i think we're going
to do. It how awesome would be if we hit twenty,
thousands that'd be. Amazing oh my, god it's so. Amazing so.
(02:15:01):
Good all, Right so let's go back to outer Space.
Speaker 2 (02:15:04):
Ooo out of. Space.
Speaker 3 (02:15:06):
So hawkworld was a limited series created By Tim truman
that eventually became an ongoing and the story Of hawkworld is.
This Qatar hall was a young police officer or a
wingman as they were called on the Planet. Thanagar and
he was the son that's begging to be a. Movie
and he was the son Of Parn, qatar who helped
found the Wingman Sure hall Or qatar was unhappy with
(02:15:30):
the injustices he saw In thanagarian culture and became a
drug addict like you, do, yep before being tricked by
his corrupt Superior Beth rock into killing his own. Father,
hey that's the NAME i. Know. Yep hall was sentenced
to a period of exile on The isle Of, chance
where he defeated his inner demons and overcame his addiction
(02:15:51):
before returning to society exposing bith and clearing his own.
Name Cool, Now qatar was reinstated into the, police And
hall was part partnered With Hiera, thall and the pair
were sent To earth as goodwill ambassadors following the failed
invasion Of earth in Which thanagar had. Participated operating out Of,
(02:16:11):
chicago they adopted the costume identities of the then vanished.
Heroes see so there's already Hawk hawkman And hawkwoman eventually
encountering the originals when they.
Speaker 2 (02:16:21):
REAPPEARED i think it's interesting that they went To chicago
because you, KNOW dc has a lot of fictional.
Speaker 3 (02:16:27):
Cities in The Way, cities The Hawkman. City, yeah but
you know in.
Speaker 2 (02:16:30):
This incarnation they're In.
Speaker 3 (02:16:32):
Chicago, yeah that's. True, WELL i think it Was Tim
truman's attempt to make it very. Realistic so they encountered
the Original, hawkman And qatar eventually learned that his father
had befriended the original Hawk. Hawks carter And Schiera hall
went On earth gathering intelligence decades, ago of, course and
then The wingman had been inspired by.
Speaker 6 (02:16:52):
Them.
Speaker 3 (02:16:53):
Ooh qatar also learned that he himself was a mixed.
Heritage his mother had been A cherokee woman Named naomi
with whom parent had fallen in love.
Speaker 2 (02:17:00):
With, okay just go with. It.
Speaker 3 (02:17:03):
Sure the primary themes That Timothy truman focused on in
the limited series were basically social inequality and Class, Okay
and actually in the, series after relocating the setting the
series From thanagar to the city Of, Chicago katar And
shiera were exposed this is an interesting. Part it's the
most interesting thing to know About. Hawkworld, Actually, okay they
were exposed to the founding documents of The United, states
such as The bill Of, rights The, constitution and The
(02:17:27):
american criminal justice. System, now neither character was familiar with
the concept of natural rights and found the contrast Between
america's founding principles and the reality of their pragmatic government. Perplexing,
Now katar was inspired by, this and he actually found
this new way of. Thinking he actually really liked, it
(02:17:48):
And shiera initially rejected them as unrealistic and. Unworkable, now
during the, series both characters eventually concluded that The United
states was also a hawk world and a predatory society
in which the powerful oppresses the.
Speaker 2 (02:18:06):
Week, wow that feels very, topical, Ye but.
Speaker 3 (02:18:11):
They actually came to the conclusion That american society had
more to offer in terms of long term hope for
social justice and through its embrace of the natural. Rights.
Speaker 2 (02:18:20):
Cool so they. Are that's very, interesting it's very.
Speaker 3 (02:18:24):
Heady that's what you need to get From. Hawkworld that's
the reason WHY i would, say, like that's if you
want to Read, hawkworld that's why you read. It, yeah
for that type of. Stuff but then Zero hour happened
actually in three sentences or. Less what is zero?
Speaker 2 (02:18:41):
HOUR i haven't read zero?
Speaker 3 (02:18:44):
Hour so we talked about it in a multiple.
Speaker 2 (02:18:47):
POIMES i, know and you always say, it And i'm,
Like i'm gonna remember that for next, time but THEN
i never.
Speaker 3 (02:18:51):
Do, okay your future homework actually is to remember what
zero hour, is because we've talked about, IT i think
on like ten. Podcasts. Yeah Zero hour is a nineteen
Nineties Dam jurgen's event in Which parallax was, like oh,
Yeah i'm so mad that Co city has. Exploded i'm
going to remake the whole universe and then Co city
will be.
Speaker 2 (02:19:08):
Back, OKAY i GET i get zero hour confused with infinite.
Speaker 3 (02:19:12):
Crisis, yeah there's about twenty years a different.
Speaker 2 (02:19:14):
AND i know AND i know they're years, old AND
i know that they're totally, different but Because i've never
read either of, Them i'm always like which is the.
Speaker 3 (02:19:19):
One With Wonder. Woman so basically it's all the heroes
fighting parallax and like time is being. Resetting it was
it was kind of a soft continuity reboot FOR. Dc
so but this is where it's going to get really.
Confusing wait, yep, wait A Fanagarian Hawk god sure said
to hell with it and Merged Carter Hall Golden Age
(02:19:43):
hawkman And Qatar Hall Hawk World hawkman into one. Bean wait, wait,
wait just go with. It wait a bean that kind
of a bean that kind of Remembered Card hall's, life
kind of Remember Qatar hall's, life but had, definite real
organic wings that could somehow be retracted into his back to.
Speaker 2 (02:20:04):
What, shockingly.
Speaker 3 (02:20:07):
Here's the. Thing having a character that was part human
that was also a reincarnation of The Egyptian prince and
also the result of a human mating with a hawk
themed alien being the avatar of a hawk deity was
not as simple of a character AS Dc comics had
hoped That.
Speaker 2 (02:20:25):
This photo, right it sounds like SOME d AND d.
Speaker 3 (02:20:27):
Nonsense so this character was quickly killed. Off they're just, like, nope,
no we made a.
Speaker 2 (02:20:35):
Mistake we made a.
Speaker 3 (02:20:36):
Mistake and this is generally the period of time where
people Consider hawkman's period history to be so. Confusing AND
dc basically Took hawkman off the. Board, Wow i'm told
all writers you cannot Use. Hawkman.
Speaker 2 (02:20:52):
WOW i, MEAN i don't know how many people were
clamoring to Use. Hawkman actually, interesting.
Speaker 3 (02:20:56):
There was a very very, POWERFUL i think great writer
who wanted to Use, hawkman AND dc said no to.
WHO dc refused to Let Grant morrison Use hawkman in
HIS jla.
Speaker 2 (02:21:13):
Run that's a great.
Speaker 3 (02:21:14):
Run it is the Best justice Of america. Run now
this is a couple of years after. That But Grant
morrison wanted to Use, hawkman and that is the reason
Why Grant morrison created the character of the winged Angel
zaiel and made him part of the.
Speaker 2 (02:21:28):
Team oh so he's, LIKE i can't HAVE i can't Have.
Hawkman i'll make an. Analogue there you.
Speaker 3 (02:21:32):
Go and so in The Wizard, special in A WIZARD jla,
Special morrison made an appeal to the fan base And morrison,
said AND i quote And i'm handing it over To
ashley so that she can read. It in The Grant
morrison out.
Speaker 2 (02:21:45):
Accent i'm gonna vamp first Sec, Okay morrison made an
appeal to the fan. Base it's a good name and
it seems a shame to let it go to. Waste
we're hoping that fans will figure For god's, sake let's
just call him home and get him into The Justice
league As, hulkman and editors will relent with hoping to
start a.
Speaker 3 (02:22:05):
Campaign, YEP i had THAT jla. Special do you still Have,
NO i don't THINK i still have, it BUT i
had the poster that was in. It it was. Great
it was it was actually published like During JLA's like tenth.
Issue is really cool and and and he did a
breakdown with the characters and that and, that and he
did a breakdown Of zoreol and basically that's where he
said that where he was, LIKE i want to call
(02:22:26):
this Guy. HAWKMAN i wanted to Be, hawkman but they
won't let me Use. Hawkman So Little jason wrote a
letter to D C. COMIC i actually have never read
in a letter to D c COM i never did
that BECAUSE i never thought my letter would ever be. Published,
interesting SO i should, have BUT i never. DID i, Know,
WOW i never know and then we're gonna skip. Along
because D c held firm and The hawkman name went
(02:22:49):
unused for several.
Speaker 2 (02:22:50):
Years they were like, No Gret, Morrison, No and.
Speaker 3 (02:22:53):
Then came Along Jeff. Johns, now most Of Carter hall's
Most hawkworld history is fleshed out in the pages of
d C'S jsa And Hawkman volume. Four, now these titles
were all written by a bunch of different. Writers DAVID. S,
Goyer Jeff john's And James robinson all huge names, now
(02:23:16):
and they basically Retconned hawkman back into THE dc. Universe
and here's how they did. It, okay according to the
Post hawkworld. Origin, Now Prince kufu remember, Him, yeah he
lived during the reign Of ramses the second in the
nineteenth dynasty Of Ancient. EGYPT i think that's more or less. Accurate,
Now cufu believes that his soul or his car will
(02:23:37):
not journey on to the land of the. Afterlife, rather
his soul and that of his Betrothed shaira are fated
to remain in the mortal. World interesting as prophesied by
the Wizard. Naboo now do you know Who naboo?
Speaker 2 (02:23:51):
Is, actually HE'S i was gonna say Doctor, dub but
that's totally. Wrong He's Doctor.
Speaker 3 (02:23:55):
Fate he's the spirit that resides within the. Helmet yeah
of Doctor. Fate, yes as prophesized by the Wizard, NABOO
a spacecraft lands in Ancient. EGYPT i see what they're.
Doing Prance kufu And nabu and the champion Teth Adam,
ashley who's Teth? ADAM i don't. Know Teth adam is
the ancient egypt moniker Of Black, atom the Captain marvel.
Speaker 2 (02:24:17):
Villain, OH i legitimately didn't know that the rock.
Speaker 3 (02:24:20):
Will play in the upcoming Movieh, now these three search the,
desert finally coming across the remains of A thanagarian ship
with a hawklike, Motif naboo casts a spell translating the
strange language of the female space, traveler and just before,
dying she whispers the words inth, metal the name of
the substance that power the down. Ship Ted adam lifts
(02:24:41):
the lifts the ship back To cufu's, palace where it
is studied inside The temple Of, horus and the remaining
Inth metal is examined and its most obvious property to
These egyptians that oh it can make you fly right.
Sure the remaining sample from the ship is melted and
used to create several remarkable, devices including a scareb that
Allow cufu to, fly a deadly, knife and a battle
(02:25:02):
glove referred to as The claw Of Horus. Cool, however
the metal strengthens the souls Of cufu And, schera binding
them together and their love and imprinting them with all
the collective knowledge Of Thanagar. Cool although The villion this
priest Hath set murders the two with the, knife the
knife made of inf, metal and their souls live on
(02:25:23):
in the mortal, plane and they are reincarnated over many,
lifetimes always finding each other and always repeatedly being killed
at the hands of the reincarnated Hath. Set. Wow now
you can see where they made the. Changes AND i
think it's for, them AND i think it's for the. Better. Yeah,
Now cufu's soul is reincarnated countless times in different. Areas
(02:25:44):
and these are some of the reincarnated identities that have
been depicted In hawkman volume. Four, okay these Include they're not.
Limited there's more than, this. Okay Brian, kent also known
as The Silent, night he was alive during the fifth
century Of, britain and The love Of Lady Celia penbrook
Aw Oh Cohen grod Von, grimm the son of a
blacksmith in the fourteenth century Of, Germany Captain John smith
(02:26:09):
of the sixteenth century And colony Of virginia Of pocahontas.
Fame Hannibal hawks The, nighthawk a gunfighter in The American Old,
west And love Of cinnamon And Detective James, wright A
pinkerton detective in the earliest twentieth. Century and love Of Sheila.
Speaker 2 (02:26:26):
Carr pinkerton's the First american private.
Speaker 3 (02:26:28):
Detectives The detectives of The. Railroads, yeah eventually the soul
Of Prince kufu is reborn As Carter, hall an archaeologists
active during the nineteen. Forties, hey so.
Speaker 2 (02:26:40):
We're doing exactly what happened the first time.
Speaker 3 (02:26:41):
Around and now we're back to modern superhero Heroin and
that's Where carter in this retcon disappears because Of Zero,
hour Because Zero hour sends all THE jsa people off
to this weird limbo and stuff like. That, now years years, later,
OKAY jsa Member Kendra Saunders Hawk girl is transported to
a Ravaged thanagar by The High. Priests now they were
(02:27:07):
seeking a champion to stop the evil Animar sin from
enslaving the, planet and the priest us kendra centuries old
connection To carter to bring him back to the mortal, plane.
Speaker 2 (02:27:19):
Right because a girl can't pay your, champion that's.
Speaker 3 (02:27:21):
True where they will they will him back to to.
Life following, this under The orthodox, Resurrection hall retains all
the memories of his past, lives as well As Carter
hall The Thanagarian. Hawkman, However kendra has no interest in
renewing the relationship due to the lack of memories of
their past time. Ago she has no, memories so she's,
(02:27:41):
LIKE i don't know who you. ARE i don't want
to kiss your, face which is kind of what they're
doing In landen tomorrow right. Now, yes and then they
adventure on with THE jsa for a, while and Then
Blackest day happens and they die in the beginning Of Blackest,
day they, do and then at the end they're resurrected
at the the end of The Blackest day by The White.
Lantern and then the final battle when they're resurrected by
(02:28:01):
The White, Light kendra is revealed and says that her
name Is Shiera hall and she was and she remembers
all her past lives and she And carter joyfully. Reunite
ah and then The new fifty two. Happens, ashley can
you briefly explain how we get to the new fifty?
Speaker 2 (02:28:18):
Two there are so many? Worlds, nope AND dc doesn't
want To, No Barry allen missus his. Mom so he
runs back in time really fast and saves. Her and
then when he runs back to the present, day everything is.
Speaker 3 (02:28:32):
Different he resets the entire.
Speaker 2 (02:28:33):
Time everyone has really overdesigned. Costume, yes and we're.
Speaker 3 (02:28:36):
Only five years. Different. Yeah and in The new fifty,
Two hawkman gets a redesign and his origin is different again.
Speaker 2 (02:28:43):
Yay and he is very very Like retcon.
Speaker 3 (02:28:46):
Eight, Sure i've lost, Cat i've lost count in the
multiverse he is so he is, spiky spiky. Armor it
looks so. Ninety it is just it's so. Overdesigned, anyways
it is revealed that the Current hawkman in The new
fifty two is Actually Qatar, hall With Carter hall being
his Assumed earth. Identity, now This Qatar hall is grease
stricken over the death Of, shaierai and he tries to
(02:29:09):
rid himself of His hawkman, attire although the inth metal
fuses to him And carter obtains the ability to store
His hawkman armor beeth beneath his skin and manifested whatever
he needs. It and then he joins the government team
of The Jail Justice league Of america to take down
the Normal Justice league that's full Of batman.
Speaker 2 (02:29:27):
Supersident that's, right that's.
Speaker 3 (02:29:28):
Right and he has some scenes With vibe and that's about.
It that's where that's where he is. Cool he's just
a super angry guy goes.
Speaker 2 (02:29:35):
Cool that's.
Speaker 3 (02:29:36):
Fun in live, action of, course that's it for the.
Comics but in live action he's been played By Michael
shanks On, Smallville Daniel, jackson, yeah From STARRY sg, one
who tried to do A batman voice and it didn't great.
Speaker 2 (02:29:46):
Work his costume looked really good in still photos when
he didn't he was and then Fal kenschel is now
playing him On lenons To, tomorrow Who jason awesomely got to.
Speaker 3 (02:29:57):
MEET i got to. Me he's a really nice. Guy
it's still a mystery how those wings come in and,
out but we're just gonna move off for that and that's.
It let's move on to recommended. Reading that's where we're
going to tell you some of the books you should. Read.
Cool AND i think there's only one volume Of hawkman
that you should, read and that Is Jeff JOHN'S Jsa.
Speaker 2 (02:30:16):
RUN i was going to say that as.
Speaker 3 (02:30:17):
Well, yep so you go Collect Jeff JOHN'S Jsa run.
Omnibus they're an omnibi now volume, One volume, two volume,
three and this Redcon hawkman is in. There it's the
best Hawk man's ever. Been it's the Best jasa has ever.
Speaker 2 (02:30:29):
Been, yeah go read it and go watch The Flash
Arrow crossover if you haven't seen it.
Speaker 3 (02:30:34):
Yet, well let's move into a tiny. Discussion AS i
asked in the, beginning like Falk, Henschel, yeah you said
you were very impressed by his. Performance WHY i was super.
Speaker 2 (02:30:41):
Impressed by his performance because for, me he doesn't really
look Like. Hawkman AND i mean he's very, short you can.
Speaker 3 (02:30:49):
Tell, Yeah and.
Speaker 2 (02:30:50):
We've discussed this, before and the look is definitely not.
Everything and Like i'm totally open to like gender bending
and race. BENDING i like Their hawkman and all. That
the costume looks, great but to, Me i'm just, like,
oh you're like a a short white, dude AND i
imagine you being kind of a, tall white or brown,
dude you, know.
Speaker 3 (02:31:05):
Oh white or brown.
Speaker 2 (02:31:06):
Dude you, know if they made if they made The
hawkman of THE tv show the way That Hawk girl
looks In Earth too in the comics because she's, Brown oh,
YEAH i would be. Totally because this was The. Egyptian,
yes SO i would. BE i would be okay with
that as a. Choice but so they made him a white,
dude and that's. Fine And hawkman's on a character THAT
(02:31:26):
i have like a lot of attachment. To SO i
thought that he a did a really great accent because
he's Not, american, true and he sounds kind of. General
he sounds slightly foreign on some of the, vowels.
Speaker 3 (02:31:37):
But as a Reincardiate, egyptian you would hope that it
was like slightly.
Speaker 2 (02:31:40):
FOREIGN i thought he had really great, presence especially standing
up next To steven and l because SEVEN mL has
really great, Presence like he enters a room and you
look at. Him AND i thought that he did a
great job of kind of pulling attention to. Himself he
doesn't say a, lot BUT i thought everything that he
said felt very impactful and very meaningful and He by
the end of that, EPISODE i wanted to see more of,
(02:32:01):
him which was honestly no offense to anyone who loves this,
character but just never SOMETHING i ever expected to feel About,
hawkman so which just happened to be a lot with
THESE dctv shows and The marvel, movies which is. Awesome so,
YEAH i was just, like by the end of, IT
i was, like oh My, god, like when Did hawkman
get this?
Speaker 3 (02:32:19):
GUY i, know you, KNOW i. Was ACTUALLY i was
having this conversation on The Clider aaro recap show That i'm.
ON i was saying that it's so weird to, think
how weird is? It a thing like WHEN i was
Watching arrow in season, ONE i would have never thought
that we would have a fourth season episode that would
open An Asian egypt and be about Hawk. Man how
crazy is?
Speaker 2 (02:32:38):
That, yeah it's.
Speaker 3 (02:32:39):
Awesome it's. Awesome we are in a golden age of. Geeks, yes,
yes all, right and now let's move on to the

Speaker 2 (02:36:35):
Supergirl, okay your ten cent. Origin On, Carrazael i'm Saying.
CARA a lot of people Say kara in the. Show they,
SAY i Think carra sounds slightly more, alien And i've never.
Speaker 3 (02:36:47):
Say kara in the.
Speaker 2 (02:36:47):
Pilot they do Say kara in the. Pilot excuse, me
but it's my lesson And i'm gonna say WHATEVER i.
Speaker 3 (02:36:52):
Want, hey alien tongues are open to, interpretations so so
there go with.
Speaker 2 (02:36:57):
It So carzarel aka Super girl is A.
Speaker 3 (02:37:00):
Supergirl supergirl is.
Speaker 2 (02:37:03):
Obviously A Dc comics. Character she is A kryptonian superhero
and the cousin of cal L Aka. Superman she was
created By Auto binder And Al, plastino who have two
of my favorite names of any comic. Creator that's pretty,
good and her first appearance was An Action comics number
two fifty, two published In may of nineteen fifty. Nine
her aliases include Flame, Bird Linda Lee, Danvers oh, Yeah,
(02:37:24):
flamer we'll talk About, Flamebird Claire, Connor Kara, Kent Linda.
Lang those are all of her, aliases a lot of alliterations,
there and her team affiliations have been The Teen, Titans
legion Of, Superheroes Justice, League Red Lantern, core and The
supermen Of america Well. Superman her abilities include superhuman, strength, speed,
(02:37:45):
hearing endurance and, stamina extra sensory and vision powers so
like THE I, beams flight and, vulnerability inventsd hand to hand,
combat genius level, intellect, multilingualism. ARTISTRY i don't know what that,
meant BUT i saw that on many of the, breakdowns
AND i was, like, cool artistreet whatever.
Speaker 3 (02:38:01):
She likes to Create, Ashley and.
Speaker 2 (02:38:03):
Yeah it's probably How Helen slater was moving her hands
when she flew sure and, uh correct my pronunciation Because
i'm going to say it. Wrong clercre The kryptonian martial
art k l u r k O r clur. Core
she can do. That that's a big.
Speaker 3 (02:38:21):
Thing i've actually never heard it said aloud me.
Speaker 2 (02:38:23):
Either i'm sure he said it, wrong and that's a
big thing When superman learns that martial art as. Well,
Yep and that is your Tentsent origin of cars are
lay the meat cute part of the.
Speaker 3 (02:38:35):
Podcast whereas where we tell you where we first encountered
the character in pop culture or our, lives mainly our, Lives,
ashley we're first encountered the character Of. Supergirl, well like.
Speaker 2 (02:38:46):
Many MANY dc characters in my, CHILDHOOD i first Met
supergirl In superman the animated Series Suberman.
Speaker 3 (02:38:53):
Suberman if you don't, know that's.
Speaker 2 (02:38:56):
The theme song from the, Cartoon, YEAH i think.
Speaker 3 (02:38:58):
It's walker Or Christopher, drake one of the, two Not Christop,
drake BUT i think It's Shirley, walker who is the
movie who made the theme, song and he talked about.
That John williams talked about that when he did the
theme Of superman for this ninety seventy eight. Movie it
was saying the name Of superman and it is if
you listen to, it and it's nice that The Shirley
walker theme, song WHICH i like as, well it is
(02:39:19):
if you listen to it Ages Superman. Superman it, does it.
Speaker 2 (02:39:24):
Does AND i happen to have access to all these,
episodes SO i watched it. Recently the first EPISODE i
ever saw with her in it is from the third,
season episode. Ten it's Called. Unity, okay it's really kind
of a lame episode one where the weird uh it's
a weird cult that comes to. Town because In, saville
that is a weird. Episode, yeah Because kara like puts
(02:39:45):
on her wag and goes To. Metropolis there's a batgirl
joke in this episode that she makes him on podcast
And i'm, like why did they know That Barbara gordon
is Bad? Girl they're friends and she fights this bad
guy called The reverend who brings this alien Called unity
in like a giant like preacher To smallville and then
possesses all the local.
Speaker 3 (02:40:03):
Folk the small fuck the local.
Speaker 2 (02:40:06):
Folk and that was the first Time i'd ever heard Of.
Supergirl and she's voiced By nicole tom and it's a
it's a silly, episode BUT i Think supergirl comes off
pretty well in it nice. Cool so where did you
first Meet? SUPERGIRL i Think.
Speaker 3 (02:40:19):
Supergirl is another character THAT i generally just knew, Existed
but my first recollection of her is actually in a
storyline Called World Without. Superman And World Without superman was like,
THIS i, believe a twelve part storyline where it happened
in The superman. Titles after the death Of. Superman they
had black covers and it Said world Without superman, top
(02:40:40):
and so She. Supergirl, well this wasn't quite The supergirl
that we're gonna talk, about but we'll get to that.
Later but The supergirl had to pick up the slack
Because superman's, dead and you found out she was later
Dating Lex Luthor, junior which is the whole. Thing but
that's WHERE i first encountered, her AND i liked, her
and she was part of WHAT i consider to be my,
(02:41:01):
favorite Uh superman, family the Ninety superman family with her
This Supergirl superboy. Steal Hey, crypto mm, hmm you Love?
CRYPTO i, do even though he's kind of, dumb BUT
i love. Him that's, Okay it's an idea that doesn't work,
anymore BUT i love it. COOL i love all The
superpats just for the. Ridiculousness it's kind of like the
(02:41:22):
multi Colored. BATMAN i love the Rainbow. Batman oh so
DO i love them so?
Speaker 2 (02:41:26):
Much all?
Speaker 3 (02:41:27):
Right next we move in do the history one on,
one the main section of the lesson Where professor actually
is going to pull back the curtains Of cryptone and
reveal the ancient alien.
Speaker 2 (02:41:36):
Secrets it's mostly like pulling back the curtains Of kansas
because she's not On krypton for.
Speaker 3 (02:41:40):
That pull back the curtains Of kansas and reveal the ancient,
hate the ancient farming secrets Of. Kansas, yes, exactly which
after this, podcast all of you, listening BECAUSE i come
from the state Of, Kansas you're all gonna have to.
Die i'm gonna have to kill you now because you,
know you know, farming you know our secret farming, secret
AND i cannot stand for.
Speaker 2 (02:42:01):
That, wow that's.
Speaker 3 (02:42:02):
Hardcore that's that's the truth Of, kansas The Sunflower. State, hello,
folks to the stars through. Struggle, yep here is your.
Speaker 2 (02:42:11):
History one on one Of. Supergirl carzrel is actually the
FOURTH Dc comics character to bear the Name supergirl Or. Superwoman.
Speaker 3 (02:42:20):
What, YEAH i have been lied to my entire. Life uh,
yeah pretty, much welcome to.
Speaker 2 (02:42:26):
It the first Female superman analog was Actually Lois lane
in An Action comics number, Sixty so a pretty early
adventure for, her and she was in a coma and
dreamed that she Was. Superwoman oh that's. Cool yeah yeah
SO i, yeah it's a really, silly Like Golden age.
Story BUT i love that the first female version Of
superman Was Lois. LANE i think there's something really special
(02:42:46):
about that's kind of.
Speaker 3 (02:42:47):
Poetic.
Speaker 2 (02:42:48):
Yeah the second Female superman analog was a character Named
Queen lucy Aka Lane, no, no, no just stick with
me okay Aka supergirl two words with a, dash where
A Supergirl kara is just one. Word she's The queen Of,
borgonia not a real, place who travels To smallville to
complete to compete in an athletics competition where she meets
(02:43:10):
a Young Clark Kent. Superboy she wears a tan dress
and a brown cape with AN s on. It, yeah
she has an likely it lasts one. Issue it's really
silly and a little bit.
Speaker 3 (02:43:21):
Xenophobic oh you mean it's anti? Aliens, Yes and.
Speaker 2 (02:43:25):
Then the Third supergirl Is Claire. Kent Claire kent Is
Clark kent turned into a female by an angry alien queen.
Speaker 3 (02:43:33):
Ah oh The Golden.
Speaker 2 (02:43:36):
Age so, Yeah and if you're looking for a timeline,
Reference Lois lane makes her, appearance and sixteen years later
we Get Carra. Zerral we Get supergirl as an original,
character not just as kind of this weird device in
a one. Shot so it takes sixteen years from when
the first idea is planted to get this little blonde
girl in a. Skirt they needed time to perfect the,
(02:43:56):
idea freaking guess, so So Action comics and two fifty
two finally comes. Around it tells the story Of kara's,
origin about her being sent To earth by her Parents
zarel And, alura crashing Into, kansas and being raised by
her Cousin. Superman that's something that will get retcon. Later
we'll talk about, it. Okay after her first, APPEARANCE Dc
Comics New york, office which was their only office at the,
(02:44:18):
time received tens of thousands of positive letters and reaction
To supergirl's. Debut really, yeah they people freaking loved. Her oh,
Awesome so you left that girl in the, dust and
the details Of car's origin from this, appearance you, know
build up the idea That she's from this place Called Argo.
City Argo city drifted away From krypton during the. Explosion
(02:44:38):
it's a stained in environment until the soil turned into,
kryptonite and in order to save car her parents sent
her after her cousin Cal.
Speaker 3 (02:44:44):
Oh it's.
Speaker 2 (02:44:45):
Nice so it's kind of the origin that we, know
and it will get, retconned but then it will come.
Speaker 3 (02:44:49):
Back. Yeah argos like always been like an important part Of.
Supergirl it's interesting Like. Candor, yeah well it's also interesting,
too AND i hope it doesn't spoil anything in the
future your. Lesson In superman the animated, series they had
her come From, argo And argo was a colony Of.
Krypton so, yes so that it was a, satellite so
That superman was still the last son Of, krypton and
she's like the last daughter Of.
Speaker 2 (02:45:09):
ARGO i actually don't mind that. IDEA i. DON'T i
think it makes them both a little more. Special she's
Still kryptonian, though, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah but that, way you,
know you get the, poem, yeah last, yeah. YEAH i
was actually wasn't gonna talk that much by the animate,
SERIOUS i thank you for, well there you. Go carra's
first secret identity was As Linda lee and she grows
up in The Midvale. Orphanage oh, Yeah, Midvale yeah, Yeah
(02:45:32):
midvale is a big thing For. Supergirl yeah. Yeah as a,
teenager she joins The league Of, superheroes just like her Cousin.
Superman DID i Mean? Legion, yeah you, Said, Oh i'm Sorry.
LEGION i Wrote league Of. SUPERHEROES i mean The legion
of SUPERHERO i mean like The league Of. Nations it's
like that with, superheroes and they talk a lot of bullet.
Speaker 3 (02:45:48):
Is supergirl in The legion Of superheroes is very much
to me Like superboy And Legion. Superheroes there's just something
that's right about.
Speaker 2 (02:45:56):
That there, is and it is something that will be
ret conned out of her continentuity and brought back later.
On we're going to talk about it more in just
a little. Bit all you need to know is that
basically the way That supergirl was in The golden and
The Silver age is that Did superman do? It she's
going to do it, Too, Okay AND.
Speaker 3 (02:46:14):
I think real, quick we should stay since this is
a just Like Jake, gerrek this is a classic, character And,
supergirl more so than some of the OTHER dc, characters
is infinitely affected by, crisis, crisis. Crisis, yes SO i
assume that there's going to be there's so many, details
and this is your best chances of condensing that this
is the streamline version of, It so we leave something.
(02:46:35):
Out please be kind on the, internet, yes, yes.
Speaker 2 (02:46:38):
Please so for the next three, years while she is,
well she's At, Midvale kara Is superman's secret. Agent oh
He superman comes to her and like she knows that
he's her, cousin and he's not sure about, her so
he doesn't reveal his identity to, her even though he
knows that he knows her As, linda and.
Speaker 3 (02:46:58):
He makes her Drink martinez, exactly and he's, Like, okay
Well i'm going to test.
Speaker 2 (02:47:02):
You you're going to go, out you, know kind of
Like robin's first trial before he can Be.
Speaker 3 (02:47:05):
Robin it's so fascinating because they steal that in the
new fifty Two earth two.
Speaker 2 (02:47:11):
Series, well she finally meets him In Action comics number
two eighty five in nineteen sixty, two four years after
her first. Appearance, wow so it says it's Three so
she's there for a year without, him and Then superman
figures out about this girl with, abilities and he trains
over three years before he's, like psych my name Is Clark.
Kent i'm actually gonna raise. You it'll all be, okay
don't worry about.
Speaker 3 (02:47:31):
It it's all.
Speaker 2 (02:47:32):
Good so up to this, Point carr had been in
a sharing the starring role of action comics With Superman
cool before she moved over to take the lead in
a title Called Adventure comics towards the end of the nineteen.
Sixties oh, yes which is, why, yeah, Yeah i'll home
of Super boy in The.
Speaker 3 (02:47:47):
Legion.
Speaker 2 (02:47:47):
Yes, yes she basically took over when she joined The
legion because they grew Super boy. Up they weren't telling
those stories. Anymore so if you're ever looking for old
superhero superhero Stories supergirl, Stories Adventure comics is a great
place to. Look there's slightly more affordable than those old
action comics as. Well, okay ten comics are hard to
get your hands. On there are repeated story lines during
her early adventures Where kara is depowered so that she
(02:48:09):
can be menaced by human, foes falling into the same
kind of trap As Clark kent. Does somebody gets their
hands on, kryptonite or something happens with the sun and
so then she can just fight like a human. Character, yeah,
yeah it's. Not it's not the most creative storytelling, device
but it marked a lot of early, adventures so thought
it was worth bringing up.
Speaker 3 (02:48:28):
Understood, so after she leaves.
Speaker 2 (02:48:31):
Mid, Vale Linda danvers moved to Stan Hope college and
she takes on the Name. Danvers i'm going to talk
about this really briefly because she quote allows herself to
be adopted by some Nice kansas farm. Folks his last
name Is. Danvers so she goes from Being Linda lee
To Linda Lee. Danvers she's really not with them very,
(02:48:53):
long but she then so She's Linda. Danvers she moves
To San francisco to attend Stan. College not a real, College.
Speaker 3 (02:49:02):
Nope and neither is the town Of San.
Speaker 2 (02:49:04):
Francisco it's this magical gay place full of drag queens
and fish. Soup and her time In Stanhope, college this
is the first time we See streaky And. Comet streaky
the super cat And comet Super. Horse, yes becoming part so, Pets, yes,
yes and. THEY i don't Think commet lives in her,
(02:49:26):
apartment BUT i Know. STREAKY i don't know Where commet.
Speaker 3 (02:49:29):
Lives he lives in The.
Speaker 2 (02:49:30):
BARN i Think commet actually like lives in.
Speaker 3 (02:49:33):
Space, yeah probably he lives in The moon's on The.
Speaker 2 (02:49:36):
Moon streaky like lives in uh In carr's apartment with
her and then that's.
Speaker 3 (02:49:41):
On, no, no you get you get that. Wrong kara
lives In streak.
Speaker 2 (02:49:48):
And and the interesting thing About streaky is that we're
going to talk briefly About Power girl and her relation With.
Supergirl streaky or a version Of streaky or a white
cat appears in A man Of Connor's girl as.
Speaker 3 (02:50:00):
Well oh that's so. COOL i don't think she's Named
oh she's totally but She's.
Speaker 2 (02:50:05):
Streaky So STREAKY i like to think Of streaky is
a nice, lady a lady cat who goes between The
supergirls as they need.
Speaker 3 (02:50:12):
Her, WELL i, Mean streaky's, immortal.
Speaker 2 (02:50:15):
Right and can. Run i'm sure at super speeds it lights.
Me she can just fly to like Wherever Power. Girls
let me preserve that's going.
Speaker 3 (02:50:22):
On it's really cool and convenient That krypton has the
same animals as, us right, right.
Speaker 2 (02:50:28):
You don't have that weird bug creature For.
Speaker 3 (02:50:30):
Manisteel, yeah they don't have like the three armed gri
falter fish you know or, Whatever NO i said falter, FISHET.
Speaker 2 (02:50:38):
I guess so. So starting in nineteen sixty, Seven supergirl
and Back girl team up a lot In World's Finest.
Comic you can go back and listen to Our backgirl
episode for some more about that about The Barbara gordon.
Stuff and they're strong bond as friends and as compatriots
against crime unites them through many titles moving ahead and,
(02:50:59):
then because it's really devastatingly struck by a. Retcon in
nineteen seventy, One kara graduates from Stan Hope college AND
ny and she rejoins The legion of superhero as an adult,
person where she has a close relationship With brainiac. Five
can you really just quickly describe Ao brainiac five as
From brainiac.
Speaker 3 (02:51:18):
Five is a member Of legion Of. Superheroes he's The.
Sparta he's he's not the smartest, member but he's the smartest.
Member he's from a planet called khlu Or cola or
co L. U, Yes i'm gonna say Khlou. Khalua, yeah
he's a descendant of the Original superman Villain. Brainiac he's
a very member of thereen skin blonde.
Speaker 2 (02:51:39):
Hair, yeah and So car has a relationship with him
that breaks off because she has a relationship with a,
mermaid and then she has a relationship with a guy
she went to school. With it's really, silly all, right
BUT i kind of, like, LIKE i went AND i
read some of the issues some of the stories with
her And brainiac, five AND i actually think that they
kind of balance each other. Nicely And she's car is very,
(02:51:59):
strong and it's not that she's not, smart but she's
not a heady intellectual character like a lot of That
bat family, is And brainiac five. Is so her passion
and her physical strength stands up against his intellect in
a really really interesting. Way AND i kind of wish
they'd done more with.
Speaker 3 (02:52:13):
That got.
Speaker 2 (02:52:13):
It, Yeah so someday WHEN i Write, SUPERGIRL i will
bring that relationship. Back cool copyrightky Kiss.
Speaker 3 (02:52:18):
You depending on how The legion Of superheroes is an
in or out of, continuity Well i'll be wildly.
Speaker 2 (02:52:22):
FAMOUS i could do WHATEVER i want by. That John's
Got it in nineteen seventy. Two so the next, year
A supergirl gets her own series, again but.
Speaker 3 (02:52:31):
It didn't Do was it Called supergirl by the, WAY
i just.
Speaker 2 (02:52:34):
Want to say it was Called. SUPERGIRL i do want
to say that one year After supergirl, existed she got
her first solo. Title Barbara gordon didn't get one until twenty.
Speaker 3 (02:52:42):
Eleven that's what happens when you have blown.
Speaker 2 (02:52:46):
HAIR i guess blonds have more.
Speaker 3 (02:52:48):
Fun And barbara didn't wear. Skirts she. Didn't, yep that's
why it. Was that's what it.
Speaker 2 (02:52:53):
Was you can see upper. Costume, yeah you can't see.
Speaker 3 (02:52:56):
Up her, Costume so, yeah you don't get a.
Speaker 2 (02:52:59):
Title so in nineteen seventy two we got the Second supergirl.
Series it didn't do very. Well, oh was eventually, canceled
but never fear Because kara moved over to a book
Called Superman.
Speaker 3 (02:53:10):
Family along With Lewis lane And Jimmy.
Speaker 2 (02:53:13):
Olsen.
Speaker 3 (02:53:13):
Yeah fun.
Speaker 2 (02:53:15):
Fact at that, time in the Non supergirl part Of kara's,
life Like Lewis, lane after she graduated from, university she
became a news camera woman for k SF. Tv really she,
yeah and then she became an on air, personality and
then she realized that people really liked looking at. Her
so other fun. Fact she eventually leaves television, news moves
To New York, city becomes a soap opera star in
(02:53:36):
a show Called secret, hearts which is something that's so,
fantastic that's awesome and is really. Downplayed but if you're,
like it's kind of Like, Superman like if you're this
hot alien, Person, like why wouldn't You they made, stargirls
they Made starfire a, Model uh, huh so why not
make her a soap opera. STAR i think that's really. Cool,
sure BUT i bet her shootings. Go she's got all these.
Speaker 3 (02:53:56):
Conflicts, yeah what happens if like somebody's dying in the
middle of a take that she just like zip off
and zip. Back she's not that. FAST i don't.
Speaker 2 (02:54:04):
Know she probably talks To superman through their watches or
something because it's the seventies and decides if she really
really needs to leave set or not.
Speaker 3 (02:54:10):
Listen she doesn't wear a. Watch Only jimmy wears a
watch through.
Speaker 2 (02:54:14):
Her necklace or. Whatever hot girls in the seventies wore
her skirt through her. Skirt she talks to The superman
through her skirt or headband or her. HEADMAN i don't
know if she's wearing a headband at this exact point in.
Speaker 3 (02:54:26):
Time you, know she was always wearing a. Headband she
just decided to wear in public in the.
Speaker 2 (02:54:30):
EIGHTIES i see after The Superman family title was. Canceled,
OH i, know The supergirl title returns and she spends
the rest of the seventies in the early eighties teaming
up With. Batgirl like we've talked, about and these are
the stories that will eventually be retconn too have Been
powergirl instead Of supergirl because of the ever changing timeline
of When kara actually came To, earth.
Speaker 3 (02:54:50):
And batgirl constantly complained, that, like, HEY i don't have
my own solo. Series what's going on?
Speaker 2 (02:54:55):
Here it's really just me complaining ABOUT i just think
because you, Know supergirl serves the same purpose in The
superman family that Bat girl. Served, sure SO i just
think it was interesting that they gave her a title
right off the bat and they give one to Back.
Girl it's.
Speaker 3 (02:55:10):
Interesting it's interesting because think about it this, way. Too
Bad girl is the second sidekick Of. Batman supergirl is
the first sidekick Of.
Speaker 2 (02:55:22):
Superman but he And lows were around Before kara.
Speaker 3 (02:55:24):
Was but here's the, Thing, ah but they're not sidekicks
though they're they're supporting. CHARACTERS i know that's a little
it's a little, weird but it's because they don't fight
crime even though they have their own. Books it's Weird
robin never got a solo title till the. NINETIES i,
know so like all the bad characters get. Screwed i'm
having solo Titles superman. Characters they're like throwing them. Out they're, Like,
(02:55:45):
perry what you want one streaky have.
Speaker 2 (02:55:47):
It it's True robin is good his own, series but
it's the book is Called batman And, robin and that's
where his adventures primarily take.
Speaker 3 (02:55:54):
PLACE i don't think it was Called batman And. Robin
i'm pretty certain it was only Called.
Speaker 2 (02:55:59):
Batman but there was A batman And robin title before
there was A robin. Title that's the argument That i'm.
Speaker 3 (02:56:03):
Making, uh we will, SEE i.
Speaker 2 (02:56:06):
THINK i think so, Okay But i'm gonna keep talking
About supergirl because during the early eighties we meet who
a lot of fans consider to Be kara's most iconic.
Villain who's someone WHO i had never heard. Of SO
i think it's interesting that the character is lauted as
being this very important character whose Name I'm i'm gonna
(02:56:29):
attempt to pronounce Is Nastel. Thea she's Nicknamed nasty and
she Is Lex, Looser Lex luthor's niece who Hates supergirl
and wants to take her. Down so we have this
Female Lex luthor familial equivalent Who kara faces really only
for a couple of, years but a lot of people
(02:56:49):
see as kind of being her arch. Nemesis so after
she's defeated, Nasty, yeah it's it's it's, so it's so
bad on on so many, levels and we're just gonna mention.
That and then now it's nineteen eighty, two just to
let you, KNOW i.
Speaker 3 (02:57:05):
DID i was googling. This the first series to be
Called batman And robin Was batman And, robin written By
Grant morrison After Batman. Reborn, really, yes that is the
first comic book to Have batman And robin.
Speaker 2 (02:57:19):
On, oh several detective comics Presents batman.
Speaker 3 (02:57:21):
Or batman, okay but Or World's finest Featuring, Superman batman
And robin The Boy. Wonder but there was a, serial
a movie serial Called batman And robin in nineteen forty. Seven,
well the movies beat the, comics.
Speaker 2 (02:57:37):
Right and we've only had one, Movie Barbara, gordon and
she was.
Speaker 3 (02:57:41):
Terrible, yep pretty.
Speaker 2 (02:57:42):
Bad so nineteen eighty Two kara gets a new title
called The Daring New adventures Of supergirl.
Speaker 3 (02:57:48):
Because a long.
Speaker 2 (02:57:49):
Title supergirl's not edgy enough for the nineteen Eighty.
Speaker 3 (02:57:52):
She's not daring. Enough Got I'm Julie schwartz and she's not.
Speaker 2 (02:57:56):
Daring Enough Julius schwartz where she's Super he moves To
chicago From San, francisco and it's drawn By carmine And,
fantino who people again may remember for THE bcrol episode
and being a prolific Dcpence. Lune this is also the
first time that she gets a costume, reboot but definitely
not the. Last it's not a huge. Change the. Headband
(02:58:16):
this is the, Headband oh, yes but it's still basically that, dress,
slash skirt and top get up because it's the same As.
Speaker 3 (02:58:23):
Superman it's such a classic, look don't screw with.
Speaker 2 (02:58:25):
It, well then the new fifty two, apps well we'll
get to. That so now we're going to talk about
a little known year of nineteen eighty.
Speaker 3 (02:58:32):
Five probably what some would consider to be the most
important year of comic.
Speaker 2 (02:58:38):
Books and there's a you, know a series that we've
talked about ad nauseum here Called, Clatchman Watchman supergirl shows
up With. Rorshack it's it's, cool, Dude it's. Weird actually
Called crisis On Infinite earth's can you Describe crisis On
infante there's in three sentences or last.
Speaker 3 (02:59:00):
There are too many parallel worlds in THE dc. MULTIVERSE
a character called The Anti monitor is a baby and
smashes the world. Together then there was just one world
because comic editors that people were getting confused by all the.
Earths thank, you Baby Anti. Monitor that was actually. Four
(02:59:25):
BUT i just go for.
Speaker 2 (02:59:26):
Me if somebody draws me a Baby Anti, Monitor i'd be.
Speaker 3 (02:59:29):
Cute right smashing the.
Speaker 2 (02:59:31):
WORLD i will send you a copy Of crisis On Infinite.
Earth oh will you?
Speaker 3 (02:59:35):
Will?
Speaker 2 (02:59:35):
Oh that is so draw the Baby Anti, monitor share.
Speaker 3 (02:59:39):
It On, facebook dot, com slash geek hisstory, lesson or
gee hisstory lesson dot, com or just tweeted at us At,
jowin AT. Ashleyv. Robbins the first person who does? It,
Man the first person that we see does a Baby
Anti monitor will be a that's a pretty good. Deal
yeah you think that's. Cool, basically there were so many
multiverses THE dc retcon their whole universe to be. One,
yes so No earth two nor. Three, No, no that
(02:59:59):
stuff just One.
Speaker 2 (03:00:00):
Earth and the most important thing About crisis On Infinite,
earth's apart from the fact that we're condensed in the universes,
down is That supergirl. Dies.
Speaker 3 (03:00:08):
Yes do you know? Why, no they Killed supergirl and
they killed the Super pets and they.
Speaker 2 (03:00:15):
Killed oh you mean the publishing reason Why, yeah, Yes
i'm gonna talk about.
Speaker 3 (03:00:18):
That, OH i will not ruin your.
Speaker 2 (03:00:19):
LESSON i thought you meant like, CONTEXTUALLY i just thought she.
Speaker 3 (03:00:22):
Died please do not put, me. PROFESSOR i was trying to.
Speaker 2 (03:00:25):
HELP i just have a really, great really, great a
really great quote THAT i want to, read and then
you can expand on. That sure another thing that she she.
Dies in issue, Six backer goes to eulogy and issue seven.
Speaker 3 (03:00:37):
The most famous comic covers of all, time starting.
Speaker 2 (03:00:39):
Yes when he is standing on the front and He's
i'm acting it out like everyone and he's.
Speaker 3 (03:00:43):
Crying and he's just like he's, Howling, yeah cowling because
her head band is.
Speaker 2 (03:00:47):
Dead, yes her band is. Dead he does take her
body back To New krypton to be laid to, rest
which is kind of.
Speaker 3 (03:00:52):
Nice nice.
Speaker 2 (03:00:52):
Clerk so they kill her despite the fact That supergirl
was one of their most popular characters at the, time
and her title was selling really, well And crisis On
Infinite EARTH'S i don't think we've set it up to this.
Point it was written By Marv wolfman and drawn By George.
Speaker 3 (03:01:07):
Perez i'm certain we've mentioned, it but it's always good
to re mention it because this could be somebody's first
geek history.
Speaker 2 (03:01:13):
Lists they're. Awesome and this is what series Writer Marve
wolfman had to say about killing Off. Supergirl sure Before,
crisis it seemed that half Of krypton had survived the.
Explosion we Had, Superman, Supergirl, crypto The Phantom, Zone, criminals
The Bottle city Of, candor and many. Others our goal
was to Make superman. Unique we went back to this
origin and make Cal al the only survivor Of. Krypton
(03:01:34):
that sadly was Why supergirl had to. Die, however we
were thrilled by all the letters we received saying That
supergirl's death In crisis was the best Best supergirl story
they had ever. Read thank, you by the. WAY i
Miss kara, too and SO i think from a publishing,
standpoint you can understand why they did. That even if
you're like but you're cutting off all these titles that
(03:01:54):
people are.
Speaker 3 (03:01:55):
BUYING i totally understand. It it is too. MUCH i
agree with. Them if you go back and look at
Like superman in the, Seventies, yeah there he's he's hitting
A kryptonian every day and he's stimily like there Are
kryptonians working at The Daily. Planet it's it's, insane it's weak.
Speaker 2 (03:02:10):
Writing it's that argument that the only the only way
to Make superman interesting is to bring In kryptonian villains
or to use, kryptonite and that's not. True, No and
this is the BEGINNING i think of people starting to
ask more in what you're going to do with These
kryptonian Character and.
Speaker 3 (03:02:24):
It sucks that she, died but her death and the
death Of Burry elm the Second flash the two best
moments Of christian of his nurse.
Speaker 2 (03:02:33):
Easily, Yes, yeah that's why this series is still worth
reading and worth fighting through for their deaths and understanding
that this is what sets the scene for every crisis
going for. YE i also think That Marv wolfman the
way he presented, this Because i'm sure that a lot
of the letters that he got were both, positive But
i'm sure he got a lot of negative fan.
Speaker 3 (03:02:51):
Mail i'm certain he got hate.
Speaker 2 (03:02:52):
Mail AND i think that this QUOTE i don't know
exactly when this quote was pulled, from, okay BUT i
think that it's a very, nice, collective well thought out
answer to, like why did you kill one of our favorite,
characters you, know making it seem. Justified So car is
dead and that kind of.
Speaker 3 (03:03:11):
Sucks oh, god but then the universes are dead as. Well, yeah,
yeah that, baby any, monitor he's the room.
Speaker 2 (03:03:18):
Gone SO dc had a vice president and executive editor
Named Dick giordano g G IO.
Speaker 3 (03:03:27):
R D.
Speaker 2 (03:03:28):
A giordano Y. Giordano, Sure i'm Not. Italian i'm, sorry and,
Uh i'll just call Him dick because we're. Friends, Hey. Dick,
So dick suggested that he was the one who actually
Told marv that they should kill Off, kara and he
said That supergirl was created initially to take advantage of
the High superman sales and not much thought was put
(03:03:48):
into her. Creation she was created essentially as a Female,
superman with time writers and artists improved upon her, execution
but she never did add anything to the superhero, mythos
at least not for. Me so if you trace the
story that far, back and if you believe that quote
That i've pulled from the, internet we Lost supergirl because
my Buddy dick didn't like, her And Marve wulflm was,
(03:04:10):
like How i'm going.
Speaker 3 (03:04:10):
To make it more, Palatable, okay.
Speaker 2 (03:04:13):
BUT i think it's interesting, Again like in The batgirl,
episode we killed the original Bat girl And batwoman out
of continuity because an editor thought they were. Stupid, yep
so same as the Super Pets. Ashley, true but The
superpets aren't. Girls Streaky streaky's a girl, maybe, well we don't.
Know But streaky's dead, too, Yes and that, kitty that
(03:04:37):
kitty is.
Speaker 3 (03:04:38):
Dead we don't like cats very.
Speaker 2 (03:04:40):
MUCH i Like.
Speaker 3 (03:04:41):
Streaky that's the only CAT i ever need to.
Speaker 2 (03:04:44):
LOVE i also think it's worth noting That chris AND
i vendors took place in nineteen eighty. Five The Terrible
Helen's Lader supergirl movie was released in nineteen eighty, four
the year before, this and this may have contributed TO
dc kind of wanting to remove her from the public consciousness.
Speaker 3 (03:04:59):
For a lo oh man because of that. Movie holy,
cow that movie's.
Speaker 2 (03:05:03):
Rough yeah fun, fact, though that movie now enjoys cult
classic status because of the ORIGINAL, VHS dvd And blu
ray sales have just been like through the. Roof, wow
that's the only way it recouped any of his. Money
excuse is.
Speaker 3 (03:05:14):
TERRIBLE i don't know. Why so that movie's really.
Speaker 2 (03:05:18):
BAD i don't know if that's so bad it's good
kind of.
Speaker 3 (03:05:19):
Thing, no it's. NOT i don't.
Speaker 2 (03:05:21):
KNOW i don't think it transcends, that BUT i think
for a lot of people it. Does AND i also
think because it's the first time you.
Speaker 3 (03:05:25):
Get to See, supergirl it's the Only.
Speaker 2 (03:05:27):
Supergirl AND i, Mean Helen slater looks like a Good.
Supergirl she definitely. Does In april of nineteen eighty, eight moving,
Forward John byrne created a character who would come to
be known as The Matrix, supergirl not Like neo And.
Jason can you tell us about that real?
Speaker 3 (03:05:47):
Quick? Uh, well, BASICALLY i don't know a lot of,
details but she is from an alternate di. Mention she
has shape shifting. Powers she's almost strong in Than superman
because she can shape. Shift and then she gone the
appearance Of supergirl in honor Of, superman like she followed
him back to this dimension IF i remember, Right, Yes
and that's AND i believe it's the same dimension that
(03:06:08):
he meets the Alternate zod and kills. Him that is, Correct, Yes.
Speaker 2 (03:06:11):
Okay the reason that we're just doing this quick recap
on that is because there is enough to do A
Matrix superl episode On she's Not she's Not. Carozerel ye.
Speaker 3 (03:06:19):
Uh and she was the she was The supergirl THAT
i talked about that Was supergirl During World Without.
Speaker 2 (03:06:25):
Superman, yes during the nineties and into the beginning of
the two Thousand.
Speaker 3 (03:06:28):
Yeah they didn't get rid of her until, like, yeah
two thousand.
Speaker 2 (03:06:31):
Four.
Speaker 3 (03:06:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:06:32):
Yeah there are some really weird backup stories where Like
carra is a ghost and she's talking to different, people
but they don't make any sense and they're really kind
of stupid and they have nothing to do with. Continuity
but So caara's disembodied voice was being used during this,
time AND i think that's maybe how they revealed eventually
that she Was Matrix supergirl that wasn't a Real. Supergirl,
Okay i'm sorry to skip, it but, yeah she's Not.
(03:06:55):
Caarazaurel but it's important to know that she was around
for ten years and they're definitely are. Enough there's enough
history there to do a whole lesson on that On Matrix. Supergirl,
yes which you know if you went over to patreon
dot com slash jawin J a W I I N.
Speaker 3 (03:07:10):

Speaker 2 (03:07:21):

Speaker 3 (03:07:25):

facebook dot. Com at the ten dollars, level you get
videos like The Redshirt diaries a day. Early, oh that's even.
Better that's what that's. Better you know there were you,
know we had the sponsorship and uh not many people.
Sponsored so that's why we changed, it just to get
(03:07:46):
into brass tacks and actually forced me to reveal my secret.
Plans didn't mean. To at A patreon dot com slash
jaw on J W I I n three dollars, level

level you get geek history lesson, extra which we're gonna

Speaker 3 (03:08:10):
But what specifically About? Supergirl we need to tease. Listeners
what are we gonna talk? About what do we want
to talk about more About, Matrix supergirl or.
Speaker 2 (03:08:16):
STREAM i think we're actually gonna talk about The supergol
pilot that we've already.
Speaker 3 (03:08:19):
Seen oh, okay all, right all, right all, right all,
right all, Right but we never know a geekiss never
know his lesson Extra but you can go over there
And patreon dot com slash jah on jaw i in
every little bit help helps keep.
Speaker 2 (03:08:34):
The lights on here super lights, on and it.
Speaker 3 (03:08:37):
Helps supports our future, endeavors like us starting another podcast
what ash lead's doing a video review, series me doing
a video review. Series go over, there support the. Show
thank you so much for your. Help now back to
the super.
Speaker 2 (03:08:50):
Lesson so it's the year two.
Speaker 3 (03:08:53):
Thousand it's the year two thousand right, now.
Speaker 2 (03:08:56):
You normally sing the song WHEN i say to that's
thou AND Dc. Comics, yeah DC's looking to simplify this
The supergirl, character The supergirl, character and Bring kara back
(03:09:20):
to her own. Title please come, Back, CARRA i can't
keep me GOING i Wish i'm glad you're.
Speaker 3 (03:09:27):
Laughing everybody out there is, like oh my.
Speaker 2 (03:09:30):
God so they were, like you know what story really
worked when she Was superman's cousin and we sent her
To earth and she. Crashed do you know who that?
Was Jeff Lob, no And Eddie. Braganson, Nope Dan, Dio oh,
Yes dandydo was the one who wanted to do. This
Jeff loob And Eddie burganson were the ones who, ACTUALLY
i know the issue she comes back. In, well a funny.
Speaker 3 (03:09:50):
Story And i've only seen this reported in interviews and
stuff like that or just, online SO i don't know
how much truth or. His but Supposedly dan The dio
went to a Six flags. Theme, OH i don't know the.
Story Six wag theme parks Have superman or none of The,
superman but they HAVE dc characters like there's the flashbas
stuff like.
Speaker 2 (03:10:07):
That and there's a green.
Speaker 3 (03:10:08):
Lantern yeah. Yeah and there was a wall at this
Six flags that he went. To i'm not a certain which,
one and it had the history Of supergirl and the
history Of flash and it was talking about The Matrix
supergirl and Like Wally, west and he remarked at how
complicated it, was and so he came back TO dc
and was, like we need to simplify these. Characters, well
(03:10:29):
there you. Go and that's and, THAT i know was
the main thrust of Why supergirl Became kara.
Speaker 2 (03:10:35):
Again, yes And Jeff low at the, time he's the
one responsible bringing For kara back in the final arc
of His Superman batman, series and it is In Superman
batman number, eight which came out in two thousand and.
Four the origin story is basically the same As kara
in her first. Appearance she crashes To, earth sent by
her parents From. Krypton at the end of the, story
she calls Herself, supergirl.
Speaker 3 (03:10:56):
But she crashes In, gotham in The Gotham bay in
a Giant kryptonite. Asteroid, yes she.
Speaker 2 (03:11:03):
Does because there's also an interview THAT i Read Jeff
low Gives Eddie brigands a lot of the credit for
this because they were talking about bringing this asteroid To,
earth bringing this asteroid To, earth and they were pitching
around like someone has to come in on this, asteroid
someone has to come in on this, asteroid and jefflo
was saying that it should Be supergirl without it Being.
Supergirl And Eddie braganza gave him the go.
Speaker 3 (03:11:21):
Ahead it was, like just make it Super. Girl, yeah that's,
cool that's. COOL i think that is also.
Speaker 2 (03:11:25):
Interesting. Nice this this, resurgence this bringing rack Of, kara
is also the first time that she interacts directly With
Power girl outside of any of the events that you,
know any of the big crossovers that.
Speaker 3 (03:11:37):
Happened, now really, quickly before we get too, FAR i
think we need to reveal Who Power girl.
Speaker 2 (03:11:43):
Is powergirl Is supergirl From earth to. Two. Yes now she's, older,
yes now. Sexier.
Speaker 3 (03:11:52):
Yes and In powergirl in the Pre crisis, universe she
was Super she was a grown Up, supergirl, yes like
maybe late twenties that grew up and became you, know
decided to step out from her cousin's. Legacy, yeah and
she kicks ass and she's. Awesome and in the post crisis,
(03:12:15):
universe they Kept Power girl in the universe and for
a long time she didn't know her, origin she didn't
know where she. Was, yeah blah blah blah. Blah and
then eventually During Infinite, crisis they were just, like, no
she's The earth To, supergirl and somehow she Survived crisis on.
Speaker 2 (03:12:32):
Infinitears, yeah we're not an infinite crisis quite, yet but
it's coming up real.
Speaker 3 (03:12:36):
So but, Still Power girl is grown Up. Supergirl she Is.
Kara she's grown.
Speaker 2 (03:12:42):
Up she Is kara like probably five eight years down the,
road i'd say.
Speaker 3 (03:12:48):
Ten you, think, oh, Yeah Power girls close to thirty
because she's because she's, yeah because she's very, muscular, strong
and she's very. Confident and actually that's the THING i
like about the. CHARACTER i like when they were, like,
no she's grown Up supergirl Because i'm like AND i
liked when they were both in the same universe because
you could be, like, Oh, carra that's how awesome a
lady you could?
Speaker 2 (03:13:07):
Become, yes Because Caa kara definitely suffers from the teenage girl,
insecurities but she's mostly like sixteen to, eighteen so it's
kind of, like what do you?
Speaker 3 (03:13:16):
Want there you.
Speaker 2 (03:13:16):
Go this is also the first time that she becomes
a member of The Teen. Titans she's not a huge
player on The Teen. Titans she's not like a mainstay
of the. Team that's more Of connor's kind of. Stay
BUT i think it's worth noting that unlike that, girl
she was a member of The Teen, titans A supergirl
series spins out of her, rebirth and this is the
first time That carara's stories are Subtitled The girl Of steel.
Speaker 3 (03:13:35):
Yep and started out By Jeff loeb And Ian.
Speaker 2 (03:13:38):
Churchill, yes and Then Mike turner took over on Art
cool During Infinite crisis.
Speaker 3 (03:13:46):
And find out a.
Speaker 2 (03:13:46):
Crisis can you Describe Infinite crisis and three? Cents? Listen?
Speaker 3 (03:13:50):
Oh at three cents or? Less N, oh Good, god
you keep doing this to.
Speaker 2 (03:13:53):
ME i know because it's really because the first TIME
i did, it we farted out of universe and nothing
on this show has been. Funnier. Nothing that's the funniest
thing you've ever. Said, okay, wow.
Speaker 3 (03:14:05):
Makes a really low bar for me to do in the.
Future No Infinite. Crisis we find out that A superboy
has survived the crisis On Infinite. Earth's he starts punching
the walls of reality and THE dc universe goes A
Monk robin's coming back from the, DEAD O max being
(03:14:27):
born And Power girl Of being From earth to This
superboy tries to destroy Our, earth Our superman stop, him
and Our superboy. Dies yes that's. It, no, sorry it wasn't.
Funny that's.
Speaker 2 (03:14:42):
Okay During crisis on, It During Infinite, crisis they all
have the Same kara is transported forward in time to
the thirty first. Century, yeah and she becomes right Little
superheroes and to move that mirror some of her, silvery.
Speaker 3 (03:14:57):
She encounters The Mark wade. Reboot, yeah version of The
legion Of.
Speaker 2 (03:15:02):
Superheros do we need to say anything about?
Speaker 3 (03:15:04):
That?
Speaker 2 (03:15:04):
Really, no we.
Speaker 3 (03:15:05):
Don't BUT i know somewhere down the line we're going
to do A legion Of superhero's episode AND i guarantee
you that that episode is probably going to be six. Parts,
oh it's going to be. Elite it's so there are
so many different you want to talk, about LIKE dc
characters that are affected by the crises The, Legion like
The legion gets like decimated every time there's a.
Speaker 2 (03:15:25):
Crisis well, yeah because their books never saw. That well
so they need an excuse?
Speaker 3 (03:15:28):
Me, yeah, yeah there will probably be like a part,
four like a three Part legion Of superheros, episodes, like
because there's just no way we could cover it any
less time than. That, Cool but, yes this is The
Mark wade reboot. Version this is actually version? Three is it?
Speaker 2 (03:15:41):
Really?
Speaker 3 (03:15:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:15:42):
Wow kara returns.
Speaker 3 (03:15:44):
Technically, four but three technically. Four, yeah there's another, one
don't we'll get to, It.
Speaker 2 (03:15:50):
Okay So cara eventually returns to the twenty first century
During jason's favorite of all possible, events fifty.
Speaker 3 (03:15:57):
Two, well it's actually a comic book, series but, yeah
it's an, event.
Speaker 2 (03:16:00):
Sure and during fifty, two kind of the important thing
to know is That Donna troy remembers the Original supergirl
and two members that she sacrificed herself to save the.
Multiverse and this is kind of the first stirring that
the multiverse has been MultiPar not that we, didn't you,
know tacitly admit to that when power comes From earth
to or. Anything. Nope So Jamal eigil And Sterling gates
(03:16:21):
are two people who worked On.
Speaker 3 (03:16:23):
Supergirl they did that thing.
Speaker 2 (03:16:24):
Once and WHAT i want to say about that Is
Jamal eigil is responsible for a big push in the
modern era to Change supergirl's costume to be less revealing
because she.
Speaker 3 (03:16:34):
Had a middriff belly reveal When Michael turner brought her. Back,
yeah Because Michael turner he draws ladies with long, legs
impossibly long wa yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:16:43):
Yeah, Yeah and and it's, cute but you, know moving
kind of as the way the winds are. Blowing you
don't always want to get cheesecake.
Speaker 3 (03:16:52):
Shots up some girl skirt of a sixteen year, Old.
Speaker 2 (03:16:55):
Yeah of someone who is decidedly under. Age So Jamal
eigil gets a lot of credit for putting her in
biker shorts or just being, like, look she's not exposed
for the world and lowering the shirt and stuff like,
that and that's what's really important about mentioning. That and
then during The New Krypton ARC.
Speaker 3 (03:17:12):
Yep which is where they discover there is a New
kryptonian city out. There it's one of Brainiac in enlarges
The brainian it comes To. Earth he finds he has
A krytonian. City they enlarge it and it like sort
of becomes an asteroid Around.
Speaker 2 (03:17:24):
Earth, yes And kara is reunited with her parents for
the first.
Speaker 3 (03:17:27):
Time, yes because they were inside that. City and then
her mom, DIES i, know and then she cries about
it for a long time a.
Speaker 2 (03:17:36):
Lot then she basically spends kind of the next five
or so years paling around in a bunch of different
events events in, Miniseriies she's part Of Blackest, Day Blackest, Night.
Speaker 3 (03:17:48):
Brightest, Day, yeah because her mom comes back as a black. Lantern,
yeah it's it's. INTERESTING a lot Of Blackest night is very. Interesting,
yes it's really.
Speaker 2 (03:17:58):
Depressing.
Speaker 3 (03:17:58):
Yeah and then all The kryptonians. Die.
Speaker 2 (03:18:00):
Yes and then an event Called war The. Superman and
basically the most important thinking About war of The superman
is That New krypton is destroyed And kara has to
deal with the death of her whole race all over. Again,
yep so you kind of get in, microcosm you know,
What she And superman a kind of been suffering all this.
Time and then we get to an event called The
(03:18:21):
new fifty. Two, gee and what's The new fifty? Two
three sentences or.
Speaker 3 (03:18:25):
Less flash Missus, mommy he runs. Fast mommy's still, dead
but the whole universe has changed. Exactly this Gives kara
a new.
Speaker 2 (03:18:41):
Origin her ship still comes To, krypton lands In, smallville
but it goes all the way through the core of
The earth and re emerges In. Siberia and then when
she comes, out she's amnesiak and has no memory Of.
Speaker 3 (03:18:53):
Krypton she's kind of, well a pain in the. Ass,
actually she's a she's an. Anchry and THEN i would,
like are you going to talk about the redesign of
the costume very?
Speaker 2 (03:19:04):
Briefly, Okay And i'm only going to talk about the
story one more beat in the story and Then i'm
gonna cut it off because it's close to kind of
what's being published right.
Speaker 3 (03:19:11):
Now, yeah and they canceled the book, Too.
Speaker 2 (03:19:12):
They did cancel the. Book SHE i think the most
interesting thing about her story in The new fifty two
is she goes on to Meet, superman of, course and
then she takes a wormhole back To crypton and finds
it orbiting a Blue sun and that's a big deal
Because Blue sons aren't kind Of. Kryptonians she discovers that
it's in ruins even though the planet is, intact and
she battles against a villain Named, rain and then following,
(03:19:33):
that she joins A Red Lantern.
Speaker 3 (03:19:34):
Corps they Don't and also in The new fifty, Two
Cyborg superman is her. Father oh, YEAH i forgot about. That, yeah,
yeah which is kind of. WEIRD i like. THAT i
like Hayne Ken. Chobbiings we still call, Her, yeah it's
he's still Called Cyborg, superman but he's her.
Speaker 2 (03:19:50):
Dad but he's a Real yeah, yeah they totally redesigned
her costume for the new fifty, two which they you,
Know condi did for, everyone but she got a pretty big.
Update she went from ad dress arguably a bathing. Skirt and,
yeah and here's the thing about that bathing. Suit you're
(03:20:10):
trying to desexualize a character who's, underage and they slap a,
big bright color over a very intimate part of her.
Body they basically gave her red.
Speaker 3 (03:20:20):
Panties just say. That, yeah but it's not even it's
not even.
Speaker 2 (03:20:23):
Panties it's literally just over that area between her. Legs
and you're, like you, know if the idea is that
we're trying to make her more recovered while still having
an interesting, design why wouldn't you just take the frank
quietly designed From Alstar superman The superwoman.
Speaker 3 (03:20:40):
Costume, oh that's a good, design because it is you know.
WHAT I my Favorite supergirl design is the animated. SERIES
i love THE t shirt and, jeans AND i know
they gave that costume tour in the comic books, Briefly
yeah that you can never top, it that that design.
Speaker 2 (03:20:54):
Done BUT i just think the new costume is interesting
because he's got long sleeves and no pants.
Speaker 3 (03:20:58):
Yeah and weird boots. Yeah knee boots.
Speaker 2 (03:21:01):
Yeah, yeah like The Wonder woman knee. Boots. Yeah and
then her series has been canceled and there seem to
be no plans to have one out to come up
with his.
Speaker 3 (03:21:10):
PILOTS i don't think we haven't seen.
Speaker 2 (03:21:12):
Her, Yeah so that's kind of where we're at in
her publication. HISTORY i, mean we Had Matrix supergirl In,
convergence but that's kind of about. It in other, Media
supergirl The.
Speaker 3 (03:21:22):
Ritual supergirl appeared In convergence, too she was in.
Speaker 2 (03:21:26):
There you, know the, Media supergirl has appeared extensively on.
Screen we're going to go through just some of the.
Highlights she's In superman the animated, Series The New adventures
Of batman are The New Batman adventures in episode Of
Girls Night, out which is such a good, episode And
Justice League. Unlimited she's voiced By nicole tom across The board.
Speaker 3 (03:21:44):
And on What happens In Justice League, LIMITED i don't.
Know she travels to The legion Of super h and
falls in love With brainiac. Five that is a great. Episode,
YES i was, LIKE i don't know what. Happened that's
one of my favorite episodes.
Speaker 2 (03:21:57):
Of just she appears In. Smallville she's played by a.
Speaker 3 (03:21:59):
Girl, yeah and she actually is quite? Good is she?
Speaker 2 (03:22:04):
Really? Yeah SO i SAW i haven't Watched. Smallville i've
seen like two, episodes and the picture online didn't inspire.
Confidence she's not she's not.
Speaker 3 (03:22:14):
The best actress in the, world BUT i think she's
better Than Tom. Welling SO i really liked. IT i
thought she was a Great, supergirl cool and she knew
how to fly and he, didn't and so that that
Was that's. Cute that was a big conflict and then
funny enough in The smallville combox series that was continued
that's followed the. Contuity Brian BRIAN Q, Miller you really
(03:22:35):
liked that.
Speaker 2 (03:22:36):
Series it's.
Speaker 3 (03:22:36):
GREAT i love. It as season, eleven as they call,
it you find out because she disappears in the last
season without saying goodbye to, him and you find out
that she went to the thirty first century and The
league and The superheroes And superman adjoins. Her and by the,
way the redesign they give her in the season, eleven
probably my Favorite supergirl costume over the animated, series because
(03:22:59):
she's fully cloth nice And google Google Smallville season Eleven supergirl. Costume, hey,
well why don't you do? That Because i'm gonna keep
talking about. Show i'll show it To, ashley but you Listeners, Goggle,
Goggle goggle And google both those search. Engines season, Eleven,
Smallville season Eleven supergol.
Speaker 2 (03:23:17):
Costume supergirl is also one of the leads Of super
Best Friends, forever which are THE dc animated shorts voiced
By Nicole. Sullivan you also need to just stop this
podcast and go watch them a like a minute long.
Each they're. Amazing she's super, funny she's very very. Cute
she's starring in THE Cbs supergirl show played By melissa Ban,
nooist and there, was of course the Controversial supergirl movie
(03:23:41):
Starring Helen. Slater, OH i like that. Costume that's super.
Speaker 3 (03:23:45):
Cool, yeah it's like a. Cape it's like a cape
and a skirt at the same. Time and she has
she's literally the most, Clothed like this is another version
of it there. There that's so. Cool. Wow so that's
my lesson on caras or, YES i show a pictures
on an audio. Podcast recommended. Reading recommended. Read that's where
(03:24:06):
we tell you the stuff you should be reading if
you want to. Read, Now, actually this recommended reading is
going to be a little bit different than our normal recommended.

yes we. Will, well we're gonna Have let just tell,
them we're gonna have ge kiss you less. Magnet WHAT
i want one of? THOSE i made them with my bare.
Speaker 3 (03:31:02):
Hand, HEY i knows kiss your lesson? Nationally, yeah DO
i get a? Magnet now you already have?
Speaker 2 (03:31:07):
ONE i?
Speaker 4 (03:31:07):
Do?
Speaker 3 (03:31:08):
Yeah hotly your Fridge i've already. Won let's move on
to discussion where we talk about, things Especially, supergirl especially Super.
Speaker 2 (03:31:16):
Girl we're gonna have probably a brief discussion because we're
going kind of along. Here that's, Fine that's what happens
when you do old. Characters. Yep SO i wanted to
ask you about her costume and what we thought a
really great, update but we we found one in Small
google in The Cats taggs costume cape. Skirt SO i
(03:31:36):
wanted to ask you, because As i've, said a couple of,
times and there's no Ongoing supergirl series right, now which is.
Sad which is. SAD i, mean regardless of the television
show coming, Out she's the Female, kryptonian. Yep AND i
think THAT i really like Power. GIRL i think Power
girl is a very interesting character. Too BUT i think
THAT i Think Power girl is Holding supergirl back because
(03:31:58):
you'll never see her grow, up because that's kind of
What Power girl is supposed to be.
Speaker 3 (03:32:02):
Doing but you'll never see Any comfoo character grow, UP i,
know but we. Did Dick grayson somehow squeaked by. That,
YEAH i. Don't, somehow he he, he, yeah somehow he
got through.
Speaker 2 (03:32:15):
It BUT i would LIKE i would really like to
See kara as as a grown as a. Woman, okay
and this one in this. Continuity, oh you'll never see,
IT i, KNOW i, KNOW i KNOW i never, will
BUT i would like to see.
Speaker 3 (03:32:27):
That so also look at it this. Way Earth too
is the world for, That, yes the world to see those.
Things an Older superman Married, superman and there you're. Married
superman is getting his own title What i'm talking About
In Earth. Too he was married To lois In Earth.
Too in The new fifty, Two batman And catwoman. Married, yeah.
(03:32:50):
Daughter ye the best version of The huntress ever is
in that. Book, yeah so, YES i REALLY i see your.
Point but also that's the point of The earth to. Book.
Speaker 2 (03:33:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:33:01):
Character com book characters can't age because then their stories are.
Over and com books are all about the story never. Ends,
yes they, say they, say, uh there's a tagline For
superman and it's like the never ending battle. Continues it's very.
True that's comic.
Speaker 2 (03:33:16):
Books so the question THAT i had hidden up inside
all of that thing THAT i just said is would
you rather See carr return to the Dcuyou howard's Being
brandon right now in her own? Title or would you
rather get A Superman Family maybe not call it, that
but that kind of you, know where she's world, building
like With superman And superboy And lois And Superman.
Speaker 3 (03:33:37):
Family, yeah hundred percent. Immediately oh, yeah because With Superman,
family you get the chance to have the other, characters
you get the chance to Reboot.
Speaker 2 (03:33:48):
Streaky do you Think streaky's gonna be in the? Show?
Speaker 3 (03:33:52):
Oh, man if those writers are, smart because there are
flashback to the farm that she lives, on they will
they will have a scene where a cat jumps on
the bed and she's like, Down streaky and then and
then just play it off like, that and so like
all us comic fans are.
Speaker 2 (03:34:11):
Like, yes, well that's all it. Is in the animated,
series in that Episode, Unity streak the, horse No streaky's
the cat comments.
Speaker 3 (03:34:19):
The horse Comment i'm, SORRY i gotta mixed up for.
Speaker 2 (03:34:22):
And and in that Episode, unity WHICH i rewatch before
before we recorded, this she's standing in the kitchen and
the cat walks by and she picks it up and she's, like, High,
STREAKY i missed, you and then puts the cat down
and that's all you. Need and it's just a normal
it's not a super.
Speaker 3 (03:34:34):
Cat, Yeah and it makes every comic fan out there go, like, yes,
yeah that's all you. Need, yeah, YEAH i hope SO i,
there come, on there's gotta be. YEAH i, mean if
they don't go For streaky like at least have, her
at least have her like play with the horse and, go, hey, COMMENT.
Speaker 2 (03:34:49):
I don't know. Horses horses are more expensive On south than.
Speaker 3 (03:34:51):
CAT i know we'll see the, cat, yeah, MAN i
THINK i think we'll See. STREAKY i don't think we'll
See streaking until the end of the first. Season depending
on how show's. Received.
Speaker 2 (03:35:01):
INTERESTING i think it'll be Like The.
Speaker 3 (03:35:02):
FLASH i think they'll they'll hold way. Back, yeah and
then if if the show is, positive then they'll be, Like,
okay everything in the kitchen sink yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:35:10):
Yeah, Yeah oh my, GOD i hope We Gelex luthor's
evil niece. Nasty oh, yeah that would be so. FUNNY
i would laugh for. Days what do you think is
the over under on Super girl ever appearing in a?
Speaker 3 (03:35:23):
Movie the over?
Speaker 2 (03:35:25):
Under, yeah that's like a betting THING i learned. RECENTLY
i CAN i just give you a? Percentage sure.
Speaker 3 (03:35:35):
If it was, me if you're running the, studio if
it was, me based on what we have and WHAT
i know Of Superman, batman which is not.
Speaker 2 (03:35:45):
Much really, YEAH i.
Speaker 3 (03:35:51):
Think it's ninety. Percent. Uh they set it up And
man Of steel it's. There oh, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
go to the. Ship he goes in the. Ship there's
an open pod that's. Empty who the hell's in that?
Pod supergirl does not have to be his blood, relation
(03:36:11):
direct blood. Relation that's. True that. Ship to, me the
reason why The joel key, works the reason why there
was A superman suit in the first, place is because
that was a ship of The house of L, yeah
so she's an l of some. Derivation but ACTUALLY i
think it'd be funny to make her, well she she
is older than him in the con, books but this
would make it even. More she's like thousands of years
(03:36:32):
older than. Him, yeah she.
Speaker 2 (03:36:34):
Is ACTUALLY i didn't mention, this but she is chronologically,
older but because she's frozen in.
Speaker 3 (03:36:38):
Stacy she was sent off From rypton as a. Teenager
he was sent off A krypton as a. Baby, yeah
she accepted the.
Speaker 2 (03:36:44):
Mission she was.
Speaker 3 (03:36:44):
Saying that's part of the reason that the interesting dynamic
between the two of them is that she is older than,
him but now he's like an adult over. Her.
Speaker 2 (03:36:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah so it like creates, conflict which is
interesting that she's not like emotionally at that. Place, no
Because supergol is very. Emotional, yes but you.
Speaker 3 (03:37:00):
Go back to the, movies there was a rumor around
That man Of Steel too was gonna be That brainiac
was coming For, kara and that she was loose On earth.
SOMEWHERE i don't. KNOW i think the story elements are.
THERE i honestly think it's probably sixty. PERCENT i don't
(03:37:21):
think it's, ninety BUT.
Speaker 2 (03:37:23):
I THINK i think if Wonder woman really takes, off
like if they nail, that then they'll have Beat marvel to. It,
yep BECAUSE i don't care what anyone says about, like, oh,
well they've Had Black widow, Forever like we haven't had
a female lead in a, movie solo, movie in a solo.
Movie so if Wonder woman takes, OFF dc is gonna
HAVE i, mean regardless of How Batman superman, does DC's
(03:37:44):
gonna have all the clout. Yep AND i think that
those execs will be, like who's the nearest female character
that we can throw at the.
Speaker 3 (03:37:51):
Wall if Wonder woman does.
Speaker 2 (03:37:52):
Well if Wonder woman does, well AND i think That, Supergirl,
supergirl And catwoman are probably your logical ones you are
going to go to it.
Speaker 3 (03:37:59):
Will Super girl just because of the name recognition. Exactly and,
also by the, Way girl Of, Steel i'd see that, movie,
right it's a, great great. Title it's a great title. Subtitle,
Yeah girl Of. Steel, Cool now that's the title of the.
Movie don't even call It, Supergirl girl Of.
Speaker 2 (03:38:18):
Steel, well they Did man Of, steel so it'd be
the same kind of. Branding, yeah, awesome that's my. Discussion,
Yay CAN i do my teaching.
Speaker 3 (03:38:26):
