Tommie Hernández es una mayagüezana de corazón, diseñadora de moda con más de 20 años de experiencia y fundadora de Sirena Patterns, donde le enseña a personas de todas partes del mundo a confeccionar trajes de baño. Tommie se sienta conmigo y cuenta como todo comenzó en aquel verano del 1982, sus años en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras, donde completó un bachillerato en arquitectura antes de pasar a estudiar en el Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) en Nueva York y ese regreso a su pueblo natal donde comenzó su primer negocio. En el edificio había cuatro fábricas de ropa independientes que les suplían a varias marcas internacionales y a pesar de una solicitud de desalojo debido a una grieta el 23 de abril de 2013, se les pidió a muchos trabajadores volver al día siguiente. A las 9:00 a.m. del 24 de abril de 2013 el Rana Plaza colapsó.
