In this chilling true story, Shayla recalls a summer stay with her grandmother at her aunt and uncle’s house—a seemingly normal, modern, newly built home in a cookie-cutter suburban neighborhood. Nothing about the place felt haunted. That is, until the day her sister left her alone at the top of the stairs.
With her Kindle in hand and her favorite lyric video queued up, Shayla was practicing the popular hit “Hey There Delilah” when she felt a strange unease creep in. She tried brushing it off, but soon moved halfway down the stairs, closer to safety. That’s when things took a terrifying turn.
Right as she reached the lyric, “Take your breath away,” she heard it. A voice—deep, monstrous, and chillingly close—sang the very same words in her ear. Not through the Kindle. Not from the video. In her ear. The voice harmonized with her... and then her Kindle began to vibrate.
Frozen in fear, she screamed, threw the device, and ran to her grandmother and sister in the living room, sobbing and shaking. Her grandmother, trying to make sense of it, suggested it was just a hacker. But Shayla knew better. Hackers don’t whisper song lyrics in your ear. Hackers don’t shake your soul.
The house may have been brand new, but the energy that joined her that day didn’t care about property value or modern fixtures. Something was in that house. Something that wanted to be heard. To this day, she can’t hear that song without remembering the voice that shouldn’t have been there.
