Around 2 a.m., after everyone had nodded off, she slipped into the spare bedroom. The TV outside hummed low, cars passed on the street, and the apartment seemed at peace. But when she lay beneath the blankets, something pressed down on her chest. Then her arms. Then her legs. She couldn’t move. Couldn’t scream. Couldn’t even open her eyes.
Paralyzed, yet fully aware, she listened in horror as a guttural, inhuman voice growled into her ear: “Kill them all.” The words weren’t just for her—they were about everyone in the apartment. Tears streamed down her face as the pressure grew heavier. When at last she managed to wrench her eyes open, the room was bathed in black and red.
And then, just as suddenly, she was free. She bolted upright, ran for the door, and tore into the living room—just in time to see the TV flicker violently before snapping into white static with a deafening roar. She screamed for help. Only her boyfriend’s father stirred. When she poured out the story, he looked at her calmly and said words she’ll never forget: “Oh honey, that’s just my ghost protecting me.”
Her boyfriend later dismissed it as sleep paralysis. But she knew what she felt. She knew what she heard. And nothing about it felt protective.
Sleep paralysis? Or something else—something darker that used her helpless state to speak words no dream ever should? That night, one truth became clear: sometimes the most terrifying hauntings don’t just happen around us. They happen to us.
