90s Nostalgia with Artivist Julio Salgado
Today’s episode is a two-part conversation with artist and activist Julio Salgado. Viewers can see Julio’s vibrant art work at immigrant rights rallies, the LA Times, or promoting one of LA’s greatest dance nights, Cumbiaton. Julio’s status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the migrant rights movement. Recorded at the end of a long week, these two elder millennials, Brenda and Julio, from the class of 2001, revisit some of the female vocalists of the '90s who shaped Jullio’s early experiences living in the US.
Through this chat, we’ll take you on a nostalgic journey through the sounds of an era when women were taking center stage fronting bands in the 90s and into the early 2000s; and we’ll draw some parallels to some of the leading women in music today.
I asked Julio to pick five songs for us to discuss and you can hear what songs we reference through this playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/02bVhKS9ihFMiGIJGEswUc?si=c8b2e64c809c43ff
