subscribe button wherever you are listening.
Let's get into it. But Montreal is one of those
cities I have not been to yet, which is super weird, but that's

(01:32):
where Hayden Nolan is today. How are you, ma'am?
I'm doing great. How's it going, Jacob?
Doing a fantastic well, not physically fantastic, but I'm
here and enjoying the music I'm listening to these days.
Let me tell you, that's for. Sure, accounts.
Yeah. And of course the weather is
great. So besides those two things.
You can't. Really go wrong.

(01:53):
So I'm glad you're on the show today because I always like
sharing fantastic music from Canada and you're in Montreal
and it's a nice vibe coming out of that area these days.
What do you think? Yeah, it's a it's a really
special city that I've always found is, especially from an

(02:15):
outsiders point of view, it's probably pretty hard to
understand until you're here, but there's so much happening
all the time. It's never quiet and it really
leads to some interesting music and and culture coming out of
here that I think is really unique to to the city.
And, and I want to say you're a veteran, but you're a seasoned
musician. You're you know what you're

(02:37):
doing and I want to know how yougot to where you are now.
Walk me through your music experience up to this point.
Of course. So it's been, it's been a while
in the making. I started doing this when I was
quite young. I've always been really driven
to be a musician, to be playing in bands and to be making music

(03:00):
as a songwriter and a guitarist.So when I was really young I
played in a few bands here and there and then when I was 14 I
formed this group called the Record Breakers here in
Montreal. That ended up having quite a
good run that got me through my teenage years into my early

(03:20):
adult years and taught me the ins and outs of the, you know,
Canadian or Montreal music sceneand, and led to some some crazy,
crazy experiences over the years.
I, I was able to release a bunchof albums and, and you know how
it is, I'm sure any, any artist listening understand how,
especially when you're starting, you're going to make so many

(03:42):
mistakes and you're gonna figureout what works for you.
And, you know, sure, we all still are doing that to this
day, but it's really nice to be able to do that when you're 1516
or 18 years old to where it's, you know, it's not as there's
not as much on the line, let's say.

(04:02):
And it's a great way to, to learn with your friends.
So I was able to do that. It led to some crazy
experiences, such as in 2018, the band got to open up for Bon
Jovi here in Montreal, which wasmind blowing.
That's awesome. And yeah, we were basically
together until about 2021. And now it's it's come to my

(04:23):
solo career where I'm really diving in deeper into my love
for country music and I'm all infor the journey.
Super excited for it. So they just mentioned your,
your, your love for country music.
What does that come from? What is that genre?
Just you know what? This is the genre I'm picking
and I'm going to thrive in it. So on your theme Of Montreal,

(04:44):
this is where I find it to be quite fun because it's
notoriously not a city for country music.
At least it wasn't when I was growing up.
It was definitely one of those places that was victim to the I
listened to everything but country music, which the two The
tables have turned, I'll tell you that here.
That's good. Yeah, over the last few years,

(05:06):
things have really gotten crazy. And gosh, Nashville artists are
flocking here now filling out venues.
And it's, it's really, really fun.
But essentially when I was 15, so I grew up listening to a lot
of classic rock. The Beatles were my my biggest
inspiration. I got into a lot of Blues music
and, and, and whatnot. But in 2015, the band at the

(05:28):
time, we were able to open up and meet Blue Rodeo at this
fundraiser happening here in Montreal.
And it was one of those moments where you look back and you're
like, OK, if that didn't happen,I'm not sure where I would have
been. I mean, as a Canadian yourself,
I'm sure you've heard an awful lot of Blue Rodeo and they've

(05:48):
frequented your area probably a little bit more than they have
where I am even. But they were just so kind to
us. And their songwriting was just,
it was just something else. And it got me hooked instantly.
And from there, it was really the rabbit hole because Blue
Rodeo may be on the on the grandscheme, you know, they're
notoriously Canadian country band, but compared to a lot of
American artists, they're a little less country.

(06:09):
And it was the perfect entryway as somebody who was really into
rock music to get into the country world.
And I, maybe when I first got into it, I was worried, is this
gonna be another one of those, You know, it's a couple of years
that I'm into this and then I move on.
But it's been over a decade now and there's no signs of me of me
moving away. I'll tell you that.
I've, it's really become what I love so much.

(06:33):
I've, I've been to Nashville, I've gotten to know people down
there. I've had the pleasure of of
making a lot of country music now and just appreciating the
jar tremendously going back through the decades, listening
to the music and then also beingvery involved in the new music
coming out, you know. So it's been, you know, it's

(06:53):
been a decade in the making, thecountry music love, and it's
just gonna keep growing from there.
And you, you definitely have your own take on on the country
music vibe. And let me tell you because I'm
listening to Flowers, your latest single here that we have
for the show. Yeah, No, I'm.
I'm a big fan of it from the, assoon as I heard it because one,

(07:14):
it's, it's unique in this country, but it is unique.
And I think it's a great benefitto putting this type of music
out there because it will draw the ear in.
And I'm a big fan of something that's catchy and, and it hooks
you in because that's just just how I listen to music,
regardless of the genre. And it just falls right in line

(07:34):
to that. So tell me about this track, how
you got inspired and how you wrote it.
Appreciate it. I'm glad you're liking it.
What I've been really into over the last few years is the
production of 90s country. And there's something special
happening in that decade that I've been really wanting to
recreate in a modern, in a modern way.

(07:56):
So this song actually came abouta few years ago while I was in
university. I was studying music and I
happened to have this great songwriting teacher who's
unfortunately passed away since, but he, he taught 2 courses, 2
songwriting courses while I was there.
And I got to meet my best friends in that class.
And this was a song that I wroteas a it was for a project.

(08:22):
I knew I was going to use it formyself at one point or another.
And I put I put everything I hadinto it.
But it basically came to be in 20, early 2023 for this project.
And I was like, OK, I'm, I've, I've got the all clear here.
We're going to make something that sounds, you know, like it's
still coming out now, but reallystrongly embodies like 90s power

(08:46):
ballads. So I went about trying to really
nail that production, which was a lot of fun.
I was heavily involved in that and it was a real blast.
I got to have some really cool musicians on.
And the song itself is, it's oneof those heartbreak songs, but
that's got a little bit of a, you know, a positive ending to

(09:08):
it. And and it's, yeah, it's a song
basically about time moving on after a breakup and how a lot of
things remain the same actually, even though like in in the
moment, you're like, my whole world's ruined.
But you look back and you're like, hold on.
Most, most things are actually still the same.
Except as the song goes, I just don't buy flowers anymore.

(09:30):
But yeah, it was it was a reallycool challenge to put out
something that sounded like it could have come out in the 90s,
but hopefully can still compete with more of the modern stuff
out there. And it's one of those, it's one
of those trends that's definitely growing.
I'd say in Nashville now, there's some really cool artists
that are doing a bit more of that throwback thing.

(09:51):
Like Zach Top is one of the big ones right now.
And I just love that. I love the sound and I love the
the humor and the catchiness of the 90s.
So anyways, I hope people can hear that in it and and take
from it what they will, but it was a blast to make.
And I hope they do. And they're gonna do that right
now because we're gonna play it on the show at this moment.

(10:14):
So let's get. Our Listen to flowers.
He didn't. Nolan right here on the show.

(10:34):

those, but it should be a fun one trying to get out there a
little bit more. It's the first summer where
we're the bands together hittingthe road, so it's there should

(14:52):
be a lot of fun. We had a a busy springtime and
I'm honestly really looking forward to seeing where that
grows and hopefully we'll get some new music in the fall if
things go well. But yeah, mostly staying in, you
know, out in this area, Quebec and probably eastern Ontario
roughly, but hoping to eventually maybe, I don't know,
