Dungeoneering Done Dirt Cheap
In Dungeoneering Done Dirt Cheap, everweird plays the Gunderholfen megadungeon solo (!) using the BECMI D&D ruleset from the 1980s. Expect lots of character, uh, turnover as this dungeon does its worst. It's old school dungeon-delving done solo. Editing this really highlighted how much I was messing up rules and turns. But when I finished, I thought it really reflects the chaos of the situation. A story emerges based on dice rolls and bad decisions.

We're back in the megadungeon and this time we brought a priest! Turns out, 10th level clerics are pretty handy when you're strolling through a city populated by the undead. Maybe we can convince him to hang around a while.

The whole gang gets back together in the city, seeks a new patron, gets some intel, hires a bunch of retainers, and goes back to the megadungeon.

What started out as an experiment -- "how would it feel to play a level 10 thief in Gunderholfen?" -- became an object lesson in the value of playing to discover the story rather than creating a narrative before play.

The exploration continues with our new party member, Neyla, the magic-user. We cast from a scroll. We combust some creeps. And then we find level 4b.

We have problems to solve: scrolls to read, an exit through level 4, a company member to heal. But we don't know that what lies ahead is worse than what we're trying to escape.

You know that feeling when your dungeoneering day is filled with random encounters, an accidental B&E on some ogres' home, and it's not even noon? This one is personally frustrating.

The crew wraps up their time in the grotto by deceiving at least 2 of the grotesques and raiding the place for treasure. The dramatic conclusion! Also, I evaluate all my hacks for accelerating play.

I didn't even realize until editing how hairy this gets. The party moves on without Galadrel exploring more of the dungeon before leaving and stumbling across a recruit. Then they try to make opposing deals with two of the groteseques! Part 3 is coming!

I wanted to give the new Old School Essentials Quick Delve, The Grotesques' Grotto, a spin. Instead of making it a side quest for the Gunderholfen party, I decided to roll up a new party. This also allowed me to try some solo hacks I've been developing without feeling like I'm ruining continuity in Gunderholfen. In part 1, I roll up characters and set the quest in motion. There is...a setback.

Level 4 continues to prove exceedingly dangerous, if a little mundane. Who knew cave lizards had so many hit points?

After regrouping following the death (?) of Faqual, the party heads back to Gunderholfen. It's their calling, their destiny, they figure. This time, on to Level 4...it doesn't seem so bad.

The party moves backward just to move forward again. Or vice versa. It feels like we got more of the map drawn but found nothing new. That's megadungeon life.
