(00:00):
Scott Vord the sweet sounds right thereof lead singer of yachtleey Crue, Philly
Ocean, who joins us now,Good morning, Philly, Good morning,
Scott, how are you today?Good? I love that you guys were
working with Jimmy Buffett's crew on puttingtogether not just this song, but also

(00:23):
this new EP. Sees the Days e a s It's a word pun
that doesn't translate on the radio aswell. Tell me about working with Buffetts
guys on this new EP. Imean, it's kind of a dream come
true. You know, obviously,Jimmy Buffett is one of our musical idols,
and it was a huge loss andwe're very sad that he's no longer

(00:45):
with us. However, you know, it was just so incredibly humbling that
he wanted to work with us andthat we were able to to do some
of that before he left. Andman, we kind of like it ourselves
in some similar ways to what hedid, because really endeavor to create a
place that is feel good with aton of good music that people know by

(01:10):
heart, almost even a culture,if you will, And that's kind of
what it has become in the pastseven years that we've been playing yacht rock
all across the country. People getin the same vibe as that they come
out. They wear captain's hats, they dress the part, They party together
before and after the show, andthey sing along. They dance all night

(01:30):
long at our shows, and it'sjust a huge party and it's awesome to
see. Did it takes some convincing, especially for some of the artists that
you cover or are named in honorof that you weren't making fun of them.
No, Yeah, And I thinkthey've really come around now because you
know, when we started, theydidn't know if it was kind of ironic,

(01:56):
and I think it's sad to saythere's a little bit of irony to
what we do, but only inthe sense that this music for a lot
of a lot of years was regardedas like, you know, this cheesy
soft rock. Now it's it's kindof come full circle and it's really recognized
for what it is, which isjust it's just good music with really fun

(02:19):
themes, great melodies, great guitarlicks, great musicality, and it's just
it's kind of one of those things, like it doesn't it doesn't matter if
people think it's cheesy. We're allin on it and we love it.
Yeah. Well, I'm interested asto how you came to be acquainted with
this music because we're usually talking aboutlate seventies throughout the early eighties for the

(02:39):
yacht rock era. By the lookat You, Philly, you weren't alive
at that point, well not forsome of it. But this was still
the soundtrack of my childhood. Youknow, my parents. This music was
still very very popular in my youngeryears. My parents played this music all
the time I grew up, youknow, people going, well, why

(03:00):
are you listening to Christopher Cross?Like that was just my life. And
so I had a very long appreciationfor this music and a deep love of
it. And so when I whenthey had the opportunity to audition to be
in the band, I was,you know, and I heard what they
were doing. I was like,oh my god, this is literally made
for me, Like this is soperfect, and I love the chance to

(03:22):
give this music new life. Yeah. And when you go see a yachtlee
cruise show, not only do youget some of the originals, like the
song we just featured a moment agoSex on the Beach, but also hall
and oh it's Christopher Cross. KennyLoggins. Yeah, Ambrosia and I love
that you guys often do one ofmy favorite songs of all time, Break

(03:44):
My Stride by Matthew Wilder. Haveyou had a chance Have you had a
chance to talk with some of theseartists that you've you've covered and they're and
what do they think about what you'redoing? You know, we have.
We We've met Elliott Lorie, We'vethat's Peter Beckett from Player, and a
handful of others. We've also metMichael McDonald's sister, who's a yacht cru

(04:06):
fan. She's been to a tonof shows, and we're told that Michael
knows of us. Ironically, ourproducer, Chris rod Algae is also a
mixing engineer and he's working on thenew Doobie Brothers album. So you know,
we're in the same circles and we'veheard good things. That's all I

(04:27):
can really tell you. We've heardgood things from these artists. I think
you know, they feel honored, you know that people are perpetuating their legacy
and playing their music and that there'sa kind of a second or third life
to these songs. Yeah, soI think they're ultimately grateful. Michael McDonald's
been on our show a couple oftimes. Has a great sense of humor
and if you have some time today, I encourage you to listen to his

(04:47):
song through the Eyes of a Childfrom the South Park soundtrack that he sings.
It's absolutely brilliant. Yeah, sowhat's it like after the show?
Here is we're talking with Philly Ocean, lead singer of Yachtlee Crue. They're
coming to the Steelhouse on Friday,June twenty eighth. Go to Steelhouse Omaha
dot com or Yachtlee Crue dot comfor a ticket information. After the show,

(05:09):
you guys all leave the stage,I mean, women go absolutely bananas
for you guys there. What's theafter party like? Well, we always
come out to We always come outto say hi to everybody, We take
pictures. We love meeting the fans, and we love, you know,
making sure that everybody had a goodtime and getting to meet people. So

(05:30):
we always come and say hi.You know, I have a pretty strict
regimen myself because I have to reallymake sure that my voice is you know,
staying healthy and that I can singthese songs night after night after night.
But I'll just say that a coupleof my boys in the band,
they tend to party. They theylike to go out and have drinks after
the show and mingle with people, and and so there's always a chance probably
for a yachte crueman sighting at alocal bar or something right after the show.

(05:58):
How did like tell me about yourfirst show? You're like, all
right, guys, here's what we'redoing. We're gonna cover a lot of
songs from like Toto and Sticks andyou know, boss gags, and we're
gonna dress like guys who are ona yachting crew. I mean, because
it didn't start in a big threethousand plus arena like Steelhouse. I mean,
you guys had to like take thestage at a local community center and

(06:21):
do this for thirteen people and think, well, it's got to start somewhere.
How what was that first show?Like? So, it was at
a little bar called Still Water inDana Point, California. That was our
first show. And you know, the good thing was that this is a
music bar, you know, soit's got like a match of like three

(06:43):
hundred people maybe four hundred people thatcan fit into it, but it's got
a really good local following. Theyknow that there's good music. You know,
they're good at procuring artists for it, and so that we had that
going, you know, going withus when we ended this situation. But
we you know, you still neverknow as an artist. You never know
if people are going to like whatyou do. And so I remember,

(07:04):
you know, I think we're alla little bit nervous, you know,
and it's kind of a bold thingthat we did. And really the biggest
thing for me was like, Igotta let people know that, like we
take the music seriously. You can'tplay this music and and not really play
it one hundred percent like accurate, because it's just there's going to feel like

(07:27):
something missing, you know what Imean. And we all knew that in
the band, and so we rehearsedfor months and months and months before our
first show, and I just knewthat as a lead singer, I had
to give it my all. Ihad, you know, I had to
basically, like, you know,be Freddie Mercury of Yacht Rocks. And
luckily that's what I love to doand that's what makes it fun. And
I think about the third song, you know, we definitely got some looks

(07:49):
like what the heck am I seeingwhy are these guys dressed like yacht captains
and you know, singing Christopher Cross. By about the third song, they
were hooked though they they got it. They were on board punintended. And
that's kind of how it's been everytime we come to a new city and
people don't really know what we do. By the end of the night,

(08:11):
we've made fans for life, andand that's really our goal. I just
wish I could have been there forthe pitch, Like, all right,
guys, you know the village peoplenow they all dress like different characters.
We're all gonna dress like the samecharacter. Let's go. We're all gonna
be the hot captain. Which whichcover song didn't make the cut? You're
like, you know, I wantto do this song. I don't know
if it's yacht rocky enough. Likedo you have fights within the band as

(08:33):
to what song you can or can'tdo? Yeah, I mean not fights.
We have. We have discussions. You know, we're all we're all
on the same team. Ultimately, the audience decides, you know, for
us. I mean there are evensongs that are like one hundred percent yacht
rock that we we don't play becausein a live music setting, you just
lose the crowd. You can feelpeople lose lose interest. One of my

(08:56):
favorite songs is so Into You,and that's song just never translated. We
had that in for like the firstfour or five months and it just never
took off. People would just likeleave and go get drinks because it's it's
a great song, but it's justkind of a slow groove and it doesn't
it doesn't really go anywhere. It'sgot a great melody and great lyrics and

(09:16):
all that stuff, but you know, so we had we had to pay
attention to how the audience were responding, and that's how we've you know,
built our show over the years. You know, I'm a big fan of
like, you know, Huey Lewisthe Power of Love. Yes, And
some people go, that's not reallyyacht rock, but you know what,
the crowd goes nuts for that song. Oh yeah, we don't play it

(09:37):
that often. You know, we'resparing about mixing in songs that are not
like, you know, full steamahead yacht rock. But yeah, every
once in a while we'll we'll tiptoeoutside of the genre, but it's done
a song that we know that peopleare going to love anyway, dude.
I I love what you guys aredoing, and I've heard great things about
the show, which has been inOmaha now at least a couple of times,

(10:00):
and coming back here to the Steelhouseon Friday, June twenty eighth.

Philly Ocean lead singer a Yachtlee Crewe, we ask our favorite guests on the
program to say a line for usthat we feels the best thing to hear
first thing in the morning. Wouldyou do us the honor of saying,
good morning, honey, I madeyou pancakes for breakfast. Good morning,

(10:24):
honey. This is Philly Ocean andI made you pancakes for breakfast. I'm
guessing those are incredibly delicious pancakes outthere. They smell like the sea.
All right, Phil, I cangive it to my wife. Okay,
yeah, absolutely, I'll help youout any way I can. Man,
Thank you very much. We'll seeyou in Omaha this summer. Thank you,
guys. There is Philly Ocean ofYachtlee Crue here on eleven ten kfab

(10:50):
Scott Boyes News Radio eleven ten KEYFAB, there's Lucy Chapman. I am Scott
Voorhees. Great to have you withus on news radio e KFAB. If
you were in Southwest Omaha over theweekend and you saw like every cop in
the world converging on an area nearabout one hundred and ninetieth in Giles,

(11:11):
it's because there was a house partywith about one hundred and twenty five people
and a lot of them apparently gangmembers with guns in a rather sleepy Southwest
Omaha neighborhood. We'll talk with oneof the neighbors of this party that got
busted and you're like, well,it was prom this past weekend. This
wasn't a prom party, this wasthis was something else. So we'll hear

(11:37):
more about that coming up in aboutthirteen minutes from now. Yeah, it
was prom this past weekend. Andmy little girl. And I know,
every time I talk about my daughter, who's seventeen year old junior in high
school, now, I get peopleemailing going, I remember when she was
born and you announced it on theradio. Yeah, so do I And

(12:01):
I also can't believe that it's beenseventeen years since then. But yeah,
she went to her first prom overthe weekend, and I feel bad for
Lucy. Why, well, it'snever easy to be someone who's a little

(12:22):
different from everyone else. I'm sureyou know that. Yeah, well it's
not easy. I mean, shewas one of the few people who went
to her school's prom who wasn't withher a teacher, like she went with
a classmate, and most of herother classmates went with one of their teachers.
So you know, you get madefun of a little bit like,

(12:45):
oh yeah, too good for thefaculty, you know. So it's it's
tough. It's a hard thing. It is. Well, I think many
of us have seen this. Someonesome neighbor has a little party. First
thing you think is how come Iwasn't invited? And next thing you no,
cops are just pulling gang members andguns out of the place. You
go, oh, how come Iwasn't invited? This past Saturday night,

(13:07):
a party near one hundred and eightyninth and just north of Giles, got
a little out of hand. Onehundred and twenty five people at a house
party. That's where is everyone parkfor? One hundred and twenty five people
got a little loud and sorry, this crowd wherever they want, right,
Yeah, Sarpy County Sheriff's Office founda crowd of about one hundred and twenty

(13:31):
five people estimated to be mostly betweenthe ages of eighteen and twenty five,
at the residence, which has ahistory of being used as an air B
and B. Air and B andB says we don't promote large house parties.
The guy who uses this property asause party says, I beg to
differ. So police start pulling peopleout of there, including a lot of

(13:52):
guns and drugs. Ten people arrestedand many have known gang as. So
were these underage kids eighteen to twentyfive? Underage for alcohol, yes,
in many instances, under age forbeing able to have some of the guns,

(14:16):
a lot of different issues. Soclearly they know who rented the B
and B. Clearly they do.And what's it like though, to live
on the street in this neighborhood.I don't want to say, you know
exactly because I don't know exactly wherethis guy lives. But he joins us
now and you might understand how hewishes to remain anonymous on this one.

(14:39):
So caller X, thank you verymuch for joining us here. On eleven
ten kfab thank you for having me. You're in you can see this lean
too from your lean to am Iright? Yes, So what did it
look like on Saturday night into pastmidnight on Sunday morning? Well, I

(15:01):
got home about ten forty five andit dan, it looks too bad.
You know, it looked like maybethirty to fifty people and you know,
had a little house party. Andthis think the first time this house has
had parties. It seems like it'sa weekend deal. Really how long?
How long has that been going on? The first one that we recognized was

(15:22):
around Christmas time. This house hasbeen AIRB, B and D probably since
last fall, and so like aboutevery weekend or so, suddenly there's a
group of people there. It doesn'texactly I mean, has has it gotten
to what you would say is outof hand, whether or not the police
have shown up before I've had thepolice. This was the third time I've

(15:50):
had them breakup parties out in thearea due to either just loud noises or
street racing down the street the mainstreet where this house is located. You
know, maybe one speed bump, but it's the main road, but mainly
just a lot of people, alot of cars on the street and just

(16:11):
loud noises at you know, oneone in the morning, which is about
what time this party on Saturday nightgot out of hand. I am loving
my neighbors more and more as youtell this story. What a nightmare.
So this is you think about thethird time since this past winter that you've
called or you've seen police called.Uh, do you have any idea whether

(16:33):
it's the same person or a groupof people who are rending this place out
as an Airbnb throwing these parties.Because if this guy knows that his party,
if it gets a little big andnoise, he's going to get out
of hand and get the police called. And he continues to do it,
he's an idiot. Well, sofrom my understanding, the person that actually

(16:56):
owns the house doesn't even live inthe state, doesn't even live in the
country. He has a third partythat rents the house out on Airbnb,
Verbo, booking dot com. Airbnbcame out said they won't advertise this housing
on their site anymore. We theneighborhood Homer's Association, they sent letters and

(17:22):
to Verbo, to booking, bookingdot com. There's nobody you can get
a hold up to report this, and Verbo is ignoring everything. Well,
I have a hard time holding theseparticular booking sites accountable. I mean you
no, I'm not. I'm not. I'm obviously the person that's booking it

(17:42):
or is putting it on the websiteadvertising this resident as Airbnb, a rental
home, haad deal, a shortterm lease. Obviously he's the one to
blame. Yeah, what do weknow about it? What do we know
about him? Last night? Ipersonally don't know anything about him. I

(18:03):
heard that from the sheriff's report. They found out who it was, and
he's been cited for the party atthat residence. But if you look,
we had a meeting last night withHua and other residents and they were showing
how this resident hasn't booked up everyweekend till summer. And the problem that

(18:30):
I'm going to run into here isnext month you have high school graduations,
high school parties, summers. Youknow, school's out. You know,
we all can be home all thetime to know what's going on over there,
especially when there's you know, littlekids that are out of school,
you know, trying to play inthe play in the new yard, playing

(18:51):
the street. We don't know what'sgoing to happen over there. But that
house is booked up every weekend fromhere was the last night the end of
juil as booked. That house isbooked every night for collegual series and Scott,
I've had parties or I've had peoplehave parties at that house that no

(19:11):
one's called the cops too. Youknow, there's never there's been times there.
You know, there's been college kidsover there. Never even see them,
never even heard them. Very respectfulpeople, but obviously at twelve forty
five, when you have fifty peopleout in the street and a big commotion
going on, you know, youJohn touched yourself, the cops are going

(19:32):
to get called, and cops arecalled. Past this past Saturday night,
just past midnight technically Sunday morning, and Sarpy County said about one hundred and
twenty five people, mostly estimated betweenthe ages of eighteen and twenty five,
fifty people inside the residents with drugsand guns. According to the Sarpy County
Sheriff's Office. The story here fromk e TV News Watch seven. The

(19:56):
SWAT team got called out. Crisisnegotiation teams helped with the release of people
inside the residents. Ten people arrested, guns, drugs, empty alcohol bottles.
I'm guessing that just you had toprobably call a snowplow out to get
those empty bottles of fireball shooters outof the neighborhood. And I don't know

(20:17):
about you, man, but thereare people live on the street, They
got kids in this neighborhood. They'retrying to get some sleep. This was
a nice neighborhood and it is exceptfor one house apparently once in a while.
How do you guys manage this andtalking to each other, going out
and watering the marigolds and talking aboutthis crazy phenomenon on your street or in

(20:38):
the neighborhood. Oh, right now, we're talking with and we're trying to
put something together where we can banshort term leaches in the neighborhood. I
heard Rosie talking about this this morningwith his residence and whatnot. But there's
actions that we're trying to tay.But as of right now, it's more

(21:00):
of now because of last Saturday, and it's like last night. You know,
with how close I am to thisresidence, I see it more often
than you know, three blocks down, two blocks down knows what's going on?
And now with what happened last Saturday. It seems like everybody in the
neighborhood is aware of this house, and everybody has their eye on it.

(21:22):
So hopefully just that alone will bringenough awareness to you know, you see
something, say something, you know. I've gone over there many times and
I've had I personally have had thesheriffs come out to this house in the
afternoon to get people out of thishouse during the day on a weekend.

(21:44):
So it's more a of a youknow, see something, say something,
you know, and not waiting untilone third in the morning when there's one
hundred and twenty five people outside causingproblems. This happened to near one hundred
and ninetieth and Giles. We're talkingwith one of the neighbors of this house
party that was busted this past weekend. You don't sound like the kind of

(22:07):
person that's just constantly peering through theVenetians going I don't like their camper.
You know, you you sound likesomeone concerned about you, your neighbors,
you're any family that you got therein the area. Are you concerned at
all? I mean, especially whenthey're talking about armed gang members being pulled
out of there. Are you concernedat all that someone's gonna find out you're

(22:30):
the one calling the cops on thiscrazy party and there might be some reprisal.
You worried about that. I mean, honestly, there's a little concern
about it. But you know,my main concern, you know, isn't
about me. My main concern isabout the kids, the little ones running
around like you said. I mean, you know, I had there were

(22:52):
neighbors that were the I want togive a shout out to all the law
enforcement. They were off. Theywere great, they did a great job.
Super proud of them. Couldn't behappier for law enforcement in the area.
But you know, they were stagingthese these people that they were pulling
out of the house and driveways, and the neighbors you know, are finding

(23:17):
country band and their driveways next morningthat they got to clean up. Well,
those people have have kids, youknow, And I'm scanning my yard
for you know, contraband, andthen I go make, you know,
mow my yard you know, alittle shorter and see if I see anything
because you know, those pets, kids and all that stuff. So I'm

(23:38):
not too concerned about me, butit's just all the little well there's a
lot of little kids in the area, have great neighborhood. It's great people,
there's never any problem, it's veryquiet. So that's my that's where
my con turn of my focus isat. Since this is happening about every
weekend, when was the last timethat you went to bed on a Saturday
night? Maybe you know watching Irecommend The Full Swing on Netflix about PGA

(24:04):
Tour Professionals, such great programming, the new comedy special from who the heck
did I just watch? All right, I'm turning into my dad, who'd
we watch? Honey? What wasthat thing we watched with that guy in
it? Oh? David Tail's gota new comedy special on Netflix. So
you watch a little something on TVand you lay your head on the pillow
at the end of a Saturday night, when's the last time you got what

(24:26):
you would consider to be a goodnight's sleep? Because you've got to be
wondering, is this the night whereit's gonna all go down on the street
again? Well, I, honestly, my wife will tell you. As
soon as my head hits that pillow, I'm out, So I have no
problems following asleep. But yeah, honestly, during the day. I tend

(24:49):
to know when something's going to happenat that house by the activity going on
during the day, how many carsare showing up, what's being brought into
the house, if I'm outside doingyard work. But this last Saturday,
I was at home, but Ihad somebody else tell me that, hey,
watch this house tonight. I thinkthere was going to be a big
party. And so I got homethat night and like I said, about

(25:15):
maybe twenty fifty people, and thenwithin an hour it turned into one hundred
and twenty. And that's when shortlyafter that, you see sheriffs coming down
the street and you see people running, and you see a mob start surrounding
sheriff's deputies, and then you startseeing able one and it was crazy.

(25:37):
I finally went to bed that nightat five point thirty in the morning,
and Swat was still having people comeout one by one. I stopped counting
at thirty five people coming out ofthat house. And when I woke up
at ten o'clock, tow trucks alreadycame and gone got rid of all the
vehicles in the street. And thenthe third party person or whatever it had

(26:03):
somebody at that house cleaning my houselater that day. Good luck with this
going forward. I can't even imagineappreciate you telling us about it. Near
one hundred and ninetieth in Giles inSarpye County. That is anonymous caller x
