(00:00):
Scott Vordiez yesterday on the show, had a chance to talk with and I
always I geek out so much talkingto the WWF superstars of the eighties.
The Honky talk Man was on theshow yesterday because next weekend Friday through Sunday,
June twenty eight through the thirtieth,he is among those appearing at OCON,
the Omaha Comic Con, the Oconexpoonline at theoconexpo dot com at mid
(00:25):
America Center, Council Bluffs next week. Honky talk Man is there. Michael
Rooker from Guardians of the Galaxy andThe Mississippi Burning, a lot of other
films. He's there, But ohmy gosh, there is one guest who
is going to be there that allthe other people who are guests at the
Comic Expo are going to be like, how come no one's at our table?
(00:49):
Who's that lady? That's Teresa Cassidy. Oh my gosh, And that
is so flattering. That's Teresa Cassidyright there. That is me. Yeah,
No, I'm nervous. So it'slike we're having a you should you
should be I'm always nervous because here'swhat's going to happen. It's going to
be a lot of guys who arenow about my age. Yeah, okay,
(01:10):
when we were yeah, those ofus in our mid to late twenties.
So, yeah, those of uswho when we were kids, we
were somewhere suspended between you know, lollipops and teenage Ninja Turtles. Yeah,
teenage and all the feelings of adolescents. We were kind of suspended between those
(01:32):
two worlds. We were writ inthe throes of adolescence. Sure, and
do we turn on TV to watcha cartoon and there's this cute little thing,
the Fox forty two Kids Club Girlfrom Win to Win. Well,
it was you know, mornings duringthe cartoons, which you know, started
at like seven because we want toget you eating your cereal in front of
the TV. I did, Butafternoons were really my heyday, from like
(01:56):
three o'clock until five o'clock and backthen because there was really no cable,
we were the only show in townand Mutant Ninja Turtles were on in the
afternoon. When I started the FoxKids Club, and that thing was like
doing double digit ratings. It wasbananas. What timeframe we're talk about?
What years ago? Okay, soit had been nineteen ninety through about two
(02:20):
thousand, so what yeah, Iwas on ten years. It was more
like ten and a half. AndI'll tell you I'll never forget my first
promo because I was like, well, well, Michelangelo's coming to town the
Ninja Turtle. Yes, it wasreally a suit in a box, right,
So Michelangelo and I was like, well, let's take him down to
the Central Park mall and we wereskipping and sitting on the bench having a
(02:46):
little chat. And so when wedecided let's go to HIV and Council Bluffs,
I didn't realize that we had causeda sensation. People were like,
she knows, unnern Dger. Ishow up to the Hive and Council Bluffs
by myself with this guy in asuit, and there were five thousand people
(03:07):
ready to see us. No barriers, no stansion, no lines, just
me running down the frozen food aislegoing what was I thinking? Like Beatlemania
for a teenage mutant Ninja Turtle andthe Fox forty two Kids Club Girl.
Yes. Yeah, so that waslike my start, the start of my
(03:28):
career there, and I thought, okay, we're onto something. And I
grew that program to be the tenthlargest kids club in America. How great
is it that we have been alivein the time that we've been alive,
Because if they were to try anddo that now, I don't know if
you deal with some of these snotnosed kids that are out there right now,
(03:49):
but they rarely sit down and watchany TV when it's on live right
you know, they'll watch it ontheir phone or some sort of device or
stream it at their convenience. Andusually when they're kind of watching it,
they're paying attention to something else goingon on their phone. Yeah, and
they got like a headphone on.They're talking to their friends and all this
stuff, and they're just throwing downMonster energy drinks and vaping marijuana. I
(04:14):
mean, it's it's the full experience. Whereas when we got out of Bloomfield
Elementary School mm hmm, we hadto go home and watch duct Tails,
sure, and then then we'll goback outside and play. And so,
I mean it was just part ofwe wanted to have this shared experience,
and you were there guiding us throughit. You were like the DJ Kid's
(04:35):
cartoons of kids cartoons, g IJoe, Teenage Mutant, Ninja Turtle,
Transformers, Ducktails, X Men,Spider Man, Warner Brothers, Batman,
Animaniacs. We can forget Tiny TuneAdventures and then Power Rangers. Oh my
goodness, No, it was appointmenttelevision. To your point, you just
(04:59):
sat down because otherwise you missed it. I don't even know if they had
DVR back then. No, wellhad we had one of those old VCRs.
It was the size of a buick. Yeah, you know, and
you'd record over you know. YourDad's like, this is I recorded the
nineteen eighty six Masters Jack Nicholas wonat the age of forty six. This
is the story. Don't record overit. And I'm like, yeah,
but I want to watch Police Academythree over and over again. So there
(05:23):
it goes. Record over it ona VCR tape. Sorry dad, But
yeah, it's really changed so much. And also we were pre social media.
I didn't even have a website.That's what it's a website, right
exactly, And so you know,in some ways, I'm like, oh,
thank goodness it was pre social mediabecause I don't I didn't have stalkers
(05:45):
out there like trying to capture medoing something that you know, of Yeah,
I was really good you never knewI was there. Well, you
were more like like in your facestalker. I was like, Scott boh,
he's is my official stalker I've made. I did freak out a little
bit in nineteen ninety seven or somethingwhen I had a chance to meet you
at a thing somewhere and I waslike, oh my god, I know.
(06:08):
And now you're just like, oh, Teresa is coming to this studio
whatever. I'm cool about it.I'm chill about it. But then you
got people like Gary Sadlmayer going byhere and looking out. He was kind
of leering at you, and You'relike, you're a zoo animal in here
behind glass. Gary just comes byso well. I mean, did those
twelve year old kids who were, you know, in the throes of adolescence
(06:30):
come up and be like, hey, mama, you got a little bit
of just something that's just all right? Yeah, oh yeah, I got
a shwin Well, I see.And it was back in the days of
a male I would get letters fromkids where they would say things that I
was like, did you have supervisionin the room? No. I mean,
I'll tell this one story because thiskid wrote all list of all of
(06:55):
his girlfriends and then he drew aspur and he wrote, my sperm is
swimming to your egg. That isactually a really good line. It works.
How long have you guys been goingout? Anyway? He signs the
letter and it's addressed, and soI wrote him back and Josh, you
(07:20):
need to know the time and place. So he got his first lesson in
like social decorum. Yeah, thatwas that one was funny. I also,
you still have that letter? Iprobably do. I have love to
contact. Let's get him out atthe Omaha Coma Con expone next week.
(07:41):
That would be awesome. I alsogot a letter from a kid once.
He simply wrote kids club sucks witha smiley face and the tongue hanging out.
And I was like, I amso sorry if we did something to
offend you, and he's like,he wrote back like we had a course
respondence. He's like, oh no, in fact, can I get a
(08:03):
T shirt? That's awesome? Ohthe days. We invited our listeners on
the new rock alternative one to onenine the Edge to design one of our
Edge Fast T shirts, and weof course chose some really cool design that
someone done, but the best onewith some kid just did a stick finger
stick figure flipping the bird, andit says if you don't listen to the
(08:24):
edge, you suck. So wemade t shirts out of that just for
the staff members, which I stillhave. So that's awesome. Male correspondence
was great back in the day.Now I only get it from correctional facilities.
Huh. It's flattering, more alongthe lines of manifesto than fan mail.
But they never did it. Rememberthat, they never committed the time.
(08:45):
No, it's my job to exoneratethat. Yes, yeah, I've
gotten several people off death row.I mean that's you know, it's a
hobby. Teresa Cassidy's with us here. How was it that you came to
be the Fox forty two Kids Club? Girl? Think about that answer.
We'll come back in just a moment. Scott Boyes News Radio eleven KFAB reading
(09:05):
here in the Zonker's custom woods inbox. Mark email Scott at kfab dot com
and says, I was in mylate twenties when Teresa Cassidy was on the
Fox forty two Kids Club and Ihad a crush on her. Would she
be interested in dating a doctor Istill go to medical school. That is
from Mark, And then he drewa picture of a sperm. Would you
(09:28):
get fan mail from guys who arelike, look you, what you need
is I'm in my seventies and Ilove watching Mighty morphin Power Rangers, and
I just think you're the best.Would you get letters like that from No?
In fact, you know it's funnybecause when I see it like a
fan email, I'm assuming that that'sreal. You didn't make that up.
(09:48):
I made up the last line.Year, Oh well, you buger.
I always thought, okay, noone can like see me that way,
and you know, still here Iam. I'm not going to say how
old I am, but older,I'm still single. I just think I
don't know. I don't know whatit is about that law of attraction quick
(10:11):
tutorial. If you're a guy andyou watched Teresa and you had a crush
on her as the Fox forty twoKids club girl back in the day,
do you want them to admit thatto you or is that like a nope,
this is getting weird. I'm out. No, I want them to
like say that because it's super flattering. Put you on a pedestal, Okay,
no, all right, no,not a pedestal because you always fall
(10:35):
down from the pedestal. Trust me, you couldn't. But I don't want
somebody who thinks they have to outcoolme because I already don't think I'm cool.
So you've already outcooled me. You'reat the Omaha Comic Connexpo next week.
It doesn't get more cool than that. You're gonna be there next to
Michael Rooker, Renee Quigley, thescreen queen, I know, honky tonk
(10:56):
Man WWF wrestler. Yeah. Ijust asked before we went to break there,
how did you come to be theFox forty two Kids Club girl?
Because you don't have really this,I mean today, you'd be like a
TikTok or YouTube channel star. Sure, sure, Well, I worked for
the station for two years and Iwas like a promotion editor and writer.
So I was writing all the voiceoversand editing movie promos and just doing general
(11:22):
advertising for the station. You mightremember this is when it was KPTM,
not a Fox affiliate. So Istarted working there in nineteen eighty seven when
we were just John Wayne movies inprime time. What's UHF? Yeah exactly,
and you had to have a loop. And then we got Fox and
then we got NFL, and youknow we were on the map. So
(11:46):
I was there for two years. They sent this kit and said, you're
going to start your own kids club. So it was going nationwide. Every
station could start their own version ofthis Kid's club to you know, wrap
around kids cartoon uns. And thestation manager came to me and said,
we want you to have this.He said, I you have an impish
(12:09):
quality that I think people will beattracted to. And you're like that.
I was like, oh, Kimnever been called an imp but all right,
we gotta we gotta wrap this uphere, we gotta wrap it up.
I know it does, but you'vedone radio. You know I'm not
going to do it. Okay.Theoconexpo dot Com in America Center next Friday
(12:31):
through Sunday. You're there all threedays. You're there on Saturday and I
think I'm doing a little Q anda panel. I don't know what time
I wish I did or I wouldtell you, but I will be there,
okay, yeah, Saturday. Onlyit says right here, okay.
And then I'm gonna sell my myCDs. You know, I have a
children's CD called I Wish I Wasa Fish. I'm going to sell those
(12:52):
and all the proceeds are going togo to make a wish. I thought
I could do something good for anorganization him while I'm there. So if
you come and you meet me andyou want to autograph, you buy a
CD will make the world a betterplace at the same time next weekend Friday
through Sunday. But you're there, weepy when you see me Saturday only in
(13:13):
America Center, Council Bluffs next Saturday. Yes. Theoconexpo dot com for all
the details. Teresa Cassidy, Iadore you. Thank you so much for
hanging out. Likewise, thank you, Scott. Scott Foryes Mornings nine to
