Speaker 1 (00:01):
And Amanda jam Nation.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Our next guest has been on our TV screens for
over four decades, easily becoming one of Australia's most trusted journalists.
She's reported on leaders, on politicians, on heroes and villains
across the globe. But today she's uncovering what she says
is the hardest story to tell, and that is her
own story.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Liz Hayes, Hi, Hello there, Hello, are you look at you?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
You didn't want to be a part of the story,
but here.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Oh I'm all nervy now. Oh terrible.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
How did you find it? Because there's so many amazing
stories in your book about your adventures with sixty minutes
when you're on the Today Show, that people you've met,
but also you have to tell your own story about
your relationships and your family.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
How did you find all of that?

Speaker 1 (00:47):
It was tough because my family have been my backbone.
But also everybody knows, you know, I've tried love a
few times and I know it just kind of cut
across my work and it just had to be included.
I guess it's not a tell all, but it is.

(01:07):
I think it helps complete who I am.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
It is you have been very frank about it as
part of you. It's part of your life.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
There's a bit in the book where you say three
marriages in a decade. That's like, I know, it's quite extraordinary.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Does that you've said, Liz that you said it can
cost you when you choose a life of adventure. What
do you mean by that?

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I think you have great ideas and thoughts and perceptions
of yourself and then you find yourself knee deep in
it and think, what the hell is this adventure? I mean,
this is just it can be really confronting to realize
you're actually a coward, to find out that you're you know,

(01:52):
you're not as brave as you hoped you would be.
You're more emotional than you thought you would be. But slowly,
but surely, I guess you learned to man up, if
I can use that term in this day and age.
But you just just have to find it, I think,
and that's probably what I did do. Mysel went on.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
One thing I found curious in the book that Bob
Hawk asked you for a weekend up on the Gold Coast.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
M Well, that is curious and curious to me too,
And of course it comes off off the end of
my marriage to John Singleton. So of course that for
me was most peculiar because that were great mates. And
in my time with John Singleton, I interacted with Bob Hawk,

(02:36):
but I had no idea and you know, I couldn't
quite fathm it where this invitation would come from. So
it was it was really a bit unsettling.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Really, Yeah, well it would be because he was married
at the time.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Wasn't he? Well was he?

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Maybe?

Speaker 4 (03:00):
But maybe Liza was totally just innocent. Maybe it was
just to go up and see movie world.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
And you know, you're right, You're right.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
I got it wrong, you know, I just went to
the dark side.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
You that's all. That's such a Liz, That's a Liz
Hayes move, right, Liz.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
You've met so many incredible people, from Afghani warlords to
famous movie stars. Who was the most charismatic that you
ever met, even if they were baddie Who had the
most charisma oozing out of them?

Speaker 1 (03:32):
I must say Dustin Hoffman. He had this extraordinary manner
about him, which was, you know, he was quite a flirt,
but very funny, you know, and I was surprised by that.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
But he loved you.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
He didn't. He wouldn't go home, and his minder had
to sort of try and cries him from the room.
But you know he said, no, you go, I'll hang
around to take you to the Gold Coast. Actually I
hadn't even thought of that, but yes, you know, he
managed to surprise.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
Me on nothing because you had Russell Brand and recently
he's been in. When you say you had Russell Brand,
you interviewed Russell Brand. But as you said in the book,
you were fifty six at the time, and that was
part of his stick undoing your brass trap, which which
sounds terrible when you say it just like that, but
it was part of his of a time.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yes, look, that was a real conundrum for me facing
that story in the light of today. What we all
thought we saw and what I did feel at the
time was that this was the guy being him outrageous
and behaved so in front of the cameras. But you know,

(04:50):
when the cameras were off, he was a complete gentleman.
In the light of allegations. What can I say exactly, Well.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Do you remember the first story you ever did for
the Manning River Times.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
I can't remember exactly the first one, but there's some
that oh well, I was sent to court. Actually I
was sent I've never been at a courthouse in my life.
And Kenny Maxie at It too sent me off to
the court to cover the court of petty sessions. And
the only thing, only advice he really gave me was,
you know, I don't forget to bow. I had no

(05:24):
idea what he meant.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
What did mean?

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Well, you know when you go in and the magistrate
comes out, everybody rather than bow. Yeah, and I just
walked and started bowing to everybody.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
And I like Amanda's being all coy about it, as
if you don't know what it's like the face of
judge my breaking enters.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Liz, this is a great book. And I just love
seeing you on Telly. I love I love what you
Want to Under Investigation, the TV show that is not
Liz Under Investigation.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
And the New Men, and the new book is out.
I'm Liz Hayes. It's out now, Liz.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Thank you, Oh look, I thank you both so much.
It's you know, it's really one of those difficult things.
And I'm you know, selling yourself is really tough going,
I got to say, so. I appreciate it greatly.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Liz, you are so interesting and so lovable. It's the
easiest thing in the world for us to do.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
And thank you, thank you,
