Speaker 1 (00:00):
New Jersey and Amanda jam Nation.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's twenty one past day, Midnight or a front man.
Peter Garrett has a new solo album. It's called The
True North. My favorite track from the album it's this one.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
It's called Permaglow.
Speaker 4 (00:13):
No Nice, It's kind of great.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Who are joins us right now?
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Hello Peter, Hey, good morning everyone, So nice to see you.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
Do you feel guilty with the rest of the band
when you say I'm going to do a little side project.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
No, not in the least. Now. Look, I think it's
incredible that you've just got music in you. And even
when you're in a band like The Oils, people would
go off and do their own thing, and lots of
other bands people do it. In my case, it's a
little surprising. I think I just created some space for myself,
got a little bit of away from other things that
take up my time, politics or environment or whatever, and
(01:02):
just let the stuff happen. And lots of stuff happens.
So when lots of stuff happens, you've got to catch
those magic moments and make a record.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
And that's exactly that I was watching that We Are
the World documentary. Have you seen that? Actually?
Speaker 1 (01:14):
I have, and you featured completely forgot I pop up
at the very end.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, because you're at the Grammy Awards when Lionel Richie's host.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
The Music Awards. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. The American Music
Awards were a really big deal in the day, and
we were just starting to break through in the States,
and they said, do you want to come and you know,
announce it, make a little speech into all that stuff.
Normally would say no, and we thought, why not. We'll
get I'll get up and I'll give it to the
President of the US. So I so I wore an
Abraham Lincoln hat with the Abraham Lincoln type jacket and
(01:47):
walked out onto the podium, you know, with everybody, those
who of the music industry of America out there, and
instead of reading my you know, hi, it's great to
be here, and you know, et ceter et cetera, I
started off, you know, dishing it to them about all
the money that was spending on new weapons, and the
whole room just went clunk. Well, yeah, well yeah, wind up,
wind up.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Off.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
It made the broadcast, so I.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Assume they did take it on the broadcast. In the
edited version, they sort of had a fiddle with it.
They sort of went across to other people. But look,
it was just me, you know, mouthing off.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
But that's hard to do.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
I feel strongly about many things, but it is hard
to just get up there and put you you dick
on the line, as they say, and just and just
do stuff like I think of like the Olympic Games
when you guys were the sorry pajamas as they were
called at the time. Like, do you ever feel when
you're about to do something like that? You think I
just couldn't be bothered anymore? Or is it always just
get scared?
Speaker 1 (02:43):
No, Look, I think it's just in our DNA. It's
in my dna. You know. I was born with that
political gene and you take those opportunities. So no, not
nervy about it. You're nervy about stuff going wrong, but
not about the actual thing.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
Do you ever get nervous before an interview? And I
can't imagine you would be queaking because Brendan Johnson in
your first radio, let's set the scene. You had done
community radio and then you.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Got your first my first gig six ka ka, and.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
You were beside yourself because you're about to interview your
hero Peter Garrett. Now, Peter, set yourself, you sphincter to
tight a tiny little bit of how that interview went.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Right.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
Now, I have the distinct pleasure of talking to mister
Peter Garrett, who is the lead singer for Midnight or Peter,
how are you this evening? Are you having a good,
good evening so far?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Well it's kind of like left an evening where I am, but.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Evening where you are.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Oh there's more, there's.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
More, Okay, Peter, this is the second final question in
this list of interrogation.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
You might call it.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Just just pretend people up here have never heard of Midnight?
Or what would you tell a person that's never heard
of Midnight?
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Or what can I expecting with them?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
I love that answer.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
And then finally there was this.
Speaker 6 (04:08):
Pet I thank you very much of the time. It's
been an experience for me. Maybe we'll run into one
another one day, I hope.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Yeah, I'm staked. And I was spaking to Peter Garrett.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Hey, nope, I for the kidnapped.
Speaker 5 (04:23):
It wasn't that with him saying it's been an experience
that could be I.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Was so nervous and I never interviewed anyone famous before
except for Carl Elliott, comedian with the banjo.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
That was the extent of my interviews. So when that
call came through, I remember just studying. I knew I Reckon,
I know everything about.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Mid No no, no, You're good like that, and.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
I just it was one of the biggest, biggest moment.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Here's my second to last question of this interrogation.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
You might say that was absolutely but you guys killed.
You came up and played in Kartha.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
We did, and that was part of the Blue Sky
Mining tour, and man, that was one of the greatest gigs.
I've seen you guys billions of time since, but that
was such a great gig.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
I think the fact that we were it's like it
is a long way away and a lot of those
people would come from mining background, you know. And Blue
Sky was a big record then and it was about
important stuff, but there was also lots of big, big bangers.
You know that you can play up on the stage.
With this album. You've worked with g Flip g Flips producer, right.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Interesting collaborations there, and Grace, your daughter was involved with
the artwork.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
She was Yeah, foundly affair and Grays and May singing
BB's with me as well.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
B BS bvs bvs BV in front of Peter.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
It's just an acronym. Another one. Martin ROSSI from Els
playing guitar and some of some really other good players
in and around Sydney. I mean, I came off the
Oils thing and because we've said, look, we're just not
going to do full time touring anymore. But it seemed
like the adrenaline tap didn't shut off, which is great.
So because it was on, I just kept on going.
(06:07):
It was like I was still at thirty thousand feet
and I was a bit surprised about it. I didn't
expect actually to go in that quickly, but there were
plenty of songs and I figured I better do it now.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Well it's as hard as well because Bades Hillman passed away.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Was exactly yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
And I guess there's no more mean, not all.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
No.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
I mean, look, Adam Entura came out and played with
us on that big run and he did a mighty job.
And I look, you reach a point where you know,
I mean, it's like the sporting person. You know, at
some point they know they're not going to be able
to get out on the field. And necessarily do it
in the same way. The old thing was so intense,
so physical, and I think to find that collective grunt
that you need to always get it over the line.
(06:49):
I mean, we could see it coming, so we thought, okay,
that's it. Now, it's the right time to really have
a respectful sense of who we are as a band.
And then in my case, it was like, hang on
a minute, maybe I've got some more to do.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
You've got more to do. I want to be here
in another thirty years.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
M Well, you're younger than me. Sa it is your
second to last question in this interior.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
At least you know what BV studs for and lot
from me. I've had a lot of bs from you.
Speaker 2 (07:23):

my mates.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Say hi to Doris too.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
By the way, we'll do consider it done. Excellent
