Kates putting in a deep late nightNighthawks style great sports talk. It's no
fun sitting around and waiting to useyour puzzo. I can see why Marky
Marcot so mad at the end ofBoogie Knights. You know what I mean,
I'm ready to work right now.I got this Poots and I want
to put it to use. Isit here and wait. I want to
work. I'm ready to work rightnow. All right, Matt, it's
(02:28):
sorry for the final hour fun fasteffects. Yeah, we're three fas fun
facts. Well, in honor ofour smoko uh, Hawaiian pizza Canadian bacon
and pineapple was invented in you guessedit, Canada, and it is the
most popular variety of pizza their however, in Canada. In Canada, however,
(02:51):
did you know after playing cheese, the most popular variety of pizza in
Australia is in fact Hawaiian. Fairenough, Well that's a Canadian get you
billion news? Yeah right, littlehigh. I mean people might call me
a hair and tank or something,but I like a Hawaiian pizza. I
(03:14):
do too. I enjoy a Hawaiianpizza especially well, no problem with it,
especially a well made one, youknow, Matt. I think we
got to pop the quirk off acrime and give away our two days stay
at the found Fame Fontaine Blue inVegas. Oh, let's do it,
the sixty seven story luxury resort inthe Las Vegas Strip. You're gonna dine
pool side oasis pool deck, sixacre pool with four bars. We're not
(03:35):
putting this person on the air becausewe don't have a lot of time today,
but we're doing the ten Vegas tripsin ten days, and it fell
to us today, Matt, inour very very sparse, desert like content
factory of great sports talk so farthis week, so eight six, six,
nine, eighty seven, two, five seventy. Let's say collar number
ten for the ten trips in tendays to the Fontaine Blue in Las Vegas.
(03:58):
I think consider it a tip ofthe CAF must to you, those
of you that were waiting with baitedbreath for the great sports talk to hit
the air. You're here straight outthe gate three minutes into the show.
Let's get oney out to the FontaineBlue and enjoy yourselves. And we'll have
another two pair tomorrow and Friday.Rogan to Roddy tomorrow. We'll do it
on Friday. All right, Matt, it's time for quick hits and enjoy
(04:19):
that trip. Congratulate hits. I'llmake it quick, y'all. Ye.
Dodgers win today, big ten tothree, gigantic back three innings of the
game. They're off tomorrow before startinga brief three game homestand this weekend versus
(04:40):
the Rockies, and then they're hittingthe Rude for a six game road trip
and the Dodgers with the sweep ofthe Mets, have people feeling a lot
better about that late May lull thatthey were into before this end of the
month was finished with a flourish.Yeah, they had the lost the first
one yesterday, it would have beenthe first six game losing streak in years.
(05:04):
And then today's win along with theother two. You combine today's win
with the losses by the Giants andPadres, and now they're back up to
six and a half ahead in theNL West. So congratulations, guys.
It's very exciting education for the Angelsyesterday. Well, actually, Matt,
no, they didn't need no educationyet. They failed. They beat the
(05:26):
Yankees of the series opener yesterday. They host them tonight at the Big A
and Anaheim, so all the mailboxheads are there looking at the missile boobs
in Anaheim. They're having a greattime, and Matt, they're going out
with my Bernie Williams Jersey. Ican't wait. It's gonna be amazing.
Well, I'm gonna wear my PaulO'Neil. I'm gonna have a meltdown.
(05:46):
I'm gonna have a meltdown in thedugout. And you know what Kates is
gonna wear? What's the brocious berociousbrocious Matt. There's some stat shakeups going
on regarding the Negro Leagues, yes, exactly, officially integrating stats from the
Negro Leagues with MLB's official records. That means Josh Gibson is now the all
time Major League Baseball leader in battingaverage. He replaces Ty Cobb. Gibson
(06:12):
also becomes a career leader in sluggingpercentage and ops that puts him ahead of
Babe Ruth. Stats on Cooperstown plaqueswill remain the same because they reflect the
information available at the time of aplayer's induction. But I guess if you
go to Baseball Reference dot com orsomething like that, you'll see Josh Gibson
and that's why they have decided tointegrate those stats. So tip of the
(06:35):
cap to Major League Baseball into JoshGibson, who many believe is the greatest
baseball player of all time. WhenMatt was told by Rodney Pete to go
back to Indianapolis, I bought anIndianapolis Clowns Negro League T shirt jersey and
still that's a true story. Tothis day, that's a true story.
(06:56):
You can go back to Indianapolis.I know how I'll commemorate this moment.
I don't know why I said,Oh my god, I have to have
this. They're the clown. It'sreally good, madd It's day twenty six
and the Lakers are still without ahead coach, but that could change soon.
JJ Reddick is starting to put togetherhis coaching staff. I guess they're
waiting until he finishes all his spenstuff with the NBA Finals. He's picking
(07:18):
guys around the league. But BaronDavis called him out on a podcast.
He had some choice words for JJReddick. We're going to talk to James
Worthy next, and this is whatBaron had to say from Crossroads High following
JJ Reddick's comments about older NBA playerslike Bob Coozy and Jerry West and how
they had to play against guys whowere like plumbers and firemen. JJ Reddick
(07:42):
had to be a plumber. Youknow what I mean. I had a
job like you did. All yougot all this free time to not be
a plumber, not be a copier, and he JJ Reddick. You ain't
Jerry West, right, you shouldhave been Jerry West heard you? Plus
all Jerry was anybody in that arecarbon news? Because what if you had
a job, Mouff, you wouldn'teven be in the league, you know,
(08:05):
yeah, Baron Davis exactly right,JJ Reddy. What if you had
to work a job and be inthe NBA get all his free time to
get better and you stuck? Youonly play defense on third down. We're
just gonna play first and second allgame. You'll never get on the field.
It's gonna have to be Well,we'll bring it up with James Worthy.
See what his response is. Maybeit's just one podcast reacting to another.
Then that podcast react to that podcastleyou download them all and everybody wins.
(08:26):
Here we go, Maybe James Worthy'spodcastable. Let's go, let's get
us in this podcast loop. Comeon, Tylo's not going to the Lakers
like Lebron wants. Like Lebron getsa new term contract that is long for
five years. Is the term seventymillion that will make him one of the
NBA's highest paid coaches. Tylu hasgone one hundred and eighty four and one
(08:46):
hundred and thirty four in his fourseasons with the Clippers, five to seventy
nine winning percentage, with the sixthbest in the NBA percentage in that stretch.
So that's pretty good. I guessright. Yeah, no salary cap
on coaches. If Balmer, who'sworth sixty billion dollars, wants to give
him, you know, twelve millionbucks a year, great or third,
(09:07):
whatever it is, fifteen million bucksa year, who cares? Get it?
When he has that? Kawhi Leonardand Paul George, they're only there
for forty five percent of the time. He's her favorite. Stat when they
do play, he's been ninety sevenand forty seven in those games. So
once they put that together, Matt, you'll see, right, you'll really
(09:28):
James, I've already been on theradio twice today, and I'm rusty,
like Rosie the Robot after a swimin the dead Sea. Uh. And
I just can't handle the Brownie Jack. I can't be. I don't want
to be wagging the dog anymore. You wag the dog. The he's staying
in. We knew that he wasgoing to go back even though he's in
(09:50):
the portal. So it's a finchcall, says says he's in and ESPN
writes, quote one of the fastestmost explosive athletes at the NBA draft combine.
Yeah, which is about right secondamongst seventy one participants in two three
point shooting drills. Congratulations, becausethat's how you play basketball. Also had
(10:11):
thirteen points in a combined team scrimmage. What about the first one? Participated
in a heavily attended prote at theLakers practice facility last week demonstrated his highlight
real explosiveness and improving perimeter shooting ability. That's all great. I heard Rich
Paul say they will not do atwo way contract, which leads you to
believe that he is going to bedrafted, and I would imagine that means
(10:33):
that he's got a promise from theLakers that if he's there at fifty five,
they will in fact draft him.Reportedly, Rich Paul said that he's
got ten team invites, but theywill not be visiting everyone because it sounds
like they're in a position of powerright being potentially drafted fifty fifth overall.
So, I mean, this isjust another piece and the Lebron runs the
(10:56):
Lakers puzzle. He's going to bea Laker ain't a complete like Plasky says.
That's right. Lebron being here becauseof week ownership and his ability to
manipulate them with Rich Paul them draftinghis son and us continually being nailed by
the King forever. The Charger signedformer Raider first round pick Alex Leatherwood,
(11:18):
who was started seventeen to twenty oneNFL games play with the Raiders and the
Bears. So that's excited. Excitingfor the old line types. Maybe I
think it's going to be uh.I was out there at practice today PI
and we didn't see any of this. But at my read into that is,
you know, you're probably going tosee what you saw at Stanford.
I wouldn't be surprised if you seesix or extra guys have an oldlignement out
there. Man, that's what theylike to do. And what do you
(11:41):
play tight end but you wear numberseventy. I'm going to show the NASCAR
news for huge Fred and Rodney podcastnews. They we did a podcast yesterday.
Matt Rogan and Rodney did a podcastyesterday. They interviewed Ralph Lawler,
and we appreciate the content on aday that nobody was on we would have
done it, but we do alot our stands. Well, they're better
than us. But you want youwant to know this the James Worthy of
(12:03):
the very next segment, What dowe want to know? Fred? Did
it? Dude? What do youdo? He put on a leather jacket
and rode his motorcycle around like therevel he is and he dropped a very
timid s bomb. Oh didd hebecause it was pot only. Yeah you
like that? S You like that? Matt? What do you think in
a very mardy morning weg like fashion? Yeah, he knew he was had
(12:24):
safe harbor. And Fred said,I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna get
outside the box that you appreciate that. Let's see Now I'm gonna go listen.
Well done, Fred, You've suckedme in. I need to hear
it. You can also podcast us, but we we got a couple more
segments. We got James Worthy nextthat you are dead and alive? Stay
(12:46):
with us? Hey, Ralph, what is this? S Petro saying many
a five seventy hell a sports LiveEverywhere on the iHeartRadio ad big win by
the Dodge earlier a three game sweepin New York. They come back three
and three on the road. Hefull show from US tomorrow, so we'll
make up for all the lost timethree to seven pm right now though,
(13:09):
James Worthy, driven by the FordF Series, America's best selling truck for
forty seven years and counting. Fordgives you the freedom of choice gas hybrid
electric. Head to your Southern CaliforniaFord dealers and find yours Ford F Series
built tough. Well, if we'renot gonna be on the radio that much
this week, at least we getto talk to this guy when we are.
(13:33):
It's great to catch up with ourdear friend. Hall of Famer Number
hangs in the rafters at All TimeBasketball g The NBA Finals are taking shape.
We lost an all time legend, and it's always great to catch up
with the one and only Big Game. James Worthy available for speaking engagements here
(13:56):
at the offseason dot com, andyou see him on Spectrum Sports at l
A and he just won an Emmyfor his great analysis. What's cracking?
James? How are you? Hey, hey, hey man, just uh,
you know, enjoying the you know, enjoying May, the May glooms,
the fog in the morning's cooing up. My golf key times. But
(14:16):
yeah, man, the playoffs,baseball starting, it's it's it's it's good.
Seems good real quick, before weget into too all that stuff.
We saw that you sent a verynice, thoughtful tweet or message about the
great Bill Walton, who seems tohave been beloved and a friend to everybody.
(14:37):
But you had some interesting interactions withhim and the NBA and the world
of sports and West Coast sports reallyfor college sports, really lost a great
one. We did a true angel, a gentle giant. You know,
a lot of people don't remember justhow great Bill Watten was as a basketball
(15:00):
player at U c LA. Iremember interviewing John Wooden earlier my broadcasting career,
and you know, he was sayingthat Bill Walton was the bet center
he ever coached, and I waslike, whoa, whoa, whoa,
whoa. Hold on, now there'sanother guy. But that's just how dominant
and how good he was through injuries. But that's not who Bill was.
(15:22):
Bill was here was a god sinwhen he was born. I think God
had a plan for him to justenroll people and change people's lives and bring
them up from the gutters and bringthem back up to like respect. He
always had like something to say thathad nothing to do with sports or basketball.
(15:45):
He had to do with life.He could read you very well.
I remember one time I had myhands in my pocket for some reason.
He just came over and just hewout asking. He just took him out
of my pocket. He hands outof your pockets, and he had some
some philosophy behind it. I metI met Bill in Alaska my rookie year
with the Lakers. Were playing theClippers in a preseason game. I went
(16:07):
down to the lobby for breakfast early, and then he invited me over to
his table. We just talked andtalked, talked about Dean Smith, he
talked about John Wooden, what itwas like growing up in the South,
his experiences of visiting the South.I mean, it was just he was
just he's going to be missed.I really loved Bill Walk We did the
Jimmy Kimball Show together, The PriceIs Right, and numerous of other appearances.
(16:33):
And you know, he never wouldlet you know how how sick he
was or you know how much painhe was in. He just lived his
life to the fullest and and justloved helping people and making them feel good
about themselves. Is it is itsafe to say, James that he was
your favorite Celtic and perhaps the onlyCeltic that you truly had love in your
(16:56):
heart for. Yeah, I wouldhave to say he he was man.
You know, I hate if wedidn't get a chance to play them in
eighty six when he had a reallygood year, sixty Men of the Year.
The only guy I saw once boughtKareem's guys up. He came from
behind when he was very athletic, and you know, he really just loved
(17:18):
teaching, you know, teaching playersand big men. He always had something
good to say. You know,I remember I was having a tough time
in the early nineties. I wasgoing through some personal stuff and he saw
me and he walked up to meand really loud, he said, James
Worthy, you have character. Youcould have you know, gone and hid.
(17:41):
You showed up for that game youplayed. You know, if everyone
makes mistakes, Stan Taul, youwere a good person. You know.
He just really was just such agood person. And you know he didn't
he didn't make excuses for you,but he would he would scald you when
he needed to tell you the truth. And then he would just like a
parent, just feal you up withlove and confidence. And he only spoke
(18:06):
the truth. And that was theone thing about Bill. You just couldn't
run from the truth. And that'swhat I loved about it. Wonderful stuff
with the great James Worthy, rememberinga Hall of Famer, a fellow Hall
of Famer, and we're grateful thatyou would come on and share those thoughts
with us. James. We've beenwaiting a few weeks here while the Lakers
are waiting. It seems if youbelieve all the reports to hire JJ Reddick
(18:29):
and he's putting together his staff rightnow. What do you think the reaction
is going to be since this seemslike it was a reality maybe a week
ago. And how do you thinkhe'll approach this as a first year coach.
We've seen it with Steve Nash andmaybe a couple other guys. Well,
it's part of the biggest challenge inLaker history as far as coaching is
(18:52):
concerned. You know, Jerry Westand Pat Rally were on the bench and
then Jerry West turned it over toPat Rowdy and that was a huge challenge,
very similar, you know, notnot not any experience, although he
has a very high IQ for thegame, and I think one of JJ's
(19:14):
biggest assets is his ability to communicateand explain things to where you can't do
anything but agree with what's true. And so I think that's that seems to
be what's needed in the NBA.Whoever con communicate. But it's going to
be a big task, and I'msure the fans are gonna be like,
Okay, every two years, we'vegot to do coach. A lot of
(19:37):
people are gonna you know, alot of people are gonna, you know,
say, not enough experience what's goingon. But I think he has
I think he has you know, pulse, so what's going on in today's
game. Not giving him any creditfor being a great coach or not even
a great basketball mind, but hedoes understand well he does a great basketball
(20:00):
mind, but it hasn't transferred tothe coaching sidelines yet so that's yet to
be seen. But I know he'sa great communicator. When he sits down
with these players, it's gonna behonest, and I think that's what players
look for. So it's gonna bea challenge. In Los Angeles, seems
like every two years we get anew coach. Yeah, so the challenge
is there the you know, youhad pat Riley for the majority of your
(20:25):
career, but after that you hadMike Dunley. The guys go to the
NBA Finals, and unfortunately it wasan injury to you that that maybe you
know, changed the outcome of howthat thing went and maybe the dynasty that
begun because of it began because ofit. Randy fun you had a couple
of interim coaches there, like, what is there one thing that is the
most especially for a first time guyand someone that's so young and so opinionated
(20:48):
and has been on network TV withall these opinions and seems to cause controversy,
What's like the most important thing doyou think for him to just kind
of get off on the right foot, consider he's gonna be a polarizing higher
honesty honesty and everybody on the teamgets the same treatment, whether it's Lebron
(21:11):
or whether it's the towel boy.And I think when you start with that
and players are looking for that, especially in the modern day game, I
hate to say it, but theylook to see if there's going to be
any partiality, if there's you know, uneven scale, the teams that succeed,
you know, everybody understands and everybodycomes on board, and the coach
(21:32):
has to he has to speak tothat. You know, if there's a
situation where you know, Lebron didn'tget back on defense or something Ad didn't
get back on, or one ofyour star players, you got to you
gotta let him have it in frontof everybody else, and that's what brings
the team together. So honesty,he's got to be. I mean,
I think he's totally prepared. Ijust knowing. You know, JJ.
(21:56):
You know, over his career he'salways been a guy who's been prepared to
play. He's also been like acoach on the floor for you know,
for for for a few teams inhis ladder in his latter year. So
but preparation, you know, understandinghow to convey a message to players and
(22:17):
hold them accountable. That's all Imean a coach, that's that's all he
has to do. Exs and o'swill come and all that, but holding
players accountable and getting the max outof them is a challenge. How you
know, he's he's like I say, he's opinionated. He's got podcasts and
you know, in order to getthose things the numbers to move, you
tend to have to say things thatmake people want to go out and hear
(22:41):
them for themselves. And kind oftook a shot at it, not your
well a little bit of your era, but also the era before yours when
he said, you know, hesaid was playing against plumbers and carpenters and
Jerry West street cleaners, and hecalled out Jerry West, and he said
that Michael Jordan played in an era, the expansion era when the league was
watered down. I mean, he'sreally kind of taken a few shots at
(23:06):
you know, the guys that playedbefore him. Just kind of your sort
of thoughts on those positions that hetook and what he thought about your era
of basketball and maybe the Bob CooseyJerry West era. Well, I never
heard that, but when you makeyou can get off on the wrong foot.
(23:26):
He gets off on the wrong footwith that kind of He needs to
stay away from that because he's noexpert, no historian of the game.
So I was kind of disappointed tohear that talking about people who never played
about played with So I'm going toleave that alone. It's bull and I
(23:48):
don't I don't even think he believesit. You know, I know quite
a few players in my era.You know, I could just start with
if he wants to go up againstlike Andrew Tony or Orlando Blackman, we
could see. So I don't know, I don't agree with that, and
that's just disappointed to hear him saythat. Well, I'm sure he'll answer
for it in the press conference andfind a way around it from the hot
(24:14):
take era of his career. GreatJames Worthy, Yeah, you have to
play against players and really know, you know how they played, and so
I don't know that's that's kind ofa shallow statement in my opinion, ours
too, Strangler choke him out.Yeah, and you know, Cornbrad Maxwell
(24:37):
is going to be upset that you'renot shooting any Celtic love toward him.
James, I can't. I'm justwaiting for him to lose. There we
go. Do you think do youthink they're gonna I mean, the NBA
Finals is kind of set, althoughwe see some death spasms from the from
the Tea Wolves. Do you thinkthat that it'll be a great NBA finals?
(25:00):
The Conference finals have been you know, a little one sided. If
it's you know, if it's Dallas, here's what you're gonna get. You
know, Jason Kidd is a greatdefensive coach. You got Luca and and
Kyrie is Key, and Luca isamazing, but Kyrie is Key and they
play a really good defense. SoBoston runs a lot of one all.
(25:21):
They run a lot of ISOs,Iso Tatum, Iso, Jalen Brown.
They get a lot of drive andkeys and stuff off of that. But
I don't think if it's Dallas,I don't think in seven games that they
can beat Dallas. It's just myopinion. I'm not I'm not being biased.
Of course, I hate the Celtics. I don't want them to win,
but but I do look at itrealistically. They're a good team.
(25:44):
But I think in seven games theyyou know, they skinked Indiana. People
forget about that. That won't happenagainst Dallas. So you know, I'm
not I'm not giving up on Minnesota. You know, no one's ever come
back from three and one. Sobut I think Jason Kidd, remember he
was a great defensive player, andwhat he's able to do against Edwards earlier
(26:07):
in that series gonna be James Worthydriven by the Ford Deaf series. He's
the best America's best selling truck forforty seven years in counting for it gives
you the freedom of choice gas hybrid, electric, head your Southern California for
dealers and find yours Ford F Seriesbuilt tough. We've waxed and we've waned.
Thank you so much for all thetime today, James, and we
(26:29):
appreciate it. Have a great night. You gotta guys have a good one.

Tenzing Norgay, Yes, sir,Tenzig Norgay would have been one hundred
and ten to day we think today. Was born in northeastern Nepal. We
think he was going to be amonk, but then was invited to join
(27:41):
an Everest expedition when he was twentyto nineteen thirty five British Mount Everest Reconnaissance
expedition. He was their high altitudeporter. They did not make it.
Three separate attempts all failed from thenorthern Tibetan side. He got married,
he settled, had two kids.Suddenly, sadly, his wife died suddenly,
so he returned to Darjeeling with histwo daughters, and in forty seven,
(28:03):
the same year part of another unsuccessfulsummit attempt of Everest. In fifty
three he was in John Hunt's expeditionEdmund Hillary seven. He was in that
team. He fell into a crevass, but was saved from death by Norgay's
prompt action in securing the rope usinghis ice axe, and that led Hillary
(28:25):
to say that will be my climbingpartner in any of my future summit attempts.
They would pitch a ten at twentyseven nine hundred feet on May twenty
eighth. Their support group retreated downthe mountain. The following morning, the
two attempted the final ascent, wearingthirty pound packs. Final part forty foot
rock face that would become named theHillary Step. They reached the summit twenty
(28:49):
nine thy twenty eight feet, thehighest point on Earth, at eleven thirty
am May twenty ninth. They spentfifteen minutes. Hillary took the famous photo
of Norgay. Of course, greatadulation in Nepal. In India, while
Hillary was knighted by Queen Elizabeth,Norgay received the George Medal from Queen Elizabeth
for his efforts, and the Kingof Nepal presented him with the Order of
(29:11):
the Star of Nepal. So Isuppose he too is Sir Tenzing. Norgay
died in nineteen eighty six at seventyone years old. Well all right,
Matt beating out our friend from aSpectrum sportsnet la Jerry Hairston Happy Birthday,
Jay Hair. This one goes outto you, Jen Xers Steve Cardinis.
(29:32):
Steve is a Porto Ricaneo. LikeSweet James, he left Texas to become
what Matt the audition a role ofa lifetime, A mighty Morphin Power Ranger.
That's right there, we go theweirdest show ever and Matt he got
(29:52):
