speak Yeah yeah yeah, tru somemoney. Hey, I'm five seventy LA
Sports Live Everywhere on the iHeartRadio appout at the Chargers Golf Tournament, the
(00:21):
annual Chargers Golf Tournament for their ImpactFund. Always love coming out. Here.
Been a great day, three hoursof great sports talk already. Uh.
One hour to go. Oh whata day. Uh. We've been
here for a while, but itfeels like we've been here for five minutes.
Man, it's been such a bangup time. But one hour to
goo. Uh and then we willhand it over to Tim Kates for off
day Dodger talk. Remember Dodgers Piratestomorrow early from the Galpin Motors Broadcast booth.
(00:46):
First pitch at four forty pm,Dodgers on deck at I should say,
first pitch at three forty pm,Dodgers on deck at two thirty.
We will be on one until twothirty. It's caught the presentation. Yeah,
oh there's I'm proud to be anAmerican, or at least I know
I'm free exactly right, it's aModello meets a lot of Monday on the
(01:07):
Petroson Money Show. Modello, it'snot a beach a lot of it's not
made with Modelo. It is areward. Do you want more? Do
you want less? I'd probably preferless. For hell, you're gonna get
more with the fighting spirit. Themark of a fighter Modello. If you
fight, Modello is for you.Don't forget. Dodgers Talk with Tim Kats
coming up at seven o'clock and withthe Dodgers on the East Coast, Matt,
(01:30):
the schedule is extremely complicated. EveryDay Tuesday, well not every day
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday one untiltwo thirty will be our show, So
be prepared for hour and a halfpodcasts and Friday Matt one to three exactly
right, that is, I mean, that's a meaty show right there.
This week one to three that hasbeen scheduled talk on the Petroson Money Show.
(01:52):
Here on this Modello meets a lotof Monday Live and now it's time
for the final hour fun fat thefact, it's the Yeah, we're three
fun facts. Well as we fancyourselves the Handyman's show of record here on
the Petros and money show. Yougotta sink something into dry wall. We
(02:12):
know all about Uh, you knowhow to do that? Well, I
put some crown molding on up thereat the ceilia and we can line that
all up. You've got a betteridea than I do. And I'm not
sure how capable Kates is, youknow we of course, No, Ronnie
and the tails of his bac.Don't sell yourself short. You know your
way around a band sander most betterthan most. Well, Matt, No,
I don't even know what that is. But I can't screw in the
(02:32):
light bulb on the heater from mylizard. And that is a handyman's short.
The hook on the end, thehook on the end of a tape
measure is intentionally loose. Why thedistance that it moves is equal to the
thickness of the hook, to takeinto account the difference between hooking the hand
(02:55):
over and pressing the hook against andobject. And that's precision. Matt's exactly
right. And if we don't haveprecision, the hell do we have?
That's why Harbaugh change a format.Today's right, let's do this right,
competition. You guys don't know howto run a golf tournament. What is
this a golf club? Come on, competition is what we're all about here,
you idiots. Now, dare youtell me how to golf at a
(03:16):
golf club? It's round one champion. A bunch of drunks comeing into this
ceremony afterwards telling me they shot eighteenunder. You're all liars and you're gonna
prove it in front of everybody's eyes. I'm just glad harbout it, and
see the ketchup on our hot talks. Yes, it's time for quick hits.
Everybody to the ms quick hits.Come make it quick, y'all.
(03:40):
Yeah. The Dodgers are thirty eightand twenty three ks has Dodger Talk at
seven. They have a six anda half game lead in the NL West.
They're off tonight. That's why theoff night Dodger Talk. They started
a three game series in Pittsburgh tomorrow. The Angels twenty one and thirty eight,
last place in the AL West. But they are learning because they've lost
(04:00):
five in a row. Well that'slike a masterclass. Well it says here
PhD in baseball education. I meanthis is like Pomona trees and degree five
straight. I mean, that's liketaking that four hour class, trees and
degrees. We lose a ball game. We got education and how education is
what it may have taken to winthat game? Wow, what does it
(04:23):
take to lose five? We needmore education. We recognize our limitations and
the liability that we are skip.So we're just gonna lose a bunch of
games, get educated, and thenyou just wait. Celtics Mavericks. What
is that tomorrow? Is that isthat Wednesday? It's amazing that it is
still It's still Thursday. Yeah,Thursday is when they will start the NBA
(04:44):
Finals, like ten days after thelast series wrapped up. To really just
seize the momentum and excitement behind aCeltic's Mavericks showdown and Matt we were told
by Don McClain on Friday that nothingreally meant, that is anyone can see,
nothing really matters when it comes tothe Lakers coach. You know they're
(05:10):
gonna hire Retick. It's been amonth, but it care obviously it's what
they're gonna do. They're gonna hireRetick and draft whoever Lebron wants. They're
gonna sign him to a six yeardeal, even though it's not allowed in
the terms of the CBA. Butit's what he wants. And uh yeah,
clutch Sport's gonna take a percentage ofthe other Lakers. That's what it's
gonna work out. It's beautiful. Now, I want you to watch your
mouth. We're gonna talk about theWNPA right now. We are, says
(05:30):
right here, we are. Youbetter watch your mouth. The ladies in
the league apparently are resentful of CaitlinClark. What where did this story come
from? Well? Over the weekend, Chicago's Kennedy Carter was called for a
foul for her shove slash push ofClark right before she said you bitch.
She did say that, yeah, and she did shove her and she did
(05:50):
get her to the floor. Thefowl was later ruled a flagrant one.
Carter refused to answer any questions aboutClark in her postgame media session, so
it's unclear what caused the incident.Carter didn't keep her silence for too long
regarding the situation. She posted acomment about Clark on social media, saying,
yesterday, ooh, that's how Ilike to communicate. Beside three point
shooting. What does she bring tothe table? Man? Is it?
(06:14):
She? I? Mean, youknow, not that I'm some sort of
WNBA expert, but I believe she'sleading the league in assists. I believe
like leading the league in assists, which would lead me to believe that you
know you're helping out your teammates, good baskets. I heard somebody say,
what does she bringing to the table, and they said the table, Yes,
that's exactly right. Well, whatabout Matt Barnes bouncing back in the
(06:35):
world of Tim Kats from his kerfuffleat Harvard Westlake. He tried to kill
that poor play by play guy,put his hand on his shoulder and said,
I will kill you. I willstick my hand down your throat.
I will pull your lungs out ofyour mouth, and you will no longer
be able to breathe. Next year, this story is going to be he
stuck his hand at a garbage disposal. The kid was terrified. It's Matt
(07:00):
Barnes on Why aren't Caitlin Clark's teammatesprotecting her? Where her teammates at,
where y'all at, Where the restof the indianaf we're at. I've seen
a couple of girls smirk when she'sgot knocked down half asked to pick her
up, like y'all supposed to protectthe asset, protect the star and all.
This is the team, she's thestar. You always protect your star.
I was someone who protected the stars. Cole cp blake list goes on,
(07:24):
I'm it's gonna be a problem becauseyou got are supposed to be a
family. And you wonder why yousit at the bottom of the league right
now because y'all don't protect each other. Man, coach, don't do about
it, players don't shoot. Y'allshould be ashamed of it. But the
rest of the league is going tocontinue to test her, and that's what
they're supposed to do. It's yourguys job to have her back and have
each other's back. Got to dobetter, ladies. That's a salient point
by Matt Barnes. Listen, there'sone thing we need to the NBA.
(07:46):
It's protectors, people that will protectthe stars. That's what we're looking for.
Yeah, we need some enforcers, exactly right. I guess Pat McAfee
had a very insightful, thoughtful, high brow common on the Caton Clark situation
that you may want to go seekingand consume. I remember it reminded me
of that line and waiting to actasyou knew it's where you were going to
(08:09):
go with it. Come on,give it to him, and I thought
about you land with a word.Larry Allen died suddenly. It was on
vacation in Mexico, fifty two yearsold. He played for the Cowboys from
ninety four to five, won theSuper Bowl in ninety five. Grew up
in CPT. Was stabbed twelve timeswill protecting one of his brothers. Four
(08:30):
different high schools, and Butte andSonoma State go cossacks. Uh. He
played a little bit at Vintage HighSchool in Napa, and a couple of
his classmates actually texted me this morningto say what a wonderful, gentle,
giant of a guy he was.He was a second round draft pick in
ninety four. Just a sad story. It's one of the great highlights in
(08:52):
NFL history, that interception. Ithink the Saints game that Larry Allen was
flat footed as the lineback was runningby him and yet then turned around,
chased that dude down and tackled himlike at the ten. It's just one
of the most incredible athletes in thehistory of the league. They always call
that the Reverse leon Let. Comingup next, we will talk to the
(09:13):
rookies. Joe Walt and Lad mcconkeewill join us in our very next segment.
We're going until seven o'clock live fromthe Chargers Impact Fund Charity Golf Tournament
here on a five seventy LA SportsPetro Some money AM five seventy LA Sports
were live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Making our way towards seven o'clock out
live at the Chargers Impact Fund CharityGolf Tournament, a new format this year
(09:37):
and individual champion will be crowned. It is all about competition in the name
of charity. That's what they didfor seven hours out on the course today.
P As we wrap things up here, celebrate a single man that is
able to raise some sort of trophyor belt and say I did it,
I did it alone. Damn it. Well, it's time to wake up
(09:58):
the echoes here at the Rolling HillsCountry Club. Because joining us right now
on the Southern California Toyota Dealer CelebrityHotline live in beautiful Rolling Hills Country Club,
a links course for the people, better members, it is the great
Joe Alt joining us right now.I'll tell you, antwe what is that
like a thirty inch waist? Thirtythree, thirty eight and they're loose,
(10:26):
still got what's your power in thatass? What's your waist? Joe,
I'm a forty four. Yeah,I don't have that. A little bit
different Chargers first round draft pick.We had him on right after draft day
and offensive tackle and here on theWest Coast, after becoming an All American
of course in the Midwest. Welcome, Welcome to California, Thank you,
(10:48):
and welcome to the Petrosen Money Showhere at the country Club. How's it
been today? Have you enjoyed yourself? You heard Matt talking about the new
format, Yeah, shock you,No, I did not shock me.
Coach balls all ball competitors, Soit was it was a great way to
kind of have a little bit ofa team aspect. But then also you're
gonna see that individual hold that trophyat the end of the day, and
I'm you know, we're gonna beexcited to see it. But no,
for me, the golf game startedoff a little shaky. My clubs are
(11:11):
back home in the Midwest, soI'm using the Reynolds from here in the
little shorts. Think I had toget used to, like a first first
iron shot. I just topped andI'm like, okay, I gonna have
to bend the knees a little bit, but we're getting better. So Derek
here, Derek runs the club.Derek, what what do you anticipate?
Is the tallest individual that would everrequire you to provide golf clubs for them?
(11:31):
Gotcha? Did you get an extenderfor a guy like this? Yeah,
it's a little bit of a toughpull. Yeah. No, I
don't expect anything special, but Iwas like a little bit, but it
was good. It's good. Dogolf? I do? Oh you do?
Okay, I'm not I'm not agreat golfer, Like I'm not going
to go out and you're gonna seeme shoot a seventy or eighty like I'm
I'm the nineties guy, that's me. But I love golfing. I have
(11:52):
really picked it up in college andwas like kind of my my summertime past
time. I was out two threetimes a week. So I love golf.
We're a couple of nine, theseguys in a different kind of way.
We tell you we before social media, no one knew where you were,
no one knew what you were doing. You could just get paid and
you could ignore it. You havetwo lives. So what is your impressions
(12:13):
of being out here working out here? Yeah, kind of being a Californian.
Is it like you thought it wouldbe? Yeah, you know,
to be completely honest, is notwhat I thought it was going to be.
You know where we are right now. I was more worried about the
transition from the Midwest out here, you know, to California. But really
hasn't been bad at all. I'vereally enjoyed my couple of weeks I've been
here so far, and kind ofthere's might These last couple of weekends was
(12:35):
my chance to venture out on myown. We're out of practice. I
had some time, so I gotto kind of see some of the places
I wanted to go look at,and I went to Newport and then I
went up to where we're gonna beup and also Gundo and looked U room
there. So looking forward to youknow, the new, new new facility
and being up there and kind offinding a spot here hopefully soon and kind
of laying my ground for a littlebit, get ice on that refinery.
Yeah. Yeah, be a assumethat you're someone who needs to eat.
(13:01):
You know, you gotta you gottamaintain. So what have you found so
far? Have you found anything that'sreally kind of like, hey, I'm
gonna eat here every day? Somethingbetter. I'm gonna be honest with you,
I would love to do that, but I have a girlfriend who also
likes to enjoy these kind of places. So I figured I'm not going to
do it by myself. I'm gonnawait for her to get out here and
kind of let her join me theseexperiences. So I've been kind of sticking
to the facility and maybe a Chickfil A here there. I'm not a
(13:22):
not a huge guy going to eatby myself. I kind of feel like,
kind of weird we're doing that,Like, hey, can I get
a table for one by myself? You get older, you really relatively,
I don't want to be with anything. I want to eat alone, stare
at my food and be left alone. I don't want to talk to anybody.
What I mean, well, well, problem is someone to look over
me. And I'm was absolutely justscarfless. We're down as fast as I
can of like what's wrong with thiskid? So I'm like, I'm just
(13:43):
gonna stay away with by myself.Yeah, exactly exactly when it comes to
the football part. And it's JoeAlt, the offensive tackle, first round
pick of the Los Angeles Chargers. Here at the golf tournament, he powered
through with the short clubs. Goodwhat he's supposed to do as a football
man. He overcame adversus what doyou do football wise right now other than
(14:03):
work out, you know, asfar as installation and that kind of stuff.
When does that happen? Yeah, and are you anxious to get into
pads? Is it like that atthe program? Yeah? Well, right
now you're kind of hit on thehead. We did a lot of lifting
and installation of the playbook, gettingused to that, get on on the
field and running some of those plays. Obviously no pads yet, so there's
not really any contact. But I'malways anxious, you know, put the
pads on. You haven't had themon in a while. But always excited
(14:24):
too, because you know, that'sthe part of football. I love the
physicality of and being hit somebody everysingle play is what I enjoyed the most.
So I'm looking forward to getting thosepads on and just trying to get
better every day. And you know, I got great guys in the offensive
line room, and then great guyson defense, We're gonna get you better
during this training camp process, andreally looking forward to just kind of taking
it one day at a time andgetting getting used to this next level.
You mentioned the guys. I don'tknow if you've noticed there's been a little
(14:46):
bit of chatter in June about offensiveline chemistry and continuity and how important that
is. Like, what are youguys doing to try to create that while
you're just kind of at OTAs.Yeah, I mean, obviously it starts
in the facility and being on thefield than the basics of football communication with
each other, you know, beforeand during plays and stuff like that,
and understand the playbook and making sureyou have your calls. You need your
(15:07):
calls, and you know, thelittle dummy calls you can make. Some
the defens doesn't know exactly what you'redoing. But outside of it is just
kind of hanging out and get toknow people on more of a personal level.
I think that's really important. Youkind of get to know where they
came from, what their values andmorals are, and then you kind of
get to learn about them and itjust kind of grows you closer to them
and kind of really makes you arespect for that person. So that's kind
of what we've been doing. Well, we've talked to him now, he's
(15:28):
been here two weeks and he doesn'thave like a leopard skin thing, big
stunner shades or anything like that.Like so far, you know, Los
Angeles is now. Yeah, you'redoing okay. You seem like you're focused,
like you're you're you're you're in You'rein a good place right now.
Yeah. No, I feel likeI'm in a good place. I don't
think you're ever gonna see me withthe watch or anything like that. It's
(15:50):
just not who I am, andno, I know, but that's what
my phone's for. It does thesame thing. So I keep a very
simplistic lifestyle, you know. Idon't need anything to kind of confuse what
I'm doing spartan leagues exactly. That'swhy I try to have you know,
I have the car to get toand from, I got a place to
sleep, I got food, andit's really all I still enjoys, you
know. I mean, do youwhat do you have any you know,
some guys, especially when it comesto great athlete like yourself, guys have
(16:15):
some outside interest Like I remember theyalways used to talk about Aaron Donald.
Oh he does crap magad or somethinglike that. Or some guys are into
wrestling. Some guys did track andfield when they were young. You know,
do you have an outside interest thatyou are that you're still into.
Yes, you like to wrestle,No, I don't. I don't like
to wrestle. My My big thingis fishing. That's always That's always been
my thing. Where I kind offishing up here, Yes, exact fish
(16:37):
I got. I got my myplan to go out here in a couple
of weeks. So my thing isalways that's always been where I kind of
mellow myself out ground myself and kindof go back and really be grateful where
I'm at. So I grew upin Minnesota fishing in fresh water. I've
spent a lot of time fishing insalt water, but never in the Pacific.
So I got a little trip, you know, getting doing open water.
You're going out, I'm gonna channelyet do it. I'm gonna try
(16:57):
it. So we're gonna see whathappens. The night on the Monte Carlo
and the first string on of twentysecond Street landing. Yeah, my cousin
used to clean the fish out there. Really gi him a good tip.
Okay, well yeah, take himbackside of Catalina. Yeah, talk about
catching some fishing eating sure, absolutely, well, shark would have to eat
the boat. I don't think youcan fit into it charts. But we
always appreciate catching up with this show. You're great. Yeah, absolutely appreciate.
(17:19):
Congratulations on everything. Thank you,and good luck finding those restaurants which
the lady gets out. Well, thank you, man. It's gonna be.
There's gonna be a tour, allright. It's get the headset off
a vault there. As we bringLadd McConkie in, we go from first
rounder to our second round selection. What would a petros In Money appearance at
the Chargers charity event be without talkingto the rookies. Yes, the thirty
(17:41):
fourth pick in the twenty twenty fourNFL draft, and you were darn excited
when the Chargers drafted this man.You started tweeting up a storm like a
sprinkler, you know, and Iwas like, damn, you know this
receiver from Georgia. Matt really likeshim. Of course we're talking about Ladd
McConkie. He is a young player, and I thought his hair was long.
You know, I thought your hairwas a little more springy and longer.
(18:04):
Obviously one of the great football playerswho created this football, helped create
and be part of this football dynastygoing on right now with Georgia and the
SEC and starting your professional career.Great draft position, great coach, great
team, A giant offensive line guystanding right there. Welcome to the show
on the Southern California Toyota Dealers CelebrityHighline. How did it go out there
(18:25):
today, Lab, Yeah, it'sbeen going good. You know, had
some good shots, some ones Iwant back, but overall is a good
day. Do you golf a lot? As? Are you into golf?
Is that a thing I tried to? But I feel like as soon as,
like, you know, we getinto camp, I can't play anymore.
So then it goes back downhill andI got you. So what is
it like here in California for you? You enjoying yourself? Is it like
what you thought it would be comingout your rookie year. Yeah, it's
(18:48):
been good, you know, beenhere for I guess going on like months
now. A little different than Georgiagrowing up there, but you know,
everyone's welcomed me. What's different aboutit? It just I feel like everything,
like you know, just like Idon't know people environment like good bad.
Yeah, no, it's good. It's good in some way. Yeah.
No, I love it. Everyone'slike you're gonna enjoy it. You're
gonna you're gonna love it when youget settled. So kind of in the
(19:10):
hotel right now. So once Iget my own, you know, own
place and all that. Yeah. No, born and raised in Georgia,
High school in Georgia. That's collegein Georgia. Like how much traveling outside
of you know, taking trips withthe football team have you done? Are
you someone that's kind of really spreadout or is this sort of a whole
new thing for you and you've coursesort of been set up in that,
you know, southeast corner of theUnited States your whole life. Yeah,
(19:33):
not too much really, you know, spring break will go to like Fenmos
City there. You know, I'msaying, like I've been on like some
cruises and stuff, but yeah, not too much, you know, not
was it always gonna be Georgia aslong as is that kind of what you
were chasing? Now? I wasa Tennessee fan, really, so I
want to go to Tennessee. Uh, didn't get that opportunity. So on
(19:53):
it worked out just out who wasthere, worked out a lot better who
was there, and it didn't giveyou that opportunity. Was due head coach.
We don't have a good concept oftime. Coach Prew is all right,
Coach Prew. Yeah, it's alittle bit for it was only ten
years after Julie was gone. Howdoes one become an exceptional route runner?
(20:15):
That's kind of what everyone talked aboutwhen you were coming into the draft.
This is the best route runner inthe draft. As soon as he hits
the NFL, he might be oneof the best route runners in the NFL.
How do you do that? Isay, just reps? Really,
That's that's what it comes down to, is like just going reps and reps
and reps, and I feel likeI'm a guy. It's like I get
better as I get going, solike throughout the season and stuff, I
feel like I get more adapted, more confident, and more comfortable. So
(20:37):
I think reps is a huge thingin modern day football. You're able to
play receiver kind of all year longin a certain kind of way against other
guys. All you need is aquarterback and a few dbs with their mouths
running. How much good of that? How much do you do that right
now? And how much of theoffense is installed or in your mind to
(20:59):
go out and like work on theright things if you know what I'm saying.
Yeah, I would say, youknow, we're kind of doing O
T H right now, so there'sno different rules and regulations and I'm learning
all those because college I feel like, let's put the paths on then go.
But yeah, you know, I'mtrying to learn the offense and get
more comfortable with it because like rightnow, you're trying to trying to figure
out the play what you got torun, so it's kind of harder to
see the big picture. But onceyou get you know, dialed in on
(21:22):
that, you can get out ofthere like, okay, I see what
see what leverages in and see whatthe defense doing on the back end.
So you know, it just comeswith you know, more more reps and
in practicing. For a guy yourage, you've been on the biggest stage
in football and had the greatest successat that level and been through a lot,
how different do you expect things tobe as far as space you know,
(21:44):
Yeah, with what you do atthis level, how much more precise
do you think you're gonna have tobe? Yeah? So I feel like,
you know, I've played SECM alittle bias, but I feel like
the best best conference there is,so thinking about playing nine conference games.
But but I got told the otherday it's like if you're playing like you're
(22:06):
playing the best player on the bestteams, like, and that's all across
the board. There's not just oneof them out there, there's eleven now,
so you know, margin ra shrinks. I mean, games are decided
about like one score or less likeevery single week, so you know,
shrinks down. You got to beefficient and stuff like that. I know
you'll say wherever they want to putme, but it's you know, everybody's
asking because it's a real versatile groupof receivers you have. Josh can play
(22:29):
anywhere, Quenton can play anywhere. Is there a place that you just when
you were at Georgia, was therea place that you liked to line up
in particular which everyone the route wasthe ball was coming to which No?
But really, I know, likeyou just said, I'm gonna say wherever,
But I feel comfortable outside inside Uh, it really does not matter to
me. So yeah, whichever routeis number one? No, I know,
yeah, which there you go,and you're gonna have to ask for
(22:52):
that ball from Justin Herbert. Iknow it's just OTA's and stuff, but
does it feel different? Is theway he throws that the passes you're catching,
where you're at in the right, where the ball is placed. What's
it been like working with him?Oh? Yeah, you can. You
can tell. There's there's a reasonthey pay him all that money. So
uh no, he can make anyin every throw, so, you know,
just building that chemistry with him,it's been great so far. Chatsworth,
Georgia, the North Murray High School, Nears Mountaineers, the Mountaineers,
(23:21):
Yeah, the Nears. Yeah, gotcha freaking sweet. Uh do you do
you talk back to them dudes? To you know, the DB's. Do
you do you talk a lot?Not at all? I mean, not
too much. You know, maybeevery now and then. All fun and
games, But like I feel likeit's more like if I catch them maybe
like give a little a look orsomething. I don't really do too much
talking. But if they you know, if they want to do it,
then it's all fun and games. You gotta have a little fun with it.
(23:44):
A little bit. You mentioned thehigh school. It now just kind
of came back to me. NorthMurray nears the state championship. So kind
of walk us through what you're doingon that team, because we were kind
of trying to make sense of thestats. It's like he threw for this
much, he ran for this much, he caught this many touchdowns, rush
for these touchdowns, interceptions, readthe punter or and the like. It
seemed like you did everything on yourhigh school football team that senior year.
(24:06):
What did you like, what wereyour responsibilities? Walk us through it.
I think that's a you're you're prettyyear out on that. So, I
