National Beef Jerky Day. Okay, did you know the alien fresh alien fresh?
(03:32):
Yes, thank you for the alienfresh beach. Did you know the
Cree tribe, the Native American Creetribe came up. That's why we call
it beef jerky. Why do wecall it jerky because they have a word
in the Kree language c ch apostrophea r ki charky, which is their
(03:53):
description of burnt meat. They wouldtake the protein of game and powdered berries
rubbed upon it. It would bepounded into thin strips and then slowly dried
over a fire, and they calledit jerky. Well, I'll tell you

fact that there is that connection. The Jerky Boys were Cree Native Americans,
(04:38):
Is that right? Yes, likeElizabeth Warren, they had a lot of
blood and that's why they called themselvesthe Jerky Boys. Sizzle Chest. It
is no time for quickeads quickets.I'll make it quick, y'all. Yeah,

(05:01):
hits. Of course, it hasbeen a sad day, a day of
tributes as well as Jerry West passedaway at the age of eighty six.
An incredible life and, as wehave discussed throughout the course of the show,
arguably the most impactful person ever toparticipate as a player, as a
(05:23):
coach, as an executive in theNational Basketball Association, selected three times as
a member of the Basketball Hall ofFame. He is going to go again,
go in again as a contributor, now sadly posthumously later this year,
and for those that only knew himas a general manager and of course as
a consultant for the Warriors and Clippers, one of the greatest players ever.
(05:46):
Everybody knows the silhouette is the logo. Third player in NBA history to reach
twenty five thousand points. An AllStar every single year of his career,
from his rookie season until the yearhe retired. He led the Lakers to
the NBA Finals nine times. UnfortunatelyBill Russell's Celtics were in the way just
about all of those. He didwin one title in seventy one seventy two.
(06:08):
A lot of tributes throughout the worldof basketball earlier today, this one
from Michael Jordan. I am sodeeply saddened at the news of Jerry's passing.
He was a true friend and mentor, like an older brother to me.
I valued his friendship to knowledge.I'd always wished I could have played
against him as a competitor, butthe more I came to know him,
I wished I could have been histeammate. I admired his basketball insights.
(06:30):
He and I shared many similarities tohow we approach the game. He will
forever be missed. My condolences tohis wife Karen and his son's rip Logo
and we had Jerry West on theshow Pee and we asked him lots of
times. I think the last timewas twenty twenty. I guess right.
It was right during COVID and thelast dance had just come on, So
we asked, so there is histribute Michael Jordan's tribute to Jerry. We
(06:53):
asked Jerry about his relationship with MichaelJordan. The thing that makes Michael Younique.
You can see his competitiveness, Okay, even when he was younger and
going to college, and I've beenfortunate enough to know him for so many
years. It just it's almost likethe inside of someone who's like this.
And you look at all the reallygreat players, some of them have had
(07:15):
it, but his ability to ratchetedup every game, I don't care what
it was. He had this burningdesire. Where it was created, I
don't know. He talks about hisfather a lot, and his relationship with
his father. His father really pushedhim. But from when he was days
(07:36):
in North Carolina, the things thatpeople don't realize about him, this was
one I don't know if we'll seean athlete like him in our time that
possessed this incredible athletic ability with abrain, with the physical tools he had.
(07:57):
It was crazy, wonderful from misterWest himself not only an icon and
beloved but one of the most wellrespected people for good reason. He carried
himself with an unbelievable dignity and decency. Steve Balmer sent out a message,
this is a hard day. I'mhonored to call Jerry a confidant, an
(08:18):
advisor, and a friend. Connie, my wife, called him my basketball
dad. He was absolutely my basketballsage wise, loyal, and so much
fun. If you were in hispresence, you felt his competitiveness and his
drive. He cared about everything andeveryone. From the first day I met
Jerry seven years ago, he inspiredme with his intellect, honesty, and
enthusiasm. He never stopped. Spenta lot of time with him, some
(08:41):
of the best times of my life. He always lent an ear and always
had a quip. He always leftme laughing. I will miss him,
and of course Lebron James tweeted out, We'll truly miss our convos, my
dear friend. My thoughts and prayersgoes out to your wonderful family forever.
(09:03):
Love Jerry, rest in paradise,My God. That is the correct delivery,
considering the exclamation point punctuation. Wehad James Worthy on a little bit
earlier, of course, a bigdebate about drafting James Worthy, about trading
James Worthy. Doctor Buss, aswe heard from James, approached Jerry about
(09:28):
doing that. He absolutely refused andunderstandably a very emotional day for our friend
who joined us earlier. Day wasa good friend. He was very instrumental
in creating my career by you know, trusting me, you know, over
guys like Dominique Wilkins and Terry Cummins. And you know, even if Ralph
(09:52):
Sampson had come out, he stillhad faith and what I could do for
this team, you know what mycould be and a team that was already
you know, superlative. But youknow, if you really get the notes
here over the years, which Idid, you know, all you had
to do if he called you,all you had to do was just say
(10:16):
hello, and then for the nexthour he would just pour out his heart.
He was a very introverted guy,but in his latter part of his
years he's very expressive and very lovingand just just cared about people. Wonderful
stuff on Mister West and of courseDoug Recorian today on as well, everything
(10:41):
available on the podcast as the wheelskeep turning and there'll be wonderful tributes tonight
throughout the night. Game three ofthe NBA Finals about to get underway in
Dallas, and the Lakers still donot have a head coach and Round one
of the NBA Draft that's fourteen daysaway. Well you really need a head
(11:03):
coach right now? Is did theymake it? I mean, have they
made an offer to somebody and theywere just declined the supposed to have somebody
in place right now. I askedsomebody to marry me, but I really
had my eyes on the girl thatI asked after. Well, yeah,
but you asked the person to marryyou, so clearly you you wanted them
to marry you, or you wouldnot have asked them to do so.
Really had my eyes the whole timeon the other You know, I hadn't
(11:28):
heard about Dan Hurley at all.I don't know where that came from,
but it was always J Jrey.Yeah, but they made him an offer
that you understand, they offered hima contract. If he says yes,
there's an agreement and he becomes that, you understand that shop's right. Didn't
have happened in my periphery, soI don't know. I mean, I
didn't hear that. I mean, clearly it was just for love. Yeah,
but they offered Dodgers forty two andtwenty six hosts the World Series champ
(11:50):
Rangers tonight Walker Bueler on the mound. They blew him away last night,
first pitch at seven ten. VastSATs got Corey Seeger and he's got the
whole pre because Kates has the dayoff because he's too upset that he can't
find a guest to show up andplay the park. The Dodgers acquired infield
and super utility man Gavin Bigio fromthe Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a
(12:15):
minor league pitcher. He's the sonof Craig Bgoho's a Hall of Famer,
and the Blue Jays cut him basicallyright, Yeah, designated him for assignment.
Cavin was a top five Rookie ofthe Year guy when he showed up,
and he was the future of theBlue Jays. You know him and
Vlad Junior and young te Bischett Baschet'skid, and he's just fallen off.
(12:39):
And now they're talking about trading thoseother two. So what was a bright
future for the Blue Jays? Isnow perhaps gonna benefit the Dodgers. He's
a utility guy, can play alittle bit outfield, second base, multiple
spots on the infield, and anotherleft handed hitting bat to make room.
Unfortunately, despite likely fighting himself asan Internet meme for the remainder of days,
(13:01):
for the remainder of time, MiguelVargus was sent to Triple A Oklahoma
City. Well. I didn't thinkyou would do that to your old friend,
but I guess I hate. Atleast he'll always have the meme.
At least they'll have the eye aftershow Hayes home run that made its way
around the world seven or eight timesbecause of his reaction, and a varied
(13:24):
dog with its head outside a cargoing sixty five miles an hour style.
Way to go, Miguel, here'sthe OKAC Express. Congratulations. The flippants
in which we treat people to getset to Oklahoma City is it's terrible.
It's not forgivable. It's not ourfault. Though the Dodgers do this.
They're the ones that every week, when they first really got rolling, Kates
(13:48):
would put this in the quick hitsand we'd be like, really again,
we've got to send someone to OklahomaCity. It's getting old, it's getting
ridiculous. My homie had to runacross the three lands night. Well,
okay, we'll be back with thetop story of the day as our show
continues on AM five seventy LA Sports. More to come and we have your
dead and a live Guy Berthie. The day before, David Vassays got Corey
(14:09):
Seeger on the pregame show. Staywith us, and a big thank you
to Colling Ye and Ronnie Fosciol forholding it down. It's cracking everybody,
And welcome back Petrus and Money Showon AM five seventy LA Sports. Been
a great day and great sports talk, a lot of memories for Jerry West.
Of course, make sure you hitthe follow button on the app so
(14:30):
you can get the latest notifications.David Vassa's got Corey Singer in the pregame
show and Mookie Betts and the Dodgerscoming up with Dodgers on deck at six.
But right now it's time with theTop Story of the day. Top
Story of the Day. Well,as you heard some snippets of conversations earlier
in the last segment of Quick Hitsfrom James Worthy, you mentioned Doug Grecory
(14:52):
and you can revisit that done alot of a lot of talking about the
passing of Jerry West. David Bassajoined usast hour as well, but figured
out would squeeze this in here,Pee in your top story because it is
something that has talked about now inevery sport. I knew him, and
yes you did, Fred. Iappreciate you telling me that for the fortieth
time. That's that's great. Youknew him. Sadly, mister West has
(15:16):
passed, and yes you did celebratinghim now, no question going to be
sorely missed. Was always wonderful totalk to him. One of the brightest
basketball minds that ever walked the earth. He'll be miss Fred. But I
know you knew him, so thankyou. Squeeze this in though, Pee,
we mentioned it there in quick. It's just a moment ago the Dodgers
(15:37):
trading for Cavin Bigio and this iswhat the Dodgers do, and this is
why they are so successful. Andmore than anything what Andrew Friedman's the guy
they brought in last year that struckout a whole bunch. Gallo Joey Gallo
with his fancy designer jeans and hispowerful trunk and his commando style so we
(15:58):
could show off his prodigious boots thetime he rolled into the stadium. But
this is what the Dodgers have doneand has now been applied to almost every
single sport. Not so much basketball. There's just not enough guys on a
roster, but certainly football. Andit's the churn and burn at the bottom
of the roster, constantly looking toupgrade. And here's the thing, not
(16:22):
everyone can do it. You needa bunch of things. Probably most importantly,
you need cash. You need tobe willing to pay to take these
chances, to assume contracts, totake what's left of a distressed asset and
hope that maybe you could turn aprofit on it, even though it's a
bit of a long shot. Bigiomaking two and a half million bucks this
season, one season of arbitration andteam control after this if they hit.
(16:47):
But the Dodgers basically just taking aone point six million dollar flyer they can
afford to hand Cavin Bigio one pointsix million dollars, that's what they're responsible
to pick up for a guy thatmight not play a whole lot, or
might not even be on the roster. In a couple weeks and they would
just have to eat the money. But they can. Bigio never hit two
(17:07):
fifty in any season, had asolid three seventy five on base in twenty
twenty. His power has disappeared. He has never had double digit home runs
since his rookie campaign in twenty nineteen, and that was five years ago.
He strikes out a third of thetime that he's up to bat. But
his last name is Bigio. Hisdadus Craig. He's a former fifth round
pick out of Notre Dame, andhe was a top five Rookie of the
(17:30):
Year vote getter after his initial campaignat twenty nineteen. I thought Irony was
like Cavin, was like the BrownieJames. He was forced upon the Blue
Jays the cost former fourth round picktwenty three year old reliever Braden Fisher career
numbers four or five, three ERAseven saves two hundred ninety four strikeouts in
(17:51):
two hundred and twenty nine eight's pitched. And there is a flip side to
this spee the cold reality of thebusiness of baseball. Our friend Miguel Vargas,
probably thinking it all right, hadfour Ribby's in his last five games.
Had Acheah. I mean if mydad loves outman you and it's not.
I don't know if you secretly doit, but you certainly you know
(18:15):
you pull the oars for for Vargas. I do. You're right, I've
got I'm not against Vargas. I'venever been for a pro Vargas show.
Well with that with you around,sure, I don't think we're half a
show that's pro Vargus. I feellike the whole show. I mean,
one of us that's more enthusiastic regardinghis existence is my enthusiasm. Uh.
(18:36):
Due in part to David Vassay's uh, overwhelmingly negative response to a question that
I may have asked of him aboutVargas and one power right now. Vargus,
though, like I said, hadhad a hit in each of his
last five games, sackfly last night, in his eight games since he'd been
(18:57):
called up, three doubles and adonger stole a base. Uh, yeah,
he had the misque and left fielddid. David vass said, Heavin
Phillips didn't give out those rother ByFargus does how to play those polls.
I don't run up there. No, he didn't give up the pitch to
give up the home run. Butif I go so, maybe there were
(19:18):
some issues with him. Put atent on him out there on left field.
We need Evan Phillips. We don'tneed Miguel Margus making him look bad.
That's my point. And that's thething pe it's too bad for Vargas.
But he was okay, he wasn'tgreat. He wasn't good enough.
James Outman was okay. He wasn'tgreat. He wasn't good enough. So
(19:40):
far, Andy Paez is doing goodenough to stick around. Uh And now
it's Cavin Biggio's turn. He doesnot have and this is what the Dodgers
do like when they make these trades. Bigio does not have to be one
of the best nine hitters on theteam. That is not what they want.
They can afford to write a checkfor one point six million dollars for
him to be the twelfth best hitteron the team, to be the eleventh
(20:04):
best hitter on the team, sohe can jump Chris Taylor, or he
jumps keyk Hernandez, or he jumpsGavin Lucks and that's the win. The
Dodgers are looking for the margins andif he can Dodgers right off one and
a half million bucks, the prospectthey gave up to get him, whatever,
And they go back to finding thenext one, the next Anthony Banda
(20:27):
or the next Johann Ramirez or thenext you can get a job doing PA
when lights I could Elies or Hernandez. No, that's not enough. She
goes way harder with Hernandez. Elias, Hernandez, you gotta go. You
(20:48):
really gotta just like get that hI'm working on it. Or I thought
he was the son of Alan Trammel. Turns out bears no resemblance to him,
Taylor or Tremuel. I think thislinebacker from Air Force is Jack youngblood
son. That'd be a hell ofa thing, tam because this guy is
(21:08):
does not bear any rest Taylor,Tremmell. Is that what he looks like?
How about that? But here's thething, Like all of those names,
Elias, he's already gone. Tremmellwas picked up and he was almost
gone immediately. He's already a Yankee. He was here for two weeks,
(21:29):
and they move on to the nextone, and every now and then it'll
pop Alex Vessia will pop, EvanPhillips will pop like that's what set and
it's found its way to football.John Schneider and Pete Carroll were the ones
that really embraced it first when theyI think had over one hundred transactions over
(21:51):
the colt's first year together. Justlike whatever man try to find reclamation right
exactly or just got yeah, somebodythat somebody else couldn't make work for whatever
reason, whatever, got that circumstanceand if he doesn't work, oh well,
onto the next one. We cando this every two weeks and good
on the Dodgers, And it's oneof the things to be thankful about if
(22:11):
you're a Dodger fan, because itis something that not every team, actually
very few teams in baseball do it. They're just not willing to write the
checks, to write the five hundredthousand dollars check, the three hundred thousand
dollars check, in the case ofBigio, the one point five million dollar
check. They won't do it.And so that's one of the benefits of
(22:33):
having a team in your town thatyou support that isn't just looking to maximize
their profits. When it comes tothe end of the year, they are
app they are one hundred percent allin committed to finding the best twenty five
guys or the best forty man rosterthat is going to help them win a
World Series. And this dude whohas not hit over two fifty in his
(22:56):
entire career but had that one seaof three seventy five on base percentage,
which would put him fourth on thisteam. Were it slid right between Otani
and Will Smith right now that AndrewFreeman is probably looking at and it's a
minor move, but it's a minormove that reminds us they make organization,
(23:18):
Yes, yeah, and I dobelieve that they do try to maximize profits,
especially through the Mister Cartoon t shirts. I was just gonna say the
way they do that, they finda good way is yes, is your
will make money? Pard they do? They still make money? Okay.
Coming up next, You're Dead anda live guy. Birthday of the Day.
Thank you for listening everybody. DodgersRangers. Coming up at six,

leave it at home and don't forget. David Massey's got beloved ex Dodger
born and raised in the Dodger franchise. Corey Seeger on the pregame show.
(25:55):
And here it is Matt the DeadGuy. Birthday of the Day. Yeah,
you're uh, You're dead guy.I don't know if we've ever done
this before. I feel like wehave because we are your Ken Burns PBS
documentary show of record. I've beentrying to switch it up, you know,
I do too, And then Iget stuck because I don't find anything
I like, and I'm like,today's not a great day. I could
(26:18):
maybe dig a little bit earlier inthe week, or I'm just going to
celebrate the two hundred and eighteenth ofJohann Augustus Robling. John Robling born in
Germany, educated at the Berlin Institute. Architecture and engineering was his passion,
specifically hydraulics. He worked for thegovernment. He built roads. He dreamed
(26:41):
of building suspension bridges, but thatnever came to fruition over there, so
he hopped the boat with his brothersfor the States in eighteen thirty two.
Now why because he and his brothersthought they could build a technological utopia here
in the Brands Bank and New UnitedStates. But it was a Silicon valley.
(27:03):
I think more like that guy CW. Post was trying to build.
Oh I got kibbutz of people thatall have sex with each other kind of
thing. Yeah, the idea ofa I think of a personal and also
forward looking from a things available toyou standpoint. While the utopia did not
(27:25):
pan out, he got his mechanicalengineering bug back and thinking back to an
article that he had read about wirerope he was determined to perfect it.
A seven strand wire rope at arope walk that he built on his farm
worked, and so he got towork, began producing wire rope to be
used in suspension bridges and the railroadit took off. It was the birth
(27:48):
and the start of the industrial revolution, and his invention was as important as
any of its time. But beyondall the uses of his wire rope steel
rope, he wanted to build bridges. That was his passion. So in
eighteen forty four, John Roebling wonthe bid to replace the wooden Canal aqueduct
(28:11):
across the Allegheny with the Allegheny Aqueductand his seven spans of one hundred and
sixty three feet each consisting of awooden trunk to hold the water. So
Sport closed it the town lost itssoul. Supported by Oh, he's in
there too. A continuous cable madeof parallel wires wrapped tightly together on each
(28:33):
side of the trunk was revolutionary, and because of it he won more and
more bids to build bridges. AsDavid Vassay would be happy to know,
eighteen forty five, his suspension bridgeover Pittsburgh's Monongahela River. When they closed
it was they mark the eighteen fiftyone railroad bridge connecting the New York Central
(28:56):
and Great Western Railway of Canada overthe Niagara River. With an eight hundred
and twenty five foot span supported byfour ten inch wire cables two levels,
one for vehicles, one for therail The high bridge completed as the first
ever cantilever bridge in the US witha truss for carrying the railroad traffic,
the highest railroad bridge over a navigableriver in the United States, it is
(29:21):
still in use and yesvasay. Theybrought him back in fifty nine eighteen fifty
nine to add the suspension bridge atPittsburgh over the Allegheny. He followed that
with one over the Ohio River atCincinnati, the world's longest suspension bridge with
a main span of one thousand andfifty seven feet, again a feat of
engineering that folks could not believe unlessthey put their own two eyes on it.
(29:47):
But his greatest gift to us Pwas in eighteen sixty seven, no
one asked Robling to build a bridge. His ambition was entirely self driven,
so unsolicited, he went to NewYork to promote his concept. He envisioned
a two level, six thousand feetlong bridge supported by cables anchored to masonry
blocks on each shore. It wouldhave two hundred and seventy foot high twin
(30:11):
towers, with each featuring two onehundred feet high Gothic arches resembling cathedral windows.
Despite facing rejection and significant opposition,on June twenty first, eighteen sixty
nine, Roebling's unrelenting passion eventually convincedCongress to grant him permission to build the
iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Yeah, theBrooklyn Bridge, our man genre. They
(30:34):
didn't ask him to build out abridge for sale of you. They didn't
ask him to build it pee,but he told them they should. He's
spoken at doing his lit LeVar Ball'sthe nineteenth century. Now did it end
well? No? Oh, FultonFerry standing on the edge of the dock
working on fixing the location where thebridge would be built, and a freaking
arriving Ferry crushed his foot. Hisinjured toes were amputated. No, he
(30:59):
refused further medical treatment. Oh God, No, don't due like Bob Marley.
Like Bob Marley, he said,no, I'm gonna use water therapy,
No boy, no what he woulddie of tetanus. Three weeks later,
his son Washington was named chief engineerof the Brooklyn Bridge. He got
the bens so his wife, hisdaughter in law, Emily, took over
(31:21):
the project and saw it through itscompletion in eighteen eighty three. Still one
of the great American creations, theBrooklyn Bridge, and it was built over
one hundred and fifty years ago.Happy birthday, John Brobley. Okay,
Matt, we got Jamaican news today. It's Jamaica news, Zig bros.
Don somebody do today and beating outJamaican stars, The Bounty Killer, the
(31:45):
Warlord and Protege a singer is anotherJamaican singer, songwriter, reggae star Eric
Donaldson would have been is seventy seven, would have been out seventy six and
then today he turned seventy seven becausehe's a line from Saint Catherine, Jamaica,
(32:07):
Saint Catrine about two miles from BobWalk. He submitted and recorded songs
for the one and only Clement Dodd, Matt the famous owner of Studio one
where Lee Scratch Perry was producing. But Dodd would not press his records.
He would not put it out.He didn't like it. He didn't think
(32:30):
he was good. So in thesixties he put together a singing group called
the West Indians. That didn't work, so he changed the name to the
Kilowatts. That didn't work, littlesuccess. But then he submitted this song,
Cherry Oh Baby. He covered theUBI forty song. Some might say
that, but all the way backin nineteen seventy one, he did this
(32:52):
song Cherry O Baby for the JamaicanFestival Song competition and he won, and
then he wanted five more times withother songs. And that competition is still
around, by the way, inJamaica million dollar grand Prize. Who's You
won it in twenty twenty. CherryOld Baby has been covered, as Matt
(33:15):
mentioned, thirty times at least, most notably by the Rolling Stones and then
U be forty Yes on the Laborof Love album. Oh Yeah, it's
a big hit. It's a bighit when I was in the grade school
there on the ninety three XRT theCheryo Baby, I mean it was a
big hit. Decade after decade.Really he still plays and tours all over
(33:40):
the world. The song is stillbeloved. Like Kwondo Kwonda Kuondo, there's
still a demand for it, Matt. The Dodgers haven't won a real World
series what since nineteen eighty eight. And you'll be happy to know that Eric

and Saint Catherine Jamaica doesn't pay likeit used to. You know, well,
(34:05):
he tours, you know, Ithink this is from a performance in
Ghana like last year. So hestill gets around. You know, my
dad's about the same age, andit's hard for him to get to Hollywood
to sink some chance. I meanit's probably harder to get for your dad
to get to Hollywood than for Ericto get to Ghana. I mean that's
an easy trip from Jamaica. Yeah, the canaands no like nothing. Yeah.
(34:30):
