(01:26):
the next segment, Matt, buta huge chase is popping off right now
with a shooting suspect on k Cow. A shooting suspect. I gotta turn
on TV and they're in Norwalk.Oh my god, he just grazed the
wall hard on the ground, butthere are no ground. What is that,
Matt, that's white? I kindof I don't know. I'm trying

(01:48):
to get to that. I didn'thave the TV on on ca Cal.
Is that an Infinity suspect? Yeah, it's on k Cow with that fat
bearded face guy. They keeps tightshot. We hate that one oh five
and we may be actually in thefreeway. And when this is before Pat
Harvey comes on, who's clearly lostthe fast How dare you know she is?
Oh god, this was a shootingthat happened at Fashion Island Mall in

(02:09):
Newport. That's this afternoon. Sohe killed a guy Fashion Island in Newport
handles a shooting. Yeah, firetells me that they did not. Normally,
they'll shoot you dead right there onthe spot. If you kill somebody
at in Newport and Fashion Island, well you got away. We've got multiple
suspects. This is this guy. This looks like you're right, p.
I think it's I think it's maybeAlexis. You see one of them wearing

(02:30):
a mask as well. Footbail, footbail out. You see one of the
footbail as well. They are outin run. Two dudes care about off
rep now making this turn on toparamount shooting suspects. Matt, I'm here,
but again we did not see thiscould be bad. Let's hope they're
not going to try to car.I am way behind you on my feet.
Unfortunately, we'll just keep it okay, but now I've got you.

(02:52):
Now they're on one now as they'reon Lincoln Avenue Cameron Avenue. We'll see
if the suspects split up. Theydid, but one's got a balaklab on.
We're yeah, you can't see me, fakes running into the out right
by the barber shop. There. We'll see how far that dude's got.
The guy in the balla clab,it's got some speed and he got understeen.
This other dude in the gray sweatshedabout a murder rap here, you

(03:15):
know somebody? Yeah, look atthat. Oh, the guy in the
gray sweats It's like, all right, I can't keep up with him.
I got to break off here.Up there's somebody just chilling with their Maybe
is he gonna run up on thatguy with a red car? And now
he just jumped the wall in thebackyard before we got to where we're at
now, before Desmond got overhead, they did stop and let several other people
out of the car. So thisis, oh my god. So they're

(03:36):
all spread out. Which one ofthese allegendly pulled the trigger, if that
is any of these two people,or if the person who this dude in
the gray sweater he is out ofshape, he is done. Well,
you know, Matt, that burstof adrenaline and then you get tired in
not to mention the burst of adrenaline. You know, when you kill somebody
a legend. There's that who isin their backyard. And let's not forget

(03:57):
this dude's in a full sweatsuit andit's like ninety nine degree outside, very
hot. This dude is wearing itright now. In South Dale. That
there was a shooting earlier. Wedon't know we dog shooting after that guy's
ball shooting, but we do knowthat they were on the car. Mike,
you mentioned that two had already gottenout, and two we just watched
us too, ran out, includingthat one that was you got any intelligence,

(04:17):
any police intelligence. Oh, you'rethat dog. That dog's coming up
right. We've got Huntington Beach pds. That's why you should have a dog.
People. Even that little yippie dog'sgonna deter that man from going in
that backyard. Now, homeowner,I think it's that house right there,
and I think he's under that awning. Yeah, oh, there there's a
dog right under the awning. Ithink I just saw him here right up
against the fat said, there isa it looked like a husky in the

(04:40):
backyard. This guy. You gota careful neighbor guy all night yep with
the So you got dogs in bothyards here and so why you know these
suspects sometimes they just go willy nillyou think they can hop in the back
really regret that getting a dog biteor something. But Huntington Beach PD they
are aware of this from the air. Let's just widen out though I've not

(05:00):
seen anyone HPS on this HBPD helicopterthat you said. But I'm not even
sure that they were involved in thispursuit at all. There's no police around
anywhere. Know what the hell arethey doing in the backyard. As we're
getting a little bit vertical here,we'll back off here. Do you see
an above ground pool? If hegoes a house over and behind there's a

(05:20):
winner bag, it looks like it'strash day out there. That's what like
trash day could call down a lotof homes in this neighborhood too. Of
course, where are the cops we'rewatching you hear on the right side of
your screen. Here, this iswhere these two suspects just foot base at
the trailer in front of the housebehind, running splitting up for just a

(05:41):
little bit of time. And nowI mean smokers. They let him out
right in front of a school andthere's no cops anywhere cop here in this
area the hell which is the areaof heart, I mean this is this
is a heavy firework area. I'dlike to think someone could get a mortar
to the chest for these a holes. If you are in this neighborhood,
definitely you're going to be hearing thehelicopters up above. You may hear some
police making announcements over a louds. The guy that ran from the cops better

(06:08):
than the other one had less heavycock on move. Yeah, look you're
right. It looked like he wasmore tracksuit for than sweatsuit. Fortunately,
a pretty perfect opportunity for them withno law enforcement at all behind them.
Where's the law enforce? These areshooting suspect right, so violent criminals.
This isn't like a joy ride. And well we only have one cop.

(06:30):
We got more than one cop, right, is certainly a scary time for
the folks. We got more thanMatt Dillon chasing after these cats, don't
we. They don't necessarily know what'shappening. They didn't just spend five minutes.
They might not five minutes. Unfortunately, helicopters above and hell's going on
in South Date aren't so uncommon,So folks might not be realizing we're watching
that little bit of this. Guys, we saw that the white toyota hit

(06:55):
the center divider. There the sheriff'shelicopter. Yes, he's trying to point
at him three showing where he is, or just to the CP still there.
Yeah, and we see something soyeah, yeah, this guy looked
like he was trying to maybe pointout to law enforcement of the helicopters.
Hey, I see him right here. Yeah, he was exactly nice.

(07:15):
If you were a police, howabout how about a black and white?
Can we get a black and whiteover here? You have three law enforcement
helicopters on this. Obviously we needto pretty as we come back. But
he was pointing right nice sleeveless shirt, so that maybe had hopped the wall.
But uh, you know this person. Unfortunately the sounds got their own
PD What is this post apocalyptic scenebeing in this as we kind of double

(07:39):
in? Uh yeah, I thinkis that them right there? Uh?
Yeah there? Look at that rightbelow the Beware of Dogs. There is
that suspect behind the green containers.Look at that got him? Yeah?
They do? Right there there thereis Look at him hide down like a
little bed taking off the hide behindthe trashy yep, yeah, yep.

(08:01):
Maybe going for a little bit ofa you know, a clothing change to
throw off the authority is a verycommon tasty. That's pretty impressive camera work,
Matt. That's good work there, taut if we can it's just so.
But it doesn't help if we're lookingat him, if a cop doesn't
come and around him for us hereand where's the dog? Mike Rogers needs

(08:22):
to talk to you for a second, Amy Johnson and I will keep monitoring
the situation here and keep watching what'sgoing on here. You can see now
we have zeroed in on an arearight there on the side yard of this
home where you see the beware ofdog sign and those two green recycling bite.
That guy is really crouched down. Its possible shooting at the Fashion Island
Mall in Newport Beach, is basicallyhiding out. I think we saw him

(08:46):
take off his sweatshirt. He waswearing a lighter colored gray sweatshirt. Every
cop and while he was still kindof hiding behind the green container, you
could see him take off his shirt. It's still pretty dark there, but
we were able to get a prettydecent and shot of him, and Desmond
is using that magnifier there and canget on that. This is kind of

(09:09):
ahead whatever the this is local emmyeffort behind the trash can there and the
reason I was, it's got nothinglike that. Helicopter actually left the scene
and was continuing to track on theWest Spotlight a new edition that I had
not yet seen. That I thinkwhen we watched these two suspects get out

(09:30):
of that white the other is gonso no idea where that guy he was
in black, the other in thegray. We are watching who we believe
is the just the gray gray thelong guy black is long gone. They
said another helicopter was tracking him. They got another, They got the other
helicopters tracking HP. Helicopter left thescene and continue. I want to see

(09:50):
this guy that have concerned. Well, we might be waiting apparently because they
don't believe in our pilot. Maybe waiting an hour or so. Let's
just do off of the day andwait for them to police south. You
see another headline there a bear wascapturing chats or walking around the streets.
How about that, Well that wasb one could be one there. They
are not law enforcement there there wego here here there we go. You're

(10:16):
gonna knock at all your friends. They're gonna get this. He probably confidential
now they have made their way tothis. That's why does South Police look
like there's something Caribbean Island Police theshow. Let me see if I can
figure out where that was. So, yeah, that was just the south

(10:39):
Gate top is still asleep and hisholder and they stabbed this actually steal law
enforcement. Hell all right running Thisis the song of the day. Yeah,
that was pretty exciting. Fictional environmentDream is our song of the day

(11:01):
from the music machine that is RobertPollard along with his band Guided by Voices.
New Music is what it is fromthe new album titled Strut of Kings
that came out just a few daysago. It's the fortieth record for the
veteran indie rock band from Dayton,Ohio, and the perfect tune to keep
us moving along on a Tuesday afternoonon the Petros and Money Show, where

(11:22):
three hours of great sports talk willget us to Dodger Baseball back at home
and back on the air with theArizona Diamondbacks for three and Tim Cats will
have that Marongo Casino Dodgers on Deckshow right here at six o'clock did we
talk about Angel City FC. Nowyou better do it, Matt, this

(11:48):

(12:33):
get out out there. It's gonnabe a great time at AGENCITYFC. The
chase continues on Channel seven if youwant to watch it. That guy circled
back and got in the car.We though, are ejecting for commercial.
The pursuits continue on ABC, butwe're gonna do some great sports talk.
We This one's a little dangerous shootingsuspect, I mean, what are you

(12:54):
all right? Uh? Thank youfor listening. Everybody on AMPI seventy LA
Sport, Matt and I are Rolandon a two ed mono Tuesday, and
let's give Colin number three a pairof Dodger tickets. Right now at eight
six six, nine eighty seven twofive seventy collar three is going to the
Dodger game on AM five seventy LASports, your home of the Dodgers.

(13:16):
Keep your head on a swivel inWest Adams. Everybody, it's time to
the top story of the day,Top story of it. So two part
today, Pete. We've been talkingabout it quite a bit. It's the
presser for Dalton Connect and Bronnie Jamesa lot more Bronnie James. But there
was one question and tip of thecap to Dave mcminnamon from the Evil four

(13:37):
Letter for asking it. And I'llstart with this coach the FN team,
like, who in the hell doyou think you are? Coach the f
N team. Here is JJ Reddick'sanswer as to whether or not he's going
to coach the Summer League. DaneJohnson will be coaching the California Classic and
Summer League. I will be heavilyinvolved in practices. I will also be

(13:58):
involved in some capacity during the games, during film. All of that.
You know, we talk about development. It's an incredible opportunity for Dane and
his staff to develop further. Forme, I have to sort of prioritize
a bunch of different things right now, including building out a staff. Dane

(14:22):
Johnson and his staff are far moredeveloped than you are. They are far
more developed than you are in coachingNBA players playing basketball that if you have
the time, you could not possiblyhave anything more important on your plate.

(14:43):
Because when he says he's going tobe heavily involved and Dane Johnson will coach,
and I'm going to be heavily involvedin practice, and I'm going to
be heavily involved in film, andI'm going to be heavily involved in practice,
then why in the mother effne hellare you not heavily involved? And
by heavily involved, that would becoaching the game, coaching the two hour

(15:07):
games that move at light speed comparedto your typical NBA game, Summer League
games move they pack four or fiveof them into an afternoon. So if
it's one or the other, eitheryou need to build out your staff.
And unfortunately that's gonna take priority, but they're in good hands. Dave Dane
does a great job with the GLeague roster and getting these guys ready to

(15:31):
play, So I have full faithhe's going to do right by Dalton and
Bronnie and all of the other guyswere signing them have a chance to be
part of this team. But Ineed to build a staff. I need
to help build this roster. WithRob We're on free agent pitch meetings and
I've got to do no. Soit's one or the other. And this
is Polinka and the issue I havewith him playing the role of a complete

(15:54):
clown again, like you're the generalmanager. You have to grab him by
his freaking lapel and say you're coaching. You are going to coach the summer
League. You are going to engagewith NBA referees, you are going to
make in game adjustments against NBA assistantcoaches. You are going to get into

(16:15):
a huddle with grown men that makemillions of dollars, and you are going
to go head to head with guysthat have been doing this four years.
So get your ass to San Franciscoand get your ass to Las Vegas and
get to work. This is greatto say that it gives Dane Johnson an
opportunity to develop when JJ Reddick hasnever coached beyond the Brooklyn Basketball Academy U

(16:42):
nine team. It is interesting thatthere's literally a built in league to help
you get your feet wet, andyou're not going to do it right.
It's it's the most It truly isan op it lock it is it is
it is it gonna help him considerably? No, maybe not, but just

(17:03):
the optics of it. The optics, well, they don't care about optics.
They hired a guy who's never coached, who's podcast partner with Lebron,
and they drafted his son and gavehim a multi year deal. I mean,
they don't care about optics. Ifthey cared about optics, we wouldn't
do that. To me, it'sJJ. He doesn't want to do it
because he'd be the only current NBAhead coach coaching the summer league team.

(17:25):
Hey, f you you're currently theonly NBA coach that's never coached ever at
any level. Ever. The othertwenty nine guys, they've all coached in
the NBA. Every Is that whatyou're saying? Yes? And I would
guess that every one of the NBAhead coaches at one point was the head
coach of their team, summer leaguesquad, somewhere. They've all done it.

(17:48):
It is not there is nothing. There is absolutely nothing that is beneath
JJ Reddick as a head coach ofthe Lakers. Nothing is below it.
He's not done anything. Nothing couldpossibly be beneath him, as he has
never done anything in the realm ofcoaching. You nine, my son's team

(18:10):
does not count. Zero dues havebeen paid, literally zero. It is
an abject failure of a decision. And I just after he said it,
I cannot believe. And again Icredit mcminnimhon for asking the question, but
the fact that nobody there followed upon it and just asked Polinka, Hey,

(18:32):
you're okay with this. You're okaywith this guy's first bit of coaching
action being the three or four preseasongames. You get going into a regular
season where on paper you're probably theeighth or ninth best team in the Western
Conference, and you're okay with acoach that's got zero experience, not at
least just I don't know, getrid of the butterflies, get out there

(18:56):
and feel it. Since he he'snever coached in a game that has NBA
rules. I don't know if younine even has ten foot rims. I
don't know. Like it you're buildingout the staff, then you can't be
heavily involved. If like it's becauseyou have to build out a staff,
then you can't be heavily involved. It's one or the other. Either you're

(19:18):
not involved and Dan and his staffwill take care of it, while Dane,
I should say, and his staffwill take care of it while you
build out your or you're heavily involvedand the extra three hours of coaching the
game is too is below you?And Yann was the guy they low balled
Matt. Yeah, No, that'sright, Yes, was exactly right.
Uh. It's pathetic, It reallyis. It's pathetic. It it it

(19:41):
feels right in step with everything elsethat we've been watching unfold. It's yes.
And again there's gonna be somebody todefend it and tell you you're stupid
and you don't and you can't youhave to ignore the evidence of your eyes
and ears. And they'll say coachingthe summer league doesn't do any what's that
going to do for him? Whatis that he's never coached anything ever?

(20:04):
Yes, he's been a player, and he sat on a bench, and
he's watched assistance and he's watched guysdo it, but do it. We've
all watched things, and we've allobserved things, and then when we try
to do them ourselves, it's alot harder, even though we think we
perhaps have gotten some modicum of understandingof how to navigate it. And then

(20:26):
you do it and you're like,oh, yeah, this is a lot
harder than I thought. And almosteverything and watching can certainly help, and
you can kind of gain an understandingand an appreciation and an idea of how
you'd want to do it based onwhat you've observed and absorbed and studied.
But doing you know, my daughtergoes to cal Poly Slow, what's their
slogan, learned by doing do it, not by watching? And just the

(20:51):
I think that was the other thingtoo, and that the part of that
clip, the it's going to giveDane an opportunity and his staff to develop
that's I mean, my god, talk about arrogance. That yeah, Well,
it's a holistic approach, you know, it's a it's a holistic approach
to learn by doing, And he'sgoing to learn by doing by not doing

(21:12):
that's right, I'm gonna take itanother step. Yeah, and uh,
you know, I also really appreciated, you know, Bronnie James saying he
wasn't used properly at USC the handpicked school by Clutch Sports. Well,
it's it's a perfect segue. P. I appreciate it because every contract is
different, every prospect is different, and when it comes to second round picks.

(21:34):
With the new flexibility allowed for thelatest Collective Bargaining agreement, UH,
teams can decide what they want todo with their second round picks. And
to kind of put this into context, what they're doing with Bronnie signing him
to a multi year contract, it'sgoing to be partially guaranteed, that'd be.
My guess is just look at whathappened to Amri Bailey, one of,

(21:56):
if not the best Sierra Canyon playerthat helped launched that high school into
a national brand. And if youforgot what a powerhouse he was as a
freshman, he was the best playeron their Open Division state title team.
As a junior, Amari Bailey averagedtwenty nine points, nine rebounds, six
and a half assists and won MisterBasketball of California Amari Bailey twenty nine nine,

(22:21):
six and a half as a juniorin high school is what he averaged
double what Bronni averaged as a seniordouble. He goes to UCLA and really
the only way to put it asthe number one recruit before he got injured
his senior year a disappointment. Nowhe was a disappointment at eleven points,
four rebounds, two assists of steeland really had a nice Pac twelve tournament

(22:42):
And probably one of the reasons whyhe decided to put his name into the
draft, because he was part ofthat Altorney team at like twenty six in
the opener. And I'm not usingit to pile on Brownie's college stats or
how far behind Bailey he was inhigh school. Properly, mad, Yeah,
that's what it was. He wasn'tused properly. I'm using it to
point out that Bailey was given atwo way contract from the Hornets after being

(23:03):
drafted forty first overall. He gotpaid five hundred and sixty grand last year,
played the majority of his time inthe G League, played ten leagues,
ten games for the Hornets, andhe was just cut. He was
just cut. He should not havegone out he should have stayed that Corona
would never say that he wished himluck, but he should not have gone
out. And that's who we're talkingabout. Was on a two way contract.

(23:27):
No longer on the Hornets. IsaiahWong was the fifty fifth pick last
year of Indiana, same number Browniewas picked. High school ball in the
Philadelphia Catholic League, won the Classfour A state title average twenty two to
seven and three. Was the leagueMVP goes to Miami. And you remember
Isaiah Wong. And when I say, you remember that magical run from Miami

(23:47):
from that U to the final four. He was the MVP of the ACC,
the driving force behind that run tothe final four. Last year in
twenty three, fifty fifth pick, two way contract, five hundred and sixty
grand just by the Indiana Pacers. That's how good those guys were well used.
Those are guys that were used properly. Yeah, I just feel like

(24:08):
I've I've been given an opportunity to, you know, showcase what I can
really do, because I wasn't giventhat much of an opportunity. I see,
That's why you should have gone back. Yeah, they say terrifying health
scare. They saved your life. But you know, yeah, that's a
pretty good opportunity. Didn't have anopportunity. That's why you go back,

(24:29):
and that you couldn't go back,Why because then your dad wouldn't have had
his moment. And it's why heweigh and yes, call me whatever you
want to call me, but Lebronwanted his own selfish personal glory, and
that's why a two way wouldn't work, and that's why signing him after the
draft wouldn't work. He wanted hisown personal glory. And he waited a

(24:49):
day thinking that maybe we wouldn't remember, because it was a day or two
later that he engineered this whole thing. But of course he had to put
it out there, had to writethe tweet. And I knew what was
coming. I freaking knew it wascoming. Did with the fifty fifth,
you son of a bitch? Withthe fifty fifth? He forgot the right
pick with the fifty fifth In thetwenty twenty four NBA Draft, the LA

(25:11):
Lakers select dot dot dot Bronnie Jamesdot dot dot six one tier emojis just
had a moment. It's a momenthe wanted for himself, not his son.
Every single analyst, former player toa man that we talked to said,
yeah, probably not draftable. IfI were getting i'd tell him to
go back. I think he's capableof developing and being a potential first round

(25:33):
pick. Maybe he's got to learnhow to shoot, he's got to get
a handle, he's got to becomea point guard. He's only six to
one, got a run point andmaybe you creep into the first round next
year. You're making millions of dollarsin nil. They didn't give him anything,
Matt, Yeah, here, you'rewrong. Hey, you're wrong.
He earned it, Rob and Idid not give Bronnie anything. Bronnie has

(25:56):
earned this, Yeah, coach theSummer League, bag Funny has earned this.
You haven't. You haven't earned this, Coach the Summer League. Give
him his seven million dollars deal thatMaxwell Lewis got last year, and then
send another tier emoji ti emoji. My son just signed his first NBA contract.

(26:19):
It'll be a picture of him signingtierramoji Tiara surreal as a dad,
do experience this right now? Tieremoji Tiramoji. God, I'm a terrible
person, but I don't care.No, if I don't care that we
all just have to sit here andwear it. And then the fact that
everybody's like, hey, this isgreat. I don't have problem with this.

(26:40):
It's like, okay, I thinkit's beautiful. What's happening between a
father and his son. F you, Let's just do this forever. We'll
be back with more great sports talk. We've got the one and only Tom

(27:42):
Perfect Eloquence is his latest book andappreciation of the great Vin Scully. We
lost Vin in twenty twenty two andTom hol Farth wanted to pay tribute in
a very unique way. And Tomhole Farth has paid tribute to many over
the years in a very uh classy, eloquent and creative fashion. So joining

(28:07):
us is our friend Tom Hofar onthe Petrosen Money Show on your Dodger Station,
where Vin pedaled his wares for manyyears before we lost him to retirement
and then ultimately he died. What'scracking, Tom? How are you?
I am great? And I wantto tell you how much confluence of karma

(28:30):
this book has been, which hasreally been. I can't believe it.
But but to get to this conversation, I had to pull off the five
Freeway and I landed at the KingTaco in East La on Olympic and Downy
Road, and I'm in heaven.Oh wow, it's what kind of talking
in heaven? What kind of talk? I'm waiting. I'm waiting. I'm
waiting there for call my name. You know when they say, well we

(28:56):
better get this cracking name you dad. No, No, it's good.
They know, they know I gotbigger things to do. So no,
this has just been really cool.I'm out. There's a friend of mine
who lives out here, and I'llgive you this a plug. There's a
friend of mine who lives out herein Senior VA Housing and Boyle Heights finally
got his own house living in avan for so long, we got we
got him all set up. Hisdog Milo is in great shape and it's

(29:18):
just great to see this. Itook him on a little tour of his
neighborhood today to pick up some stuff. And this is this is what led
me to talk to you guys today. I'm now my buddy. It's a
really it's a very cool way toput something together. And I do you
know like you knew Vin very welland he was all he was never interested
in talking about himself, especially celebratinghimself. So what a great way to

(29:41):
celebrate him. Where not everybody canwrite, not everyone can pen an essay.
Were you surprised at the quality oftributes uh in storytelling that you received.
Yeah, it was surprised at howmany people reacted right away, like
yes, I'll do this, andyou should talk to this person. Peter
O'Malley says, yet, and youshould talk to Bruce Freming. And the
first producer whoever worked on a vengame with Red Barber in the nineteen fifties

(30:04):
is still alive. You should talkto him. And it was just collecting
Al Michaels and all those people whojust said, you know, tell me
when you need it, let's getit done. But it was just this
and again to this confluence of gettingpeople to write essays and some didn't want
to, some were great at it. But in the end there were sixty
seven essays and I was like,at the deadline, I'm adding it up

(30:26):
and I go, wait, thisdoesn't make sense. Sixty seven is such
a random number, but that's exactlythe number of years didn't work for the
Dodger. So I go, allright, that's it, this is done,
this has been heaven sent. Let'smake it work. And so it
was not a lot of arm twisting. The great Tom Hofarth, there's our
guest. We always appreciate talking toTom and one of the great newspaper writers

(30:47):
in the history and media critics, believe it or not, in the history
of our city, and he stillcomes on our show despite his history of
being a media critic. You know, there's certain things over the years that
we all know about Vin and connectto certain people. Did you lean on
people to tell certain stories or didyou just let him go? No?

(31:07):
I could let him go because thegreat part was that I didn't know a
lot of the stories. Like Ididn't know about Ned Kletti owning Vin's golf
clubs. Ben put them up forauction with a bunch of things, and
led scooped them up and told Vinabout it, and Ben was so happy
to hear that, and just allthe connections that people like. So in
some way, it's not really atribute book. It's really an appreciation of
all the things that he did forpeople. And that's why I wanted people

(31:30):
to know that as much as youknow him as your grandfather or your uncle's
in your living room and in yourcar for all those years and felt like
a part of the family, hewas really a first class citizen, a
gentleman, showed empathy, he hadfriendship, he had this great religious foundation,
and that's what I really wanted peopleto talk about. So we got

(31:51):
nine different topics for people to sortof slot their essays into it, and
it worked out just great. Whythis may sound I think this is going
to be a bad question. I'mgoing to ask it anyway, Tom,
What made him so good? Whydo you think he was so good?
And why has no one been ableto not even replicate it, but to
even and there are great play byplay people out there, but no one's

(32:12):
come close to Ben. Why doyou think that is? Well, it
was from the era that he camefrom, and that's the perfect eloquence is
the name of a class they taughtat Fordham University when he was a freshman,
and it's basically how to keep yourego in check and tell the story
and be empathetic and understand what's goingon. And so when that generation a

(32:35):
person takes that into heart and yougrew up with that Catholic education and you
kind of replicate it. And you'rea family person, so you have the
art of storytelling, which he hadobviously, you have the art of reporting.
He was not a homer, andthis connection to all these generations,
and he spoke right to you becauseit was a single broadcaster, and that
again is not going to be replicatedbecause they don't do that anymore. So

(32:58):
when he started on the radio assomeone who painted pictures, that was his
medium, and most people right nowstart in the television medium where you're just
adding captions of things, and hejust adjusted to all those things. And
I guess as great as a broadcasterhe was, which I think we all
can agree, I think he waseven a greater person. And that's what

(33:20):
I hope comes out of these essays, available everywhere, Amazon, your local
bookstore, hopefully maybe even the KingTaco in Boyle Heights. The great Tom
Hofarth, our friend joining us rightnow on the Petrosen Money Show. Perfect
eloquence about Vin Scully, and storiesabout Vin Scully never get old, and

(33:42):
remembering and appreciating what he did neverreally gets old either. Why do you
think he didn't ever write an autobiography? Tom? Why do you think he
never sat down and actually did that. I don't think he wanted to dedicate
the time. He didn't have theego to feed one of these things,
and he didn't have I think whathis nephew said once was that he had
written his memoir by just being aliveand talking it every night. So that

(34:06):
was something he really wasn't interested in, and plus it would take away from
his family time. He always saidthat Walter O'Malley never did a biography.
You know, there's plenty of peoplein LA who could have helped him with
a biography, and I think BillKlasky would have been number one on the
list. Ron Rappaport and others haveapproached him over the years, and he
just all turned him down. Andhe always says, well, I don't
want to favor one friend over another. And I said, you know what,

(34:27):
that's that's a perfectly legitimate excuse,and you don't want to do it
yourself. So guess what when whenyou're gone from here, we're going to
write it for you. I thinkit just to wrap it up Tom and
again it's perfect eloquence and appreciation ofVin Scully. What like, I think
it's just sell the essays. Youknow, let's help people pick this thing
up and get it into their collectionof great sports books. You mentioned Ned

(34:50):
and the golf club story in PeterO'Malley and the producer of the first broadcast
that he was ever on. Whoelse is included? Like you said,
pretty much everybody said yes, Oh, Matt Best scourge, and uh,
you know, it's hard to singlepeople out, but just the broadcasters who
revered him and learned from him areone thing. But then the people who
became friends with like is the peoplein the booth, Doug Man and Boyd

(35:13):
Robertson and those guys who just hadthis great relationship with him. And I'm
just I was because of a deadline, I couldn't ask everybody to write an
essay. I wanted David Vessie tosee what he could come up with too.
But you know, the great thingis I understand is David, hopefully
we'll be giving this books out,the books out on Dodger Talk coming up
soon, so that'll be a realtreat. And it's just there's a website

(35:34):
called vin Vin Scully Appreciation book dotcom where you can really see all the
essayists, all the background, justall the material I used to pull this
together. So hopefully this is justthis book is just the start of another
project that people will want to contributetheir own essays to because I'd love to
hear with you guys. You guyshave had probably great encounters with them other
than just you know, sweating myballs off in that boothtoo, no doubt

(36:00):
about it. We love you,Tom. Thank you for putting this book
together. We wish it the greatestof success, even more than Tim Neverett's
COVID Curveball. Believe and have awonderful day. You're a great person.
Thank you Tom. All right, order number two is ready to go.
Thank go get it, and we'llbe back with another hour of great sports

(36:22):
talk. We got quick hits.We have got Sam Amic from the Athletic.
It's writer's day around here, andof course you're dead and a live
guy. Birthday of the Day.
