Maran is gonna sign a multi year, fully guaranteed rookie contract that will land
him on the Laker roster. Wetalked about it earlier, Sam Amic.
We're going to talk to him aboutbigger picture stuff in the next segment.
No rookie two way that second roundpicks jeneral, especially ones that weren't that
(03:53):
good generally receive. Yeah, aswe kicked around a little bit earlier,
it's it's not totally out of theordinary. You know, Trace Jackson Davis
got it last year with the fiftyseventh pick. He got the four year
deal, and I would assume it'sgoing to be the same four year deal
that he got that Maxwell Lewis got. It's basically about three million bucks guaranteed
(04:15):
seven million dollars UH in total opportunityfor him to earn. And it's just
them selling the idea of their theirgetting in early. Well, I would
we want to put them on atwo way if we think, you know,
we were fortunate to get him earlyand we're going to develop him and
he's going to outplay this contract anyway. That's how they're going to sell it.
But again, it's just another featherin the capita Lebron and Rich Paul
(04:38):
to say that he's not a twoway player that can be cut, you
know, at the end of hisfirst year, like Amari Bailey just was
in Charlotte. It's any whatever CaliforniaClassic Summer League games this weekend for the
Lakers. First opportunity for Bronny andDalton connect gang to get out there on
the court. Anyone else getting onthe court with them, pe A,
nonyone else that's a familiar name goingto be on the court in the summer
(05:00):
league with him, that were asfar as the coach goes, as far
as the coach involved and evily involved, huh, Brodi's gonna be out there.
Yeah, below him, it's belowhim to go on the court and
coach a summer league game, becauseno other NBA coach is coaching a summer
league game. Maybe he doesn't wantto get exposed, like expose a season
six with that accent on the eexpose. Michael Thompson, speaking of accents,
(05:25):
is not happy with Clay chusing theMavericks over the Lakers, at least
not publicly. He went on SeriousExam Radio this morning and sounded very disappointed,
not too killing too much in acongratulatory mood right now, because I
mean, obviously it's Clay's decision,is his life. He's a grown man,
thirty four years of age, justlike we were thirty four one time
scale Frank and our Fobby's to giveus advice, and you know, we
(05:46):
would go to our own path, and that's fine, that's what life is
supposed to be about. But Iwas I'm really disciplined. I was hoping,
hoping as you can, you canassess that I would he would be
a Laker, and uh it wasclose. It came down to the Lakers
and the MAVs, but the MAVswent out. But you know me,
I was hoping and praying he'd finishedhis career with the Lakers. Obviously,
(06:08):
I tried to sell the playing forthe Lakers. Obviously that's the right thing
for me to do and the properthing for me doing. I felt like
it was the correct thing for meto do because I really believe in this
franchise. The franchise have been sogood to me and my family, including
Clay. He grew up a Lakerfan. He grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant,
like most players his age, mostkids his age. So I just
(06:29):
thought it seemed like to be theperfect fit for him to finally come back
home because we always talked about himplaying for the Lakers if he was not
a Golden State Warrior. Where elsewould he want to play? And of
course, being a fan of Kobe's, he would have loved to have played
for the Lakers. But he hada chance, and when the chance came,
he chose the Mavericks instead, AndI'll live with it. I accepted,
and I'm happy for him that he'shappy with his decision. But yeah,
(06:54):
of course I tried to sell himon the Lakers. He loved that
he stopped short of taking a chanceat championship, which you wont but of
course when he had a check whenthe chance came up, I mean,
it's not a chance in a championship, which he absolutely does not have here.
It's almost like the same as Brownie. It's like who wants to be
(07:15):
on a plane with their dad,And I think that's where Michael is.
You know, I don't want tosay it that way, but like,
look, yeah, hey Clay,I really want you to be here.
I'd love to be around you. You're my son. Would be awesome for
me, but oh yeah, it'snot good for you. Go do your
own thing. It's it might begreat for me because I'm a dad and
we want to be around our kidsas much as possible. But yeah,
(07:35):
that's not good for you. Ibelieve in the Lakers. That does not
mean you have to. But whenhe had a check. Dodgers are fifty
two and thirty three. They starta six game homestand tonight they've been less
than impressive of late. First ofthree versus the Snakes. Bobby Miller is
(07:56):
on the mound and the US isout, tim Ysa is going down.
That's a bit scrash. Freaking richKids is good. Last night, Utagway
beat them. They're not going toadvance on the knockout round. Now the
finger pointing has begun. Alexei Lawlessand his red head waggon around and some
(08:16):
believe that head coach Greg Berhalter.Yeah, uh, they're blaming him.
He has not done well against teamsI think in the top fifteen, zero
five and five, so not asingle win save Mexico, and the team
is Many are saying after the gameyesterday and even today some guys on the
(08:37):
team that they're just soft, thatthey do not The national team in the
United States is not like the nationalteam in Uruguay or Panama or when they
get into the World Cup Freaking Ghanaand these other places where it is damn
near life and death. They takethe sharp elbow and they wilt. Yeah,
they do flower in the sun andnow they want to sack the coach.
(09:01):
In Santa Clara, Brazil takes onCOLUMBIOND the Group D matchup. Gonzo's
on his way. Both teams havealready secured bids in the round of six
team and in Austin, Costa Ricatakes on Pinawaii. Both teams so far
and are going home after tonight's game. The Ticos and the Yuka TECO's down
(09:22):
there. You don't think they're gonnaplay for pride, you know. I
think they're gonna play their tails off. Uh oh, yeah, they are
kidding me, even though they're goinghome. Dust their ass out there.
Somebody's gonna throw a bag of urinefor sure. The battery to the head.
The Euro twenty twenty four, theNetherlands beat Romania down in Romania three
to nothing. And Turkey, Oh, your favorite team, You're lucky to
(09:43):
be in the youth your Euro.My ass. Turkey defeated Austria. They
shouldn't even be in it two toone. Go play Saudi Arabia. Both
teams moved on as a quarterfinal round. Thank you. I'm sorry. If
(10:05):
you want to give it back toGrease, then we'll play the Euros.
There you go. Yeah, Hey, Turkey freaking Lebanon Turkeys, Sirie,
I don't want to hear it.Get out Turkey hungry, my ass,
Turkey Romania, my ass. Andwe'll talk to Sam amck in the very
next segment. Should we give awaythe tickets now? Yeah? Do it,
dud right now, let's do it. Caller ten eight six six nine
(10:28):

What a great to celebrate the holidayweekend. Dodgers Brewers Sunday from your home
of the Dodgers. Caller ten rightnow eight six six nine eight seven two
five seventy. Cheers Dodgers Diamondbacks allthe way through the fourth of July holiday.
(10:50):
And we will have that tonight sixpm. We're off seven o'clock,
first pitch. Remember giving away Dodgertickets every single hour today, been doing
it all day for the Dodger brewgame on Sunday. It is an opportunity
for you to keep listening for achance to win and Matt. We reached
out and we're so happy and pleasethat this great man, in this time
(11:15):
of incredible breaking news, joined usin this very moment to give us his
insight. Longtime NBA insider and heroto the people. You read him on
the Athletic. He covers the SanJoaquin Valley like a cloud of happiness when
it comes to his great NBA coverage, and it's a global coverage helping us
(11:39):
figure out what the Lakers can doin free agency and what the Clippers are
going to do without Paul George. It's the great Salmon on your Southern California
Toyota Dealer celebrity hotline on the oneand only Petrosen Money Show on AMPI seventy
LA Sports. And you're home ofthe Dodgers. What's crack? And Sam?
How are you? What's going on? Gentlemen? Appreciate you as always.
(12:03):
You know, San Joaquin Valley iswell covered, So thank you for
the props for I'm proud to bedrug free in the San Joaquin Valley.
Now now, Sama, overall,we've been watching this Lakers stuff kind of
unfold and h well, I meanwe haven't talked to you about it,
but we went from Reddick to Hurleyto Reddick to uh Bronnie James and the
(12:26):
press conference today. How does itstrike you? Did you see all this
stuff happening beforehand the way it hasno? I mean, it strikes me
as the continuation of a fairly challengingoff season for the Lakers. Now that's
you know, I should kind ofqualify that comment getting Lebron to come back,
(12:48):
you know, And honestly, I'min the camp. I have no
problem at all with the Bronni Jamespickup. I think that's you know,
exciting and fun for the fans. We'll see, you know, how he
develops JJ higher. I'm fine withtoo. But the question going forward of
what do they do with this rosterand is there a big swing to be
had somewhere? And then you know, as you guys know, like some
(13:11):
of these quasi big swings that they'vebeen taking are you know, they're missing
the pitch, so you know, and then within that you've got seemingly a
bit of a disagreement between kind ofthe Lebron and a D side and the
question of should they go for itnow and really no matter what it costs
them with Lebron and a d kindof being the only untouchables on the team
(13:37):
versus the more measured Rob Polinka GenieBus approach, where they they've shown a
real reluctance to give up certain players, certain assets and trying to lean more
into you know, efficient contracts anddevelopment and those are those are two different
schools of thought and they're kind ofstraddling in between them right now. Sam
(13:58):
a full disclosed. Sure. Idon't know if you've been able to interpret
our line of questioning all the timeyou come on as to kind of where
we stand in this Lebron era ofLaker basketball, But quite plainly, we
don't like it. Don't like whatfeels like Lebron sort of co opting leadership
of his team. It has producedvery little. I know everyone wants to
(14:18):
point to the one championship, andyes, that's fantastic. It just feels
a little empty here because of whereit happened, how it happened, when
it happened, and every other yearbesides that has really been a bit of
a failure save winning playoff series twoyears ago to the conference finals. Otherwise
it's just felt kind of empty.Does it feel like he still has because
of these hires and the drafting Lebronya firm grip over, you know,
(14:41):
sort of the operations or at leastdictating terms of how they operate moving forward,
and will it be that way thenext three years? In your opinion,
it's funny because I understand why theappearances are that that's the case.
I don't think that's the case.I think it has been at times,
and it's been a little bit ofa a teeter totter experience, if you
(15:03):
will. You know, like thethe absolute apex of that pastory of that
kind of dynamic, if you will, is the Russell Westbrook trade where you
know, Rob was ready to tradeMontrez, Harrel and cal Kuzma to the
King for Buddy Healed and then andthe Kings thought it was done, and
(15:24):
they like one hundred percent thought itwas done, and then you pivot to
Westbrook. Will you pivoted because yourstars were making that call. Now,
since then, there's been you know, a correction at times, maybe an
overcorrection where you know, they didn'thire Tyler to be the coach because they
wouldn't give him the things he wanted. There's been other players this summer I
(15:46):
mean, Desonte Murray is a guyI think that those two guys would have
loved to play with. So youknow, there's a lot of no's that
have happened in Lebron's direction. Butyou know, like you said, then
you look at the head coach beingthe guy that he podcasted with, and
and the second round draft pick beinghis son. Uh, you know,
he obviously still has a fair amountof sway. Tough to ignore the evidence
(16:10):
of your eyes and ears in thatregard. They haven't hit the free agency
yet. Uh. The Great samamic is our guest on The Petrosen Money
Show. How do they make theroster better? Is there something Polenka can
do to make a move? Ishe? Is he savvy enough to do
that? I mean, look athis hair. I mean, between me
(16:30):
and JJ, they got the besthair in the In the front office,
I don't exactly. I think marketing, sponsorships on product and and you know
what gets the job done upstairs. But yeah, I mean, Damar the
Rosen is obviously the name becoming alittle bit more front and center, but
(16:51):
it's it's kind of a game ofmusical chairs where that's just because there's there's
only a couple of chairs left andthey're scrambling. You know, my colleague
get the athletic who does a greatjob covering the team. Jovan Buja wrote
a piece today where from an ex'sand o's standpoint, I thought laid out
a pretty good argument for why Damaris still a very good player. There
(17:14):
are fair concerns about his fit withinthe context of a Lebron ad team.
He's never been a prolific three pointshooter, his defense is questionable at the
Stageum's career. I mean, hewas never a two way player really,
so you know, that's a goodname, and you've got the LA time
and the fact that he is anabsolute bucket getter in every sense. But
(17:37):
they are running out of options, you know. I think there was real
excitement about the Klay Thompson possibility, and Clay obviously went a different way,
goes to Dallas, so I don'tknow what their board looks like from there,
but but nothing yet. Obviously weSam, we you know, and
I don't know if if you werepart of it, if it was leaked
to you as well, but itseemed like it was coming from from Rich
(18:00):
Paul or I don't know who postedit that Lebron would be willing to take
a pay cut, that he'd bewilling to take a pay cut if the
Lakers could improve the roster. Andthen there were three names included at least
that we're floating out there. Youmentioned Clay, and obviously the connection with
Michael makes a lot of sense aswell as father Michael Clay. James Harden,
(18:21):
Yonis Valanciunas was in there as well. They're all out and Harden got
thirty five million Clay. You know, some people would point to that saying,
wow, that's that's a pretty bighit for Lebron if he reached out
to him and he turned him down. And then the other one, Valentiunas
going to a fifteen win team inWashington instead of coming this way. Should
should we look at that as ared flag at all, that you've got
(18:42):
arguably the greatest player of his eraand one of the greatest of all time,
sort of maybe dropping or leaking thatplea out there that if he's willing
to take less money to try towin a championship, and nobody responding,
yeah, I don't think it's notgreat. I think it probably speaks to
a couple of things. You know. For one, you know, just
it was it was a genuine gestureon his part where you know, I've
(19:03):
certainly been told from people involved thatwithin the context of the talks that you
know, he did follow through onthat offer and it was appreciated, you
know, specifically the Clay situation. But I think to me, it's the
fact that the Lakers are not goodenough right now. I think in the
eyes of some players to justify orwarrant everything that comes with joining this particular
(19:30):
group. And I'm not talking necessarilyabout Lebron and ad although they are part
of it. But you know,it's playing for the Lakers. It's the
media scene around the Lakers. It'sthe history. Like I get the sense
that nobody thinks they're one guy awayif you're you know, Clay or Jonas
(19:51):
or or or Harden. I mean, Harden was never going to do that,
I don't think. But yeah,it's not so far. It's not
like the type of thing where youknow, folks are you know, back
in the day when when it seemedlike nobody would come play with Kobe for
a while. It's not necessarily thetone is not negative like it was back
then. But you know, it'slike you said, they're not saying yes,
(20:15):
and that's not a great reflection. It's yeah, it's great you brought
that up in that context because rememberthat was it that you know, I
think it was Ray Allen that maybehad dropped that somebody did right that no
one wanted to play with Kobe andthe Lakers were struggling to get those role
players to come out here. Ronour test ultimately date, of course,
he had his own baggage and thatended up ended up working out for him.
(20:36):
But in this case, I wonderif you just kind of hit on
it, is that why the Lakersare so desperate to sign Lebron to that
three year extension, because they lookat the landscape of the Western Conference and
recognize probably not a championship team, but having Lebron is a way to stay
relevant. I know they would neveradmit to that, but as someone who
covers this league nationally, is thatkind of how this looks? Yeah?
(21:00):
I think so. I mean,do they want to win, Yeah,
it's just a question of how badly. And the irony is I think that
I get the sense that Lebron andeven a d and we keep glossing over
a D and I keep getting toldlike Lebron's about to be forty years old,
AD is more relevant to the Lakers'plans than Lebron is at this point,
(21:22):
even though that seems counterintuitive. ButI think even those two guys are
wondering how intensely the organization truly wantsto win right now. And I do
think it can two things could betrue at once, right they can want
to win to some degree, butthey can also love the idea that Lebron
would retire in a Lakers jersey. But you know, if that was the
(21:45):
case, let's say he signed fortwo three years, this Lakers tenure will
have been, I believe, thelongest that he had with any team during
his career. You know, ifhe obviously split up the two Cleveland stops,
you know, and having him goout with the scoring title, having
him go out above forty thousand points, you know, the Bubble Championship,
(22:08):
even if folks want to put anasterix on it like it was a title,
and he delivered that got him tonumber seventeen. So yeah, I
think they are there there for thatthat kind of business. And that's the
thing with the Lakers. They needThey do need ratings. They have important
TV deals that you know, requireeyeballs, and they learned the hard way
(22:29):
during the Lonzo Ball Kuzma ingram era, when you were having to be patient
for quite a while to see ifthese kids could turn into anything. That
that's a tough road to go down. Sam Amick a hero of the people,
his casual charm. It really doesdo the trick in the world of
being an NBA insider. The Clippersdid not give Paul George what he wanted
(22:53):
and he goes to Philly and getsa big deal. Is there a way
they improved? Are they better offwithout Paul George? It seems weird to
say, what did you make ofthat situation? I mean, this is
just me talking. I would argue, because I had really lost any faith
(23:14):
in the ability of that group toactually turn into a title contender. I
think, yeah, I would arguethat they're better off. Now. That's
not a flight to Paul, becauseI love the move for Philly. It's
a gamble. He's thirty four. You're gonna pay him a ton of money
when he's thirty eight. But thealternative for Philly was Joel Embiid surrounded by
(23:37):
literally Tyrese Maxey and one other playerwhose name is escaping me, who was
a twenty two year old. Youknow, that was the roster. That's
all they had. And so PaulGeorge, you know, gives them a
longer runway with Joel Embiid and youat least get a season to see how
that looks. But for the Clippers, you've already seen how this looks.
(23:57):
They fallen short consistent Lea. Iwasn't around them a ton last year,
but man, I tell you thetimes I was around them, the vibe
in the culture was not impressive interms. It wasn't it wasn't really negative.
It wasn't I'm not trying to sayit was toxic by any mean.
It just it felt like you wouldexpect with a bit of a mercenary kind
(24:18):
of feel with a bunch of olderplayers who thought that it would be,
you know, kind of lightning ina bottle when they all came together,
and it really wasn't. And andfrom there they were just kind of playing
ball, and some nights they wouldn'tplay very well, and then they'd play
well, and it wasn't really inspiring. And I don't see that changing or
you know, don't think that wouldhave changed if he came back. So
(24:40):
now they get to operate like areal team, meaning that they get out
from underneath all of the luxury taxrestrictions. They come with me and in
the second apron if they would havepaid Paul so a fairly affordable contract for
James Harden, you know, andwe'll see what they do from here.
But they have options, which isyou gut know and pro sports like a
lot of times, selling hope isbetter than you know than selling just an
(25:04):
underwhelming kind of entity of a teamthat we saw last year and they had
a little hope again where they havesome options here. Well, I'll tell
you this, it's a busy timeand Sam Amy came on and we milked
them like a Wisconsin cow. Wesure appreciate you, Sam, thanks for
doing it, and have a wonderfulrest of the summer. We'll talk to
(25:25):
you soon. Thank you, guys. Take there be good, but not
too soon. We'll leave you alonefor a while. You know, that
was where you put in a lotof work there. All right, We'll

right, Matt, just a fewdays before this country's most patriotic holiday,
Your Dead Guy Birthday of the Dayhonors a great American who was not afraid
(26:30):
to tell the Nazis to go toHell. Anthony Clement mccaulliffe was born on
July second, eighteen eighty nine,in DC, Irish heritage. Went to
West Virginia University before getting commissioned toWest Point in nineteen seventeen. An accelerated
leadership program graduated at the end ofWorld War One, and then after graduating
(26:52):
from Artillery School, which is afield of study that has fallen off with
the youth today, mcculliff moved up, Yeah, I mean moved up the
ranks in the Army for the nextsixteen years United States Army Command and General
Staff College. Graduated that in fortyIn forty one, just month before Pearl
Harbor, he was promoted a lieutenantcolonel, where he supervised the development of
(27:18):
new technology like the Bazuka and thejeep that's not smoking pole like us.
No, that's some serious bit ofbazuka. Come on now. As the
Division Commander of Artillery for the onehundred and first Airborne, he parachuted into
Normandy on D Day for Operation Overlord. In June of nineteen forty four,
(27:40):
he landed in a glider in theNetherlands for Operation Market Garden, and in
September of that year he really gota cracking in the European theater. So
for all the biggest operations in thetheater, Tony mack was there. But
his most legendary contribution to the warour effort was still to come. In
(28:03):
December nineteen forty four, the GermanArmy launched a surprise attack in the forest
of Belgium that would be known asthe Battle of the Bulge. Oh that's
a rough one. That's a roughgoal. As the attack began, McAuliffe
was left in command of the onehundred and first Airborne and its attached troops.
The Germans advanced. They surrounded thecity of Bastone and encircled the one
(28:29):
hundred and first defending the city.It was a desperate situation for the Screaming
Eagles. On December twenty second, the German general in command of the attacking
troops, General Heinrich von Lutwitz, dispatched a party of four soldiers to deliver
a message to the Americans. Thisis the message, okay to the USA
(28:49):
commander of the encircled town of Baston. The fortune of war is changing this
time. The USA forces in andnear Bastone have been encircled by strong German
armored units. There's only one possibilityto save the encircled USA troops from total
annihilation, and that is the honorablesurrender of the encircled town. In order
(29:12):
to think it over, a termof two hours will be granted, beginning
with the presentation of this note.If this proposal should be rejected, one
German artillery corps and six heavy battalionsare ready to annihilate the USA troops in
and near beston all the serious civilianlosses caused by this artillery would not correspond
(29:37):
with the well known American humanity theGerman commander. According to eyewitnesses, President
mcculluff received the German message, readit, crumpled it into a ball,
and muttered, oh, nuts, before throwing it into a trash can and
walking off. As the Germans awaitedthe American's formal response, mcculluff's officers search
(29:59):
for the suitable language to convey hisfeelings. Finally, it was suggested that
his initial response was appropriate and summedup the situation. Well, see,
he did not swear, He neverswore, so nuts was part of his
regular vocabulary. Ah, like aPhilip Rivers type thing there. Yes,
the official reply was typed and deliveredto the German contingent to the German commander
