Remember if you're in the Greater LosAngeles area, it's not just the
Petros and Money Show. You canstream live. You can get the podcast
wherever you prefer to procure. Butthe one thing the iHeartRadio app gives you,

(01:10):
along with the subscription of the podcastand listening to us on demand,
it is the ability to stream theshow live in the moment when you can't
find an AM radio to listen toUS Live. You can listen to US
Live there anywhere in the world. If you are in the Greater LA area,
though, you can listen to Dodgergames. And that's going to be
important because you very well may beat work all week long when the Dodgers
are playing Tomorrow, Dodgers on deckat three the Dodger Phillies first pitch from

(01:34):
the Galpin Motors broadcast booth at fouro'clock PM. And don I don't know
how much baseball you and the familybeen watching so far. I kind of
start now, man, like,I watched a couple of games this weekend.
Yeah, now that the drafts overand everything, I have time.
But I watched I watched yesterday fora while. How great was Oral and
Mookie fun? Unbelievable, so funto have that show so interesting. It's

(01:57):
fun but interesting to listen. Andwhen there's intelligent conversation between two really,
really good players. Yeah, Mooky, you can look MOOKI if you've ever
stood next to him, you're like, how does that happen? Right?
Like, he is the same sizeas me. It's very strange. But
then you hear him speak and you'relike, oh, yeah, this guy's
just smarter than everybody. He's afreaking leg up when it comes to understanding

(02:21):
and knowing what's coming. And that'ssomething that always I think when you get
a good baseball broadcaster, because thereis so much downtime, yep, it
makes it you can incredible to listento. I'm almost jealous of Oral in
the sense that he has so muchtime to really expand on thoughts and really
dig deep into him. And I'vetold Tim for years how much I really

(02:45):
really enjoy and I hope Dodger fansunderstand, and I can say that's because
I've been in the business for twentyplus years. Just how good Oral herscheizer
is. He is really really good. He reminds me a ton and I
would I don't know how many peoplein LA would view this as a compliment,
but they should. He reminds meso much of Steve Stone. I

(03:05):
grew up listening to Steve Stone whenI was a little kid on the cub
broadcast with Harry Carey and former CyYoung winner. You know, great pitcher,
but there's something about the pitcher analysisbecause they're involved in every single play
when they're on the field and howthey know where everyone's standing and where they
need to put the ball and wherethe batter wants to put It makes for
such a great listen compared to anybodyelse. But yes, oral fantastic.

(03:30):
If you miss the mookie they're replayingit, it's worth maybe checking out like
Sports in La Tonight or something andseeing even though the Dodgers got blown out
yesterday, Dodgers Philly tomorrow is whatwe're saying. And this a modello meet
you a lot of Monday on thePetros and Money Show. Before we get
to the quick kits, let's getyour final hour. Fun fact. It's
fun effect. It's the yeah we'rethree fun fact, all right, don

(03:53):
as we come upon the Olympics areupon us, they are mere days away.
Did you know the US has neverwon Olympic medals for the Summer Olympics
in just three sports, as in, no gold, silver, or bronze.
Now, there are many a sportthat they have not won a gold

(04:14):
in, but zero medals in threesports. Will this be the year?
You tell me if you believe thiswill be the year for the US in
handball? No, okay, we'llgo with a no. There will this
be the year, and I canjust visualize these Olympic events going at this

(04:36):
in no way badminton, No,there's a reason why they haven't. Yes,
and it ain't for US. Andtable tennis, ping pong. That's
a little surprising to me, really, I think, I mean, I

(04:57):
always feel like it's Japan versus Koreaversus. Well, badmin's not a universal,
universally popular sport in the US.It should be, though, badminton.
Yeah, the table tennis, Ifeel like is. But who's going
to take it to the level whereyou make it to the Olympics. Yeah,
handball. Handball's not you know, handball once you finished third grades over

(05:18):
right, I'll say, though,I will say, and I was when
I was living I was kind ofbordering sort of Los Angeles there. When
I lived in the Fairfax District, there were portions of where I live that
had handball courts that were populated bya segment of Los Angeles society, And
holy crap, dude, those dudesgot after it and it was freaking gnarmly.

(05:41):
But those three let's see if wecan maybe supress is lacrosse an Olympic
sport? Now? It will bein twenty eight, twenty eight, twenty
eight, So here will be thefirst Olympic lacrosse games, right, how
soon before pickleball becomes Very soon?I would I would not be surprised if
that does not make it in.But are we here? Is it an
American thing or is that an internationalthing? I think it's international. Right,

(06:04):
By the time they actually make anOlympic sport, it'll be an international.
Is this the year for break dancingor is that it's an Olympic sport?
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, let'seliminate that and bringing pickleball. There's
no doubt pickleball will be at somepoint, no doubt. Good luck finding
a tennis court these days. Manythey are all freaking pickleball courts. And

(06:25):
if they're not, they've converted himto a pickle ball court. All right,
Kate, let's go quick hits forthe MS. Quick Hitchlet make it
quick, y'all. Yeah. Itis brought to you by San Antonio Winery,
Los Angeles. Zip, savor andcelebrate with your friends and family today

(06:45):
at San Antonio Winery, Los Angeles. Delicious varieties for whatever your palate requires
or desires. All right, Dom, we can started with the Dodgers.
Yeah, fifty six and thirty six, seven and a half game lead in
the NL West. They are offtonight, have a six game roach to
be a huge series with the Philliesstarting tomorrow in Philadelphia. Yeah. Both.

(07:12):
If you look across the NL,and we discussed this with both Bob
and David Bass said Bob Nightingale andDavid Basse, all the teams are struggling.
Like there is no team that ison fire right now. Every team
that was at the top and waspulling away has struggled as of late.
And his Vass likes to say,if you go back for the last footing
games, there are only two gamesof the five hundred, which a bit

(07:35):
disconcerting. Is that normal though?Kate's like, is it like kind of
like the NBA the last couple ofweeks before the All Star break team starts
snailing it in. Yeah, they'relike ready to break. I mean as
good as the Podjays were playing thelast two weeks, they're still seven and
a half games back and they wereon fire for like seven of ten they
won, but still they can't catchany ground on the Dodge and you Darvish,

(07:57):
now on the Island definitely of thosepesky pots. The Dodger six players
selected to the National League All Starroster. No surprise with Otani don but
yeah, I guess you look atthe rest of them and they kind of
got everybody in there. Yeah.I think ti Oscar Hernandez making it.
He deserved it, for sure.I think some were arguing that he should

(08:18):
start in the All Star Game asgood as he's he was a finalist.
Yeah, and he's got nineteen homeruns, sixty RBI's, and he's excited
about going to the All Star Game. Me, it's a lot, you
know, this is what we worefor obviously, coming in here, big
city, big team, huge fanbase, and be able to do the

(08:39):
things that they has picked me todo to help the team. That is
most important for me. I know, it's great to go to the Will
Star Game, but being able tohelp the team and the things that they
need me to do, they wantme to do, and and got it
done the first half of the seasonobviously. Yeah, we still got a

(09:00):
week to go from the first hut, but so far he's been great.
Mookie, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, Tyler Glass, now we already mentioned
last week made the team, Butso all the guys you would expect save
Gavin Stone. Stone Boner sadly getsexcluded despite having better numbers than Tyler glass
Now except for innings pitched. Weplayed the audio on postgame Dodge Talk yesterday,

(09:24):
but the video Dave Roberts going aroundand introducing the All Stars to all
the players and announcing it. Thevideo had Gavin Stone right in the background.
He was right in the background behindDavid Why do you think he glass
Now got picked ahead of him?Or why not both? They should both
get in and hopefully there's an injury. Not hopefully there's an injury, but
somebody wants to skip it. Yeah, yeah, someone to you know is
pitching too late and it's like,oh yeah, I'm not going to throw

(09:46):
glass now, got it? Iwould guess because he leads the league in
strikeouts, He's got like fifteen moreinnings, his whip is way lower,
and really he's just had two crappyoutings last two times out. Otherwise his
numbers would be in the conversation,is the best in the league. If
the Dodgers had the best record inthe NL, he probably would have gotten

(10:07):
into. Yeah. I think hadhe not had that bad outing his last
time out. If he gets toten wins instead of nine and he had
that that rough go this last timeout, if he's the he's gotta be
in. I think at ten wins, but I don't know. Can you
really put seven Dodgers on instead ofsix? And it's not like you're leaving
any of those other guys out.Gavin Stone arms cross sitting in the background.
You think his name is going toget called in a dozen It's like

(10:28):
the Stone bone. And by theway, nobody tuning into the All Star
Game, no offense, Gavin,We love you, we would, but
people are going to tune in tosee Mookie Bets. Yeah, Freddie Freeman,
you bet you will. Smith toOskar Hernandez leading the league in home
runs. Oh yeah, Gavin Stonecoming out in the seventh inning. Here,

(10:48):
throw a couple of pitches. Thirtytwo first time All Stars this year.
Yeah, record nineteen All Stars underthe age of twenty seven, and
good on baseball. Making sure Paul'sskis gets in. Yeah, that's a
good one. Ellie Daily Cruz getsin, Bobby Wood Junior gets in.
Just to name a few young starsin baseball scheme. Smart had to get

(11:09):
skins in there, even because Ithink technically he didn't qualify, right,
he didn't have enough for the starts. I think, oh he got to
ten starts. I think maybe hedidn't just squeeze it in there. Uh.
The Angels thirty seven to fifty two. They host the Rangers, the
defending Major League Baseball champs, tonightto the NBA don where Summer League is
happening. Yeah, Brownie James didnot play in their second game in the

(11:30):
Lakers California Classic Summer League game yesterdaydue to trace swelling in his left knees.
Expected to play on Wednesday when theLakers take on Khalil Where. Yeah,
the Miami Heat twenty six and elevenyesterday file blocks right, yep,
No five blocks in the first game. Was the first game, but twenty
six points and eleven rebounds yesterday.I texted his agent, said, my

(11:52):
work is done here. I'm retiring, right, damn it, I want
him. I'm going out on top. What what is trace swelling? Don
I assume a man that's had someknee shoes You did anybody ever diagnosed?
Meaning it's not swollen, but there'ssome swelling in it. I think is
what that means, cautionary kind ofthing pretty much. In an interview with
ESPN, lebron surprisingly said that Bronniedoes not care about all the criticism that

(12:15):
has thrown his way. He doesnot care about nobody's He doesn't even listen
to that stuff. He's like thecomplete opposite of his dad. His dad
will say something, Yeah, Bronniedoes not care like me personally. When
I was coming up, I hadno choice. I literally had no choice.
I had to make it out likeI had no choice. I had
to make it out for me,my mom, my family. Bronnie has

(12:37):
all the choices in the world. So it's like a whole other people don't
understand how hard that is in thecommitment for him to be coming out of
heart surgery less than a year ago, for him to be able to be
in the NBA. That's the kidis He's he's special, but he doesn't
care. He doesn't another, itdoesn't bother. Yeah. It's a wide
ranging interview with Dave mcminnimon where hesays, I get butt hurt and I

(13:01):
get upset about these things. Bronnidoesn't care. Well, here's my thing,
Matt, and I'm not on socialmedia like you guys. So maybe
I'm speaking out a turn, butI've never felt like, well, at
least from where I sit, it'snever been criticism of Bronni. It's been
criticism of the reality of the situationand that I do think in two,

(13:22):
three, four years he's going tobe a good player, but he's been
given all this stuff. So whatseems to be criticism isn't really criticism of
Bronni. It's just criticism of howthis whole thing's played out. I think
it's criticism was Dad is what itis really Ultimately, it's if you like
lebron, you defend the hell outof it. If you don't like Lebron,
you pile the hell on. Andthat just seems to be where the

(13:46):
line is drawn. But nobody that'sgiven, even throwing shade in Bronnie's direction,
is like, yeah, I reallyreally want to give it to this
nineteen year old man. I reallywant to make them uncomfortable and make them
miserable. That's not what it isat all. So you said, I
mean I did. I did threeUSC games last year that Brownie played in,
and it was just when when Italked about him during the course of
the game, it was just meevaluating him as a player and where he's

(14:07):
at right now. Look, somepeople are farther ahead than others. Some
people have better skill sets than others. He needed to go back to college
for a year or two to reallybe a legitimate NBA player at this point,
but he can still get there bydeveloping, playing in the G League
for a year or more and eventually, you know, hopefully he gets there.
I'd like to think when you considerhow many guys went back this year

(14:31):
when they're like, yeah, youare not going to be a first round
pick. You're gonna if you getpicked at all, you're going to to
second. We had three guys goback to school. Get me out.
I'll go take the million bucks andgo back to school. I'm good.
Yep, give it a go.Next year, the Clippers play their first
Vegas Summer League game on Friday night. They will take on the Denver Nuggets,
and we certainly dug into it deepearlier Don Paul George as a podcast

(14:54):
he said he never want to It'swhat they always say. Didn't want to
leave, but he said, well, to some degree, said he felt
disrespective that talks broke down that heeither wanted a no trade or a fourth
year. They wouldn't give him either, so he decided to move on to
Philadelphia. Well, and I think, look, since Steve Balmer's owned the
Clippers, he's always been very generousand always willing to do certain things.

(15:16):
But I think this is where yousee, you know, the fallout if
you will from this second apron, that's all can go over it. You
can't go over it, or youcannot improve your team or improve your team,
or it's virtually impossible to improve yourteam. Yeah, and as we
again, I know I'm a littlebit more negative about it than a lot

(15:37):
of folks, But yeah, PaulGeorge, you can't have a no trade
class. You've averaged fifty games ayear. You cannot have a no trade
clause. If they need to moveoff that money, they're gonna happen.
There's only one in the league,Bradley Beal. Yeah, well now technically
two yeah, run, that's right. Somehow got a fifteen percent trade kicker
even though he's got a no tradeclass. Was able to put that in

(15:58):
there as well. But if Ido agree you went, you're gonna have
to pay me an extra fifteen millionbucks. Team USA is practicing in Las
Vegas. Anthony Edwards says, whenthey get to Paris, he's the number
one. I'm still the number oneup shot. Yeah, I mean y'all
might look at it differently. Idon't look at it no differently. Hey,

(16:21):
I just go out there and bemyself, shoot my shots, play
defense, and you know they gotto fit in and play around me.
That's how I feel. I wonderhow the other players feel about it.
Listen, I'm on Team Edwards.Man, I love them. No,
I need too, you know,I mean I just love that. Yeah
whatever, Hey you Lebron. Well, part of the reason he's so good
at an early age is a confidence. And whether it's rational or irrational doesn't

(16:42):
matter. But you just hope thatsomething like that doesn't start driving guys apart,
like, well, what are youtalking about? Man? Like I'm
the number one? No, I'mthe number one. You know it's Team
USA. Yeah. The three letterson the chest end of the soccer don
And I'll be honest, as Iwatched it all how day, weekend long,
the Copa America and the Euro Theonly thing that well, there is

(17:04):
one thing that stood out above allothers. And that is the Kates when
the World Cup was in Cutter orQatar, whichever way you prefer to pronounce
it. It seems like whichever wayyou do pronounce it, somebody else will
come in and say, it's notGutar, it's Cutter. When you say
Cutter, they say those cutter,it's Qatar, You're racist. But Kates
would always play the Fox television stingerlike that. They would go to break

(17:27):
from the World Cup and Cutter becausewe would just be in the middle of
a conversation and Kates would just dropthe just not stop, you have a
conversation. He would drop that.In first semifinal game Tuesday in Germany gonna
be France versus Spain, and thesecond will come Wednesday, England versus Netherlands.

(17:51):
A lot of p K action goingin the Euros. In the Copa
America, it's going to be Argentinaaverted disaster after Messy missed that first lays
prized after all this time, becauseit doesn't happen very often where the guy
doesn't score on a PK. Whythey haven't backed it up a couple feet
and how would that change the result? And I'd say dramatically. You know,

(18:14):
if you're a goalie, you don'thave to make your move just in
terms of theater, and you know, because you just assume the guy is
going to make it every time, and if he doesn't, the goalie guessed
completely right and somehow got a handon or the guy you know, crapped
himself and missed the goal altogether, like that dude from Switzerlan And that was
like the worst penalty kick you everseen in your life. Yeah, so,
dude, I think it would bea little more dramatic, a little

(18:36):
more interesting. You backed that guykicking kicking the ball like two three feet.
That's a good point by you. That's a good point by you.
Domoklin, our buddy Rob Stone atFox, he's got a big beef with
this stutter step. Yes, Iagree with that too. If you're a
goalie and you see a guy move, you've got to try to read which
way he's moving. I don't likethe stutter step that one. I think
it was the second goal of Argentina. Dude, guy was like, yeah

(19:00):
he was and then hit the brakes. Yeah, his leg was already going
forward. Any stop. Yeah, that's not okay, by the way,
I'm aton on that my first remembranceof any sports whatsoever as a five year
old, and this will this willtell you how much our world has changed
in terms of how we approach yousports. My first experience that I remember

(19:26):
as a athlete five years old, okay, five years old, five year
old soccer. And think about whatfive year old soccer is now with you're
playing five year old soccer? Yeah, okay, five year olds are playing
on a full field. Peeks todecide it as five year olds pressures on
kid, guess who is the goalie? Me? Well, you got those

(19:48):
levers done. You know, you'vegot the longest levers of anything. But
think about that, five years oldin nineteen seventy five, pek's to decide
it, and now they don't evenkeep score. That's a little gnarly,
that's true. It's just hey,way to go girls, Way to go
boys. Yeah, good job outthere by all the youth. And I
don't think second place got a trophyeither, Like we're playing for the trophy,
did you choker? Come on,yeah, that's exactly right. Of

(20:12):
course you didn't. And those areyour quick hits. We're here until seven
o'clock we'll hand it over to DavidVessay. He will have off day Dodger
talk coming up at seven that trustsome money. Hey, I'm five seven
LA Sports were live everywhere on theiHeartRadio app. Remember, if you can't

(20:33):
find an AM band, you canalways listen to us live anywhere in the
world by streaming through the iHeart RadioApple so where you can download the podcast.
No Dodgers today, but tomorrow theywill take on the Phillies and you
can listen to that on the iHeartRadio app as well. If you're in
the Greater LA area. That'll bea first pitch at four o'clock. And
Don joining us right now. Youcan follow him on social media Twitter,
easiest way to get a link toall of his stuff that he does for

(20:56):
the USA Today. Bob Nightingale atb Nightingale and Bob, we always appreciate
when you join us. And we'lljust kind of start with I don't know
if you want to call it aswoon or just sort of mediocre play,
but your thoughts on the Dodgers prettymuch playing five hundred ball over the last
month to five weeks. Yeah,I mean just a very slungish I mean
Obviously they got the big uh,they got the big elite and everything else.

(21:18):
I have to worry about winning thedivision because we still worry about them
as far as you know, whenthe same thing happens like a year ago
or two years ago, you don'thave that uh you know that. But
does it? Does it speak toBob how deep this team is that they're
still have that big of a leadin the division and they've had this many
major guys go down for parts ofthe season. Oh it does. I

(21:41):
mean very deep team. It's beenlike all these teams. I mean there's
Atlanta, you know, knocking thedoor of first place. They've been stayed
up, buildup, you know withthe position players. But yeah, Dodgers
are very very deep. That's whyyou know they're really you know, both
always the regular season, but youneed those big those big guns come on
Homer and that's what knocked him outlast year, you know, and the

(22:03):
Diamondbacks had all their guys you know, well rested. So that's that's the
one concern is Okay, we's Kershawcan do when he comes back? Well,
Walker Dueler, you revert back toform, which I wanted to look
back when he comes back, Bobwhen it comes to to show. Hey,
it's the you know in granted,he's been here for six years prior,

(22:25):
right in our backyard, a coupleof minutes down the road. Yet
all the Dodger fans that are gettingtheir first look at him, it almost
seems like they're seeing something for thefirst time that they've never seen before,
even though he's been performing at thislevel, if not even higher because he
was pitching down in Anaheim. Haveyou does this season look different to you
this first half of the season, just the mammoth home runs, doing it

(22:47):
in the Dodger uniform. Does itlook different than the last three that we're
all MVP worthy or and two ofthem produced MVPs. I think just with
the offense. I mean, heis a much better offensive player this year
without pitching. It's kind of rangesthe question like, Okay, you know,
one day, what's going to happen. Uh, Well, he'd give
up pitching and just be a uh, you know, offensive player, so

(23:10):
uh but yeah, that part isdifferent. But otherwise, you know,
you're talking to like you said,he was in a backyard is like going
from the Cubs to the White Soxor you know, Yankees the Mets.
You know, that's what I think. So we'll see what happens, uh
in the future. Pitching, Istill think you want to, you know,
keep pitching and give a try,you know, one more time.
But I think the Ben and butternow, as everybody's saying, is his

(23:30):
offense be curious to see is youknow, hey, one day, whether
he's the Dodgers, you know, right fielder or or center film. What's
crazy is is I was watching thegame the other night. I don't follow
it as much as you guys do, but I almost forgot that he pitched
because he's been hitting at such ahigh clip. I'm like, oh,
yeah, that's right, he usedto pitch. So so, Bob,

(23:51):
what you're saying is there you thinkthat it will come to a discussion about
him doing one or the other,or do you think he'll next year continue
to try and do both. Ithink definitely sedge both next year, and
but I think, you know, eventually he's a hitter and we see how
dominy is. Uh. He's avery good, you know, very good
pitcher, but offensively, you know, off off the charts. As we're

(24:12):
saying and doing this, you know, we're coming from Timmy John surgery.
He's not even healthy, so uhyeah, I would think he's still he's
still going to fitch for you know, a couple of years, but eventually
he's just get me offensive player. You know, you know what what this
looks like, Bob, and I'msure you've been around to LA enough to

(24:33):
know what it feels like. Isas great as it is the seven and
a half game lead in the divisionand the just spectacular performances that oh Tani
is putting together night in and nightout, we still have a healthy amount
of people that are like, don'tcare, get me to October, because
I've seen this team win one hundredand one hundred and five games, one
hundred and ten games, and everyOctober we're disappointed. What I know,

(24:56):
without projecting health, it's hard tokind of figure it out out. But
as you look at the National Leaguelandscape, how do you feel about the
way this team is built they're swingingthe bats and what they might look like
in a postseason series. Well, you worry about the postseason just because of
the of the fishing questions, andthat's a hunt of them. The last
company in particular last year, Uhso I think that, you know,

(25:18):
it's gonna be the same thing. It's like, you know, hey,
what shoam Oly gonna look like? You know what they uh, what's Saint
Kershaw gonna look like? I justdon't know. I think they could get
some they'll get some bulks and helptoo, uh you know, for that
matter, any of it's kind ofuh the big drop off after big top
of Atlanta. So I think thelegitimate question is right. You know,

(25:40):
right now, on paper the bestteam in the nationally is is Philadelphia and
Atlanta's not far behind. Speaking ofthat, Bob, the trade deadlines in
three weeks, and word on thestreet as the Rangers could be sellers.
They've got starting pitching they could tradethat they could trade to the Dodgers.
What does that trade market look like? And do you think that the Dodgers
will continue you to add or atleast try and add the starting pitching.

(26:02):
I think you would like to getin our starter. You know, if
the Rangers don't turn and they do, tell you know, they'll like they
made evolved and be perfect. Thenhe had Sureger, I'm not sure Surgeon
would when the way back there,he's got to pull no a train pause,
like I get nade evolved, hewould be great. Uh, you
know, and I've got their eyeson Crochet, So I mean I should

(26:23):
have the life size. You justdon't know how much you can pitch in
the second half. And then Ijust I mean the webside spent. I
sent him down on the second half, so I think it sort of have
him pishing in the uh pission ofWolfton. I'm not sure how much he
has left to pick. You know, pitches the charter in October? What
about? You know, just theway the playoffs look right now, Bob,

(26:47):
and what you think ultimately will becomebuyers and sellers, And you know
what three weeks is kind of whatwe're looking at. I mean the National
League wild card you got all theway down to like Washington where you could
almost make a case that the teamsare in it. And even if you
go seven eight deep, you've gotteams that are only two two and a
half out. Do you expect they'llthey'll take stock of how many teams they'd

(27:07):
have to jump to get into thatwild card spot and still be sellers.
Do you think we're going to havea lack of assets available I think a
lot of assets and you only hadlike five teams out of the ranks and
uh, and that's it. Soit's a seller's market. So someone's gonna
have to overpay for sure to getsome of you guys. Uh. So
you know, we don't have asolo on the market or a rollin rollin

(27:30):
on the market. So you know, there's some nice pieces out there,
but I don't think there's one guyout there. So okay, that's going
to make it's a little tears contender. Last thing for you, and we
certainly appreciate it. You can followthem on Twitter at the night and Yale
the All Star Game that is comingup. We're going to get out of
here after this week for the MidsummerClassic. Just kind of where where you

(27:52):
feel like taking inventory of the AllStar Game is. Certainly when you have
someone with the superstar caliber of showHaale timing, it's going to bring eyes
on it one of his at bats. But do we feel do you feel
like the All Star Game is ina healthy spot right now? It certainly
feels better than it did, sayten years ago. Yeah, unless it
is a healthy spot. The troubleis the pitching is so dominant now.

(28:12):
I think, you know, we'restarting to get some bloring games, you
know, one zero, two toone. You'll watch a pitcher come in
and he'll shrek out, you know, two of the three guys he faces,
and go on and on, soyou don't have a big slug best.
I know, they juice up theballs everything else to try and make
it that way, but it hasn'twhere it's out. But you know,
I still think the players will tryhard and stuff. I still think of

(28:33):
all the you know, the allstar type games, you know, Pro
Bowl, NBA All Star game, hockey, and this is still the best
one. And you know you're payingguys to win games too, So I'm
not sure how much more an answersenting you can get it. What you
don't want is the guys to backout and say, you know what,
right ahead of time off, wesee that a little bit, believes it's

(28:53):
not widespread. Yeah, and hopefullywe'll continue the Dodgers with six All Stars
making their way out to the game, and of course second half of the
season gonna be worth watching and payingattention to Bob Nightingale's social media feeds as
the trade deadline will be with usin about three weeks and we all expect
the Dodgers to make some sort ofmove. Bob. We appreciate it and

(29:14):
look forward to talking again down theroad. All right, buds here,
thank you Bob. All right, there we go, Spob Nightingale of the
USA today, Remember Dodgers off today, Full four hours here with Don McClain,
and we will get back at ittomorrow with the Dodgers Phillies at four
o'clock coming up next, one lastsegment of full four Hours today before David
Vesse comes along with Off Day DodgerTalk, will do your dead and a

(29:37):
live guy Birthday of the Day next. That's gonna do it for us,
A solid four hour marathon with thegreat Don McClain as we get ready for
our super flex alert rest of theweek. Not a single show. We'll
be broadcast past three pm all weeklong. Yeah right, we have.

(30:00):
We got a one hour show justme and Kate's on Thursday from one to
two. We got one to twothirties and we've got one one to three,
really pushing it, really pushing it. A good night's sleep tonight before
for two hours that day exactly right, Let's not forget you know the one
hour and may just not show up. I may just call in, say,
Kate's you know you can do anhour. I've just decided, Oh,
come in, Kates. There yougo. Oh look at this done.

(30:22):
I have the dead guy birthday ofthe day. Thought for a second
there I had the a live guybirthday of the day. But it'll scare
me like that. Man, I'mthe alive guy. Yeah, I do
not give it to me, Kates, because this is a rare like to
buy the world a home, arare long inclusion of a former Confederate soldier.

(30:42):
Typically you steer away from that, you know, when it comes to
showcasing somebody. But one hundred andninety three would have been John Pemberton today.
Born in Knoxville, raised in Rome. George a smart guy or in
his medical degree when he was justnineteen, specialized in chemistry, became a
surgeon. Rough deal back then. You know, Yeah, decide, maybe
the blood letting and the sawing offof the limbs is not for me.

(31:03):
So I'm just gonna open this drugstore over here, a little apothecary,
as we mentioned, took a swordof the chest addicted to morphine painkillers were
experimented with. First recipe was theeasy to remember and rolls off the tongue
Doctor Tuggle's compound syrup of globe flower. First thing he tried to push out
there, but unfortunately they had atoxic plant button bush as an active ingredient,

(31:26):
So he kept tweaking. Settled ona combination of cola nut, coca
wine, and damiana. He calledit Pemberton's French Wine Cola, and it
was so well received in Rome,Georgie, he took it down to Atlanta
sold it to help ease what heclaimed was depression, potentially curing drug addiction.

(31:47):
Target was the ladies who lived asedentary life. It had booze.
So eighteen eighty six rolls around andtemperance legislation shows up. So he's got
to get an alternative to his Frenchwine cola, something on alcoholics. So
he and his pal Willis Venable, not Will Venable, combined based syrup with
carbonated water by accident, but hetook a sip and was like, eh,
I think this might work. CocaCola was the name that another pal,

(32:12):
Frank Mason Richardson Frank Mason Robinson pardonme, came up with Frank also
wrote out that fancy script, theSpencerian script that read Coca Cola they still
used today. Pemberton, though, could not resist keeping the cure all theme.
It was marketed as Coca Cola theTemperance Drink. The first sales came
at Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta on Mayeight, eighteen eighty six, for five

(32:36):
cents of glass, and he pushedit as a carbonated water is good for
your health care for many diseases, including morphine addiction, indigestion, nerve disorders,
headaches, and impotence. Johnny, however, right his things start rolling,
fell ill, the ild savor ofthe chest, you know, sick
and desperty. Began selling his rightsto the formula to his business partners to
fuel his morphine addiction. But hewas wise in to recognize, you know,

(33:01):
this thing is going to be quitepopular. So in fact, we'll
leave a chef on my son,Charlie, one third of the company I
will bequeath to you son, Charlie. Charlie, also a drug addict,
was like, no, father,Instead, we'll take the money. So
he sold it all and he gaveCharlie his three hundred dollars. No way.

(33:23):
Yeah, in today's money, that'sabout ten grand. He would die
like three or four weeks later fromstomach cancer. Charlie would die of an
overdose. And that is the storyof Coca Cola. Wow. John Pemberton,
Happy birthday, all right, Matt, you're a live guy. Birthday
of the day. Beating out KevinBacon beck in Chinese basketball star Wang Jiji

(33:44):
Oh, I remember him like sevenfoot seven or something. Happy seventy fifth
birthday to Wolfgang Puck. Okay, born and raised in Austria, started formal
training as a chef at fourteen. He worked in some of France's best restaurants
until he was twenty four and movedto the United States in seventy three.
He ended up in Indianapolis, ofall places. Well, you're gonna have

(34:06):
to ask that question when you're there. Yeah, a couple of weeks done,
but not for long, man.He wasn't there for very long.
Two years later, in nineteen seventyfive, he came to la and gained
the attention of the Hollywood elite. In eighty two, at the age of
thirty three, he opened his firstrestaurant, Spago. Sorry, is that
still there, I would imagine,so right there on sunset. I still
remember my first trip to Spago. It was a big deal, like in

(34:29):
the nineties going to Spago. Yeah. He's opened dozens of restaurants across the
US, in Europe, Asia,in the Middle East, among them,
his flagship restaurants Spago in Beverly Hills, Cut in Beverly Hills, Been There
and Singapore have all earned Michelin stars. That's great now, but I've been

(34:49):
to the Vaughns where I pick upthe Wolfgang Pucks frozen pizza, so i
and the airport and everywhere else exactlyright. Other ventures include Wolfgang Puck Catering,
which provide restaurant quality cuisine for suchhigh high profile events as the Academy
Awards Governor's Ball. He won EmmyAwards for his television show Wolfgang Puck's Cooking
Class that was on the Food Network, and he has written seven cookbooks and

(35:14):
syndicated column appears in thirty newspapers acrossthe US and Canada. What's the newspaper
exactly? You know what? Though, there's probably so. I take my
dog on a walk most days, like two and a half miles, so
I probably you know, we livein a you know hous there big on
our neighbor so there's not a millionhouses. But I'm gonna guess I pass

(35:34):
on the way all the way around. I probably passed fifty houses, sixty
houses. Maybe I would say there'sstill fifteen La Times and Wall Street journals
in the driveway. Yeah, Ilove it. I'm in the same exact
and I can name the houses becauseevery and I just thought of it today
as I was walking by Jim Watson'shouse, not that Jim Watson, different
Jim Watson with the two papers, like, yeah, still still hanging on

(35:55):
to it, Jim. Now there'sa lot of older people in our neighborhood,
so I think that's probably part ofit. But yeah, it's still
I was kind of the first shot. I feel up. It just is
funny because it's funny. You don'tsee him in restaurants anymore either. You
know, if you go to thebar and it's like there's a stack of
newspapers that there's it's what we usedto do. Yeah, they're not seeing
them. Booth, we have somebreakfast, read the page. How about

(36:17):
the USA today? At the HolidayInn or wherever you go, Remember that
used to get the USA today onyour doorstep, not in the holiday room,
not anymore. Yeah all right, sorry, kicked you off. So
he's received many honors, including theJames Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Chef in
nineteen ninety one and ninety eight. That's a big one, an award that
he is the only chef to havewon multiple times. His restaurant Spago,

(36:38):
earned the James Beard Award for Restaurantof the Year in nineteen ninety four.
It was later awarded to Michelin Stars. He's a member of the Culinary Hall
of Fame, has a star onthe Hollywood Walk of Fame. Currently has
over twenty restaurants open around the world. It's been married three times, has
four kids, and he's reportedly worthone hundred and twenty million. I would

(37:00):
have thought that number'd be higher forme too. Do you know this signature
dish for Wolfgang Puck? Like thedish that goes all the way back?
Let me get Let me guess it'sa pasta's nut and it's the sun dried
tomatoes, is it not? No? I think it's the taie one.
No, which one? Is it? Smoked salmon pizza? Is that right?
Like the og really. Yeah, well, I would have never guessed

(37:22):
that. I remember it was likethe It was like the Feticini with sun
dried tomatoes. That that was alwayslike the big one. But U and
I think he also did a maybeit was California Pizza Kitchen, but I
thought he also did a barbecue chickenpizza too. It was his. That's
I was singing that too. Verysimilar this year, by the way,
with the big move to the Bolt, the Chargers now will be catered by

(37:43):
Wolfgang Puck cater right, So talkabout a big jump on the charters on
the I don't know if they'll goon the plane. You'd like to think
so, but yeah, they're practicefacility and their training facility and all that.
That is all Wolfgang Puck catering. So a pretty big deal over there.
Coming up next David Essay, we'llhave off day Dodger talk before there
East swing to Philadelphia and Detroit.Big thanking it, Don McClain for coming
in tomorrow. Petros will be backbefore Bill Plaski joined us on Wednesday,

(38:07):
tim Thursday and peedback on Friday.Gonna be a wild week. The Petro's
