Thanks to Waco and Moses and socialmedia, Matt has gone very smoothly this
year, so we are very veryappreciative. And now it's time for the
final hour. Fun Facts. It'sfun effect it's the Yeah, we're three
fun facts. Fun facts. Well, take from this what you will.
But according to those that have crunchedthe numbers, looked at the angles and

(02:52):
projected the result, it is believedif you Sain Bolt, as we continue
our Olympic themed fun facts, ifyou Bolt competed in the long jump,
he would theoretically beat the world recordby over five feet. Well what are
we doing? That's what I said, If you're gonna beat the record by

(03:13):
five feet, I mean that's howhe beat the hundred record and the two
hundred record. I mean he smokedpeople's ass, shattered him. So you
Saint Bolt a hero to the people, no doubt about it. The greatest
Jamaican athlete of all time. Quickhits, everybody, come to the ms.
Quick, hitch, make it quick, y'all, y'allah. I told

(03:36):
you Browny was gonna show out.Now. You called it. You called
double digit points, You said ten, and he gave you twelve. I
mean, I am good. Nothought he call you a hater again?
No, you thought he'd score fourand they'd be like oh oh ah,
and they'd get him out so hecouldn't be embarrassed anymore. Ow what's the
matter you're next chat. I havegot a really bad cramp. I've been

(04:00):
having really bad pimps all week. It's probably Menstrul. Screw you Melon.
He's looking to build off that epictwelve point game yesterday. It is the
number one headline everywhere. Well,it's all Vick wants to talk about Hercules,
Hercules, Hercules. Good luck tohim. They're about to tip it

(04:21):
off. And I believe Dalton Connectis going to play tonight as well.
He got the night off last night. Maybe that's what it is. Maybe
he don't like looking over at Connectlike man watch it. Yeah, so
well man, he's making more uh, making all them shots, right,
making more waves than Bronni, andthat we can't have that. Bronni's gonna
be the rookie of the year. You know. I love the way.
I love the fire. I lovethe fire. You know. I don't

(04:43):
mind the tech. I don't mindthe tech he got, even though it's
obvious the baul Rick shiited off hisleg. I like the fire. It's
confidence out. He's got passion. The Clippers are three and oh in the
Vegas Summer League. They play theirfinal game in Vegas to night to night
as they take on the yaz AJazz record. The Clippers traded Russell Westbrook

(05:04):
after all that, Matt, youdon't get to make fun of surning Russell
Westbrook anymore. Locally, you gotto go. You've gotta go all around
the town like we Willie Winking toget stories on Westbrook. Now, they're
not just gonna show up on yourdoorstep anymore, Matt. He's not local.
No, he's out. See youlater, Russell. Nice knowing you.

(05:24):
Thanks for all of the engagement throughthe media. We really appreciated it.
They ship him out to Utah, who will then waive him and he
will sign with the Nuggets. Ishow this will work. That's Russell's future
for the Clippers. They get formerI think he was a top five pick.
Chris Dunn will come over just kindof trying to find his way.
According to Woj Westbrook again, we'llgo to the Jazz in the deal Utah

(05:49):
along with a second round pickswap andsome cash, and then they will buy
him out. He will join thechampion from two seasons ago, Denver Nuggets,
after clearing wave, and I'm surehe'll be welcomed with open arms.
By the trotter Nikola Jokic. Oh, come on, it's gonna be great.
Did I get that right? Adamwith your clippers hat on? Is

(06:12):
Chris Done a former top five pick? Yeah? I think you're right about
that. The offense has never reallyshowed up at the NBA level, but
he's still a very good defender.See there we go. That's the analysis
we were Yes, he was thefifth pick in the twenty sixteen Drove.
Oh you just got there, Matt, right there. The Dodgers are fifty
six and forty one. They resumetheir season tomorrow night versus the Red Sox

(06:33):
seven game lead in the NLS.Dodger Talk coming up next with David Vasse
at seven o'clock. Max Munsey wenton a podcast, The Foul Territory Podcast
today and said he's still not surewhen he's returning from his oblique injury.
If you are on ice for thislong because you swung too hard in batting

(06:55):
practice, don't go on a podcast, no strippling podcast, don't go anywhere.
Are you kidding me? He sayshe doesn't want to rush it and
have any set backs. The wholething is a setback. Rush it got
injured in May May fifteenth. You'vebeen out for over two months because you
swung too hard. It is asad state of affairs because he's fat.

(07:21):
Well, if your kids out playingand somebody calls him fat and he comes
home crying because he's not playing andsomebody on the playground called him fat,
well, what about this? MattInternational Dodgers brought to you by Googenheim Big
Business twenty twenty five MLB schedule cameout today and the Dodgers will open the

(07:42):

They opened the domestic part of theirseason, you know, just for the
rest of us losers Thursday, Maytwenty seventh, at home versus the Detroit
Tigers, who they just visited inDetroit. Right well, as we discussed

had the great Dave Dusick on theone hundred and fifty second Open Championship at
Royal Troon, Scotland. Shane LowryDaniel Brown lead the first round. Justin
Thomas and Xander shuffle Shuffleer are theretoo. Brooks Kupka and Scottie Scheffler are

(08:50):
all in the mix in. BrysonDecembo and Rory McElroy really struggled this morning.
Dusic alleged that perhaps some kind ofinstant kars gon get you for Rory
McElroy for the way he treated thevenerable golf media after he blew it a
couple of weeks back. You blewit, You really blew it, McElroy.

(09:11):
But now he's back with his ladyfriend. You know they split up.
Now they're back. Maybe he justneeds to split up with her,
stay away from me and my speciallady Friend's right. UCLA announced a two
game series versus the Zaga Zags.Matt then host the game that's December at
the Endtwit Dome that'll be the newhome of the Clippers in Inglewood. Then
next year Gonzaga will host the gamein Seattle. I don't think they'll have

(09:35):
a new expansion team or a relocatedteam there by then, but the Old
Key Arena maybe is where they willtip that one off. Ky, I'm
pretty sure to the Kingdome would beincredible. Matt into it Dome, Bougie
Bonton tickets two hundred and eighty onedollars sit on the floor. Damn is
that already secondary market? Did itsell out and you now have to go?
Or is it still available? Stillavailable? But you know who I'm

(09:58):
calling. Barry's got to have intoit though, I'd like to think so.
Right the Houston Texans are the firstteam to report for training camp.
What if Barry said, I gotyou covered, Pee, I'd like to
go to the show with you.I'm gonna get a suite. It holds
twenty people. I need five. You can have the rest. You and

(10:22):
I are going to see Boogeu together. My five are Rodney Pete. Yes,
he's if Barry said you play Helton, you can pack it with fifteen
of your friends and family for Billshaking. He's bringing five? Are you
taking him up on that offer?Yeah? I do it? Okay,
because he's you know I'm gonna beasking him for tickets right now. You

(10:46):
around for a couple decades, youget to see him finally. I think
I got the deal. If Igot upset with the company, I just
wander off and go somewhere else andwatch it. Okay, uh, Matt,
training camp's getting going. You knowabout that? And what about that?
Soccer? Let's talk about Angel CityCome on, you're kidding me.

the women. San Diego does nothave an MLS team. Get your tickets
today at angelcity dot com and hearall the games on the iHeartRadio app.

(11:30):
Keyword angel CITYFC. You mentioned theNFL before I interrupted you. Yes,
the Texans are the first team tohave the entire team in training camp.
The Chargers have their rookies, theRams and Chargers will have their vets in
camps starting next week. And Ido believe there are discussions about the Petros
and Money Show broadcasting from one ofthose practices because Jim Harbaugh is running a

(11:50):
ladder out there. He's got somethat start at nine am, some at
noon. He's got a practice thatstarts at five pm. So we will
find one that lies lines with ourschedule and get out to the Bolt for
one of those. All right,we'll be back with more great sports talk
coming up Man, great sports talkon this crunchy group Thursday. Welcome back

(12:18):
to the Petro Saying Money show youin five seven LA Sports Live everywhere on
the iHeartRadio a couple segments ago,and then we'll hand it over to the
David vas Say. He will haveoff night Dodger Talk tonight seven to eight
pm, and then tomorrow the Dodgersare back. Dodgers Red Sox first pitch
seven to ten pm for us,the third tour stop the Petros Money Summer

(12:39):
Tour at the Rock and Bruce andElsa Gunda. We'd love to see you
three to six pm. Coming out. Meet one of our many esteemed guests,
Eric Musselman, head coach at USCbasketball, Steve Sachs, Geene Simmons
on a telephone, and Brennan Rice, the rookie receiver drafted by the Chargers,
will all be out. All right, it's time for Don McLeay come

(13:05):
right into it. That's right, dude, it's on the table right.
A lot to talk about Summer Leaguegoing down. Russell Westbrook traded the BFF
of the Petrosen money Show. When'she going to Oregon? When's he leaving
town? He works so hard? The one and only Don McLain. In

(13:26):
a week, we talked to MickCronin and Eric Musselman, the leading scorer
in the history of the Pac twelve. And you see, la, the
next ass he kisses will be thefirst. The one and only Don McLain
on your Southern California Toyota Dealer CelebrityHotline. It's cracking, Don, How
are you harp? Trying to makemy way back from lax. I just

(13:48):
dropped Trent off and there's an eighteenwheeler sideways on the four oh five right
now? Oh for realbum where?Yeah, sideways four h five south right
after the one on one, likeright up in the inner chain like a
boulevard. That is a bad sceneover there, scoball. If you're headed
to the score ball for oh god, what a mess. Geez well,

(14:13):
we hope everybody he's our commander ChuckStreet. I mean that's half a karmageddon.
If you're laid out across one side. I mean, that's half a
Karmagetton all right, Don, Thebig news today is Russell Westbrook was a
Laker, a big, crazy tradethat kind of hurt the Lakers and didn't
work out, became a Clipper.I wouldn't say that it didn't work out,

(14:35):
but they're moving on from him.Your thoughts, Yeah, I thought
that was interesting because I thought Westbrook, you know, it was good for
the Clippers. Now maybe they viewit differently without PG and that, you
know, him taking on a biggerrole as in what they wanted from him.
I mean, only the front officeknows that. But I was a
little surprised. I thought they wouldkeep them. But obviously Denver wants them

(14:58):
and they're going to get them.Well, they get them. The Clippers
get Chris Dunn back, who's beentrying to make it for a little while
since being a high pick in thedraft. And then there's some speculation that
they may not be done. There'sa bunch of names floating around done.
I'm sure you've seen them. ZachLavine is one, but that the Clippers
are a team that would be veryinterested in still acquiring one of those big

(15:22):
name players. And this may notbe the squad that we think it's going
to be when the season tips off. Do you suspect there's still maybe big
game hunting out there for another startuck to anybody, but I knowing them
and what they've done the last fouror five years since Steve Balmer's been the
owner, They've proven that they're willingto spend. They've proven that they're willing

(15:43):
to be aggressive in trades and goingafter big name So yeah, I wouldn't
be surprised for one second if thisroster isn't done, and that it won't
be done until we get into trainingcamp. The one and only Don McClain
is our guest. Don is onthe four to oh, feeling the effects
of the Los Angeles summertime, hotand angry commute. Let's go now,

(16:07):
Don. Obviously, the summer leaguefor the Lakers is a huge story and
maybe overblown just a little bit.How much attention do you pay in general
with your job at CAAA and yourjob with the Clippers and all that to
the summer league and how it worksand how much attention are you paying this
year? I typically error towards theside of watching the players I just had

(16:33):
in the spring and seeing how they'redoing. That's kind of the first priority.
And then you know, because theClippers are such a veteran laden team
that none of their main guys playingSummer League, and it's a lot of
guys that probably aren't going to beon the roster. I watch it,
but I don't make sure I tunein, but I've watched a couple of
their games. But yeah, it'ssomething I pay attention to, but more

(16:55):
so kind of selfishly with the guysI have and how they're doing. What
is the level, you know, like, what is like for guys like
us that I mean, we understandthe levels of basketball only so well as
opposed to an expert. What isthe level of the Summer league as opposed
to what the real NBA is like, as opposed to NBA preseason or the
G League stuff like that. It'ssomewhere near the NBA regular season. I

(17:21):
think it's even probably a step belowthe G League. It depends on the
team. I mean, there areteams in the Summer League that have some
good young players on it. Justthey don't always play like Hockey has played
two games and I think he's donenow. So the good young players that
have established themselves as rookies will comeback and play. Jordan Hawkins, another
kid we had, play a coupleof games and then shut it down.

(17:44):
But the level is what's interesting aboutwatching it. If you're asking, I'm
not sure exactly what the level is. But when watching players in the Summer
League, you just see that there'snot a lot of understanding of how to
play the game. There's not alot understanding of changes speed and direction in
terms of how you play, andit's the speed that you play at.

(18:06):
Everybody's playing a million miles an hour. Everybody's not interested in spacing and running
offense and moving the ball. It'smore ISO, and so it's hard to
evaluate guys in that in that environmentbecause they're not playing with pro So if
I'm watching the guy playing in basicallya pickup game, how do I understand

(18:27):
how that translates to a real NBAgame where guys understand all those things I
just said. But it's a greatopportunity for some of these young guys,
and in the real opportunity for mein looking at teams, especially players that
are playing for established teams that arecontenders. Is the opportunity to play in

(18:49):
front of all the other people watching, not only other teams, but in
Europe, and there's a there's athere's a million scouts there from from teams
in Europe. And if you're afriend NBA guy, I've always said this,
and people have asked me players thataren't going to be drafted, that
are you know, have best twoway guys. Everyone's so reluctant to go

(19:10):
overseas. And I get it thatyour dream has always been in the NBA.
But if you're a two way guyto start, you know, or
a G League guy to start,it is a long road if you're going
to make it to the NBA.Yes, there are examples, but why
not the idea of going over toanother country for ten twelve years, making

(19:32):
enough money come back and then youcan decide what you want to do with
the rest of your life. Becauseyou bring all that money back, you
don't pay for anything. They payfor your car, your house, everything.
And so there's plenty of examples ofthat of guys that just say,
you know what, I think I'mgood enough to make the NBA, but
I'll probably not, So let mego make a career out of this somewhere
else and come back and have anice life when I get back. Yeah,

(19:55):
no doubt. Like you said, they're all auditioning for different levels of
play, and one of those guysvery well could have been Bronnie James,
but he was given you know, eight million bucks or seven point seven million
dollars and a guaranteed roster spot earned. Don do you I'm sure you've heard
some of it, at least doyou think it's fair Like we had Yovann

(20:15):
Buja yesterday. Right, he's aLaker beat rider, and he was trying
to spin it positive. But evenas he was trying to spend it as
positive as possible, and I'm surethis is him in Las Vegas, hearing
from scouts that he's interviewing before hewrites his articles, he said, look,
if you're based on if we're basedon what we see, not only
is he not a four year, guaranteed contract guy, he might not be

(20:40):
a two way player at this pointwith the way that he's played, and
might not be on a summer leagueroster for every game based on his play.
Do you think that's fair. Isit fair to judge Brownie on how
he's played in this setting? Well, now he's in the setting, and
look, we talked about this.If he wasn't Bronnie James, he wouldn't

(21:02):
have been the fifty fifth pick.I guaranteed that he would not have been
drafted. So then then it becomesif you're undrafted, do you get a
two way contract? Are you justa G league guy? That's a decision
for a team. But he gotthe opportunity by being drafted fifty fifth.
That's the gift he was given orearned, however you want to look at

(21:22):
it. But I think it's unfairif you get past that. I think
it's unfair to judge him just onthese three or four or five summer league
games, however man he's played, because he hasn't gotten better. He played
well yesterday, and I think he'sgoing to be given the opportunity to get
better. But I think we canall agree, the people that understand this
and know it and are part ofit, that he would not have gotten

(21:45):
drafted had he not been Brownnie James. But he did, and they gave
him that contract, not a twoway deal, a full roster, standard
contract, and so now it's upto him to get better and prove people
wrong. And I think I don'tthink that's such a crazy thing that he's
being given this opportunity to get better. Now. The discussion will be in

(22:07):
two years. If he hasn't gottenbetter, if he's still the same player,
if he's still not affecting the game, he's still not a great shooter,
then I think you can start topile on and say, you know
what, they should have never draftedhim, He never couldn't out, should
have been it. You can sayall those things, but I don't think
it's fair to say it right nowafter a teating John. Overall, when

(22:30):
it comes to the situation at SC, we talked about how it's a situation
where there's a little highlight and hegets the headline and it might have rubbed
some people the wrong way at thecollege level, and you talked about that
with us last season. How doesthat work in a pro environment. Obviously
Lebron James is the figurehead of theLakers or whatever you want to say.

(22:55):
I mean, it's got to createsome resentment, I think on a certain
level. But you know, Idon't know what it's like to be Lebron
James in how much he has earnedwhatever he gets because he has. And
so I think if everybody's looking atthis and they agree with what we've just

(23:17):
said in the last a couple ofminutes, I don't think there's gonna be
a resentment. I think there's gonnabe more like, you know what,
Lebron James is Lebron James, andit's his kid, and they're giving him
an opportunity. Let's see what hedoes with it. I think if you've
been around the NBA for as longas I have, this is a unique
situation. But I just feel likeit's it's unfair how much media attention this

(23:37):
gets for Bronnie. But it's alsounfair to jump to conclusions. And I
think whether again, whether you believethat he should have gotten this opportunity or
not. He got it. Now, let's see what he does with it.
And it's up to Bronni now toprove everybody wrong that's saying whatever they're
saying about him. After a fewsummer league games. Uh. Don The

(23:59):
one thing that other people are pointingout is just you know, these late
second round picks, they're almost alwaysflyers. They're international guys that you'll stash
for a year or two and theymay never come over. It's possible that
they never even or they're you know, they are picks. They're oh,
this is a friend of the coachand he's pretty good. Let's make them.
So I guess what I'm asking iswill it Do you think there's a

(24:23):
chance that it negatively affects the Lakers? Like, you know, yesterday they
brought up the point. Two daysago, we brought up the point that
Gary Trent is a guy they couldhave used, and he signed an NBA
minimum contract and the Lakers have noroster spots, so they weren't available to
sign them. Like how how bigof an impact if any? And shoot,
you work for the Clippers. Youknow what these guys are the coffees

(24:45):
of the world that end up workingtheir way from that fifteenth spot to be
a major contributor. Does it havethe potential to be a seriously negative move
or no, It's just that's whatthey chose to do with the fifty fifth
pick. Get over it. That'sa great Matt because I just said,
you know, that's what they chooseto do. They rewarded lebron and gave
him an opportunity Bronni. But you'reright. I mean, hey, if

(25:08):
you could have had Gary Trent forthe myth, Let's say you knew that
you could have had Gary Trent Juniorfor the minimum before the draft, would
you still have drafted Bronni? Becauseit's clear Gary Trent Junior is an NBA
player, a solid NBA player, and like you said, a guy that
they could use, but they couldn'tget him because Ronnie took up that roster

(25:29):
spot. And that's I think thehard part is that the fifty fifth pick
is usually a two way guy, usually, like I don't know what percentage,
but usually, and so he's nottaking up a roster spot and you
could have used it for Gary TrentJunior. So that is a valid argument.
Pretty sweet. If you go overseasand make money, you might come
back with a wacky foreign wife too. Don Does that ever happened? Oh?

(25:52):
Yeah, for sure. Yeah,I'd have to go over there forget
the money. Yeah, John,I'd like you to meet all. Oh
g we're opening a Perogi restaurant.It's gonna be great, it's gonna be
aw I wish my knee wasn't allscrewed up. I would have done that.
I would have married some six orfour German chick. Yeah, we
have a bunch of porzingiss in ourfamily. Sorry, Brook, my eyes

(26:19):
have been open. Brook. I'mout here in Duzledorf. Everything's changed.
I'm married an East German swimmer.I'm always on time and my wife's back
looks like a gigantic kite. Uh. Don do you get to take some
time off or you're relaxing? Now? What's going on the traffic? I'm

(26:42):
actually going to Indianapolis tomorrow. Ohyeah, tread and then we're back and
then we are actually going on vacationnext Saturday, the twenty seventh for a
week. So finally get to chillout. Oh you got name checked by
the way, as you would expectby Mick. And he came in studio
for like an hour on Monday,Yes, and just brought up the connections

(27:06):
that he's been making with the UCLAlegends. As this thing has shifted.
They got some money now, theysigned a bunch of guys through the portal.
Felt really good about the dudes theywere bringing in, and seemed like
he was in a pretty damn goodplace. Even though it didn't seem like
he's that crazy about the current stateof college basketball. Seemed like he made
peace with it and had a prettygood offseason. Yeah. You know what's

(27:26):
interesting is he was at because he'srecruiting a player on Trent's team. He's
not recruiting Trent, but so Isaw him from across the way. They're
not allowed to talk with parents. It's like an NCAA role, which is
ridiculous. But anyways, so heand I were text and they're basically the
whole game. Because watching AU basketball, I'd rather like stick porks in my
eyes. But yeah, he is. I feel like it took a lot

(27:52):
of hard work from him to getpeople on board with this whole nil thing,
because that's how you have to playthe game now, every buddy,
not just UCLA, everyone, Andhe worked really hard. I know he
did, because we talked about itand he got it done. But that
doesn't mean that he agrees with it. And I'm not speaking for him,
but I don't agree with it either, and I think a lot of people
don't that this is how it's beingplayed now. But you got to give

(28:17):
him a lot of credit. Isthat he got it done. He got
really good players in the offseason inthe portal, like everybody has to do
now, and they're gonna be prettygood next year. The great Don McClain,
he's always really good. Uh,don have a great time on the
four oh five there. If yougotta pull off, see what's going on
at the Scuball Museum. You know, go ahead. We appreciate you and

(28:38):
have a great night. All right, guys, have good weekend, all
right, den a live guy birthdaycoming up next and then David Vasse will
take over first time this week.He has taken calls on off day All
Star Break Dodger Talk. So lineit up now eight six six ninety seven
two five seventy and he will beready for you straight out the gate.

(29:00):
It's seven. Well, thank youeverybody for listening to this Crunchy Groove Thursday,

(30:10):
people are clamoring. It was obviousthere's many dips out there at them that
may be where you make your bones, not with the basketball analysis, but
with the variety of dips. Peopleseem to enjoy it. But I would
imagine so a hell of a lotmore than Jordan Miller Summer League stats score
through three games. How dare you? I mean, I'm on it.

(30:30):
I know I'm on a comrades today, you know, but I am the
dip king. So I don't knowhow you guys sit here talk about dips
and not bringing me he into it. Well, I think I don't know
not topper dips. They're not talkingclips and doing dips, well, clearly

(30:52):
not. They're always injured Matt chipsand dip. They should be doing dips
and maybe they instead of eating thosenatty dips, and maybe the clippers would
get you know, past the firstor second round of the playoffs next time.

So that's a lot of giveaways outside, come on out CS even fully functional

(32:52):
ploy out of my mega so hecan take you through all the appetizers on
his podcast. All right, it'stime for some guy action. Man.
We have British News, very highnosed, high born, aristocratic dead guy.
Birthday of the Day. It's timefor PMS British News, United Kingdom,

(33:16):
English News. It's time for BritishNews News. Cheerio straight out.
William make Peace Fackery two hundred andtwelve years old today, technically an Indian
man from India. Well, hewas born in India. Okay, his

(33:37):
father worked for the East India Company. That'll do it. His mother was
the daughter of a guy that workedfor the East India Company. When he
was four years old, his fatherdied and his mother sent him back to
England and married a different guy inIndia who worked for the East Indian Company.
Kind of felt like, if youworked for the East Indian Company and

(33:58):
you died of some strange disease inIndia, he just hopped to the next
person. Hence the drinking of theIPA. I suppose high education Trinity College
in Cambridge. In the world ofVictorian literature, Matt Bill make Peace.
Thackeray holds only a second candle toone man, and that man is the

(34:23):
biggest puzza in all of England. In Victorian times, Chuck Dickens, Who's
got the biggest Dickens? Chuck whowas the best of times and was also
that that is, he traveled around. He had three daughters. He wrote

(34:50):
real sad part of Thackeray's life, and he seemed to be a really nice
guy. After the third daughter wasborn, the wife went nuts postpartum and
went crazy, very sad for him, and he tried to take her to
Ireland to fix her, and onthe way she threw herself into the seat,
Oh God, and had to bepulled out. And she still lived.
She actually outlived him by thirty years, but most of her life was

(35:14):
spent in an institution. She wentabsolutely bonkers. But as far as which
is longevity, is what that promotionsit must have been, I don't know.
But Factory himself. As far ashis writing career, he did some
travel books that had some success forhim and made him able to write for
a living. What really made himfamous was Vanity Fair, his novel which

(35:37):
the magazine takes its name. It'sabout British society. Vanity Fair a panoramic
view of British society. Vanity Fairitself is a term reflecting on man's sinful
attachment to worldly things, an endlessfair of vanity. So this made him

(35:59):
very fair for the remainder of hislife. Vanity Fair was like the Godfather
of the nineteenth century. Everybody haddifferent characters that really related to and so
on and so forth. He wrotea lot of books. Vanas the Fair
was eighteen forty seven, a greatwork which became a Cubrick film The Luck

(36:22):
of Barry Lindon. Never saw it. You never saw Barry Linden, Never
saw Barry Lyndon. Oh man,I'm preoccupied with Doctor Thackeray, Clive Owen's
character from The Nick. That's allI can think about. And what a
travesty it was that that show wascanceled after Chile. For everybody, you
should see Barry Linden and Ryan O'Neiljust passed. So Barry Lindon is a

(36:45):
great underrated Cubrick film. Okay,Factory saw himself as more of a realistic
and less sentimental or exaggeration prone writerthan Charles Dickens. Mary James has seemed
to have taken his style a stepfurther. But make no mistake, Bill

(37:07):
Make Piece Thackeray was a huge deal. Sadly he had a stroke at fifty
two, just kind of suddenly afterdinner one night, seven thousand people at
the funeral for Bill make Piece Thack. Oh boy, God, the Thack
attack. You're a live guy decidedto go local today. And I also

(37:30):
get to tell another story of completeand total failure. And why it's good
I'm no longer in the music business. Remember I was not in a position
to sign cool bands or the onesthat the ahol music snobs were into.
I was asked to find bands thatwould write number one songs and sell millions
of records. So when I wasrequested by my bosses to be president at
the Viper Room for a showcase froma local band making waves on the local

(37:51):
scene in nineteen ninety seven for DreamWorkswith Damn near every major label in attendance,
figured I was in for a realspectacle. When I last remembered being
hyped up for with Sparrow, theband we would ultimately sign and became Buck
Cherry, and that was something formerPMS guests, Oh what a reunion that
was. They were not happy tosee me again. It was a chili

(38:14):
reception system of a down plays.I report and say it's probably the worst
showcase I've ever seen, and Ileft early hard pass. Rick Rubin felt
differently. He loved them, hesigned them, and of course they became
a massive rock band internationally. Ilove Armenian rock, right. Maybe it

(38:39):
was my racism against the Armenians thatclouded my judgment that day, no doubt
about that. Toxicity was probably thealbum of the year in two thousand and
one, Happy forty ninth to DarrenMalacca Malacchian boor in Hollywood one hundred percent

(39:02):
Malakia. Father Bartan is a painter, dancer, choreographer, mom Zeppor a
sculptor. Darren got into the Rockthanks to Kiss We will be at Rock
and Bruce Tomorrow, owned by PaulStanley and Jean Simmons. Of Kiss.
Kiss led to Black Sabbath and IronMaiden and Judas Priest and Motorhead. Got

(39:24):
a guitar when he was eleven, played it endlessly. He went to Rose
and Alex Piribos Armenian School in LosFelis. That is where he met Shabo
and Otto Rich and later Serged Tankian, who had attended the school years earlier

(39:45):
than Malachian. In ninety three,That's when they met. They shared the
same rehearsal studio while playing for differentbands, they hit it off. They
formed a jam band called Soil withDave Hakafian and drummer Domingo Larryano. He
felt a little bit on the outsideof it, felt a little bit on

(40:07):
the outside. Shavo became their managerand then their rhythm guitars. Soil broke
up Malachean, Tankian, and Oldaginianformed a new band using the name Victims
of a Down, based on apoem that Serge had written, I actually
know that Darren had written. Victimswas changed to System because they believed it

(40:29):
would appeal much more widely, andthey also wanted their records to be right
next to Slayer, their musical heroes, so System of a Down instead of
Victims of It Down. Malachian notonly played guitar, but he also co
produced all of their records with RickRubin. System was not long. They
broke up around six oh five osix. He and everyone saved Serge Tanky

(40:52):
and really was just the two ofthem that broke up. Ye. Yeah,
sadly because everybody else started Scars onBroadway except Tankian. Uh. And
that band has been on and offfor the last fifteen years. They have
been off for like the last fiveor six. He's a big hockey guy,
of course he is, Yeah, bro. You used to see him
at King's Games a lot. Healso loves the Dodgers. Never married,

(41:15):
no kids, but he does havea gal and they have been together for
quite some time. He and Gayanchet Jubian Happy forty nine Darren Malachean of
per Monachia. You know, it'sa shame that him and Search couldn't work

(41:35):
out their differences right, because thatdoesn't seem to be much of a call
for anything else from these guys.It was a shack and there here in
La you know, those two powerhouses. Grab your stuff and straighten up your
makeup or whatever you wanted to youwanted to. Okay, everybody will see
you tomorrow. Have a great night, and we look forward to the wonderful

(41:57):
show at the Rock and Bruce inEl Segundo at three o'clock. Eric Musselman,
Renning, Rice, Steve Sachs andGene Simmons on the phone on the
telephone, prizes and you the listener, come on out. We'll see you
three o'clock tomorrow. Dodger Talk withDavid Vasse is coming up next
