Toyota Dealer's celebrity headset one of theall time great Dodgers ever, Second Base

didn't want to be Darby with hisweird forearms looking off disproportionate. They didn't
want to be Ron Say all angry. They didn't want to be Pedro Guerrero,
(03:30):
a mysterious man out at night Pedro. They didn't want to be Socia
to business like straight so fun.We all wanted to be Steve Sack.
That's the truth. Saxy Dancer.He's a great man, he's a great
American. He's a great person anda great Dodger and he's joining us on
the Petro somebody shows got an eventtomorrow, second half starting up. It's
(03:53):
great to have Steve Sax and greatsports talk show him love. He took
a picture with all you weirdos. And when we had Chris Taylor, we
just ran out the back, inthe back, out the back, in
the back, air sacks in thefront, pictures crying grip. They ran
down Chris Taylor in the parking lotlike the hard day's night. Really,
so am I am I the endtoday? Petros and money? Yeah,
(04:15):
oh, you know we love scamthat we do the sacks and Kate's in
the am. That's right, andit reminds us of playoff time and when
a big series is coming up withScam's coming. Scam is coming, Scam's
on the way. We just wantedto be in for a while. Its
coming. You know, when youwatch a baseball team and the ins and
outs of it, I know arevery familiar to you because you've lived this
(04:38):
for for many years. But whatis it like at this time of the
year when you're a baseball team likethe Dodgers, you beat up, things
have been just okay? How doyou get those juices? Going again to
come out at halftime, you knowwhat I mean, and run out the
tonnal Well, the good thing aboutit is the Dodgers have been beating up
a bit as far as the healthgoes. But but nonetheless, you look
(05:00):
up, there's still six and ahalf games up. That's a great place
to be and it's a testament toyou know, how they started and the
great athletes that they have. They'vegot a ton of guys obviously coming back,
and when that happens, uh,you know, it's gonna be something
else. But the second half isgreat because it just gives you a sense
of renewment. And now you cansee the finish line and that's what they're
(05:20):
looking at right now, So they'rethey're gonna be jacked up. You don't
have to you don't have to tryto get any enthusiasm in anybody's veins there,
it's already there. How do youkeep yourself from feeling like you're being
just overwhelmed with how long the seasonis? You know what I mean?
Like, yeah, you know, like I remember thinking that at the beginning
of football training camp, like,my god, I got to be here
(05:41):
three weeks, Like, how doyou how do you do that? Here's
here's the crazy thing about that strugglingbecause I get asked that question with guys
that play other sports, you know, guys that are in football, You
talk about the collision aspect of theirsport and how do they go through that.
Baseball players wonder that, you know, you wonder where basketball players up
and down the court for just pacethat they put up. They wonder how
baseball players can do one sixty twoclose to two hundred games a year if
(06:05):
you count spring training in postseason? How do they do that? And and
for me, it was just itwas just part of the deal. I
mean, now if I travel somewhereand I'm there for a while, you
know, I get a little jetlike I would play the whole season and
all the you know flights that wehad taken, and I would never get
tired. I mean, all Idid was play baseball and sleep. And
(06:26):
that's your life as a baseball player, you know, you just try to
keep yourself fresh. But I nevergot tired. And nowadays, like I
said, I take a trip andi'm you know, I'm in bed for
three days. It feels like everybody'slike that now because I, like you
we don't want to be solved. How about this? How about this?
People think about the way that loadmanagement is working in basketball? How we
(06:48):
platoon players in baseball? Our manSteve Sacks eight of eleven seasons, played
over one hundred and fifty games, and eight of eleven seasons and the other
three they're like one hundred and fortyfive games. My good guy was a
freaking animal, is what we're talkingabout. So we like looking back,
Steve, We like talking about you, and and I would love to know
(07:13):
you come in and you replace Lopes. Garvey's still at first, Russell's still
at short, Says still at thirdbase, and now, oh yeah,
Lopes is gone. We're dropping thisrookie in ye, you win Rookie of
the Year. You have a higherbatting average than any of them, to
have more hits than any of thosedudes, how the heck did you just
step right in and be like whatever, let's go. You know, I
(07:35):
was fortunate to be on a reallygood team. Those guys really helped me
a lot to kind of, youknow, share that path with me.
And I got a lot of alot of encouragement from from those guys.
And they were they were great tome, and I'm grateful for them to
this day. Steven Garvey and Iare very good friends still. The other
(07:55):
guys, I see it. Ilove seeing them all washing you're gonna be
that vice. I No, Idon't want to do that. I don't
want to do that. So Iactually right, by the way, you
don't want to do that. Iwas fortunate to be on a really good
team, and uh, and thatwas it. And I really I loved
playing baseball. You know. Thefunny thing about it is, and I
don't think a lot of people knowthis, but I grew up in Northern
(08:16):
California, and I grew up abig Giants fancy. I grew up hating
the Dodgers. Yeah right, Well, no, when they hear the rest,
they will boom. They're gonna comearound. They're gonna come around.
They're gonna come around. So Iremember watching the Game of the Week with
my dad my brother, Giants andDodgers playing, and I told my dad,
I said, you know what,Dad, if the Dodge, if
(08:37):
the La Dodgers ever drafted me,I wouldn't play for the Dodgers for a
million dollars. And that was mein nineteen sixty eight at the age of
eight years old. Ten years later, when those Dodgers drafted me out of
high school, it took nine hundredand eighty five thousand dollars less for me
to sign with I'm taking really greatSteve And ever since then, you know,
(09:01):
I love the Dodgers, and it'sso great because I only live an
hour away. I can fly hereand enjoy the games and whatnot. I
got a lot of friends here thatstill work at the stadium. You know.
It's amazing. Yeah, the familyand the type of an atmosphere the
Dodgers create it, it's a realthing. Well, a lot of people
don't know when the Saxy Dancer cameto the Dodgers. He lived deep deep
(09:22):
in the valley and then he gothis s together and moved to Manhattan Beach.
One of the early athletes Yes tomove to Manhattan Kate Rambus lived in
the same neighborhood. He lived aroundthe block Sacks. Yeah, but that
his wife is from here or somethinglike sax. You were like a real
og, Yes to come out toManhattan Beach. And now Kendrick Lamar,
all these famous people, Chip,Kelly, Vince Vaughn, every King,
(09:46):
every coach. You are the pioneerManhat Beach. Now I all live the
beach. Wow, what was itlike when you were here in the eighties.
It was all strawberry fields and localweirdos. It was awesome. I
would leave to go to the theballpark at the off time, so it
wasn't that much of a trek toget down to Dodger Stadium, and that
was a good thing. But yeah, I was in a neighborhood. I
(10:07):
was right behind the Manhattan Beach Mallthere in Marine and Sepula, the old
mall. Yes, and and KurtRambus was the other guy that lived in
the neighborhood. We were the onlytwo guys. And I mean there were
a lot of vacant lots there still, but now it's all built up.
So yeah, get yourself coffee whereyour teammates like, what the hell are
you doing? Yeah, we livein Pasadena. You're actually gonna live in
(10:30):
were? They like asking what youwere thinking? And the thing is,
I grew up on a farm andI liked the quiet. I like some
space, and and Manhattan Beach waskind of like that then, and that's
a that's the way I liked it. I liked a lot of a lot
of privacy, and so that's whatit was. Would you ever find yourself
with the chips down at El Segundoon the other side of the refinery,
Hey, I try to stay outof it. You try to stay out
of Algondo. I was coming throughhere that way, and I thought,
(10:52):
this is a beautiful, little, quaint neighborhood. I thought, you never
never been this way up, butI thought this is a great, quaint
little neighborhood. I really like thisexactly Mayberry. That's what I heard people
do. And I watched Mayberry almostevery night on me TV watch that.
We are all we are on TVtv R gun Smoke and I'm not a
(11:16):
shame, we know. I watchedit every night. I want to watch
Matt Dyllan blow people. He's onthe Conners. He's on there and he
flips that rifle like that, exactlyright. I love watching them. You
and get it on me TV,Man wear Jaws, Unite the Train,
the Virginia. Let's go on SATon Saturdays. You got the you know,
(11:37):
you got Beverly Hill Billies, screenAcres, screen acres. Yeah,
you get to zeroes Er. Yeah. My favorite Hylius. Do you ever
you ever get out of the countryand the little Peter gunn No, no,
no, stay in the country city. That's a place for me.
Yeah, the we know why peopleare getting hurt. We feel like we
(11:58):
keep asking older players, Hey,why are these UDEs getting hurd Wow?
They travel ball and they coach andthey're throwing and it's NonStop. It's year
round. So instead of asking youhow you stayed healthy for all those games
every year, tell us what didyou like growing up? Did you play
everything at you were a seasonal athlete? Okay, so I did play everything,
but in high school when it gota little more even the coach wouldn't
(12:20):
let me play My parents wouldn't letme play other sports because they felt had
a future in baseball. So thehigh school coach wouldn't let me play football.
He wouln't let me play basketball. Were you pissed? Yes, Yeah,
I wanted to play. And mybrother was a great quarterback that never
got to play much. When hehit high school. They shut him down
too, so he wasn't able todo that. But yeah, I wanted
to play other sports. And Ithink that's good. That's important to play
(12:43):
other sports because it makes you abetter athlete all the way around. But
I don't know what it is today. There's two trains of thought. Now
when you think about, you know, these guys that get shut down because
of travel ball they played too much. There's also a train of thought that
says, maybe they didn't pitch enough, because I mean, why did uh
Don Sutton, Nolan Ryan, theseguys would violent arm action, go out
(13:03):
there and they pitch two hundred andseventy eight innings a year every year today
they get close to one hundred andtwenty and they want to shut her down.
You know, I don't get it. Play. I'm with you.
It makes that that Nolan Ryan numbersare Yes, what was he he was?
He was another what was your whatwas your career like against Nolan Ryan?
I had good, good success offof Nolan take that fortunately, uh
but that was a guy that's inyou know, there's some guys that need
(13:26):
to go in another league. Yeah, he needed to go in the other
league. He was totally different theleague up here. That was not even
human. Yeah, that's how goodhe was in that league. Absolutely.
I mean, I'm not it's notstam season, So we don't want to
ask you about the trade. Don'ttoo much away, but what is it?
What is it? I mean wethe weird thing is is o Taani
(13:46):
Bobblehead night is like a riot andthe guy has been there's like eight bobbleheads
in Anaheim. You know he's beenin the same area, the same spring
training. Yep, but in theDodger uniform. It was a whole different
deal. And it is a wholedifferent deal. What do you feel when
you watch him play? And howmuch fun is it to watch? Because
the one thing I noticed is manhe plays hard. Does you know I'd
(14:07):
like to see that. People don'ttalk about the all around. We all
know how a great baseball player is, but did you know what a phenomenal
athlete all the way around? Youknow how fast he runs? This guy
is really fast and you know he'sgot all the attributes. He's big,
he's strong, Uh, he runslike a deer, and he's his arms
phenomenal, He's got plus plus powerand uh, he's the real deal.
(14:30):
There's no question about it. Andpeople were skeptical about and he's going to
be able to do both. Isay, when his arms get healthy,
you ride that pony as far asyou can, and you let him pitch
and let him hit, let himdo both of it. The people,
the commenters are all excited about howfreaking swoll you are, Like Sax is
freaking jacked Karate mash exactly. Yeah, you Sax can levitate, and I
(14:54):
wish so all these I know you'vebeen asked a million times, but we're
we're in a live setting. Allthese people are here. You will command
their attention. For those that maynot remember or may not know. Nineteen
eighty eight, two outs, bottomof the nine. You're on deck.
You're in the on deck circle. There's a moment when Vin Scully says,
(15:18):
Sax waiting on deck, but thegame right now is waiting at the plate,
and they pan to you and thenthey go back and the very next
pitch. So what's happening is you'restanding in the on deck circle watching this
the most incredible drama in the historyof the World Series unfold before Kirk Gibson's
home run. I'll answer that question, but I wanted to let everybody know
(15:39):
that there's another There used to bea Vin Scully in Mexico. Did you
ever hear about this guy? Hewas phenomenal I'm waiting for my plane.
One day, I'm in Mexico Cityand the Dodgers are playing, and they're
broadcasting the Dodger game in Mexico Cityas I wait for my plane, and
they have a they have a VinceScully in Mexico that does the Dodger games.
(16:00):
It was amazing. Yes, hewas like Lance Joe hail Tony,
he s a owl so good, unbelievable. What was that bubb with Like,
Yeah, it was. It wasvery spicy. I should say,
(16:22):
publish the moment, like in theon deck circle eight. So I mean
there's two outs, two outs, there's two outs, and Mike Davis eventually
still second, right, So Isaid, the base is open, bases
open. There's a chance he willnot give anything, gives anything to hit.
So I didn't know. I wasjust thinking about how I'm gonna win
the game. I knew. IKnewcersley was going to be aggressive on me,
and so I was going to beaggressive on him. I was going
(16:44):
to look for something fast and justtry to drive it. And then as
I was thinking that, Gibson takesthe swing and I think I don't have
to worry about that anymore. Thatball is way out. Immediately as soon
as he hit it, did youdrop everything and sprint out and said thank
you Lord? And you know,he hit that ball right at the end
of a swing. He was alittle in front of it, but he
got it right on the meat ofthe bat and bow he he he just
hit it right on the perfect part. And three four foul balls. There
(17:07):
was that dribbler down the first baseline that just barely ticked out. The
funny thing that I that I likedabout it is when I saw it on
replay and they show the ball goingout of the ballpark and then in back
of the parking lot you see allof the tail lights for the people that
left early, and they slammed downtheir break. They said, ship yeah,
(17:30):
yeah, live radio. It's prettyfunny. You're pretty funny, Sacks.
He love you. It looks theneverything you know. Now, what's
that's not true? Sacks? Now, what do we have going on tomorrow?
There's a big event. Oh yeah, you and I are going to
be out of galloping and Steve Garvey'sgoing to be a galloping and Steve ya,
it's the Steve. It's a staalpingfor it's a Steve show. He's
going to be out there tomorrow,Mischion Hills right off the four or five
and Rosco. What are we doing. I'm not going to need security.
(17:51):
Yeah yeah, actually, yes, yeah, I'm gonna be there from twelve
to one and We're just gonna beyou know, looking, saying hi and
seeing everybody and hanging out. Sogallping number one four dealer in the world
twenty nine years in a row.We think about the American Classic, the
Mustang, the first s u V, the Explore, when you were at
the top of your game rookie,or maybe maybe it's when you're a Yankee
(18:14):
and you're out hitting maddingly and everyone'stalking about what a great hitter Mattingly is
and all this guy's when it's bangingmore hits than freaking Mattingly. When you
go to New York whatever with NewYork media, this guy shows up and
starts freaking crushing balls all over theplace each in Manhattan Island exactly right.
What what were you driving when youwere out here? Was I driving?
Yeah? The media? You droppedTom in a CONTI had a sweet Camaro,
(18:36):
had top I love I love musclecars. I want to buy a
muscle car. I'm looking for oneright now. I love those, you
know, like like a sixty eightNova there we go time with, you
know, with a hearst linkage andoh yeah, a little three on the
floor shifter. I loved it.I love that. But what was I
driving here? I don't know whatI was driving. I Oh, I
had a I had a an AMCGremlin. No, I had a uh
(18:57):
A four at a four pacer,A nice pacer. You are count Sacramento.
You know you're The Golden Bridge isin your hearts. You know you're
sacrament Seeing that golden bridge, goldenbeautiful drawbridge. Yes, the and speaking
of that area, the A's aregoing to play right there is that exciting?
(19:18):
Like that's gonna be kind of coolfor the area, right, It's
amazing. And uh, from whatI'm hearing, Uh, there's no shovels
on the ground in Vegas and Iwas just there. There's nothing. Yeah.
So the the the owner of theSacramento Kings also owns the river Cats,
and I do the river Cats gameson Saturday. Matter of fact,
tomorrow, I'm doing another game forthem tomorrow and let's river Cats. Yeah,
(19:41):
And so he wants to buy theA's. So if he buys the
A's, he's going to put itright where the river Cats are playing down
do Another stadium. Yeah, rightby the Golden Bridge. Yeah, it's
beautiful view. That guy, Vivic, he's got a lot of money.
Vivic's got a lot of a lotof donuts. That guy, he sure
doesn't have a lot of money.I think he does have a lot.
He just don't spend it. Isthat what it is. Won't spend it
right, but it's inherited. Vividearned it. Yeah, Vivid, Vivid
(20:03):
has got the got the donuts. He could definitely do it, no doubt.
All right, So anyway, we'llsee Steve Sacks. Everybody the Dodger
great person. Hold on, where'sthe uh? Where's the bucket? Sacks
is going to give away the oTani jersey. Where is it? We've
got a show hal Tani all starjersey to give away and seventeen cases of
(20:25):
Ito and oi osha and figure we'lldo it right now at Dodger Stadium,
a show hal Tony jersey. Allright, here we go seven fifty dollars

So here we go. Hey,how do you guys do radio? And

(20:48):
I thought, there we go thewinner? Okay. Do you want
me to read the number? Yeah? Okay, I can do it.
Not only have glasses three four eight, yeah, eight nine nine. Yeah.

(21:30):
but yours some money. AM fiveseventy l A Sports Live everywhere on
the iHeartRadio. All the PBJA triogot faded out. Why did they do?
They got faded out so hard sowe could hear the Steppenwolf. That's
why. Big thank you to SteveSacks, a man of the people,
taking a ton of photos, signinga bunch of autographs. The little kids
that have shown up with their chainsout are beating their heroes or their father's
(21:53):
heroes. It's been a great dayso far live at the Rock and Bruise
and Elsagun. Though we cannot reckonme Rock and Bruis enough. There's a
reason why we keep coming back hereyear after year after year. A huge
thank you to Adam and Jenna andKatie and all the people in Rock and
Bruise that always make this place specialfor us, for the guests, and
for all of our listeners. Wehave got but twenty five minutes left pe
(22:18):
in the show starting to stop onthe on the summer tour. Yeah,
but a bit now. You do, first of all, to the listeners,
like we do this job. It'sit's a job that Matt and I
most of the time doing a studioor even in our own homes. So
to go somewhere and to have everybodyshow up like they've done for many years.
This is our eleventh year doing thisis really gratifying and it's wonderful to
(22:41):
see all the people. So thankyou very much for all coming. And
we have another announcement for our nextsummer tour stop. Are we gonna do
that in the next segment? Nextsegment, Okay, next segment. The
announcement next stop. I don't wantto stop the show, but that guy's
wearing a bomb equipment jean Jacket's amazing. It's our man from Dewey Pest Control.
(23:03):
Dewey Pest Control guy has the bestjean jacket I've ever seen in my
leave jacket. Oh my god, that jean jacket, Sir, you are
a fashion icon. A bomb equipmentjean jacket. Amazing. What's next?
Jimmy Z shorts with the big vulkolstrap and Cavarichi's with no socks. All
(23:27):
right, Uh, so here's thedeal. Matt's daughter, Preston Smith,
was born the very year Matt andI started doing this radio show, maybe
maybe about three months into the show. We started in January. She was
born in June, right, andit was around the same time I turned
thirty years old, and I amnow forty seven years old. So do
(23:51):
the math. And Preston is afabulous musician and has a great band,
one of a few great bands, and they've been entertaining us all afternoon.
But I do not really know howthis happened. Pressure, So you sent
me a text. You sent mea text on Sunday, all right,
Sunday, and you asked, Iwas a little down in the mouth.
(24:11):
I'd had a couple drinks alone andI was listening to music Get You Alone.
It wasn't like I wasn't listening toheart, but I was listening to
music and I don't know. Iwas in my cups and I sent Mat
a text to ask if the bandcould play a request. The request well,
(24:37):
first, I asked for something veryobscure that swears in it, yes,
and we can't have it has atrumpet, and I broke out my
core net to see if I couldplay the trumpet part, and I damn
near had a heart attack. Thenotes were very high, so I really
had to tighten the lips and Iwas working on it. Do you know
how many cigarettes Lewis Armstrong smoked? And he could play up? He could,
(24:59):
but I'm not trump train now thatthing's been collecting dust for the last
thirty years. The first song Iasked for for those of you that want
to look things up is called DressUp in You by Bell and Sebastian.
Very depressing, very snarky song. But that one didn't work out, so
instead I asked for a song bythe Field Mice called Emma's House. Now,
(25:21):
these are very depressing songs, becauseI am not really that happy of
a person most of the time. That's what Preston said to me. She
said, these songs, these, these are the ones that I'm supposed to.
Yes, now that we're here andeverybody's drinking, it seems like such
a terrible idea. But nonetheless, but it's a peak behind the curtain of
(25:41):
the engagement that we have when weare not on the air, and how
these things come to me. Well, I should not have asked in such
a cavalier way. She loves requests. They love when they get requests.
When they're playing live, they tryto make it work. They can pull
up the nowadays on their phone, they can pull up the tabs don't really
music, and they can try tobang it out. So they're gonna do
(26:04):
Emma's House by Preston. Is thatwhat we're doing. We're doing by the
field Mice. Yeah, Now,did you, Preston, did you like
the song when you heard it?No? All right, Well, that
that's great. You know, that'slike a play by play guy when you're
about to start the season. Hesays, Look, guys, I'm only
doing this for the money. It'sokay, Preston, It's okay. No,
(26:29):
No, it's a great song. No, we appreciate your honesty for
me. It's a great song thatit's out. I hope I do it
justice for you, petros Well,I mean, uh, if not,
it's my fault, right, Yeah, it's the effort. It's the effort
that matters. Put in the time. The whole band I've done there.
They've never quested a song before, they've never played it together. So they
have learned their parts individually. Andnow much like the Portal House from Eric
